The Festival is delighted to close with Amma Asante’s powerful and heartwarming telling of the true story of the interracial marriage of Englishwoman Ruth Williams to the former Bechuanaland royal Seretse Khama, who led his nation to independence from the British Empire. David Oyelowo plays the new country Botswana’s first President, and Rosamund Pike the accomplished white middle class office worker, whose romance and then marriage outrages everyone – his family, hers, South African Government officials, the Botswanian people and British officialdom and society alike. All contributions – Sam McCurdy’s gorgeous photography of the sweeping plains of Botswana, Patrick Doyle’s emotive score and Simon Bowles’s meticulous production design are standouts – combining to glorious effect, delivering a pitch perfect night in the cinema. His weird – what is it? A fixation? A gift? – is put to use when he believes he is on the trail of his town’s ‘real’ serial killer; he alone can catch him. This bold, dexterous thriller hybrid from Irish Producer Nick Ryan (director, The Summit, CFF13) and Cork native writer/director Billy O’Brien, is simultaneously both a tension ratcheting rollercoaster ride and a wry positing of contemporary adolescent sociopathy.

Beitar Jerusalem FC is known for having the most controversial fans in the Israeli soccer league. Their most loyal – and most right-wing – fans are known as ‘la Familia' and pride themselves that the team has remained ‘forever pure’, never having fielded an Arab player. When in 2012 the team selects two Chechen Muslims to join the squad, controversy, racism and hatred embroil the team. This Irish co-produced documentary is a disturbing portrait of a society rife with extreme nationalism, and a timely topic when right-wing politics globally is on the rise.

Mumford & Sons have never stayed still. An innate desire to travel, to meet people and to do the unexpected has become a calling card of sorts as fans the world over join their community and fall in love with their constantly evolving music. This film follows the band as they play the major cities of South Africa with an eclectic mix of musician friends. Along the way they set a fresh challenge for themselves, taking their collaborative culture one step further as they attempt to write and record a mini-album in just two days. The film explores the art of songwriting in an unforced and natural way and captures the journey and story as a group of artists collide, bringing references, ideas and musical styles from Senegal, Sweden, Malawi, Cape Town and London. Donal Gallagher hosts this special screening, and is joined by special guests Courtesy of Eagle Rock Films and Sunshine Pictures

Illuminate lluminate is Cork Film Festival’s series of film and discussion events, which use film to explore different aspects of mental health

Using the powerful medium of film as a starting point, Illuminate encourages better understanding and conversations around the diverse and complex issues that affect so many of us pertaining to our mental health, and the stigma surrounding it. These carefully curated events – are unique in enabling discussion about mental health in an open, welcoming space. Each screening is followed by an extended panel discussion and Q+A, with a range of filmmakers, artists, mental health professionals and service end users, ethicists and advocates. Themes of isolation, difference and anxiety will be explored. This important and timely film and discussion series will touch on issues that affect us all. The series is presented in association with Arts+Minds and the HSE Cork Mental Health Services.

Exploring innovative new models of film finance and audience engagement. 1100 | THE RIVER LEE | €20
Alt.Fund is the Cork Film Festival’s new Industry initiative, which explores innovative and non-traditional models for financing work and developing and further engaging audiences. From working with brands, nonprofits and creative agencies, to lessons in targeting your audience and securing distribution, this session will revolutionise the way you think about getting your film financed and seen. Curated for newly established film professionals, this event looks beyond traditional models of film finance and

opens a host of other ways to achieve your creative goals and expand your audiences. The day is a mixture of interactive sessions, case studies from producers, filmmakers and agencies, and a survey of recent developments in crowdfunding. As Cork Film Festival continues to expand its focus on high quality Irish and International Documentary Cinema, this new flagship event brings together Irish and international industry leaders to discuss the landscape in which projects are conceived of, developed and distributed. The packed day will address agenda-setting issues within the industry and explore the worlds of festival programming, the changing landscapes of commissioning and distribution, and explore unique productions. The day is aimed at established
directors, producers and writers – anyone serious about growing their career in documentary. Doc Day seeks to inform, debate, inspire and connect through a range of panel discussions, case studies and talks which address the needs and interests of the documentary community and industry. Importantly, the day offers participants and industry members the opportunity to network with industry leaders, peers and key figures from the international marketplace.

The nonsensical plot – tangled, shaky and silly – doesn’t matter here. What does is the opportunity to see on the big screen, for the first time for many, the late great Gene Wilder in one of his most accomplished and polished comedy roles; Harvey Korman as Hedley Lamarr (*not* ‘Hedi’); Brooks himself chewing the scenery as Governor William J Lepetomane; Madeline Kahn as the Marlene Dietrich-esque Lili von Shtupp; Mongol knocking out a horse; and, of course, that baked beans scene. Life Animated follows Owen’s journey to adulthood and independence and tells the story of his own Disney-esque triumphs.
