hatever your breakfast style, you’ll feel spoilt for choice at the restaurants and cafés at St David’s. For an authentic Italian start to your day, pay Carluccio’s a visit. We recommend the Eggs Florentine - a perfectly poached egg perched on top grilled ciabatta with spinach and hollandaise. Or, for a more fiery wake up call, opt for the Eggs Diavolo with spicy n’duja and a Bloody Mary. Don’t forget that Carluccio’s also has an amazing deli with pastries and breads a-plenty, which is ideal if you don’t have time to sit down to enjoy a lengthy breakfast in the restaurant. Looking for a cool and quirky brunch hangout? Head to Cosy Club where brunch is served until 5pm. The crowd-pleasing Buttermilk Pancakes are always a tasty option - choose to tuck into a stack of three or six with toppings of either berry compote, banana and crème fraîche, or Vegetarian Breakfast at Cosy Club

A freshly squeezed orange juice is the perfect accompaniment to whichever dish you choose! Serving up American diner vibes, Ed’s Easy Diner is the place to go for your favourite flavours from the USA. From Fried Lickin’ Chicken & Waffles to The Stack Attack, these hearty breakfasts will have your mouth watering. What’s more, the brekkies at Ed’s are bottomless, so you can clear your plate and go again (and again, and again) until 11.30am every day. Take advantage of refillable coffee too with Ed’s Famous Bottomless Cup! Sometimes nothing hits the spot like a bacon or sausage bap on a Saturday morning. We love the Croque Madame with smoked ham and a fried egg. If you prefer something lighter for breakfast, pop into Pret a Manger, where you’ll find a delicious and varied menu. hunning the ‘Tex Mex’ stereotype with every plate served, Wahaca is the brainchild of Masterchef winner Thomasina Miers. This is the Mexican restaurant chain’s only restaurant in Wales and we’re so glad to have it in our lives. Book or drop in (some tables can’t be reserved) for a taste of Mexican market eating. It’s a sociable, bustling place with friendly staff and an upstairs cocktail bar that’s perfect for people watching.

The menu is an adventure into Japanese cuisine, from the kokoro bowls (‘kokoro’ means ‘spirit, heart and mind’) to the grilled duck donburi. Irresistible sides are edamame beans, steamed buns and crispy chilli squid. Pair with Tokyo’s finest Asahi beer. For vegans, you’re spoilt for choice by the dedicated vegan menu that shakes up plant-based cooking. Have you tried the vegan egg that tops off the Avant Gard’n? A visit to Wagamama is made more exciting by the themed, ever-changing branding – colouring placemats anyone? They even transformed the Cardiff restaurant with cherry blossom decorations to celebrate Hanami, the Japanese custom of enjoying spring’s blossom season. Sheer joy!

e’re so excited to welcome The Ivy’s first Welsh brasserie to St David’s this winter. Located on The Hayes, the new restaurant offers sophisticated yet friendly all-day dining in a beautiful setting complete with interiors inspired by Cardiff’s heritage (check out the dragon above the bar)! Whether you’re visiting for breakfast, lunch, dinner or afternoon tea, the menus see modern British classics featuring seasonal ingredients. Alongside the food menus is also an exciting series of locally inspired drinks, including the Bae Caerdydd cocktail, which mixes vanilla vodka, Xante Pear Brandy and Chambord, with lemon juice, sugar syrup, pineapple juice and fresh raspberries. There’s also an extensive Champagne and wine list, so you can celebrate any occasion in style.

We caught up with Head Chef, Bartek Byba, to discover what makes The Ivy Cardiff so special, and what his favourite dishes on the menu are… Hi Bartek! We’re so delighted The Ivy Cardiff has now opened here at St David’s. What can we expect from the menu? Our menus are all-encompassing, serving everything from coffee and breakfast pastries, to more substantial dishes such as the roasted lamb rump with glazed Chantenay carrots, pattypan squash, baby turnips, creamed potato, parsley and red wine
RESTAURANTS
What do you think makes The Ivy Cardiff such a special dining destination? In my opinion it’s a mixture of everything – friendly and professional service, good food and a vibrant atmosphere. We have something to suit all occasions and our interiors are certainly striking and impactful! What would you say inspires you most in the kitchen? Are you influenced by the latest food trends when creating new dishes? When cooking and creating new dishes I
like to experiment by mixing together a number of traditional dishes to create a new culinary variation. It’s very exciting when you bring together a number of ingredients and flavours and it really works. Finally, if you were to dine at the brasserie yourself, what time of day would you choose to visit and what would you order? For me it depends on the weather. If it’s sunny outside I prefer to choose something light, such as the bang bang chicken salad, but if the weather is cold then it would have to be our classic Ivy shepherd’s pie– warming and comforting.

ho doesn’t love a cheeky Nando’s? Home of the legendary flame-grilled PERi-PERi chicken, Nando’s is something of an institution and the perfect pitstop during a day shopping. We all have our go-to favourites from the Nando's menu - whether you love feasting on a half chicken with chips and garlic bread, or filling up on a sweet potato and butternut wrap with corn on the cob and coleslaw. With so many combos to choose from, the possibilities are endless. Don't forget to finish your meal with a Portuguese custard tart and a Galão (Portuguese for latté!) For little ones, there's the yummy Nandinos’ menu, which is packed with flavoursome options.
14
How hot can you handle? Don’t be that person who requests an Extra Hot flag to stick in your Lemon & Herb chicken at Nando’s just to impress your mates. Embrace your love for just a mere hint of heat, and ignore the jeers from everyone else at your table. You do you. Did you know that each and every one of Nando’s PERi-PERi chillies are grown and handpicked in Southern Africa? They’re then mixed with garlic, fresh lemons and other delicious ingredients to make Nando’s famous marinades, bastes and sauces in a variety of flavours and heat. We think every level of spice on the PERi-ometer is super tasty, but which do you go for?

AN AWARD-WINNING VEGAN MENU If you’ve visited Cosy Club, you’ll know that there’s a dedicated vegan menu, packed with brunch, tapas, mains and puddings. From the Thai Green Vegetable Curry served with spring rolls and a sweet chilli dipping sauce, to the sumptuous Chocolate & Orange Torte, it’s easy to see why the menu won Vegan Menu of the Year at the 2018 PETA awards. We caught up with Managing Director of Cosy Club, Amber Wood, to discover more about their vegan dishes. She
explained: “Our guests provide the inspiration, and so do the many more widely accessible vegan ingredients beyond your usual fresh fruits and vegetables. Take our new Beyond Meat burger – specifically developed as a plant based alternative by Beyond Meat.” Fancy trying a dish from Cosy Club’s vegan menu? Amber’s got a recommendation for you: “I would have to say our new vegan ‘fish’ and chips is my favourite. We use a nori seaweed sheet and marinate our tofu in a secret recipe before deep frying it in a homemade batter. We serve it up with thickcut chips and vegan tartare sauce – delicious!”
A CREATIVE VEGAN MASTERMIND We couldn’t believe that the ‘egg’ topping Wagamama’s Avant Gard’n kokoro bowl wasn’t real at first sight! It was Gaz Oakley, originally from Cyncoed in Cardiff, who invented the coconut and sriracha vegan egg, and who collaborated with Wagamama to create the dish, which was first rolled out in the London and Cardiff restaurants. Gaz clearly has a real passion for veganism, as well as the clever creativity to produce flavoursome and eye-catching dishes. The richness and spice of his vegan egg perfectly complement the barbecue glazed seitan, grilled asparagus and king oyster mushrooms. The dish is served on a bed of white rice, topped with fresh
edamame, carrot and spring onion, and finished with sweet amai sauce, a sprinkle of sesame seeds and half a fresh lime. It’s a taste sensation that’s too good to miss! Head over to Gaz’s YouTube channel and watch his 15 Minute Meals for bags of vegan homecooking inspiration. In one episode he fries up a vegan nasi goreng, saying: “I started my YouTube channel over two years ago to show people how good vegan food could be and hopefully encourage some people to go vegan or at least cut down on their meat intake.” © Simon Smith

The range of fresh meat or veg fillings is guaranteed to get your tastebuds tingling. Customise your choice with a selection of sauces and accompaniments to add some zing! You can also opt to tuck into sides of fries, cheesy fries or tortilla chips. For those with a sweettooth, don’t miss the churros with cinnamon sugar and a caramel dipping sauce.
Go naked
Ok, not literally... But we do love the Naked Burrito at Barburrito, which is simply a burrito in a bowl, without the wrap. Load the bowl up with your favourite meat or veg filling, add your choice of fresh ingredients plus ‘extra gusto additions’, then grab a fork and tuck in. There’s also the Superfood Bowl, which swaps the rice for crunchy slaw and fresh guacamole. It’s a great option for lunch if you’re feeling more virtuous. We hear it counts as 4 of your 5-a-day!

Prepare to be wowed with a menu of chocolate-y goodness. On chilly days, warm up with a hot chocolate in one of the many delicious flavours, including mint chocolate and chilli chocolate, or try a Coffee Chocolat Latte

Meet a chocolatier
We caught up with chocolatier Kiri Kalenko to find out what it’s like working in the Hotel Chocolat kitchen, and whether there could be a Welsh cake chocolate on the cards…
Q: Hi Kiri! We’re so excited to welcome Hotel Chocolat to St David’s. We’d love to know... How did you become a chocolatier? It sounds like a dream job! A: It is! I studied Home Economics at uni and did a module in New Product Development. I loved how creative it was and from that minute I knew I wanted a job involving it. A couple of months after I graduated I saw a job advert for an Apprentice Chocolatier at Hotel Chocolat. I couldn’t believe that kind of job even existed. I was over the moon when I got it!

Q: Which chocolate are you most proud of creating? A: I’d say Mojito, because it was the first chocolate I ever developed. It hit the shelves about 10 years ago now. The first time seeing one of your chocolates in a Hotel Chocolat store is a pretty good feeling! Q: What inspires the flavour combinations? A: In the Inventing Room, we’re a team of people who are obsessed with food! We get our inspiration from everywhere; restaurants, food festivals, cooking at each other’s homes. We’re constantly on the lookout for new ingredients, recipes and flavour combinations - we see it as a hobby rather than part of our job.
Q: We know Hotel Chocolat has reimagined carrot cake into chocolate, but we’re a big fan of Welsh cakes over here in Cardiff. Could it be done? A: Tarow is our chocolatier who loves turning desserts into chocolates - Carrot Cake being her creation. Funny you should ask about Welsh cakes, as we recently had a team trip to Betws-y-Coed and tried them for the first time! We should get it on our ‘to do’ list for a new chocolate. Q: And finally, we have to know... are you ever tempted to lick the spoon? A: Yes! But the kitchen rule is… don’t double dip! Read more: stdavidscardiff.com/kiri
