10 years later E2 families seek answers By J. Coyden Palmer Ten years after 21 people were killed at a South Side nightclub, friends and families of the victims came together on a cold Sunday afternoon for a vigil on the solemn anniversary. The gathering in the 2300 block of South Michigan Avenue February 17 in front of the building that now sits vacant was therapeutic for some, emotionally draining for others and a reminder for a city still in shock a decade later of what happened on a night that was supposed to be fun. The E2 nightclub at the time was one of the most popular in the African American community. It also doubled as a small concert venue and had a restaurant on the first floor frequented by politicians, celebrities, and guests from out of town. But Chicago officials had cited the establishment numerous times for code violations and a court order said the club should not have been open the night of Feb. 17, 2003. It was a night when the club was packed with over 1,000 patrons, with people celebrat-

ing birthday parties and those just out looking to have a good time. But a disturbance on the dance floor led to security being called in. In an effort to regain order, security officers deployed a chemical irritant spray that got into the ventilation ducts and affected hundreds of patrons, who in an attempt to escape the noxious fumes, began to panic and a stampede ensued. Hundreds became trapped in a steep and narrow stairwell that led to the main door. But the doors to the club opened inward from the outside, a code violation, and one that proved to be fatal. The crush of humanity injured over 50 people as first responders reported the stairwell was packed with people six feet high. Those who perished suffocated; some taking their final breath on the backs of those who survived, witnesses said. The court order has been scrutinized for the past 10 years and the ongoing legal battle of who was responsible that fateful night continues. Club owners Calvin (Continued on page 3)

A new road to Pullman Park By Wendell Hutson The Pullman Park project on the South Side is the brainchild of Alderman Anthony Beale (9th), and this week Governor Pat Quinn boosted the development with state funding that would help create 1,000 permanent jobs and 700 construction jobs. Beale, who is also a candidate for the Second Congressional District, joined Quinn earlier this week to unveil a reconstructed stretch of Doty Road just north of 111th Street and west of the Bishop Ford Expressway. In September 2008, the effects of Hurricane Ike reached Chicago creating flooding for two days and essentially washing out the road, making access to Pullman Park difficult. But thanks to $4.6 million from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity the road has been repaired, which Quinn said would attract more retailers to the site. “This is the largest tract for redevelopment in the city of Chicago,” Quinn said of Pullman Park. “This is big,” Quinn said. Construction began in September 2011 for (Continued on page 15)

Forum addresses violence in Chicago By Wendell Hutson Nathaniel Pendleton will never see his 15-year old daughter, Hadiya Pendleton, graduate from high school, get married or have children. That’s because two gang members, now charged with first degree murder and are in police custody, allegedly shot Hadiya dead on Jan. 29. According to Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy, the pair has admitted their role in the killing and said Hadiya was not the intended target. But Nathaniel said her death was not in vain and the national attention Chicago has received following her death has given him hope that changes are underway to curb violence. “I am hoping that the president’s push for tighter gun laws bring about a difference,” Pendleton said via phone during a February 11 forum at WVON radio addressing violence. “Even though the funeral is behind me I am still numb over her death.” Pendleton and his wife were in Washington, D.C. this week as guest of First Lady Michelle Obama to hear the State of the Union speech. And President Barack Obama echoed Pendleton’s desire to curb gun violence during his State of the Union address. The president visited Chicago recently where he addressed the rash of gun violence in his hometown. Suggestions on how to save youth, who largely are the victims of gun violence, were discussed at the fo-

rum sponsored by WVON, a Black-owned radio station in the Chatham community on the South Side. Panelists for the forum, “Trouble in Our House,” were Tio Hardiman, director of CeaseFire Illinois; Andrea Zopp, president and chief executive officer for the Chicago Urban League; Richard Wooten, Chicago Police Department; Che “Rhymefest” Smith, Grammyaward rapper and community activist; and Harold “Noonie G” Ward, a former gang member. Smith questioned why recently Mayor Rahm Emanuel gave $2 million to the Becoming A Man program instead of spreading the grant out to include other youth program organizations. “It does not make sense to give that amount of money to one youth organization,” Smith said. “There needs to be better accountability for how tax dollars are distributed to youth programs. We need to make sure that when an organization receives tax dollars that their programs are available in the communities most affected by violence.” According to Smith, out of the 506 homicides that occurred in Chicago last year, 200 were youth. Getting shooters into counseling was another suggestion made at the forum. “People know who the shooters are and they sit back and watch them walk out the house with a gun,” Hardiman said. “Let’s get these individuals into counseling to find out why they feel shooting and killing people is okay.” For its part, Zopp said the Chica-

A COMMUNITY FORUM sponsored by WVON Radio recently addressed violence in Chicago and included a host a community stakeholders as panelists, including left-right: Noonie Ward, community activist; Che “Rhymefest” Smith; rapper and social activist; Rev. Richard Wooten, former police officer and anti-violence advocate; Tio Hardiman, executive director Cease Fire Illinois; Andrea Zopp, executive director and CEO of the Chicago Urban League; and panel moderator Kendall Moore, WVON on-air personality go Urban League is concentrating on helping youth and ex-offenders find employment, which she said contributes to crime when people cannot find work and result to crime to support themselves. “We have to create more jobs and fix our (public) schools. These are our children out here shooting people,” explained Zopp, who also is a Chicago School Board member. “For us as a community to sit back and do nothing is simply unacceptable.” Most of the violence is due to domestic violence and 25 percent involve youth, said Ward. “But no one wants to talk about

that. When a boy sees his dad beating his mom he thinks it is normal. If youth cannot get love at home they go out on the street looking for it,” said Ward. “When a group of white kids get into a fight it is classified (by the media) as a brawl. But when Black kids fight it is gang related.” The Black community needs to step up and stop complaining, said Wooten. “We, as an African American community, have lost respect for each other. If we stop being disrespectful to ourselves we can stop other people from disrespecting us,” Wooten, a police officer and pastor said. “Churches need to open its

doors up to our youth and not wait until Sunday. Since we took God out of (public) schools, we need to introduce God to them outside of school.” One parent, Marilyn Brown, 46, said she lost her son in 2005 to gun violence and no one has ever been charged with his murder. “They murdered him in cold blood. Shot him in the head at point blank range while on his way to pick up his daughter,” recalled Brown. “I came to this forum to hear solutions we should be pursuing to spare parents the grief that comes with burying your child, and tonight I heard plenty.”

Learning how to kill for defense: an inside look at a Concealed Carry class As the state legislature begins to craft a concealed carry law as mandated by the court last year, Crusader’s J. Coyden Palmer took a first-hand look at a concealed carry course currently being taught throughout Illinois. As thousands of Illinois residents are already licensed to carry a handgun for protection in other states, the Utah and Florida classes could be the guideline legislators in Illinois use when crafting the law for this state. In this exclusive series of Crusader answers many of the concerns that those who have been against concealed carry have brought up to defend their position and sheds light on many facts that have not been reported on the subject. We will examine the course itself, the application process and report on the subject from the eyes of a longtime concealed carry instructor.

Six men and one woman from various backgrounds throughout the state sit attentively in a dojo at the

McHenry Combat Academy in Northwest McHenry County last month listening to Rick Pere explain the difference between a revolver and semi-automatic handgun; and the advantage and disadvantage to each weapon. They are students in Pere’s Utah and Florida concealed carry license class. The students are seeking the licenses in order to be able to carry a gun in every state of the union except the state they live in Illinois. But before they can accomplish that goal, they will have to sit through a six-hour course, fill-out tons of paperwork, pass an extensive background check and in some cases prove their proficiency with a handgun to their instructor. At first look, one would not take Pere as a threat let alone a gun instructor and war veteran who has killed in combat. He has a rather non-assuming appearance, a bit overweight, kind of short and a pleasant welcoming demeanor. That’s until you notice the two holsters meant to carry a .45 caliber

NEWS WITHOUT A TRACE Thousands of CPS Students “Lost” To System After More Than a Decade of School Closings The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) has serious concerns about Chicago Public Schools’ (CPS) neglect of public schools in low-income neighborhoods compared to schools in more affluent areas of the city and the number of “lost” children unaccounted for that never enrolled at a receiving school after a school closing. Since school closings and turnaround were implemented as a reform strategy for the 2001-2002 school year, thousands of Chicago children have disappeared from the school system. “Children don’t just disappear,” said CTU President Karen GJ Lewis. “So in addition to dropouts and students being transferred to underperforming schools, CPS has lost kids who aren’t showing up on the rolls at their new schools.” The union recently also responded to a study released by the University of Chicago Consortium on Chicago School Research that showed changes in the student population at schools that were subject to Chicago Public Schools (CPS) reform. The study found that while the research is valuable in identifying models that do work for Chicago’s children, in order to be effective, the Consortium needs more time to study the mechanisms behind mass education reform. “There’s no magic bullet here,” Lewis said. “It’s all part of a process and everything takes time.” The report, “Turning Around Low-Performing Schools in Chicago,” examined the effects of school actions on neighborhood poverty,

minority neighborhoods. “We have seen the effects of misleading the public with a manufactured crisis, and they are forcing people into false choices,” Lewis said. “The fact is that they are continuing to disinvest in schools and disinvest in communities.” The CTU believes that some turnaround models can be effective in terms of additional staff and lower student-to-teacher ratios. These schools, however, perform better because they are cited as priorities by CPS and receive resources and the attention to transformation and professional development that other schools do

Karen Lewis special education, racial composition, student retention and other factors. It also provided details on changes in teacher workforce at each of the schools that underwent reform, and in an update to an original brief issued in February 2012, introduced a new section on schools closed for underutilization. The report’s new section on underutilization shows that in the majority of the cases, the buildings closed housed new magnet or charter schools after a few years. Schools that opened in these buildings also served students from neighborhoods that were farther away from the school and less disadvantaged than the neighborhoods students came from before closure. A “utilization crisis” is the justification CPS has provided for closing hordes of schools in Chicago’s

not. “Why not add these resources to pre-existing schools,” Lewis said. “We’ve never had that.” The Chicago Teachers Union represents 30,000 teachers and educational support personnel working in the Chicago Public Schools and, by extension, the students and families they serve. CTU, an affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers and the Illinois Federation of Teachers, is the third largest teachers local in the country and the largest local union in Illinois. Learning how to kill for defense . . . (Continued from page 2) part of again. But Pere understands how dangerous the United States has become and why he keeps getting customers from ordinary single mothers to executive men from the suburbs looking to protect their family and who have no previous experience with guns. He is committed to teaching qualified, legal citizens how just not to survive a lethal encounter, but to come out victorious. Pere agreed to have the Crusader come in and report on his course first-hand because he believes the mainstream media and Chicago area politicians have been lying about the issue of concealed carry to citizens, especially to African Americans in poor urban areas. Pere said Black people who live

Davis and Dwain Kyles, son of civil rights leader Rev. Samuel “Billy” Kyles, were acquitted of involuntary manslaughter charges in Nov. of 2009, but were found guilty of indirect criminal contempt for violating the previous orders to close the entire second floor of the club and were sentenced to two years in prison. However, in 2011, the previous rulings were overturned when a judge ruled that the orders to close down the second floor were ambiguous. The city is appealing that decision to the Illinois Supreme Court. In the meantime, those who were there that night and those who lost friends and family said after all this time, the pain is still there and the best they can do is try to honor the memory of those who did not survive and comfort each other. “We’ve got to keep moving for-

ward to try to make sure that this doesn’t happen again anywhere else, because it can happen,” said Ken Ray, who lost his brother aspiring sports broadcaster and FedEx employee DaShand Ray. Sheretta Patterson-Pennington is one of several plaintiffs who sued the City, the club owners and the promoter of the event that night. She is now raising her daughter’s son Angelo, who was three years old at the time of his mother’s death, Nicole Patterson. While the suit is still pending like all of the others, she said it is not her primary focus. She said in the years since her daughter’s passing, she found it was in a sense killing her as well. So instead she focused her energies not in her daughter’s death, but in her grandson’s life. “For my own sanity and peace of mind, I’ve just had to move forward,” she said, clutching onto a photo of Nicole. “I couldn’t

In memoriam of the victims, 21 balloons were released at exactly 2:24 a.m., the time the fight began inside the club. Additionally, 21 white crosses with the names of those who died were erected outside the building and will remain there for a few weeks. Dozens of flowers have already been placed at the site and many of those driving by in their cars honk their horns in support. One woman, who just happened to be walking by and saw all of the people gathered, asked what was going on. When told about the vigil she said, “I can’t believe it’s been 10 years already. It seems like that was just yesterday.”

or work in dangerous areas are vulnerable and the ones who need guns to protect themselves the most yet they’ve been mentally programmed by years of anti-gun campaigns and inaccurate rhetoric from community pastors, media personalities and city leaders pushing their own agendas. He also said the failure to educate the African American community about how a gun functions, safe handling, storaging of the weapon and how to effectively use the tool to defend has had disastrous results. The first thing I was taught by Pere had nothing to do with a gun itself, however. Instead the first 90 minutes of the six-hour course deals with learning the law and filling out the mass amounts of paperwork required for background checks during the application process. Pere teaches his students that just because you may be granted a concealed carry license it does not make you a police officer or Superman. He said the best thing to do when possible is to disengage, even if that means “running like a coward.” His comment gave me pause as I reflected on what Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said to me recently on WVON 1690 AM. McCarthy insisted and has stated on at least two other occasions since then concealed carry holders will be putting themselves at risk of being shot by his officers. His comments were rebuked by concealed carry holders and by others in the law enforcement community. But his comment still stuck in my mind that a Chicago police officer coming upon a scene with two or more people shooting is not going to know who the bad guy is. Pere, one of those critical of McCarthy, said everyone needs to understand that when a uniformed officer arrives on the scene they are in charge and it is critical that people follow the officer’s instructions. All concealed carry classes teach disengagement over deploying Saturday, February 23, 2013

and firing your weapon, according to Pere. The same reasonable force standards for police officers when they use their weapons are the same standards for concealed carry holders in every state. “Sometimes the best thing you can do is to be a good witness,” Pere says. “Once you engage in a gunfight, in addition to risking your life and the lives of others, you also are going to have to deal with the legal ramifications that follow and you will be highly scrutinized.” Pere got his point across by showing us graphic videos of actual gunfights on the streets of the United States. The murder of a man inside a Wal-Mart store caught on surveillance video in front of dozens of people drove the point home for me. “Why would you get involved in this? What good can you do in this situation?” I had to ask myself. However, my perception changed when a different scenario was shown as I watched the video of a man with his wife and family in tow being slaughtered by thugs during a robbery. Pere teaches that if you or your loved ones are under an imminent threat of attack of which you cannot escape, you must know how to handle your weapon properly, quickly and with deadly accuracy. He said this is why concealed carry classes and subsequent training classes are so valuable for citizens. He explained how to shoot into the torso of the attacker with multiple rounds to stop the body’s pumping station, showing a diagram of the human body that highlighted preferred target areas. He said the one thing you can expect to happen when a person is shot is nothing at all. I found myself at times during the class imagining different scenarios and which situations I would deploy my weapon and fight and which times I would merely tuck tail and run. Part two of the series will appear in the March 2 issue of the Chicago Crusader 3

OPINION

EDITORIAL BLACK HISTORY AND “ANTI-SELF DISORDER” The month of February is set aside to celebrate the contributions made by Black people to America and to the world. These contributions are felt far and wide, and are deserving of accolades. Even though this is the case, events in the Black community today warrant a re-thinking of the set aside of just one month to honor these contributions. Indeed, every day should celebrate the Black community and its awesome legacy. Unfortunately, African Americans (and others) are too often focused on the ills of the community and these tend to outweigh the positive aspects. For example, the community is currently under siege by a cohort of mindless, clueless individuals who think that it is alright to kill people indiscriminately, if they are Black, and if they accidentally shoot and kill someone other than the target of their ire, there is an "Oh well" attitude. This harsh and inhumane approach to life is appalling and frightening. People are racking their brains to come up with solutions to this problem of Black-on-Black mayhem, but so far, nothing has really worked. Even President Obama's magic is no cure-all. Activists have been jumping up and down demanding that he visit his home town of Chicago, IL in order to bring attention to the violence there. Recently, a 15-year-old honor student who had performed with her high school at the President's inauguration was shot and killed just a mile from the president's residence. The president swooped into town and spoke to students at a Chicago Public High School about the violence as well as other issues. Within a day of his departure, at least 5 other people were shot! Now, what does this have to do with Black History? It is this: Black people have been vilified, ostracized, criticized and otherwise maimed by a history of oppression in America and around the world to such an extent that it has resulted in a distorted version of the "Stockholm Syndrome" wherein many Black people express sympathy and empathy and hold their oppressors in high esteem. Conversely, it has also resulted in abject self-hatred which is seen throughout the community, from vermin infested ghettos to residents of well-kept, affluent Black enclaves. In other words, there is a collective "Anti-Self Disorder" (ASD) that is evident everywhere in the Black community. This can really be seen in the case where Blacks killed by Blacks receive scant attention, (until the recent killing of Hadiya Pendleton in Chicago), but are totally up in arms when a white person kills a Black person (i.e., the Trayvon Martin killing). In other words, Black life is only valuable if it is taken by a white person. This ASD attitude can also be seen in the ubiquitous use of the term "Nigger" among Blacks. This is truly a sad state of affairs, especially in light of the fact that Black people have excelled in every endeavor that has been attempted. But there is an irony even in this regard, in that many Black achievers are literally hated by other Blacks, especially if they look Black. Think Oprah Winfrey, Whoopi Goldberg, or Leslie Uggams (who was nicknamed Leslie "Ugly" at one time). It is past the time that we sugar coat the problem of Black selfhatred, because it is most likely the main cause of Black-onBlack violence. If we are not able to solve this problem in a timely manner, the Black community itself will BECOME HISTORY! A luta continua.

I can easily remember when the City of Gary was a booming town. That was during the times when people who worked in the steel plants pulled in overtime at will and the city was full of hard-working laborers who were earning more than their college-educated counterparts. Even though I am a Chicago resident, it pains me to see how Gary has fallen over the years. But I also am heartened that the city seems to be struggling a little less, thanks to new leadership. I also am encouraged that Gary seems to be getting more and more favorable attention. A few months ago Rev. Jesse Jackson had a “Gary Day” at Operation PUSH. That Saturday put the city in a positive spotlight in front of what may have been a new audience, including radio fans of the show. More recently though Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart convened a violence summit in Gary. Dart didn’t have to cross state lines and get involved. But his presence in Gary caused others, including federal attention to get involved and begin the discussion on how to help Gary with its gun trafficking and overall violence problem. The sheriff in my opinion is setting the example for the kind of cooperation that is sorely needed on both sides of the Indiana border. It isn’t costing the county or Chicago a thing to be involved in Gary. In a

sense, Tom Dart is paying it forward – the knowledge and expertise he has isn’t duplicated in Gary or Lake County. Nobody knows how effective the Dart summit will be, if it is at all successful. But we all know that had he and the others just sat on their hands we would be further, not closer to solving some serious crime issues. There is nothing to say that while the sheriff is in Gary that he can’t pick up some new strategies or tips on how to have a greater impact in Chicago. I don’t see any harm in his visit; at the same time I didn’t see the benefit. OK, the President has been here now what? Dear Editor: Thousands of Chicagoans are delighted that President Barack Obama graced the city with his presence and message of how to advance America over the next four years. After Chicagoans and others requested the president’s presence; petitioned for it, and then demanded it he decided to come home-possibly reluctantly. Some people said they believe his words might give the young killers and shooters roaming our streets pause, and cause them to change their ways, or at least think about it. Others maintained Mr. Obama could have avoided the city all to-

BEYOND THE RHETORIC

The Evil Ways of Environmentalists By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist The Environmental Movement has been around since the days of naturalist John Muir (late 19th century) who is the founder of the Sierra Club. Back then it had high credibility and did great work to promote and preserve our natural beauty such as national parks, lakes and rivers. Sometime in the 1950’s it started straying into scare tactics. A popular claim was Global Cooling – we were going to freeze to death via our polluting ways. Then it turned to the opposite claim of global warming after a few warm years. President Nixon used this cause to divert our attention from the Civil Rights Movement and the anti-war furor over Vietnam. He proclaimed Earth Day as an annual event and enlarged the Environmental Bureau into a separate agency, The Environment Protection Agency, EPA. This worked and today the EPA has become one of the most meddling entities in the federal government. It is a friend of the environmentalists and is often used as a weapon for their advocacy. Under the Clinton Administra-

Harry C. Alford tion the environmentalists started an outrageous claim. They accused corporate America of seeking Black communities to dump their waste, poison the water and render the land toxic. They summed it up by calling the mythical activity “Environmental Racism” and persuaded (funded) local civil rights groups to join in the fight and demand “Environmental Justice.” This died down after about ten years. One of the current activities of the environmentalists is the assault on

coal. They want to kill the coal industry. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg donated $50 million to the Sierra Club for the sole purpose of killing off our coal industry. Right now they have the EPA planning to shut down over 31 coal fired utility plants by way of a “Rule.” Rules are like executive orders whereby it avoids congressional approval. With the blessing of the President they just do it as if it were voted legislation. This will wreck our economy and destroy our personal worth if we don’t fight back and stop the action. Think of the many thousands of jobs that will be lost and the rising cost of electricity we will all be stuck with. Another tactic by the environmentalists is a legal proceeding known as “Sue and Settle.” This is done by collusion between the environmentalists and pro-environmentalist bureaucrats. These groups will file a massive lawsuit against the EPA, Department of Interior, Bureau of Land Management, Fish and Wildlife Services, etc. The problem is the “deal” has already been made. Thus, the agency being sued will quickly sit down and settle with the environmentalists. In the end, it is like a wish list for the suing

environmentalists as the federal agency gives them just about everything they want. According to Marita Noon, Executive Director, Energy Makes America Great Inc., “In 2011, the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) entered into a massive settlement of a lawsuit filed by environmental groups in which the agency promised to address more than 250 candidate species it had previously found warranted protection but were precluded from listing due to a backlog. As a part of the behind-closed-door agreement, the FWS also pledged to review hundreds more species proposed for listing.” According to Senator David Vitter (R-LA), “It is the sueand-settle agreements. This future regulation could prohibit many beneficial uses of tens of millions of acres of private property. All this was set in motion while no affected landowner or other stakeholder was given any opportunity for input.” You can’t “break ground” on land that houses a registered endangered species – factual or not. Just like that millions of acres will be denied any development or growth. Economic opportunities and millions of jobs will be put on “ice” so that the environmentalists can have their way.

This sue-and-settle racket is growing in use and we and Congress must stop this mockery. In effect, it is a conspiracy to behave in such a matter within the court of law. The National Black Chamber of Commerce spends an inordinate amount of time fighting these environmentalists who come after our communities in so many ways. They lie, cheat and deceive in so many ways. Internationally, they have a collective treasury of over $8 billion to push their agenda. What is that agenda? To stop growth and positive change as Commerce is their enemy. Jobs, commodities, manufacturing, etc. are bitter items to them. Funny, most of these groups are made up of very wealthy people who got their wealth through plain American style capitalism. They now want to prevent the rest of the population from having a chance to do the same. They will continue their evil ways and we will continue to fight them. Free Enterprise is our mission. Lil Wayne Insults the Memory of Emmett Till By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist The murder of 14-year-old Emmett Till in 1955 was a watershed moment, marking the beginning of the modern Civil Rights Movement. While visiting relatives near Money, Miss., the Chicago native was murdered for allegedly whistling at a white woman. The brutal act was intended to send an unmistakable message to Black boys everywhere: If you even whistle at a white woman in the Deep South, you could pay for it with your life. Like everyone else, I was appalled to learn that rapper Lil Wayne had made a vulgar reference to Till’s death. On a re-mix of an upcoming CD by Future called “Karate Chop,” Lil Wayne essentially spewed the line: “Beat that [female sex organ] up like Emmett Till.” When I sat down to write this column, I planned to excoriate Little Wayne about his insult. I started to remind him that musical artists don’t have to be ignorant fools, even while showing their underwear on stage. I was going to say that Curtis Mayfield of my era and Chuck D of his generation demonstrated that African-American artists can make good music and provide uplifting race-conscious lyrics at The Chicago Crusader

the same time. Rather than spend another nanosecond on Lil Wayne, we should use this Black History Month moment to educate young people who may not have ever heard of Emmett Till. While serving as editor of Emerge magazine, I had the pleasure of interviewing Mrs. Mamie Till Mobley, Emmett’s mother. For the 40th anniversary of his death in 1995, I wrote a story on Emmett Till. This is how it began: Mamie Till Bradley was about to experience a mother’s worst nightmare. She had to identify the corpse of her only child, 14-year-old Emmett Till, who had been abducted, beaten, shot in the head and tossed into the Tallahatchie River near Greenwood, Miss., for allegedly whistling at a white woman. As she approached the cold, metal slab that held the mutilated body at A. A. Rayner & Sons funeral home in Chicago, the grieving mother thought to herself: “I got a job to do and it’s not going to be easy.” Mamie Till wanted to look directly into her son’s face, but she couldn’t bring herself to do it. Not yet. So she started with the lower extremities and worked her way up. “Those are his feet,” she concluded. The ankles? Yes, those were her son’s skinny ankles. Next, she surveyed the knees. Most people have sharp, pointed kneecaps. But the

George E. Curry mother and son had flat ones. “Those are the Till knees,” she told herself. Her eyes continued up her son’s body and stopped on his genitals. Later, she would be happy that her inspection included that section of her son’s body because some people later would say, incorrectly, that Emmett had been castrated. Now, she would know otherwise. Mrs. Mamie Till Bradley Mobley — who will be called Mrs. Till hereafter to make it easier to follow the cast of characters in this drama — examined Emmett’s hands and arms, which provided more confirmation of what she did not want confirmed. Finally, she took a deep breath and looked at her son’s decomposed face. This, too, she did piece by piece, separating his face into imaginary compartments, starting with his chin and moving

to the top of his head. “Bo,” as he was known, had flashed a perfect set of teeth during his short life. Now, in death, only one or two were visible. “Oh, my God,” his mother thought. “Where are the rest of them?” The bridge of his nose, though all chopped up, was recognizable. She looked for his right eye — it was missing. There was only an empty socket. She looked at the left one and it was detached, dangling from the socket. “That’s his hazel eye,” Mrs. Till said. “Where is the other one?” She searched for one ear and it, too, was missing. Peering through the ear hole, she could see daylight on the other side. The remaining ear protruded from her son’s head, just like hers— another family trait. “That’s Emmett’s ear,” she said, softly. His hair? Yes. After inspecting the outstretched body inch by inch, Mrs. Till came to the sad but inescapable conclusion that the remains of what remained before her were those of Emmett Louis Till. Still, she turned to Gene Mobley, later to become her third husband, hoping he might have noticed something that she had not, anything that would cast the slightest doubt about whether this was indeed Bo. But Mobley had identified young Till in his mind long before the child’s mother Saturday, February 23, 2013

had finished her methodical examination. The barber had recognized the haircut he had given Emmett two weeks earlier, just before Bo left for Mississippi. Mrs. Till had one thought over and over: What kind of person could do this to another human being, especially a 14–year–old boy? Her second thought was that this was a sight so ghastly, so inhumane that people would have to see it for themselves to believe it. “Gene, I want you to go home and get some of Bo’s pictures,” she said. “We’ll spread the pictures around.” The undertaker politely asked, “Do you want me to fix him up?” Mrs. Till did not hesitate: “No, you can’t fix that. Let the world see what I saw.” Obviously, Lil Wayne never saw that story. If he had, he would have realized this isn’t something to be taken lightly. George E. Worrill’s World By Dr. Conrad W. Worrill

DAMAGE OF THE AFRICAN MIND AND DR. BOBBY WRIGHT (Dr. Conrad Worrill, National Chairman Emeritus of the National Black United Front (NBUF), located at 1809 East 71st Street, Suite 211, Chicago, Illinois, 60649, 773-493-0900, Fax# 773-493-9819, E-mail: nbufchic@sbcglobal.net, Web site: nbufront.org)

Dr. Conrad Worrill So many of the problems that African people face in the world today are due to the assault on our minds by those who captured us and removed significant numbers of us to the Western Hemisphere.

This also included the mind damage caused by the tampering of African lands and culture on the continent of Africa. Most African people in America are aware that our minds were tampered with as a result of our forced capture and enslavement in America. The impact of this process is central to the international component of the Reparations Movement that we must focus on, and that is the “Repair of Ourselves” at the same time we demand reparations from the government and private corporations who benefited from our enslavement and still benefit today. Examining and reexamining the contributions of the late Dr. Bobby Wright provides a significant source we can utilize in addressing our “internal reparations” challenges. The contributions of the late Dr. Bobby E. Wright in helping us assess this problem should be a continuous part of our study, and reflection, as we struggle to break the psychological chains of white supremacy. Four years before Dr. Wright’s untimely death he wrote a profound article entitled, “Mentacide: The Ultimate Threat To The Black Race.” In defining “Mentacide,”

Dr. Wright explains that it is “the deliberate and systematic destruction of a person’s or group’s mind [which] may give a clue to why the Black race, after developing such an advanced civilization, has for the last 400 years been assisting in it own destruction and the nearly total subjugation of Africa by foreign invaders.” In an earlier work, written in 1975 by Dr. Wright, entitled The Psychopathic Racial Personality, he stated that in the relationships of whites with Blacks “whites exhibit the behavior of psychopaths and their behavior reflects an underlying biologically transmitted proclivity that is rooted deep in their evolutionary history.” Dr. Wright says, “Mentacide is the ultimate goal of the behavior.” Any cursory examination of history will bear out, and support, the following “incomparable traits” of the white race (Europeans) that Dr. Wright reveals in terms of 1) Predatory behavior toward people and their land, 2) A predilection for senseless destruction of nature and people, and 3) The ability to persuade Blacks to support and protect them against their own interest.” These key points described by Dr. Wright concerning the contin-

ued oppressive psychological condition of African people in the world indicates to me that our biggest challenge as a people is that of Getting Our Minds Straight and Stopping Mentacide! Getting Our Minds Straight requires that African people begin to relearn the African principle that renowned historian Dr. Anderson Thompson has been discussing for the last twenty plus years. According to Dr. Thompson, the “African Principle represents those standards, rules, laws, and customs which guide our behavior and which serve as the foundation for all of our action.” Dr. Thompson continues by explaining that the African Principle “is the quality underlying the source of the African value system. The gift from our Creator passes on to us through our ancestors.” At this juncture in history, we as African people have the capacity to, Straighten Our Own Minds Out, without the help of anyone outside the African Community. It must be understood that Africa and African people have been under siege for more that 2,000 years by Europeans, Asians, and Arabs. The invasions, intrusions, thefts, murders, pillaging, and the decimation and destruction of African

lands, bodies, minds, and spirits over these 2,000 years is the basis for our on-going struggle for African Liberation worldwide. In our efforts to Straighten Out Our Minds, the following revelation by Dr. Wright should be understood, and internalized, by all African people. Dr. Wright reveals that, “It is very clear that the Europeans have developed a method whose basic purpose is to replace all indigenous cultures with their own… Therefore, the Europeans, without any historical precedent, went forth into the civilized world and began to impose their cultures on others, mainly through religion, literacy modalities and military force.” All roads lead to our unity. We must work together in organizing and mobilizing African people in America. All of our organizing strategies must lead to Getting Our Minds Straight and Stopping Mentacide. Without this occurring, we will continue in our present state of mental stagnation and servitude to other people. STATE OF THE UNION HITS HIGH MARKS I was among the 33.5 million people who sat riveted to their televisions, parsing every second of the State of the Union Address. I was stunned to learn, through a Washington Post article by Lisa De Moraes, that viewership was less substantial for this address than last year’s 38 million, and even lower than the 48 million that watched in 2010. Are people less interested in what our President has to say? Or is there something else going on? In any case, from my perspective this was an important and significant SOTU address. Unleashed from the pressure of re-election, and able to set forth a progressive and aggressive agenda, President Obama dealt with some of the key issues that face our nation. He was able to utter the word “poverty” without his tongue freezing up. Unfortunately, he is unable to utter the words “Black” or “African American.” Still, President Obama laid out an agenda that will ultimately have a positive effect on the African American community, especially if some of his efforts are targeted. In 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King

said, "The curse of poverty has no justification in our age. It is socially as cruel and blind as the practice of cannibalism at the dawn of civilization, when men ate each other because they had not yet learned to take from soil or to consume the abundant animal life around them. The time has come for us to civilize ourselves by the total, direct and immediate abolition of poverty." President Obama was not so direct, nor so cutting. But he offered important clarity to an issue his ad-

ministration has ignored heretofore. While focusing on the middle class, he also noted that people should not work full time and still earn a wage that puts them beneath the poverty line. His advocacy for a minimum wage of $9 per hour, or about $18,000 a year for a single worker who might support a family was a significant move forward for the poor. Missing – a conversation about poor people and health benefits, and about the employers who refuse to employ people full time so that they can avoid paying benefits. Obamacare will cover many of these employees, but the fact that profitable companies would rather offer a worker 22 hours than 30 to save money is reprehensible. The State of the Union address is not an opportunity to drill down on every issue, so I very much understand that President Obama could not offer details to the many proposals he raised in SOTU. Still, it was refreshing to hear the President talk about poverty, about women’s work and wages, and about issues of equality. The first legislation that President Obama signed was the Lily Ledbetter Act, which dealt with equal pay issues. Without acknowl-

edging race in any of these conversations, the fact is African American women (and Latinas) are at the bottom of the pay scale. Advocating equal pay and dealing with issues of poverty, and implementing solutions, improves the material conditions of women at the bottom. President Obama discussed infrastructure improvements in his 2008 campaign. Partisan bickering has made it difficult for him to work with states to refurbish, as he says, 70,000 bridges, as well as roads and highways. The last time our nation paid attention to these structural issues was in the 1950s when President Eisenhower, in a job-creation move, built federal highways around our nation to facilitate easy transportation. Have you driven on an interstate highway lately? Whether you are Democrat or Republican, we should all agree that these highways (some called pot hole central) need improvement? Some politicians are so willing to undermine the Obama administration that they are also willing to see our nation become dysfunctional. The two emotional high points in this speech included the shout out to the 102-year-old woman who

waited all day to vote, and the call for gun reform, mentioning victims by name. I was most moved by the family of Hadiya Pendleton, who sat with First Lady Michelle Obama, who attended their daughter’s funeral. They are not only important as parents of a gun violence victim, but as proxies for the more than 500 people shot in Chicago in the last year or so. It was also moving to see former Congresswoman Gabby Gifford, unable to clap, who brought her hands together. The President’s comments got a standing O, but as soon as the President’s speech was over, thirsty vultures (like Senator Rubio) ran to the media to voice opposition. The President has offered an ambitious agenda, and one that will improve the lot of all Americans. While I chafe at his failure to mention African Americans, I am excited by proposals to close the wealth gap. His agenda won’t be implemented unless we advocate for it. What will you do to move it forward? Julianne Malveaux is a Washington, DC based economist and author. The Chicago Crusader

THE CHATTERBOX dey would make this request for The Associated Press, Fox News alright . . . When do we have control over anything that affect Black folks? If we can’t be represented at a Black funeral, we might as well kick the butts we need to and Ima is taking off her gloves and her friends are holding her hat. So look for the truth to be told here about the end of racial prejudice now that we have a “Black” President. Enough is enough!!!

TARGET DAY JUNE 28 Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. will know his fate on June 28, The Jackson Family, including Senior, Mama Jackson and all, accompanied Junior to court Wednesday where he pleaded guilty. Most folk on the home front are still in shock about the $750,000 they spent of campaign funds. Ima says that if they be saying $750,000 it probably was a lot more. One commentator on television said it was pure greed. Ima can’t really disagree with that, nor can I disagree about his arrogance. What made my publisher hit the ceiling was the fact that he

John McCain kivver is off him now. He is po’ed with Chuck Hagel, his former friend and he made no bones about it at his confirmation hearing. But before that he attacked Susan Rice and caused her to withdraw from consideration with the help of the lukewarm support she got from the President. The President talked a good game, but we know when we are fighting from the sidelines when we see it. Now McCain got his butt kicked at a town hall meeting in his own home. Ima is wondering when dese folks are going to realize that the American people are sick and tired of the Tea Party, the only say NO Republicans, including a Vietnam Prisoner of War such as McCain. McCain is disgracing himself. He had better get with it, Ima could move to Arizona and be the margin of victory for an opponent of McCain’s (he, he, he).

-ImaHE CAME AND THE KILLING DIDN’T STOP!!! Well, the President came. All of the elite was present at Hyde Park High School (er ‘cuse me, Academy) last week, but the killing has continued. It is a sad situation

-ImaCOMING NEXT WEEK . . . Look for Ima to talk a bit about the right Reverend Leon Finney who continues to walk among the free for awful crimes against Black people, young and old alike. How does he continue to be on the outside?

President Barack Obama that has taken over our communities and our young people are unsafe. There are a bunch who have no ambition, no goals and they are killing the cream of the crop in many instances. It is high time the real men come forward and take these punks on. Is Father Pfleger the only Black man willing to fight fire with fire? Oh, Ima forgot Father ain’t Black.

Jesse Jackson, Jr. did not spend one dime in advertising during the 17 years he was in Congress Well, not with the Black Press. He ran at least 8 times during those years. Now we ‘spose to be sad? Ima is sad because a bright future was ahead of what most folks was calling a “power couple” just went down the tubes. Ima wants the yunguns to realize that lying does not pay and de Bible says “money is the root of all evil.” This is a case in point.

Most folks did not realize how bitter John McCain was after his defeat by President Obama in the 2008 presidential race, but the

Associated Press, New York Times, and lawd have mercy Fox TV, but according to someone in the White House dey said the decision was made by the family. Claim all of your Credits and Deductions this Tax Season By Charlene Crowell NNPA Columnist When W-2 forms begin arriving in the mail, it’s a sure sign that tax season has again returned. This year, however, there will be a slight delay for tax filers. Due to the lateness of tax law changes made by Congress, IRS will begin processing returns on January 30. This date will apply regardless of whether tax returns are e-filed or on paper. The consumer benefit from this brief delay means tax filers have more time to identify and include every available credit. Depending upon family income, size and filing status, several tax credits can boost refunds – especially among low- and moderate- income households. Applying every eligible tax credit will maximize refunds. For example, although four out of five workers are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), IRS advises that one out of four fails to claim the credit for one of two reasons. Either they failed to file a tax return at all, or filed one, but failed to claim what they were due. In 2011, 27 million eligible

workers received a total of $62 billion in EITCs, making it the largest tax program for working families, according to the Office of the Controller of the Currency (OCC). This year, workers earning $50,270 or less can apply for EITC. The exact amount of EITC eligibility will vary by income, family size and filing status. Even so, last year the average EITC credit was $2,200, according to IRS. This year, IRS expects that workers, the self-employed and farmers that qualify for this credit could receive even higher refunds. Another key tax credit is the American Opportunity Credit, designed to financially assist parents and students to pay for college expenses. Either individual filers with modified adjusted gross income of $80,000 or less, or married filers with a joint return earning $160,000 or less are eligible to apply. The maximum amount of the annual credit is $2,500 per student, not per family. Eligibility for this tax credit can cover up to four years of post-secondary education. For consumers of any age pursuing post-secondary education, a Lifetime Learning Credit can help

The Chicago Crusader

Charlene Crowell with that cost. Up to $2,000 in qualified, paid educational expenses can be claimed when enrolled in an eligible educational institution. There is an important caveat to claiming this credit: filers can claim either the Lifetime Learning Credit or the American Opportunity Credit; but never both. Additionally, the Lifetime Learning Credit has no limit on the number of years it can be claimed for each student. With so many consumers struggling with student loan debt, tax

season also offers a tax deduction on paid student loan interest. If a filer’s modified adjusted gross income is less than $75,000 or less than $150,000 for joint returns, a special deduction is allowed for voluntary and required interest payments. IRS advises that this tax deduction can reduce the amount of income subject to taxation by as much as $2,500. Here’s one last cost-saving tip for tax season: Utilize the free tax assistance services in your area. In many instances, there is no reason for consumers to pay the high-cost fees charged by tax services. IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is available to any worker making $51,000 or less.

These IRS-certified volunteers can help filers to determine all eligible credits and/or deductions. Interested consumers are asked to phone 1-800-906-9887 to determine the closest local assistance center. AARP Foundation Tax Aid offers free assistance through more than 6,000 locations nationwide to consumers aged 60 or over. Trinity offers unique observance of Black History Month In celebration of Black History Month, African History Month,” Trinity United Church of Christ (Trinity UCC) of Chicago is remembering the African ancestors who died and survived the MAAFA, the holocaust of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Trinity UCC’s Worship and Arts Ministry has converted the pulpit to symbolize the schooner Amistad, the ship that was transporting African slaves around the island of Cuba in 1839. The enslaved Africans broke free, liberated the small vessel and was traveling back to Africa but they were captured by the US Revenue Brig Washington off the coast of Long Island, charged with mutiny, and threatened with being returned to slavery. Within the context of the history of the Congregationalist Church which is one of the churches that com-

Transforming our worship service to include the languages of ancestors in Ghana, the Caribbean, the Carolinas and New Orleans — we feel like we are apart of the ancestors. We get to use all of our senses; eyes, ears, noise, hands and everyone, our church members and visitors can watch and actually feel it and touch it. Children want to and can put their hands on a rendering of a slave ship. They don’t have to only depend on what Pastor Moss describes, they can touch it. Cristian Macelaru and Asher Fisch to replace ailing Pierre Boulez at CSO Pierre Boulez, Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Helen Regenstein Conductor Emeritus, has reluctantly had to withdraw from his scheduled appearances with the CSO in March on the advice of his personal physicians. Cristian Macelaru, associate conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra, leads the CSO on Thursday, March 7 at 8 p.m.; Saturday, March 9 at 8 p.m.; and Tuesday, March 12 at 7:30 p.m. Macelaru leads a slightly changed program, with Bartók’s Divertimento for String Orchestra replacing Messiaen’s “Chronochromie.” The rest of the program is unchanged: Debussy’s “Prelude to The Afternoon of a Faun,” Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with Yefim Bronfman, and Stravinsky’s “The Song of the Nightingale.” Cristian Macelaru made his South Shore Cultural Center debut April 15, 2012 conducting the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the training orchestra of the CSO, in a free community concert that included Brahm’s Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68. dedicated to commissioning, performing and recording contemporary creative and classical music of new composers. The mission of the orchestra is to excite and encourage new audiences with their own brand of “out-of-the-box” programming. CMOP’s mission and commitment is to seek out original scores from all genres of music, with an emphasis on living composers, that might not appeal to most symphony orchestras. CMOP Artistic Director Baker, in describing the program, states “Society has long held the romantic idea of an artist/creator as a solitary person. Bringing together creative music, classical music, dance, vocalists and jazz, the Chicago Modern Orchestra Project encourages the active chatter between medium and genre.” Renée Baker is a composer, conductor, violinist and violist. She has been at the extreme forefront of creative and avant-garde music since 1991 while developing CMOP. Utilizing some of the finest musicians that cross the classical world as well as jazz greats, she has crafted a group of the best traditionalists and married them to dedicated improvisers. Her

skills as a conductor and musiciancoordinator have been used by some of the finest musical organizations in Chicago including Nicole Mitchell’s Black Earth Strings. Baker’s musical affiliations, in addition to the Black Earth Orchestra, include David Boykin Expanse, Orbert Davis w/Strings Attached, Doug Carn, Karl Siegfried’s Galaxy String Quartet, Great Black Music Ensemble (AACM), Chicago Jazz Philharmonic and the Chicago Jazz Orchestra. Ms. Baker is Artistic Director of the Chicago Sinfonietta Chamber Ensemble as well as Mantra Blue Free Orchestra and is known as the principal violist of the internationally acclaimed Chicago Sinfonietta.

A new road to Pullman Park (Cont’d from page 1) the 270-acre Pullman Park development that will include a Supercenter Walmart, affordable housing, a hotel, park, and a new school, according to Beale. The Walmart Super Center is expected to open by yearend. The South Side alderman said by creating more jobs it would ultimately help reduce violence, which he said is sparked in part by frustrated people unable to find employment. Quinn agreed. “It’s important that folks have an opportunity to work in their community,” added Quinn. “If you’re able-bodied and you’re breathing, we want you working.” One main purpose for WalThe Chicago Crusader

mart recruited as the anchor tenant for the project, said Beale, is its ability to address the food desert that exists in the area. “Where do we go for lunch? Where do we go for dinner? Just to have a nice night out?” Beale asked. “We have to go outside our community. When you spend a dollar inside our community, it circulates for three to four hours, and it’s gone. Now, when you spend a dollar inside our community, that dollar circulates three to four weeks.” Having access to quality food is something every community should have available, added Quinn. “Unfortunately, right now, this [Pullman] is a food desert, and we’re not going to tolerate that,” Quinn said.

“We want to make sure that everyone has access to good food, fresh food.” The Far South Side community is made up of 87,827 people and 94. 8 percent are Black while only 2.6 percent are white, according to census data. And complimenting the upcoming Pullman Park development is the Millennium Reserve, which began in 2011. The MR project, which is expected to boost green space in Chicago, will convert industrial wasteland along Lake Calumet into space safe for recreation and outdoor exploration. According to Quinn, MR is the largest open space project in the country and will enhance public recreation

opportunities in 140,000 acres of land in the Calumet region, which runs through the Roseland community. “The Millennium Reserve will expand the amount of green space in the Chicago area by more than 140,000 acres and give families living in our largest urban area more opportunities for outdoor recreation,” explained Quinn. “This important project will convert an industrial area into valuable open space that gives area families a place to gather, play and experience the great outdoors.” Phase One includes Indian Ridge Marsh, a 145-acre site where officials hope to improve aquatic, wetland and woodland areas, build recreational trails, create new habitats and preserve a

breeding ground for the endangered black crowned night heron. As part of the MS, Calumet Core phase, Quinn said the

state would kick in $17.9 million from the Illinois Jobs Now! capital program to improve recreational facilities in the area.

A Good Day To Die Hard A Review by: Bonnie DeShong John McClane (Bruce Willis) finds out that his estranged, bad boy son Jack (Jai Courtney) is in trouble. In fact, he is locked up in a Russian prison. Even though they haven’t spoken or seen each other in a while, John takes off to Russia to save his son and try to get him on the right track. He gets to Jack just in time to see him escaping from

the court with a prisoner in tow. In true McClane style, John spoils the precision getaway which causes a major chase scene, shoot out, cars rolling over, a tank driving off a bridge, and a whole lot more. Along the way he learns that Jack is actually working undercover to protect and get information from Komarov (Sebastian Koch) a prisoner who has a very important file that everyone wants. Father and son team up to save Ko-

marov, retrieve the file, and get out of Russia safe and sound, or not. Things change when Jack takes John on a father son vacation to Chernobyl. You’ll get it once you see the film. This 5th installment of the Die Hard series doesn’t disappoint. There is more than enough unbelievable stunts, a plot twister or two, and just enough humor to make the film enjoyable. Ladies this is a film that you and your fella

ENTERTAINMENT: CHICAGO STYLE (Cont’d from page 12) in some of the very communities to which the exhibit will visit. Diversity and showcasing the city of Chicago as a “melting pot” is a common thread within the exhibit that is appreciated by another supporter, the Allstate Corporation. “Allstate has a long history of supporting diverse communities, and the partnership with the Art Institute is a part of that commitment. Chicago has been Allstate’s ‘hometown’ for more than 80 years,” said Cheryl Cooke, Allstate Manager, Chicago Civic and Cultural Affairs. “Our roots here run deep, and that's especially true when it comes to sponsoring programs that tell the history of Chicago through art and culture. This program helps to improve the quality of life for every citizen and to open eyes, hearts and minds to art and culture all across the city.” Allstate contributed $4.5 million in 2012 to nonprofit organizations throughout Chicagoland—through more than 50 arts and cultural organizations in the area, including the National Museum of Mexican Fine Arts and the Museum of Science and Industry, among others, Cooke

said. And the exhibit’s contribution to the city is just as impressive. “The exhibit enhances the City’s reputation as a destination for great art and culture. In addition, the exhibit illustrates the diversity in Chicago and the impact various ethnic groups have had on developing our city into one of America’s greatest,” Cooke said. “Chicago’s neighborhoods are at the core of all things related to this great city. Outreach and awareness-building in neighborhoods are key to this and other initiatives that Allstate supports. Chicagoans need to know the impact diverse cultures have had on the history and development of Chicago.” Leah Hope added: “Each artist's story symbolizes the journey of so many during that time. And it’s a story that's repeated in our families. We hope this exhibition will give Chicagoans the opportunity to reflect on their families' stories of migrating to Chicago,” she said. “They came here for opportunity, for something better for their families. That's something to which we can all relate. Who doesn't hope for better for the next generation?” External events associated with the art exhibit include a

seminar titled, “They Seek A City,” to be held April 6 at 1 p.m. at the museum. This is a free event with museum admission where Chicago scholars will discuss selected works. A family program: The Artist’s Studio will be held on Saturday and Sundays in March between the hours of 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. This is a free event where participants will create an artwork that tells the story of how their families came to settle here. There are also four community outreach events scheduled throughout the Chicago Public Library system: February 27 at 6 p.m. at Greater Grand Crossing Branch, 1000 E. 73rd St.; March 7 at 6 p.m. at West Town Branch, 1625 W. Chicago Ave.; April 6 at 3 p.m. at the Bezazian Branch, located at 1226 W. Ainslie St.; and on May 11 at 11 a.m. at the Woodson Regional Branch, located at 9525 S.
