Obama begins new term boldly By George E. Curry NNPA Editor-in-Chief WASHINGTON (NNPA) — Rejecting calls for him to move closer toward his Republican critics, a confident President Barack H. Obama kicked off his second term on Monday by making an impassioned plea for a more inclusive America. “It is not our generation’s task to carry on what those pioneers began,” Obama said in his inaugural speech. “For our journey is not complete until our wives, our mothers and daughters can earn a living equal to their efforts. Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law – for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well. “Our journey is not complete until no citizen is forced to wait for hours to exercise the right to vote. Our journey is not complete until we find a better way to welcome the striving, hopeful immigrants who still see America as a land of opportunity – until bright young students and engineers are enlisted in our workforce rather than expelled from our country. Our journey is not complete until all our children, from the streets of Detroit to the hills of Appalachia, to the quiet lanes of Newtown, know that they are cared for and cherished and always safe from harm.” Obama’s speech represented a clear shift from four years ago when the newly-elected president optimistically thought that he could inject civility and common sense into Washington’s contentious politics. We must act, knowing that today’s victories will be only partial and that it will be up to those who stand here in four years and 40 years and 400 years hence to advance the timeless spirit once conferred to us in a spare Philadelphia hall.” Obama, the nation’s first African-American president, was sworn in on the day the nation observed the annual federal holiday to honor the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He was sworn in on a black leather Bible used by King that was topped by a smaller one owned by President Abraham Lincoln. And he referenced both men as he declared Americans “are made for this moment.” The direct link between the nation’s first Black president and the observance of King’s birthday underscores how far this country has progressed since the assassination of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) president and Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1968. Alderman pushing for first neighborhood school downtown By Wendell Hutson There are currently no neighborhood high schools located downtown for students living nearby to attend, but Alderman Bob Fioretti wants to change that. This week the second ward alderman was joined by parents at a Chicago School Board meeting as he proposed building a neighborhood high school in the soon-to-be former Jones College Preparatory High School, 606 S. State St., once students move into the new facility next fall. Jones is one of 10 selective enrollment high schools operated by Chicago Public Schools and like the other nine is exempted from accepting students solely based on their address. “Central area residents have told me and told Chicago Public Schools that they need a quality, safe neighborhood high school to serve their area. Census data shows what many residents have said, that more than 40 percent of the families with children are leaving this area when the children reach school age,” said Fioretti. “(So) converting the current Jones building into a neighborhood school will help to keep more families in the city, which will benefit the economy of the entire city.” However, CPS officials and Mayor

Rahm Emanuel announced Tuesday that it plans to use the other building to expand Jones College Prep further, to open up more space for new students. “With this expansion, we are able to nearly double the number of students who have access to a highquality, rigorous academic environment that will help them succeed,” said Emanuel. “Our school district is facing enormous financial and structural challenges that must be addressed. At the same time, it is our responsibility to do everything we can to support the success of our students and provide families with every opportunity we can to access a highquality education for their children.” There are currently 900 students at Jones College Prep and the new expansion plan would grow student population over the next four years to a total of 1,700 students, according to Barbara Byrd-Bennett, chief executive officer for CPS. And many of the students living in communities close to Jones high school are Black, according to census data. Antonio Starks is one of them. He lives in a high-rise apartment building in the 2100 block South of Michigan Avenue. The 15-year-old freshman currently attends a private high school, but

Residents have no clue about who should be next alderman in 7th Ward By J. Coyden Palmer Unlike the race to replace her husband in the 2nd Congressional District, who will replace Ald. Sandi Jackson is still a mystery. Jackson announced her resignation earlier this month and Mayor Rahm Emanuel said he will be taking online applications before deciding on his choice. Last week Jackson told her constituents that she would handpick her replacement, much to Emanuel’s chagrin. In the meantime, residents the Crusader spoke with said they are unsure of what to think of the whole situation, since no candidate has come forward to run. “Is there anyone even running?” asked Kim Johnson, who has lived in the ward for the last four years. “I’m actually surprised there were not a lot of people stepping forward, as much as people complained about Sandi.” Mark Smith said whoever runs is going to have a lot on their plate because Jackson did not do much during her time in office. He said he was really turned off by Jackson after the blizzard in 2011 when Jackson was seen riding in a snow plow cleaning the block she lived on while other residents were stuckfor days. “I think whoever they pick will be better than her. She sucked,” Smith said. “I thought she was only in it for

herself the whole time and not to represent the people. I think her saying she was going to pick her own successor showed you how arrogant she really is. Last Friday, Mayor Emanuel seemed to negate Jackson’s claims when he spoke about what he is looking for in an alderman. With a city council that has given the mayor some pushback on things he would like to accomplish during his first term, Emanuel could use the oportunity to select a person that will rubber-stamp all of his agendas. But Emanuel said he will not do that. “I am looking for a candidate with a strong record of community engagement and involvement throughout the ward, who is ready to work on day one,” Emanuel said. “The process I have devised is a transparent, open process that will allow any eligible resident of the 7th ward to present their qualifications and will ensure the residents of this community get a strong representative on City Council.” Resident Eric Rogers said he wants to see the next alderman focus on transportation issues in the ward. He said the South Shore area in particular is a traffic nightmare for cars and pedestrians. He would like to see the city bring more bike lanes into the area and improved Metra rail stations in the 7th Ward.

around the bus stop on 79th and Jeffrey. “I want to see more police in the area and more things for kids my age to do after school,” Nichols said. “Without the programs in the parks and schools, a lot of people are just hanging out and are up to no good.” The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. Jan. 25. The job comes with a $115,000 annual salary, a $73,280 expense account to set up a ward office and control over $176,484 in staff salaries. Those seeking to apply must fill out the application on the website set up by the city. http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/mayor/iframe/7 th_ward_aldermanicvacancyapplicationprocess.html

Mayor announces process for filling vacant council seat Those interested in filling the 7th Ward City Council seat recently vacated by Sandi Jackson will have to undergo a process Mayor Rahm Emanuel described as “comprehensive.” He said “I am looking for a candidate with a strong record of community engagement and involvement throughout the ward who is ready to work on day one. “The process I have devised is a transparent, open process that will allow any eligible resident of the ward to present their qualifications and will ensure the resident of this community get a strong representative on city council.” Those who are interested in the vacancy can visit http://cityofchicago,org/ward7application. Murder victim not as innocent as portrayed By J. Coyden Palmer A dark and disturbing image about a murder victim is emerging nearly a week after he was shot to death on the campus of Chicago State University. Media outlets throughout Chicago have published stories of how 17-yearold Tyrone Lawson was an honor student and innocent victim who was running away from a fight outside the Patricia and Emil Jones Convocation Center Jan. 16 when he was gunned down. The Crusader has learned that allegedly Lawson was a gang member, drug dealer and failing student at the time of his death. The

picture broadcast on media outlets of his innocent face was from eighth grade. Since that photo, Lawson had grown to be about six feet and weighed nearly 300 pounds. While he was enrolled in honor classes at Morgan Park High School, a school source said Lawson was currently getting D’s and F’s in school. The new information about Lawson comes from various sources from within the Chicago Police Department, Chicago Public Schools and his fellow Morgan Park students, whose identities are being protected for their own safety. A police source said an eyewitness to the murder

told investigators that Lawson struck the man who allegedly shot him and was running away from the altercation when he was shot. Michael McNabb, 32, a relative of former NFL player Donovan McNabb, is also a leader in the Gangster Disciples street gang, according to the police source. McNabb along with Stephen Gilbert, 29, is being held without bond at the Cook County Jail on first degree murder charges related to the case. During their bond hearing, Assistant State’s Attorney Brad Dickey said Lawson never entered the arena where the basket(Continued on page 15)

Obama begins new term boldly (Continued from page 1) tion of an African-American to the nation’s highest office, he predicted in 1964 that a Black would be elected president of the United States. In an interview with the BBC, King was asked to comment on a statement by then New York Senatorelect Robert F. Kennedy that it might be possible to elect a Black president in 40 years. “I’ve seen levels of compliance with the civil rights bill and changes that have been most surprising,” King said. “So, on the basis of this, I think we may be able to get a Negro president in less than 40 years. I would think that this could come in 25 years or less.” Obama’s election came 44 years after King’s statement and four years longer than Robert Kennedy had envisioned. Standing in the shadows of a U.S. Capitol built by slave labor, Barack Obama expressed much more self-assurance Monday than he had four years ago. “We do not believe that in this country freedom is reserved for the

lucky, or happiness for the few,” the president said. “We recognize that no matter how responsibly we live our lives, any one of us at any time may face a job loss, or a sudden illness, or a home swept away in a terrible storm. The commitments we make to each other through Medicare and Medicaid and Social Security, these things do not sap our initiative, they strengthen us. They do not make us a nation of takers; they free us to take the risks that make this country great.” The reference to a nation of takers was a direct rebuttal to Mitt Romney’s telling a group of donors that 47 percent of Americans are “dependent on government” and would “vote for the president no matter what.” Ironically, Romney received 47 percent of the popular vote in his losing effort against Obama. The president indicated he plans to move the U.S. away from “perpetual war” and will take on tough issues such as immigration reform and climate change. Obama be-

came the first president to link the 1839 Seneca Falls Convention for women’s rights, the Selma-Montgomery, Ala. voting rights march and the 1969 Stonewall movement that put gay rights center stage. He said, “We, the people, declare today that the most evident of truths –- that all of us are created equal – is the star that guides us still; just as it guided our forebears through Seneca Falls, and Selma, and Stonewall; just as it guided all those men and women, sung and unsung, who left footprints along this great mall, to hear a preacher say that we cannot walk alone; to hear a King proclaim that our individual freedom is inextricably bound to the freedom of every soul on Earth.” President Obama used “we the people” — the opening words of the U.S. Constitution — five times during his 18 1/2 minute speech. Although attendance at the inauguration was expected to be half of the record 1.8 million four years ago, it appeared that Monday’s figures will probably exceed previous estimates. One official said there were probably more than 1 million in attendance in the mall. That would still rank ahead of 400,000 George W. Bush drew at the beginning of his second term and more than Bill Clinton’s 800,000 in 1993. Four years ago, Obama exceeded the then-record 1.2 million who saw Lyndon B. Johnson inaugurated in 1965. After the inauguration, the Obamas led a parade procession that included 59 groups with 8,800 people from the Capitol approximately 1.6 miles down Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House. The president and the first lady left their limousine near 9th Street, N.W. and walked for three blocks, returning the waves and cheers of excited onlookers, before returning to the motorcade. President Obama, Vice President

Joe Biden and their families watched the remainder of the parade from the glass-encased official review stand in front of the White House facing Lafayette Park. Later, they danced at two private balls in the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, down from the 10 held in their honor four years ago. At each ball, they slow-danced as they were being serenaded by fellow Chicagoan Jennifer Hudson, who sang Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together,” a tune the president had belted last year at the Apollo Theater in Harlem to display his vocal talent. As usual, all eyes were on First Lady Michelle Obama as onlookers waited to see what fashion designer she would elevate to international attention. She surprised everyone by selecting Jason Wu, the same designer she used for the first inauguration. The first lady came on stage at the Commander-in-Chief’s Ball in a dazzling ankle-length ruby-colored chiffon dress. Alicia Keyes was no fashion slouch, wearing a red backless dress as she played the piano and sang, “Obama’s on firrrrrre!” Earlier, Beyoncé Knowles stirred the inauguration crown with her rendition of the National Anthem. However, the The Times of London reported — and other news outlets later confirmed — that she lip-synced the National Anthem. According to the New York Times, a spokesman for the Marine Band said it is routine for musicians to record music for the inauguration in case the weather prevents them from keeping their instruments in tune. The Times said Col. Michael J. Colburn, the band director, received orders from event organizers to use the backup track just before Beyoncé was scheduled to sing live. “We don’t know why,” Sgt. Kristin duBois told the New York Times. “But that’s what we were instructed to do so that is what we did. It’s not because Beyoncé can’t sing. We all Saturday, January 26, 2013

know Beyoncé can sing. We all know the Marine Band can play.” Kelly Clarkson and all other program events were performed live. On Monday, Obama became the second and probably last president to be sworn in four times. In 2009, Supreme Court Chief Justice John G. Roberts flubbed his line at the official swearing in and a do-over was completed the next day. This time, Roberts administered the oath of office in a flawless private ceremony Sunday because the Constitution requires the president to be sworn in on Jan. 20; he repeated it in the public ceremony on Monday. Reciting his oath Monday, it was President Obama’s turn to make a slight error. Instead of “United States,” he said, “United Sta –.” It didn’t matter because the official oath had already been administered the day before. Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was elected four times before presidents were restricted to serving two terms, was the only other president to utter the presidential oath four times. “… We, the people, understand that our country cannot succeed when a shrinking few do very well and a growing many barely make it,” Obama said. “We believe that America’s prosperity must rest upon the broad shoulders of a rising middle class. We know that America thrives when every person can find independence and pride in their work; when the wages of honest labor liberate families from the brink of hardship. We are true to our creed when a little girl born into the bleakest poverty knows that she has the same chance to succeed as anybody else, because she is an American; she is free, and she is equal, not just in the eyes of God but also in our own.” As he prepared to leave the U.S. Capitol, President Obama stopped and turned around. “I want to take a look one more time,” he said. “I’ll never see this again.” 3

OPINION

EDITORIAL POST INAUGURATION NOTES President Barack H. Obama’s second inauguration was quite interesting, and highlighted a number of concerns held by a lot of Americans. It was upbeat and optimistic and set a definite tone of inclusion; every group, especially those on the outskirts of society, were brought into focus with a promise that their issues would be addressed during his second term. The president’s speech was excellent and very “presidential.” He devoted a significant paragraph to climate change, something that he did not do in the first term. More importantly, he made a point to remind us that reforms will not happen overnight, and that his progress on difficult issues would be “partial” during the trying times of his second term. This last point is crucial. It is obvious that he faces obstacles on all fronts. Every move seems to be thwarted, yet, his heart is in the right place. He is a man, a politician, and not a miracle worker, but the fact that he was elected for a second term speaks volumes about the number of people who support him. There is great irony and, for some Black Americans, a bittersweet taste, that Obama’s second inauguration stole some of the thunder from Dr. Martin Luther King’s holiday. Most of the national discussion centered around it, and not Dr. King. Moreover, though Dr. King’s son, MLK III, was seen in the celebratory crowds, he was not asked to speak, although Myrlie Evers-Williams, the former wife of slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers, did participate. For a number of reasons, there are a lot of African Americans who oppose Obama, mostly because, it seems, that he has not focused on Black people during his presidency. Some unreasonably want him to be the president of “Black” America, and not just America. Others have more substantive reasons for setting themselves in opposition to the first Black president. They cite the debacle in Libya wherein he destroyed a sitting head of state, Moammar Khadafi, and the use of American drones that have killed innocent women, men and children abroad. These are serious concerns, so serious, in fact, that Dr. Cornell West felt that Obama shouldn’t have been able to use Dr. King’s Bible to be sworn in because King would have been diametrically opposed to the warfare and killing that have been hallmarks of American imperialism. It must be remembered, however, that President Barack Obama is an elected politician, while Dr. King was a crusader, a civil rights chief, who owed nothing to an electorate. He had the freedom to champion what was in his conscience in a way that no politician would be able to do. Obama, on the other hand, must deliver on behalf of his financial backers and others who helped elect him. This is why, no doubt, such a heavy nod was given to the Hispanic community during his inauguration. The chief point that those who most stridently oppose the president, especially those who espouse a strong Black power stance, must realize is that it is impossible, at least in this moment and time, for a sitting president to deliver on their demands. Politics does not work this way; it is the game of compromise, and the compromise that one must make to retain and remain in office is that there must be attempts to appease the opposition. President Obama could never have been elected by Black people alone, and more importantly, he certainly could not proffer a Black power agenda to the American electorate today. To expect that is unreasonable, especially since a Black “agenda” has not yet been crafted. A luta continua.

Even though Lyndon Johnson was president when I was in high school, the memories of participating in high school sports is relatively vivid. So it was sad to read last week there had been a shooting after the Simeon-Morgan Park basketball game. Safety in our city is a growing concern. I bet a lot of people were surprised that someone would be shot to death after a high school basketball game. The reason is not that important because it never is. Most of the time when a killer tells us why he or she did something the reason just doesn’t compute with the normal mind. We do and should applaud those youngsters who are staying out of harm’s way and enjoying themselves by participating in organized sports. Historically and traditionally that has been a way to avoid the troubles of the streets; but that seems to have changed with last Wednesday’s fatal gunfire. It also raises the question if our young people are safe anywhere? The answer is no. How many young people in the last year or two have been sitting in their houses and a bullet found them? The president said last week that as parents and concerned citizens we will not be able to stop every incident of violence. I think we all believe we can stop more than we have.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR For safety’s sake, keep the crowds out Dear Editor:

That is why I think it is a good idea to stop allowing students to attend local basketball and football games. It is a drastic move, and so are the times we are living in now – drastic and fatal. It is obvious the Chicago police are clueless as to how to handle the violence. The mayor is profiling for a national audience and the city council simply doesn’t have the juice. That is why I believe we need to reduce the level of interaction between rival high schools and only have players, coaches, and refs attend the games. The school district would be able to set up live video of the games and everyone who is interested can watch them from home or some site other than where the game is being played. This plan also will eliminate the risk of altercations by fans after the games. That in turn reduces the chances of another fatal shooting. Sure it is nice to hear the cheer and adulation of the crowds, conversely it is excruciating to hear the report of a gunfire. Let’s keep our kids safe.

man, I expect that person to deal with a multitude of issues – issues that affect the district’s employment, educational issues, the welfare system, the national budget, gun violence, and the more complex day-to-day issues that deal with federal funding. Violence seems to be the topic-ofthe-day, and unfortunately, most of the people who are running to replace former Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. are holding meetings and looking at the issue from the rear view mirror. BEYOND THE RHETORIC

Business Tools for Success By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist No business can guarantee success. In fact, the vast majority of business ventures fail by the second year. Yet, entrepreneurship is the “back bone” of our economy and the few who succeed provide over 70% of all new jobs. Some of the factors that can make or break a business should be considered as you plan and build your business venture. When you come up with the idea of creating a business you should first do a feasibility study. Will the market accept this product, service or idea? Make sure you don’t come up with the conclusion until you do due diligence. Will it answer the wants and needs of the consumers? Can the market understand it and react positively? What price will the market bear? Ray Kroc, the founder of McDonald’s Restaurants had five business failures before he found success. Xerox had the rights to the Internet (not Al Gore) and simply gave it away thinking the market had no use for it. If your feasibility study ends up being very positive then it is time for your Business Plan.

Harry C. Alford A Business Plan sets the strategy and guidance for the launch of your business. You cannot get any financing without a convincing Business Plan. Investors, bankers and potential equity partners won’t go to step one without a plan. There must be facts and documentation that can be understood and no “pie in the sky” will make your plan realistic. Every step of the plan must be proven and justified. If you have confidence in your plan then stick with it and don’t

take “no” for an answer. Remember, Fred Smith of FEDEX received an “F” for his business plan while in graduate school. He did not let that stop the implementation of one of the greatest success stories in the history of our capitalistic nation. When my wife, Kay, and I started the National Black Chamber of Commerce we used our own money in the early years. Eventually it grew into the largest Black business association in the world. Once your business is started and is running profitably there are various tools you need to maximize your growth and guarantee a positive future. One important tool is a “Rainy Day Fund.” The economy is not constant and times come when there are many customers who become unemployed or have to cut back on spending. Interest rates on financing may become prohibitive or a major client goes under or falls into bankruptcy. All of that has a devastating affect on a small business. For instance, if you are a federal government contractor and Congress decides to cut back on the budget and cancel contracts (some of which may be yours) it will hit your cash flow and profits

in a terrible way. If you have reserves (rainy day money) you might survive this. If you don’t then failure is around the corner. Another tool is medical insurance for your employees. Rates can really vary. If you have five employees it can range from $400 monthly per employee to $2,000 monthly per employee. That makes a big difference in your “bottom line” – net revenue. It is extremely important to shop around to solicit bids from as many insurance companies as you can find. Other insurances such as Life, Property and Casualty (PNC), Errors and Omissions, Freight and other types have variable rates also. Again, shop around and find the best service and lowest cost for your business. It directly affects your net profit and future of your business. Cost of Goods Sold is a major factor if you are in the retail, manufacturing or distribution business. That can be a big variable and you have to find the best deal for your business and customer base. My sons have a business and they went around the world to find the best and most cost effective manufacturer of the clothing line they sell. Yes, they found that source in Chi-

na and even with the duty involved in the importing it is the best quality and lowest price they could find. Doing this, has assured them of maximizing the profits and pleasing their customers with satisfaction and affordability. One of the most important tools for small business is Legal Services. How do you find quality legal representation and consul? You should not rely on word of mouth, Google or “hit or miss.” The wrong decision can cost you millions of dollars and destroy your business. We live in a litigious society and also negotiation is a critical matter to consider. The National Black Chamber of Commerce endorses the network of high powered law firms and sincere service known as Legal Shield. You might want to look at this option. There is nothing like it and small Black owned firms are signing up with this firm at a record pace. These are some of the important tools. Please consider them. Hands off Malia and Sasha Obama By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist Just when you think leaders of the National Rifle Association can’t stoop any lower, they keep managing to plunge even deeper. This time, they have strayed way over the line of respectability by using Malia and Sasha’s enrollment in Sidwell Friends, a private Quaker school, to malign President Obama over his proposal to place limits on the sale of assault rifles and expand background checks. “Are the president’s kids more important than yours? Then why is he skeptical about putting armed security in our schools when his kids are protected by armed guards at their school? “Mr. Obama demands the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes. But he’s just another elitist hypocrite when it comes to a fair share of security. Protection for their kids. And gun-free zones for ours.” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney was correct when he said in a statement: “Most Americans agree that a president’s children should not be used as pawns in a political fight. But to go so far as to make the safety of the president’s children the subject of an attack ad is reThe Chicago Crusader

pugnant and cowardly.” New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican, said: “To talk about the president’s children or any public officer’s children who have – not by their own choice, but by requirement – to have protection and use that somehow to make a political point I think is reprehensible.” I am tempted to call NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre and his comrades scum. But I’m going to resist the temptation. Not because they don’t fit that description. I’m restraining myself because to call them scum would be an insult to scum. A second NRA ad, running fourand-a-half-minutes, tossed in an image of NBC newsman David Gregory – whose children also attend Sidwell Friends School – for good measure. The narrator in the ad says “Armed Guards — Good enough for the David Gregory’s kids’ school, not for the rest of us. …[The] school Obama’s daughters attend has 11 armed guards.” Not surprisingly, the ad conveniently ignores the fact that the Secret Service is required to protect the president’s children. They protected Chelsea Clinton and Julie Nixon when they attended the school, known as “the Harvard of Washington’s private schools.” Although the original NRA ad

George E. Curry leaves the impression that it is referring to Secret Service agents, the longer version makes it clear that NRA is referencing security guards at the school, which has a lower school campus in Bethesda, Md. and middle and upper schools in northwest Washington,D.C.. The Washington Post’s Fact Checker column awarded the NRA ad four Pinocchios, representing a “whopper” of a lie. The newspaper noted, “…the online directory for Sidwell Friends lists 11 people as working in the Security Department. Five are listed as ‘special police officer,’ while two are listed as ‘on call special police offi-

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

cer,’ which presumably means they do not work full-time. The directory also lists two weekend shift supervisors, one security officer and the chief of security.“ “… But we spoke to parents who said they had never seen a guard on campus with a weapon. And Ellis Turner, associate head of Sidwell Friends, told us emphatically: ‘Sidwell Friends security officers do not carry guns.’” The NRA’s ad claiming that President Obama is “skeptical about putting armed security in our schools” misrepresents his position. The clip was taken out of context from this exchange between the president and David Gregory on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” GREGORY: Should we have an armed guard at every school in the country? That’s what the NRA believes. They told me last week that that could work. OBAMA: I’m not going to prejudge the recommendations that are given to me. I am skeptical that the only answer is putting more guns in schools. And I think the vast majority of the American people are skeptical that that somehow is going to solve our problem. Clearly, the president did not say he was skeptical about placing armed security guards in schools. Instead, he said that is not “the only answer.” Saturday, January 26, 2013

Even more insane, at a press conference, Wayne LaPierre of the NRA asserted that the answer to preventing future incidents like the one at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. is the placement of armed guards in every school. Among the proposals presented by President Obama is providing federal funds to place more officers in schools, if the school requests them. After acting on a specific proposal made by NRA, the gun lobbying organization denounced Obama yet again. After coming under attack by even some conservatives, NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said: “If anyone thinks we’re talking specifically about someone’s children, they’re missing the point completely…”No, that’s exactly the point. Leave those beautiful Obama girls out of your degenerate ad campaigns. George E. Worrill’s World By Dr. Conrad W. Worrill

GARVEY AND FREEING THE AFRICAN MIND (Dr. Conrad Worrill, National Chairman Emeritus of the National Black United Front (NBUF), located at 1809 East 71st Street, Suite 211, Chicago, Illinois, 60649, 773-493-0900, Fax# 773-493-9819, E-mail: nbufchic@sbcglobal.net, Web site: nbufront.org)

Dr. Conrad Worrill In this present era of economic and educational onslaught against the African Community in Amer-

ica, it is important that we understand that the rise of the African Centered Education Movement should be linked to our quest for economic independence. We must free the “African mind” through African Centered Educational activities so that we might better understand the importance of economic self-reliance. One model that we draw strength from in pursuing economic and educational liberation is the model established by the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in the 1920s. The more I read and study about Marcus Garvey, the more I am amazed at the great contributions he made to African people to become a self reliant and self sufficient people. At the core of Marcus Garvey’s program was his urging of African people to acquire education and economic power. As he always started, “A race without power is a race without respect.” When we examine the economic condition of Africans in America, and throughout the world, we find one glaring problem— African people do not control our economic resources at the level we should. This is primarily due to

our miseducation as a people. In a disproportionate manner, African people depend on the European and Asian world for food, clothing, and shelter. More often than not, the European and Asian worlds are the producers, processors, distributors, and wholesalers. African people are the consumers. This was one of the major problems that the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey addressed during his lifetime and that Minister Louis Farrakhan continues to address. As Dr. Tony Martin writes in his book Race First, which is one of the best books written on the works of Marcus Garvey, “Marcus Garvey, unlike his major rivals in the United States, built a mass organization that went beyond civilrights agitation and protest and based itself upon a definite, well thought out program that he believed would lead to the total emancipation of the race from white dominion.” To implement his program, Garvey set up the Negro Factories Corporation (NFC). Its objective was to build and operate factories in the big industrial centers of the United States, Central America, the Caribbean, and Africa. The NFC established a chain of cooperative grocery stores, a restaurant,

a steam laundry, tailor and dressmaking shop, a millinery store, and a publishing house. Mr. Garvey also established a steamship company, The Black Star Line. He envisioned a fleet of steamers carrying passengers and establishing trade among African people of the United States, Central America, the Caribbean, and Africa. In the summer of 1920, Garvey launched his full blown program at the First Annual Convention of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) of which he was the founder and first President General. On August 2, 1920, after a massive parade of thousands of well drilled, uniformed ranks of the UNIA, 35,000 delegates from all over the United States and some twenty-five countries convened at Madison Square Garden, in New York City. It was, according to the New York Times, one of the largest gatherings in the history of the hall. Dr. Martin explains that, “Central to the ideological basis underpinning Garvey’s program was the question of race. For Garvey, the Black man was universally oppressed on racial grounds, and no matter how much people try to shy away from this issue, the fact

is, this is still true today.” As Malcolm X used to say, it was our Blackness “which caused so much hell not our identity as Elks, Masons, Baptists or Methodists.” If we are ever to become a liberated people this idea must be deeply rooted in the day to day organizing and mobilizing of our people as we seek economic and educational liberation. Far too many Africans in America have abandoned this idea in their organizing projects. Mr. Garvey understood that the foundation of our liberation was economic and educational independence based on racial solidarity. There are numerous lessons we can learn from the legacy of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey. Without economic independence tied to the acquisition of political power, African people in America and African people everywhere will continue to be the subjects of the whims of other people. In this regard, Garvey said, “...you can be educated in soul, vision and feeling, as well as in mind. To see your enemy and know him is a part of the complete education of man... Develop yours and you become as great and full of knowledge as the other fellow without entering the classrooms.”

Lance Armstrong was following an American tradition By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist Who is surprised that Lance Armstrong was doping? Who thinks he was the only one? Who is surprised that he used the Oprah Winfrey show as his platform to “come clean”? We are a nation of cheaters and Armstrong is one in a long line of our nation’s cheaters. Indeed the very foundation of our country is the result of cheating. The Pilgrims cheated the Native Americans that befriended them out of their land. Later, the United States Army continued that cheating by slaughtering Native people, kicking them off their land, and consigning them to reservations. As a result of this thievery and chicanery Native American people have the shortest life expectancy of any ethnicity in these United States. Enslaved people were cheated with the fruit of their labor, not to mention their lives and liberty, by our nation’s “peculiar institution.” After slavery was abolished, the cheating continued. The sharecropper system was nothing but an

official method of cheating. Land owned by African Americans was stolen. Those African Americans who managed to amass wealth had to pretend they had less because economic envy sparked the wholesale appropriation of land and communities. Examples include the destruction of Black Wall Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and the 1898 destruction of property (and life) in Wilmington, N.C. Some historians estimate that there were more

200 of these kinds of incidents. We cheated Mexico by appropriating half their land in a murky “trade” through the Louisiana Purchase. Now we have the nerve to talk about “illegal immigration” because people are returning to land that was once stolen from them. And daily, employers cheat undocumented people because without legal documents, they have no bargaining power against unscrupulous employers. Cheating? George W. Bush and his minions cheated Al Gore of the presidency in 2000, and the Supreme Court aided and abetted him in this cheating. Imagine the course of history had we a kinder, gentler president who might not read a children’s book upside down in the moments before September 11? Let’s not even talk about the theft implicit in the banking bailout. These banks were lent money to aid in economic recovery by lending money, but instead of lending, they’ve tightened up credit requirements, making it more difficult for some people to borrow. And figuring out ways to cheat on one’s taxes may be one of the great American

pastimes. There are more ways to cheat than putting your sticky fingers on things that don’t belong to you. African American men are cheated of their dignity and freedom of mobility, whenever empty taxis speed by them. African American women are cheated of the ability to see themselves reflected in the public space when advertisers treat us as stereotypes. And racism cheats us of the ability to have equality of opportunity. I’m not at all condoning Lance Armstrong’s doping, and I fully agree with the decisions to pull his titles and banish him from biking. Yet there is much irony in the way people are handling this. The Today Show had cheater Pete Rose commenting on Lance Armstrong’s cheating. That’s like asking the fox to comment when his brother breaks into the hen house, or like asking George W. Bush to comment on an election. And not to play the “race” game, but don’t you think all hell would break loose if this were an African American athlete? We send young people mixed

messages when we both say “play fair” and “winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.” We live in a win at any cost, winner take all, society. Lance Armstrong wanted to win so he doped up, and some of those around him probably did the same. No excuses. But in a winner take all culture, what do we expect? Now Armstrong has humbled himself by admitting he was wrong after adamantly denying he was doping. Why now… to clean up his name, to get back in the game, to keep raising money for his cancer-fighting organization? Like the foundation of our nation’s culture, though, Armstrong is both a liar and a cheat. It is a shame that Lance Armstrong chose to cheat during his biking career. If we had to recite a litany of cheaters, we’d have to start with the Pilgrims, the Founding Fathers that condoned slavery, and move on from there. President being sworn in putting on the dog for our first Black President. In spite of those who don’t like it, dey might as well lump it, cause for the next four years the address for the Obamas is 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, D.C.

Although we (Black folk) were just sort of lumped into the category of have nots and such we still had a great of deal of pride when all ‘dem folks came out to see him take the oath for a second time on Monday. Although it was Martin Luther King Day, a national holiday and bless him (King) he is honored with a monument in the nation’s capitol and we all know he paid the ulti-

mate sacrifice for the many gains we have made including a Black President (I know only ½ Black), I thought the President was still scared to mention US. He seemed much more comfortable talking about the gays and the Hispanics. I know we ain’t the ones that gave him all of that money, but we gave him almost all of our votes (more than 90%), each election. Don’t that count for something? But back to the Black pride Ima felt. Even more than dying, more older Americans fear outliving their savings, recent surveys found. Running out of money is a top retirement concern, especially as people are living longer. One smart answer: an annuity that pays you as long as you live. *** Most people know about annuities that start to pay off when you retire. Some annuities are purchased by younger folks who start saving early; others are funded with retirement payouts.

What’s good to know before you owe on a car Buy Here Pay Here dealerships seldom a good deal for consumers By Charlene Crowell NNPA Columnist A century ago, the prevalence of public transportation enabled many Americans to take a bus or trolley car to work, school, shopping or health care providers. Today, many communities lack these public services and consumers instead rely on a personal vehicle to manage their day to day concerns. Beyond mobility, owning a car has become a gateway to economic opportunity. Buying a car is more than finding a car you like. Finding the best financing for that car is just as important. How consumers shop for vehicles and financing was the focus of a late 2012 survey sponsored by the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL). Additional research on auto financing and sales is included in CRL’s latest research report, The State of Lending in America and its Impact on U.S. Households, (http://www.responsiblelending.org/stateof-lending/). Consumer replies to the survey

revealed that a growing number of all consumers were turning to “Buy Here, Pay Here” (BHPH) auto lots. BHPH dealers typically offer over-priced used cars and process all of their loans in-house. As a result, customers are required to make their payments at the dealership, as often as once a week. In these types of sales, consumers with low-wealth and low credit scores become targets for predatory lending. CRL’s survey found that Black consumers accounted for 41 percent of BHPH customers. Of these consumers, 74 percent were unaware of mark-ups in car sales and finance, and fewer than half negotiated the cost of their monthly payment or cost of the vehicle. And according to CRL, “Most BHPH dealers do not post prices on the lot. The dealer first assesses what kind of weekly or bi-weekly payment the consumer can be expected to pay. Then the consumer is told which car or cars are available to them and the price is set.” The State of Lending report also found that most consumers are unaware that vehicle repossessions occur in 25-30 percent of these sales. CRL found that 70 percent of BHPH dealers install

Charlene Crowell devices that can prevent car engines from starting and/or others that track the car’s movement. Should a customer become late or miss a payment, these devices help the dealer to quickly repossess the vehicle. Typically most consumers are pre-occupied with obtaining personal transportation with what appears to be an affordable, regular payment. Other factors such

as the annual percentage rate (APR), down payments, or the cost of add-on services are often ignored by the consumer – to the advantage of the dealer. By maximizing profits on these older, high-mileage vehicles, most consumers do not realize how bad a deal they made until the car is repossessed. The report further states, “The lack of transparency and regulation in auto finance has allowed different predatory practices to thrive throughout the years, creating more expensive and unsustainable loans for consumers. . . . If the dealer controls the financing and has the ability to adjust the terms of that financing, then the dealer has more opportunity to sell and finance additional insurance or warranty products. . . . Even if a consumer has financing in hand, the dealer will try to find a way to convince the consumer to opt for dealer financing, which increases the profit potential in the deal.” CRL advises that with any car purchase, if possible, consumers should try to secure financing with a bank or credit union before arriving at the dealership. In this way, the consumer gains

leverage when negotiating with the dealer. Car buyers should also remember that nearly every aspect of their car loan is negotiable, including the sales price, interest rate, trade-in value, length of the loan and prices of add-on products. For BHPH dealers in particular, consumers should first pick a car, negotiate the sales price and negotiate the value of a trade-in vehicle. Applying for financing with the dealer before these details are resolved affords dealers an advantage that seldom benefits consumers. When household budgets are tight and access to credit is even tighter, consumers would be wise to ask enough questions to gain a clear understanding of the terms and conditions of all financial transactions. When a vehicle is the difference between getting or keeping a job, it is especially in the consumer’s best interest to become as knowledgeable as possible. Did your dollars contribute to the successes? Remember, that’s something to consider, because your consumer dollars make these rankings possible; which, of course, influence the decision-makers. Our brand new year is in full swing – full of promise and new beginnings. Even as we move forward with shining, new resolve, it’s always fun to look back at our consumer behaviors and trends over the previous 12 months. Let’s start with how we rang in the New Year. No matter how you brought in 2013, chances are it involved an effervescent, grown-up libation. You are not alone. It will probably come as no surprise to you that consumers around the world celebrated with a lot of cork popping on New Year’s Eve. Here in the U.S., we enjoyed our bubbly throughout the year. Sparkling wine sales are strong, rising 4.6 percent over the last 52 weeks. It will also come as no surprise that the data shows that the last eight weeks of the year – the holiday season – account for onethird of annual sales. Our palates and our pocketbooks have an array of choices in the sparkling wine category in both country of origin (real champagne only comes from the champagne region of France; other countries, like ours, use the Méthode Champenoise) and price point. The biggest sparkling wine seller throughout the year is the $10-25 category. However, the report shows that

folks are willing to spring for a little more over the holidays, as sparkling wines in the $20-$60 range triple in sales during this time versus the rest of the year. Let’s see how some of your favorites stacked up in 2012: Prosecco: This Italian favorite, averaging $11.78 a bottle, has grown almost 40 percent over the last 52 weeks; garnering 8 percent of sparkling wine sales, up two points from this time last year. COMMUNITY Violence stops here contest winners from Institute for Positive Living Institute for Positive Living/Lawless Gardens Male Mentoring Program Youth Win Second Place for their “Stop the Violence Campaign” video

Mayor Rahm Emanuel congratulated youth from the Institute for Positive Living (IPL)/Chicago Lawless Garden Male Mentoring Program on winning second place in the Violence Stops Here Contest during a lunch on January 6, 2013 at the IPL Technology Center at 3620 S. Rhodes. The Violence Stops Here Contest was sponsored by Violence Stops Here, a community-driven new media campaign that spearheads the presentation of relevant messaging for positive influence. It combines social media technologies and grassroots collaboration to empower residents, community organizations and businesses to promote responsible and safety in the community. The Violence Stops Here Contest invited youth from Chicago’s Southside communities to demonstrate through original spoken-word or song, their ideas illustrating how they view non-violence in their community. In preparation for the contest, the IPL/Lawless Garden Male Mentoring Program brought together a group of young students calling themselves Team Stop the Violence. The team wrote, edited and produced a lively “Stop the Violence Campaign” video featuring resi-

dents from Lawless Garden. The video, which can be viewed on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUBb7dN67_k or at http://www.violencestops.com, sends a strong anti-violence message. It starts with the camera panning the Lawless Gardens high-rise as the voice of a news anchor states, “We are going to take you now to Chicago where this past weekend at least 52 people were shot, eight of them killed in a wave of violence across the city.” As the video progresses there are scenes of children playing, the camera panning in on a stop sign, and then the youth coming together as one voice, with one message in an original music rap that goes: “Stop, Stop, Stop, Stop, Stop the Violence!” Members of Team Stop the Violence who got a chance to meet Emanuel on January 6th included Kevin Blackwell, Trevion Conner, Aderral King, Shakira Matthew, Antwan McCray, Dearis Mosses, Dedria Mosses, Dedrick Mosses, Javanta Tolbert and Thomas Watson. The Mayor came out to meet the students personally. During lunch he talked to the students about school and their neighborhood. “We are so proud of our Male Mentoring Program members,” states IPL Founder and President Marrice Coverson. “The youth in this program are trying to do positive things in their lives and in their community. Winning second place in this contest helps them know that they can and will succeed. By

CSO’s Asian tour to be led by Osmo Vänskä and Lorin Maazel Riccardo Muti’s illness prevents his participation After last weekend’s edition of The Chicago Crusader went to press, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association (CSOA) announced that Music Director Riccardo Muti is unable to participate in the Orchestra’s upcoming tour to Asia as previously planned. After returning to Italy last week suffering from the flu, Maestro Muti sought further medical care. He was subsequently diagnosed with an inguinal hernia, which required surgical treatment as soon as possible. His doctors determined that to delay the surgery until after the scheduled tour to Asia could lead to complications. According to a CSO spokesperson Muti, 71, had surgery without complications Monday morning, January 21, in his native Italy. A CSO statement

Riccardo Muti Monday afternoon said that Muti’s surgery “went smoothly and he is already resting comfortably and is scheduled to return to his home in Ravenna on Tuesday.”

Substituting for Maestro Muti is Osmo Vänskä, music director of the Minnesota Orchestra who will conduct the performances in Taipei and Taiwan at the Chiang KaiShek National Concert Hall at the tour’s beginning on January 25 and 26. Lorin Maazel, music director of the Munich Philharmonic will conduct concerts in Hong Kong at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre as part of the Hong Kong Arts Festival; one concert each in Shanghai (Oriental Art Centre), Beijing (National Center for the Performing Arts) and Tianjin (Tianjin Grand Theater) in China; and two in Seoul, South Korea at the Seoul Arts Center to conclude the tour. Repertoire for the tour includes two programs: January 25 will feature Mozart’s Symphony No. 41, K.551 (Jupiter) —replacing originally scheduled music by Stravinsky and Busoni—and Brahms’

Symphony No. 2. CSO Concertmaster Robert Chen will appear as soloist in Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto; The January 26 program consists of Verdi’s Overture to I vespri siciliani, Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 (Italian) and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 (Eroica). Violinist Maxim Vengerov will join the CSO as soloist in Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. CSOA President Deborah F. Rutter commented, “The thoughts and good wishes of the entire CSO family are with our beloved Maestro Muti as he undergoes surgery. Naturally, we are disappointed that he was not able to lead the Orchestra here in Chicago and will be unable to join us on our tour beginning next week. However, we completely understand that this is a health situation beyond his control and eagerly await his return to Chicago in April. The CSO family

is deeply grateful to Maestro Maazel for assisting the CSO on this tour.” In a written statement from Italy, Maestro Muti said, “I feel very sad, frustrated and upset to leave my wonderful musicians and audiences in Chicago and on this very important tour that I was expecting with great anticipation. I look forward to returning to Chicago in April when we can once again make beautiful music together.”

says, ‘By the time surely man is in loss, except those who believe and do good and enjoin one another to truth and enjoin one another to patience.’ The time will judge our actions and if our actions are not correspondent to the time we will continue down the road of intense regret over great loss. ” To view the premiere message in its entirety visit www.- noi.org.

(Continued from page 3) ball game between Simeon and Morgan Park was being played. He said Lawson was outside talking to a group of girls when Gilbert and McNabb approached. He said Gilbert and McNabb were arrested while trying to flee the scene in a maroon Jeep on the south side of the Chicago State campus. He said detectives found gunpowder residue on Gilbert’s left hand. Bullet shell casings found at the scene matched a gun found near the scene and witnesses also identified the two in a photo lineup, he said. Several students at Morgan Park informed the Crusader about Lawson’s alleged involvement in the drug trade. They said it was no secret he was in a gang and sold drugs in the area of 115th and Ashland, not far from the school. Lawson’s family could not be reached for comment but have told media outlets Lawson was a good kid and they felt safe about him going to the game because it was being held on the CSU campus. Marielle Sainvilus, a spokesperson for CPS, said she can

$1.7 Million in NEA grants to assist U. S. orchestras (Cont’d. from page 14) amount of $10,000, while Art Works (Part One) grants varied in amount). Art Works (Part One) grants totaled $1,450,000 for 42 distinct orchestra projects while Challenge America grants totaled $240,000 for 24 orchestra projects. Future FY13 grants will be announced for Art Works (Part Two) in 2013.

Orchestral programs funded by these NEA grants include: The November 2013 Texas premiere of a new concerto for electric violin composed by Kenji Bunch and featuring Youth Orchestra of San Antonio and soloist Tracy Silverman that include free workshops for economically disadvantaged youth in elementary, middle and high schools; young string players

who participate in the Orchestra’s free, daily afterschool music program and their families will also receive complimentary tickets to the concert. A National Philharmonic Orchestra concert on March 2, 2013 featuring violinist Elena Urioste who will also provide master classes for students at William E. Doar Jr. Public Charter School for the Performing Arts, in Wash-

ington DC’s Ward Five. Concerts for a variety of populations, including adults with disabilities and elementary students, by the Adrian (Michigan) Symphony Orchestra as well as a free rehearsal open to the public in advance of the orchestra’s allBeethoven concert on April 20, 2013. neither confirm nor deny if Lawson was a student or release any educational records. It is not known whether or not Lawson or the suspects ever entered the arena. CPS security had all who entered go through metal detectors. It is not yet known what McNabb, Gilbert and Lawson were arguing about before the shots rang out. But a police source said allegedly McNabb was the leader of the gang Lawson was a member of and the argument could have been about money or a drug deal. The source continued by saying Chicago State is considered neutral territory and is seen as an island of safety surrounded by the communities of Burnside, Rosemoor and West Ches-

terfield, all of which are having problems with gang shootings. The shooting happened in a parking lot just north of the arena where Morgan Park and Simeon were involved in a heated basketball game. At the end of the game, some tempers flared between the two teams and a minor altercation broke out with a player from Simeon slapping a player from Morgan Park. The two teams were quickly separated although tension in the arena remained high. Investigators now believe that the incident at the end of the game had nothing to do with the murder of Lawson, according to the police source.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Continued from page 4) Not once have I heard any of them put forth anything that resembles a strategy for combatting the rash of shootings and killings in our community. The candidates seem to be parroting one another. These candidates also act as though they won’t have to interact with other Congressmen from different parts of the country – congress people who may not at all be interested in the matters plaguing part of this district-nameThe Chicago Crusader

ly Chicago. Nearly 4,000 bills were introduced in Congress last year. For this discussion, it doesn’t matter that fewer than 70 were actually passed. The chief point is anyone going to Congress from any state needs to have a broad perspective about issues in and outside of the district. It is hard to grab onto a reason to vote for anyone right now because either they are saying nothing or they’re talking about something alder-

men are chatting about. It is a lack of understanding about the complexity of being a member of Congress, at least in my opinion. The election is about a month away and if we have not heard anything from a candidate by now, that person really needs to tuck his or her ego away and drop out of the race. Maybe they think enough family and friends will vote for them, and even if that is the case, those aren’t enough votes to make them a winner. The candidates obviously

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

will try to maximize their coffers by advertising primarily on the television. That means a lot of voters will not get their messages, given some folk don’t watch television, others don’t have cable television (network television will be too expensive). I saw supporters for one candidate standing on 95th and Stony Island holding placards for that candidate. At the same time, I saw drivers swerving to avoid those holding the placards. I suspect it was a good idea at the time for the candidate, but it looked

like a waste of time and money. From the lack of communication, the mis-communica-

tion and limited communication; it seems like none-ofthe-above is the best choice. Harvey Ketchum

Keep that 2013 fitness resolution in place by changing up routine and diet Dr. Ian Smith and fitness model LaRitta Webb share their healthy lifestyle recopies By J. Coyden Palmer Keeping to that promise you made to start 2013 in the best shape of your life could be starting to wane as most resolutions begin to fizzle say fitness experts. Never fear, Dr. Ian Smith, best known as host of VH1’s Celebrity Fit Club and Chicago-based model and personal trainer LaRitta Webb say structuring your diet and workout routine to fit your personal goals will keep you from giving up, which is usually caused by boredom. Dr. Smith’s new book, “Shred: The Revolutionary Diet-Six Weeks, Four Inches, Two Sizes” integrates all of his strategic dieting tools into one plan. A native of Danbury, Connecticut, Smith said changing up your diet once you have reached a plateau in weight loss will allow you to lose more and reach your fitness goals. This week the book reached #1 on the New York Times Best Sellers list. The six-week cycle plan contains inexpensive foods that you can get from your local grocer. “You have to eat every three to four hours so you get four meals and three snacks a day so you are never hungry,” Dr. Smith explained. “By spacing out your meals you keep your hormone levels stable and that prevents spikes in your insulin level that promotes weight gain. The second concept is called diet confusion, which is similar to muscle confusion exercises for weightlifters. In diet confusion you switch all of your foods and times you eat and it keeps your metabolism very high. In essence you are tricking your body.” Smith said his program is meant to be doable for everyone, including serious athletes, weekend warriors, housewives, inactive youth or even senior citizens. He said exercises at home that get the heart rate up like jumping rope, walking up and down stairs or jumping jacks make the program adaptable to your particular lifestyle. Smith said the type of foods he recommends for meals are broccoli, brown rice, salad and salmon to name a few. Items like yogurt, fruit, nuts or vegetables like carrot sticks, grape tomatoes and celery are excellent snack foods. Webb, a native of Gary, Indiana and former player for the Chicago Bliss of the Lingerie Football League, has been a fitness model for almost four years. A personal trainer based out of Chicago and The Chicago Crusader

national bodybuilding competitor, Webb said establishing realistic fitness goals and going into your workouts with a mindset that you are making a lifestyle change is where most people find success. She said a change in diet, which is important, will only get you short-term results. “You have to be willing to break old habits and go into 2013 with the philosophy that you want to reinvent yourself, which means transitioning your mind and

Dr. Ian Smith body,” Webb said. “The diet is the more difficult part to change because it’s a psychological challenge.” Webb said African American women mostly say they want to work on their stomach, legs and hips. She said Black women also buy into the myth that if they workout they will lose their booty and their boyfriends and husbands will be mad. “I say to that nonsense that my teammates and I all look feminine and we have those curves,” said Webb with a laugh. “You have to train effectively in the right way. Your best friend exercises for women to keep that butt and curves should be squats and lunges. Don’t be afraid to do these exercises with weight because they will help build lean muscle and burn fat.” In terms of the issue of Black women and hair, Webb said she does not let her hair limit any-

thing that she does. She said her health is more important than her hair and that too many African American women are lying in a casket with their hair done at an early age because they did not have good health habits. “There are plenty of ways you can accommodate your hair. That shouldn’t even be an excuse anymore.” Webb also said giving your body enough rest time between workouts and drinking plenty of water will give you better and faster results. She said the body burns its most calories when you are sleeping and muscle tissues repair themselves and grow during rest periods. Webb is running a 90-day special for 2013 and moving forward. It is a 21 Day Diet, 3 days a week workout with cardio programming for $200/mth. Clients will have to send front and back pictures along with your weight, every 2 wks and updates to your programming will be made accordingly. For more information you can contact Webb at her website www.livelearnlovefitness.com or send her a note on Facebook at LaRitta Webb. Dr. Smith’s book, “Shred: The Revolutionary Diet-Six Weeks, Four Inches, Two Sizes” sells online from anywhere between $1217 online and can be found at bookstores throughout the country.
