Northwest Ohio sizzling with summer activity 2
Summer Entertainment Guide
Northwest Ohio is the place to be this summer with festivals, concerts, 5Ks and cruise-ins galore. Music will be in the area as the Music in Your Parks series continues in Defiance, the summer concert series goes on in Paulding, and Bryan hosts its city band concerts. There also will be other performances scattered throughout the region including those during fairs and festivals. One big local music festival is the third annual Take Me to the Rivers Wild Bill Davison and Milt Buckner International Jazz Festival, which will be held June 20 at Kingsbury Park in Defiance. Throughout the summer there will be lots of festivals. Just in June, there are the Kidz Fest, three strawberry fests, two German fests, Bavarian Schuetzenfest, Bryan Jubilee, two rib fests, river regatta, jazz festival, and Greek fest. In addition to the festivals and concerts, the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure (GOBA) will ride back into the area. The ride, set for June 20-27, will go through Van Wert, Bluffton, Defiance, Bowling
Green and Ottawa before returning to Van Wert. More than 2,500 cyclists are expected to take part in the event. Defiance, which is a layover city, will have several special events for GOBA participants and the community while the event’s participants stay in the area. For those who prefer to run instead of bike, there are more than 20 5Ks and runs scheduled throughout the region. Each county will have its Relay for Life event to raise money for cancer research and treatments. The 5K races start June 1 with the Heartland Series Marathon and 5K in Bryan and end with the One Step at a Time 5K in Defiance on Sept. 19. Triathlons are also scheduled in Napoleon and Defiance. For car and motorcycle enthusiasts, there are plenty of cruise-ins and rallies slated with some being held weekly. Others are being held as solo shows are part of bigger events such as the Balloon Fest Car Cruise in August. For those who like to take to the greens instead of the

road, there are golf outings and tournaments galore. Some outings and tournaments are fundraisers such as the Linus Slattery Memorial Golf Tournament weekend in Hicksville (which raises money for the in-patient hospice center in Defiance) and the Fort Defiance Humane Society Golf outing. Other outings are set for youths such as the boys and girls invitationals at Eagle Rock in Defiance. There are many other opens and tournaments as well. For those who like to look back and celebrate the region’s history, there are special events such as Edgerton’s sesquicentennial planned, as well as old favorites like the pow wow and Johnny Appleseed Festival at AuGlaize Village and the vintage baseball game, doll show and Fall on the Farm at Sauder Village. There are also events such as the Flat Rock Creek Festival in Paulding and Wauseon Antique Bike Flat Track Race. Turning from something old to something new, the Defiance Public Library

Thousands to come to Defiance this summer Jazz and rib festivals, toga party, concerts and more planned
Thousands of individuals will be headed to downtown Defiance this summer. Defiance will be host to several events starting in June, including the Take Me to the Rivers Jazz Festival and the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure (GOBA). “Starting with the middle of June until after the fireworks, we will have thousands of extra people in town,” said Kirstie Mack of the Defiance Development & Visitor’s Bureau. “The Jazz Festival (on June 20) and the Monday after that, the GOBA riders will be in town until the morning of the 24th.” The third annual Take Me to the Rivers Wild Bill Davison and Milt Buckner International Jazz Festival will be from 5-9 p.m. at Kingsbury Park. Prior to the festival’s start, will be a new special children’s event from 4-5 p.m. There will be five musicians playing for the children and educating them about music. Last year’s jazz festival attracted more than 500 people, and this year’s event is poised to grow. When the GOBA riders come to town, multiple fun events have been scheduled for the riders and community. Think toga. “On that Monday night (June 22) from 4-8 p.m. at Pontiac Park we’ll have a toga party,” Mack said. “We’ll have them make their own toga (using sheets and duct tape).” Donations of sheets and duct tape for the event are being accepted at the DDVB at the corner of Third and Clinton streets. As part of the toga party, there will be sandwiches, drinks and a “kegger” of root beer for floats. Food vendors will also be on site. “That night, the entertain-
ment will be an open mic night and two comedians from the Funny Bone in Toledo,” Mack said. Activities on Tuesday, June 23, including a food court alley on East Third Street in the afternoon from 10 a.m.–6 p.m. and a graduation-themed event at Pontiac Park in the evening from 4–8 p.m. Evening events start at 4 p.m. The Tinora German Club will be offering a German meal, there will be graduation cake served as well. The food venders also will return. Awards will be given to GOBA members. SqueezeBox will then be performing at 6 p.m. at Pontiac Park as part of the Music in Your Parks Series. Throughout GOBA’s visit, individuals can take selfguided tours of downtown, where 18 photos showing bicycles around the country, that were taken by Ayersville graduate Chuck Haney, will be showcased. A brochure of the tour will be available at the DDVB. “The community is welcome to attend all the events,” Mack said, stressing activities are not just for GOBA members. “We encourage the community to come out.” She also reminded motorists to be aware of the approximately 2,500 bicyclists that will be in town those days. The Andrew L. Tuttle Museum will also be open on special days in the summer including June 19, following the presentation on the history of jazz at the Stroede Center; June 20 from 2-4 p.m. with a book signing by David Meyer; and June 23 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Rounding out the activities downtown in June will be Art in the Park at the
fortgrounds on June 28. Also at the fortgrounds, individuals can see the fireworks on July 3. Music in the Parks series will be held throughout the summer with various bands. The series will be held at 7:30 p.m. June 4 at Veterans Memorial Park, 6 p.m. June 23 (during GOBA) at Pontiac Park, 7:30 p.m. July
16 at Triangle Park and 6 p.m. Aug. 6 at UAW Park. August will be the Defiance Hot Air Balloon Festival, sponsored by the United Way of Defiance County and its community engagement center. The festival will be Aug. 14-15 at the Defiance County Airport on Ohio 15. September will bring cooler weather as well as
the seventh annual Rockin’ the Rivers Music & Rib Fest from 2-11 p.m. Sept. 26. This year’s theme is “Come join us for the best of yesterday, today and tomorrow.” “There will be a surprise with the bands,” Mack hinted. The rib fest will have 10 rib vendors and ribs will compete for a people’s choice as well as judge’s choice award. Admission is $5.

The tradition continues with 47th annual Hamler Summerfest HAMLER — It’s polka time. The 47th annual Hamler Summerfest will be held July 24-26 at Community Park, on Ohio 109 in Hamler. The festival will include German food, fun, dancing, games and more. Admission is $7 daily Friday and Saturday and $5 Sunday. A three-day pass is available for $15. The Hamler Summerfest committee, is a non-profit organization that has been putting on a German heritage festival for the last 46 years. It is always the last full weekend in July. Money raised from the festival goes back into Community Park, which is used by the community throughout the year. The festival has grown greatly. It started out in 1969 by the American Legion as a one-day only festival on the streets of downtown Hamler. When more than 800 people attended, it was decided to make it an annual event and make it last more than a day. Now thousands of people attend the event yearly and in 1973 12 acres of land was purchased on the edge of Hamler — that is now known as the Hamler Community Park— to use for the Summerfest as well as the Hamler Country Fest. This year’s event has two new events — a 5K run and 1K kids run. In addition, the festival has its first woman president in Sheila Brown. As tradition, there will be an interdenominational church service at 7 p.m. July 23, prior to the festival’s start the next day. There will be lots of food during the Summerfest including barbecue chicken, hot beef, hot dogs, bratwurst, baked beans, sauerkraut, German potato salad and ice cream. Gates will open July 24

Race day registration is $25. The 5K run will being at 7 p.m. Registration for the 1K kids run is free. The race is open to kids age 12 and younger. Make memories at Sauder Village ARCHBOLD — Step into an old-time trading post, visit a barbershop and jail or sing a hymn in the village church. Watch spinning, broom making and pottery demonstrations and help make butter in the historic homes. Meet the horses and cows, take a ride on the train and enjoy some ice cream or artisan chocolates. There are so many ways to create special memories while having fun in the past this summer at Sauder Village – Ohio’s largest living-history destination. “A visit to Sauder Village offers our visitors an opportunity to celebrate the lives of our pioneer ancestors,” shared Kim Krieger, PR/ media relations. “Sauder Village is an excellent place for visitors of all ages to
spend time together — whether it’s a couple looking for a relaxing day away, a fun day with grandchildren or a special outing with good friends.” Throughout the historic village visitors can experience Ohio’s historic past through activities and stories shared in the community shops, Native American area, pioneer settlement, historic homes, farm and gardens. While watching a cooking demonstrations in the homes, sitting at a desk in the District 16 School or hearing stories in the barbershop, visitors often feel as though they are taking a trip down memory lane. And since it’s not a guided tour, visitors can take their time while experiencing life in the past at their own
pace. Depending on the day and season, visitors also have the opportunity to try a variety of hands-on activities like making noodles, rolling out a pie crust, washing clothes on a scrub board or playing old-fashioned games. Throughout the village, visitors can also marvel at craftsmen blending skill and creativity in glass, metals, fabric, wood and clay. These talented traditional and contemporary craftsmen not only demonstrate their trade but also offer handcrafted items available for sale in places like the Spinning Shop, Pottery Shop, Tin Shop, Glass Shop and Tiffin River Woodworks. Other popular craft shops

Explore the Toledo Zoo’s new aquarium Visitors can now explore the mysteries of the deep in the Toledo Zoo’s newly renovated aquarium. The new aquarium features more than 3,000 animals in 178,000 gallons of water. Although the building’s footprint remains the same (about 30,000 square feet), exhibit space and room for visitors to explore have been greatly increased. This is possible through redesigning work space areas and by using new life support systems which require less room.
Experience
Every step leads further into the mysteries that lurk underwater, from flooded forests of the Amazon and deep seas of the Pacific to fish that glow in the dark and sea nettles never before seen in Toledo. Visitors will discover the aquarium’s dynamic new aquatic experience. Touch a stingray with your own hands. Stand beside a sea turtle as it glides by. Interact with a diver inside the huge 90,000 gallon reef tank, generously supported by Owens-Illinois Inc. A first for the zoo and one of the most interesting aspects of the new aquarium are the hands-on touch tanks which bring visitors closer than ever to small sharks, rays, sea stars and other animals of the oceans. Supported by the Clement O. Miniger Foundation, the new, 2,300-gallon, beanshaped exhibit holds about six species of sharks and rays. After rinsing their hands, visitors can dip their fingers into the tank and make contact directly with the animals. It’s a visitor experience that holds huge value for the zoo’s mission of inspiring people to care about animals and conserve the natural world.
Committed to preservation
Although most zoo visitors don’t remember a Toledo Zoo without an aquarium, it wasn’t part of the plan until the early 1920s. The Great Depression delayed the plans for over a decade. That’s when the Works Progress Administration (WPA), worked with the Toledo Zoological Society to match unemployed craftsmen with zoo construction projects. The Toledo Zoo is home to one of the largest collections of WPA-era buildings in one location including the aquarium. The WPA, a depression era relief agency of the federal government, provided funding for the labor. Construction materials — the clay brick, stone, lumber, door and window frames — were largely salvaged from ramshackle buildings, abandoned canal locks, old box cars and countless other sources around the city.
Milestones
On May 31, 1939, the aquarium opened to the public. It was reportedly the 30,000th project the WPA completed in Ohio, and a triumph of construction as it held the distinction of being the only true aquarium in the state and the world’s largest freshwater aquarium at that time. The completion of the aquarium marked the end of the grand public works construction projects at the zoo.Shortly afterwards came World War II and the end of the most significant period in the history of the Toledo Zoo.
Tested by time
A near-century of bearing under crushing weight eventually took a toll on this beloved building, as did the corrosive effects of saltwater. This combi• ZOO, Page 12

Summer Entertainment Guide
The Crescent-News, Defiance, Ohio - Friday, May 29, 2015
Summer driving tips One of the fastest ways to put the brakes on a great vacation is with an emergency. But by planning ahead and preparing properly, travelers can minimize risk. AAA offers these precautionary tips for car maintenance. • Consider having your car checked by an automotive technician before a long trip. An ounce of prevention can be worth a pound of cure. • Check the tires regularly for uneven or excessive tread wear. Make sure all items, including the spare, are inflated properly. Do at least one check before hitting the road, as tires hot from driving give inaccurate inflation readings. • Check the coolant level and condition, making certain the proper 50/50 mixture of water and coolant is present. • Check the level and condition of the engine oil. If driving under extreme conditions — such as very hot summer weather or pulling a heavy trailer — you may want to consider switching to an oil with higher viscosity. Check your owner’s manual for specific recommendations. • Look for worn, cracked, blistered or soft belts or hoses. Always perform this check with the engine off. • Hot weather can shorten the life of a car’s battery – if there’s concern, have it tested by a qualified automotive technician. C-N File Photo

for Traffic Safety and the Urban Institute. The foundation’s new American Driving Survey offers the most up-todate, comprehensive look at how much Americans drive on a daily and yearly basis. First-year data, collected May 2013-May 2014, is available now from the ongoing study, which will set the bench-
mark for future data and ultimately reveal trends in Americans’ driving habits. “This is the first ongoing study that provides a look at when and how much Americans are driving,” said Peter Kissinger, president and chief executive officer of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. “Existing federal data with this level of detail was last released in 2009, eight years after the previous release. stantially limits the extent to which we can use existing data to draw conclusions about Americans’ current driving habits.” The first-year results of the American Driving Survey revealed that: • Motorists age 16 years and older drive, on average, 29.2 miles per day or 10,658 miles per year. • Women take more driving trips, but men spend 25 percent more time behind the wheel and drive 35 percent more miles than women. • Both teenagers and seniors over the age of 75 drive less than any other age group; motorists 30-49 years old drive an average 13,140 miles annually, more than any other age group. • The average distance
and time spent driving increase in relation to higher levels of education. A driver with a grade school or some high school education drove an average of 19.9 miles and 32 minutes daily, while a college graduate drove an average of 37.2 miles and 58 minutes. • Drivers who reported living “in the country” or “a small town” drive greater distances (12,264 miles annually) and spend a greater amount of time driving than people who described living in a “medium-sized town” or city (9,709 miles annually). • Motorists in the South drive the most (11,826 miles annually), while those in the Northeast drive the least (8,468 miles annually). • On average, Americans

drive fewer miles on the weekend than on weekdays. • Americans drive, on average, the least during winter months (JanuaryMarch) at 25.7 miles daily; they drive the most during the summer months (JulySeptember) at 30.6 miles daily. “This new data, when combined with available crash data, will allow us to conduct unique, timely studies on crash rates for the first time,” continued Kissinger. “This will allow us to identify specific problems and evaluate various safety countermeasures to a degree never before possible.” Results from the American Driver Survey were based on telephone interviews with a nationwide sample of 3,319 drivers who reported detailed information about all their driving trips taken the day before the interview. Data collection is ongoing; the information reported in the first-year results was collected between May 21, 2013-May 31, 2014. Multi-generational vacations on the rise across the nation ORLANDO, Fla. (AAA) — School is winding down and temperatures are rising which signals the start of summer vacations According to a 2014 AAA survey, many travelers will take this opportunity to bond with extended family members, with more than one-third (36 percent) planning to take a multigenerational trip in 2015. This is a 4 percent increase over last year. For more than one-quarter of Americans, these multi-generational trips will include three generations — they will travel with both their children and their parents or in-laws. Another 5 percent will travel with their grandparents and 15 percent plan to take their grandchildren on vacation. “Today’s grandparents are active and enjoy exploring the world,” said William Sutherland, AAA vice president, Travel Services. “They value spending time with
their children and grandchildren. In today’s fast-paced world, travel affords families an opportunity to spend quality time re-connecting and sharing experiences.” Planning a multi-generational vacation may seem daunting with the variety of ages and interests to cater to within one group. But, there are many travel options available to facilitate a trip that will appeal to everyone. A qualified travel agent can help put together customized tours and find resorts which cater to these types of vacations. “The key to planning a successful multi-generational trip is making sure there is something for everyone to enjoy,” continued Sutherland, “Be sure to have a family planning meeting before you book a trip.” Many individuals took to the roads Memorial Day weekend and the trend is expected to continue.
“Following a harsh winter, many Americans are trading in their snow boots for flip flops and making plans to start the season with a vacation getaway,” said Marshall L. Doney, AAA president. “A strong employment market and low gas prices have driven consumer optimism to new highs and boosted Americans’ disposable income. This is welcome news for the travel industry,” continued Doney. When traveling with or without family members its important to plan ahead. Here are some tips for motorists to remember. • Carry an emergency kit with a flashlight, extra batteries, warning devices such as flares or reflective triangles, jumper cables, a first-aid kit and extra water. • Don’t let the gas level get below one-quarter of a tank. • Select your route on a map
ahead of time and study it to know exactly where you’re going. • Reserve all accommodations in advance. • Lock your car when you leave it and keep valuables out of sight. • Secure children and adults in safety seats, booster seats or seat belts as required by law. • Bring books, games, or music for the ride, and a pillow so passengers can sleep. •Bring information on your destination to make the most of your trip. As North America’s largest motoring and leisure travel organization, AAA provides more than 54 million members with travel, insurance, financial and automotiverelated services. Since its founding in 1902, the not-for-profit, fully taxpaying AAA has been a leader and advocate for the safety and security of all travelers. AAA clubs can be visited on the Internet at AAA.com.
