Undergraduate Programs: Social Work Social work majors develop critical skills in assessment and intervention with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities — precisely the skills students will use in their careers. Three semesters of field work gives them hands-on experience in the area of their choosing. Saint Rose graduates go on to work in schools, hospitals, residential treatment centers, drug and alcohol clinics, probation offices, nursing homes, and daycare centers. The bachelor’s program in social work is accredited by the Council for Social Work Education.

Undergraduate Programs: Sociology Sociology majors investigate social inequality and social justice action in society. Students gain critical thinking skills through researching societal issues with social research and theory. Students are prepared for a vast range of careers from government, business, and community advocacy to the law.

Faculty The College’s social science faculty members, nearly all of whom hold their Ph.D., have an exceptionally diverse array of accomplishments and interests. They have presented and consulted internationally, published in respected journals, and studied issues from

One has completed a research fellowship at the Columbia University School of Public Health; another infuses his social work scholarship with his poetry and knowledge of Asian theatre; and two teach in the College’s American City First-Year Experience, an interdisciplinary year-long program for freshmen to promote critical thinking and writing.

Sociology majors gain valuable hands-on experience and firsthand exposure to issues of social justice through internships and service learning in not-for-profit and government agencies as well as private organizations and businesses.


Remarkable Outcomes One Saint Rose graduate has served as commissioner of the NYS Division of Housing and Community Renewal. Immediately upon graduation, another sociology major became the Director of Albany City, a religious not-for-profit organization that focuses on building up leaders in every community one kid at a time. Saint Rose sociology and social work alumni have pursued successful careers in human services, social justice not-for-profit agencies, campus ministry, public administration, leadership in government agencies, communications, market research, university teaching and the law, among many other fields. Many pursue graduate studies at universities such as Columbia, Fordham, and the University at Albany.
