Nation of Islam works to restore peace By Wendell Hutson The wave of violence in Chicago this year, which so far has claimed more than 300 lives, has prompted the Nation of Islam (NOI) to respond with its message of peace and non-violence.
The national organization headquartered in Chicago and led by Minister Louis Farrakhan, is known for such things as empowering Blacks to start their own businesses and Black men providing for and leading their families. These days, the (NOI), whose members
surpass 1 million, is working more to help crime-plagued communities deal with shootings that have killed and injured many Black men. And since June, when shootings started to soar, each Monday the NOI has dispensed men to walk through effected

neighborhoods to distribute literature about non-violence and talk to residents to see what assistance, if any, it can lend. The NOI has deployed men to walk mainly through neighborhoods on the South and West Sides, whose population is majority Black. “We follow the problem wherever that may lead us,” said Minister Ishmael Muhammad, who handles a lot of the dayto-day operations in the absence of Farrahkan. “As long as violence is stripping communities of peace and harmony we will stay in those communities to do what we can to help.” Every Monday the NOI conducts a men’s training class at its mosque, 7351 S. Stony Island Ave., where men learn, among other things, better ways to be fathers, husbands and peacemakers. These men whose numbers exceed 100, are called the “Fruit of Islam.” They can be found around 4 p.m. every Monday dressed in suits, bow-ties with fresh haircuts (despite the weather) walking through high-crime communities, such as Auburn Gresham, Englewood and Roseland on the South Side, and Austin and North Lawndale on the West Side, where most residents are Black and households are low-income, according to census data. “So theoretically they [Fruits of Islam] are applying what they have learned in the classroom out on the street,” Muhammad, a husband and father of eight, asserted. “Remember, the fruit is the best part of the tree. It [training class] is something every man who joins the Nation of Islam must (Continued on page 2)

Emotions fuel second CPS commission meeting
Bates Foundation donates $50,000 for breast cancer awareness
At the first public hearing where citizens were allowed to ask questions and voice their opinions about the possible closing or consolidation of dozens of schools, angry parents questioned the sincerity of the commission, stated their mistrust of Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and demanded an alternative to what is being considered. More than 100 people turned out to the meeting at Salem Baptist Church recently, where they roasted those in attendance of the nine-member panel commissioned by CPS CEO Dr. Barbara Byrd-Bennett. Among the concerns mentioned were students having to travel through rival gang territory, longer commute times in general and the disruption of communities. Frank Clark, chairman of the commission,

said that much to the disbelief of many in the community, there is no list of schools slated to be closed or consolidated. Clark also defended the independence of the commission and shot down claims by Chicago Teachers Union Vice President Jesse Sharkey that the commission is loaded with “political hacks.” Clark said he understood why there was mistrust from the public, but also believes it is time to heal old wounds and move forward on a very serious issue. “Despite anything that has happened in the past, we can’t ignore the fact that CPS is facing some dire financial times for now and the next few years,” Clark said. “We can’t get around that, so we as a whole are going to have to come up with a responsible way to address the problem.” But getting people to believe the seriousness (Continued on page 3)

Community groups are hopeful the business will spur more economic development in the area. “I am ecstatic about the endless opportunities Salaam brings to the Auburn Gresham communi-
ty. We now have a banquet facility in the community that is Black-owned,” said Carlos Nelson, executive director for the Greater Auburn-Gresham Development Corp., a non-profit. Still, for its part, Muhammad said the NOI would continue its quest to make neighborhoods safe and to educate residents about how to stay safe while dealing with violence. “Our purpose is to be an outreach for the community, to help where we can and to spread our message of peace, responsibility and entrepreneurship,” added Muhammad. Funeral home honors congressman with service award By Wendell Hutson Calahan Funeral Home, a Blackowned business in the Englewood community on the South Side, hosted its 4th Annual Giving of Celebration event on Saturday and honored U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush (D-1st Dist.) with a Lifetime Achievement Award. “It feels strange receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from a
funeral director,” Rush jokingly said as he accepted the award. “I have long believed that everyone has a role to serve in this world and God has chosen the role of public servant for me. It is through God’s grace and mercy that I am able to help others and serve the community as a member of Congress. And for that I thank God and I thank you [the public] for allowing me to serve you in this capacity.”

Charter official says there is no schools closing list By J. Coyden Palmer
member of this commission seen any prescribed list of schools designated to be closed,” Clark said. “We have no list. No one here has seen any list and if someone told me there was a list in the other room I would tell them to tear it
A list of schools distributed by a charter school organization that has caused distress in the community because it is believed to be a list of CPS schools targeted for closing or consolidation is misleading. The Crusader has confirmed that the listing of 80 schools by the United Neighborhood Organization (UNO) was never released by the Chicago Public Schools and the source of the list said it was only being used as a promotional tool. In their first public response to the issue, Ray Quintanilla, a spokesperson for UNO, said the list being circulated came from a brochure of an event the organization held on Oct. 2. UNO hosted a screening of the movie “Won’t Back Down.” Quintanilla said after the movie there was a discussion period for about 400 attendees. He said the list was part of an exercise conducted after the screening and was in no way meant as anything official. “We put together some materials, in a standard yellow envelope with a couple pieces of paper inside,” Quintanilla explained. “One of them was a printout of a list of schools that are the lowest performing schools according to CPS’s own website. For the purpose of the discussion we picked 80 schools and said ‘here are some of the lowest performing schools in Chicago’ by CPS standards.” Quintanilla said he and others at UNO are miffed that the innocence of the list has been turned into many believing UNO has an ac-
tual list of schools being targeted by CPS or other charter organizations. He said UNO does not have the authority or access to release such a list. Rebecca Carroll, spokesperson for CPS, told the Crusader from Spring- field recently that there is no list. Without blaming the organization for their event, she said the UNO list has caused “unnecessary distress” in the community at a time when CPS and schools CEO Dr. Barbara Bennett-Boyd are trying to heal past wounds and move forward with what will be a difficult process. “No such list exists - it simply doesn’t exist,” according to Carroll. “We will not have a list until the commission on school utilization completes its work in March. I know that the CTU and others have been sending around that list that UNO has on hand - but it’s a list of schools that has nothing to do with schools being closed, but has been passed off as such. Whatever we can do to help reinforce that this list is not a school action list would bring a tremendous amount of peace of mind to communities.” Frank Clark, chairperson of an independent commission put together by Byrd-Bennett to get community input on the sensitive matter, said emphatically on Nov. 26 there is no list. Clark and state Sen. Iris Martinez, who is also on the commission, said the issue has gotten so out of hand that people are now questioning the integrity of the commission. “I have not seen nor has any other

up because it would serve no purpose here. The credibility of all of us is on line here. We’re all established people here and we’ll all tell you the same thing; we have seen no list.” The Crusader contacted the
Chi- cago Teachers Union for a response, but our calls were not returned before deadline. CPS is facing a billion dollar budget shortfall and the closings or consolidation of dozens of schools is something being researched.
Emotions fuel second CPS commission meeting (Continued from page 1) of the problem or that the possibility of shuttering schools is going to help solve CPS’s budget crisis is another matter. Speaking with lots of emotion, many said with all that has happened in the past, they are skeptical why CPS is coming to the community now to ask for input, when in the past, CPS just did whatever it wanted to do. “I trust you no further than I can throw you,” said resident Ronald Jackson. “I understand that the CPS CEO’s of the past are gone and there is even a new mayor, but there are still people at CPS who were involved with floating past failed plans to renovate and rehab our schools. They closed and consolidated schools because of what they said were ‘academic issues.’ And many of those same schools that were set for ‘turnaround’ are still performing poorly.” Clark responded to Jackson that the commission is listening and there are many valid points that must be considered. Local School Council representatives at small schools are concerned that decisions will be based off sheer numbers. CPS announced schools that will be closed or consolidated will be based off utilization
needs. Neil school in the Chatham community has a small population but serves children with physical handicaps and special education needs. Tiye Hayes DeVore, sits on the council at Neil. DeVore said the uncertainty of the future has many parents and staff members on edge. “We’re happy that the deadline has been extended to March 31st but that the same time it is also dragging out the wait time,” DeVore said. The deadline to announce which schools CPS could close or consolidate was originally December 1. But Byrd-Bennett successfully lobbied legislators last week to move the date until March 31. Gov. Pat Quinn signed the bill changing state law. In exchange Byrd-Bennett announced CPS would not close any more schools for five years beginning in 2014, however, an option that will allow the district to shake schools up for academic reasons remained. Sharkey said he is disappointed that CPS will still be able to go forward with its yet unannounced plans for next year. CTU had asked for a one-year moratorium on the closings or consolidation of any schools so the situation could be fully investigated. Clark said that is not possible based Saturday, December 8, 2012
on the severity of the problems. “I think we would all love to have a year to look at this thing, but the situation just won’t allow it,” Clark said. Some attendees said currently the community is in stand-by mode because there is no list of schools. But Maryann Lawson-Mack said once a list is released is when you will see the full weight of the community’s feelings come to the surface. “Right now we can’t put a particular face on this issue so to speak,” Lawson-Mack told the Crusader. “But when people find out their child’s school will be no more, then you are talking about people trying to figure out if the new school will be safe, how far it will be and what is the quality of education at that school. Everyone is concerned about safety because all we hear and see on the news is about shootings. Moving and closing schools are going to disrupt local communities and that will change the safety aspect…that’s where people will draw the line about their kids.” The next meeting is scheduled for Friday Dec. 7 at Marquette Park, 6743 S. Kedzie. The meeting will be from 7 to 9 p.m. 3
OPINION
EDITORIAL THE FISCAL CLIFFHANGER America is at a crossroads; difficult times are ahead if our leadership is not able to avert a so-called “fiscal cliff” by the end of 2012. It is interesting that this issue is loosely correlated with a doomsday 2012 scenario. Many people, because of the Mayan calendar’s ending of a cycle, are preparing for the worst. There is talk of major natural catastrophes and more. To be sure, whether or not the other predictions pan out, a fiscal cliff would result in a very real crisis in America and just about everyone stands to be impacted by it. According to an online article by Thomas Kenny entitled “What is the Fiscal Cliff?,” the “fiscal cliff” is a term coined to represent the challenge that the government will face if key decisions are not made related to the Budget Control Act of 2011. Basically, by December 31, 2012 at midnight, the temporary payroll tax cuts started in 2011 will end, resulting in an additional 2% tax increase for workers. Other tax breaks that were set during 2001 and 2003 would end, as well as certain tax breaks for businesses. Also, at this time, taxes related to Obamacare will shift into gear. Spending cuts that were agreed upon as part of a debt ceiling deal made in 2011 will go into effect, and the result would be deep cuts in over 1,000 government programs, according to Barrons, including Medicare and the defense budget. There are no quick fixes for this situation. One of the major sticking points is taxes on the wealthiest Americans. In this regard, not only is the looming crisis one of a fiscal nature, it is also a philosophical crisis gnawing at the very foundation of our democracy. It is a philosophical conundrum, and it boils down to this: should wealthy Americans be willing to make compromises so that the entire nation can benefit, or will they stubbornly hang onto every cent without regard to what happens to the rest of America? Looked at in another way - should those who have more give more? It seems like the logical answer in a caring society would be a resounding YES. Some of those who are in that category, like President Obama, however, feel that they should give more because they have more to give. Still, others among the wealthy class have a different opinion. When viewed with a non-moral eye, those who are among the top earners have a right to keep what they have earned, and this is no doubt what many of them feel. On the other hand, there are wealthy individuals who do not pay as much in taxes as those in the lower and middle classes. For example, a popular story is circulating that the secretary to a billionaire mogul pays more taxes than her boss. The bottom line is that no matter what is done, someone will have to be willing to make sacrifices. Pundits say that the result of the current laws going into effect if nothing is done can result in a new recession. Unemployment may also rise, with a loss of millions of jobs. Republicans want to cut spending and avoid raising taxes, and Democrats want a combination of spending cuts and tax increases. Hopefully, Republicans will come to their senses and realize that it would not be a good idea to throw out the baby with the bathwater. A balanced approach of spending cuts and tax increases would be the best strategy. Let’s hope that cool logic trumps partisan bickering regarding this very important matter. As the saying goes, “You can pay now, or you can pay later,” let’s avoid the fiscal cliff!
We know that in his run up to winning the last mayoral election, Rahm Emanuel spent as little time as possible in the Black community. We also know that he won just about every Black ward in the city. His first proposed budget got unanimous council approval – even among the Black aldermen. In short order it is clear Black people have been supportive of the mayor. I am hard-pressed to identify what the mayor has done specifically for the Black community. Emanuel clearly lost sight of the support from the community when last week during an announcement about increasing Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) fares he said in a very condescending way that folks who couldn’t afford the new rates should drive. It was callous for the man to ignore the fact that more than 10 percent of Chicagoans live in poverty. For that group and a large percentage of other locals the option of driving instead of using public transportation does not exist. These are the people who are being squeezed by the increased fares and it wouldn’t have hurt the mayor to acknowledge our financial pain, rather than be so flippant about the new rates.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR How quickly Rahm forgot… if he ever knew Dear Editor:
Every time the cost of something goes up it means poor people have new decisions. Some price increases mean we have to make a choice about how many meals we can have per day or if the only meal a child gets is the free lunch at school. Poor people aren’t stupid. We understand that prices can’t remain the same on things forever. At the same time, we understand that we do make contributions to this city and at the very least the person who is in charge, the one who was voted in by more poor people than rich people, can acknowledge that he at least recognizes the financial hardships his decision places on us. He obviously is not a mayor of all the people. I will remember that when it is time for the elections. Willie Smith

BEYOND THE RHETORIC
Trouble on the Mighty Mississippi By Harry C. Alford The Mississippi River is a great blessing from God. Besides being the largest river in our nation it is a major vehicle of commerce. It physically borders the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana. In addition to that, its tributaries reached out to a total of 31 states. A significant amount of ports handle the robust amount of shipping that occurs 24/7 on this magnificent consortium of water. A few years ago, the Asian Carp invaded the Mississippi River through fishing farms that flooded into the river. There was movement from some groups to cut off the Illinois river from flowing from the Mississippi River into Lake Michigan to prevent further spread of the fish. We joined in the fight against this radical solution. Eventually they found ways to stop the spreading of this unwanted species without killing commerce throughout the Midwest and Great Lakes regions. There was just no way they were going to shut down any part of the Mississippi River. That’s how important it is. Now we have a different crisis.
Harry C. Alford The area along the northern end of the river is facing a drought. It rivals the drought of 1989. It is threatening reduced commerce along the river. The reduced depth of the River is making shipping somewhat prohibitive. Companies in the navigation industry along these rivers are now shipping less material by “light loading” fleets which make each load less profitable. In addition to the low levels of water, rocks known
as pinnacles are emerging through the shallow levels and risking serious damage to the vessels. If the Mississippi River becomes closed to commerce, that will also affect shipping on the Ohio and Missouri rivers and make the Great Lakes a one way shipping vehicle. It would halt hundreds of millions of tons of essential goods and commodities such as corn, grain, coal, petroleum, chemicals and many other products important to the national economy. Cargo valued at over $7 billion, including 300 million bushels of agricultural products and 3.8 million tons of coal could experience serious delays that will have a ripple effect and damage all of our local communities. Let’s not overlook the likelihood of five million barrels of domestically produced crude oil not being shipped and purchases of imported crude oil will increase by about $550 million as a result. This situation is a job killer! Loss of jobs and skyrocketing of consumer prices will further hurt our weak economy. However, there is a simple solution to this state of misfortune. All the President has to do is to instruct the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to continue, in fact increase, the flow
of waters coming from the Missouri River dams and reservoirs. Right now the Corps is scheduled to actually stop these flows of water by mid-December through the spring. They aren’t scheduled to dredge and remove the rock pinnacles located between St. Louis and Cairo, Ill. until late spring. Shutting the water flows now and waiting to dredge and remove the pinnacles is a “blueprint” for disaster. The President can do this by simply declaring an emergency and implement the “Stafford Act.” If there ever was an “emergency” this is it! The protocol for having the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manage the water system of the Mississippi River was created as a result of the Great Flood of 1927. Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover became immensely popular for successfully managing this task. It was the biggest reason he was elected President in 1928. However, he segregated the victims by race and broke many promises made to the “Colored Advisory Commission.” This caused much disappointment among African Americans who were predominantly members of the Republican Party. The emergence of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his
First Lady, Eleanor, who reached out to African Americans changed the whole demographic. Blacks started moving over to the Democratic Party. We need more of a public outcry on the River situation. Pleas for the President to react accordingly have come in writing by the Governors of Illinois, Missouri and Iowa. 15 U.S. Senators have also written pleading for the President’s action. Also, 62 members of the House of Representatives have written including members of the Congressional Black Caucus (Elijah Cummings, Lacy Clay, Cedric Richmond, Bennie Thompson, Emanuel Cleaver, Terri Sewell, Danny Davis and Bobby Rush). It is time for all of us to show big time concern. Call your senator, congressperson, governor and talk it up on your favorite radio talk show. Write to people as I am doing now. We don’t need additional hits to our economic situation. The nation is fragile and good stewardship with rapid action is needed. The Right-Wing Witch Hunt Against Susan Rice By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist Media Matters, the media monitoring group, has published a report titled, “Myths And Facts About The Right-Wing Witch Hunt Against Susan Rice.” It is a point-by-point rebuttal of some of the most flagrant lies being circulated about United Nations Ambassador Susan E. Rice, President Obama’s leading candidate to succeed Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State. Below are some of the highlights: MYTH: Rice Fabricated Her Statements As Part of An Obama Administration Cover-Up. FACT: A Washington Post editorial [11/22/12] noted: “Ms. Rice’s Comments” On Sunday Shows “Were Based On Talking Points Drawn Up By The Intelligence Community.” It explained: “[A]s congressional testimony has established, Ms. Rice’s comments on several Sunday television talk shows on Sept. 16 were based on talking points drawn up by the intelligence community. Officials believe that it was inspired in part by demonstrations that took place that day in Cairo. That is not so far from Ms. Rice’s explanation that ‘this began as a spontaneous . . . response to what transpired in Cairo.’” MYTH: Rice Had No Reason To Connect Benghazi Attack To AntiIslam Video. FACT: Rice Said Benghazi Attack Was A Response To Violent Protest At U.S. Embassy In Cairo … “On-the-ground accounts indicate that Ms. Rice’s description of the attack, though wrong in some respects, was accurate in others. In Cairo, as you know, a few hours earlier, there was a violent protest that was undertaken in reaction to this very offensive video that was disseminated. “We believe that folks in Benghazi, a small number of people came to the embassy to – or to the consulate, rather, to replicate the sort of challenge that was posed in Cairo. Petraeus, the former director of the Central Intelligence Agency, told lawmakers on Friday that classified intelligence reports revealed that the deadly assault on the American diplomatic mission in Libya was a terrorist attack, but that the administration refrained from saying it suspected that the perpetrators of the attack were Al Qaeda affiliates and sympathizers to avoid tipping off the groups. “Mr. Petraeus, who resigned last week after admitting to an extramarital affair, said the names of groups suspected in the attack – including Al Qaeda’s franchise in North Africa and a local Libyan group, Ansar alShariah – were removed from the Saturday, December 8, 2012
public explanation of the attack immediately after the assault to avoid alerting the militants that American intelligence and law enforcement agencies were tracking them, lawmakers said.” Media Matters observed, “The article also noted that Petraeus reportedly said that after the references to the specific terrorist groups were removed and replaced with the less specific word ‘extremists,’ ‘the final document was put in front of all the senior agency leaders, including Mr. Petraeus, and everyone signed off on it.’” There are legitimate questions that should be asked of Susan Rice such as her service on the National Security Council at the time of the Rwandan genocide and her role as Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs. But her confirmation should rest on her answers to legitimate questions, not an illegitimate political witch hunt. George E. Worrill’s World By Dr. Conrad W. Worrill
IS THE REAL MEANING OF KWANZAA BEING LOST? (Dr. Conrad Worrill, National Chairman Emeritus of the National Black United Front (NBUF), located at 1809 East 71st Street, Suite 211, Chicago, Illinois, 60649, 773-493-0900, Fax# 773-493-9819, E-mail: nbufchic@sbcglobal.net, Web site: nbufront.org)
Dr. Conrad Worrill There are countless examples of African people, throughout the world, creating ideas aimed at the upliftment of African people and when the people catch on to the idea, someone outside our community (European and Asians) tap into
the idea for their own commercial benefit. At this moment in history, we find this occurring with the African in America holiday celebration called Kwanzaa. This African in America celebration was initiated by the US Organization and Dr. Maulana Karenga in Los Angeles, California in 1966. In this context, “Kwanzaa was created to introduce and reinforce seven basic values of African culture which contribute to building and reinforcing community among African people in America as well as Africans throughout the world African community.” It is further explained that “The values are called the Nguzo Saba which in the Pan African language of Swahili means the Seven Principles. These principles stand at the heart of the origin and meaning of Kwanzaa, for it is these values which are not only the building blocks for community but serve also as its social glue.” These Seven Principles, the Nguzo Saba, are Umoja / Unity, Kujichagulia / Self Determination, Ujima / Collective Work and Responsibility, Ujamaa / Cooperative Economics, Nia / Purpose, Kuumba / Creativity, and Imani / Faith. It was the Pan African / National-
ist Movement in America that embraced the idea of Kwanzaa in the late 1960s and began to organize Kwanzaa activities at the community level throughout the United States. The seven days of Kwanzaa are celebrated from December 26th through January 1st. The Pan African / Nationalist Movement met great opposition from the so-called established leadership and a segment of the African masses who felt that Kwanzaa was an attempt to establish a new religion, that it was opposed to Christianity and Christ, and that its aim was to replace Christmas. All of these were false notions regarding the true meaning of Kwanzaa and the Pan African / Nationalist Movement spent enormous energy and effort, over the years, to explain the true meaning of Kwanzaa. Kwanzaa is not a religion, but it has a spiritual foundation. African people from all religious persuasions participate in Kwanzaa. Kwanzaa was not created to replace Christmas and many African people who acknowledge and celebrate Christmas also acknowledge and participate in Kwanzaa. Because of the great educational campaigns of the Pan African / Nationalist Movement, these early misconceptions of Kwanzaa have now been thoroughly dismantled.
The concept of Kwanzaa as we have historically understood it, and helped develop it, over the last forty-six years, is a cultural project that strikes at the roots of Black Power. That is the ability of a people to define themselves in the context of their own experiences. The idea of defining ourselves in our own image and interests is at the heart of the Black / Pan African / Nationalist Movement out of which Kwanzaa developed. Kwanzaa was never aimed at integration, but rather the national interests of African people in America as a self determining body of people. Kwanzaa has become an aspect of our national identity as more than twenty million African people in America participate in some aspect of Kwanzaa. Because of this tremendous market that has been created by the Pan African / Nationalist led Kwanzaa Movement, it is our challenge to defeat those forces who are attempting to dilute and disrupt the real significance of Kwanzaa. Some may say this should be anticipated in a capitalistic world. But that does not mean we don’t struggle against turning Kwanzaa into a capitalistic venture controlled by the forces of the white corporate world and their
African in America allies. One of the biggest mistakes the Pan African / Nationalist Movement made, as we reflect on this growing tendency to commercialize Kwanzaa, is that we did not create a legal structure through incorporation, copyright law, and patents to protect Kwanzaa. Kwanzaa has become a free for all, that many people use to do whatever they want with Kwanzaa and in many instances it has nothing to do with the real meaning of Kwanzaa. It is important to note that in Dr. Karenga’s book, Kwanzaa: A Celebration of Family, Community, and Culture, published in 1997 by the University of Sankore Press, explains his position on the commercialization of Kwanzaa. He states that, “The challenges, for the African in America community as well as African communities everywhere is to resist the corporate commercialization of Kwanzaa; to affirm and hold to the essential meaning of Kwanzaa and refuse to cooperate with the corporate drive to dominate and redefine it and make it simply another holiday to maximize sales.” Karenga says that “Kwanzaa is above all a cultural practice not a commercial one and external and (Continued on page 17)
The Season to be Careful By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist Okay, I’ll admit it. I am truly the Grinch who wanted to steal Christmas. It takes me until about December 23 to get in the spirit, and I only feel obligated to find gifts for children and close family. I like to give, which is why I share with a few charities that are close to me. I like to connect, which is why I have a greeting card ritual. But all this crazy frenzy after Thanksgiving, before Christmas sale stuff truly repels me. And while I don’t want to put a damper on anybody’s sprit, I want to say that this is the season to be careful. After all, we live in a consumeroriented society. When we spend, other people get paid. When we spend other people are blessed. But if you spend what you don’t have then you are sliding down your own fiscal cliff, and you won’t have a pillow to protect you. The average American will spend about $900 this year on Christmas gifts and toys, but that 6
means that half will spend more. ‘Tis the season to be careful. Some of the biggest scams come from charities. They will reach you through email, snail mail, and even text mail. They may ask for a little or a lot. You’ve got to
sale scam. If you buy it now, you will get a sale that will never, ever, in your lifetime be replicated. So standing in line all night for the 52-foot TV for $239, while the store has only 10. Find some furniture you like only to be told it is 50 percent off today, but not tomorrow. Retailers are playing on your greed and your panic. If you take your time, you might find an even better deal. And it seems too good to be true, it is. Scruffy little children will come to your door this time of year, asking for money for their church, for magazine subscriptions, for all form of causes. You may want to slip the child a few pennies, but please know they aren’t going to make more than that with the magazine subscription scam, or with the church solicitation. In fact, most churches run their own solicitations, so maybe ask for the name of the church and call them before you make a donation. I suppose I am the Grinch because I am dismayed that our holiday season that supposedly celebrates the birth of the Christ child
ask where your money is going. Some organizations take as much
as 80 percent of your gift, which means that the people you want to help get just 20 percent of your money. Before you spend a penny, ask the right questions. Too many charities lean on this time of year to make their money, but if the whole truth is told, they are really leaning on this time of year to make a living. Check these folks out online, and look for their annual reports. If their overhead is more than 15 percent, walk on by. Another scam is the garbled name scam. You may think you are giving to a worthy program, such as the Police Athletic League, only to find that you are giving to the non-registered Police Athletic Program. You may think you are giving to an African American cause, only to find that a garbled name takes you someplace else. Americans want to give, and African Americans are among the most generous, based on the percent of income we give. But give with your head and not with your heart, and ask solicitors important questions. One of the other scams is the

has turned into a commercial orgy with people shopping for a full five weeks. It has also turned into a solicitation orgy with almost every organization you have ever known asking for end of year contributions. In the middle of all this drama, the purpose of the holiday is swallowed. I am weary of seeing frenzied faces anxious for the next sale, or children (and grown folks) defining their worth by what goodies they pick up. I am weary of the folks who go into crazy debt to prove a point, to buy affection, to shower folks with gifts when they should shower them with love. Can we be careful with our wallets and open with our hearts? I hope that we will all remember and embrace the meaning of Christmas and not the crassness of consumerism. SOMETHING ASKEW WITH DA MARE!!! Mare Emanuel has a loose screw I am convinced ‘cause I don’t want to believe that he holds his constituency in such low regard that he can just say anything to them and it’s okay. Last week Ima heard that he made a remark that amounted to if the bus riding public don’t like the price to ride public transportation they can just drive. Is he crazy? In case he ain’t keeping up with things, there is a depressed economy and lots of folks looking for jobs here

Well, the Governor had given TWO this grant and frankly dey said that the grant was supposed to help his election as Governor after he helped nail the coffin shut on former Gubner Blagojevich. Well, I guess it worked, ‘cause dey say he is the Governor. The question is: where was Finney, who must have been his partner in crime? And what in the world will Bozo do when it’s time for the next election for Gubner???
Mel Reynolds mend that they not enter the race will take Ima’s advice I can come around and collect my consultant’s fee. Way to go Pastor Brooks!!!
I know I've been there and I can attest with full authority that most elected officials aren't infallible. They are humans and they as the general public, have human frailties of some kind. As a general rule, though not inculcated people have the tendency to establish their own definition of their officials without even attempting to contact or talking di-
rectly to the official. Or they will take what they hear from others to be the authentic definition of their elected officials and run with what they hear but, seldom what they hear or believe is true. There are elected officials that purport themselves as the greatest individuals since Orville and Wilbur Wright. Most elected officials are approachable, will talk to you, listen to your concerns and will try with whatever resources they have to solve problems. Most of the local ones keep office hours, see constituencies and respond to the community. Of course there are exceptions to the rule. I don't care how good they are or how bad they are at their jobs, they make honest mistakes. I am a victim of a mistake that I regret to this day because I see my mistake on our streets every day. What happened is a gentleman from the 24th ward by the name of Sal Dunlap came to me with an ordinance entitled, "War on Filth," an ingenious idea that was brought to the right place, the health committee that I chaired. I accepted the ordinance but was advised to pass it on to an-
other Alderman for specific details before passage. That was a mistake, that was an ordinance that should have been passed immediately and promoted at the highest level. Why so, everyday on our streets, sidewalks, lots, parks, yards, vacant buildings are lined with filth. Mr. Dunlap was on the right track with the right Idea. Had I dropped something that I was doing and pulled in his alderman to run with the idea with my help, perhaps we could have changed some minds, habits, and ideas in our community. As I see burger wrappers, ice cream containers, beer and whiskey bottles, milk cartons, pop and water bottles, cigarette butts and people throwing bags of trash out of car windows to the middle of the streets, I think of the lack of responsibility that I gave to Mr. Sal Dunlap on a great idea that he had that could have helped our city. Not only do I regret my mistake, I owe him a debt of gratitude, and an apology and I humbly say to him that I an truly sorry for such a serious mistake. When a mistake is made, its right to say, ‘I’m sorry'. Ed Smith, former Alderman/ democratic/28th Ward

The investigative reporters made a stop on 63rd Street at TWO (The Woodlawn Organization) and the once well

If one of those hurting citizens happens to have a flashback about his smart a. . remarks and hits the little fella up side his head the crazy element of the police force will be johnnyon-the-spot to arrest him. So I suggest to the Mare to keep his nonsensical remarks to himself or practice them on the folks at home who love him no matter what. A word to the wise should be sufficient, but since we know he ain’t wise will his press secretary, assistant or somebody with good sense tell him not to say every warped thought he has.

COMMUNITY Chicago Area Project receives 2012 Justice Award Chicago Area Project (CAP) has received the American Society of Criminology’s 2012 Presidential Justice Award for its pioneering community-based model, which has been successfully used for over 75 years to reduce crime, strengthen neighborhoods and advocate for justice in the juvenile justice system. CAP Executive Director David E. Whittaker accepted the award on November 16, 2012 from ASC President Robert J. Sampson during the American Society of Criminology’s 68th annual meeting, which was held at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago. The American Society of Criminology is an international organization whose members pursue scholarly, scientific, and professional knowledge concerning the measurement, etiology, consequences, prevention, control, and treatment of crime and delinquency. This is the first time the ASC’s Executive Board has given the award to an organization instead of an individual. “The ASC Presidential Justice Award is much more than a welcome recognition of Chicago Area Project’s efforts to prevent and eradicate juvenile delinquency in some of the poorest communities in Metropolitan Chicago and throughout the State of Illinois,” states Whittaker. “The recognition that the Presidential Justice Award brings to Chicago Area Project will reinforce our ongoing efforts to secure the crucial funding that is needed to ensure that the community-based Area Project model not only sur-
vives, but expands and thrives in these tough financial times.” The Chicago Area Project (CAP) was created in 1934 by the University of Chicago Sociologist Clifford R. Shaw to address the problems of juvenile delinquency in some of the poorest communities in Chicago. Shaw believed that every neighborhood could reduce juvenile delinquency by improving community life. Building on this vision for over 75 years, Chicago Area Project has consistently demonstrated that lowincome residents are as capable as others in addressing critical neighborhood issues. CAP believes that community problems cannot be solved by bringing in outside agencies to “fix” local problems such as delinquency, gang violence, substance abuse, and unemployment. Chicago Area Project’s mission is to work toward the prevention and eradication of juvenile delinquency through the development and support of affiliated local community self-help efforts in communities where the need is greatest. Chicago Area Project has grassroots affiliate organizations and affiliate partners throughout Metropolitan Chicago. These groups include Alliance Partners (20 sites), Alternatives, Inc. Government officials move park project forward A host of dignitaries and community members recently attended a groundbreaking ceremony for a restored park at 137th Street and Eggleston in Riverdale. The delegation included Calumet Township Supervisor Bob Rita, Township Clerk Fred Bilotto, Township Trustee Louis Peyton, Riverdale Park District President Nathaniel Smiley, and Riverdale Mayor Deyon Dean. "As you know, this space has been derelict and in dire need of a complete restoration for a very long time. And that time has come," said Rita. “Thanks to a partnership between Calumet Township and the Riverdale Park District, we are proud to be here today to break ground for a new park.” Rita credited Peyton for the effort to get the park restoration project off the ground. “This groundbreaking today is due to the vision and the planning of Trustee Louis Peyton,” said Rita. “Louis analyzed the demographics, the costs, the accessibility of a recreational facility, and he drafted a

The other area will be reserved for children ages six to 12. In addition to new playground equipment, the grounds will be cleaned and landscaped. The park will be a welcoming and safe place for neighborhood families,” said Rita. “Parents and children will be able to gather with neighbors and share time together in their own, restored neighborhood park.” The park contractor will be Hacienda Construction. Buddy Guy President Obama drew laughs when he described the Honorees as “some extraordinary people who have no business being on the same stage together.” Noting that Buddy Guy made his first guitar strings using wire from a window screen, Obama quipped, “That worked until his parents started wondering how all the mosquitoes were getting in.” The President thanked the members of Led Zeppelin for behaving themselves at the White House given their history of “hotel rooms trashed and mayhem all around.” Obama noted Letterman’s humble beginnings as an Indianapolis weatherman who once reported the city was being pelted by hail “the size of canned hams.” “It’s one of the highlights of his career.” All kidding aside, Obama described all of the Honorees as artists who “inspired us to see things in a new way, to hear things differently, to discover something within us or to appreciate how much beauty there is in the world.” During the show, comedian Tina Fey said she grew up watching her mom laugh at Letterman as he brought on “an endless parade of weirdos,”while dance legend Judith Jamison paid tribute to Natalia Makarova. For Buddy Guy, singers Bonnie Raitt, Tracy Chapman and others got most of the crowd on its feet singing Guy’s signature “Sweet Home Chicago,” while Morgan Freeman hailed Guy as a pioneer who helped bridge soul and rock and roll. “When you hear the blues, you really don’t think of it as black or white or yellow or purple or blue,” Freeman said. “Buddy Guy, your blue brought us together.” Robert DeNiro saluted Hoffman, saying he had changed acting, never took any shortcuts and was brave enough to be a perfectionist. “Before Dustin burst on the scene, it was pretty much OK for movie stars to show up, read their lines and, if the director insisted, act a little,” DeNiro said. “But then Dustin came along—-and he just had to get everything right.” By the end of the night, the Foo Fighters, Kid Rock and Lenny Kravitz got the crowd moving to some of Led Zeppelin’s hits at The Kennedy Center. For the finale Heart’s Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson sang “Stairway to Heaven,” accompanied by a full choir and Jason Bonham, son of the late Zeppelin drummer John Bonham. Director Victor Ginzburg brings author Victor Pelevin's popular cult novel to the screen in Generation P, a confrontational, occasionally hallucinogenic drama centering on a cynical Russian poet who becomes caught up in the world of highstakes advertising shortly after the fall of the Soviet Union. It is a world populated by gangsters, freshly minted millionaires, advertising gurus and virtual politicians. The central character, Babylen Tatarsky (Vladimir Yepifantsev), was working in a drab sidewalk convenience shop when a chance run-in with an old friend reveals an exciting career opportunity. With Communism now a thing of the past, Moscow is quickly moving into the future. That means Western products will soon be flooding into stores, and in order to sell them Russian advertisers must dream up campaigns with local flavor. When Babylen's instincts of what sells prove directly on target, he quickly begins to climb the ladder of success. But when Babylen gets a creative block, he turns to LSD, psilocybin mushrooms, cocaine, vodka and spiritual communication for creative inspiration. Summoning the spirit of Che Guevara with a Ouija board, Babylen gets an unexpected education that completely alters his perspective of the media, and he finds himself integrated with a secretive Babylonian cult that offers him a transcendent opportunity. Generation P is an interesting movie about a creative Russian
guy who just happens to be in the right place at the right time, as far as his genius in creating productive, money-making ad campaigns. Some of the campaigns sound dorky, but as long as you can prove to the newly minted Russians that a plain cigarette has even more sex appeal or glamour, that was all that was needed by Babylen to win the game. But as the film and the industry are rife with gangsters, corruption and greed, often Babylen is racing against the clock to get paid before his clients are snuffed out. Generation P refers to the Pepsi generation—Pepsi being the beverage of choice for many hip Russians living in Moscow. After Babylen hits a plateau, he seems to just glaze around, one drug-crazed trip after another, while waiting to launch the next
good product. Even though Generation P seemed strange, it was a great exploration of Russian life and values that revealed the capitalistic side of the rich in that country—who had already been enjoying Western products, but the opportunity was there for even more people to be exposed to watches, perfume and other goods not produced in Russia. Babylen jumped on the premise that a hungry Russian consumer would be more than happy to purchase what was once considered taboo. While an interesting movie, Generation P is complicated in its texture and plot themes. It is screening at Chicago’s Landmark Century Theatre beginning December 7, as well as Renaissance Place Cinema in Highland Park.

WORLD OF MUSIC
By Barbara Wright-Pryor
‘Tis the season to ‘Messiah’ (Reprinted annually by popular demand)
George Frideric Händel In the year 1685 two musical geniuses who contributed much of the world’s most beautiful sacred music were born not very far from one another in Germany. Johann Sebastian Bach was born in the town of Eisenbach in Central Germany and never traveled very far from his birthplace.
George Frideric Händel was born in nearby Halle, Germany and later traveled abroad to Italy because he wanted to study the Italian method of composing opera and then moved to England to spend the rest of his life. Both Bach and Händel went on to compose major oratorios (sacred dramas) chronicling the life of Christ. Bach’s “The Passion of Our Lord according to St. Matthew” and “The Passion of Our Lord according to St. John” have withstood the test of time as has Handel’s monumental work, “Messiah.” Each is as powerful today as it was two and one-half centuries ago. Händel, at age 56, like Edward Kennedy (Duke) Ellington at age 64, discontinued creating secular works and dedicated the rest of his life to composing music in the sacred genre. “Messiah” was created in the short period of twenty-four days, between August 22
and September 14, 1741. Händel’s friend, Charles Jennens, compiled the text for him. Approximately 4/5 of the “Messiah” text comes from the Old Testament, even the passages that describe the persecution, crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. The other 1/5 is taken from the New Testament, mostly Corinthians and the Book of Revelations. “Messiah” is divided into three major sections: Part I, the foretelling of His coming, His birth and ministry; Part II, the passion, crucifixion, and victory and reception in Glory; Part III details the Christian’s confidence in the future. Händel conducted the very first performance of “Messiah” in Dublin, Ireland on April 13, 1742. On April 2, 1759, Händel conducted “Messiah” for the last time. He had frequently stated that he wanted to die on Good Friday so that he could be resur-
rected on Easter Sunday with his Lord. Eleven days later on April 13, 1759, the seventeenth anniversary of the first performance of “Messiah” in Dublin, George Frideric Händel died. It was Good Friday. Performances of “Messiah” are a longstanding tradition within the Black church. Upcoming performances will be presented: Sunday, December 9 at 3:30 pm - The Sanctuary of First Baptist Congregational Church, 1613 W. Washington Blvd., presents its 54th annual performance of Händel’s “Messiah” The Choir and soloists Elizabeth Harrison, soprano; Kamaran Alexis Madison, contralto; Jeffrey Burish, tenor; and Antonio Watts, baritone; with organist Arthur D. Lyric Opera’s search for a permanent chorus master is ongoing. Recipient of the San Francisco Opera’s 2012 Opera Medal, Ian Robertson has been chorus director and conductor with San Francisco Opera since 1987. “Lyric Opera is deeply grateful to David Gockley, general director of San Francisco Opera, for accommodating our request to release Ian for several weeks on such short notice,” Freud said. Robertson will serve as guest chorus master for Lyric Opera
productions of Puccini’s “La bohème,” Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger,” and Verdi’s “Rigoletto.” He will remain at Lyric through the late-February dress rehearsal of “Rigoletto,” returning to San Francisco Opera February 25 for his duties as chorus director. Music staff member Valerie Maze helped to prepare the Lyric Opera Chorus for this season’s productions of “Werther,” “Don Pasquale,” and “Hansel and Gretel” and will continue to work with the ensemble for remaining performances of the latter two. “Hansel and Gretel” opened Friday, December 7 and uses a small children’s chorus drawn from Anima Young Singers of Greater Chicago. This free concert takes place Sunday, January 20 at 5 p.m. at Nichols Concert Hall, 1490 Chicago Avenue, Evanston. The 180-member male choral group, led by conductor Brian C. Rice, will again perform an electrifying program of repertoire offering traditional and contemporary gospel and jazz arrangements. This annual performance by the Brotherhood Chorale has become one of Chicago’s most inspiring annual tributes to Dr. King. Admission is free; all contributions that evening benefit the William Warfield Memorial Scholarship Fund of the Music Institute of Chicago, which annually offers need-based financial assistance for minority students. William Warfield, famed operatic baritone, was a longstanding member of the Music Institute’s board of trustees. This concert is generously sponsored by Schaefer’s Wines, Foods & Spirits. Brotherhood Chorale The nationally recognized Brotherhood Chorale was founded in Chicago in 1969 with less than 30 members. Under the guidance of its current and visionary director, Brian Rice, the Brotherhood Chorale has built an impressive repertoire and grown to approximately 180 members. Historic donation to Sinai Urban Health Institute to fund ‘Helping Her Live’ initiative The Barbara Bates Foundation delivered on a promise to fund breast cancer education and awareness specifically targeted to women of color. In a ceremony held at Mount Sinai Hospital on November 28, Barbara Bates, founder of the organization, presented a check for $50,000 that will be used to educate African American and Latino women on the early detection and treatment of breast cancer. The $50K donation represented the funds raised during “Knocking Out Breast Cancer,” a fashion show and fundraiser conceived by Bates to aid women suffering from breast cancer. The unique event, held at Prentice Women’s Hospital in October, featured over 50 models; all of them breast cancer survivors. The donated funds are specifically targeted to Sinai Urban Health Institute’s (SUHI) “Helping Her Live” program. This outreach program sends health workers into the community to teach minority women about the importance of getting mammograms. The program is committed to eliminating the disparities found in breast cancer mortality rates between minority and white women. Black women in Chicago are 68% more likely to die from breast cancer than white women. As for Hispanic women, SUHI has found they tend to get mammograms less often than white woman, which in-

Former 15th Ward Alderman “Ted” Thomas remembered Services for former 15th Ward Alderman Theodore “Ted” Thomas were at The Precious Memories Funeral Home on Halsted following his death on Nov. 10. Mr. Thomas was born August 9, 1936 in Houston, Texas, the son of Walker and Ruby Thomas, and the oldest of six children. A 1954 graduate of George Washington High School in San Francisco, Ca., Mr. Thomas immediately enlisted in the United States Air Force after high school. He retired
after 21 years. He went to work in 1984 as a maintenance mechanic and electronic equipment repair technician at the United States Postal Service, where he worked until his retirement in 1999. Mr. Thomas also is the former president of the Chicago Chapter of ACORN, which advocates social justice and building stronger communities. He served many years as a Deacon of his church. Mr. Thomas’ passion to make a difference and create
change in his community led him to pursue a Chicago City Council position. He ran for Alderman of the 15th Ward, was elected in 1999 and served two successful terms under former Mayor Richard M. Daley. As Alderman he contributed to revitalizing the neighborhoods in his Ward by repairing streets, and cleaning up vacant lots. He worked in collaboration with the 7th and 8th Chicago Police districts to reduce crime, im-

Edric added that as a graduate of Florida A&M University he felt it was his responsibility to reach back and help other students less fortunate. “I was lucky because I had parents who helped me pay for my college education but a lot of students at HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) do not have that family support and most end up dropping out because of it,” Edric, marketing director for Calahan Funeral Home, said during the event he moderated with FOX News Reporter Darlene Hill. The 300 people who attended the event gave a standing ovation to the Calahan family for their commitment to Englewood whose residents are predominately Black, according to census data. “They could have left Englewood a long time ago but they didn’t. Instead, they stayed and has made a difference in the community,” Hill said. The funeral home has been in business 30 years. Alderman Latasha Thomas,
whose 17th Ward includes the Calahan Funeral Home at 7030 S. Halsted St., said words could not express her gratitude to the Calahans for keeping their small business in her ward. “The 17th Ward has a lot of challenges, both good and bad, but through it all the Calahans have remained at the same location where they continue to do marvelous things for the community,” said Thomas. Capping off the evening was a performance by R&B singers Musiq Soulchild and Avery Sunshine and gospel singer Anita Wilson. Performing in Chicago always is a good feeling, said Wilson. “Chicago is home to me because I come here so much. I applaud the Calahans for their work here and encourage them to keep up the good work,” added Wilson. Renay Patterson, 49, drove from north suburban Downers Grove to attend the event. “This was my first time attending but I had heard about it from friends. That’s why I made it my business to
