By J. Coyden Palmer Over a week ago, the construction at the site of a planned charter school in Chatham stopped abruptly after the bank financing the project pulled out amidst unknown concerns, the Crusader has learned. The Concept Charter School, in partnership with the Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church’s Legacy Project, is the subject of a federal criminal investigation the Crusader reported two weeks ago. Last month, the FBI raided 19 sites owned by Concept, based in suburban Des Plaines. A law enforcement source told the Crusader on July 7, that the wide-ranging investigation relates to Concept’s officials. A person, who did not want to be identified on the site at 8527 Lafayette, told the Crusader because construction has stopped, the school will not open on Aug. 14 as originally planned. Alderman Howard Brookins (21) later confirmed that saying he had no idea if or when the school would open at all, adding he is not aware of any contingency plan for the students currently enrolled. The Crusader obtained exclusive photos from inside the building, showing sewage drains protruding from the ground, no floors, ceilings or other essential elements

Foreclosure help for elderly is a scam By Mike Volpe Scammers have been targeting the elderly and desperate in Chicago with outlandish claims about saving homes from foreclosure, the Chicago Crusader has learned. In an interview with the Crusader, John Mirkovic Director of Communications for the Cook County Recorder of Deeds stated that Karen Yarbrough, the Cook County Recorder of Deeds, is currently investigating a number of incidents of individuals claiming to be able to subvert foreclosure law by using so-called “sovereignty” to prey on desperate individuals who are in the process of foreclosure. These individuals claim to be members of the Moorish Science Temple of America (MSTA), but Mirkovic warned that this scam is not being sanctioned by the group itself, but is being perpetrated by con artists
and “rogue” individuals. Mirkovic called individuals who perpetuate these scams as “transients”—individuals who pass through Chicago temporarily and specifically to try and make money using this scam. Robert Hill-Bey, a spokesperson in Chicago for the MSTA, didn’t respond to a phone call for comment. Mirkovic stated that these scammers target areas with a large amount of foreclosure activities and use a variety of marketing techniques, including direct mail, advertisements on street signs, and knocking on doors to identify targets. Once an individual is identified, the scammers claim to be members of the (Continued on page 3)

Brookins and constituents meet in heated exchange By J. Coyden Palmer Inside a small conference room on the South Side July 8, Ald. Howard Brookins met with about a dozen angry community members who are upset that neighborhood public schools are being underfunded in the ward. After a protest outside Brookins’ office at 9011 S. Ashland organized by the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU), a small group was allowed in to meet with Brookins and voice their concerns. For 45 minutes the sometimes contentious meeting ensued with the demonstrators demanding Brookins sign a pledge stating he would withdraw his support from the controversial Concept charter school and become an advocate for neighborhood schools. The alderman refused. “I won’t sign this pledge now until I do a thorough investigation,” Brookins responded. Gregory Clements is the secretary for Gresham Parents Students and Community United for Change. He is also a leader with the Cub Scout pack that was based out of Gresham School. He said Gresham had both a science lab and a library with no teacher, in addition to no music or art
programs and physical education only part time. “We must register people to vote so we can get an elected school board. That is our only hope of changing things,” Clements believes. Others complained about the lack of options in the ward and compared it to a rigged poker game. CTU member Shoneice Reynolds went toe-to-toe with Brookins over the options parents have for high school students. Brookins contends the charter schools are an option and that there are people in his ward who want them there. But Reynolds countered that if you disinvest in all of the neighborhood schools and do not provide programs like art, music and computer technology, there really is not much of a choice. “After canvassing the community and speaking with residents they are very disappointed that their neighborhood high school is not Calumet anymore,” said Shoneice Reynolds. “Those students have to go all the way to Hirsch, outside of this community to go to a neighborhood public high school. That is not fair to them.” The former Calumet high school, located at 81st and May, is now a

There is no high school in the 21st Ward that is not either selective enrollment, private or a charter school, the Crusader discovered. Herb Singleton, a community outreach worker for the CTU, said there are currently a number of unfilled positions in schools within the 21st
Ward. According to the CTU, nine schools in the 21st ward do not have a music teacher; 12 schools are without a librarian and 14 schools with computer labs, but who do not have a computer science teacher. “Technology runs education,” said Singleton, who has three master’s degrees and has taught within the CPS system for over 20 years. “It’s criminal, because all of the newest pro-
grams come through technology.” Latisa Kindred was laid off this week from her position as the electrical shop teacher at Simeon Vocational Career Academy. With the program eliminated, there now is no school within the CPS system that offers electrical shop, according to CTU. Kindred said she is beyond disappointed in CPS’ decision. Reached via phone July 8, Townsell agreed to an interview, but asked to be emailed questions. He never responded to any of the Crusader’s questions. The Crusader also reached out to the Chicago Public Schools; the CPS board voted in favor of Concept getting two new schools this fall. Last month, the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) asked the Board of Education to suspend Concept’s charter license. The Crusader asked three questions to the CPS communications office, which handles press inquiries: Why has construction stopped at the site? Is CPS CEO Dr. Barbara Byrd-Bennett aware of the stoppage? What is CPS doing as a backup plan for the affected students and their parents who have already been accepted to the school during a June lottery? CPS spokesperson Joel Hood responded via email stating, “CPS is monitoring the situation; however, further comment cannot be provided at this time.” Alderman Roderick Sawyer (6th), whose ward borders the location of Concept site, said he originally supported the school based on Brookins’ recommendation. Sawyer told the 2

He added that a trend he is seeing across the nation: financial institutions withdrawing support from charter entities. “As things progress and the financial malfeasance of numerous charter operators across the country come to light, the financers of these entities are getting nervous,” Potter continued. “You see that with Standard and Poor’s downgrading their rating bonds for charter schools…there are concerns as these entities are exposed for engaging in corruption as it puts their financers at a risk for liability. It also shows the wrong values are determining public policy. It’s pretty backwards in terms of how things are being prioritized and how decisions are made by CPS.” The Crusader also learned this week through a confidential source that if the school cannot be opened at the current site, Jenkins has begun inquiring about possibly moving the school to Fellowship’s current location at 45th and Princeton. Fellowship’s new church home will be at the Lafayette site along with retail stores, according to Brookins. If the school does not open this year as planned, Fellowship would lose more than a half a million dollars in leasing fees from Concept. Sources tell the Crusader Fellowship has already invested $2 million into the project.

Groundbreaking ceremony set for community center By Wendell Hutson A groundbreaking ceremony is planned for a second major community center on the city’s Far South Side. Ninth Ward Alderman Anthony Beale said a 10 a.m. July 26 groundbreaking is set for the $15 million, 138,000-square-foot Pullman Center at 104th Street and Woodlawn Avenue. The center is expected to open in September 2015. “This is a game-changer all-day long because of what it will do for the development of kids in the area,” said Beale. “It’s going to be a place that cultivates smarter and professional caliber athletes who may not have access to sports training for outdoors sports for five or six months a year.” In 2012, the Salvation Army opened the Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center at 1250 W. 119th St. The 167,000 square-foot center boasts a water park, basketball courts, game room and a 600-seat auditorium. According to Beale, the Pullman Center would provide a climate controlled sports and entertain-
ment facility based on a family atmosphere for “fun, recreation, exercise and athletic advancement.” He added that the project is something long overdue for the South Side and hopes to have it up and running in the next four years. On a 12-acre parcel of land donated to Chicago Neighborhood Initiative (CNI) organization by U.S. Bank, the center will be located in Pullman Park development, south of Olive-Harvey College, 10001 S. Woodlawn Ave., and would serve as a complement to the continuing revitalization of the Pullman neighborhood, explained David Doig, president of CNI. The Pullman neighborhood on the city’s Far South Side is a location occupied by many new manufacturing companies that provide services to rehabbed homes. “The Pullman Park development has already brought Walmart, Planet Fitness, Ross Dress for Less, and ecofriendly soap maker, Method, to the former Ryerson Steel property,” said Doig. “The center is addressing a community need for indoor recreational space. Entries should be sent to public.affairs@mwrd.org. The boats, both dedicated to trash collection, will join two other 28foot pontoons that are collecting floatable items along the Chicago Area Waterways (CAW). MSTA, which they say is a sovereign group not governed by U.S. foreclosure laws, Mirkovic noted. The con artists then convince the individual to do a quit-claim deed and transfer the property to the group. A quit-claim deed is a legal instrument by which the owner of a piece of real estate property transfers any interest to a recipient. Mirkovic told the Crusader that many of these con artists use this scam as one of a number of scams and are likely to move on to another part of the country using cons which have nothing to do with the Moorish Science Temple. In June, Chicago Sun-Times columnist, Mark Brown identified one victim: “One fellow told me about his elderly father, who was convinced that if he turned over his home to the group, it would allow him to stop the bank from foreclosing. Now, the 74year-old is facing eviction.” According to publicly available information from the Cook County Recorder of Deeds, the MSTA is involved in more than 200 real estate transactions, but Mirkovic noted that the group

files all sorts of things and these scams are just one small part of their legal filings. Karen Yarbrough, according to Brown’s column, was the target of a different scam in which another individual claiming to be a member of the MSTA was living in a property she owned and filed paperwork with the Cook County Recorder of Deeds for a number of adjacent properties as well. That particular scam mirrors others brought by people also claiming to be part of the group in other parts of the country. In 2011, an article in the Mecklenburg Times in North Carolina identified a nationwide epidemic. “In San Bernardino County, CA, police arrested a man and woman in February for moving into a home they claimed ownership of through an illegitimate deed. Police said the couple attempted to cloud up the deed’s title history by claiming to have given the home to the MSTA, which in turn gave the property back to the couple, according to news reports. “Similar incidents have been reported in Hampton, VA. A June 18, 2010, posting on williamsburgsrealestate.com warns of ‘a re-
cent incident where an organization using the name the MSTA has illegally entered a home listed for sale, changed the locks and taken over the premises,’” according to The Times. The Moorish Science Temple of America is a religion founded in the early part of the 20th century by Timothy Drew, who changed his name to the Prophet Drew Ali. The religion was founded as an offshoot to Islam. The MSTA name has been used by individuals of the so-called sovereign citizens’ movement in a number of legal filings. The sovereign citizens’ movement claims that certain citizens of the USA have sovereignty over federal law and are only governed by common law. Wesley Snipes attempted to use this argument to avoid paying millions in back income taxes. He was sentenced to three years in jail and was released in April 2013. The MSTA officials have repeatedly disavowed when individuals claim to use their name for this argument. The MSTA, is referred to “as a radical and subversive fringe groups” in an Associated Press article in 2011 on the trend.

EDITORIAL ARE BLACKS RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN CONDITION? Recently, The Pew Research Center released a report revealing that a wide majority of Americans believe that “Blacks who can’t get ahead are responsible for their own condition,” and that there is a popular perception among Americans that the consequences of discrimination ended with Jim Crow. This is a majority view of some types of liberals, according to an online Vox article offered by Max Fisher. And over 80% of conservatives say that they agree that “Blacks who can’t get ahead are mostly responsible for their own condition,” while just seven percent say that, “Racial discrimination is the main reason why many Black people can’t get ahead these days.” Interestingly, as this study comes to light, an op-ed item appeared in The West View News, a monthly paper in New York’s West Village with a circulation of around 20,000, from author James Lincoln Collier titled “N----r in the White House.” This is actually a pro-Obama piece in which Collier argues that, “far right voters hate Obama because he is black.” The title of the op-ed piece was of questionable taste and, of course, has received some backlash, but it proves the point that there has been a blatant disrespect of Barack Obama, the first African American president of the United States. Because of Obama’s election to the presidency, and because many Blacks no longer are living under overt Jim Crow conditions, it is easy for people, especially those who want to believe that there is a level playing field in America, that the lack of progress demonstrated by a large number of Blacks is due to their own fault. The truth of the matter is that Jim Crow didn’t cease to exist; he just changed form and became invisible. He is cloaked in the PTSD (Post-Traumatic Slavery Disorder) experienced by a large number of Black people. He is seen in depressed neighborhoods where unemployment is high and where young, disenfranchised Blacks are killing each other; he is seen in studies that hint at a lack of self-esteem among many Blacks; and he is seen in the hopelessness evidenced by those who have given up and have stopped trying to better their situations, often resorting to illicit “pharmaceuticals” for self-treatment. Some scientists have come to the conclusion that the experiences that a human being has can be transferred to their progeny through their DNA. Since it is true that every person carries within them the DNA of all of their ancestors, it might be feasible to conclude that the actual experience of slavery and post-slavery traumas are genetically encoded in the DNA of many Black people, and that it impacts their behavior today. This is a controversial opinion, but the lack of acceptance of this view by some conservatives just might be the result of biases transferred genetically by their white supremacist ancestors. The argument that Blacks are responsible for their own failure is being highlighted during a time where a discussion of reparations is on the ascendancy. Is this just a coincidence? Whether it is or isn’t, it serves to bolster the argument against reparations among those who are predisposed to oppose them. Be this as it may, white supremacy is definitely alive and well and has had an adverse impact on Black Americans and on people of color all across the globe. To deny this is to be disingenuous. Now, though it is true that there are great obstacles against Black progress, it is also true that many Blacks have found a way to succeed. What this means is that there is a way out, but it would have to occur with the cooperation of the entire Black community in order to help those who are traumatized and therefore, ineffective rise to greater heights. This should definitely be one of our goals, but it does not let America off the hook for the maltreatment of an entire group of people who are being blamed by a majority of conservative respondents of the Pew Research study for their own maltreatment by America! A luta continua.
What is going on with Rev. Charles Jenkins personally and professionally puts me in the mind of a saying my grandmother used to use when I was a child. More than once in my young mind I thought I had accomplished something great or that no other kid had done. I would boast about it to my grandmother and she would say, “don’t fly too high little bird you got to come down to eat.” It took me several decades to understand what she meant. We witnessed Rev. Jenkins deliver some mighty words when Mayor Emanuel had his inauguration. Then I wondered if the preacher realized that the mayor needed him (or any other up-and-coming Black face) more than he needed the mayor. But Jenkins seemed to enjoy the rarified air. Then came the rich Republicans giving him that huge factory by the Dan Ryan. To me he seemed to be too old not to recognize nobody, especially someone who doesn’t know you just gives you anything. The building put him in partnership with a charter school operation that we are finding out now isn’t all on the up and up. Let’s not even go into detail about his naked picture going viral. Seems like the preacher has simply strayed away from his roots. Looks like he did fly too high, and

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Don’t fly too high little bird Dear Editor:
now he has to come down to eat. He has to do that with us every day folks. His Grammy awards, expensive suits and rich folk connections aren’t going to restore the faith so many have lost in him. It sure looks like being a preacher was more about helping himself than his “flock.” Abner Williams
We have plenty of time Dear Editor: With all the talk and posturing going on right now you would think that the elections for mayor and aldermen were right around the corner. The news media is trying to get the high profile people like Toni Preckwinkle and Karen Lewis to commit to running against Rahm. They both understand the timing is right now. The same is true with Alderman Bob Fioretti. The people who announced they will run against Rahm don’t seem to have a clue except the young West Side woman named Amara Enyia. She is not terribly politically savvy but from the government side of things she seems to know. I don’t know what Howard Brookins did or didn’t do but he sure has a lot of people early on lining up to run against him. No fewer than five folks have strongly hinted or said outright they will be a challenger for the 21st Ward seat. Doesn’t look like in any other part of the city so many people are so ticked off at their alderman
that they are lined up to run against him or her. But then again Will Burns did have folk camping outside of his office because he wasn’t saying the right thing about the Dyett School closing in the Fourth Ward. They were ticked, but nobody was saying they are taking out nominating petitions. Come on folks we have all of the summer and fall to enjoy and do we really need people bothering us with fundraisers, asking us to sign petitions, or listening to the spiel. I don’t think so. COMMENTARY
President Obama’s 54 Problems Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford In 2008, the whole world applauded the United States for electing its first African American president. No part of the world was happier than the continent of Africa with its 54 nations. After all, this president was half Caucasian and half Kenyan. He was a direct child of Africa not just a descendent. But to everyone’s surprise and disappointment, President Obama during his first four years showed very little love for his father’s homeland. In fact, when African heads of state (President/Prime Minister) would request a meeting with this new president they were denied. Even the First Lady of Kenya requested a short meeting with our First Lady and she was told in so many words, that will never happen. As we would visit various nations in Africa we noticed that the disappointment started morphing into anger. We all thought that relations between Africa and our business entities would improve based on who was elected to lead the largest economy on earth. No, it didn’t happen. China, India, Pakistan, Turkey, etc. saw their relationships
Harry C. Alford with African nations improving. It is only natural that you love the one who loves you back. So, the billions of annual dollars that Africa trades with started to go at an increasing rate to nations other than America. What really woke us up is when our Millennium Challenge Account awarded $800 million to Ghana to build a national highway. They named the highway the George W. Bush Highway in hon-
or of the president who gave them the funding. However, when it came to selecting a construction company for this project they chose a Chinese firm at the request of the President of China. This denotes the anger in the leaders of Africa. With the United States having an African American president, our business competitors picked up their game. China kicked it off with an “African Summit.” Their president invited every African president to come to its capital Beijing and receive heavy love. They entertained them lavishly. Even gave one big State Dinner in the historical Great Hall. They gave them $20 billion in financial aid with a promise of another $10 billion. The president of China promised to provide financial loans for every major project they plan as long as a Chinese firm was performing the contract. Next came Japan who hosted its African Summit in Tokyo. The Japanese president gave fifteen minutes of personal time with each of the 46 participating heads of state. The nation chipped in $30 billion in financial aid plus the funding of 10,000 internships for young African entrepreneurs and students.
India and the European Union had their African Summits also. Even Russia is now getting into the “Love Africa Movement.” They are providing financial aid and lending power to the continent. They are leveraging this positive relationship to gain needed votes at the UN as they start attacking their neighboring nations. Yes, everyone jumped into the game ahead of us. We cannot get mad any time we hear of China, India or whoever else doing gigantic business with the richest continent (natural resources) on earth. They worked it and deserve it at this point. We have been so stupid. It is a major embarrassment and it is hurting our international trade. Evidently, as President Obama reflects on his legacy he has decided to do something – even if it is token. If he needs to make up for lost opportunities, he had better do something fabulous. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Finally, he has called for an African Summit – August 4 - 6. All of us leaped in joy but as the itinerary is being formed there seems to be a lot missing. As opposed to the summits of our competitors, no African head of state will receive a one on one with
our president. They will be herded into a room for some “interactive dialogue.” What? They are supposed to come all the way over here for a lecture? The Senate will hold some meetings with them. Cabinet secretaries have been instructed to have some meetings with the contingent. This is insulting. A president is supposed to meet with the other presidents. A cabinet secretary is a subordinate to a president. The next event has me scratching my head. They are going to, at last, have a state dinner. But it won’t be in the formal White House. No, these African presidents will be escorted to the lawn of the White House. Where’s the love? They can’t even sit on the White House furniture and eat with exquisite china and such. No, it’s the lawn for these Black politicians. Finally, I see no item in the itinerary that will afford them a meeting with our Congressional Black Caucus. That seems eerie. Our competitors must be laughing. African presidents are not laughing. Mr. Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce®. Website: www.nationalbcc.org. Democrats ‘Ain’t Loyal’ By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist Rev. Jamal Bryant of Baltimore was widely criticized recently for quoting a line from a popular Chris Brown’s song: “Hoes Ain’t Loyal.” Bryant could have avoided controversy – and been on point – if he had instead said, “Democrats ain’t loyal.” They ain’t, to borrow the vernacular. Although people of color comprised 45 percent of Democratic voters in 2012, less than 2 percent of the $1.1 billion collected over a 4-year period by the three primary Democratic fundraising committees went to people of color – defined as U.S. residents who are African American, Latino, Asian American or Pacific Islander, or Native American – according to the “2014 Fannie Lou Hamer Report” by PowerPAC+, a national advocacy organization that helps elect progressives to office by building on the political power of the multiracial majority in America. Actually, the Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) figures are even smaller than reported because the study counted any firm that had a person of color as a principal owner, not the more commonly accepted definition requiring that they be the majority owner. Federal Election Commission reports filed by the three largest Democratic fundraising committees: the National Democratic Committee, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. “Even amidst the massive infusion of ‘outside’ money, the Democratic Party remains the largest source of funds for Democrats seeking office (other than the Presidency ). Each cycle, the Party takes in hundreds of millions of dollars and uses these funds to provide the national electoral infrastructure and support those of the states,” the report stated. It explained, “While most of the media attention falls on the megadonors who make significant financial contributions to the Democratic Party, in the aggregate, small donors actually contribute more to the Party’s finances than do the megadonors. Indeed, donors who made contributions of less than $200 provided a full third of the Party’s financial resources over the past two cycles, having donated over $371,345,529.” According to the report, “Well over half a billion dollars was spent on these consultants over the past two election cycles, an amount that represents approximately half of the funds raised and disbursed by the Party.” But few of those dollars found their way to people of color. Overall, of 285 firms receiving disbursements from the Democratic Par-
George E. Curry ty in the 2010 and 2012 election cycles, only 14 – or 4.9 percent – were MBE firms. Five of the MBEs were polling firms, three provided communications services and six provided political strategy services or IT. Among the 14 firms, four of them received 87 percent of all dollars disbursed to MBEs. They were, in order, Peter D. Hart Research Associates, Inc., $2,206,772.50 (25 percent of all MBE Research, dollars); SKD Knickerbocker, $2,138,671 (24 percent); Brilliant Corners Research, Inc., $1,908,369.26 (22 percent) and Thoughtworks ($1,328,464.92). Peter D. Hart, whose firm received the most MBE dollars, is a white male. Yet, highly-respected Black pollster Ronald L. Lester received only $45,670.00 from the Democratic Party, according to the report. Brilliant Corners, headed by Cornel Belcher, an African American, was
third among MBEs with $1.9 million. Dewey Square Group, with Minyon Moore, African American, and Maria Cardona, a Latina, on its team received only $81,054.73, or 0.9 percent of MBE dollars. Among the study’s recommendations: Conduct a disparity study to diagnose the problem; Set goals for diversifying contract awards; Make a plan to increase access and capacity and Measure progress and hold decision-makers accountable. In 2014, the Democratic Party has no credible excuse for such poor performance. Even with an exaggerated definition of what constitutes a Minority Business Enterprise, Democrats fall short. “… Today’s voter looks quite different from the model voter of even 50 years ago who was much more likely to be male, have a job with a union that afforded him time off to vote during the work day, and have access to an array of news sources that offered some semblance of balanced reporting on the candidates and their positions, among other things,” the report stated. “Today, women, especially those not married, form a core part of the Democratic Party’s base, as do Voters of Color. To put it bluntly, these voters are already the largest constituencies within our Party, and their influence
Blacks Must control their own coMMunity
will only increase over the coming decades.” Diversifying spending with Black vendors, Black media and African Americans who offer professional services does not detract from the Party’s overall goal. “…The ultimate goal of these efforts is to win,” the report observed. “And winning among today’s multiracial and ever evolving electorate requires cultural competence at its finest.” This report should be followed up with others, including an examination of spending by Republicans. As the report noted, “It is deeply disappointing that we are even having this conversation in 2014… If People of Color are smart and talented enough that one of them can serve as leader of the free world, then they are certainly smart and talented enough to run political campaigns for Congress, Senate, and the White House.” George E. COMMENTARY
35th ANNUAL NATIONAL NBUF CONVENTION Dr. Conrad Worrill, Director/Professor, Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS) located at 700 East Oakwood Blvd, Chicago, Illinois, 60653, 773-268-7500, Fax: 773-268-3835 E-mail: c-worrill@neiu.edu, Website: www.ccicschicago.org, Twitter: @CCICS_ Chicago.
Dr. Conrad Worrill The National Black United Front (NBUF) will hold its Thirty-fifth Annual National Convention from July 10-13, 2014 at Howard University in Washington, D.C. The theme of this year’s convention is “35 years of Black Empowerment and Self-Determination.”
This year’s convention will feature Omowale Clay of the December 12th Movement, Dr. Raymond Winbush of Morgan State University, Dr. Leonard Jeffries, Baba James Small, Dr. Marimba Ani and a host of other activists and scholars from around the country who will address the convention theme. Under the leadership of NBUF Chairperson, Brother Kofi Taharka of Houston, Texas, the new Vice Chairperson of Organizing and Training, Brother Salim Adofo, with the assistance of NBUF National Secretary, Toriono Granger and National Treasurer, Sandra Dean, NBUF continues to be a major participant in the Black Liberation Movement. The National Black United Front, over a thirty-one year period, has related to, and organized around, numerous issues that have impacted on the African World Community. Whether it was combating the numerous cases of police brutality in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and other urban centers, NBUF was there. Whether it was fighting to save people from the death penalty in Texas and Chicago, NBUF was there. NBUF has constantly challenged the racist and white supremacists public policy positions of the Crimi-
nal Justice System and to that end our Prison Correspondence Program keeps us in contact with our sisters and brothers behind the walls throughout America. NBUF was at the forefront of the Free South Africa Movement and played a leading role in forcing economic sanctions against South Africa’s Apartheid regime. Our picketing of entertainers who were on the South African Entertainers Hit List for performing in South Africa, against the will of the movement in South Africa, brought great public attention to the plight of our brothers and sisters in that region of the world. Our work with the New Jewel Movement in Grenada was significant. Whether it was the Summer Work Study Project, working on the runway at the airport or volunteering in the schools, NBUF was there. In our international work, the Commission on Women’s Issues of NBUF organized a delegation of NBUF sisters who attended the United Nations World Conference on Women, held in Nairobi, Kenya in July 10-19, 1985. The NBUF sisters made a significant contribution at this conference by networking with African women from all over the world and presenting a pa-
per on “The Presence of African Women in America.” NBUF was there for Jesse Jackson’s presidential runs in 1984 and 1988, and the successful mayoral bids of African in America in Chicago, New York, St, Louis, Kansas City, and Houston in the 1980s. NBUF participated in other electoral campaigns for seats in Congress and state offices in several districts around the country. In fact, one of our own, Rev. Jew Don Boney won a council seat in Houston, Texas. NBUF member, Lee Barnes successfully won a school board seat on the same board in Kansas City, Missouri. NBUF played a key role in the efforts to organize the African American Leadership Summit in 1994. NBUF members were key organizers in the historic Million Man March in October of 1995. On the education front, over the past twenty years, NBUF has been, and continues to be, the key grassroots organizers in the African Centered Education Movement. Our World African Centered Education Plan is a model for addressing the various areas of education. As a response to revelations that the CIA was involved in the explosion of crack/cocaine in the African
Communities in America in the summer of 1996, NBUF launched a historic Genocide Petition Campaign Against the United States Government. This Genocide Petition Campaign produced over 200,000 signatures and in May 1997, the NBUF led delegation traveled to the United Nations Human Rights Center in Geneva, Switzerland and presented these petitions and other evidence on behalf of African people in America. Out of our successful Genocide Campaign, NBUF collaborated with the December 12th Movement that organized the Durban 400 to participate and helped successfully lobby the United Nations World Conference Against Racism (WCAR) to declare that the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade and Slavery were Crimes Against Humanity in the summer of 2001. As a follow-up to our successful participation in this conference, NBUF continued to collaborate with the December 12th Movement in organizing the Millions For Reparations Rally that was held August 17, 2002 in Washington, D.C., where over 50,000 African people attended from 38 states, 67 cities, and viewed by millions on (Continued on page 17)
INDEPENDENCE? ADVERTISING SUPPORT, AND AFRICAN AMERICAN ORGANIZATIONS In the “afterglow” of the Fourth of You Lie, I am flipping through an African American magazine, enjoying the content, but looking for the “bite.” For how can you not bite when you look at the space in which African American people occupy? Our middle class is growing, but fragile. The level of poverty among African Americans has hardly changed in the past decade. Unemployment rates for African Americans remain high, despite talk of economic “recovery.” But too many of our organizations have little bark, and even less bite. Have we been co-opted by the organizations that support us, the advertisers that fund our organizations, efforts, and magazines? To some extent, advertisers and others are working in their own best interest, targeting people who will purchase their products. From hair products to banks, it makes sense for organizations to reach out to the African American community. At the same time, is there a price we pay for patronage? I am stepping onto shaky ground when I raise this point. My own organization, Economic Education, seeks contracts and grants to support 6

efforts to engage in financial and economic literacy. Banks will be among my likely supporters. Will that muzzle me? Can you accept money from banking institutions while criticizing redlining and the financial abuse of African Americans? Will organizations shy away from you when you simply tell the truth? Will support be withdrawn, either openly or subtly? Is there a space where African American leaders can speak without restraint? I remember, years ago, speaking at a technology organization’s conference and earning a collective gasp of horror when I spoke about the absence of African Americans in senior positions. After the speech and reception, the sister who had organized the event asked to speak with me privately. “Everything you said was correct, “she said. “But this was not the place to say it.” She went on to share that she had suggested that I do a series of talks for the organization, and that while she could not rescind her own proposal, she would be tepid. That’s just my experience, but I wonder how many others have cut and pasted their views to seek corporate support? The Los Angeles chap-
Dr. Julianne Malveaux ter of the NAACP, for example, was all set to give Donald Sterling a second lifetime achievement award because he’d donated a few dollars (reports range from $45,000 to $100,000) to the organization. After Sterling’s racist comments were blasted, the offer of the achievement award was rescinded. The controversy surrounding the potential award caused the Los Angeles leader of the NAACP, Leon Jenkins, to resign. There was no outcry when Sterling
got the first award, although he was a well-known racist slumlord. Is a slumlord’s support worth an NAACP Lifetime Achievement Award? Are some of our organizations trading cash for honors and publicity? Or are we getting our earned sponsorships in exchange for our patronage? It is something to think about especially in light of the Koch Foundation’s recent support of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). While many in the HBCU universe are grateful for the contribution, others are repelled by it, to the point of declining the direct contribution to their schools. When I was President of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs (NANBPW), I was introduced to a corporate sponsor by one of my board members. Beforehand, I was asked to “tone it down” for fear that my abrasive style might turn the sponsor off. I sat for tea and bit my tongue so many times that I thought I’d find its tip floating in my tea. The result? A generous sponsorship and a hot, cleansing shower for me. I am raising this question chafing at the paucity of independent and critical Black voices, understanding that
Blacks Must control their own coMMunity
too many are muted by the corporate support they receive. If voices are not muted, then the concern about support and challenging positions are certainly discussed behind closed doors. And the result? “We have to look into this matter.” “We need to study this a bit more.” In other words, we need to check with the folks who support us to make sure this is okay. Without disparaging those organizations or individuals that depend on corporate support, I wonder if there is a way for progressive African Americans to support our own organization, free and unfettered, with no fear of implicit or explicit censorship. Dr. Ron Daniels and the Institute for the Black World does some of this work, but they struggle for lack of financial support, relying on a few volunteers and underpaid friends who maintain the organization. It is often said that we buy what we want and beg for what we need. We need independent Black voices. We need them, but will we pay for them? BUSINESS
Debt Settlement: Lots of Risk, No Guarantees By Charlene Crowell You’ve probably heard the advertisements on urban radio urging consumers with at least $10,000 in debt to call a number right away for a financial rescue. Promising to end debt troubles by getting creditors to somehow accept less money than what is owed can sound really appealing. In reality however, consumers mired in debt may often find debt settlement programs to be costly, misleading, and far less helpful than the radio ad promises. In the newest chapter in the research series titled The State of Lending, the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL) finds that debt settlement is a risky strategy that can leave consumers more financially vulnerable and still laden with debt years after they enroll in such a program. Regardless of how well a consumer follows the instructions of his/her debt settlement firm, they may ultimately be unsuccessful because many creditors simply refuse to deal with debt settlement companies. According to the report, “Debt set-
tlement companies do not tell consumers whether creditors will work with their firms at the time of enrollment. However, even if debt-settlement companies were required to disclose whether a particular creditor routinely works with their firm, this provides no real guarantee. In many cases, the party who owns a debt changes over time, since a debt may be sold successively to multiple parties.” Available data suggests that at least two-thirds of debts must be settled in order to achieve a net positive outcome from debt settlement. Even more debts must be settled for the consumer to achieve real savings if they end up being liable for taxes on the debt reduction. In the end, many consumers never realize that kind of experience. Rather, they end up worse off financially. According to the American Fair Credit Council, an industry trade association, consumers must typically be enrolled in debt settlement for three to four years in order to complete the program. During this time, debt balances grow an average 20 percent while consumers
Charlene Crowell wait for settlements to be reached. Additionally, their credit scores are negatively affected, financial instability increased, and the likelihood of creditor lawsuits loom near. According to Leslie Parrish, co-author of the report and deputy research director at CRL, “When a consumer stops making payments on a debt, not only is she/he vulnerable to fees and an increased interest
rate, the reporting of this delinquency to credit bureaus can impact credit scores for years.” In general, the higher a consumer’s credit score is, the lower the cost of credit they will incur. Conversely, the lower one’s credit score, the higher the cost of credit and interest will be. Whether applying for a credit card, auto loan or a mortgage, bad credit histories make future credit and borrowing more expensive. In 2010, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued regulation that barred debt settlement companies from charging fees until they reached settlements with the client’s creditors. While this regulation has stopped some of the most egregious industry practices, CRL’s report finds that significant financial risks remain for debt settlement clients. Today, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau shares regulatory oversight of debt settlement with the FTC. Thus far, CFPB has taken multiple enforcement actions against several debt-settlement companies and one payment processor. CRL also sees a role for states to establish meaningful limits of debt set-
tlement fees. One recommendation is to limit the fees that can be charged and to calculate such fees on the basis of the amount of savings achieved for the consumer. This approach would make whatever savings derived relative to the amount originally owed at the time the consumer enrolled their debt. State and federal regulators could also require better screening of prospective customers to lower the risk of a bad outcome. Orland Park retail employer partners with Moraine Valley to train, hire 50+ A cohort of job-seekers age 50 and over received customer service training at Moraine Valley Community College as part of the AARP Foundation BACK TO WORK 50+ @ Moraine Valley Community College Initiative. David Huesser, general manager of Orland Square Mall and Lake View Plaza, facilitated the training at the Palos Hills campus in April and May. “With the retail sector being one of the largest employers in the southwest suburban region, it was important to partner with someone significant from the industry,” said Lisa Bly, assistant dean of Corporate, Community and Continuing Education at Moraine Valley and project director. “David brought examples of what he requires as an employer and real experiences regarding customer behavior and how it should be handled. He gave the hard core facts about retail and the ability to grow your career from entry level to executive positions.” The AARP Foundation BACK TO WORK 50+ @ Moraine Valley Community College Initiative, funded by a two-year $165,200

grant, helps low-income, older adults obtain good jobs in their communities, increase their financial capability and avoid being victims to financial fraud and abuse. Moraine Valley is one of 15 community colleges selected nationally by AARP Foundation in collaboration with the American Association of Community Colleges to administer BACK TO WORK 50+ in its communities. The college will connect 50+ job candidates to specific in-demand jobs in home health care, retail and call center industries. “The program was well detailed, giving the potential employee an opportunity to learn the necessary skills to be successful and advance themselves in retail.” Huesser said. “The open dialog within the class was very valuable to the group, allowing for the sharing of experiences and ideas throughout the learning process. I feel the students left more prepared to move into a retail job, provided the right opportunity becomes available.” Job candidates aged 50 and older can register at 1-855-850-2525 (select option two) to attend an infor-

500 youth get close-up of learning opportunities Hundreds of young people recently got a firsthand look at the summer offerings of the Chicago City of Learning (CCOL) – Chicago’s innovative ‘connected learning’ initiative that is being heralded and copied throughout the nation. While 20 or so programs were available to the kids who gathered for a mini Maker Party (where they get to do and make things) and rally, throughout the summer CCOL is offering youth more than a thousand different programs sponsored by more than 120 organizations in neighborhoods throughout the city, online and through the city’s libraries and CCOL Youth Hubs. All programs – whether they are in science or math or sports or poetry – have some aspect of STEAM (Science Technology, Engineering, Arts or Math) to them. And all offer digital badges to participants who achieve the various skills embedded in each program. The programs on display at Ping Tom Park were representative of the 1000s available. Among the most popular at the park were Sweetwater Foundation’s Aquaponics display, which uses the waste produced by fish to feed and grow vegetables and herbs; the TRIO Upward Bound Math and Science at NEIU’s robotics display; and the ever-popular Chicago Architecture Foundation’s
LEGO table, where children’s imagination abound. Kids had a chance to preview Mindful Practice’s hiphop yoga summer program as well as Chicago Park District’s Mobile Neighborhood Soccer League. Other organizations offering activity stations in the Maker Party were: CrossRealms, Inc.; Global Girls Media; A Gathering of Wombynkind; Chicago History Museum; Redmoon Theater; Inferno Mobile Recording Studio of Chicago Park District; Red Clay Dance; and the City of Chicago – with a communal art project. All organizations at the event offer summer programs through CCOL and many are part of CCOL’s year-round activities. DePaul Professor Nichole Pinkard, who directs the Chicago City of Learning partnership said, “As exciting as today was, CCOL itself is more exciting. We’ve assembled and worked with more than 120 organizations in virtually every neighborhood to ensure that the programs available this summer to Chicago’s youth are free or affordable, engage them in activities they love, and at the same time reward them for achieving the real world skills embedded in them – whether the activity be poetry or coding, creating videos and rap music or doing sports.” The rally featured performances

By Elaine Hegwood Bowen, MSJ By Raymond Ward HEY, HEY, HEY!: The DuSable Museum of African American History is honored to present a new exhibition, Funky Turns 40: Black Character Revolution, which provides a nostalgic foray into the animated images of the Black characters of popular cartoons of the 1970s. The exhibition will continue at the Museum until October 19, 2014. Funky Turns 40 contains sixty pieces of Black animated art from the 1970s and featured in popular shows such as Fat Albert and The Cosby Kids, Schoolhouse Rock, and the Harlem Globetrotters. Co-curated by cartoon aficionados Pamela Thomas and Loreen Williamson, Funky Turns 40 includes a dazzling array of pieces of animated art from the Museum Of UnCut Funk, an online collection developed by Thomas and commemorates the 40th anniversary of popular 1970s Saturday morning cartoons that featured positive Black characters for the first time in television history. It was during the late 1960s/early 1970s that Saturday morning television cartoons began to feature Black animated characters in a positive and realistic manner. Fueled by the Civil Rights movement and the overwhelming commercial success of Black musicians and athletes
Fat Albert and The Cosby Kids during this time period, television producers began to explore projects with a wide, multicultural appeal. This new generation of Black characters were stars of their own series with a modern look and with contemporary story lines that delivered culturally relevant messages. Bill Cosby’s Fat Albert and The Cosby Kids paved the way for a host of Black characters and shows featuring music icons, sports heroes, and multicultural casts like The Jackson Five, Josie and The Pussy Cats, The Harlem Globetrotters, and I Am The Greatest (featuring Muhammad Ali). Even franchises like the overtly white Hardy Boys series and Super Friends began to introduce positive Black characters who worked side by side with their white counterparts. For the first time, children saw cartoon characters that looked and talked like real Black people, full of warmth, humor and intelligence. These shows empowered a generation of children with cartoon role models who promoted family values, education, friendship, civic duty, personal responsibility and sportsmanship in fun, vibrant bursts of animation. The production of these cartoons also employed Black animators, musicians and actors – jobs that had traditionally been filled by non-Blacks who often approximated their understanding of Black culture. It was also during this time that prominent African Americans like Bill Cosby and Berry Gordy led the development of animated television programming featuring Black characters, from concept through to art creation and production. 12

‘EDGE OF TOMORROW’ A Review by Bonnie DeShong I can’t wait till the end of this review. Spend the money to see this film in the theater. I am not all that big on 3D films but you really should see “Edge of Tomorrow” in 3D if possible. This is “Groundhog Day” on steroids and Tom Cruise is the best actor for the role. Major Bill Cage (Tom Cruise) is better than “Uncle Sam” when it comes to Armed Forces recruitment. He is Mr. PR. After he gives his pitch anyone would follow him into battle. He is strong, good looking, confident and convincing; until he is given orders to lead a team of soldiers into battle against some alien spider life force. We find that Major Cage isn’t all that he seems. At this point is where we become one with Major Cage as he lives the same day over and over and over again. The good major is now a pri-

League of American Orchestras awards Wayne Brown with its highest honor By Barbara Wright-Pryor The League of American Orchestras’ National Conference, hosted by the Seattle Symphony, met June 4-6, 2014. Nearly 1000 orchestra administrators, musicians, volunteers, and board members came together to experience musical performances, events, and sessions presented by thought leaders, industry experts and beyond. The League’s highest honor, The Gold Baton Award, was presented to Wayne S. Brown by Deborah Rutter, president of The Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association and president designate of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Director of Music and Opera for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for almost 17 years, and currently President and CEO of the Michigan Opera Theatre based in Detroit, Michigan, Wayne Brown was honored as “a
steadfast friend to orchestras nationwide, a fearless advocate, and a cherished advisor to countless colleagues.” The Gold Baton has been awarded by the organization (formerly known as The American Symphony Orchestra League) for distinguished service to America’s orchestras since 1948. As NEA’s Director of Music and Opera, Brown managed thousands of music and opera grants. In addition, he was integral to NEA’s national music initiatives, including the NEA Jazz Masters Fellowships, the nation’s highest award in jazz; NEA Opera Honors, celebrating individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to opera in America; and Great American Voices, in which vocal ensembles from opera companies toured military installations. Prior to his affiliation with the NEA, Brown served as producer of music programs for the Cultur-

He was executive director of the Louisville Orchestra where he exceeded the organization’s $10 million goal for its endowment campaign, established a regional touring program, and produced two international music festivals. With the Detroit Symphony Orchestra he was an administrative manager and later named an assistant manager. Wayne Brown was a founding member of the Magic in Music Advisory Committee for the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, has served on advisory boards for the Mellon and Ford Foundations, is a former vice chairman of the American Symphony Orchestra League, and previously served as a member of the American Arts Alliance Board. In his address at the League’s annual meeting, League President and CEO Jesse Rosen’s state-of-
the-field overview underscored the connections between time and place as reflected in orchestra programming, finances, diversity, and artistry. He celebrated programming that reveals “creativity emerging from a deep sense of place” and emphasized that sense of place also encompasses the financial arena: “challenges and opportunities in your local market are at least as important, if not more so, than benchmarks compared to orchestras in other communities.” Rosen urged orchestra leaders to “prioritize diversity and inclusion work,” and to “support the entrepreneurs already playing in our orchestras, from the videographers creating content for their orchestras’ websites to the ambassadors building new community relationships.” For more information on Wayne S. Hyde Park Suzuki Institute presents ‘Just a Touch of Love’ Iconic 70s funk band SLAVE to perform at benefit concert for South Side music school The Hyde Park Suzuki Institute (HPSI) will present SLAVE, Keepers of the Funk, and Captain Sky in a concert Saturday, August 2, to raise $10,000 towards the cost of relocating to the Chicago Theological Seminary. Over dinner conversation with a member of 70s Funk Band SLAVE, founder of the Hyde Park Suzuki Institute, Lucinda Ali-Landing, excitedly talked about her life’s passion - her music school on the South Side of Chicago whose students were recently accepted into Juilliard, Princeton and Curtis Institute to name a few. The tone of the conversation quickly turned into concern as she then talked about the urgent need of the school to now move after an abrupt end to their current lease. “We need to raise funds to cover the cost of the build-out into our own space by September.” Band drummer Steve Green immediately responded with, “Lu, we can make this happen for the kids.” The benefit concert will take place at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, 915 E. 60th St. General admission tickets are $25. VIP tickets are $75, which includes priority seating and a pre-concert reception. To purchase a ticket or become an event sponsorship, contact the Logan Center Box office or the HPSI office at 5500 S. Woodlawn Ave., Chicago or by calling the office at 773-643-1388. The 16-year-old non-profit community music school learned several months ago that their lease would not be renewed in its present location at Augustana Lutheran Church, 5500 S. Woodlawn Ave. and it wants to remain in Hyde Park but needs dedicated space for its programming. 14

Executive Director Lucinda Ali-Landing stands outside HPSI’s new home “Our Twinkle Stars, Suzuki, Outreach and Pathways college prep programs at HPSI will continue to provide access to high quality musical instruction and performance opportunities to families on the South Side of Chicago,” says Founder and Executive Director, Lucinda Ali-Landing. As a violinist herself, she understands the value of having music education as part of a child’s educational experience. “We don’t just have fun and play musical games,” says Ali-Landing, former Junior/Youth Director of Chicago Music Association Branch No. 1, NANM, Inc. “We intentionally nurture and develop skills in children to a professional level that are marketable, valuable and useful to them as adults.” A Chicago native and Kenwood Academy alumna, Lucinda AliLanding uses her skills as violinist to perform professionally with the first violin section of the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Chicago Sinfonietta where, as a member of the Sinfonietta, she also played with the Joffrey Ballet Orchestra in performances of Cinderella, Romeo and Juliet, Midsummer Night’s Dream
and others. Additionally, Ali-Landing is a freelance artist who has performed with other artists such as Ray Charles, Barry White, The Winans, Brian McKnight, Oprah Winfrey, Three Mo’ Tenors, and Ben Vereen. Iconic funk band SLAVE, known for their bass licks, rhythmic arrangements, and soaring lead vocals, had a number of chart topping hits in the late 70s early 80s. Their first big hit was the single “Slide” in 1977 for
Cotillion Records, where they remained until 1984. Other hits include “Watching You,” “Just a Touch of Love,” and “The Party Song.” “I think this concert is a perfect fit for music lovers in the Chicagoland area,” says Ali-Landing. “Adult band musicians started as child musicians learning the craft in hopes to play on a high level like world-renowned members of SLAVE and Captain Sky. Music is music and the genre doesn’t matter.” The HPSI was established to fill a void that was experienced by its founder Lucinda Ali-Landing on the South Side of Chicago. Her father went to great lengths for her to study violin as a child by traveling to the North Shore three times weekly so that she would have access to quality instruction. She completed her Master of Music degree at DePaul University. The Hyde Park Suzuki Institute was founded in 1998 to bring the joy of music and the expression of its richness to children through the teaching methods of those who have
proven through experience and research the exceptional learning ability of the young child. And with years of teaching experience, Ali-Landing felt that there was a great need for a community music school that provided high quality music instruction. “The Hyde Park Suzuki Institute is committed to providing access to high quality music instruction and performance opportunities to families of our culturally diverse communities in Chicago. Our students are encouraged to seek excellence and high musical achievement. “We maintain relationships with community partners who share our mission, which affords our students opportunities to interact with the music community, attend professional concerts and meet world-renowned musicians. Our community partnership programs provide public and private schools, religious institutions, and community-based organizations an opportunity to offer excellent music instruction to students at affordable rates.” For more information, please visit hydeparksuzuki.org.

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING
A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe Family Reunion—gotta’ have a family reunion—it’s so nice to come together—to get together… Tis’ the season and time of the year that families are making plans to get together all around the world. Some will have simple picnics, banquets or fabulous backyard barbeques. While others might take a family cruise or vacation at an exciting resort or city of their choice. Whatever or wherever—nothing is better than siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles, momma, papa, grandparents, grands and longtime friends uniting and coming together for food, fun and sweet fellowship. I wish grandma could see, the whole family. I sure miss her face, And her warm and tender embrace.
And if grandpa was here, I know he’d be smiling for me a tear. To see what he has done, All the off-spring from his daughters and sons. Beautiful songs have been written to celebrate the coming together as well as to build this wonderful unit that God ordained. Although family reunions are major—this event cannot take place without it’s key component—the family. Don’t allow any open wounds or cracks such as fresh or old offenses to disrupt the foundation that provides strength and support for its members, as well as outer circles. The physical family is the most important building block to human society, and as such, it should be nurtured and protected. Families must stay intact. The family is so important, that God created all species and even plant life to produce after its own kind (Gene-

sis1:11-12, 21-24). So what does the Bible say about family? A lot. But more important is the new creation that God is making in Christ—the spiritual family, the Church, made up of all people who call upon the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior. The defining characteristic of this spiritual family is love for one another: John 13: 34-35 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Generations past and present are depending on you to celebrate the lineage and legacy of our ancestors. The O’Jays continue with the lyrics—It’s been a long, long time. Since we had a chance to get together. Nobody knows the next time we see each other—Maybe years and
years from now. So until the next time—keep a prayer in your heart and a smile on your face concerning your posterity. Let’s uplift, bless, pray, respect, honor and have genuine love for and among each other concerning family. Remember, how we treat each other is how we treat our spiritual family—we are All God’s children. Let’s come together and stay together as the powerful unit that God created to bless each member and the world. Are you grateful for your family..? ©Effie Rolfe is the author of “Supersize Your Thinking,” a Media Personality and Motivational Speaker. Congrats to Pastor Kimberly Ray, who will be walking down the aisle this weekend! The international speaker and author of Spiritual Interventions admitted that kingdom work kept her totally occupied, “I’ve been so busy pastoring and ministering. Pastor Kimberly Ray sitting in a brand new restaurant—my sister Denise had mentioned days before. I was reading my bible and studying in the restaurant preparing to speak in Milwaukee. This wonderful man came to the table. He was very gracious and masculine and asked to be allowed to introduce himself. It was brief because he did not want to dominate my time. He left, paid for my meal and left his card,” she said smiling. Obviously, the rest is history. Ray shared, “The scripture www.chicagocrusader.com
states, ‘… the man that finds a wife, finds a good thing.’ Our responsibility is to seek to please the Lord and in the book of Corinthians seek to please him in body and in spirit and pursue the things of God. When it’s time to be found, God will anoint the person to find you. Chapter 8 intervention for single women gives biblical content of our roles while waiting. It gives pitfalls for women not to fall into. Not to put your life in a holding pattern, understanding when a man is going to commit and when he’s not. The times have changed because our single successful women are having difficulty being found,
because men have changed their desire to pursue women to have that alternative lifestyle. It is true that some men are players because their resources are many women.” This Saturday, she will be in an invitation only wedding. Concussions a greater problem for Black youth By Jazelle Hunt Washington Correspondent WASHINGTON (NNPA) – Despite the flurry of news about NFL lawsuits over concussions, the problem affects far more athletes at the high school and junior high school level, according to the federal government statistics. In 2009 alone, nearly 250,000 youth age 19 or younger were treated in emergency rooms for sports and recreation-related injuries that included concussions, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Between 2001 and 2009, the rate of such visits rose 57 percent. Concussions occur when the brain is shaken violently against the skull. Although concussions are the most common brain injury, widespread awareness and concern about this issue in the world of student athletics is fairly recent. But it is especially relevant for Black communities, particularly young men most likely to die from traumatic brain injuries, according to the CDC. And according to data from research nonprofit, Child Trends, 50 to 60 percent of Black American high schoolers were on a sports team in 2011. In severe or untreated cases, they can cause brain damage, seizures, emotional distress, and death—in fact the CDC estimates that 5.3 million U.S. citizens are living with disability as a result of a traumatic brain injury (or TBI, an umbrella term that includes concussions). “From an athletic trainer perspective concussions have always been a big concern. Coaches seemed to think that injuries increased because [athletic trainers] were there, but really it’s that awareness is increased,” says Jennifer Rheeling, a veteran athletic trainer in D.C. Public Schools and chair of the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee for the D.C. State Athletic Association. “In the last five years particularly
with the NFL starting to talk about it, and the lawsuits, has helped immensely now that people get it on a mainstream level. What they thought was just getting their bell rung was really a concussion.” On the most diligent and well-resourced student teams, players take baseline tests—a battery of motor skill drills and survey questions to record their individual peak cognitive health—and have athletic trainers who check for signs of decline. If a concussion is suspected, a player does another test to compare those results to his or her baseline. The ImPACT Concussion Management program is currently the program of record for these tests among school athletic programs. But according to Dr. Vernon Williams, neurologist and medical director of the Sports Concussion Institute, a lack of access to care compounds the (now fading) problem of awareness. ImPACT, for example, costs a minimum of $400 per year for 100 baseline tests and 15 post-injury tests for one school. Meanwhile, many schools and school districts, largely populated by Black and brown children, routinely have to make cuts to balance their budget. “We have coaches who understand the need, but they have different resources. For example, we know baseline testing for people in contact collision sports can help evaluate when people get injured,” Dr. Williams explains. “But it’s uncommon for people to have access to state-ofthe-art baseline testing. Players, school systems, and parents don’t have access to those funds. But we can still implement treatment using creative measures.” Currently, Dr. Gary Harris, who specializes in computer engineering and serves as associate provost for Research and Graduate Studies at Howard University, is working with engineering students and the Bison football team to devise an inexpensive concussion monitoring system,

35th ANNUAL (Cont’d from page 6) CSPAN. In the spring of 2003, NBUF National Chairman, Dr. Conrad W. Worrill, requested that Minister Louis Farrakhan convene a meeting of the key reparations organizers, activists, researchers, scholars, and spiritual workers. This meeting occurred in July 2003 at the Salaam Restaurant in Chicago and out of that meeting the NDABA Movement unfolded. On September 13, 2003, NBUF joined the Millions For Reparations Rally at the United Nations in New York and helped to link the Reparations Movement with the Pan African struggle worldwide. The NDABA Movement meetings were convened in October 2003 in Jackson, Mississippi and in March 2004 in Houston, Texas. This process greatly helped strengthened the unity in the Reparations Movement in America. Through the NDABA Movement process, NBUF Chairman Worrill proposed the establishment of a Reparations Petition Campaign that was adopted by the NDABA forces with the goal of securing one million signatures by the fall
presidential election. Since our inception, NBUF has consistently sponsored a variety of cultural programs throughout the United States, including our Frontlines Album Project, our sponsorship of annual Kwanzaa Programs, and African Liberation Day activities. This has been a major part of NBUF’s work. Through our Frontline Newsletter, Front Page Newspaper, NBUF’s website, e-mail, letters, phone calls, and the traditional grapevine, NBUF communicates with the world. Most importantly, in our organizing efforts, NBUF has maintained strict financial independence, and has recently become a certified organization with the National Black Federation of Charities, an arm of the National Black United Fund, Inc. We are now able to receive donations through payroll deduction from people in the federal workplace throughout the world. We encourage everyone to attend this year’s historic NBUF Convention. Brookins and constituents (Cont’d from page 2) “The program just started back up in 2012, it had been closed a few years,” according to Kindred. “In 2013 two Simeon grads started their apprenticeships and I have two more starting this summer. My layoff was not based on performance. The trades are an avenue for the middle class. The trades give my students power because they can work with their hands. They have earning potential and the world in their hands. It is important that our children have these opportunities.” The activists are also upset about what they say is a caste system in which voices on the North Side are respected and responded to, whereas those on the South and West Sides of the city are ignored. They cited the example of the proposed Obama High School that was to be built on the site of the old Cabrini-Green housing complex. But after residents in the area and park organizations complained loudly, the plans were scrapp ed weeks later and the city offered an apology saying
“more community input was needed.” Brookins said he agreed that the schools in his ward should be better funded, but believes the demonstrators fight should be with CPS and not his office. He committed to using his office to try to make some changes for the schools in his ward. “Yes I will fight for the electrical program at Simeon; yes I will fight for the music, art and computer science teachers and yes I will fight for those parents who feel there are better options for them out there,” Brookins said. Brookins also took exception to the assertion that the money that would be given to Concept would automatically take away funding from other schools in his ward. He said if a resident in his ward were to send their child to a private school, the other neighborhood schools would not get the money anyway, so he does not see this situation as just charter versus neighborhood school.
