Top resumé mistakes you should avoid
(NAPS) — For your resumé to stand out in a good way, avoid these blunders: • Typos: Spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors tell the reader you don’t care. If you can’t bother to proofread your résumé, why should someone bother to hire you? • Sassy_chick_69@hotmail.com: No. Get a respectable account. • Buzzwords: Motivated, team leader, results-oriented. Too many adjectives looks like you’re overcompensating for a lack of real skills. • Weird hobbies: Employers like to see that you have passion, but don't include the Civil War reenactment troupe you lead. It’s worth the extra effort to put together an errorfree resumé so you’re not disqualified before you even reach the starting line.

How to develop a career you want (BPT) — A recent Gallup survey found that half of polled workers said they were not engaged in their work, 20 percent were actively disengaged and just 30 percent said they were engaged. “Those are sobering statistics for corporate America,” said Kurt Metzger, vice president of Talent Management for Prudential Financial. “It doesn’t feel like a very good return on investment for employers, and it’s not a great story for employees, either.” How can you develop the career you want? Metzger offered some advice: • Create a statement of direction.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL AREA GRADS From Drs. Behringer, Herman & Eckhardt
Creating beautiful smiles to last a lifetime 700 Thurston, Defiance 419-782-0846 201 Van Grundy, Bryan 419-636-5918 1115 N. Shoop Ave., Wauseon 419-335-7047 www.smilesofohio.com
Metzger said, “You need to remind yourself of what your overall purpose is, so that you can manage your career intentionally, rather than allowing it to manage you.” A statement of direction also helps you articulate your desired path to others. To craft your statement, ask yourself what your purpose is, what you think success should look like and what you stand for. “It’s not necessary to create formal statements, or to memorialize your mission, vision and values on coffee cups and posters, but the answers to these questions can help you get your priorities clear in your own mind,” Metzger said. • CAREER, Page 32

Celebrate graduates with DIY party decor, gifts
Family Features
Graduation marks a major milestone in any student’s life. Whether you’re planning a party in honor of the graduate or commemorating the accomplishment from afar, consider these fun DIY party projects. Borrow an idea from Kelly Mindell, author of the Studio DIY blog, and look to the yearbook committee for inspiration to make your party decor ultra personal. Graduation balloon superlatives feature colorful floating balloons. The project uses pictures of guests to give each one a special or funny recogni-
tion such as “Best Hair” or “Most Likely to be President.” Get creative to recognize all your guests, and have fun watching everyone discover their very own piece of the party. When you can’t attend the festivities but want to honor a deserving student’s accomplishment, surprise them with a money confetti popper instead. This easy-to-assemble popper, also created by Mindell, is filled with money and confetti, which creates an instant celebration when the graduate covers himself with confetti in order to retrieve the goods inside.

Tips to save for college
(NAPS) — Wherever your children are in their educational paths, it’s never too early to save for college. The FINRA Investor Education Foundation has put together these tips that can help you save. 1. Start now. Even as costs continue to rise, college remains within reach for many families, especially those that start saving early. The College Board reports that half of all fulltime public and private nonprofit four-year college students attend institutions charging tuition and fees of $11,550. Small amounts of money, if invested early, can become sizable investments through compounding. 2. Take advantage of tax advantages. Consider
tax-advantaged savings options such as a 529 college savings plan. These plans allow the money you earn to grow tax deferred. Withdrawals are tax free when used for qualified education expenses. 3. Be mindful of investment risk. With most college savings investment options, you may lose money or your investment may not grow enough. For example, if you invest in stock mutual funds, chances are the funds’ annual performance will mirror the performance of the stock market. You may lose money during a declining market. On the other hand, savings accounts or U.S. savings bonds typically protect the principal amount you save.

Five things families with students should consider
(StatePoint) — Transitioning to college life can be difficult on both students and families. From new expenses to a new lifestyle, being prepared for what lies ahead can help you avoid common bumps in the road. Here are five things families with college-bound students should consider: • Getting involved: Being away from home and making new friends can seem daunting. Encourage your student to get involved in school activities and events. From joining the campus paper to running for student government, there are a range of extracurricular opportunities that can lead to new friendships, help students maintain an active calendar and round out one’s classroom education. • Health and wellness: Late nights spent studying instead of sleeping, as well as crowded dorm rooms, can be a prescription for colds and flu. Check out on-campus and local health care options before your student gets sick. No one wants to scramble to research medical options when he or she isn’t feeling well. Many campuses offer student insurance. See what makes the most sense for your family. Locate a nearby pharmacist
before visiting the doctor so you can provide that information at your appointment. • Financing college: College may be one of your family’s biggest investments to date. Whether that describes your family or not, there’s no doubt about it, higher education comes with a big price tag. It’s never too late in the process to seek out new financing options, even if your child is already away at school. From filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, (FAFSA) to exploring private loans, free online resources can help guide you through the process. Check out resources designed for college-bound students and their families, such as Wells Fargo’s “5 Steps to Financial Aid” video series, which offers helpful advice
on finding a scholarship, applying for loans, and more from “Mr. Fellows, your wiser college advisor,” at www.WellsFargo.com/ fivesteps. • Staying in touch: You’re busy. Your kid is busy. But regular checkins with your student can help you know that everything is going well. Set up a weekly appointment to chat by phone and get the scoop — just make sure your student’s phone plan allows for sufficient
texting and calling. • Money management: For many students, college is the first time they will gain some financial independence. Set your kids up for success by teaching them how to establish a workable budget. A checking and savings account designed for college students can help them stay on track. You can review moneymanagement tools for college students at www.WellsFargo.com.

Creative ways to display diplomas, awards Metro Editorial Services
Graduation season is upon us, and grads everywhere are lining up to receive their diplomas and degrees, which represent years of hard work and discipline. Diplomas may be simple sheets of paper, but those sheets of paper are symbolic of so much more. Yet too often diplomas end up collecting dust in a box somewhere instead of being displayed in a home. Diplomas incorporated into a larger collection of items can become eye-catching components of home décor. • Practice feng shui. The principles of feng shui suggest the
“fame” area of a home is the central area along the wall opposite the front door. A “power” area also exists in the center of the wall opposite the main entrance door. Such areas make ideal spots to display diplomas that remind you of times of personal triumph. • Create a gallery wall. Certificates and diplomas can be matted and framed just like any other piece of artwork. When mixed and matched with other framed pieces, they create a subtle, rather than boastful, effect. These certificates will blend into home décor and be part of a larger gallery look, providing visual interest
and conversation pieces. • Create a shadow box. Fill a shadow box with the diploma and some other mementos from school, like newspaper clippings or prom ticket stubs. The entire collection will make for a nice display.

What to wear beneath your graduation gown Metro Editorial Services
Caps and gowns are as much a graduation tradition as the playing of “Pomp and Circumstance.” The gown and other accoutrements are customs that have been passed down through generations, dating back to the early days of academia. Colors, stripes, positioning of graduation tassels, and the shapes of sleeves and hoods all may offer information about graduates and the degrees they earn. Graduation attire ensures grads look uniform and professional. Although there’s little variation in how to wear the cap and gown, graduates do have flexibility with regard to the clothing they wear beneath their ensembles. It may be tempting to go casual beneath a cap and gown, but grads might
regret that decision when taking post-ceremony pictures. Some graduates think it doesn’t matter what they wear beneath the gown, feeling the gown will cover everything anyway. But that isn’t true, as grads can expect at least a portion of their attire to be peeking through their graduation gowns. Many such gowns end at the knee or slightly below, making it easy for everyone to see graduates’ pants and shoes. Both male and female grads can benefit from wearing something classy beneath their gowns. A crisp collared shirt can look sharp for men and women alike. Guys might want to wear a tie for that extra touch. Graduation gowns tend to be solid colors and may be quite bland, so a shirt with a splash of color can make a statement that is
neither bold nor silly. Remember to wear something form-fitting or slim cut under the gown. The graduation robe is voluminous enough without adding any extra girth from bulky clothing. Graduation gowns fall short of form-flattering, so wearing many layers beneath a gown will only add to the volume. You may not have time to change between the ceremony and the after-party or dinner, so it’s important to wear something that is appropriate for the next venue. Save time by wearing clothing that will seamlessly transition to a family dinner or after-party. Avoid wearing pants that are the same color as the graduation robe, as you want a little contrast. Women who wear skirts or dresses that end above the knee and will
not show beneath the gown hem have more freedom. Avoid long skirts or dresses that can make the outfit look weighed down when paired with the gown. Graduates’ shoes will be on full display come the big day. Therefore, wear new, clean shoes that are presentable and formal. Avoid sneakers or flip-flops, which are too casual. Keep in mind the location of the ceremony and the forecast. If you will be trekking across a muddy football field, wear a durable shoe, as heels or open sandals may cause you to trip or sink into the turf. Dress appropriately for the temperature, too. A summer graduation may be hot, especially outdoor ceremonies under the blazing sun. Wear lightweight clothing and sunblock to stay comfortable and safe.

Two-year degree programs and certificates can open doors (BPT) — Tiffany Fair initially ruled out a career in health care. She assumed most available positions were for nurses. Fair’s outlook on the industry changed quickly when she learned about the growing field of health information technology (HIT). “HIT intrigued me because it enables individuals to play a key role in the health care system outside of the traditional clinical setting,” she said. The need for professionals in roles similar to Fair’s is expected to rise as experts anticipate 11.7 million new patients will enroll in health care coverage in 2015 through provisions outlined in the Affordable Care Act.
“For those who want to quickly enter the workforce, an associate degree in HIT provides the education and skills preparation needed to break into emerging health care professions that provide career mobility and fulfillment,” said Dasantila Sherifi, professor at DeVry University. The U.S. Census Bureau projects the population of Americans 65 and older will more than double by 2060. An aging America will send more health care workers into retirement, and expand the population that requires additional primary care services to address chronic health issues. Population shifts signal emerging health care career opportunities.

States vary in success at improving HS grad rates WASHINGTON (AP) — The record high American graduation rate masks large gaps among low income students and those with disabilities compared to their peers. There are also wide disparities among states in how well they are tackling the issue. “This year, we need to sound a stronger alarm,” said Gen. Colin Powell and his wife, Alma Powell, in a letter released recently as part of an annual Grad Nation report produced in part by their America’s Promise Alliance organization. The report is based on 2013 rates using federal data, the most recent available.
The nation’s overall graduation rate has reached 81 percent, a figure frequently touted by Education Secretary Arne Duncan. Here are several things to know about high school graduation rates: THE GOOD NEWS: More students are graduating from high school than ever before, with large gains among African-American and Hispanic students. Since 2006, the percentage of black students graduating has risen 9 percentage points to 71 percent and Hispanic students has risen 15 percentage points to 75 percent. The improvement is due to a variety of factors, including greater consistency in comparing graduation
rates from state to state and the development of systems to identify and target at-risk students. The increase in the graduation rate also has been accompanied by a decline in the number of “dropout factory” schools, where 60 percent or less of students graduate. The report estimates that the U.S. is on track for a 90 percent high school graduation rate by 2020. S TAT E - B Y- S TAT E COMPARISONS: Graduation rates among the states vary, ranging from 90 percent in Iowa to 69 percent in Oregon. Gains have been fueled, in part, by large growth in some of the nation’s largest states, including California,
Florida, Georgia and North Carolina. But 15 percent of the nation’s high school students attend school in New York, Illinois, Washington and Arizona, where rates are declining or stagnating. STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES: Students with disabilities graduate at a rate of 62 percent, 20 points behind the national average. The rate is 2.9 percentage points higher than two years earlier. These students include those with intellectual disabilities with significant limitations, but also a wide range of other disabilities such as autism and speech impairments. It’s estimated that 85 percent of students with disabilities can do grade-lev-
el work, said Katy Neas, executive vice president for public affairs at Easter Seals. Neas said there have been improvements in the number of students with disabilities earning standard diplomas, but historically low expectations kept these students from getting the support they need. “When these kids get the right services and support, they can be successful in grade level academic work,” Neas said. L O W - I N C O M E STUDENTS: The graduation rate for low-income students was 73 percent. It’s moved up 3 points in the last two years, but is still 8 percentage points below the national overall rate.

• Think holistically. The notion of work-life balance as a trade-off can be misleading. You will have to make choices, but done right, taking care of your life outside of work can actually leverage your career. • Establish your value proposition. “Too many employees believe they are entitled to their job, and a promotion and a raise,” Metzger said. “It’s not true. For an employer, or a customer in the case of an entrepreneur, to pay you, you must bring something of value to the table.” To establish your value proposition, consider your passion — which allows you to build resilience — your strengths and what skills you have that are

in demand. “Having passion and talent is great, but if you can’t get paid for doing it, it’s not what you want to build your career strategy around,” Metzger said. • Create your dream job description. What would your perfect day at work look like? What are your hours? Most importantly, how are you spending your time? Write out what your dream job would be like. Pay careful attention to the job responsibilities; you want a job where you’ll spend time playing to your passions and strengths. • Make it happen. Once you’ve established what your dream job looks like, lay out a plan for getting there. That doesn’t necessarily mean doing a job search. Very often, change can happen incrementally.
