Noted minister of new thought remembered Services were announced this week for renowned minister Rev. Johnnie Colemon, Founder of Christ Universal Temple, amid words of condolences from elected officials and others whom she had touched with her ministry. She died on December 23 at Mercy Hospital. “I am saddened today to learn of the passing of Rev. Dr. Johnnie Colemon, said Chicago City Clerk Dorothy Brown. She added that “Rev. Dr. Johnnie Colemon was renowned as an insightful and dedicated religious leader who earned the title of ‘First Lady Of New Thought’.” The story of Rev. Johnnie Colemon reads like an epic novel and the following was released to the Crusader from Hermene Hartman, well-known publisher of N’Digo Magapaper and publicist: She was often referred to as the first lady of America’s religious community. Her ministry begins with a study group of eight started at the YMCA on 51st Street. She founded Christ Unity Center in 1956 with 35 people. She built Christ Unity Temple

Shaw drops out of Mayor’s race, backs Dr. Willie Wilson By Chinta Strausberg Flanked by dozens of supporters who chanted, “We want Willie,” former Cook County Board of Review Commissioner Robert Shaw held a press conference on Monday at the South Loop Hotel where he withdrew from the mayoral race and backed Dr. Willie Wilson for mayor of Chicago. Wilson’s son, Terrell, who will coordinate the youth in his father’s campaign, also joined supporters. “For 2015, I believe my dad has the experience, the relationships, and I am here to support him 100 percent,” he said. In bowing out of the crowded mayoral race and embracing Wilson, Shaw said the reason “is because I know Willie Wilson...for many, many years…a church man who believes in God.” When looking over the nine mayoral candidates left in the field, Shaw asked himself, “Why divide this city? We don’t need a division in this city. We need one man, one voice, and I saw Willie Wilson as the person that can carry that voice…all over town and get the message out. “I intend to work every hour of the day that I can to bring about the election of a man that I think will lead this city and bring about fairness, whether it is contracts, jobs…. Whatever it is, he will be fair to all the citizens of Chicago, and that is what is needed.” Shaw is hoping that Wilson will get rid of the controversial red light cameras. “That needs to be done.” When Wilson stated, “I think it’s strange that

there are no red lights in the Loop,” Shaw agreed. “All of us need to come together, and I am going to urge all of my friends…to come together and get behind Willie Wilson as the next mayor of this city,” he told a cheering crowd.’ Accusing Mayor Rahm Emanuel of not respecting the Black community, Shaw stated a transformation is needed and one that will ensure “South Michigan Avenue will look like North Michigan Avenue. That is what we have to change. “I know they think we’re out here playing, but we’re not playing. By the 15th of January, we’ll have it together and we’re going to move ahead and move this city forward and we’re going to do it under the leadership of Willie Wilson.” In accepting Shaw’s endorsement, Wilson said he could use Shaw’s experience. “I am not a politician…. I’m a businessperson….” He values Shaw’s opinion, along with that of the citizens of Chicago. Asked how dropping out and embracing Wilson could force a run-off come February 24, 2015, Shaw quipped, “My endorsement of Dr. Wilson will not only force a run-off; it will force a win. We got a lot of friends out there in Chicago.” Making it clear, Shaw said, “We need one candidate. We don’t need a divisive situation here. We got Willie Wilson. He’s the candidate, and my ego doesn’t dictate to me that I got to be the candidate,” he said receiving a

player and desired a show business career as a saxophonist. She was a schoolteacher at Chicago Public Schools and later an analyst for the Quarter Masters. She was diagnosed with an undisclosed incurable disease in 1952. With the encouragement from her mother, Mrs. Lula Parker, she enrolled in the Unity School of Christianity, in Lee Summit, Missouri to study in 1951. She was the first Black woman to attend the school of theology and suffered from segregated treatment, which she broke through to become the first African American to attend class on campus. She became an ordained minister of Unity in 1956 and started her ministry. Colemon developed America’s progressive New Thought religious movement that is a science of mind philosophy of metaphysics teaching practical Christian teachings on how to live a better life based on the principals of Jesus Christ. The Johnnie Colemon Institute has graduated thousands teaching the ministry of “new thought.” Colemon was a builder and teacher, having built six structures, three 2

churches two institutions of learning and a restaurant and banquet facility. Her sermons were popularized on television with her program, “Better Living with Johnnie Colemon” airing in the late 70’s to the early 80’s. She also published a magazine with the same name. In a benefit concert she premiered Duke Ellington’s Sacred Concert at McCormick Place. Her Panorama of Truth Conferences was international religious summits featuring New Thought speakers from around the world. Harold Washington’s Funeral in December of 1987 was held at Christ Universal Temple, making him the first to have a funeral in the church. Colemon rose to the occasion when the City of Chicago was in turmoil to host the funeral providing spiritual and calming leadership to the city. She hosted Chicago clergy, politicians and national leadership to pay homage to Chicago’s mayor. Her holiday services were popularized with a Christmas Special Concert and “The Burning Bowl” service that was held at the beginning of the year to rid one of negative behaviors to claim new behaviors, dreams and wishes for the New Year. for these holiday services was often over 6,000. Her overall message was “Teaching People How to Live Better Lives.” Her popular sermons included “God is Money in Action,” “It Works if you Work it” and “Change Your Mind, Change Your Life.” These sermons became popular booklets. Her teachings were dynamic and

transformational with popular sermons series such as: The Millionaire Series, The Treasure Mapping, The Healing Series and The Prosperity Series. Colemon retired from the pulpit in 2006. She is the recipient of many awards to include The Minister of the Century from the International New Thought Alliance, Honorary Doctor

She lectured throughout the continent and often in the West Indies. Many popular personalities enjoyed her services and teachings to include, Della Reese, Eartha Kitt, Les Brown, Ben Vereen and Iyanla Vanzant. She was a generous contributor to local causes and charities often anonymously. She loved children and called her Sunday school attendees, “Johnnie Colemon Babies.” Her husband, Leon C. Blair, her assistant The Reverend Helen Carey, her Godchildren, Vera Donnelly, Domonique Hatchett and Jasmin Travis and thousands of congregants, survive her. The Reverend Derrick Wells is the current pastor of Christ Universal Temple. Visitation is Sunday, January 4 at A.R. Leak Funeral Home, 78th & Cottage Grove. Bears fans rejoice with news of firings say more need to come By J. Coyden Palmer Just two years after the controversial decision was made to fire Lovie Smith, the only African American head coach in the Bear’s history after a 10-6 record, the man who made the firing and his replacement head coach were fired. The Bears announced on Dec. 29 that General Manager Phil Emery and head coach Marc Trestman had their contracts terminated. The Bears finished the season 5-11 and went through a season full of in-house and off the field turmoil. But the embarrassment the team brought to the city and fans resonated in the soul of the franchise’s 91-year-old owner Virginia McCaskey. “She’s pissed off,” said her son, Board President George McCaskey during the press conference in Lake Forest to announce the firings. His mother’s feeling is the exact same sentiment Bears fans had all season. Many took to the steps of boycotting the team by refusing to go to home games late in the season, not watching games on TV or some packing all of the team’s paraphernalia away until things change. “You won’t see me buying or wearing anything that has Chicago Bears on it until they fix this mess,” said a still upset David Jones from Dolton. “I work about an hour away in Indiana and I had to hear it from Colts fans all season. How the team played this year was a disgrace and everyone needed to be fired.” Jones’ sentiments summed up fans feelings across the board. Most wanted a complete washout announced by Bears management the Monday after the season finale loss to the lowly

Minnesota Vikings. The Bears finished in last place in their division and will have the number seven pick in the NFL draft in April. “I can’t understand how the defensive coordinator still kept his job as they were awful on defense the last two years,” said Aaron Anderson from Gresham. “We couldn’t stop anyone from passing or throwing.” Defensive Coordinator Mel Tucker’s contract is still intact for now, but that is expected to change when the new general manager and coach are announced. For now only Emery, Trestman and offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer are fired. But the house cleaning did not go far enough for some fans, who also wanted Bears President Ted Phillips gone or moved

mean Lovie did the best he could with what he was given.” Those under the age of 30, who were not alive when the Bears won their last Super Bowl in 1985, said they are beginning to wonder if they will ever see this franchise get a ring. “Well I’ve heard a lot about the Super Bowl shuffle from my parents, but even they hadn’t met when that happened,” said Taylor Robinson, 23 from suburban Robbins. “All I’ve ever known about the Bears is losing and I guess chaos with this year. But I’ll still be a Bears fan since they are the only football team in town.” While the changes in the coaching staff and general manager’s office were a good start, fans have now turned their attention to players. Number one on their list of people who need to go is Cutler. Phillips and McCaskey said the decision on player personnel will be left up to the new GM and head coach. McCaskey said he likes Cutler but will not stand in the way of a change, which is fine with fans. “Cutler is a bum, who is not a leader and who has an I don’t give a damn attitude,” said Larry Edwards, who coaches youth football. “That guy is not only uninspiring he seems to drag the rest of the team down with his attitude. The Bears are not going anywhere with this guy as the face of the franchise.” McCaskey and Phillips said they heard the disappointment from fans on talk radio and noticed all of the no-shows at games. “We have a very passionate fan base and they have every right to be upset with us,” McCaskey said. His mother was not the only person pissed off.

New Laws on Tap for 2015 By J. Coyden Palmer This year’s crop of new laws around the state address underage drinking, driving faster, the use of medical marijuana, employment opportunities for ex-convicts and rights for pregnant employees. Citizens are responsible for knowing the new laws that will begin on New Year’s Day. Each year the state legislature passes bills that begin on the first day of the New Year. Underage Drinking: Seeking to make parents more responsible, the state enhanced a law currently on the books that now allows parents who serve alcohol to minors who are then convicted of an alcohol related crime to be charged with a felony. The previous law only addressed parents who served alcohol to underage drinkers in a home. The new law expands that to other places: vehicles, trailers, campers or boats under parents’ ownership www.chicagocrusader.com

or control. And if a death occurs as a result, parents or guardians can be charged with a felony. There is also a $2,000 fine that can be levied against parents. Speed Limit Increase in Chicago Area: Chicago area drivers already drive fast, now they can legally go faster on Illinois Tollways. In 2013, Illinois interstates increased the speed limit to 70 M.P.H. in some areas, mostly rural and downstate. Local drivers though balked when Chicago area legislators wanted to keep speed limits low. Senate Bill 2015 expands the legislation however and gives the Illinois Tollway Authority the right to establish higher speed limits in urban areas if they so choose. Medical Marijuana for Children: With the advances in medical technology, the changing of the public’s attitude towards marijuana usage and the state now issuing

licenses to grow medical pot, a new law will now allow children with epilepsy to be treated with marijuana. Many doctors have advocated for the change in the law, in addition to parents. Children who have been diagnosed with epilepsy and are at risk for severe

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

seizures will need two doctors written verification to be admitted into the pilot program. Pregnant Employees Rights: Women who want to keep working during their pregnancy can now do so in a better environment. Under HB8, employers

must provide “reasonable accommodations” for working pregnant women unless it would impose an “undue hardship” on the business. That includes limits on manual labor, more frequent bathroom breaks and space to breastfeed. The law also says a pregnant woman cannot be forced to take a leave of absence when another accommodation is available and that an employer cannot refuse to hire a qualified applicant because of a required accommodation. Ban the Box: In an attempt to get more exconvicts a chance at gainful employment once their sentences are complete, Illinois becomes the fifth state in the country that bans private employers from checking a person’s criminal history until the final round of job interviews. Advocates complained that many people were immediately dismissed from consideration when perspective employers found out about their criminal history.

EDITORIAL

EDITORIAL A NEW YEAR BRINGS NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR POSITIVE CHANGE The Earth has just completed one more trip around the Sun, marking the year 2015. We can look back and see the trials and tribulations that have been part of the experience of the world’s people. Many of the challenges have focused on the differences between people and not the similarities. Let’s look at some of these similarities: all human beings want safety and security for their families and themselves; all people want food, shelter, clothing; everyone wants water; and most want companionship. We are a herd species and, as such, need to have others around us. The problem comes in where we only want people of our own kind near us, which often translates into separation according to skin color. However, if we look at this skin color issue from an unorthodox standpoint, we can come up with an interesting perspective. Most people talk about Black, white, Asian, Hispanic, and Indian (Aryan) people. Let’s erase the strict racial boundaries that we insist exist to see the reality that people exhibit the following color characteristics: human beings exhibit a range of colors basically on a continuum that features black-brown, dark-brown, brown, caramel, light brown, tan, beige, light beige, light yellow-brown, pink and pale pink. In other words, many people across races exhibit a wide range of color characteristics. There are so-called Black people who are as light as any white person; and white people are not all the same complexion; some are described as olive, “swarthy,” and tan; some Indians (from India) are as dark as the darkest African; Asians can range from tan to yellow-brown, etc. Many people straddle middle ground in this continuum. Take for example, President Barack Obama, who is considered to be the first African American president. His father was a dark-brown African while his mother was a pink (white) American woman. As a result, Obama is as light as many of the racists that vilify him. When race is looked at merely by judging the color of one’s skin, the concept comes up short. In fact, in recent years, there are those who believe that race is an artificial construct. The fact is that we are all part of the human species. In general, procreation across species is considered to be impossible. Since that is the case, there would not be any mixed-race children such as President Obama if his parents represented different species; his mother would not be able to produce a child with an African male. But she did, and hence, they both were part of the human species. If race is an artificial construct, then what are the elements that separate members of the human family? Culture is certainly one of these. People may resemble each other physically, but it is the cultural differences that are important and that keep us apart. The new year brings new opportunities to question the ancient prejudices that most people tend to harbor when it comes to assessing each other. Unfortunately, the issue of race, however, doesn’t seem to be waning. On the contrary, people are becoming more race conscious than ever. The recent events in the United States are exacerbating this situation. Racial polarization is on the upswing. Brown people and Pink people are increasingly criticizing one another. Brown people have experienced years of oppression at the hands of Pink people. Present day Pink people, on the other hand, often do not realize the extent to which Brown people have been mistreated and, therefore, have little sympathy for their plight. The conclusion that is evident in the issue of race relations is that Evolution will have to solve the problem; when people evolve to a greater level of understanding of the spiritual ties to which all human beings are bound, things will change. Fortunately, there is light at the end of the tunnel. This is evidenced by the numbers of people of all hues that have joined in the Black Life Matters movement. The year 2015 brings new opportunities for us to get it right; if not, dark days will surely dog us! It is time that we grow up! With this said, have a prosperous, thoughtful and Happy New Year! 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Shaw “campaign” defied logic Dear Editor: There are some things in life and in Chicago politics that simply defy logic. The most recent example that comes to mind is Robert Shaw claiming he was running for mayor of Chicago. While he could claim he had been elected to public office more than any of the other Black candidates in the race, that is where his credentials ended. From the onset he was never viewed as a serious contender. One reason could have been he had been out of the public eye, as well as elected office for so long. The second most notable thing was he was not known for any governmental accomplishments, other than being elected simultaneously with his late brother. From the onset some of Shaw’s detractors said he got in the race so he could be paid to get out of it. Who knows if that is true because his campaign generated no media coverage and he never seemed to mount that multi-ethnic coalition he promised would take him to the mayor’s office. It is kind of sad when people don’t recognize when the best part of their careers are behind them. In this failed attempt at the mayor’s job, Shaw showed he didn’t understand the cheers weren’t for him. Decades earlier he might have had a chance,

but now he is very much like the great Willie Mays chasing a fly ball in center field and falling down. It was a sight no one wanted to see and Willie didn’t want to admit his center field days were over. He could contribute to the game someplace else, just not center field. The same is true of Bob Shaw. He probably can be an adviser to a mayor for some grassroots initiative, but he is not the one to be in the big spotlight. No doubt his friends and supporters have thanked him many times over the years for his public service. Now we can all thank him one more time for having the good sense to get out of the race he never should have been in to begin with. Gary Williams

COMMENTARY

Cuba will make us Better Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist People must wonder why the United States has been so hard on Cuba for the past 55 years. The answer is simple. Led by the incomparable Fidel Castro, this island nation took on the strongest nation on earth and, by all accounts, has succeeded. Having the feared Soviet Union as a benefactor and “sugar daddy” gave us pause every time we became angry about something. But even after the Soviet Union fell, Cuba kept up its programs and here we are today about to end all hostility. Before the communist revolution, Cuba was a gangster’s paradise. All of the mob figures had investments on the island. Castro overthrew the corrupt Battista government and kicked out all of the criminal families and the bourgeois class that oppressed the common folks. Having a communist dictatorship 90 miles off our southern shore was not an easy thing for American politics. Many American politicians vowed to end the Castro run government but they all failed. Presidents Eisenhower,

Harry C. Alford Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Bush 2 have all failed in their efforts to end the Cuban government. Now, after all of this President Barack Obama is deciding to throw away that doctrine and make friends with Cuba. This is going to be a bold paradigm shift. We have spent billions of dollars trying to defeat the leadership of this small nation and have now come to the conclusion that we should try another method – friendship. This is the boldest move President Obama has made

in terms of foreign affairs. If he succeeds it will be part of his legacy – doing something the others before him could not do. The quality of life in Cuba rivals many 3rd world nations. In fact, in terms of health care, literacy, cost of living, etc. Cuba has many advantages. Recently, when the Ebola epidemic broke out in Western Africa it was Cuba that surprised other nations with their expertise in addressing such a medical threat. If we would swallow our pride and emulate some of the medical models developed by Cuba we would be better off. They no longer have sickle cell anemia but we still do. They have HIV Aids under control but we don’t. They offer free medical training for students throughout impoverished lands at a rate far greater than us. The lifespan of a Cuban Black far exceeds that of an African American. Cuba has offered free medical training to some of our poverty stricken areas such as the Mississippi Delta but we won’t take advantage of what they offer. We should also emulate their education system which has greater literacy rates than ours. The above would be a great start

in our new relationship with Cuba. Imagine the new professional athletes that will be coming to play here in the United States. The infusion of Cuban athletes will be a game changer in sports such as boxing, soccer, basketball, track and field, etc. Cuba has some of the best civil engineers and construction managers in the world. I have witnessed some of their projects being built on every continent of the world. Their work is excellent, affordable and reliable. It would be great if many of our Black businesses would joint venture with them and take on projects around the world as they do. There is nothing we could not build. As our new relationship builds, such activity can become a reality. This would build Black business capacity in this nation and create jobs by the millions. Yes, Cuba could greatly help us to get around the racial adversity that we face in this current economy. What if we stopped relying on the racist construction unions in this nation and started training programs in the construction trades with Cuban engineers? This way we could start to popu-

late the journeyman fields with Black youth as opposed to being subjected to racist and sexist apprenticeship programs that perpetuate our construction industry via construction unions. We have been fighting these programs for over 40 years. We can just use our own with the help of Cuban expertise. Using Cuban education and Cuban construction apprenticeship programs – free of discrimination and poor results. Yes, I am pleading to Cuba for their help in these areas. We need it badly and Cubans have shown that it is not a biological or racial matter. It is about commitment and equal opportunity. My mentor, Dr. Arthur A. 2014: Unfair and Unbalanced Media By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist Fox News, which mislabels itself as “fair and balanced,” was anything but in 2014, according to MediaMatters.org, the independent media watchdog group. The way that the right-wing network covered the deaths of police officers in 2014 is a case in point. “The politicization surrounding the killing of two New York Police Department officers over the weekend was amazingly swift. Fox News led the right-wing media charge, immediately claiming Democratic elected officials were somehow responsible for the gun rampage…,” the MediaMatters analysis observed. “On Fox, hosts and guests were sure who was to blame for the tragedy; not the gunman necessarily, but political and community leaders like President Obama, Attorney General Eric Holder, Mayor Bill de Blasio and MSNBC’s Al Sharpton. Why? Because the men, to varying degrees, have spoken out about the troubled relationship between law enforcement and the Black community, and raised concerns about two recent high-profile cases, Michael Brown and Eric Garner, in which unarmed Black men were killed, and police officers responsible were not indicted.” www.chicagocrusader.com

doubtedly created racial tensions that worsens, not betters the situation for law enforcement.’” “Appearing on Fox News, former New York City Mayor Rudolf Giuliani insisted the message from recent Obama ‘propaganda’ was that ‘everybody should hate the cops.’ (No such Obama ‘propaganda’ actually exists.)” MediaMatters noted, “Yet in stark contrast, as Media Matters has documented, Fox News has routinely paid very little attention to breaking news stories that feature right-wing, or anti-government gunmen who target law

enforcement officials as a way to deliver their warped political messages. “And critically, when they have touched on those deadly attacks, Fox talkers have stressed that it’s not fair to blame politics. Note that in 2013, after racist skinhead Michael Page started killing worshipers at an Oak Creek, WI. Sikh temple, and then murdered a police officer, Fox’s Andrea Tantaros stressed that the killing spree was an isolated event that didn’t have any larger implications. ‘How do you stop a lunatic?’ she asked. ‘This is not a political issue.’ “At Fox, that has been the pat-

tern: These kind of deadly rightwing attacks are treated as isolated incidents that are mostly void of politics. Instead, the perpetrators are portrayed as lone. George E. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR George E. Curry The watchdog group continued, “…former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik told Fox News, ‘I personally feel that Mayor de Blasio, Sharpton and others like them, they actually have blood on their hands.’ “‘Let’s talk about the president as well,’” responded Fox’s Jeanine Pirro, suggesting Obama and Mayor de Blasio were to blame. “‘The two of them have un-

(Continued from page 4) the NFL is beyond my level of comprehension. The silver lining in the Trestman firing though is it gives the Bears an opportunity to put a Black man in the head coaching slot. It is not likely they can lure Lovie Smith back, but there are several other Black coaches, former players and Black assistant coaches who can fit the bill and (obviously) do better than Trestman. The team definitely should reach out to the Minnesota Vikings to get permission to talk with Mike Singletary, who is currently a line-

backer coach there. He also brings the experience of being the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. Mike was a fan favorite during his playing days here and there was a lot of interest and hope by fans that he would be brought in to replace Lovie Smith. The Bears can rectify that mistake by signing him as head coach now. Another great candidate in my opinion is Herman Edwards. It would be wonderful to get him out of the announcing/analyst booth and onto the sidelines of Soldier Field. His no-nonsense, defensive oriented style is just

what the Bears need now. Like Mike Singletary, Edwards left coaching with a less than .500 win record, but he fielded some impressive teams with plenty of big time wins. Unfortunately, the Bears can’t afford to look to the college ranks now where there are some ideal Black coaches. They, however, need to be brought into a situation where a winning coach is retiring. Coming into a team that needs to be rebuilt like the Bears would be disastrous. Phil Mellin

COMMENTARY

We Must Not Surrender Our Culture (Dr. Conrad Worrill, Chairman Emeritus of the National Black United Front (NBUF) located at 1809 East 71st Street, Suite 211, Chicago, Illinois, 60649, 773-4930900, Fax# 773-493-9819, E-mail: nbufchic@sbcglobal.net, Web site: nbufront.org)

Dr. Conrad Worrill Our ancestor, Dr. Asa G. Hilliard’s book, The Maroon Within Us, once again reminds us of a major problem that we, as African people in America, are besieged by. Dr. Hilliard described this problem as cultural surrender. In explaining the problem, Dr. Hilliard wrote,

“African Americans remain one of the very few groups in the United States who do not honor their own cultural traditions, sometimes even when they are honored by others.” Continuing on this point, Dr. Hilliard states that, “If there is a major illness among African American people it is that we unceasingly honor and utilize our culture less. All great nations and people do the opposite.” As Dr. Hilliard further explains, “Cultural surrender is more than a matter of rejecting one’s father and mother culture. It means that one accepts a new definition as a person. The culturally dependent person is a mere spectator, a receptacle for the creativities of others. To demand freedom from slavery only to use that freedom to commit one’s self to a voluntary cultural servitude is to lose the chance to be human.” The erosion of many of our African cultural traditions and foundations are most evidenced in our family and community life. Far too many African people in America are getting away from the essence of family life. The cultural tradition of African family life is that of the extended family that centers itself on the rearing of children and caring for the elders.

Family life is the basis for which a people maintain their cultural traditions, traditions that are important to the survival of a people. The way we raise our children in the context of extended family life for African people was always connected to the overall development of the larger community. Dr. Hilliard writes, “There have always been Africans or Black people in America who have been both physically and mentally free. We have also had far too many of those who have yielded their bodies— and worse, their souls— to people and systems whose purpose was to exploit to take all and give nothing.” It is in this context that Dr. Hilliard provides several reasons why this devastating trend of cultural surrender is taking place. He says, “…we have tended to accept certain false dichotomies,” such as the following: “1. We have tended to equate sophisticated technology with culture, believing that such technology is exclusively European and that to affirm African culture is to reject technology. 2. We have tended to equate modern with technology, and to value modern as if it were cultural

progress. At the same time, we have seen the affirmation of African/African American culture as a matter of retrogression. Further, we have seen African/African American culture as static rather than dynamic and adaptive. 3. We have tended to equate European culture with wealth and African/African American culture with poverty. 4. We have tended to associate education with the acquisition of all the cultural forms of Europeans, and find it hard to conceive of educated persons who live the African/African American culture. 5. We have tended to equate self-affirmation with the hatred of others. 6. We have tended to equate religion with particular forms of European interpretations of Christianity and have not seen our people as religious or spiritual. 7. Generally we have failed to study ourselves and to know our culture.” The challenges that African people face in America and throughout the world, as we enter the twenty-firstcentury is to create programs, strategies, and institutions that will reclaim and preserve our rich culture. One such program that has emerged as one approach to preserving our culture and traditions aimed at

our youth is the growing Rites of Passage Movement. This Movement seeks to place African and African people at the center of independently working with our young people. Children in Rites of Passage Programs are generally taught aspects of our history that included our literary accomplishments, our accomplishments in music, science and technology, and the spiritual concepts of African people that direct our moral and ethical behavior and treatment of others. As we look out and observe the African World Community, we can see a common set of problems that all African people face, as a result of hundred of years of exploitation by Europeans and others against African people. This exploitation has developed into a worldwide system of white supremacy and white domination aimed at wiping out African culture. We must resist and refuse any efforts to wipe out our culture. Finally, Dr. Hilliard writes, “Cultural surrender or cultural destruction leads inevitably to the loss of any possibility for a group to mobilize on its behalf. There can be no African/African American family in the absence of a cultural base.”

Innocent Blacks and White Cops – All Lives are Valuable By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist Rafael Ramos had been a school security guard before he joined the New York City Police Department two years ago. Ramos, 40, was married and had two children. The youngest child, Jaden, 13, fondly remembered his dad on Facebook and Twitter, describing his dad as “the best father I could ask for.” Already, many in the Ramos family say they have forgiven Ismaaiyl Brinsley, the man who executed Rafael Ramos and his colleague, Wenjian Liu, on December 20. Liu, 32, attended the College of Staten Island and Kingsborough Community College. He was a dedicated police officer who, according to news reports, chose his career out of a sense of duty and obligation. He had been married for just two months. Eric Garner, 43, was also married and had six children; the youngest, Legacy, was born just three months before his father died. Garner’s death was ruled a homicide, probably because he was placed in a chokehold, a forbidden police maneuver. At 400 pounds, he suffered from diabetes 6

and asthma, but – despite sinister efforts to blame Garner’s health for his death – those diseases did not kill him. A cursory view of the last moments of his life show excessive police force and medical indifference to a man whose dying utterance, “I can’t breathe,” has become the mantra for a movement. Tamir Rice never lived long enough to reach the legal age for marriage. He was just 12 years old when Timothy Loehmann shot him to death. Loehmann was described as “unfit” for police duty in Independence, Ohio, but he somehow made it onto the larger, Cleveland police force. It took him all of two seconds to decide the precious little boy had a dangerous weapon, although the 911 caller who alerted the police said the gun was probably not real. Michael Brown, described as a “gentle giant” by his friends, also had his life cut short. He was killed by a remorseless Darren Wilson, who pumped 12 rounds into the young, Black man who was looking forward to attending community college. The words, “hands up, don’t shoot” have been printed on signs and Tshirts all over the world, as a symbol of police brutality and active resis-

Dr. Julianne Malveaux tance. A grand jury failed to indict Darren Wilson, whose testimony seems to have been coached by Robert McCulloch, a prosecutor whose actions were, at best, questionable. His killing, linked with those of Tamir Rice and Eric Garner, has sparked an international movement against police brutality and excessive police force. What links the deaths of Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Eric Garner, Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu?

Some would say that one set of deaths was revenge for the other. Actually, all of the deaths represent a tragic loss of life. They represent losses for families and friends, tragedies for communities. The connection between Brown, Rice, Garner, Ramos and Liu is that all of these lives should be mourned. Patrick Lynch, the president of the New York Police Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, has used incendiary rhetoric to link the killings of Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu to the international protests against police brutality. Lynch blames the killings of Ramos and Liu on New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, whose compassionate words after a grand jury failed to indict Eric Garner’s killer set just the right tone. Instead of asking who is to blame for the tragic deaths, Lynch should focus on the mental illness that clearly compelled Ismaaiyl Brinsley to kill two police officers. It is troubling that the media has focused on “revenge” shootings without fully exploring the possibility that Brinsley simply was “not all there.” He shot his former girlfriend before heading to New York to kill police officers, and then he killed himself. These are not the

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

actions of a rational human being. Acting in absolutely righteous rage, tens of thousands of protestors have taken to the streets, sometimes in actions that have been carefully orchestrated, and other times in spontaneous outrage. Al Sharpton gathered thousands to Washington, D.C., flanked by the mothers of the Black men who were slain. Refreshingly, the protesters were multi-racial and multi-generational. “Hands up, don’t shoot,” and “I can’t breathe” were their watchwords. There is no thick line, and probably not even a dotted line between the police killings and killings of Black men except for the fact that we live in a violent culture. When Adam Lanza killed 26 people in Newtown, Conn. in 2011, his deranged Internet postings were seen as part of his mental illness. Too many are focusing on Ismaaiyl Brinsley’s supposed “revenge” and too few are focusing on his mental illness. And, most importantly, too few are focusing on the equivalence of life, the fact that every death is a tragedy. By Elaine Hegwood Bowen, MSJ By Raymond Ward SAVE THE DATE!: Keith Sweat helped define the sound of R&B/Soul in the Eighties and Nineties with a string of irresistible dance tracks like the #1 song “Make You Sweat.” But, the award-winning tenor also recorded his share of seductive slow jams, the best of which take center stage on Sweat’s latest compilation. Harlem Romance:The Love Collection will be available on February 10, 2015 at retail outlets everywhere. The 15-tracks include selections from Sweat’s first five solo albums, all of which topped the R&B charts: 1987’s Make It Last Forever (triple platinum), 1990’s I’ll Give All My Love to You (double platinum), 1991’s Keep It Comin’ (platinum), 1994’s Get Up On It (platinum) and his self-titled 1996 album (quadruple platinum). The final song on the collection - My Body - is taken from Levert.Sweat.Gill., the double-platinum album he recorded with Gerald Levert and Johnny Gill in 1997. Fittingly, The Love Collection begins with the title track from Sweat’s debut, Make It Last Forever. Also featured from that album is Right And A Wrong Way, a song the singer co-wrote with legendary R&B producer Teddy Riley. Among the standout tracks on this new collection are several of Sweat’s #1 R&B hits: I’ll Give All My Love To You,

In the parking lot of The Hummingbird, a once-glamorous motel on New Orleans’ infamous Airline Highway, a group of friends gather. A rag-tag collection of strippers, hustlers and philosophers have come together to celebrate the life of Miss Ruby, an iconic burlesque performer who has requested a funeral before she dies. The party rages through the night as old friends resurface to pay their respects. A world premiere from the author of Detroit, “Airline Highway” is a boisterous and moving ode to the outcasts who make life a little more interesting. “The play is deeply concerned with interrogating the nature of community and belonging. Lisa has rooted the play in her hometown of New Orleans, an Ameri-

“It took me a long time to be brave enough to write about my hometown of New Orleans – it is so hard to capture the nuance of this city in writing. This play is a celebration of NOLA natives and longtime locals; the people who have built the city and made it what it is. The character of Miss Ruby is based on New Orleans’ living legend Chris Owens, who still performs her incredible burlesque routine on Bourbon Street. I am interested in telling the story of New Orleaneans who have lived through it all – and continue to do so, on the fringes and behind the scenes.” The cast includes Steppenwolf ensemble members Robert Breuler and K. You also feel for Miss Ruby, who only comes out of her room late in the play to attend the party. From the beginning to end, there seems to be one hustle after another going on; with the resident prostitute entertaining guests and lamenting the fact that Miss Ruby needs to be recognized for her longevity as New Orleans’ history dictates. SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING

A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe Happy New Year—Happy New You! On your mark—get ready— get set to go boldly where you have never gone before. Now is the perfect time to embrace fresh opportunities and begin to walk in a direction towards something new. S-t-r-et-c-h—your thinking—your goals and imagination into high gear to another echelon. There is so much more territory for you to explore as well as opportunities to seize but you must have an open mind, heart and soul to be in sync with your divine portal of blessings. Get out of the old into the newness of a healthy life in the physical and spiritual realm. Try a different approach— instead of another halfhearted New Year’s resolution that will probably fall by the wayside before spring— here are some necessary steps that

will point you to a direct path of your dreams and triumphs. In order to shift your beliefs into high gear and walk in the evidence of your manifestation, know that it begins and ends with you. Whatever you desire big or small starts with your faith, so find the courage to stop doing the same things, the same way hoping for different results. Become the change you desire or prepare to repeat this cycle of false hopes 12 months from now. Set realistic goals that you really need and want to accomplish. Determine a time you want to see the indication of these goals and be about the business of making it happen. If necessary, begin with baby steps—the following are simple changes that can yield huge lifelong benefits. Drinking a glass of water before bed can eliminate morning stiffness caused by arthritis. What do

Effie Rolfe

the lonely do—make new acquaintances by showing yourself friendly? Where are all the good guys—perhaps joining a reputable online dating sight might be an option? Believe it or not, probably more people than you know have explored this option and are still happily married today. Try a new hairstyle or color. Learn a new language—one new word a day or each week—take an online class or at a local bible college. Walk in place while watching your favorite show. Save $5 dollar per paycheck—join an organization that supports your cause or write a letter or email with your concerns to an elected official. It’s about making a change in your thinking and ultimately adding more value to your life. You want it—try it…nothing will ever change until you move. The

longer you wait, the longer it takes to ascertain the desired life you really want to have. Take the challenge to go beyond mere words and cliché resolutions to see the impossible become your reality this year. Otherwise, prepare to repeat the cycle of another year of broken dreams and fantasies. To live a vibrant balanced life requires action with your daily workload. When you do this, you will discover a whole new world. More importantly, when it’s all said and done—you alone will have to answer for the life you chose to live. What’s your resolution to do things differently this year…? Effie Rolfe is an Author of “Supersize Your Thinking,” Media Personality and Motivational Speaker. The Crusader Gospel Corner A former homeless man turned minister and now author, debuts a passionate work to help those still lost. The book is entitled “The Jesus Command,” a journey through the scriptures on a path of life changing inspiration. The local Chicago Minister with a flair for inspiration and encouragement has authored a guide to discipleship with positive life changing implications. well continued had it not been for an encounter with a true disciple and follower of Christ. What resulted was a string of events that fueled the struggle back to a positive worldview and a meaningful way of living. Taking the words of Jesus Himself… “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another,” (Jn. 13:35) – Milam uses the life of Christ and the inspiration of those closest to Him, to unravel the meaning of discipleship. Beginning at the threshold of love, a serious look at what it is to love – as Jesus loved, is explored. The love expressed by Jesus… the love of God, is much more than man is capable of mustering without some help. Milam, in his role as minister, teaches Bible Study, and serves on the pastoral staff of South Side Gospel Church, in Chicago’s Woodlawn Community. The outreach he founded, The Hands Of God Ministries, helps those in need. Having lived life from both sides of the fence, he is no stranger to the need as well as the benefits of loving your neighbor.

istries. His new book takes a fresh look at the command of Jesus, “to love one another as I have loved you,” as the underlying basis for discipleship. Published by WestBow Press, “The Jesus Command” uses biblical principles, scripture, and candid discussion to provide the tools necessary to transform ordinary lives into extraordinary living. Milam, spent nearly 20 years living as a depressed homeless man on the street, lost without hope. That existence might have very 12

(Cont’d from page 7) loves De Tiny Emperor and if he becomes the alderman he will vote so hard for Rahm Emanuel’s policies it will make Ald. Sawyer’s eyeballs sweat. Brown hosts a radio show on Finney’s internet station and is being groomed by some people to be the next generation Finney. As you know Leon was a bootlicker for DUH Mayor Daley and some people are hoping the little Brown man will lick the boot for Emanuel and be the point person to hold his hands out for a few community crumbs from time to time. Unfortunately for him, he has supposedly angered

(Cont’d from page 10) members have to be as gritty and sharp to stay fed and to keep breathing. Freeman plays Sissy Na Na, the reigning transvestite. He plays his role with such conviction and fervor, as he tends to his job of making sure Miss Ruby is comfortable and is taking her prescribed medicine daily. The residents anxiously await the arrival of Bait Boy (Stephen Louis Grush) who has moved away, but not after breaking his ex-girl-

some Negro activists by calling them “too old” to lead. With his girl Amara “I Know You Didn’t Believe Me Did You” Enyia out of the mayor’s race, we hear he is trying to figure out which fake mayoral candidate to latch on to.

Bill “Doc” Walls is raising little money for his fake mayoral campaign, said one snitch. While a few people have been duped into giving up their Flaming Hot

money, most are holding their nose. But he ain’t the only one who ain’t getting no people support. Bob “Alderman Without A Ward” Fioretti has millions in his personal bank but few people are giving it up for his mayoral campaign. The County Commissioner No One Knows is pulling in union bucks to his future war chests, but few donations from everyday folk. The McDonald’s King has a tiny war chest, but if he’s got millions, is he prepared to dump a few in his fake campaign? The others don’t even count. Have folk thrown up their hands already as people move to-

ward February? Is people bracing themselves for another four years of Rahm Emanuel? Seems like the fix is in if you ask Ima’s roomates at the Goodbye-AndGood Bye Convalescent Home. “The woman who could have beat de brakes off him wouldn’t run,” observed Effie Lee Brinsley, who peed on himself last Tuesday. “Then that union gal got sick in the head and she couldn’t run. Look at who we got to choose from. This (curse word) is on purpose. You think that (curse word) was going to give up all this power just lak dat? Everybody hate this man— and we couldn’t find not

friend’s heart. He is now married and brings his teenage daughter back to New Orleans to attend the party. Her presence is kind of disarming, in that she wants to interview everyone for a school paper. But whose life is worth telling and having recorded in this broken down, end-of-theroad motel? The entire cast works together to deliver a tribute to New Orleans, which they knew well before Hurricane Katrina hit. At the end,

they are just trying to hold on to great memories. Freeman has been a Steppenwolf Theatre Company ensemble member since 1993. At Steppenwolf he has appeared in dozens of plays, including The March, The Brother/Sister Plays, The Tempest, Art, Topdog/Underdog, We All Went Down to Amsterdam, among others. He also has a number of directing credits, both at Steppenwolf and off Broadway. I remember seeing him for the first time years ago

in Topdog/Underdog, and it is great to see his growth throughout the years and to see that he is still firmly connected to Chicago theatre. This play runs through February 8, 2015, and is then off to Broadway, and is a great way to kick off the New Year. Tickets to Airline Highway run from $20 - $86 and are available through Audience Services (1650 N Halsted St), 312-335-1650 and on the website at Steppenwolf.org.

Civil Rights Champion to keynote CTU’s (Cont’d from page 1) policy and pastoral care. Like in Chicago and elsewhere in the nation, North Carolina citizens were faced with regressive attacks on the poor, workers, Blacks, Latinos, women, students, the sick and elderly. Answering the call for moral courage, Rev. Barber, along with 16 other ministers and activists, peacefully petitioned their representatives on Jones Street in late April 2013 where the state capital is located. Then, for 62 consecutive weeks, the Forward Together Moral Movement, as led by the civil rights champion, protested an avalanche of regressive policies through more than 122 rallies and actions, leading to more than 1,000 arrests for civil disobedience in the state leg-

islature and involving tens of thousands of demonstrators with more than 80,000 people participating in a single day at the height of the campaign. Because of overwhelming response to Barber’s scheduled Chicago appearance, the CTU has added a second free event in the afternoon of Jan. 15th where Barber will keynote a celebration and rally at Trinity United Church of Christ, 400 W. 95th Street, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. In addition to music from the Morgan Park High School Boys Chorus, spoken word performances and recollections of King’s work, spotlight will be given to the Chicago’s rising youth movement against police brutality and fight for education equi-

Make Economic Justice 2015’s New Year’s Resolution By Charlene Crowell NNPA Columnist In recent months the groundswell of activism regarding Black America’s lack of criminal justice has become nearly daily headline news. Demonstrations spanning the nation and many parts of the globe have called for justice for those lives taken by questionable and fatal police behavior. Yet Black America also suffers from another kind of injustice that is economic in nature and as pervasive as it is cruel. According to a new analysis of the Federal Reserve’s Survey of Consumer Finances, White household wealth stands at 13 times that of Black households. Similarly, when White wealth was compared to that of Latino households, the wealth gap was more than 10 times. After accounting for total household financial assets such as savings, investments, and business equity, the Pew Research Center then subtracted all indebtedness including mortgages, installment loans, credit cards student loans and more. The results in dollar values determined that the median net worth of White households in 2013 was $141,900. For Blacks and Latinos, however,

www.chicagocrusader.com

median net worth was respectively only $11,000 and $13,700. Commenting on these findings, analysis authors Richard Fry and Rakesh Kochhar wrote, “[F]inancial assets such as stocks, have recovered in value more quickly than housing since the recession ended. White households are much more likely than minority households to own stocks directly or indirectly through retirement accounts. Thus, they [Whites] were in better position to benefit from the recovery in financial markets.” This reasoning may apply post-recession; but America’s racial wealth divide has existed throughout most of the nation’s history. For example, for more than 200 years enslaved Africans and their descendants worked with no wages. Emancipation freed former slaves; but few opportunities for immediate gainful employment existed. Although Reconstruction led to some short-lived economic gains, the “Black Codes” that soon followed with Jim Crow laws and practices reversed most financial gains. America’s ‘colored wages’ continued for several decades until 1960s federal civil rights legislation called for equal employment and banned racial dis-

Charlene Crowell crimination in employment, public accommodations, housing and voting. It is also noteworthy to remember that early federal homeownership

programs were structured in ways that discriminated against Black borrowers. For example, the FHA and GI Bill’s housing programs had severe biases against urban homes and neighborhoods with large numbers of minorities. These policies and practices led to the virtual exclusion of Black families in accessing affordable and sustainable mortgages. In other locales, restrictive covenants banned people of color from neighborhoods – without regard for their ability to afford homes. Some restrictive covenants existed even in communities that did not officially mandate racial segregation. The Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), enacted in 1977, requires depository institutions such as banks and credit unions to use safe and sound practices to meet the credit needs of communities where they operate – including low and moderate-income neighborhoods. In May 1995 and again in August 2005, CRA’s regulation was substantially revised and updated. Even with CRA, however, predatory lenders consistently targeted consumers of color in their own neighborhoods. Often in the absence of full-service, mainstream financial services, these fringe lenders

arrived to exploit financial needs in urban areas. In the process, valuable dollars have been drained from wallets and livelihoods. For example, 2012 research by the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL) found that: • Black and Latino families bore $1 trillion of the nation’s $2 trillion in lost wealth due to the concentration of subprime mortgages in communities of color; • Auto loan interest-rate markups cost consumers nearly $26 billion each year; and • Borrowers in lower credit tiers pay up to 68 percent higher monthly payments on private student loans than on safer federal loans. If economic injustice is allowed to continue, America’s disturbing wealth gap trends will underscore what the 1960s Kerner Commission report predicted: two Americas divided by race. As a New Year begins, a different kind of resolution is in order: Economic justice for all. Charlene Crowell is a communications manager for the Center for Responsible Lending. She can be reached at Charlene.crowell@responsiblelending.org.
