The Co e e Sain Rose is roud ou. As you leave our hallowed halls and continue your journey in life, you will face new challenges, obstacles and perhaps disappointments. Be fearless, trust your instincts, learn to laugh, and savor each moment along the way. Remember, your hallmark experiences at Saint Rose have instilled you with the passion,

c

knowledge, and purpose, not only to do great things — but extraordinary things.

Go for it!

Histor of the Co ege The College of Saint Rose was founded in 1920 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet as a Roman Catholic college for women. Its founders selected the name of Saint Rose to honor the first canonized saint in the Americas. The primary academic purpose of the College was the full development of the person through a strong liberal arts curriculum. Initially, emphasis was placed on the professional training of teachers, and this emphasis was expanded in the early years to preparation for business and other professions. As needs in the Albany area increased, the College expanded and revised its programs to meet those needs. An evening division was developed in 1946 to meet the needs of World War II veterans and was reinstituted in 1974 to respond to continuing education needs. In 1949, a graduate school was added to provide master's degree programs. Men were admitted to both the original evening and the graduate division and, in 1969, the College became fully coeducational. In 1970, the Board of Trustees was expanded to include laypersons in addition to the Sisters of St. Joseph. With the formal transfer of control to this Board, The College of Saint Rose became an independent college sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, Albany Province.

Our engagement with the urban environment expands the setting for educational opportunities and encourages the Saint Rose community's energetic involvement and effective leadership in society.

e Nationa An em O say can you see by the dawn’s early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. O, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave? — Francis Scott Key

HG SAINT ROSE MOTTO

In tuo umine vide imus umen x In ight we sha see i t

A ma Ma er Saint Rose, you are worthy of glory, of praise And to sing of your virtues, our voices we raise. To you we owe knowledge of truths most sublime, Truths which never can fade with the passing of time. Alma Mater, your children will e’er faithful be, Oh, do list to us now as we pledge loyalty. And in years that will come, When the day’s at its close, We shall think of you, then, Alma Mater, Saint Rose. — Winifred M. Quinn ’24

Academic Hera dr The history of academic dress reaches back to the days of the oldest European and British universities. From the basic design of this attire, the American colleges devised a suitable symbolism for academic apparel. The bachelor’s gown has long pointed sleeves in contrast to the master’s gown which is distinguished by the long oblong sleeves; the doctor’s gown is faced along the front with broad velvet panels and has full bell-shaped sleeves each bearing three horizontal bars of velvet. It is the hood that gives color to the academic costume and identifies the degree awarded. The hood is silk-lined with the colors of the institution conferring the degree. Gold and white are the official colors of The College of Saint Rose. The hood is bordered with velvet of a prescribed width and color to signify respective fields of learning: white for bachelor and master of arts, golden yellow for bachelor and master of science. Caps worn with bachelor’s and master’s gowns generally have black tassels. The tassel for the doctor’s cap is usually gold thread. ACADEMIC PROGRAMS AND DEGREES The College Experience Program In partnership with The College of Saint Rose and Living Resources, the College Experience Program is a two-year certificate program for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The curriculum is designed to foster independence and encourage students with developmental disabilities to explore areas of interest both professionally and socially. The program’s main goals are for each student in the program to be ready to enjoy independent living (with or without assistance) and work upon completion of the program. Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) The degree conferred by institutions of higher education for the completion of a four-year curriculum in liberal arts, originally with emphasis on the humanities, but more recently without regard to the special field of emphasis. Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) The degree conferred by institutions of higher education for the completion of a four-year curriculum in the visual arts. Bachelor of Science (B.S.) The degree conferred by institutions of higher learning for the completion of a four-year curriculum with emphasis on science or for the completion of a four-year curriculum in certain technical or professional fields.

c

Master of Arts (M.A), Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.), Master of Science (M.S.), Master of Science in Education (M.S. in Ed.) The degree of advanced character, usually a second degree, ranking above the bachelor’s degree and below the Ph.D., Ed.D. or other equivalent doctoral degrees. Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) The highest professional degree in education awarded by colleges or universities for the advanced study of education, usually granted at the completion of the equivalent of a minimum of two or three years of graduate work in a teacher education school, college or university. Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) The highest degree granted to one in the field of pastoral theology. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) The highest earned academic degree, which requires the pursuit of original research. Juris Doctor (J.D.) The first degree awarded for the study of law.

Honorar Degree Reci ien DANIEL P. NOLAN, J.D. Chair, The College of Saint Rose Board of Trustees President and Chief Executive Officer, Hugh Johnson Advisors Daniel P. Nolan, philanthropist, wealth manager, prominent regional business leader and avid supporter of higher education, has noted that he is probably best known as a man with his name on a gym. “If you ‘Google’ me, the first 100 entries are of my name on a basketball court,” Nolan has remarked. “As I gaze around the campus and see the ‘Lally’ School of Education, the ‘Hearst’ Center for Communications and Interactive Media, ‘Huether’ School of Business, and the ‘Daniel P. Nolan’ Gymnasium, I am always a little amused. “But then,” he noted, “I probably get more publicity than all of them combined. You can’t open the sports section without seeing the ‘Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.’” Low key, direct, approachable, enthusiastic and a sports fan, Nolan is as much a fixture at The College of Saint Rose as many long time members of the administration, faculty and alumni community. He has served on the Board of Trustees since 1990 and, since 2003, as chair. In July, Nolan will step down from the leadership to focus on his numerous other civic commitments. But he will remain on the board to help the College continue to move forward, while still retaining its personalized commitment to every student. “That mission was started in 1920, almost 100 years ago by the Sisters of Saint Joseph,” Nolan has said. “And I am proud that the board continues, with the guidance of the Sisters, to live that mission.”

\\ As chair, colleagues say Nolan has contributed expertise gleaned from his decades as a financial strategist. Trustee Judy Calogero ’80, who will succeed Nolan as chair, describes him as a quiet leader who is keenly aware of the people around him, and their perspectives. “He is decisive,” she says, “but he does not make decisions alone.” Nolan has been instrumental in not only guiding College investments and modernizing various practices but also explaining the technical details. His contacts have also proven invaluable. Among them is global business leader Joseph Plumeri, whom Nolan once invited to speak at Saint Rose. Plumeri’s enthusiasm for the College later inspired him to pledge the $1 million gift that launched fundraising to build the top-tier Christian Plumeri Sports Complex. Nolan played a pivotal role in seeing that project through and has supported nearly every other major campaign at the College. He was recognized with the Spirit of Saint Rose Award and, along with his wife Sally, named a Community of Excellence honoree. In 2004 the College recognized Nolan’s generosity by naming the gym after him. As anyone who attends Golden Knights basketball games is aware, Nolan, a former competitive basketball player, is no stranger to the sidelines. From his seat in the second row he makes it eminently clear how he feels about a given call or play. Nolan was born in Scranton, Penn. His grandfather was a coal miner and his father worked at a print shop. His father’s job brought the family to Albany when Nolan was 5 years old. He graduated from the University at Albany in 1974 with a finance degree and attended Albany Law School, graduating in 1978. He now chairs the law school’s board of trustees. Professionally, he has devoted his legal education to the financial world. Nolan is president and CEO of Hugh Johnson Advisors, which manages more than $1 billion in discretionary assets and serves as a consultant for more than $1 billion in investment assets. Previously, he was a partner at the Ayco Company, who led the effort to integrate Ayco into Goldman’s Private Wealth Management practice. Nolan’s name appears on a lengthy list of corporate boards. Among them he is a director of Boston Private Bank. But he is never far removed from Saint Rose students. Nolan takes part in panel discussions on campus, has provided internships and hired business students. Today, he will make his commitment clear, when he does what he has done for many years: shake the hand of each graduating student who walks across the stage.

In Recognition Daniel P. Nolan, whether explaining the nuances of investment management to your fellow trustees, advising a recent Saint Rose graduate on his or her first job, or leading and generously contributing to every Saint Rose fundraising campaign, you have given your complete attention and boundless energy to The College of Saint Rose. You have led our board and guided our administrators with a kind and firm hand, always giving others an opportunity for input. During your eleven-year tenure as board chair, you have helped steer the transformation of our college. You are a true Golden Knight, providing mentorship for many of our students while guiding them into exciting careers in the business world. You are a constant presence at our basketball games in a gymnasium that bears your name, cheering loudly for the Golden Knights. For living out the values of our sponsors, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, The College of Saint Rose is pleased to confer upon you, Daniel P. Nolan, the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, with all its rights and privileges.

Honorar Degree Reci ien HARRY M. ROSENFELD American Newspaper Editor As a nine-year-old boy living in Nazi Germany, Harry Rosenfeld saw the Gestapo take his father away in the middle of the night. As a Washington Post editor nearly four decades later, he awoke to news of a burglary at the Watergate office complex that would eventually bring down an American president. Throughout his long, respected career, Rosenfeld has gone well beyond simply witnessing these notorious episodes of history. As a writer and editor at the highest level, he has devoted himself to getting those stories out to the world. And if there is a common thread from Kristallnacht to Watergate, he says, it is “the indispensability of investigative journalism to the welfare of the nation.” Rosenfeld places himself in the story with “From Kristallnacht to Watergate.” Published last year, the anecdote-filled memoir chronicles his childhood as a Jew in Nazi Germany, his family’s move to New York and what became a distinguished career at The Herald Tribune and The Washington Post. Rosenfeld was raised in Berlin. As Nazi persecutions intensified, he was forced to attend a segregated school. And one night, the Gestapo arrested his father and deported him to his native Poland. Within weeks, Hilter unleashed Kristallnacht and Rosenfeld walked through streets littered with the shattered glass of Jewish businesses. He saw the temple in which he attended school being burned. Unlike countless other Jews, Rosenfeld notes, his father was permitted to return to Berlin. After five years of trying, the family emigrated in 1939 and Rosenfeld grew up a fully assimilated American. He graduated from Stuyvesant High School in New York City and from Syracuse University before pursuing graduate studies at Columbia University. During the Korean War, he attained the rank of corporal and served as a military historian. Rosenfeld began his newspaper career at The

\\ Herald Tribune, where he had worked after high school and during college breaks. In 1966, The Washington Post hired him. Rosenfeld is best known as the editor who, six years later, helped oversee early coverage of the Watergate scandal. The Pulitzer Prize-winning stories led to impeachment hearings, the resignation of President Richard Nixon and a series of ethics laws. It started in 1972 with a break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate offices. Rosenfeld, the Post metro editor, oversaw young reporters Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward (whom he hired) as they linked the burglary to Nixon. “It scared the marrow out of my bones,” Rosenfeld has said as details surfaced. Rosenfeld later successfully fought off efforts to replace the now-legendary Woodward and Bernstein with more experienced Post reporters. The power struggle was captured on the screen when Jack Warden played Rosenfeld in “All the President’s Men.” The 1976 movie based on Woodward and Bernstein’s best-selling book won five Oscars. The episode inspired a new generation of journalists, eager to break open the next big scandal. In 1978, Rosenfeld was named editor of the Albany Times Union and now-defunct Knickerbocker News. He retired in 1997, but continued for years to write a nationally syndicated Sunday column. As editor at large, he serves as a consultant and a member of the paper’s editorial board. Rosenfeld and his wife, Anne, continue to live in Albany. Rosenfeld has served as a Pulitzer juror and as vice chairman of the New York State Conference on Fair Trial/Free Press. He also took part in three state commissions studying the use of cameras in the courtroom. He was the first recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award established by Syracuse University's College of Arts and Sciences. He was honored as well with the First Amendment Award of the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith in Los Angeles for Watergate, as well as the Freedom of Information Award from the Associated Press. Other awards include one from the Black United Front of Washington, D.C., another from the New York State Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission and Institute for Non-Violence. In addition to a personal glimpse of historic events, Rosenfeld’s story reflects the influence of early experiences on the choices that follow. “I had in my mind to do what I could to help assure that what happened in Hitler’s Germany would not happen here,” Rosenfeld writes in his acclaimed book. “Looking back, I discerned a theme underpinning much of my journalistic labors: holding to account the accountable, the more powerful the better.”

In Recognition Harry M. Rosenfeld, the persecution you experienced as a child in Nazi Germany inspired you to dedicate your life to holding government accountable to its citizens. You have used the tools of journalism to shine a light on activities the public might not otherwise see, from the local town hall to the highest echelons of power. You cultivated the talents of the young reporters covering the Watergate scandal and have done so ever since, ensuring that journalists in newsrooms across the country share your own insistence on writing stories that have impact. As an editor and an author, you have shown that a strong democracy relies on an intrepid press. For reminding us to not just challenge authority but to ask the right questions, Harry M. Rosenfeld, The College of Saint Rose is pleased to confer upon you the degree Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, with all its rights and privileges.

Caron e et Meda Reci ien MARGARET M. KIRWIN, ED.D. Interim President; Professor of Education; Academic Leader When Dr. Margaret Kirwin was named dean of the Thelma P. Lally School of Education, she said she felt as though she had not just held many jobs at The College of Saint Rose but engaged in several careers here. That was seven years and three positions ago. Today, Dr. Kirwin, “Maggie” to her family, friends and colleagues, has filled nearly every top academic post in her 40 years at Saint Rose. For the past year, she has led the College as interim president, after spending the previous year as interim provost. She served in both positions during a search for the permanent appointments. And whether they encountered her as professor, dean, provost or president, members of the Saint Rose community have been struck by Dr. Kirwin’s commitment to an institution where she has formed close collaborations at every level. She is foremost an educator with a long-held belief in the power of teaching to create social and economic change. It is a conviction that has guided her as a public school teacher, a professor of teacher education and dean of the nationally renowned Lally School. Dr. Kirwin joined the Saint Rose education faculty in 1973, coordinating the childhood education program which now places undergraduate and graduate education students in classrooms throughout the region. In 1995, she expanded the College’s influence significantly by establishing a partnership with the Center for Integrated Teacher Education that has enabled thousands of teachers in the metropolitan New York City area to earn certifications as school administrators.

\\ Dr. Kirwin was named the Lally School dean in 2007 and continued building relationships that benefit both Saint Rose and the communities the College touches. She developed a multi-platform collaboration with neighboring Pine Hills Elementary School that features the highly successful Help Yourself Academy after-school program. On behalf of the College, she was also the leader of a collaboration with area colleges that successfully secured the grant for Project Slate, a federally funded project that introduces service learning into the classroom. In addition, her close relationship with her beloved sister, Dolly, inspired Dr. Kirwin to partner with Living Resources Corporation to establish the College Experience Program. The program enables young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities a chance to experience college life and gain independence. Anyone who has attended a Saint Rose commencement has seen College Experience Program graduates cross the stage first to accept certificates signifying their hard work. Even as interim president, Dr. Kirwin has continued to advise each one. Given her significant contributions, it is fitting that she is the first lay woman to lead Saint Rose since its founding in 1920. As interim president, she gracefully assumed management of both day-to-day duties and long-range planning, while also representing the College in the press and community, attending campus events — and even teaching a course in higher education leadership. Adaptable by nature, she is hardly complacent. Raised in New Jersey, she credits her parents with giving her experience with the family business and a strong social conscience. She decided in her teens to become a teacher. After completing her bachelor’s degree at the College of Mount Saint Vincent and a master of education at Boston College, she earned her doctorate of education at the State University of New York at Albany. She began her career in a third grade classroom in rural New Jersey. While reading “Three Billy Goats Gruff,” she realized her students didn’t know what a bridge was. She arranged a bus trip to show them. She introduced them to classical music, taught them to waltz and visited their families. At their eighth grade graduation, many former students told her their third grade education had had an impact. Now, as she prepares to retire, Dr. Kirwin leaves a legacy of educational activism for several more generations of teachers, counselors, and administrators – as well as their own students from kindergarten through graduate school.

In Recognition Dr. Margaret Kirwin, as a new teacher in rural New Jersey and inner city Boston, you saw the benefits of both working with the system and pushing the boundaries. And for 40 years at The College of Saint Rose, you have consistently written the grants, built the programs and created the partnerships to help teachers empower young people. As professor, dean, provost and president, you have insisted on high standards as you also lent your wisdom to shaping College-wide policies. And you have extended the boundaries of a Saint Rose education to teachers in metropolitan New York and elementary school students a block from our own campus. You have become the College’s preeminent servant-leader. In recognition of your 40 years of enthusiastic commitment, The College of Saint Rose bestows upon you our highest honor, the Carondelet Medal.

e Carondelet Medal The medal is designed as an award for an individual who, through working in the community, has enabled others to move toward a fuller development of their personhood. Thus is the larger human family nourished. The recipient has given evidence of commitment to a constant striving for excellence as well as to equal access to education, as seen in the College’s early role in the education of women. In addition, the recipient is one committed to the Saint Rose tradition of the liberal arts, understood here as education of the whole person, and to those moral and religious values that are consistent with Judeo-Christian tradition. Finally, in conferring this medal, The College of Saint Rose recognizes the individual for exceptional contributions to education, which, in the broadest sense of the word, is the passing on to others that which one has received.

The medal was designed and executed by the late Paul Cavanagh, Trustee Emeritus of the College.
