Former CSU student vindicated, vows to continue fight By J. Coyden Palmer Earlier this week, Chicago State University (CSU) was named to a dubious list, joining nine other universities in the U.S., which are considered the worst for supporting free speech. The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education listed CSU and the University of Illinois on its 2015 list. While there are a myriad of reasons CSU could have landed on the list, some recently documented cases serve as a template. Current and former students say they are not allowed to speak out against the University without retaliation. In a court case last year, a jury found that former legal counsel, James Crowley was fired from CSU in retaliation for his reporting misconduct by University President Wayne Watson; CSU has not had a school newspaper for the last few years; and a blog run by tenured professor, Phillip Beverly—who has also served as Senate Faculty President—was targeted by CSU administrators to be stopped, according to a lawsuit filed by Beverly last year. A spokesperson for the University said the list has no validity, no objectivity and is a special-interest group with its own agenda. The University believes the organization has its own axe to grind and that it mischaracterized a lot of issues. Last month, former CSU student Willie Preston was found not guilty of criminal trespassing charges filed against him in 2013 by the University and had a restraining order that was filed against him

WILLIE PRESTON (r) and Brittany Bailey have filed a federal lawsuit against Chicago State University for allegedly violating their freedom of speech. The suit alleges the University interfered with the election of Bailey and Preston to the Student Government Association, in an attempt to prevent them from advocating for students and voicing their opinions about school policies.

by CSU Provost Angela Henderson rescinded. This week, Preston told Crusader, Henderson lied when she accused him of threatening her and her family. He said the case against him was bogus from the start and he has also filed a civil suit against CSU. “It was a long fight for over a year to get all of this cleared up,” Preston said. “All I did was go to the Board of Trustees meeting in October and was attempting to speak. As soon as I stood up to speak during the time allotted for questions and comments from the public, I was taken into custody by CSU police. They are subject to the Open Meetings Act and all members of the public are allowed to attend.” Preston is accusing CSU officials of rigging an election in the spring of 2013 so that he could not win. He said the election results were not made public until he went to Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s office and they forced CSU to release the results, which he claimed showed he won over 70 percent of the vote. Preston claims the election results were illegally voided, thus, vacating his position as the voting student representative on the board. Preston believes the University did not want him on the board because he was seeking to have Watson removed. Watson’s relationship with faculty and students has been rocky during his tenure. Many had opposed him getting the position, and during his time at the helm, he (Continued on page 2)

First Black player in White Sox history dies of natural causes A Black Cuban, Minoso came to the United States in the 1940s. He played in the Negro Leagues for the New York Cubans, and his first Major League team was the Cleveland Indians. Coming to the White Sox in 1951 via a trade, Minoso had two stints with the White Sox and on several occasions, he showed how prolific a player he was in leading the American League in steals, triples and total runs scored. He was also a multiple All-Star during his time with the Sox. Messages of condolences poured in from around the country and world, even from Minoso’s native land, Cuba. The White Sox most

Minnie Minoso the “Cuban Comet” dies at age 90 By J. Coyden Palmer Minnie Minoso, also known as “Mr. White Sox” and the first Black professional Major League baseball player in Chicago, is being remembered for his friendliness; contribution to promoting the game; skill on the field; and inspiring generations of baseball players. Minoso, who came from Cuba and played for the White Sox in 1951, died March 1 from natural causes at the wheel of his parked vehicle after attending a friend’s birthday party. His death comes just weeks after Ernie Banks, known as “Mr. Cub,” died from heart failure. Banks was the first Black player in Chicago Cubs’ history. “We have lost our dear friend and a great man. Many tears are falling,” said White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf.

Former CSU Student (Continued from page 1) has been accused of giving a job to a woman he was dating; trying to censor faculty from speaking out; and, in general, having an abrasive style of leadership that does not work well with CSU’s diverse student population, in which many of the students are adults with families of their own. Last year, Henderson had her credibility questioned when the University of Illinois-Chicago reportedly began a review of her doctoral dissertation after a report ran in the Chicago Tribune questioning if Henderson plagiarized part of her dissertation. She was cleared of any wrongdoing late last year and has a pending lawsuit in Cook County against UIC accusing them of tarnishing her reputation and good name, shame, interference with her career, and emotional distress. Preston said Stephanie Sanchez served on the Board when he was the rightful person elected. He said at the time Sanchez served, she also worked in Hen-

derson’s office and had a 100 percent voting record lock in step with other members of the board. Preston believes Sanchez was not qualified and did nothing to keep fellow students informed with what was happening. CSU spokesperson Thomas Wogan said the University would have no comment on Preston being found innocent in the criminal case because he is no longer a student there. He also declined to comment on the pending civil suit, explaining the University does not comment on matters in current litigation. “Mr. Preston is an expelled student, so there really is nothing I can say about him,” Wogan said. Wogan also declined to comment on why Preston was expelled. But, Preston told Crusader he was expelled after getting into an altercation with another student. Preston said the other student was not suspended or expelled after the fight and said he was instead given a job at CSU. Preston said the CSU community is uninformed and has been ever since the demise of the student newspaper, Tempo, a few years ago. He said he and others were leading a campaign to

bring back the newspaper because it was student-run and-controlled, which gave students a voice on campus and a chance to inform. Wogan said he could not speak as to why Tempo was discontinued because it happened before he arrived on campus, but he said the University does use alternative outlets. “As campus media moves into the digital age, there are a number of outlets that students, faculty and employees contribute to in terms of telling stories about what is happening on campus. Different departments have their own newsletters— some are online and some of them are printed and distributed on campus. But, we’ve

found that to be a more effective way of spreading the news about what is happening on campus via those outlets, instead of an antiquated and outdated print newspaper,” Wogan said. Campus communication is a part of the accreditation process. The Higher Learning Commission reviewed the topic when CSU came up for accreditation recently. According to Wogan, the University did get favorable reviews on their efforts to improve campus communication. Preston is currently a student at Roosevelt University. He obtained over 60 credit hours during his three years at CSU, where he majored in political science. He said despite all that occurred, he would like to come

back to CSU. He said the school saved his life and serves a great importance in the Black community. Growing up in Englewood, Preston said there are “a lot of brothas who, if they could get in CSU, could turn their lives around.” He feels he owes it to the University to keep pushing it to change for the better although it has been resistant. “That place can be a bridge for a better life to many people in our community,” Preston said. “But, the culture of CSU and philosophy of the administration is ‘give us your tuition money, shut up and just maybe you will graduate.’”

high-profile fan, who happens to live in the White House, also expressed his condolences. “For South Siders and Sox fans all across the country including me— Minnie Minoso is and will always be ‘Mr. White Sox,’” President Obama said in a statement released by the White House. “Minnie may have been passed over by the Baseball Hall of Fame during his lifetime, but for me and for generations of Black and Latino young people, Minnie’s quintessentially American story embodies far more than a plaque ever could. Michelle and I send our thoughts and prayers to his family and fans in Chicago, Cleveland and around the world.” The argument for why Minoso should be in the Hall of Fame is something that has irked baseball fans for years. Despite having better numbers than Jackie Robinson and playing in the era when players of color were just being allowed to play, the decision by Baseball Writers of America to keep Minoso out has been a head-scratcher. But with his death—similar to Ron Santo’s of the Cubs a few years ago—the campaign to get Minoso into the Hall of Fame is gaining momentum. “I only wish he would have lived long enough to see his plaque go up in Cooperstown,” said Ken 2

Honoring the life of Dr. Webb Evans, funeral services held By J. Coyden Palmer Dr. Webb Evans, founder and past president of the United American Progress Association (UAPA) passed away on Feb. 23 at Mercy Hospital in Chicago. Known for his message of “Buy Black” of which he promoted throughout Chicago neighborhoods, the community lost one of its greatest activists and resources. Evans was a man who wore many hats in the community. He was a member of several community organizations and church affiliated programs. But most people knew him simply as “Mr. Buy Black” because Evans believed that economic independence was the key to improving the conditions to Black Americans. “We talk about how not to forget our community landmarks and Webb Evans is one of those landmarks we must not forget,” wrote community blogger Mark Allen. “There was absolutely nothing more important to him than telling our major leaders and ordinary people the importance of using our economic power in ways to sustain and increase our community businesses, jobs and institutions. His life and legacy paved the way for so many.” Evans once stated that, “anybody can come to this country and within a short time they are doing better than Black African Americans.” Ujamaa is the Seventh principle of the African American holiday Kwanzaa, and means cooperative economics. For Evans, every day was Ujamaa. His car was adorned with bumper stickers, the African American flag and large signs on the doors encouraging anyone who could see it to “Buy Black.” And even at the age of 101, Evans was still often seen driving throughout the South Side in his well-known vehicle. When young people would see the car and then the driver exiting they would also ask him questions, Evans told Crusader in

2008. He always enjoyed the opportunity to talk with kids and encourage them to be business owners. “I tell them going to college is great and I want them to do that. I also want them to get good paying jobs and learn the ins and outs of their industry. But I also want them to bring what they learned back to the community and open their own business,” Evans said. “For 52 years he preached that if we would circulate our dollars with Black owned businesses we could create more jobs for Black people,” posted Rahim Aton, the current president of the United American Progress Association on his Facebook page. “I will work hard to keep his legacy alive. The first project we are undertaking is raising funds to purchase the commercial property located on 79th Street between Hermitage and Paulina and refurbish all existing structures into a community center that will be named; The Dr. Webb Evans Center for Economic Change. The center will serve as a living breathing entity honoring the life work of Dr. Webb Evans-Mr. Buy Black!” Others in the community had the same sentiments. Jocilyn Floyd, a member of the Chesterfield Community Organization, said Evans was known throughout Chatham, West Avalon and the Chesterfield communities. She is challenging others in the community to step up and carry the torch Evans carried for so long. “Dr. Evans ‘Mr. Buy Black!’ had a great message, but who will carry on his legacy to encourage African Americans to shop within the community of African American Businesses?” Floyd asked. “Unfortunately, we as a people still need to be reminded to “Buy Black” as we argue about outside businesses coming into the community. It would be my hope his vision doesn’t fade away due to lack of knowledge.” Webb was recognized throughout his life for his work. He is a

He was also a longtime subscriber to the Crusader Newspaper. Dorothy R. Leavell, Editor and Publisher of the Chicago and Gary Crusader Newspapers said, “Webb Evans was a man of the highest integrity and was the most persistent advocate for Blacks controlling their own community economically. The Crusader’s call for ‘Blacks Must Control Their Own Community,’ was a slogan coined in 1940 by our founders, so we felt a deep connection to Dr. Evans. Our city and the Black community have lost a treasure. We shall miss him, but feel assured that his work will be greatly rewarded.” Funeral services for Evans will be held on Saturday, March 7 at Cathedral Baptist Church, 4821 S. Wabash. The Pre-past will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the funeral to follow at 11 a.m.

EDITORIAL IS THE “BUSINESS-FICATION” OF POLITICS A GOOD IDEA? The world that we live in is changing on a daily basis. Once upon a time, according to some people, our mores and values were better than they currently are, and assert that things are getting worse in some regards. (This is not to forget about slavery and Jim Crow, but general social “expectations” were different). Today in the realm of popular culture it seems that anything goes. There was a time when you would never hear a curse word on radio or television; and when married couples in the early years of fledgling television would not even sleep in the same bed. All of this has changed however, and today wanton vulgarity makes it into the public domain in the name of “art.” What made the difference? Business, or more accurately, profit made from selling things to people who want them. Lately there is the buzz going around in political campaigns wherein people sometimes lean toward a candidate who is business savvy. This has been the case now in a number of elections where people think that a person’s business acumen will translate into better outcomes for everyone. This has even been said about school systems. School superintendents with business savvy are sometimes favored over those whose background is basically in education. This trend of attraction for business types can eventually prove to be counterproductive, and in the case of African Americans, especially deleterious, considering the treatment from the business community that Blacks have traditionally endured. Through the years it was said to be “last hired, first fired” when it came to Black people. Today, even though there have been wonderful gains, the unemployment rate in Black communities is still unacceptable. In many places it remains in the double digits. Business has not been especially kind to African Americans. Now, why would the “business-fication” of the political process and the trend toward the election of business people to public office, matter to Black people? It is simply this - in the United States capital is king, and the ultimate aim of capitalism is the acquisition of capital. People are not really factored into the equation; in fact, there will always be a problem when it comes to measuring people against dollars; in almost every case, dollars win. This is why so-called “austerity measures” adopted to help failing economies always seem to smack the poor in the face first, and it is why there is a vanishing middle class. Businessmen who are politicians are always looking at the bottom line; saving money, which does not translate into saving people! Let’s face it - corporations, the broad face of business in America, are basically undemocratic. Democracy is not usually present in the halls of corporate power. Americans always boast about this being a “free” country, and they boast about taking our brand of “democracy” to other places on the planet, usually brandishing some type of sword in the process in order to motivate compliance. But at home, the poor and middle classes have a hard row to hoe. An employee has very little say-so as to whether or not he or she is caught up in a downsize frenzy. They have very little clout when it comes to salary negotiation, which is why workers can work 8 to 12 hour days only to come home with barely enough money to make ends meet. The “business-fication” of the education system is especially daunting. Decisions will be made based on a bottom line that will not benefit students. School closing decisions have been made based mainly on fiscal concerns. Ultimately, the marriage of politics and business will only benefit those who are already adept at making money; it would generate a monster that is antithetical to true democracy and by extension, to the welfare of the average non-wealthy person, as well as many African Americans. Politics and business – caveat emptor (may the buyer beware). 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Why should we believe the cops? Dear Editor: So somebody busts the Chicago Police Department’s secret torture house over in Homan Square on the West Side and the department swears up and down it is not what an independent newspaper reported. My question to the people in charge at the CPD is why should we believe you? The department, mainly the superintendent, has repeatedly lied to the public about crime in Chicago. He and the mayor have been telling us one thing, when we know the opposite is happening. With that kind of background, there is every reason to believe that, yes a man was killed by police at that secret station. There is every reason too, to believe they take people there and those people are not heard from for days on end. I fully support those people who were protesting and want the superintendent and the people who work directly for him to hold a town hall meeting. If they do that, they probably will still lie to us, but at least it will be in person. Maybe we can get some answers. We can’t get any with them hiding behind desks and press conferences.

The superintendent is saying because the cops who work out of the secret spot are undercover, it might be too dangerous for them if the public knew it was there. PUHLEEESE! Cops have been working undercover from regular police stations for decades. Now, all of a sudden, it has to be super secret? This is not just a police matter. The mayor needs to be speaking about this. He is the one who hired this superintendent. I know the mayor is in a fight for his political life, but he needs to address this so he doesn’t lose any more credibility. Maybe, he doesn’t care. As big as Chicago is, it seems unlikely that there would be only one facility like the Homan Square secret station. No doubt, at least in my mind, there is a very similar operation out south some place. I swear that it is getting harder and harder in Chicago to tell who the real crooks and bad guys are.

Willie Wilson with each passing day. I don’t understand why he doesn’t recognize he lost the mayoral race and needs to go someplace and sit down like Dock Walls and Bob Fioretti are doing. It looks like the political spotlight is feeling so good to Willie Wilson that he will do just about anything to stay in it. Did you (Continued on page 16)

The Big Green Hustle, Part 2 Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist Yes, the Dot Com Era was filled with fraud. One year we had 14 high tech startups pay sponsorship for our annual conference. The next year they were all gone – bankrupt. They get quick funding from investors. Then they ripped off as much of the cash without detection and killed the company through the bankruptcy courts. All of the funding that went into the project would now be in the hands of the perpetrators (off shore accounts, etc.). The investors would be left holding the bag. The Green Hustle is quite similar but this time the perpetrators stick up government money, i.e. tax money – yours and mine. Why rip off investors when the money is already sitting around in Washington, D.C. and state capitals throughout the land. Like with the high tech games, former Vice President Al Gore is leading the charge. He makes millions, perhaps billions, of dollars along the way. Nobel Peace Prize, big selling documentary (Inconvenient Truth), books and the sale of a television channel that he bought for a pittance and sold for nearly $1 billion

Harry C. Alford (Al Jazeera). What is so ironic about Gore’s passion for fighting fossil fuels (natural gas, oil, coal, etc.) is that his family’s wealth comes from the coal and oil business. They have ownership in Occidental Oil and his clever father was a U.S. Senator known to make crazy deals on the side in the coal business. You could not have any major business activity with coal in Tennessee without the “old man” blessing it. Al Gore is a good example of the

“Billionaires Club.” That is a nickname Senator David Vitter (RLouisiana) calls them. These very wealthy environmental zealots put up a relentless fight against energy companies and anything else that improves our infrastructure and promotes industrial progress. They make their money by promoting the idea that we produce too much Green House Gases and are threatening the Ozone. Their investments are counter to those who have ownership in the manufacturing and energy industries. That’s the long-term answer for their advocacy. They pour billions of dollars supporting groups like Greenpeace, Sierra Club, etc. President Obama’s agenda is to kill coal and drive oil and natural gas usage to a minimum. His belief that if we provide funding new environmentally safe things will come about throughout the nation. That belief has opened the way for a myriad of con artists. Early in his presidency he put up $80 billion in subsidies and/or guaranteed loans (guaranteed by us the taxpayers). One of the first big awardees was Solyndra with a whopping $535 million loan guarantee for solar production. Never mind that the principles of Solyndra had no experience whatsoever in the solar in-

dustry. They were good fundraisers for the Obama campaign and that is all it took. Obviously, this matter was headed for disaster and it happened at lightning speed. Every one of those tax dollars was written off. They got the money and we got the shaft. Don’t think this is isolated. Billions of dollars are being written off as each political crony comes up with a clean air gadget to pitch. We know of no successful funding by the federal government on any innovation experiment. That is just the federal government. States are just as reckless or should I say corrupt. Keep in mind that these hustlers get the money and then declare failure and hide behind bankruptcy laws. They are getting rich as our tax money is going to waste. It is a mild form of robbery. No one seems to complain. For states, California is one of the worst when it comes to environmental fraud abuse. The state has recently cut back on funding for education, assistance to the disabled and law enforcement. However, they have increased money for these environmental failures. Cali has even created new taxes like $3 on each license plate to fund more and more of these fraudulent projects. New taxes exceed over $15

billion for Californian citizens. Recently, the Governor of Oregon has been busted for hiring his girlfriend to oversee issuing loan guarantees for new environmental projects. Funny, she also kept her lobbying job of finding funding for environmental projects. This was clearly a pay to play scheme using the guise of helping the environment. The governor was in his fourth term and now he has resigned and is awaiting indictments for him and his girl. It’s getting worse! Now the Billionaires Club is encouraging student and activist groups to demand institutions with pension funds to divest in energy companies. This is nothing but a scheme to artificially depress the value of the energy stocks. They would quickly sell their energy stocks which would drop in market value and then buy all of the energy stocks they could find and laugh as their values return to normal. This is Wall St. short selling at its best. Meanwhile, the retirees will be robbed of the true value of their pensions. Shelby County to Washington, D.C. march needed By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist After ceremonies wrap up Sunday in Alabama commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Selma-toMontgomery March and the signing of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, a group of die-hard demonstrators will re-enact the full march. “We are re-enacting the full 54mile March this year,” Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) President Charles Steele announced at a press conference in Montgomery. “The March will begin in Selma on Sunday, March 8, with the Commemoration of Bloody Sunday, and will conclude on Friday, March 13, with an 11:00 a.m. event on the steps of the Alabama State Capitol in Montgomery.” At the news conference, Alabama State Senator Hank Sanders (DSelma) correctly noted, “The right to vote is being challenged at every turn. From voter photo ID (modern day poll tax), proof of citizenship to register (modern day literacy test) and reduction in voting and voter registration days to the Shelby County v. Holder decision gutting the 1965 Voting Rights Act and more, Americans are losing the right to vote, which so many people sacrificed their lives and blood to secure.” In Shelby V. Holder, by a margin of www.chicagocrusader.com

George E. Curry 5 to 4 in June 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court voted to cut Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, which required jurisdictions with a proven history of racial discrimination to pre-clear any election law change with the U.S. Attorney General or the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. The case grew out of a decision by Calera, a small city in Shelby County, Ala., to implement a redistricting plan that led to the defeat of the city’s lone African American City Council member. Under the plan, a district that was 71 percent Black

was redrawn so that its Black population was reduced to 23 percent. The plan was never submitted for pre-approval. According to the Brennan Center for Justice at the New York University School of Law, more than 40 bills have been introduced in 17 states that would restrict access to registration or voting. In view of these politically motivated efforts to suppress the Black vote in particular, I am hereby proposing a Shelby County, Ala. to Washington, D.C. March, with the goal of getting Congress to protect the integrity of voting in the U.S. Just as the Selma-to-Montgomery March led to the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, a Shelby County to D.C. March could pressure Congress to act again to protect the sacred right to vote. The march would kick-off in Calera, about 30 minutes south of Birmingham, and address the relevant voting issues along the march route. After Calera, Ala., the next stop would be in Georgia, where marchers could express support for proposed legislation that would expand opportunities for eligible citizens to vote, and provide for or expand the electronic transfer of voters’ information between state agencies. In South Carolina, demonstrators could support a bill that would relax voter ID or citizenship laws and leg-

islation that would make it easier for people with disabilities to cast a ballot. Crossing into North Carolina, demonstrators can join an effort to overturn the Voter Information Verification Act, a voter suppression bill signed into law by Republican Gov. Pat McCrory. The controversial measure requires government-issued voter ID, ends same day voter registration, bans Sunday voting and discontinues pre-voter registration for 16 and 17-year-olds. Several organizations, including the NAACP State Conference of Branches, have sued to overturn the law. Marchers might want to spend some extra time in Virginia before moving on to D.C. to oppose a bill that would restrict access to registration and voting and support a competing one that would increase access to voting, oppose a bill that would require proof of citizenship (such as a birth certificate) to register or to vote, support proposed legislation that would expand early in-person voting, back proposed legislation to reduce waiting times for voting, endorse a bill to expand opportunities to vote by absentee ballot, support a bill to protect voters from having their name wrongfully removed from voting lists, and back a proposed bill to increase the likelihood of contested provisional ballots being counted. In Washington, demonstrators

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

should underscore the embarrassing reality that D.C. is the only capital of a democratic country in the world that does not enjoy voting representation in its national legislative body or true home rule. I am glad we’re commemorating the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday and passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. But after the celebration, it’s time to undo the damage the Supreme Court and largely Republican state legislatures have done to the landmark voting legislation. The Brennan Center report stated. “This year, the courts–including the U.S. Supreme Court–are again poised to rule on voter ID and other election laws. Courts failed to block a number of restrictive laws last year, and without clear limits, states appear ready to move forward with harsh new measures.” We must block those measures. George E. THE UNIA AND GARVEY’S ECONOMIC PROGRAM Dr. Conrad Worrill, Director/Professor, Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS) located at 700 East Oakwood Blvd, Chicago, Illinois, 60653, 773-268-7500, Fax: 773268-3835. E-mail: c-worrill@neiu.edu, Web site: www.ccics-chicago.org, Twitter: @CCICS_Chicago Marcus Mosiah Garvey was born August 17, 1887 in St. Ann’s Bay, Jamaica. The organization he founded, the Universal Negro Improvement Association, in Kingston, Jamaica, 1914, was one of the greatest organizations that facilitated mass action of African people worldwide in the 1920s and 30s. In this present era of economic and educational onslaught against the African Community in America, it is important that we understand that the rise of the African Centered Education Movement should be linked to our quest for economic independence. We must free the “African mind” through African Centered Educational activities so that we might better understand the importance of economic self-reliance. One model that we draw strength from pursuing economic and educational liberation is the model established by the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in

Dr. Conrad Worrill the 1920s. The more I read and study about Marcus Garvey, the more I am amazed at the great contributions he made to African people to become a self-reliant and self-sufficient people. At the core of Marcus Garvey’s program was his urging of African people to acquire educa-

tion and economic power. As he always started, “A race without power is a race without respect.” When we examine the economic condition of Africans in America, and throughout the world, we find one glaring problem— African people do not control our economic resources at the level we should. This is primarily due to our miseducation as a people. In a disproportionate manner, African people depend on the European and Asian world for food, clothing, and shelter. More often than not, the European and Asian worlds are the producers, processors, distributors, and wholesalers. African people are the consumers. This was one of the major problems that the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey addressed during his lifetime and that Minister Louis Farrakhan continues to address. As our ancestor, Dr. Tony Martin writes in his book “Race First,” which is one of the best books written on the works of Marcus Garvey, “Marcus Garvey, unlike his major rivals in the United States, built a mass organization that went beyond civilrights agitation and protest and based itself upon a definite, well thought out program that he believed would lead to the total emancipation of the race from white dominion.” To implement his program, Gar-

vey set up the Negro Factories Corporation (NFC). Its objective was to build and operate factories in the big industrial centers of the United States, Central America, the Caribbean, and Africa. The NFC established a chain of cooperative grocery stores, a restaurant, a steam laundry, tailor and dressmaking shop, a millinery store, and a publishing house. Mr. Garvey also established a steamship company, The Black Star Line. He envisioned a fleet of steamers carrying passengers and establishing trade among African people of the United States, Central America, the Caribbean, and Africa. In the summer of 1920, Garvey launched his full blown program at the First Annual Convention of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) of which he was the founder and first President General. On August 2, 1920, after a massive parade of thousands of well drilled, uniformed ranks of the UNIA, 35,000 delegates from all over the United States and some twenty-five countries convened at Madison Square Garden, in New York City. It was, according to the New York Times, one of the largest gatherings in the history of the hall. Dr. Martin explains that, “Central to the ideological basis underpinning Garvey’s program was the question of

race. For Garvey, the Black man was universally oppressed on racial grounds, and no matter how much people try to shy away from this issue, the fact is, this is still true today.” As Malcolm X used to say, it was our Blackness “which caused so much hell not our identity as Elks, Masons, Baptists or Methodists.” If we are ever to become a liberated people this idea must be deeply rooted in the day to day organizing and mobilizing of our people as we seek economic and educational liberation. Far too many Africans in America have abandoned this idea in their organizing projects. Mr. Garvey understood that the foundation of our liberation was economic and educational independence based on racial solidarity. There are numerous lessons we can learn from the legacy of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey. Without economic independence tied to the acquisition of political power, African people in America and African people everywhere will continue to be the subjects of the whims of other people. In this regard, Garvey said, “...you can be educated in soul, vision and feeling, as well as in mind. To see your enemy and know him is a part of the complete education of man... Develop yours and you become as great and full of knowledge as the other fellow without entering the classrooms.”

Democrats still searching for winning formula By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel just got spanked. Despite a campaign war chest of more than $15 million and the support of President Barack Obama, the former Congressman and White House chief of staff could not avoid a runoff in the non-partisan election. Garnering 45 percent of the vote to runner-up Jesus “Chuy” Garcia’s 34 percent, he did not clear the 50 percent bar for victory. Emanuel, the darling of the mainstream Democratic Party, has earned the dubious distinction of being in the first Chicago mayoral runoff in nearly 20 years. He also runs the risk of being the first incumbent mayor ousted since Harold Washington beat Jane Byrne in 1983. The man who delivered the Emanuel whipping, Chuy Garcia is a county commissioner and former alderman. His base is the poorer neighborhoods of Chicago, the Latino community, and the teachers’ union. He pounded on the theme of income inequality and exploited the widespread perception that Emanuel is arrogant and removed from poor people. In6

deed, most of Rahm Emanuel’s support came from wealthy white voters who helped raise his large campaign fund. Garcia didn’t have a fraction of Emanuel’s money, but he had a large cadre of volunteers to help deliver his votes. There were three other candidates in the race, and their combined 20 percent of the vote will likely determine the outcome of the April 7 election. Just a day after the election, both Emanuel and Garcia were courting their competitors, seeking their endorsements. So far, those opponents have been noncommittal. Emanuel’s loss is a major setback to the Democratic establishment. Voters are tired of income inequality being acknowledged, with nothing being done about it. Their only recourse is the vote, and on February 24 in Chicago, they used it. According to the Chicago Tribune, Emanuel rode to victory on the coats of Blacks four years ago with 58 percent of the votes in the six wards that are more than 90 percent Black. This time, he won 42 to 45 percent of those same wards. Blacks may determine the victor of the April 7 election.

SATURDAY, MARCH 7, 2015

Dr. Julianne Malveaux Another possible Democratic setback is looming as Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) weighs the possibility of challenging former Secretary of State Hilary Rodham Clinton. Warren has been portrayed as a champion of the people, especially where consumer protection and financial matters are concerned. She has raised her voice against financial

skullduggery by banking institutions, been a critic of attempts to weaken the Dodd Frank bill, and a defender of consumer rights. The architect of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), Warren has been the darling of the left, and has enhanced that status with her travel to many progressive gatherings. While she has demurred when asked if she will run for president, her replies, if somewhat definite, also seem coy. Additionally, there have been efforts to draft her into running, with online petitions and other efforts. While Warren seems to have little baggage, Hilary Rodham Clinton seems less than invincible. Questions have been raised about the Clinton Foundation and the sources of its money, especially when this money has come from foreign governments that have mixed relationships with the United States. Other questions have been raised about the high six-figure speeches Clinton gives and the audiences she gives them to. Certainly, she is entitled to earn what the market will bear, but some say those who foot the bill are the very Wall Street scions that

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

Elizabeth Warren rails against. Could Elizabeth Warren seriously challenge Clinton? Is there a chance that she could win the Democratic nomination? If she chooses to enter the presidential race in the next several months, she will be entering the race at about the time Barack Obama did eight years ago. Like Obama, she has penned an autographical book that explains the origins of her populist views. And like Obama, she has the chance of “catching on” with voters. After Clinton, the only competition Warren is likely to have for the Democratic nomination is Vice President Joe Biden. But Biden, at 73, may be considered too old to be considered a viable choice for president. Biden also has a history of both oral and behavioral gaffes, most recently offering a rather intimate whisper into the ear of Defense Secretary Ashton Carter’s wife Stephanie at Carter’s swearing in. Whether she enters the race or not, Warren’s very presence pushes Clinton to the left on populist economic issues. And if Warren (Continued on page 16) www.chicagocrusader.com

Ima been laughing so hard all week ‘cause someone dared to out Al Sharpton, AT&T, Comcast and more names could have been added to the list of “sell outs.” What was so funny was he said, “Give Al Sharpton 50 thousand dollars and a chicken and you got him.” But den you know there is so much truth to it that you want

Ima is so sorry to talk about our third place finisher in the Mayoral election again. It’s evident that he don’t know no better, but for fear some of our folks thinks he MIGHT be right and SMART in his position to vote for “Chuy” and endorse Rahm we will try again. Now Ima don’t think that he ain’t a man of his word, I DO!! But what kind of sense does it make? One vote for obviously who he personally thinks is the right

choice for Mayor and by his endorsement for Rahm he may confuse a lot more of his supporters and they vote for him. Now everybody remembers that he supported Rauner for Governor and Rauner has told him to endorse Rahm and everybody knows that Rahm did not support Quinn (a fellow Democrat) and everybody now knows that Rahm Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

and Rauner are friends and now that Rahm has his “tit in a ringer” of a run off is trying to make us think he done changed, and all of those cuts that will hit the Black community hard that Governor Rauner intends to do means that Rahm is with him and has a similar style when he already done cut 50 schools and replaced them with about 20 Charter schools . . . and so on and so on and so on. Ima done got dizzy ya’ll. But you know that the title of this segment is correct. This whole thing and the folks in it are “DUMBER THAN A BOX OF ROCKS.” More to come, stay tuned.

ON A SERIOUS NOTE Ima is personally touched by the passing of a true crusader – Webb Evans. If there was one man in this world that never changed his course for Blacks to control their

Webb Evans own destiny it was Webb. I guess we all thought Webb would never leave us, but 101 years was more than his share of vigilance. So Ima would just like to say thank you WEBB!!! We will miss you and we don’t know anyone that could possibly take your place.

Student and auto loan debts rise while foreclosures and bankruptcies drop By Charlene Crowell A new report by the New York Federal Reserve Bank seems to be saying that America’s household credit and debt are about as uneven as the nation’s economic recovery. A new economic analysis found fewer foreclosures, bankruptcies and credit card delinquencies. However, the rates of delinquent auto and student loans are worse than before. For most consumers, debt may seem like a constant companion – not a friend but somehow lurking near. How consumers manage their debts can also trigger financial stress. In December 2014, the nation’s consumers collectively carried $710 billion of debt. Of this amount, $570 billion was 90 days or more delinquent. It should also be noted that from mortgages to car loans, credit cards, auto financing and more – the high costs of predatory lending unnecessarily raise the costs of a wide range of products. In two specific lending areas – student and auto loans – both the amount of debt and delinquencies are rising. Both areas have also been under scrutiny by regulators and researchers alike as evidence mounts

on predatory loan practices. For the first time since before the recession started in 2007, the 90-day delinquency rate for auto loans (3.5 percent) is now greater than that of mortgages (3.1 percent). Auto loan balances continued to increase this quarter by $21 billion, and is larger than any time in history. That growth also comes with greater financial risk. “Underwriting standards have steadily weakened in auto lending,” says Chris Kukla, senior vice-president with the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL). “Dealers are pushing borrowers into longer loans and routinely making loans that are more than the car is worth. When dealer interest rate markups are allowed, the interest rate for compensation and other risky practices are added on top of the loans. CRL is concerned that these losses will continue to mount. Student loan debts in this same period rose to a new total of $1.16 trillion. In comparing student loan balances between 2013 and 2014, the New York Fed found the yearly increase to be $77 billion. Further, student loan delinquencies and defaults were even more than double that of auto lending at 11.3 percent and

www.chicagocrusader.com

Charlene Crowell may actually understate the full delinquency rate due to deferments, grace periods, forbearance that are not included in the repayment cycle. “Although we’ve seen an overall improvement in delinquency rates since the Great Recession, the increasing trend in student loan balances and delinquencies is concerning,” said Donghoon Lee, research officer at the New York Fed. “Student loan delinquencies and repay-

ment problems appear to be reducing borrowers’ ability to form their own households.” “Student loan debt can be a great financial tool for many borrowers to obtain a valuable college degree,” said Maura Dundon, a CRL senior policy counsel. “Sharply rising balances coupled with slow repayment and high delinquency rates may indicate that student loan debt is beginning to drain Americans economically. A disproportionate share of defaulters attended for-profit colleges, which are in urgent need of reform.” Mr. Lee’s observation on the slowdown of new households is also shared by a number of other policy experts who also view that growing student debts have delayed home purchases for many who are just beginning their careers. New mortgage loan originations totaled $355 billion, a historically low figure according to the New York Fed. At the same time, mortgage delinquencies continued to decline, balances on home equity lines of credit dropped by $2 billion and fewer consumers are filing for bankruptcy. In the last quarter of 2014, nearly 20 percent fewer bankruptcies were filed than at the same time last year:

268,000. Before making a decision on a major purchase or finance, try to learn as much as you can about the range of products and finance options available. The Internet offers a wealth of information from governmental office like the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Department of Education. CFPB offers the opportunity to file or check the status of formal complaints or blow the whistle on businesses suspected of violating laws. Similarly, the FTC’s web accepts consumer complaints including identity theft or adding your phone number to the nation’s Do Not Call Registry. Consumers can also request free copies of their credit reports. Additional consumer lending information is also available on CRL’s website. And always remember: When it comes to lending, if a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Charlene Crowell is a communications manager with the Center for Responsible Lending. Nominations being accepted for Heroes in the ‘Hood For 23 years Heroes in the ‘Hood has been honoring teen volunteers for sacrificing their time and talent to make a positive difference in their communities, as well as adults for inspiring youth by showing them what can be achieved through hard work, determination and belief in ones dream. Nominations are being accepted until March 15, 2015 for this year’s campaign. These teen heroes and their stories often go unacknowledged as most headlines are dominated with news of violence and tragedy. The Heroes in the ‘Hood campaign on the other hand promotes recognition of Chicago area youth 12-18 from economically disadvantaged neighborhoods in Chicago who organize and/or participate in volunteer community service and violence prevention with an awards reception and ceremony in addition to other gifts. In addition, four adults were awarded—three as “Honored Role Models” and one “Stop the Violence” winner, for their community service and the work ethnic they exemplify. One of the co-founder of Heroes in the ‘Hood Dorothy Leavell, publisher of the Gary and Chicago Crusader Newspapers, was recently interviewed by WCIU You & Me This Morning show host Aly Bockler who wanted to know more about the organization. The show was recorded at the South Side Help Center with Susan Garza a counselor at Jane Adams Elementary School and two students, who were recognized in 2014 for their community work. Leavell shared what she calls “one of the greatest stories” that she could remember about a young person doing volunteer work who was also homeless at the time. “These are the kinds of young people we want to recognize for doing volunteer work,” said Leavell. Heroes in the ‘Hood was created by GO Airport Express and the Chicago Crusader Newspaper with the cooperation of WVON-AM1690 and the DuSable Museum of African-American History. Together they present awards to “winners” in categories of Individual Teen Male and Female, Teen Group, and Adult “Stop the Violence” winner. Past winners of the program have tutored younger children, visited senior citizens, organized health fairs, clothing drives and food drives – projects that make a difference in their schools, communities or the lives of others. More than 500 teens living in Chicago have been awarded to date, while more than 2,000 teens have been “honorees” by attending the awards ceremonies. Nominees for Heroes in the ‘“Hood must be between the ages of 12 and 18, live in the city of Chicago and have performed the community service in 2014. Winners will receive tickets, transportation and lunch for a Chicago White Sox summer baseball game, 10

n honor of Black History Month, six African-American Justices of the Illinois Appellate Court, First District, Justices Shelvin Louise Marie Hall, P. Scott Neville, Joy V. Cunningham, Nathaniel Howse, Jr., Bertina E. Lampkin, and Cynthia Y. Cobbs, invited all appellate and supreme court employees to celebrate a Legacy of Judicial Service by African-American Justices. The celebration, the first of its kind in the First District Appellate Court and spear headed by Justice Hall, Chair of the Executive Committee of the First District, was held on February 26, 2015, on the 19th Floor of the Michael A. Bilandic building located at 160 N. LaSalle. Over 100 people were in attendance. The event featured a pictorial display of all of the First District African-American Justices who had ever served on the First District of the Appellate Court. The currently serving Justices, Justice Hall, Neville, Cunningham, Howse, Lampkin and Cobbs, each gave a short biographical presentation of the 17 justices who had served on the First District Court in the past, as well as their own biographies. Those who had served on the Court in the past included the first African-American to hold this position in the State of Illinois, the Honorable George N. Leighton who went on to be confirmed to a seat on the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois. The other Justices to serve included: Justices Glenn T. Johnson, Kenneth E. Wilson, Calvin C. Campbell, William Sylvester White, R. Eugene Pincham, Charles E. Freeman (now serving his third term on the Illinois Supreme Court), Blanche M. Court for the Northern District of Illinois), Carl McCormick, William Cousins, Jr., Everette A. Braden, Leslie Elaine South, Ellis E. Reid, Sharon Johnson Coleman (currently serving on the U.S. District Court for the Northern District), John O. Steele, Marcus P. Salone and William Henry Taylor II. The biographies of two other African-American Justices, Justice Mary McDade of the Third District and Justice Lisa Holder White of the Fourth District were also presented. The attendees at the celebration included Supreme Court Justices Charles E. Freeman, Anne M. Burke and Mary Jane Theis, and most of the current members of the First District Appellate Court. Also in attendance were former Justice Everett Braden, the former Clerk of the Appellate Court, First District, Gilbert Marchman, who served in that capacity for 22 years, the current Clerk of the Court, Steve Ravid, and Chief Deputy Clerk Tom Palella. An array of coffees, teas and delicious desserts from “Give Me Some Sugah Bakery” located on the Southeast Side of Chicago was provided by the Justices for everyone’s enjoyment as well as uplifting music. The culmination of the celebration was the singing of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” first written as a poem by James Weldon Johnson, and set to music by Johnson’s brother, John Rosamond Johnson in 1900. This song is one of the most cherished songs of AfricanAmericans in the United States and is often referred to as the Black National Anthem. Everyone in attendance was clearly moved by the celebration.

J’nai Bridges to represent the U. S. in Cardiff ‘Singer of the World’ competition American mezzo-soprano J’nai Bridges is one of 20 international finalists for the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2015 competition. Bridges, a third-year member of The Ryan Opera Center at Lyric Opera of Chicago, is currently portraying Vlasta in Lyric’s mainstage premiere of Mieczysław Weinberg’s “The Passenger.” Bridges is one of three finalists from the U.S. for the 32nd year of the prestigious competition, which takes place every second year. This year’s 20 finalists were chosen from nearly 350 applicants representing 55 countries and those selected to compete represent 15 nations. The eight-day competition is considered the premier showcase for opera and concert singers as they launch their careers. The singers will perform their own programs of operatic and concert works at St. David’s Hall, Cardiff, June 14- 21. “All of us at the Ryan Opera Center are incredibly proud of J’nai for advancing to the finals of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2015,” said Dan Novak, the program’s director. “She’s worked very hard during her three years here, and what a wonderful culmination of those efforts – to represent the United States in this prestigious international voice competition. We’re thrilled for her!” “J’nai’s portrayal of an Auschwitz inmate in ‘The Passenger’ is deeply moving and beautifully sung,” said Anthony Freud, Lyric’s general director. “We were overjoyed on opening night of the production to learn that she was selected as a

Cardiff finalist. The whole company is excited to have one of our own representing the United States.” J’nai Bridges is currently performing her ninth role at Lyric since 2012-13. In Lyric’s 2015-16 season, she will portray Carmen in Jimmy López’s “Bel Canto” which will have its world-premiere performances December 7, 2015 through January 17, 2016. A native of Lakewood, Washington, Bridges is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and the Curtis Institute of Music. She has sung the title role/“Carmen” at both the Glimmerglass Festival and Finger Lakes Opera (Geneseo, New York). Other recent engagements include performances at the Kennedy Center and with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and Opera Orchestra of New York. Bridges has received the Women’s Voice Fellowship from the Luminarts Cultural Foundation, a Sara Tucker Grant, a Sullivan Award, and the Marian Anderson Award. “Being chosen as a finalist is definitely the biggest honor I’ve received in my career so far,” said Bridges. “It means a great deal to me to represent the United States – and Lyric Opera and the Ryan Opera Center – in this competition. My time here definitely prepared me for this opportunity. Singing a huge and wide variety of roles and covers, plus the song recitals on WFMT, has broadened my repertoire. It’s really a good feeling to know that your hard work is paying off, and to be able to perform on an international level is gratifying and reassuring.”

The winner of the main prize will receive £15,000 ($16,622) and the Cardiff Trophy. The winner of the Song Prize, awarded to the best singer of Lieder and art song, will receive a £5000 ($5,541) prize and

Soprano Nicole Cabell won the Main Prize in 2005, directly after concluding three years as a Ryan Opera Center ensemble member. That year baritone Quinn Kelsey was a finalist for the Song Prize, as was Cabell, while still a member of the Ryan Opera Center. Other Ryan Center artists who have been past prize winners at the Cardiff Competition are soprano Erin Wall and mezzo-soprano Guang Yang who won the Main Prize in 1997 before beginning her Ryan Opera Center tenure. American mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton, who performed at Lyric earlier this season, won both the Main Prize and the Song Prize at the most recent Cardiff competition in 2013.

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING

A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe A Piece of a Man is No Peace. We’ve heard it time and time again, “Lord give me a man…any man will do…” Unfortunately, that is the sentiment and behavior exhibited with far too many women today. The church has long preached and quoted the scripture Isaiah 4:1, the Message Bible (MSG) translation states “That will be the day when seven women will gang up on one man, saying, “We’ll take care of ourselves, get our own food and clothes. Just give us a child. Make us pregnant so we’ll have something to live for!” Speaking of prophesies…although that scripture was probably written over 2,000 years ago—it is spot on today. The seven women for every one man is not a popular message but it appears to be the trend for the past 30 years or more. In the African

American community, this scripture is all too real. The modern translation is commonly referred to as “man sharing”. It looks like a Black woman might have a better chance at winning the lottery than marrying a Black man. James Brown sang lyrics to a popular song, “This is a man’s world, but it wouldn’t be nothing without a woman or a girl…” Nowadays, men know they are a hot commodity and can easily pick and choose. Even brothers behind bars, without a job or little education have the luxury of getting the attention of some of the best and brightest women of all races, but more so in the Black community. Statistics indicate there are more men in the world than women— when it comes to African Americans there is an even wider gap. According to ABC News, “Forty-two percent of U.S. Black women have nev-

er been married, double the number of white women who’ve never tied the knot. For starters, there are 1.8 million more Black women than Black men. So even if every Black man in America married a Black woman today, one out of 12 Black women still wouldn’t make it down the aisle if they hoped to marry a Black man. Let’s take 100 Black men. By the time you eliminate those without a high school diploma (21 percent), the unemployed (17 percent) and those ages 25-34 who are incarcerated (8 percent), you have only half of Black men, 54 percent, whom many Black women find acceptable.” Since the pickings are slim to none—many are willing to give it a try by any means necessary—thus, the mentality that a piece of a man is better than nothing. One young lady said it’s similar to “a build a bear project”...this is when you get a piece

of a man and build him the way you want—it’s all good. Married and single men are all up for grabs. This behavior is deadly and demonstrates a total lack of respect for all parties involved. Ladies—break it off now and run the other way to a life of self-respect, dignity and peace. Otherwise, you are headed to heartaches, headaches and lots of lonely nights and holidays. You deserve so much more. Look in the mirror and know that you deserve God’s absolute best!!! Noah, Bulls partner with Magellan on Violence Prevention Night

STAFF AND STUDENTS from Major Adams Community Committee and Youth Guidance’s B.A.M. (Becoming a Man) program were treated to a VIP kind of evening as the Bulls and Magellan Corporation teamed up to host Violence Prevention Night at the United Center on March 3. Staff and students from Major Adams Community Committee and Youth Guidance’s B.A.M. (Becoming a Man) program were treated to a VIP kind of evening as the Bulls and Magellan Corporation teamed up to host Violence Prevention Night at the United Center on Tuesday, March 3. A group of more than 25 students watched as Joakim Noah and his teammates turned in a gutsy performance for a win against the visiting Washington Wizards. Then, those on hand for the third in a series of three signature nights held during the 2014-15 season to highlight the Bulls’ areas of charitable focus got to meet their hero. Noah did it all against the Wizards, finishing with 14 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and three blocks. But his work wasn’t done at the final buzzer as he met with the groups, took photos and signed autographs after the game. The group also watched the team’s pregame warm ups and took a center court photo in addition to receiving a Bulls drawstring bag, t-shirt and notebook. It’s that kind of effort from Noah and the Bulls that interested Magellan Corporation in being part of the program. “We are passionate about helping the young people of Chicagoland; whether it be making sure kids have the healthcare they need, reenforcing the importance of education, providing positive extracurricular activities or keeping youth away from violence,” said Michael Minkus, manager of external relations and communications for Magellan. “We are always eager to be involved with efforts to improve the lives of youth and being a part of Violence Prevention www.chicagocrusader.com

Night fits perfectly with that philosophy.” In particular, the impact Noah and his Noah’s Arc Foundation make while working with the groups on hand Tuesday have resonated with those at Magellan. Major Adams Community Committee, located near the United Center in the Near West Neighborhood, is dedicated to mentoring and teaching at-risk students as well as helping them realize their full potential. The Bulls have worked with MACC over the last few years to organize player appearances, artistic expression workshops, holiday events and basketball tournaments. B.A.M. is a dropout prevention and anti-violence program for atrisk male students in grades 7-12 that offers in-school programming, in some cases complemented by after-school sports, to develop social-cognitive skills strongly correlated with reductions in violent and anti-social behavior. The Bulls have partnered with Youth Guidance since early 2012, arranging for guest speakers to address their program youth groups, offering mentoring opportunities, hosting students at games, providing arena tours, and organizing career presentations. In June of 2013, the Bulls and Chicago White Sox launched a series of public service announcement videos highlighting an anti-violence message and the teams’ partnership with Youth Guidance. The team also works with Youth Guidance’s Working on Womanhood (W.O.W) program, which serves 1,000 female youth at 30 schools. “We are familiar with the work of Major Adams Community

Committee and Youth Guidance through our relationship with the Noah’s Arc Foundation,” noted Minkus. “A large part of what makes these organizations so important is that they are truly neighborhood centric. These are not merely facilities that help atrisk youth; they are community institutions which are guiding local children down the right path to adulthood.” Sharing some of the stories of these programs to those who are so supportive and passionate about

the Bulls comes is of great value, Minkus believes. “It is important that more people know about the vital work done by organizations such as MACC and Youth Guidance,” said Minkus. “Hopefully, the more people that become familiar with these organizations and their missions, the more support they will receive, which in turn will allow them to help more kids.” Knowing the Bulls are an organization which strives for success on and off the court makes them an

ideal partner for Magellan to partner with them when it comes to giving back. “Magellan is a civic-minded organization that has always placed an emphasis on giving back,” stated Minkus. “The Bulls’ influence within our community is far reaching and touches many more civic groups than we could by ourselves. We are, accordingly, happy to collaborate with and support the Chicago Bulls, Nancy Reinsdorf and Leslie Forman, in all of their charitable efforts.”
