60. Cork Film Festival

WELCOME

It is a special honour to present this programme as the Festival reaches its 60th Edition. It is a vast, packed, panoramic line up of films and events, giving you the opportunity to visit every corner of the globe, from the comforts of Cork’s fine cinemas. Some innovations include a new competition for feature documentaries; expanding our Ideas programme beyond Illuminate (which is back) to consider issues such as assisted dying, abortion, and the refugee crisis; and collaborating with the Festival’s new Principal Partner RTÉ to present the Gala of our David Lean Classics at the Opera House: Brief Encounter with Live Score by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. On behalf of my terrific staff - whom I thank from the bottom of my heart - I welcome you to your Cork Film Festival, proudly 60, and still dancing.

James Mullighan, Creative Director, Cork Film Festival

Welcome to the 2015 Cork Film Festival. Our 60th Edition programme is packed with stimulating, entertaining and engaging cinematic delights from Ireland and around the world. Presenting this programme would not be possible without the support of the Arts Council Ireland, our Principal Funder, the Arts Office of the Cork City Council, Fáilte Ireland, Culture Ireland, and the Irish Examiner. The Board is delighted that our National Broadcaster has joined these ranks as a Principal Partner - read more about that on p.10. We welcome back the Irish Film Board and Irish Film Institute, and appreciate the growth of the partnerships with the National Sculpture Factory, UCC, St Johns, and CIT. Thank you to our core and seasonal staff and to my Board colleagues. My gratitude extends to you, the festival-goer, for your enthusiasm and support which drives us as we celebrate the Jubilee of the Cork Film Festival.

Denis McSweeney Chairman of the Board

I am delighted to welcome this milestone Cork Film Festival celebrating its 60th edition, the longest running film festival in the country. We have a great tradition for film in Cork City where each year audiences from home and abroad flock to this city to see an array of international, national and local films. The festival has always been an important platform for local and national talent and we are delighted to see it become an official festival for submission for shorts for the Oscars creating very exciting potential for local filmmakers in this iconic international arena. We need as a city to continue to support the arts to ensure that organisations and individuals have the opportunity to make work, can connect with our international partners and continue Cork’s tradition of looking outwards and welcoming new ideas and people, new culture and art to our city. I congratulate the festival on its exciting and diverse programme this year which has something for all tastes and interests and wish you all a wonderful Cork Film Festival.

Chris O’Leary Ardmhéara Chorcaí, Lord Mayor of Cork

SPECIAL EVENT

A genre defying ‘catastrophic’ thriller from one of the great living masters of cinema.

Opening Gala GALA

11 MINUTES / 11 MINUT Jerzy Skolimowski | Poland, Ireland | 81mins | Subtitled FRI 6 | 2000 | CORK OPERA HOUSE

The same 11 minute period in the lives of several different characters is revisited over and over, by the great Polish iconoclast. A sleezy Hollywood director auditions an actress. A jealous husband is out of control. An elderly man calmly sketches a bridge. A high-rise window cleaner takes an illicit break. A team of paramedics rush a pregnant woman to hospital. An ex-con serves hot dogs to hungry nuns, whilst a dog does what dogs do do (but we see this from the dog’s point of view). It is a world full of unsurety - perhaps the only surety is that anything might happen at any time. The ever adventurous Skolimowski (Moonlighting,

the Shout, Essential Killing) turns his singular style to extracting as much tension, exhilaration, emotion and motion from that revisted brief time frame. As is often Skolimowski’s way, the striking sound design is at the fore, and Mikolaj Lebkowski’s cinematography provides many surprises and delights. A Polish co-production with Ireland’s Element Pictures (and heartfelt thanks to them), the film’s strong largely Polish cast also includes Good Vibrations star Richard Dorner. This thrilling and breathless ride will open the 60th Cork Film Festival in exhilarating style. With thanks to Element Pictures Distribution.

GALA

CAROL Todd Haynes | USA | UK | 2015 | 118mins SUN 15 | 2000 | CORK OPERA HOUSE

Set in 1950s New York, two women from very different backgrounds find themselves in the throes of love in Carol. As conventional norms of the time challenge their undeniable attraction, an honest story emerges to reveal the resilience of the heart in the face of change. A young woman in her 20s, Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara), is a clerk working in a Manhattan department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol (Cate Blanchett), an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage. As an immediate connection sparks between them, the innocence of their first encounter dims and their connection deepens.

While Carol breaks free from the confines of marriage, her husband (Kyle Chandler) threatens her competence as a mother when Carol’s involvement with Therese and close relationship with her best friend Abby (Sarah Paulson) comes to light. As Carol leaves the comfort of home to travel with Therese, an internal journey of selfdiscovery coincides with her new sense of space. Directed by Todd Haynes and written by Phyllis Nagy, Carol beautifully speaks to the transforming nature of characters within the road movie genre. In an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s seminal novel The Price of Salt, and with moving performances from a stellar cast. Carol reminds audiences that desire is often expressed in the absence of personal joy. With thanks to STUDIOCANAL

SPECIAL EVENT

Irish Gala

IRISH GALA

STRANGERLAND Kim Farrant | Australia | Ireland | 2015 | 112mins SAT 14 | 2045 | CORK OPERA HOUSE

New to the remote Australian desert town of Nathgari, the Parker family is thrown into crisis when Catherine and Matthew discover that their two teenage kids, Tommy and Lily, have mysteriously disappeared just before a massive dust storm hits the town. With Nathgari now eerily smothered in red dust and darkness, the locals join the search led by local cop David Rae. With temperatures rising, and the chances of survival plummeting with each passing day, Catherine and Matthew find themselves pushed to the brink as they struggle to survive the uncertainty of their children’s fate.

Emboldened by an incredibly strong cast - including Joseph Fiennes, Hugo Weaving and an on-form Nicole Kidman - Stangerland is a wonderfully crafted piece of filmmaking from Australian Kim Farrant after a script co-written by Ireland’s Michael Kinirons, and magnificent cinematography by Kerry-born P.J. Dillon, and produced by Fastnet Film’s Macdara Kelleher. It is a gripping story told with confidence, panache and no little aplomb. With thanks to Wildcard Distribution

The Cork Film Festival 60th Edition Irish Premiere Gala

An all-star cast, including Michael Fassbender, Kate Winslet, Jeff Daniels and Seth Rogen, brings to dazzling life this fizzing biopic of the visionary who revolutionised the way we communicate.

IRISH PREMIER

STEVE JOBS Danny Boyle | USA | 2015 | 122mins SUN 8 | 2030 | CORK OPERA HOUSE

The Cork Film Festival is honoured to have this hugely anticipated movie as the Irish Premiere Gala for its 60th Edition, and delighted to play it on the giant screen at the Cork Opera House. The film’s pedigree is extraordinary: not just that amazing cast, but also director Danny Boyle (an Oscar® for Slumdog Millionaire) helming the film from Aaron Sorkin’s (an Oscar® for The Social Network) adaptation of Walter Isaacson’s best-selling biography Steve Jobs. It is a film in three acts, running over 14 years, with each act based around the lead up to and launch of an iconic Jobs’s product: the Macintosh in 1984, the NeXT Cube in 1988

and the iMac in 1988. Through these, this structure delivers a detailed, nuanced portrait of Jobs’s life, and reminds us how these mass marketed products have changed the way we work, live and communicate. With heartfelt thanks to David Burke and all at Universal for granting the Irish premiere of the film to Cork, home to Apple’s European headquarters. “Fassbender is enthralling. It’s impossible to take your eyes off him”. Variety

David Lean’s black and white cinematic masterpiece is often voted the most romantic film of all time. In this special presentation, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra performs the score live on stage, creating the David Lean Classics at the Opera House Gala, with thanks to RTÉ.

‘There was not a dry eye in the house, not least because of the eye-watering beauty of having the score freshly created in front of us as the movie rolled.’ Classical Music Magazine

This is the story of the chance meeting of a married doctor and a suburban housewife on a train platform, which leads swiftly to an emotional love affair, with unexpected consequences. The film brought to fame Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with its lush emotional landscape.

MUSIC GALA

WHAT’S GOING ON: TASTE LIVE AT THE ISLE OF WIGHT FESTIVAL 1970 Murray Lerner | 1971 | 82mins WED 11 | 1930 | CORK OPERA HOUSE

The third and final Isle of Wight festival, August 26-31 1970, was the largest musical event at that time, attracting over 600,000 music fans. Present was Oscar®-winning documentary filmmaker Murray Lerner (1981 Oscar® for From Mao to Mozart: Isaac Stern in China). All rock royalty performed there that week, and over the years Lerner has dipped into his vast archive to release feature-length records of performances by Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Miles Davis and Leonard Cohen.

Crucially on the bill was Taste, the blues-rock trio formed in Cork in 1966 by Rory Gallagher. Lerner had only intended to shoot two numbers by the band, saving his precious film stock for more ‘high profile’ artists, but immediately recognising that he was witnessing something special he kept the cameras rolling for over an hour. It was the outfit’s last gig, but if the cracks were already forming within the band they never showed to the multitudes who were present to witness one of the most underappreciated bands of the era at the peak of their powers. A mere 22-years-old at the time, Gallagher tears into such classics as What’s Going On and Sinner Boy with abandon. Before the gig, the film explores the importance of Rory Gallagher on Irish and world music, with contributions from Bob Geldof, the Edge, Brian May, director Lerner himself, and many more. The 16mm film has been restored to Hi-Definition and the sound remixed at 5.1 for this 2015 version.

Spirit of the Festival Award

Documentary is a rapidly evolving genre, with aesthetic and cinematic qualities emerging as a priority in a new generation of filmmakers who are abandoning voiceover, talking heads and archive footage to embrace a new mode of storytelling. This Award celebrates documentary as an international art form, highlighting the unique beauty, horror and visceral impact that true events have to offer.

The initiation last year of the Gradam Spiorad na Féile / Spirit of the Festival Award was an exciting one. As long-time champions of a broad range of cinematic approaches it behoved us to honour those new, fresh talents, distinctive voices and bold approaches. This year we present five more we expect will surprise and delight.

60. Cork Film Festival

Illuminate mental health in film Illuminate is Cork Film Festival’s Series of carefully curated film and discussion events, which focus on different aspects of mental health.

20

Mental health is a universal issue - one in three of us will be touched by it at some point in our lives. Film has a unique position as a vehicle for discussion, and Illuminate creates an open forum where experts and audience members alike come together and share their knowledge and experiences. In an age where mental health issues are becoming increasingly de-stigmatised, discussed and understood in our society and our media, Illuminate uses the platform of film to tackle themes of medicalisation, representations of mental health in film and media, society’s attitude and responsibility toward those suffering with mental health issues and many more. This film and discussion series each time starts with a feature length film, and then breaks out into extended audience interactive discussion sessions, with clinicians, commentators, policymakers, ethicists and philosophers interviewing and rejoining with the filmmakers.

SPECIAL EVENT

DEAD WHEN I GOT HERE THU 12 | 1800-2030 | TRISKEL CHRISTCHURCH

Dir.: Mark Aitken

A film about a man finding purpose for his life in the most unlikely place after years of self-destruction. Josué was cast out of the traumatised streets of Juárez, México into the desert and dumped in a mental asylum run by its own patients. Assisted by people employing empathy as the only means of survival, Josué transcended near death - discovering compassion in his darkest hours. Six years later, Josué manages the asylum and dreams of his estranged daughter. This is a story about sorrow and hardship but also about healing and redemption. The post screening panel discussion will explore the problem of homelessness and mental health in Ireland, and the issue of social responsibility to those suffering from mental health issues. Speakers: Mark Aitken (Director), Richard Walden (Scottish Mental Health Film Festival), Joan Hamilton (Slí Eile) and more TBA.

GOOD GIRL FRI 13 | 1600-1930 | TRISKEL CHRISTCHURCH

Dir.: Solveig Melkeraaen

Good Girl is Norwegian director Solveig Melkeraaen’s brave autobiographical documentary about her journey through acute depression. It is a film about weight: the weight Solveig feels to be the ‘Good Girl’; the weight of her depression; its weight upon her loved ones and the weight of her decision to undergo ECT treatment. Melkeraaen turns the camera on herself in a search for truth and understanding. During the film Solveig is again hit by depression and we take the journey through illness, vulnerability and treatment with her. An unflinchingly honest film which explores depression, ECT and the light and hope of recovery with bravery and humour. The post screening panel discussion will focus on depression and its impact upon individuals and families, ECT and recovery.

HEDI SCHNEIDER IS STUCK SAT 14 | 1330-1600 | TRISKEL CHRISTCHURCH

Dir.: Sonja Heiss

Hedi’s life is seemingly perfect, a loving husband, a beautiful son and an adventure on the horizon. However, one day Hedi suffers a debilitating panic attack and the happy balance of all their lives become threatened and fragile. Hedi’s battle with illness and her dependency on medication set the family in stasis. The film is the story of a family set back by a problem that could interrupt any of our lives. Sonja Heiss’ triumph in her treatment of depression is the refreshing balance of tragedy and wry comedy the film achieves. The light touch and gentle tone of Hedi Schneider is Stuck rather than undermine the seriousness of the issues dealt with only make us realize the universal, human nature of them. The post screening panel discussion will explore issues of anxiety, medicalisation, stigma and representations of mental health in film and media. Speakers: Dr. Peter Byrne (University College London), Ann O’ Connor (Arts+Minds) and more TBA. 21

SPECIAL EVENT

Orson Welles To mark the centenary of Orson Welles’ birth, we present a selection of his finest achievements as a director. His debut Citizen Kane is rightly regarded as one of the greatest films of all time. Although he managed to make some exceptional films in Hollywood (such as The Lady From Shanghai), the maverick Welles had to struggle for creative freedom within the studio system. Consequently, he made several independent features in Europe such as an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello and F For Fake, his exhilarating and marvellously idiosyncratic final feature.

01. Citizen Kane Considered by many to be Welles’ masterwork, Citizen Kane remains grand cinematic entertainment, sharply acted and directed with inspired visual flair. See p64

02. The Lady From Shanghai Michael O’Hara is an innocent man lured into a dangerous web of intrigue featuring baffling murders, multiple plot twists and remarkable camera work. See p92

03. Othello Winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1952, this is Welles’ dynamic version of Shakespeare’s tragedy with the director taking on the title role himself. See p100

04. F For Fake Fiction, documentary, and the poetic essay interlock, fragment, and recombine to form one of the most entertaining and profound works in all of cinema. See p86

\\OUT OF BODY// WITH SUPPORTING SHORT FILMS. SAT 7 | 2130 | TRISKEL CHRISTCHURCH

€15

Puberty, mental health, and shifting states of consciousness play out through animated encounters with phobia, fever dreamscapes and biological facts about the body. Constructed from organic elements including animal flesh and organs, hair, coal, milk, and raw dough, Carla MacKinnon’s animation indulges a fascination for anatomy, using it as the central nervous system to explore the uncanny, morbid and sometimes beautiful physical experience of being-in-a-body (as well as outside of one). Gazelle Twin is the creation of British composer, producer and artist, Elizabeth Bernholz. Her live performance personas and musical work have gathered critical acclaim internationally since her first full length release in July 2011. Most recently she completed and released the album UNFLESH, a highly visual and challenging piece of ‘horror pop’ exploring body centric themes such as puberty and phobia, and named as the best album release of 2014 by The Quietus. gazelletwin.com Carla MacKinnon graduated from Royal College of Art’s Animation Programme in 2013. Her video work combines live action and animation to create seductive and unsettling environments. mackinnonworks.com PLEASE NOTE: THIS FILM CONTAINS GRAPHIC IMAGERY OF ANIMAL TISSUE, BLOOD AND ORGANS

AN GLÉACHT FRI 13 | 2100 | TRISKEL CHRISTCHURCH

Outsider artist Caoimhín Breathnach (1934-2009) lived as a recluse in Knockvicar, Co. Roscommon for all of his life. Breathnach’s artistic practice focussed on the creation of ‘subliminal’ tapes and films which he believed possessed the capacity to shift consciousness. In these works, Ogham magickal scales, crystallography, astronomy, folklore & natural phenomena are combined with found audio and visual material to produce an idiosyncratic, esoteric system of correspondences. Breathnach spent the last years of his life planning a work called An Gléacht. The work was to combine subliminal tapes and films with filmed footage showing a sequence of occult rituals. For this year’s Cork Film Festival, Breathnach’s great-niece, the composer and artist Jennifer Walshe, has completed An Gléacht which will be screened accompanied by live musicians. WORLD DESTRUCTION? A YOUNG LOVERS’ GUIDE ... FRI 13 | 2300 THEATRE DEVELOPMENT CENTRE, TRISKEL

€10

Cork Film Festival in association with Tombstome are delighted to welcome back Robert Curgenven with his latest performance A Young Lovers’ Guide to Speculative Pataphysics. Consisting of multiple turntables, dub plates and acetates alongside roomshaking low frequency oscillators all power a tailored lighting and projection system that will re-route your senses in an immersive, physical and synesthetic audiovisual performance. Joining him on the night is Campbell Kneale, with his performance Our Love Will Destroy The World. Campbell has been on the radar of those with an ear for sensational sound for the best part of 20 years thanks to his elevated solo projects Birchville Cat Motel, Black Boned Angel, and currently, Our Love Will Destroy The World. What began then as a blurring and erasing of the distinction lines between noise and music has transformed into a reality-destroying, gnosis inducing, act that arguably bares more resemblance to ‘magic’ than to ‘music’. Monolithic tones and drones lay the structural centering for a great ‘reaching’ out into the aether in withering sound and light … a committed and compelling blasphemy of brutal ‘soul’ music in its truest sense. More is more, everything up to 11, storming the citadels of enlightenment with an army of living, breathing decibels.

Exploring new innovations in film and digital

BRANDED CINEMA, with Brian Newman

Digital continues to revolutionise how we direct, produce and consume film; the potential for new modes of audience engagement, development and interaction are endless and the proliferation of new techniques in interactive and digital storytelling has opened up a host of alternative career-paths for young creatives in film, digital, animation and design. This event - part-show, part-conference - is a panoptic look at this rapidly changing world of digital creativity. In a day packed with presentations, exhibition and case-studies of the most dynamic digital, interactive and crossplatform work today Interactive@ Cork equips its participants with new skillsets for this rapidly changing landscape.

Branded Cinema is on the rise. More and more filmmakers and creatives are being supported in their practice by brands, with major brands producing and backing short, feature and documentary work. This new phenomenon expands far beyond product placement, with brands realising that often the best and most potent way to amplify their message is to attach itself lock-stock to a film’s message. In this truly unique event, the Cork Film Festival is delighted to welcome back Brian Newman, one of the world’s leading media and distribution consultants. Brian will present a keynote presentation on this new and rapidly evolving phenomenon elucidating the huge marketing potential for filmmakers to learn invaluable marketing strategies from this approach even if not working directly with a brand and teaching filmmakers invaluable tools on how to amplify and market their film’s core message. This unique keynote will be followed by a live intensive workshop where four preselected film teams will pitch their projects to Brian and receive strategic project advice and mentoring on this important and increasingly ubiquitous financing model.

Speakers will include: Glenn Mulcahy [RTÉ], Adipat Virdi (Storyworld architect), Brendan Canty (director, Hozier’s Take Me to Church), and many more TBA. Thanks to Mark Atkin of Crossover Labs for consulting on and hosting this event.

So you’ve made a film. Well done! Now what? IN ASSOCIATION WITH SCREEN TRAINING IRELAND Following the success of last year’s INCUBATE, the Cork Film Festival will again present its allday film industry professional development toolkit event. In 2015, the Festival will host some leading industry members from international festivals, film marketing strategists, sales agents and global distributors to share their knowledge and expertise. Aimed at emerging independent professionals - shorts to feature producers and directors, or first to second features - this rich event equips emerging talents with skills and knowledge about the workings of the film industry, enabling them to get their work out there and to find their place in the international film business. Sessions Include: the Festivals Panel; How to Market your work; the Sales and Distribution Panel; a focus on Career Sustainability; Working with brands and agencies Case Study; Producers case study; Audience Development with Brian Newman; and more. Speakers Include: New Horizons Film Festival, Sheffield DocFest, Shooting People, DocHeads, Screen Producers Ireland, Wildcard Distribution, Element Pictures, New Europe Film Sales, Metrodome Distribution, Conor Barry (Producer), and many more TBA.

Music Film Ideas Sun 8 – Tue 11 Triskel Christchurch

Movies, of course, should always entertain. But culture’s most accessible and widely disseminated medium is also the most potent form with which we examine, interrogate and find inspiration from the world around us. Film can highlight the elements of our society of which we are most proud or inspire us to debate and change the issues that move us all. Since the Lumiere Brothers Workers Leaving the Factory’(1895), film has been uniquely poised as the prism through which we explore and interrogate our society. Be it malevolent like The Triumph of the Will (1935), or benevolent like Philadelphia (1993) or An Inconvenient Truth (2006), cinema has always been a powerful force in our society. For our 60th Edition, the Festival proudly offers a showcase of films that enable us to question, debate and understand some of the burning social issues of our time. Each of these films will be followed by extensive panel discussions involving commentators, experts, filmmakers and you, the audience.

34

treats the issues raised by the film with dignity, never over-simplifying them in this honest examination of end-of-life decisions. The postscreening discussion will feature some of Ireland’s leading voices on this divisive and complex issue.

FILMS

The first of these films is I Can’t, I Can’t ... (p54) presented in association with the Irish Film Institute. The film was almost banned from the Cork Film Festival when it first screened in 1969 due to its exploration of notions of sexuality in Irish society. It is timely to present it again in 2015, enabling us to reexamine these notions and contemplate how they affect us now, in our psychology, in our culture and indeed in our legislation surrounding abortion. The post screening discussion will examine how these issues are still relevant today and the implications of this movie’s social commentary for the debate that rages today around The Irish Constitution’s 8th Amendment. The second presentation is In Your Arms (p59), a powerful feature drama which tackles the complex issue of assisted dying, one of the most morally complex questions that contemporary society faces. This fearless and entertaining drama tackles this issue with compassion, grace and without judgment. Director Samanou Acheche Sahlstrom

The last of these presentations is Those Who Feel the Fire Burning (p65) by Morgan Kibbe. This visually near-overwhelming essayistic documentary is a story silently told of the hopeless existence of refugees on the borders of Europe - of those who are at the centre of one of the worst humanitarian crises in recent human memory. The wandering ghost of this film, who is its subjective eye, bears witness to the unbearable suffering of these refugees and the loss and trauma of statelessness. All post screening discussions will see journalists, commentators, academics and those close to the issues debating the ideas, possibilities and morality surrounding these topics.

Mac beth SCHOOLS AND PUBLIC PRESENTATION

MACBETH Justin Kurzel | UK | 2015 | 103mins THURSDAY 11 | 1200 | CORK OPERA HOUSE

Long before the curtains were raised for this year’s Cannes film festival, the performance by Michael Fassbender in the title role of Macbeth had been spoken of as a possible Oscar contender. Those expectations were given weight with the film’s screening. Fassbender excels as the murderous thane, bringing a singular intensity to Macbeth’s fateful trajectory from loyal lord to paranoid despot. Kurzel’s Macbeth is as visceral, bruising and elemental as the majestically framed and awe-inspiring landscape it’s set against. This heady mix of dark supernatural forces, magnificent scenery and towering performances is leant further Sturm und Drang by Jed Kurzel’s brooding score. Composer Jed Kurzel will be present for the screening.

FEATURE

THE SMELL OF US Larry Clark | France | 2014 | 87mins 2345 | TRISKEL CHRISTCHURCH

Larry Clark’s controversial 1995 debut Kids painted a scandalous portrait of that era’s youth. Two decades later he is back with the same idea, but this time the kids are from Paris, not New York. Clark appears on screen like an obsolete relic of a bygone era trying to make sense of the modern world of smartphones, social media, and YouTube. At the same time, he aims to immortalise whatever might be considered outré today; the result is a genuinely shocking, often gruesome film, as one would expect from a filmmaker famed for skating close to pornography’s edge.

For many, Peter Anton’s house embodies an end-of-life nightmare: the utility companies long ago shut off the heat and electricity, the floorboards are rotting, and the detritus of a chaotic life is precariously stacked to the ceiling. But for filmmakers Dan Rybicky and Aaron Wickenden, Anton’s home is a treasure trove, a startling collection of unseen and fascinating paintings, drawings, and notebooks, not to mention Anton himself, a character worthy of his own reality show. Though aging, infirm, cranky, and solitary, Anton also is funny and utterly resilient. The film’s remarkable journey follows a gifted artist through startling twists and turns.

UNDER MILK WOOD Kevin Allen | UK | 2015 | 88mins 1400 | TRISKEL CHRISTCHURCH

Rhys Ifans returns to his South Wales roots with this lusty cinematic remake of the celebrated radio ‘play for voices’ by legendary Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. This beautiful adaptation of Thomas’ iconic classic, stars Ifans and Charlotte Church. Very different indeed to the 1972 version, brimming wih Richard Burton gravitas, Allen’s (often very) erotic, surreal cinematic approach explores some of the more visceral elements of the funny, magical dreamscape of Thomas’ seaside village Llareggub (buggerall backwards). The film is lush and enthralling, with the lyricism of the language matched by rich, dreamlike imagery.

SUNSET SONG Terence Davies | UK | Luxembourg | 2015 | 135mins 1515 | CORK OPERA HOUSE

This visually superb adaptation of Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s 1932 classic novel is exquisitely shot: each scene looks like an Old Masters painting as Davies applies his distinct ‘memory realism’ style to a twentieth-century northern British milieu that many will recognize from the writer-director’s previous films. Scratching a livelihood out of the stunning but harsh terrain, the Guthrie family cowers in obedient fear of its brooding patriarch (Peter Mullan). As Guthrie’s long-suffering wife retreats into silence, the film’s attention shifts to his beautiful and intelligent daughter Chris (Agyness Deyn), divided between her hatred for the coarse villagers and her love of the landscape. Chris dreams, of freedom and escape. Davies depicts the growth of relationships, the aura of unexpected bliss, with incomparable sensitivity. - TIFF

A YOUNG PATRIOT Haibin Du | China | USA | France | 2015 | 96mins | Subtitled 1600 | GATE

Intimate and sweeping in equal measure, Du Haibin’s five year coming-of-age chronicle offers a gripping insight into modern China and the universal minefield of youth. Supported by stunning cinematography, the relationship between patriotism, exploitation and propaganda is evident in spades. Most compelling however is the steady destruction of idealism, as Zhao Chantong leaves home, falls in love, and is exposed to the realities of the country he was so devoted to.

Brutal, over-crowded and violent: that is the reputation of South America’s prisons. And with good reason. “When I came here I was shaking”, one prisoner admitted. “All anyone knew about the place were the massacres. There were people who’d cut your head off without fear. It was the law of the jungle. As soon as you entered you were told: see nothing, hear nothing, say nothing”. But change is coming to El Salvador’s prisons. Slowly. How? Yo Cambio. I change. Those familiar with Radu Jude’s award-laden debut short The Tube with the Hat (CFF 2007) will recall his facility for rich and often expletive-ridden colloquial dialogue, brusque behaviour, ribald humour and gift for a memorable aphorism. THE CLUB / EL CLUB Pablo Larraín | Chile | 2015 | 97’ | Subtitled 2145 | GATE

A group of exiled priests find their clandestine existence rudely interrupted in Pablo Larraín’s stunning allegory for the abuses of the Catholic Church. Pablo Larraín won Berlin’s Grand Jury Prize with this mordant morality tale set in a sleepy Chilean coastal town. Sharing both a large home and a greyhound they’re training to race, four middle-aged men and their housekeeper – in truth, defrocked priests and a nun – find their quiet lives suddenly disrupted by the shocking violence provoked by a newly arrived lodger, which then leads to investigation by a live-in representative of a ‘new church’ seemingly keen to clean up its all too often abusive act. The performances are uniformly great, while Larraín’s customarily murky visuals mirror the motives of all concerned. Note, however, that the film’s savage wit is not purely anti-clerical; once again, Larraín critiques a Chilean culture of complacency, concealment and conspiracy where wrongdoers feel they can (and should) get away with almost anything. Stark, fearless and Bible-black (Geoff Andrew, LFF).

The ‘presidency’ rotates every two years; this year it is the Goethe-Institut. Short Shorts from Europe are just that: a programme of compelling, brief shorts, one nominated by each institute. The Cork Film Festival has made a nomination of a short film from Poland. The programme is played for free, and then the audience and the institutes’ representatives repair to a Cork watering hole to discuss the fine films that have just been played. This year the films are:

THE RUSSIAN WOODPECKER Chad Garcia | UK | 2015 | 80mins | Subtitled 1930 | GATE

When the sharply charismatic (if somewhat eccentric) Ukranian artist Fedor Alexandrovich becomes transfixed by the Duga – a Soviet built radio antenna – he grows determined to lift the cloud of secrecy hovering over the construction and nearby Chernobyl site. The Russian Woodpecker is a tale of conspiracy, intrigue and corruption set against a backdrop of neo-Soviet paranoia and a Ukraine that is steadily imploding. Equally funny, tragic and thrilling, Chad Gracia’s playful and energetic approach to Fedor’s life changing investigation elevates an already compelling and thought provoking story.

CHRONIC Michel Franco | Mexico | France | 2015 | 92mins 2100 | GATE

Michel Franco stunned us with his searing portrait of a bullied schoolgirl, After Lucia. He returns with his latest uncompromising study of grief and isolation, which focuses on David, a full time, seemingly altruistic care-giver for the terminally ill. Chronic is an intimate and often uncomfortable piece of filmmaking, filmed in long, measured takes, meticulously framed and almost clinical in execution. Tim Roth’s portrayal of a man displaying subtly sociopathic tendencies is nothing short of revelatory. He brings a sense of empathy and humanity to a complex, often challenging character, providing an unconventional heart to a gratifyingly unconventional film.

While this laid-back existence has carried Will through his twenties, friends such as Molly (Eléonore Hendricks) and Patrick (Tate Ellington) are settling into committed relationships and progressing in their careers. It is time for Will to take stock of his life and begin contemplating the future. Shot on grainy 16mm film stock against a wintery New York City, this intimate character study is the debut feature from director Gregory Kohn.

As Jonathan Rosenbaum puts it, “F for Fake was for Welles a playful repository of public history intertwined with private in-jokes as well as duplicitous meanings, an elaborate blend of sense and nonsense that carries us along regardless of what’s actually being said”. SHEM THE PENMAN SINGS AGAIN Pádraig Trehy | Ireland | 2015 | 80mins 2000 | THE EVERYMAN PALACE

Shem The Penman is an imagined archive of the actual and much fabled friendship of James Joyce and John McCormack. The worldrenowned writer and the superstar tenor first met in 1904 when Joyce still had hopes of becoming a professional singer himself. They reconnected in Paris in the 1920s and Joyce was to use his first hand knowledge of McCormack to create the character of Shaun the Post in his famously ‘unreadable’ novel Finnegans Wake. As Joyce struggled with the book, he portrayed himself in it as Shaun’s lowly twin brother, Shem the Penman. Joyce’s twin obsessions, singing and literary experimentation, flow through the film as his and McCormack’s encounters are reimagined in a variety of early cinematic styles, constantly interrupted by a series of films within the film which chart the exploits of Shem and Shaun. As Joyce’s eyesight fails, the narrative is carried by a mix of archive recordings and imaginary radio broadcasts.

In a series of brilliant tactical maneuvers, Lawrence leads fifty of Feisal’s men in a tortured three week crossing of the Nefud Desert to attack the strategic Turkish held port of Aqaba. And following his successful raids against Turkish troops and trains, Lawrence’s triumphant leadership and unyielding courage gain him nearly god-like status among his Arab brothers. With Oscar® winning cinematography, magnificent locations and Maurice Jarre’s famed score, Lawrence of Arabia is a masterpiece. As part of David Lean Classics at the Cork Opera House, the Festival is proud to present the 4K digital restoration of the Director’s Cut, in all its glory.

ILLUMINATE: HEDI SCHNEIDER IS STUCK Sonja Heiss | Germany | Norway | 2015 | 92mins | Subtitled 1330 | TRISKEL CHRISTCHURCH

Hedi Schneider is Stuck is the story of a family set back by a problem that could interrupt any of our lives. Heiss’ triumph in her treatment of depression is the refreshing balance of tragedy and wry comedy the film achieves. The light touch and gentle tone of Hedi Schneider is Stuck rather than undermine the seriousness of the issues dealt with only make us realize the universal, human nature of them.

REMITTANCE Carolina Hellsgård | USA, Singapore, Philippines | 2014 | 97mins | Subtitled 1600 | GATE

Marie (Angela Barotia) is a Filipina housewife who travels to Singapore to be a domestic worker. She sends money home to support her layabout husband and her children while struggling to cope with demanding employers, long hours of work, and separation from her family. What is refreshing about Remittance is Marie’s situation becomes a journey of discovery since it allows for a range of possibilities that she has never had before – new friendships, lifestyle and a chance to re-make herself. With a remarkable performance from Barotia who, like her character in the film, in real life is a domestic worker living abroad, this is a touching and sincere drama.

KNIGHT OF CUPS Terence Malick | USA | 2015 | 118mins 1730 | CORK OPERA HOUSE

Rick is a slave to the Hollywood system. He is addicted to success but simultaneously despairs at the emptiness of his life. He is at home in a world of illusions but seeks real life. Like the tarot card of the title, Rick is easily bored and needs outside stimulation. But the Knight of Cups is also an artist, a romantic and an adventurer. In Terrence Malick’s seventh film a gliding camera once again accompanies a tormented hero on his search for meaning. Once again a voiceover is laid over images which also seek their own authenticity. And once again Malick seems to put the world out of joint. His symphonic flow of images contrasts cold, functional architecture with the ageless beauty of nature. Rick’s internal monologue coalesces with the voices of the women who cross his path, women who represent different principles in life: while one lives in the real world, the other embodies beauty and sensuality. Which path will Rick choose? In the city of angels and the desert that surrounds it, will he find his own way?

GRANDMA PAUL WEITZ | USA | 2014 | 80mins | 1830 | Gate 1830 | GATE

A raucous road movie starring Lily Tomlin as a foul-mouthed septuagenarian. Elle (Lily Tomlin) is a sharp-tongued, foul-mouthed poet in her 70s. Still reeling from the death of her long-time partner Violet, and in the process of breaking up with much younger new girlfriend Olivia, Elle’s defences are at an all-time high. When her 18-year-old granddaughter turns up needing help, the pair embark on a road trip through LA, which gives them just enough time to confront both their demons and each other. Unsurprisingly, Tomlin is nothing short of divine as the gloriously profane septuagenarian, whose curt words and emotional armour can’t quite mask her broken heart. It’s impossible to deny this is Tomlin’s film, although the excellent supporting cast all get their chance to shine. Displaying a lightness of touch, along with a fair dose of insight, About A Boy director Paul Weitz has crafted a supremely enjoyable, consistently surprising road movie. About a girl. Or two. (Michael Blyth, LFF).

Off the sofa, on with the backpack, down with the trousers - let’s go for a stream-of-consciousness narrated, existential, life crisis trek in the great forest. It is easy to get bored with this life. Life at the office, on the sofa, or before the telly – fixed ingredients of middle-class adult life in today’s Norway. OTHELLO Orson Welles | Morocco, Italy | 1952 | 91mins 1130 | TRISKEL CHRISTCHURCH

Winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1952, this is Orson Welles’ dynamic version of Shakespeare’s tragedy with the director taking on the title role himself. Othello was one of Welles’s most complicated shoots: When the original financier was declared bankrupt, he poured his own money into the project. When funds were low, he would cease filming and take on an acting role (such as Harry Lime in The Third Man) to bring in money. As a result, it took three years to complete but it was worth the wait. The final result is both bravura Orson Welles and superb cinematic Shakespeare.

Following Russia’s launch of Sputnik, the US hired lots of astronomers, and four young British men spent a formative year in California in the early 60s, taking holiday road-trips exploring both the earth and the skies of their new home. Now they are reuniting to recreate the trip: how has their work shaped our understanding of the universe and our humble place in it? Tracing the major discoveries in astronomy in the 20th century through these four men, the film also explores friendship and mortality – and the fleetingness of our lives played out under the stars.

DOCTOR ZHIVAGO David Lean | UK, USA | 1965 | 200mins 1530 | CORK OPERA HOUSE

An epic romance set against the backdrop of the Russian Revolution, David Lean’s Doctor Zhivago is one of cinema’s great love stories. It is based on Boris Pasternak’s novel of the same name, immensely popular in the West, but banned in the Soviet Union. In Moscow on the eve of the First World War, and in the lead up to the Russian Civil War of 1917-1922, medical student Yuri Zhivago (Omar Sharif) meets the beautiful Lara (Julie Christie), setting in train a fateful romance that turns their lives upside down. The film won five Oscars, including best Original score for Maurice Jarre, and features excellent supporting performances by Alec Guinness, Rod Steiger, Geraldine Chaplin and Tom Courtenay. Doctor Zhivago portrays at its heart an intensely human and passionate relationship, challenged by the monumental politics of tradition and war. 103

An ambitious Wall Street psychologist ... a carer on a zero hours contract ... a prisoner who fell to Clinton’s three strikes and you’re out policy ... rich stories these, and in telling them and four others, Katharine Round humanises the bleak fact that growing inequality is driving a terrible wedge through modern society. This is an engrossing, cinematic, thought-provoking essay which flags up some root causes of today’s societal woes - and raises disturbing questions about the future. Inspired by the best-selling book The Spirit Level, The Divide demonstrates the terrible impact that decades of misguided economic decisions is having on modern lives.

THE GREAT WALL Tadgh O’Sullivan | Ireland | 2014 | 82mins 1800 | GATE

This bold documentary, an adaptation of a Kafka story, looks at the enclosure of Europe by a complex system of walls and fences. Mysterious and visually dazzling, the film journeys across a range of European landscapes, and encounters those whose lives are defined by these walls. The film journeys from a Spanish enclave in North Africa where the border with Europe is marked by a three-metre barbed fence, to London and Brussels, seats of power and exclusion. Returning to the Festival after Yximalloo in 2014, O’Sullivan’s directorial strength is underpinned by his fine editing and sound artistry. (Sunniva O’Flynn). Credit: IFI / IFA
