By J. Coyden Palmer Recently uncovered documents in Cook County show that Carlton Jenkins, younger brother of Charles Jenkins, pastor of Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church, 4543 S. Princeton Ave., purchased a property from the church for $10 and then took $209,000 in loans out on the property the same day. Records at Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas’ office revealed that Fellowship has paid all of the property taxes on the singlefamily home at 4461 S. Princeton, although it is in Carlton Jenkins’ name. A source with knowledge of the situation and additional documentation obtained by the Crusader shows the church—founded by Rev. Clay Evans—paid for all of the maintenance on the property and insurance since it was first deeded to Jenkins in 2007. A sign posted on the home states the property is managed by the church. On June 17, 2005, a married man named Anthony Oliver sold the property to Fellowship for $10, according to then-Cook County Recorder of Deeds Eugene Moore’s office. On Feb. 26, 2007, that same proper-

vices LLC, which is based out of Deerfield Beach, Florida, the state in which the brothers are originally from. Again on Feb. 26, 2007, Carlton Jenkins took out an additional $11,000 mortgage loan on the property through Fellowship’s credit union at an interest rate of three percent. Carlton Jenkins promised to pay the church $197.66 a month from April 2007 until March of 2012, according to a document from Moore’s office. Obtaining multiple loans simultaneously for a total amount greatly in excess of the actual value of the property is called, “shotgunning.” It is a fraudulent practice that lenders first started seeing nationwide in late 2006 in the heart of the nation’s housing crisis. The current market value of the property Jenkins owns is $117,820, according to the Cook County Assessor’s office. A person with direct knowledge of the situation tells the Crusader Carlton Jenkins never lived at the property as was required in the mortgage agreement, a copy of which the Crusader obtained. The agreement states that within 60 days after the execution of the security instrument, Jenkins was required to live in the property for at least one year after the date of occupancy, unless the (Continued on page 2)
Police superintendent stands by Black commander By Wendell Hutson The Independent Police Review Authority wants Glenn Evans, a Black police commander on the West Side, to be stripped of his police powers because of a criminal complaint filed against him, but Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy has not done so. “The superintendent makes all exemptrank personnel decisions in the department, and throughout his career, Cmdr. Glenn Evans has reduced crime and violence for the communities he has served,” said Martin Maloney, a spokesman for the Chicago Police Department. “Under Cmdr. Evans’ leadership, the 3rd District had 80 fewer shootings last year than in 2012—the sec-
ond largest decline in the city.” The Cook County State’s Attorney Office is investigating Evans for a criminal complaint stemming from a Jan. 30, 2012 incident. According to a police report, Evans, a 28year veteran, allegedly put his gun inside the mouth of Rickey J. Williams, 24, following a foot pursuit Evans and another officer ensued to catch Williams in the 7100 block of South Eberhart Avenue. The misdemeanor charge of reckless conduct was later dropped against Williams. Tandra Simonton, a spokeswoman for the
Cook County State’s Attorney Office said, “We are not in a position, at this time, to make any public comments about this case.” In March, McCarthy reassigned Evans to the Harrison District, 3151 W. Harrison St., from the Grand Crossing District, 7040 S. Cottage Grove Ave., “because I needed one of my best officers over there,” McCarthy said during a community meeting at police headquarters. “The decision to send Glenn to the West Side was a difficult decision.” Shortly after Evans arrived at the Harrison District in March, he found himself embroiled in a heated argument with Alderman Jason Ervin (28th), who alleged that Evans threatened to have him arrested. Coincidently, the alderman’s father was commander of the Harrison District in the 1990s. “We [often] take commanders from slower districts to more busier (sic) districts, and we have a problem on the West Side,” added

Simeon alums put mayor and CPS CEO on blast By J. Coyden Palmer Simeon Career Vocational Academy alumni and community members interested in getting the electricity program restored at the South Side school are launching an email and phone-calling campaign to force school and city officials to reverse their decision. During a recent meeting at Simeon, supporters of the program decided an outreach campaign encouraging other alums and backers to contact Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Dr. Barbara Byrd-Bennett, CEO of Chicago Public Schools, citing the reasons the electricity program must be restored. Organizers said the outreach will be nationwide. The group also is seeking to determine who authorized the shutdown of the program. They explained it is critical to the community as the electricity curriculum can create careers for students not interested in college. The change in strategy came after a raucous community meeting July 31 at Simeon, which ended abruptly when attendees questioning the principal and network chief said they believed the pair does not have the power to make the decision to close. CPS’s communications officers initially noted the decision to close the last electrical shop in the city was made by Simeon Principal Dr. Sheldon House. House was not able to satisfactorily answer audience member’s questions, which led several to say they did not believe he made the decision. House’s detractors cited his defensive posture and uneasiness when speaking, as the reason for
Barbara Byrd Bennett their conclusion. “How many students do you need to keep this program going?” asked Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) Recording Secretary Michael Brunson. House replied the number was 82. Last year the program had 60 students. “Had you told us this beforehand we could have gotten that number plus more,” yelled agitated Simeon Alumni Association members. House told the audience he called the meeting to inform the community of plans for moving forward. But he never got to reveal that plan because the angry crowd said that is not how the meeting was billed, and they are demanding nothing less than immediate reinstatement of the program, and will not accept anything less. “So what you’re saying to us is that the program is gone for good and this decision is final and cannot be overturned?” asked Latisa Kindred, the electrical program teacher who was told last month her job was gone, along with the program.
“Yes,” responded House who was supported by network Chief Elizabeth Kirby, who nodded in agreement after showing up 30 minutes late. That answer did not go over well as House was shouted down for the first of several times during the hourlong gathering. Audience members said they came to the meeting expecting House to explain his decision and give the community ways to bring back the program. When House and Kirby made it clear that restoration would not happen, emotions took over with several people storming out and cursing the two as they exited. Shawn Gowder, who lives blocks from Simeon, said it is time to remove House as principal and urged the current Local School Council (LSC) members to vote down House’s budget until the electricity shop is reinstated. Members from State Senator Jacqueline Collins said if the Simeon electricity program is not restored by Chicago Public Schools then school officials need not come to Springfield to seek additional funding. Visit www.chicagocrusader.com to read the full story. last year’s LSC said they were never told the program was in jeopardy. The meeting was briefly interrupted when tempers flared and a confrontation ensued between House and a parent of an electricity shop
Mayor Rahm Emanuel student. The parent said he did not feel House was forthcoming with information and questioned his autonomy. The crowd asked for a one-year moratorium on the program so they can market it to potential students. Some of those in the audience also asked for the program to be reinstated for the students who are already enrolled. They recommended a gradual phase out. Kirby and House answered neither of those questions, nor the one about who can override the decision. “If you are the one who made the decision than you are the one who can change your mind,” shouted a woman from the crowd. “I don’t think you made the decision. I think Rahm Emanuel and Byrd-Bennett made the decision and they just sent you two dummies in here to take the heat for it.” Kirby raised the crowd’s suspicions when she said, along with House she had been working on a transition plan that would allow students to take electricity shop as an after
school elective. That immediately drew the ire of alum who asked if the two of them had been working on an alternative plan for a year, why was nobody else notified? Throughout the meeting, the PA system kept losing power or had severe static as people were trying to speak, making it difficult to hear. The batteries in the microphone were changed but that did not help. House said it was something wrong with the system. “Yeah that’s because you need an electrician to fix it,” shouted someone from the crowd to roars of
Senator Jackie Collins laughter. Nearly 100 people were present. Many said they were committed to turning up the pressure on CPS, Emanuel and informing the community about what is taking place. The CTU contends vocational education is being removed from CPS schools while suburban schools are either maintaining or increasing them.

To not do so, would constitute occupancy mortgage fraud, according to federal laws. Lenders typically charge higher interest rates for non-owner-occupied properties as opposed to those where the borrower lives on the property. The same source says Fellowship paid for all of the rehabilitation of the property when it was first purchased—around $20,000—because the property was unlivable at the time. The source believes the FBI and IRS need to look into the matter because church funds are being misused. Between March of 2005 and February of 2006, Fellowship acquired at least eight properties within a quarter mile of the church. Most of the properties were vacant lots, with the exception of the home Jenkins bought and another property that Fellowship owns at 233 W. 45th Place. As of last week, the house Jenkins bought from Fellowship is current on all property taxes. Two checks dated March 22, 2013 and Sept. 6, 2013, show Fellowship paid $1,384.70 and $750.02, respectively, to Treasurer Pappas’ office for 2012 taxes. A church financial expenditure report the Crusader received showed that Fellowship paid State Farm Insurance $1,613 for an insurance policy on the residence Jenkins owns. The Crusader contacted the

IRS and FBI for comment regarding this matter. A spokesperson for the IRS said it is against the law for any IRS employee to comment on or discuss information about a taxpayer. The prohibition includes commenting on circumstances, such as compliance or non-compliance with federal tax laws that could be construed as comment or discussion about a specific taxpayer. A spokesperson for the Chicago FBI office said policy does not allow the agency to confirm or deny any current investigation taking place, but did say mortgage fraud is something the agency takes very seriously. Attempts to reach Carlton Jenkins and his wife, Vonkesha, at the couple’s home were unsuccessful. The person who answered the phone at Fellowship said they would have no comment for the Crusader because of recent articles written about Rev. Charles Jenkins before abruptly hanging up the phone. www.chicagocrusader.com

Guilty plea does not sway Ford backers By J. Coyden Palmer A state legislator from the West Side has pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of tax fraud and faces up to six months in prison. State Rep. LaShawn Ford (D-8th) made the plea agreement Aug. 4. In exchange for his plea, prosecutors have dropped 17 felony counts against him. Ford, 42, will also be able to keep his seat in the House. “I’m sorry that I underestimated my taxes,” said Ford outside the Dirksen Federal Building, after the half-hour hearing. “I apologize to the constituents of my district for putting them through this.” On November 29, 2012, Ford was indicted on charges of bank fraud alleging he provided misleading evidence to obtain a $500,000 extension on a line of credit. He was charged with using the money for personal expenses rather than rehabilitating an owned property, as stated in the loan documentation. Those who stood by Ford from the beginning like Pastor Robbie Wilkerson and Rev. Ira Acree said they never gave up faith the serious charges against him would be
dropped. Acree said all along he thought it was a simple oversight and something federal prosecutors were making bigger than what it was. “I’m glad to know Rep. Ford will now have the weight of this ordeal lifted from his shoulders,” Acree said. “I saw what it was doing to him personally. Now he can put this chapter of his life behind him and move forward. He’s been a politician that has worked on behalf of the people in this district.” Wilkerson and Ford are longtime friends. Now the head of New Kingdom Church on the West Side, Wilkerson said a felony conviction would have meant Ford would have to resign his state office. Wilkerson said that would not have been good for the constituents, as Ford has proven himself as a reliable leader in Austin. Resident Janeen Fairfield said she has been a supporter of Ford since his first election in 2008. She believes like many others that Ford was targeted because they are African Americans. “I think they [prosecutors] have it in for Black politicians,” Fairfield said. “It seems as though our people and Hispanic politicians
State Rep. LaShawn Ford are the only ones charged with crimes around here.” Luther Williams however does not agree. While he is happy Ford will remain his representative, he said Ford should have known better.
“As a Black man you always have to cross your T’s and dot your I’s or they will come get you on a technicality like this,” Williams said. “I don’t think our community could have taken another lawmaker going down. Derrick
Smith was just convicted a few weeks ago on corruption charges. People are down on the political process out here. This would have just made things worse.” Days after his arrest, Ford appeared at a West Side press conference surrounded by other ministers proclaiming his complete innocence. His attorney, Thomas Anthony Durkin said his client was vindicated despite the guilty plea. He said he was “very happy” with the result of the case and praised prosecutors for not taking the matter to trial. Prosecutors contend Ford overreported the amount of money he spent to rehab a single-family house in the Austin neighborhood. The result was a $3,700 tax loss for the IRS. Prosecutors say Ford used the funds to pay other bills like car loans, credit cards, casino payments and his 2006 election campaign. U.S. District Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer has set Ford’s sentencing for Nov. 7. Throughout his indictment, Ford has maintained a strong presence in the House. He confessed to Pallmeyer though that since his indictment, he had been seeing a medical doctor to treat anxiety associated with the case.
Judge Hubbard’s supporters concerned about a fair trial then slapped her on the left side of her face. Hubbard was not in court August 5 but Cook County Board of Review Commissioner Larry Rogers Jr., a close friend of Hubbard’s, did attend the preliminary exam. “She is doing as good as can be expected but is still very much in shock over the incident,” Rogers said. “She wanted me to come to court to thank her supporters and to tell them she is slowly recovering.” Hubbard was the first woman elected to head the National Bar Association. He is alleged to have shouted “Rosa Parks move!” before assaulting the judge. Dozens of Hubbard supporters converged on the 26th Street and California courtroom. Zakiyyah S. Muhammad was among them. “This man will regret the day he spit on Judge Hubbard. When he spit on her he spit on all of us,” Muhammad said after the court hearing wearing a Rose Parks Tshirt. “We are all Rosa Parks.” Stephanie Gadlin, a spokeswoman for the Chicago Teachers Union, who recently organized a Black women’s forum, said the case should be moved out of Cook County court. “We believe this is a federal hate crime and should be handled on a federal level to ensure justice is served,” Gadlin said. McCarthy. “We need our best and brightest as commanders. Glenn Evans is one of my favorites.” But complaints and lawsuits against Evans are not uncommon. In 2009, Rennie Simmons was awarded a $99,999 settlement from the city of Chicago after suing the city for what he said was a false battery charge filed against him by then-Lt. Evans. Since 2006, city records showed Evans had misconduct complaints filed against him that did not result in any disciplinary action. Unlike McCarthy, Tio Hardiman, executive director of the non-

Commander Glenn Evans probably believes that he’s above the law since there were no consequences for his actions,” Hardiman told the Crusader. “State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez should act swiftly and immediately to file charges against this tyrant of a police commander.” Evans was unavailable for comment.

EDITORIAL IT’S TIME FOR PARENT POWER! The ongoing saga of youth violence seems to be escalating without abatement in certain communities contrary to what some authorities are saying. In Chicago, for example, the police and other city authorities claim that crime is down, but you couldn’t convince people who live in what is now derisively referred to as “Chiraq” of that notion. In some communities, gunfire can be heard on a nightly basis. One eyewitness recently reported a situation wherein young men were just walking down the street randomly shooting at nothing in particular. This situation is not confined to one urban area, however. African Americans, in particular, are seemingly under siege everywhere, not only by uncaring, gentrification-minded bureaucrats, but by members of their own communities. We are literally afraid of ourselves and our children, and we are afraid for our children. Almost all of the pundits and others who proclaim a modicum of wisdom continually point to elected officials and public servants to make things right in Black communities. Though if the will were actually present, gains in this regard could be made, however, it is not the whole story. There will never be, now or in the future, significant change in the Black community if parents don’t become involved! There is a statement attributed to the great African American abolitionist Frederick Douglass that sums everything up: “Power concedes nothing without demand. It never did and it never will.” It is patently ridiculous for people to ask those who have shown obvious disdain for them to help in actually alleviating negative conditions. That lies in the hands of community residents themselves. The foundation of a community is the family unit, and family units almost always have parents of one kind or another in them. They are the navigators, the way showers, the protectors and providers; at least, that’s what they should be. Parents, therefore, can be the source of significant change on just about every issue that faces us. Is there a lack of jobs for Black youth? Parents can collectively hold elected officials and others accountable to ensure that jobs are available. Are schools in the toilet? Once again, parents can rally their collective forces to do something about this issue as well. Is police brutality out of hand? Parents can participate in activities that can help people understand the power of collective action to fight this trend. Is the dropout problem contributing to a spike in juvenile crime? Once again, what are parents of those youth doing about this? Have they instilled in their children the value of education? Are there books in the home? Do children see their parents actually reading them? Are parents modeling proper behaviors in domestic situations? Are male parents teaching boys how to be good fathers and role models so that families can remain intact? Are mothers modeling behaviors that will help their daughters navigate the world with knowledge to make wise choices? Are families teaching the meaning of love? It seems that the answer to many of these questions is NO, if the condition of urban communities can serve as a gauge. So, what is the problem? Parents, grown adults who have given birth to children, are not aware of the power that they have. There is a saying that you can raise up a child the way that you want it to be…they will often not stray too far from what they were taught. Are Black parents actually raising their children properly? Parents are the backbone of communities, and because of this, there should be no problem with schools, with dropouts, with everescalating crime among youth, with unemployment, domestic violence and more. Parents do not have to wait for someone to do something for them and their progeny, they can demand change by actively participating in their children’s lives, as well as in any other areas that effect communities. Parents need to stand up and take control of their lives and, hence, the lives of their offspring and their communities. After all, all politics are local and change can be made to happen. Parent Power is long overdue! A luta continua. 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Frank Thomas was refreshing Dear Editor: Frank Thomas’ remarks at his recent induction into Major League Baseball’s (MLB) Hall of Fame reminded me again why I love that sport so much. Of course the game has changed over the years but Thomas was a throwback to the days when it was a game, before it became a business. I particularly enjoyed his message to youngsters as he explained nothing good comes without perspective, hard work and dedication. He also seemed very genuine in thanking his teammates, managers and coaches, but also his parents. I can’t convey how great it sounded when he talked about the influence of his mother AND father. Too often young Black men, many who become pro athletes, only know or acknowledge one parent, the mother. Unless my memory is failing Frank Thomas was one of those athletes who were never in the sports section or news section for behaving badly – on or off the field. Of course that is what an athlete is supposed to do, but that is not what always happens. You had to be touched by his words that were at one point accompanied by tears of joy. He was so humble in accepting the honor that only a few hundred men in the history of the country have at-
tained. In short, Frank Thomas epitomized everything a young athlete, regardless of his or her sport should strive to be. Of course he was correct when he said there are no shortcuts to becoming the best. He became the best at his craft and never seemed compelled to brag about it or show off when he blasted a homer or made a diving catch. He understood how fortunate he was to be in the majors. Don’t get excited about polls Dear Editor: I see there is another poll out talking about whether Karen Lewis from the teachers union can beat Rahm Emanuel in the next mayoral race. There was a poll several weeks ago that said Toni Preckwinkle could beat the man in a one-onone race. I can’t believe how much conversation these polls get at my barber shop. There are always some pretty sharp people there, but so many of them seem to forget, or maybe they don’t know what a poll is. Basically it is a snapshot in time. Polls are a reflection of what is going on in a person’s life at the moment he or she is being asked those questions. Whether you are one-month old or 100 years old, your circum-

stances can change in a second. You will react differently with each change. In short what a person feels about a candidate will change many times in the course of seven months. The other reality is people often lie when polled. There are no consequences so people don’t feel compelled to share their innermost political leanings. What might be the most overlooked yet critical factor about (Continued on page 13)

COMMENTARY
The EPA Has Failed to Consider Our Economy Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford Earlier this summer, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released new regulations intended to reduce carbon emissions from America’s power plants. It’s now become clear that a measure we’ve been told will do good in our communities will actually be among the most impactful policies passed in our time—and not for the better. Last week, EPA visited just four cities—Atlanta, Denver, Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C.—to solicit input on the proposed carbon regulations. This will be the only opportunity, besides submitting written comments, for the American people to weigh in on the proposal. While I and members of my organization hoped to testify and share our concerns about how these regulations will impact the Black business community, the spots filled up in minutes. This wasn’t surprising, as EPA’s carbon regulations are both complex and unprecedented. While many came forward to express misgivings about the proposal and its impact on their constituencies, the hearings appeared to be overrun with environmental groups that
Harry C. Alford seem hardly concerned about the high price our community will pay if these regulations move forward. EPA’s carbon regulations seek to override state authority by prescribing a specific energy mix for each state. The regulations, as proposed, will effectively eliminate coal-based power generation, which also happens to be the most abundant and affordable energy source in the U.S. I fear that by moving too quickly in a direction toward more costly ener-
gy sources, the EPA has failed to consider the economic consequences inherent in its proposal. Our small businesses are the lifeblood of America, and they sustain our communities, supporting the livelihoods of owners and employees. Black small business owners have faced more challenges than most and deserve the support of their leaders as they grow and develop their operations. Unfortunately, EPA’s proposed carbon regulations will do just the opposite. By causing utility rates to rise, these regulations will create an impossible environment for economic development, instead of fostering growth. And when the price of electricity rises, prices of goods will rise across the board. For low-income families, too many of whom are AfricanAmerican, electricity bills are already a monthly struggle to afford without sinking into debt. This is the wrong time to implement policy that will surely hurt lower- and middle-class families the hardest. We need to invest in our communities through job creation and economic empowerment, not by imposing policy that knowingly pushes families’ monthly budgets to the brink. I want our government to do everything it can to empower inno-
vation among Black entrepreneurs. We’re blessed to live in a country that has recently experienced a manufacturing renaissance, spurred in large part by the innovation intrinsic to the very fabric of America. The uptick in manufacturing is closely tied to having an all-of-theabove energy portfolio and the lowcost power diverse energy use affords. We cannot take this for granted. We need to utilize all sources at our disposal from coal to wind, natural gas to solar, hydro power to nuclear. It would be irresponsible for us to sit by while EPA dictates that we must use the most expensive and least reliable energy sources. I spend a great deal of time worrying about the future of the Black community. This is, in large part, because the median household income has decreased for AfricanAmerican families since the economic crash in 2008. And I became all the more concerned when learning of the EPA’s dangerous carbon regulations that will increase energy costs that in turn create a domino effect of job losses, higher bills and a bleak economic future. The Black community should pay close attention to the debate as it unfolds and call for our government to invest in
Black business owners, workers and families; not leave us struggling to survive. They seem to smile when we claim small business will hurt. It is like the EPA and radical environmental extremists get a “kick” out of the idea. Increased poverty is not the way to make the world a safer place. It brings poor health which isn’t what they say their mission is. It brings crime and violence. It makes America less than it can be. My people, we must rise to this threat and fight it with all we have. The phony hearings, false science and claims should be challenged. Contact your political leaders and ask them don’t they see this coming? We are going to fight this in the fashion we used to fight Cap and Trade legislation. We defeated it even when both the Senate and Congress were controlled by the White House. It will take some time but in the end we all must be fierce and unrelenting in our activities against this very severe threat to our communities. Obviously, they didn’t because Mondale lost the general election by a large margin to Ronald Reagan. Knowing that in a president’s second-term, the party in power usually loses 29 House seats, along with the real possibility of Democrats losing control of the Senate this year, some party leaders are trying to give the appearance they are in control and Democrats will buck that historical voting trend. In an interview with a group of African American reporters last week, for example, Rep. Steve Israel (D-N.Y.), chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, described how much better positioned Democrats are this year compared to past off-year elections. He spoke of the DCCC hiring a diversity director for the first time, adding a national voter training director, creating an Internet platform for vendors of color and allowing resumes to be dropped off in the field. In other words, he talked about the kind of things smart butt White boys talk about. My fear is www.chicagocrusader.com
that another group of smart butt White boys will lead Democrats down the path of defeat unless the strategists reverse course. The upcoming mid-term election may be yet another example of Black voters never getting the credit they deserve winning seats for the party but getting an overabundance of blame when Democrats get their heads handed to them. The Washington Post, carried a story under the headline, “Will Black voters be House Democrats’ midterm firewall?” In the story, Israel noted that in 15 of the top 25 districts being targeted by the DCCC, Blacks make up at least 10 percent of the voting-age population, enough to provide the margin of victory. “We have a unique challenge in offsetting drop off with African American voters, with Hispanic voters, and with young female voters,” Israel said. “So we’re tackling those challenges head on.” In the meeting with reporters, Israel mentioned efforts from getting commercials cut by First Lady Michelle Obama to getting Black voters to sign cards committing them to vote in November. As Election Day nears, those cards will be mailed back to prospective voters, hoping that action will get them to turn up at the polls. The most troubling aspect of the exchange with Israel was that he
George E. Curry appears to be putting more faith in such long-shot gimmicks as voter commitment cards than reaching the Black community through the Black Press. In fact, when pressed on the issue of utilizing Black media, Israel said while there may be some Black media buys, “The vast majority of our budget is spent on one thing – that is buying television time. That’s it.” That may be “it” for Democrats in November if they think the best way to reach Black voters is to lump them in with everyone else
who watches TV. Even if television reaches more Black voters than Black newspapers, radio stations, magazines and Internet sites, it is not as trusted by African Americans as the Black Press. As a Nielsen study found, “Companies mistakenly believe there are no language barriers, that a general market ‘one-size-fits-all’ strategy is an effective way to reach African-Americans. Just the opposite is true.” If smart butt White boys are as smart as they think, they would recognize that in the Black community, the messenger is as important as the message. And that is not limited to the Black Press. It also applies to the largely Whitecontrolled 527 organizations established in recent elections that acted as though they knew more about our community than grass root organizations that are on the ground every day, yet continue to struggle for funding. Democrats face another hurdle – 67 percent of the Democratic base does not know there is a mid-term election in November, according to polling done for the DCCC by Cornel Belcher, an African American. In addition, a poll conducted by the Pew Research Center in July found: “Currently, 45 percent of registered voters who plan to support the Republican in their district say they are more enthusiastic
Blacks Must control their own coMMunity
about voting than in prior congressional elections; that compares with 37 percent of those who plan to vote for the Democratic candidate.” Democrats need to give Blacks something to vote for rather than overly relying on Republican calls for impeachment to motivate the Black base. According to an analysis of the Black vote by the Associated Press, African Americans voted at a higher rate than Whites in 2008 and 2012. Obviously, having Barack Obama’s name on the ballot was a key factor. Blacks can vote at high levels again in 2014 if they understand the success or failure of Obama’s last two years in office will be determined by who gets elected in November. But if Democrats stubbornly stick to relying on television to reach Black voters, they will lose in 2014 just as smart butt White boys lost 30 years ago.

DR. KAMBON AND AFRICAN CENTERED PSYCHOLOGY Dr. Conrad Worrill, Director/Professor, Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS) located at 700 East Oakwood Blvd, Chicago, Illinois, 60653, 773-268-7500, Fax: 773-268-3835 E-mail: c-worrill@neiu.edu, Website: www.ccicschicago.org, Twitter: @CCICS_ Chicago.
Dr. Conrad Worrill On Saturday, July 26, 2014, the Communiversity hosted Dr. Kobi Kambon in a special workshop on African Centered Psychology at the Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies of Northeastern Illinois University. The Communiversity is an independent study group that has been meeting at CCICS since 1969. The Commu-
niversity, over the years, has sponsored numerous African centered workshops on a variety of subjects. This article is a review of Dr. Kambon’s first book, The African Personality in America: An African Centered Framework. As I have repeated in these columns on numerous occasions, the African centered consciousness and the African Centered Movement is critical to the liberation of African people worldwide. The rise of African centered consciousness in our movement, for the liberation of African people in America, can be partially attributed to the research, teaching, and writing of the African centered scholars over the last forty years. In this connection, Dr. Kobi Kambon’s book, The African Personality in America: An African Centered Framework, adds to this growing body of African centered scholarship that is providing African people, throughout the world, with the intellectual weaponry needed to continue the fight against white supremacy and European domination. Dr. Kambon is a retired professor of psychology, and former Chairman of the Psychology Department, at Florida A &M University. The Department of Psychology he led is known for developing the only African centered training program in an American college or university.
In developing this stream of African centered scholarship, Dr. Kambon acknowledges two of his very special mentors, the late great Dr. Bobby Wright and the late great Dr. Jacob H. Carruthers. Dr. Kambon explains that “I encountered these two brilliant and dedicated African/Master Warriors early enough in my development that they could exert a powerful nationalist influence on my thinking.” This profound book has three fundamental themes that have been conceptionalized by Dr. Kambon in an African centered context. The first theme he asserts is “that there is indeed an African reality system that is not only indigenous to Africans in America, but that most of us are almost totally unaware of it and how it determines our very lives.” Dr. Kambon’s second theme is related to the model presented in this book that “asserts that the average African in America operates/functions in a mentally disordered state, on a daily basis, engendered by white supremacy domination over our African cultural reality here in America.” The final theme he addresses is “that in order for we Africans to escape and heal ourselves from this virtually unbelievable predicament of pervasive mental disorder, we must rebuild our African cultural infrastructure throughout the diasporian African community.
Dr. Kambon “sounds the alarm to awaken the African world from its virtually stuporous state of Cultural Misorientation, but also proposed how we might, or rather must, begin the awakening and recovery process.” In other words, he explains we must reverse this mentacidal process. The concept of “Mentacide” developed by Dr. Bobby Wright is “the deliberate and systematic destruction of a person’s or group’s mind.” There is no question that at this stage in history we are in a battle to reclaim the African mind, spirit, and culture so that our rightful place in the world can be restored. I would suggest that all students and teachers in the growing African Centered Education Movement, particularly those in the field of psychology, read this book immediately. It is the kind of book that should be read in study groups that allow for serious discussion and exchange of the many concepts and ideas presented by Dr. Kambon. Dr. Kambon states that the overall thrust of his book is to attempt “to address the argument that in order to restore African Self-Consciousness as a viable force within the African psyche, we have to revitalize the deeply rooted African collective consciousness / unconsciousness / spirituality through reconstructed traditional African cultural infrastructure.”
Continuing on this point, he further explains that “Because African self-consciousness was almost completely erased or wiped out by the Maafa (African holocaust of Eurasian enslavement-colonialism) we, the contemporary African world community; we must complete the arduous task of rebuilding and preserving African Nationhood.” I remember that Malcolm X was asked repeatedly by reporters and people in audiences where he spoke on why he, talked about and, made reference to Africa so much. Malcolm always replied in this manner— “Because you left your mind in Africa.” This appropriate response by Malcolm X is the underlying spirit and direction of The African Personality in America: An African Centered Framework by Dr. Kobi Kambon. In the Spring 1975 issue of the Black Books Bulletin, Dr. Anderson Thompson wrote an insightful article entitled, “Developing an African Historiography.” Dr. Thompson wrote that, “The interpretation, writing, and teaching of history from an African frame of reference, prepares the African masses to face the challenges of the 21st century.” Dr. Kobi Kambon’s book continues to fit into the category of preparing us to face the challenges of the 21st century. Read it carefully and digest its contents. It is a must!
ECONOMIC GROWTH IS UP – WILL IT TRICKLE DOWN? By Julianne Malveaux Last quarter’s rate of economic growth is good news, especially after the economy stalled, losing momentum in the first quarter of 2014. Many said it was an aberration, caused by bad weather, especially since economic growth in the last half of 2013 was more than three percent. On the surface the economy is, indeed, recovering, not only because of growth rates, but because other indicators (excepting unemployment) are positive signs. Of course, consumer spending explains two-thirds of economic growth. If people don’t put their money into the economy, buying durable goods like cars and refrigerators and non-durable goods like clothing and food, the economy stalls. Yet while the economy is growing overall, the 99 percent have captured most of the growth. Wages have not yet risen, and according to one report, job creation dropped from 281,000 in June to 218,000 the month before. As of this writing, unem6

ployment data has not been released. But here’s what we do know – the Dow Jones industrial average is under 10,000 as of 2009; it has grown by 60 percent in 2014. In contrast the official unemployment rate in 2009 dropped by a third, indicating that those at the top have gained more in recovery than those at the bottom. How can the stock market expand so rapidly while the bottom 99 percent are stuck? Low wages mean high profits. Some of the stock market gains that have been realized are a function of wages that have not increased. Indeed, some corporations have chosen to move their headquarters away from the United States. Fortune Magazine’s Alan Sloan reports that Ireland, Bermuda and Switzerland are the tax havens for the top ten corporate tax avoiders. While these companies hit the road to avoid taxes, they have no hesitation in enjoying the benefits that come from tax protection, and regulation. These corporations underpay
Dr. Julianne Malveaux their workers, who supplement their inadequate wages with government-funded income subsidies (like food and housing assistance). When these companies need securities protection, they don’t hesitate to use the SEC (securities and exchange commission) though the United States government pays for that regulatory agency. While these corporations operate like foreign corpo-
rations for tax purposes, they expect the services of the United States government for their protection. Meanwhile, the leaders of these companies are some of those who argue for lower estate taxes, and lower taxes for the wealthy. Give me a break! These corporations are ripping off United States taxpayers in two ways. First, they don’t pay taxes on the benefits they receive. Secondly, their advocacy to cut personal taxes is yet another attack on the tax base. Those in the bottom 80 percent gain little from the Securities Exchange Commission and other financial regulatory agencies. They gain little from the regulatory agencies that force corporations to play nice. They’ll pay for these regulatory agencies because they are part of the budget, part of the tax bill. Can we do something about this? Either those corporate deserters should be heavily taxed before they go (or their products should be taxed), giving their competitors an advantage be-

cause of lower prices. Similarly, the companies who choose to stay in the United States ought to gain a tax benefit for their loyalty. The tax system can be used to level the playing field. Some legislators get it, but too many use the free market excuse to say their hands are tied. Legislation that prevents corporate rip-offs makes sense, but it is likely to be swallowed by the legislative gridlock that is a permanent feature of this Congress. As long as runaway corporations push their tax burden on the rest of us, economic recovery is rushing up instead of trickling down. Julianne Malveaux is a D.C. based economist and author.

Dancing for a good cause Chicago’s iconic dance honors the legendary Mr. Herb Kent, “The Cool Gent” The Next Step College Readiness Program with mentoring support for teen moms and teen dads held its first annual “Stepping for the Children” benefit on Friday, July 11 at the Oak Lawn Hilton Hotel, 9333 S. Cicero Avenue. The fundraising event honored Chicago radio icon and living legend Herb Kent, “The Cool Gent,” with a night of Chicago-style Stepping. Proceeds from the benefit helped to establish an Educational Achievement Award in Kent’s name and raised funds for the Next Step program, which is working to break the cycle of generational teen pregnancy. Kent presented this award to a Next Step student. Next Step helps pregnant and
parenting teens complete high school and go to college. Pregnancy is the foremost reason that teen girls drop out of high school. Of the teen mothers that give birth before 18, only 38 percent graduate from high school and less than two percent of teen mothers attain a college degree by the age of 30. Research has shown that teen pregnancy has a negative influence on the educational attainment of teen fathers making it difficult for them to be financially or emotionally supportive of themselves or their children. Although the U.S. national pregnancy rate for all teens age 15-19 has declined, the pregnancy rate among Black and Hispanic teen

Malcolm X College’s Urban Male encourages success As students gear up for the busy back-to-school season, many new college students will head off to school equipped with the latest technology and other trunk party staples, as well as the support of family members cheering them on to succeed. In contrast, others such as many of the young men in the Urban Male Initiative at Malcolm X College (UMI), will have to capitalize on something far less tangible but equally valuable. UMI was created to provide mentorship, support and encouragement to male students to help increase their academic success. “As a young man, I was extremely fortunate to have several strong male mentors who made a difference in my life,” said Marlon Haywood, a Health Disparities Fellow at Rush University and Malcolm X College who developed UMI and serves as its program director. “That’s the reason I’m so passionate about this work.” Haywood, an Englewood native, teaches an Urban Male College Success course at Malcolm X College to help young men become acclimated to the college environment and familiar with the various tools needed to succeed. Many of the participants in the College Success class are the first in their families to attend college. The UMI became a natural extension of the class, helping to pro-
vide information and guidance in other areas of the young men’s lives. UMI achieves its goals through a collaborative set of mentorship programs designed to support the academic and social endeavors of student participants. Robert Moses, who recently completed an Associate’s degree at Malcolm X College, was raised in Bronzeville by his grandmother and never knew his father. When he was asked a year ago to help encourage other young male students at Malcolm X College to join the (UMI), he was skeptical. He wondered why he was chosen for the task and what influence he could possibly have on others, as he had never been particularly outgoing. According to Haywood, Moses was chosen to help represent UMI because he was a good example of the type of student that would benefit most from the program. Moses’ untapped leadership potential was evident and Haywood was determined to help Moses see it for himself. Moses started out at a four-year college and admits that he was not academically or socially prepared and that, consequently, he did not do well. Moses soon quit school and started working full time, but after a year, decided he wanted to give school another try. He chose Malcolm X College because he said he felt a connection to the school.
PARTICIPANTS FROM MALCOLM X COLLEGE’S Urban Male Initiative (UMI) photographed with Chicago native and Actor/Producer/Director Robert Townsend (standing, third from right). Moses said his college advisors were helpful but that his leadership skills did not fully kick in until he joined UMI and started interacting with others in the program. He felt supported and hopeful this time around. With his newfound confidence, Moses became excited about education and learning and was soon chosen as UMI’s first president and later, was voted vice president for the Student Government Associ-
ation at Malcolm X College (and later, President). Soon, Moses’ reputation for leadership was widespread and he was voted as the vice president of the Student Government Association across the entire City Colleges of Chicago district, which encompasses seven colleges. Moses said UMI also taught him the importance of listening to others. He found that listening was a key skill that led to connecting with others in
a meaningful way. Through the program, he began visiting elementary schools to encourage young students to make the most of their academic opportunities. Moses was recently accepted into the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he will major in Education and hopes to become an elementary school teacher. He is an alumni member of UMI and plans to stay involved and to continue mentoring others.
SSC seeks volunteers for adult literacy program Celebrate International Literacy Day by becoming a volunteer tutor! South Suburban College is seeking tutors and participants for the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program. The program is structured to train volunteers to become one-onone tutors for adults in need of basic literacy skills. Instruction in basic literacy includes the development of phonetic reading skills combined with communication skills. SSC is encouraging residents to take this
opportunity to volunteer as a tutor or encourage someone you know to take advantage of this free program. New tutor-training sessions will take place on the Main Campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. from August 26 through September 11 in Room 1243c. The tutor training is an 18hour program that culminates with literacy training certification. Once
certified, the tutors will go out to visit their adult learners at locations in or near their neighborhoods. Tutoring sites have already been established at the following locations: Acorn Public Library, Oak Forest; Calumet City Public Library; Grande Prairie Library, Hazel Crest; South Holland Public Library; South Suburban College Library, Main Campus; Oak Forest Center Library; Lansing

Public Library; Dolton Public Library; and Midlothian Public Library. Tutoring is scheduled by the availability of the tutors and the learners, and the availability of space and hours of the tutoring sites. Illiteracy is an issue that can be debilitating in so many ways for adults who never received the proper instruction. Adults who are unable to read have a much more difficult time with many daily activities that others may take for granted, along with a clear disadvantage in today’s competitive job market. SSC’s Division of Adult Education administers the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program in addition to High School Equivalency (HSE), English as a Second Language (ESL), and Adult Basic Education (ABE). Tutors will receive one free professional development hour through this program in Adult Education, Reading, Writing, and many other subjects. Successful tutors are also eligible for letters of support or recommendation for jobs, scholarships, educational opportunities, and more. These opportunities are made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a division of the Office of Secretary of State, using state funds designated

for literacy. In just its third year of operation, SSC’s Adult Volunteer Literacy Program has enlisted hundreds of volunteers to date and is already an award-winning program, earning two prestigious Spotlight on Service (SOS) Awards from the Secretary of State and Illinois Press Association. Volunteer tutor Mary Gercken won an SOS Award in 2012 and a literacy learner Tennie Fitts won the Spotlight on Achievement SOS Award in 2013. Gerken and Fitts are featured in a video accessible on YouTube entitled Improving Lives through Literacy. Also featured is author Ruth J. Colvin, a 96-year-old SSC alumnus. Common promotes new anti-violence CD By J. Coyden Palmer Hundreds of fans lined up outside a South Side urban apparel store recently to meet rapper/actor Common whose newest CD “Nobody’s Smiling” was released earlier this month. Common also teamed up with the Chicago Bulls Joakim Noah for an anti-violence cam-
paign called “Stand up Chicago,” which also featured Derrick Rose. His love for his music and his city will always have a priority Common told the Crusader during an exclusive interview at DTLR, located at 1727 E. 95th Street in the Stony Island Plaza. The new CD, his 10th, has a much grittier edge than previous Common albums.
The rambunctious beats, along with Common’s lyrics, have made it a hit with teenage fans and longtime rap supporters in their 40’s. With lyrics that are undoubtedly his most aggressive and darkest to date, “Nobody’s Smiling” talks about the culture of violence in (Continued on page 19)

By Elaine Hegwood Bowen, MSJ By Raymond Ward CHICAGO’S VERY OWN: Harry Lennix, who played the general in the Superman flick, “Man of Steel” and the assistant director of the FBI Counter terrorism Division on NBC’s “The Blacklist” has quietly become a prolific producer with three movie projects already completed. “I decided that I needed to take control,” the Chicago native told Variety. Harry has starred in and financed “H4,” a street version of William Shakespeare’s “Henry IV,” “Mr. Sophistication,” chronicling the journey of a stand-up comedian inspired by Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor, and “Revival,” a gospel concert movie starring Mali Music, described by Lennix as “Jesus Christ Superstar” meets “The Wiz.” With longtime associate Steve Harris, the duo has formed Exponent Media Group and made a distribution deal for “H4” and the concert movie to be shown through Nehst Media’s Digiplex chain early next year. He’s assembling investors for a film fund with plans for five more films over the next three years in the $1 million range. “It wasn’t easy to get this far—-Steve and I are just two guys from Chicago,” he added. “What we want to do is make good quality films that we actually want to make for a price.” Lennix acknowledges that he’s been able to work regularly in movies, TV and stage over the last three decades with credits including TV roles in “Commander in Chief,” “24” and “ER” and film roles in “State of

I just wish I’d thought of this 20 years ago.” Nehst CEO Larry Meistrich and Digiplex CEO Bud Mayo both said they believe Lennix can deliver to audiences hungry for alternative programming. “We’re going to give his films a limited release, but they won’t be tiny,” Meistrich added. “Harry is providing movies that are not clichéd.”

“GET ON DOWN”: If you have NOT seen,“Get On Up” the film based upon the life of Soul Brother Number One James Brown and starring Chadwick Boseman, I suggest that you get on down to a theater NOW! The film is incredible and of course Chadwick gives an award-winning performance as does, Academy Award-winner Octavia Spencer, Nelsan Ellis of “True Blood” fame, two-time Academy Award nominee, Viola Davis and singer Jill Scott. This film will have you dancing in your seat and yelling “please, please, PLEASE” don’t end!

the background, Boseman is to be commended for having all the swagger and speech and physical mannerisms of Brown to make this movie one to be watched during this upcoming Oscar season. Boseman has been hitting his strides with movies of late, including “42,” where he portrayed baseball great Jackie Robinson. In “Get on Up,” backers that include rock star Mick Jagger show many aspects of Brown’s life—as a poor back woods, snotty-nosed, starving country kid, superstar, social activist and womanizer, as well as woman beater. Rapper Black Thought plays one of The Flames, and Nelsan Ellis, the Harvey native who plays Bobby Byrd, is great as the second man to Brown’s stardom. Jill Scott plays one of Brown’s wives, Dee Dee, whom he physically abuses, as she helps him count his money and raise his young son Teddy. Film great Viola Davis plays his estranged mother, Susie, and Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer as Aunt Honey are great in their roles. It seems, however, that I have seen Davis play this role before in the movie “Antwone Fisher.” After Susie abandons Brown and his abusive father, she shows up when he is performing at the Apollo Theater in New York. He poignantly gives her the brush off, in a nice, easy way, as she was so quick to give him up when he was a child. As he is sitting there
him, after she had put him up for adoption. Both times, with few words but many tears, Davis portrays a mother who is torn and tormented about the decisions she had made regarding her sons. In Brown’s case, he has much to offer a mother whom he barely knows, but he bravely faces her and writes her off, even though he later looks out for her. He also has other movie projects coming up soon. Boseman has hit the ball out of the park again with “Get On Up,” and although many times a person was hard pressed to understand what Brown was saying, there is no confusion with this movie. Southsider Faith Walls enjoyed the movie. “‘Get On Up’ is a movie that both the young and old can watch and appreciate, not only because of its history but also for the outstanding acting,” she said. “It is a movie that will surely become a part of my personal library when it becomes available on DVD.” Another moviegoer longtime Beverly resident Audrey Clay was impressed with the movie and excited about the soundtrack. “‘Get On Up’ is great and everyone should see it twice—once to enjoy the movie and again to get on up

GET ON UP! A Review by Bonnie DeShong I had an idea that the story of James Brown was going to be good, it had to be, being the story of “The Godfather of Soul,” but this film was more than good, it is FUNKY! The film begins with James Brown right before he is arrested in Augusta, Georgia for firing a shotgun and evading police. The film then bounces back and forth throughout time, somewhat in the way James Brown’s feet would move when he danced across the stage. There is one main reason why this film works; Chadwick Boseman. He channeled Brown’s spirit, attitude, speech, and splits. I can’t imagine anyone else who could take this role and not allow it to intimidate him. From the first frame to the last we see James Brown. The supporting cast does just that, support. It is truly an ensemble that came together to lift up and helped Boseman give a solid
performance, therefore, making a soulful film. Viola Davis as Brown’s mom, gives a performance that makes you shed tears. I loved Octavia Spencer as Aunt Honey, the woman who raised and encouraged Brown, in her own way. Jill Scott as one of Brown’s wives worked her part. However, there were a few performances that stuck out with me and I am sure will be overlooked but were the salt and pepper of the film for me. Jamarion and Jordan Scott played the young boy James Brown or “Junior.” In the roles played by these young men is where we first see Brown’s confidence and love of music. They opened the door, allowing us to see into the heart of James Brown. The other actor we see often but may not know his name, it’s Nelsan Ellis who plays Brown’s best and really only true friend, Bobby Byrd. We all heard James Brown yell out the name “Bobby!” but who was he? I am a major fan of Nelsan and he never disappoints

Eldzier Cortor works on display until August 25 The South Side Community Art Center (SSCAC) opened the exhibition Transcending Times: Works by Eldzier Cortor on July 27 with a talk featuring the son of the master artist/printmaker and one of the founders of the SSCAC. Michael Cortor joined Sarah Kelly Oehler, associate curator of American Art, Art Institute of Chicago; Artist Candace Hunter and Rebecca Zorach, professor, University of Chicago for the panel discussion held at the SSCAC. The reception and talk drew over 150 people to the Center where Cortor’s work will be on display through August 25. A graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago, Cortor at 98, is still a practicing artist who weaves a social and political vision into his work. Works on display are also for sale with a portion of the proceeds benefitting SSCAC. Cortor’s work was described by the panelist as social activism, the influence of which can be traced to current day Chicago artist. Cortor’s artistic style merges the influences of both traditional African art and European Surrealism and he was among the first artist to prominently incorporate the African American female form into his work. Cortor’s work was said to be ‘must own’ for many Chicago collectors and is prominently featured in the collection of the Chicago Art Institute, where Oehler will be curating an exhibit of his work in 2015. www.chicagocrusader.com

Michael said his father reminisces fondly about his time in Chicago that includes being a student at Englewood High School. He spoke extensively about the intricate carvings Cortor created for his prints, the intricacy of the process and how his father continues to create art with the same attention to detail today. “Cortor’s work has always been deeply influenced by the social, political and economic challenges of the particular era in which he was creating,” said Sammie Dortch, SSCAC Board President. “The SSCAC is thrilled to display our founders’ work and serve as a catalyst for these relevant conversations.” During the 1930s, Cortor found work with the Federal Art Project of the WPA, and in 1941, was one
of the founding artists of the SSCAC. Cortor exhibited in the 1938 interracial show “An Exhibition in Defense of Peace and Democracy,” which was sponsored by the Chicago Artists’ Group. SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING
A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe The J.O.Y. in giving—Jesus— Others and Yourself. According to Rev. Clay Evans, that is the order that will bring individuals most happiness. Although, receiving is a part of giving—the good book clearly shares the message that it is much more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35). Perhaps this is why the central bible theme is ‘God so loved the world that He gave…’(John 3:16). During a taping on the Broadcast Minister’s Alliance with Archbishop Lucius Hall, Rev. Evans mentioned that his rationale in launching the Clay Evans Scholarship Foundation, Inc. was to bring joy to the lives of college students needing financial assistance. As a result of this God given vision, for the past 34 years, thousands of students across the country have benefited by attending the college of their choice. Rev. Evans further explained that the acronym for J.O.Y. is Jesus first—others second and then you rank last place. In fact, this order of
Effie Rolfe service not only guarantees a life of fulfillment but also it should be the dominant sequence in any productive Christian’s life. Jesus first, others second and yourself last. Studies show those who live a life of service—experience more happiness and fulfillment than those who only concentrate on themselves. ‘If I Can
Help Somebody—then my living will not be in vain’ is a classic song that Rev. Evans models his life by each day. Rev. Clay Evan’s name will live on because his life has been about giving. Not only has he ordained more than 90 ministers and one being among the first female—the late Rev. Consuella York, but also, he continues to share by mentoring as well as the scholarship fund. The question remains, what is your area of service? Maybe it’s participating in the neighborhood and church food pantries, prison and jail ministries. Perhaps you can show a young lady how to cook a meal, apply make-up or how to successfully interview for a job. Identify a male without a father and show him how to change a flat tire, check the car’s fluids, how to cut the lawn or to do various things around the house. Regardless of the simplicity, just do something. When my mom used to take daily walks, she would carry a regular plastic bag to pick up trash from the sidewalk or streets along
the way. She didn’t wait for the streets to be cleaned—she initiated the process herself. This is a simple yet classic example that we are not to wait on anyone else. Any contributions you have to empower others will aid in a worthwhile contribution. When you give—God is glorified. Inevitably, you and your surroundings are blessed as well. Lastly, Rev. Evans often states that he wants to live in the hearts of people. He doesn’t want a building named after him or a street because they will be torn down and destroyed over time. Thus, he wants to be remembered through the hearts of people. That ideal is mentorship. When you build up another generation and preserve a legacy—it’s referred to as mentorship. This is one of the most important acts of kindness and responsibility that we can do as it is essential to our posterity. From Fortune 500 companies to small business as well as passing down recipes and the likes can only survive and
thrive through mentorship. Bottom line—it is your responsibility to help create an opportunity for someone else by lending a hand up. As you give, serve cheerfully as unto the Lord—when you serve others, know that you are really serving God. Matthew 25:30 state that, “…Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ Let’s roll up our sleeves and find a way to serve others because there is much work to be done. The quickest way to get real joy is to give of your resources, talents, time and gifting to others. Serve your way to greatness or take it to your grave. Do you have the J.O.Y. of giving...? ©Effie Rolfe is the author of “Supersize Your Thinking,” a Media Personality and Motivational Speaker. Mortgage rescue fraud crackdown brings State and Federal Lawsuits CFPB and FTC joined by 15 state Attorneys General By Charlene Crowell Although the rate of foreclosures nationwide has subsided, as of April this year, 694,000 homeowners were still in some form of foreclosure, according to Core Logic, a leading market analyst. Unfortunately, these consumers are also the targets of businesses charging costly, up-front fees for services that are never provided. On July 23, a coordinated state and federal enforcement action led to 41 lawsuits against these predatory operations. “Operation MisModification” was the name given to joint actions by 15 state attorneys general, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Together, these government officials filed 41 lawsuits charging deceptive marketing, false promises, and pocketing illegal fees. Alleged violations occurred between 2010 and December 2013. Businesses and principals typically told consumers they could lower their homeowners’ mortgage payments and interest rates – or – prevent foreclosures. In return, consumers were asked to pay as much as $4,000 in advance and incurred additional monthly fees ranging from $399-$500. Despite verbal promises, the businesses never submitted a loan modification application, nor
Charlene Crowell did they negotiate or perform promis- ed services. In some cases, consumers thought they were paying for legal representation; but never spoke to a lawyer. In others, such as in California, where law firms were involved, the California State Bar initially referred misconduct charges to the CFPB. For example, CFPB charged the Mortgage Law Group and the Consumer First Legal Group for taking in $19.2 million in fees from over 10,000 troubled homeowners nationwide. Most, if not all of these monies were advance fees charged for ‘loan modification services.’ With both firms now having ceased operations, CFPB is
seeking redress for harmed consumers from the firms’ principals. “We are taking on schemes that prey on consumers who are struggling to pay their mortgages or facing foreclosure,” said CFPB Director Richard Cordray. “These companies pocketed illegal fees – taking millions of hard-earned dollars from distressed consumers, and then left those consumers worse off than they began. These practices are not only illegal, they are reprehensible.” Participating attorneys general acted on behalf of consumers in: Arizona, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Washington, and Wisconsin. The FTC filed charges against six operations and its commission member votes were 5-0 to authorize staff to file complaints and seek additional relief against defendants. The only time FTC files a complaint is when it has ‘reason to believe’ that the law has been or is being violated and it further appears to the Commission that a proceeding is in the public’s interest. According to Katie Fallow, FTC’s deputy director for

consumer protection said of those charged, “Not only do they collect hundreds or thousands of dollars in upfront fees from homeowners and then not deliver any results; but they make the loss of people’s homes even more likely by telling consumers not to pay their mortgage or to take their lenders or servicers.” To avoid more consumers suffering a similar fate, CFPB issued a related consumers’ advisory. Specific warning signs for foreclosure relief scams and bogus legal help include: 1. Demands for payment up-front. Licensed attorneys can only receive up-front payments if they meet requirements about what they charge, how they deposit the money and only if they comply with all other state laws and regulations. 2. Any claim that a modification is guaranteed. Consumers should be wary of lawyers and others guaranteeing modifications. Your mortgage company must agree on any modification. 3. Pushy, hard sell tactics. Business representatives that urge consumers to sign documents before answering questions or explaining details is another warning sign. Lisa Madigan, Illinois Attorney General indicated that the deluge of lawsuits may yet lead to others. “My office has been – and will continue to be – aggressive in shutting down operations that prey on homeowners who are desperate for a lifeline.” Charlene Crowell is a communications manager with the Center for Responsible Lending. New Children’s Dental Van launched at Roseland Hospital United States Senator Dick Durbin was on hand July 25 as the Mobile C.A.R.E. Foundation (MCF) and Roseland Community Hospital (RCH) hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony that launched a full-service, state-ofthe-art Children’s Dental Van, which marked the beginning of a new chapter for both organizations. “Children in our community are suffering from a lack of access to quality dental care,” RCH President and Chief Executive Officer Tim Egan said. “Being able to provide this service for kids in need is absolutely a dream come true.” The Chicago Community Oral Health Forum states that “nearly 42 percent of people in the Chicago area suffer from inadequate dental care due to lack of insurance or affordable options.” So MCF and RCH have come to-
gether in an affiliation agreement to create the Roseland/MCF Dental Van. For over 15 years, MCF has provided comprehensive medical care to low-income children with the chronic, incurable disease asthma. Over that time, less than 5 percent of the 10,000+ Asthma Van patients have had to utilize a hospital or ER after enrollment, even as asthma remained the number one cause of pediatric hospitalization in Chicago. “Dental care is the next frontier,” says MCF Board Chair Jonathan Weatherly. “Four of five low-income children don’t receive necessary preventative oral health care, and there’s a lack of convenient dental homes for our patient population. Since we demonstrated such a successful clinic model with asthma, it only makes sense for us to take on this next big challenge in dental.”
THE NEW CHILDREN’S dental van at Roseland Hospital is such a welcome addition to the community health arsenal. Past and present elected officials helped hospital personnel celebrate the launch of the mobile unit this week. “Roseland Hospital is more than grants from an anonymous donor For Roseland Community Hospital, the Dental Van launch is the a building,” says RCH Board and the Polk Bros. (Continued from page 11) Chicago that has been around for generations and how it has led to present-day urban decay. “I know people will be surprised by the lyrics but I’m a very versatile rapper and the violence ripping entire communities and families apart is something that needs to be talked about in order to solve it,” he said. For “Nobody’s Smiling” he collaborated with No I.D., whom he has known since fourth grade. Common’s incredible storytelling gives those outside the city a peek at Chicago’s violence. Using musical samples from Notorious B.I.G. and police scanners, he delves through the history of Chicago violence, naming all of the longtime gangs that have caused chaos in some areas of Chicago. highlighting the problems. “There’s a lot going on in Chicago,” he said. “I feel like I owe it to my city to create the awareness, to start thinking of solutions… That’s the simple reason why I titled the album ‘Nobody’s Smiling.’” Common said he believes one solution is jobs. He said people who are working a job where they can take care of themselves and their families are people who are less likely to commit crimes. He said writing “Nobody’s Smiling” came easy for him, because it came straight from the heart. “I don’t have all of the solutions, but regardless of where I live in the world, I will always be Chicago and it is always on my mind,” he said. “My family and friends are all here and I love this city.” Noah, the Bulls All-Star center, got some help not just from Common, but his mother as well. The son of former French tennis star
Yannick Noah and Cécilia Rodhe, who was Miss Sweden in 1978, Noah, has lived all around the world. He said he felt he owed it to Chicago to do something to try to stem the epidemic of violence. In public service announcement videos that are airing in 60-second spots, Noah, along with Rose and Common are asking people to put the guns down and solve their differences in other ways. In the video Noah asks Chicagoans what they stand for. “The summer months bring a lot of violence, and we felt it was urgent to get this PSA out now in order to bring some hope, change and support to the community,” Noah said. Everyday residents appear in the video stating what they stand for. In the end, all of the participants say they stand for peace, unity and resolving conflict without violence.
