Welcome 2015, and several new advertisers! Please note we added several new stores to the Quick Guide to Antiques & Auctions and shifted the auctions onto this page. Welcome Modern Mantiques, Repeats, and welcome back Main Street America II, now under new management. We also have a new full page advertiser, a furniture designer on page 9. Make an appointment to see one or both of Jan’s two showrooms. With 4 Quilt Shows in this issue and the Coca Cola Convention, I was delighted to discover and use a portion of a vintage Coke ad depicting young ladies quilting. Not only does it cover quilting and Coke, but it has the retro/ vintage thing going on and that works for our antiques shops, shows and auctions, especially the spectacular Morphy Auction (formerly Victorian Casino Antiques) and the LVABCC 50th year celebration show. Check our events calendar on this page for those dates and the pages the ads are on. If you are a show vendor, don’t miss the article on Page 15. It tells about all the upcoming spring festivals and getting your applications in for them. I just got exciting news from the Boulder City Chamber of Commerce: There will be a new addition to the Spring Jamboree line up of venues.... A Rock, Mineral and Gem Show! If your New Year’s resolutions include starting or improving your eCommerce business, sign up to reap valuable ideas and motivation at the upcoming seminar advertised on page 14. People from all over the country come to attend this, so if you live here, you can save the flight and hotel expense! As usual, an encouraging word about shopping with our advertisers... you are going to buy your Valentine gifts somewhere, so why not support local businesses, especially those who provide The Country Register! They are ready to help you find the perfect gifts for your sweethearts... Jewelry, Chocolate, Candles, Wine, Vintage Valentines, cuddly Alpaca gifts... Check them out and you will need to look no further! Many of them like Ruben’s Woodcraft, Epic Artware, Restoreologie, and Sew Magic, will customize something for you too, so get with them ahead of time. A gift certificate slipped into a card with a ‘Let’s go shopping’ or to dinner coupon works too. Check out page 20 for an easy idea to take that coupon to the next level! Thank you for reading and using The Country Register! Please remember to tell the advertisers you found them through their ads! That way they know how to find you!

COCA COLA COLLECTORS CONVENTION RETURNS TO LAS VEGAS by Glena Dunn

The Great Get Together is the convention of the western chapters of the Coca Cola Collectors Club. The convention is in it’s 37th year of bringing together the members from all over the US and around the world. Always held during the first part of February; the 2015 dates are February 5th through 8th. This year, members will gather once again at Palace Station, located at 2411 W. Sahara Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89102. Previous conventions held in Las Vegas occurred at The Tropicana and Plaza Station and otherwise were held in California. During the convention there are several events including exhibitions, auctions, swap meet, and a banquet. Coca Cola collectors from all over come to share their love of collecting the American advertising icon, and to buy, sell and trade Coca Cola advertising items. The swap meet will be on Saturday, February 7th and open to the public from 10:00 am-1:00 pm. Admission is free. To attend the convention, you must be a member of The Coca-Cola Collectors Club. For information on joining go to: www. cocacolaclub.org The convention and swap meet is a great venue to search for that elusive Coca Cola collectible. Items can be found from the late 1800’s to the present day. Coca Cola epitomizes the good old days of America, when colorful Coca Cola advertising was seen everywhere including the sides of buildings. If you like to reflect back on those times be sure to drop in. This year’s contact is Mark Lawrence 951-351-2422 or marklrcta@aol.com

Estate/Antique Auction & Collectibles Show 5

LOCAL RESOURCE FOR THE ANTIQUES TRADE

Over the years, The Country Register of Southern Nevada has evolved into a comprehensive antiques trade guide serving our area, differing from the other editions of TCR published in the United States and Canada. Here is a look back at why and how it became what it is today: First of all, we had no local trade publication. When I moved here, all I could find was the phone book, and once I did find a shop, the owner was not willing to be helpful in telling me where there were more. So there was a need for an antiques guide, especially before Craigs List! Secondly, as ‘country’ decorating, scrapbooking and craft malls went out of vogue, many of the shops The Country Register had originally served disappeared. Some survived by shifting into antiques, my shop Back in Thyme included. (I was thankful for the name I had chosen!) As I got deeper into antiques, I needed to reach out to those interested in them. So we added a map with all the antiques shops and malls. Most saw the value in it and in cooperating for our mutual benefit and the public’s. We all quickly met new customers from the shared traffic our network created. Finally, there was a need to create more interest in antiques. With homes in our area being newer, people didn’t think antiques “looked right” in them. I dropped most of the ‘filler’ articles provided on the publishers’ forum, and wrote about displaying antiques in the decor of homes and businesses. Articles on collecting categories, the value of older, better-made furniture and creatively repurposing old unique items replaced articles that weren’t as suited to our unique climate and lifestyle. Quilt shops, arts & crafts shows and seasonal festivals remained a good fit, people who like antiques generally enjoy those too or vice versa. Auction houses came on board as the economy plummeted and people had to downsize their homes and heirlooms. Then came other advertisers such as antique shows, appraisers and estate liquidators, antiques repair services and the ads for the dealers and collectors looking to buy. We became a multi-faceted network supporting and supported by each other! The Country Register ‘drives traffic’. Our amazing advertisers take it from there, giving our readers the great experiences that keep them checking out more of their fellow advertisers. Nearby businesses benefit too. With TCR exposure brought by just a few at the onset, Boulder City blossomed and became a destination for antiquing and dining too! Now it is supported by many more appreciative advertisers.

LAS VEGAS ANTIQUE BOTTLES & COLLECTIBLES CLUB CELEBRATES 50 YEARS by Glena Dunn

How many clubs are still around and even have founding members active after fifty years? I might have to take the opportunity to be a ‘fly on the wall’ at the January club meeting because members will be remininsing about the early years of the club in lieu of the usual program on a collecting category. This should be a really fun meeting as they revisit the days when they actually went out and dug for bottles before all the legal restrictions were put in place. The club meets on the first Wednesday of the month at the Elks Club on Charleston and Hinson in Las Vegas. The public is welcome to attend club meeting to see what the club is about before deciding to join. Recent meetings and additional planning meetings have been spent gearing up for their famous annual Show & Sale. Held at Texas Station Casino, the vendors and patrons enjoy convenient accommodations, and there is plenty of parking and security overnight for the two day show. Since it is February 14th and 15th this year, bring your sweetheart for the most memorable Valentines Day you’ve ever enjoyed.

Whether or not you join in as a dealer, you should save the date and plan to attend. This annual show affords the opportunity to see and buy things you will have never seen before, and to learn about them from expert collectors. You can pick the brains of experts in their field, get them to watch for the things you want in their networks. EBay has made collectibles more readily available overall, but some rare and special things never reach the marketplace. Older collectors don’t want to turn loose of their treasures to just anyone. They would rather wait, hoping to meet someone who has a genuine love for what they love and feel they have met the person who will most closely enjoy their collection the way they have. They might not be exhibiting at the show, but every dealer at the show will know people with amazing collections. So go to the show to learn, to buy and to network as well!

GARY FRICK 1958-2014

We are sorry to announce that the antiques community and the affiliation of used books sellers have lost Gary Frick. The owner of Academy Fine Books on E. Charleston passed away quietly between the holidays shortly after a cancer diagnosis. Gary turned his passion for books into a new career when he opened his own shop in the mid 90s after cab driving here and in Denver for eighteen years. Those familiar with the shop in Antique Square loved to browse the endless shelves to make their selections. Some of us have many to remember him by. Gary’s vast inventory seldom disappointed a specific search... he knew just where to look in the labyrinth of his bookstore. The shop wasn’t limited to books either. Stopping by frequently, meant a chance to see other treasures as they turned up and decorated the area in which he did his research and pricing. You may have seen Gary on the TV news only a few months prior, being interviewed after he realized the young couple who killed the police officers at lunch had made a commotion in his shop the day before. Gary’s opinions that differed from theirs and apparently they did not like that!

Great Stuff! Great Prices! Great Service!

NEW ANTIQUE MALL FULLY LEASED

The Boulevard Mall at 3528 South Maryland Parkway is the home to the latest addition to the Las Vegas Antique and Collectibles marketplace. Hall of Antiquities is the brain child of retired archaeologist and broadcaster Dr. Peter J. Shield PhD and Dr. Lonnie Hammargren, Nevada’s well known ex Lt. Governor. As such, it boasts a number of unique features that are not usually found in the conventional ‘Antique Mall’ . A large area at the rear of the hall is dedicated to house the Dr. Hammargren Exhibition Hall and Art Gallery. This area features items from both Dr. Hammargren and Dr. Shield’s personal collections as well as rotating displays from visiting artists and exhibits such as Magical Memorabilia from Las Vegas Mystifier Dixie Dooley. In our previous issue, their initial ad included a call for dealers. They are pleased to report that they are now full, and have started a waiting list for those wanting a space. A licensed minister, Dr. Shield has reserved the use of an area in the Egyptian themed facility for a venue to conduct weddings in the near future. The Boulevard Mall was recently purchased by Sansone properties and is undergoing extensive renovation. It offers plenty of undercover parking and all the amenities associated with a major shopping mall location. The Hall of Antiquities is located in the East Wing behind Macy’s. You can learn more at their web site http://hallofantiquities.com

January/February/March 2015 ‘INDIAN’ JEWELRY FACTORIES

11

by Glena Dunn

In the last decade, a substantial amount of what is offered as “Authentic Native American Jewelry” in the southwest has been made or at least pre-fabricated in China, Taiwan, the Philippines, India, and Mexico. Imported knock-offs hurt Native American craftspeople as well as legitimate Native American jewelry sellers of both the old and the new. Not only is it harmful to the Native American jewelry market, it is wrong because people aren’t getting what they think they are paying for. Additionally, there are places in the U.S. southwest where Navajo people work in factories to mass-produce or finish off the jewelry that was prefabricated overseas so that it can be labeled “Authentic Indian Jewelry”. The casual buyer cannot tell genuinely handcrafted jewelry from machine made, or genuine turquoise from plastic or that which is cut from reconstituted turquoise block. Some better imitations can fool even those with more expertise, so considerable research and caution is advised. Consider how many stores are stocked with rows of trays of similar-looking jewelry in our area, let alone the southwest, and ask yourself, “Where is all this coming from?” Are there really Native American silversmiths turning out thousands of trays of the same popular style rings in various sizes? An elderly Navajo silversmith told me that all she has to do is look at the hands of sellers peddling jewelry on blankets in her area to know that they are not silversmiths, and then showed me her hands. She said she wished shop-owners cared more about what they stock and were more careful about who they buy from. After checking out Back in Thyme, she said she approved of and appreciated how we handle old Native American jewelry. Her last name was Garcia. If you recognize that name as one of the most highly regarded Navajo silversmithing families, you can imagine how honored I felt!

On average, our authentic old Native American sterling pieces are priced at ten dollars a gram. Pieces set with many stones are a little higher, as well as historic pieces or those with rare turquoise from limited or long-closed mines. We could price it at twice as much like some of our competitors do with their lightweight imports and then give 30% off, but we choose not to play that game. Before you buy, learn and compare. We are happy to show you the difference. We keep about 20 import pieces handy for sideby-side comparison. We also keep back issues of The Country Register with other informative articles I have on Native American jewelry.

May 2nd and 3rd is also the weekend of Boulder City’s Spring Jamboree. Produced by the Boulder City Chamber of Commerce, it is Boulder City’s longest running arts, crafts and family festival. There is also a vintage/collectibles section, called Antiques in the Park. It is only about ten years old, but has earned a solid foundation of repeat vendors, with many saying it is their best show of the year. Originally founded by Bill Smith and sponsored by The Country Register of Southern Nevada, it quickly became established as “Southern Nevada’s Largest Outdoor Antiques Show” with our exposure to the local antiques trade and collecting community. The show’s noteriety and draw has been expanded further over the years through additional promotion in The Country Register of Arizona, The Antique Register and Today’s Vintage reaching audiences in five states. Antiques have proven to be a quite a draw for Spring Jamboree, just as the antiques shops are for the town. When people come out to go antiquing, they also dine and enjoy other businesses as well. To sell at any of the venues (including a commercial area) at the Boulder City Chamber of Commerce Spring Jamboree, go to www.springjamboree.com and click on applications at the top of the page. Then click on ‘General Applications’, which will open information for the three types of vendor parks and the criteria and cost to be in each. Keep scrolling, the actual application is the third page. There is a $25 late fee IF there is space available after March 20th. Breaking News from the chamber! There is to be a new venue addition: A Rock, Mineral & Gem Show! The application form on the website will be reflecting that soon. After Spring Jam, comes the Best Dam Barbecue Challenge, May 22 & 23. You are probably not going to enter the barbecue contest (if you are, you already know it) but you might want to show a classic car or be considered for one of the vendor spots. No matter what, save the date because you don’t miss out on this, another favorite weekend in Boulder City. Be sure to go online and register early to get your first choice of the amazing instructional classes at the Glass Craft & Bead Expo. This is an opportunity to learn how to use new products, tools and techniques from those who have mastered them. These classes fill up fast so don’t delay!

January/February/March 2015 QUILT REMNANT PROJECTS Got an old quilt that is too far gone to use on the bed or hang on the wall? Whether it is all-over wear (usually from frequent and/or improper laundering) or just damage in some areas, there is probably still something left to be enjoyed in it. I like to think that the hundreds of hours someone infused into it decades ago, gave it such remarkable longevity. First of all, consider repair especially if the damage is focused in one area or even all the edges. I still sympathize with my friend’s horror when we unloaded their moving truck and she discovered her husband had used her wedding gift from her grandmother had been used as a moving pad. The quilt had a jagged hole where the sharp corner of a PARTICLE BOARD desk had worn through it. But grandma had enough fabric remaining to invisibly repair it. Ruling out repair, rules IN a number of sewing craft options, such as pillows, upholstery of a chair or ottoman, placemats, ornaments and stockings. I know this because I have a pile of ‘cutter quilts’ that I acquired with visions of creating charmingly worn quilted Christmas stockings to sell in my shop. Once it was obvious that they were not going to get reconfigured in time, I googled ‘damaged quilt projects’ and was delighted to find many there are many other less seasonal options. Even if I do make some stockings, there will be pieces left over that can still be used for small crafts like ornaments and these prim tags. Or, someone reading this could say to themselves, “That sounds fun, I wonder if she would sell me some of those quilts?”

Quilt Shops 17 The answer would be “yes”. I get big ideas, and forget that I have little time to implement them. So I would be happy to disperse some of the quilts along with these ideas! The quilts will be at my shop, Back in Thyme in Boulder City. Just 25 to 100 dollars, depending on color, pattern and how much wear or damage they have. I also have a couple of yo-yo quilts that aren’t damaged at all. They are very colorful. Even though they aren’t damaged, I think they make great ‘parts’...you can break them down into strips for trim or banners, or squares for pillows. You can even carefully cut the thread joints to make capital letters... two or three initials or a whole name framed on a white mat is awesome!

One of these days I will accomplish my PHD in quilting... (Projects Half Done)

UPCYCLING OLD BOOKS The old books that have been going to landfill for decades are now being utilized as crafting material in creative projects. First though, do a quick check on abebooks.com, to make sure you don’t have something rare and valuable in your hands, especially if the title page indicates it is a first edition. Once you know your book is ‘good to go’, evaluate the possibilities of its various parts or keeping it intact. Leather-bound volumes are decorator-worthy, just the way they are. Simply tied with aged ribbon, twine or old shoelace, a graduated stack rests beautifully on a shelf or desk. Or tuck in a small bouquet of dried herbs to accent the patina and blend in with a grouping. You can also use them without further embellishment in vignettes to add texture, height or elevation and ‘the passage of time’. They are in keeping with, but won’t compete with more detailed elements.

This challenge is to recognize and honor the sacrifices that are made by our country's military families. They face adversity and endure hardships; yet all too often their troubles go unnoticed. We also honor those Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines who must miss holidays, birthdays, and family moments in far-away distant lands. It is for the family members who keep the house running while their husband, wife, son or daughter is away. It is for the children who dearly miss their deployed parent, brother, sister, uncle, or aunt. We say thank you to the men and women who have volunteered to serve our country and preserve our freedom.

If you have a beautifully illustrated old children’s book, save the those pages for framing. Match a color on the page to paint an old or new frame and it will stand out. Sometimes there is a poem or paragraph on the facing page that makes a good pairing on the wall in a child’s room. The cover can become a unique binding for a new scrapbook or learning book for a grandchild. No matter what the content, faded pages with yellowed edges are great for over printing Bible verses or other sayings, and even names or monograms. Attach a series of single letters printed on old pages to twine to make a banner. Old dictionary pages with their quirky little drawn illustrations are great crafting elements. You can even look up words that relate to your project. Use them as a back drop in a shadow box or matting for a photo or art. Save the scraps for making a tattered paper wreath. Leave it plain or embellished with glitter for an even more vintage look. One of our advertisers, The White Porch in Boulder City, has made wreaths and angel wings with pages whirled into cones. The angel wings had soft white feathers tucked in among the cones which blended beautifully. This collage of ideas for repurposing old books is from one of my favorite Facebook page follows. Started in just 2011, it has almost 15,000 followers! The name “Knick of Time” is so clever and perfect for what the page is about. It speaks both to the evidence of time and usage on old objects and also to the idea of salvaging something to be reused before it is forever gone. Angie also has a wonderful blog linked to her Facebook page, knickoftime.net. If you follow The Country Register of Southern Nevada’s Facebook page, you will have seen quite a few ideas shared from both her page and blog. Her creative repurposing and upcycling ideas using easily acquired items are perfect for our readership. I love to use our Facebook page to bring you more of the creative ideas you enjoy in each issue. Besides seasonal crafting and decorating ideas, there are recipes and ‘hacks’ that make cleaning and organizing easier. I share posts from our advertisers too, so that you are aware of their new product, sales and other updates in between our printings. It is a great tool for extending what The Country Register is all about bringing to southern Nevadans!

January/February/March 2015 QUILT SHOW ETIQUETTE

Quilt Shows & Services 19

by Glena Dunn

With four quilt shows advertised in this issue, it is a good time to bring up what usually isn’t allowed at these events. Most of those interested in attending will already be well-aware and what the concerns are. But since this was all new to me not that many years ago, it seems there could be others that will benefit from this basic overview of typical quilt show etiquette. Each shows rules are a little different. Some more lenient, some more stringent. It can depend on the number of people they have available to moniter the displays or the size of the crowds. But even in one-on-one situations, respect and care for the quilters work must be a priority. • Do not touch a quilt with your bare hands. White glove hostesses are usually available to show the back of quilts. • No food or drinks allowed. • No Smoking • If children are allowed, keep a close eye on them. It is especially tempting for them to reach out and touch the colorful inviting quilts! • Photos of quilt entries may or may not be permitted. Sometimes it is for personal use only. Be sure to ask at the door if it is not posted. • Photographing pattern covers and made up examples in the retail areas is never permitted. This is to protect the rights of the designers. It is a always a good idea to go to a show’s website and see what other restrictions they may have in place, such as rolling bags, before you arrive with them.

Remember: People will see your quilts long after you are gone... NOT your housework! Found on familyeverafterblog.com

SOUTHERN NEVADA AMANDA’S FAMILY-FRIENDLY CRAFT IDEAS Our posts on The Country Register of Southern Nevada’s Facebook page include seasonal craft projects that are inexpensive fun ideas that can be made with supplies usually on hand. Most have a wide range of age involvement, in both the crafting and in the appeal of the results. (In other words, kids of all ages can make something for other kids or grandma!) Many of these ideas are shared from a page called ‘Crafts by Amanda’, that has earned a following approaching 300,000! Amanda Formaro’s profile: She is a mother of four in Wisconsin whose creative bent led to developing herself as a professional craft designer. She remains Chief Editor for FamilyCorner.com, a website she created in 1997 and sold. She also worked for Disney’s Kaboose.com as their craft expert. Her projects have been published in numerous print and online magazines, and she now designs for Deco Art.

If you want more recipes and creative ideas like you see in each issue of

The Country Register of Southern Nevada, We have great news for you... there is more!

Far more than we can print! For daily doses of creative, fun ideas involving vintage repurposing, quilting, recipes and more... Just ’Like’ us on Facebook !

Amanda’s creative ideas are perfect for young families who enjoy doing projects together or making things for each other and friends. Isn’t it amazing how just the heart-shaped bit of tissue paper tacked over the gift description takes this concept to a new level by its presentation? January/February/March 2015 2015 - TIME TO START ANEW —

by Georgia Ritter

2015 is here, presenting us with a clean slate to work with once again. As we reflect on the activities, encounters, and changes of 2014, we can redirect our plans and activities anew for ourselves and our families. I realize that the slate is probably only clean in some areas, but the chance to clear away extra “clutter” is an option for most of us, if we implement those New Year’s resolutions. I start thinking of what I want to put on the new resolution list somewhere around Thanksgiving—after all, that day helps us examine what we are thankful for. When I get my new calendars and start creating plans for the year ahead I always get a little excited by the opportunities of a new year. My initial planning for the year is to find time to enjoy my family, friends, and those new to my life. There are events that will be priorities in each of our lives. The time allocated on your calendar may vary depending on the timing and grandeur of the events. Summer weddings are a great time to extend your plans to include extra visiting and perhaps sight-seeing before or after. As we and our families age, we realize how precious our time is with each other. These gatherings should be fully enjoyed so that the memories will remain with us. I urge you to play board games, take walks, or participate in other exploration rather than individually play various electronic devices. Record others’ annual special dates on your calendar so that they aren’t overlooked. Each of us is warmed by others taking note of our birthdays and anniversaries. The way you do it is up to you, but I suggest a card for older generations (it can be read over and over). Phone calls can become wonderful visits. There are e cards, email, texting, and Facebook to name just a few other alternatives.

SHOP LOCAL. EAT LOCAL. SPEND LOCAL. ENJOY LOCAL. It Takes YOU to Start the Trend! Support the local businesses who support the area where you live, work & play. Easy Basil Cream Chicken 1 hot cooked and drained fettuccine 1 lb boneless skinless chicken breast, cubed 1 cup minced onion 3/4 lb fresh mushrooms, sliced 2 tablespoons oil 3 tablespoons butter 3 tablespoons flour 2 cups chicken broth 1 tablespoon chicken bouillon 1 cup whipping cream (I substitute whole milk for half) 2 tablespoons minced fresh basil 1/4 teaspoon pepper Saute chicken, onions, and mushrooms in oil for 4 minutes. In large saucepan, melt butter; stir in flour until smooth. Add chicken broth, boullion and cream. Stir in basil and pepper. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes. Combine with the chicken mixture. Serve over fettuccini. (I have also served it on potatoes.)

Henderson 21 By showing you remember, you have the opportunity to brighten someone’s day and you both will benefit from that act, so don’t let it pass without action on your part! If there is no special occasion, but you find your thoughts going toward someone, call them and make the connection.. In January, holiday tear-down can typically leave the house feeling empty. Time for a new houseplant or two and to start plans for Valentine’s Day in February. Stretch your Valentine celebration by making a special dinner the preceding weekend or baking cookies to share. Presidents’ Day follows, so there will be a vacation day from school—another reason for children to celebrate. March brings thoughts of gardening, spring, and St Patrick’s Day. That is a day when you can pretend to be Irish just to share in the fun. Those of us who are Irish celebrate with parades, corned beef, and green in abundance. Here, at Le Melange GIFTS and COLLECTIBLES, we expand into our courtyard for the comfort of our many guests. (We serve corned beef and cabbage to our customers that day.) That is an easy way to share time with your friends and family. We are always ready to share our recipes with you, just ask! Remember this New Year is your “do over,” so enjoy. Take time for yourself, your family, and friends. The resulting benefits can be shared with the rest of the world, making it a better place. Ed. Note: Georgia has owned her delightful shop for 36 years now and she keeps Christmas season decorations on display all year long. Throughout the year she and her staff enjoy going the extra mile with unique selections and warm displays that will help you find ‘just the thing’ for the difficult person on your list. Welcome to Boulder City!

As little as 20 minutes away from many locations in Henderson and Las Vegas, Boulder City offers an escape from the traffic and pace of those cities. Rather than turning left, come on through the town’s single traffic light. The road will still lead to the dam, AND with a scenic overlook of the lake along the way. Feel yourself unwind as Nevada Highway gently curves into Nevada Way. As you can see from our map on the back page, once you park you can get out and stroll the area of unique shops and eateries of the Old Town District. Many buildings retain the original Art Deco arched arcades on their frontage and the shop keepers can tell you about the history of their buildings, such as the old laundry building that now houses the enormous craft and antiques emporium, Goatfeathers. Boulder City ArtScape’s statuary placed intermittently along the sidewalks is a tour in itself, with plaques naming the pieces and artists. There are murals adorning some buildings, mostly painted by Connie Ferraro over several years. Many speak to the history of the town that built the Hoover Dam. Antique shops (see article on the next page), unique diners and restaurants, an old fashioned candy and ice cream shop are some of the businesses that will make your visit relaxing and enjoyable. Even getting a hair cut or dropping into the hardware store has a feeling of days-gone-by in Boulder City. Many visitors delightedly comment on the small town ‘Main Street’ feel that reminds them of the town where they grew up.

by Glena Dunn In recent years, “going to Boulder City” has become synonymous with “going antiquing”. With the introduction of an annual outdoor antiques show and consistent exposure through The Country Register, the historic town has attracted more antique-type businesses and evolved into a day trip destination for those who love to treasure hunt. What you can find runs from rare and pricey specialties such as the original pedal cars and authentic old Native American jewelry at Back in Thyme to fun and affordable ‘Farm Chic’ at The White Porch. Over a dozen themed rooms at Antique Depot make it easy to focus what you collect, while exploring the meandering layout of the cavernous Goatfeathers offers delightful discovery at every turn. Everything at Younique is ‘unique’ and selected by Judi for its charm and gift-ability! Closely related (and extremely popular) are the salvage and upcycling shops with painted furniture and clever ideas for repurposing and decorating. Check out Restoreologie where Pam demonstrates how her own brand of chalk paint can update tired old furniture, and Epic Artware, which specializes in artistic upcycling. Owner/Artist Eric Liens makes one-of-a-kind lamps out of vintage items such as car parts, cameras, typewriters... he has a knack for attaching a light bulb and coordinating a shade to virtually anything that is visually interesting! Naturally, with all this strolling, shopping and inspiration absorption one gets hungry, so there are now twice as many unique eateries to sustain you as there were ten years ago. Check out our Boulder City Dining Guide on page 27 for our breakfast, lunch and dinner recommendations. Places to dine are indicated in red numbers on our back page Boulder City map. When using the map to find your way around Boulder City, you will find many other shops and eateries in between our advertisers that are located on the map. They too will welcome your visit and help to round out your day or weekend in Boulder City. With the new by-pass to be completed over the next two years, the destination identity The Country Register has helped to build and promote for Boulder City is going to be vital in keeping the expanded business community alive. A relaxing, retro day trip for Las Vegas and Henderson residents and visitors attracts a broad customer base including multi generations and lifestyles.

January/February/March 2015 Business owners, the Boulder City Chamber of Commerce and committees the city appoints will be evaluating what has worked in attracting those who enjoy what the town has to offer, and how to attract more of them. There is already some discussion of what could be added to enhance the Boulder City experience to replace the inevitable loss of tourist traffic due to the distancing of the interstate. We realize that with all Boulder City offers, it is impossible to patronize every advertiser every time you visit. But please stop by a few of the numbers on the map, and remind those owners that the welcoming invitation they help to extend every issue of The Country Register is noticed. This paper could not exist without our cooperative network advertisers, and Boulder City plays an important part. We want to make sure that this vibrant community doesn’t suffer with the by-pass. The ongoing patronage of our appreciative readership will help ensure that Boulder City remains intact for Southern Nevadans to enjoy in the years ahead. Next time you are planning to head to Boulder City, why not invite a friend or co-worker along and show them around? Enjoy their delight as they discover what is in the little town just over the hill. They will probably think of people they want to share it’s experiences with as well!

CRAFT COTTAGE

Twenty-five years ago Marlis Walls opened her Craft Cottage when she retired as a contracting officer with the Bureau of Reclamation. She believes her shop may be the oldest retail store still in business in Boulder City, aside from Ace Hardware. She remembers a bus station on the corner of Nevada Way when she opened, and busses of tourists being dropped off to sight-see and tour the shops every day. Things got pretty quiet after that, but recently opened shops around hers have brought a new energy to Colorado Street. With her daughter, Annette Frazier’s help, she is able to keep up with the increase in traffic and still find time for the knitting she loves to work on in between customers. Annette’s crafting is more diversified and when you visit, you will see inspiring examples she has made with the supplies on hand in the shop.

1326 Wyoming St. Boulder City, NV

To celebrate their 25th anniversary with their valued customers, they are extending a 25% discount on purchases of craft and knitting supplies. The sale runs from January 1st until January 16th.

THE DAM SHORT FILM FESTIVAL Isn’t this year’s poster stunning? At the top of our back page Boulder City map, you can see a different configuration of the artwork for the eleventh year of the Dam Short Film Festival. For the several years that we have been publishing ads and articles for the festival, I have marveled at the artwork that’s brought forth for the advertising. Several years I have thought that they had surely exhausted the potential for anything to equal, let alone exceed what I was currently admiring, and then the next year, I was amazed at yet another new and fresh approach. When they introduced this year’s poster on their Facebook page, they stated that if you have a pair of ChromaDepth glasses, you can actually view it in 3D! Somewhere I know I have some, and I am going to find them and be even more impressed. Another aspect of the Dam Short Film Festival that I notice and really appreciate is the type of traffic to Boulder City it generates. Unlike the predictable mission-oriented flow of families with strollers and/or dogs that we often see with the annual park events, this crowd is without baggage, streamlined and sensory, younger, alert to their surroundings, taking it all in, truly able to experience Boulder City. You get the feeling that they are not only enjoying themselves, but that they will be sharing their good impressions of the town with those they know. And that is exciting.

The rest of this article is taken from Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia, that is a wealth of information when you need it. I was not aware of much of this and thought our readers might find it interesting as well. The Dam Short Film Festival is a film festival held annually in Boulder City, Nevada, typically in early February. Lee Lanier and Anita Lanier are the original co-founders of the festival. The festival is organized by the Dam Short Film Society, a non-profit 501(c)3 Nevada corporation. Past festival sponsors have included The Art Institutes, the Nevada Film Office, the Hacienda Hotel and Casino, and Cirque du Soleil. The Society receives annual grants from the National Endowment for the Arts via the Nevada Arts Council. Started in 2005, the Dam Short Film Festival only screens films that run between 1 and 40 minutes. Generally, there are between 100 and 140 short films programmed each year. Although most of the festival shorts are submitted by student, independent, and other “up-and-coming” filmmakers, the stiff competition means many of the shorts have been produced involving film professionals. These have included Oscar-winner Louis Gossett Jr. in “Window,” Oscar-winner, Tom Hanks, William Shatner, and Michael York in “Why Shakespeare?”, the late Bela Lugosi narrating an animation based on the Edgar Allan Poe classic “The TellTale Heart”, Francesco Quinn in “The Gnostic”, and Robert Wagner and Lori Singer in “Little Victim “. The short films are arranged into thematic programs, such as international drama, crime drama, dramedy, science-fiction, horror, comedy, avant-garde, underground, and animation. In addition to the regular screenings, the festival presents special showcases and retrospectives; for example, the 2009 event featured a showcase dedicated to documentary filmmaker Jay Rosenblatt while 2008 included a program dedicated to animator Jim Blashfield. The festival also presents parties, mixers, filmmaker panels, and Q&A sessions with attending filmmakers. In 2008, the Festival moved to the historic 400-seat Boulder Theatre. The Theatre was built in 1931 and is currently owned by Desi Arnaz Jr. and his wife Amy. 2014 marked the 10th anniversary of the festival. At present, Lee Lanier serves as the Dam Short Film Society’s executive director while John LaBonney serves as festival director. The Society has a working board of directors that varies from 4 to 6 members. For updates on the Dam Short Film Festival, follow them on Facebook or check in on their website: www.damshortfilm.org. And to see more of the festival’s past artwork, do a search of google images. It seems like last year I was able to view them all together, but I couldn’t retrace my steps when I was trying to find a link for that to include in this article.

A Little History Boulder City was designed and built by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the Six Companies to support the construction of Hoover Dam between 1931 and 1935, during the Great Depression. The Old Town District’ arched walkways exhibit the same Art Deco influence seen in the dam’s graceful design. The town was built in a triangle, with the Bureau at the top, and everything in walking distance. To this day, this part of town has a traditional feel, with parks and gazebo, city hall, post office, the historic theater and hotel...A small town atmosphere with most shop owners on hand, and locals in the diners, discussing the latest weather and town politics.
