The top 4 reasons Nelly came out of nowhere for Greekfest Ashley Chaffin Crimson White Staff

“I’m just looking forward to coming down and rocking Alabama,” he said. “The more excited Alabama is about Nelly the more excited Nelly is to turn it up for Alabama. I just want to thank the whole state of Alabama for the love that they’re not just showing me, on not only this trip here, but on the whole existence of Nelly.”

SPORTS

“They [Greekfest] wanted to do something to unite the houses and create a party with a purpose atmosphere,” said Costa Collegiate marketing manager and UA alumnus Robert Sabin. When asked about the diversity of the music Nelly said, “If you look at everything that I’ve been able to accomplish and all the things I’ve done with all of my music, it’s been very diverse. We share a writer’s home. It doesn’t matter what genre it’s in, so long as it’s good.”

CULTURE

2. Integrating the greek system

Nelly had some great quotes when we interviewed him at Greekfest.

In order to appeal to a variety of musical tastes, coordinators for Costa’s Greekfest strive to bring in a mixture of genres and styles. Each year, a survey is sent out in the spring that lists potential acts, and students vote on who they would most like to see. The internationally known rapper and performer Nelly said he looked forward to performing for everyone before classes got back into full swing. Here are the top 4 reasons Nelly came to Tuscaloosa.

OPINION

3. The Energy “Energy is a must,” Nelly said. “We have our show kind of laid out, but we like to vibe with the students. We’re real good at being spontaneous on stage and interacting with the fans. As long as the crowd is turned up, then we’re turned up.”

4. The Climate As we all know, Alabama is extremely hot and humid in August. As we also all know, Nelly likes it hot in herre. “It’s gettin hot in here (so hot) // So take off all your clothes.” - Hot in Herre

Jesse Williams They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so we’re not going to bother talking much about the biggest man on the defensive side of the Crimson Tide, we’ll let the many faces of Jesse Williams speak for themselves.

2 . We can’t say for sure, but after some close examination, we’re pretty sure Williams made this face after finding that last little bit of Dreamland ribs between his teeth and savoring its smoky goodness.

Key to success: Gameday selfies in bowties on Twitter Want to know why the Crimson Tide always wins? SPOILER ALERT: It’s not because of luck or talent-- it’s the bowties. posted in Sept. 20, 2012 at 12:00 pm CST

Stephen N. Dethrage

2. Oct. 13, from Columbia, Mo. This selfie has it all. It features a pinstripe suit that literally shines, a grimy bathroom mirror, a toilet and its reflection in the shower door, two rubber wristbands – Missouri never stood a chance.

@10ajmccarron

3. Oct. 20, from Knoxville, Tenn.

Crimson White Staff

It’d be easy to credit the success of the Alabama Crimson Tide to head coach Nick Saban, the unreal athleticism of its players or just plain luck, but we have a different theory – the team draws its unmatched power from the selfies that the bow-tie wearing quarterback AJ McCarron takes and tweets before most games. Don’t believe it? Consider this: In games this season in which McCarron tweeted a bow tie selfie, the team went undefeated. Before facing Johnny Football and the rest of the Texas A&M Aggies at home? No photo posted. We rest our case. With that in mind, here are the top 4 AJ McCarron bow tie selfies.

1. Jan. 7, from Miami, Fla. From the sunny filter to the crimson-and-white bow tie, this selfie can’t be beat. Are those polka dots heart-shaped? Is his hair highlighted, or is that just the filter? We may never know, but we know we love this photo. @10ajmccarron

@10ajmccarron

Neyland Stadium may look like a garbage truck workers convention, but there’s apparently at least one really nice bathroom in Knoxville. The pink-patterned bow tie and that absolutely blingin’ watch make up for McCarron’s LSU-purple pocket square in the rising senior’s third-best bow tie selfie.

4. Dec. 1, from Atlanta, Ga. Rounding out the Top 4 is this gem from Hot-lanta. The photo may not feature an open toilet or an expensive watch, but it did what it had to. After a nail-biting 57 minutes of football, McCarron connected with Amari Cooper for a 45-yard pass to give Alabama the lead back, which the Tide desperately held onto long enough to win the SEC Championship.

UA abruptly ends IFC pledgeship posted in October 30, 2012 at 8:05am CST

Adrienne Burch Crimson White Staff

Sept. 16, President Guy Bailey and others received an anonymous email claiming to be sent on behalf of fraternity and sorority pledges. The email requested an overhaul of the pledge process. Sept. 25, The Crimson White approached the University for comment on possible hazing violations or pledgeship cancellation. Hebson emailed a statement via a University spokeswoman. “A few pledge classes were suspended temporarily while we investigated allegations of hazing and identified the individuals involved. Individuals who violated the code of student conduct are being dealt with appropriately. Thus far, no fraternities have been found responsible for hazing; only individuals were involved, and it was not a chapter action. Later on Sept. 25, Hebson announced the suspension of pledgeship, effective on Tuesday, Oct. 1, until Oct. 8. Oct. 18, 12:30 p.m., assistant dean of students Lowell Davis announced the cancellation of fraternity pledgeship in a meeting with Interfraternity Council fraternity presidents because of allegations of hazing. In the afternoon, at the press conference held on the steps of the Rose Administration Building, vice president for student affairs Mark Nelson said it was not the number of calls to the hazing hotline this year that resulted in the suspension of pledgeship in IFC fraternities but the specificity of the anonymous allegations in the week prior. All fraternities were allowed to conduct spring pledgeship. Hebson told The Crimson White on Jan. 23 there were no changes made to the fraternity recruitment process. Though assistant dean of students Lowell Davis said on Oct. 18 the University would form a group to discuss the future of fraternity pledgeship, Cathy Andreen, a University spokeswoman, confirmed Wednesday, April 23, that no such group met prior to the start of spring recruitment.

The University of Alabama’s plan to remove a historic property has sparked controversy as some worry the Capstone’s plans for expansion are rolling over its rich history. The Kilgore House, built in 1890, sits on property the University has dedicated for a new dining hall. UA spokeswoman Cathy Andreen confirmed the University’s plan to build a new Fresh Food dining facility on the property by 2014 but said a potential buyer is interested in relocating the house. This summer, the University hosted two sealed-bid auctions in July and August, hoping to attract a buyer who was willing to move the house. The house failed to attract a bid in either one. For now, it remains without a buyer. If the University needs to move the house, it should at least consider a few places around campus:

The CW has compiled a few images to honor Guy Bailey and his facial hair, a dynamic duo that would have made November a little bit warmer for all. posted in Nov. 1, 2012 at 3:11pm CST

The sudden resignation of President Guy Bailey came as a shock to many in the UA community. On Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, Bailey sent out a campus-wide emailed statement, citing his wife’s health as a main reason for leaving. He said, “This is a decision my wife Jan and I made together after much discussion about how we can best address her health, which is the most important priority in our lives.”

3. C’MON.

Bailey was eventually replaced by current president Judy Bonner. That being said, one of Guy Bailey’s finest achievements needs celebrating. For 60 days the Capstone was able to enjoy some of the finest facial hair around, and the Bailey beard will be sorely missed.

*We also noticed that he enjoys pointing his fingers for emphasis.

So we got really lucky... again The stars alligned in 2012, giving Alabama a chance to get to Miami. Three things that never should have happened that would send us back to the title game...inexplicably did. posted on November 19, 2012 at 8:06 pm CST

College football has a thing for drama. At 10:35 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, Stanford kicker Jordan Williamson sent a 37-yard field goal through the uprights and sent a Catholic university in South Bend, Ind., and the entire southeast region of the country into frenzy. 1) Baylor 52, Kansas State 24 - A week after being named the No. 1 team in the country, the Kansas State Wildcats were routed by the Baylor Bears in Waco, Texas…and then: 2) Stanford 17, Oregon 14 - Stanford’s defense rose to the challenge and stifled the high-flying Oregon offense, and Williamson’s field goal meant Alabama would rise to No. 3, and have a chance to face No. 2 Georgia in the SEC Championship Game… and Alabama fans did this:

3) Alabama 32, Georgia 28 - The Tide and Bulldogs played to a thrilling finish, when C.J. Mosley tipped a pass from Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray as time expired. Right before that, AJ McCarron connected with Amari Cooper for the go-ahead touchdown to conclude the nail-biting back-and-forth affair.

Top 10 Moments from the BCS National Championship

6. Alabama followed the interception with a 97-yard touchdown drive capped by a 34-yard touchdown to freshman wide receiver Amari Cooper. It was the longest scoring drive in BCS Championshp game history. 35-0

This was our third national championship in four years. This isn’t our first rodeo... but it was still pretty awesome. posted in January 7, 2013 at 7:30pm CST

Alabama throttled Notre Dame 42-14 in the BCS National Championship Game to take home its third title in four years under head coach Nick Saban. The Fighting Irish entered the game with the world on their side – people wanted to see someone outside of th SEC win it, they wanted Notre Dame to return to glory, and above all else, they wanted to see Alabama lose.

7. In the third quarter, Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson finally put the Irish on the board with a two-yard rushing touchdown. The score ended Alabama’s shutout streak in BCS Championship games at 108 minutes and 7 seconds, which started with 6:15 left in the 2009 title game. It also ended Alabama’s streak of unanswered points at 69. 35-7

1. Eddie Lacy’s first touchdown of the game – Alabama drove down the field with ease, and Lacy capped off the opening drive, which averaged 12.4 yards per play, with a 20-yard touchdown. It was the longest touchdown Notre Dame had given up all year and the first it had allowed in the first quarter. 7-0 8. Not to be outdone, McCarron and Alabama went right down the field, and Cooper caught his second touchdown of the night. 42-7

2. After a Notre Dame punt, Alabama drove right back down the field, and quarterback AJ McCarron hit Michael Williams for an easy, play-action touchdown. 14-0

9. Notre Dame running back Cierre Wood rushed for one yard, running out the clock and giving Alabama its 15th national championship. 42-14.

3. Notre Dame punted again, and the Crimson Tide went right back down the field. This time, it was freshman T.J. Yeldon who took a hand off on the goal line in for the score. 21-0

10. Saban was showered with Gatorade. “It’s cold, it’s sticky, but I appreciated not getting hit in the head with the bucket,” he said. “That was an improvement.”

4. After trading possessions, Alabama made it 28-0 when McCarron hit Lacy with a screen pass, which Lacy capped with his signature spin move. “I think we played well offensively,” Saban remarked at halftime. 28-0

5. After halftime, Notre Dame drove down into UA territory once again, but Dee Milliner tipped a pass attempt, and HaHa Clinton-Dix snatched it to end the best-scoring threat of the night so far. 28-0

Early Monday, Feb. 11, Sam Jurgens left the Blount Living-Learning Center to walk home. Jurgens was approached by someone who asked if he had a lighter. Police said Eddie Williams knocked Jurgens unconscious. Dennis Pettway and Tyler Hayes also attacked and stole his backpack, containing a MacBook Pro. Jurgens then woke up with a blood-soaked jacket and shattered headphones. He thought he was dreaming. Williams physically assaulted Caleb Paul, another UA student, and knocked him unconscious. According to police reports, Williams stole Paul’s wallet containing cash, his ACT card and credit cards while Pettway and Hayes sat in a car nearby. Williams used the stolen ACT card to buy snacks from a Bryant Hall vending machine.

Brent Calloway used the same card “with knowledge that it was stolen,” and later admitted to using the card for numerous purchases. Around midnight Tuesday, Feb. 12, Hayes, Williams and Pettway were arrested in connection with the attack on Jurgens. Calloway and Williams were also charged with fradulent use of a debit/credit card after using a stolen ACT card to purchase snacks from a Bryant Hall vending machine. University officials annouced Feb. 27 that all four players were no longer associated with the Alabama football program and no longer enrolled at the University.

UA Athletic director Mal Moore dies at age 73 Moore dedicated his life to the University and left an impressive legacy posted in March 15, 2013 at 8:45 am CST

Marc Torrence Crimson White Staff

Bryant Museum

The University of Alabama confirmed that longtime athletic director Mal Moore passed away at the age of 73 in Durham, N.C. on March 30, 2013. Moore had been hospitalized at Duke University Medial Center since March 14 with pulmonary problems. Moore served as UA athletic director since 1999 but stepped down March 20, citing his declining health. Bill Battle was approved as his replacement. Here’s why Mal Moore was awesome.

1. He played quarterback for Bear Bryant - Moore played from 1958-1962, a member of Bryant’s first national championship team. He was only a backup during his Crimson Tide career, but not many people can say they played for the greatest college football coach of all time. Bryant Museum

2. He coached at Alabama - Moore served as a graduate assistant after he graduated and eventually rose to quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator under Bryant.

4. He hired Nick 3. He oversaw more than Saban - ‘Nuff said. $240 million in facilities upgrades during his time at Alabama - This included expanding the seating of Bryant-Denny Stadium to 101,821, building a new tennis facility, football facility and weight room.

Fifty-two years later, he sits in an office overlooking a multi-million dollar football practice facility and weight room, down the street from a stadium with a capacity of six figures on the campus of a school that’s won 15 national championships, including three in the last four years. Battle, 71, was approved as athletic director in March by the UA Board of Trustees and is tasked with sustaining what his predecessor, Mal Moore, left behind.

That looks good on other people, too.

HOROSCOPES Today’s Birthday (04/25/13). Good financial fortune shines for the first half of the year. Take advantage of this golden chance to save. Your social life takes off. Play, share and reconnect; partnerships develop new opportunities. Contribute with groups that further your passion. Alone time for peace and vitality balances. To get the advantage, check the day’s rating: 10 is the easiest day, 0 the most challenging. Aries (March 21-April 19) -- Today is an 8 -- Figure out your finances. If you asked for a tax filing extension, now may be a good time to complete your return. Don’t wait for October. Get it done and celebrate. Taurus (April 20-May 20) -- Today is an 8 -- Vivid expressions of love and creativity bubble forth. Your team is on fire with productivity, and your leadership capabilities impress. It’s a good time to get messages across. Haste makes waste. Gemini (May 21-June 20) -- Today is a 9 -- Get inspired by your work. The action may be backstage, but you can still participate. It’s a great time to write your novel. Craft the infrastructure. Be bold, and prosper. Cancer (June 21-July 22) -- Today is an 8 -- Stifle outrage for now. Distractions are abundant. Keep focusing on what you want, especially your financial objectives. Relax with friends and something tasty later. You’ll have an entertaining story. Leo (July 23-Aug. 22) -- Today is a 7 -- Put your own oxygen mask on so you can help others. Keep your nest tidy. Someone surprises you by acknowledging you for the value you provide. Don’t gloss over it. Take it in. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) -- Today is an 8 -- It’s all so clear now ... handle priori-

ties first, and explain it to co-workers. Accept a creative assignment. Also offer your support for another’s project. Upgrade workplace technology. Expect another great learning experience. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) -- Today is a 9 -- It’s getting lucrative, but it’s too easy to spend new income. Shop to get the best deal. Act quickly, but not impulsively. Love is all around; share your dreams and everything looks possible. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) -- Today is an 8 -- The next few days get active and fun. A turning point regarding home and career keeps you busy. Use your experience wisely. Get what you need from far away. It’s refreshing. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) -- Today is a 7 -- Curtail spending for now, and review priorities and plans. Deadlines are looming; keep your focus. Clean out closets, and discover something that was missing. You have plenty, distribute it wisely. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) -- Today is an 8 -- A new money-making scheme tempts, and a scheduling tool opens new possibilities. Your public life interferes with privacy. Some things may have to be left behind. Enjoy the attention. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) -- Today is an 8 -- Take responsibility. Choose strategies and budget. Accept coaching from the competition. Tempers could flare; stick to cool efficiency and prioritize, for a shift in a donation campaign. Imagine it flowing perfectly. Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) -- Today is a 7 -- You’d rather play than work; take advantage of the mood for future planning. Communication around scheduling eases crankiness. You don’t always have to say “yes.” A great burden lifts.
