From the EDITOR Welcome to the 2019 LOVE Issue! Do you remember your first date? I didn’t say first LOVE...I’m talking first date. Well for some reason, I remember mine like it was yesterday! It was December 30th, 1965, and that happened to be my 17th birthday. My older sister Virginia, who was 18 years older than I, wanted to have a birthday party for me. I loved her dearly like a mother – she always took care of me. This is a true story. Here’s the catch – I, along with all my buddies, had to bring a date. Each of us country bumpkins slicked our hair back and showed up to the party with not only a date, but some very foxy looking Stroud girls. Since most of these fine ladies are now 70 year old happily married grandmothers, I’ll just call my date Jane Doe. I was a nervous wreck as I pulled up to Jane’s house in my pale green GMC pick-em-up truck. I knocked on the door and she whispered, “Have a seat right here while I

finish getting ready.” I thought, no problem! As I waited, her small but muscular father is lying on the sofa asleep from watching the six o’clock news. He awakened and said, “Who the ‘blank’ are you, and why the ‘blank’ are you sitting there?” Shaking, I said, “I’m Joe and I’m taking Jane to my sister’s house for my 17th birthday party.” I should have at least asked her out again. Isn’t life crazy! I’m taking medication for dementia and unsure of what I did yesterday. However, I can tell you in detail what I did 53 years ago. She loves you Yeah Yeah Yeah! LOVE is all you need. LOVE is all you need. Enjoy the LOVE issue!

PRESIDENTS, GROUNDHOGS & AMORE by MICHELLE BROWN

F

FOOTBALL. Are you ready for some Football?! Don’t miss Superbowl Sunday, February 3. The Superbowl often seems to fall on a frosty, cold February day. Even if you are not a football fan, many of us are Superbowl commercial fans. Personally, I can’t wait to see the Clydesdales and their heart melting shenanigans!

E

ENGAGEMENT. This is the month of engagements happening for many couples. It seems the frosty, cold month of February sparks engagements that lead to beautiful June brides. When you see these excited couples along The Corridor, share your wedding blessings!

B

BE MY VALENTINE! Love is in the air. Per the legend, Cupid will spend this month shooting magical goldtipped arrows at the gods and humans alike, causing lucky individuals to fall deeply in love!

R

ROSES. These beauties are the favorite choice for Valentine’s Day bouquets. Some 250 MILLION roses will be purchased in the United States this month. Each color of rose offers a distinct meaning. Of course, during February, red is the color of first choice by many. It is said, a red rose is the “lover’s rose” signifying enduring passion and romance.

U

UNITED STATES PRESIDENTS Abraham Lincoln and George Washington both have February birthdays. Celebrated the third Monday of every February, President’s Day is viewed as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents, past and present.

A

AMORE, AFFECTION, ADORATION. All words that say “I love you” or show a loving gesture. February is filled with flowers, special chocolates and lots of Amore!

R

RODENT! On February 2, we look forward to seeing a little rodent meteorologist named Punxsutawney Phil emerge from his burrow. This prestigious varmint fulfils the superstition that if a groundhog sees his shadow due to clear weather, it will retreat to its den and old man winter will persist for six more weeks, or, if the groundhog does not see its’ shadow because of cloudiness, spring will arrive early. Let’s all pray Punxsutawney Phil can predict accurate weather along The Corridor!

Y

LEAP YEAR – not this year! So if you were born on February 29 you will always be young! The next leap year will fall on February 29, 2020. I am jealous of those who grow a year older only every four years!

A SOULMATE... A SPECIAL GIFT

Many couples celebrate their love on Facebook: a couple announces 52 years of wedded bliss with a split picture of them kissing at their wedding and kissing in the present; another warn their friends to save the date for their upcoming nuptials; still others share “selfies” they’ve taken on a mountain top or special vacation. Often the captions for these posts say something about soulmates. Lots of different folks have their own ideas of what it means to be soulmates, but it begs the question: “How does a person know when she/he has found her/his soulmate?” Some folks speak about their soulmate in terms of fairy tale or romantic legend, but our lives are not fiction or magic. Rather, when I speak of my soulmate, I say that Connee is a special gift in my life – I pray I am a gift in hers. The best part of every day is always when we are together, at home or any other place. Some of my best days are when I’m able to take enough time to drive to Chandler to pick her up from her office to go to lunch. How wonderful to catch up with each other’s day, even though it’s just been a few hours since we kissed “Goodbye” to go to work! She’s listens to what’s happening in my day, and I want hear about what’s going on in hers. That’s being a gift to one another. Connee is my soulmate. She puts up with my flaws and makes great efforts not to complain about all my foibles. I have a messy garage, a messy closet, and a messy storage room. Every once in a while she’ll let me know how she feels about my messiness, but she hardly ever threatens to throw all my stuff out on the front lawn. She knows that putting up with my mess is just a part of life with Paul. She often compliments my appearance, and lets me know if I’ve chosen a shirt and trousers that don’t look good together. 24 THE CORRIDOR MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2019

by Pastor Paul Ragle

{ How does a person know when he or she has found his or her soulmate? Folks speak of soulmates completing each other. I’d rather say that we are each healthy complete people who have together chosen to be partners in life. We don’t feel a compunction to do everything together. I like to get out early in the day to get my exercise over with. Connee would rather take her walks in the evening after she gets home from work. I like getting outside to play with our grandchildren, she prefers spending time with them doing other things. As life partners, Connee and I love to do things together. We like to explore new places. Last fall we went to the Chickasaw Cultural Center and the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. This summer we’ll make a trip to Ohio to be a part of our niece’s wedding. Together we’ve discovered how much fun it is to take our grandchildren along on our adventures – although I admit it’s a lot more work for Connee than it is for me! We love to take the kids to the Jasmine Moran Children’s Museum in Seminole! Connee and I are soulmates. We cry together…laugh together…pray together…make a home together. Why? Because we choose to be soulmates for each other. It’s not fairytale magic. But it’s wonderful! Anybody got a great idea what I can do for my soulmate for Valentine’s Day? n

Happily Ever After

by ROBBIE McCOMMAS

From the first smile to the first date, these couples have figured out ‘Happily Ever After’. With over three decades of experience, they know what love is. Whether they were looking for everlasting love and commitment as teenagers or not, they accepted their wedding vows and brought forth a relationship of honor and respect. They’ve withstood hard times hand in hand and kept the fire burning in their hearts. They haven’t reached the golden years, but they’re well on their way. DARRELL AND TAMMY BAILEY celebrated their 35th anniver-

DARRELL & TAMM

Y

sary September 2nd. They met at a high school basketball game when Tammy was 15, and Darrell 19. The couple reside in Carney and work together at Bailey’s Paving Company. They have three beautiful girls and two adorable grandchildren. They love going on small trips, watching movies, spontaneously taking off to dinner, and spending time at home with their family. “The secret to marriage is that I’m the boss!” Darrell laughed. “I try to keep Tammy happy,” he said with humor, “and that’s hard to do!” Tammy says they “get” each other, and respect each other. She attributes these qualities to marriage success. “We have ups and downs like everyone, but never let the downs go too long without fixing them.”

WILL AND LEEANN GRAGG, celebrated their 35th wed-

ding anniversary November 12. They met when LeeAnn was 14, and Will 15, at her home in Fallis. The couple reside in Wellston. Will is employed at Tinker and LeeAnn enjoys being at home where she is available for the grandkids. They were blessed with four wonderful children and 14 grands! Family time is special to the Graggs, talk about a full house! They enjoy date nights, going on cruises and traveling. “Marriage is give and take,” says Will as he answered the secret to success question. “The answer is always yes dear… Lol. Raise your family in a Christian home, keep your eyes focused on your bride, never let them wander. Be true to yourself and your wife. Be the leader of your house as the Lord has set you to be.” “Don’t go to bed angry,” LeeAnn continued. “Give and take both ways. It is not 50-50, it’s always 100-100. Build a strong relationship with God and pray daily for your spouse. Go to church together. Even in the rough times, build your husband up, he gets beat up on by the world enough.” The Gragg’s plan to celebrate their 35th with a summer trip to Niagara Falls.

Don’t go to bed angry. Give and take both ways. It is not 50-50, it’s always 100-100.

RAY AND JAMIE HERRING will celebrate their 34th anniver-

sary on March 15. They met at Chandler High School when Jamie was 14, and Ray 16. The couple reside in Chandler. They raised two wonderful children and became grandparents to a granddaughter a few weeks ago. Ray works at National American Insurance Company and Jamie works at Shear Confidence Salon. The couple love spending time with their family. In addition, Ray golfs and enjoys sports while Jamie loves knitting and gardening. “The key to success is being married to your best friend and love of your life, the mother of your children,” say Ray. “Be flexible as possible as life goes along. There will always be life challenges, but going through it together with an open mind set is always best! No better reward than witnessing what God has in his plans for you in the future with the love of your life by your side.” Jamie continues, “Love God and everything else falls into place. Being married to my best friend says it all. My husband spoiling me helps a lot!!! Lol! He always makes me feel special. God has truly blessed me.” The Herrings will be off to Maui in April for their anniversary!

RAY & JAMIE

MARK AND KARLA KALKA will celebrate their 37th anniversary

on June 11. They met at Chandler High School at age 15. Mark made the move of his life when he pinched her as she tried to find a seat on a field trip bus! Karla, a new girl in town, politely bruised his arm in return. Oh, he was sorry all day long, eventually making it up to her when he talked her into getting a coke at Sonic! 40 years later, they reside in Chandler on the Kalka Homestead. Mark and Karla were blessed with two children and two grandchildren. Mark is the director of maintenance for Oklahoma Turnpike Authority. Karla is owner, and freight agent of Kalka Transport LLC. In addition, they run a farm together. “The secret to a great marriage is God, honesty, love and respect,” says Mark. “She’s my wife, my best friend and the mother of my children. I’m not embarrassed to show her how much I love her and would walk through fire to protect my family. “God is the foundation of our marriage,” Karla continued. We say ‘thank you’ even for the little things. We make it a point to ensure that the other feels loved. We close each day with a drive down the country roads and talk until the sun sets!”

MARK & KARLA

MICHAEL AND DEMETRA WILLIAMS will celebrate their 30th

MICHAEL & DEMET

RA

anniversary on February 25. Demetra was taking a walk and met Michael in a Shawnee Park. At the time, she was 23 and Michael was 31. After dating two years, they married on February 25, 1989. The couple raised three wonderful children and have seven adorable grandkids. Michael is retired and Demetra is a restaurant manager at Ioway Casino. One of their favorite things to do together is relaxing at home and ‘just talking’. They also spend a lot of time with their grandbabies. The secret to a successful marriage is simple for Michael. “Loving, and doing what the wife wants me to do,” he says. Demetra answered by saying, “Showing love and respect, and learning to share all things.” They plan to have a nice quiet dinner at home with each other for their upcoming anniversary!

Love...

BRIAN GOOCH and LAURIE JOHNSON / 2018 by LAURIE JOHNSON

This verse in the Bible is what true love is all about. Our story is the epitome of this verse. We all want a happy ending in love, but sometimes we are too young to know a good thing when we see it or life gets in the way. The summer of 1990 was one of the best summers of my life. I had a job offer at a Mexican restaurant in Tulsa. A friend of mine would also be working there, so I took the job. I had met a lot of new friends that summer but one particular young man stood out – Brian Gooch – dark hair and a very handsome man. He worked in the kitchen at the Mexican restaurant. We ended up spending a lot of time together. He taught me how to make guacamole and we did what most couples do – dancing, movies, eating out and concerts. We had dated for about six months when we decided to go our separate ways, yet we remained friends and stayed in contact for awhile after we broke up. We both went on about our own lives and both got married and had children. Brian had been married and divorced with two wonderful kids – Marc and Bailie and I had married and divorced with two wonderful kids – Corina and Brandon. My son was getting ready to graduate from high school in 2012 and wanted to join the Air Force. He wanted to be a jet engine mechanic. I remembered from years ago that Brian had gone to Spartan to be a jet engine mechanic. I wanted to find out if this would be a good field for my son to go into and thought I would try to find Brian on

always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres...

Facebook to ask him some questions. I sent him a friend request, he accepted and we began to talk about life and my son. We didn’t talk again until March 2017 when I sent Brian another message on Facebook, this time asking him if he was single and telling him that he looked really good in his profile picture. We ending up talking all night until 10:00 a.m. the next morning. I had told a friend I would join her for a movie that morning. Needless to say I kept falling asleep in the movie theater. Brian and I talked back and forth that day and we both really wanted to see each other again. The next day, I made the drive from Tulsa to Stroud. This was the first time I had laid eyes on him since 1990. The connection was so overwhelming! It was like we picked up right where we left off 27 years ago. We talked and caught up on anything and everything. It wasn’t long before we both knew we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together. Like any other couple, we are not perfect, but we love and respect each other. When you really love someone you always put their needs before your own. Now we are living the best of our lives together and will be getting married this year with family and friends on the beach. If I had to give anyone a word of advice, I would say, “When God has a plan for your life don’t try to stop it or stand in the way. His plan is the best plan. “ n

NOTES ALONG THE

Corridor

by RICK REILEY

Will Rogers, Beau Jennings and OKLAHOMA INDIE ROCK I don’t know how Beau Jennings hadn’t found his way to my radar screen until recently but I’m glad he did. This Norman singer/songwriter was born in Tulsa, raised in Inola and eventually earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Oklahoma. He served as the front man singer/ songwriter for the group indie rock/ Americana band Cheyenne based in Brooklyn, New York for a few years, touring the country while spending time between Austin, Texas and Brooklyn. At some point he moved to Norman and his new band the Tigers took root and began to recording and performing in area venues. . In 2015 his admiration of Will Rogers led him to ven-

ture into producing a documentary film and also writing and recording an accompanying album of songs titled ‘The Verdigris: In Search of Will Rogers.’ From his website: “...the project retraces Will Rogers’ life journey from coast to coast and retelling his story through original songs. In 2015 the album was named #1 Okie Album of 2015 by Literati Press, and in 2016 the film premiered on public television stations across the United States through American Public Television, eventually earning a nomination for a Heartland Emmy. In 2016 Jennings and his band The Tigers released the single ‘Back In Town’, which was listed as one of the best songs of the year by NPR Music. In 2017 Jennings won the international Woody Guthrie Folk Festival Songwriting Competition.”

I would most certainly those accomplishments worthy of note. The title cut, Verdigris, along with Me and Wiley are both riveting. Of course I’ve always been a fan of Will Rogers myself especially since we share a birthday and a love of the written word. DJ and I recently toured the Will Rogers Memorial and immersed ourselves in his past. Seeing his mangled typewriter from the airplane wreckage on display, along with other items from the crash, sent a shiver up my spine. As you know Rogers died in a plane crash near Point Barrow, Alaska with another famous Oklahoman, Wiley Post, in August, 1935. Thinking of all the stories he created from that machine and the fact it has lain silent for over 80 years gave me pause for silent reflection. Beau Jennings has been a fan of Rogers since childhood. The fact that the Verdigris river runs from Rogers’ home place near Oologah, through Jennings’ hometown of Inola, served as a central point of focus in the creation of the Verdigris project. In the creation of the film, Jennings retraced some of the places across the U.S. where Rogers lived, worked and perished. The Verdigris: In Search of WIll Rogers is an obvious labor of love and is a beautiful tribute from one Okie to another. But that was 2015. The other side of the coin, the Indie/Americana/rock music he produces with the Tigers, is also very appealing to me. It’s more than I would have suspected. Most of what I’ve heard of Beau Jennings and the Tigers is not necessarily music aimed primarily at the late night, hard rockin’, boot stompin’, party crowd, but is just as suitable for those who may be sitting in ones and twos at the back of the bar, to the side of the dance floor, quietly taking it all in. It’s a little Indie Rock/Americana , layered with depth, sweetness and light and filigreed with the appreciative contentment of a young family man living on the brink of doubt, wonder, and hope, tempered with certain and steadfast forward motion. This music is music to envision, enjoy, to think about, consider, contemplate, and carry with you. And of course you can also dance to it! I posed a few questions to Beau Jennings recently and he was quick to reply. RR: Where are you from? Jennings: I was born in Tulsa, but grew up in small town called Inola in northeast Oklahoma. RR: How did music find you? Was it always important to you or did it slowly develop? Jennings: I’d say one of my first real memories of music was playing with a toy General Lee car and singing the Dukes of Hazzard theme song to myself when I was maybe six or so. I loved that song so much, still do. Later my parents had a cassette tape of some vaguely hippy 70’s Christian folk songs we’d listen to in the car on the way to church, those really stuck with me, too. I

didn’t start playing guitar until a friend loaned an acoustic to me during my senior year of high school. I learned The Wall by Johnny Cash as soon as I got three chords together. RR: Was your family instrumental in your musical development? Jennings: Indirectly, sure. No one played music in my family growing up but just the particular environment I came up in, as welln as the access, or lack thereof, to music, created my own peculiar tastes and abilities… RR: How did music become part of your identity? Jennings: Once I realized how satisfying it was to write a song, I pretty much dropped other artistic pursuits – songwriting just grabbed me and wouldn’t let me go. RR: Do you recall a specific moment when you knew that music would be more to you than background noise? Jennings: I remember reading a Bob Dylan biography in college and being absolutely enthralled. It hit all the right buttons for me, and after that I was hopelessly hooked. RR: I see that architecture is part of your background. Tell me more. Jennings: I have a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Oklahoma. I practiced for a number of years and still keep a day job. RR: Tell me about the Tigers. Jennings: The Tigers is the name of my backing band. We’ve been together around five years. They’re a joy to make music with and give me an avenue to explore songs that might otherwise be straight ahead folk or country songs. With The Tigers we explore lots of sounds and directions that are more what is probably called Indie Rock or Americana. RR: What’s in your future? Jennings: To write as many good songs as I can! I have no doubt he will! Look for a new Beau Jennings and the Tigers album to be released this summer! You can find out more about Beau Jennings and his music by visiting his website: www.beaujennings.com or just Googling Beau Jennings. He is also on social media in various locations. ShaneCreekEvents by MISSY HUSTED

Conveniently located a few miles south of Prague, OK in a beautiful country setting, you’ll find Shane Creek Events. Shane Creek Events is housed in a brand new, beautiful two-story barn and is a great option for your next event! Let me tell you a little about Kelsie (Krauter) Guy, the mastermind and ramrod behind Shane Creek Events. She has a Bachelor of Science in human sciences and majored in hotel and restaurant administration at Oklahoma State University. While at OSU she worked in the stadium suites and developed a love for special events. She continued on that career path and, in the process, became engaged and wanted a special place for her wedding. Out of that search came her idea for Shane Creek Events. Kelsie shot the idea of the barn to her parents and fiancé. Her dad, Thomas Krauter, went to work. With the help of his son Chase, and soon to be son-in-law Matthew Guy, Kelsie’s idea became a reality. She said the guys did most of the heavy work on the barn while she and her mom, Sheila Krauter, did the detail work like staining all the wood, including the rafters, before installation. Kelsie and Matthew had a long engagement and a year and a half after the barn was finished, they had a gorgeous fall wedding. Now they are opening the beautiful barn up to others looking for a venue for weddings 46 THE CORRIDOR MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2019

and parties. So, are you looking for a venue for a rustic wedding that offers endless places inside and out for a wedding ceremony that will wow your guests and create beautiful memories to last a lifetime? Perhaps you just need a place to host a high school reunion, a baby shower for your best friend, a retreat, or a prom. This just may be the venue for your event! Shane Creek Events sits on 70 acres, has two ponds, open fields, trees, and two arbors. The roughly 5,000 square foot structure is home to a two-story barn with beautiful open rafters, stainless duct work, stained wood, and is climate controlled. There are two huge sliding barn doors at either end of the building that can be opened up for air flow or to let your event flow outdoors from the inside. The downstairs features a large open room that will comfortably hold 200 people, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a groom’s suite, and a kitchenette with a sink, microwave, freezer, and refrigerator. The groom’s suite is a comfortable room that will give the guys a place to relax and get ready for the big day. The kitchenette has an outside door so if you want to have a smoker or grill you can set it up on the covered patio. Upstairs you will find a landing overlooking the reception area where photographers can take pictures or a

videographer can set up to catch the footage of your wedding or party below. Also, upstairs is the bridal suite, a lovely room that would delight any bride. The room is comfy and the outdoor veiw calming. It features a half-bath that will save the bridal party trips up and down the stairs, a nice long counter with seating and mirrors for a place to do hair and makeup. Also included are comfy couches, places to hang dresses, and a mini fridge. The front of the barn has a beautiful full length covered porch and the back has two smaller covered porches. With the rental of the facility, you have access to 200 white garden chairs, round tables, ivory tablecloths, two whiskey barrels that can be used for decorations, along with some big wooden spools, burlap table runners, votives, cylinder vases, and a variety of greenery. Kelsie

{

and her crew – yes that’s the family – can provide as little or as much assistance as you want the day of your event. Unlike some facilities, they do not have specific caterers, florists, or photographers that you are required to use. However, if you need help finding services like this, Kelsie can put you in contact with some great ones from The Corridor area. So, if you are in the market for a rustic wedding with modern amenities, or if you’re looking for a place to host a shower, reunion, or other event, take a drive along The Corridor, and check out Shane Creek Events. You will be pleased. And remember, Shane Creek Events is new and the word is getting out, so stop by and check it out before the calendar is full! Delilah’s DILEMMAS

All indications were that Delilah’s cousin, Abigail, AKA the notorious Mrs. Wrigley, had been apprehended by officials upon her arrival from a European vacation. Dooby and Eli weren’t so sure, as they were unable to discover just what agency had taken her into custody. While Abigail’s elderly husband, Henry, had been released, Abigail’s whereabouts were unknown. Dooby and Eli had spent two days contacting various entities in an effort to put to rest their suspicions that Abigail had been whisked away by one of her own, that she’d planted in either a well-known or obscure organization. Their attempts proved futile. In addition, all news reports of the matter had mysteriously ceased, which increased their concerns further. Delilah had been avoiding the multitude of calls from her mother, but finally relented after a couple days and nearly two dozen attempts. Hannah hadn’t been joking when she said she would call every ten minutes until Delilah picked up the phone. Upon answering her mother’s call, Hannah spent five minutes vociferating about HER misery, and the ruin of HER position in Macon society. “I know, Mother,” Delilah said, refraining from sarcasm with immense effort. She could do this. She could be the bigger person. She could be amiable with her mother, the queen of antagonism. Or not. “Kind of eclipses my five dead husbands, don’t you think?” Delilah added, with a bit too much chuckle in her voice. “Don’t you get smart with me, Little Missy,” Hannah snapped. “You have never understood the . . . the . . . the delicate balance required to maintain the high social standing of our family. You’re just like your daddy and Nettie Mae. They never respected the Beauregard name, and neither do you.” There was a long stretch of silence as Delilah contemplated hanging up on her mother. Having been nagged by Hannah her entire life, Delilah had built up a resistance to it. But the line had been crossed when Hannah’s attacks turned to Delilah’s dad and her Aunt Nettie, the two, dear50 THE CORRIDOR MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2019

est people in Delilah’s life. “Well, are you still there?” Hannah hissed. “Yes,” Delilah said, softly. “I’m just vacillating between a hateful, hurtful response. Or, an appeal to your motherly love. But given that neither of those options have produced positive results in the past, I’m trying a new approach. Silence.” “You know,” Hannah said, with a thoroughly unconvincing quiver in her voice. “You could try for a little compassion. Some sympathy for what this is putting me through.” There was no doubt in Delilah’s mind that her mother was indeed suffering from this unfortunate turn of events. She always suffered, because she always made everything about herself. Delilah sighed and shook her head. “I’m sorry this has caused you so much grief, Mother,” Delilah said. “How are Uncle Gene and Aunt Jean holding up?” “Well, naturally they’re just devastated,” Hannah cried. “I mean, their daughter was arrested, for the love of Pete. And, on top of the embarrassing incident, they don’t know where she is. No one seems to know. And Henry! Good heavens! He’s absolutely useless.” “Is he alright?” Delilah asked, sincerely concerned that the entire ordeal might be too much for the

old guy to handle. “Oh, he’ll be fine,” Hannah said, dismissively. “He thinks someone else put those gizmos in that cane. He mentioned something about a young man they met on the beach in Greece. The men who interrogated him seemed particularly interested in that.” Delilah sat up straight, and became as alert as a hound dog at point. She reached for a pen on the old, oak desk, and rummaged quickly for a scrap piece of paper. “I don’t suppose these men questioned anyone else in the family, did they?” Delilah said, as nonchalantly as possible. “Well, of course they did,” Hannah whined. “They came to the house and interrogated your father and me. It was absolutely horrific. You can imagine how distraught I was.” “Oh, Mother! How awful!” Delilah said, with feigned, exuberant distress. Delilah’s mind was racing. How could she extract much needed information from Hannah without raising suspicion about her own involvement, or the involvement of Dooby and Eli? Boy, that would really set Hannah on a ballistic course. Delilah almost laughed at the thought. She imagined one of those cartoon characters whose eyes bug out of their heads, and smoke comes out of their ears, and their heads spin around and around. “Right?” Hannah said. “I’ve been trying to tell you.” “By chance did these men show any credentials?” Delilah asked.

“They might have,” Hannah offered. “But I was just so traumatized, I didn’t pay any attention to that.” “Do you remember their names?” Delilah urged. “Good heavens, no!” Hannah exclaimed. “What did they look like?” Delilah continued to prod. “What?” Hannah said. “Describe them,” Delilah said. “Oh, you know what those people are like,” Hannah said. “Black suit and black tie. Well-polished shoes. Short, neat hair. Dark glasses.” Annoyance was growing in her voice. “Why do you ask?” “Just curious,” Delilah said. “They were really non-descript, if you ask me,” Hannah recalled. “Except for one of them. He was very large.” “Large,” Delilah repeated. “Yes,” Hannah said. “Extraordinarily tall, and massive. He looked like he was carved from granite.” Bingo! It was a long shot, but that was a perfect description of shelly, who was employed at the same agency where Eli had worked. Shelly had also been engaged to Blaize, who had died saving Delilah’s life. Delilah ended her conversation with Hannah, and hot-footed it to the stable to share the news with Eli and Dooby. Although the pair were genuinely interested, and agreed to verify the information, their enthusiasm could scarcely be measured. Upon returning to the house, Delilah decided that far too

much time had passed since the last poker game with her friends. So, she made the calls, set the day and time, and composed her grocery list. It was Friday evening, just before7:00, when Patty pulled up the drive at the Royal Flush Ranch. Patty was in her mid-sixties. She was intelligent, witty, and completely classy. She was soft spoken, but stern when she needed to be. She was a bit on the tall side, and slim. Her hair was gray and shoulder length. Odie was close behind. Odie was in her mid-forties. She had an infectious laugh and an unequaled charm. She was average height, full-figured, and had short, black hair. Karon had been at the ranch since late afternoon. She had worked three, half-days that week, and though her movements were still slow, she was maneuvering much better, and without so many complaints (a feat, in itself, worthy of praise). Delilah surmised that Karon had finally accepted that there was nothing she could do but deal with it. Patty, Odie, Karon, Dooby, Gus, and Eli took their seats as Delilah placed a large tureen of Swedish Meatballs and homemade egg noodles on the table. Marietta came behind with steamed asparagus, and a huge basket of crescent rolls. It was primarily catch-up conversation during dinner. And when the subject of Abigail was broached, there was little more to be shared than what was known three days prior.

The dishes were cleared from the table and taken to the kitchen, where the men set about cleaning. Because Marietta didn’t want to play poker, she was banished to the living room where she would watch television with the guys once they’d completed their kitchen tasks. The extra leaves were removed from the dining table, and Patty, Odie, Karon, and Delilah quickly settled in with the first hand. All hands were nickel ante, penny bet. “Seven up, Ladies,” Odie said, dealing two cards down and one card up to each player. “If a seven is dealt up, that player gets to call a wild card.” Delilah won the first hand; a whopping sixty-three cents. Five more hands were played, and the winnings evenly divided. At 8:30, Delilah called a halt to the games and went to the kitchen to retrieve dessert. She brought the Chocolate Pound Cake to the dining room, sat it on the side-board, cut it into pieces, and served everyone. When dessert was finished, and the small plates were stacked on the side-board next to what little remained of the cake, the dealing resumed. Half-way through the first hand, headlights could be seen coming up the drive. Eli was quick to head to the back door, and moments later he was showing Charlie, the Lincoln County Sheriff, into the dining room. “What’s this I hear about some guy stalking you?” Eli asked, his tone far from playful.

Delilah had completely forgot about Mr. Creepy, what with all the Abigail excitement. And now she thought about it, perhaps she over-reacted a tad about the stranger at her door. “I completely forgot to tell you,” Delilah said, with a giggle. Charlie pointed at the center of the table. “You realize what you’re doing here is illegal,” Charlie said, seriously. “What? Playing cards?” Delilah asked. “Gambling,” Charlie said. “I want to know more about this guy,” Eli demanded. Delilah barked out a laugh while the others raked in the coins and cards, and tried to hide them. “What!” Delilah said, jokingly. “Are you going to arrest us?” Charlie pulled handcuffs from his hip pocket and held them up high for all to see. n
