Obama Challenges Congress ployment. Corporate profits have rocketed to all-time highs – but for more than a decade, wages and incomes have barely budged. It is our generation’s task, then, to reignite the true engine of America’s economic growth – a rising, thriving middle class.” Referring to the poor, Obama called for building “new ladders of opportunity into the middle class for all who are willing to climb them.” One of those ladders would be raising the minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $9 an hour by the end of 2015, a move White House officials said would be part of an effort to lift as many as 15 million people out of poverty. “Tonight, let’s declare that in the wealthiest nation on Earth, no one who works fulltime should have to live in poverty, and raise the federal minimum wage to $9 an hour,” he said. “This single step would raise the incomes of millions of working families. It could mean the difference between groceries

By George E. Curry NNPA Editor-in-Chief WASHINGTON (NNPA) – After laying out a progressive agenda for his second term in his inaugural address, President Obama followed up Tuesday night with a series of specific proposals in his State of the Union address that include increasing and indexing the minimum wage, repairing deteriorated infrastructure, and investing in education and clean energy. “It is our unfinished task to restore the basic bargain that built this country – the idea that if you work hard and meet your responsibilities, you can get ahead, no matter where you come from, what you look like, or who you love,” Obama said in his first address to a joint session of Congress since his re-election to a second term. “It is our unfinished task to make sure that this government works on behalf of the many, and not just the few; that it encourages free enterprise, rewards individual initiative, and opens the doors of opportunity to every child across this great nation.” Obama also announced that another 34,000 American troops will be withdrawn from Afghanistan by next February, down from 66,000. He said by the end of 2014, the war will be over. The president began his speech by noting some major accomplishments of his first term. “Tonight, thanks to the grit and determination of the American people, there is much progress to report. After a decade of grinding war, our brave men and women in uniform are coming home. After years of grueling recession, our businesses have created over 6 million new jobs. We buy more American cars than we have in five years, and less foreign oil than we have in 20. Our housing market is healing, our stock market is rebounding, and consumers, patients, and homeowners enjoy stronger protections than ever before. Together, we have cleared away the rubble of crisis, and can say with renewed confidence that the state of our union is stronger.” But not strong enough, the president acknowledged. “… We gather here knowing that there are millions of Americans whose hard work and dedication have not yet been rewarded,” he said. “Our economy is adding jobs – but too many people still can’t find full-time em-

Sense of relief at King after charges filed in Pendleton case By J. Coyden Palmer News of charges of first-degree murder being filed against two men in the Hadiya Pendleton case came as the King College Prep girl’s basketball team was playing in the first round of the state playoff game at the school Monday night. A moment of silence was held for Hadiya before the game, who also was a majorette and member of the girl’s volleyball team at the school. Basketball Coach Jonathan Dirkins, who also coached Hadiya on the volleyball team, was cautiously optimistic upon hearing the news. “Obviously we are very happy with this news, but we really hope these are

After the game they dedicated the win to their fallen schoolmate. Dirkins believes his team was motivated by Pendleton’s death and he said much of the school has still been walking around in a daze ever since the incident took place. Pendleton was with several of her teammates when she was allegedly shot by Michael Ward, 18. CPS shares list of possible closures

Second Round of Phase II Community Meetings Begin Today, Parents and Community Members Urged to Attend The Chicago Public Schools (CPS) Chief Executive Officer Dr. Barbara Byrd-Bennett released the results of a review on the recommendations of the independent Commission on School Utilization that list 129 schools under consideration for closure. She also released a detailed set of planning criteria district officials are using to address the CPS budget and facilities crisis. According to CPS officials, the district faces a $1 billion deficit in the coming fiscal year, while nearly half of CPS’ schools are underutilized, stretching resources thin and limiting the District’s ability to provide every

student with a well-rounded and highquality education. This set of criteria will help guide the process of identifying underutilized schools that will be combined with high-performing schools in order to free up resources to improve education across the District. “As a former teacher and principal, I know that our limited education resources are spread much too thin,” said CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett. “By combining schools that lack sufficient numbers of students, we can redirect our limited resources to give all of our children the quality education they need and deserve to succeed.” Of the 330 underutilized schools in CPS, 201 schools have been removed from consideration for closure after receiving community feedback collected by the Commission as well as by CPS

over the last two weeks from more than 8,500 parents and community members who participated in one of 15 meetings held in each of its School Networks. While 129 schools remain under consideration, this is only a preliminary list and more schools are expected to be removed over the next several weeks as CPS continues to gather feedback from communities. Currently, the District has space for over 511,000 students, but only 403,000 are enrolled. Nearly 140 schools are more than half empty. Byrd-Bennett believes that CPS’s limited resources must be used wisely so the District can fully invest in all students and ensure that all schools can benefit from new technologies, playgrounds, libraries, music and art, counselors, nurses and air condition-

ing. She added that those investments are not possible if CPS continues to maintain half empty schools and crumbling buildings. Last month, in response to the Commission on School Utilization’s interim report, CPS announced it would not consider high schools and high-performing Level 1 schools. Today, based on additional community feedback and additional commission recommendations from their interim report, CPS will remove from potential closure those schools meeting the following criteria: • High schools • High performing, Level 1 schools • Schools in the process of adding grades that are expected to reach efficient utilization based on enrollment trends • Schools with greater than 600 students enrolled on 20th day of SY2012-13 • Schools with a utilization rate of at least 70% in SY2012-13 • Schools that have recently experienced a significant school action. Emanuel names Jackson replacement By J. Coyden Palmer Looking to break from the past, Mayor Rahm Emanuel has tapped a political novice to be the next alderman of the city’s 7th Ward on the South Side. Natashia Holmes, a former official at the Illinois Department of Transportation and policy expert was introduced at a press conference at the South Shore library Feb. 11. Holmes, will finish the term vacated by Sandi Jackson who resigned last month. In Emanuel’s first appointment of an alderman since he was elected mayor, he said he wanted to give the ward a “fresh start” and select a person not connected to the families of the two previous aldermen of the ward. “Natashia represents a clear break with the past and a new beginning,” Emanuel began. “She does not come out of either families or histories of political institutions. She’s always been interested one way or another [in] public service. Here we have a situation in the 7th Ward, given the history, and we should be cog-

nizant and open about it, that you have somebody that doesn’t come out of that and I think that’s a good thing ... It’s an opportunity for a fresh start.” Holmes has resigned from her job with IDOT. She has a bachelor’s degree from Alabama State University, a master’s of community planning degree from Auburn University and a law degree from Kent College of Law. Her only experience with running for a position is her time as a member on a local school council. “One of the things that I liked is that Natashia ran for the school board and she doesn’t have any kids in the school,” Emanuel said. “It spoke volumes that she understood that one of the anchors in the community was the school and the education of our children.” Holmes said she did not think she had much of a chance when the process began. She considered herself a “long shot” but decided to take a chance anyway. “I am very excited about this opportunity and I look forward to doing my best to represent the

Obama Challenges Congress families that are already struggling, or by forcing communities to lay off more teachers, cops, and firefighters. Most Americans – Democrats, Republicans, and Independents – understand that we can’t just cut our way to prosperity. They know that broad-based economic growth requires a balanced approach to deficit reduction, with spending cuts and revenue, and with everybody doing their fair share. And that’s the approach I offer tonight,” President Obama said. “On Medicare, I’m prepared to enact reforms that will achieve the same amount of health care savings by the beginning of the next decade as the reforms proposed by the bipartisan Simpson-Bowles commission. Already, the Affordable Care Act is helping to slow the growth of health care costs. The reforms I’m proposing go even further. We’ll reduce taxpayer subsidies to prescription drug companies and ask more from the wealthiest seniors. We’ll bring down costs by changing the way our government pays for Medicare, because our medical bills shouldn’t be based on the number of tests ordered or days spent in the hospital – they should be based on the quality of care that our seniors receive. And I am open to additional reforms from both parties, so long as they don’t

or the food bank; rent or eviction; scraping by or finally getting ahead. For businesses across the country, it would mean customers with more money in their pockets. In fact, working folks shouldn’t have to wait year after year for the minimum wage to go up while CEO pay has never been higher. So here’s an idea that Gov. Romney and I actually agreed on last year: let’s tie the minimum wage to the cost of living, so that it finally becomes a wage you can live on. Also addressing the jobs issue, Obama said: “A year and a half ago, I put forward an American Jobs Act that independent economists said would create more than 1 million new jobs. I thank the last Congress for passing some of that agenda, and I urge this Congress to pass the rest.” The president did not call for a cap on carbon emissions, as some environmentalists had hoped, but promised to increase fuel efficiency of vehicles and double renewable energy. Obama also proposed a “Fix-ItFirst” program that would put people to work on infrastructure projects, such as repairing bridges and roads across the country. Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said in his Republican response,

“Presidents in both parties … have known that our free-enterprise economy is the source of our middle-class prosperity. But President Obama? He believes it’s the cause of our problems.” President Obama announced that he is appointing a non-partisan commission to improve voting in the U.S. “We must all do our part to make sure our God-given rights are protected here at home. That includes our most fundamental right as citizens: the right to vote. When any Americans – no matter where they live or what their party – are denied that right simply because they can’t wait for five, six, seven hours just to cast their ballot, we are betraying our ideals.” It is unclear whether Obama can get his domestic proposals passed in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives. In a speech that focused primarily on reinvigorating the economy, President Obama expressed a willingness to make some changes to key social programs, but none that would destroy them. “… We can’t ask senior citizens and working families to shoulder the entire burden of deficit reduction while asking nothing more from the wealthiest and most powerful. We won’t grow the middle class simply by shifting the cost of health care or college onto

violate the guarantee of a secure retirement.” With families touched by gun violence looking on, the president urged Congress to enact new gun legislation. “Each of these proposals deserves a vote in Congress,” he said. “If you want to vote no, that’s your choice. But these proposals deserve a vote. Because in the two months since Newtown, more than a thousand birthdays, graduations, and anniversaries have been stolen from our lives by a bullet from a gun.” One of those bullets struck close to home – literally. “One of those we lost was a young girl named Hadiya Pendleton. She was 15 years old. She loved Fig Newtons and lip gloss. She was a majorette. She was so good to her friends, they all thought they were her best friend. Just three weeks ago, she was here, in Washington, with her classmates, performing for her country at my inauguration. And a week later, she was shot and killed in a Chicago park after school, just a mile away from my house,” he said. “Hadiya’s parents, Nate and Cleo, are in this chamber tonight, along with more than two dozen Americans whose lives have been torn apart by gun violence. They deserve a vote. “Gabby Giffords deserves a vote. Saturday, February 16, 2013

“The families of Newtown deserve a vote. “The families of Aurora deserve a vote. “The families of Oak Creek, and Tucson, and Blacksburg, and the countless other communities ripped open by gun violence – they deserve a simple vote.” And, the president said, children deserve a quality education. “Tonight, I propose working with states to make high-quality preschool available to every child in America,” Obama said. “Every dollar we invest in high-quality early education can save more than seven dollars later on – by boosting graduation rates, reducing teen pregnancy, even reducing violent crime.” President Obama called on Congress to pass immigration reform. “Real reform means establishing a responsible pathway to earned citizenship – a path that includes passing a background check, paying taxes and a meaningful penalty, learning English, and going to the back of the line behind the folks trying to come here legally,” President Obama said. “And real reform means fixing the legal immigration system to cut waiting periods, reduce bureaucracy, and attract the highly-skilled entrepreneurs and engineers that will help create jobs and grow our economy.” 3

OPINION

EDITORIAL SOME BLACK HISTORY MONTH THOUGHTS February is Black History Month. It is a time to celebrate the achievements of African Americans, but also of Africans throughout the Diaspora. Just about everywhere that you may go in the world, you will find Black people. Moreover, you will also find that in many surprising ways Black people have contributed to global culture. We have been architects, scientists, philosophers, journalists, clergymen, engineers, artists, entrepreneurs, dancers, photographers, and other endeavors too numerous to name. Why is it then that many of our children today aspire to only a few careers? In the broader society, doctors and lawyers are universally lauded and held in high esteem. It is no surprise, then, that often these careers will be the first ones that our children will identify when asked about their career aspirations. After the obligatory "doctor" or "lawyer" selection of a career, too often our children pigeon-hole themselves and aspire to sports or entertainment careers. It is interesting that you will see youngsters who are under 5 feet tall unrealistically aspiring to be basketball greats. This is not to say that it can't happen, but it would be a long shot (pun intended). Another career held in a golden light by African American youth is that of the rapper - almost everyone thinks that he or she can become outstanding performers in this genre. This is probably because there are many who have succeeded. Unfortunately, some of those who have become prosperous did so at the expense of the well-being of the Black community. The topics of this entertainment far more often than not deal with wanton materialism, sex, machismo, misogyny, and very, very seldom real love, either the romantic variety or just a concern for others. The point to consider is that Black history conjures up a plethora of experiences. We have not been confined to any particular realm of endeavor. And though it is true that we were often relegated to menial roles in popular culture, for example, in movies, we have also had Oscar Michaeux, Paul Robeson, Jack Johnson, Lena Horne and Ethel Waters. We have also founded newspapers, flown in space as astronauts, excelled as race horse jockeys (and disc jockeys), and invented many, many things that provide conveniences for today's world. As we consider the accomplishments of Africans and African Americans during this special month, it might be a good idea to help a young person broaden her or his horizon regarding the possibilities that exist; there are worlds to conquer. It is interesting to note that, as we have been fortunate enough to see the election of an African American president, this has not completely captured the minds of many African American youth. Surprisingly, for some reason, a lot of youth do not identify with successful Blacks; they somehow see these people as "different" from themselves. This is particularly true of what are referred to as "street" kids. As we move into the future we must remember that we are creating history in the here and now, and that the actions that we take will determine the quality of future history. If we take upon ourselves the responsibility of showing at least one youth the possibilities of a great future regarding diverse career choices, we can go a long way to ensure the success of our progeny. A luta continua.

My feelings are when First Lady Michelle Obama came home to Chicago last Saturday for Hadiya Pendleton’s funeral, it surely was not for political reasons as some of the President Barack Obama’s detractors would have us believe. It is extremely unfortunate, at least in my opinion, that people like former Congressman Joe Walsh tried to turn Mrs. Obama’s gesture into political theatre. His comments about her visit demonstrate the amount of hate some of those Tea Party members have for the Obamas. Michelle Obama, opting to return to her hometown to attend the 15-year-old’s funeral speaks volumes about how this killing has affected her. The Obama’s older daughter, Malia, is just a year younger than Hadiya, and surely that must have made the December murder hit even closer to home for the Obamas, especially the first lady. Those who petitioned and called for the President to attend the funeral and make a speech on violence here in Chicago didn’t seem to take into account there are world issues he is dealing with on a daily, if not hourly basis.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Michelle Obama’s visit was not political Dear Editor:

And if the President had flown in for the funeral, made a speech and headed back to D.C. or some other point; there would have been criticism he didn’t devote sufficient time to the Chicago violence issue. Mrs. Obama, on the other hand, doesn’t have that kind of limited schedule or raise such expectations. While a father and daughter generally enjoy a unique bond, the words of a mother, especially a heart-broken mother, as Mrs. Obama has been described recently, can be more powerful and poignant than those of a president. The first lady did not bring a political agenda. She brought the heart-felt sympathies of a Chicago mother, who undoubtedly is tired of the killings, and like so many of us in the city, not sure what the solution is, and when it will arrive. Of course, it is just my opinion, but rather than anybody criticizing Mrs. Obama, I believe we should applaud the fact that she brought national concern, a spirit of dignity and a message no one else could deliver – not even the President. There is no doubt though, that soon the first lady’s message(s) will fade in the memories of Chicagoans. But she has moved forward the discussion on violence, and us solving our own problems. And for that we owe her a thank you. Dwight Logan

BEYOND THE RHETORIC

Kenya is at a Major Crossroads By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist It is quite easy for one to fall in love with the East African nation of Kenya. God has blessed it with great beauty. Snow top mountains, great savannahs filled with millions of wildlife creatures in their natural habitat, bustling cities like Nairobi and Mombasa and a people who are so proud of their heritage. We first started going to Kenya in 2006 and were making much progress through the Kenya Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the embassies of both our nation and Kenya. We took three trade missions that included stays at the Amboseli National Park (with a full view of Mt. Kilimanjaro) and twice at the great Massa Mara where the Great Annual Migration takes place. We were coming to terms with a Memorandum of Understanding and a Strategic Plan. Business was about to take place in an historical fashion. Then something unexpected occurred from a United States perspective. There was a national election in December, 2007. The slate of candidates worked the nation

Harry C. Alford up into an emotional and violent frenzy. What we viewed on television and through the Internet was something beautiful turning into something very ugly. Political parties turned into tribal coalitions – there are 39 distinct tribes in Kenya. The aftermath of Election Day was chaos, mayhem and violence including multiple murders. This post-election violence left over 1,200 dead and 600,000 people internally displaced. Even

members of our Kenya Chamber of Commerce went into hiding and said, “We will get back to you when things are safe.” It just broke our hearts. Kenya was no longer suitable for business. At the time of the aforementioned elections it had an economic growth rate of 7%. That went to an annual rate of 1.7% which was an all-time low for this nation, that is now 50 years old, since its independence from the English Empire. Today, that rate of growth is 4.5% but it could greatly increase depending on one thing – a smooth election this Spring. Kenya needs to show the business world that it has corrected its ways and is ready for positive business growth. The above led the international business community to reduce investment and impose sanctions on the nation. Hopefully, the leadership of Kenya has learned from the above mistake. As a result of a thorough investigation four prominent Kenyans have been charged by the International Criminal Court (AKA The Hague) for crimes against humanity for organizing the above violence. They will go on trial this April. Structurally, a lot

has changed with Kenya’s political system which hopefully will change the outcomes of future elections. In response to the disorganization after the last elections, Kenya has written and accepted a new constitution. According to the Africa Business Initiative of the International Division of the US Chamber of Commerce some of the measures include: “1. Establishment of country governments (and corresponding positions of County Governor, Civic Ward Representative, and Women County Representative). Now Kenya will be composed of 47 counties (as opposed to 8 provinces.) 2. Formation of a Senate, thus creating a bicameral legislative body (known collectively as the Parliament, which is now made up of the National Assembly and the Senate). 3. Increased women’s representation; 47 seats were added to the National Assembly for women representatives (elected from each of the counties). There are also new “gender rules” (that every governing body can be composed of no more than two-thirds of the same gender), which will be implemented progressively, starting with the

2013 election.” This appears to be a very pro-democracy change for the nation. The upcoming primary election will take place in March 2013. The second and run off round will take place in early April. The two leading coalitions running for President and Vice President are the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD). Their candidates are Raila Odinga, President, and Kalonzo Musyoka, Vice President. The other leading party is The Jubilee Coalition which has Uhuru Kenyatta running for President and William Ruto running for Vice President. Odinga is the current Prime Minister and Musyoka is the current Vice President. I have met with Prime Minister Odinga while visiting Mombasa. It is my prayer that this election and the aftermath go smoothly. But there is one conundrum. Of the four suspects indicted by the International Criminal Court two are running in the current race. Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto are accused of organizing the mayhem following the past elections and will go to (Continued on page 6)

Killing Black Teens – Literally By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist The death of Hadiya Pendleton, a 15-year-old honor student at King College Prep High School on Chicago’s South Side is finally receiving the national attention that it deserves. An honor student and majorette in her school’s marching band, Hadiya had recently participated in President Obama’s inaugural parade in the nation’s capital. After leaving school on Jan. 29, Hadiya was shot and killed in a park after she and friends sought shelter under a canopy when it began raining. She was killed about a mile from Obama’s Chicago home. Hadiya’s father, Nathaniel Pendleton, summed up his loss this way: “They took the light of my life…She was destined for great things and you stripped that from her.” First Lady Michelle Obama, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and presidential adviser Valerie Jarrett attended Hadiya’s funeral on Saturday. Her mother, Cleopatra Cowley-Pendleton, was a guest of the Obamas at Tuesday’s State of the Union address. The president is scheduled to visit Chicago on Friday where he will deliver a major address on gun violence that is certain to contain a mention of Hadiya. It’s fitting The Chicago Crusader

that Obama return to his adopted home town to make his case against deadly violence. According to statistics analyzed by the Chicago Reporter, more young people are killed in Chicago than any other city in the nation. More than 530 people under 21 years old have been killed since 2008 – most of them in Black and Brown neighborhoods – while hundreds of others have been injured. According to the newspaper, nearly 80 percent of youth homicides occur in 22 Black or Latino neighborhoods on the city’s South, Southwest and West sides, even though those communities represent only one-third of Chicago’s population.” Young people are not only the victims of gun violence – they are usually the ones who pull the trigger. “From 2008 through 2012, nearly half of Chicago’s 2,389 homicide victims were killed before their 25th birthday. In 2011, the most recent year for which the data were available, more than 56 percent of individuals who committed murder were also under 25. One-third of Chicago residents are under 25, according to 2011 Census estimates,” the Chicago Reporter states. “And despite various police strategies and community efforts, things are getting worse. Last year, 243 people under 25 were killed in Chicago.

George E. Curry That’s an 11 percent increase over 2011 and a 26 percent jump from 2010.” Chicago homicides are not limited to the youth. The Reporter also noted, “In 2012, not only did Chicago lead the nation in homicides, it witnessed nearly 100 more murders than New York City, even though the Big Apple has three times as many residents. And Chicago witnessed 215 more murders than Los Angeles – home to more than a million more people.” Because of highly-publicized mass murders – including shooting deaths at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn.; a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado; Fort Hood, Texas and Virginia Tech –

much of the gun debate has centered on reducing or eliminating access to assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. While those are laudable goals, some police chiefs have pointed out that handguns kill far more people than assault weapons. In its latest report titled, “Black Homicide Victimization in the United States: An Analysis of 2010 Homicide Data,” the Violence Policy Center reported: “For homicides in which the weapon used could be identified, 83 percent of Black victims (5,073 out of 6,149) were shot and killed with guns. Of these, 72 percent (3,658 victims) were killed with handguns. There were 617 victims killed with knives or other cutting instruments, 219 victims killed by bodily force, and 162 victims killed by a blunt object.” Overall, Blacks are more than six times more likely to be homicide victims than Whites. Citing FBI crime reports, the Violence Policy Center observed, “…In 2010 there were 6,469 Black homicide victims in the United States. The homicide rate among Black victims in the United States was 16.32 per 100,000. For that year, the overall national homicide rate was 4.42 per 100,000. For whites, the national homicide rate was 2.66 per 100,000.” In addition to the need to address handgun violence, President ObaSaturday, February 16, 2013

ma, Congress and law enforcement officials should acknowledge that violence is a serious problem and more often than not, the victim knew or had a relationship with the person who killed them. “For homicides in which the victim to offender relationship could be identified, 70 percent of Black victims (2,146 out of 3,058) were murdered by someone they knew. Nine hundred twelve victims were killed by strangers,” the Violence Policy Center report stated. If this country is serious about curbing murders, it must focus on tragic deaths, such as the murder of Hadiya Pendleton and 20 young kids in Newtown, Conn. But it must also deal with handguns and the murder of people who have or have had a relationship with their killer. Otherwise, all the tough talk on reducing violence is empty rhetoric. George E. COMMENTARY

Worrill’s World By Dr. Conrad W. Worrill

THE WHITE SUPREMACY SYSTEM (Dr. Conrad Worrill, National Chairman Emeritus of the National Black United Front (NBUF), located at 1809 East 71st Street, Suite 211, Chicago, Illinois, 60649, 773-493-0900, Fax# 773-493-9819, E-mail: nbufchic@sbcglobal.net, Web site: nbufront.org)

Dr. Conrad Worrill How many times have you heard someone of African ancestry say that “We [Black people] are our own worst enemy?” If you have lived among African people in this country for any length of time, I am sure you

have heard this remark made many times. Unfortunately, the system of white supremacy developed in the western world, has caused far too many African people in America to believe that the problem we face as a people is “us.” We must remind ourselves, time and time again, that African people in America were captured from Africa and brought to America against our will. As the “1974 Black Capital” article asserted, “Our introduction to the West was in the form of a commodity raped from Africa to be used as labor, capital, chattel, and currency to build a nation for someone else.” In the article, it explained that “. . . our history tells us that we were below slaves and less than human. We were things who were traded for horses, our women used as breeders and our children raised like chickens.” Finally, the “Black Capital” article pointed out that during the slavery process— “The level of our existence was based upon the skill and the will of those who owned us. They had the right to deem that which was best for their property. Therefore, the profit motive and the skill of the slave master determined how this Black wealth would bring the highest return on his investment.” This formula is still at work today. Just examine the role of African peo-

ple in the entertainment and athletic industry. White people own and control these industries and use African people to “bring the highest return off their investment.” If African people are going to ever have a serious mental breakthrough in terms of how we analyze our condition in America, we will have to resolve the question “are we our own worst enemy,” or has the system of white supremacy created a set of conditions that continue to keep us in an oppressed state? We must accept responsibility for answering this question as well as accepting responsibility for solving all the problems we face as a people. But in accepting responsibility for addressing the problems we face as an African people in America, we must have a framework out of which to properly conceptualize our problems. In 1852, the great African thinker in America, Dr. Martin R. Delany, wrote one of the most important books that accurately described our condition at that moment in history that is still applicable to our condition today. The title of the book is The Condition, Elevation, Emigration and Destiny of the Colored People of the United States. Delany wrote, “Unfortunately for us as a body, we have been taught to believe that we must have some per-

son to think for us, instead of thinking for ourselves. So accustomed are we to submission and this kind of training, that it is with difficulty, even among the most intelligent of the colored people, an audience may be elicited for any purpose whatever, if the expounder is to be colored. . .” Further Delany wrote, “and the introduction of a subject is treated with indifference, if not contempt, when the originator is a colored person. Indeed, the most ordinary white person, is almost revered while the most qualified colored person is totally neglected, nothing from them is appreciated.” In resolving the question of whether “we are our own worst enemy,” we should reflect that for over three hundred years white people openly discussed African people as a problem (1600 - 1900). Today they still discuss us as a problem but the language is coded differently. As Dr. Anderson Thompson has written on the discussions that white people have had on what they have historically called “the Negro Problem.” “There is a duality in the story of western white man and his culture, which, paradoxically, is thrown into sharp relief wherever the Black man appears (or is dropped) on the scene.” Dr. Thompson says, “Whenever or wherever the white man exists in

proximity to the Blacks the Negro Question appears.” The idea of the “Negro Question” is discussed further when Dr. Thompson writes, “The Negro Question in Western society has been a perennial subject of endless international debates, actions, decisions, wars, riots, lynchings— all of which flow out a recurring western dialogue: a conversation (for Europeans only) which for a long time took place between white men over what should be done with, about or to the Blacks they found in their captured territories.” Concluding on this point, Dr. Thompson informs us “The International Negro Question, or Nigger Question has, for the most part, been an integral part of European Civilization. Wherever in the world there existed. Europeans in proximity to the African, inevitably the question arose as to how (not why, I nor whether) the Black man should be exploited or should be eliminated.” We are not our own worst enemy— even though some African people in this country behave in manners that are not in our best interest. What we must continue to do is to understand this negative African behavior and assume responsibility for changing it. The enemy and problem is white supremacy and its continued impact on us.

Whole Foods and Whole Fools There is a Whole Foods store about three blocks from my home, and around the corner from my gym. I am enamored by the displays of produce, the red peppers contrasting the yellow ones, the kale, chard, and collard glistening from their morning sprinkle. I love the way the fish gleams back at you, char and salmon, swordfish and tilapia. When I walk over to the prepared food, I grin at the ways the veggies are layered with cheese, crumbs, and so much more. They have sandwiches that I identify with, ingredients that I salivate about. And now I must declare that I would rather drink muddy water or sleep in a hollow log than to indulge in whole foods. I am utterly appalled that Whole Foods CEO John Mackey described Obamacare as “fascism.” Fascism is an incendiary word that speaks totalitarianism, or dictatorship, and it describes it in a pejorative way. Whatever dissent there may be about Obamacare, the fact is, enough members of Congress voted for it to make it a law. John

Mackey, what were you thinking when you called Obamacare (a term I proudly embrace) totalitarian and fascist? Is President Obama so mesmerizing that he forced opposing members of Congress to vote for his plan? I had mixed feelings when the store also known as Whole Paycheck swooped into my neighborhood. People earn less hourly than the price of a pound of cheese.

Most folks, though, were happy to have jobs. Happy, that is, until they complained about the terms and conditions of their work. I really didn’t pay much attention, but there was a niggling sense that something was wrong Some of the workers grumbled outside the store. If you asked if they could help you, they were emphatically negative. I can understand folks preferring to keep their jobs than to put it out there for justice. But from the swing of the head, the cut of the eye, it was clear that all has not been good at Whole Paycheck. Unease translated into disease for me. How dare John Mackey decide to flip his lip without a script to describe national health care as “fascism?” He seems to be trying to start a fight, to diminish a president, to ignore that vote of Congress, to put President Obama in a context that he does not deserve to be in. Fascism? One dictionary describes fascism as “a right wing nationalist ideology or movement with an hierarchical structure that is opposed to democracy and liberalism.” How did President Obama get in

this mix? CEO John Mackey, unsupportive of Obamacare (as many business leaders are) chose to take opposition to another level, and decided that “fascism” was a great way to frame his ire. Then he said it didn’t matter, that his word choice was careless, that his ignorance would not affect his corporate profit, that he simply misspoke. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said to support evil is to embrace evil, is to be evil. This is an evil I can gleefully walk away from. Mackey says that it doesn’t matter that conscious people won’t support his store. He may have a point. But I’m gong to take my little $200 a week elsewhere and I

know others who will do the same thing. John Mackey, your words have been duly noted. If my words are irrelevant, keep shopping at Whole Paycheck and supporting oppression. If you agree with me, send John Mackey a note via Libba.Letton@wholefood.com or Kate.Lowery@wholefoods.com. To use a term like “fascism” in the context of public policy is ugly and unacceptable. To cooperate is to be complicit. Julianne Malveaux is a Washington, D.C.-based economist and writer. She is President Emerita of Bennett College for Women in Greensboro, N.C.

Mount Carmel Students Caravan for Life A group of pro-life Mount Carmel students traveled across the country to Washington, DC recently to participate in the annual March for Life Rally. Mount Carmel students joined more than 500,000 other people in sections of the National Mall on January 25 to protest the 40th anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision to legalize abortion. Theology faculty member and service program coordinator Mr. Kevin Hansen, and parent volunteer Gina Mirabelli, led the group of students to Washington. Mount Carmel students who participated in the March for Life are: Dan Breakey, of Chicago (Beverly); Kevin Breakey, of Chi- cago (Beverly); Marcus Camp- bell, of Olympia Fields; Patrick Fishcer, of Chicago (Beverly); Darren Hall, of Steger, Nick Holloway, of Blue Island; Andrew Jacobs, of LaGrange; Brendan Jacobs, of LaGrange; Thomas Jones, of Joliet; Jon Koranda, of Homewood; Adam Lewandowski, of Whiting, IN; Gabriel Lupa, of Chicago (Beverly); Michael Lupa, of Chicago (Beverly); Jacob Marzo, of LaGrange Park; Zac Mirabelli, of Hegwisch; Dan O’Keefe, of Downers Grove; Ryan Ruff, of Chicago (Beverly); Dan Sanchez, of Dyer, IN; Matthew Schau, of Highland, IN; and Vince Zarate,

of Tinley Park. On their way to the rally, the Mount Carmel students also stopped at Whitefriars Hall, a Carmelite house of formation. March for Life participants ranged from individuals to large groups of churches and non-profits. “I wanted to attend because I wanted to represent all the teens in Chicago, and at Mount

Carmel who share my prolife beliefs and want to end abortion,” said junior Dan O’Keefe. For all the Mount Carmel students who attended, the March for Life wasn’t just an opportunity to rally for their beliefs, it was an opportunity to learn and grow. “Attending the rally was very powerful and strengthened

my pro-life views,” noted junior Andrew Jacobs. “The experience was absolutely life-changing,” said junior Marcus Campbell. “I learned so much about the value of life, for unborn children and for all people. It really brought me closer to God.”

For O’Keefe, who returned to the rally for a second time after an inaugural trip in 2012, the experience was an educational one that gave him more information on a topic he already strongly believed in. “Now,” he said, “ I feel that I have the knowledge to become more of an activist among my peers on these issues.”

ENTERTAINMENT

The NEW Four-One-One By Raymond Ward Entertainment Editor THE 55th ANNUAL GRAMMY AWARDS: Last Sunday, The Grammy's were presented during a much-too long three and a half hour telecast on CBS-TV. Viewers had to endure a boring Taylor Swift ( I just don't understand what people see in her ), Alicia Keyes ( I really really really like her, but, if she sings "This Girl Is on Fire" one more time I'm going to set her on fire ), and Justin Timberlake ( and ya'll know I've had NO USE for him ever since he threw Janet Jackson “under the bus” after that Super Bowl performance of theirs years ago. He's a little punk azz bytch!). But, at least one of the highlights was watching home-town Diva, Mavis Staples as she participated in one of the musical tributes. Mavis always "brings it!" The telecast was a bit "off" and Chicago's own nominees had an

Lupe Fiasco “off" night and failed to bring home the GOLD. R. Kelly, Kathy Griffin, Shemika Copeland, Lupe Fiasco, Donald Lawrence, Kurt Elling and even First Lady Michelle Obama failed to win the Grammy in the category for which they were nominated. ENTERTAINMENT: CHICAGO STYLE By Elaine Hegwood Bowen, MSJ

Yelling to the Sky By Elaine Hegwood Bowen Yelling to the Sky is a bad girl movie that brings together two biracial sisters, one of whom catches hell at home from her white father and also at school, as she is bullied on a daily basis. Their mother, played by Yolonda Ross, is also verbally and physically abused by the father played by Jason Clarke. Zoe Kravitz plays 17-year-old Sweetness O’Hara, who finally learns that she must make a way for herself, because her parents are not able to or are not interested in helping her survive her final teen years. I first saw Yelling to the Sky at a local film festival last summer, and I was intrigued because Gabourey Sidibe of Precious fame was one of the lead girl bullies at the school. Antonique Smith plays the older sister, Ola, who has a baby and seems to be in a fractured relationship with her boyfriend. Yelling to the Sky could tell the story of young girls going to high school anywhere in the country—they are always looking to fit in. But in the case of Sweetness, she only seems at home at the house of a local drug dealer, played by Tariq Trotter. In the opening scenes, a pregnant Ola defends Sweetness against a

bunch of teens who are bent on relieving her of her bicycle. It doesn’t matter to Ola that she is pregnant; she is just concentrating on beating the daylights out of a young man who was the main antagonist. Admittedly, the girls don’t have

the mother just leaves after being abused by the father. She eventually returns but seems really detached from all that is happening in the household. It was kind of weird to see Clarke, of The Wire and Zero Dark Thirty fame, playing an abusive husband and fa-

ther. Sidibe as one of the bullies finally gets what is due her, when Sweetness gets some gall and courage and jumps her at school. This courage, however, comes from her selling drugs, shoplifting and hanging out with two of the girls who at one time were her enemies. Only a few symbols of normalcy exist within the household, as the mother dotes on the baby and prepares breakfast one morning. The father even buys the newborn a toy and brings home groceries. A round of handball with the drug dealer ends up with him being ambushed and murdered on the spot. At the end, everything still doesn’t seem to be wrapped in a pretty bow, but the father seems more loving and determined to pay attention to Sweetness and her surroundings. The title seems telling: Yelling to the Sky is exactly what Sweetness appears to be doing in the end, as she crumbles into her father’s chest trying to find herself, while assuring herself that his presence will stick this time. Yelling to the Sky is available on Blu-ray and DVD. Check out your local movie rental outlet for more details. The Chicago Crusader

ENTERTAINMENT ICE Theaters announces Truth B Told film series lineup for Black History Month Celebrating Unsung Black Films and Filmmakers The art of storytelling for Blacks has its roots with Illinoisan and independent cinema pioneer Oscar Micheaux, who was the first African American to produce a featurelength film (The Homesteader) in 1919. At 17 years old, Micheaux moved to Chicago and went on to make more than 30 films over the next three decades. Since that time, the number of Black filmmakers and directors has risen exponentially. Today, Black directors are in demand and at the helm of some of the top blockbuster and independent films, including: Spike Lee (Inside Man), John Sin-

Bill Duke gleton (Four Brothers), Hughes Brothers (The Book of Eli), Denzel Washington (American Gangster), Melvin Van Peebles (Baadasssss!), Malcolm D. Lee (The Best Man), F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job), Steve

Suzanne de Passe McQueen (Shame), Kasi Lemmons (Silence of the Lambs), Dee Rees (Pariah), Robert Townsend (The Five Heartbeats), Suzanne de Passe, Lee Daniels (Precious), Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball), Bill Duke (Not Easily Broken), Charles Burnett (Killer of Sheep), Michael Schultz (The Last Dragon), Ernest Dickerson (Bulletproof), Carl Franklin (Out of Time), Mario Van Peebles (Ali), Bill Duke (Hoodlum), and the list goes on. ICE Theaters pays tribute to Black filmmakers and directors with Truth B Told, its annual Black History Month film series. The four-week program is a showcase of seldom seen classics and new Indie films from around the world. Truth B Told presents films by filmmakers who bring stories with compelling content and a human dimension seldom presented in mainstream

the universe until a fierce storm changes her reality. In person: WVON personalities. The Wiz 35th Anniversary SingA-Long (Feb. 27) – An urbanized retelling of L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz featuring an entirely African-American cast. The Wiz was adapted from the 1975 Broadway musical of the same name. FINALLY COMING HOME

The Chicago Crusader

Word came this week that Presi-

dent Barack Obama will finally come home after even the daily press called for his presence. Maybe that’s why he is coming. It ain’t just US that said it now. The question is why did it take so long? When the shooting in Arizona, where Congresswoman Giffords was gravely injured, he rushed to comfort her and her family; he couldn’t get to the hospital beds of the victims of the movie theatre victims in Aurora, Colorado fast enough; and he shed tears enroute to Newtown, Connecticut and embraced the parents of the 20 children and 6 adults when they were felled by a deranged shooter. Now Ima ain’t criticizing the President for these actions, they were the right thing to do, but what about the hundreds of families here in Chicago that have made the lonely trek to cemeteries to bury their young people? Why did it take him so long? I know most of them were single murders, not mul-

tiple as in the other cases, but the numbers put together is BIG!!! Maybe, just maybe it is advantageous for him to come now. After all he’s decided to take the case for gun control to the people and the murder capital of young people is right here in his hometown. I guess it suddenly makes sense to him and the advisers of the other hue that he has surrounded himself. I hope that all of us know that the murders will not magically stop after he makes his brief stop here, but it symbolizes that he has not forgotten about this grieving city and he can perhaps console his good friend Rahm, who is twisting in the wind trying to find a solution to the problem. But the delay is symptomatic of a bigger problem. I thought it was generally understood in the hood and everywhere that you take care of home first and then spread abroad. In this case, home is the last to hear from the President about our young peoSaturday, February 16, 2013

ple. Perhaps word reached the White House that it was just gangbangers that were being killed, which ain’t true. Perhaps the emotional attachment of it being an honor roll student and to boot had marched in his inaugural parade just a few weeks back that made a difference. But this is not the first innocent victim and I am sure it is not the first time the victim was an honor roll student. But the growing numbers of young people here killed and not even a mention seems uncaring Mr. President. Maybe someone told him that!! Ima believes that it will play better to the people that he really wants to do something about gun control, although just a few short months ago it was not even mentioned when he campaigned to be re-elected. Why now??? I guess Ima will have to settle for the fact that it is politically the right thing to do. Lawd, have mercy!!! 13

Lyric Opera of Chicago’s Fantasy of the Opera Gala raises more than $450,000 Wagner’s ‘Die Meistersinger’ opened the night before for performances through March 3 The Civic Opera House was transformed into 1920s Paris, complete with the Eiffel Tower, the Moulin Rouge nightclub, and classic boulevard signs (environmental design by Event Creative). This set the scene for “Midnight in Paris,” the 29th annual Fantasy of the Opera Gala benefit hosted by Lyric Opera of Chicago’s Guild Board of Directors on Saturday, February 9. The gala benefit was attended by 700 patrons and their guests and raised more than $450,000 net for the opera company. In keeping with the theme, guests arrived in “1920s Paris chic/black tie” attire. Early in the evening, an array of tastings prepared by some of Chicago’s top chefs enticed the ticket-holders for the fundraiser. Restaurant stations were spaced throughout the Rice Grand Foyer and American Airlines Mezzanine – a.k.a. “The Streets of Paris” for the evening. Guests enjoyed Veuve Clicquot Champagne, “Oo la la!” highballs (Grand Marnier, cranberry juice, seltzer, and lime), and other refreshments while they purchased

raffle tickets or placed silent-auction bids. (Guests bid electronically using their personal communication devices.) Additional diversions included can-can dancers, henna tattoos, tarot-card readings, jugglers, mimes, and a photo booth. The Fantasy Cabaret performance in the Ardis Krainik Theatre began shortly after 8:00 pm and featured stars of Lyric’s current season. Lyric’s music director Sir Andrew Davis served as Master of Ceremonies. Jamie Barton (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), David Cangelosi (Die Meistersinger), Elizabeth Futral (La bohème), Amanda Majeski (Die Meistersinger), Ana María Martínez (La bohème), Lucas Meachem (La bohème), Albina Shagimuratova (Rigoletto), and Andrea Silvestrelli (La bohème, Die Meistersinger), performed selections mostly from the great American songbook and Broadway classics. Pianist Valerie Maze accompanied the singers. Following the cabaret, gala sponsors and VIP ticketholders enjoyed a seated dinner prepared by Limelight Catering, while other guests flocked to “The Streets of Paris” and danced with wild abandon till midnight to Ren-

The dance-floor never thinned, and La bohème baritone Lucas Meachem brought down the house when he spontaneously joined the band for a brilliant rendition of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Many guests cooled their heels by visiting the lower-level Opera Club, a.k.a. the Moulin Rouge, to enjoy Veuve Clicquot and Grand Marnier cocktails, specialty cof-

fees, and liqueurs. Wagner’s marathon-length comic opera “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” had its grand opening performance at 5:30 pm the night before “Fantasy” much to the delight of Lyric audiences and Wagner enthusiasts. leading the monumental cast of singers, dancers and actors, the outstanding Lyric Opera Chorus (superbly prepared by guest chorus master Ian Robertson) whether as devout churchgoers, townspeople, polite citizens or riot-provoking rowdies, and the magnificent Lyric Opera Orchestra led by Lyric’s ever-effervescent Music Director Sir Andrew Davis, the five and one-half hour performance (with two half-hour intermissions and box lunches available for purchase at the first intermission) fairly flew by and had the audience humming Walther’s prize-winning song as they headed for the exits and into the cold night air. “Die Meistersinger” is highly recommended. Performances continue through Sunday, March 3. For tickets, call the Box Office at 312-332-2244.

SPIRITUAL SPEAKING

Can minister’s song end the violence? Held 233 funerals last year By Chinta Strausberg By focusing on the violence in a musical way that youth understand, the Rev. Donald Smith, pastor of the Holy Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, hopes his song, “Speak UP,” will generate awareness and courage to the Black community that all too often honors the “Code of Silence” as if it were a badge of honor while giving killers a protective shield to kill again. Having held 233 funerals last year, Smith, whose church is at 1458 W. 115th Street in Chicago, said he hopes the “Speak Up” mes-

sage “will resonate with everyone” and that the “code of silence” will be forever broken not just in the African American community but citywide. Referring to the violence, Smith, who is a member of Pastors United for Change, said, ‘I have been praying for a solution. I did more than 233 funerals last year. The majority of the funerals I did was usually gang-related due to the senseless violence in our community.” He recalled one Sunday on his way home from church, about seven people had been shot that weekend. “It disturbed me. I knew why they were doing this. These young punks who want to shoot. They don’t want to fight.

Rev. Donald Smith They want to shoot because they’re cowards. They hide behind the guns.” Referring to the “code of silence” many youth honor when a crime has been committed, Smith said, “They try to scare the people who know what they’ve done and know who they are. They

scare them…saying ‘you tell, snitches get stitches,” or ‘snitches end up in ditches.’ “They put fear in the community that is letting this violence to continue, to rise,” he said explaining that is why he wrote the song, “Speak Up, Everyone.” “We need to flip the switches and begin to put the heat on the bad people, and when that begins to happen, they’ll come to the conclusion they can’t do anything because these people will tell. If he doesn’t want to go to jail, he will do one or two things, either he’ll stop doing these things that cause attention from the police or he’ll move it somewhere else,” said Smith. “That is what I believe will

help us begin to see some results of our prayers and our being able to cooperate with each other and bring awareness to this senseless violence that is going on in our community. We all do care.” Saying it’s time to “drop egos,” Smith said, “These are our children who are dying senselessly in the street. I am literally trying to preach myself out of a job. I would have loved to have done ten funerals this year of elderly people who died of old age.” Smith added that he doesn’t expect them to control the Black community. “It is our job to control our community. We did it before, and we can do it again.” Smith wants to use portions of his record, which he

Granderson’s donation will help inner-city baseball programs New stadium on near West Side to be used by UIC along with youth leagues By J. Coyden Palmer New York Yankees outfielder and Chicago area native Curtis Granderson will have the new baseball stadium at the University of Illinois-Chicago named after him after he made a significant financial donation to his alma mater. The new stadium will also be a partnership with the Chicago Public League, Major League Baseball’s Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) and Urban Youth Academy (UYA). The stadium will host youth league games and clinics throughout the spring and summer in hopes of getting more African Americans interested in the sport, which has seen its number of Black major league players

wane over the past decade. “There are a lot of people in the community that are in the same situation I was in 15 to 20 years ago,” Granderson said in a statement. “Now, I am in a position where I have the ability to help kids pursue whatever dreams they have, whether they are educational, athletic or just life in general. I’m grateful that I have the opportunity to team up with UIC, which has helped me get to where I am today.” Throughout his career, Granderson has consistently been a generous benefactor to charities. He has also served as an ambassador for the sport of baseball having traveled overseas to represent Major League Baseball in goodwill games. Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

(Continued from page 4) In my opinion, she was among the best congressional representatives to come out of Illinois. She was one of those people who always made you feel like she was a friend – a long time friend. Mrs. Collins never bragged about the chairmanships or other promotions she got in the House of Representatives. If you wanted to know that kind of thing, you were more likely to read it in the newspaper than hear it from her. I think that is demonstrated by the fact that until her death I had no idea she was the longest serving Black woman in Congress. We have heard more about others. I don’t know why after she left

Congress that there wasn’t more information about what she was doing, or some celebration about the fact she had served. Year-after-year we have observed Black History Month, but how often have we made sure Cardiss Collins was lifted up during that time? If for nothing else, Mrs. Collins should be recognized for her lasting contribution to women’s college sports. When she pushed the NCAA to make women’s sports funding and access more equitable, it set the tone for the level of participation we have today. Were it not for Mrs. Collins, there would be a lot of female athletes we never heard of. I wonSaturday, February 16, 2013

der if we would have the WNBA if Mrs. Collins had not worked tirelessly like she did to have women involved. Cardiss Collins was a role model before there was such a phrase. It would be wonderful, and bittersweet at the same time, if one of the many Black documentary filmmakers here would decide to develop a movie about her life, accomplishments and the kind of women she was. Cardiss Collins could serve as someone Black girls across the country can emulate. Even at the age of 81, she has left us too soon. Cyril Brock 19
