Boyd family sues city over shooting death By J. Coyden Palmer The family of a woman shot and killed by an off-duty detective last month has filed a suit against the now identified officer and the city. The law firm of Cochran, Cherry, Givens, Smith & Montgomery announced the lawsuit on April 6 during a press conference with the family of Rekia Boyd. The wrongful death suit alleged that Detective Dante Servin maliciously and without cause killed Boyd as she and a group of friends were walking near Douglas Park around 1 a.m. on March 21. “Rekia Boyd was shot and killed on March 21, 2012, without any legal justification,” said the family’s attorney James Montgomery. “Her young life was snuffed out by an aggressive, intimidating police officer who provoked the confrontation and when met with a verbal rejoinder took the life of an innocent young woman.” The morning of the shooting police said Servin confronted the group because they were making too much noise. That is when police said Antonio Cross, 39, pulled a weapon on the detective, who from his unmarked vehicle, fired in the direction of the group striking Cross in the hand and

Boyd in the head. But several witnesses and Boyd’s attorney tell a different story of what happened. They said the group of five was out enjoying the unseasonably warm temperatures that night and walking down the street when Servin pulled up to them and began making comments about noise. Cross responded to the officer with a wisecrack that “they didn’t have any drugs for him,” according to Montgomery. That led to a verbal altercation between Cross and Servin and shortly thereafter Servin shot Cross and Boyd. A police unit in the vicinity heard the gunshots and responded immediately, police said. The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the incident. A spokesperson for the IPRA said they have already spoken with several witnesses and the evidence is being turned over to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office that will decide if charges should be filed. Mental fight to keep health clinic open By Wendell Hutson Residents living in the Woodlawn community on the South Side are fighting mad these days as an April 30 deadline to close a local, mental health clinic nears. And to demonstrate their frustration over the city’s decision to consolidate the Woodlawn Mental Health Clinic, 6337 S. Woodlawn Ave., into one of six other city mental clinics, residents have staged overnight protests outside and inside the clinic that resulted in some being arrested. But Alderman Willie Cochran, whose 20th ward includes the clinic, said the city has the money to keep not just the Woodlawn clinic open but five other clinics it is consolidating. “The city saved $15 million this winter by not having to do so much snow removal thanks to a mild winter in Chicago. Why can’t the city use that money to keep all six mental health clinics open?” he asked. “I have attempted to meet with the mayor about this but I have yet to have a one-onone meeting with him.” The Crusader also tried contacting Mayor Rahm Emanuel to ask him about Cochran’s proposal, but he was unavailable for comment, according to Tarrah Cooper, mayoral press secretary. There are 12 mental health clinics run by the city and by year-end there will only be six after the city completes its consolidation plan. The plan calls for clinics located at 4313 S. Ashland Ave., 1140 W. 79th St.,

1987 W. 111th St., 1607 W. Howard St., 2354 N. Milwaukee Ave., and 6337 S. Woodlawn Ave. to be consolidated. The remaining mental health clinics located at 641 W. 63rd St., 4314 S. Cottage Grove Ave., 200 E. 115th St., 1201 S. Campbell St., 4150 W. 55th St., and 5801 N. Pulaski Road, will remain open. Cochran joined about 100 residents at an April 14 rally across the street from the Woodlawn clinic to protest the consolidation, which is expected to save taxpayers $2.3 million a year, said Efrat Stein, a

spokesman for the city’s Department of Health. But not everyone agrees with the projected savings. “That’s a bunch of bull,” said Rose Brown, 67, a 28-year resident of Woodlawn. “All they want to do is reduce city services in the Black community and hope that we move to the suburbs so whites can move into the area.” About half of the protestors at last week’s rally were white and residents of Wood(Continued on page 2)

Organ transplants are hard to come by for Blacks By Wendell Hutson

should an organ donor match be found. Those on the national organ donor list must live within three hours from a specified hospital so if a match is found the recipient could get to the hospital quickly to receive the organ before it goes bad. Prior to becoming disabled Richard had worked as a stuntman in such movies as “Barbershop and Barbershop 2, Transformers and Baby Boy. No timetable has been given to Richard by his doctors on how long he could live without a transplant but he knows without one his life could be cut short. “I have never been married and I have no children and without a transplant I may never get to experience this,” confessed Richard. Pamela Carpenter, 56, is married with one adult son but can no longer travel with her husband because she is waiting to receive a double lung transplant and must now carry an oxygen tank with her. “It’s hard to travel with an oxygen tank even to a fine restaurant but I am making it,” said Carpenter, who lives in south suburban Richton Park but grew up in the Bronzeville community on the South Side. Another reason why transplants

nois last year totaled 644 but only 148 donors were Black. But the picture is much bleaker nationally. There are 113,740 people currently on the waiting list for transplants and of those, 33,377 are Black. And kidney transplants are most needed by whites and Blacks, according to the UNOS. Currently, there are 31,196 Blacks on the organ waiting list for a kidney and 35,087 whites. The second most sought after organ for Blacks is a liver with 1,188 currently waiting for one, compared to 11,201 whites waiting also. Dr. Mark Zucker, a cardiologist

at Barnabas Health Care Center in Livingston, N.J., said one reason why organ transplants are down is because of the age of potential donors. “Most people who die in the United States are over the age of 65 or 70 and in general we try to find donors in their 20s or 30s or younger,” he said. “We’re trying to find a young heart and that population of donors is smaller than you might think.” He added that while about 40 percent of Americans have signed their driver’s license to be a potential donor, not everyone is a potential candidate. Still, he encourages people to continue signing up to be an organ donor through the Secretary of State office. “I think the driver’s license signature is a critical component to this whole process of making sure that organs are available when organs are needed,” Zucker said. Dave Druker, a spokesman for Secretary of State Jesse White, said White seeks African American donors hard. “Secretary White makes a very aggressive approach to signing up organ donors, particularly in the African American community. He goes to churches every weekend to discuss organ donation and to discourage some of the myths about it,” Druker told the Crusader. “The most successful transplant situations occur when people are of the same ethnic or racial background. That is another reason why the Secretary encourages African American participation.” Regardless of the odds, Len Richard, 39, is hopeful he will receive a liver and kidney transplant soon. “I know the odds are stacked against me but I am prayerful God will find a donor for me,” he told the Crusader. “Some days are better than others but for the most part I try to stay positive about my future.” However, he said he does feel Blacks sometimes get the short end of the stick when it comes to organ donations. “Look at (actor) Larry Hagman (who is white). An organ donor was found quickly for him. But then again he is rich and famous,” Richard said. “But when (NFL Hall of Famer) Walter Payton needed a liver, no organ donor was found in time and he died. Walter had plenty of money but I guess that was not enough.” Hagman, 80, received a liver transplant in 1995 and most recently was diagnosed with cancer. In 2009 Richard moved to south suburban Matteson to live with his parents but more importantly to be near the hospital

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

According to one national program, organ donations have been slow over the last few years both nationally and in Illinois especially when it comes to Blacks. Officials with the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), a private, non-profit organization in Richmond, Va. that manages the nation’s organ transplant system for the federal government, said at the rate organ donations are going those recipients waiting for transplants could be waiting longer than expected. In Illinois, there were 28,535 transplants received in 2011 and 5,857 were Black. Also in 2011, there was a total of 14,148 donors but only 1,992 were Black. As of April 6, the last date data was available, there were 5,192 people waiting for transplants in Illinois and 2,100 are Black, according to the UNOS. As far as transplants received in 2011, there were 1,190 received and 338 of those recipients were Black. And actual organ donors in Illi-

The NFT is a non-profit organization in Memphis, Tenn. that helps transplant patients raise funds to pay for medical expenses, which could reach $1 million for a transplant.

ficials who support keeping the Woodlawn clinic open. U.S. Rep. Danny K. Davis, D7th District, is also a supporter. He attended last week’s rally even though the Woodlawn community is not part of his congressional district. “I support keeping mental, health clinics open. There are too many people who need these clinics especially in the Black community where mental disease runs high,” Davis told the Crusader. “If mental health clinics continue to be shrunk then I am afraid the prisons will swell since it already is the leading provider for mental health services.” The Woodlawn community is located in Democratic U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush’s first congressional district, who did not attend last week’s protest rally, but said he supports keeping the clinic open.

And as long as I am living here I am going to fight for what I believe this community needs.” However, city officials insist that the consolidations will offer better service to residents at a time when the city struggles to provide these services due to the economy. “Over 2,300 of our clients or 80 percent will continue to be served at the remaining (six) mental health centers. And about 600 clients with insurance will transfer to community mental health providers,” explained Stein. “These reforms will allow us to improve the services at the existing six clinics, by reducing wait times for patients and increasing the number of psychiatrists.” There are 95 employees who work at the city’s 12 mental clinics and 33 will be laid off as a result of the consolidation, Stein said. But it’s not just local, elected of-

Secret Service Agent talks about the danger to Obama with prostitution scandal By J. Coyden Palmer As the fallout continues from the scandal involving nearly a dozen U.S. Secret Service agents assigned to President Obama that were caught with prostitutes in Columbia last week, the first African American agent assigned to a White House detail explains how their actions put the President’s life in danger. Abraham Bolden, author of the book “The Echoes from Dealey Plaza,” wrote extensively about the misbehavior of agents during his time in the Secret Service from 1961 to 1964. According to Bolden, who was born in East St. Louis, he was asked personally by President John F. Kennedy if he wanted to be the first Negro agent to serve on the Presidential detail in 1961. Bolden said there is a culture within the Secret Service in which supervisors have turned a “blind eye” into dangerous behavior of some agents. From the living room of his home in Chicago, Bolden explained why the penetration of the most important layer in the President’s protection detail should be taken seriously by Americans and called for swift action against the agents who disregarded agency protocol. Bolden, who served on the protection detail for Presidents Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, said the advance team where all of the agents in the Columbia incident were assigned, has all of the intelligence on the President’s trip, including transportation routes, housing, how many agents are as-

signed and where they are placed, and anything else a person who would want to harm the President needs to know. “It was a serious threat and this was the most serious infraction of the rules of the Secret Service in regards to protecting the President that I can ever recall simply because it was the advance detail that was involved,” Bolden said. He explained that the advance team usually goes two to three weeks ahead of the president’s arrival depending on the place and the potential threat. In addition to transportation logistics, Bolden said the advance team also has important critical data on their person, including identification and weapons and they themselves need to remain anonymous. Because of the breach in security last week, Bolden said all of the previous security arrangements made for the Columbia trip had to be changed. “We learned in counter intelligence operations that prostitutes and alcohol is the first way of breaking into an intelligence operation and getting information from the enemy,” Bolden said. “It breaks down the inhibition of the individual you are in contact with. The alcohol also causes a person to become proud and boastful about things that he or she may not deem important at the time. For example, an agent who is drinking and consorting with a prostitute may be asked how many other agents are in town, which is valuable information for anyone who wants to harm the President. Any infor-

mation that comes from the advance team is supposed to be top secret.” The Secret Service announced earlier this week that all of the agents in the scandal have had their national security clearance revoked. Bolden said in addition to being debriefed by the CIA, FBI and National Security Administration, the agents should be fired and possibly face criminal charges depending on the severity of their behavior after the investigation is complete. Bolden said when most citizens think of the Secret Service they only think of men in dark suits and glasses talking into their wrists, but there are actually four layers of Secret Service protection. The first being the Protective Research Section whose responsibility is finding out the level of threats in the state, region or country in which the President is traveling. Second is the advance team where the Columbian breech occurred. The third layer is the local police force used mainly for crowd control. The fourth and final layer is the personal protection details, who serves as bodyguards and are seen mostly in the President’s presence. “If an organization wants to penetrate into your security, the best one to penetrate is the advance detail because they are the ones mapping out all of the plans,” Bolden said. “The information and plans made by the advance team are then passed down to the special agent in charge of the personal protection

Boyd family sues city over shooting death weapon Cross was allegedly carrying was never found, according to the IPRA and Montgomery. Cross has told several members of the press he was talking on the cell phone at the time of the shooting. Cross said his cell phone records will prove that. Montgomery said he believes the detective became angry when Cross “mouthed off ” at him and just fired. Family members are also upset with how quickly department spokespersons said the shooting was justified in the press the morning after. Police Union Spokesperson Pat Camden told several TV stations the morning after the detective’s version of the events stating, “the officer was confronted by a man with a gun.” Montgomery lambasted those comments during the press conference and said it paints a negative picture of his client. Police brass is no longer talking publicly about this case.

(Continued from page 1) “If there’s a problem with the case it’s being independently investigated,” said Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy. The Crusader has learned through records and those who live in the area that Servin lives in the 1500 block of South Albany, just a block from where the incident occurred. Neighbors who spoke with the Crusader over the past few weeks say the officer keeps to himself but has complained to them about the noise from the park. Many in the area are now scared of Servin seeing that with warm weather come more people hanging outside late at night. “I mean this is a large city and when it gets hot more people are outside later at night and yes people are often in the park or on the streets. But that’s no excuse for what this man supposedly did,” said one neighbor who lives on the same block as the officer and

did not want to be identified. “People liked that we have a cop living on the block, but now they’re not so sure about that.” Darian Boyd, the victim’s oldest brother said during the press conference witnesses told him the detective had been making disparaging remarks in the days before the shooting and thinks alcohol might play a role in this incident. “He basically said, ‘What do I have to do to get some peace, quiet and respect ... shoot someone?’” Boyd claims others have told him. Complicating matters even further is that Servin is either white or white Hispanic, according to Montgomery, while everyone in the group are African Americans. “I can’t even begin to describe the hurt, the pain and the feelings that we have right now,” said another brother, Martinez Sutton. “It’s unbearable.”

Abraham Bolden detail and many times the agents who are with the president have no idea where they are going because they are just following the plan. They only have one duty and that is if an emergency situation happens involving the President they are to protect him with their very life.” Bolden learned of the incident in Columbia as he was sitting at home and a friend called and told him to turn on the news. He said he was horrified when he learned what happened as it brought back memories of his time as an agent. Bolden said it brought back memories of the weeks before the assassination of President Kennedy in Dallas in 1963. In his book, Bolden writes about agents drinking while on duty, the bringing of unknown women into hotel rooms while traveling with the President, blatant disregard for agency protocol and how there was a colossal protection failure of the Secret Service on that November afternoon in Dallas. Bolden himself suffered from what happened in Dallas. In the wake of the Kennedy assassination, Bolden contacted the Warren Commission, hoping to testify about an alleged assassination plot in Chicago two weeks before Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. He traveled to Washington but before he could testify, Bolden was returned to Chicago where he was arrested on May 20, 1964 on federal charges that he had solicited a bribe from a coun-

terfeiting ring that ironically he had helped break. On numerous occasions he told his superiors in the Secret Service about the behavior of fellow agents in the weeks before Kennedy’s death and says nothing was done. Bolden said he was framed by rouge agents and spent over three years in a federal prison after his conviction during a second trial by an all-white jury. The first trial ended in a hung jury after the lone African American juror, Anna B. Hightower, refused to vote guilty, he writes in “The Echoes from Dealey Plaza.” Bolden is still trying to clear his conviction and there is a growing movement to have it expunged from his record or have him pardoned by President Obama. But Bolden said any attempts to have his record erased that will have him to have to admit any form of guilt is something he is not interested in. “It’s important to me to have my name exonerated but that presents a certain problem because one of the requirements is that you admit you committed the crime. I can not do that in good conscious,” said Bolden, with a look of defiance. “I wouldn’t even do that for an expungement. That would be an affront to me, the American people and my God. To testify a falsehood against oneself is one of the worst things one can do. And I sincerely believe that justice is going to be done in my case.”

OPINION

EDITORIAL WAR ON BLACK AMERICA The Trayvon Martin murder occurred on February 26, 2012, but it did not gain major momentum until late March. But Trayvon’s death was not the only one at the hands of self-appointed “keepers of the peace,” police officials and security guards, based on an article in the online blog Bronzecomm. According to a document researched, written and produced by Kali Akuno and Arlene Eisen working on behalf of the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, Black Left Unity Network, and US Human Rights Network, 28 Black people were killed by authority figures between January 1, 2012 and March 31, 2012. This comes to an average of about 9 (nine) per month! Furthermore, in major cities all over the United States, Black people are killing each other at alarming rates. Over the weekend of a major announcement in Chicago, Illinois, about the Trayvon Martin murder, the headlines of a newspaper blared “10 dead, 49 wounded in 46 shootings from 6 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.” Conspiracy theorists have been claiming for quite some time that there is a plan to decimate the Black community in America. Most people who consider themselves rational do not believe in this possibility. They cannot wrap their brains around the notion that someone, or someones, could be sitting and plotting the community’s demise. If we look at the facts, however, we might begin to think that something is up somewhere. Consider this: Black people make up about 13% of the American population, but are disproportionately represented in the criminal justice system (over 40%). There are more Black men in jails and prisons than there are in college. More and more Black children are being raised in foster care. Black Americans are also overrepresented among the unemployed, and American culture is becoming meaner by the day as evidenced by the fact that it is now becoming the fashion to only offer employment to people who are already working! This is a huge “catch 22.” Black Americans are also disproportionately represented among the casualties of the mortgage meltdown. And when you look at popular culture, Blacks are overrepresented among the buffoons, coons, murderers, thugs, and “beeatchy” women on TV and in movies. Rap music videos usually promote mayhem instead of love. In fact, the current hip hop trend was based on a foundation of popular “beefs” - Tupac vs. Biggie being one of the best examples of these. Our children idolize thugs whose main claim to fame is the ability to diss each other rhythmically. The conspiracy theorists, though largely ignored, seem to be onto something. In many places, Black communities are being destroyed, both from within by Black-on-Black crime and from without by others. In this regard, the “Stand your Ground,” laws, which have been adopted by a number of states, promise to wreak more havoc in these communities. It is time to wake up and realize that something very sinister is happening; that the Black community is under siege. And we cannot do anything about it until we admit that a really serious problem exists. A luta continua.

I really doubt that I am alone in hoping that the Chicago Teachers Union and the Chicago Board of Education can come to some agreements that will ensure the teachers don’t strike. Chicago doesn’t have a whole bunch of schools where the students are overachievers. That means we don’t have the luxury of allowing our children to miss school because there are no real teachers there. Conversely, it is imperative that the teachers, who for the most part are dedicated, not be slighted financially for the time and effort(s) they put in. Of course, there are some not-so-great teachers, but every profession has members who aren’t stars. I am not sure what third party can sit down with both sides and get them to see that although their points are valid, the priority must be our children-their students. I am sure though that we need someone in the middle who can help everyone come to some understanding short of a teachers’ strike. Even though it would be easy, and probably correct, to assign much of the blame for the teachers/administration problems to the new mayor, we must look be-

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR We need someone in the middle Dear Editor:

yond his educational ineptness and keep our children in school. Our boys and girls are already too far behind their peers who are in private and parochial schools, as responsible adults we must do something to ensure that that gap doesn’t widen. Too many young people don’t value education or its benefits; a strike of any length would send a message they are correct. The stakes are way too high for either side to feel they must “win.” I am sure there is some wiggle room that both parties can use to come to an agreement that makes sense, is fair and keeps our children in school. Can We Please Get Rid of McCarthy Now? To the Editor: The Chicago Police Department obviously takes city residents for fools. Every couple of months, Garry McCarthy, the police superintendent, tells us his department has a new crime fighting strategy. That is usually in response to something he told us earlier about another new crime fighting plan. The latest one was just an electronic version of what Cease Fire

does – identifying who is beefing and get some interrupters between them. In McCarthy’s case the interrupters are cops. It all sounds great on paper. It looked good on television when the Baltimore Police Department was shown using something called CompStat to identify the violence/gang hot spots. Unfortunately, the city streets are not limited to paper or computer monitors. And McCarthy (Continued on page 17)

BEYOND THE RHETORIC

More on the Poverty Industrial Complex In my last article, I wrote about the abuses of Section 3 of the HUD Act. The billions of dollars that are supposed to be used for job training and business development for people living under poverty are constantly being rerouted to the wealthy and greedy. This is just the tip of the “iceberg.” By the way, nearly 1,200 cities, counties and housing authorities do not comply with Section 3 nor will they even bother filling out their required annual reports. Many fill out the reports but are not in compliance (no recipient is in compliance as of this date) but this group defies even completing the form. It is total arrogance. To see this list of resisting recipients go to www.nationalbcc.org. Now let’s examine another vehicle of this Poverty Industrial Complex. This one falls under the federal agency known as Health and Human Services Department. HHS is a giant bastion for poverty assistance. Its annual budget approaches $100 billion. One of the many programs managed by this agency is the Office of Community Service (OCS). OCS funds billions of annual

Harry C. Alford dollars to states, counties, cities and other grant applicants in a fashion similar to that of Section 3. My first experience with this program was indeed shocking and disappointing. The majority of these dollars that are supposed to uplift people and get them out of poverty actually feed coffers of greedy operators and at the expense of those who are supposed to receive the benefits. Here’s my experience. It was 1991. Kay and I were living in her hometown of Indianapolis, Ind. We had just started the Hoosier Minority

Chamber of Commerce to address the Black business disparity of the city. One day I was driving down Indiana Ave. This neighborhood was targeted for gentrification (changing a Black neighborhood into a white one). I looked at a billboard sign that read: “Thanks to the Health and Human Services Agency and the Hoosier Minority Chamber of Commerce.” The Madame C.J. Walker Development Authority was thanking us for our support of a new office building. I was dumbfounded and called their office. I asked why were you thanking my association. The response was “just your general support of the community.” Actually they were trying to make this a Black thing, which it wasn’t. I then asked why was HHS involved in this. The response was: “they gave us an OCS grant.” I called HHS in Washington, D.C. and found the OCS department. I inquired about the recent grant given to the Madame C.J. Walker Development Authority. They told me it was a normal grant they give to create jobs for people who are long term unem-

ployed and living in poverty. I thought “great” but where are the jobs. Coincidentally, my dentist recently moved into the new office building. Through her I found out that the only Black employees in the whole building were her workers and none of them were new nor receiving some grant money for payroll. In fact, they pleaded with her to move her office into the building so that they could have one Black owned business in the place. They gave her 6 months of free rent for moving in. I went into full investigative mode. The office building was built to house the expansion of the School of Optometry for the campus of Indianapolis–Purdue University. Also, it housed the expanding office of a white run law firm with close ties to the governor of Indiana. Not one person of poverty and certainly not a Black found employment through the funding of this grant. I pressed the DC office of OCS and Senator Lugar’s office for aggressive involvement. That was a mistake. I finally pressed through the Freedom of Information Act to

receive a copy of the entire file on the OCS funding of the building. Their response: “Sorry but the file is apparently lost and we cannot supply you with anything.” At first, I took it as an insult but then I realized there was a message here. This was a common act of fraud and abuse of tax funded money. This racket was not going to get broken up by an inquisitive “trouble maker” like me. Thus, you better back off. I was beginning to learn how all of this “War on Poverty” was really a war on taxpayers and, in fact, an enhancer of poverty. The Poverty Industrial Complex feeds on poverty as it generates more and more grants to “address” the problem but actually feeds the problem to keep it going as the money coffers of the greedy get filled. When do we stop this sham and start creating real jobs for our people? Mr. Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce®. Website: www.nationalbcc.org. Curry NNPA Columnist Between the drama surrounding the arrest of George Zimmerman for the killing of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Fla. and the white terrorists who killed three Blacks and injured two others in Tulsa, you may have missed the news about CNN Anchor Don Lemon, an AfricanAmerican, defending journalists who use the n-word while reporting on hate crimes. In case you missed it, let me bring you up to date. The discussion about use of the nword grew out of reporting on a racial killing spree in Oklahoma. On Good Friday, Alvin L. Watts, 32, who is white, and Jacob C. England, who is 19 and describes himself as white, though he is a Native American, went on a random shooting spree, killing three innocent African-Americans and wounding two others. The day before, England posted on his Facebook page, “Today is two years that my dad has been gone, shot by a f—— n—–.” Of course, England did not mention that authorities determined that the Black man who shot his father was acting in self-defense. In discussing the case on The Chicago Crusader

George E. Curry CNN, Lemon argued that when used in proper context – such as referring to England’s rant – the actual n-word should be used in direct quotations. To substitute “n-word,” he contends, lessens the impact of the slur. “I think it takes the value out of what that word really means, especially when we are reporting it,” Lemon said. “And I don’t care what color the reporter is, I think someone should say, ‘That person calls someone nigger’ instead of saying the n-word because I think

it sanitizes it.” CNN correspondent Susan Candiotti did not sanitize the word the next day. After saying, “Please excuse the language, it’s very sensitive,” she quoted the Facebook post about England claiming that his father had been killed by a f—— n—–.” Anchorwoman Fredricka Whitfield said, “We apologize to our viewers for the profanities used.” It wasn’t just the vulgarity that merited an apology. And this wasn’t the first time a CNN correspondent had used the nword. Last month, CNN reporter Drew Griffin used it while reporting on Deryl Dedmon, a white Mississippian convicted of running down a Black man with his truck and killing him. Griffin said, “To be absolutely factual, at the end of this, Deryl Dedmond is laughing with his friends and actually called on his cell phone and, pardon my language, but there is no other way to say this, and said, ‘I just ran over that f—— n—–.’” Griffin used the actual words. Let’s indeed be absolutely factual. The n-word, according to Merriam-Webster, “ranks as perhaps the most offensive and inflammatory racial slur in English.” When we hear someone refer to the n-word, we understand exactly what they mean

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

and don’t need to hear the full word to realize the depth of the insult. Contrast Lemon’s argument for uttering the n-word with the controversy that surrounded New York Knicks sensation Jeremy Lin, who is of Taiwanese descent. The nation has been mesmerized by the exploits of Lin, who blossomed from benchwarmer to star for the Knicks. After the Knicks lost to the New Orleans Hornets 89-85 amid “Linsanity,” a writer for ESPN.com posted the headline, “Chink in the Armor.” The post was removed within 35 minutes and the offending journalist was fired. Also, ESPN anchor Max Bretos was given a 30-day suspension after asking, “Is there a chink in the armor, where can Lin improve his game?” ESPN did the right thing in disciplining insensitive journalists. Just as it was wrong to use a slur in connection with Lin, it is equally obnoxious to rationalize the use of the n-word. There is no “context” that warrants its use. Once you go there, the floodgates are open for every derogatory word used to insult women, gays, Jews and Polish immigrants, to name a few. In Saturday, April 21, 2012

one comment on CNN.com, a viewer applauded Lemon’s position on the n-word and urged him to start using the fword – he said the actual word – to describe homosexuals. In discussing the n-word, Lemon said, “I hate it in music. I hate those kinds of things. I hate it when it’s misogynistic and rap and all of that. But what I’m saying is in the reporting of a story, you should say the word not to sanitize it.” I don’t know of anyone other than Don Lemon who considers the n-word – even when not spelled out – sanitized. Instead of standing for Cable News Network, CNN should stand for Can Not (use) N—–. George E. Worrill’s World By Dr. Conrad W. Worrill

THE MAROON WITHIN US (Dr. Worrill, National Chairman Emeritus of the National Black United Front / NBUF, located at 1809 East 71st Street, Suite 211, Chicago, Illinois, 60649, 773-493-0900, Fax# 773-493-9819, E-mail: nbufchic@sbcglobal.net, Web site: nbufront.org)

Dr. Conrad Worrill Our distinguished ancestor, Dr. Asa G. Hilliard’s book, The Maroon Within Us, once again reminds us of a major problem that we, as African people in America, are besieged by. Dr. Hilliard described this problem as cultural surrender. In explaining the problem, Dr. Hilliard wrote, “African Americans remain one of the very few groups in the

United States who do not honor their own cultural traditions, sometimes even when they are honored by others.” Continuing on this point, Dr. Hilliard states that, “If there is a major illness among African American people it is that we unceasingly honor and utilize our culture less. All great nations and people do the opposite.” As Dr. Hilliard further explains, “Cultural surrender is more than a matter of rejecting one’s father and mother culture. It means that one accepts a new definition as a person. The culturally dependent person is a mere spectator, a receptacle for the creativities of others. To demand freedom from slavery only to use that freedom to commit one’s self to a voluntary cultural servitude is to lose the chance to be human.” The erosion of many of our African cultural traditions and foundations are most evidenced in our family and community life. Far too many African people in America are getting away from the essence of family life. The cultural tradition of African family life is that of the extended family that centers itself on the rearing of children and caring for the elders. Family life is the basis for which

a people maintain their cultural traditions, traditions that are important to the survival of a people. The way we raise our children in the context of extended family life for African people was always connected to the overall development of the larger community. Dr. Hilliard writes, “There have always been Africans or Black people in America who have been both physically and mentally free. We have also had far too many of those who have yielded their bodies— and worse, their souls— to people and systems whose purpose was to exploit to take all and give nothing.” It is in this context that Dr. Hilliard provides several reasons why this devastating trend of cultural surrender is taking place. He says, “…we have tended to accept certain false dichotomies,” such as the following: “1. We have tended to equate sophisticated technology with culture, believing that such technology is exclusively European and that to affirm African culture is to reject technology. 2. We have tended to equate modern with technology, and to value modern as if it were cultural progress. At the same time, we have seen the affirmation of

African/African American culture as a matter of retrogression. Further, we have seen African/African American culture as static rather than dynamic and adaptive. 3. We have tended to equate European culture with wealth and African/African American culture with poverty. 4. We have tended to associate education with the acquisition of all the cultural forms of Europeans, and find it hard to conceive of educated persons who live the African/African American culture. 5. We have tended to equate selfaffirmation with the hatred of others. 6. We have tended to equate religion with particular forms of European interpretations of Christianity and have not seen our people as religious or spiritual. 7. Generally we have failed to study ourselves and to know our culture.” The challenges that African people face in America, and throughout the world, as we enter the twenty-first-century is to create programs, strategies, and institutions that will reclaim and preserve our rich culture. One such program that has emerged as one approach to preserving our culture and traditions aimed at our youth is the growing

Rites of Passage Movement. This Movement seeks to place African and African people at the center of independently working with our young people. Children in Rites of Passage Programs are generally taught aspects of our history that included our literary accomplishments, our accomplishments in music, science and technology, and the spiritual concepts of African people that direct our moral and ethical behavior and treatment of others. As we look out and observe the African World Community, we can see a common set of problems that all African people face, as a result of hundreds of years of exploitation by Europeans and others against African people. This exploitation has developed into a worldwide system of white supremacy and white domination aimed at wiping out African culture. We must resist and refuse any efforts to wipe out our culture. Finally, Dr. Hilliard writes, “Cultural surrender or cultural destruction leads inevitably to the loss of any possibility for a group to mobilize on its behalf. There can be no African/African American family in the absence of a cultural base.”

Questions for Presidential Candidates By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist

fects from or two years worth of joblessness. TAXES – Former Republican candidate Herman Cain, he of the 9-9-9 plan that just didn’t add up, the foreign policy ignorance, and the fiery, if inept, blather said that Romney was being “picked apart” by the tax issue. But Romney pays a lower proportion of his income on taxes than the average – not upper income, just average – working person does, mostly because investment income is taxed at a lower rate than earnings. Romney has also called for an extension of the Bush tax cuts, while President Obama would eliminate them. I’d ask Mitt Romney why he thinks it is fair for the rich to pay proportionately less in taxes than middle income people. I’d ask him bluntly whether he thinks he favors the rich and if so, why. I’d ask him to detail his objections to the Buffett plan, and to offer an alternative plan for tax fairness. I’d ask President Obama (who not only pays his fair share in taxes, but also contributes generously to

Now that former Senator Rick Santorum has withdrawn from the Republican race for president, it is a foregone conclusion that former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney will be the Republican nominee. To be sure, he still has to deal with the nuisance factor of Newt Gingrich, whose lack of money has not only torpedoed his campaign, but also one of his “think” tanks. Maybe Gingrich can find work, as he suggested that inner city youth do, by taking on some janitorial tasks. So it’s down to Romney and President Obama as opponents in November. The entertainment is over. Let’s get down to business. Those who are undecided about the political path they’d like to take ought to look at several areas of contrast, and consider what either candidate might do in three areas: JOBS – The unemployment rate ticked down just a tiny bit last month, from 8.3 to 8.2 percent, but only 120,000 new jobs were

Julianne Malveaux created. We need to create at least 300,000 jobs a month for the next year or so to just begin to catch up with all the jobs that were lost. Black unemployment, at 14 percent, is at the Great Depression level of 25 percent when hidden unemployment is considered. Unemployment is trending down, if slowly, and the Obama administration has been quick to share these facts. Further, if President Obama had been able to pass job creation legislation at the end of

2011, the rate might have dropped even faster. My question to Mitt Romney would be how he plans to accelerate the pace of job creation and lower unemployment. I’d also ask him about high Black unemployment rates, and targeting. Finally, I’d ask him whether he still enjoys firing people and what message he thinks that sends to the least and the left out. I’d ask President Obama at least two of those three questions. I’d certainly ask what he would do to change the pace of job creation, what kind of legislation he thinks is needed for him to implement his plan, and whether he thinks he can pull a political consensus together to pass such legislation. I’d also ask him about Black unemployment and targeting, not to put him on the spot or to play the race card, but because this is an important question. Finally, I’d ask about a focus on youth unemployment, given the fact that young people who graduate from college and cannot find jobs have lifetime ef-

charitable causes (including the United Negro College Fund) to offer, beyond the Buffett plan, other keys to tax fairness. I’d ask him whether investment income should be taxed at an equal or higher rate than earnings. And I’d ask him what kind of coalition is needed to turn the Buffett plan into public policy. STUDENTS – While President Obama has vigorously defended Pell Grants, Romney would not only eliminate these grants but many other social programs. Furthermore, students pay more than 6 percent interest on federal loans, while some of the bailout banks paid less than 1 percent interest on their loans. If we believe that children are our future, why aren’t our future workers, students, more highly considered in the budget process? I’d ask Mitt Romney what his horizon is for U.S. prosperity and what role today’s students play in that prosperity. I’d ask him why he (Continued on page 7) The Chicago Crusader

WILL IT TAKE A WOMAN?? This week the voice of Alderman Leslie Hairston seems to be the only one brave enough to disagree with the “Little Emperor,” also known as Rahm Emanuel, as usual. All of the other Aldermen seems to have lockjaw and

the hand that feeds you, but everyone knows that the former corrupt cop is full of it any way. Ima never would have thought such a little short man could terrorize a whole city like Rahm has. It’s reminiscent of the first Daley only he smiled more. Rahm was well known to be a “cut-up” in Washington and he has employed his “down your throat” tactics here. Yep, it has taken a woman to speak up and oppose some of Rahm’s hairbrain ideas. Kudos to Alderman Hairston who has more “guts” than any of the men representing us. I hope we will not forget her courage when she needs our support. I hope Ima ain’t being silly to suggest such support. -ImaMAKE ‘EM PAY UP FRONT!!! Ima don’t see President Obammy spending much money, especially in the Black community in the election. Now the crazy Romney’s have been tapped to displace the President from the White House. I say crazy ‘cause whoever heard of anyone riding the dog on top of their car, although Mrs. Nutty Romney thought the answer to the reason for riding the dog on top of the car was that he had the “runs.” I sure would have hated to be in the car following theirs ‘cause who knows when the old gripe was going to kick in and the dog let loose? Ut, oh I got sidetracked just a bit. Raking in campaign funds by the bushel basket, several millions a month sure could do some good for needs in our community. He could start with buying Ima some new brogands and duds for the Memorial Day weekend, ‘cause Killer done promised to take me to Paris (Paris, Arkansas that is) where they have a hoedown right every year. I want to get one of ‘dem new outfits the yunguns are wearing these days. Rev. Al Davis and talking with Rev. Jesse Jackson, but Gator said he didn’t pay him for the table that he got on Thompson’s behalf and other services he performed. I guess Thompson could have “Pimp” in front of his name ‘cause Ima hears he didn’t pay for at least one of dem endorsements he received from one of the newspapers that he used to get favor in the Black community. The other one had a “Forum For Pay” which meant you could not participate unless you paid. I’m just sayin’ he was just using Black folks to get elected. He also made sure he exploited the “Daley” name. Some call it smart politics, others call it “slime.” You can pick your choice. The National Action Network (NAN) held its convention in D.C. last week and one of the speakers was Eric Holder, the Attorney General, among other folks connected to the White House and the Obama Administration. Dr. Boyce Watkins said CNN asked “Eric Holder’s Appearance with Al Sharpton, What Does it Mean.” Now I don’t know about you, but who is the Dummy asking this question? Even the mentally impaired knows that Rev. Al is the man with Obammy and his cohorts. He has been the substitute for Rev. Jesse Jackson every since Jesse made the “nut” quote. What amazes Ima is that Rev. Al done almost shook the title “Spy for the FBI.” There are still a few of us who remember. Is it just Ima or did we miss the publicity announcing the convention? Ima had wanted to be there, but we need more than a week to raise the bus fare and Motel 6 rent for a room. Well, for sure Rev. Al done been running like crazy, burying his mother, leading marches for Trayvon Martin and then the conventin. Whew!!! I’m getting tired just thinking about it. -Ima-

Don’t be Scammed by Unscrupulous Car Dealers By Charlene Crowell NNPA Columnist The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) convened a series of forums last year that explored abusive auto lending practices. The Center for Responsible Lending (CRL), a participant in those roundtables, has issued a new research report on deceitful practices that take advantage of unsuspecting customers. The report, Deal or No Deal: How Yo-Yo Scams Rig the Game against Car Buyers, shows that consumers with low-incomes and poor credit scores are the most likely target for these abuses. By preying upon consumers who are the least able to walk away from deals, the opportunity emerges to make more expensive loans and take consumers’ trade-in and/or down payment. This is the first national insight into the prevalence of yo-yo scams. This deceitful dealer practice begins when car dealers encourage would-be buyers to leave with a car before finance terms are finalized. With only a conditional sales agreement in place,

consumers are encouraged to accept spot delivery, taking the vehicle home. The unsuspecting consumer leaves with the car, trusting the dealer will finalize the terms discussed. For car dealers, spot delivery reduces the likelihood of the consumer shopping elsewhere for a better deal. Yet for consumers, this practice often leads to problems never anticipated. “Yo-yo scams occur when a

Charlene Crowell dealer leads a car buyer to believe financing is final,” says Center for Responsible Lending senior researcher Delvin Davis, author of the report. “The dealer lures the consumer back to the dealership, claims the financing fell through, and then pressures the consumer to agree to a new loan at a higher interest rate.” CRL’s study found that consumers who returned to these dealerships, were often pressured

to sign finance contracts with worse terms than those originally mentioned. The report also showed that consumers trying to walk away from the now-worse deal often faced threats of legal action, criminal charges of auto theft, loss of down payment or fees for mileage and wear and tear. Unfortunately for low-wage consumers with few available choices for financing, many still take the bad deal. When CRL examined the demographics of consumers experiencing yo-yo scams, once again communities of color were disproportionately harmed. After accounting for poor credit and low-incomes, Latino and African-American consumers were prey to yo-yo scams more than white Americans and consumers ages 25 years old or younger. According to CRL, the majority of consumers wind up with a second finance contract with a higher interest rate. Deal or No Deal is CRL’s follow-up to an earlier report that found yo-yo scam victims on average received an interest rate that was five percentage Saturday, April 21, 2012

points higher than what someone with the same risk level would normally pay. Until laws or regulation change the ways auto financing operates, it might be better for consumers to adjust how they actually shop for a new or used car. Just as consumers now shop for the best mortgage rate available, making a comparable comparison of available auto financing terms would remove third-party transactions that now benefit dealers instead of consumers. Beginning with a sober and objective figure for what is affordable will empower consumers. Secondly, if financing is settled before the search for a vehicle begins, consumers can give themselves negotiating power by offering dealers a cash transaction. In other words, consumers can choose to seize their purchasing power, rather than forfeit it to car dealers. Charlene Crowell is a communications manager with the Center for Responsible Lending. Dysfunctional Friends has been described as “a perceptive look at the complexities of friendship both expired and renewed.” The movie does feature sharp dialogue and ensemble acting, with NFL player Terrell Owens playing the boyfriend of Stacey Dash, which seems just an extension of the pair’s relationship on VH1’s Single Ladies. It seems in Dysfunctional Friends, as in the cable show, that their lines were measured and could as well have been phoned in. “Woman of Steele” By Glenn Reedus Former Cook County Board President Bobbie L. Steele laments the fact that too many stories of the lives of locally prominent African Americans are untold. She said she is especially sorry that the life of Harold Washington, Chicago’s first Black

mayor, was not chronicled, reported and published in detail. Steele has ensured that will not be the case with her historic ascent and tenure as the chief executive of the nation’s second largest county. Steele recently published “Woman of Steele: A Personal and Political Journal.” In her memoir, Steele recounts a

lifetime journey beginning with the one-room school, church in the Mississippi Delta to being the longest-serving president of the Cook County Board. In this account of her life, Steele successfully crafted a read that will surely please the history buff, the political junkie, women’s rights advocates, as well as lovers of African American success stories. No matter the circumstances, Steele demonstrates for readers that cooperation and coalition building trump narcissism and individuality every time. Throughout the book Steele demonstrates that a combination of mother wit can pave the road to success. She shares that when one goal is attained it is time to embark on the next one, and no matter how successful, when the

time comes to move on do just that. She was at the pinnacle of her political success and decided her time had come in that arena. She was re-elected but opted to leave on her terms only four months after being voted back into office. Steele’s life epitomizes Paul Robeson’s assessment that “poverty need not be a barrier to distinction” as her life began in the Mississippi Delta and today she can regale one with stories of meetings and encounters with the rich and powerful, as well as the fact that she is living history – having been the longest-serving (18 years) Cook County Board President. “Woman of Steele” also is a story of overcoming as she has had to deal with a fire that wiped out her family’s belongings, the death

of her husband Robert, as well as the sudden deaths of her political mentors and friends – Mayor Harold Washington and County Board President John H. Stroger. And the tome is replete with the wisdoms and lessons she picked up from her mentor and predecessor John Stroger. Steele also sends our nostalgia into overdrive with dozens of pictures of family members, friends and plenty of local luminaries. She’s crafted an easy-to-read format, as chapters are short with topics that flow seamlessly into one another. No one reading “Woman of Steele” will be able to say they’ve read something like this before or that is anything other than an invaluable historical lesson in life and politics.

According to Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office, CPS teachers will use ChiArts resources as a hub for arts-focused professional development and as a laboratory for developing innovation in arts instruction.”

At Malcolm X, the high school will also provide space for an array of arts organizations and performing arts groups expected to play a “major role in the design, delivery and exhibition of professional development services” for teachers, principals, teaching artists and other arts organizations, officials said. GBM celebrates seven-year anniversary Encouraged by a vision and a single instruction from God to establish a different kind of church, on March 27, 2005, Generational Blessings Family Worship Center (“GBM”) was born. In Old Testament scripture, God commands His people to annually memorialize significant inroads and share them for generations to come. As God’s vision for GBM to impact the world continues to magnificently unfold, GBM took time to remember and share their sentiments about founder Pastor Olivia Johnson during the church’s 7th Annual Founder’s Day on March 25, 2012. This year was significant to GBM because the number seven represents completion. Highlights of GBM’s journey

special tribute and healing prayer will be offered for those affected by breast cancer. “As we move forward into our eighth year, we endeavor to follow the heart of God, building and strengthening many more families spiritually, physically and economically,” said Pastor Johnson.

were presented by members and friends who shared some of their most memorable experiences from the past. Expressions in song, praise dance tributes, testimonies and heart-warming messages were shared by old members, new members, GBM youth, family and community partners. A testimony called “A Walking Miracle” was shared by Sister Ann Bobo, as she recounted a horrible car accident where others didn’t survive, but her daughter Tania (who also attended the celebration) was previously wheel-chair bound and was blessed by God to walk again, recovering from her life-threatening injuries after much prayer, several surgeries and extensive rehabilitation. Community partners with whom Generational Blessings has built great lasting relationships were also included on the pro-

gram. Through its community outreach, GBM has impacted the lives of many families within the community and established a relationship with Chicago Heights School District 170. It was in 2010 that Pastor Johnson was asked by the Principal of Washington Elementary School, Gretchen Sutherland, who was in attendance at the anniversary, to create an etiquette class. In 2011, with the support of positive African-American businessmen, Pastor Johnson established a male mentoring program for youth ages 11-14. At the invitation of the Chicago Bar Association’s Interfaith Committee, also in 2011, GBM became partners with the Chicago Bar Association, which is chaired by The Honorable Judge Thomas Hogan, one of the anniversary’s main speakers. As a member of the committee, Pastor Johnson helped to develop a program that teaches schoolaged children (grades 6-8) restorative justice, alternative approaches to resolve conflict peacefully, rather than through violence. After a successful launch in October 2011 at Washington School in Chicago Heights, and more recently at the LaSalle II Magnet School on Chicago’s North Side. “The eight-week restorative justice program continues to gain prominence and is being requested in schools throughout Chicago and surrounding suburbs,” says Pastor Johnson. And just this week, the committee’s newest program, Media Literacy, is being offered at a suburban school. A woman of God with a heart to give, Pastor Johnson shared her day with others, as she took the opportunity to bless unsuspecting congregants with spa gift cer-

“Diabetic neuropathy - common disease that can not be ignored” Part One By Dr. Galina Podolskiy I want to begin with a general description of such diseases as diabetes, and those problems that it causes. Compared to the general population, African Americans are disproportionately affected by diabetes: 3.7 million, or 14.7 percent of all African Americans aged 20 years or older have diabetes. African Americans are 1.8 times more likely to have diabetes as non Hispanic whites. 25 percent of African Americans between the ages of 65 and 74 have diabetes. 1 in 4 African American women over 55 years of age has diabetes. In addition, they are more likely to suffer complications from diabetes, such as end-stage renal disease and lower extremity amputations! Also you just might inherit the disease. If you have diabetes you are more likely to have foot problems. Diabetes can damage your nerves. This, in turn, may make you less able to feel an injury or pressure on the skin of your foot. You may not notice a foot injury until severe damage or infection develops. Diabetes changes your body’s ability to fight infections. Damage to blood vessels because of diabetes results in less blood and oxygen getting to your feet. Because of this, small sores or breaks in the skin may become deeper skin ulcers. The affected limb may need to be amputated if these skin ulcers do not improve, get larger, or go deeper into the skin. If you have diabetes, you should: Improve control of your blood sugar Stop smoking Get a foot exam at least once a year and learn whether you have nerve damage. Check and care for your feet every day, especially if you already have known nerve or blood vessel damage or current foot problems. Follow the instructions below.

Do not put lotion between your toes if you have sores there. If your toenails are not trimmed correctly, you may get a foot sore or ulcer. Soak your feet in lukewarm water to soften your nails before trimming. Cut the nail straight across, because curved nails are more likely to become ingrown. The most serious crime – murder – is up by 60 percent in the first three months of this year, compared to the first three months of 2011. There were 75 homicides in the January-March period in 2011, and 120 in the first three months of this year. McCarthy came out of Newark, New Jersey, a community much smaller and slower than Chicago. Chicago mayors need to stop importing police bosses and find home grown talent – preferably within the department. There is too much history, history of interactions – good and bad - and geographic quirks. That takes a lot of time to understand for someone not accustomed to living in the city compared to someone who grew up here. The violence situation, whether we are talking muggings or murder, needs to be addressed immediately. While someone like McCarthy studies the problem it escalates. There is little doubt in my mind that someone who has risen through the ranks would have a much better idea of how to curb the situation.
