WELCOME Recently named the most culturally vibrant city in Europe by the EU, Cork is Ireland’s fastest-growing city, a destination for culture lovers with a thriving arts scene. At its heart is Cork Film Festival; 63 years young, Ireland’s first and largest film festival continues to entertain the people of Cork, Ireland, and our many international visitors with programmes that reflect the character of this booming port city: friendly, diverse and outward-looking. Cllr. Mick Finn Árdmhéara Chorcai, Lord Mayor of Cork

Cork City Council is honoured to part-fund the Festival and especially delighted that the opening film comes from one of Cork’s own filmmakers, Carmel Winters. With funding support from Cork City and County Councils through Film in Cork, Float Like a Butterfly demonstrates our commitment to supporting film production and the Festival. We couldn’t be prouder.

At Cork Film Festival we pride ourselves on our commitment not just to bringing the best new Irish and international cinema to Cork, but to working with artists and organisations – both local and national – to champion new talent and to bring film to new audiences.

Helen Boyle Chair of the Board

The Festival has always been deeply woven into the fabric of Cork, forming lasting partnerships with its businesses, cultural institutions and community organisations, and on behalf of the Festival Board and team I wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to all our stakeholders, Festival Friends and Volunteers, for their support. In particular, I would like to thank our partners, especially the Arts Council, our principal funder, and Cork City Council, whose invaluable support enables this Festival to deliver an internationally significant celebration of cinema to Cork’s residents and visitors alike. We warmly welcome you to the Festival this year.

INTRODUCTION

Fiona Clark Festival Producer and CEO

When the first Cork Film Festival took place the ‘King’ was belting out ‘Blue Suede Shoes’ and, like rock ‘n’ roll itself, over 63 years we’ve retained our youthful energy and rebellious verve. Our mission remains steadfast: to bring people together through an outstanding programme of films and events and to create an unforgettable festival experience over ten days in Cork. Whilst the digital age drives rapid change and the film landscape is continually evolving, one thing is constant - our need to tell and share stories. We believe it is vital that we continue to push artistic boundaries, support new talent, and seek out fresh audiences for cinema. Our ambition, as we build towards our 65th anniversary in 2020, is to make Cork Film Festival the destination of choice for great storytelling on film, for filmmakers and audiences alike. As Ireland’s first and largest film festival, we hope that this year’s programme of over 240 features and shorts will excite and entertain, and perhaps even inspire the creative visionaries of tomorrow. Please join us for a feast of films this November; at the Festival you can explore and discover the world without leaving Cork!

Michael Hayden Programme Director

It is with some measure of pride and excitement that we’re able to present the programme for the 63rd Cork Film Festival. We set out, as usual, to celebrate significant auteurs while acknowledging award-winners on the international film festival circuit and recognising emerging filmmakers; to screen provocative and engaged nonfiction work; include repertory titles which complement the new work we screen; and produce world-class shorts programmes. It’s now up to you, our audiences, to judge if we have achieved those ambitions. I want to thank my fellow programmers, who have been brilliant and supportive over the year. I acknowledge all the distributors, sales agents and film representatives who have been keen to engage with the Festival. Most of all, I want to thank the filmmakers whose work we are honoured to showcase.

FEATURE

In rural Ireland during the 1960s, Frances (a break-out performance from Hazel Doupe) is a teenage Traveller who has coped with tragedy from a young age. With her father Michael (Dara Devaney) in prison, she has learnt to fend for herself and her devotion to Muhammad Ali has inspired a passion for boxing. When Michael is released, though, he has forthright opinions about how a young woman should behave. As Michael decides to uproot his family and go roaming, fiery Frances begins her own journey of discovery. Cork Film Festival is thrilled to present the second feature from awardwinning filmmaker Carmel Winters as our opening night gala. Shot in Skibbereen and Goleen, Float Like a Butterfly is a life-affirming delight that fiercely challenges patriarchy and stereotypes. LORDS OF CHAOS

USA 2018

112 mins

Jonas Åkerlund 22:30 | TRISKEL

FEATURE

A gruesome tale of suicide, arson, murder, satanism, corpsepaint and extreme music. What could be more terrifying? Maybe that it actually happened in Norway in the early nineties. Directed by Jonas Åkerlund, and based on the nonfiction book of the same name, Lords of Chaos hurls us into black metal year zero with the formation of the legendary band Mayhem, and its opportunistic founder

Øystein ‘Euronymous’ Aarseth (Rory Culkin), his mission: to sell music via any exploitative means. However, when his new friend Varg Vickernes (Emory Cohen) starts to believe his rhetoric, things quickly head towards a burning, bloody climax. SE

It’s never too early to be annoyed by Christmas! Based on Dr Seuss’ well-loved seasonal classic, the grumpy Grinch plots to ruin Christmas for the village of Whoville. When the villagers decide to make Christmas three times bigger this year, the Grinch realizes there’s only one way to ensure some peace and quiet: he must steal Christmas. Will the Grinch succeed, or will he have his heart changed by one young girl’s generous spirit? FC Pre-screening ‘adventure’ starts at 10.30 - see p. 107 for details.

The latest work from celebrated documentarian Laura Nix follows six brilliant students as they prepare for the world’s largest high school science competition: the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. These young scientists, from Indonesia, India, Mexico and Hawaii, have recognised threats to their local and the global environment and set out to find solutions to change the world. Inventing Tomorrow is a valuable acknowledgement of a generation that can’t rely on others to ensure they have a future and the hopeful, positive tone marks it out from the growing cannon of films addressing environmental issues. Stephen Maing 13:30 | GATE

USA 2018

114 mins

DOCUMENTARY

In 2015, a group of the city’s cops put their careers at risk when they sued New York City and its police department. The case concerned illegal arrest quotas the NYPD insisted didn’t exist, yet evidence suggests these black and Latino officers were being consistently subjected to immense pressure, forced to arrest and imprison people who, in most cases, looked like them. Those arrested would spend months in prison before having their cases dismissed due to lack of evidence. With unprecedented access to the courageous participants in the lawsuit and featuring a memorable private investigator, Crime + Punishment is one of the most searing documentaries of the year. WILD STRAWBERRIES (SMULTRONSTÄLLET)

Ingmar Bergman 13:30 | THE EVERYMAN

Sweden 1957

91 mins Subtitled

CLASSIC

Taking the deceptively simple form of a road movie, Bergman’s masterpiece touches on all the big issues – ageing, loneliness, redemption, regret – with the lightest of touches. Like Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol, a calcified man, long set in his cheerless ways, has a series of encounters, some in the form of shades, which prompt him to repent and reassess his ways. Innovative in its use of dream sequences and deft in its colliding of memory and reality, Wild Strawberries belies its director’s reputation as a morose and pessimistic filmmaker for its compassion and hopeful conclusion. Helen (Augie Duke) rattles around her cramped apartment struggling to come to terms with being raped by her boyfriend. The incident has thrown up painful memories from her past, and Helen has to confront her denial, anger and self-destructive instincts in order to get through her trauma and liberate herself. Shot in stark black and white and featuring a striking, courageous performance from Duke in the lead role, the debut feature from Angelica Zollo is a frank, fearless exploration of the emotional consequences of sexual abuse, a timely and impactful statement from an auspicious filmmaker on the rise. Tito is a shy 10-year-old boy who lives with his mother and loves making machines, just like his scientist dad who disappeared while inventing a device to help pigeons communicate. They embark on a journey to save the world and Tito’s search for the antidote becomes a quest for his missing father. Jane Magnusson 16:15 | GATE

© AB Svensk Filmindustri

Sweden 2018

117 mins Subtitled

DOCUMENTARY

In 1957, Ingmar Bergman turned 39 years old. Already established as a serious figure in world cinema, that year he would release two of his signature masterpieces, The Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries. He also wrote and shot Brink of Life, produced two acclaimed stage works, worked in radio and a television and faced upheavals in his personal life. To mark the great auteur’s centenary, Swedish filmmaker Jane Magnusson acknowledges that productive year as a starting point to explore Bergman the man. The result celebrates the genius of his work while presenting a warts-and-all portrait of the complex figure who made it. MH Official Selection, Cannes Film Festival, 2018

HALE COUNTY THIS MORNING, THIS EVENING

RaMell Ross 16:15 | TRISKEL

USA 2018

76 mins

DOCUMENTARY

Photographer and filmmaker RaMell Ross presents an intimate and occasionally heartbreaking depiction of the Southern African American experience. Shot over five years and crediting the acclaimed Thai auteur Apichatpong Weerasethakul as creative adviser, the film is composed of captured moments of people in a community, while the stories of Daniel, a student at the historically black Bible college Selma University, and Quincy, a father and husband, are gradually expanded on. There’s little hand wringing or fist waving here; the drama is subtle, plaintive and the casual beauty is striking. Hale County This Morning, This Evening is an exquisite, rare non-fiction work that takes the breath away. MH Winner, Special Documentary Jury Prize for Creative Vision, Sundance Film Festival, 2018

UNTIL FIRST LIGHT

Kyle Armstrong 16:30 | GATE

82 mins

Book Now: corkfilmfest.org | 021 427 1711

FEATURE

A meditation on grief, loss and uncertainty, Until First Light sees a man (Darren Frank) return home to his mother and sister in the wake of his brother’s tragic death on the family farm. Shot with available light and set against the backdrop of the Canadian prairies, the film captures a smouldering and oftentimes beautifully brittle landscape that matches the rawness of the emotions portrayed. With this minimal approach, Armstrong has fashioned a distinctive debut feature situated in a crepuscular world of liminal spaces, accentuated by avant-rock musician Jim O’Rourke’s sparse score. DOCUMENTARY

In a small shop in New York’s Greenwich Village, craftsman Rick Kelly builds custom-made guitars, ably assisted by his apprentice Cindy Hulej and mother Dorothy. What is unique about the guitars in Rick’s shop is that they are crafted using wood reclaimed from some of New York’s most historic buildings and locations, bringing the sound of the city to the instruments themselves. Over five days, director Ron Mann documents the shop and its customers, among them Bill Frisell, Jim Jarmusch and Wilco’s Nels Cline, who all take great delight in sampling Kelly’s wares, and highlights a New York that is rapidly disappearing. DOCUMENTARY

Academy Award®-winner Morgan Neville brings to the screen, with great reverence and authenticity, the life of the iconic Mr Rogers, surrogate further to generations of American children through his popular public television show Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. A true gentleman and man of affable nature, Fred Rogers’ compassion in communicating with his youth audience, and his mantra, ‘I like you just the way you are’, brought a quietly radical approach to both children’s entertainment and psychology. Weaving archival material, animated sequences and highly personal interviews, Won’t You Be My Neighbor? is a beautiful tribute and a rare salve of positivity in these turbulent times. With the unwitting assistance of his granddaughter Alice, the roguish and cantankerous Thaddeus and his girlfriend Sally escape from their nursing home to carry out their plan in a coastal hideaway. It’s unusual for a debut director to focus in on themes of death and ageing, albeit in a comic drama, but it is to Morgan and his leads’ credit that they do so with little vanity. The footage here of Italian warships picking desperate people out of the Mediterranean Sea is horribly familiar given how the refugee crisis has developed. Swiss documentarian Markus Imhoof depicts the endurance of people who have been driven to search out a new life in Europe, while making a connection with his own experience and a poignant encounter he had with the Italian refugee child taken into his home during World War II. Terror lurks around every corner in Ognjen Glavonić’s tense feature debut. A masterpiece of early horror cinema, Nosferatu still has the power to send chills down the spine of cinemagoers 96 years after its creation. Now renowned Cork composers Irene and Linda Buckley present the film with a new score, never before performed in Ireland, utilising the majestic organ at Saint Fin Barre’s Cathedral, accompanied by viola, cello and electronics. The eerie modern classical score – comprising beautiful recurrent themes together with moments of chilling dark ambience and intense, ominous drone – is so complementary to Murnau’s foreboding imagery that you would think they had always been together. The narrative feature debut from esteemed documentarian and film critic Kent Jones, Diane is an authentic and honest character study which explores the intricacies of ageing and the struggle to maintain your selfhood in mid-life. In a masterful lead performance by Mary Kate Place, gracious and altruistic caregiver Diane wanders through the frame, a humble and unassuming figure. Weathering personal tragedy, familial woes and the reverberating trauma of addiction, the film cleverly centres its titular character as lynchpin to explore themes of identity and vulnerability, all told from the rarely seen perspective of an older female protagonist. This curious pretence unearths all manner of juxtapositions: that of east and west, of class divides, and of bitter post-communist generational conflict. Using vibrant cinematography and the energetic rhythms of 90s house music to directly oppose its bleak setting, Crystal Swan is a wildly confident debut from Darya Zhuk, and a fascinating study of post-communist youth. RG Official Selection, Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, 2018 Presented in association with Cork Cine Club. There will be a postscreening Q&A with the director.

FEATURE

Demonstrating a keen interest in the intersections between institutions and individuals, Antoine Bourges follows a young caseworker in his feature debut. Beginning with her professional environment, the focus turns to her dealings with Eric, a young man with mental health issues who is appearing in court charged with theft. Bourges’ minimalist technique of using long, fixed-camera takes brings a documentary-like sensibility to the film, his use of non-actors adding a deeper layer of verisimilitude. Thanks to his dispassionate eye, Bourges gives an evenhanded – if not empathetic – view of both sides, but most admirable is his commitment to those who fall through the cracks. FEATURE

In Cyril Schäublin’s formally precise feature debut, a call centre employee, Alice (Sarah Stauffer), commits fraud on elderly ladies by pretending to be their granddaughter in financial distress. Her job, at the wonderfully named Everything Switzerland, involves selling internet subscriptions and insurance deals, and her supervisor’s motivational advice that they are ‘selling emotions’ finds darkly humorous expression in Alice’s nefarious activities. Schäublin’s coolly detached tone matches the temperature of a highly digitised society, mining deadpan humour from an increasingly isolated and atomised society where there’s an elaborate security code for everything.
