Secretary of State wants state senator to resign By Wendell Hutson The state’s highest elected Black official is calling on one state senator whose district covers portions of the West Side to resign due to what he described as unethical behavior. White, who is also the Democratic committeeman for the 27th ward on the West Side, told the Crusader that state Sen. Annazette Collins, D-5th District, should consider resigning. “Short of her explaining in detail to her constituents what is really going on she needs to step down immediately,” Secretary of State Jesse White said. “I am embarrassed to have been a part of a committee that selected her last year to replace (former state Senator) Rickey Hendon in the Senate and I am deeply disappointed in her actions since taking office.” But after comparing her alleged, unethical behavior to that of former Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who was impeached and later

convicted in federal court for corruption, on Tuesday during a morning appearance on WGN-TV White softened his words. “I might have been able to soften my statement about her,” he said. Collins had threatened to sue White for slander if he did not publically apologize, by Tuesday. And had she did White said he, not the taxpayers, would have covered the expense of a legal battle. For now, Collins said she is ready to move forward. “He went on TV and issued some sort of apology for comparing me to Rod Blagojevich and now I am ready to move on and continue working for the people in my district,” she said. But White, who has endorsed community activist and former mayoral candidate Patricia Van Pelt Watkins over Collins in the March 20 primary, said there are too many “questionable incidents” that have occurred for him not to be suspicious of Collins.

Portion of I-57 renamed to honor Tuskegee Airmen By J. Coyden Palmer Governor Patrick Quinn along with state Sen. Kwame Raoul and Rep. Marlow Colvin was present in suburban Markham Monday afternoon for a ceremony to rename a portion of Interstate 57 the Tuskegee Airmen Memorial Trail. The airmen were the first African American pilots in the U.S. military during World War II. The renaming of the expressway portion from 99th street in Chicago to Sauk Trail

in Richton Park is a way to honor the men for their service and serve as a reminder to how far race relations have come in the United States, stated Quinn. For members of the distinguished group, they say they were not just fighting a war against a foreign enemy, but fighting for the rights of African Americans back home during a time of segregation. “It would have been against the law for us to be together like this back in the day,” said Bev Dunjill, president emeritus of Tuskegee Airmen Inc.’s Chicago chapter. “I think today is a great example of showing our young people what sacrifice and commitment is all about and remind us of a time long ago where racial equality and tolerance was a war in itself.” The ceremony, held at City Hall in Markham, also included nine living Tuskegee Airmen and four of their widows. The 332nd Fighter Group and the 447th Bombardment Group of the U.S. Army Air Corps as it was called at the time, made up the Tuskegee Airmen, who were trained in Alabama at the insistence of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Serving as escorts to U.S. bombers, the group is noted for their high success rate on their missions despite the doubts from many within the military who wanted to deny them the op(Continued on page 2)

Crusader introduces Tech Talk As the Internet ages, many minority populations as well as lower income people across the country are limited in terms of access and availability. This is commonly known as the “digital divide.” And even for those who do have access, some of the capabilities of the Internet remain a mystery. The Crusader is working to raise the level of understanding by introducing our exclusive “Tech Talk” column. The column, written by Roosevelt University professor, Billy Montgomery, will explain how all aspects of the Internet work and how you can increase your online understanding and appreciation. Congressman credits his success to his wife By Wendell Hutson For the past 17 years U.S. Representative Jesse Jackson Jr., (D2nd) has been repeatedly re-elected to Congress and credits much of his political success to his wife of 25 years Alderman Sandi Jackson. “It is a love affair that has last almost three decades,” Jackson passionately said. “She is my backbone and without her I know I could not have made it this far and have accomplished all that I have thus far.” However, Sandi said her husband gives her too much credit. “My husband is the most amazing man I have ever known,” she told the Crusader. “We both want what is best for the second district and that’s why we work well together professionally. As far as personally, we work even better. We have two, beautiful children and despite all the negative things that have been directed at us over

not negativity,” said Sandi, who represents the seventh ward on the Southeast Side. Pushing aside rumors of him once having an affair Jackson stood in unity at a Monday news conference with a group of clergy who gathered to publically endorse his re-election campaign. The primary is March 20 and some polls show Jackson with just a slight lead over his main opponent, former Congresswoman Debbie Halvorson. The coalition of 50 clergy made up of Blacks, whites and Jews gathered at the Park 52 Restaurant in Hyde Park to express their desire to help Jackson stay in office. “We are here because we will not allow anyone to choose our leaders,” said Rev. Walter Turner, pastor of New Spiritual Light M.B. Church on the South Side. “He (Congressman Jackson) has unfinished business and until that business is complete we must give

tion,” Halvorson said. “What’s he afraid of, the truth? He should debate me so the voters can see where we stand when placed next to one another.” Despite what Halvorson and other critics are saying about Jackson, Rev. Charles Jenkins, pastor of Fellowship M.B. Church on the South Side, said the congressman has his full support. “He has demonstrated that he is a champion for victory,” Jenkins said to a standing room only audience. If re-elected Jackson said he will continue to fight for a third Chicago-area airport and other projects that would yield jobs to his district. He also is seeking historic status for the Pullman Park on the far South Side. Jackson introduced a bill in Congress that would authorized the U.S. Department of Interior to study the possibility of conferring the historic status, placing the site under the National Park Service, just like President Abraham Lincoln’s home in downstate Springfield.

Nicknamed “Red Tails,” because of the bright red paint on the tails of their P-47 and Mustang P-51 aircrafts, the airmen gained the respect of not just the enemy but their fellow white pilots. “I’m honored to be in the presence of greatness,” said Gov. Quinn, as he pointed to the pilots sitting in the front row with applauses of approval. “It is very important to recognize our men and women who sacrificed so much to defend our rights. Their service to our country will always be remembered. We honor you today and will honor you everyday.” Quinn noted the Tuskegee Airmen earned 900 citations, which included 150 Distinguished Flying Crosses, eight Purple Hearts, 14 Bronze Stars and 744 Air Medals. He said the story of the airmen being told by Hollywood with the release last month of the movie “Red Tails” is just a portion of the story of greatness. He said harsh treatment the airmen received not just from the military but from their communities is a time in America that we can never go back to. Quinn said inclusion and opportunity are still the fabric of the country and Illinois is proud to recognize the achievements of great Americans from all races. “Without these men I wouldn’t

Raoul who sponsored the resolution in the Senate. “Not only myself, but the guy who held this office in my district before me would not have the success he is currently having if it wasn’t for people like the men we are honoring today,” said Raoul, speaking about President Barack Obama. Ken Rapier, president of Chicago “DoDo” Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen, said they have been on a quest to make sure there is some permanency about the Tuskegee Airmen legacy. He said it is being done in three phases with the expressway renaming only being the second phase. The group started by getting the Tuskegee Airmen inducted into the Illinois Aviation Hall of Fame in May of last year. Now they are working

with officials from the U.S. Postal Service to get a Tuskegee Airmen stamp. Rapier said he is optimistic it can be accomplished within the next year. Signage for the expressway is expected to be completed by the end of this week said a spokesperson for the Illinois Department of Transportation. There are plans for two signs, one as you merge onto I-57 from the Dan Ryan going southbound and another one near Sauk Trail Road for those driving north on I-57 from Will County. Also participating in the ceremony on Monday was the JROTC from Bloom Trail High School. Many of the cadets said they were honored to meet the military veterans as some are planning on military careers themselves. The Chicago Crusader

Teachers union partners with parents to stop CPS By Wendell Hutson The Chicago Teachers Union is no stranger to opposing school changes proposed by Chicago Public Schools. But now it has aligned itself with parents and community groups to stop the latest school changes proposed by the nation’s third largest school district. The Chicago Board of Education is expected to vote this week on whether to accept, reject or amend changes proposed by CPS administration, which includes school closings and using its popular “turnaround” method to improve poor performing schools. The proposed changes call for seven school closures and 10 schools to be turned around, a method by which up to 80 percent of the staff including the principal and security guards are replaced. At Crusader press time, a decision by the school board, who met Feb. 22, had not yet been made. In an effort to stop these changes from going into effect this fall Local School Council members including four, Black

teachers filed a lawsuit Feb. 9 against the school board and Jean-Claude Brizard, chief education officer for Chicago Public Schools. The CTU assisted the group in filing their lawsuit. “The Board of Education refuses to involve local school councils in the probation process at schools who have a majority Black student population,” explained Thomas Geoghegan, an attorney representing the plaintiffs in the lawsuit. “(Basically) the board wants to remove LSCs from controlling neighborhood schools.” No court date has been set yet and Geoghegan said he doubts if the suit would postpone the board voting this week. “(That’s why) we’re seeking injunctive relief from these actions, not the vote,” he added. About the only thing the proposed changes would do if approved, said Janice Beckham, a school council member at Guggenheim Elementary School on the South Side and a plaintiff in the lawsuit, is disrupt the way children are taught. “It is appalling how every two years or every year our school is

disrupted by the idea that they’re going to close our schools,” she said. “Responsibility starts at the top, not at the bottom. You are responsible, board of education, for what is happening in our schools.” However, Brizard downplayed the lawsuit calling it “baseless” and said CPS is hopeful the board would approve its recommendations. And last week Brizard’s prediction that the school board would approve its recommendations gained momentum with a ruling by the Illinois Supreme Court. The Supreme Court upheld CPS’ 2010 decision to lay off over 1,000 teachers, many who were tenured, due to budget constraints. By allowing principals to use their discretion to hire teachers and not be mandated to rehire laid off, tenured teachers makes things more efficient, said Becky Carroll, chief communications director for CPS. “In a historically significant decision for CPS, the Illinois Supreme Court upheld school reforms that empower principals to make hiring decisions that are in

Secretary of State wants state senator to resign (Continued from page 1) Elections,” White said. But Collins denied making such an arrangement with Goldman. However, records from the Illinois Board of Elections showed that Goldman has been receiving payments from “Friends of Annazette R. Collins” since 2011. The last payment posted was on Jan. 21, 2012 for $5,500. And in an exclusive interview with the Crusader Goldman

that she was spending campaign money that went against state rules,” recalled Goldman. “I filed a complaint with the state Board of Elections who in turn determined that my complaint had merit and that a public hearing could take place. By this time I had ran up $20,000 in campaign debt. So in return for dropping my complaint I agreed to accept $15,000 in campaign contributions (which is now all paid up).” Another issue White has with

Collins denies admitting in court she lived on the South Side or applying for the tax exemption, which she did admit to receiving. “In 1999 after a divorce I bought some property on the South Side and at one time my mother had lived in it after I moved to the West Side,” she said. “And somehow I received the exemption even though I never applied for one. Last year when I realized that I had been given the exemption I repaid $2,300 back.” She said somehow the exemption must have gotten confused with three other properties she owns including her primary residence on the West Side. And White confirmed that the address listed on her driver’s license is within her West Side Senate district. Other allegations by White include Collins handing out taxpayer-funded college scholarships to students who do not live in her district when she was a West Side state Representative from 2001 to 2011. Collins said that too is not true. “Every scholarship I awarded was to a student who lived in my district. I do know that students move from time to time so maybe that is what happened,” she said. “I have moved four times myself so I know it is possible for students to move. At one time

spelled out the terms of his agreement with Collins. “I received the final payment last week for $2,000, which should post this week on the state’s website,” explained Goldman. “When I ran against her I discovered through my research

With this decision we look forward to working in partnership with our school leaders and teachers to focus our energy on ensuring every student is successful and graduates prepared for college and career.” CTU President Karen Lewis said many of the laidoff, tenured teachers were Black and added while she hopes the school board postpone its vote, she will not be surprised if they do not. “Although we don’t control the policies, curriculum or purse strings, educators must be in the forefront of developing education policy not politicians and venture capitalists,” explained Lewis. “Parents, teachers, paraprofessionals and community leaders can no longer afford to wait for the Chicago Board of Education to give us educational justice.” Carroll disagrees. “CPS is breaking away from a status quo that has failed our stu-

dents year after year. What has been tried in the past has not worked and going back to the same failed policies is not in the best interest of our students,” added Carroll. Jintu Brown, a LSC member and a spokesman for the Kenwood-Oakland Community Organization on the South Side, said Mayor Rahm Emanuel has been silent on the matter. So on Monday about 500 protesters marched outside the mayor’s North Side home. “What CPS is doing is having a negative impact on schools in Black and Hispanic communities,” said Brown, also a plaintiff in the suit. “That’s why we filed this lawsuit. People are fed up. The hope is that the mayor understands that his constituents are serious.” A group of angry parents last weekend staged a sit-in at Piccolo Elementary School on the North Side to protest school closures and turnarounds. And as a result, Jesse Ruiz, vice president of the Chicago Board of Education, agreed to meet with those parents this week.

White and I lived in the same building so he should know people move.” At Crusader press time, the Illinois State Board of Education could not verify if Collins had awarded scholarships to students outside her district. Gov. Pat Quinn said he wants to abolish the scholarship program because it is being abused by lawmakers, who he said often award scholarships to children of donors or political friends. According to Collins, on more than one occasion White has

called her to recommend a student for a scholarship. White denied making numerous requests but did acknowledge asking her once. And even though White no longer supports Collins politically, U.S. Rep. Danny K. Davis, D7th District, does.

EDITORIAL WHITNEY HOUSTON GONE TOO SOON Whitney Elizabeth Houston, one of the best singers of our time, passed away on February 11, 2012. Whitney came from entertainment royalty - her mom is the consummate gospel star, Cissy Houston, and her cousin is the venerable Dionne Warwick. Moreover, her godmother is the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. It is no secret that Whitney battled the demon of drugs for many years. The reality show, "Being Bobby Brown," served to highlight the issues that they both had in this regard. Though the show seemed to boost Bobby's career, it depicted Whitney on a definite decline. Whatever pedestal that she was on before the show was yanked from beneath her afterwards. The reports of the cause of her death are still being researched, but preliminary information seems to point to interactions between legal prescription drugs. She was found face down in a bathtub under water with no illegal drugs in sight. According to Clive Davis, her mentor, she was said to be clean, had stopped smoking, was exercising, and was looking forward to being where she wanted to be health wise and spiritually in August. Unfortunately, Whitney did not make it. Whitney Houston is one of three recent major stars whose battles with the demon of drugs may have ultimately contributed to their demise. First we had the "King of Pop," Michael Jackson, who apparently abused prescription drugs. Etta James, the great singer who met her demise in late January, also had battled a drug problem in the past. And now Whitney. Drugs are no respecter of persons. They can destroy everyone from the rich and world famous all the way to the average "Joe and Jane" in the streets. It robs people of their humanity, their livelihoods, and their lives. This insidious scourge has taken a terrible toll on the world of entertainment, as well as in the Black community as a whole. It is always possible to find some good in whatever bad the we experience. In the case of Whitney Houston's death, one of the good things to come out was the positive depiction of Black culture that was broadcast throughout the nation at her funeral. To Cissy Houston's credit, she insisted on having her daughter's funeral at the church where she got her start, New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey. She could have had it somewhere else, but she chose to honor Whitney's roots and to positively highlight Black traditions. It was a classy experience, and Whitney would have been proud. One other thing that may have resulted from this high profile death and funeral is the evil of drugs, and of the necessity to summon the strength to fight personal demons that are threatening to annihilate us. One of Whitney's more memorable interview statements was "Crack is Whack." Hopefully, this message will reverberate throughout the community and prevent others from falling into the trap of substance abuse. Rest in Peace, Whitney. We will miss you! And we send out condolences to the family.

I still have to pinch myself every now and then when thoughts turn to the first Black President of the United States, Barack Obama. I’m sixty-two and feel blessed I’m living this experience. His election was such an exciting historical moment that unfolded for all Americans, but especially for Black Americans. Even though some of us walked around thinking he wasn’t Black enough or wouldn’t make it, God had another plan. President Obama will complete his first term in November; his campaign for a second term has begun. This is another exciting time in our history. Shame on the naysayers who thought Obama wouldn’t make it. Shame on the haters who threatened his life and family. Please don’t think Obama was naïve enough to think that running for the highest office in this country would bring about racial equality overnight, a new season of togetherness, or that there wouldn’t be some struggling moments. Remember, he is a Black man in America. People see the color of his skin before they understand what’s in his heart and mind. Many still can’t get past

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR PRESIDENT OBAMA – WE STILL GOT YOUR BACK! To the Editor:

that. But many have, as we see great numbers that still support Obama and what he represents, and have bought into his candidacy for a second term. Through all the current political obstacles and ups and down, President Obama is standing tall. He’s had moments of trial and error and will certainly have more, but he is focused on moving this country forward from an office that he inherited that was already in disarray. And to this day, all that our President is trying to do is right some wrongs and get this nation back on its feet. He’s done well under the pressure that comes along with this presidency and being Black. President Obama represents well and I am proud of him as the first Black President. He has a loving relationship with his family, especially with his wife Michelle, and his two daughters. He is intelligent, has stamina, courage and faith. Even Colin Powell said Obama showed “intellectual vigor.” What people need to understand is that President Obama is a warrior with a fighting spirit. He’s been engaged and experienced in warfare most of his life. He’s been in the enemy’s camp before. In fact, for most Black Americans, we’ve been fighting and struggling for freedom, equality and justice for so long, we’ve gotten good at it. Struggle, in many ways, is who we are or who we have become. President Obama is courageous enough to

move beyond his color and comfort and push to the limits. That’s the spirit of The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream! Remember, it’s the great man that rises above obstacles that stand in his way. Scripture calls it being ‘conquerors.’ We continue to be challenged to see what this country can become. I believe God has a specific plan that He has commanded (Continued on page 7)

BEYOND THE RHETORIC

Our First Experience with Reparations By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist We have often discussed the need for reparations for the 400 years of slavery. The contexts of the discussions continue on as if we never had a chance with any form of reparations. I discovered back in the 1990’s that we indeed had a go with a form of reparations. The biggest problem was that we did not adequately exploit it nor pass it on to following generations. My curiosity got going when I read up on the first Black congressionally elected officials. They were elected as part of the Reconstruction following the Civil War. One of these giants was Senator Blanche Bruce from Mississippi. People don’t talk much about these trailblazers as they were all Republicans – like that has a negative meaning. Senator Bruce during his short tenure ensured that all freed slaves became immediately eligible for the Homestead Act of 1862 which provided immense opportunity for land ownership and wealth building. In reading up on the Homestead Act, I found that the Bureau of Land-

Harry C. Alford Management (BLM), a division of the Department of Interior, kept good records on all activity relating to this program. This program was a “game changer”. Any American citizen could identify government owned land, apply for a claim and then receive the property providing they would live on it and work it (usually farming). More than half the nation was applicable and it was meant to generate population and economic growth. This was applicable to freed Blacks also. I decided to probe deeper. Be careful of

what you ask; you may get it. I contacted the BLM and asked for a formal briefing. They set up a meeting with me in Lorton, Virginia and gave me a great overview. Then the Deputy Secretary asked if my people were from the South. I informed him that my people evolved from Bossier Parrish, Louisiana. They declared that someone in my family benefited from the Homestead Act. I challenged him on that. He asked, “Give me one of your grandfather’s name”. I stated “Thomas Harry Alford. He put the name into their very elaborate database and instantly it “hit”. “Thomas H. Alford received a land grant for 160 acres on March 20, 1916”. I was shocked and my first reaction was that my grandfather had 40 acres, not 160, or so we all thought. I walked out of there with a photo copy of the deed and a whole different mindset on the history of my people. A trip to the courthouse in Bossier Parrish, LA was in order to verify all of this. I arrived at the Benton, LA courthouse ready to spend hours researching this “controversy”. Sure enough shortly after the date

on the deed an entry was found, “Thomas H. and Fannie Alford awarded 160 acres from the US Government”. However, two lines later “Thomas H. and Fannie Alford transfer 120 acres to Mr. Roos”. In my shock I went to the clerk for an explanation. She chuckled and then said, “It looks like Ol’ Man Roos got to your granddaddy”. She then went on to explain that what I had just detected was one act of some of the greatest land racketeering which prevailed throughout the South. She said, “Follow all activity by Roos and see how he legally connived land from Black folks”. You see my grandparents were illiterate like most Blacks down South. He, and others like him, would approach them and inform them that he could get them free land. Yes, he would make a claim and apply in their name for 160 acres at a time. When it was approved he would give them 40 acres and take 120 acres for himself. This guy made a fortune doing this. He would even have a strategy of picking up these 120 acre clumps so that they would be contiguous and he, in the end, would have giant masses of land

to develop and flip for big money. All this at the expense of my grandparents and many, many others who had a great opportunity before them but couldn’t get the right technical assistance or governmental follow through. I showed my relatives the documentation and they became angry at me as if I let it happen (kill the messenger). This program lasted for decades and could have taken Blacks to another level of economic power and self-sufficiency. However, this great opportunity came before us and we just couldn’t pull it off. A few Blacks were educated enough to take advantage of the program. They would become prominent land owners and community leaders. Also, they would become targets for those envious of their acumen and newly claimed power. Life would not be easy as someone was trying to take that land at every opportunity. Many would soon lose what they had earlier won. Mr. Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce®. Website: www.nationalbcc.org. Email: halford@nationalbcc.org.

Spying on Sharpton and Other Black Leaders By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist A recent report that New York City Police Department may have spied on Al Sharpton as he prepared to protest the acquittal of three police officers in the 2006 shooting death of Sean Bell brings back memories of a carefully-orchestrated national effort to discredit civil rights leaders, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In his NYPD Confidential column, posted on the Huffington Post under the headline, “Spying on the Rev.,” veteran police reporter Len Levitt wrote: “A NYPD informant spied on the Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network [NAN] as the group was organizing large-scale protests of the Sean Bell case acquittals, a police document shows.” It continued, “The confidential informant infiltrated a NAN meeting on May 3, 2008, and reported back to the NYPD’s Intelligence Division, according to a document marked ‘secret,’ which was obtained by NYPD Confidential.” At the time, Sharpton was planning to create a city-wide traffic jam because three plainclothes and undercover officers The Chicago Crusader

George E. Curry had killed an unarmed Bell after he left his bachelor’s party at a club in Queens. According to authorities, Bell and two of his friends were shot 50 times. On April 25, three police officers indicted in the case were acquitted of all charges. “According to the police document, the informant, who was identified not by name but by a five-digit number given to him by the department, provided the NYPD with a detailed description of NAN’s protest plans, including the names of prominent AfricanAmericans set to participate, the locations where protestors would gather and the number of demonstrators who would offer themselves up for arrest,” the story recounted. Sharpton and nearly 200 protest-

ers were arrested after they brought the city to a halt by blocking major traffic arteries. Although he gets the headline, this is not about Al Sharpton. Rather, it is about the reprehensible practice by the FBI and local police departments to undermine legal and legitimate protests. From 1956 to 1971, the FBI operated a program called COINTELPRO, an acronym for Counter Intelligence Program. Initially established to spy on organizations suspected of communist ties, the program was expanded by J. Edgar Hoover to include the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Black Panther Party, the Nation of Islam, the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), the National Lawyers Guild and other left-leaning groups. A congressional committee, chaired by Senator Frank Church, issued a report that concluded, “Many of the techniques used would be intolerable in a democratic society even if all of the targets had been involved in violent activity, but COINTELPRO went far beyond that…the Bureau conducted a sophisticated vigilante operation aimed squarely at pre-

venting the exercise of First Amendment rights of speech and association, on the theory that preventing the growth of dangerous groups and the propagation of dangerous ideas protect the national security and deter violence.” The stated goal of COINTELPRO was to “expose, disrupt, misdirect, or otherwise neutralize” organizations that it deemed “subversive.” A book titled, The Lawless State: The Crimes of the U.S. Intelligence Agencies, states: “Officials of the nation’s number one law enforcement agency agreed to use ‘all available investigative techniques’ to develop information for the use ‘to discredit’ King. Proposals discussed included using ministers, ‘disgruntled’ acquaintances, ‘aggressive’ newsmen, ‘colored’ agents, Dr. King’s housekeeper, and even Dr. King’s wife, or ‘placing a good-looking female plant in King’s office’ to develop discrediting information and to take action that would lead to his disgrace.” The FBI taped what it said were Dr. King’s extramarital sexual encounters. The book recalled, “Unknown to King…the FBI, at the height of the public controversy, took its most distressing step. It mailed the tapes to the SCLC office in Atlanta with a covering letter urging King Saturday, February 25, 2012

to commit suicide or face public revelation of the information on the tapes on the eve of the [Nobel Peace Prize] award ceremonies in Sweden.” Although COINTELPRO is supposedly a thing of the past, its dirty tricks continue to be practiced today. In one of his racist rants, Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul wrote in the 1990s – or had someone else write under his name – that Dr. King was a “world-class philanderer who beat up his paramours.” In the same breath, he claimed that Dr. King “seduced underage girls and boys.” It’s a vile and patently false allegation, but the intent was to smear Dr. King, not tell the truth. A similar campaign was apparently underway to discredit Sharpton. The news story disclosing that NYPD spied on Sharpton also stated, “Two undercover police officers who spied on Black protest groups in the 1980s told this reporter in 1998 that the department was so intent on discrediting Sharpton that they were tasked by their superiors to spread rumors that he was ho(Continued on page 17) 5

Worrill’s World By Dr. Conrad W. Worrill

Creating A Mumia Abu-Jamal curriculum (Dr. Conrad W. Worrill, National Chairman Emeritus, National Black United Front /NBUF located at 1809 East 71st Street, Suite 211, Chicago, Illinois 60649, 773.493.0900 Fax #773.493.9819, e-mail: nbufichi@sbcglobal.net, Web site: www.nbufront.org)

Dr. Conrad Worrill Several years ago, I received an e-mail from a group of teachers from Oakland, California and New York City suggesting that the world renown case of political prisoner, Mumia Abu-Jamal become a part of the regular lesson plans in elementary and high schools throughout America. Mumia was convicted of the murder of a Philadelphia police officer in 1982 and has been a prisoner on death row for seventeen years. He has maintained his

innocence and supporters have gathered and presented evidence that “calls into question the verdict and the entire conduct of the courts and the police in his case.” The educators stated in the email that “We are public school teachers from Oakland, California and New York City. Between January and May 1999, educators in dozens of schools in the Bay Area and New York offered lessons on issues raised by the case of Mumia Abu-Jamal. We found that our students benefited enormously from these lessons. We are asking other educators to join with us this Fall in presenting pro and con readings, discussions, debates, writing assignments, video showings, rap / poetry workshops, art projects in the public schools and other educational sites.” This curriculum strategy needs to be updated and implemented at this time in history. As an educator myself, I think this is an excellent idea that all educators, particularly African in America educator’s, should incorporate into their lessons throughout this school year. By incorporating the case of Mumia into educator’s lesson plans, it could provide a creative way to expand the lessons into the study of the Criminal Justice System in America and the devastating trend of

warehousing African in America men in the prisons of this country. For starters, teachers can raise the question, “Who is Mumia Abu-Jamal?” Mumia Abu-Jamal is an African in America journalist and long-time advocate for racial and economic justice. In 1969, he was a high school student and a writer for the weekly newspaper of the Black Panther Party. In 1980, he was elected president of the Association of Black Journalists in Philadelphia and was well known for his writings and radio commentary on the racism and brutality of that city’s police force. Mumia’s case has generated a worldwide movement aimed at stopping his potential execution and freeing him from the hands of the white supremacy political system in the state of Pennsylvania. By examining the Mumia AbuJamal case, inquiring students will probably ask the question, what is a political prisoner? The most accepted definition of a political prisoner is a person who is incarcerated because of their political beliefs and actions that are in opposition to the policies of the United States Government. These lessons could also introduce students to cases of other African in America political prisoners who have been languishing

away in America’s prisons for years such as: Sundiata Acoli, Dr. Mutulu Shakur, and Sekou M. Abdullah Odinga. Students could be given research assignments political prisoners and others. Also, students could be assigned to research the clemency and release of the Puerto Rican FALN political prisoners. Mumia’s case has reached a critical junction and the expansion of educating students about his case could serve to help mobilize more young people to get involved in the enormous support work taking place around the world to help free this courageous African in America man. The legal team assembled to aid Mumia explained that “All appeals by Mumia Abu-Jamal in the Pennsylvania court system have been denied, and he is about to begin his appeals in the federal courts. Under the restrictive terms of the Effective Death penalty Act of 1996, Mumia must file his petition for a writ of habeas corpus before the end of October 1999. Habeas corpus is simply the technical legal term for asking the federal courts to review whether Mumia has been sentenced legally by the state courts. Mumia’s lawyers contend that “In general, action in the federal courts will go much faster than it

did in the state courts. Thus, we are now entering the final phase of the battle to save Mumia’s life. This is why we must proceed with a greater degree of urgency and determination.” All freedom loving educators have a duty, in my judgment, to infuse lessons of Mumia’s case in the classrooms of America to help students factually understand the gross injustices of this so-called white supremacy Criminal Justice System that is committing rampant genocide against our people. At this moment in history, it is imperative that will address the issue of Mumia’s case, and others, in our struggle for freedom, justice, independence, and liberation. As Mumia has pointed out, “Conventional wisdom would have one believe that it is insane to resist this, the mightiest of all empires, the victor in the Cold War, the empire that devastated Iraq, and all that. But what history really shows is that today's empire is tomorrow’s ashes. That nothing lasts forever, and that to not resist is to acquiesce in your own oppression. The greatest form of sanity that anyone can exercise is to resist that force that is trying to repress, oppress, and fight down the human spirit.”

HELP ME SOMEBODY BY JULIANNE MALVEAUX I still have not gone to see the movie, The Help. I read the book and that was enough for me. I read a book where a white women fully engaged herself in cultural appropriation, putting 21st century voices into 1960s throats. Which Black women, in 1960, would have said that Black men left their families like trash by the side of the road? Maybe a 21st century feminist would have voiced such sentiments, but a sixties sister? Hardly. Speaking of hardly, my opinion hardly matters. There is rich discussion among African American women about the movie, the book, and the reality. I just want to remind my sisters that in 1940 70 percent of us were maids, or private household workers. I want to remind us that even those of us who had advanced degrees worked some time as a maid. I want folks to remember the scene in The Color Purple where the Oprah charac-

Dr. Julianne Malveaux ter was incarcerated because she had the dignity to decline private household work. Many Black women did “days work” because they needed to make a living. Many were humiliated into doing days work to keep the peace in their household or community. In other words, no matter who you were,

6

you should still serve. My opinions about days work are rooted in my past, both as a daughter and as a researcher. My mom, Proteone Malveaux, is a retired social worker. She worked with organizations that organized private household workers. As a kid, I stuffed envelopes for a woman named Helen Little, who led the National Welfare Rights Association in San Francisco. Women like Mrs. Little and my mom were dedicated to ensuring that private household workers got fair pay, vacations, and dignity of work conditions. Too many folk, back in the day, thought that used clothes or leftover food were a substitute for a living wage. When I moved to Boston, I somehow connected with a woman who was doing work on training private household workers. There was an irony. The federal government had actually funded her organization to train maids, and I thought the best way to train

them was to move them out of household work. Somehow, in graduate school, my mentor Dr. Phyllis Wallace, encouraged me to write about my experiences, and about the data that undergirded them. It was interesting to explore the facts, the fiction, and the many ways Black women have been pushed into the role of nurturing others and the stereotypes this has engendered. So help me, somebody, if I haven’t rushed to see The Help. I’d rather see a movie about the National Domestic Workers Union, founded by Dorothy Lee Bolden in 1968. Or I’d rather see Mrs. Little featured in a film about the National Welfare Rights Organization. Instead, I’m clapping for Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer who garnered Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress accolades from the Screen Actors Guild. Davis is a contender for an Oscar, and in many ways, that’s a good thing.

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

Also a bad thing. Whenever Black folks win Oscars it’s because they hark back to stereotypes, letting white folks wish they were in the land of cotton. A sister is not going to win an Oscar (never mind even being casted in a role) as a scientist, leader, dreamer, or thinker. Where is the Coretta Scott King film, which ought to be most compelling? Or, in reality TV world, where is the Michelle Obama film? In order to win recognition we have to be subservient. We have to serve. Help me somebody. When I made critical comments about the book, The Help I was flooded with email comments from Bennett alums who said that I should not be critical of a film that “lifted up” Black women. For a moment I was stunned, and even a bit chastened. Then I realized that this work, this private household work, is private, personal, and even sad. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Continued from page 4) Scripture says in Isaiah 52:7, “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace.” (I’m not confused; I know that messenger is Jesus.) But that’s also the message of President Obama. He just might be one who contributes to reintroducing humanity on this earth. Continue to pray for President Obama and his family as they move into the final year of his presidency and the campaigning of another term. Pray for his protection against all evil and that righteousness will prevail.

President Obama to do; a mission of bringing new light to this country. Christians call it ‘coming out of darkness into the light.’ Call it a new beginning or a movement; the strong energy cannot be stopped by anyone. Obama’s time now is to rescue, recapture and reclaim anything that stands in the way of change and progress. President Barack Obama will prevail. We have tasted the new spirit and energy in the White House and it is to be commended and continued. We started with, “Yes, We Can.” It was replaced by “Yes, We Must,” and finally, “Yes, We Did It.” The new mantra is, “We don’t quit.” Think about those ancestors that came before us who didn’t quit in the struggle for freedom and equality. They just wanted to make things better for us. Our ancestors took risks and endured blood, sweat and tears we don’t even think about so that each generation would have a better life. In Springfield, when Obama gave his speech, a newsperson said, “Obama is the trumpet of the new generation.” How refreshing is that. He speaks not of color but of character content on a universal level. (Dr. King would be proud of that focus.) President Obama is a breath of fresh air. He brings a positive feel good message of change and hope for all people. Didn’t he sing, “Let’s Stay Together” recently? With many people hurting, we need hope. That’s what Obama’s presidency has meant to me.

Dear Editor: I read with deep interest the article in the press that the Mayor of Chicago met recently with the Chatham Business Association members and stated that he wants to help the so called minority businesses to grow. My first suggestion to him is be as fair to Black business owners as you are to others when giving out city contracts as Mayor Harold Washington was when he was mayor. According to the press when Mayor Washington was mayor the minority contractors received 30 percent (30%) of all city con-

tracts. Since that time I have read it has decreased to about 7%. The biggest concern is what can we get Black consumers to do to help Black owned businesses. I have been in business most of my adult life. I can speak from experience. If you don’t have enough money, doing business with the city or the federal government is one of the fastest ways of getting consumers in the community to spend their money with the business owners who live in the community. I really believe Blacks don’t realize how they can improve their economic condition by spending their money with the business owners who live in the community. If we do as I suggest, we could create our own jobs instead of having to spend so much time trying to get others to give us a job. Following my suggestion; more people would read the Black press, eat more at Black restaurants, have our clothes cleaned at Black cleaners and we would teach economics in our church just as we do spirituality. Since we live together and go to church together, education, votes, and dollars will get us off the economic bottom. Buy Black! Reverend Dr. Webb Evans Founder and President UAPA

PRESIDENT HAVING FUN Now Ima know it’s eight months or so before the election, but if things keep going the way they are now, the President will sing himself right back in the White House. First, it was Al Green’s song, and now he’s singing the blues “Sweet Home Chicago.” Ima loves it!!! Let the dumb Republicans try to find someone to beat the President and continue the way they are going about it and not only will his campaign be a “singing” success, it could very well be a “cakewalk” as well. -ImaAIN’T THAT SOMETHING??? Folks in the hood are cracking up about the nerve of some of Chicago’s Black spotlighters who are soliciting money to publish a

“Blues Boy” President book on the President that they plan to sell for profit. Who is the pjesus do they think folks are? First of all, why do we need them to put together a book to sell to us? Everybody knows that some of the participants are real hustlers. Now if they want to publish a book, at least they need to fund their own project. ‘Tis not the way it’s usually done you know. You publish a book and then you sell it and you can keep the profits. It’s highly unusual to solicit donations to publish the book, sell it and then keep the profits. We bet the one who thought up the idea is also the one that got away with hookwinking some newspaper giants in the city and now is probably thinking up a new scheme since that operation went belly up. Once fooled shame on you, twice fooled shame on ME!!! -Ima(Continued on page 17)

A pioneer Black banker’s motto and history lesson: “Tell them we’re rising” By Charlene Crowell Each February, communities across the country honor the varied trailblazing contributions of African-Americans. These observances serve not only as Black History lessons; but also inspiration for this generation’s challenges. Whether the issue is triple-digit interest on small dollar loans, or steering consumers into high-cost mortgages when cheaper ones were

Black banks were in operation. In communities across the country, loans from these banks benefited aspiring Black businesses often turned down for loans from white institutions. McDonald’s owner happy to carry on Black history By Wendell Hutson Every day that Keith Allen wakes up he thinks about the opportunities that have been afforded to him during his lifetime. At age 51 he has survived a divorce and battled cancer and is now one of 15 Black franchise owners that make up the Black McDonald’s Operators Association. He is currently the owner and operator of six McDonald’s restaurants including the first Blackowned McDonald’s at 6560 S. Stony Island Ave. His other five restaurants are located at 6900 S.

Allen purchased his first McDonalds’ store in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1988. Later he obtained another McDonald’s at 11421 S. Halsted Street. That store is now owned by Keith Pryor, another BMOA member. Keith Allen bought the Stony Island restaurant December 2008; Herman Petty became the first Black McDonald’s owner when he bought the Stony Island restaurant in 1968. Allen worked for Petty at the Stony Island restaurant from 1976 (when he was 17) to 1988. “I was his right hand man and if he were here today I am sure he would be proud of the job I am do-

By age 19, he was a McDonald’s manager and that is when he realized the opportunity before him. “My best friend worked here (Stony Island restaurant) too and that is why I initially wanted to work at this location,” he recalled. “This store is very meaningful to me because it holds a lot of memories for me. This store (Stony Island) has been rebuilt three times. I think it was in God’s plan for me to be the owner of this store.” He added that the Stony Island restaurant produces the highest sales among his six restaurants and credits public entities, such as the Museum of Science & Industry, for drawing large crowds to the restaurant. And having free Wi-Fi service doesn’t hurt either.

He was a good teacher and that is what I try to be today to my employees.” The Stony Island restaurant employs 60 workers and the majority are Black, Allen said. At age 17, Allen, who was raised by a single mother in the Englewood community, worked at the

One year after the blizzard of 2011, ComEd announces improvements in storm response, including new technology, additional personnel, enhanced communications to customers In front of a newly acquired, $1 million state-of-the-art regional mobile command center, ComEd recently announced a number of steps taken and investments made to enhance its storm response process. The enhancements include the deployment of new communications and operations technology, enhanced processes and procedures during a storm, and additional field personnel. The effort is part of the company’s long-term commitment to continue to improve its customer restoration process after a major storm.

The announcement comes a year after high winds and snow pummeled the ComEd service territory in early February 2011. The blizzard was considered Chicago’s third heaviest on record and knocked 179,000 customers out of power. More than 1,600 employees were part of a storm response team, many of them strategically staged at hotels the night before the event as part of storm preparation. ComEd activated 140 snow removal crews with heavy equipment to clear the way for its storm response team. Ninety percent of customers were restored within 18 hours of losing power. “In the last twelve months, we’ve seen some of the most challenging

“I want people to see my restaurants as a place they can come to conduct business and not just eat. I have a diverse base of customers from seniors and teenagers to the middle-class,” Allen said. As a BMOA member Allen added that he would like to see the organization grow because “we need more African American (McDonald’s) operators.” In short, the BMOA is a membership organization made up of 15 Chicago-area and Northwest Indiana-area McDonald’s restaurant owners. Members also are committed to exhibiting leadership, supporting education and developing partnerships within the African American communities and various other communities that they serve. The BMOA has set the standard in the communities they serve for entrepreneurship and giving back to their customers.

According to Chicago-based Flowers Communications Group, a Black-owned marketing and public relations firm, which represents the BMOA, the other 14 BMOA members are Lance Jones, Keith Pryor, Derrick Taylor, Yolanda Travis, Marvin Spence, Darrell Winbush, Esperanza McSween, Derrick Lott, Ron Lofton, Phil Douglas, Melvin Buckley, Doris Boulrece, Blanton Canady, and BMOA President Thomas Brown. When Allen is not working he enjoys reading, watching TV and traveling. He describes himself as “a very blessed man who comes from a humble beginning and whose loyalty, dedication and drive has created a history of success, for which he serves as an example to others seeking the same.” He encourages everyone to visit their local McDonald’s especially those owned by BMOA members.

Beck and more for "Howlin' for Hubert," celebrating the musical legacy of Hubert Sumlin. On March 6th, he will return to the Apollo for "Robert Johnson at 100," celebrating the centennial of the legendary bluesman Robert Johnson alongside The Roots, Taj Mahal, Big Head Todd and more. During the past year, Keb Mo has toured all over the world in support of his latest album The Reflection, which was released this past summer. The album earned a Grammy nomination for "Best Blues Album," making his sixth nomination in this category with three wins under his belt. Keb Mo has consistently garnered acclaim throughout his career. He co-wrote "I Hope" with The Dixie Chicks, which received a Grammy nomination for Country Song of the Year. A gifted songwriter, Keb's songs have been covered by legendary artists including B.B. King, Natalie Cole and more and he has appeared on recordings by Willie Nelson, Ray Charles and Jackson Browne, to name a few.

Earlier this week, Image Entertainment and One Village Entertainment proudly presented Bernie Mac’s tribute on DVD. Known as one the “Kings of Comedy,” Mac was one of the brightest and most influential comics to ever walk onto a stage, and here is a documentary that’s as unpredictable as the man himself. Famous for his ribald standup and hilarious TV show, most fans have no idea of the life Mac led offstage. Mac (who passed away in 2008) won over the audience with his very first appearance on “Def Comedy Jam,” when he took the microphone and exclaimed to the crowd, “I Ain't Scared of You!” It was his sharptongued humor, mastered in the streets of Chicago, that had people rolling in the aisles, but it was Mac’s sly smile and warm wit that kept them coming back. The DVD follows the development of Mac’s unique performance style and his rise to fame. A tireless perfectionist, his comedy broke through barriers and made Mac an iconic figure in the entertainment world. The film unearths early footage and neverbefore-seen performances, courtesy of Mac's friends and family. In addition, his better-known work, such as the Kings of Comedy Tour, The Bernie Mac Show and several of his feature films, are included, along with fascinating behind-the-scenes memories. These memories include his HBO show, local performances at Milt Trenier’s and the old Cotton Club in Chicago. Directed by Robert Small (Back from Hell: A Tribute to Sam Kinison) and executive produced by Small and Rhonda McCullough (Mac’s wife), the DVD features exclusive interviews with his co-stars, colleagues and friends, including Anthony Anderson, Tom Arnold, Angela Bassett, Bill Bellamy, Cedric the Entertainer, Don Cheadle, Cameron Diaz, Mike Epps, Andy Garcia, D.L. Hughley, Warren Hutcherson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ali LeRoi, Je’niece McCullough (Mac’s daughter), Rhonda McCullough, Carl Reiner, Chris Rock, Zoe Saldana, Kellita Smith, Steven Soderbergh, Joe Torry and Camille Winbush.

Mac’s daughter conducted many of these interviews with each story contributing to the picture of Mac as an exceptional artist, husband, father and friend. She proudly holds her own, while chatting with Hollywood legends. Fellow comedians Steve Harvey, Hughley, Epps, Rock and Cedric the Entertainer have nothing but high praise for Mac. Diaz comments that many of the

scenes in the Charlie’s Angels movie were done right “off-thecuff,” and directors just let Mac roll with it. Reiner, a comedic icon himself, also spoke highly of Mac. I loved this DVD; it shows Bernie’s road to stardom, with a love for Chicago and his wife and daughter that couldn’t be disputed. Check online for availability.

Homewood-Flossmoor students uplift Black History Month By Matthew Bruce As the rest of the world was readying for the Super Bowl kickoff recently, an assembly of southlanders were kicking off Black History month with an ode to African American culture at Homewood-Flossmoor High School’s Mall Auditorium. It was the first year for the school-sponsored event, “Through the Years: An Evolution of African-American Music, Dance & Spoken Word.” The Feb. 6 show was a toast to Black heritage and featured singing, dancing, and poetry performances by H-F students, the school’s Inspirational Voices choir and its Viking Steppers dance team. The Najwa Dance Corps, a professional dance troupe from Malcolm X College, highlighted the show with an African dance recital to

open the event. “I was very happy. The kids did a fantastic job, and they were excited about the show,” said Donna Brumfield, who coordinated the event and touted the array of talent showcased. “That was important for us, because I think we as African American people, have so much talent, and such a variety of talents.” Brumfield said the event blossomed out of her role as diversity trainer for the school district, and looks to continue the show next year. The free talent showcase drew about 75 people, and many in the crowd called the appreciation for Black culture crucially important for students. “I’m a firm believer that you need to understand where you came from to know where you’re going, just from a level of respect

for yourself and knowing what really is in you,” said Homewood resident Reggie Peacock, who watched from the auditorium seats with his oldest son who is a freshman at H-F. “So I think it’s good that they’re reminded that others have sacrificed so that they have this opportunity. So make the best of it.” H-F junior Gene Mason IV – who performed under the stage name G4 – serenaded the crowd with his guitar-laced original composition, entitled “Love Struck.” “I really am honored to be a part of something like this, there’s so much culture,” he said. “This is what my people did. So it was just good to be a part of something that’s legacy.” Vikings senior Taylor Mills with her performance paid tribute to late blues songstress Etta James,

who died last month from complications of leukemia. Mills, a Howard University-bound songstress who finished in the top 10 at last year’s WGCI High School Idol contest, sang James’ 1960 ballad “All I Could Do Was Cry.” “It felt good, it was positive,” she said. “I wanted it to be more packed, but with the Super Bowl, a lot of people didn’t come.” Catherin Mason looked on as her daughter recited an original poem for the crowd. Mason said she would have hoped to see more attendance in support of the event in its first year. “The show was pretty good. I was excited to see it,” Catherine Mason said. “I thought it was interesting because she is my third child to come out of H-F, and this is the first time I’ve seen a Black History program. I feel all the schools should have it. Even if

Johanna Mason, a member of the H-F poetry club, admitted being nervous because it was her first solo spoken word performance, but said she felt like she’d accomplished something afterward. “Black history has always been celebrated in my family, so when I heard about it I got really excited,” she said. “I really wanted to talk about this because a lot of kids are really uneducated about our history.”

Jesse White Awards $11.9 Million to Public Libraries Statewide Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White has awarded grants totaling $11.9 million to 620 public libraries statewide. The awarded funds come from the Fiscal Year 2012 Illinois Public Library Per Capita and Equalization Aid Grants. “I am extremely proud of the outstanding service Illinois’ public libraries provide to our communities,” White said. “Our public libraries have never been more important to their patrons, serving almost 12 million people. I truly believe public libraries are cornerstones of our communities, and I am pleased to help them provide funding to serve the public.” Per Capita Grant funding is authorized under Illinois library law and provides for expenses such as paying for materials, personnel, equipment, electronic access, telecommunications and technology. Equalization Aid Grants help certain public libraries that have a low library tax base ensure a minimum level of funding for library services. Some of the valuable services public libraries provide include: Free Internet access; books, magazines, newspapers, CDs and DVDs; audiobooks and eBooks; interlibrary loan service; reference services; social media tools; After school and summer programming for children; book clubs; multicultural programming and translation services; assistance with genealogy; Arranging special programs and services for senior citizens; Voter registration; meeting rooms for important community events. That’s speaking of the Black man and woman in America. So at Saviours’ Day we will experience the actual beginnings of the concrete manifestation of prophecy,” she added. Information will be presented by members of Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth through historical narratives, and technical explanations to conference-goers and others watching via Internet. Human Tragedy and Triumph = Ratings Magic By Cheryl Pearson-McNeil I am always fascinated by the impact of human emotions on our consumer behavior – whether those emotions are inspired by tragedy or triumph. Two television broadcasts made ratings history recently, one because of a tragedy and one because of a triumph: the 54th Annual Grammy Awards on CBS and the contest between the Los Angeles Lakers and the New York Knicks, February 10, on ESPN. Nielsen research has proven Americans love sports and music programming. African-Americans are typically well-represented in both. The Grammy Awards have been a viewing favorite. Research backs up the common sense notion that Blacks tend to gravitate to programming where there are larger numbers of people who look like us – but this year, the number of us who watched the Grammys was almost off the charts (no pun intended). The recent 54th Annual Grammy Awards attracted nearly 40 million viewers (39.9 million), which made it the largest Grammy audience since 1984 and the second

Cheryl Pearson-McNeil largest in the history of the broadcast. Of those 39.9 million viewers, African- Americans made up 6.21 million. That means a whopping 60% more Black folks watched the Grammys this year than last (3.7 million out of a total viewership of 24.7 million in 2011). Some people like me may tune in to see who’s wearing what. How fabulous will our favorites be, or how outrageous? Others are true music aficionados. While the why for this year’s phenomenal success of the Grammys has

not yet been officially analyzed, I suspect that the tragic news of the sudden death of beloved music icon Whitney Houston the night before piqued the increased interest. If you were like me and my friends, we were reeling with disbelief. Tuning into the Grammys seemed to offer a kind of solace and comradery in our collective desire to pay homage to a musical phenomenon who was one of our own. Now, in the interest of full disclosure, the show didn’t hold my attention for long beyond the luscious LL's prayer for "our fallen sister" (a very nice touch). But after his intro and having glimpsed the outrageous outfits of Nicki Minaj, Gaga and the sweet acknowledgements from Alicia Keys and Bruno Mars, I begged my Facebook friends to wake me up when they got to the Whitney tribute. Someone from Ft. Wayne, Ind. (my hometown) actually alerted me when Glen Campbell's tribute came on. (You couldn't grow up in the Fort without being inundated with his music back in the day). So I loudly and proudly sang along to the tribute. My son watched me with

his mouth hanging open in disbelief. "Really, mom?! Seriously, you LIKE this country music?" (If he reacted like this to my Glen Campbell tribute, he does NOT want to be around when my sister, his Aunt Natalie, goes berserk over Kenny Rogers). Following Jennifer Hudson’s moving tribute of “I Will Always Love You,” and after fighting back tears, I clicked off. On the flip side, Americans love to cheer on an underdog, a “Rocky,” a champion who rises from the ashes of obscurity to achieve victory. In two words: Jeremy Lin. It was my basketballplaying son who turned me onto the phenomenon that was taking place with the undrafted 23-year old, Harvard-educated AsianAmerican from California and his fortuitous match-up against the New Jersey Nets. Lin has averaged 27 points per game – launching him from bench warmer to global superstar. In addition to a 73 percent increase in viewership of Knicks games on MSG and ESPN in New York, nationally the February 10 game between the Knicks and the Lakers on ESPN was the most-watched Friday

night regular season NBA game on the network, so far this season - with just over 3 million viewers. On top of that, NM Incite (a Nielsen McKinsey company) reports that social media buzz has also hit a frenzied pitch around the world since the first February 4 game. Even the phrase “LinSanity” has been coined. The online chatter about Lin has surpassed conversations about the Knicks, LeBron James and Kobe Bryant combined. Now, that's powerful. And so are you. Because, if you follow these ratings stories, you know these surges in increased viewership are a result of people just like you and me tuning in. It's great news for the networks as well as the advertisers. Those advertisers are dedicated to reaching us – the consumers. Which brings me to my mantra, "Knowledge is power." The power is in your hands, and so is the remote control. Cheryl Pearson-McNeil is senior vice president of public affairs and government relations for Nielsen. Tech Talk Your E-mail doesn’t belong to you By Billy Montgomery If you’re like me, then you grew up with parents who cautioned not to sign any documents without first reading them. Somehow that knowledge gets browsed over in this Internet age we live in, where virtual world anxiety often

defeats real world common sense. As a result, many users are pointing and clicking on terms of service agreements without reading, let alone, understanding what they are consenting to. While the simple click of the mouse can get you into the service you desire, not reading the TOS can get you

into serious problems. Because many of them are loaded with legal talk, on the surface it is understandable why so many people just click “I agree,” when it pops up. However, the key is to remember that what you’re clicking on is a legal contract that supposes both you and the service provider agree to the outlined terms created by the supplier. Ultimately, the TOS serves as a way for the company to cover its butt in the event consumers try to file a lawsuit. In its defense, the company can always say you agreed to the terms to settle any disputes. And just because you didn’t read the document, just as is the case in any legal matter, ignorance of the law is no excuse. This is particularly true when it comes to email. In a few years, electronic mail has quickly become a staple in everyday interaction, but with it comes contractual obligations that grant freedom to use the service, but not without responsibilities. When you send emails, you obviously know that you are giving information to the recipient. However, you may also be providing information to a number

of other people, including your employer, the government and anyone else who, even the recipient, may forward the content. What’s worse, is outside of controlling what you send, there’s nothing you can do to prevent it from happening. While the federal Electronic Communications Privacy Act makes it unlawful under certain circumstances for someone to read or disclose the contents of e-mail (18 USC § 2511), there are loopholes, which allow many exceptions.

e-mail on its system. So keep in mind that any e-mail sent from a business is probably not private.

• Your Internet service provider can view private e-mail if it suspects the sender is attempting to damage the system or harm another user. Random monitoring, however, is generally not allowed.

The bottom line is to be careful and use discretion when you are online. Also, remember, you are in control of what you send. Few people can say someone has a gun to their head forcing them to send out information. And while you can’t control who looks at your information, you certainly control the content of what they view.

• The ISP may legally view and disclose private e-mail if either the sender or the recipient of the message grants permission. In fact, as part of the TOS, some ISPs require a consent agreement from new members when they sign up. • If your employer owns the email system, the employer may inspect the contents of employee

ComEd strengthens storm response capabilities (Continued from page 11) and severe weather in ComEd’s history, and we made a commitment to all our customers that we would enhance our ability to respond to these extreme events,” said Anne Pramaggiore, president and chief operating officer of ComEd. “Providing reliable service and fast restoration is a 24 by 365 focus at ComEd.While Mother Nature’s wrath is unpredictable and unavoidable, ComEd has made progress on a number of fronts, and we feel better prepared to deliver enhanced service to our customers should another storm of this scale hit.” A number of additional improvements are planned or underway, including: Better communications to customers and municipalities: • ComEd is strengthening its customer service center’s call volume capacity. This will reduce the number of customers that experience difficulty getting through during an extended outage situation when call volume is at its highest. The enhancement will be in place by the end of the second quarter. • ComEd has implemented a

two-way text messaging capability that allows customers to text their outage to ComEd and enables ComEd to text restoration information back to customers. • ComEd will launch a mobile application in the second quarter for both Android and Apple iOS operating platforms, and it will provide outage reporting and outage status push notifications. • ComEd has improved the Estimated Time for Restoration (ETR) system across all communication platforms including website, call center, and voice recognition system. This will prevent customers’ receiving conflicting information about when the lights will be back on. • ComEd has strengthened its municipal outreach communications to work more effectively with local officials on several fronts -- for example, identifying and prioritizing life safety facilities for restoration and providing timely information about local storm restoration progress. An increased number of storm responders and other resources for restoring customers faster: • ComEd has increased the number of First Responders by an addi-

This will provide for enhanced management and coordination of individual field teams. Deployed new communications and operations technology to enhance field coordination and quicken storm restoration: • ComEd has expanded GPS deployment across its entire mobile dispatch fleet to strengthen coordination of resources, allowing more effective storm restoration for customers. • ComEd has built a new, $1 million, state-of-the-art regional mobile command center (MOC). The unit, which can house 25 ComEd engineers, dispatchers and other key storm response team members, comes fully equipped with the latest communications, satellite and video conferencing technology. The MOC will be deployed to the worst hit areas in a storm, bringing ComEd closer to its customers in times of severeweather and damage to the system. This will optimize restoration efforts, allowing ComEd to understand and respond to customer needs faster. • ComEd has provided all first responders with new mobile dispatch units to improve connectivity between field teams and central dispatch centers. • ComEd has added new generators to its inventory to support emergency restoration needs. THE CHATTERBOX (Continued from page 7) A SAD NOTE Word reached Ima that former Congresswoman from Gary and Gary City Clerk passed away earlier this week. We send our condolences to the family. She was the one that finally got the “King Holiday Bill” passed in Congress that created the holiday we all observe in January. She never received the accolades she should have for this great accomplishment, but in no way did she deserve the gutter journalism that the Post Tribune (who does not want the designation of Gary in front of their name) gave her the day before and after her death. The paper may be owned by the Chicago Sun-Times now, but the same old prejudice that destroyed the city of Gary is alive and well. Hmmmm, maybe we need to realize that the owner may be poisonous in more than one city.
