GAMEPLAN ABOUT NFL PLAY 60 The mission of the NFL PLAY 60 program is to empower the next generation of youth to be the most physically active and healthy. Since 2007, the league has committed more than $350 million to grants, health and fitness programming for youth, and media time for public service announcements. The NFL and its clubs have supported programs in more than 73,000 schools nationwide—giving more than 38 million children the chance to boost their activity levels. Through work with The Cooper Institute, American Heart Association, National Dairy Council, and other partners, the NFL Foundation supports the NFL PLAY 60 program which includes initiatives such as the NFL PLAY 60 App and Virtual Experiences, Fuel Up to Play 60 and the NFL PLAY 60 FitnessGram Project. Research led by The Cooper Institute, and published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine in late 2016, validated the utility of the NFL PLAY 60 physical activity programming as a potential viable intervention to help improve youth aerobic capacity and body mass index in highly engaged schools. BOTTOM LINE: NFL PLAY 60 is a school-based youth health initiative that works. By implementing the various components of the program into a quality
6
physical education curriculum, and measuring progress through FitnessGram, participating students are becoming fitter and leaner.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? Unfortunately, our children are facing a serious health crisis today, one that’s not only reversible, but preventable as well. Consider this – over one third of today’s youth are overweight or obese, 70% of our population aged 17-24 is ineligible to serve in the military, and 80% of adolescents aren’t physically active for 60 minutes a day. This in turn is creating an entire generation that will experience chronic health conditions that are debilitating, expensive and deadly. Children deserve the opportunity to develop strong healthy bodies that are fueled by good nutrition and strength-building physical activity. The NFL PLAY 60 programming provides millions of children with this opportunity. Let’s work together to provide all children with the chance to grow into strong, healthy adults that are citizen ready.
BUILDING A HEALTHIER GENERATION NOW, AND WELL. INTO THE FUTURE.
GAMEPLAN ABOUT THE NFL PLAY 60 FITNESSGRAM PROJECT The goal of the NFL PLAY 60 FitnessGram Project is to examine the impact of PLAY 60 initiatives (Fuel Up to Play 60, PLAY 60 App/Virtual Experiences, and NFL Flag) on health-related physical fitness. → NFL PLAY 60 FitnessGram Schools
The Cooper Institute has been working closely with the NFL Foundation and other Play 60 partner organizations to develop an implementation model that allows teachers to effectively implement each one of the major NFL Play 60 programs and measure their impact on health-related fitness through the FitnessGram assessment. The NFL PLAY 60 FitnessGram Project team will work closely with NFL Clubs and partner organizations to select 10 schools per NFL market to participate in this robust project. Sixteen markets (160 schools) will begin the project during the 2019-2020 school year, with the remaining markets (160 schools) beginning in the 2020-2021 school year. Schools that are selected for the project will participate in a project-specific training event that will include representatives from each Play 60 partner organization. In addition to information about FitnessGram assessment and software, each of these schools will receive special instructions and resources related to the implementation of NFL FLAG, NFL PLAY 60 App and Virtual Experiences, and Fuel Up to Play 60. Each school will be expected to complete the following steps: 1. 2. 3. 4.
Attend a training event to learn best-practices for the implementation of the FitnessGram assessment and software, NFL FLAG, NFL PLAY 60 App and Virtual Experiences, and Fuel Up to Play 60. Administer the FitnessGram assessment two times per year (fall pre-test and spring post-test) and enter scores into the FitnessGram software. Complete an Initiation (one-time) and End-of-School-Year (annually) survey. Utilize The Cooper Institute Online Resources (ActivityLog, FitnessGram Physical Activity Tracker App, Online Learning Modules, and Get 60: Fit 4 FitnessGram Video) and NFL PLAY 60 initiatives provided through the project (NFL FLAG kit, NFL PLAY 60 App and Virtual Experiences, and Fuel Up to Play 60).
Data collected through the FitnessGram assessment and project surveys will be used to examine the impact of Play 60 Programs on student health and fitness levels.

Fuel Up to Play 60 is an in-school nutrition and physical activity program launched by National Football League (NFL) and National Dairy Council (NDC), founded by America’s dairy farmers, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The program encourages youth to consume nutrient-rich foods (low-fat and fat-free dairy, fruits, vegetables and whole grains) and achieve at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Fuel Up to Play 60 is designed to engage and empower youth to take action for their own health by implementing long-term, positive changes for themselves and their schools. Customizable and non-prescriptive program components are grounded in research, including tools and resources, in-school promotional materials, a website and student contests. www.FuelUptoPlay60.com
→ NFL Foundation The NFL Foundation’s mission is to support health, safety and wellness of athletes, youth football and the communities which support their game. Through the NFL’s work with American Heart Association, National Dairy Council, and The Cooper Institute, The NFL Foundation supports the NFL PLAY 60 Campaign to encourage kids to be active for at least 60 minutes every day. Initiatives such as The NFL PLAY 60 App and Virtual Experiences, Fuel up to Play60, and The NFL Play60 FitnessGram program are integral parts of Play60, and promote activity and healthy environments for children in their schools and homes. www.NflFoundation.org

FITNESSGRAM TESTING INITIATION SURVEY Upon acceptance to the NFL Play 60 FitnessGram Project, you will be asked to fill out a comprehensive survey that provides important background information on your school/site. The Initiation survey provides an important look into your school’s environment including demographics, current physical education programming and polices, recess, current level of participation in fitness assessment and NFL PLAY 60 programming, nutrition and more. The Initiation survey is a participation requirement, but it’s easy to fill out and completely online. At the end of the Initiation Survey, each school will complete the Fuel Up to Play 60 Play-in-a-Box application.
FITNESSGRAM TESTING After acceptance and completion of the Initiation survey, it’s time to start planning for your FitnessGram assessment. FitnessGram serves as the foundation for the NFL PLAY 60 FitnessGram Project – without data from FitnessGram, it’s impossible to know if what we’re doing is in fact working. At the end of the day, our goal is to help students build healthy habits that last a lifetime. When you plan your yearly timeline, make sure to include time to practice with your students, so when it does come time to assess with FitnessGram, they’ll be prepared.

GAMEPLAN NFL PLAY 60 INITIATIVES
The primary programs focus on fun ways to get students up and active, as well as building healthy, sustainable habits that focus on regular physical activity and good nutrition. These programs help empower students to track their own activity, develop leadership skills within their school, become voices for positive, healthy change, and more. Physical activity is simply a grown-up word for “play”, and it’s definitely time to put “play” back in the day! → Fuel Up to Play 60 In partnership with the NFL and National Dairy Council, Fuel Up to Play 60 is an in-school program aimed at empowering students to lead health and wellness changes in their schools through improved nutrition and physical activity. Schools are provided a “Playbook” of simple action strategies to incorporate into the school environment including: Breakfast for Everyone, Farm to School: Know Your Foods, In-Class Physical Activity Breaks and Recess Refresh. Grant funding is available to schools to implement these Plays that are based on best practices which encourage student leadership.
→ NFL FLAG In 2014, the NFL and GENYOUth developed a turnkey solution to the crisis in physical inactivity by supporting America’s physical education (PE) teachers and providing students with the foundation and resources for lifelong physical activity. The NFL FLAG-In-Schools Kit is a package provided directly to schools and offers FLAG football resources schools need to uplift and support a school’s physical education program. The program is implemented in over 16,000 school communities across the country, reaching 9.1 million students. NFL FLAG-In-Schools provides children ages 5-17 the opportunity to get physically active by participating in non-contact FLAG football. The program allows students to learn the fundamentals of football and teamwork. Participating sites will receive an NFL FLAG Kit that includes footballs, FLAGs, curriculum, posters and recognition certificates for students.
10
→ NFL PLAY 60 Virtual Experiences A partnership program by the American Heart Association and National Football League, along with Discovery Education, NFL PLAY 60 virtual experiences immerse students in a series of dynamic videos that offer an exclusive behind the scenes pass to exciting state of the art locations that encourage physical activity and help kids learn about heart health and the importance of physical activity. Standards-aligned companion activities encourage deeper student exploration key themes in school and at home.
→ NFL Play 60 App Also by the American Heart Association, the NFL PLAY 60 App leverages technology to facilitate physical activity. It can be used in schools as breaks between lessons and as part of physical activity stations. It is also a great option to promote physical activity at home.

GAMEPLAN STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS
To ensure success: plan ahead, understand FitnessGram, get to know your market Champion, and engage administrators.
→ Market Champion One of the critical keys to program success is the NFL Play 60 FitnessGram Project Champion. Each market has a designated champion that helps support outreach and implementation. The Champion’s role is to mentor participating teachers, communicate best practices, share newsletters and important information, work with sites to increase engagement, be a resource to market club contacts, and help maximize overall market success. Your Champion is an invaluable resource. Whether you have a question about FitnessGram, implementation or just need some help, your Champion is your go-to person.
For information on your market champion, or to contact, email NFLPlay60FG@cooperinst.org.
→ Administrative Coach As a teacher, garnering administration support can sometimes be challenging, but your district leadership wants to know about the great work you’re doing. It’s important to give your administrators the opportunity to learn about the program and to become your biggest cheerleader. Set aside some time to meet with leadership within your district, which could be your principal, a district health coordinator, all the way to your superintendent. Schools play an essential role in helping raise a healthier generation, and district administrators understand and what to be a part of positive initiatives that truly transform the lives of their students.

GAMEPLAN THE COOPER INSTITUTE ONLINE RESOURCES Fitness is critical to a student’s growth and development. Whether in a physical education class or at home, students need at least 60 minutes of daily physical activity to optimal health and academic performance. → ActivityLog If you have access to the FitnessGram software and plan to share login credentials with students, we recommend using ActivityLog. Quick to access and set up, using ActivityLog keeps your data all in one place and stores it for years to come. ActivityLog provides students with an opportunity to record their own steps, minutes of activity, and average heart rate within the FitnessGram® software. Students log their activity daily and are provided with a personalized and detailed report indicating if they met the goal for that day. Teachers can also set up challenges for students to work toward various goals. Teachers should track students’ physical activity for a minimum of one week per semester.
For more information on ActivityLog visit this link.
→ FitnessGram Physical Activity Tracker App If you do not have access to the FitnessGram software this year or do not plan to share login credentials with your students, we recommend using the FitnessGram Physical Activity Tracker. The FitnessGram Physical Activity Tracker application is free and only takes moments for a student to download to their personal device from the app store. From there, the user will simply need to open their app and start logging steps, minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, and add specific activities performed. Teachers should track students’ physical activity for a minimum of one week per semester.

GAMEPLAN FITNESSGRAM FitnessGram assesses healthrelated components of fitness of more than 10 million students across the country in over 20,000 schools.
Watch Video > Academic tests are administered routinely in the classroom, and assessing students’ fitness levels is just as important as testing on reading, math, science and history. In fact, research shows that students who are fit perform better on standardized math and reading tests. FitnessGram is much more than an assessment; it is a critical component to a quality physical education program. Assessing health-related fitness can help children develop health habits that will last a lifetime. Backed by decades of science and guided by The Cooper Institute’s FitnessGram Advisory Board, FitnessGram is an invaluable resource that allows teachers and administrators to track trends and identify areas of need to enhance physical education programs and curriculum. → NFL PLAY 60 Virtual Experiences The AHA and NFL will continue to partner with Discovery Education to develop digital tools that can be leveraged in schools and at home. We are currently planning a Virtual Experiences for the school year. Be on the lookout for more information! A Virtual Experiences is an open-access virtual production, accessible at no-cost to schools and communities worldwide. It transports students beyond the walls of the classroom to somewhere they may never get a chance to visit in person. We have three existing Virtual Experiences on our website that transport students to Super Bowl LII in Atlanta, Super Bowl LI in Houston, TX as well as the Minnesota Vikings practice facility. These experiences encourage physical activity and help kids to learn about heart health and the importance of physical activity. Teachers can show the Virtual Experiences during class to help kids learn about important health-related concepts while engaging in physical activity. There are also extension activities on the website that help to link the Virtual Experiences to other subjects like math and science. Get your students moving today! aha-nflplay60.discoveryeducation.com/virtual-experiences
→ NFL PLAY 60 App The NFL PLAY 60 app was created in partnership with the NFL and launched in 2014. Through gaming technology, we created a dynamic, interactive experience that transformed screen time from a sedentary experience to an active one. In September 2017, we launched a new version of NFL PLAY 60 app that includes search and collectability features in a physical activity-based augmented reality game. Users collect a variety of football players, play minigames to strengthen their players, and compete in a football themed strategy game using their collected players. Look out for a new version of the NFL PLAY 60 app in January 2019 that will continue to engage, inspire and challenge kids to get their 60 minutes of physical activity each day. Teachers may choose to use the NFL PLAY 60 App to facilitate a physical activity break between lessons, incorporate it in a physical activity station, and promote it to students as a fun way to be physically active at home.

Comparison of Screening Methods for Evaluating School-Level Fitness Patterns with FITNESSGRAM: Findings from the NFL PLAY 60 FITNESSGRAM Partnership (Saint-Maurice et al., 2014). The widespread adoption of FITNESSGRAM (both in the U.S. and internationally) opens up exciting opportunities to study age and gender patterns among youth. This paper explores the many complex issues that must be considered when using field based tests for research. 3. Prevalence of youth fitness in U.S.: Baseline results from the NFL PLAY 60 FITNESSGRAM project (Saint-Maurice et al., 2015 Assessments of physical fitness are a common component of most physical education programs, but there is little information about the current status of physical fitness in youth. This paper provides key insights about the current state of youth fitness in a large sample of schools participating in the NFL Play 60 FitnessGram Project. 4. Explaining Disparities in Youth Aerobic Fitness and Body Mass Index: Relative Impact of Socioeconomic and Minority Status (Bai et al., 2016). In order to develop the most effective project implementation strategy, this paper examined the relationship between demographics (e.g. socioeconomic status, minority rate, enrollment, and location) and youth fitness. 5. The longitudinal impact of NFL PLAY 60 Programming on elementary school children’s body mass index and aerobic capacity (Saint-Maurice et al., 2017). The paper examined the fitness achievement rates among elementary schools that indicated participating in any of the NFL PLAY 60 initiatives program versus those that did not. 6. The Longitudinal Impact of NFL PLAY 60 Programming on Youth Aerobic Capacity and BMI (Bai et al., 2017). Youth fitness trends were examined over a four year period between schools that utilized PLAY 60 initiatives versus the ones that did not. The paper found that programming schools had better cardiorespiratory fitness and BMI results compared to schools that did not use the NFL PLAY 60 programs. Additionally, the longer the schools participated the better their health-related fitness. 7. Evaluation of youth enjoyment toward physical activity and sedentary behavior (Bai et al., 2018). While physical activity (PA) and sedentary behaviors (SB) are independent, past findings suggest that they may be influenced by common underlying factors. To clarify this issue, the paper examined associations between enjoyment of PA and participation in both PA and SB of youth. It was determined that youth reporting higher enjoyment levels tended to have higher physical activity and lower sedentary behavior levels. 8. Self-Regulations for Educators Questionnaire (SREQ) for implementation programming: Measurement development and validation (Bai et al., 2020). The research focused on developing a new tool to assess teacher motivation. Additionally, the paper found that the greater the intrinsic motivation of the teacher, the more likely they were to engage in the overall project and to use the fitness testing to improve their teaching. The results provided novel insights about factors influencing teacher’s motivations for using evidence-based programs (i.e. NFL PLAY 60 FitnessGram Project) and the tool can be readily deployed in future studies to capture this influence.
