Strategic plan sets direction for District 15’s future Troy Ferguson ISD 15 Acting Superintendent

Paul Neubauer ISD 15 Director of Curriculum and Instruction

Independent School District 15 (ISD 15) is in the preliminary stages of creating a strategic plan that will impact the future of the school community. This plan will provide direction to make great decisions and establish the framework for action as ISD 15 moves forward to serve students, staff and the school community. The strategic plan will include the District’s mission, outcomes, action plans and measurement tools to chart progress. In order to create a strategic plan that best reflects the hopes and dreams of this community, participation by community members committed to the future success of ISD 15 schools is essential. The participation of students, parents, community members and staff is necessary to chart a course for the future of our schools. Community members are invited to be part of the strategic planning process by

serving on one or more of the following essential teams: Core Planning Team Members will contribute to the creation of a long-term vision and plan for our schools. Action Planning Team Members will create the specific steps to accomplish the strategic plan. Measurement Design Team Members will develop the tools to monitor and assess our progress. Team members will work together during the 2014-15 school year and the results of this collaboration will be recommended to the ISD 15 School Board next May. Participation will require a commitment of time and energy. Applicants need to review the obligation necessary for each team. To be considered for a team, an application form needs to be submitted (see page 9). An online form can be found at www.isd15. org/plan. Applications will be reviewed by a committee of district administrators and three school board members for consideration and final

How to get Youth Frontiers builds community, inspires character your teacher’s license renewed Susan Harris

Communications & Marketing Manager, Youth Frontiers

Carol Krupke ISD 15 CELC

Independent School District 15 Continuing Educational Licensing Committee (CELC) relicenses teachers in the state of Minnesota. If a teacher wants to renew their license they need to turn in their continuing education units every year. The CELC is made up of five licensed teachers, one community member and one administrator. The committee meets four times a year at the Central Services Center in St. Francis. The dates for the 2014-15 school year are: October 1, January 21, March 18 and May 20. Please note there are no meetings after May 20. If your paper work is not turned into ISD 15 CELC by May 20 you will need to relicense with the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE). The MDE may not relicense you because they may have a very heavy work load and be only relicensing teachers that are out of the country. MDE needs to receive the paper work in a timely fashion also or you may also have the district that you live in hold your teaching license. If you do use the district that you live in, make sure you check with their CELC group so you know their meeting dates and rules for turning you turn in your renewal units. Remember, if you don’t get your clock hours in to CELC, you run the risk of not getting your teacher’s license renewed.

Founded in 1987, Youth Frontiers’ dynamic retreats inspire students to live out the values of kindness, courage, respect and responsibility in their personal and school lives. Youth Frontiers aims to change the way kids treat each other in every hallway, lunch line and

classroom of every school in America so that today’s young people make tomorrow’s world better. Last school year, Youth Frontiers facilitated 766 retreats for 118,000 students and educators. Since its inception, Youth Frontiers has reached more than 1.4 million through their character development programs.

This coming October, St. Francis Middle School has scheduled a courage retreat for grade 7 students and Cedar Creek Community School will hold a kindness retreat for grade 4 students. Youth Frontiers has been invited back to ISD 15 schools for several years as they have demonstrated they clearly understand the challenges faced by schools and students every day.

Youth Frontiers offers engaging, high-energy retreats for schools, using a variety of tactics that kids respond to—including games, music, small-group discussions and inspiring stories that engage hearts and break down walls between young people. Throughout the retreat day, students begin to exhibit traits of true character—mending relationships, stating acts of courage and respecting Continued Page 7

General homework tips for parents } Make sure your child has a quiet, well-lit place to do homework. Avoid having your child do homework with the television on or in places with other distractions, such as people coming and going. } Make sure the materials your child needs, such as paper, pencils and a dictionary, are available. Ask your child if special materials will be needed for some projects and get them in advance. } Help your child with time management. Establish a set time each day for doing homework. Don’t let your child leave homework until just before bedtime. Think about using a weekend morning or afternoon for working on big projects, especially if the project involves getting together with classmates.

} Be positive about homework. Tell your child how important school is. The attitude you express about homework will be the attitude your child acquires. } When your child does homework, you do homework. Show your child that the skills they are learning are related to things you do as an adult. If your child is reading, you read too. If your child is doing math, balance your checkbook. } When your child asks for help, provide guidance, not answers. Giving answers means your child will not learn the material. Too much help teaches your child that when the going gets rough, someone will do the work for him or her. } When the teacher asks that you play a role in homework, do it. Cooperate

with the teacher. It shows your child that the school and home are a team. Follow the directions given by the teacher. } If homework is meant to be done by your child alone, stay away. Too much parent involvement can prevent homework from having some positive effects. Homework is a great way for kids to develop independent, lifelong learning skills. } Stay informed. Talk with your child’s teacher. Make sure you know the purpose of homework and what your child’s class rules are. } Help your child figure out what is hard homework and what is easy homework. Kindness Retreat The Youth Frontiers Kindness Retreat inspires character by engaging a single grade level of students in activities that emphasize the value of kindness. We empower kids to be “everyday heroes” by using kindness to include others, be respectful and make your school a better place. Students learn that bullying is much more than physical fighting, and includes verbal taunting and social exclusion. The retreat then teaches students a positive and safe way to

Youth Frontiers themselves and others. Comprehensive follow-up materials also provide a way for educators and students to extend the impact of the retreat. Courage Retreat The Youth Frontiers Courage Retreat inspires character by empowering a single grade level of students to act with moral courage and identify the social fears and peer pressures that impede responsible decision-making. The retreat encourages them to take positive risks that make a healthy difference for themselves, their peers and your school. Participation in the retreat results in cognitive, attitudinal and behavioral shifts that decrease students’ distractions to learning and build a positive school community with the best outcomes resulting from working with schools annually. Key learning objectives: } Identify personal fears and understand that everyone has them } Commit to acting with courage to make your school a better place } Deepen relationships with classmates to break down social barriers

The community of Independent School District 15 (ISD 15) is invited to a World Café event Wednesday, September 24 at St. Francis High School. A World Café is a term used to describe a structured conversational process with discussion occurring in small groups. The event is part of the strategic planning process the District is embarking on to chart a course of action for the future of ISD 15 schools. All community members are invited to attend one of two scheduled sessions. During each session, guiding questions will be asked and discussed. Community input will be a valuable component that will assist in the development of ISD 15’s core vision and mission. A small group format is being planned for the event. A maximum of six questions will be asked, and during the session, the groups will be re-organized to take advantage of all input and to strategically move forward in each of the areas asked. Plan on attending one of the two sessions offered and help shape the future of ISD 15 schools. Questions? Call 763-753-7023.

School Board Perspective Amy Kelly

Can you believe it? It’s that time again! The Minnesota State Fair has begun, which means summer is coming to an end. Independent School District 15 (ISD 15) is getting ready to start the buses, open the doors and welcome the students as we begin the 2014-15 school year! Many exciting changes will also happen this year! Kindergarten specials are back and additional time for our special education educational assistants has been provided so they can plan and meet the needs of their students. Funding extended day busing to provide opportunities to students beyond the school day were discussed at the August 25 school board meeting and Professional Learning Communities among staff will provide educators the opportunity to examine the effectiveness of their instruction in a more timely matter. The District is also embarking on a strategic planning process that will help guide our district in its decision-making process as well as unite the district and our community. All of these changes, I believe, will benefit the students of ISD 15!

Welcome new staff New principals recently hired for the 2014-15 school year are Scott Manni at Crossroads School & Vocational Center and Ryan Johnson at St. Francis Elementary School. Jenny Jones is the new assistant principal at St. Francis Middle School. St. Francis High School bleachers update On July 17, Superintendent Troy Ferguson, School Board Member Marsha Van Denburgh and Director of Curriculum and Instruction Paul Neubauer met with Minnesota State Senator Michelle Benson. The senator was seeking information regarding Independent School District 15 and how she could be of assistance to the district. One issue that the School Board has been discussing are the outdoor bleachers at St. Francis High School. The bleachers, which are in compliance, could have improved accessibility and safety if there were funds to update them. Senator Benson will look to see if there are any funding sources to help the district with this costly project. Annual Report Each year, the School Board reviews and approves a number of items at the annual meeting. Included are school board meeting dates, meal

School Board member Barb Jahnke absent Strategic Plan Update Paul Neubauer, director of Curriculum and Instruction, provided the School Board with an update on the strategic plan process that is now in progress. The vendor that was approved by the Board, TSL (Transformation System Leadership), the vendor the Board chose, will lead the District through the strategic plan process. Three teams, core planning, measurement and action planning, will be formed and comprised of District staff and community members representing a broad cross-section. An application process has been created (see page 9 for application form) and applications are due by Friday, September 5. A World Café event is scheduled for Wednesday, September 24 and is open to the public. A World Café is a term used to describe a structured conversational process with discussion occurring in small groups. There are two sessions scheduled to accommodate participation. District administration and School Board members will determine membership on the teams. Next year, in late April early May, the completed strategic plan will be presented to the School Board for approval.

Referendum authority update The School Board, with a vote of 6-0, approved a resolution rescinding and authorizing a referendum authority. Scott Nelson, director of Business Services, provided the explanation to the School Board. There is no change in tax impact. The District has no current voter approved referendum authority, and after the local optional revenue subtraction for fiscal year 2016, and after preliminary adjustment by the Minnesota Department of Education in compliance with Minnesota statutes, the Board voted to rescind the previously approved authority for approximately $286.23 per adjusted pupil unit and the converted board $13.77 for taxes payable beginning in 2015 through 2018. The Board authorized a new Board-approved referendum authority, in the amount of $300 per adjusted pupil unit, is applicable for five years, beginning with taxes payable in 2015. The Board may subsequently reauthorize the Board-approved referendum authority in increments of up to five years.

Behavior management contracted services update PBR Consulting, LLC was the contracted service provider for student behavior management services at St. Francis High School (SFHS) and St. Francis Middle School (SFMS). PBR Consulting, LLC has since gone out of business. A new contract with BI Consulting, LLC was presented to the Board. Chairman David Roberts stated that he would like the School Board to consider having this service provided by District staff in the future. A separate contract previously approved with PBR Consulting, LLC at St. Francis Middle School (SFMS) is now void. Discussion by School Board members included that the current model is inconsistent and offers no continuity between the two schools. Both SFHS and SFMS are looking for direction from the School Board regarding this issue, as the motion to approve the resolution for the 2014-15 school year failed by a vote of 6-0.

Adult Basic Education is gearing up for another school year Melody Panek ISD 15 Adult Basic Education Coordinator

Autumn is just around the corner! Soon the leaves will be turning red, orange, and yellow! There will be a brisk sharpness in the air and maybe even some frost on the grass when we wake up in the morning. Many kinds of birds will be flying south to stay in warmer locales for the winter. Many humans will take note of how smart the birds are and do the same! But as for those of us who “love it here”, we will light a fire in the fireplace, wrap ourselves in a snuggly blanket, hunker down and hope that this winter will not be as horrid as last year! Fall in Minnesota is a time for nature to begin the process of preparing for winter when it will slow down, go to sleep and wait for spring to arrive months later. For people, however, it is just the opposite! It is a time for both children and adults to wake up from the dreamy, hazy, slow days of summer and go back to school — to learn, to grow, to inquire and to expand minds and knowledge! At Independent School District 15 Adult Basic Education (ABE), we are

excited to start a new school year full of fun, learning, potential and growth. As you may recall, our students are adults that come from many parts of the world. They come to our classroom to learn English and to understand American customs and ideas. These students are very eager to learn about our great country and really want to become a part of the wonderful patchwork of different people who live here. Our classroom also assists adult learners who did not finish high school and who would like to take the General Education Development (GED) test or earn their high school diploma. These folks often become employed or start college after they have completed courses in ABE. Education for all of these students is the key that will open doors for them. Each student is here because they want to accomplish goals in order to live new lives full of possibilities! Although Mother Nature will go to sleep over the long, cold winter, our classroom will be wide awake with new people, new ideas, new discoveries and lots of learning! I hope that during this fall or winter you will

decide to throw off that snuggly blanket, open a door

of possibilities of your own and come join us!

Boxcar Bob Tuesday, May 12 “Boxcar Bob” Selby has been singing since junior high school and has sung in a variety of genres including: male choruses, country, folk, fifties rock & roll and even some light opera. He has been singing with “The Cowboy and Hobo Show” along with “Cactus Willie” (Charles Casterline) and “The Drifter” (Wil Kelly) for the past seven years. The band has four CDs to its credit with some of the tunes written by Boxcar Bob. For this performance Boxcar will be teaming up with JoAnne Lee, a very accomplished musician, guitar and bass player and teacher. The Drifter will be playing bass for this show and adding his wry sense of humor, all in all this promises to be a great show and one to look forward to hearing a variety of music.

is located at 707 County Road 10 in Blaine. “The reviews are in and the new look and layout of Northtown Library is a big hit,” said Anoka County Commissioner and Library Board Liaison Julie Braastad. “More than just a space for books, it’s about growing, learning and exploring our world’s possibilities whether it be applying for a new job or reading a work of fiction.” The day will feature an appearance by Minnesota author Debra Frasier at the Alphabet Fair, based on Frasier’s book A Fabulous Fair Alphabet, Civil War re-enactors from the 2nd Minnesota Battery of Light Artillery Civil War will set up camp, and local musicians will also perform. “For almost fifty years Northtown Library has provided Anoka residents with the tools they need for school success and lifelong learning,” said ACL Board President Bob Thistle. “Today we celebrate a newly renovated library, one that continues those traditions, designed to support and cultivate the curiosity of all learners.” Based on input and recommendations from the community, the renovated space features an open and inviting design, with more natural light and an updated color palette. Features of the renovated library include a larger children’s room, a new teen room, more public computers, more seating, study areas and conference rooms, lower bookshelves and fully accessible restrooms. The total budget for the project was $1,050,000 and the project will be completed under budget. Funds were primarily from Anoka County Library’s building fund with $150,000 from a state library grant through the Minnesota Department of Education.

St. Francis High School football tradition continues The present day St. Francis High School building was built in 1974, making this the 40th season playing football on our home field. The 2014 Saints are working hard, displaying outstanding attitude and effort while preparing for a successful season. In recognition of the past 40 years, it’s important to recall some highlights of seasons past. The three most successful seasons in program history are 1977, 1981 and 2011. All three teams won conference championships—in the Rum River Conference for 1977 and 1981, and in the North

Suburban Conference for 2011. The 1977 squad, with a record of 8-2, was led by head coach Bill Swanson. The team finished third in the state including a 63-0 win over Braham. In 1981, the head coach was Jerry Sobieck and the team finished with a 10-1 record, marking the double digit win record in school history. The 2011 squad, led by current head coach Chris Lindquist, also finished with an 8-2 record. Lindquist starts his 8th season with the program. He is currently in second place with 25 wins in his career, just 8 behind Sobieck’s 33-win record (1981-90). This season begins

the Saints’ second year in the Mississippi 8 Conference. Last year, the Mississippi 8 included three top 10 ranked teams in Class 5A with Rogers (#4), St. Michael-Albertville (#6) and Chisago Lakes (#8). Both Rogers and St. MichaelAlbertville are returning several core members from last year’s successful campaigns and are the teams to beat in 2014. However, the Saints are loaded with our own talent and look to challenge the Knights and Royals for supremacy in the Mississippi 8. Among key players returning are senior tailback and fullback John Santiago and Dom Dejarlais. Both backs were key

contributors on a team that was near the top of the metro area standings in rushing yards and touchdowns last season. A portion of the aerial attack returns this season as well. Junior quarterback Hunter Trautman hopes to continue his production through the air. As a sophomore, Trautman threw 17 touchdowns and has familiar receivers returning in senior tight ends Blake Moreno and Jake Vanness. None of the offensive production would be possible without the hard work and determination of the offensive line, which features three returning starters in junior left tackle Levi Ross, junior left guard Bo Blanske and senior right tackle Bryce Butler. The foundation of the

team’s defense will rely on both athleticism and speed. Returning on the defensive line are seniors Robbie Meints, Blake Moreno and Dom Dejarlais. The key returning linebackers that hope to continue their production and success from the 2013 campaign are senior Ron Olson, junior Matt Wunderlich and some other young linebackers hoping to step up and lead the Saints’ defense. In the defensive backfield, the Saints are looking for athleticism and leadership from returning senior starters John Santiago and Tyler Pallum. Come and support the Saints! Let’s make this season one for the record books. See schedule of games on page 17.

To The Goal

Barb Anderson

A wake up call for parents and coaches Teamwork matters. Learning teamwork and sportsmanship are the two most important aspects of participating in youth sports, according to both parents and coaches. } 50 percent of parents and coaches believe that sportsmanship has worsened since they were growing up } 75 percent of parents and coaches feel that teaching sportsmanship is the responsibility of parents. } 60 percent of respondents reported either witnessing or participating in negative or abusive sideline behavior.1 Do you agree or disagree? What do you think? What do you see and hear at St. Francis High School games? How about at the club level in the sports of hockey, soccer, basketball, baseball, football? What do we want our sidelines and bleachers to look like and sound like? There are some valuable resources for parents and grandparents to access in order to have healthy conversations with our young athletes, no matter what the age. If you want to make a difference and help your child/ grandchild develop the positive assets and critical life lessons such as teamwork, effort and resilience, check out the Liberty Mutual website. There is a great starting point at responsiblesports.com. This online sportsmanship conversation tool can help everyone have a positive fall sports season! Liberty Mutual has partnered with organizations such as the Positive Coaching Alliance, USA Hockey, US Youth Soccer, USA Softball, plus others. Topics include talking to your child’s coach, filling your child’s emotional tank, how to encourage your child/ grandchild in a positive way so they reach their potential, how to teach your athlete a healthy way to handle trash-talk from others, and many more. This past summer, I had the privilege to watch a North Metro girls soccer team compete during the regular season at the state tournament at the U14 C1 level with cooperation, teamwork, hard work, a never-give-up attitude and positive talk with teammates. The team pictured below has players from five area high schools (Andover, Anoka Blaine, Coon Rapids and St. Francis) and the coaches were able to merge them together in an amazing effort with great results. These players had the opportunity to learn the positive life lessons through positive coaching and positive leadership. They gave up only seven goals in 33 outdoor competitions this spring and summer. That was teamwork!

Coaching your own child can offer some of life’s greatest moments, though it requires a delicate balance between coaching and parenting. Make it clear to your child when you are in coach mode. Be sensitive to favoring or penalizing your child.2 2

The North Metro Girls Soccer Team, U14, C1 level, displayed great teamwork and sportsmanship all season. The team, coached by Nancy Jenkins and Charlie Giddings, finished in second place at the Schwan’s USA Cup Tournament in July, losing to a Canadian team in the final by a score of 1-0. Submitted photo Let’s take action; let’s have the first question we ask our athletes be something like, “Well, how did the game go for you tonight?” instead of, “Did you win?” or “Boy, did you ever have a bad ref.” Let’s keep our kids active and healthy through a positive athletic experience. We CAN and we DO make a difference in our questions, comments and conversation. Barb Anderson is a nutritionist, referee and coach actively involved in youth sports for many years. Annual neighborhood garage tour Annual Neighborhood Garage Tour brings theater to Twin Cities’ garages for fifth straight year, Off-Leash Area debuts brand new garage show Stripe & Spot (Learn to) Get Along Jennifer Ilse Off-Leash Area

Now in its fifth consecutive year, Off-Leash Area Annual Neighborhood Garage Tour continues to bring professional theater and dance to garages in neighborhoods throughout the metro area. This year’s tour brings a brand new family friendly dance/theater production, Stripe & Spot (Learn to) Get Along, to Stillwater, Brooklyn Park, Mendota Heights, Bloomington, Isanti, Plymouth, and Minneapolis. The tour runs from August 29 through October 12, with 21 performances over seven weekends. Tickets are by suggested donation of $5 to 15. Reservations are encouraged and can be made by calling 612-724-7372 or online at Eventbrite, http://garagetour.eventbrite.com Stripe & Spot (Paul Herwig and Taous Claire Khazem) each set sail in search of glory and conquest, but instead find themselves haplessly shipwrecked on an uncharted island. Presided over by a vaudevillian Sun and Moon (Jesse

Schmitz-Boyd and Jennifer Ilse), buoyed with an original music score, and anchored to an ingenious revolving stage, Stripe & Spot (Learn to) Get Along is a ridiculous and immensely creative fable for the entire family. Full of Off-Leash Area’s visual creativity, this all-ages production features choreography by Jennifer Ilse, set design by Paul Herwig, music and sound composition by Craig Harris, costumes by Kym Longhi, lighting design by Paul Epton, and text by playwright Dominic Orlando. “Theater should be accessible to all kinds of people from all walks of life,” says Brooklyn Park resident Sheila McMahon, who hosted the tour in 2010. “The Garage Tour feels like world class theatre in a small setting.” Past attendees of the Garage Tour who responded to audience surveys indicated that the top three reasons not to see theater were time, money and distance. “We’re trying to remove those obstacles,” says Ilse, “and show people that contemporary performance is for everyone.”

The Andover Family Fun Fest (AFFF) committee would like to thank everyone who came out on July 11 and July 12 to enjoy the Fun Fest! We were extremely fortunate with the weather, by having only a few hours of on and off drizzle, with overcast skies that kept our temperatures down, as opposed to the torrential downpours that nearby towns had. Every item on our schedule of events involves lots of discussion, planning, and work on behalf of the committee as well as those in the community who are involved in it. Community booths, craft fair booths, runners, entertainers, fundraising booths, Magic Bounce, bingo players and volunteers, silent auction participants and much more, all had work to do before, during and after the event. Thanks to all. We hope you enjoyed being part of the 2014 AFFF. Next year is the 20th Anniversary of the AFFF, which will be held on July 10 and 11. We plan to have lots of activities going on to help us celebrate. Please plan to be a part of it, whether you help make it happen or if you attend it. See you next year!

for the first time according to the Partnership for a Drug Free America. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet. In 2013, the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office, along with its law enforcement partners, collected 1,778 pounds of unwanted prescription drugs and safely disposed of them. The goal of the Prescription Drug Take Back is to provide a convenient drop off location for the public to dispose of unwanted or unused prescription drugs. Due to the public response and the on-going issues surrounding prescription drug abuse, the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office, along with its law enforcement partners, provides an on-going Prescription Drug Take Back Program. The Prescription Drug Take Back will accept unwanted prescription drugs from noncommercial, residential users only. No syringes, needles, or other hazardous materials will be accepted. Participation in the Prescription Drug Take Back is free and anonymous; all prescriptions will be disposed of with “no questions asked.” Drop Off Locations: Anoka County Sheriff’s Office 13301 Hanson Blvd. NE Andover, 55304 763-323-5000 Hours: 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

Avoid expensive errors when paying for college It’s just about back-toschool time again. If you have young children, you might be hustling them to the store for backpacks and binders. But if you fast-forward a few years, you can envision driving your kids a little farther — to their college dorms. And when that day comes, you’ll want to be financially prepared. So you’ll want to avoid making costly mistakes when preparing for, and paying, those big bills. Here are some of the most common errors: Not saving enough Only half of all families with children under 18 save any money for college, according to a recent study by Sallie Mae, the country’s largest originator of federally insured student loans. You might find it easier to save for college if you automatically move a set amount each month from your checking or savings account to a college savings vehicle. Not considering vehicles with growth potential The same Sallie Mae study found that more parents use a general savings account than any other method of saving for college. But since most

savings accounts these days pay only a minimal rate of return, you will have trouble getting the growth potential you need to achieve your college savings goals. Consider working toward your college savings goals by investing in a vehicle specifically designed for college, such as a 529 plan or a Coverdell plan. There are differences between these plans, such as contribution limits and tax treatments, but both allow you to invest for growth potential. As with any investment account, there are risks involved, including market risk. Stopping your savings once your children are in college Unless your children plan to take an awful lot of credits, they’re not going to finish college in just one year. Consequently, you’ll want to keep investing in your plan or other college savings vehicle while your children are in school. Taking out 401(k) loans Your employer may allow you to take out a loan against your 401(k) to help pay for college. But this may not be a good idea for two reasons: First, when you remove money from your 401(k) — even if you plan on eventually paying it back — you will slow the

potential accumulation in your account, thereby depriving yourself of resources you will eventually need for retirement. Second, should you leave the company, you might have to repay the loan within a limited number of days. Not using available tax credits Depending on your income, you might qualify for the American Opportunity tax credit, which is worth up to $2,500, provided you spend at least $4,000 on college expenses. Check with your tax professional to see if you qualify for this credit and how to most effectively incorporate it. And be careful you don’t waste the credit, because you may not be able to use it and your plan distributions at the same time. Paying for college can be challenging — but if you can avoid making the above mistakes, you’ve got a better chance of getting your kids through school without derailing the progress you’d like to make toward your other financial goals. what was up. He said his son told him that the vehicle had overheated and the red coolant light came on. His son drove it another five miles to a gas station and let it cool down. He mentioned that the vehicle actually stalled. His son added coolant to the overflow bottle and to the radiator, but the vehicle failed to start so he had it towed.

I arrived at work one Monday morning to find a vehicle sitting in our lot. It was towed in over the weekend. We found out later that the car had broken down in Royalton and it belonged to the college age son of one of our regular customers. I gave the owner a call to see

Fall Clean-Up Day Saturday, September 20 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

At the shop we pushed it into a bay and noted that the engine would not even crank over. The battery was good but the starter just made a clicking sound. One of our technicians put a socket, breaker bar and a six foot pipe on the crank shaft and the engine still didn’t turn over. The engine must have gotten so hot that it seized. It was a hard lesson to learn. When a light comes on, that means there is a problem. Today’s vehicles have numerous lights on the instrument panel. A good check is to turn on the key without starting the engine. All of the lights should come on; this is actually a bulb test for each bulb. You will notice that some lights are red and others are amber in color. There are a number of symbols that may be represented for each system. It is a good idea to check the owner’s manual for the exact meaning of the instrument panel lights. The main rule to remember is if a red light comes on, it means stop. Most likely if the driver would have immediately shut down the engine when the red coolant light came on, the damage would not have occurred.

Another rule to remember is amber colored lights means caution. You may drive the vehicle with the light on, however, it should be tested to find out what the cause is. If the amber check engine light is flashing, that indicates a severe problem and the vehicle should not be driven. Some vehicles may also have a message center somewhere else on the dash. It may turn a light on and display a message. If a light is on or a message displayed they should not be ignored. It’s possible that there are so many lights on that some folks are just ignoring them. We see vehicles roll into our shop with numerous lights on and vehicle owners are not concerned about any of them. In another case we had a new customer drop off his upscale SUV for a remote start installation. The vehicle started and idled very poorly. Plus, it stalled a few times before we even got it into the bay. There was an “Engine Overheat” message on. We called him to inquire about these issues before we started to work on the vehicle. He decided to come in to talk about these

matters. He explained it had recently been to another shop and they could not find anything wrong. They told him his vehicle was okay. We explained it was important to get the vehicle running properly before we installed the remote start system. We did not want to add more complexity into the system until the basics were under control. He agreed. We went to work testing the system. There was a code stored in the computer for overheating. A dash message said the vehicle was overheating, however, when we tested it, it was stone cold from sitting overnight. We entered our diagnostic procedure to find a completely different sensor had failed. The computer programing was somehow confusing the sensor inputs. After replacing a defective part, which happened to be a mass air flow sensor, the vehicle started and ran perfectly. We installed the remote start unit and all was well. Again, we have learned to take care of any light or message first. Even if things seem to be okay, there could be a problem lurking in the system somewhere. Sometimes we find that manufacturers have released a new software update to take care of lights coming on falsely. But whatever the cause, you may not be alerted of a serious problem if lights or messages are ignored. That can lead to very real and expensive issues. I hate when that happens.

Sports & Outdoors St. Francis summer baseball teams perform well Legion team returns to state tournament Compiled by Brian Julson with assistance from Coaches Jake Yatckoske, Cayman Salitros and Ryan Holritz The St. Francis Legion Baseball Team, Post #622, completed a very successful summer season by finishing with a 20-10 overall record and making a return trip to the state tournament. The Saints went 12-2 in league play, 3-5 in non-league play, and 5-3 in playoffs (including the state tournament). The Saints were the #1 seed in sub-state #13 (16 sub-state leagues in Division 1) and earned their return trip to the state tournament with wins over Zimmerman, Elk River, Cambridge (twice) and Buffalo. At the state tournament, players and coaches had the opportunity to attend the banquet and listen to keynote speaker Terry Ryan, general manager for the Minnesota

Twins, and participate in a home run derby hosted by Eagan Legion before playing their games. The Saints lost to Eagan 2-7 and St. Cloud 6-13 at the state tournament. St. Cloud and Lakeville North, who won the state tournament, qualified for the Legion region tournament.

Those who participated on the team were Alex Bauermeister, Shane Benson, Mitch Benson, George Bertels, Jeff Bowman, Dom DeJarlais, Andrew Fritz, David Jorgensen, Donovan Miles, Josh Niemeyer, Lucas Niemeyer, Ben Servais, Brent Tholen, Hunter Trautman, Keegan

The St. Francis VFW baseball team, VFW Post #10796 had a bumpy start to their season, losing their first ten in a row, but continued to work and get better and finish the season with a record of 3-17. Those who participated on the team were George Bertels, James Green, Kyler Hennen, Justin Kost, Dylan Lauseng, Parker Marshall, Donovan Miles, Cameron Pettis, Jake Scardigli, Evan Smith, Max Spitzer, Connor Sullivan, Hunter Trautman, Trevor Weidt and Keegan White. Players that participated were Hunter Arvidson, Adam Fritz, James Green, Cole Hansen, Dylan Jacobson, Andrew Johnson, David Kost, Parker Marshall, Jake Scardigli, Evan Smith, Austin Spindler, Max Spitzer, Connor Sullivan, Justin Tatley and Trevor Weidt. East Bethel Booster Days

Thank You!

East Bethel Booster Days had a great weekend and there was something for everyone. The Lions turtle races were popular, as well as our new vintage snowmobile show, and the car show too. Our seniors were hopping with all of the business at the community center. The fireworks display, sponsored by the East Bethel Fire Department, was a brilliant finish touch to Saturday. If you couldn’t make it this year, you missed out on a day that won’t soon be forgotten. The East Bethel Booster Days Committee would like to thank the sponsors, who made Booster Days happen! The City of East Bethel, Ham Lake Chamber of Commerce, East Bethel Seniors, Hakanson Anderson Engineering, East Bethel Fire Relief Association, Chops, Inc., Classic Construction, Cedar/East Bethel Lions, Eckberg Lammers, Attorneys at Law, Route 65 Pub and Grub, Blaine Youth Hockey Association, Osborne Development, Mille Lacs Oil Co., Aggressive Hydraulics, Central Truck Services, EJ’s Bar and Bottle Shop, Ham Lake Lions and Hidden Haven Golf Club. Too numerous to mention but so important — thank you to all the volunteers!

We look forward to seeing you in 2015! The Courier | September 2014 | www.the-courier.org

Youth basketball competition camp a success Andy Forbort Coach

On July 21-25 there were 72 basketball players participating in a Rec Department sponsored Youth Basketball Competition Camp held at St. Francis High School. The camp was held for boys and girls entering grades 4-9 this fall. The camp went from 8:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday and from 8:00 a.m. until noon on Friday. A short awards ceremony was held at the conclusion of camp. Camp participants were part of a daily routine that consisted of fundamental drill work each morning involving dribbling/passing, shooting/scoring, defense/ rebounding and transition. The remainder of the day consisted of competitive games of 3-on-3, 5-on-5, shooting contests, fast break transition and a defensive stopper game. The group was separated by age with the 4th-6th graders making up the Big Ten group and the 7th-9th graders forming the group known as the NBA. Each day concluded with a group shooting competition and drawings for prizes. There were many that assisted with this year’s camp. Former St. Francis High School standout basketball player Danye Guinn joined the camp this year. Girls Head Coach Trevor Schneeberger, boys assistant coach Matt Norton, former student-coach Nate Kahler and current studentcoach Preston Hewitt also assisted with the camp. The remainder of the camp staff was made up of current SFHS basketball players. The group included: Ameh Ogbemudia, Emma Eastman, Sam Scardigli, Tristen Goltz, Tanner Carlson, Robbie Whitney, Ryan Svihel, and Lucas Kungel. Thank you to all of the campers for their outstanding work ethic, positive attitude, and competitive spirit shown throughout the week and to all of the workers that dedicated their time this week to make the camp a success! Future competition camp dates will be announced in The Courier, Spring 2015. The competition camp results can be found online at www.isd15.org.

The ISD 15 Community Education Rec Department sponsored a Youth Basketball Competition Camp at the end of July. Seventy-two boys and girls signed up to practice basic fundamentals and compete against each other in friendly competition. Submitted Photos

Question For health reasons I need to eliminate all dairy food from my diet and I am concerned that I will not be able to consume the daily calcium requirements. Leafy greens are known to be a good source of calcium, can you provide me with other foods that I might not know about that are dairy-free, calcium rich? Answer You can get all the calcium your body needs without having to consume dairy. There are so many foods with more calcium than dairy without the side effects some people experience with dairy. Check out these surprisingly calcium rich foods to add to your weekly grocery list: Raw almonds pack quite a punch with 378 mg of calcium per cup. For a sweet treat eat dried figs which contain 274 mg of calcium per cup. If you like hummus, then try changing out chickpeas for white beans or black-eyed peas; both legumes pack approximately 170 mg of calcium per cup. Spend a little time reading labels you will be surprised what you learn… along with how easy and tasty it can be to make healthier food choices. Your body and family will thank you!

Anoka County Historical Society presented Century Farm Award to Burman Farm Anoka County Historical Society On July 23 the Anoka County Historical Society (ACHS) presented an Anoka County Century Farm Award to the owners of the Burman Family Farm at the bandshell on the Anoka County Fairgrounds. The Oak Grove farm was first purchased by William and Rebecca Burman in 1913. The farm is currently owned by a family corporation made up of William Burman’s great grandchildren and their mother. William Burman was born in England in 1840 and emigrated to the United States as an adult. He married Rebecca and they farmed in Burns Township before purchasing the farm for $1,500. The farm would stay in the family for

What better place to go exploring for ghosts than in the City of Anoka, Halloween Capital of the World? ANoka County Historical Society Stories abound in Anoka of odd happenings and eerie encounters. There is a house where the rocking chair rocks with no one sitting in it. A business in town has employees who won’t enter parts of the building because of the woman seen only in a mirror. There are doors that lock themselves, displays that change on their own, cold drafts…might they all speak of things unexplained? Sixty percent history, forty percent folklore, these stories are just part of the fun you will experience on your Ghosts of Anoka tour. Our costumed tour guides will take you on a walk through historic neighborhoods of Anoka. You’ll view (from the outside) homes and businesses that have been privy to some unexplained events, while your guide shares real stories that have been brought to the Anoka County Historical Society by the people who live and

work in these buildings. All tours originate from the Anoka County History Center and Library. The tour route is 15 blocks around Anoka city streets and lasts about 1½ hours. Tours run rain or shine, so be sure to dress for the weather and wear comfortable walking shoes. Tours are scheduled twice a month on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings in September and October. There will also be tours Monday-Thursday during the week of Halloween. The first tour of the evening begins at 7:30 p.m. Cost for an adult is $7, children (6–17) $5 and ACHS members $5. Advance reservations are required. Tours often sell out, so register early. Online registration ends at 3:00 p.m. on the day of the tour. Visit at http://anokacountyhistory. org/tours/ghost-tours to register. Please call 763-421-0600 for more information.

the next 100 years. William and Rebecca raised five children, including Alvin Burman, who took over the farm in 1918. Alvin and Emma Burman also raised five children, including William A. Burman who took over the farm in 1951. Today the farm remains in the hands of William A. Burman’s widow, Marlys Burman, and their children. It continues to produce corn and soybeans. ACHS presents awards to farms that have been farmed within the same bloodline for 100 years or more and consist of the original 40 acres or more. This is the 37th Anoka County Century Farm award given by the Historical Society since the program began in 1978 and the sixth farm in Oak Grove to receive such recognition.

Continuous distractions and attractions We love color (think blackand-white television versus color television). Of course, we love green. How many times in the spring do you hear people remarking “it sure is greening up” when the shades of the outdoors turn from shades of brown to shades of green? One obvious way to insure some green in our gardens is Carol Bray has managed to disguise her propane tank in an array of colorful plants and shrubs. Photo Carol Bray

drape nicely over the tank and produce lovely white blooms that turn to red blooms in late spring. Then come the peony flowers (front and center) followed by lilies, daylilies and heliopsis. My apologies to my propane deliverer. For years I had a rose shrub front and center of the tank (before the peony) and the poor propane delivery guy would get scratched every time he filled the propane tank. I’m sure (positive) he likes peonies much better than roses. to plant a shrub or tree that is an evergreen. With so many dwarf varieties of conifers that have been cultivated for small gardens, we are in luck. We can continuously have our ‘green’. Some choices for continuous green are Norway spruce (picea abies species), mugo pine (pinus mugo) and arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis). Another goal for gardeners is to camouflage the ugly things in our yards such as propane tanks. I try to distract people from looking at the tank at my home by having colorful plants surround the tank, especially during the growing season. For my propane tank garden, I planted early-blooming daffodils for early spring color (and distraction). The azaleas planted on both front sides of the tank bloom next. Two ‘Diablo’ ninebark shrubs were planted on the back side of the tank. The ninebarks’ branches

Did you know? According to the 2013-14 PayScale Salary Survey, which examines salary data for full-time employees in the United States who possess only bachelor’s degrees but no higher degree, petroleum engineering is the most lucrative major with regard to salary potential. Petroleum engineers earned an average annual starting salary of $103,000, and those salaries ballooned to $160,000 by mid-career when typical graduates in the study had 15 years of experience in their fields. Though engineering majors dominated the survey’s top 10, second place on the list went to actuarial mathematics majors, with average starting salaries of $58,700.
