THE WILMINGTON TEN PARDONED By Cash Michaels Special to the NNPA from the Wilmington Journal [RALEIGH, NC] In what civil rights leaders across the nation are calling a “significant” moment in the civil rights movement, North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue has granted individual pardons of actual innocence to members of the Wilmington Ten. “I have decided to grant these pardons because the more facts I have learned about the Wilmington Ten, the more appalled I have become about the manner in which their convictions were obtained,” Perdue, a Democrat who steps down on Jan. 5th, said in her Dec. 31st statement. “Justice demands that this stain finally be removed. The process in which this case was tried was fundamentally flawed. Therefore, as Governor, I am issuing these pardons of innocence to right this longstanding wrong.” The Wilmington Ten - nine Black males

and one white female – were activists who, along with hundreds of Black students in the New Hanover County Public School System, protested rampant racial discrimination there in 1971. In February 1971, after the arrival of Rev. Benjamin Chavis to help lead the protests, racial violence erupted, with white supremacist driving through Wilmington’s Black community, fatally shooting people and committing arson. A white-owned grocery store in the Black community was firebombed, and firemen came under sniper fire. It wasn’t until a year later that Rev. Chavis and the others were round up and charged with conspiracy in connection with the firebombing and shootings. The Ten were falsely convicted, and sentenced to 282 years in prison, some of which they all served. It wouldn’t be until 1977, after years of failed appeals in North Carolina courts, that the three state’s witnesses all recanted their testimonies, admitting that they per(Continued on page 19)

Cell phone users making last calls By Wendell Hutson A ban on cell phones and other electronic devices will take effect January14 at 13 Cook County criminal court buildings including the George N. Leighton Criminal Courts Building, where West Side resident Angel Johnson goes regularly. The beautician from the North Lawndale community, meets each month with her probation officer and travels to the courthouse by bus, if she cannot get a ride. Either way, Johnson said she needs her cell phone once she leaves the building. And

without a car to leave the phone inside, Johnson said she is at a loss as to what she will do once the ban kicks in. “How are people suppose to call their rides when they leave the courthouse if they can’t bring their cell phones inside the

building?,” said Johnson. The George N. Leighton Criminal Courts Building, 2625 S. California Ave., is one of the county’s busiest buildings, according to Cook County Chief Judge Timothy Evans, who on Dec. 11 entered an or-

der pursuant to General Administrative 2012-8 to ban cell phones. According to Evans, gang members have taken pictures of judges and witnesses with their cell phones while inside courthouses, (Continued on page 2)

Free condoms handed out by health department By Wendell Hutson After working two jobs for eight years Gwen Thomas finally saved up enough money to take a weeklong vacation to Cancun, Mexico. But before leaving, Thomas was urged by friends to get a flu shot to ensure she would not get sick while out of the country, so she went to see her doctor. And instead of getting a flu shot she ended up getting treated for Chlamydia, a sexually transmitted disease (STD). “There goes my vacation,” said Thomas, 47. “My doctor said I could still go, but I’d rather wait. I would feel funny sitting on the beach knowing I am carrying a disease inside me.” The single mother, who works as a warehouse clerk by day and waitress by night, said she caught the disease from having unprotected sex with a man she met on a dating website. “Trust me, it won’t happen again,” she added.

Incidents like this are common when it comes to the spread of STDs, according to a 2011 report by the Chicago Department of Health. The report concluded that the rate of STDs especially among Blacks is rising and the best way to prevent infection is the use of condoms. The city has seven health clinics that treat STDs, but with staffing cuts due to budget constraints, health officials said it often cannot see every patient. They are seen on a first come, first serve basis, the day they arrive. The Syphilis Special Surveillance Report also stated that the number of primary and secondary syphilis cases among females and heterosexual males increased by 171 percent and 115 percent in 2009 and 2010. And congenital syphilis nearly doubled in 2010. Armed with those statistics city officials have partnered with community organizations to seek out the best locations to distribute free condoms including some

Anyone caught violating the ban could be prosecuted for contempt of court, according to the Cook County State’s Attorney Office. What makes matters worse, said

Johnson, is lugging around quarters to use for a pay phone, which are located in the lobbies at the affected county buildings. “When you get there [courthouse] security makes you empty your pockets. So that means taking out all these quarters and then putting them back in your pocket once you go through the metal detector,” she said. “Hopefully the pay phones are working because from what I know most do not. The least they could do is let us leave our phones with security and reclaim them when we are leaving.” The Crusader went to all 13 criminal court buildings affected by the ban and found that there were no visible signs informing the public about the ban. Overall,

“We can’t have people being afraid to come to court and testify for fear that their identity will go viral by someone snapping a picture with their phone,” said Newman as she arrived Thursday at the criminal courts building, 2625 S. California Ave., for jury duty. And instead of limiting phone access for the average person Michael Scott, 57, said Cook County officials should concentrate on more important things.

BANNING CELL PHONES is the least of problems Cook County officials should be worried about, said Michael Scott. (Photo by Wendell Hutson)

those who often travel to criminal court buildings, had mixed reactions to the ban and most were unaware about it. “There are people who are disabled and may need medical assistance. By not allowing people their cell phones inside, it creates an unsafe environment should an emergency come up,” explained Lindell Collier, 51, a shipping clerk from the Austin community on the West Side. “I caught the bus here (George Leighton Criminal Courts Building), but what if I had an emergency while riding the bus here or riding the bus home? I would have to get off the bus and find a pay phone. Most pay phones in Chicago do not work and are hard to find in the first place.”

However, Debra Newman, 28, who lives in south suburban Richton Park, said the ban is a good idea if it protects witnesses.

“They [county officials] should be worried about these Cook County State’s Attorneys railroading people and sending them to prison,” a frustrated Scott said. “They [county officials] need to focus on making sure people get a fair shake in court and not worry about what someone is doing on their cell phone.”

Trotter ends campaign for Congress By J. Coyden Palmer The man who had emerged as one of the front-runners in a race to fill the vacancy in Congress from the 2nd Congressional District in Illinois, has dropped out of the race. State Sen. Donne Trotter, who was arrested at O’Hare International Airport on Dec. 5th after allegedly having a gun with him as he tried to go through a security checkpoint, announced over the weekend he is ending his campaign. Trotter, 62, said he would not endorse any of the remaining candidates. Trotter said his pending legal troubles would have become a distraction in the campaign. “The stakes are too high,” said Trotter, adding he will remain committed to solving the issues plaguing the district. “Nothing must be allowed to eclipse this debate.” Calls for Trotter to quit the race came immediately after his arrest became public. Trotter has maintained he forgot the .25 caliber weapon was in his carry on luggage as he was preparing to board a flight to Washington D.C. Trot-

Donne Trotter ter is licensed to carry a weapon, according the Illinois Department of Professional Standards because he works at a private security firm. But his arrest had even his staunchest supporters distancing themselves. Two weeks ago he failed to get the nomination of the Cook County Democratic Party during an open slating. Party leaders decided for an open primary instead. The primary is slated for Feb. 26

followed by the general election on April 9. Trotter has been in the state senate over 20 years and is a ranking member. Many political analysts believe even if he won election to Congress, he may have not wanted to start over as a rookie politician in the world of Washington politics. Trotter disagreed with that opinion and still believes he would have been an asset in Congress. “Today I formally announce my intention to end my candidacy for that position,” Trotter said. “The people of the second Congressional district have critical needs that must be met.” Trotter made his announcement at an event in suburban Lynwood. He said he did not want to “tarnish the election” after realizing that all of the other candidates would have made his felony charge an issue during the campaign. Even during the slating last month some candidates joked publicly about Trotter’s arrest. Constituents had mixed opinions when hearing the news of Trotter’s quitting. Some said they agreed it was the right decision for all involved, while others thought

he should stick it out. “I honestly believe he made a mistake and left the gun in the bag,” said Greg Swanson. “I don’t understand why people wanted him to quit because he had a mental boo-boo. I mean here in Illinois we’ve had politicians convicted of much worse things and they stay in races and some have been kicked out and still got reelected.” Swanson was speaking of state Rep. Derrick Smith, who was expelled from the house general assembly earlier this year after his arrest for allegedly taking a cash bribe, only to be reelected again by the people of his district last month. But Brenda Riley has a different take. She has been a supporter of Trotter from the start, but believes he really damaged himself with is arrest. Riley said the state will now have to pass a concealed carry law after an appeals court decision earlier this month. Riley said there was no way Trotter could chime in on that issue after he was arrested. “The gun issue is a hot topic right now in this state and Donne really…well excuse my humor, but shot himself in the foot,” Riley

said with a laugh. “I think he would have made a great congressman. Hopefully he will consider running again in the future once he gets past all of his legal troubles.” With Trotter officially out, the race, which includes over a dozen candidates, has gotten even more unpredictable. With no clear frontrunner, voters said they will listen to everything said by the candidates. “I was going to vote for Trotter, but now I have no clue and I don’t really know a lot about many of these people,” said Regina Clark from suburban Dolton. “I am familiar with David Miller because he is from Dolton, so I guess right now I’d lean towards him.” Matt Pearson from the Roseland community said he is throwing his support behind Ald. Anthony Beale. He said Beale has been a good alderman and he believes it is time for him to move up in his career. “I think Beale has paid his dues and would do well on a bigger stage,” Pearson said. “I can see him as a person that can bring back federal resources to the district.”

150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. I call upon all Americans to observe this day with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities that celebrate the Emanci-

On December 31, 1862, our Nation marked the end of another year of civil war. At Shiloh and Seven Pines, Harpers Ferry and Antietam, brother had fought against brother. Sister had fought against sister. Blood and bitterness had deepened the divide that separated North from South, eroding the bonds of affection that once united 34 States under a single flag. Slavery still suspended the possibility of an America where life and liberty were the birthright of all, not the province of some. Yet, even in those dark days, light persisted. Hope endured. As the weariness of an old year gave way to the promise of a new one, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation -- courageously declaring that on January 1, 1863, "all persons held as slaves" in rebellious areas "shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free." He opened the Union Army and Navy to African Americans, giving new strength to liberty's cause. And with that document, President Lincoln lent new moral force to the war by making it a fight not just to preserve, but also to empower. He sought to reunite our people not only in government, but also in

freedom that knew no bounds of color or creed. Every battle became a battle for liberty itself. Every struggle became a struggle for equality. Our 16th President also understood that while each of us is entitled to our individual rights and responsibilities, there are certain things we cannot accomplish on our own. Only a Union could serve the hopes of every citizen, knocking down the barriers to opportunity and giving each of us the chance to pursue our highest aspirations. He knew that in these United States, no dream could ever be beyond our reach when we affirm that individual liberty is served, not negated, by seeking the common good. It is that spirit that made emancipation possible and codified it in our Constitution. It is that belief in what we can do together that moved millions to march for justice in the years that followed. And today, it is a legacy we choose not only to remember, but also to make our own. Let us begin this new year by renewing our bonds to one another and reinvesting in the work that lies ahead, confident that we can keep driving freedom's progress in our time. NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim January 1, 2013, as the 150th

Raoul’s expansion of health care purchasing groups takes effect Law gives medium-sized businesses a new way to insure employees State Senator Kwame Raoul (D13th) announced that the law he sponsored to expand the availability of health care purchasing groups took effect January 1, giving more

businesses a new opportunity to offer health insurance to their employees. Health care purchasing groups allow multiple businesses to join together to negotiate lower premiums. Previously, Illinois law had restricted their membership to businesses with 500 or fewer employees; now employers with up to 2,500

workers are eligible. “When more businesses can form health care purchasing groups, the insurer’s risk will decrease and so will the premiums,” Sen. Raoul said. “Purchasing groups have a history of providing superior care at competitive prices, and expanding (Continued on page 6)

OPINION

EDITORIAL THE DJANGO UNCHAINED CATHARSIS “Django Unchained” is a new film by the renowned director Quentin Tarantino. This hotly anticipated and controversial film has a lot to offer, both pro and con, depending upon who you ask. It is an extremely violent film with a number of sub-themes that are timely when considering the state of Black America as we enter the year 2013. Basically, the plot has several threads: Django, played by Jamie Foxx, who became a freed slave after accepting an offer to become a bounty hunter, is out to find and free his wife, (played by Kerry Washington), a slave who was sold because of an attempt to escape with Django, who was a slave on the same plantation at that time. A sub-theme of Black self-hatred is highlighted in the role played by Samuel L. Jackson, a deceitful house slave who went out of his way to destroy Django and to reveal Django’s plot to rescue his wife from her new slave owner and the house slave’s master, played by Leonardo DiCaprio. DiCaprio’s character, in a scene that surprisingly has not received much feedback, uses a skull of one of his former slaves to discuss what he says is a genetic predisposition toward submissiveness among Blacks. He points to a bone located in the slave’s skull that he says indicates this tendency toward submissiveness. This last scenario brings to mind a third, and crucial, theme highlighted by the film: it debunks the notion of the harmless slave. It has long been discussed that some White people have a profound fear that if Blacks get in a position of power they will treat Whites in the same brutal manner that they have been treated. “Django Unchained” underscores this notion with a vengeance. Arguably one of the most violent movies of all time, Black people who have a need for revenge will receive cathartic release when viewing this film. It’s interesting that this movie was released during the same week that “Roots” was re-broadcast on the BET network, and while the movie “Lincoln,” which highlights some of the drama behind the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment, is in theaters. The issue of slavery was touched upon in all three of these cinematic offerings, but “Django Unchained” was the only one that packed a punch from the standpoint of the slave. Django destroyed his enemies, rescued his wife, and emerged without so much as a scratch. As anticipated, the movie has garnered strong feelings. Of special note is criticism leveled by filmmaker Spike Lee, who has come out in opposition to the film because of its depiction of slavery, even though he has not seen it and does not plan to see the movie. With that said, there were implausible and/or distasteful aspects of the film. The Django character left incredible carnage in his wake. If you like guns, you will love this movie! Moreover, some of the dialogue relayed by Samuel L. Jackson’s character was incredibly self-loathing, over-played, and possibly distorted for that time period. Furthermore, the word n!qqer was used repeatedly, and possibly unnecessarily, by both Black and White characters throughout the film. On the other hand, the key redeeming factors of the film were that a Black man would literally go to hell and back to rescue his woman, and that the determination to be free can bear fruit. “Django Unchained,” because of the strong revenge theme, won’t do much for race relations in the age of Obama, but it may underscore the notions of freedom, love and self-determination among Blacks.

I am wondering when the American public is going to get fed up with the Tea Party and/or Republican Party and the games they are playing with our lives. In the Bible, Encyclopedia or any other reference book will we find justification for taxing the low and middle class citizens and the rich needing to have a tax break. As a matter of fact we probably remember that the tax men were thrown out of the Temple for their unjust taxation in biblical times. I don’t understand how our government has come to such a low status morally than what we now are witnessing. I am still trying to get over the racist attitudes that have been condoned regarding our President. I am convinced that no Caucasian President would have been treated like this, and I am certain no Caucasian President has ever been treated like this before. When you consider that President Bush and his cohorts have lied and been caught in the lying and no citizen outrage has been heard, it is unbelievable. Even the so-called liberal commentators (newspaper, radio and television) have been almost mute in “telling it like it is” regarding the “weapons of destruction” and other major lies that have cost

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR FISCAL CLIFF A DISGRACE Dear Editor:

many lives, especially our young service people fighting on foreign soil, who have died based on a lie. I could go on with examples of the disgrace ordinary citizens have endured, some as recent as a few years ago and some decades ago. They are trying to blame this new fiscal debacle on President Obama. They can’t say that the man is ignorant, lazy, shiftless, the stereotypes given to Black men because it’s too far fetched. Although Governor Sununu did in fact say that in the election. With the overwhelming vote President Obama received, only a minority of folks like the Governor (racist to the core) obviously believed it. It is time to stop this insanity. The United States Congress has already fallen over the cliff (fiscally and morally). The Republicans would rather the country go down the tubes, than to vote in the interest of the needy. It is time for us to take action. NOW! We need to throw the bums out!!! Sincerely,

Christmas season that there are hundreds of people who have lost not only their homes and material resources, but also their loved ones. One of the most poignant losses of this season came as the face of evil descended on the little children at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Our emotions have been overwrought and we are left trying to understand what happened. For me, as a fifth generation minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the first thing I did was to pray for the children, staff, teachers and their families. (Continued on page 6)

BEYOND THE RHETORIC

The Future is Bright for Senator John Kerry By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist President Barack Obama has won his re-election. That history is clear and the big question now is who in the Democratic Party will succeed him in the quest for president in 2016. Prior to now it was certain to be Hillary Clinton. But when you look at the present situation doubts about her prospects rise to the fullest. Let’s consider a few current events that will certainly have a consequence on 2016. During the race for 2004, candidate John Kerry spotted the talent of Barack Obama. He gave him a great debut by allowing him to keynote during the Democratic Convention. Barack responded with one of his greatest speeches and from that point on the whole world knows the name Obama. The two have been close ever since but make it a point to keep that friendship in the background. With the exception of his criticism of the Vietnam War and other military endeavors, Senator Kerry’s slate is pretty clean. His strong point is foreign affairs and he chairs the Senate

Harry C. Alford Foreign Relations Committee. When Senator Barbara Boxer botched up the attempt to pass Cap and Trade through the Senate, President Obama asked Senator Kerry to take over the stewardship of the bill. It failed but President Obama’s trust of John Kerry was apparent. Foreign affairs and environmental issues are Senator Kerry’s strong suits.

Let me also disclose that I like John Kerry as a person. I did not support him in the 2004 campaign but he apparently holds no grudge. We held a convention in New Orleans in 2006 in support of the rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina. Senators Kerry and Barack Obama were in the area at the time and we asked both to come and speak. Obama did not respond at all but Senator Kerry immediately accepted. When I went to his hotel room to receive and escort him to the podium he asked me to come in for a few minutes. He struck up a conversation and repeatedly stated that he thought I was a “good man.” I was humbled and reciprocated the compliment. From that point on my opinion of him grew dramatically. So here we are in 2013, and what is the political climate for Democratic presidential prospects? The 2008 primary was bitter. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama camps fought bitterly. Obama won and to keep a good monitor on Hillary he put her in his cabinet as Secretary of State. This was brilliant! She could not go off the “reservation” as this would seem

disloyal and conniving. She was locked into place. In retrospect, her tenure at the State Department has been a complete mess. The world is on “fire.” Our initiative to better relations with Russia has totally failed. In fact, you would have to go back to the Cold War to find worse times. She said she was going to “reset” Russia. She might as well have thrown a “brick” at it. The Middle East and Africa is in upheaval and we can’t seem to get a foot forward in solving the raging issues. Revolution, civil war, insurgency and chaos are running rampant in applicable nations and we don’t have a clue. This all falls into the lap of Hillary Clinton. The saddest situation is that of Libya. The dictator has gone but so has any semblance of peace and governance. We failed our embassy there by turning our back on its safety and now trying to cover it up. It is so similar to the security failures of our embassies in Kenya and Tanzania during the Bill Clinton Administration. Just like then, they identify a “fall person” to put the blame on. They insinuated it was

Susan Rice during the Clinton Administration and then, unbelievably, they threw her under the “bus” once again. It is Clinton 101. Hillary has failed and President Obama will call on his old friend and confidant John Kerry to clean up the mess. I believe he will and in 2016 he will rise exponentially above Hillary. He will also play a role in environmental issues such as the Keystone Pipeline and the Kyoto Protocol. EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson is also “toast.” The State Department will take full control of these issues. Administrator Jackson or “Richard Windsor” as she mysteriously calls herself in secret and illegal emails has announced her resignation before the illegal emails are released via a court order. John Kerry will have a hand in cleaning this up also. In essence, he is going to be the “fix it guy.” By 2016 he will be regarded as a healer and strong leader. Good bye Hillary. Social Security, Medicare should be off the table By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist Feuding Democrats and Republicans did not plunge the country over a financial cliff, but a lively debate will continue in coming months over the role the federal government should play in the lives of its citizens. In one corner are Republicans who contend that federal spending has run amuck – and it should be slashed. In the other corner are Democrats, including President Obama, who make the right oral arguments, but the wrong moves to defend such worthy American staples as Social Security and Medicare. In most political crises, Republicans will fight and Democrats will take flight. Let’s begin with a president who doesn’t seem comfortable in the rough-and-tumble world of politics. He has a tendency to give away the store even before the store opens up its doors for business. As Paul Krugman wrote July 31, 2011 the New York Times, “Republicans will surely be emboldened by the way Mr. Obama keeps folding in the face of their threats. He surrendered last December, extending the Bush tax cuts; he surrendered in the spring when they threatened to shut down the government; The Chicago Crusader

and he has now surrendered on a grand scale to the raw extortion over the debt ceiling. Maybe it’s just me, but I see a pattern here.” Unfortunately, that pattern remains unbroken. A Center for Policy and Budget Priorities blog noted, “Boehner complains that, in what the White House describes as an offer of $1.2 trillion in spending cuts and the same in tax increases, Obama counts interest savings that accrue as spending cuts, thus making the one-to-one ratio illegitimate. “More importantly, however, is that, when viewed correctly and in their entirety, the non-interest spending cuts under the President’s latest offer would actually exceed his proposed tax increases and would roughly equal the spending cuts that Boehner himself proposed in his deficit-related negotiations with the President last year.” And that’s on top of cuts already made. The CBPP also pointed out, “When those negotiations broke down, the President and Congress enacted the 2011 Budget Control Act (BCA), which established annual caps on discretionary spending for each of the next ten years. These caps, which will cut spending by what the White House estimates to be $1 trillion over the next decade, reflected a tentative

George E. Curry agreement by the President and Speaker over discretionary spending in those negotiations.” President Obama has already signaled a willingness to make additional concessions on Social Security and Medicare. Let’s take a closer look at Social Security. A story by FAIR noted, “Social Security is not bloated or poorly run. Its shortfall is primarily the result of people living longer, and therefore drawing benefits longer.” As a CBPP fact sheet observes, “In June 2012, 56 million people, or about one in every six U.S. residents, collected Social Security

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

benefits. While three-quarters of them received benefits as retirees or elderly widow(er)s, another 11 million (19 percent) received disability insurance benefits, and 2 million (4 percent) received benefits as young survivors of deceased workers.” It also noted, “Social Security benefits are much more modest than many people realize. In June 2012, the average Social Security retirement benefit was $1,234 a month, or about $14,800 a year. (The average disabled worker and aged widow received slightly less.) For someone who worked all of his or her adult life at average earnings and retires at 65 in 2012, Social Security benefits replace about 41 percent of past earnings. This replacement rate will slip to about 36 percent for a medium earner retiring at 65 in the future, chiefly because the full retirement age, which has already risen to 66, will climb to 67 over the 20172022 period. “Moreover, most retirees enroll in Medicare’s Supplementary Medical Insurance (also known as Medicare Part B) and have Part B premiums deducted from their Social Security checks. As healthcare costs continue to outpace general inflation, those premiums will take a bigger bite out of their checks. “Social Security benefits are modest by international stanSaturday, January 5, 2013

dards, too. The United States ranks 30th among 34 developed countries in the percentage of a median worker’s earnings that the public-pension system replaces.” Social Security plays an outsized role in the lives of retired African-Americans. “Social Security is a particularly important source of income for groups with low earnings and with less opportunity to save and earn pensions, including African Americans and Hispanics,” CBPP said. “Among beneficiaries aged 65 and older, Social Security represents 90 percent or more of income for 35 percent of elderly white beneficiaries, 42 percent of Asian Americans, 49 percent of Blacks, and 55 percent of Hispanics.” Yes, money spent on Social Security and Medicare is well spent. COMMENTARY

Mentoring, Hard Work and the Hook-Up By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist How will African Americans improve our situation in 2013? Right now, we have higher unemployment than any other population in our nation, less wealth, higher school dropout rates, and more crime in our communities. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said that African American communities had twice the number of negatives and half the number of positives in our country. While the numbers may have shifted somewhat, it is still true that we are more likely to experience negative consequences (teen pregnancy, incarceration, crime) and less likely to experience positives (college graduation, high net worth). Those of us who focus on public policy will look at past discrimination and ways it manifests itself in the present. We will look at the way race-neutral public policy has a racial impact (for example, changing the terms of the Parent Plus loan hits wealth-poor, credit-challenged Black families disproportionately). We will suggest ways to close gaps, some of which may include ways that government investment, such as job creation and job training, can help close these gaps. And we will be right. Whether we fall off the fiscal cliff

Julianne Malveaux (final negotiations are taking place even as I write this), the focus on the level of debt our nation faces suggests that tax reform will reduce tax deductions, some in ways that may increase income inequality, and that spending cuts are imminent. Many of these cuts will be in social programs and educational spending. Again, some of these cuts will widen, not narrow, the wealth and income gaps. What does this mean for Black America in 2013? Pretend that it is Groundhog Day, if you saw the movie. The protagonist wakes up every day to the same day when everything happens the same way. If you keep doing what you have

been doing, you’ll keep getting what you’ve been getting. For Black Americans, this means that if we keep looking external without looking internal, not much will change for us. Yes, it will change for some of us: Those who are educated, middle class, well networked and disciplined are likely to find significant opportunities in our stagnant economy because even stagnant economies churn and create new opportunities. But it won’t change much for those who are less educated, working class, un-networked and undisciplined, or some combination thereof. Education, networks, and discipline can be fixed. But few have an interest in fixing these things in Black America except for Black Americans. So what are we going to do? Susan Taylor has been a passionate advocate of mentorship in the African American community. She began the work when she was editor-in-chief at Essence magazine and left the magazine to expand her reach in that area. She continues to advocate mentorship and to teach us how to be mentors. Her work supports education, networking and discipline. Similarly, in Southeast Washington, D.C., Cora Masters Barry leads the Recreation Wish List Committee and works with the

Southeast Tennis and Learning Center to nurture more than 150 young people year-round (full disclosure – I am treasurer of the Wish List Board). Students are trained in physical fitness through tennis, and are encouraged in their academics through learning. Most board members have hands-on relationships with our young people, who are held to the highest standards. Again, this work supports education, networking and discipline. Most historically Black colleges do the same thing, bringing corporate partners to campuses and exposing students to the many ways they can access employment opportunities. In many cases, the entire campus offers students engaged mentorship. Education, networking and discipline. When people tell the story of the American Dream, they talk about the many ways that hard work will help someone transcend class. They talk about hard work. People who earn the minimum wage work hard. People who make ends meet on public assistance work hard. It’s not just about hard work. It’s about hard work – and the hook up. A corporate leader who is a wonderful friend once said that she could use her position to hook up women and African Americans who needed a hand up. She also indicated that the hook up could

help individuals, but we also, and always, need a hook in to public policy decisions that affect our nation. That means we need a seat around every table where public policy is being made, whether on issues of race, or on issues that seem race-neutral. We should be talking about the deficit, about tax reform, about government spending. We should be talking about international affairs, about world areas of conflict, about our fluctuating currency. As long as we live in this flawed nation, all issues are Black issues. Even with the hook in, we need to offer the hook up. That means embracing or mentoring a child. That means providing an opportunity to someone who is unemployed. That means supporting education through contributions to colleges, but also by providing help to individuals. It’s the same hymn book we’ve been singing from for more than a century. Now we need to sing with more energy. Things won’t change in Black America unless some of us do. We need to both hook in and hook up! Julianne Malveaux is a Washington, D.C.-based economist and writer. She is President Emerita of Bennett College for Women in Greensboro, N.C.

One invalid site is a business in the Englewood community on the South Side. “A long time ago we handed out condoms. A lady from the city dropped off a box of condoms and asked me if I would hand them out to customers,” recalled Charles Thomas, owner of Union Auto Repair, 5834 S. Union St. “I still have the box and a handful left, but have not handed out any in about three years.” However, Adams said it is important to note that condom sites are not chosen by the city. “We leave that up to our partner agencies to choose the locations.

Other locations listed on the website include clothing stores, lounges and even a Baptist church. Still, hair care businesses dominate the list. But that is because “they serve a unique clientele,” said Peggie Applewhite, owner of No Other Place Beauty Shop, 11135 S. Halsted St.

“A lot of our clients are single, and single people are having sex more than married couples. All of my customers are (Black) women, and they usually get condoms for their sons.” Cain’s Barber College, 365 E. 51st St., is another location that distributes condoms. And at Hair Icon, 6454 S. Cottage Grove, manager Laconda Green said she is happy to be a condom distributor. “Every day and all day people come in here to get condoms,” said Green. “We have been a distributor for the last three years.”

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Before I begin this week’s column let me send a shout out to all my readers: HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Here’s hoping that the new year will indeed bring about changes everywhere for the better – world, country, state and county and city!!! Let Ima give a few suggestions for resolutions: PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: I resolve to let Michelle do the negotiating for me. I promise you when she says NO she means

MAYOR RAHM EMANUEL: I promise to tell the truth about the city’s problems, especially the police department. I will admit that the police force is very much undermanned and I will stop making stupid replies such as “if you don’t like the bus fare. . . drive.”

Florida coast without a surf board!! -ImaI COULD DO THAT!!! While Lovie Smith didn’t seem too happy when the axe fell on him on New Year’s Eve, I can

imagine that his wife is not too unhappy ‘cause they will have 5 million dollars to take care of things while they look for a new job. You know Ima only had one thing against Lovie, this money won’t be shared with a sistah. But I wish the Bears would pick me up to do something, ‘cause if ’n I

was just a janitress, the separation pay ought to be good. I could definitely do that!!! -ImaHERE’S TO A GOOD 2013!!! Wake me up before it is over!!!

COUNTY BOARD PRESIDENT: I promise to let Ima pick me a new blue suit for 2013 and wear an earphone so my staff can tell me who folks are, I can then address folks I have met 100 times by their names. Or take acting lessons so at least I can look like I have seen them before. JESSE JACKSON, JR.: I promise to be nicer when and if there are no charges placed against me and I will never date a white woman again. MEL REYNOLDS: I promise to try to regain my sanity and drop out of the race for Congressman of the 2nd District. NEW COACH OF THE BEARS: I will find out how long the owners and managers of the Bears will give me to get the team in the playoffs although I realize I will have no control over the players and other essentials to win. -ImaTIME FOR A REAL CHANGE!!!

President Barack Obama NO!! That ought to fix backboneless Boehner, hard nose McConnell and all of the ridiculous Tea Partiers!!! GOVERNOR PAT QUINN: I promise that I will not run for re-election since I have done vir-

This group of misfits and donothings for the most part, need to get the hell out of Washington, never to return. Let’s start with crying butt Boehner, don’t forget about Wannabe Cantor and all of the hateful Tea Partiers that would vote against a bill to benefit themselves if it was introduced by a Democrat. Paul Ryan needs to build an igloo in Wisconsin for himself and Governor Walker and hire Ima to seal the door. Mutt Romney already got the memo from Ima to fade away into oblivion and I hope he keeps his promise to do just that. Allen West, go surfing on the

Wal-Mart lawyer receives excellence award Walter Sutton, associate general counsel for Wal-Mart Stores Inc. in Bentonville, Ark., will receive the 2013 Spirit of Excellence Award from the American Bar Association Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession. The award, which celebrates the accomplishments of lawyers who promote a more racially and ethnically diverse legal profession, will be presented Feb. 9 at the Hilton Anatole during the ABA Midyear Meeting in Dallas. A trailblazer in diversity, Sutton has transcended racial barriers throughout his career. He was the first African-American to work as a lawyer at both Tenneco Oil Co. and Texas Instruments. He was the first African-American to receive a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Dallas. He was the first African-American to head the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s regional counsel’s office in Dallas and the Dallas Environmental Health Advisory Committee. The Dallas Bar Association presented Dr. Sutton with the 2012 Martin Luther King Award, which is given to a leader who demonstrates the values and ideals of Dr. King. ABA Past President Wm. T.

mission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession is to promote racial and ethnic diversity and inclusion within the legal profession. It serves as a catalyst for change, so that the profession may more accurately reflect the racial and ethnic diversity of society, and better serve society. The Commission takes actions to promote the recruitment, hiring, promotion and advancement of attorneys of color, and works to ensure equal membership and employment opportunities for diverse lawyers in the American Bar Association. The Commission accomplishes these goals through many initiatives, activities and programs, including the Spirit of Excellence Award.

(Bill) Robinson also recognized Dr. Sutton with an ABA Presidential Citation during the association’s 2012 Annual Meeting. At Wal-Mart, Sutton is responsible for the development and coordination of diversity for its legal department. He also serves as the chairman of the Board of Trustees at Wiley College, a four-year, private, historically Black, liberal arts college in Marshall, Texas. “Walter Sutton epitomizes the values advanced by the Spirit of Excellence Award. His illustrious career has led him all over the country, from corporations to schools to government roles and back,” said Reginald Turner, the chair of the ABA Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession. “At every step, he has taken care to perform with professionalism, diligence and collegiality, and to advocate for diversity and inclusion with tremendous effectiveness,” Turner added. “Walter has secured his place in history as a champion of equal opportunities in our noble profession. He continues to mentor and inspire young lawyers and law students who are certain to follow in his path.” The mission of the ABA Com-

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Continued from page 4) The second thing I did was recognize that the teachers and children of Sandy Hook weren’t able to pray as a matter of policy — even as their very lives were threatened. That’s been the case since prayer was banned from public schools back in 1963. I imagined how the students and teachers must have been huddled together, frightened and trembling, and not able to call on the name of Jesus without breaking the rules. As I considered those little school children huddling and hoping to live, I also couldn’t help but think of the unborn babies trembling in the wombs of their mothers as abortionists take away their chance at life. At the same time that our children were under attack in Sandy Hook, there were also little kindergarten children being stabbed to death in China. Oh my. This would seem hopeless if we couldn’t have the blessed promise of Jesus, especially in this season. Please bear with me as I recall that even the joyous birth of Jesus was surrounded by spiritual forces that caused hundreds of little Hebrew baby boys to be slaughtered as the king tried to prevent the birth of a savior. Similar shifts occurred during the time of the birth of Moses, the Old Testament prophet who told phar-

aoh that God said: “Let my people go.” I can’t help wonder what would happen if we would lift up our eyes to the hills where our help comes from these days? I know that we must be sensitive and prayerful, yet we can still have hope, and must not feel guilty for being able to thank God for Jesus by singing a sweet Christmas Carol or two this Christmas (past) day. I’m not saying we shouldn’t shed tears for those who lost so much. Yet, as we pray in the midst of all of the horrors around us, let us also remember that God is still supreme. In the words of my dearly departed grandfather, Dr. Martin Luther King, Sr., let us “thank God for what we have left.” Let us be grateful for his love. Let us continue to pray, according to 2 Chronicles 7:14. We can all take heart that humanity is still filled with stories of love, compassion, and triumph. Maybe we should turn off the gun control debates which will distract us from the real reason for this season. Instead of focusing on banning guns, why can’t our government officials work to put prayer back in schools? Such an act of compassion would surely be a comfort and could even make the world a better place. Who can argue that a reasonable firearms policy that protects the

mentally challenged, their families and the broader communities wouldn’t be a good idea? We should have come to this conclusion long before the Sandy Hook tragedy. It is commendable that the cry for help is finally being heard. But there is still a need to bring love and peace back into the media rather than the gratuitous violence and promiscuous sex that floods our airwaves and permeates the living rooms and family rooms of our homes, consuming the minds and souls of our children. How many boxes and cartons of violent, anti-family DVDs, video games, software, CDs and other similar media were already gift wrapped and ready to burst into the lives of our children on Christmas day? I can only pray that agape love will prevail over the material, mercenary clouds that threaten to rain on our peace. And remember: Don't leave Jesus out of the season, because he's the reason for the season. (Hope you had a) Merry Christmas! For unto us a son is given, for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son Jesus! (Alveda C. King is the daughter of the late slain civil rights activist Rev. A. D. South Shore Drill Team struggling to attend presidential parade By Wendell Hutson Four years ago the South Shore Drill Team applied but was not invited to participate in President Barack Obama’s inaugural parade in Washington, D.C. However, this time around the 32-year old non-profit organization for youth was invited as one of 50 groups set to participate in the Jan. 21 event, but with one stipulation. Each group participating is responsible for transportation and lodging to and from the event, according to the Joint Task Force National Capital Region, which organizes the parade with the Presidential Inaugural Committee. And the estimated cost for the 50 youth and 10 adults set to represent the organization at the parade is $45,000, said Stella Natufe-Smith, events coordinator for the South Shore Drill Team, 7218 S. South Chicago Ave. “We found out from the White House Dec. 26 that our application was accepted this time and we have been trying to raise money ever since,” she said. “One way or the other we will get there. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for our kids and we will not disappoint them.” As of Jan. 1, the drill team, made up of 300 Black youth, had only raised $1,000. The group has been practicing everyday since learning they were chosen to perform in the parade. Despite not having enough money yet to attend the organization has already made hotel reservations. According to Natufe-Smith, the group will stay at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center in Chevy

Chase, MD from Jan. 19 to 21. Each year youth between the ages 8 and 21 perform 125 shows, and practice weekly at the Gary Comer Youth Center on the South Side, which was built with the drill team in mind, according to Ayoka Samuels, senior program director for the Gary Comer Youth Center, which was founded in 2006 by the late Gary Comer, who also grew up in Grand Crossing neighborhood on the South Side. “Prior to the Comer Center the South Shore Drill Team practiced wherever they could find enough space. Church basements, parks, you name it,” Samuels said. “Now they practice here for free as our anchor tenant. (And) many of the youth with the drill team also participates in our programs as well.” To ensure the group got selected this year Natufe-Smith said it spent the past four years networking with politicians. “This past May we performed for first lady Michelle Obama during the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) summit in Chicago. She hosted a luncheon for the wives of NATO leaders at the Gary Comer Center,” added Natufe-Smith. “We also performed at Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s inaugural last year.” Most performances by the drill team are paid events but parade appearances, such as the annual Bud Billiken Parade, are free shows. Donations are accepted online at southshoredrillteam.org and “every penny collected will be spent on the kids,” added Natufe-Smith. The group, founded in 1980, serves as a lifeline for its members, “helping young people in some of Chicago’s most dangerous neigh-

The Bookworm Sez

Best Of 2012 Drivel, dreck, and what the heck. That kind of sums up the books that were released in 2012. There were some good things, some downright awful things, and some things that, well, they weren’t bad but they weren’t the best books you’ve ever read, either. And then there were the gems. I read just over 270 books this year, and (fortunate me!) it was hard to decide on just 5 picks in the three categories below. But here they are, in no certain order, my personal Best Of from 2012…. Adult Fiction For me, the world totally ceased to exist while I was reading “The Absolutist” by John Boyne. Set in the years after World War I, it’s the story of a former soldier who decides to return some letters to the sister of the friend who wrote them. Years ago, he knew the woman’s brother – had a crush on him, in fact – but the man is now dead, and when the sister asks what happened, the narrator tells her. What happens left me absolutely breathless. I have to admit: I’m not a major Eric Jerome Dickey reader. Some of his books leave me cold but “An Accidental Affair” chilled me with the action and double-crossing that happens to the books’ narrator, who catches his beloved wife sleeping with another man. What he has to do to get her out of trouble will make you turn the pages so fast, you’ll practically rip them. Here’s another end-of-the-war novel I loved: “Freeman” by Leonard Pitts, Jr. It’s the story of a former slave who decides to find his wife at the end of the Civil War. He was free in Philadelphia, The Chicago Crusader

she was enslaved in Mississippi and there’s also a parallel story that moves theirs along. The three tales toget her make this a novel that’ll keep you in your chair for a good long time. “The Midwife of Hope River” by Patricia Harman tells the story of a woman who becomes a midwife in the years before the Depression. In order to escape her past, she moves to the foot of the Appalachian Mountains to work, but her ways are not like the old ways. This book sings with beauty, love, and appreciation for life and for women. You know you’ve got a good book when you forget that it’s fiction, which pretty much sums up this novel. No, I wasn’t only hooked on historical novels this year; “The Trial of Fallen Angels” by James Kimmel, Jr. is my last pick in this category because it’s one of those novels that asks you to suspend what you don’t know because, well, you really don’t know it. It’s the story of a woman who wakes up in a train station, dead. She was a lawyer in life, and she’ll be a lawyer in death, but the court system in this Purgatory isn’t what she’s used to at all. This is a novel of six-degrees-of-separation and of forgiveness, and that’s why it’s on this Best of 2012. Honorable mention in this category: “The Dog Who Danced” by Susan Wilson. Adult Non-Fiction “Concussions and Our Kids” by Robert Cantu, M.D. and Mark Hyman might seem like an odd pick for a Best Of list, but here it is. I put this book on here because what Cantu has to say is chilling, horrifying, and cautionary. If you’re a par-

ent, an athlete, or a sports fan, this may be mandatory reading for this coming year. The sad fact is that “God’s Hotel” by Victoria Sweet won’t be on any bestseller’s lists. Too bad, because it’s a Zen-like memoir of the author’s years spent as a doctor in a California almshouse. As she was working, she began to study the works of a Medieval nun who was also a healer, and that – Medieval times coupled with stories of modern medicine – make this a wonderful, strangely calming book to find. Like just about everybody in the country, I had my fill of politics, which is why I was surprised to love “Indomitable Will: LBJ and the Presidency” by Mark K. Updegrove so much. This book, consisting of snippets of interviews of those who worked with, lived with, and knew Lyndon Baines Johnson, is a quick but very fascinating look at a (perhaps unfairly) much-maligned man in office. It taught me a lot, and it sets a lot of records straight. This is a nice antidote to politics-as-usual, which is why it’s on this list. “The Undead” by Dick Teresi absolutely scared the daylights out of me! This is a book that explores death; specifically, when it occurs which, as it turns out, we don’t fully know. Teresi then turns his attention to the issue of organ donation and… oh, my, if I tell you anything more, I won’t sleep tonight. Just go read the book. And with out further ado, the last book on this list is “Wait: The Art and Science of Delay” by Frank Partnoy, which is a scientific book about procrastination and why it’s good for business,

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

health and sports. Partnoy also explains why you should teach your kids to delay gratification, why snap decisions are often wrong, and why employers should embrace slower workers. Honorable mentions in this category: “Sweet Hell on Fire” by Sara Lunsford and “Gypsy Boy” by Mikey Walsh. Kids Books Not just for kids, “Between the Lines” by Jodi Picoult and Samantha Van Leer is the story of a girl who falls in love with a fairy-tale Prince. The difference is that the Prince is really in a fairytale – he lives in a book – which means that Happily Ever After may be only words. This is perfect for readers ages 12-to-Mom because, hey, it is Jodi Picoult, after all, right? Speaking of fairy tales, “Cinder” by Marissa Meyer barely resembles the classic on which it’s based. This Cinderella lives in the future, and she’s a cyborg but she can’t let anybody know. When she meets the Handsome Prince accidentally, what happens definitely is not Happily Ever After. This is one of those books that 12-to-17year- olds will never want to end. The good news is that there’s a sequel due out in February. Set in Victorian times, “Splendors and Glooms” by Laura Amy Schlitz is the story of two orphan children who are enslaved by an evil puppeteer. After they perform at the birthday party of a

rich little girl and she disappears, the children must figure out a way to escape and save the day. This is a dark but thoroughly enjoyable book along the lines of the Lemony Snicket novels, and it’s great for 9-to-13-year-olds with a love for magical thrills. There was a lot to love about “Unbored: The Essential Field Guide to Serious Fun” by Joshua Glenn & Elizabeth Foy Larsen, mostly because it covers all kinds of interests for kids of all ages. There are indoor activities, outside things to do, rainy-day fun, quiet-time stories, trivia, and more. Older kids will enjoy this book and, with par -ental help, younger kids will get a kick out of it, too. And finally, “What the Dog Said” by Randi Reisfeld, with HB Gilmour makes this list because it’s so darn different. It’s the story of a smart teenager who’s dealing with too many problems at home and then, to make matters worse, her clueless sister adopts a dog. When the pup starts to talk and give advice, everybody thinks the teen’s telling a shaggy-dog story but she’s not. It’s light and cute. Nothing earth-shattering; just cute. Honorable Mention in this category: “Pinned” by Sharon G. Flake. And there you are. Fifteen books (and four bonuses) to help you use those gift certificates under the tree, to add to your Wish List, to dig deep and find for those cold winter months. Happy Reading!

Bears fans have mixed feelings about Lovie’s firing By J. Coyden Palmer On New Year’s Eve the Chicago Bears fired their first and only Black head coach in franchise history. After nine years with one Super Bowl appearance and three divisional titles, Lovie Smith was let go after the Bears missed the playoffs for the second year in a row and five of the last six seasons. Calls for Smith to go had been coming since the middle of the season when the Bears offense began to struggle. Although the Bears started this year 7-1, the team would win only three of their last eight games and none of those wins came against teams with a winning record. Smith’s departure has lit up Chicago airwaves since it was an-

Lovie Smith nounced. Black Chicagoans have had their say during casual conversation and many still do not know what to make of Smith’s fir-

ing. “I think it was probably necessary but I also think it was not all his fault why the team tanked,” said fan Linda Johnson. “I mean a lot of it was on the crappy players we had. You can only coach the talent that you have and that was not all on Lovie.” Mike Trout was against the firing for the concerns Johnson expressed. Smith said the offensive line the Bears had was horrible and put the Bears in a no-win situation. “We have a great wide receiver, a great quarterback and a good running back in Matt Forte, but that o-line was horrible,” he said. “Lovie did the best he could with what he had.” But Herman Weaver, who

coaches youth football in Matteson, said he is still a Lovie fan, but you could see his limitations as a coach. Weaver said Smith never seemed to make adjustments during his tenure and coached as if he only had one game plan. “He was outcoached on many occasions especially after halftime,” Weaver said. “That’s when you make your adjustments based off what is working and what is not during the game. He never seemed to do that and it showed.” Bridgette Booker was glad to see Smith go. She said Lovie should have been gone five years ago and was elated with the news. “I stopped liking him after we lost in the Super Bowl,” Booker said. “I thought we should have

won that game and a bunch of other games during his time as a coach. Not only were we losing, but Lovie had the smug condescending attitude that really turned me off.” With a new general manager and fans demanding change, the Bears said Smith’s job performance was the basis of their decision. “Our number one goal has to be to win championships,” said Bears General Manager Phil Emery. “And to win championships, we must be in contention on a consistent basis. And to be in contention, we have to be in the playoffs on a consistent basis.” Smith had an 81-63 regular-sea(Continued on page 16)

THE WILMINGTON TEN PARDONED

(Continued from page 1) jured themselves. Amnesty International issued a blistering report declaring the Wilmington Ten “political prisoners of conscience.” The CBS News program “60 Minutes” did a one-hour expose’ proving that the evidence against the Wilmington Ten had been fabricated by the prosecution. And after then North Carolina Governor James B. Hunt refused to pardon the Ten, but did commute their sentences in 1978, two years later, the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals overturned all of the convictions, based on gross prosecutorial misconduct and various violations of constitutional rights. The appeals court directed North Carolina to either retry the defendants, or dismiss all charges, but the state did nothing for the past 32 years. In March 2011, the National Newspaper Publishers Association, at the urging of Wilmington Journal publisher Mary Alice Thatch, voted to pursue pardons of innocence for the Wilmington Ten. That effort got underway in earnest in January 2012, and after a series of NNPA stories based on an investigation that revealed never-before-seen court records proving prosecutorial corruption, the mainstream media, including the New York Times, caught on, and began editorially pushing for pardoning the Wilmington Ten. Change.org, the NAACP and the Wilmington Ten garnered over 144,000 petition signatures for the cause. Gov. Perdue’s pardons legally mean that the accused did not commit the crimes they were convicted of. The governor’s decision was roundly hailed. “Gov. Perdue’s historic action on

Monday (December 31) does not remove the past forty years of injustice against ten innocent American citizens - North Carolinians who stood up for equal treatment under the law in our public education system,” the Wilmington Ten Pardons of Innocence Project, a justice outreach effort of the National Newspaper Publishers Association and the Wilmington Journal newspaper, said in a statement. “But [the governor’s pardon] does correct the historical record, that Connie Tindall, Jerry Jacobs, William Joe Wright, Anne Sheppard, Wayne Moore, Marvin Patrick, James McKoy, Willie Earl Vereen, Reginald Epps and the Rev. Dr. Benjamin Chavis, were indeed innocent of all charges falsely assessed to them by a corrupt prosecutor who, to this day, has not answered for what he did.” Governor Perdue agreed that revelations of the racist and illegal trial tactics of Wilmington Ten prosecutor Jay Stroud – which included documented handwritten evidence of seeking “KKK and Uncle Tomtype” jurors; bribing witnesses to commit perjury; hiding exculpatory evidence of a witness’ mental illness from the defense; and deliberately forcing a mistrial so that he could get both the judge and jury that would guarantee convictions – corrupt the criminal justice system, and shamed the state. Perdue called it “naked racism.” “This conduct is disgraceful,” the governor said in her statement. “It is utterly incompatible with basic notions of fairness, and with every ideal that North Carolina holds dear. The legitimacy of our criminal justice system hinges on it operating in a fair and equitable manner, with justice being dispensed based on innocence or guilt – not based on race or other forms of prejudice.”

“That did not happen here,” Perdue continued. “Instead, these convictions were tainted by naked racism and represent an ugly stain on North Carolina’s criminal justice system that cannot be allowed to stand any longer.” “This is a great day for the people, and the movement,” Dr. Benjamin Chavis, leader of the Wilmington Ten, told the Wilmington Journal Monday. “This is a very rare victory.” Civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton agreed.

“It was a significant victory and all of you should be commended,” Sharpton, who pushed the pardon effort on both of his radio programs last weekend, said in congratulations. North Carolina NAACP President Rev. William Barber, who partnered with the Wilmington Ten Pardons of Innocence, noted the history. “Not only will the civil rights and human rights communities honor this act, but history itself will record this day as groundbreaking,” Barber

told reporters in Raleigh Monday. “On the eve of the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, Governor Perdue has proclaimed a contemporary emancipation for these freedom fighters.” “These pardons are not only for North Carolina but also for the nation and for the world,” Barber continued. “We honor the Governor’s noble, courageous and righteous decision today and we commend her heart’s steadfast commitment to justice.”
