Cork Film Festival is an audience festival, loyally supported by Corkonians, and attracting visitors from all over Ireland and abroad, reflecting an unstinting curiosity, appetite and appreciation for the arts. We hope that you will be equally excited, entertained and inspired by this year’s programme.

James Mullighan Creative Director

A very warm welcome to the 61st Cork Film Festival. I am very proud of the Programme that the team and I have created: a veritable cornucopia of entertaining, challenging, thrilling and amazing films from each corner of the globe, including our own corner in Cork. Whether it is perhaps 2016’s most talked about film The Birth of a Nation, or a timely documentary holding a mirror up to society, you’ll find something in these pages that you are certain to enjoy.

Helen Boyle Chair of the Board

The Board gratefully acknowledges the significant and enduring support of the Festival’s funders and partners, and in particular, our Principal Funder, the Arts Council, and Cork City Council. We are delighted to continue our partnership with RTÉ as Principal Partner, and we welcome all our new and returning sponsors and partners. Sincere thanks to the Festival team and volunteers, and above all, our loyal audience, for your continued support - we hope to reward you with a wonderful Festival in 2016.

Cllr Des Cahill Ardmhéara Chorcaí, Lord Mayor of Cork

I am delighted to welcome you to the 61st edition of the Cork Film Festival, one of the City’s most significant and popular annual arts events. Blessed with astonishing power and poise, Sergei Polunin took the dance world by storm and became the Royal Ballet’s youngest ever principal. He revolutionised notions of ballet and became a mainstream celebrity in his own right. At the peak of his success, aged 25, he walked away, driven to the brink of selfdestruction by stardom. Here is an unprecedented look into the life of a complex young man who has made ballet go viral. Courtesy of Dogwoof

David Oyelowo plays the new country Botswana’s first President, and Rosamund Pike the accomplished white middle class office worker, whose romance and then marriage outrages everyone – his family, hers, South African Government officials, the Botswanian people and British officialdom and society alike. All contributions – Sam McCurdy’s gorgeous photography of the sweeping plains of Botswana, Patrick Doyle’s emotive score and Simon Bowles’s meticulous production design are standouts – combining to glorious effect, delivering a pitch perfect night in the cinema. I Am Not a Serial Killer Billy O’Brien | Ireland, UK | 2016 | 104mins

THU 17 | 2045 | THE EVERYMAN

Clinically diagnosed sociopath teenager John (Max Records) obsesses over Jeffrey Dahmer, utterly convinced of his understanding of and empathy with psychopathy, to the point that he confesses to his shrink he’s worried that he might hurt someone. His weird – what is it? A fixation? A gift? – is put to use when he believes he is on the trail of his town’s ‘real’ serial killer; he alone can catch him. This bold, dexterous thriller hybrid from Irish Producer Nick Ryan (director, The Summit, CFF13) and Cork native writer/director Billy O’Brien, is simultaneously both a tension ratcheting rollercoaster ride and a wry positing of contemporary adolescent sociopathy.

Thursday 17 November

S p e c i al Ir i s h Pr e s e n ta t i o n s

Beitar Jerusalem FC is known for having the most controversial fans in the Israeli soccer league. Their most loyal – and most right-wing – fans are known as ‘la Familia' and pride themselves that the team has remained ‘forever pure’, never having fielded an Arab player. When in 2012 the team selects two Chechen Muslims to join the squad, controversy, racism and hatred embroil the team. This Irish co-produced documentary is a disturbing portrait of a society rife with extreme nationalism, and a timely topic when right-wing politics globally is on the rise.

This screening will be followed by a Q+A with dir. Billy O’Brien and prod. Nick Ryan

Focus on Germany

At the heart of the European project have always been France and Germany, and it is to the latter’s cinema that the Festival turns for this special focus. From Dietrich Brüggemann’s coruscating and outrageous spoof of neo-Nazism Heil, through a timely Catholic Church abuse cover up drama The Culpable, to the psychological power plays of Matthias X Oberg’s Zazy (in Competition), this hugely diverse mini Festival in a Festival is a celebration of a cinema superpower. “I don’t look at a face,” says Donna Washington in Mike Hoolboom’s extraordinarily moving Scrapbook. “I disappear into it.” The mercurial Hoolboom has long been a doyenne of experimental film, proudly inhabiting the margins. Yet major film festivals such as Edinburgh and his native Toronto have garlanded him with Best Short Film Awards. It’s a reminder that experimental doesn’t necessarily mean niche. Therefore we hope you find plenty here to disappear into.

Certain Women Kelly Reichardt | USA | 2016 | 107mins

1830 | THE EVERYMAN | €12/10 The Festival celebrates its return ‘home’ to The Everyman with Kelly Reichardt’s impeccably judged study of the lives of Montana women, starring Michelle Williams, Laura Dern and Kristen Stewart. Reichardt returns to the American West, by way of Maile Meloy’s short stories, but upends its traditional associations. Here, the rugged men of yesteryear struggle with age, injury, and indignation while the women imperfectly blaze trails. Reichardt’s unhurried, observational style resists judgment or sentimentality. The picturesque setting masks lives of quiet desperation and conflicting emotion. The intersecting stories strain with longing, populated by flawed people wrestling with moral ambiguity and living between isolation and intimacy. Courtesy of Sony Pictures and Park Circus.

1900 | GATE “Film me while I die” was one of the last requests of Thérèse Clerc, a paragon of the feminist movement. Yet this is a film about life - Thérèse’s life, her politics and her ideologies which had many iterations. Her impact on the feminist movement is immeasurable. It is unusual enough to see women of this age celebrated and honored in any form onscreen, but that “The Lives of Thérèse” does it in such a heartbreakingly unsentimental manner approaches the transcendent. – Jessica Kiang, Variety Queer Palme d’Or – Cannes 2016

Based on the life of the avant-garde artist Władysław Strzemiński (brilliantly played by Polish superstar Bogusław Linda), it blazes with energy, passion, and controlled fury as it follows the life of a man who refuses to bend to official ideology, even when it threatens his very existence. Power on the Box 1300 | TRISKEL CHRISTCHURCH What impact did the arrival of television have on the way the Irish state did Democracy’?. 55 years after the establishment of Teilifís Eireann and in the wake of historic elections on both sides of the Atlantic, it is timely to assess if television has purified or perverted the way in which our politicians perform their public duties. In the chamber, on the campaign trail, in the count centre and in gladiatorial debate, did the unrelenting glare of the audience hold our public representatives to account or to ransom? Power On The Box tells this rollercoaster story. Authored by Harry McGee, and commissioned by RTÉ, it is the tale of how TV changed Irish politics forever. Courtesy of RTÉ

1500 | THE EVERYMAN The Eagle Huntress is a story for all the family, following Aisholpan, a 13-year-old Mongolian girl, as she trains to become the first female in 12 generations of her family to become an eagle hunter. Narrated by executive producer Daisy Ridley (Star Wars: the Force Awakens), and featuring stunning cinematography by Simon Niblett, this riveting documentary is a rare look at one of the world's last true wildernesses. It's a larger-thanlife story, but one that's anchored by intimate moments. Our young heroine's passion takes her on an incredible journey with an enriching and empowering lesson that will set hearts soaring. This film is recommended for ages 10+

Blazing Saddles Mel Brooks | USA | 1974 | 93mins

1200 | THE EVERYMAN Definitely a contender for one of the least tasteful movies of all time is this comedy masterpiece of Mel Brooks. The nonsensical plot – tangled, shaky and silly – doesn’t matter here. What does is the opportunity to see on the big screen, for the first time for many, the late great Gene Wilder in one of his most accomplished and polished comedy roles; Harvey Korman as Hedley Lamarr (*not* ‘Hedi’); Brooks himself chewing the scenery as Governor William J Lepetomane; Madeline Kahn as the Marlene Dietrich-esque Lili von Shtupp; Mongol knocking out a horse; and, of course, that baked beans scene. The low comedy masterpiece with everything, there’s even a pie fight. Courtesy of Park Circus
