WELCOME TO ‘MAHANA’
from Cove magazine
THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDERS AND POLYNESIANS have long used the term ‘Mahana’ to represent warmth, light and repose.
This stunning residence at 17 Grandview Terrace, Tallai, embodies all these qualities with its panoramic Gold Coast and hinterland views, sun-filled N-NE aspect and vast living and entertaining areas.
Enter from the street via the elevated aero bridge walkway, then descend from the internal mezzanine balcony into the huge living area where the majestic vistas unfold.
Previously owned by Terry Page – a Sydney bookmaker with a colourful reputation – the home has been lovingly renovated by the current owners, Martin and Nick.
“‘Mahana’ is a unique building with its own special character, so we have given it a modern makeover while still honouring the retro-cool curves of the original P&O style,” says Martin.
“When Terry owned the home, it was said he used to host lavish parties with lots of interesting characters – if only the walls could talk.”
While not giving away too many of their secrets, those same walls continue to offer the best of both worlds … cooling sea breezes in summer and the warm sunshine in winter.
The home also provides all the privacy of hinterland living while still being within close proximity to schools, transport, services and shopping.
Featuring solid construction with floating concrete floors, the Mediterranean-themed house has two wings which converge on the central living areas.
The eastern wing houses the master suite/ parent’s retreat, and – like everything about this home – it is something special.
Comprising of a double-sized bedroom with lounge area, the space features a decadent Moroccan-styled ensuite and a generous walkin-robe.
Full-size louvre windows take advantage of the spectacular coastal views and cooling summer breezes, while the spacious balcony is the perfect spot for that early-morning coffee or afternoon aperitif.
There is also a private stairway, giving access to the kitchen for those late night snacks.
In the west wing, you will find two spacious bedrooms on the upper level, both with balconies and views … one coastal, one mountain.
On the lower level is bedroom four, which also boasts coastal views and offers direct access to the pool via the patio.
Rather than just a cliché, the kitchen really is the heart of this home.
The extensive open-plan design features Miele appliances throughout, including an induction cooktop, pyrolytic oven, steamer and warming drawer.

A unique internal/external servery is ideal for entertaining, while an outdoor cooking area comes complete with an imported Italian wood-fired oven.
Martin and Nick were gourmet providores prior to retirement and every element of the kitchen design reflects their passion for food.
"Like Terry, we love to host our family and friends, and we have had an abundance of wellknown culinary celebrities cook in this kitchen,” says Martin.
The welcoming ambience continues in the intimate sunken lounge area, where soaring raked ceilings and a gas log fireplace await.
Naturally, the lifestyle aspects of this resortstyle home are truly amazing.

Open-plan living and dining areas flow seamlessly onto an outdoor entertaining deck with undercover dining area.
Step down to the lower entertainment area which surrounds a fully tiled, newly renovated freshwater pool, large sundeck, full-size tennis court and a stylish double-storey pool house with floating concrete floor.
The upper level includes a kitchenette with a bar and powder room, while the lower level tennis house comes complete with a sauna and bathroom, with potential separate accommodation on both levels.
Other amenities include a security fence with electric gates; brand new wastewater system; a freestanding shed/workshop, a double garage and parking for four cars.
Established gardens, with an intelligent appcontrolled watering system, complete this modern masterpiece.
“This house has been a labour of love for many years,” says Martin.
"We have poured our all into every aspect of the redesign and are incredibly proud of the end result.
"While it will be sad to leave, we know the next owners are going to appreciate the home's heart and heritage as much as we have.”
