Rauner’s budget assaults the most vulnerable Mixed reactions were heard after Governor Bruce Rauner presented his budget address on Wednesday (February 18). The Chicago Tribune, Conservatives and Republicans were generous in heaping praise
on the Governor, while liberals and state legislators that represent districts comprised of Blacks and other minorities were highly critical of the drastic reductions he proposed.
Governor Rauner said “We must institute major reforms, or whatever balanced budget we craft this year will be undone in the years ahead by the special interests that make their money from the government
GOVERNOR BRUCE RAUNER delivered his first budget proposal recently to the Illinois General Assembly, which contained over $6 billion in cuts to the state pension, health care for the poor, education, transportation and reduced pension benefits.
and pay politicians to spend more. We must eliminate conflicts of interest in state government and end our broken system. “These reforms won’t be easy. Decades of special interest laws will be difficult to undo. But to be compassionate, we must be competitive. And that means having the political courage to put the people’s interests first and the special interests last,” he said. “The plan the governor presented today is an assault, unprecedented in recent memory, on the working poor, the middle class and the most vulnerable members of our society. There is no shared sacrifice here; I heard no proposals for closing corporate loopholes or ensuring the wealthy pay their fair share,” said State Senator Jacqueline Y. Collins (D-Chicago 16th). “Despite his promise to make Illinois more competitive and compassionate, the governor advocates for cuts that would decimate the ability of youth and others in our most underprivileged communities to compete. Meanwhile, compassion is conspicuously absent from this budget, which would eliminate breast and cervical cancer coverage for women making as little as $15,600, end respite care for families of children with developmental disabilities and further reduce already inadequate services for wards of the state, Collins continued “Our young people — including those emerging from the most difficult of circumstances — possess within them the po(Continued on page 7)

Mark Walter, Johnson’s business partner, said they decided to expand the program after evaluating how successful it has been. He said the organization has always recognized the need, but was not sure if the program would work until it was put into action. According to the organization’s website, each year they have more applicants than job openings. “I think the sheer demand shows how much this program is needed,” Walter said. “The fact that it works increases the demand even more. Pfleger received hundreds of hate mail for supporting JRW ‘Call me what you want’ but the fight’s on By Chinta Strausberg Father Michael L. Pfleger last Sunday revealed he has received hundreds of calls and e-mails calling him an “N” lover for demanding that the Little League International Baseball and Softball Headquarters restore the Jackie Robinson West (JRW) 2014 Great Lakes Regional and US Champions trophy. Pfleger made his remarks during his Sunday sermon. Calling what the Little League’s did to the JRW team a “disgrace” and said it was “disrespectful.” “It has been so disgraceful the way they handled these children. They never received one word in writing to this day. They have not yet been told what their accusations are. You can’t rebut what you don’t know. They never knew what they had been disqualified for…. “They never had the decency to let them know first. They told ESPN before they told the families, the coaches or the Haley family; so the children heard about it on their way to school from the radio,” Pfleger said. Over the weekend, Pfleger joined Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. in fighting to get JRW’s title restored, but it has come with a price for Pfleger. “I think racism is rooted in this” as evidence of the hate mail he has received. “They called me a ‘rigger.’ I’ve
been called so many things in the last week I had to go to look at my ID to make sure who I was because I was called so many different names this past week,” Pfleger told his members. “We’re fighting the governor. We’re fighting the Little League. We’re fighting everybody, but I can care less. Call me what you want to call me because we’re going to stand up for these children. “We refuse to allow them to go with the double standard,” he said. Pfleger said many people from across the nation told him “that no other league in the country is held to the standard that JRW is being held to in Chicago. “You are going to have equal standards, equal playing field and judge everybody equally. “Unless you investigate every team the same way and make sure that there is nobody out there you call boundaries, don’t you treat our children that way and call our children ‘cheaters.’” No, you ain’t going to do that,” Pfleger said. “Maybe the New England Patriots should turn back the Super Bowls since they ain’t done anything with the deflated all yet. Turn the Super Bowl back in. Maybe we should take everybody out of the Hall of Fame, and everybody who ever won a World Series, or anyone who won anything in any sports event before there were integrated sports because there were unfair boundaries of racism and prejudice that have been

Illinois Governor goes after workers By Jesse L. Jackson NNPA Columnist In November, Illinois voters narrowly decided – after one of the most expensive gubernatorial elections in the nation’s history – to elect Bruce Rauner, a hedge fund billionaire, to lead the state. Consider it an experiment in class politics. How would a man of the 0.01 percent address Illinois’ many challenges? Rauner donned populist garb for the campaign. Pumping some $27.5 million of his own money into the campaign, he promised voters what he knew they
wanted: “We’ll get a booming economy with more jobs. We’ll get the best schools in America. We’ll bring down the tax burden. And we’re going to rip this patronage system, and this cronyism system out of Springfield.” Voters wanted someone who would clean up the corruption. Rauner was an uneasy choice, partly because his hedge fund was a leading investor of Illinois’ pension funds, a line of business infamous for corruption and ripoffs. And partly because the promises didn’t add up: better schools, better infrastructure, less debt, and lower taxes – how does that work? But enough vot-
ers decided to take the risk. So what is Rauner’s first act? He declared war on Illinois’ public unions. His State of the State address blamed unions for Illinois’ problems. Public employees had the nerve to negotiate for decent pay and pensions. Their retirees expected that the contractual promises to pay the compensation would be honored. Their unions contributed volunteers and money to political campaigns. They were bankrupting the state. So Rauner urged localities to pass socalled “right to work” laws that would disembowel unions. Then he issued
ON THEIR OWN, the youth of Saint Sabina recently held a press conference calling on Gov. Bruce Rauner to release their approved after school, anti-violence and day care funds. Here, they were praying for the release of their funds. They were joined by Henry English, president/CEO, Black United Fund, and Father Michael L. Pfleger, who urged the public to call Gov. Rauner’s office at: 312.814.2121 or his Springfield office at 217.782.0244. (All photos by Chinta Strausberg) 2

an executive order – declared illegal by the Illinois Attorney General – to weaken state unions by barring them from assessing fees on some of the workers they represent –and benefit – in collective bargaining. In a unionized workplace, union negotiated wages and benefits apply to workers who aren’t members of the union. Non-members – about 15 percent of the unionized workplaces – don’t have to pay union dues or support union political activities. But under Illinois law, they pay a fair-share fee, to cover the cost of collective bargaining and enforcement from which they directly benefit. Fair share fees don’t contribute to Illinois fiscal problems. Rauner is waging a war on unions. He hopes to cripple those who opposed him in his last election. But the stakes are larger than that: what Rauner is proposing is to inflict trickle down economics on Illinois. We haven’t seen Rauner’s budget yet, but we know what is coming. Income taxes will be lowered on the rich; sales taxes extended on working people, making Illinois’ already regressive state tax structure even more unfair. Rauner has already frozen all “nonessential” state spending and hiring, with an exemption, apparently, for a $100,000 a year chief of staff for his spouse. The war on public workers will be accompanied by a continued assault
Blacks Must control their own coMMunity
on public schools. The piecemeal privatization of public education will be accompanied by piecemeal privatization of more public services. Rauner has already teed up Medicaid – health services for the impoverished – for cuts. Pension funds imbalances – caused by irresponsible officials refusing to make promised contributions and by hedge fund geniuses pocketing big fees for paltry returns – will be corrected by breaking the contractual promise to retirees. Rauner clearly would lower the minimum wage if he could. Rauner will peddle this toxic potion as a charm for Illinois’ ills. Austerity, he’ll argue, will unleash jobs and growth. Breaking unions will balance budgets. Charters will lift kids. Medicaid cuts will focus on the unworthy. Everyone will sacrifice; everyone will benefit. But the reality is predictable – as Wisconsin and Kansas have discovered. The wealthy – a leading source of the corruption that plagues Illinois – will get tax breaks. The middle class will get paycuts. The poor will get less help. The schools will be cut; good teachers will leave. Illinois voters were sensible enough not to give Rauner a free rein: Democrats still control the legislature. Rauner is making it clear where he stands. Now Democrats will have to decide which side they are on. www.chicagocrusader.com

CRUSADER ENDORSEMENTS We urge all of our readers to go to the polls on Tuesday and cast their vote for the candidates of their choice. Voting still remains one of the rights that we must continue to be vigilant in ensuring that this right is not compromised. Voter suppression remains today, although we have had Supreme Court enforced laws to protect that right. There are some among us that feel that we no longer need laws to protect that right, but when we see the new tricks that come into play we know there is the need. There’s no more poll taxes, but we see voter ID laws that are too often instituted to suppress our vote and other voter suppression laws emerge to discourage the voter from exercising their franchise. We find that political campaigns have become something we believe it was never intended to be. Whoever spends the most money in all likelihood wins the elective offices. No longer is it the best candidate, no longer does that candidate tell us why he is the best candidate, but instead attack their opponents with dirt dug up to discredit one another. And the person who has the most money spends that money on television ads. It’s a good time economically for television stations and networks. Is this what we have become? Where is it leading us to?

He is smart and promises to serve his ward better in a second term. 5th Ward – Leslie Hairston fights for her ward and we feel she should be reelected to continue her work to provide needed services. 6th Ward – Roderick Sawyer understands his job and is known to stand independent of the city’s leadership when needed.
The Crusader finds itself in a situation that it has never been in before in this municipal election. This campaign finds us (The Crusader) for the first time in our 75 year history without a choice for Mayor. We will not recommend any candidate for the office of the Mayor of the city of Chicago.

7th Ward – Keianna Barrett is a new on the political scene and brings a new kind of energy to the job.
Where will we end up?
17th Ward – David Moore is a fresh face with good ideas for the 17th ward. We think he will do a good job. Cast your vote for him.
9th Ward – Anthony Beale has a lot going on in the 9th ward. He has brought new businesses and the promise of the historical Pullman District in his ward should bring new life to the area. He deserves to be re-elected. 16th Ward – Toni Foulkes found herself without a ward when the new map was produced, but she should be able to step in and provide the needed leadership for the 16th ward.
34th Ward – Carrie Austin has given leadership for many years in this ward. She has been successful in bringing many industries to the ward and been instrumental in providing the leadership for the improvement of Roseland Hospital. We recommend her re-election. 37th Ward – Emma Mitts does not always rub everyone with a smooth touch, but no one can deny she is dedicated to improving her ward.

EDITORIAL WHY YOUR VOTE COUNTS Just imagine for one-minute one million people saying “My vote doesn’t count!” In such a situation, we are looking at people who are actually saying “I relinquish my control over what happens politically in my life.” In other words, they are self-sabotaging. Another refrain that is often heard is “I’m just not into politics!” Well, you may not be into politics, but politics is into you it impacts your entire life to a certain extent by controlling federal, state, county and municipal public dollars that end up in your community. Elected officials serve as your surrogates when it comes to your quality of life because they represent you in the halls of power. They vote on taxation, wage guidelines, environmental issues and a whole host of things that can influence your personal existence. Politics even impacts religion, which is another thing that people use to circumvent their civic responsibility. “The Lord will take care of me, so I don’t need to get involved in politics.” But if you notice, more and more politicians are visiting churches in an attempt to influence political souls. And in the African American community, many ministers become heavily involved in politics. They have run for offices as high as the presidency of the United States. The Black clergy is legendary for backing politicians and political issues. Basically you can’t escape the political domain, even if you place your head in the proverbial sand. The 15th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution gave Blacks the right to vote, but since then, three major trends have emerged. First, you have whites trying their best to sabotage the Black vote. The movie Selma, which chronicled voter suppression during the civil rights era, depicts this situation very well. Today there are still efforts to thwart the voting rights of African Americans by utilizing various political tricks, especially at polling places. The second trend that has emerged is the voluntary relinquishing of the right to vote by many Black people with the excuse that their vote doesn’t count, as mentioned earlier. The last trend that is evident is that of Black people who are using their voting power to influence the political landscape. These people have elected presidents, congressmen, mayors and other public servants by recognizing the leverage that they have. They understand the power of the vote. Unfortunately, too many African Americans prefer to use one excuse or another, and therefore place their futures and those of their progeny in the hands of others. And, actually, not voting is voting! Whenever someone refuses to vote, it is a vote for the opposition. So it makes perfect sense to take a proactive stance and vote for what you want. Recently on a popular Black radio program, a caller was told that Blacks made up the biggest voting bloc in his city. Yet, even though he was told this, he insisted that “they” (white people) would not allow certain things that would benefit the Black community to happen. He did not connect the dots; he didn’t understand that the issues they were discussing could be positively influenced by Black voting power. Lastly, if voting did not matter, there would not be such a great effort to keep people from doing it! Bottom line - you need to vote so that you can wield the power that every American can have (unless you’re a convicted felon in some states). The ballot is the great equalizer - we all have only one, no matter how much money we possess. Though the rich and powerful can use dollars to influence people to vote a certain way, the choice is still ours to use it as we will. Vote - the quality of your life in America depends upon it! 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR No cameras then what? Dear Editor: I have been watching and listening to this guy Mark Wallace on WVON talk about getting rid of the red light cameras and speed cameras in our neighborhoods. The amount of research that he has obviously put into the issue is somewhat impressive. I say somewhat because his crusade creates a bigger problem than it fixes. Yes, like most people I know, I wish the city had never put those cameras in place. It makes no difference whether it was Mayor Daley or Mayor Emanuel, the stated reason for having those cameras is a lie. They are not there to promote safety but to generate revenue for the city. This mayor completely ignores the evidence that while the cameras might reduce broadside collisions, they increase rearend accidents. The major reason though that Mark Wallace’s ideas are lacking is he has proposed nothing to make up for the reduced revenues the city will get if the cameras are removed immediately as he keeps proposing. No doubt when he joined with others looking to get rid of the cameras it was a good idea, but like many good ideas somebody didn’t think about the
ultimate result. If taxes suddenly go up on just about everything, Chicagoans would have Mark Wallace and his followers to thank. There really is no way around an immediate ban on red light and speed cameras and residents of the city are taking a financial hit. We know from stories in the Chicago Tribune money coming into the city from those cameras totals in the millions of dollars. The city already is in just about every kind of financial hole it can be in, so it is clear if the camera money got cut off suddenly we would be in deeper doo. He, Wallace, is not the first or the only to rush off and believe he has a cure for a government or political ill. It would be good though if he and others like him before they convince themselves they are the people’s savior, look at the economic impact. Mark Wallace could achieve the same end result, and probably get some support for legislators if he had a plan and not just a demand. That plan should be a phasing out of the cameras, not an immediate ban. Then the plan should include some ideas or suggestions on how to replace that revenue that will stop coming in. Old folks used to always tell me pointing to a problem is the easy thing, but pointing to a fix ain’t so easy.

COMMENTARY
Should Israel strike Iran’s nuclear projects? Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist Who would have thought that the very close relationship between the nations of the United States and Israel would have deteriorated so fast during the last six years under the Obama Administration? When has a president of the United States refused to sit down with the sitting Prime Minister of Israel? Never! Have there ever been officers working in our White House refer to a Prime Minister of Israel as a “chicken s___?” Hardly! The true anti-Semitic/pro Muslim colors of Barack Hussein Obama are coming out. It is getting as scary as a horror movie. However, it is worse as this is real and the ugliness is oozing out right in front of our eyes. President Obama never revealed his coldness to Israel during his first campaign. I remember him visiting the nation and writing a note for the “Wailing Wall.” Apparently, it was all politics. Now that his tenure of two administrations and eight years is virtually cemented into history, he is letting his feelings come out. His whole crew is starting to emulate
Harry C. Alford their boss. I have never seen Secretary of State John Kerry act so laissez faire towards evil acts against the people of Israel or anti-Semitic violence in France, Australia or anywhere else. Hillary Clinton and Bill seem to be very quiet about all of this. The Democratic National Commit-
tee, DNC, is acting like they no longer need American Jewish support. Where is the outrage from Democrats on Capitol Hill? There is Chuck Schumer, Diane Feinstein and Barbara Boxer just to name a few powerful elected leaders of Jewish faith. What kind of “mojo” is Obama using? Noticing this 180 degree turn in America’s view on Israel is the international “bad boy” Iran. Iran repeatedly pledges to issue death and destruction to Israel and its entire people. They supply weapons, money and training to be used by anti-Israeli elements throughout the world. This nation is very serious about its evil quest and is doing all it can to make an Israeli Armageddon become a reality. What worries Israel most about their arch enemy Iran is the current and ongoing nuclear program that is taking place without any effective policing by the United States and other western nations. We invaded Iraq on the suspicion of a nuclear program being built. Iran is without a doubt doing the same without fear of the United States. Besides building a nuclear program without fear of the United States, Iran is putting its influence strategically around the Mid-
dle East. The nation aims to destroy Israel but also to have geopolitical influence with the majority of Muslim nations. Its navy is growing as well as its missile capability. It prowls the Persian Gulf which sits between itself and Saudi Arabia. It now patrols the Red Sea which has serious military implications if there is ever another world war. Its ships sail in front of Israel on the Mediterranean Sea. It has its army and air force roaming throughout Iraq. Syria’s closest ally is Iran and that has made a difference in Syria’s future in front of the Islamic State of ISIS. Whenever Syria starts to fall down under the attack of ISIS, Iran along with Russia will send in air power to push the enemy troops back. A recent shock to the western world is the overthrow of the government of Yemen by rebels allied with Iran. President Obama recently proclaimed Yemen to be the ideal example of his effective foreign policy. The next day the President of Yemen was overthrown. This puts Iranian influence on all borders of the nation of Saudi Arabia and Iran’s military can now attack Israel from all sides even without nuclear
arms. What makes Iran so cocky? Maybe the “answer” works every day inside our White House. President Obama’s closest advisor is Valerie Jarrett. She has power like no other person in the White House. President Obama listens to her advice like a child listening to its mama. Ms. Jarrett has direct ties to the nation of Iran. She was born there in 1956. The first two languages she learned to speak were Farsi (native tongue of Iran) and French. My people you cannot make this stuff up. A President who has a disdain for Iran’s bitter enemy, Israel, and allows Iran to do whatever it wishes at the detriment of our long-term ally Israel. The advice he gets from his closest advisor (who was never vetted) influences his hatred towards Israel. Israel has a very big problem. Without a doubt, this nation needs to strike the nuclear infrastructure Iran is building because it will definitely be used against it. There is no one in the White House who is going to stop it. Mr. Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerc®. Website: www.nationalbcc.org Email: halford@nationalbcc.org.
More evidence of Obama’s hostility toward HBCUs By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist As if we needed any more evidence, President Obama’s recent meeting with members of the Congressional Black Caucus revealed a deep-seated hostility toward the plight of struggling Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). According to Lauren Victoria Burke’s Black Caucus blog, CrewOf42.com, “President Obama was critical of Historically Black Colleges and Universities during a meeting with members of the Congressional Black Caucus this week according to several in attendance. The February 10 meeting was the first group gathering with the Black Caucus and the President since June 2013.” It continued, “Several who attended the meeting indicated that President Obama felt that the focus of HBCU’s needs to be on the schools changing their ways of doing business rather [than] on changes in federal policy. Those who attended said he was specifically critical of graduation rates and loan policies. The President also spoke to CBC members on his free community college plan which some HBCU advocates believe will hurt HBCUs.” Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.), a graduate of Clark Atlanta Universiwww.chicagocrusader.com
George E. Curry ty, told Burke, “He [Obama] said there were some HBCUs that were not good at graduating students and if they did not improve they’d have to go by the wayside. In other words he didn’t show much empathy for struggling HBCUs. It was like show me the numbers and if the numbers aren’t where they need to be, that’s it. It was a somewhat callous view of the unique niche HBCUs fill.” Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-NY) said, “I was concerned about what the President said because it feeds into a
narrative about the value of these institutions and whether they are [equipped] to educate our students and what the cost is for doing so. “Many of these institutions have not had a maintenance of effort on the part of states or the federal government and over time that wears on their ability to maintain standards or even advance beyond a certain level. It was very clear that he doesn’t have the same level of appreciation for what these institutions have done and could do in the future given the right support systems.” The blog quoted Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.), a graduate of South Carolina State University: “it’s forprofit schools where the graduation rate problem is – not HBCUs, the Parent PLUS loan stuff has to do with new rules on credit worthiness and I just think that in the discussion he mangled it.” Rep. Bennie Thompson, a product of two HBCUs – Tougaloo College and Jackson State University – was quoted: “What we ought to be talking about is: If there are weaknesses at certain HBCUs what do we do to strengthen those institutions?” Meanwhile, Hampton University President William R. Harvey, who has been chair of the White House Advisory Board on Historically Black Colleges and Universities since 2010, was highly critical of
Obama’s approach to HBCUs. In a speech at a meeting at NASA headquarters in Washington D.C. on Feb. 4, Harvey said, “I have to say that one of my biggest concerns or regrets is that we are not being used as the advisory board we are supposed to be. All this expertise – more than 150 years at the helm of HBCUs, decades as the heads of major philanthropic organizations, expertise in business, in fundraising and in public relations, connections on Wall Street, in the Ivy League and everywhere else. Yet, we are not consulted when it comes to policy changes and decisions impacting – in a major way – the institutions on whose behalf we are to advocate. “It happened with Pell. It happened with Parent Plus. And, now it is happening with the new community college initiative.” Harvey was also critical of Obama’s proposed college rating system and his plan to fund the first two years of education at community colleges. “Many of my colleagues have called me to say that the ‘free tuition for public community college’ initiative could also be a death knell for many of our institutions…” Harvey said. Judging by Harvey’s comments, many of the debacles could have been avoided if the White House had sought the advice of HBCU experts it had recruited as advisers.
Blacks Must control their own coMMunity
An even stronger indictment was Harvey’s summary of what has happened to HBCUs under the nation’s first Black president. He stated. “While we don’t know a lot, because a lot is not shared, we do know that federal support for HBCUs is showing an alarming downward trend. Over the last several years, all of the major Title IV programs had modifications and adjustments which make it much harder for HBCUs to get funding. We all know of the Parent PLUS debacle. These loans to our students are down. Pell grants to students at HBCUs are down. Direct loans to our students are down. Graduate subsidies have been eliminated. In addition to student support, overall support to Black colleges is down.” That’s not a compliment for a president who says he wants to increase educational opportunities for all Americans. REVIEWING BLACK NATIONALISM Dr. Conrad Worrill, Director/Professor, Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS) located at 700 East Oakwood Blvd, Chicago, Illinois, 60653, 773-268-7500, Fax: 773268-3835. E-mail: c-worrill@neiu.edu, Web site: www.ccics-chicago.org, Twitter: @CCICS_Chicago One of the biggest challenges African people face in America is to rejuvenate Black Nationalist thinking as struggle to determine for ourselves as a people what is in our best collective interests. There are far too many African people in this country who think what is good for other people should be good for us. Nothing could be further from the truth. We can only determine what is good for us by reestablishing Black Nationalist thinking and developing a Black Nationalist program of action. This is the missing link to the liberation of African people in America. Let us briefly review the development and impact of Black Nationalism in America. Black Nationalism is a tradition that emerged in the early nineteenth-century among those Black leaders who understood the need for African people in America to develop a national entity as the only solution for Black people in North America, Latin America, or the Caribbean. These nineteenth-century Black Nationalist leaders such as Denmark Vessey, Nat Turner, David Walker,
Dr. Conrad Worrill Henry Highland Garnet, James T. Holly, Martin R. Delany, Pap Singleton, Edwin McCabe, and Henry McNeal Turner understood that African people in America were a “nation within a nation” and should organize to collectively struggle for the liberation of Black people in this country and throughout the world. During this era there were some Black Nationalist leaders before, and after the Civil War, who led movements for people of African ancestry to leave this country and establish a homeland somewhere else. These proposals included Africa, Canada, and the Caribbean. Other Black Nationalist leaders led movements for Black people to control the towns where they lived and others who led movements to the western re-
gion of this country to establish all Black towns in Kansas and Oklahoma. The core of this Black Nationalist tradition has been to defeat and overthrow the system of white supremacy, seize control of land (somewhere) and to achieve self determination for the oppressed Black masses. The Black Nationalist tradition has always been opposed to integrations, assimilation, and accommodation as a solution to the problems of people of African ancestry in America. In this regard, Black Nationalist tradition has rejected the strategy and tactics of appealing to the morality of white people and their white supremacy system. Black Nationalists have been historically clear that people in power don’t teach powerless people how to get power. And they certainly don’t give power away, even though, when challenged, they may give up some concessions. As Black Nationalism emerged in the twentieth-century, the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey and the establishment of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) and the African Communicates League (ACL) became the leading spokesman for Black Nationalist ideas and organizing. Garvey used his varied skills to become on of our true twentieth-century freedom fighters. Garvey arrived in
Harlem, New York on March 16, 1916. By 1919, Garvey was well established as the President General of the UNIA/ACL that had membership of over three million people with more than three hundred branches in the United States. Perhaps Garvey’s greatest contribution to the upliftment of our people, through Black Nationalism, was his ability to find a formula for organizing African people around the African principle: the greatest good for the greatest number. This was reflected in the First International Convention of the Negro Peoples of the World, in Madison Square Garden, in 1920. Over twenty thousand Black people from all over the world witnessed the choosing of Red, Black, and Green as the colors of the Provisional Government. In this context, Garvey and the UNIA/ACL had established an economic arm, the Negro Factories Corporation, with cooperative stores, restaurants, steam laundry ships, tailor shops, dressmaking shops, millinery stores, a doll factory to manufacture Black dolls and a publishing house. Also, Garvey formed a Steamship Corporation. The Black Nationalist tradition was continued in the twentieth-century through the Nation of Islam and the Honorable Elijah Muhammad who utilized many of the Garvey and
UNIA/ACL organizing tactics and strategies. It was during the 1960s Black Power explosion that the Black Nationalist tradition reemerged through the influence of Malcolm X who adopted Black Nationalism as the political philosophy, economic and social philosophy of the organization of Afro American Unity in 1964 after he left the Nation of Islam. Finally, the Black Nationalist tradition, today, is spearheaded through the African Centered Education Movement. The mass acceptance of Kwanzaa, African Liberation Day, Buy Black Campaigns, the Reparations Movement, and Controlling Our Own Communities Campaigns are all part of the ongoing Black Nationalist tradition. Without vigorous Black Nationalist thinking and an aggressive Black Nationalist program of action, we will continue to chase false dreams created by our oppressors. We must put an end to this! Once Black Nationalism is understood by all Black people, it will be the foundation upon which the true liberation of people of African ancestry in America will take place. Please support the upcoming CCICS Open House Wednesday, April 10th 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. and Thursday, April 11th 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
At 100, Olivia Hooker is a Living History Lesson By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist Olivia Juliet Hooker celebrated her 100th birthday on February 12. In 1944, she was among the first five African American women allowed to serve in the Coast Guard as a SPAR (the acronym derived from the translations of the Coast Guard’s motto, “Semper Paratus, Always Ready”). SPAR was the nickname of the United States Coast Guard’s Women Reserve. Hooker was also one of the first Black women to receive a Ph.D. at the University of Rochester. A member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, active in United Methodist Women, Hooker has mentored dozens of students in her work as a psychology teacher and therapist. Her professional accomplishments are impressive, and she is living history as the oldest living survivor of the Tulsa massacre and the evisceration of Black Wall Street that occurred on May 31, 1921. Hooker is still sharing her memories of the Greenwood District 6
in Tulsa, an area called Little Africa or Black Wall Street because the African American community there was so strong and prosperous. She said, “We did not have to go downtown” because the community offered everything anyone needed, except a bank. Her father, Samuel Hooker, owned a department store and was a pillar in a community that included pharmacists, doctors, and teachers. One of the many lawyers in Greenwood was John Hope Franklin, Sr., the father of our esteemed historian, John Hope Franklin, Jr. Too many call the Tulsa massacre a “riot,” which ignores the fact that white people, purely out of economic envy, destroyed a thriving Black community. Their excuse – a young Black man, Dick Rowland, touched Sarah Page, who was operating the elevator he rode on. Some say he stumbled as the elevator stopped abruptly, but by the time the story circulated in the white Tulsa community, it was said that Dick Rowland had raped Sarah Page.
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2015
Dr. Julianne Malveaux That was the excuse white Tulsa needed to initiate what was called the Tulsa Race Riot and described as “one of the most devastating massacres in the history of US race relations.” Hooker recalls that whites in Tulsa had been stockpiling weapons to attack the Black community even before the much-exaggerated incident. Newspaper accounts of the Tulsa massacre
have disappeared, but Hooker recalls that one paper had the headline, “Negro To Be Lynched Tonight.” The lynching never happened because African American World War I veterans went to the jail to guard Rowland, bringing their weapons to ensure that the young man would not be hurt. The fact that Black men were willing to defend one of their own, along with the rumor of a rape, incited white Tulsans to destroy more than a thousand Black-owned homes and businesses and to cause the deaths of between 300 and 1,000 people. Hooker was six years old at the time of the massacre. She vividly remembers hearing some of the shots fired at her home before she and her family had to flee. She recalled that when she looked out of a window at her home to see guns pointed, her mother told her that the machine guns on the hill sported an American flag, which means “your country is shooting at you.” At 100, Hooker is still talking about Greenwood and Black Wall Street, still insisting that the

handful of survivors and their descendants deserve justice, restitution and reparations. The Oklahoma Commission to Study the Tulsa Race Riot recommended the same thing after spending several years investigating the massacre. They submitted a report to the Oklahoma legislature in 2001, but their recommendations have been ignored. In her travels, Hooker has been accompanied by attorney Gail Wright Sirmans, a neighbor and friend who works with Hooker because “she inspires me.” Wright Sirmans explained, “She comes off as a little old lady, but she is anything but. She is powerful, passionate and dedicated to fairness, and equally important, she is gracious, humble, and kind.” Hooker is also an independent spirit who still cooks for herself and only stopped driving a few years ago when her car gave out. Many of her memories reflect our rich Black history. She met Booker T. Washington when she was in elementary school. She remembers Walter White of the (Continued on page 17) www.chicagocrusader.com

Achieving a balanced budget by undermining their opportunities — from the ability to attend school without fear of violence or bullying, to the chance to afford a college education — is both immoral and irresponsible. The savings the governor promises are a false economy: numbers that barely add up on paper and fall far short of our responsibilities to invest in the people of Illinois, she said in a statement. Members of the Senate Black Caucus expressed disappointment in the budget address: “Not funding education at a 100 percent rate again this year is simply unacceptable. Ninety-nine percent funding would not be enough, so the proposed 95 percent is certainly not adequate,” “Yes, government leaders in positions of power hold many responsibilities, one of which is ensuring a thriving private sector, attractive to business and industry – but not to be forgotten are the awesome responsibilities of protecting and serving the people.” – State Senator Kimberly Lightford (D-Maywood 4t “Cutting services that uplift communities are not only a slap in the face, but it’s an attack on the lower and middle class. hoods in jeopardy by treating our state’s most vulnerable people like burdens.” – State Senator Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago 3rd_ The Chicago Teachers Union in their statement said: “Gov. Bruce Rauner famously said that he’s “been successful at everything [he’s] ever done.” Today’s budget address is no different. Gov. Rauner wants to be successful in destroying vitally necessary public services, including the state’s university system, drug treatment and breast cancer services, public transit, and the Department of Children and Family Services. Evidently, Gov. Rauner wants to be successful at destroying Illinois’ economy, too. The lessons from Greece, Ireland, Italy, and Kansas all show that public government austerity budgets don’t work to fix the economy and unnecessarily and dramatically exacerbate human suffering. The experiences in California and Minnesota show the clearest alternative forward: raise revenue from those most able to pay and the state’s economy can grow and prosper. This contrast points to the real issue: Gov. Rauner most wants to be successful at shoveling money to himself and his wealthy supporters. The tax cuts Bruce Rauner wholeheartedly supports overwhelmingly benefit the privileged few at the top of Illinois’ economy; the vast majority gains practically nothing and loses dramatically. Rauner’s thoroughly disproven voodoo economics is an unacceptable attack on the working families of Illinois, and in his zero-sum world, ‘success’ means failure for everyone else.”

$480 Million Corinthian student loan forgiveness helps some but not all Thousands of students who are now or formerly enrolled at one of 52 Corinthian Colleges across the country will soon feel $480 million of financial relief on their private student loans. An agreement between the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and Zenith Education, a subsidiary of Educational Credit Management Corporation (ECMC) and long-time federal loan guarantor, secured the relief. Announced February 3, the agreement also involves other federal regulators and paved the way for ECMC to acquire most of
Charlene Crowell the troubled for-profit campuses formerly a part of Corinthian Colleges’ nationwide network. Former and current Corinthian students enrolled at one of its 52 Everest and WyoTech campuses located in 17 states will be affected. The states are: Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Washington and Wyoming. Many of these campuses are clustered in highly-populated suburban areas including Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Tampa and Detroit; as well as inner-city locations in Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Jacksonville, Pittsburgh and Seattle. ECMC created its new Zenith Education Group as a nonprofit provider of career school training. Technically, the nonprofit status removes Zenith and its operations from federal regulations of for-profit colleges. For the Department of Education, Zenith’s nonprofit status removes it in large part from mandatory compliance with two key rules known as gainful employment and 90/10. The gainful employment rule, announced last year, was intended to eliminate programs that create too much debt and not enough benefits for students. The 90/10 rule limits the amount of money for-profit colleges can receive in federal aid. The change to nonprofit status will also most likely rewww.chicagocrusader.com
move enforcement jurisdiction by the Federal Trade Commission. One consumer advantage resulting from the nonprofit status will be that Zenith will not be able to force students into mandatory arbitration clauses, long-considered to be a builtin advantage for businesses. In its news release, Zenith acknowledged its freedom from mandatory compliance but also announced its intent to “voluntarily adhere to DOE’s gainful employment rules for all of its programs.” In addition to forgiving $480 million in private loans, the CFPB agreement requires Zenith to cooperate with an independent compliance monitor. The inclusion of an independent monitor is to another and similar role that resulted from the multi-state negotiated mortgage settlement. The yet-to-be appointed monitor will focus on Zenith’s transparency and compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and accreditation standards. Approximately 40 percent of the former Corinthian students affected by the transaction will also be afforded several options in continuing their education. These options, known as the “Student Choice Program” include: full refunds of tuition and fees paid to Corinthian for those who choose not to continue enrollment; transfer vouchers for student remaining but selecting another course of study; or remaining in their previous chosen study area. How well this program works for students will largely be determined by how well students understand their options. The responsibility for articulating the options rests fully with Zenith. Although new students enrolling after February 2 at one of the Everest campuses will receive a 20 percent cut in tuition costs, the move does not acknowledge that Corinthian had already increased its tuition by as much as 14 percent. The increase had the effect of pushing students into its costly private student loan program. Some may view these developments as providing some degree of relief for students. In reality, however, much more remains to be resolved. The September 2014 lawsuit filed by CFPB identified Corinthian’s private label student loans to be a major problem. Further, the suit alleged that Corinthian used bogus advertising targeted to low-income students who were often the first generation of their family to attend college. These false claims pushed students into the costly private label loans and exploited their limited exposure to the world of higher education. The advertised promises of job prospects and careers never happened. Further, Corinthian’s tuition costs were so high that an associate degree came with a price tag ranging from $33,000 to $43,000. The costs for a bachelor’s degree ran higher
from $60,000 to $75,000. While some students have been assisted, the recent agreement does not offer any protections or compensations for students enrolled at Corinthian’s campuses that were not a part of the ECMC-Zenith acquisi-
tion. Lastly, the settlement does not alter any federal student loans that students at any Corinthian campus may have incurred. As a result, CFPB announced that the lawsuit against Corinthian remains ongoing. A second and sepa-
rate lawsuit by the State of California against Corinthian may yet provide some financial relief for students enrolled at a Corinthian campus in that state. For Maura Dundon, a senior poli(Continued on page 17)

Julian H. Lewis the University of Chicago, his M.D. from Rush Medical College in 1917. He is the first African American to teach at the Universi-
ty of Chicago in 1917 as an instructor in pathology and later as an assistant professor in 1923. He was a noted expert in immunology.
Lewis later received a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship award to study in Basel, Switzerland. Lewis continued his career after leaving the University of Chicago in 1943 as a research scientist and physician at the first Black-owned and operated hospital in the United States—Provident Hospital in Chicago. He remained at Provident holding a number of positions working until he died at the age of 98. Lewis will also be recognized for his work as an activist and mentor who supported and championed the early careers of a number of prominent African Americans, from dancer Katherine Dunham to University of Chicago professor Dr. James E. Bowman, father of Senior Presidential Advisor Valerie Jarrett. “I would be hard pressed to name any prominent Black student or faculty member who didn’t benefit from Lewis’ support, “says Bart Schultz, director of the Civic Knowledge Project, and lead sponsor of this event. “He had a terrific impact as a scientist, but as a person, he was also remarkable.” The event will also look at Lewis’ impact on the culture of the University of Chicago itself, a network of support he created at a time
when many students were confronting racism. “While he was never tenured, and that remains a question, Lewis became a catalyst from promoting diversity at the University of Chicago.” Branch says “His achievements had a far reaching impact.” Among them, says University of Kansas Medical Center Professor and event speaker Dr. Christopher Crenner, Lewis became the “bridge” between the University and Provident Hospital. “Lewis and his professor, Dr. H. Gideon Wells were the only two professors to work in both places,” Crenner says. Dr. Lewis was a pioneer in many respects.” Also joining Branch and Crenner as event presenters will be Tyrone Haymore, founder, director and curator of the Robbins Historical Society and Museum in Robbins, Ill. A highlight of the event will be the unveiling of a specially-commissioned oil painting of Lewis, which will be donated to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, scheduled to open in Washington, D.C. in early 2016. Branch II, who will be he principal speaker at the event. “It literally changed people’s perspectives on race.” Born in Shawneetown, Ill. in 1891, Lewis was the son of two educators who were born in slavery and eventually freed from slavery. By Elaine Hegwood Bowen, MSJ By Raymond Ward GET YOUR MOJO WORKIN’: Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events has announced a special centennial celebration honoring Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon at the 32nd Annual Chicago Blues Festival, June 12 through June 14 along the shores of Lake Michigan in Grant Park. The weekend of free blues performances will culminate with a centennial celebration at the Petrillo Music Shell honoring Muddy Waters, the “father of modern Chicago blues,” and Willie Dixon, the “poet laureate of the blues,” on Sunday, June 14, beginning at 5:30 P.M. Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon were part of the “great migration” of African Americans from the southern United States of Chicago in the late 1930s and 40s. With Dixon’s music and lyrics and Water’s electric guitar they are the nexus that transformed the Delta blues to the Chicago sound. Together they have influenced generations of musicians like the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Buddy Guy, Chuck Berry and countless other blues, jazz and rock-n-roll artists. The two Chicago blues legends each had a hand in the origins of the Chicago Blues festival. On August 30, 1969, Willie Dixon along with Murphy Dunne, produced a blues concert at the former Chicago Band Shell. The 10 hour precursor to today’s festival included perfor-

mances by Bo Diddley, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, Big Mama Thornton, Junior Wells and ended with Muddy Waters performing “Got My Mojo Workin.” Fifteen years later, the first Chicago Blues Festival was held in 1984 in honor of Muddy Waters, who had passed away the year before. This year’s festival, coinciding with the centennial of both musicians’ birth year, will now pay tribute with performances by proteges, former band mates, friends and family members. Billy Branch and the Sons of Blues will kick-off the June 14 finale event at 5:30 P.M.at the Petrillo Music Shell. The Willie Dixon centennial tribute will follow at 6:30 P.M. featuring Billy Branch, Keisha Dixon, Tomiko Dixon, Freddie Dixon, Alex Dixon, Bobby Dixon, Sugar Blue and John Watkins among others. Dixon penned blues classics like “Wang Dang Doodle,” a song made famous by blues queen Koko Taylor and “I’m Your Hoochie Coochie Man” for Muddy Waters. At 8:15 P.M., Muddy Waters, the man who electrified the blues will be celebrated with a jam session by former band members, family and friends. The tribute will include Bob Margolin, Mud Morganfield, Big Bill Morganfield, John Primer, Rick Kreher, Bob Stroger, Kenny “Beedy Eyes” Smith, E.G. McDaniel, Paul Oscher, Jerry Portnoy and Barrelhouse Chuck. The Chicago Blues Festival is FREE and open from 11:00 A.M. until 9:30 P.M. daily. 12

Selma native lives rewarding life as Chicago educator and author To close out Black History Month, there was a recent list of books written about Selma, Alabama, which were available at the Chicago Public Library. The
could never be viewed as casual. {Excerpt}: “One time, late on a typical beautiful summer afternoon, as the adults sat on the front porch and the children played in the yard, a
Erin Goseer Mitchell list may have been impressive, but it didn’t mention local author Erin Goseer Mitchell who, after a 38-year career with the Chicago Public School system, wrote a book about life growing up in Selma. Her book, “Born Colored, Life Before Bloody Selma,” is a great read and filled with fascinating history. Mitchell was born in Selma and grew up there and in Fitzgerald, Georgia, one generation before the Civil Rights Movement. She was thrilled after she took a recent trip to Atlanta, where she had an opportunity to watch the movie “Selma” on the big screen with her grandson and his family. “That was my Christmas gift from my grandson Kyle. It is a powerful movie, very emotional for me,” she said. Mitchell (who is a long-time Crusader subscriber) chatted with me about life in Selma and some of the film’s main characters. “Three of the people I’ve written about who were my neighbors in Selma while I was growing up are main players in the movie,” she said. “I have honored them in my “Trailblazers” chapter. The first car was a convertible, with a driver, a passenger in the front seat, and one person sitting high on the back seat. The people in the cars that followed stuck their heads and arms out of the car windows, waving their hands that were made into fists. If their intent was to scare us, they achieved their goal. After they passed, Grandma called us into the house, locked all of the doors, and kept the lights off. She told me that these were people who did ‘bad things,’ like castrating colored men, or hanging them in trees with ropes around their necks.” The house to which Mitchell refers was located right across the street from the Boynton home. SSCAC founder Eldzier Cortor returns for once in a lifetime conversation Artist continues to produce works of political and social significance at 99 The South Side Community Art Center (SSCAC) presents “An Afternoon with Eldzier Cortor” on Saturday, February 21 from 4:30 6:30 p.m. At age 99, Cortor is the last surviving founder of the SSCAC and is still a practicing artist. Nigel Freeman, curator of African American Art at Swann Gallery New York, will interview the artist and printmaker known for weaving social and political themes into his work. Additionally, an exhibit of Cortor’s work will be on display and available for purchase. The Center is located at 3831 S. Michigan Ave. Cortor’s family moved to Chicago from Virginia when he was an infant. He attended Englewood High School with fellow artists Charles Wilbert White and Margaret Burroughs, later attending the Art Institute of Chicago (AIC) and graduating in 1936. In 1941, with funding from the Works Project Administration (WPA), Cortor helped found the South Side Community Arts Center. Cortor exhibited in the 1938 interracial art show “An Exhi-
bition in Defense of Peace and Democracy,” which was sponsored by the Chicago Artists’ Group, and in 1940 he was one of the young artists to exhibit at “The Exhibition of the Art of the American Negro” in Chicago. In his work with the WPA he primarily drew scenes of Bronzeville. The depiction of African-Americans became the defining subject of Cortor’s career, specifically the portrayal of the African-American woman, which he commonly represented nude in paintings and prints. “She conveys a feeling of eternity,” said Cortor. “The continuance of life. The Black woman represents the Black race. She is the Black spirit.” He received two Rosenwald Fellowships, which allowed him to travel to the Sea Islands of Georgia. Afterward, Cortor transitioned to New York, and in 1946 Life magazine published his artwork of a nude African-American female. In 1949 he received a Guggenheim fellowship, which provided the opportunity to travel to Cuba, Jamaica and Haiti. He settled in Port-au-Prince where he taught art for two years. Tickets for “An Afternoon with Eldzier Cortor” are $25 for SSCAC

BOOKWORM SEZ “Stella by Starlight”
By Sharon M. Draper c.2015, Atheneum Books for Young Readers $16.99 / $19.99 Canada 336 pages Have you ever wanted to do something big–but you didn’t know how? You struggled. You practiced. You tried and tried and tried until finally, you saw where you went wrong and where you went right. Aha! That’s when you realized that whatever you wanted to do – you could! It might have been a small action, and it might’ve been something great, but never giving up was the way to go. In the new book “Stella by Starlight” by Sharon M. Draper, for instance, a young girl wanted to become a writer. Her daddy wanted to vote. Fire can be a good thing. It can bring warm rooms and hot meals – but when Stella Mills saw the sparks from across Kilkenny Pond that night in 1932, she knew there was www.chicagocrusader.com
nothing good about that fire or the nine hooded men surrounding it. Quickly, she and her brother ran to wake their parents because they knew that everybody in their neighborhood was in danger when the Klan was about. Normally, life in Bumblebee, North Carolina, was a safe place for Stella and her friends. Yes, it was true that there were places they couldn’t go because they weren’t white and no, their Blacks-only school wasn’t nearly as nice as the whites-only school, but Stella loved her schoolmates and neighbors because they always watched out for one another. When one lacked, the others shared, and that made her proud. But the Klan was another matter,
Sharon M. Draper
and every Black person in Bumblebee knew it. Even Stella’s teacher, Mrs. Grayson, understood the seriousness of what was happening and she tried to keep her students calm and safe by distracting them with writing and with stories. Stella loved stories, and she loved writing but she didn’t think she was any good at either of them. That would change, though, when her friend, Tony, told her to write what she knew – and so Stella did. She wrote about the Klan and their dragons; about airplanes and books and grown men making boys bleed. She wrote about gifts, her father’s reason for celebration, and the courage it took to stand up for your rights. Yep. I loved “Stella by Starlight,” and there are many reasons why. Its authenticity is at the top of the list. Author Sharon M. Draper gives this story a historical basis, yet she keeps it fictional so young readers can understand and identify with the characters. Those characters are second on the list: I loved Stella! She’s funny and smart, and her determination will make it easy for your child to want to know what happens to her and her family. I also liked the way Draper lends child-friendly, not-too-detailed, nottoo-scary action in this chapter book, and the anti-racism theme re-
ally struck me as timely. And then there’s the… well, I could go on and on but let’s just say that this is the perfect book for a 7-

to-12-year-old reader who enjoys a good historical novel. For that kid, “Stella by Starlight” is a book she’ll want.

Lyric Opera of Chicago’s ‘Lyric Unlimited’ presents klezmer opera, ‘The Property’ Lyric Opera of Chicago’s Lyric Unlimited presents the world premiere of “The Property,” a klezmer opera by 28-year-old Los Angeles based Polish composer Wlad Marhulets and librettist Stephanie Fleischmann, Wednesday, February 25, with five performances through Thursday, March 5. The world premiere presentations of “The Property” are presented in partnership with the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood February 25, 26, 27, with additional performances at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in suburban Skokie March 4-5. The world premiere of “The Property” is the centerpiece of Lyric Unlimited’s Memory and Reckoning events which surround the Lyric premiere of “The Passenger” by Miecyslaw Weinberg February 24-March15. Lyric Unlimited’s commissioning of “The Property” and the choice to present it concurrently with “The Passenger” was inspired by the life and cultural identity of “The Passenger” composer Mieczyslaw Weinberg. As a Polish Jew and the son of a Yiddish theater conductor, Weinberg’s formative years were steeped in klezmer and Jewish liturgical music – defining influences that later informed his compositions. And he, like “The Property” character Regina Segal, fled his homeland to escape the Nazi occupation. “The Property” was adapted from the acclaimed novel by Israeli author Rutu Modan and tells the story of Regina Segal (mezzo-soprano Jill Grove) and her granddaughter Mica (soprano Anne Slovin), who travel to modern Warsaw to try to regain family property lost dur14

Marhulets’s score for “The Property” incorporates traditional and modern musical styles – from klezmer to funk. Marhulets is known for incorporating klezmer influences into his work. His “Concerto for Klezmer Clarinet and Orchestra” had its world premiere by clarinetist David Krakauer with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in December 2009 (when Marhulets was studying composition at Juilliard with Rose Ann Grundman Wlad Marhulets ing World War II. Additional roles in “The Property” will be portrayed by baritones James Maddalena and Nathaniel Olson; bass-baritone Sam Handley (Ryan Opera Center alumnus) and soprano Julianne Park. Jill Grove received rave reviews for her performances as Ježibaba in Lyric’s 2014 production of “Rusalka” and the Witch in the company’s 2013 production of “Hansel and Gretel.” James Maddalena is internationally known for his performances in American opera, particularly the works of John Adams. SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING
A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe Time is the greatest commodity. It leaves us never to return. Never have these words been more true: Time keeps on slippin, slippin, slippin into the future, are lyrics from the song “Fly Like An Eagle” by the Steve Miller Band. That’s why I often quote a favorite “Yesterday is history—tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift that’s why it’s called the present.” For years, I shared this during my radio show as a reminder that NOW is the only time we have. Although, our next breath isn’t promised, I believe most of us take life for granted every single day. We procrastinate on our dreams, spending time with family, calling that friend or taking time to relax. I’ll do it later or to-
morrow. Guess what—tomorrow isn’t promised. The time given to us on this earth is a precious commodity. We never know when the gift of time is going to end. However, God loves us so much that we are all given an equal allotment of time—24 hours each day—but how we use that time is totally up to each individual. The holy writ declares in Psalm 39:4 “Show me, LORD, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is.” Just as we should balance quality time among self, family and work. We must never fail to realize that it is God that gives us every waking moment that we have. Therefore, it’s equally important that we give some of that time back to Him. Whether it’s morning,
noon or night—you should always allot time for daily devotion, praise, prayer, meditation on God’s goodness and worship of your King of Kings. Ten minutes is better than no time at all. This quality one-on-one time with our Maker allows growth in our faith, grace, character, wisdom and strength in order to better navigate through life. It’s important to realize that life consist of moments not years, therefore use each moment wisely because once it’s gone you will never see it again. Begin to enjoy and be grateful for every breath you take, for it is a gift. Live your life boldly, in forgiveness, free of complaints in the light and love of God, knowing that you can only

receive what you give. Stop waiting for the perfect time—it may never come, especially since nothing or no one is perfect. Accept where you are right now, bless it and live. The Crusader Gospel Corner Vocal Powerhouse Beverly Crawford broke new ground in 2014 with her 7th solo CD “Thank You For All You’ve Done” debuting at the #1 position in Billboard Magazine Top Gospel Albums sales chart. “All I can say is thank you God and thank you to all of the people who have bought the CD,” says Crawford. “A number one album is something that I would have never imagined for myself but I’m truly thankful for the support that radio
nered a 2015 Stellar Awards nomination for Traditional Female Vocalist of the Year and will be performing on this year’s telecast. With fans ranging from President Obama to Natalie Cole and Patti LaBelle, Beverly Crawford has created a niche for herself as one of gospel’s most passionate vocal ambassadors and a singer’s singer. Beverly Crawford and fans have shown the project and it’s my prayer that the message of the music really encourages and inspires everyone who hears it.” One of the most in-demand artists in the music industry, with over 200+ dates a year, Crawford continues to circle the USA with an aggressive concert tour to push the new project. Riding high on the success of her pulsating remake of The Caravans’ 1962 classic “Sweeping Through the City,” Crawford’s first single went all the way to #10 on Billboard’s Hot Gospel Airplay chart. breaker (a play on Tasha Cobb’s recent #1 hit “Break Every Chain”). Her welterweight vocals have knocked out the competition and punched a half dozen classic modern day church songs over the years such as “It’s About Time for a Miracle,” “He’s Done Enough” and her roofraising gem, “Jesus, Precious King.” Crawford’s dozen-track CD was recorded live at Antioch Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church in Dallas, TX and jointly produced by Crawford’s longtime team of Michael Bereal and James Roberson. Buoyed by the dynamic, heartthumping first radio single “Sweeping Through The City,” it’s an en-
gaging balance of the traditional, Sunday morning church-styled songs Crawford is known for alongside well-crafted contemporary praise and worship songs by noted composers such as Melvin Williams, Derrick Lee, Stan Jones and Rodney Posey. The project opens with the single, a high-octane re-vamp of The Caravans’1962 hit “Sweeping Through The City.” From there, Crawford delivers heartfelt gratitude on the albums second radio “Thank You For All You’ve Done” then lifts the roof with a new rendition of her bluesy concert staple “Jesus, Precious King,” the hair-raising song that put her on the gospel map almost twenty years ago. Crawford intensifies the worship atmosphere with the beautiful “Inhabit My Praise” then making a segue into the mid-tempo handclapper “Every Breath.” She then puts her stamp on the majestic worship anthem “You Are” that was written by Stan Jones (Brian Courtney Wilson, Marvin Sapp, John P. Kee). Next up is the sing-a-long “Anyhow Praise” that shows off Crawford’s volcanic vocals on full display. Her daughter Latrina wrote “Hero” in tribute to her grandfather Bishop Camp who passed away in 2007. While Latrina opens the song, mother and daughter trade verses and adlibs on this touching song. Crawford explores new musical territory on the Christian pop-spiced “I Need You” that features her niece Chachita MimsBrinkley (a soprano who has recorded with Bishop T.D. Jakes) and her niece’s husband Kerry along with Crawford’s own son T.J. doing a very nimble guitar solo. The exhilarating concert closes with Melvin Williams’ (The Williams Brothers) catchy hip-rocker “I Know It Was The Blood.”

Trials to triumphs at the New Roseland Hospital City of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel lauded the amazing comeback of a South Side hospital that was on the verge of closing less than two years ago. Emanuel praised the efforts of administrators and staff at the New Roseland Community Hospital during the hospital’s 2nd Annual Legislative Breakfast. More than 225 elected officials, members of
Ald. Carrie Austin the clergy, physicians, employees, patients and community stakeholders attended the event at the Salvation Army Kroc Center in the Greater Roseland Community.
“Roseland is an anchor for community healthcare and economic development,” Mayor Emanuel said. “To all legislators who are here, both from City Council and from Springfield, I want to thank you for your leadership and ensuring that the Greater Roseland community has the healthcare that they need and they deserve. When it comes to healthcare, it should not be the exception - it should be the expectation for everybody in the city of Chicago.” The event also featured Illinois State Senators Emil Jones III and Antonio “Tony” Munoz; Illinois State Representatives Robert “Bob” Rita and Marcus Evans; Aldermen Carrie Austin (34th Ward), Anthony “Tony” Beale (9th Ward) and Willie Cochran (20th Ward); and Cook County Commissioner Bridget Gainer. “It’s a pleasure to stand and talk about what RCH means to me,” Jones said. “Everyone said the hospital was about to close a couple of years ago, but I knew I was not about to let that happen on my watch. Whenever I need a doctor, I run right to Roseland Hospital and they take care of me and give me excellent treatment.” To highlight the dramatic turnaround, the event featured a video that outlined the hospital’s 5-Pillar

The New Roseland has increased its total number of employees by 15% to 500 since restructuring began in July 2013. “Roseland is truly a community hospital,” Evans said. “It’s not only taking care of folks in the hospital,
it’s also employing those folks. I’m a cancer survivor. I’ve sent up a lot of prayers, now I’m going to be sending up a lot of action. So you can count on State Representative Marcus Evans to continue to be committed to Roseland and all safety-net hospitals.” During the breakfast, speakers addressed Roseland’s planned development of a new lung-health clinic, the Roseland Center for Breathing Easy, and hopes that it
can build the Barack Obama Trauma Center, a Level 1 Trauma Center the Roseland community and entire South Side desperately needs. “Sheer will kept the doors of our hospital open during a time of great crisis,” Roseland CEO and President Tim Egan said. “Now, a clear vision of our services meeting the healthcare needs of our community will keep our hospital thriving for the next generation.”
Helping children with asthma breathe easier in Englewood By Dr. Victoria Persky When people think of problems facing the Englewood neighborhood, high rates of childhood asthma isn’t likely the first thought that comes to mind. Yet, childhood asthma rates in this section of the city are the highest in Chicago and among the highest in the country. Another issue plaguing these already sick children is limited access to quality health care. For children with asthma whose caregivers lack transportation, additional income to pay for medical services, have inflexible work hours or just lack information on the disease, asthma can go uncontrolled and even be deadly. As a way to help address these daunting circumstances, dozens of Englewood children have been receiving care where they live, learn, work and play for the past decade. But how was this possible amidst the economic instability and dangerous conditions that have plagued the community for years? The Addressing Asthma in Englewood Project (AAEP) sent asthma educators into the community to provide home-based education, trigger removal and care coordination for these children. As a result of these efforts, asthma-related ER visits/hospital16
izations were reduced by 50 percent, the need for medication during an asthma episode declined, and caregivers learned to better manage their child’s condition. All too often, free time can be a real luxury. Taking time off work or finding transportation to a doctor’s appointment are problems for many families who have
children with asthma (or other chronic health conditions). By providing home visits with an asthma educator and offering evening and weekend visits, the AAEP was able to improve health outcomes. Checking in with patients by phone and staying interested in their daily lives was important, too. Overcoming cultural barriers is

Magic Johnson donates monies for Youth Summer Jobs (Cont’d from page 1) findings, we felt compelled to help bring this opportunity to a greater number of kids who can benefit.” In recent years, the federal government—along with state and local governments— has provided less funding for summer jobs programs. Emanuel has said this is to the detriment of Chicago’s youth and welcomed the donation by Johnson and Walter saying the city will also be adding
$6 million to the program. Emanuel also looked to increase funding for these types of programs by using private partners. “Through this generous grant, more youth will stay safe, active and engaged this summer while getting the skills and on-the-job training necessary for a bright future,” Emanuel said. Crusader spoke with youth who said jobs are hard to come by during the summer unless you are
seeking to work in a fastfood joint. They say they want to find summer jobs or internships in careers they are interested in. “I eventually want to go into the medical field,” said Tanya Allen of Burnside. “I think I want to be a lab technician, but it’s hard to find something in that field during the summer months. Most of the jobs are in working in day camps or food operations. That’s not my interest, so

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR and present the Chicago version which should be called “Where’s Bobby?” as in Rush. It seems our congressman has gone MIA with warning and little explanation. A call to his office gets you the response that he is on leave. That was a shocker because I hadn’t heard a whisper about him not being on the Hill. A couple of years ago he announced he was taking a leave due to his wife’s poor health and some health challenges he was dealing with. Everyone was understanding and urged him to put himself and family first. Eventually he returned to Congress and things seem to be in order. The Congressman courageously and publicly shared his battle with throat cancer. It was
(Continued from page 4) very understandable that he needed time away, several months to properly deal with that. There has been no mention that his or his wife’s health has taken a turn, so it was very surprising to hear he was on leave. What was even more surprising was to see him at a news conference endorsing Rahm Emanuel for re-election. Bobby Rush was one of the mayor’s most vocal critics when Emanuel convinced the school board to close 50 schools. Rush talked about the devastation and hardships the closings would bring. Much, if not most of Black Chicago agreed with him. Now, we get this 180 turn on the mayor by Rush, and it simply doesn’t make any
sense unless you believe the rumor mill that has the congressman trading his endorsement for the promise of a community center being built next to the church in Englewood that he pastors. The congressman also has some financial issues with the Feds that I am sure he would love to see go away. No one should doubt it Emanuel has enough clout from his old days as a congressman and chief of staff to President Obama to make those problems disappear. Not only do his constituents deserve to know where’s Bobby, we also deserve to know where’s Bobby’s thinking these days. Walter Miller

I’m thinking about trying to volunteer at a hospital or maybe even the Red Cross.” Rondell Anderson said he wants to become a carpenter when he gets older. The 15-year-old sophomore said he works with his uncle during the summer repairing porches. He said he would love for the city to come up with a partnership with local trade unions to train young people in carpentry as the city did with the electrical union late last year. “I think there are a lot of young people who are not interested in college, who are left out during the summer and that’s when
the trouble starts,” Anderson said. “When kids get bored, they get into stupid stuff. I think the more of us they can give jobs, the more peaceful it will be.

Mitchell was pleased with Toussaint’s performance. “I feel that Lorraine Toussaint did an outstanding job of capturing the spirit of Mrs. Boynton and the climate of that time,” Mitchell said, while adding that last summer a part of Lapsley Street was renamed Boynton Street. Mitchell also grew up with Jean Jackson, who was portrayed in the movie by Niecy Nash, in a scene where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other organizers gathered at the home for a huge, home-cooked breakfast and strategy meeting. The stories in Mitchell’s book are further described as revealing the insights of a child and the hard-won wisdom of a segregated Deep South survivor. By simply telling the truth about the daily lives of family and friends, Mitchell captures the tyranny upon which the [Civil Rights] Movement was built.

Blockbuster trade brings Pondexter back home to play for Sky By J. Coyden Palmer Chicago native and Marshall High School alum Cappie Pondexter will be returning to town after a trade earlier this week that sent Epiphanny Prince to New York, in exchange for the West Side native who will now be the starting shooting guard for the Chicago Sky. The move makes the Sky the favorite to repeat in the Eastern Conference, where last year they made their first appearance in the WNBA Finals in the franchise’s history. The Sky fell to the Phoenix Mercury in three games, the same franchise that originally drafted Pondexter. “Being able to play for a team and coach with an opportunity to win a championship is exciting,” said Pondexter. “And coming home to do it is the best part!” Pondexter, who played her college ball at Rutgers, was recently named one of the top 15 players in the WNBA’s history. She has won two league championships in 2007 and 2009 and is a perennial WNBA AllStar. She is currently ranked 12th in all-time scoring. Pondexter was also a member of the 2008 USA Women’s Basketball Olympic team that won the Gold Medal. It was rumored that Prince’s days in Chicago were numbered after her erratic performances during last year’s
playoff run. With Elena Delle Donne injured for most of the playoffs, many expected Prince to pick up the scoring and leadership void. But she struggled, averaging only nine points a game and shooting 29% from the field while averaging 29 minutes. The coaching staff seemingly lost confidence in Prince as well, as she was often on the bench during crunch time. “I am thrilled to have one of the league’s most fierce competitors join our team,” said Sky Head Coach and General Manager Pokey Chatman. “Cappie’s ability in the open court, half court, as well as on the defensive end of the floor, makes us a better team. She’s an All-Star, a WNBA Champion and, simply put, a winner with a hunger for greatness that can galvanize a team in its pursuit of a championship.” The move also could be a win for the Sky in terms of marketing as well. Pondexter, who got a tattoo of the WNBA on her arm when she was still a student at Marshall, is very popular among Chicago basketball fans, who consider her high school royalty. The only player to be named Miss Illinois Basketball in consecutive years, Pondexter is the pride of the West Side. “I will now be going to more Sky games,” said James Henderson, who said he remembers Pondexter from her days of playing at the West Side
IN A BIG TRADE on Feb. 16, the Chicago Sky acquired Chicago native and West Side basketball royalty Cappie Pondexter (right) from the New York Liberty in exchange for guard Epiphanny Prince (left). Pondexter is one of the most prolific scorers in WNBA history and will bring experience and leadership to the Sky. or to tip-off, the team will unveil its YMCA. “She was that girl who al- way.” The Sky will open their 2015 cam- 2014 Eastern Conference Champiways wanted to play with the boys. And she wouldn’t just hang with paign on June 5 at Allstate Arena in onship banner. For more informathem, she would beat the crap outta Rosemont, Illinois when they host tion or to purchase tickets, call them on the basketball court.
