Embattled funeral home director says he has done nothing illegal Several in community speak in support of Carter Funeral Chapels By J. Coyden Palmer When it was plastered over the news last week that the Carter Funeral Chapels in the South Shore community was closed by city and state officials, the coverage did considerable damage to the credibility of owner Harry J. Carter III. Even after he was sued earlier this week, by a family who claims Carter held the body of their loved one for 45 days,
the longtime mortician has vowed his business will be back to running by the end of the week, adding he, nor any of his employees has done anything illegal. “It’s been alleged that I have been dodging questions, which is not true,” said Carter, who spoke outside of his business at 2100 E. 75th Street on Feb. 25. “I come forth with no venom towards the press and I understand the viewpoint of all the families affected by this. But I speak here today because nobody seems to understand mine.” Spencer Leak Sr., president of Leak and Sons Funeral Home, 7838 S. Cottage Grove Ave., said economics is the main reasons for spikes in cremations.
Chicago Public Schools overhauling education By Wendell Hutson In its quest to improve its schools the nation’s third largest school district is overhauling public education with new programs, school closures and expanding its popular turnaround method. The Chicago Board of Education approved the closure of seven schools and to turn around 10 struggling schools. The state awarded the Chicago Public Schools a $114.67 million grant from Illinois Jobs Now! to construct new buildings or expand, repair and update existing ones. This capital funding will also provide needed classroom space while creating thousands of new construction jobs. Thirty other school districts in Illinois were also approved for a grant but CPS received the largest award from the $623 million pie. Looking ahead to the future is what the state is focused on with awarding these grants, said Governor Pat Quinn. “In order for our students to compete for the jobs of tomorrow, we must ensure they are receiving a quality education in quality

Restored funding means CeaseFire stays on the streets By Wendell Hutson The check may not have arrived yet but the $4.4 million penciled into this year’s state budget for CeaseFire allows the youth violence advocacy organization to maintain its street presence. “We employ about 133 people throughout Illinois including 99 in Chicago,” Tio Hardiman, executive director for CeaseFire Illinois, told the Crusader. “Now we can continue our work without any worries of interruption due to a lack of funds.” CeaseFire Illinois is a non-profit, Chicago-based organization whose main objective is to prevent youth violence. According to Hardiman, 95 percent of its budget goes back into the streets to further its cause of providing conflict resolutions to gangs and at-risk youth. Even though CeaseFire receives funding from other sources, such as the McCormick Foundation, the state
sponsored by CeaseFire last year. Hardiman noted proper communication is critical when it comes to dealing with youth. “If a gang member is shot, we go to the hospital to talk to that person and convince them not to retaliate,” explained Hardiman. “I tell the young cats that if you go out here and try to shoot the person who brought harm on you, the cops will get you. They are watching you already. I ask them do they really want to go to prison while their grandmother, who often raised them, is left alone.” Crime in some police beats on the West and South Sides are down, according to Hardiman, and he credits the collaboration between CeaseFire and the police for it. “I don’t want to take anything away from the Chicago police. They have been doing a good job. In the Austin community on the West Side and the Englewood community on the South Side,
“Had our state funding not been restored to its previous level we would have had to make up the difference by way of layoffs,”
Hardiman added. “We understand that during these tough, economic times the state is having it rough. So I am thankful to Governor (Pat)

ant with the U.S. Justice Department against CPS. “The playing field must be leveled and right now that is not the case,” Jackson said during a Monday teleconference with reporters. “Chicago is the most disfranchise school district in the state. No elected school board exists. No input from parents or Local School Councils when decisions about our children are made. Where is the fairness in that?” Jackson also said the actions of CPS amounts to ‘education apartheid’ and that is unacceptable. Brizard said that is not true. “How can it be apartheid when 90 percent of our students are Black and brown,” he said during a recent visit at Apostolic Church of God on the South Side whose 10,000 members are mostly Black. Hispanics make up the majority of the students at CPS with 178,284 students or 44.1 percent while Blacks account for 41.6 percent or 168,020 students. There are over 600 schools within CPS whose total student population was 404, 151 as of October 2011. CPS invested heavily in many schools set to close or be turned around, added Brizard. And despite spending more resources on such schools as Crane and Dyett high schools, many still performed poorly. In fact, CPS allocated $11.4 million this fiscal year to spend additional money for 25 academically challenged schools. Each school received, on average, $750,000 in discretionary funds, according to

CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOLS CEO Jean-Claude Brizard discusses classroom procedures at Catalyst Schools with the school’s principal Michael Kasan. They also discussed formal teacher observation and feedback. Marielle Sainvilus, press secretary for CPS. Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis said she is worried that more Black teachers will lose their jobs as a result of the recent school changes approved by the board. “Most of the tenured teachers laid off due to this process were Black,” Lewis said. But Sainvilus said that is not true and most teachers were white. “Of all teachers who were subject to layoff last summer 42 percent were white and 36 percent were African American,” explained Sainvilus. “Of tenured teachers laid off last summer, 40.8 percent were white, 31.4 percent African American and 10.8 percent Hispanic. (Keep in mind that) over 65 percent of those teachers have been rehired since that time. (And) of those rehired, 40 percent were African American, 37.6 percent were white and 12.7 percent were Hispanic.”
The most recent school change unveiled this week by Brizard and Mayor Rahm Emanuel is a new high school program that could allow students to bypass attending a community college after graduation. Besides, less than 10 percent of the 120,000-plus students who attend one of the seven City Colleges of Chicago graduate, according to Emanuel. “These schools will focus on skills graduates need in the modern workforce and Information Technology industry. Students will also have the option to earn college credits and complete a sixyear program with an associate’s degree,” explained Emanuel. While the goal is not to decrease enrollment at City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) a partnership between CPS and five technology companies could indirectly do just that in the next six years. Crusade to redevelop closed motel now a reality By Wendell Hutson On Monday Corey Brooks continued his quest to redevelop a shuttered, South Side motel after spending 94 days sleeping on top of its roof. Three months ago Brooks, pastor of New Beginnings Church, 6625 S. King Drive, began his journey to raise $450,000, which was needed to purchase the motel’s (Super 8) land, so the church could then demolish the building that had become an eyesore for the community far too long, said Brooks, 34. “The Woodlawn community does not need anymore hourly motels. It needs jobs, after school programs for youth and economic development,” explained Brooks. “I want our children to have a safe place besides home to go to after school. I want people to be able to shop in their own neighborhood at stores that offer quality merchandise and services and I want residents to be able to get the social services they need without being discouraged because they must travel far to receive help.” His vision is to build a $15 million community center in place of the motel that will offer youth and the community a private, elementary school, a social service center, retail stores, and a youth educational center. The church already has 75 elementary students attending its Master’s Academy School located inside the 2,500-member church across the street from the motel, and plans to move the school into the motel after its redevelopment. The church’s Project HOOD (Helping Others Obtain Destiny) program is spearheading the redevelopment project, which Brooks said he hopes would improve living conditions in the community. The project can now move forward thanks to a donation that
was made Friday, Feb. 24. On that day a letter written by one of Brooks’ members was read on the “Tom Joyner Morning Show,” a Black, national syndicated radio show on 106.3 FM. The letter explained why Brooks should be chosen the winner for a Harley Davidson motorcycle giveaway, which caught the attention of the contest sponsor, Hollywood producer Tyler Perry. The multimillionaire Perry, who was unaware of Brooks staying on top of a motel roof, said he was blown away by such sacrifice on Brooks’ part. “Is this guy for real? He has been up there since November away from his family?” Perry said on the air. “I’ll give him the $98,000, just tell him to come down and be with his family.” And come down is exactly what Brooks did on Feb. 24. “I want to thank Mr. Tyler Perry for his generosity. And just so you know, I spoke to his office today and they said instead of donating $98,000 he will make it an even $100,000,” Brooks said to a cheering crowd last Friday. The pastor confessed that he secretly came down prior to Feb. 24 after getting sick. “I was taken to the doctor, received some medication and then I immediately returned to the roof,” he said. “I also came down to speak at a funeral but beyond that I have remained faithful in my commitment to stay on top until the money was raised to bring me down.” An emotional Brooks, who cried during his 15-minute public address, thanked not only his family for sticking by his side but also the media. “The media did a good job keeping this issue in the news in a positive way. They could have said a lot of bad things but they did not and for that I thank you,” added Brooks, who was joined by state Sen. James Meeks, D-15th

the freshmen class this fall and a new grade will be added each year until it reaches grade 14. At Crusader press time, CPS had not yet determined how students would be admitted into the program. The new STEM schools will all be modeled after a high school in Brooklyn, N.Y. that opened last fall and allows its students to attend grades 9 to 14 and graduate with an associate’s degree in computer sciences. A SACRIFICE WELL DONE is how Corey Brooks Sr., pastor of New Beginnings Church on the South Side, described his 94 day journey sleeping on top of a closed, motel to raise money to buy the land so a community center can be built in its place. On Feb. 24 the pastor ended his fasting sleeping on the roof after Hollywood movie producer Tyler Perry agreed to donate the remaining $98,000 needed to reach its $450,000 goal. District, state Supreme Court candidate Joy Cunningham and Alderman Willie Cochran, whose 20th ward includes New Beginnings Church, 6620 S. King Drive. Meeks, who Brooks described as “my pastor,” told the crowd he will continue to work with Brooks on the project. “I want to help him make this one of the best community cen-
ters on the South Side. He has the ambition and drive to do it and I am going to support him all the way until the end.” Also on Friday Tyler’s latest movie “Good Deeds” was released and Brooks said after going home to “feel hot water run over my body, grab a shave and eat,” he planned to go see the movie at Inner City Entertainment’s (ICE) Chatham movie theater on
the South Side. ICE is the only Black-owned, independent movie distributor in the state. When asked if he would do it all over again, Brooks said yes. “It is a sacrifice I would do all over again. If this is what it takes to save our young, Black males from being murdered or sent to prison, then that it what I am prepared to do no matter how long it takes,” Brooks added.

BARACK OBAMA IS AMERICA’S PRESIDENT As can be expected, President Barack Obama is under siege. People are saying all kinds of things about him. The gridlock that he has been facing due to the Republican party brings to mind the “Council Wars” that the first Black Mayor of Chicago, Harold Washington, faced when he ascended to office. But this is much worse. The mudslinging, gridlock, and lying has a national impact. Unfortunately, many people, because they are not discerning and are motivated by racist rhetoric, will actually end up voting against their own interests because they believe the lies and impudent posturing of those who seek to topple the president. Some of Obama’s opponents are calling him “Hitler,” others are saying that he is the “Anti-Christ,” and still others are saying that he is an alien; that he was not born in the United States. These “birthers” just won’t give up; they are determined to have him ousted from office because they are (or say they are) convinced that they are right. Couple this with the notion that one group is saying that he is a Muslim, while others are saying he is Christian, and you have a ridiculous hodge podge. Incredibly, a few of his enemies are even accusing him of being a “terrorist.” It is hard to fathom the depth of vitriol that this president has had to endure, and it doesn’t take a genius to realize that a lot of this hokey opposition is due to racism. Recently, according to the advocacy group ColorOfChange, Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum accused President Obama of subscribing to a “phony theology.” Newt Gingrich called him the “food stamp president.” And more incredibly, Rick Santorum, in a recent speech, mocked the president’s goal of making college accessible to everyone by stating, “What a snob!” What...Obama’s a snob because he wants everyone to have access to higher education? That just doesn’t make sense. It is an illogical and irrational statement. Real snobs don’t want everyone to have access to those things that could level the playing field so that those at the bottom have an opportunity to look at them in the eye from an equal vantage point! In spite of this lunacy, the president has managed to: get Osama bin Laden; end the war in Iraq; repealed DADT (Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell); there has been no tax hike in 3 years; he saved the auto industry and 1.5 million jobs; enacted mortgage modification programs to save homeowner’s homes; reformed healthcare to make it more affordable; and freed hostages in Somalia, among other accomplishments. Of course, President Obama doesn’t walk on water. He has made some missteps, most possibly with Libya, and some Americans are suspicious of his ties to Israel. The truth of the matter, however, is that he has done incredibly well considering the circumstances. And if we wanted a perfect president, we would eschew a human being in favor of someone from heaven. President Obama is America’s president; his job of walking a tightrope in the middle is a difficult one. He has to satisfy Black constituents, White constituents and others. Are Americans smart enough to discern truth from fiction? Are they intelligent enough to look through the debris of desperate propaganda to see a different picture? We will certainly find out in November. Let’s hope the collective I.Q. of the American body politic is greater than 25! A luta continua.
The United American Progress Association on February 18 carried their information to the PUSH meeting about Buying Black. Reverend Dr. Webb Evans stated that if we spend most of our money with Black owned businesses, we will not only be celebrating Black History we will be making history in February. He stated that in 1987 in Houston, Texas the Progressive National Baptist agreed on a resolution that in the future that we will make some history while celebrating what Blacks have done in the past. If we spend most of our money with the business owners who live in the community that will be history that allows the future generations to celebrate what we have done. Dr. Webb Evans believes as Marcus Garvey and the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, “any race regardless of who they are if they are the majority in an area they should control it. But you can’t control what others won. We are the only people who live in a community where the people who live on the outside own more businesses in it than those who live in it. Others own all the businesses in their community and almost all in our community. Dr. Webb Evans states that he believes if Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was living he

If Pets Had Thumbs Day Dear Editor: March 3 is “If Pets Had Thumbs Day,” and one thing is certain: If cats had thumbs, they’d be pointing them down at people who put their cats through the lifelong trauma of declawing. Declawing is a painful mutilation that involves severing not just a cat’s nails, but whole phalanges (up to the first joint), including bones, ligaments, and
tendons. Depriving cats of these necessary and important body parts can cause personality changes (some cats become depressed, withdrawn, fearful, or refuse to use their litter boxes), difficulty balancing and walking, and chronic back and joint pain as the cat’s shoulder, leg, and back muscles weaken. Cats may not have thumbs, but they deserve to keep all the digits they were born with. Claws, (Continued on page 7)

BEYOND THE RHETORIC
Did Your Family Benefit from the Homestead Act? By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist Last week, I wrote about my grandfather’s experience with the Homestead Act of 1962. He applied and received 162 acres of free, fertile land from the United States government on March 20, 1916. Today, only 40 of those acres remain in the hands of his descendants. Too many times Blacks won this opportunity and then for various strange reasons we lost much of that land. In Louisiana alone (home of my roots) over 2.5 million acres were settled by nearly 23,000 applicants. Many of these applicants were Black. Many of you have contacted me and want assistance in how you can research the possibility of your relatives participating in this gigantic program. A lot of you have family land but have no clue about how it was obtained. Thus, I decided to do a little “homework” and pass it on to those of you who are curious. First of all, there were 30 states that were eligible for this land give away. They are: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California,
Harry C. Alford Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. If your family lived in one of these states then you can research this. Get on the Internet and go to: www.glorecords.blm.gov. On that page you will see an icon “research documents.” Click there and then input the accurate spelling of your ancestor’s name. I
went back after learning about my grandfather, Thomas Harry Alford. I then started researching other relatives. I eventually put in his father’s name, my great grandfather, Cicero Alford, entered the state and county and then clicked “search patents.” Bingo! It was another shocker!! Cicero Alford received a land grant also. On June 28, 1901, he received 163 acres which are located right next to the plot that his son received 15 years later. No one in my family seems to know about this. All we know is that we don’t have a “teaspoon” of that land today. I printed out the award document and filed it in my folder of sadness along with the other sad news. I will go back to Bossier Parish, LA courthouse soon and find out exactly how we lost that land. Another horror that I found out is that another great grandfather of mine, Harry Watkins, also had acquired 130 acres by direct purchase. He immediately borrowed $200 using this land as collateral. His balloon payment was due in two years. A funny thing happened right before the due date – he disappeared. Yes, Harry Watkins disappeared and hasn’t been seen since 1877. Thus, we
lost those 130 acres. My guess is that great grandpa got “whacked” for the land. In sum, my namesakes had a total of 456 acres. Today, we can only identify 40 of those acres. Keep in mind that this land is in the middle of the “Haynesville Shale” – one of the richest pockets of natural gas and oil in the United States. I and my relatives would have all been born millionaires just through possession of those 456 acres. What a tragedy! The above is a hard lesson that must be explained to my children and grandchildren. Never again will an Alford be so naïve as to let a legacy escape our descendants. How many of you have similar experiences? Go to the above website and see for yourselves. I also received the following from the National Park Service, as a result of last week’s article: “Homestead National Monument of America, a unit of the National Park Service located in Southeast Nebraska, is seeking individuals who participated in the Homestead Act of 1862 or are descendants of those who received land through the Homestead Law. One volunteer from each of America’s 30-Homestead States is
needed to carry their state’s flag for the Homestead Act’s 150th National Commemoration Event on Sunday, May 20, 2012 and then again for the Homestead Day’s Parade on Saturday, June 16, 2012.” I think if I would participate in the above I would march with tears streaming down my face. Those of you who are eligible can pursue this via: http://www-.nps .gov/home/planyourvisit/volunteers-needed-flag-carry.htm. Let me know what happens please. Now, those of you with land to hand down to your children. Please plan your estates wisely. Make sure the succession/transition goes smoothly without creditors, IRS and challengers trying to raise hell on the inheritors of your hard earned estates. As generations go by, we should be enjoying the American dream more and more. For some reason, Blacks have lagged in this process and we must devote more attention to it. Obama Doesn’t Get Credit for GM Turnaround By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist Three years ago, President Obama came to the rescue of Detroit’s struggling auto industry. His faith in that sector of the economy was rewarded recently when General Motors announced that it earned $7.6 billion in 2011, the largest annual income in its history. But just as was the case when Osama bin Laden was killed, President Obama gets only begrudging credit, if that. Leading up to Tuesday’s Republican primary in Michigan, native son Mitt Romney continued his blistering assault on Obama, including the president’s decision to rescue the auto industry. But it is clear that it was Romney who wanted to drive us down the wrong road. He wrote an op-ed in the New York Times on November 19, 2008 under the headline, “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt,” Romney said, “If General Motors, Ford and Chrysler get the bailout that their chief executives asked for yesterday, you can kiss the American automobile industry goodbye. It won’t go overnight, but its demise will be virtually guaranteed.” Instead of saying goodbye, the The Chicago Crusader
George E. Curry auto industry is again saying hello. According to the Center for Automobile Research, the federal rescue saved 1.3 million jobs at the Big Three and related businesses. Romney, whose father served as president and chairman of American Motors Corp. and later as governor of Michigan, had a hard time justifying his support for the Wall Street bailout but not one that would benefit Main Street or Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard. It is part of a larger problem Romney has trying to connect with everyday people. He receives more than $20 million a year from his investments but tries to portray himself as a typical American. After offering to bet Texas Gov. Rick Perry $10,000 during one Republican debate and calling $374,000
he earned in speaking fees “not very much” money, Romney on Friday demonstrated again his gift for gaffes. Speaking to an audience of 1,200 at Ford Field – nearly 64,000 fewer than usually populate the stadium for Detroit Lions football games – Romney said: “It feels good, being back in Michigan. You know, the trees are the right height. The streets are just right. I like the fact that most of the cars I see are Detroit-made automobiles.” Departing from his stump speech, Romney ran into trouble with the 99 percent of Americans who don’t share his economic status when he said, “I drive a Mustang and a Chevy pickup. Ann drives a couple of Cadillacs, actually.” Romney’s wife, Ann, keeps a Cadillac SRX luxury crossover at their Massachusetts residence and another one at their beach house in San Diego.” The cars sell from $35,485 to $54,525. Although the Cadillac SRX is designed in Detroit, it is assembled in Mexico. How many people do you know who own homes on opposite coasts with at least one luxury vehicle parked in each garage? Like Romney, the other three Republican candidates for president – Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul – opposed the plan to rescue Detroit. And neither Repub-

lican acknowledges that the auto rescue and Wall Street bailout were initiated by George W. Bush and continued by President Obama. Economist Paul Krugman noted at the time how difficult it was to obtain credit when Obama assumed office. “If the economy as a whole were in reasonably good shape and the credit markets were functioning, Chapter 11 [structured bankruptcy] would be the way to go. Under current circumstances, however, a default by GM would probably mean loss of ability to pay suppliers, which would mean liquidation – and that, in turn, would mean wiping out probably well over a million jobs at the worst possible moment.” Dean Baker, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington, D.C., agreed. He said in 2009, “Had General Motors and Chrysler been allowed to go into bankruptcy last fall, it would have quickly led to a chain of bankruptcies by a whole set of parts suppliers, all of whom are owed large amounts of money by these two companies. It is virtually certain that these companies and their suppliers would have been forced to shut down, because no one would have stepped forward to provide credit to operate Saturday, March 3, 2012
through bankruptcy without a government guarantee. Because Ford shares many of these suppliers with GM and Chrysler, the disruption to the supply chain almost certainly would have been enough to push Ford over the line as well.” GM and Chrysler received about $80 million from the Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP), about half of which has already been repaid. Ford had a line of credit that allowed it to operate without emergency federal assistance. In his “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt” op-ed, Romney said, “Detroit needs a turnaround, not a check.” Largely because of President Obama, Detroit received a check that paved the way for the turnaround. Now, we need Romney and his Republican opponents to do a turnaround and stop misrepresenting the role President Obama played in saving the auto industry. George E. Worrill’s World By Dr. Conrad W. Worrill
REPARATIONS AND TEACHING THE TRUTH (Dr. Conrad Worrill, National Chairman Emeritus of the National Black United Front (NBUF) located at 1809 East 71st Street, Suite 211, Chicago, Illinois, 60649, 773-493-0900, Fax# 773-493-9819, E-mail: nbufchic@sbcglobal.net, Web site: nbufront.org)
Dr. Conrad Worrill The movement to implement an appropriate African Centered Curriculum in predominately African in America inner city schools is critical to the on–going struggle for the liberation of African people in this country. We must continue to demand that the truth be taught as we continue to struggle to build the Reparations Movement in America. This movement has now become popularly known as the
African Centered Education Movement. Simple stated, it focuses on teaching the truth concerning the contributions of African people to the development of civilization in all subjects. We must heighten the dialogue concerning the importance of this movement, particularly as it relates to the question of reparations. Throughout the country, Africans in America are now becoming more sensitive to challenging the racist and white supremacist basis of the African public school curriculum. Through the National Black United Front (NBUF) and its world African Centered Education Plan, more Africans in America are beginning to see the need for massive curriculum change in the public schools of this country and the youth must take leadership in this project. There is not a day that goes by that someone does not call my office seeking information and help on how to start the process of changing the curriculum in their school. Parents are becoming more and more dissatisfied with what their children are being taught. They are also beginning to realize how much isn’t taught. It is clear that the public school system is the place where African America children receive a signifi-
cant portion of their view of the world and the history of the world. And, it also is a place where large numbers of African in America youth are miseducated under the system of white supremacy through the ideas and interpretation of history that is presented to them. Let’s turn to Carter G. Woodson’s great book, The Mis-Education of the Negro to get some further insights into this problem. Woodson observes “the so–called modern education, with all its defects, however, does others so much more good than it does the Negro, because it has been worked out in conformity to the needs of those who have enslaved and oppressed weaker people.” For example, Woodson says, “The philosophy and ethics resulting from our educational system have justified slavery, peonage, segregation and lynching. The oppressor has the right to exploit, to handicap, and to kill the oppressed.” Continuing on Woodson explains that, “No systematic effort toward change had been possible for, taught the same economics, history, philosophy, literature and religion which have established the present code of morals, the Negro’s mind has been brought under control of his oppressor.” Concluding on this point
Woodson states, “The problem of holding the Negro down, therefore, is easily solved. When you control a man’s thinking you do not have to worry about his actions.” Therefore, it is inspiring to see so many of our people waking up all over America and seeking the truth concerning the real contributions of African people to the world. Through study groups, conferences, Black talk radio, information network exchanges, African Americans are coming into a new African consciousness that seeks to reclaim the African mind and spirit. Through the Portland Model Baseline Essays, the work of the Kemetic Institute, the Association for the Study of Classical African Civilizations (ASCAC), and other writings and curriculum materials, Africans are becoming much more aware of the following points that must be incorporated into the curriculum. 1. Africa is the home of early man. 2. Africa is the cradle of modern man. 3. Africa is the cradle of civilization. 4. Africa once held a position as world teacher including the teacher for the western world. 5. There was and there still is a
continental wide unity in Africa and in the African communities around the world. 6. The first time Africans left the continent was not on slave ships. 7. Africa and African people all over the world have been under siege for nearly 2,000 years and only recently by European slavery and colonization. 8. There is an African Diaspora all over the world today. 9. African people have resisted domination on the continent and all over the world. 10. Even under slavery, colonization, segregation, apartheid, African people have made monumental contributions to arts, science and politics. These ten points, and others, have become the basis upon which we can judge the white supremacy public school curriculums content in textbooks and other learning materials. In other words, these points have become the basis of determining whether the truth is being taught in the public schools of this country. In seeking the truth about the Reparations Movement, join an organization that is working on this great, just, and mighty issue. The Truth will set us all free!
Global Salute to Nelson Mandela By Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr. NNPA Columnist All of humanity continues to be irreversibly uplifted by the indefatigable leadership and irrepressible spirit of Nelson Mandela. South Africa, the African National Congress (ANC), as well as all people throughout the world should pause with the greatest of respect while “Madiba” is still alive to express the highest tribute to him for a lifetime of achievement and commitment to worldwide freedom, justice, equality, empowerment and human dignity. African Americans and all African people in particular are so inspired by the perseverance and bold courageous example of Nelson Mandela who not only helped to lead the dismantlement of apartheid in South Africa, but also he continues today to stand at the age of 93 as a global role model and force for progressive
Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr. change, moral integrity and equal justice for all. In short, Mandela represents the best wisdom-consciousness for the affirmation of the oneness of humanity. and insight to lead South Africa nonviolently into a multiracial democracy and a growing emerging world economy. While we live in a world where millions of people on each continent are crying out louder and louder by the hour for an end to poverty, injustice and inequality, the Mandela-leadership example of social transformation that transcends race, ethnicity, tribe, religion, and political ideology needs to be highlighted and better understood. In fact the ANC continues to have a long tradition and legacy of leadership icons that first and foremost strive to represent the interests of the masses of African people who struggle for a better quality of life. It is so sad today that in many other places in the international community some rulers use violence and war to suppress the cries of the masses of the people for freedom, democracy and justice.
The recent news that Mandela was hospitalized should engender our prayers of support and concern for his health, as well as our meditation and reflections on his outstanding legacy of leadership. We are pleased that Mandela was just released from the hospital and is now recovering at home from hernia surgery. South African President Zuma reported that Mandela was stable and resting. Again our prayers are with him and his family. Here in the United States, the 2012 national elections season appears to be focused on who has the most money in politics over against the best leadership to offer the nation and global community progress on the critical issues. Of course America is not South Africa. That is not the point. The point is that while billions of dollars are being spent to hijack the democratic process in the United States, we should learn valuable lessons from how

Mandela and the ANC were guided successfully by principles of inclusive, participatory democracy verses the voter suppressive moves and exclusivist views of those who want a backwardly divided and regressive future America. Those of us in Occupy the Dream embrace both the dream of Martin Luther King Jr. and the democratic wisdom of Nelson Mandela. We will soon be in the south to recognize the anniversary of the voting rights struggle in Selma, Alabama with the annual retracing of the crossing of the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma for the march to Montgomery, Alabama that witnessed the horrible consequence of those who would go to any extent to deny the voting rights of Blacks and others. We have come a long way since the original Selma voting rights march back in 1965. (Continued on page 17) The Chicago Crusader

THE QUESTION IS STILL WHAT??? The boss sent me an email that I am still scratching my head about. I remotely remember asking the question about Fred Hampton Jr., but that was so long ago I had totally forgotten about it. Well, someone remembers as is testified by the following email. Please copy, post, distribute... Free ‘Em All! It has been brought to our attention that a question appeared in an issue of the Chicago Crusader Newspaper… “What is Fred Hampton Jr. the Chairman of?” The best answer to this question could be provided by those who have participated in various campaigns, demonstrations, attended events where he has been a speaker, where
he has intervened when your child(ren) were under attack either at their school or the police department – both agents of the state. Were you at the Field Museum when Chairman Fred & POCC “politicized” Mos Def & Talib Kweli, and the audience about the POCC’s Code of Culture which laid out the responsibility of artists to at minimum mention the case of political prisoners in the city in which the artists were performing? Were you at the HIP Hop Summit at the UIC Pavilion when then state senatorial candidate Barack Obama had POCC’s African AntiTerrorism Bill put in his hand and photographed world-wide? Were you there when Chairman Fred Jr. & the POCC/BPPC organized hundreds in the midst of police terrorism to protest and demand justice in the murders of Derion Albert at Fenger High School where POCC solidly placed the responsibility for his murder in the hands of the CPS & the CPD with Renaissance 2010 and other policies put in place by the City of Chicago and the infamous Daley Machine; Aaron Harrison murdered by police on the west side of Chicago; Darryl Hamilton who
was murdered in a south east side school yard and the video tape “disappeared” from the cameras focused on the area where he was brutally murdered by police; the young man Sharron P-Ron Grant who was shot by Chicago Police gangland style on 59th & Sangamon; and too many other cases to list. Ask the father of Ellis Woodland Jr. - the 12 year old young boy shot by Chicago Police – who Chairman Fred Hampton Jr. and the POCC/BPPC is, when the police wouldn’t allow the father to see his son when he was in the north side hospital recovering from shots received from the Chicago Police. Ask Bernadette Devlin a freedom fighter in Ireland, and the young man in Ireland about the murder of his father and the support of Chairman Fred & POCC/BPPC, and Chairman Fred being interviewed by the leading newspaper while in Ireland addressing that case among other issues. Ask Pam Africa about Chairman Fred & POCC/BPPC’s never ending support of Mumia Abu Jamal and the fight for his freedom; Chairman Fred Jr. never having been to Paris, France, nor could he speak French, and Chairman Fred found the “hood” and mobilized support around Mumia and the rampant police terrorism that the African community experiences there. Ask the people in Brazil, in the favelas about Chairman Fred Jr. & POCC/BPPC’s. Ask Ralph Poynter about the support of Chairman Fred Jr. speaking in New York this week to build sup-
port around the case of Attorney Lynn Stewart, truly one of the few People’s Attorneys locked up and framed on bogus charges. Ask any number of political prisoners about the work Chairman Fred Jr. & POCC/BPPC has done around their cases. Ask the pig agent who busted a sister’s jaw and knocked her teeth out at a south side club, the Negro League on east 43rd Street. and she went outside to tell the pigs who were chatting it up with the pig agent and they did nothing about her injuries or complaint…ask the same pig agent who later mysteriously slid down the bar and fell to the floor at a north side club about Chairman Fred Jr. (See Chairman Fred Responds to State Slander.) Ask the hundreds of Black People and others who jammed city hall in the demand and mobilization around naming a street “Chairman Fred Hampton Way.” Do you want to write a testimony on behalf of someone you know who received free food bags at the POCC/BPPC Food Give Away program; and/or free clothing & shoes at the POCC/BPPC Clothing Give Away program. If the Crusader doesn’t know who Chairman Fred Hampton Jr. is and what he is the Chairman of…they better ask somebody! Consumers welcome CFPB scrutiny of bank overdraft practices By Charlene Crowell
CFPB Roundtable in New York addresses practices; Advocates urge end to bank payday lending as well When the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau visited New York City on February 22, a roundtable discussion with bankers and consumer advocates began a day of focused discussion of bank products that cost customers billions per year in unfair fees. In his opening remarks, CFPB Director Richard Cordray called for a “candid discussion” and noted how less than 10 percent of checking account customers bear the brunt of more than 80 percent of all overdraft fees charged by banks. Director Cordray announced a new initiative wherein the agency will examine the practice of reordering customer transactions to boost overdraft fees. CFPB will also look at disclosures and marketing, particularly with an eye toward impact on the low-income and young consumers. Roundtable participant Rebecca Borne, senior policy counsel with the Center for Responsible Lend-

ing, advised that overdraft fees are the number one reason bank customers lose their checking accounts. “We are so pleased that there is finally a regulator, the CFPB, whose primary responsibility and commitment is to ensuring that reasonable rules of the road are in place to reform harmful and reck-
less financial practices” said Borne. “Today’s typical bank overdraft practices remain in dire need of that reform.” Sarah Ludwig, executive director of the New-York based Neighborhood Economic Development Advocacy Project, drew a connection between costly overdraft fees and the emergence of bank payday

loans. As lenders sat nearby, Ms. Ludwig presented a letter with signatures from more than 250 national, state and local organizations from across the country calling for immediate federal action to stop bank payday loans. The list of supporters included representatives of religious, civil rights, labor, higher education, fair housing, consumers and community activists. Together, these organizations warned against the looming prospect of overdraft fees worsening consumer financial circumstances once bank payday loans are made. The letter and its full list of signers is available at: http://rspnsb.li/vdfUSO.4 In part the letter advised, “Ultimately, payday loans erode the assets of bank customers and, rather than promote savings, make checking accounts unsafe for many customers. They lead to uncollected debt, bank account closures, and greater numbers of unbanked Americans. All of these outcomes are inconsistent with consumer protection and harm the safety and soundness of financial institutions.” The letter was also mailed to three other federal regulators: Fed-

eral Reserve, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. Currently, Wells Fargo Bank, US Bank, Fifth Third Bank and Regions Bank use a system previously developed by storefront payday lenders. As banks market the loan as a short-term cash advance for checking account customers, the predatory product typically leads to a long-term cycle of high-cost debt – just like a storefront payday loan. Banks offering payday loans repay themselves first. The entire loan and its accompanying fee are taken directly from the account as soon as a customer’s paycheck or benefits check is deposited. Typically, banks charge $10 per hundred borrowed; with an average loan of only 10 days, the annual percentage rate for bank payday loans is 365 percent. According to research the Center for Responsible Lending, bank payday borrowers are in debt an average 175 days of the year. Social Security recipients are especially vulnerable, making up one quarter of bank payday (Continued on page 17)

GOOD DEEDS BY ELAINE BOWEN, MSJ Leading up to the opening of Tyler Perry’s Good Deeds, radio stations have held contests that ask people to email their good deeds in for prize consideration. Even Perry himself has been credited with doing a good deed or two during his promotional tour for the movie. In the movie, Perry also does a good deed, by helping Thandie Newton, who plays a janitor named Lindsey who has an adorable young daughter named Ariel. The two have been evicted from their home, after Lindsay has fallen on hard times. She meets Perry, who plays Wesley Deeds, the heir to a computer software conglomerate who pretty much lives life by the same script. Deeds is scheduled to marry Natalie, the perfect woman who is played by Gabrielle Union. He has the perfect mother, played by Phylicia Rashad. Gabrielle’s mother in Good Deeds is played by the iconic Black model Beverly Johnson. But Deeds’ life is about to be uprooted, once he becomes involved with trying to help Lindsey and Ariel, after he discovers them sleeping in their car, and the child welfare agency takes Ariel away from Lindsay. Deeds offers them a place to stay in one of his company’s luxury apartments. He does this behind Gabrielle’s back, but soon he is discovered, and his jealous, self-destructive brother Walter, played by
BEVERLY JOHNSON, Phylicia Rashad and Gabrielle Union discuss wedding plans. Brian White, is hell bent on letting everyone know that Deeds isn’t as wholesome as he would have everyone believe. There is animosity between Wesley and Walter, because Walter feels that he should have been chosen to run the company, upon their father’s death. Walter is struggling with substance abuse issues and is basically being overseen by Wesley, at their mother’s request. Walter is really confounded by the fact that when they both first met Lindsey, she was nearly cursing them out in the company parking lot and now she and Wesley seem to be good friends. During the course of the movie, Natalie, Wesley and Lindsey discover much about themselves that changes their outlook and shakes the core of the decisions and

With a staggering 17 nominations and three wins under her belt, Meryl is without a doubt the greatest actress in the history of motion pictures. Now all she needs is one more win and she’ll tie Katherine Hepburn for the most Oscar wins (Hepburn has four!). Also congratulations are in order for Octavia Spencer who won her first Oscar in the Supporting Actress category for her performance in The Help. Although Billy Crystal did a good job as host, I still found myself wondering what the show would have been like if Eddie Murphy had remained in the role of Host.....Probably a thousand times better. Billy Crystal is a good comedian, but I think Murphy would have knocked it “out the park.” And speaking of comediennes, the funny moments of the entire telecast were the JC Penny commercials featuring Ellen DeGeneres. Now, that was entertainment!

dreams they had previously made and envisioned. Walter also has a comeuppance moment, where he is basically given another chance to make his mother proud. Good Deeds is a nice, predictable movie, with Newton playing a gruff, hard-working, struggling single mother, and Perry playing a nice, successful businessman who just happens to want to give back some of the riches to which he has grown accustomed. Lindsey’s daughter Ariel is a beautiful girl with so much personality, who plays the role of a child living on the fringes with vulnerability, sadness and anxiety. In the end, Good Deeds will teach you that even all the money in the world can’t buy you happiness. Good Deeds is playing in theaters everywhere.

Lyric Opera of Chicago commissions world premiere Anthony Freud, general director of Lyric Opera of Chicago, today announced details of its latest world premiere. Bel Canto, by young Peruvian composer Jimmy López, with libretto by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Nilo Cruz, is based on the best-selling novel by Ann Patchett. To premiere in Lyric’s 2015-16 season, the new opera will be conducted by Lyric music director Sir Andrew Davis and directed by Stephen Wadsworth. Both the 2001 book and the new opera are inspired by the Lima Crisis of 1996-97, when members of a revolutionary movement in Peru held

As Lyric’s creative consultant, Renée Fleming is curator for this world premiere, which is a keystone of the company’s Renée Fleming Initiative. Fleming selected the book Bel Canto as the subject for the commission because she was moved by it and found it “opera-worthy. Central to the story is the fictional famed American soprano, Roxanne Coss, who will be portrayed by Australianborn American soprano Danielle de Niese. Like the novel, the opera will explore the tensions and unexpected alliances that develop when a group of culturally disparate strangers – the terrorists and their hostages – are confined in close quarters for months. “Bel Canto” will be the seventh world-premiere opera that Lyric Opera of Chicago has commissioned for its main stage since 1961. Fleming researched more than a hundred composers for the commission, coming up with a short list that she and Sir Andrew Davis further distilled in consultation with Anthony Freud. The composer they chose, Jimmy López, has a unique intimacy with the story’s setting and source material that will help to inform his work. In pairing López with Wadsworth, who has directed premieres of operas by composers such as Peter Lieberson and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Fleming and Davis were eager to give the first-time opera composer an experienced collaborator for meeting the challenge of tak-

ing the opera from score to stage. Jimmy Lopez holds a master of music degree from Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland and is a Ph.D. candidate at University of California at Berkeley. Born in Lima in 1978, López has strong memories of the 1996-97 hostage crisis there, which was covered extensively by local and international media. The bonding between terrorists and hostages was an example of “inverted Stockholm syndrome,” he said. “The terrorists started falling in love with the hostages. Many of the terrorists were only teenagers. They looked up to the hostages as adult, educated, cultured people who spoke many languages.” “Bel Canto” will be the first opera libretto by Nilo Cruz who states that creating the libretto seems a natural fit because he comes from a very musical country. The Cuba-born playwright added, “Basically we are born singing and dancing.” Information regarding further casting, production design, and sponsorship for “Bel Canto” will be announced at a later date.

Indoor Farmers Market at Sixth Grace Presbyterian Church The food desert is becoming the home to a calming oasis Saturday, March 10 when Sixth Grace Presbyterian Church, 600 East 35th Street joins with Faith in Place an interfaith environmental organization to bring fresh produce, milled flour, soap, cheese and other fine items to the Bronzeville church and community. Sharon Harris, an elder at Sixth Grace and the Green Ministry moderator is leading this effort. “We have been working with Faith in Place to help bring about an awareness for churches to go green,” Harris said. Faith in Place has been educating people about the importance of living healthier by changing how energy is used daily. Since 1999 the organization has worked with faith groups providing churches with tools to reflect upon the responsibilities of loving one another and caring for the creation that sustains all life. Also according to its mission the organization works to “integrate the teachings of faith into practice and work together for a just and sustainable future.” Sixth Grace is one of 800 congregations in Illinois, which has partnered with Faith in Place to accomplish understanding issues of ecology and economy as it relates to Creation and that these issues are at the forefront of social justice. Sixth Grace is just one of four churches on the south side participating in The Indoor Farmers Market. Vernon Park Church of God on 90th and Stony Island will host the market on Saturday, March 3 followed by Sixth Grace’s event closing with the March 31 market held at Beverly Unitarian Church at 103rd and Longwood. “This is the first farmers market event for Sixth Grace,” Harris remarked. “We have been partners with Faith in Place for a few years through our youth group.” Elder Clifton Wilkes and other
youth leaders have mentored the members of Sixth Grace Presbyterian Church’s Barber Shop Rap Youth Group in Sixth Grace’s first collaboration with Faith in Place as they performed community service for members of the congregation and the community. Harris stated “Stewardship of the earth over which man has been given dominion and reducing our carbon footprint is stressed by bringing awareness about the benefits of weatherization, performing installation demonstrations, as well as reviewing the content of weatherization kits provided by the Chicago Department of Energy.” The youth serviced the homes of 180 Chicago residents in 2010 and 250 residents in 2011. Sixth Grace Green Ministry Team, lead by Harris, has invited the Barber Shop Rap Youth to be on hand to assist with the Farmers Market. The youth will have the opportunity to learn about and share with the community the importance of supporting local farmers and the importance of making wise food choices. Sixth Grace Presbyterian Church looks forward to sharing the efforts of our Green Ministry with our congregation, the community and youth as we all become more environmentally aware and active participants in the green economy. Many vendors sell meats, cheeses, eggs and honey from locally raised animals or produce grown on local farms (within 250 miles of Chicago). Others sell value-added products like salsa, baked goods, jam and soap. At least 25% of the ingredients in each value-added product are locally grown. NEWS Embattled funeral home director says he has done nothing illegal but also thinks the community must takeout insurance policies on loved ones. “Unfortunately this is one of the effects of being uninsured; it hurt one of our own Black business in this instance,” Davis said. “We want to help our community understand the need to be insured. We want to develop wealth in our community. The best way to do it is to have some protection so that when something happens, you leave something to your family other than ‘poppa was a rolling stone and when he died all he left me was alone,’” said Davis, quoting lyrics from the famous Temptations song. Carter said under the advice of his attorney he would not speak about the Feb. 27 lawsuit. Tamika Richardson filed the suit alleging her mother’s remains were not cremated by Carter Funeral Chapels after the family hired them in January. In the meantime several employees and clergymen are coming to Carter’s defense. Reverend Harvey Richardson said he supports Carter and the funeral chapel because of the services they have provided for many of his congregation in dire times. “Mr. Carter has been nothing but a gentleman and respectful to every-
heard about his problems and performed a funeral for one of Carter’s customers for free. “I am here for him and I want him and everyone else to know that,” said Leak. On Feb. 21, Chicago police responding to a call of a possible breakin, found three men inside, two current workers and one former employee. City inspectors ordered nine bodies awaiting burial in the mortuary to be transferred after the building was found to have no working electricity or heat. Carter’s license as a funeral director and embalmer has been suspended since 2008, but that does not prevent him from owning the business. Carter said he was disappointed with the rumors and allegations that were being broadcast by the media about the situation. He said there were never any human bones found on the roof of his business and the bodies were kept in good condition inside the facility despite some being there for up to five weeks. He also called allegations there is a rodent infestation as false. He said much of what was reported last week and the public’s reaction is reasonable given the climate that has been created
with the recent scandal at Burr Oak Cemetery and the current problem at the Cook County morgue where bodies were found stacked on top of one another. “I fully understand the roles those incidents have played into why there was such a reaction to my situation here,” Carter said. “I have a family too. But there was never any mistreatment of bodies. If there had been, I would have been in jail with a $250,000 bond.” Carter said the problem is a bad economy along with doctors who take their time in signing death certificates. He and employees say their hands are often tied because they cannot perform services until the death certificate is signed. Despite the hardships he is facing, he sees this situation as a “watershed moment” where a lot of good can come from it if the public and media pressures state legislators to pass some laws. “According to the law they are under no timeframe whatsoever besides their own moral consciousness to sign death certificates,” Carter said. “They put all of us funeral directors in an untenable situation. On average it has been taking eight days for them to respond to our begging after the actual death. With the elections
coming in less than a month, I think this is a chance to really do some good.” He said his problems with ComEd are embarrassing but added many businesses and citizens are having trouble paying their bill. According to ComEd, the business owes more than $50,000. Carter said the bill has grown over the last five years as the economy took a downturn. He said he had trouble paying the bill because in part of families who have loved ones without life insurance and could not afford to pay him for services and burial costs. “That’s something that just comes with running this type of business in a community where people are struggling financially,” Carter said. “I’m helping families that others refused to help. It is not uncommon for hats to be passed at funerals to help defray the expenses.” U.S. Representative Danny K. Davis (D-7) said he understands Carter’s plight, even though he does not know all the details that brought him to this situation. The West Side Democrat has been a longtime advocate for life insurance in the community. Davis agrees that doctors must speed up the process by signing death certificates in a timely manner,

one I have ever brought through this business,” Richardson said. “He has kept the door open for many families when the door was closed in other places. He and this chapel have done a good service for this community.” Tony Perkins’ voice cracked with emotion when he spoke about his employer. Perkins is one of several employees charged with getting signatures from doctors on death certificates. He told of driving to hospitals and a doctor’s offices as far away as suburban Libertyville just to get a signature. “I’m here to stand up and fight for my boss Harry Carter because he has done nothing wrong,” Perkins said. Another employee, Donald Baker Jr. said he was appalled last week with what was being reported. He said the Carter family has been in business for over 50 years and has supported so many other organizations in the community like Boy Scouts and Little League. “Nobody talked about the good things this family has done and the malicious allegations that were made were offensive to me personally as a person who works here,” Baker said. National Medal of Arts awarded to GSU Sculpture Park Artist (Continued from page 10) Obama awarded the medal to Mark di Suvero, whose towering “Yes! For Lady Day” at the NMSP is recognized as a landmark of contemporary sculpture. The National Medal of Arts is a White House initiative managed by the National Endowment for the Arts. Each year, the NEA organizes and oversees the medal nomination process and notifies artists of their selection to receive a medal. “Martin Puryear transforms mundane and utilitarian materials – wood, stone, and metal – into evocative talismans that quietly and powerfully explore issues of history, culture, and identity,” the NEA citation states. “His unwavering commitment to manual skill and traditional building materials offer a seductive alternative to our increasingly digital world.” Puryear is one of seven recipients of this year’s award; other honorees include painter and printmaker Will Barnett, poet and author Rita Dove, actor Al Pacino, arts patron and philan-
thropist Emily Rauh Pulitzer, singer and songwriter Mel Tillis, classical pianist Andre Watts, and the United Service Organizations (USO). Bodark Arc was commissioned by NMSP and the GSU Foundation, and installed in 1982. Puryear used a number of materials to create the artwork, including earth, wood, Osage orange trees, asphalt, stone, and cast bronze. Bodark Arc is an example of Land Art, so large that it can by fully appreciated only by viewing it from the air. In Bodark Arc, Puryear orchestrates landscape and scale along with personal and cultural references, offering a site for quiet reflection that reveals itself piece by piece. The Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park is located at Governors State University’s main campus in University Park. The park is free of charge and open from dawn to dusk 365 days a year. Global Salute to Nelson Mandela (Continued from page 6) But we must renew our vigor and commitment to achieve more progress toward making our democracy more equal and just. Income inequality is increasing the ranks of those in poverty. We need a Constitutional Amendment to get money out of politics in America. We should work to build a global movement for economic justice and equality. Thank God for Mandela. When we last had the opportunity to meet with him in person in Maputo several years ago, Mandela encouraged us to help increase worldwide awareness that
Africa needs empowerment through education, training, employment and economic development. We salute Nelson Mandela for all that he continues to do to make Africa and the world a better place. OVER 200 RECENTLY attended “Seen & Heard: Maryland’s Civil Rights Era in Photographs and Oral Histories” at the Maryland Historical Society in Baltimore. The panel discussion focused on civil rights protests in Baltimore from the 1930s thru the 1950s. This was long before most of America was aware of the civil rights movement, which received national attention in the 1960s. One of the members of the audience was Esther McCready (with microphone) who was the first African American to gain entry to the University of Maryland School of Nursing in 1950. Her case was taken to the Court of Appeals and argued successfully by Thurgood Marshall and Donald Murray. Marshall would later become the first Black Supreme Court Justice. One of the panelists, Larry Gibson (second from left), called McCready to the podium and told her story. McCready added, “On my first day in Nursing School, I was standing by the elevator and this R.N. said, ‘If you don’t pray to God, you won’t get out of here, because nobody here is supporting you.’ I looked her right in the eye and I said, ‘If God intends for me to get out of here, nobody can stop me,’ She said to me later that when I said that, she knew I was going to be all right. We became friends.”

I’m hoping this will be a life-changing experience for Isis.” Reid said he and his wife have told all of their children they will support them 110 percent in whatever they choose to do with their life. He is proud of his daughter for taking the initiative to better herself. “I’m happy for her because she has a mind of her own sometimes,” Reid said. “You ask her to do one thing and she’ll do a completely different project. So I was happily surprised to hear she applied and the entire family is just as excited as she is.” Davis’ Kenwood Academy family is proud of her as well. Davis was home-schooled for two years before enrolling at Kenwood last year. Assistant Principal Karen Calloway described Davis as a “very spirited and socially conscious student” who sits at the same table with the same set of friends at lunch every day. Calloway said Davis is also not afraid to tell other students who are bringing negative energy around her to move away because she is concerned about how she is perceived as it relates to proper behavior in public. “You don’t really find that a lot
