Public school teachers strike back! By Wendell Hutson Now that the Chicago Teachers Union has informed Chicago Public Schools officials of its intent to go on strike, parents and students are hoping a deal can be reached soon. Attending a Wednesday news conference at CTU headquarters were not only teachers but also parents. “I know teachers need to be paid but I just don’t know if this is the way to go about getting a raise,” said Sandra Helms, whose three kids attend CPS. “At the same time the school board is crying broke, yet I have not heard anyone taking a salary cut.” Travis Bond has two kids who attend CPS and he does not support a teachers’ strike. “Everyone is looking out for themselves but what about the kids? I wish the teachers, school board members and the mayor could see the hurt and pain they are causing our kids,” Bond added. Mayor Rahm Emanuel said he now plans to get more involved with contract negotiations to avoid a strike. The mayor’s three small children do not attend CPS but a private elementary school on the South Side where the annual tuition exceeds $15,000 a year. The latest move by the CTU comes after nearly a year of trying to negotiate a new

contract, according to Karen Lewis, president of the CTU. As required by state law, the CTU gave CPS and the Illinois Educa-

tional Labor Relations Board on Wednesday a 10-day written notice, which means teachers could go on strike as early as Sep-

Chicago police officer to fill the seat of Derrick Smith By J. Coyden Palmer In an ironic twist of political fate, West Side democratic leaders last week selected a Chicago police officer to fill the seat of former state Rep. Derrick Smith, who was expelled from the House earlier this month after his arrest on bribery charges back in March. Eddie Winters, who works as a counter-terrorism officer, will hold the office until January, when the winner of the Nov. 6 election is sworn-in. Winters will be sworn-in after he is granted a leave of absence from the police department, a spokesperson for Secretary of State Jesse White said. White, who had been a strong supporter of Smith until his arrest, led the panel that unanimously selected Winters. This will be Winters’ first time in an elected office, but he will not be running in the November election. Instead, third-party candidate,

Attorney Lance Tyson is being backed by democratic leaders to run against Smith. Tyson was backed by White and other party leaders after Smith refused to drop out of the race with his victory in the March primary. “I am excited about the opportunity and am looking forward to representing the people of the district on important issues,” said Winters, who unsuccessfully ran for the seat in the 10th District on two previous occasions. “I look forward to going down there and learning what I can.” It was his previous campaigns that brought Winters to the attention of Democratic leaders, said White spokesperson Dave Druker. The panel, which included Ald. Bob Fioretti, believes Winters has the qualities needed to step-in during a tough situation. “The committee was impressed last time (Continued on page 3)

Englewood children have a mouthful of joy By Wendell Hutson Cierra Washington was all smiles Monday after visiting the local dental clinic in the Englewood community on the South Side. “He (the dentist) said every thing looks good and that I should keeping brushing and flossing my teeth,” the seven year-old told the Crusader. “Some kids don’t like coming to the dentist but I do because he gives me gifts when I am done.” And when you consider the gun violence children living in the nationally known community have to endure each year, it is nice to know that there is a place, besides school and church, that brings a smile to their faces, said Derek Michaels, manager of Outreach Marketing for St. Bernard Hospital, 326 W. 64th St. For so long the Englewood community has been known for

is Dr. Vipul Singhal, who heads up a predominately Black staff including seven dentists. “I have been a dentist for 18 years but my last five here at St. Bernard have been the most rewarding,” Singhal said. “We see on average between 25 to 30 patients a day. About 92 percent of our patients (which include parents) are Black. And most of the children we see come from lowincome households whose parents either have no dental insurance or are covered by Medicaid.” Medicaid is a governmentsponsored health program for people with low incomes and resources. People served by Medicaid are adults, their children and people with certain disabilities. Among some of the common problems Singhal sees when examining children is cavities resulting from not brushing their teeth enough and eating too much candy. When this occurs he

A MOUTHFUL OF JOY is what youth who are patients at the pediatric dental clinic, located at St. Bernard Hospital on the South Side, said they feel when they leave the center. Cierra Washington, 7, has had to undergo a root canal at the clinic but passed a recent examination with “flying colors.”

ST. BERNARD HOSPITAL is home to one of three pediatric dental clinics in the city that treat ‘special needs’ children. John Lions, 15, is a regular patient at the clinic and said he enjoys coming to St. Bernard, in part because he was born at the South Side hospital.

“There have been times when I noticed signs of physical abuse. I have seen scars and bruises on children and sometimes they tell me what their parents have done to them and it breaks my heart,” he said. “By law, I am required to report this to DCFS (Department of Children and Family Services) and I do.” There is no abuse to report for 15-year-old John Lions though. The teenager was not only born at St. Bernard Hospital but lives in the Englewood community too. “The care here is excellent. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a good dentist for their children,” Lions said. His mom, Angela Lions, was also born at St. Bernard and agreed with him.

“I come here too and they take very good care of me,” she added. Other patients seem to agree as well. Every patient is asked to fill out a survey when he or she arrives and when he or she leaves the clinic. The Crusader reviewed the surveys and based on its analysis, 99 percent said they were satisfied with the quality of care they received and 100 percent said they would recommend the dental center. The center is open Monday through Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. For more information or to make an appointment, call the center at 773-962-3976 or e-mail dental@stbh.org.

crime, unemployment and poor economic conditions for its residents, who are predominately Black, according to census data. But one hidden gem about the community is its pediatric, dental clinic at St. Bernard Hospital. The medical institution has been a part of Englewood since it opened in 1904. And the five-year-old dental clinic, which sees youth ages 18 years old and under, is one of three pediatric dental clinics in the city that treats special needs children, such as those with autism. The other two dental clinics are located at the University of Illinois-Chicago Medical Center and Illinois Masonic Medical Center, both on the West Side. The director of the Department of Dental Services at St. Bernard

recommends a filling or if the cavity is too large for a filling, he then recommends a root canal. “I never recommend tooth extraction unless it is a last resort. In the long run pulling a tooth out will cost more as time goes on,” he added. “I have had to do a lot of root canals on children. But I try to educate parents about dental hygiene and how they can help their children do the same.” Prices at the dental clinic are competitive to other centers, according to Singhal, who charges $45 for a ‘simple’ tooth extraction and $15 for cleanings. And even if a child comes in and does not have any insurance or money to pay, the dental clinic will still treat the child. Seeing so many children though sometimes brings unwanted pain to dentists, explained Singhal.

ONE OF THREE pediatric dental clinics in the city that treat ‘special needs’ children, such as those with autism, is located at St. Bernard Hospital. It sees youth ages 18 years old and under regardless if their parents can afford to pay or not.

Raoul’s innovative diversion plan becomes law “It’s not enough to be tough on crime; we have to be smart on crime.” Thanks to legislation sponsored by Senator Kwame Raoul (D13th), Illinois law now allows first-time, non-violent offenders to participate in a two-year diversion program similar to probation. Once they successfully

Kwame Raoul complete the program, their records will immediately be expunged, increasing their odds of

getting a job and staying out of prison. “It’s not enough just to be tough on crime; we have to be smart on crime,” Sen. Raoul said. “With our prisons filled beyond their intended capacity and our state budget stretched thin, we simply can’t afford to lock away non-violent offenders with a high likelihood of making restitution, addressing any behavioral or substance abuse problems, and turning their lives around. Enrolling these individuals in alternative programs will be cheaper and more effective than traditional incarceration.” Senate Bill 3349, signed recently by Governor Quinn, allows offenders convicted or indicted on certain felony charges (including burglary, theft, forgery, possession of a stolen vehicle, and drug possession) to participate in the “offender initiative” program only with the consent of the state’s attorney and a judge. During their two years in the program, offenders must meet minimum conditions set by a judge, such as making restitution to victims, performing community service, holding a job, completing a treatment program, and/or passing drug tests. Participants may not

own a firearm during the probation period, and if they reoffend within five years, the expunged records can still be used against them in a trial. “It has been an honor to work

with Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez and her office on this legislation,” said Sen. Raoul, who this spring also sponsored a new “early release” law with comprehensive safeguards.

“We have seen this year that there is bipartisan momentum toward addressing the aspects of our correctional system that aren’t working and adopting tools to help us utilize our resources wisely.”

BARNES & THORNBURG, a leader in diversity in the local legal community, recently honored others who exemplify diversity in their respective corporate environments, including (l-r): Malcolm Weems, Director of Illinois Central Management Services; Alderman Ed Burke; Andrea Zopp, President of Chicago Urban League; Marco Tasso, President of North Star Lottery Group; and Richard Boykin, Barnes & Thornburg.

Public school teachers strike back! Chicago police officer . . . (Continued from page 1) District's latest contract offer and possibly set a strike date. And while there is still time to avoid a strike, Lewis said she is not holding her breath. “A strike is the last thing teachers want but CPS has left us no other choice. We will continue to negotiate for a fair contract with a goal of preventing a strike, but because we are so far apart on several issues, such as pay, it looks like an uphill battle,” explained Lewis. “If I had to give you a status of the negotiations I would say we are at step 27 on a scale of 100.” CPS officials said they will work extra hard to resolve contract disputes with the CTU, but is encouraging teachers to stay in the classrooms where they are needed the most. “Everyone knows that a strike would only hurt our kids. They can't afford to be removed from the classroom just as they're making progress with the new full school day,” said Jean-Claude Brizard, chief executive officer for CPS. “That's why we'll continue to meet every day until we reach a fair resolution for our teachers and avoid any disruption to our kids' school year.” However, if a strike does occur

“CPS has been working on a plan for the last several weeks that would allow the district to provide our kids with essential services they need in the event that the Chicago Teachers Union decides to strike,” explained Becky Carroll, a spokeswoman for CPS. “[And] if they (the CTU) choose to strike, we will be ready to provide our kids with a safe environment where they can engage in positive activities and get the food they need every day.” She added that details of the contingency plan were forthcoming to parents. The school board’s only two Black members, Andrea Zopp and Mahalia Hines, weighed in on the pending strike during a recent editorial board meeting with the Crusader. Zopp, who is president and chief executive officer for the Chicago Urban League, and Hines, a retired CPS teacher and principal, said while teachers do deserve a raise they are hardly underpaid. “People need to understand that starting salaries for CPS teachers are the highest in the nation at $50,000 a year, so our

teachers are paid well,” Zopp told the Crusader. “The 2 percent raise the school board offered is not meant to be an insult but it is the best we can do for now.” Under the last contract, which expired June 30, teachers were suppose to receive a 4 percent raise in 2011 but the school district exercised their contractual right to cancel the scheduled raise because of a $700 million deficit it faces. CPS is the third largest school district in the country with 402,000 students and 675 schools attended mostly by Hispanic and Black students, according to CPS data. And students attending charter schools will not be affected if a strike occurs because those charter teachers are not CTU members.

around, and thought he [Winters] was a good choice,” Druker said. Winters acknowledged that while the job is temporary, he would not be opposed to other opportunities in politics if other avenues open up as a result of his appointment. But he said he is fully prepared to go back to work in the Chicago Police Department in January. “I’ll go back to being a police officer, and I’ll continue being active in my community, which I hold close, because I’ve been doing this for a long time,” Winters said. Fioretti said the community is the real winner in this situation regardless of who the committee selected. He said the district has

not been represented since Smith’s arrest. Ald. Jason Ervin was so upset by Smith’s actions earlier this year when he stopped going to work and answering calls from constituents that he took the unusual step of calling a press conference demanding that Smith resign. With Winters appointment, Ervin said he feels much more relaxed. “I think it’s a great day for the district because there are a lot of important legislature bills coming up in the fall session and you don’t want to have a voice in all of that,” Ervin said. “The people of the district deserve to be represented and now they’ve got that for the first time in a long time.”

OPINION

EDITORIAL LABOR DAY AND THE UNEMPLOYED Labor Day has been celebrated for over 100 years on the first Monday in September for the purpose of honoring the social and economic achievements of American workers. This tradition grew out of the labor movement. The first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City. Labor Day was subsequently celebrated the first Monday in September starting in 1884, and the Central Labor Union encouraged the adoption of this holiday in other cities in the nation. It is fitting and proper that working people have a day of honor. What should be the place of such a day, however, during times of mass unemployment like that which is visiting America at this very moment? Every other day, the unemployment figures move up and down, and are usually based upon the number of new unemployment claims filed. This does not provide a true picture of the state of unemployment because a number of people have dropped out of the labor force altogether. They have stopped looking for work. Moreover, because of the increasing devolution of American society, some of the long term unemployed are becoming “unemployable.” Some are ending up homeless or on drugs, or both. There is a saying that if the white community gets a cold, the Black community gets pneumonia. In other words, things that impact the broader community, such as a poor economy and high unemployment, have twice the impact on Blacks because of the history of oppression and its consequent ills. It is easy to blame those who are needy for their circumstances, and no doubt, they may have contributed to their status based on the choices that they have made. But if looked at from a broader standpoint, it becomes obvious that there are other, largely unseen factors that are shaping society to go in a particular direction. It may be hard to believe that individuals exist who actually want things to be the way they are; they WANT the unemployment rates to be double digits among the disadvantaged; they WANT a significant segment of the population to be without healthcare; they WANT a thinning of the herd. (If you doubt the notion that some strive for the thinning of the herd, check out the “Georgia Guide Stones”). The foregoing may seem like wild paranoia, but those visible and invisible plutocrats who control society get what they want, and if things are as they are, it’s because that’s what they WANT! It’s time that we wake up and realize that the chosen few choose themselves. As a collective, we can determine our socioeconomic fate. We can spend money with each other; we can hire each other, and we can wield our economic strength to change our circumstances. There is enough money in the world to change the current situation if resources were allocated correctly, but they aren’t, they are being consumed by the greed of global corporate dictatorships that have as much concern about the unemployed as the average person has about the social life of an ant. If we realize the money that we strive to covet is “fiat” money created out of nothing, then we can make a decision as to whether or not we place value on it. If we could find value elsewhere, for example, in each other as resources, the dirty economic tide might change for the better. What becomes valued is what we decide has value! Realistically, this probably won’t happen in the short term, but what CAN happen is that it is possible to pool resources, and not necessarily just dollars, to help create viable communities. With that said, have a safe LABOR DAY holiday.

I got a magazine from the University of Chicago Medical Center recently and was pleasantly surprised to find a small article about the medical center supporting an “interrupter” for part of the South Side for three years. Some people will remember that “The Interrupters” was a documentary released a year or so ago describing the work of CeaseFire. The interrupters are the men and women who intervene in conflicts and ultimately reduce the levels of violence. CeaseFire operates in several urban areas across the country. Most if not all of the interrupters are ex-offenders who bring a whole lot of street savvy to the job. The workers were paid through grants from the state and nonprofit organizations. The medical center’s plan to underwrite an interrupter probably will cost in the neighborhood of $100,000. That is not considering the interrupters actually save lives – that is documented. So, the question that comes to mind is why can’t other hospitals, large and small, step up and do what the medical center is doing. Chicago has at least a dozen hospitals that can collaborate on this sort of adopt-an-interrupter initiative. The hospitals’ lead could

be the example for others to participate-especially Chicago-based Fortune 1,000 companies. By participating, these corporations will be working to help make Chicago safer for everyone, including their employees. Who can argue against a safer Chicago? Day-after-day we hear people, including public officials say they just don’t know how to eliminate this violence. While that is true, the medical center certainly has given us a method that could be a lead in that direction. I have not heard of anyone else paying to keep an interrupter working, especially for three years. While money may not be the solution, it certainly won’t hurt to have more of it for interrupters. BEYOND THE RHETORIC

A Vile Attempt to Kill a Black Legacy By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist Reverend Leon Sullivan was a great American via his ability to put his vision into reality. A Baptist preacher from a coal town in West Virginia, he evolved into a producer of national job training programs to the Board of Directors for General Motors and the establishment of the Leon Sullivan Foundation. It was through his “Sullivan Principles” that he encouraged major corporations to invest in Africa and ensure their positive “corporate responsibility.” He led the great effort to end apartheid in South Africa. He and other giants such as Randall Robinson were victorious. Africa is further down the “road” through the efforts of Leon Sullivan. His extreme focus on the economic and social development of Africa evolved into his Sullivan Foundation Summits. He would bring a large following from the United States and other nations to assemble in a designated African nation and discuss and propose beneficial initiatives for the sake of Africa’s well being. The summits rotate from nation to nation. Many thousands of people would attend these summits. Business leaders, entertainers, elect-

Harry C. Alford ed officials – especially members of the Congressional Black Caucus would attend and participate in these events. A Leon Sullivan Summit event is a period of great Pan African pride and resolve. Eventually, a new tradition started beginning with the Clinton Administration. The current U.S. President would attend and keynote the current Summit. President Clinton attended and brought a good portion of his administration with him. President George W. Bush attended and gave a brilliant keynote address. He followed that up with an increase of 400 percent in foreign aid and healthcare relief such as the eradica-

tion of much of the malaria problem on the continent. So it was assumed that our halfAfrican president, Barack Obama, would be attending the Sullivan Foundation IX Summit in Equatorial Guinea. This was a big miscalculation. Apparently, and for some strange reason, our current president was adamant that he was not going to attend. As president, he has only been to Africa once and that was a very brief trip where he was a bit condescending to our brothers and sisters in Ghana. He wasn’t going to attend and address the participants. Of course, that was going to be a glaring insult to the Legacy of Rev. Sullivan and an embarrassment for our nation. This was a quandary that needed special finesse. However, the Obama Administration did not choose finesse. Instead they decided to go their typical “divide and conquer” route. A massive campaign of lies and distortions directed at the Sullivan Foundation and the sovereign African nation of Equatorial Guinea was unleashed. Oh, they weren’t looking for a manufactured excuse to not attend. They were determined to destroy the Sullivan Foundation, which is headed by Hope Sullivan Masters – the daughter of

the late Rev. Sullivan. They ordered their contacts to begin a campaign of disinformation, smear and downright falsehoods to lower the image of the foundation. Also, they began, with the same evil fervor, to attack the nation of Equatorial Guinea. They accused this thriving and lovely nation as a human rights disaster. It is a lie! The attack was relentless replete with tweets that would reach a large populace and encourage people not to participate. Democratic elected officials were put on lockdown and could not participate as they usually do. Celebrities associated with the Democratic National Committee were also warned not to attend. Like cowards or frightened slaves they all obeyed. The dirty press operatives began announcing whenever a known official or celebrity would denounce the foundation and the nation of Equatorial Guinea. A written report even claimed that Honorary chair John Kufuor (reputable former president of Ghana) resigned his Chair and would not be coming. Chair Kufuor was there and he was brilliant in his presentations. It was propaganda at its best. In the conspiracy world this is known as “Raising a False Flag.” All this was an attempt to destroy a

great Black legacy and dedicated foundation so that the President’s absence would not look conspicuous. It did not work. They delivered a lot of damage and hurt the attendance but still the Sullivan Foundation IX Summit has been a success. I am writing this article from Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. I am a proud delegate of the Summit and can attest that it is one of the best trips of my life. This nation is beautiful. Cranes and construction projects are everywhere. The people are happy and unemployment is very low as compared to our nation. Access to government officials is very impressive and their Chamber of Commerce has embraced the NBCC members who are attending. Deals are being made! “That which does not kill us; makes us stronger.” That is certainly the case here. History will show that the Sullivan Foundation IX Summit was a success and the half-African U.S. President Barack Obama refused to attend. Evil cannot trump God’s work. Obama’s Mixed Record on Appointing Judges By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist Many speakers at this week’s Republican convention in Tampa have focused on the economy and unemployment as they sought to contrast the Mitt Romney-Paul Ryan GOP ticket with the record of President Barack Obama. But there is another battle underway that is receiving less attention but is at least equally import – the fight to appoint federal judges. For several decades, Republicans have made judicial appointments a top priority. It is still a priority for the GOP and should be one for Democrats, especially because the 5-4 Supreme Court conservative majority could be widened or shifted in the other direction with the possible appointment of two justices over the next four years. Both President Obama and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney have made it clear they would appoint a different kind of judge to the federal bench. So far, the Obama record on appointing judges is like his race – mixed. Obama has appointed two Supreme Court justices – the same number as Bill Clinton and George W. Bush appointed over eight years. He appointed 30 appeals court judges, roughly the The Chicago Crusader

same number that Clinton and Bush averaged over a term. The real difference was at the district court level, where most cases are decided. Obama has appointed only 125 district judges, compared to 170 for Clinton and 162 for Bush at this point of their presidency. Part of the problem was that Obama made judicial appointments a low priority as he tried to push his health reform initiative through Congress. Although he fell far behind Bush’s pace in his first year, he later accelerated the process but not fast enough to equal Bush. A second problem was GOP opposition to Obama’s nominees. Even so, Obama did make significant changes. The number of appeals court judges appointed by Democrats is now 49 percent, a 10 percent increase over when Bush left office. When Obama took office, judges appointed by Democrats dominated only one federal appeals circuit. Now, six of the 13 circuits are dominated by judges appointed by Democrats. An Aug. 17 New York Times article on Obama’s judicial record observed: “…Mr. Obama has also largely shied away from nominating assertive liberals who might stand as ideological counterpoints to some of the assertive conservatives Mr. Bush named. Instead of prominent

George E. Curry liberal academics whose scholarly writings and videotaped panel discussions would provide ammunition to conservatives, Mr. Obama gravitated toward litigators, prosecutors and sitting district judges and state judges, especially those who would diversify the bench.” Many of those were met with Republican obstruction. “The Republicans’ goal has been clear from the start – to keep as many seats as possible vacant for a future Republican president to fill with ultraconservative judges,” noted the Alliance for Justice, an association of more than 100 progressive organizations. Obama’s goal of diversifying the federal bench has been complicated by the American Bar Association, a group of judicial professionals that

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

vets candidates for federal judgeships. The New York Times article stated, “Awkwardly, the American Bar Association’s judicial vetting committee later scuttled at least 14 finalists for nominations – nearly all women and minorities –by declaring them ‘not qualified’.” In 2001, the George W. Bush administration announced that it would cease cooperating with the ABA in advance of judicial nominations, preferring to go with judges favored by the conservative Federalist Society. However, Obama has been unwilling to appoint judges not approved by the ABA. There is a down side to making safe judicial appointments, especially when conservatives are unabashed in their quest to remake the courts. In a report on the last term of the Supreme Court titled, “The OnePercent Court,” the Alliance for Justice observed that in the landmark decision upholding the Affordable Care Act, Justices Elena Kagan, appointed by President Obama and Stephen Breyer, appointed by Bill Clinton, joined the five staunch conservatives on the court in holding that limits can be placed on Congress’ ability to address some national issues, including civil rights, under the commerce clause of the U.S. constitution. Saturday, September 1, 2012

Obama’s only bold move in this area was the nomination of Goodwin Liu, a liberal University of California-Berkeley law professor, to the Ninth Circuit in San Francisco. Senate Republicans blocked his appointment with a filibuster. He briefly considered nominating another liberal, Pamela Karlan of Stanford University, but stayed with candidates that he believed would be more acceptable to Republicans. The Times article stated, “While she said she was not disappointed, Ms. Karlan expressed worries that if Republicans nominated outspoken conservatives but Democrats did not nominate equally liberal ones, the center of mainstream legal debate would shift to the right.” And that’s exactly what has happened. Worrill’s World By Dr. Conrad W. Worrill

A BOOK WE SHOULD ALL READ (Dr. Conrad Worrill, National Chairman Emeritus of the National Black United Front (NBUF) located at 1809 East 71st Street, Suite 211, Chicago, Illinois, 60649, 773-493-0900, Fax# 773-493-9819, E-mail: nbufchic@sbcglobal.net, Web site: nbufront.org)

Dr. Conrad Worrill It is a very important for African people in America to educate and reeducate ourselves about our history and its relationship to the important ideas that shape how we see the world. We are still challenged today to

create an educational climate that inspires African youth in America to understand that the purpose of education is to develop the skills and historical understanding of the past as it relates to the present and future in preparation for working for self and the liberation of African people. This is the challenge of the twenty-first-century to defeat the one hundred year tradition established by white educational leaders who created curriculums for Africans in America designed to prepare them to work for white folks. Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who founded in February of 1926, what at the time was called “Negro History Week,” would indeed be inspired by the ongoing discussion and debate over the contributions of African people to the history of the world. The movement led by Dr. Woodson helped lay the foundation for the current African Centered Education Movement that has become the catalyst for the intense study of Africa and the history of African people throughout the world 365 days a year. We should all read or reread the late Dr. Jacob H. Carruthers’ profound book, Intellectual Warfare. It is very important for African people in America to continue to put forth the effort to educate and reeducate

ourselves about our history and its relationship to the important ideas that shape how we see the world. We must continue this effort to educate and reeducate ourselves everyday to improve the quality of’ life for ourselves and our children. For over thirty-five-years, Dr. Carruthers played a leading role as a scholar and intellectual activist in the development of the African Centered Education Movement. Dr. Carruthers was a tenured professor in the College of Education’s Inner City Studies undergraduate and graduate programs at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago, Illinois and retired as Professor Emeritus. Along with Dr. Anderson Thompson, Dr. Carruthers helped shape both the undergraduate and graduate curricula that have become known throughout the country for providing a theoretical and practical understanding of the impact of the political, economic, social, and cultural forces on people who live in the inner cities throughout the world. Of course, one of the largest groups to live in the inner cities is African people. Therefore, a great deal of Dr. Carruthers’ writings and lectures concentrated on the white supremacy intellectual assault on African people and the world. Dr. Carruthers has been magnificent in exposing the European intellectual tyranny

and its impact on the education of African people. It was through his association with the late, great Senegalese scholar, Dr. Cheikh Anta Diop and the late, great scholar / teacher, Dr. John Henrik Clarke that helped propel the genius of Dr. Carruthers’ insight into the “Deep Well” of the African Worldview. As the founding President of the Association for the Study of Classical African Civilizations (ASCAC), Dr. Carruthers helped shape an organizational format for African Centered scholars, teachers, students, and the overall African Community to have a collective vehicle in which to pursue the building of the African Centered Education Movement. His leadership, in this regard, has been monumental and inspiring to hundreds of scholars, teachers, and students throughout the African World Community. In this connection, Dr. Carruthers’ book, Intellectual Warfare, prepares us to function in the twenty-first-century with a sharper understanding of our challenges as an African people. The book is organized into five sections. Part I: The Nature of the War; Part II: Defenders of Western Civilization; Part III: Intellectual Civil War; Part IV: The Champions of African Centered Thought; and Part V: Toward the Restoration of

African Civilizations. In the preface of Intellectual Warfare, Dr. Carruthers explains, “These essays reflect the thought of the ‘Chicago group’ and the ‘African Community of Chicago.’ I was simply a vehicle through whom ideas flowed. Even the mistakes are our mistakes rather than mine alone. The conceptualization of our work as Intellectual Warfare emerged out of the actual battles in which we were engaged.” In the first chapter, Dr. Carruthers instructs us by pointing out, “Thus, those who have been waging the long war to liberate African history and culture have been fighting the following two battles: (1) an international war against the European intellectuals and (2) a civil war against the colonized African spokespersons who are trained by Europeans to undermine African independence. The war is truly, as Dr. Anderson Thompson says, “a battle for the African mind,” or as the late Dr. Asa G. Hilliard, III and the First World Alliance put it, “a battle to free the African mind.” Those who believe in the just cause of the long war to liberate African history and culture must read and reread and study Dr. Carruthers’ most insightful observations, wisdom, and his “Deep Well” of understanding that is shared in Intellectual Warfare.

SAME OLD SONG By Julianne Malveau NNPA Columnist When I was all of 16 years old, I went to get a passport. Why? Richard Nixon had been elected president, and I was sure that he would impose such oppression that I might need to get out of the country. Never mind that I had not two quarters to rub together and was under such parental supervision that I might not have made it to the corner without being hit upside the head. I used my own little babysitting money to obtain that passport because I felt that our nation was changing. In retrospect, Nixon wasn’t that bad. He actually did a few things to jump start minority business development, including signing an executive order that spoke to economic justice, in these words. I appreciated President Jimmy Carter, but he was torpedoed by Iran. I actually spent a minute as a junior staffer in Carter’s Council of Economic Advisors while a 6

that he would not be kind to the least and the left out. Indeed, overall unemployment exceeded

10 percent under his leadership, but he was very popular for his ability to influence public opinion. His terms were marred by the Iran-contra scandal, and in the name of deregulation, he implicitly dismantled or weakened several federal agencies. Yet some will point to his support of HBCUs, his uncomfortable visits to Howard and Hampton Universities, where he expected protests, but showed up anyway. With that, in retrospect, Reagan might have had minor redeeming social value to the African American community, but from my perch he was repressive. Then there was George Herbert Walker Bush, the President whose aching unfamiliarity with the lives of ordinary people bit him in his hind parts in the 1992 election. Bush wasn’t awful to African American people. I think the utter worst thing he did was appoint Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court, describing an ordinary jurist as the best he could find, and raising issues of race,

gender, and cultural loyalty at the same time. Lots of prominent African Americans supported Thomas because he was Black, only to learn that this damaged man thought that a prison guard who broke a prisoner’s dental plate in his mouth did not inflict cruel and unusual punishment. President William Jefferson Clinton was amazingly effective. African American unemployment rates dropped to 7 percent or so. The economy grew. African Americans thought they had a friend, even though Clinton’s welfare reform was controversial and, from my perspective, marred his legacy. Whatever you say about Bill Clinton, he left our country better than he found it. He made brilliant appointments of African American leaders, including naming Hazel O’Leary Secretary of Energy and Mike Espy Secretary of Agriculture, both unusual positions for Africa American leaders. While flawed in many ways, the Clinton years are years to be celebrated.

Not those of the man the late Molly Ivins called Shrub, as in Baby Bush. This man stole an election and then mumbled and stumbled his way though his first term, suggesting that consumerism would save us from the economic draught engendered by September 11. Give me a break! Still, Baby Bush won a second term, and continued to wreak havoc on our economy, cutting taxes on the wealthy, burdening the poor and the middle class. Bush also decided to give bankers a break and a bailout. He pre sided over the greatest giveaway from our nation’s poorest people to the wealthy when he decided that banks that ripped us off should get a break. Why this walk down memory lane? Because President Obama’s work is being questioned, and his achievements of four years put on the line. This president deserves re-election, and every able bodied progressive should set out to dedicate themselves to making that (Continued on page 16) The Chicago Crusader

The Domino Effect of Student Debt By Charlene Crowell NNPA Columnist

When this year’s student debt burden surpassed the $1 trillion mark, it became even larger than the amount of debt held on credit cards. New findings now conclude that heavy student loan debt delays the ability of young graduates to buy a home and in the worst scenarios, strips Social Security benefits and even disability income paid under Supplemental Security Income. “There has been a 46 percent increase in average debt held at graduation from 2000 to 2010. Moreover, total outstanding debt held by the public has skyrocketed 511 percent over the past decade,” according to Denied: The Impact of Student Debt on the Ability to Buy a House, a new research paper by the Young Invincibles, a national youth advocacy group. Their research shows that the challenges of becoming a homeowner are magnified with student debt. Student loan debt has been rising much more rapidly than salaries for college graduates. When researchers compared salaries of the typical single student loan borrower to the cost of

a median-priced house, they concluded that potential borrowers with a student loan and average consumer debt are not likely to qualify for a mortgage. If a married couple carries a double burden of student debt, it becomes even harder to qualify. Although student loans are usually considered to be a problem for young people, the reality is that many seniors share the same debt dilemma. The Treasury Department reported earlier this year that people ages 60 and older owed $2.2 million on student loans that were 90 days or more past due. As a result, Treasury reduced benefit payments on Social Security checks for 115,000 retirees. Legally, the share of benefits withheld can be as high as 15 percent. In 2005, the United States Supreme Court upheld two federal laws that enable the government to take money from federal benefits to make student loan payments. The Higher Education Technical Amendments Act allows the federal government to collect funds without statutory limitations from defaulters. A second and related act, the Debt Collection Improvement Act, authorizes reductions in Social Se-

Charlene Crowell curity payments for past due student loan borrowers. The only exemption to this second law is on monthly benefits of $750 or less. Consumers who owe $60,000 or more on federal student loans are allowed by Treasury to take as long as 30 years to repay the loan. An additional eight years of repayment is allowed in the event of economic hardship or longterm unemployment. In these in-

stances, payments are deferred while the interest continues to accrue. Who would ever have imagined that a student loan repayment would take 30 years or more? In bygone years the only loans that incurred such lengthy indebtedness were mortgages. Consumers with blemished credit scores or those with limited funds for a down payment may seek an Fair Housing Administration (FHA) or Veterans Affairs (VA) financing with down payments as low as 3.5 percent. However these loans can be expensive and typically take a longer time to be approved. Since October 2010 three separate price increases on FHA loans have occurred. The most recent was the addition of an upfront mortgage premium payment announced in April that will add $1,500 in upfront costs for a typical home of $200,000. The domino effect of debt begins with a student loan and then delays the ability to qualify for a mortgage. With other consumer debt payments such as car loans, and credit cards taking a larger share of net income, the ability to gain wealth is limited if not stymied.

Consumers opting for rental housing may find the monthly payment more affordable on a cash-flow basis; but no equity or wealth is derived on rentals. Further, as the rental housing market has tightened, the cost of rental housing continues to increase, leaving fewer disposable dollars to save for a home down payment. And if parents or grandparents signed for a student loan, the benefits they worked for most of their lives are siphoned and tarnish what ought to be the proverbial ‘golden years.’ The Denied report reaches a thoughtful conclusion: “Policymakers who may be unmotivated by individual struggles of borrowers, or unconvinced of the extent of the problem today, would be wise to begin to view student debt in an additional light: as an encumbrance on the recovery of the housing market, and as a result, a potential hindrance to economic growth.” Charlene Crowell is a communications manager for the Center for Responsible Lending. MUSIC MAKES THE WORLD GO AROUND By Cheryl Pearson-McNeil NNPA Columnist When you and I talk about technological leaps and bounds, frequently we’re focused on the way we communicate with each other. And, I write here a lot about what we watch and how we watch it. But, let me ask you this: What are you listening to today, and perhaps, even more interestingly – how are you listening to it? My assumption that you are indeed very likely to listen to music today is an educated one, as results from new Nielsen Entertainment and Nielsen 360 studies show that music is an everyday activity for most people in this country. Those comprehensive results report that 70 percent of people 13+ actively listen to music at least once a day. Ninety percent of people actively listen at least several times a week.

or turntable – which played records – came 8-tracks, cassette players, boom boxes, the Walkman, then the Discman. “The accessibility of music has seen tremendous expansion and diversification,” reports Nielsen Entertainment’s David Bakula. His research also confirms that radio still rules as the number one way consumers access music. This is how we listen: • Radio 48% • Computer 44% • CD player 39% • iPod® (other than phone) 27% • Home stereo 23% • TV 21% • MP3 player (other than an iPod® or phone) 17% • Android® phone 13% • iPhone® 12% • Satellite Radio 10%

40/Oldies and Alternative Rock. Data shows those who preferred Hip-Hop/R&B also listen to Pop/Top40/Rap/Classic Rock and Alternative Rock. Of course, there is also taste for Jazz, Adult Contemporary, Gospel/Religious and others.

For young people, though, the numbers are a little different. YouTube® is the way most listen to music. As the mom of a musicloving teenage son, I can testify to this. Take a look: • 64% of teens listen to music through YouTube® • 56% of teens listen to music on the radio • 53% listen through iTunes® • 50% listen on CDs

We love our music and both exposure and consumption continue to increase. So, now, how are you listening to your music? Remember back in the dark ages when AM/FM radio was the way to go, when transistor radios (which went the way of the dinosaur) were considered cool? In addition to your personal stereo

When we refer to listening via computer, iPods®, MP3 players or phones, we’re often referring to internet radio, digital downloads of singles and albums and on-demand streaming. These days, of course, albums don’t necessarily mean vinyl – although data shows there is resurgence in interest in vinyl albums – it typically means CDs and digital albums.

It’s interesting to note, too, that new hot artists aren’t always the most listened to or biggest selling. Because of her heavy exposure, Nikki Minaj’s “Super Bass” was the most streamed song in 2011, with over 86 million plays/views, beating out singles by Adele, LMFAO, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. With all the ways to consume music, a couple of more traditional artists made Nielsen’s top 10 list for the first six months of 2012. Whitney Houston was number two across all platforms, with appreciation and interest likely spiked by her untimely death, which is often the case; Rihanna was number six; and Lionel Ritchie, who, of course, has been around for decades, came in at number eight – outselling all the others in digital tracks and

Cheryl Pearson-McNeil streaming plays. This is probably because of Ritchie’s foray into the Country genre. And, that’s interesting because respondents to Nielsen’s survey typically classified themselves as either Country fans or Hip-Hop/R&B fans. The reality is that people who put themselves in either of those categories actually enjoy a much broader spectrum of music. Country music fans also reported preferring Rock/Classic/Pop/Top

Another interesting stat is that even though new digital track releases are likely to be purchased by younger consumers immediately after their release, catalog sales are outpacing current sales. Catalog music is at least 18 months old, which includes all the classics. Nielsen analysts attribute much of this to Multimedia Integration. Think about it. How many traditional artists have you seen or heard on TV shows like “American Idol,” “The Voice” or “Glee?” It’s another trend to watch as all genres of music are everywhere more than ever. And, you, the music loving consumer, have far greater control (and power) over how you access yours. TECH TALK Keeping It Real In A Virtual World Parents: Get Digitally Educated Or Become A Non-Factor By Billy Montgomery When television made its thrust into society one major concern was not allowing children to watch too much of it. There was a real push to monitor programming with children and have discussions with them about what they were watching. While this still the case in some households, a new generation, being raised digitally, has caused the scrutiny to not be as severe for some, while others bury their heads in the sand because they don’t understand the new technology. While it is just a struggle at times being a parent, things got just that much tougher when the digital age took the world by storm. Studies far and near demonstrate the lasting effects of technology on children. While parents are inundated with work and other aspects of parenting, technology is doing a tap dance on the minds of our children making it difficult at times to separate what’s good and what’s bad. Today’s children are what “techperts” like to call “digital natives,” but their parents are seen as immi-

grants because while they were born before their offspring, the digital age was born with their children. So, our children are teaching us, literally in many cases, how to navigate through the tech world. This expedition is difficult for many busy parents who are just becoming comfortable with many online financial transactions. However, no matter how hard the adjustment to the rapidly changing digital landscape may be, parents must stay abreast and keep up because there is no way to determine the vast impact the virtual world will affect children and society in general. Inappropriate content through “cyberbullying” via social media and sexting on cell phones are just as important concerns as worrying about online privacy for children, or them surfing the Web for inappropriate content. As with any new mode of technology, the digital world is not all bad. In fact, there are some truly valuable tools that can maximize children’s use of technology while minimizing harm. But you have to take the bad with the good in order to discern

dren from the cursed influences? It is not an option to simply ignore what they are immersed in. Honestly, parents may never be able to manage the digital take over, but they must monitor what takes place in it or risk or subject their children to a world that can be quite overwhelming at times. This requires quite an investment but the benefits are invaluable. The pay-off for the investment will allow your family to learn that technology is a tool to enhance their lives rather than a toy to simply play with. Additionally, your children will move from being victims to vigilant masters, who use technology for all its benefits and avoid the dangerous pitfalls. The real outcome would fuse old school values with new technological skills, which would be beneficial for society onand offline. New CCC program prepares students for jobs of tomorrow City Colleges’ College to Careers (C2C) initiative is up and running, with nine new or enhanced degree and certificate programs available to students this fall. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced the programs recently during a press conference with Chancellor Cheryl Hyman and C2C industry partners. The programs prepare students for jobs in the healthcare and transportation, distribution and logistics (TDL) industries, and are the product of months of collaboration between CCC faculty and staff and leading companies in the two fields.

al programs with the needs of high-growth industries.

“Industry leaders are providing insight into what’s needed for the jobs of tomorrow, so we can prepare our students today,” Mayor Emanuel said. He launched the C2C initiative with CCC in December 2011 to close Chicago’s skills gap by aligning occupation-

“Our graduates will have the opportunity to continue to earn credentials to elevate their nursing career at an affordable cost, and with the flexibility of online classes that allows them to work while pursuing a degree,” continued Chancellor Hyman.

Along with its new and enhanced programs, which range from a basic certificate in medical billing and coding to an advanced certificate in supply chain management, CCC has a new partnership with the University of Illinois to give CCC nursing students guaranteed spots in UIC’s premier online Bachelors in Nursing (BSN) program. The transfer agreement allows CCC graduates to complete the program for about half the cost of normal tuition.

CPS Inducts 6,003 local school Council Members for Two-Year Term Members Will Play Vital Role in Governance of Schools Chicago Public Schools (CPS) held a special inauguration ceremony at the Chicago Journey-

men Plumbers Hall to induct newly elected Local School Council (LSC) representatives. Mayor Rahm Emanuel joined CPS CEO JeanClaude Brizard at the ceremony and celebrated with hundreds of parents, community members and CPS staff from across the District recently elected for the

two-year term, which runs through June 30, 2014. Local School Councils are governing bodies that play a significant role in decision-making at the local school level, empowering parents and the school community to partner with their principals in creating a positive school environment that best serves the needs of all children. LSC members serve as an important link between a school’s administration, community, Central Office and students. “On behalf of CPS, I congratulate all of our new LSC members. Serving on one’s Local School Council is the most important role a parent or community member

can have in supporting their schools and students,” said CEO Brizard. “Over the next two years, we look forward to collaborating with each LSC to provide the high-quality education our students deserve.” LSC members are primarily responsible for approving how local school funds and resources are allocated and approving and monitoring the implementation of the annual School Improvement Plans for Advancing Academic Enhancement (SIPAAA) plan. They also hire and evaluate the school’s contract principal. Each LSC is made up of six parents, two community members, two teachers, one non-teacher

staff member and the school’s principal. High school LSCs also have a student representative. Parents are eligible for seats on the LSC of the school their children attend, as are members of each school’s community, and the teachers and non-teaching staff from the school. LSC members cannot be employees of the Chicago Board of Education nor can relatives of the principal be eligible to serve on the LSC of that principal’s school. The Chicago Public Schools serves approximately 402,000 students in more than 675 schools. It is the nation’s thirdlargest school system.

SXU NAIA Champion football players host youth football clinic Saint Xavier University’s 2011 NAIA Championship football team kicked off its new season by hosting a youth football training clinic on Aug. 21 at The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center, 1250 W. 119th St., Chicago. Head Coach Mike Feminis and 10 of SXU’s top players worked with boys ages nine to 18 to share what it takes to be a championship football team through agility drills, training routines, and exercises. Feminis said the tenets of a successful football team include hard

work, extensive training, and exceptional teamwork – all attributes that contributed to SXU’s phenomenal NAIA championship last season. Feminis added that it’s equally important “to maintain outstanding academic records and to constantly seek out opportunities to give back to the community.” “We have been praying that this year would be the year we could bring football back to the South Side of Chicago,” said Senior Kroc Officer Major David Harvey. “For years football has been disappearing from Chicago and

the South Suburbs. We believe the Kroc Center can help to bring back this sport and others through this state of the art center and fields. The only thing we were missing to kick this off was someone to help start the initiative and excitement, train and motivate our coaches and young people interested in football. It was a godsend to have Saint Xavier University staff call and share that their football team would help get us started. We thank the team and university for believing in the dreams and talents of our kids on the South

Side. This is truly the beginning of a great partnership and miracle for us all. Red Hook Summer – Spike Lee is back!

CHAZZ MORNINGSTAR LOOKS on as Do Good Bishop Enoch Rouse tries to will Flik to accept Christ. Veteran director Spike Lee’s new movie Red Hook Summer is (A): A coming-of-age story about a young, Black, middle-class boy from Atlanta who calls himself Flik; (B): Lee’s thrashing of Black folks about their social and cultural shortcomings or (C): Lee’s campaign platform and speech were he to run for public office. No matter what viewers might think of Red Hook Summer, the film is all three, as well as vintage Lee. I dodged the rain to see this movie August 26 because I have been supporting Lee since I saw his first feature length film during the weekend in August 1986 when my father died, after a short 3-1/2 weeks of suffering from lung cancer. That movie was She’s Gotta Have It, and at that time was playing in limited release at the Fine Arts Theatre. Because Lee didn’t have major Hollywood backing, Red Hook Summer is also only playing in limited release in Chicago. Flik can’t seem to tear away from his iPad for a minute, and he is deposited at his grandfather’s doorstep in the Red Hook housing projects in New York’s Brooklyn neighborhood by his mother, who is also estranged from the grandfather. How a woman could just drop her son off with her father—one with whom she barely has contact—is beyond me. Flik doesn’t want to be there, and his mother doesn’t even come into the grandfather’s home before going to catch her return flight to Atlanta. The

grandfather, whose name is Do Good Bishop Enoch Rouse, is head of the local Little Peace of Heaven Baptist Church of Red Hook. The Bishop is played by Clark Peters of Treme and The Wire fame. He’s a Bible-thumping, verse reading preacher, but he is also harboring a secret that will come out before the movie ends. His secret is among the many themes highlighted in Red Hook Summer, along with poverty, health care disparities, drug dealing, gang banging, nihilism and the scourges of social media. And just as there are classic Lee situations that we expect from him, as he tells his “Brooklyn” story, there are also familiar faces in Red Hook Summer. Tracy Camilla Johns of She’s Gotta Have It fame plays Sister Darling in scenes that bring to mind Roger Guenveur Smith’s Smiley character from Lee’s Do the Right Thing. Thomas Jefferson Byrd, who has appeared in many Lee films, plays Deacon Zee. He seems to channel Ossie Davis’ role of DA Mayor from Do the Right Thing. When he gets his fill of “Jesus juice,” he is bent on delivering diatribes against President Barack Hussein Obama, Wall Street and other demonstrated ills of the Black community. Isiah Whitlock, Jr., plays a detective, as he did in Lee’s 25th Hour. And, of course, Lee reprises his pizza delivery guy role, but now he’s “Mr.” Mookie. But newcomers Brown and

Toni Lysaith, as Chazz Morningstar who befriends Flik, give good performances. It is her job to show Flik around the neighborhood and guide him at the church. He has to clean the church daily, at the command of the Bishop, in anticipation of a church reunion of past members. Chazz suffers from asthma, and she boasts that she and her single mother live in the same apartment as the great Knicks basketball player Carmelo Anthony. (Oh, I forgot to mention that basketball is also prominent in this movie). The movie’s dramatic church scene where the Bishop is called out for his past sins is one of the movie’s better sequences. The consequences of his sins catch up with him in a brutal way, and another issue that is routinely covered up in some Black families comes to the forefront. While the movie is classic Lee, some may tire of seeing the same story. But the issues that beset the Black community are still relevant, and Lee is the one to unabashedly lay it all on the table. However, it is nice to see Flik open up to new ideas, as we see normal Black youth doing normal things during a summer in urban America—something that audience members can count on Lee to deliver time after time. Red Hook Summer is playing in limited release in Chicago: AMC Theatres and ICE Chatham among the venues. The Chicago Crusader

Bernie By Elaine Hegwood Bowen Bernie is a movie based on a real life story of a wealthy widow who is killed by the local funeral director, after the two become friends during her husband’s funeral. Jack Black plays the funeral director, and veteran actress Shirley MacLaine plays the evil, short-tempered widow from the town of Carthage, Texas. It was funny watching Bernie, because it is really a dark comedy, where you are laughing at one moment, because things are just downright funny and the next moment you are laughing because the situation has turned kind of weird. Comic actor Black is in new terri-

tory, as he is playing a serious role of someone who comes to Texas and is hired over the phone to help out the local funeral director. Black’s personality is alluring, most people love him, and the lonely widows are treated to personal aftercare, where he comes to visit and makes sure they are doing alright, long after he buries their late husbands. MacLaine has been estranged from her own family: her sons and granddaughters. They even sit apart from one another during her husband’s funeral. But eventually Black pays MacLaine special attention, and it is the relationship that he builds with her that initially causes townspeople to talk. As the two are

seen around town in cozy displays of affection, MacLaine is less mean, but is even more possessive of Black, as they travel the world over. And while it seems fun at first, eventually Black feels smothered, because he can’t make a move without MacLaine clocking his every moment, as he runs a performance arts troupe as they prepare for an upcoming performance. On the other hand, MacLaine is having the time of her life, and she has company, while she and Black share living quarters and everything else. While Black is a beloved fixture in the community, MacLaine is despised by most. So, when Black just can’t take it any longer and he gets rid of MacLaine, the murder goes unnoticed for a while. Eventually the town's flamboyant District Attorney, played by Matthew McConaughey, gets nosey and gradually puts all the missing pieces together.

The Bookworm Sez “The Courage to Hope”

By Shirley Sherrod with Catherine Whitney c.2012, Atria $24.99 / $28.99 Canada 240 pages, includes notes Some days, you get a little bit of exercise. You hear a good story, and you pounce on it. You spin it to make it funny, bend the facts for more entertainment, and jump to conclusions to make it interesting. The truth might get stretched but when you’re running a good tale, who cares? Someone does – especially if it’s about to ruin their life. In the new book “The Courage to Hope” by Shirley Sherrod (with Catherine Whitney), you’ll read about one such event. Shirley Sherrod was born facing racism. Her father owned their family farm, but the county in which it sat was ruled by whites who relished their positions. Jim Crow laws were enforced for longer than elsewhere and federal laws and mandates were basically ignored. Sherrod’s own father was killed by a white man who was never punished for it. At this same time, though she

(Continued from page 4) home or drive up to a business and see the undecipherable markings of some gang staring back at them? Graffiti is in no way just simple markings from a can of spray paint. While it does send the message to opposing gangs that there is some gang activity in the area; it tells those uninterested, too old, or just visiting that they probably don’t want to be in that area because there IS gang activity. And that raises a new set of concerns as people begin to become concerned about their own safety and welfare. Someone looking to locate a small business in a particular neighborhood is likely to be turned off upon seeing all the prospective sites are splattered with gang insignias. City officials will be hard pressed to push residents to beautify their neighborhoods when

the city is not interested in doing so. This graffiti removal squad surely has to be one of the smallest operations within the city. I have to believe that Emanuel and the city council could make cuts in their respective staffs. Honestly, I don’t see that we get the value we should from our taxes from either of those offices, and I doubt if I am alone. This is just a dumb decision by the mayor. Maybe there are some understanding minds on the council and they will introduce some legislation to get the graffiti removal staff back to full strength. If that can’t be done, then the city needs to admit the gangbangers have won this one for now, and then encourage residents to set up ward-by-ward funds and hire local people to do the cleaning.

didn’t know him then, Sherrod’s future husband was working hard within the Civil Rights movement. When they first met, she thought Charles Sherrod was too skinny. She admits she wasn’t very impressed with him – until she heard him speak. Weeks later, they were inseparable, later married, and Sherrod joined her husband in the movement. Because she’d come from farmers, Sherrod knew she wanted to work on behalf of farm families. The Sherrods purchased good Georgia land and established a communal farm, modeled on a kibbutz that Charles had visited. “Creativity” led to a farm-fresh market operated from the farm’s grounds. But when the farm was lost, the activist in Sherrod reappeared. She Saturday, September 1, 2012

fought discrimination that occurred during the loss, and started officially working for farmers. That ultimately led to an appointment to the position of Georgia Director of Rural Development. Though it seemed, at first, that the office was meant to help Black farmers, Sherrod saw that farming wasn’t a racial issue. All farmers needed help and she was happy to get involved. So happy, in fact, that she said so at a NAACP meeting. It was a speech that was dissected, and started a firestorm. Filled with grace, dignity, and indignity, “The Courage to Hope” seemed to me like a double book, one part then and one part now. Fortunately, both are impressive. With a voice that still seems a bit baffled by what occurred, author Shirley Sherrod (with Catherine Whitney) writes about confusion and outrage following the manipulation of a bit of her speech that led to her very public job-loss in 2010. Sherrod very squarely lays blame in this book, and though she doesn’t accuse President Obama or his staffers, she’s not complimentary. I liked Sherrod’s life story, which is the other part of this book. It shows readers the foundation that gave Sherrod strength, and it’s a very good (although cringe-worthy) peek back in time. This is one of those books that makes you want to yell, cry, and stand up and cheer. It’s outrageous and triumphant and if you can handle that, then “The Courage to Hope” is a book to leap at. 13

Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place Sunday, September 9 at Montrose Harbor in Chicago. Nearly 4,250 people from the Chicago area are expected at this year’s event to raise awareness and funds to fight Alzheimer’s disease. Each walker will also join in a meaningful tribute ceremony to honor those affected by Alzheimer's disease. Today, 5.4 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and another American develops Alzheimer’s every 68 seconds. The Alzheimer’s Association Special Report on Race, Ethnicity and Alzheimer’s, which was released in conjunction with the organization’s 2010 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures, cited research indicating that in the United States, older African-Americans are probably about two times more likely than older whites to have Alzheimer’s and other dementias. The report goes on to state that no known genetic factors can account for the differences in the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease

and other dementias among different racial groups, but that conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes, both of which are known risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, are more common in older African-Americans than older whites and likely account for some of the disparity. “MOOS-WORTHY” ENDORSEMENT — Illinois Governor Pat Quinn demonstrated his commitment to child health and wellness by signing a pledge to support Fuel Up to Play 60 during an event August 14 in the Dairy Building at the Illinois State Fair. The free in-school health and wellness program, provided here by Midwest Dairy Council and the Chicago Bears, encourages youth to fuel-up with low-fat dairy and other nutrient-rich foods and to get out at play at least 60 minutes every day. The Governor’s endorsement recognizes the efforts of the 3,800 Illinois schools participating in the program. To date, the dairy community has awarded more than $175,000 in funding to help jumpstart and champion school wellness efforts. Pictured here with Governor Quinn at the pledge-signing are Fuel Up to Play 60 student ambassadors, Alejandro Guadarrama of Miguel Juarez Middle School in Waukegan, Angelique Livingston of Burr Ridge Middle School, and Anthony Morgan #81, former Bears wide receiver. SAME OLD SONG (Cont’d from page 6) happen. No, he hasn’t done everything we’d like, but he has done more that John McCain would have done, more than we can ever expect Mitt Romney to do. The polls are saying this thing is neck in neck, and conservative commentators are saying that Obama must go. Rather than sing “We Shall Overcome” the day after this election, we ought to sing “I Shall Not Be Moved” before it. But here is the bottom line; we are singing the same old

song. We African Americans never get everything we need from elected officials. Let’s reelect President Obama, but let’s also decide to get our acts together to work independently from elective politics to attain social and economic justice. Otherwise, we are in the same old space, with a different meaning whatever we face. ‘We have survived, we will thrive, if we take our destiny into our own hands. Make a Splash Chicago a huge success Over 250 kids interact with Gold medal swimmer Cullen Jones at Washington Park By J. Coyden Palmer The lives of hundreds of city kids will never be the same after their encounter last week with U.S. Olympic swimmer Cullen Jones. The first African American to get a Gold medal in swimming was at the Washington Park Aquatic Center on August 25 as a part of the Make a Splash water safety fair. Sponsored by Phillips 66, the event provided kids of all ages with the opportunity to learn basic swimming skills from Jones and other instructors, in addition to safety tips for parents when their children are around water. In the Chicago area this summer, 10 children have drowned since June 14, according to data collected by doctors at Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. And according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in five fatal drowning victims are children under the age of 14 and it is estimated that 60-70 percent of African American children cannot swim. “Every child in America needs to learn how to swim,” said Jones, win-

ner of one gold and two silver medals at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. “Drowning is an epidemic, but it’s an epidemic with a cure.” Jones said he was particularly pleas ed with the high turnout in Chicago on a warm Saturday morning. He said of all the cities that he has visited thus far on his tours for the past four years; Chicago has consistently had the most interest and Saturday’s event was the biggest thus far. The four-time Olympic medal recipient overcame his own fear of water after he nearly drowned as a child. Instead of staying away from water like many do after such a traumatic experience, Jones had to face the water again, as his mother enrolled him in swimming lessons, he said that not only saved his life, but gave him a career. “I never want another parent to go through what my parents went through when I almost drowned,” Jones told the crowd. “When I was 12 years old my mother sat in the living room and cried as she told me about how she almost lost me, her only child, when I was five. It’s amaz-

is dedicated to saving lives and building champions, and by raising awareness about the importance of learning to swim and providing the opportunity for kids to take lessons, we are absolutely saving lives,” Hesse said. “Formal swimming lessons can reduce a child’s risk of drowning by as much as 80%. To date more than 1.3 million kids have taken lessons through our Make a Splash initiative.” In addition to swimming activities, Jones brought out his gold medal from the Olympics for everyone to see. Many said they would have never imagined in their lifetime seeing a Black man winning a medal in a sport like swimming. Jones said breaking down that stereotype is

Now I can stand on my soapbox from the top of the mountain and say ‘please, teach your children how to swim.’ Kenneth Reid brought both of his daughters to the event so they could meet a Black man who has made history and for the free lessons. His youngest daughter is seven and does not know how to swim. Reid said he believes it is a critical life skill that all parents should insist their children learn. “One of the main reasons I came out, besides to meet Cullen, is because I don’t know how to swim myself,” Reid confessed. “I don’t want them to follow in my footsteps in this regard. So I really think the kids need to learn how to swim because there have been way too many incidents of drowning in our community this year.” Reid’s oldest daughter Isabelle has been swimming for 10 years. Now 14, she came to the event hoping learn how to improve on her back and breast strokes. “Right now I’m just an okay swimmer,” she said. “I want to get better
