Proud to support the Resene Architecture and Design Film Festival. homemagazine.co.nz

We’re delighted to present the sixth annual Resene Architecture and Design Film Festival in cinemas nationwide from May to July 2017. The festival is one of the largest of its kind worldwide and showcases some of the visionary architects of the 20th century along with the impact of architecture on place, space and culture. Our design films feature automotive design through to landscape, fashion and photography while other films question the way we work and play to the food we grow and eat. Rialto Cinemas aims to inspire audiences and the broader architecture and design industry by presenting a diverse mix of films sourced from all over the world. We would like to extend our special thanks to Resene, our naming rights sponsor, along with our gold partners Citta Design, Fisher & Paykel and Home Magazine, our bronze partner ADNZ (Architectural Designers New Zealand) and our wine partner Leftfield wines. Without their support, such a festival would not exist. We hope you enjoy this year’s selection of architecture and design films and look forward to seeing you at the cinema! In Auckland and Wellington, we will be adding extra screenings of the most popular films to the last days of the festival, so don’t forget to check rialto.co.nz for updates. Enjoy the festival! Kathryn Bennett Group Manager Rialto Cinemas

Welcome to the 2017 line-up. The scale of New Zealand’s urban growth is something that seldom leaves the airwaves. As we face the challenges surrounding housing, renewal and responsible development into the future, these films remind us that architecture and design are not just about physical space — they are potent tools in the forming and shaping of dynamic, sustainable communities. This year’s festival brings a range of films that we hope will prompt dialogue and stimulate thought. As we recognise the shift in focus towards the future, so too do we acknowledge that we each have a part to play in how our spaces and places are created, and how our planet is affected in the process. Beautifully shot with detailed drawings and interviews, see the inspiration, design, and occasional trials and tribulations of delivering these out-of-the-ordinary buildings.

This film examines the life of Finnish-American modernist and architectural visionary Eero Saarinen, whose iconic buildings include National Historic Landmarks such as the celebrated St. Louis’ Gateway Arch, the General Motors Technical Center in Michigan and New York’s TWA Flight Center at JFK International Airport.

Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners currently operates offices in London, Melbourne, Sydney and New York City. With world-wide acclaim and over 100 awards for architecture and civic design, this is an insight into one of the world’s finest contemporary architects and his dynamic practice.

This cinematic journey is narrated with genuine intrigue, mixed with love and loss, by Saarinen’s son Eric (Director of Photography). He visits the sites of his father’s work and celebrates, through spectacular drone-captured photography, the extraordinary timelessness of Saarinen’s designs. Saarinen’s life was tragically cut short at the age of 51. His body of work reveals, even after many years, that his was one of the most influential careers in American architecture. 20TH-CENTURY VISIONARIES

A renewed interest is emerging in mid 20th-century architects who exploded the comfortable constraints of the past to create a robust and daring modernist future.

Having a Cigarette with Álvaro Siza

2016, Director: Elissa Brown, 47 min

2013, Director: Michael Dorsey, 48 min

One of the 20th century’s most iconic architects, Álvaro Siza is a Prizker Prize winner, socialist and passionate smoker.

Celebrated Canadian architect Roger D’Astous had a rich and lively 46-year career. Beginning his training as an apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright, he sought a boldly modern and independent approach to architecture.

NEUTRA DOUBLE FEATURE The first of our Neutra double feature, Windshield: A Vanished Vision immerses us in the 1930s to reveal an intimate portrait of a patrician couple, a leading modern architect, and the story of the ill-fated house that they create.

In 1959, a government employee named Richard Oyler from Lone Pine, California, asked world-famous modern architect Richard Neutra to design his modest family home. To Oyler’s surprise, Neutra agreed. Thus began an unlikely friendship that led to the design and construction of an iconic mid-century modern masterpiece.

An intimate insight into the practice of one of the world’s leading architects, the film’s simultaneously formal and open approach mirrors the balance between stature and humility within the Siza’s own work.

Considered the “father of California Modern Architecture”, Time Magazine put Richard Neutra on their cover in 1949, ranking him second only to Frank Lloyd Wright among America’s greatest architects.

Their chosen architect was Richard Neutra and the home, named for its expansive use of glass, was one of the most innovative and intriguing of his hugely celebrated career. Through evocative home movies, and extremely detailed correspondence, the film explores the pivotal impact of the house on Neutra’s career and takes us on a journey with a couple caught between the values of their upbringings and their evolving social ideals. 2016, Directors: Fernando and Humberto Campana, 22 min, subtitled

Known as a flamboyant “starchitect” in the 1960s, he designed numerous alluring residential houses that represent the beginnings of an “organic” style. Beautifully shot, these houses appear effortlessly rooted into their natural surroundings. Devoted to building homes that supported how his clients lived, he was captivated by their routines and day-to-day lives, even building one house entirely around a staircase. Along with several churches he also worked on mammoth projects including the Expo of 1967 and the 1976 Olympic Village, which was riddled with controversy. Through interviews with D’Astous’s sons, former work colleagues and homeowners, the film follows his professional journey from the early 1950s to the late 1990s and constructs a faithful, inspired portrait of an iconoclast who always thought outside of the box and pushed the limits of design.

20TH-CENTURY VISIONARIES

A fascination with modernism, innovation and the rapidly evolving American building scene spurred the eccentric and delightful John and Anne Brown to commission a summer house for their family on Fishers Island, New York — a house they hoped would be a “distinguished monument in the history of architecture”.

Narrated by Siza himself — in conversation with the both the camera and fellow architect Eduardo Souta de Moura over multiple cigarettes — we are taken on a tour of Siza’s work, listening and lingering as Siza reflects upon architecture as an agent of time, memory, beauty and responsibility.

The Novgorod Spaceship

2014, Director: Francesca Moltini, 78 min, subtitled

2015, Directors: Pablo Iraburu and Migueltxo Molina, 82 min, subtitled

2016 Director: Andrei Rozen, 45 min, subtitled

When the Berlin Wall fell, the idea of separation was dismissed as something from the past. Reality, sadly, is exactly the opposite — never in the history of humanity have we had so many walls. Now, with Trump’s America, we are threatened with another.

Like an abandoned alien spaceship, the building of Dostoevsky’s Drama Theatre stands on the bank of Volkhov River, only a kilometre away from the walls of famous Novgorod Kremlin.

This film narrates real stories of people who live on both sides of very different walls. The division between South Africa and Zimbabwe, the separation wall between the United States and Mexico, the fence in Melilla that serves as a border between Spain and Morocco. Eight architects, eight houses, eight stories, eight paradigms of contemporary living.

Originally filmed for an exhibition of the same name at the Salone del Mobile in Milan, this documentary combines more than 30 video contributions. It intimately reveals the homes of the eight architects, broadening visions of domestic architecture and interior design, and suggesting that this discipline is most suited to evolution and experimentation.

Pioneer Erected during the final years of Soviet rule, this remarkable example of modernist architecture has, for many decades, continued to mock the ancient heritage of the city, as well as the modest tastes of its populace. The story of the theatre’s uneasy survival, its persistent inability to fit into the Novgorod’s surroundings, and its slow but sure demise at the hands of greedy bureaucrats become a direct metaphor for Russian society today.

We also get a glimpse into eight international cities at the centre of a great metamorphosis: Tokyo, Berlin, Mumbai, San Paolo, Milan, London, Paris and New York. Here’s a chance to approach the multiple forms of living, at different latitudes, through the construction of personal narrations, stories of spaces and objects, new images and hidden clues.

2016, Director: Ryan Clancy, 5 min

Built in a time of “dreams, hopes and revolutions”, the building is now an architectural freak: unloved and uncared for, it sails high above the comforting provinciality of Novgorod the Great.

The approach is centred on the wall concept and avoids entering geopolitical analysis or the strategic and moral assessment of the situation. We are instead invited into the world of each protagonist through personal portraits. We follow them in their daily lives and see that, on each side, the same dramas, worries, loves and losses are felt. The absurd symmetry of each wall serves as a mirror and reminds us that everybody shares the same essence, no matter what side you are on.

Pioneer is a permanent, large-scale wooden sculpture constructed at the Tippet Rise Art Center in Fishtail, Montana by Artist Stephen Talasnik. Informed by space architecture of the early 1960s, it is engineered with yellow cedar from the Northwest, USA. The piece is influenced by traditions of 20th-century visionary architecture. In dialogue with the natural setting of a geological “bowl”, the artist examines the influence of exploration on his creative process.

Yohji Yamamoto, one of high fashion’s most influential and enigmatic designers, opens up and shares his deepest insights. “I shout, ‘Live your creative life! Live your creative life!’” he says, reciting his daily saying that helps him focus his work and create following his own unique path.

Take a ride to the Golden Age of automotive design, and park up in Turin, Italy.

Deep in the heart of Mumbai you’ll find Sheikh Rehman, the city’s last painter of film posters. His studio is run in the old masters’ style — behind the screen of an eccentric old Hindi-Film cinema called ‘Alfred Talkies’.

Pritzker Prize-nominated British-born architect Laurie Baker was often called the Father of Indian Green Architecture. This film, created over four years and directed by his grandson, reveals why.

Affordable, beautiful, environmentally conscious housing for all was his mantra — and he made the “impossible” a reality for thousands who could never have otherwise afforded a house. Employing ordinary materials in extraordinary ways, the staggering and dynamic use he made of brick became his signature. Modest, kind, eccentric and incredibly resourceful (always with recycled paper notebooks in his pocket) Laurie Baker reminds us again that good architecture — the kind that nourishes a community — is for the masses not the privileged classes.

Since the release of the Cistealia 202 in 1947 (commonly referred to as a “rolling sculpture”) Turin was known as an automobile design epicentre, where some of the most famous cars in the history of automobiles have been created. In a series of intimate and unprecedented interviews, Yamamoto reveals his thoughts like never before and shares his deepest insights into his personal life. Interviews with key figures — family, friends, and closest confidants — provide even more access to this iconic Japanese craftsman’s life journey and the core values that he and his clothing embody. This film sheds light on Yamamoto’s artistic approach and creative working process, contrasting them directly with how he sees the fashion industry today and the direction society, in Japan and globally, is heading. DESIGNING HAPPINESS

CROSSING THE DIVIDE

It was after a chance meeting with Gandhi that Baker (a Quaker in faith) devoted himself to India and worked (much of it in the remote Himalayas) to serve the people. Architect and humanitarian, accomplished cartoonist, artist and innovative designer, Baker wore many hats. But his undeniable accomplishment came in his 50s when he set to democratise architecture with his innovative, radical ideas.

Here, Rehman is both artist and guru, comedian and philosopher. But he’s living in a rapidly changing world. Today’s film posters are printed on plastic, and the cinemas once large audiences are being driven away due to Mumbai’s construction boom.

Renowned photographer Rose Hartman is no shrinking violet. She doesn’t let anything get in the way of whatever party, fashion show or opening she wants to shoot, not even an invitation.

Can a game like Minecraft change the world? With cities everywhere struggling to cope with the population growth that increased urbanisation brings, can video games be harnessed to help the residents, especially young people, take part in planning, and fixing their own cities?

“When you put beauty in a place that has none, that’s a game changer.”

Some call her brash, some say she’s rude, but everyone agrees her shrewd eye has defined the New York City social scene for decades.

Acclaimed Austrian graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister lives in New York with a thriving company designing album covers for like of The Rolling Stones, Jay-Z and Talking Heads.

In what started out as a conceptual design project and evolved into a film, he pursues three controlled experiments of meditation, therapy and drugs, grading himself along the way. An often entertaining confessional that is as much a reality show as an experimental art piece, we see real life creep in and confound his process: art, sex, love and death prove impossible to disentangle as Sagmeister searches for bliss. His unique designs anchor the film and contrast with the painfully personal experiences that take him on a journey — perhaps closer to himself than he ever intended. note:

With strategic alliances with groups such as UN Habitat, and successful proving grounds in locations such as Nepal, Nairobi, Katmandu, the film reveals the real-world social change that game-oriented city planning brings. A fixture at Studio 54 in the late 1970s, she reveled in stealthily documenting stars like Mick and Bianca Jagger and Andy Warhol. She was the first to move behind the curtains of Fashion Week catwalks to shoot models and designers at work, making quick fans of designers such as Donna Karan and Carolina Herrera.

How will our cities look in 20–100 years time?

But what motivates her to snap the intimate moments of celebrity and fashion? Is she simply working, or is she working to belong? Moving seamlessly between street art and portraiture, Hartman slows down just long enough to allow this energetic profile to capture her for a change.

As part of an urban gardening movement taking root in South LA, people are planting to transform their neighbourhoods and are changing their own lives in the process. Calling for people to put down their guns and pick up their shovels, these “gangster gardeners” are creating an oasis in the middle of America’s most notoriously dangerous places. Can You Dig This? follows the inspirational journeys of four unlikely gardeners, discovering what happens when they put their hands in the soil. This is not a story of science and economics. 2015, Director: Trevor Meier, 85 min

Birthplace of the unexpected, the weird and the wonderful.

By the year 2050, Earth’s human population will reach 10 billion. This begs a sobering question: How are we going to feed such a multitude of mouths?

leftfieldwines.com

10 Billion — What’s on Your Plate? takes a broad view and leads us on a globe-trotting journey, working through the food growing options we have before us. The film begins with ultra-efficient, industrial food production and considers both its perils and benefits. Secondly, it explores a more ecological approach, which produces much less food, but preserves our already suffering environment. One thing is clear — we don’t have much time. URBAN FUTURES

The dichotomy is evident: one in three people on the planet are starving, and global food waste is increasing. This film covers the ethics and best practices of food sustainability to offer an educated vision. If you want to know your role in the global food chain, this is the very best starter.

What if working together for the good of all was the most common business model? This film tracks several organisations as they use nontraditional business models to strive towards building a more co-operative future. The focus that unites them all is their belief in that human effort should be rewarding fairly and proportionately. By putting humanity before the bottom line, they are finding their place in a new economy that is no longer dominated by profits and big business. A New Economy tells seven interwoven stories. Among them are a small craft-brew co-op, a peer-to-peer open hardware lab and an urban agricultural social enterprise. Other stories examine housing, public spaces and the use of technology in building community — all the while blending the economic and social needs of a functioning new economy with co-operative values and principles as its base. Revolutionary, sustainable and dedicated to a people-friendly future, these businesses show there are many ways to make money that needn’t sacrifice social values.
