Youth tired of being profiled based on their clothes By Wendell Hutson Youth from all over the city gathered this week to protest what they said was an unjustifiable killing in Florida after a 17 yearold Black male was shot allegedly because he wore a hoodie and gym shoes. The popular combination of clothes worn by so many youth today often makes them ‘suspects’ in the eyes of law enforcement and adults, said Chandler Green, 15. “Just because I wear a hoodie and I have my head covered up, and my jeans sag and I have on gym shoes, do not mean I am a thug, gang banger or drug dealer,” he said. “It might mean I am a young man trying to find my way. No different than any other adult when they were my age.” Green was among a crowd of 800 people, mostly youth, who gathered Tuesday evening at Sweet Holy Spirit Church on the South Side to protest the Feb. 26 shooting death of Trayvon Martin. George Zimmerman, a volunteer community watchman, admitted shooting Martin but said he did so in self-defense after Martin attacked him. Police in Sanford, Fla. where the killing occurred said when they interviewed Zimmerman the night of the killing he was bleeding from the nose and the back of his head. He was not charged though and Blacks from across the country are outraged.
That frustration was heard loud and clear this week at Sweet Holy Spirit where parents and teens wore hoodies and gym shoes to symbolize the attire many youth often have on when they are slained. And more than 500 pair of gym shoes were left at the church’s altar where they will stay until Easter Sunday service on April 8, said Bishop Larry Trotter, pastor of Sweet Holy Spirit Church. “We need to send a message to the world that we are not going to let our youth be killed by society one by one,” said Trotter, a longtime community activist. “As a community that cares we need to stand up for our youth at all times and not wait for something bad to happen to them before we respond. We need to be more proactive and less reactive.” At the rally Trotter read the names of 41 youth between the ages six and 20 who were killed so far this year. Michael Brass, 17, said his friend was one of those youth. “He was killed March 1. He went to the corner store for his mom to get some sugar and when as he left out gangs started shooting at each other and he was hit,” Brass emotionally recalled as he fought back tears. “He was my dog from grammar school. We did everything together except die. I miss my dog.” Trotter explained that the reason why he
held the community event was to bring awareness to a growing problem in America among youth and that’s the misconception that based on how youth are dressed they are a danger to society.
“A lot of people were not able to go to the rallies in Florida for Trayvon Martin so I decided to have one here. But this is bigger (Continued on page 17)
TRAYVON MARTIN AND other youth who have been killed were remembered during a peace rally this week at Sweet Holy Spirit Church on the South Side. Gym shoes are big among youth and more than 500 pairs were left at the South Side church during the rally.
Mo’ Money accused of targeting Blacks for tax scheme By Wendell Hutson Each year Ronald Barber depends on his federal income tax refund check to help make ends meet. But this year Barber like so many other low-income filers are wondering if they will ever get their income tax refund prepared by Mo’ Money Taxes. “I was told in February that I would receive a $3,874 tax refund but I am still waiting,” Barber said. “I’m sure they (Mo’ Money) got their money but I am still waiting on mine. Every time I ask them about it, they tell me to be patient and that the ‘check is in the mail.’ Sure it is.” The 33 year-old warehouse clerk grossed
$21,000 last year but with his two daughters he claims every year on his taxes he normally gets a refund of $3,000 or more, he said. “This is ridiculous. It has been over a month now and I still have not gotten my check and it is starting to piss me off,’ he added. And Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan said Barber is not alone when it comes to being pissed off. In fact, Madigan said 2,400 people, most who are Black, might also be pissed off after having their taxes prepared by Mo’ Money based in Memphis, Tenn. “We have seen this company over the years focus its advertising in minority com-

Community center dream moves closer to a reality By Wendell Hutson After spending 94 days sleeping on the roof of an abandoned South Side motel, community activist Corey Brooks Sr. is no longer dreaming about building a community center but has now taken steps to make it a reality. The 34-year-old pastor of New Beginnings Church, 6620 S. King Drive, said his quest to rid the Woodlawn community on the South Side of drugs, prostitution and youth violence continues despite raising the $450,000 needed to purchase the motel’s land and demolish the building. The last $100,000 of that was donated by film maker Tyler Perry “We’re going to tear a building down today,” Brooks said Tuesday as construction crews demolished the Super Motel at 6625 S. King Drive. “Tearing this down, for us, represents our hopes being ready to go up, and a lot of faith being put into something, and a major thing being accomplished.” The $15 million community center he aims to build for the community will give youth an alternative to the streets and force drug dealers, gang bangers and prostitutes to find somewhere else to hang out besides the local motel.
residents to be able to get the social services they need without being discouraged because they must travel far to receive help.” However, the Best Motel is another hourly motel in the area and located one block from the church at 6535 S. King Drive. Brooks, said if necessary he and church members would picket outside the Best motel and any other establishment that houses what he described as “community killers.” And after coming down from the motel’s rooftop on Feb. 27 Brooks said he returned to his tent on the roof one last time before the building was torn down this week. “(I went back up) because I felt like I’d gotten away from the fundamental principles of just having patience, and meditating every day, and praying every day,” he added. The community activist, who is a husband and father of four, began his journey sleeping on the roof last November after several Black youth were murdered including one in front of his church. Originally, Brooks had planned on sleeping on the roof for 21 days but ended up staying for three moths. By doing so, Brooks was unable to spend Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day, Valen-

Meeks, who is also a Democratic state Senator, said more Black communities need community centers and he will do what he can to help Brooks bring one to his community. “I want to help him make this one of the best community centers on the South Side. He has the ambition and drive to do it and I am going to support him all the way until the end,” Meeks added.

Robert “Bob Lucas, housing rights advocate remembered By J. Coyden Palmer Legendary attorney and civil rights activist Robert “Bob” Lucas was laid to rest earlier this week after funeral services at Rainbow PUSH Coalition headquarters. Lucas, who led the Kenwood Oakland Community Organization for 30 years and was the leader in the fight for affordable housing, died last week at the age of 87. A World War II veteran, Lucas marched alongside
Robert “Bob” Lucas Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1966 through the then all-white community of Marquette Park as King was seeking to desegregate Chicago’s neighborhoods. Lucas led a march through Cicero based on the same principle. Born in Ronceverte, West Virginia, Lucas studied at the former Wilson Junior College and Roosevelt University. He moved to Chicago in search of better opportunities and never left because he fell in love with the city, according to his family. Lucas believed that everyone should have a safe and affordable place to lay
their heads at night, his family said and housing issues became his life’s work. Lucas became best known for his march through Cicero with 200 others in 1966. Cicero was then a middle-class, blue-collar white suburb. For two and a half hours Lucas led the protestors through the streets of Cicero that were lined with bottle-wielding residents who hurled insults and other objects upon the group. The protest ended in a near riot as protestors and residents clashed, eventually broken up by Illinois National Guardsmen. A friend of Mayor Harold Washington, Lucas was with the mayor in Washington’s last public event on the day he died. The two were joined by then Alderman Timothy Evans at a groundbreaking ceremony for a housing development on 45th and Woodlawn. After Washington’s death in 1987, Lucas continued to push forward on housing issues and even made an unsuccessful foray into politics. He challenged Black aldermen in 1998 by accusing them of being a “rubber stamp City Council” for former Mayor Richard J. Daley. His challenging of Black leaders and community members made him some foes in the community but also brought about changes. Lucas has been credited with bringing together the neighboring Kenwood and Oakland communities, which had been rivals. Their sharing of resources and political power make the Kenwood/Oakland area one of the most sought after in the city’s housing choices. Lucas was also concerned about
the city’s young people. In 1965 he led a protest downtown that stopped traffic as he challenged the school superintendent to desegregate the city’s schools. Recently he was a vocal opponent of the current administration’s agenda of closing schools and how resources were being allocated to schools in Black and Latino communities and challenged Mayor
Daley’s Renaissance 2010 plan. Known for his sometimes uncompromising personality and courage in taking on powerful entities, Lucas never became pacified even during his senior years. Although he died in his Beverly home, Lucas still loved the Kenwood/Oakland community and had concerns about the
gentrification of the area. Lucas wanted the area to maintain affordable housing even as more high-income families came into the community. Mr. Lucas is survived by his wife, Anna, and son, Lambert Lucas. He is buried at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.

Mo’ Money accused of targeting Blacks for tax scheme (Continued from page 1) “Without customers’ permission, this company filed annual tax returns riddled with errors and charged taxpayers exorbitant, undisclosed fees, but worst of all, it failed to provide consumers with their refund checks,” she said. “While the promise of fast cash may be tempting, these heavily marketed refund services always end up costing taxpayers much more in the end.” Officials with Mo’ Money Taxes did not return repeated Crusader phone calls seeking comment. According to Madigan, Mo’ Money used these programs to automatically deduct hundreds of dollars, in some cases as much as $700, in undisclosed fees before consumers ever received their refunds. For some Mo’ Money customers, who are unemployed like Serena Bowman, 28, not getting her income tax refund in a timely matter could create further hard-

Now, I am two months behind and facing eviction. If I do not get that check in the next month me and my kids will be homeless.” Unfortunately, Bowman is among a growing list of people waiting to receive their federal income tax refund. “Consumers have waited weeks to receive refund checks due to these alleged deceptive practices,” added Madigan. The suit also alleged Mo’ Money charged fees to file Illinois state tax returns but never completed the filings on taxpayers’ behalf. suggested. By waiting, Madigan said some filers could end up being audited by the IRS for receiving monies, such as Earn Income Credit, they were not eligible for. To stop future abuse Madigan is currently working with lawmakers to pass Senate Bill 3523 to crack down on the high costs and fees associated with refund anticipation products. The bill would also strengthen disclosure of fees and other costs to consumers, and it provides for additional protections for consumers who obtain refund anticipation loans from non-bank lenders, such as a payday lender. “Every year during tax season some tax preparers and lenders take advantage of low-income individuals by charging them exorbitant fees, on top of high interest rates, to get their refunds early,” said state Sen. Jacqueline Collins, D-16th District, the bill’s sponsor. “This legislation will cap interest rates, prohibit fees charged

EDITORIAL THE TRAYVON MARTIN MURDER During late February 2012, the lid was blasted off of the racial cauldron in America. Trayvon Martin, a seventeen-year-old unarmed African American with no criminal history, was shot to death by an overzealous “neighborhood watch volunteer” who was armed with a 9 mm handgun. The volunteer, George Zimmerman, claimed he was acting in “self-defense,” even though he took it upon himself to follow Trayvon, who had gone to a convenience store for tea and skittles. Zimmerman forced a confrontation, even though he was advised not to follow the youth by a 911 dispatcher. According to witnesses and the 911 tape, Trayvon was heard screaming until the sound of a gun blast cut it off. The shooter, Zimmerman, has not been arrested, and in a surprising, and potentially complicating move, he has sought the assistance of an African American to help defend him. Every year, a large number of African American males are killed by each other, and this has been going on for quite some time. Community activists and mourning relatives have been crying out for relief and justice, but for some reason, there has not been a major outcry, until now. It took a white man killing a Black youth to ignite the spark that may eventually lead to change. Trayvon was wearing a “hoodie” at the time he was shot down. This is why sympathizers from all over America, and elsewhere, are wearing hoodies in silent, and not so silent protest against the refusal of authorities in Sanford, Florida where the murder took place, to arrest Zimmerman. And do not be confused, it was murder. Anytime you have a grown man, allegedly weighing about 250 lbs, claiming “self-defense” against an allegedly 140 lb teenager in a confrontation that he caused, you know that something is fishy in Florida. Let’s reverse the circumstances for just a moment; what would have happened if Trayvon had been a neighborhood watch volunteer and decided to follow Zimmerman because he appeared to be acting suspiciously, ultimately killing him. No doubt, Trayvon would be so deep in shackles that you would hardly be able to see his body, if he even made it to the jailhouse alive! The Trayvon Martin case is one of the clearest gauges of the “flexibility” of the criminal justice system in America. One size does not definitely fit all when it comes to justice for Black Americans. All of this might be changing soon due, in part; to the prominent role that social networking has played in placing this debacle in the public’s eye. People are demanding that Zimmerman be arrested. In light of the circumstances, he should at least be brought into custody and questioned again. It is sad that it takes a killing of a Black teen by a white man to highlight the issue of the endangered Black male. Though this is the case, we must seize this opportunity to help change this terrible state of affairs. A luta continua...
The New York Times reports this week on the results of the Federal Reserve’s latest “stress tests,” periodic assessments implemented after the 2008 financial crisis to gauge banks’ preparedness for “severe economic conditions.” Concluding the third round of these tests, the Fed announced that “15 of the 19 largest financial firms had enough capital to withstand even a severe economic downturn.” For market anarchists, the notion of the Fed appraising the health of the most gargantuan Wall Street banks is amusing. Or at least it would be if it weren’t so unnerving. The essential role of the Fed, both within the banking sector and the economy more generally, is to insulate an oligopoly status quo, a small cabal of banks able to claim unfair tolls on economic activity. This state of affairs is what nineteenth century anarchist Benjamin Tucker called the “money monopoly.” That money monopoly saturates every defining aspect of the American capitalism passed off by its advocates as “free enterprise.” Legal tender laws enshrine otherwise worthless pieces of paper, arbitrarily proclaiming that

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The Fed: The Keeper of Monopoly Dear Editor:
they hold value and coercively excluding any alternative medium of exchange that might otherwise arise to serve the needs of a given community. Byzantine regulations and licensing laws not only dictate how many banks there can be within a given area, they decide what “the right size” for a bank is. Arguably the most decisive and distortive intervention of all, however, is the primary means through which the state creates and maintains an unassailable cartel in the financial services industry, the Federal Reserve System. In theory, central banks exist to impart a necessary flexibility to a country’s economic life, adjusting interest rates and ensuring liquidity in the event of dry spells. But the rationales offered in support of these government-chartered, though purportedly independent, banks are discernibly misaligned with the fruits that they bear in practical reality. In the Federal Reserve System, Wall Street finds its most perfect weapon against competition and productive society. As the earliest recipients of the Fed’s counterfeit monies, printed whenever the corporate-political class finds it expedient, the largest, most powerful banks quite literally benefit at the expense of the public at large. When printing vast sums of money into existence is no longer politically tenable, the Fed engages in a less obvious, yet no less harmful practice — purchasing
federal government bonds in quantities so immense as to overwhelm the mind. The entrenched banks too consume titanic levels of government debt, financing the growth of the total state on the estimation that treasuries are a “safe” investment, as the government is unlikely to default. Coupled with the cost barriers to market entry created through licensing certificates and regulations, the Fed enables the “too big (Continued on page 7)

BEYOND THE RHETORIC
Trayvon Martin Stress Test – We Failed By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist “Can’t we just get along?” Those famous words from Rodney King still apply to America today. It is 2012 and race based hate haunts us daily. There is always something sensational to remind us that we have yet to overcome this evil. The latest big indication that it still lives is the incident from Sanford, Florida. A child of God, a son and brother of only 17 years in age was struck in the chest by a bullet. The bullet did not come from a gang member, robber or thug. It came from a “volunteer neighborhood watchman” - whatever that is. Like the Watergate Incident which took down a US President, it wasn’t the initial act that causes us to scream. It was the cover up. What the authorities of Sanford did or did not do subsequent to the shooting is deplorable and leans towards racism. First, they showed no regard for the family of Trayvon. Here is a corpse of a teenager with his cell phone in his pocket. They made no attempt to locate his family
Harry C. Alford which could have been done in minutes via the cell phone. It wasn’t until his father called police that they informed the family. Secondly, they took the shooter’s word on what happened. Whenever a policeman shoots an individual his weapon is taken for testing; he is given a blood alcohol and drug test and then he is assigned to desk duty until a thorough investigation is completed. Sanford police took his weapon but did nothing else. In fact, they performed a drug test on Trayvon for some reason. There are a lot of things that don’t add up. Why was this watchman following Trayvon
who was walking directly home from a convenience store? The watchman’s 911 call sounds like someone drunk but yet they never test him. He weighs more than 100 pounds over Trayvon’s weight but yet he says Trayvon was beating him up. The police ignore the claims of Trayvon’s girlfriend who he called claiming a person was following him. They need to do a run on the shooter’s weapon to see if it has been used in other shootings. Why haven’t they begun a grand jury investigation? Why isn’t there an autopsy done on Trayvon? That might show the entry of the bullet and if he was shot lying on the ground as opposed to attacking the watchman. This is a pure tragedy but there is more to it than the great loss suffered by the Martin family. It is the reminder that Black young men are at risk whenever they intermingle in the same environment as policemen or guards. Emmett Till, Rodney King and now Trayvon Martin are just a few reminders that if you are a parent of a Black male, you have much to fear.
I have four Black daughters. Not one day ever occurred that I feared for their safety from police. I also have two sons, the babies, and there have been many times that my wife and I would seriously worry about their future and safety. The fear was justified. One of my sons was beaten by DC policemen and falsely charged. It took $20,000+ to get the false charges thrown out. The other son was given a false citation and harassed by a University of Maryland policeman which we also had to get thrown out. Their best friend escorted a white female student back to her dorm after a campus nightclub closed. The Prince Georges, Maryland police department declared this to be disturbing the peace (interracial walking after hours). For this they stayed in a jail cell from Friday night to Monday afternoon. His family had to also pay big bucks to get it thrown out. Just about every Black family I know with a son has similar horror stories. My wife and I are lucky. Our sons are grown now and have survived with their lives and no trumped up
criminal record. There are too many of us who cannot say that. It is an American shame and, somehow, we have got to end this institutional illness. Perhaps we can develop a protocol for all correctional administrators to adhere to. A check list that can be used as a requirement for all policemen, guards, etc. That will promote fair and impartial treatment for all regardless of race and/or ethnicity. The time to end stereotypes and prejudgment is long overdue. Perhaps we should no longer hope for it but sincerely demand it. Something stinks in Sanford, Fla. and we must expunge it from our society. May God bless the Martin family and may justice prevail in Sanford, Fla. All individuals who have failed should pay for their transgressions. May this become an example of what happens whenever fair and impartial treatment is not applied to each and every citizen. 12 Things to Remember about the Trayvon Martin Case By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist 1) Trayvon Martin was a 17year-old Miami student visiting Sanford, Fla., near Orlando, with his father when he was killed On Feb. 26. His father, who also lives in Miami, was visiting his girlfriend in Retreat at Twin Lakes, a gated townhouse community. 2) Trayvon had made a short trip to a nearby 7-Eleven store to pick up a bag of Skittles and a can of Arizona iced tea and was returning when he was stalked by Zimmerman. 3) George Zimmerman, whose father is White and mother is of Peruvian descent, fatally shot unarmed Trayvon in chest. 4) Zimmerman was an unregistered neighborhood watch captain who was not supposed to carry a weapon while on patrol. Chris Tutko, director of Neighborhood Watch for the National Sheriffs’ Association, told the Orlando Sentinel that Zimmerman had broken a couple of cardinal rules. “If you see something suspicious, you report it, you step aside and you let law enforcement do their job,” Tutko said. “This guy went way beyond the call of duty. At the least, he’s overzealous.” Tutko also The Chicago Crusader
George E. Curry said volunteers should never carry lethal weapons. He said, “There’s no reason to carry a gun.” 5) Though Zimmerman acknowledged killing Trayvon, he was questioned and then released. Police did not follow basic guidelines of homicide investigations such as testing him for drugs and alcohol, though they performed the tests on Trayvon. 6) Trayvon was talking on his cell phone to his girlfriend shortly before his death and reported being followed by a strange man in a vehicle.
7) A police dispatcher specifically told Zimmerman not to follow Trayvon, instructions he ignored. When Zimmerman confirmed he was following Trayvon, the dispatcher said, “OK, we don’t need you to do that.” Zimmerman continued anyway. 8) Benjamin Crump, the family’s lawyer, said that based on 911 tapes, Zimmerman harbored at least three stereotypes of Black males: “He said, No.1, he looked suspicious. No.2, he must be high. No. 3, he’s looking to break in some place.” 9) Some said that Trayvon became a suspect because he wore a hooded sweatshirt, known as a hoodie. Some have even blamed Trayvon’s death on his clothing. On the March 23 edition of Fox News’ Fox & Friends, network contributor Geraldo Rivera said, “I am urging the parents of Black and Latino youngsters particularly to not let their children go out wearing hoodies. I think the hoodie is as much responsible for Trayvon Martin’s death as George Zimmerman was.” However others, such as CNN’s Anderson Cooper, say they frequently adorn hoodies and have never been viewed as suspected criminals. And no one dare suspect New England Patriots Coach Bill Belichick or Facebook co-founder Mark Zucker-

berg, both known for wearing hoodies, of being criminals. Some kooks posting on Fox News Network site were extremely crass. One wrote, “GOOD SHOT ZIMMY. I’m just glad Zimmerman didn’t miss and hit an innocent bystander.” 10) Police say Zimmerman was not arrested because of Florida’s stand your ground law, a measure that gives broad protection to any citizen acting in self-defense. However, Jeb Bush, who as governor of Florida signed the stand your ground bill into law, said the legislation does not cover the neighborhood watch captain who shot Trayvon Martin to death. “This law does not apply to this particular circumstance,” Bush said after an education panel discussion at the University of Texas at Arlington. “Stand your ground means stand your ground. It doesn’t mean chase after somebody who’s turned their back.” 11) At 9 years old, Trayvon saved his father’s life. In an interview with Roland Martin on TV One, the elder Martin said: “At the time, he was 9 years old. We had just come from the Little League football park. We fell asleep while the stove was on. A grease fire started. I went into the kitchen to try to put the grease fire out. The grease splatSaturday, March 31, 2012
tered all over my leg. My body went into shock and by me and him being in the house, I started calling out his name. He finally woke up and, at 9 years old, he pulled me from out of the kitchen, where the kitchen cabinets were on fire. He pulled me out of the kitchen onto the balcony. His father, in an exclusive interview with NNPA publishers, said: “I can’t describe the feeling, I can’t describe what was going through my mind because I was actually staring at a photo of my pride and joy on the ground dead. I still see the photo now – his eyes weren’t closed all the way, his mouth wasn’t closed, it was the worst feeling of my life.” George E. Worrill’s World By Dr. Conrad W. Worrill
TEACHING THE TRUTH THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR (Dr. Conrad Worrill, National Chairman Emeritus of the National Black United Front (NBUF) located at 1809 East 71st Street, Suite 211, Chicago, Illinois, 60649, 773-493-0900, Fax# 773-493-9819, E-mail: nbufchic@sbcglobal.net, Web site: nbufront.org)
Dr. Conrad Worrill The movement to implement an appropriate African Centered Curriculum in predominately African in America inner city schools is critical to the on–going struggle for the liberation of African people in this country. We must continue to demand that the truth be taught throughout the school year. This movement has now become
popularly known as the African Centered Education Movement. Simple stated, it focuses on teaching the truth concerning the contributions of African people to the development of civilization in all subjects. During this new school year we must heighten the dialogue concerning the importance of this movement, particularly as it relates to the future of our children. Throughout the country, Africans in America have become more sensitive to challenging the racist and white supremacist basis of the African public school curriculum. Through the National Black United Front (NBUF) and its world African Centered Education Plan, more Africans in America are beginning to see the need for massive curriculum change in the public schools of this country and the youth must take leadership in this project. There is not a day that goes by that someone does not call my office seeking information and help on how to start the process of changing the curriculum in their school. Parents are becoming more and more dissatisfied with what their children are being taught. They are also beginning to realize how much isn’t taught. It is clear that the public school
system is the place where African America children receive a significant portion of their view of the world and the history of the world. And, it also is a place where large numbers of African in America youth are miseducated under the system of white supremacy through the ideas and interpretation of history that is presented to them. Let’s turn to Carter G. Woodson’s great book, The Mis-Education of the Negro to get some further insights into this problem. Woodson observes “the so–called modern education, with all its defects, however, does others so much more good than it does the Negro, because it has been worked out in conformity to the needs of those who have enslaved and oppressed weaker people.” For example, Woodson says, “The philosophy and ethics resulting from our educational system have justified slavery, peonage, segregation and lynching. The oppressor has the right to exploit, to handicap, and to kill the oppressed.” Continuing on Woodson explains that, “No systematic effort toward change had been possible for, taught the same economics, history, philosophy, literature and religion which have established
the present code of morals, the Negro’s mind has been brought under control of his oppressor.” Concluding on this point Woodson states, “The problem of holding the Negro down, therefore, is easily solved. When you control a man’s thinking you do not have to worry about his actions.” Therefore, it is inspiring to see so many of our people waking up all over America and seeking the truth concerning the real contributions of African people to the world. Through study groups, conferences, Black talk radio, information network exchanges, African Americans are coming into a new African consciousness that seeks to reclaim the African mind and spirit. Through the Portland Model Baseline Essays, the work of the Kemetic Institute, the Association for the Study of Classical African Civilizations (ASCAC), and other writings and curriculum materials, Africans are becoming much more aware of the following points that must be incorporated into the curriculum. 1. Africa is the home of early man. 2. Africa is the cradle of modern man. 3. Africa is the cradle of civiliza-
tion. 4. Africa once held a position as world teacher including the teacher for the western world. 5. There was and there still is a continental wide unity in Africa and in the African communities around the world. 6. The first time Africans left the continent was not on slave ships. 7. Africa and African people all over the world have been under siege for nearly 2000 years and only recently by European slavery and colonization. 8. There is an African Diaspora all over the world today. 9. African people have resisted domination on the continent and all over the world. 10. Even under slavery, colonization, segregation, apartheid, African people have made monumental contributions to arts, science and politics. These ten points, and others, have become the basis upon which we can judge the white supremacy public school curriculums content in textbooks and other learning materials. In other words, these points have become the basis of determining whether the truth is being taught in the public schools of this country. The Truth will set us all free!
WHAT HAPPENED TO AUDACITY?
BY JULIANNE MALVEAUX NNPA COLUMNIST
the situation they find themselves in. And we have been too tolerant of those who freely bandy about racial slurs. George Zimmerman apparently thought he could get away with a public execution. And, truth be told, to date he has. There has been no investigation, no arrest. All he had to say was that he acted in self-defense, and he was off scott free. No matter that the 911 operator told him not to pursue Trevon. No matter that there is no evidence of self-defense. Trayvon Martin is dead and George Zimmerman is free. Where is our audacity? George Zimmerman seems to think there are no consequences to executing a young Black man on the public streets. He seems to think so because African American audacity has just about disappeared. Facing an organized African American community, Zimmerman might have thought twice between raising his gun and using it. Fearing an organized Black community, Zimmerman
Forty years ago this month, ten thousand African Americans thronged to Gary, Indiana for the first National Black Political Convention. They gathered to develop a Black agenda, and to influence 1972 presidential politics. One of the things on the agenda was the development of an independent Black political party and to explore the notion of independent Black politics. To commemorate this anniversary, Dr. Ron Daniels convened a group of people on Capitol Hill to see the movie, Nation Time, and to listen to a group of people, some of whom had been at Gary, talk about what Gary means today. One of the things that was exciting about the film was the energy and audacity of the Black folk who were gathered at Gary. There is a young Jesse Jackson leading the chant, “What time is it? It’s nation time”. There is a
forceful Richard Hatcher, then mayor of Gary, explaining why the gathering was necessary. There is Imamu Baraka, calling for votes. There is Queen Mother Moore, speaking on the necessity for reparations. There is energy, audacity. All weekend, there have been rallies in support for Trayvon Martin and his family, demands that George Zimmerman, the
man who executed Trevon, be arrested, and demands that Florida’s vigilante laws be reviewed. Rev. Al Sharpton led some 30,000 people in a Florida rally, and the NAACP also plans a rally. As people rally to support Trayvon Martin and condemn Zimmerman, it is important to remember that this tragedy is one of several. Zimmerman, apparently, felt threatened by Skittles, iced tea, and a hoodie. How many other young Black men have been executed in similar circumstances? This Trevon Martin case may have a galvanizing effect on African American people. Still, we have to ask what has happened to the audacity that was so clearly present in Gary four decades ago. Since then, too many of us have become satisfied and complacent. Too many are into “me” not “we”. Even as African Americans continue to be battered by our economy, too many are blaming themselves, not our economic structure, for

might have thought twice before uttering a racial slur. No doubt, he has learned from the best. Rush Limbaugh pops off at the mouth any chance he gets, using racial and gender slurs and only recently suffering any consequences. Newt Gingrich calls President Obama a “food stamp president” and he is only mildly called on it. No wonder Zimmerman thought his effort was acceptable. Until now, he has had no evidence to the contrary. It is easy to say, “Black people need to be more organized”, but it is difficult to do. Still, the Trayvon Martin case reminds us of the need for an organized African American movement. And Gary reminds us that once there was audacity. We have to find that audacity again so that no racist on the loose ever again feels it acceptable to execute a child on the street. Florida got more lies than as the old saying goes “Carter got little liver pills.” First he was trying to set up the scene by talking about his suspicions, then Zimmerman was following the guy and I am sure he did not stop when the dispatcher at the police department told him not to follow Trayvon. as if Blacks are the only ones to wear hoodies. Then he claims that he was almost back to his car when he was attacked by Trayvon and he received a cut in the back of his head and a broken nose. Now he is in hiding and got some oreo on t-v talking about Zimmerman was (is) not a racist. A cheap way to get on television I would say. Now at least nine calls they say went out to the police department and someone could be heard on some of the calls calling for help. Now as if that was not enough someone leaked that Trayvon had been suspended from school for having an empty bag that was assumed to have contained at one time drugs. President Obama was outraged and spoke out about the young man’s death, to be criticized by the racists and bumbling idiots in the Republican party who would probably throw their mama’s to the wind for some face time on tv. Well, I know you probably know the story better than me, but can I tell you it is a wake-up call, a reminder that we must be vigilant in training our boys what to do if approached by a police officer or anyone. It is as real today that it is dangerous to “drive while Black,” “walk while Black” and definitely do not “run while Black.” Now the latest word is that the policeman investigating the shooting did not buy Zimmerman’s story, but was talked out of filing charges by a superior saying there was a lack of evidence. Well, Jesse, Al Sharpton and many of our leaders have been to Florida, demonstrating, marching and shouting about the injustice of this case. Even Congressman Bobby Rush donned his hoodie and was escorted from the halls of Congress, reiniscent of Black Panther days. Ima knows one thing that before the dust settles, there will be more to this story. It’s just a shame that a young man lost his life to get us stirred up and call out the hidden racists in this country. Trayvon’s family can rest assured that their son was a civil rights activist by default and a high price he paid for some of us to be spared in this racist country. RIP Trayvon!!
Gov. Pat Quinn, who to my recollection has done little if anything to help Black folk now has
decided he wants to be our overseer and tell us who our elected officials should be. A week ago, voters in the 10th House district decided that despite Representative Derrick Smith being arrest on a bribery charge, they wanted to return him to Springfield. When Mr. Smith was charged with taking $7,000 from an undercover FBI agent, a number of prominent Black elected officials said let all the facts become known before condemning him. Well, all of the facts still aren’t out. The state rep has been arraigned but there has been no trial so there has been no conviction. But Quinn and a few others, especially white politicians with no vested interested in the city or the West Side are calling for Smith to step down. I am glad that Smith is not cowering before those who believe they have a say in the matter. The only say should be that of the voters. Granted Smith put himself in an awkward position that even if he is innocent he appears to be guilty. However, even if he is guilty his constituents are saying ‘we can live with that.’ The main point remains though if we start letting governors and other state officials determine who does and does not represent our community in Springfield, we will end up with watereddown, non-urban, spineless appointed, not-elected officials. Quinn was elected by the majority of Illinois voters to address the growing state budget deficit, the underfunded pension funds, the rush of businesses out of the

In and of itself, the banks’ practice of issuing notes in excess of the amount safely deposited within their coffers is not necessary a problem. It becomes a problem, though, when the big banks are protected from the strains of genuine, open competition and given a privileged position in the saddle of the economic system. “Rich people,” wrote anarchist Ezra Heywood, “have been the subjects of charity long enough. Money covers a multitude of sins in which too many take stock.” Judged by its actions and their repercussions, the Federal Reserve System can’t be taken seriously as a physician performing a routine exam on Wall Street. The infirmity of American finance — its moral hazards and fundamental instabilities — are bound up with the Fed and with state coercion in general. True free markets, though yet unknown to the American economy, are the alternative, ready to rupture the oligopoly and actually serve the needs of consumers. David D’Amato

CHICAGO CULTURAL CENTER EXHIBITS: The Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington Street, opens stunning exhibitions in its Michigan Avenue Galleries this spring, in addition to the continuation of the blockbuster exhibition Morbid Curiosity: The Richard Harris Collection. Eric Holubow: In Decay —Stitching America’s Ruins, opens March 31 and continues through July 8, 2012 at Chicago Cultural Center, Michigan Avenue Galleries. (Opening Reception: Friday, April 13, 5:30 p.m. –7:30 p.m.). Photographer Eric Holubow’s subjects are architectural interiors of places man has forgotten, but time has not. His work tells stories of times past that play out in the viewer’s mind. Whether in the engine room at the former industrial behemoth Bethlehem Steel or the impressive view from the stage of the Uptown Theater, all of these cultural cornerstones now stand silent. Whether grand or commonplace, Holubow’s images share an inherent beauty that few recognize in a building’s final days. Holubow has chosen to capture these fleeting moments and reveal them to us, perhaps to act as a reminder of our own mortality. His highly detailed, ultra-wide-angle photographs are startling in their magnitude and explicitness. Morbid Curiosity: The Richard Harris Collection, continues through July 8, 2012 in the Chicago Cultural Center, Sidney R. Yates Gallery & 4th Floor Exhibit Hall. Morbid Curiosity: The Richard Harris Collection showcases Richard Harris’s collection of fine art, artifacts, massive installations and decorative objects, including creations by many of the greatest artists of our time, which explore the iconography of death across a variety of artistic, cultural and spiritual practices from 2000 B.C.E. to the present day. BUSINESS The high cost of higher education: More than $1 trillion in student debt Both Black parents and students borrow heavily to finance college By Charlene Crowell NNPA Columnist Whether beginning a career or seeking to keep one going, the competitive edge in today’s job market usually goes to those with college degrees. In our recovering economy with fewer jobs available than there are people who need them, there is strong motivation to earn degrees. But higher education also costs money – more than many household finances can afford. As a result, many Americans are counting on the potential benefits of higher incomes derived from strong academic credentials against the cost of going in to debt to fund that degree. The New York Federal Reserve determined that 37 million Americans now owe more in student debt than is owed on either car loans ($730B) or credit cards ($693B) nationwide. Further, according to Rohit Chopra, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s student loan ombudsman, outstanding student
loan debt hit the trillion dollar mark several months ago. In just one year, 2011, federal student loan volume totaled $117 billion. In a recent blog, Chopra said, “If current trends continue, there will be consequences not just for young people, but for all of us. Too much debt means too much risk for a generation of young people, many of whom are struggling in today’s economy.” Chopra is right. How America

Charlene Crowell Pays for College, a research report from Sallie Mae, the nation’s largest financial services company specializing in education found that parents’ income(s) and savings are being stretched as well. For the average American, 70 percent of college funding comes from three sources: grants and scholarships (33 percent); parent incomes and savings (30 percent); and parent borrowing (7 percent). Students invest in their own futures by a
combination of borrowing in their own names (15 percent) and working/saving (11 percent). The Sallie Mae report also found that the recent increase in grant usage occurred among middle and high-income families. Low-income families — with the least financial resources – actually paid more of their incomes and savings for college. Among Black families, 51 percent borrow for college costs and 35 percent of Black students take out loans in their own names to attend four-year institutions, both public and private. Instead of comparing curriculum choices or graduation rates to guide a choice of college, today the weightiest influence in selecting a college is the financial aid package offered. The value of a financial aid package, according to the Sallie Mae report, was the determining factor for 57 percent of Black students. Additionally, 52 percent of Black students live at home while studying to contain costs. Overall, students who graduate leave campuses with a degree in one hand and a stack of student debt in the other. The average amount of debt new undergraduates amass is $25,000. But for Black students receiving a bache-

lor’s degree from 2007-2008, 27 percent borrowed $30,500 or more. The highest student loan debt was most common among families with incomes between $30,000 and $59,999. As young graduates enter the workplace, student debt burdens will likely defer their ability to purchase a home, the traditional gateway to building personal wealth. For their parents, the additional debt of borrowing for their children will probably defer retirement and/or alter their standard of living. These devastating financial effects have attracted the attention of some Capitol Hill lawmakers as well. According to U.S. Rep. Hansen Clarke of Michigan, “Graduates are finding that their degrees, like homes at the height of the real estate bubble, were vastly mispriced assets that are now hard to finance. Yet, unlike the debt from a home bought in the boom years, it is impossible to walk away from the debt incurred by getting a degree. Student borrowers cannot discharge or even refinance their debts in bankruptcy, regardless of how desperate their situations become. We must set these students free.” (Continued on page 17)

Students demand healthier food choices On Friday, March 16 youth from Wendell Phillips high school and Wells Preparatory elementary school came together to protest the continued selling of unhealthy snacks to youth in the community at Vegas Food and Liquor (330 E. Pershing Rd.), located less than three blocks from Wendell Phillips Academy (244 E. Pershing Rd.). This is part of an ongoing effort led by the Bronzeville Alliance, a broad coalition of Bronzeville residents and organizations concerned with items purchased by youth before, during and after school hours and the lack of alternative healthier snack options. Youth leaders have conducted surveys of their peers to establish the demand for healthier snack options, and have discovered that if provided as an alternative, there is a market for snacks that are less fatty and without sugar substitutes,
such as high fructose corn syrup, which leads to health issues like diabetes, and childhood obesity. Corner Stores play a huge role in the problem of childhood obesity. Inspired by Michelle Obama’s recent visit to Chicago to address the problem of “Food Deserts” the Bronzeville Alliance has been taking action by inviting Corner Store owners to discuss ways to improve their product offerings, marketing campaigns and general relationship to the community. The need is urgent. Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years. The percentage of children aged 6-11 years in the United States who were obese increased from 7 percent in 1980 to nearly 20 percent in 2008. Similarly, the percentage of adolescents aged 12-19 years old that were obese increased from 5 percent to 18 percent over the same period.

More than 200 African American inner city students, ages 914, and their teachers and parents attended the event sponsored by the Institute for Positive Living’s Open Book Program. Answering questions, Hathaway told the Open Book participants, their teachers and parents: “The stories in the book are mostly fiction, but are based on people I met in the south. I was a city girl, but every summer visited the south and grandparents.” “I had no experience. I read books about writing and took a creative writing course—but you don’t have to go to [writing] school to become a writer.” A panel of judges including the author graded each performance on qualities ranging from enunciation to creativity and first, sec-

It had long been a dream of Maestro Nelson and the U.S. organization he co-founded, Soli Deo Gloria, to bring the same Bach cycle to Chicago audiences in a very special way—during Holy Week, in a sacred space. The birth of the Chicago Bach Project in 2011 launched Soli Deo Gloria’s annual cycle of presenting Bach’s great trilogy — the “St. Matthew Passion,” “St. John Passion” and Mass in B Minor — in rotation each year during Holy Week inspired by the tradition at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris where Nelson, led three such cycles of the Bach trilogy to great acclaim. Soli Deo Gloria (SDG) is a nonprofit international organization based in the Chicago suburbs dedicated to presenting and promoting traditional and contemporary sacred music at the highest level in the U.S. and abroad. SDG takes its name from the Latin phrase Bach inscribed on many of his compositions meaning “to God alone be the glory.” Beyond the goal of sharing the spiritual power of this great music, one of the goals of the Chicago Bach Project is to share these Bach masterpieces with a broad population, not just to the musical elite. Coordinating with schools of music and social organizations, the Chicago Bach Project’s long-term mission is to make this music available to the widest audience possible. The concert will be broadcast live again this year by WFMT 98.7 FM. Tickets are $40-$75 advance purchase; $10 additional at the door. SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING St. Titus One M. B. Church/CRPCI Sponsor #TeamStoptheViolence Basketball Tournament to conclude Saturday in West Pullman Community The St. Titus One M.B. Church, 12257 South Emerald, in conjunction with the Child’s Rights and Protection Consultancy, International (CRPCI) will host the last of its month long basketball tournaments on Saturday, March 31 at West Pullman Park, 401 West 123rd Street. Youth and young adults ages 10– 25 have come together to compete for trophies and prizes each Saturday during the hours of 1:30–4 p.m. “We are pleased to be able to provide a positive outlet for our youth in the West Pullman Community,” Reverend Michael A. Jones, I, pastor, St. Titus One M. B. Church said recently. The tournament enjoyed a record number of participants last Saturday (March 24) when 75 participants competed for the weekend prizes. According to organizers, there were 35 pre-teens (5th-8th grade); 25 teens (high school) and 15 young adults (1925 years old). Coordinators concerned about the violence experienced by the 19-25 year old age group express pleasure regarding the success of including this age group in this type of outreach program. “Young
adults are actually participants in the program,” Jones stated. “This is the most “high risk” age group and we wanted to provide them with a positive outlet as well.” “I think it’s a very positive initiative to help keep kids off the street and out of trouble while giving them something fun to do in a safe environment where they can enjoy themselves,” Marcus Jones, basketball coach, said. “It’s also great that there is no cost to the public so parents can feel free to come and support their children.” “I think its great that the church has provided us with this opportunity to play in a basketball tournament with other teens in West Pullman,” Casper Thurman, teen basketball player, stated. “I look forward to coming each Saturday.” “I was a part of the initial planning process and I’m happy to see it all come together,” Kentre Nixon, young adult basketball player, stated. “I hope next time we will be able to get even more young adults in West Pullman to participate.” Officials are coordinating efforts to develop a sports ministry that would include softball, football, bowling and golf activities in addition to the basketball program currently running. The ministry’s purpose would be to involve children in more positive activities. The success of the program has

NEWS Conceal carry proponents disavow Zimmerman shooting in Florida By J. Coyden Palmer As the nation focuses on the Trayvon Martin case in Florida, those who want to see Illinois pass conceal carry legislation do not want that case used as an example to not pass the legislation. Calling the Zimmerman shooting “a bad example” of responsible gun ownership, proponents of a law that would allow qualified Illinois citizens to carry a firearm on their person say the Florida man should have been arrested and fear he will be used as an excuse by lawmakers to kill a pending bill in Springfield. Gerald Vernon serves as the Chicago representative for Illinoiscarry.com. He is outraged at the actions of Zimmerman and does not want Zimmerman’s actions to scare lawmakers who are on the fence about passage of HB 5745. “The Zimmerman case is straight out murder,” Vernon began. “It doesn’t have anything to do with concealed carry. This is a clear cut case of straight out murder. This guy should not have even had a concealed carry permit. Anybody with or without a permit if they own a gun or they have access to a gun and want to commit a murder, there is really nothing that you can do to stop that unless you are armed yourself.” Zimmerman is claiming he shot the 17 year-old after the teen attacked him. But according to Sanford police officials and the recordings of a 911 tape that was released to the media, Zimmerman also admitted to following the young man after a 911 operator told him not to. Vernon said that alone makes Zimmerman’s self defense claim irrelevant. “This has nothing to do with self defense. This was just plain old racist murder with the police in that town essentially supporting what this guy did knowing there was no evidence to support a claim of self defense,” Vernon fumed. Rev. Kenneth Blanchard is a Maryland-based gun rights advocate and author of the book “Blackman with a Gun: A Responsible Gun Ownership Manual for African Americans.” Reached via phone earlier this week, he said the Martin case serves as a perfect example of what a responsible gun owner should not do. A former U.S. Marine and federal police officer who served on several international protective details for world dignitaries, Blanchard said had Zimmerman not had ties with the Sanford police he would have been arrested the night of the 16
shooting. He added an incident like this is something those who do not want conceal carry in Illinois will use in their campaign to justify a no vote. “They were waiting for a George Zimmerman so that way they can paint all gun owners like him,” Blanchard said. “If Zimmerman was a true student of the police sciences like it’s being reported in the media, his first response after he reported seeing a suspicious person should have been to stand down. Everything he did after that was wrong. He amplified things and made them go to a level they never should have. He was supposed to be a watcher not a doer.” Shawn Gowder serves as the vice president for the Chicago Firearms Safety Association, an African American organization
committed to educating Black communities in the Chicago area on the political, legal, educational, and training activities regarding gun owner’s rights. The group meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 700 E. Oakwood Blvd. The meetings begin at 7 p.m. Gowder contends that African Americans have been brainwashed into thinking that guns are a problem in our community when instead it is the culture of violence in general that is the problem. Calling the actions of Zimmerman, “disgusting,” Gowder said the case is giving his organization more resolve to get legislation passed in Illinois so people can protect themselves. “You’re talking about one person out of hundreds of thousands of concealed carry permit holders across this country that did some-

thing wrong,” Gowder said. “The Stand Your Ground law that this guy violated is actually a good law because it states that if someone is coming to you with a weapon and you have a gun, you don’t have to back away. You can stand there and defend yourself. But it does not allow you to chase someone down. I don’t know how anyone could rightfully compare what Zimmerman did to what happened here last weekend in Chicago where 60 people were shot in one weekend.” Illinois is still the only state in the country that does not have some form of a conceal carry law. The Illinois State Rifle Association led a group of thousands to Springfield earlier this month to lobby legislators into passing HB 5745, which last year failed by only a few votes. Those voting
against it were African American Chicago area democrats who have historically been against arming citizens. Vernon said he was disappointed with the results of last week’s primary election as those Black politicians who voted against concealed carry were all reelected with the exception of Connie Howard who chose not to run. Gowder however is optimistic that even with many of those who voted against the bill in the past coming back for another term, some may change their vote if they are pressured to do so by their constituents. He also found it ironic that the one Black state legislator who came out and said that Black children need to be taught about gun safety in school, Sen. Annazette Collins, lost her reelection bid.

Youth tired of being profiled based on their clothes (Con’t. from page 1) than one person. The Martin killing is a starting point for us to bring awareness to the extinction of Black youth,” asserted Trotter. “I do not want to keep turning on the TV news and hearing about another youth being shot dead on the South Side or West Side because of what they were wearing. I do not want to see drive past and see another youth arrested and questioned on the street by police because of what they are wearing.” More safe havens are needed for youth, said Tracy Sanders, 53, whose 18 year-old son was shot dead a month before his high school graduation in 2009.
“He almost made it. He was going to college out of state. That was what we decided would be best for him. Away from all the bad elements in our neighborhood,” said the Englewood resident. “There use to be a time when churches and schools were used as community centers and sponsored free, after school programs seven days a week. That option is gone for our youth along with job prospects.” And it is because so many senseless killings taking place in Chicago especially now that summer is upon us, that Corey Brooks Sr., pastor of New Beginnings Church on the South Side, is trying to build a $15 million community center at
6625 S. King Drive in the Woodlawn community. “The Woodlawn community needs jobs, after school programs for youth and economic development,” said Brooks. “I want our children to have a safe place besides home to go to after school.” In the end though, Heaven Smith, 15, said America has lost far too many youth who could have turned out to be the next Barack Obama. “President Obama is from Chicago and while he is not from the hood, he is a Black man who grew up struggling to make something of himself. He encountered racism, was picked on by society and

making it work, including fair compensation for teachers. We have serious reservations whether CPS will devote sufficient resources system-wide to maintain reasonable class size, educate the whole child, provide robust wraparound services, and provide quality facilities. But CPS makes its first good faith step in that direction today.” The settlement resolves the fate of the 13 schools. The agreement effectively guarantees those teachers the same salary for the 2011-12 school year that teachers will receive next
school year when the longer school day is implemented system-wide. Under the agreement, CPS will initially pay over $300,000 in prorated payments of up to $1,500 for each teacher employed at the 13 schools. CPS also has agreed that when the labor contract is concluded for the 2012-13 school year, these teachers will be paid the difference between this year’s compensation (including the $750 stipend and $1500 settlement) and next year’s negotiated salary. The effect will be that the salaries negotiated for next school year – when Mayor Rahm Emanuel imposes the
longer school day at all CPS schools – will be paid to the teachers at the 13 schools retroactively for this year. CTU represents 30,000 teachers and educational support personnel working in the Chicago Public Schools and, by extension, the students and families they serve. CTU, an affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers and the Illinois Federation of Teachers, is the third largest teachers local in the country and the largest local union in Illinois. Emergency teams at two Advocate hospitals prove
critical in saving life of Chicago police officer A Chicago police officer, who lost nearly three-quarters of his blood from a bullet that ripped into the left side of his chest, is alive today, thanks to the efforts of emergency teams at two hospitals within the Advocate Health Care system. Before being discharged this week from Advocate Christ Medical Center, the officer, Del Pearson, expressed gratitude to both the emergency team at Advocate Trinity Hospital on Chicago’s South Side where he was initially taken following the shooting and to the trauma team at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Ill., where he underwent fiveand-a-half hours of emergency surgery on March 19. “I want to thank Trinity for doing their best in preparing me and helping me make it to Christ Medical Center for trauma care, and I thank both surgeons who operated on me for what they did in saving my life. Everyone in the police department knows what an outstanding trauma center Christ Medical Center has; I was in good hands,” Pearson said. The bullet that entered Officer Pearson’s chest above his chest protector damaged an artery just
underneath his collarbone, causing extensive bleeding. Fellow officers first rushed him to nearby Trinity Hospital, 2320 E. 93rd St., Chicago, where he was given initial emergency treatment and prepared for immediate transport to the trauma center at Christ Medical Center, 4440 W. 95th St, Oak Lawn. Christ Medical Center provides Level I trauma services to residents of the south, southeast and southwest sides of Chicago and to the south and southwest suburbs and is one of four Level I trauma centers in the Advocate system. “Officer Pearson arrived at Trinity Hospital in critical condition with a very low blood pressure after losing most of his body’s blood supply at the scene,” said Brandon Watson, MD, the Trinity Emergency Department physician who provided care to Pearson. “The ED team acted quickly to stabilize the officer by placing him on a ventilator, inserting a chest tube and rapidly infusing blood and fluids via central line. With the assistance of a CPD (Chicago Police Department) escort he was quickly transported to Christ’s Trauma Center.” At Christ Medical Center, sur-

fessor of emergency medicine. "Our staff is not only experienced emergency department advanced practice nurses, they have the full back-up and support of the University of Illinois Hospital emergency department, which is just a phone call away," Orsay said. The clinic is equipped to retrieve electronic health records or establish new ones, connect patients with primary care providers, and share records for patients already in the UI network, Orsay said. The clinic will soon be connected to the UI Hospital emergency department, which will allow emergency physicians to consult via video link. "Many times you just need a quick look to resolve a question and save a trip to the emergency room," Orsay said. "We can offer comprehensive care at a far more affordable price than a visit to an emergency department." The Immediate Care Clinic at 722 W. Maxwell St., second floor, will be open Monday through Friday, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday, noon to 10 p.m.; closed major holidays. Adults and children ages 12 and older are welcome. Patients don't need an appointment. For more information call (312) 355-0517.
