Black Press challenged, future hopeful By Freddie Allen Senior Washington Correspondent

WASHINGTON (NNPA) – Jordan Shanks, a sophomore English major at Howard University admitted that before Black Press Week, he didn’t know much about the Black Press or the Richmond Free Press, the Black newspaper published in the Virginia city where he grew up. “The state of the Black Press is impacted by the generation gap between the older folks and the younger folks,” said Shanks. Members of the Black community, young and old, believe that bridging that gap will be critical to the future of the Black Press. Despite myriad challenges facing the Black Press, Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., president and CEO of the National Newspapers Publishers Association (NNPA), a federation of more that 200-Black owned newspapers, said that the 188-year legacy of African American newspapers remains

strategically important, insightful, indigenous and impactful. “The challenge for us today, however, is to have a greater sense of economic accountability and economic equity and parity with those companies that are the profit beneficiaries of the trillion dollar consumer spending of [Black] people in the United States and throughout the world,” said Chavis. “What is the state of the Black Press in America and in the world today? It is financial assessment time,” said Chavis. “The Black Press needs to be financially more sustainable and profitable.” Chavis and others also echoed Shanks’ concerns about a generational and cultural gap preventing youth from engaging with the Black Press. E.R. Shipp, an associate professor and journalist-in-residence at Morgan State University in Baltimore, said that shortly after she began teaching a course on Black media at the school, (Continued on page 7)

Reporter victimized by distasteful tweets By J. Coyden Palmer The National Association of Black Journalists, along with two, local AfricanAmerican sports radio hosts have condemned comments made via Twitter last week by WSCR 670 AM morning host Dan Bernstein, in which he made comments about a Black female reporter’s breasts. The incident has touched off a conversation in the national media market about the challenges female journalists face. Aiyana Cristal of Comcast Sports Network has been in the Chicago market for a little under a year working as a reporter and anchor. On March 25, Bernstein and another WSCR host, Matt Spiegel, were having a conversation on Twitter about Cristal’s performance as a reporter while she was covering a Chicago Bulls game. When Spiegel tweeted that her work

Aiyana Cristal

“makes him uncomfortable” and that he “ends up awkwardly rooting for her to finish cleanly,” Bernstein responded with the following: “I have no rooting interest in her work, but enjoy her giant boobs.” The conversation continued to spiral downward between the two men, with Spiegel joining in and not rebuking Bernstein for the comment. Spiegel: “I am improbably distracted from them by her professional discomfort, it’s a crime.” Bernstein: “That’s a complicated thought. Unpacking that is beyond me.” Bernstein also continued to mention the word “boobs” in two other tweets during the conversation. The comments brought an immediate backlash from Twitter users who were following the conversation. Many called it appalling, and one woman said it was “sexist as hell.” NABJ President Bob Butler released a statement the following day: “I’ve known Cristal since she graduated from college, and I know she has paid a lot of dues to get where she is today. She does not deserve

this, nor does any other woman who works in our industry.” The NABJ Sports division also issued a separate release slamming Bernstein and Spiegel for what they deemed “distasteful comments on social media.” Marc Spears, chair of the NABJ Sports Task Force, said women continue to fight for equality in the workplace, especially in the genre of sports media. He said people forget that women had to actually go to court to get equal access to locker rooms just to do their jobs. “There is no room for prejudice in today’s sports landscape where journalists of every gender, nationality and color deserve to be respected for the merits of their pen and/or microphone, not their appearance,” Spears said. “We hope that Matt Spiegel, Dan Bernstein and WCSR will make amends with Aiyana for their ignorant references and do their part in improving the overall climate of respect for female journalists working in the sports industry.” But that may not happen anytime soon, (Continued on page 3)

Father Pfleger embarrassed by anti-gay bill Hiding behind religion is offensive and unfair By Chinta Strausberg Father Michael L. Pfleger at a recent Sunday service said he is embarrassed by Gov. Mike Pence (R-IN) for signing a bill that legally discriminates against lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender persons and even more outraged that the bill was crafted under the guise of religious freedom. Pfleger’s remarks were made during his Palm Sunday worship service, and wonders if the world has “flipped out.” Pfleger was referring to Gov. Pence’s signing of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act that permits a person or a business to use their religious beliefs to deny service to lesbians and gays. “I am so embarrassed as a Christian of what took place in Indiana this week,” said Pfleger. “I am most embarrassed that the governor and the legislators said they we’re going to pass this religious

freedom act so that places of businesses have the right not to hire or serve gays or lesbians, and they call it a Religious Freedom Act. Has the world flipped out “The government is now giving religious groups the right to discriminate when it ought to be the religious groups telling the government not to discriminate. “Suddenly now we can have our differences in our religious beliefs. We can say who we will or will not marry, but we have no right to ever deny anyone by race, nor by sex, nor by gender. Nobody will be discriminated in this church of Jesus Christ. This is God’s church. Not some religious carnival. “I was embarrassed when I saw nuns and brothers standing with the governor on this calling it religious freedom,” said Pfleger. He often wonders if Jesus is standing on his throne looking at us asking, “what have you done to my church?” “Two-thousand years ago he turned over tables. I think today he would be turning over pul-

refused to serve gays, Pence kept saying, “This is not about discrimination” rather he said, “it’s about empowering people to confront government overreach.” He claims “the issue” is whether “tolerance is a two-way street or not.”

Rep. Mary Flowers introduces Family Medical Leave Act By Chinta Strausberg In a vote of 16-10, The Labor and Commerce Committee approved the paid Family Medical Leave Act needed to provide benefits to eligible employees who need to take a paid family leave introduced by Rep. Mary Flowers (D- 31st) and will now go before

the full House for a final vote. Interviewed in Springfield, Flowers’ House Bill 166 when passed by the full House “will create the Family Medical Leave Act which requires the Department of Labor to establish and administer a program to provide benefits to eligible employees who take unpaid family leave to care for a

newborn child, a newly adopted or newly placed foster child, or a family member with a serious health condition.” Flowers said, “This will allow families that have hardships to be paid. They won’t lose their jobs. If you use up all of your sick time, your vacation time, you should be able to have a Family

County Hospitals ban choke holds The Cook County Board of Commissioners recently passed an ordinance introduced by Commissioner Richard R. Boykin, 1st District, banning the use of choke holds by Cook County Hospital Police, making Cook County the first major unit of government in the State of Illinois to address the controversial police tactic. “I introduced this measure because I believe strongly that recent events in other major American metropolitan areas compelled our County to act on this issue,” Boykin stated afterward. On July 17, 2014, Eric Garner died in New York City after being placed in a choke hold for 15 seconds by a police officer. On January 28, 2015, in the Detroit Metro Area City of Inkster, Michigan, Floyd Dent, a 57-yearold longtime autoworker was placed in a choke hold during a traffic stop. Police cameras captured the restraint. During the panicked struggle that followed the choke hold maneuver, Mr. Dent was punched 16 times in the head and tased three times by local police officers. 2

SATURDAY, APRIL 4, 2015

Richard R. Boykin Today’s ordinance, passed as Agenda Item #15-1565, applies to the police force directly under the control of the Cook County Board of Commissioners, the Cook County Hospital Police. On April 14, 2015, the Forest Preserve District Board of Commissioners will take up a similar ordinance, which will ban the use of choke holds by Cook County Forest Preserve Police.

“The current professional consensus in state and federal law enforcement circles is that choke holds by police officers typically cause more danger than they prevent,” Commissioner Boykin said. “In fact, what more often happens is that the choke hold causes the subject of a restraint to panic. And out of panic, a subject will usually react by resisting even further, which intensifies the struggle and can lead to tragic results.” “It is my hope,” Commissioner Boykin continued, “That by moving first on this critically important issue, Cook County can point the way for city and state government by providing an example of a responsible measure that protects both law enforcement officers and the men and women that those officers are sworn to protect.” A similar ordinance banning the use of choke holds by Chicago police officers was introduced in the Chicago City Council by Alderman Ed Burke. In the Illinois General Assembly, five separate bills have been introduced that each attempt to regulate or ban the use of choke holds by law enforcement personnel.

ComEd provides $10 million in financial assistance to customers 2015 assistance funds to help customers facing financial hardship avoid service disconnection ComEd announces it has dedicated $10 million in assistance funds for 2015 to help customers struggling to pay their electric bill. ComEd is urging customers who have fallen behind on paying their electric bill to contact ComEd to see if they are eligible for payment arrangements or financial assistance. The ComEd CARE programs are focused on helping military families, veterans, senior citizens and people who may have experi-

enced a job loss, illness or disability and need help with paying their electric bills. ComEd also offers assistance to non-profit organizations that are experiencing a hardship. Under the Smart Grid law, enacted in 2011, ComEd committed $50 million for five years to help eligible customers with their utility bills. “We realize some customers fall on hard times and need assistance with paying their monthly electric bill,” said Val Jensen, senior vice president of Customers Operations, ComEd. “Our goal is to help our customers maintain continual seamless electric service. This is why we want to ensure that customers who are in need of assistance are

aware of the ComEd CARE programs and how they can receive financial relief during tough times.” Last year through ComEd’s CARE programs, the utility was able to help more than 16,200 cus-

lengthy process that is designed to avoid this outcome. The $10 million for 2015 will provide relief to customers in need and help get them back on track to managing their utility bill. The utility is also running advertisements to increase

tomers maintain their service. Service disconnection is always the last resort, and only occurs after a

awareness of the available funds and to encourage customers in need to apply for assistance.

In addition, through new legislation introduced in the Illinois General Assembly on March 19, ComEd is looking to extend this assistance. Under HB3328/SB1879, financial assistance programs will be extended for another five years through 2021, enabling ComEd and utilities serving more than 3 million customers to contribute $10 million per year to existing financial assistance programs or similar programs offered as a result of the Smart Grid law. Governor Rauner’s proposed cuts to RTA threatens gains $169.5M in Cuts Proposed for FY 2016 Budget Could Impact Riders this Year The Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) recently projected that the cuts described in Governor Rauner’s proposed State of Illinois fiscal year 2016 (FY 2016) budget would level a blow to the operating budgets of CTA, Metra and Pace. It is estimated that the proposed cuts would total $169.5 million region wide—meaning the service boards would receive $169.5 million less in their operating budgets than expected in the FY 2016, which begins on July 1, 2015 and ends on June 30, 2016. The proposed cuts in the Governor’s budget represent anticipated losses in funding from three main state sources: • Reducing the amount the state matches on total regional sales tax revenues by one-third, representing a $127 million cut from the $380

million that the state had budgeted for fiscal year 2016, which begins on July 1, 2015; and • Eliminating $34 million used to administer the state-mandated free ride and the federally-mandated reduced fare programs for seniors and persons with disabilities. These programs cost the region $130 million annually; and • Eliminating $8.5 million used to operate the federally-mandated ADA paratransit service. The impact of these proposed cuts in state funding is severe. The proposed cuts represent a 45% decrease in CTA state funding or a $130 million cut; a 60% decrease in Metra state funding or a $20.8 million cut; a 41% decrease in Pace state funding or a $10 million cut and a 15% decrease in ADA paratransit state funding or $8.5 million cut. “We are working to keep the lines of communications open with Governor Rauner and his team, as it relates to public transportation fund-

ing,” says Leanne Redden, Executive Director of the RTA. “But, let’s be clear. Should these cuts be enacted, it would be difficult to avoid service cuts and fare hikes for CTA, Metra and Pace customers. In a time when our regional system provides two million passenger trips each work day, these cuts could ultimately result in hundreds of thousands of drivers returning to our already heavily congested road and highway system and impact vital connections to jobs and education throughout the region.” Redden went on to reiterate that the transit agencies have spent the last several years making prudent budget decisions. Since 2011, the CTA has wiped out a $308 million structural deficit; rehabbed stations and rail lines, eliminated slow zones, upgraded nearly entire rail and bus fleets, reduced excessive overtime and developed a modern supply chain system. Redden went on to say that with-

out stable funding sources to support operations and capital, the proposed cuts risk unwinding the

progress that the agencies have made to date, and create significant challenges for the future.

Reporter victimized by distasteful tweets (Continued from page 1 ) according to Maya Akai, host of “The Sports Cypher,” which airs on Sunday nights from 9 -11 pm on WVON 1690 AM. Akai broke into the sports radio business a few years ago when she won a WSCR contest that was looking for new talent. In a twist of irony, it was Bernstein who selected Akai as the winner. Akai used her current show as a platform to talk about the issue and her experience at WSCR. While she praised Bernstein and Spiegel for helping her while she was there, she also said “the Score is not really female friendly.” She said many females have complained to management about a “hostile environment” towards women. “Anytime a woman or minority goes to break the glass ceiling, people get disrespectful,” Akai said. www.chicagocrusader.com

“You are constantly having to prove yourself in this industry; proving that you know your sports and what you are talking about in order to gain acceptance from the audience and too many times your coworkers.” Current WSCR host Laurence Holmes was even more critical of his station. Holmes, who also teaches journalism at Columbia College, said he heard the news about the incident via a text from a female friend at CSN Chicago. He said when he read the conversation he was shocked and disgusted. On his show the following day, he talked about the situation for 37 minutes and said he was seriously debating just quitting. “It’s been a really hard day for those of us who like Dan and Matt and who love this radio station,” Holmes said. “In this business when you are dealing with women

in the locker room, it is a really hard life for them. There is a judging that goes on about their credentials. There is misogyny, sexism you name it. All of us can be better about what is going on with it…I was disappointed and angry this morning; I did not find their apologies sufficient. What upsets me for this radio station is the reflection for the rest of us that for the last 12 hours, the radio station has been dragged through the mud. There was public fallout, but no penalty from our station.” Holmes continued by saying the blowback from the incident was immediate as all WSCR personalities who were scheduled to appear on CSN shows were canceled and that may not be changing anytime soon. He said the relationship between CSN and WSCR has been fractured and that listeners will also lose out because, as a profession-

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

al courtesy, many of CSN press conferences with Chicago sports teams were allowed to be played live on WSCR. That has stopped, according to Holmes, but he believes the biggest hit has come as the morale of WSCR employees has plummeted. “There were a lot of people walking around this radio station today who felt very powerless and angry that our management didn’t listen to us or didn’t care about how other people in the hallway felt,” Holmes said. “There were a lot of people with their heads down. I had one of my female students tell me today that this is not a safe place for females to work. I am ashamed and embarrassed of this place right now and I’ve never felt that way.” Holmes continued by telling stories about female students who said they did not want to intern at the radio station and some even

confessed they were so turned off by the industry, they were considering going in another direction. Cristal responded via her Twitter account to the incident. She thanked everyone who contacted her with words of support. “Progress has been made for women in sports, but we still have a long way to go. This incident serves as a gross reminder that women continue to fight every day to be treated equally. My female colleagues share my frustration in knowing the sports industry presents us with challenges of equality in an arena that is often filled with misogyny. We seek the same footing, but when ignorant comments are shared, it shifts the business in the wrong direction.” At the Crusader’s deadline, no disciplinary action had been meted out towards either Spiegel or Bernstein. EDITORIAL

EDITORIAL FROM JULIA TO EMPIREWHAT DO BLACK PEOPLE REALLY WANT? A lot of buzz is circulating recently about a new television series – “Empire.” “Empire” was one of the most watched programs on television this past season, and the finale was a showstopper. Basically, the storyline revolves around a rapper turned music industry mogul played by veteran actor Terrance Howard. Co-starring with him is another veteran actor – Taraji P. Henson, who played Howard’s ex-wife, and who helped him with the business in the early days before it became really profitable. She allegedly took the fall for her husband and ended up spending 17 years in the slammer. The couple has three sons, two who are in the music business as performers, and the third a college trained businessman. There is something in “Empire” for everyone; you have miscegenation, in that one son is married to a white woman. You have homophobia – one son came out as gay. Ageism is involved – the youngest son had a girlfriend who is a “cougar.” You have divorce, from rags to riches progress, betrayal, murder, intrigue, girl fights, great music and more all wrapped up in a package of glamour and more glamour. A stellar cast (and crew) has graced the show including, but not limited to, Patti LaBelle, Jennifer Hudson, Debbie Allen, Mario Van Peeples, Porsha Taylor, Snoop Lion (Dogg), Gabourey Sidibe, Jussie Smollett, Yazz, and the recently excised cast member Malik Yoba. The co-creator of Empire is the award-winning Black filmmaker, Lee Daniels. Empire has its detractors, of course, and one of the main critics is Dr. Boyce Watkins, known as “The People’s Scholar” who has called the show “Ghettofied Coonery.” He has some legitimate concerns about the images that are portrayed about Black people. He basically said, in so many words, that he is embarrassed watching white people watching Black people enjoy this type of fare. In fact, he is not alone – some of the staunchest critics of the show have been African Americans. At the same time, other African Americans are wildly enthusiastic about it. It is ironic that the Fox Network is the producer of “Empire.” Fox is known as being biased and not necessarily progressive when it comes to issues of race, and to see one of its biggest draws this season be a Black program is quite ironic, interesting, and unexpected. “Empire is creating new career avenues for a number of Black industry hopefuls as well as veterans, and a lot of Black people are on track to make quite a bit of money if the trend continues. This does not seem to be enough, however, for “conscious” Black critics, which is understandable, considering the fact that the show depicts Black people in less than a 100% positive light. But then, what show on television depicts any one group in a 100% light? African Americans have complained about being locked out from any real participation in popular entertainment, yet when an opportunity comes along that offers something different, we complain. Back in the day, people complained about the first sitcom that featured a Black woman, “Julia,” played by Diane Carroll, because she was a single parent. And then people complained about “Good Times” because it took place in “the projects.” People complained about “The Cosby Show” because it was said that it was unrealistic, because it depicted a Black doctor, played by Bill Cosby, and his lawyer wife, played by Phylicia Rashad. (As it turns out, this wasn’t unrealistic at all, in that a number of Black couples mirrored that scenario). Black people also complained about the Oprah Winfrey show (too white); “Selma” (turned off by yet another show depicting Blacks in a suffering mode); “The Book of Negroes,” (another offering about suffering Blacks), “12 Years a Slave” (suffering Blacks) and many other television shows and movies too numerous to name. Let’s face facts: television and movies as they are today are not designed to be 100% perfect for any ethnic group, especially Blacks, and they usually have a “socio-political” agenda. The sad fact is that when Black people create, we complain about our productions as well. Will Smith’s fantastic Sci-Fi film, “After Earth,” bit the dust without much fanfare, as did Tim Reid’s “Once Upon a Time...When We Were Colored,” yet the “Housewives of Atlanta” continues to thrive. The question is this - just what do we want? What will satisfy the community? Do we need a taste adjustment? The answer remains to be uncovered. A luta continua. 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Fioretti is a fraud Dear Editor: Immediately after he finished fourth in the mayoral election, Alderman Bob Fioretti said that whoever opposes Mayor Rahm Emanuel in a runoff election that is who Fioretti is backing. That is plain, clear and simple language. He did not qualify it in any way, he said “whoever.” Over this past weekend we found out Bob Fioretti’s word ain’t worth a dime. All of a sudden he can’t back the Mexican running against Rahm Emanuel. He has endorsed Emanuel. Some people are asking why? What I would really like to know is, how much did the mayor buy Fioretti for? It had to be for more than the $81,000 campaign debt Fioretti is holding. He also is notorious for not paying campaign staff for all they are owed. The most logical thing is that in exchange for the support the mayor also promised to send some city business to Fioretti’s law firm. For the last couple of years Fioretti has not been able to practice much law, first with being out sick with cancer and then running for mayor. So he probably has some lawyers who were

filling in for him that he has to pay. It is a good thing to be debt-free, so I have been told. But how does one who sells his word sleep at night? Fioretti is supposed to be a member of one of the city council’s “progressive caucuses.” Part of what makes them progressive is they want to reverse how Rahm Emanuel handles the city. Apparently Fioretti wants to have it both ways. If he had any decency he would resign his council seat now. With his lying ways I do not see how he is fit to represent the Second Ward any longer. COMMENTARY

The Promise of Colombia Part 2 Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist Presidential Program for the Development of the Afro-Colombian Population – that is the name of the program to empower Afro Colombians through entrepreneurship and job creation. The government of Colombia has the answer and we, the National Black Chamber of Commerce, is more than willing to participate in this noble process. As I said in my previous column, government representatives had been courting the NBCC for years. It was like we thought it too good to be true. Here in our own nation government has not been much of a friend and sometimes it can be a foe. We are so glad we finally made that big step. We are starting to write a thorough plan. It will provide opportunity in most industries and promote trade between the two nations. It must be a 50/50 proposition in order to make everyone happy and benefit both nations. The people of Colombia recognize the importance of a Free Trade Agreement which is why they patiently waited almost

Harry C. Alford four years for the U.S. to finally sit down and sign it. Tariffs and duties are now a thing of the past and business is starting to boom. We, children of Africa, must get involved with that in a big way. It will be a job creator and a poverty buster. The quality of life for Blacks in both nations will collectively improve. Wealth building can at last be a reality. Right now, we are assembling various teams of Afro American firms to join Colombian counter-

parts with the ambition of major projects sponsored by the Colombian government and major corporations. For instance, they will be building 50,000 homes and we have been asked to bring those with major capacity to participate. Construction Program Management consists of a few Black owned firms and we must convince them that there is great opportunity in Colombia. Each one must commit to opening an office in Colombia. That office will hire and train locally and become a subsidiary of its American firm. We can emulate such a relationship for engineering, IT and architectural firms. In terms of infrastructure, the nation has budgeted over $14 billion over the next three years. There are utility plants to build and their oil industry is starting to mushroom. One of our Trade Mission participants is currently trying to buy an existing oil company there. This could be big! They love our mission. While we were in Bogota, a small contingent from a neighboring province entered into our meeting room. Their spokesperson announced that they were sent by their Governor to formally ask us to become their partner. “We are

just an hour and a half away from Bogota. Please include us in your plans. We have agriculture, fishing, emerald mining and many infrastructure projects. So, please be our partner.” I shouted “That’s a deal!” and everyone rejoiced. I predict that we will have many investing so much in Colombia that it will, in fact, become their new home. Their welcome is just that real. We have given our affiliate, Camara de Comercio Afro Americana de Colombia, a seat with our Board of Directors. This chapter will form a committee for the purpose of starting a national chapter of the NBCC in each of the other nations in South America. This will take us to a new level. With Suriname we now have two chapters in South America and now we begin the mission of establishing a presence in the other ten sovereign nations. Cali, Colombia will be the continent’s Capital. We have Washington, D.C. for the US/World and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for the Pan African Chamber of Commerce. At our Annual Conference this August, we will have participants from both of these continental capitals. In regards to our trading future

in Colombia, established and very successful entrepreneurs should contact me with their statement of capabilities and my staff will evaluate them. If it all spells success we will begin the task of matching them with their counterparts in Colombia. Their joint venture activity will first begin in Colombia and then spread to the United States and then throughout the African Diaspora via our applicable affiliates. It seems that this is happening so fast. Actually, we have been at this for 22 years and we have finally found the final piece to the “puzzle.” What is next, China? Please don’t laugh as I now have a communication on my desk asking when are we going to establish a chapter in that nation. For instance, the Chinese city of Guangzhou has a Black population of 300,000 and it is increasing its Black population by 30% per year. That’s good and one day the time may come. But right now, we have Colombia on our minds. Mr. Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce®. Website: www.nationalbcc.org Email: halford@nationalbcc.org.

Mr. Wade and the ‘First Family of the Housing Projects’ By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist Approximately three weeks ago, I suffered a mild heart attack. Shortly afterwards, Mr. Robert T. Wade, a longtime family friend in Tuscaloosa, Ala., died at the age of 94. Against the advice of close friends and even some relatives, I attended his funeral last Saturday. To appreciate why I was determined to attend Mr. Wade’s funeral, you have to understand what Mr. Wade meant to me and thousands of Black kids who grew up in the housing projects during the 1950s and 1960s. Most Black communities have a Mr. Wade, a universally respected adult who adopts every child in the community as his own. As I said in my tribute to him at the funeral, we considered the Wades the “First Family of the Housing Projects.” Of course, Mr. Wade was the president and his wife, Mrs. Ella Wade, was the First Lady. To those of us who lived in McKenzie Court, my allBlack housing project, they were our Kennedys. They were royalty and we wanted to be like them. Of the seven Wade children, two of them were males – Archie and Harold. Archie was the oldest and seven years my senior. www.chicagocrusader.com

George E. Curry Harold was five years older than me, about the same age as my youngest uncle, Jesse Harris. The three were the brothers I never had. Hal and Archie were standout athletes and even played professional baseball. But they were scholars first. Mrs. Wade and the girls – Ethel Jean, Glenda, Janice, Phyllis and Karen – in addition

to being beautiful, were classy and always exuded class. And if you happened to be at 73B McKenzie Court around dinner time, which many of us skillfully managed to do, somehow Mrs. Wade had cooked enough food to accommodate young people like me who wanted to get as close to royalty as possible. Mr. Wade was the first Black businessman that I knew. He established Wade Printing Co. in 1953 and most of my life it was on what was then 32nd Avenue, now Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. It was on our route from McKenzie Court to Druid High School. So, every school day, we walked past his shop going to and from school; many times he would be standing outside, which was an open invitation for us to stop by and talk. For those of us who did not grow up with our biological father, Mr. Wade cast an even larger shadow. He became daddy, teacher, counselor and role model, all rolled into one. I can’t think of a time I did not know Mr. Wade. Nor can I think of a time when he was so busy that he didn’t immediately stop what he was doing to talk to me and any other kid who sought his advice. Mr. Wade didn’t just offer us words, he provided the exam-

ple of how to live a moral, blemish-free, admirable life. As I reflect on his life, I am amazed about how many times Mr. Wade encouraged me even after I became an adult. When Charles Steele, a childhood friend, first became president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), he presented us with a president’s award. I was honored just to have my name mentioned in the same breath as Mr. Wade’s. When I gave a commencement address at Alabama A&M University, where he attended and roomed with future civil rights icon Joseph Lowery, Mr. Wade was one of the first persons to greet me when I exited the stage. One time I was back in Tuscaloosa and had just completed an interview at WTUG, the local Black radio station. When I left the studio, there waiting for me was Mr. Wade. Yes, I was one of his boys and as one of his boys, you never wanted to disappoint him. Instead, you wanted to make him proud, you wanted him to know that all of the time and wisdom that he shared with you was not a waste of time. When I listened to others at Weeping Mary Missionary Baptist Church share memories of this impressive man, his accomplishments were remarkable in

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

breath. For me, his greatest contribution was the impact he had on young African Americans, especially boys, during an era of racial segregation. When so many people in society were telling us we couldn’t accomplish anything because we were Black, Mr. Wade convinced us that we could do anything that we could imagine. He reminded us that we would have to work twice as hard to get half the recognition, but we could beat the odds and take our rightful place in the world. Mr. Wade has left us physically, but a part of him remains buried deep in our hearts. He was our shining example. And just like we didn’t want to disappoint him in life, we won’t disappoint him in death, either. George E. COMMENTARY

ECONOMIC INDEPENDENCE IS THE KEY TO OUR FUTURE Dr. Conrad Worrill, Director/Professor, Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS) located at 700 East Oakwood Blvd, Chicago, Illinois, 60653, 773-268-7500, Fax: 773-268-3835. E-mail: c-worrill@neiu.edu, Web site: www. ccics-chicago.org, Twitter: @CCICS_Chicago

Dr. Conrad Worrill In this present era of economic and educational onslaught against the African Community in America, it is important that we under-

stand that the rise of the African Centered Education Movement should be linked to our quest for economic independence. We must free the “African mind” through African Centered Educational activities so that we might better understand the importance of economic self-reliance. One model that we draw strength from in pursuing economic and educational liberation is the model established by the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in the 1920s. The more I read and study about Marcus Garvey, the more I am amazed at the great contributions he made to African people to become a self reliant and self sufficient people. At the core of Marcus Garvey’s program was his urging of African people to acquire education and economic power. As he always started, “A race without power is a race without respect.” When we examine the economic condition of Africans in America, and throughout the world we find one glaring problem—we, as African people do not control our economic resources at the level we should. This is primarily due to our miseducation as a people. In a dis-

proportionate manner, African people depend on the European and Asian world for food, clothing, and shelter. More often than not, the European and Asian worlds are the producers, processors, distributors, and wholesalers. African people are the consumers. This was one of the major problems that the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey addressed during his lifetime and that Minister Louis Farrakhan continues to address. As Dr. Tony Martin writes in his book “Race First,” which is one of the best books written on the works of Marcus Garvey, “Marcus Garvey, unlike his major rivals in the United States, built a mass organization that went beyond civil-rights agitation and protest and based itself upon a definite, well thought out program that he believed would lead to the total emancipation of the race from white dominion.” To implement his program, Garvey set up the Negro Factories Corporation (NFC). Its objective was to build and operate factories in the big industrial centers of the United States, Central America, the Caribbean, and Africa. The NFC established a chain of cooperative grocery stores, a restaurant, a steam

laundry, tailor and dressmaking shop, a millinery store, and a publishing house. Mr. Garvey also established a steamship company, The Black Star Line. He envisioned a fleet of steamers carrying passengers and establishing trade among African people of the United States, Central America, the Caribbean, and Africa. In the summer of 1920, Garvey launched his full blown program at the First Annual Convention of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) of which he was the founder and first President General. On August 2, 1920, after a massive parade of thousands of well drilled, uniformed ranks of the UNIA, 35,000 delegates from all over the United States and some twenty-five countries convened at Madison Square Garden, in New York City. It was, according to the New York Times, one of the largest gatherings in the history of the hall. Dr. Martin explains that, “Central to the ideological basis underpinning Garvey’s program was the question of race. For Garvey, the Black man was universally oppressed on racial grounds, and no matter how much people try to shy away from this issue, the fact is, this

is still true today.” As Malcolm X used to say, it was our Blackness “which caused so much hell not our identity as Elks, Masons, Baptists or Methodists.” If we are ever to become a liberated people this idea must be deeply rooted in the day to day organizing and mobilizing of our people as we seek economic and educational liberation. Far too many Africans in America have abandoned this idea in their organizing projects. Mr. Garvey understood that the foundation of our liberation was economic and educational independence based on racial solidarity. There are numerous lessons we can learn from the legacy of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey. Without economic independence tied to the acquisition of political power, African people in America and African people everywhere will continue to be the subjects of the whims of other people. In this regard, Garvey said, “...you can be educated in soul, vision and feeling, as well as in mind. To see your enemy and know him is a part of the complete education of man... Develop yours and you become as great and full of knowledge as the other fellow without entering the classrooms.”

ECONOMIC RECOVERY? ASK THE FED By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist Has the Great Recession ended, with our economy returning to normal? That may be “conventional wisdom,” or the word we get from those who think that there is no more intervention needed to stimulate the economy. President Obama has bragging rights on the reduction of unemployment rates, and the fact that economic growth is robust. Citing these improvements, our Republican Congress wants to continue to tighten the federal budget belt. Despite this, the Federal Reserve Bank’s Open Market Committee says that there is too much slack in the labor market, and that unemployment rates could be lower than they are now. February’s 5.5 percent unemployment rate is a vast improvement over the double-digit rates we experienced in 2009. And the African American unemployment rate, at an unacceptable 10.4 percent, has also dropped since the Great Recession began. Still, wages have been stagnant, and while more people have 6

jobs, too many of those jobs are in low-wage sectors, and others have not received raises in years. The labor market simply hasn’t recovered from the Great Recession. Workers are still struggling for stability. The Fed seems to be doing more to address labor market challenges than others are. It was expected that the Fed would raise its interest rate, signaling banks and others to raise interest rates as well. Those increases are likely to take place before the end of the year, but not as soon as many had expected. That suggests that while some have embraced the notion of economic recovery, the Fed says we can do better. Some people are experiencing economic recovery, but too many are not. The 10.4 percent Black unemployment rate is closer to 20 percent when the number of people who have dropped out of the labor market, and when other indications of labor market underutilization are considered. The persistent racial unemployment gap is only one of the ways we can measure differences in the recovery experience. The Fed is not the only entity that recognizes that the re-

Dr. Julianne Malveaux covery experience is mixed. The National Urban League’s State of Black America report says that African Americans are in an economic crisis. Why does the Fed recognize a phenomenon that too many others don’t? Why are they hesitating to set interest rates that are consistent with economic recovery? Why aren’t they as concerned about inflation as others are? The Fed seems to be cognizant of the fact that low

unemployment rates combined with low wages are hardly a formula for economic recovery. I’m not a pessimist. Every economic indicator seems to suggest that the economy will continue to improve, with unemployment rates perhaps dropping as low as five percent. That’s good news, and it will be great news for Democrats as we move toward the 2016 elections. New college graduates are getting better offers this year than they got a year ago, although those who graduated in 2008 and 2009 have yet to recover from their recession-related underemployment. There is some cause for optimism in coming months. But the Fed is suggesting that any celebration is preliminary. While I am not a pessimist, I am a realist. President Obama has the opportunity, in these last two years of his presidency, to address that racial economic gap. He has already spoken of income inequality in stronger ways than he did during his first term of office. Now, with little to lose, he might take the opportunity to also talk about Black unemployment, the racial wealth gap, and racial differences in other

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

economic experiences. I’m not sure that our president will step that far out on a limb, but the Fed’s assertion that there are more possibilities for economic improvement perhaps opens the door for him to talk about the ways the overall economy benefits when the African American community is fully engaged in economic recovery. While the Fed says there is room for improvement, and wages are still stuck at the bottom, Congress continues to offer tax breaks to those at the top. There is a lot of rhetoric about economic inequality, but few policymakers have been willing to roll up their sleeves and tackle the issue, working to raise the minimum wage and to actively engage in job creation. While the Fed is likely to increase interest rates before the end of this year, their most recent report should stimulate action to provide better employment opportunities for those who are still waiting to experience economic recovery. The Push to Eliminate Predatory Lending By Charlene Crowell NNPA Columnist In the aftermath of a letter signed by 500 consumer advocates from all 50 states, an unprecedented push for reining in abusive small-dollar, highcost loans has engaged the White House and Capitol Hill. When an increasing number of Americans are striving to keep their financial houses in order, eliminating predatory lending is making news. If advocates prevail, a range of consumer loans, including payday and car title, high-cost installment loans, deposit advance products and openend lines of credit, will all be affected. The benefit for consumers will be an exit from the turnstiles of debt that rob borrowers’ earnings. One major development was the announcement of a long-awaited draft proposal from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). At a public field hearing in Richmond, Va. on March 26, Richard Cordray, CFPB director, explained the significance of proposed regulation. “Extending credit to people in a way that sets them up to fail and ensnares considerable numbers of them in extended debt traps, is simply not responsible lending,” said

Cordray. “It harms rather than helps consumers. It has deserved our close attention, and now it leads to a call for action.” CFPB’s detailed fact sheet identifies all covered loans. The Bureau’s proposal endorses a strong ability to repay principle. When lenders assess ability to repay, they would be expected to determine the borrower can repay without defaulting or re-borrowing. Lenders would begin verifying consumer income and major financial obligations as part of determining the ability to cover their basic living expenses and the loan. There would also be heightened protections for any loan made within 60 days of a previous one. A troubling aspect of the proposal, though, is that it would offer an alternative to determining a consumer’s ability to repay the loan. Lenders could ignore the underwriting requirements if they limit a borrower to no more than six shortterm loans or a total of 90 days of indebtedness in a given year. Other alternatives to determining abilityto-repay would apply to longer-term loans. Consumer advocates maintain that payday lenders have proven to be adept at exploiting loopholes,

Charlene Crowell and as a result, borrowers deserve both prevention and protection measures. Advocates are calling for loopholes to be closed before the rule is finalized. For two panel members at the hearing, CFPB’s proposals were a cause for encouragement as well as concern. Wade Henderson, president and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a coalition of more than 200 human rights organizations, said the ability to ob-

tain and preserve economic security is an essential civil and human right of all Americans. It has also been a nagging concern for its disproportionate impact on communities of color. He said, “They have gone from experiencing redlining and other forms of overt lending discrimination to, in more recent years, predatory and deceptive mortgage and consumer lending often under the guise of ‘easy access to credit’ – with the most devastating consequences resulting from the abusive mortgage lending practices that led to the 2008 financial crisis and Great Recession.” Henderson added, “At the same time, we are concerned about the impact of any kind of safe harbor provision that could continue to expose some borrowers to prolonged and expensive cycles of debt. We are especially concerned about the impact any loopholes could have in states which already outlaw highcost payday lending, because they could create an artificially high nationwide ‘floor’ that the industry could exploit to weaken existing state protections.” Mike Calhoun, president of the Center for Responsible Lending, agreed with Henderson.

“This proposal’s ‘safe harbor’ provision is an invitation to evasion. If adopted in the final rule, it will undermine an ability to repay provision that gives consumers the best hope for the development of a market that offers access to fair and affordable credit,” said Calhoun. Earlier, the center’s research revealed multiple harms caused by payday and other small-dollar loans: The typical car-title borrower takes eight renewals on a single loan and eventually pays $3,391 — over three times the average amount borrowed. On the same day in Birmingham, Ala., President Obama spoke to a large student audience at Lawson State Community College about his concerns about payday lending. “As Americans, we believe there’s nothing wrong with making a profit,” said President Obama. “But if you’re making that profit by trapping hard-working Americans in a vicious cycle of debt, then you need to find a new way of doing business.” While the rulemaking process begins, Senators and Members of the House of Representatives concurrently filed legislation to crack down on predatory lending practices. CCOL young author playlist provides pathway to publication During the finale of the 19th annual Story Week Festival of Writers, presented by Columbia College Chicago, five talented ninth and tenth graders shared their work with a rapt audience in the YOUmedia space of Harold Washington Library Center on Saturday, March 21. The sequence of opportunities that led them there began with their participation in the Chicago City of Learning (CCOL) Young Author Playlist. It will culminate with the publication of their stories in HYPERTEXT Magazine. This is the first of several learning pathways CCOL is developing to meet a variety of professional interests. “We all know how much young talent is in Chicago,” said Sybil Madi-

their Gear Up program at Northeastern Illinois University chose one of the five tracks – Fiction, Journalism, Non-Fiction, Poetry or Script Writing – and engaged in the corresponding online challenges. As they completed the activities of each step, they earned digital badges that unlocked the chance to win a full scholarship to a writing workshop. Chosen by the quality of the work they submitted, select teens met with HYPERTEXT Studio Director Christine Rice for two months on Saturdays. Only those who made it through the course earned a spot on the Story Week stage, as well as the opportunity to see their work published. “These young writers burn so brightly. It

I am a writer.” The first of its kind in Chicago, the Young Author Playlist (YAP) provides youth and teens with the opportunities to practice and share their creative writing and journalism skills, discover new spaces and places citywide to connect with other young writers, and develop a publication-ready collection of work. As participants progress as authors, they are granted access to privileges like touring Chicago newsrooms, shadowing at the Poetry Foundation, working with local professional writers, having professional videos created about their work, and – the ultimate achievement – publication. Students who were introduced to YAP through 10

was magical to see their development over the eight weeks I spent with them,” Rice said. Michael Glenn of Roberto Clemente Community Academy, Isaiah Flores and Alan Perez of Solorio Academy High School, Angel Potts of Corliss High School and Fabian Lomeli of Bogan High School said that some of the most powerful advice Rice gave them was to visualize what you’re writing and that details make a vivid picture. “It’s an opportunity that would’ve been dumb to pass up,” they all agreed. Of the 28 Story Week events that occurred between March 15 and 21, this was the only one featuring youth. A video of each student reading his or her work will be embedded in the digital badges they earned, which are stored in their CCOL accounts and can be shared with colleges and prospective employers. “You are in the same festival as these authors,” Story Week Artistic Director Eric May said to them, holding up an impressive

list of award winning novelists and playwrights. “There are some big names here!” Not only did these teens participate in the same festival as internationally acclaimed writers, but they also shared the microphone with Cyn Vargas, an accomplished and published author from Chicago, on Saturday wrapping up the festival along with her. After proudly filming the reading of his son, Isaiah, Irad Flores of South City said, “This is a great opportunity for the students to develop writing skills and share what’s on their minds. It gives them the freedom to express what they’re going through and imagining.” High school and middle school youth are invited to participate in the Young Author Playlist. hope God blesses him, because I am blessed that he is blessed to bless us.” All in all, Harvey admonished the students to be excited about the opportunity. “It is not my problem if you don’t have much enthusiasm,” he said. “How are you the 100 who are here, [you] trip on that. Sometimes people don’t see the blessing, but God must have a plan for you. Don’t be too cool for this. As bright as you are, you are going to do the stupidest stuff, but you are one dream away from being spectacular.” The motivational speakers for the weekend included Jonathan Sprinkles, Dr. Steve Perry, Sonia JacksonMyles, Dr. Alex O. Ellis, sportscaster Stephen A. Smith, actor Lamman Rucker, among others. “In America, it doesn’t matter where you start, the only thing that matters is where you choose to finish,” said Sprinkles. “Never play the role of victim in your own life story. A person cannot make their own footprint in life when they walk in someone else’s shoes.” Sprinkles shared that his family moved around so much that he thought that he had to be cool, but he admits that his last name just didn’t evoke images of “coolness.” A new speaker this year, but certainly not new to the motivational landscape, was Bishop T.D. Jakes who told the dreamers that they were blessed, gifted and talented people. “Dream for something that you can’t reach or touch; dream a dream that’s worthy of dreaming,” he said. “If you don’t know where you want to go, then any road will get you there.” Jakes recalled his childhood when a grade school teacher wasn’t very encouraging, but he didn’t let that affect him. “I had a glimpse that I was put here for something, and I knew that there was something inside of me. I wish to God that someone would get in touch with my sixth grade teacher and tell her that I have written 38 books and have travelled all over the world.” Renowned chef and author Jeff Henderson led a culinary arts deep dive, but first he shared his story of serving serious prison time for drug dealing. “Prison saved my life. I am sure this is attributed to the direction of Robert Schwentke (“Flightplan”). “Insurgent” is darker than “Divergent,” which did a great job of setting us up for this second installment. However, there were a couple of things that didn’t add up to me, unless I just missed them. When the army attacks the Candor, it seems that Four was affected by the serum. Isn’t he Divergent also? Please set me straight if I missed something. I am a major fan of Veronica Roth’s trilogy and can’t help but love that Chicago is the backdrop for the films (although it would be great if all of them were filmed here but that is yet another story.) I think the films are living up to the spirit of the books. SPEND THE MONEY and see “INSURGENT” in the theater.

The Crusader Gospel Corner Dubbed the greatest night in Gospel music, the 30th Annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas turned “Sin City” into “Salvation City.” Celebrating 30 years, the Stellar Awards was co-hosted with comedic flare by David Mann (“Mann & Wife”), Tamela Mann (“Sparkle”) and Ricky Smiley (“Dish Nation”) during the 2-hour taped telecast premiering Easter Sunday, April 5 at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT on TV One. The Stellar Awards recognizes the year’s best performances in the genre, honors Gospel music icons and acknowledges the accomplishments of individuals instrumental in advocating for the industry. The big surprise of the evening came at the top of the show, when opening act Michelle Williams was joined by former band mates Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland in a showstopping reunion that brought the audience to its feet singing her song, “Say Yes,” a winner for “Best Music Video of the Year.” Ten-time nominee Erica Campbell took top honors, winning six awards including Artist of the Year, The Albertina Walker Female Vocalist of the Year, Contemporary CD of the Year and Urban/Inspirational Single or Performance of the Year. She acknowledged her sister, the other half of award-winning duo Mary Mary in her heartfelt remarks. “Thank you Tina for saying that you needed a break,” said Erica, “... Cause I wouldn’t have done it (‘Help’) if you didn’t say that.” Ricky Dillard and New G followed Campbell with three wins, and Deitrick Haddon tied with The Walls Group for two trophies www.chicagocrusader.com

apiece. On stage after winning the Male Vocalist of the Year award, Haddon expressed gratitude for being recognized following a difficult time in his life. “A couple of years ago I messed up so bad I thought I could never inspire anyone again,” he shared. “I was ready to quit and God spoke to me - He said, if you humble yourself I’ll lift you up to places you’ve never seen. This award is for people who think it’s over for them.” Haddon later brought the house down with a star-studded rendition of “My City” collaborating with Dorinda Clark-Cole, Clareta Haddon, Kierra Sheard, J. Moss, 21:03 and Shelby Five. The New Artist of the Year award was presented to Tasha Page-Lockhart, making her first Stellar Awards appearance, performing “Great Is Your Love” and “Faith Come Alive,” with fellow first-timers The Walls Group. Other masterful performances included Smokie Norful, Jonathan McReynolds totally captured the audience’s attention, Erica Campbell and Pastor Beverly Crawford who all delivered passionate hand-clapping and foot-stomping presentations to the delight of thefilled-to-capacity crowd. The Stellar Awards signature is its powerful collaborations, and this year was no exception with Rance Allen Group, Lisa Knowles & The Brown Singers, as well as Uncle Reece, Willie Moore, Jr. and Canton Jones teaming up to deliver amazing musical numbers. Bishop Paul Morton received the Allstate James Cleveland Lifetime Achievement Award for his accomplishments and was honored in song

Roy Patterson, Effie Rolfe and Ricky Dillard by Kurt Carr & the Kurt Carr Singers with Zarcadi & Crystal singing a medley of “I’m Still Standing.” Al “The Bishop” Hobbs, received the Chevrolet Ambassador Dr. Bobby Jones Legend Award for his career accomplishments on Capitol Hill. Yolanda Adams and Israel Houghton performed “How Awesome Is Our God” celebrating the life of Andraé Crouch which set the tone for one of the most moving speeches of the night from his twin sister, Sandra Crouch. Speaking from the heart on behalf of her legendary sibling, Crouch was honored posthumously with the Thomas A. Dorsey Most Notable Achievement Award for his lifelong contributions to Gospel that influenced artists from every genre and around the globe. “When the storms come and when there are no trophies, no Grammys and there’s no light shining,” she proclaimed, “...you still say to God be the glory.” This year, award show founder and

Executive Producer Don Jackson, implemented a new tradition celebrating the extraordinary achievements in Gospel by presenting the inaugural Stellar Honors Club. In the tradition of the Kennedy Center Honors, The Stellars Honors inductees received a medallion to commemorate excellence in their respective fields. The inaugural awards were conferred upon Pastor Shirley Ceasar, Byron Cage, Clifton Davis, Ricky Dillard, Kirk Franklin, Ambassador Dr. Bobby Jones, Vicki Mack Lataillade, Dottie Peoples and Vickie Winans. Prior to the show, this year’s celebration began with Tye Tribbett hosting a live stream on the star-studded red carpet featuring Gospel greats, television, film and political luminaries such as Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr., Gary Dourdan, Pastor Donnie McClurkin, Pastor Marvin Sapp, Adrienne Baillon, Amber Riley, Denise Boutte, Rev. You can listen to Rolfe Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on urbanpraiseradio.org. Also, big ups to Angela Martin morning host of the “Angela and Mark in the A.M.” received “Best Announcer of the Year. SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING

A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe Lord Don’t Move the Mountain—I believe that some mountains are supposed to be climbed. As Christians, we often want to apply our faith to rebuke the unwanted obstacles and challenges and thrust them into the sea of forgetfulness. However, there are times when being in the valley is God ordained. This revelation really came to mind, while attending a birthday party for my former Intern’s grandmother. At the end of the celebration, a special request came for her to sing “Lord Don’t Move the Mountain.” After hearing this classic that once resonated in churches across America, I gave much thought to the lyrics penned by the legendary Inez Andrews. We are taught that part of the Christian maturation process is to “Say to the mountain be removed and cast into the sea…” (Mark 11:23). That is to say, when trouble arises in your life—use your mustard seed faith to start dumping it into the sea. Initially, I couldn’t understand why my former intern’s grandmother, Ms. Rosa Jones,

Effie Rolfe chose to sing this household favorite. Although, Christendom teaches these lyrics are biblically inaccurate—I received a major eye opener that they speak to truth. I was taught to rebuke any problems that come my way—however, some obstacles can prove more beneficial when left to run the full course. Some church folk might even look at you cross-eyed when you Go Through as if you did something to bring about

this malady. In biblical days—when something was going wrong, everyone looked around for the culprit: cast him out so things would get back on track. Remember Job? His friends provided comfort and consolation during his season of trouble. Yet these same friends later asked him about the “sin” that caused this judgment from God (Job chapters 11-14). Job quickly assured them he had lived a righteous life and Jehovah would vindicate him. Of course, as the story ends—Job was blessed with more than he ever had. Now, let’s get back to the subject of going through. The story of Job is a perfect example that sometimes in this life—you have to Go Through. We now know that it’s the trials and tribulations that empowers us, to make us stronger. It is “fire that brings about pure gold.” (Job 23:10) Lyrics from the late Walter Hawkins’ song Be Grateful reminds us that “God has not promised us sunshine—that’s not the way it’s going to be— but a little rain, mixed with God’s sunshine—a little pain—makes us appreciate

the good times and be grateful.” It is “the going through” the good and the bad that allows the making of a better you and me. Human nature doesn’t want to go through—but the lows are just as crucial as the highs. It is in these valley moments you gain strength to climb mountains and use your faith to cast all troubles into the sea. Endurance is another major component that allows you to become more connected to your source, your purpose and God’s perfect plan. Since hearing Mrs. Jones sing, I have a better understanding of Inez Andrews’ powerful lyrics. Unfortunately, you can’t outgrow the process. So don’t be discouraged when things you have prayed for don’t happen overnight. Perhaps the Lord is telling you there’s no easy way around this one. Just as Jesus prayed three times and asked that the cup of death be removed, he ultimately faced the painful death of the cross. “Not my will but thy will be done” Luke 22:44. So it is with you and me. Sometimes you gotta’ go through—to become a

Morgan Park Black Catholic Church celebrates Jubilee Revival Holy Name of Mary Parish reflects on 75 years of serving Chicago’s Far South Side Holy Name of Mary Parish in Chicago’s Morgan Park community celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2015. During the month of February, the church held its Jubilee Revival in honor of its founding. Holy Name of Mary was the first church in the Archdiocese of Chicago built for Black Catholics. Nearly a week long, the revival featured prominent speakers including Dr. Kimberly Lymore, Pastoral Associate of Faith Community of St. Sabina; Rev. Dr. Michael L. Pfleger, Senior Pastor, Faith Community of St. Sabina; Fr. Paul Whittington, OP, Dominican Formation Director, St. Louis, MO; and Rev. Dr. Reginald Blount, Pastor of Arnett Chapel A.M.E. Church. On the evening of Feb. 9, Pfleger called parishioners to action as he discussed several social ills facing the world including inadequate education, poverty and race relations.

deaths have garnered national attention in recent years. “The killings of Black boys have become justifiable and acquitted—this world is in trouble,” Pfleger said in a pensive tone. George Zimmerman was acquitted of Trayvon Martin’s death in 2013 and former Ferguson, Mo. police officer Darren Wilson was acquitted of Michael Brown’s death in 2014. Pfleger ended his message by summoning Holy Name of Mary parishioners to listen to God’s call to “get up and be the prophetic voice that demands the poor be cared for,” he said. “I think Jesus is looking for some first responders in the pews. He’s looking for some of us. No matter your age— young or old.” The culmination church’s diamond-year celebration will occur with an anniversary banquet on September 12, 2015 at Oak Lawn’s Hilton Hotel Grand Ballroom. Tickets are $75. Holy Name of Mary is also looking for all former students, parishioners and friends to join the festivities. For more information call 773-238-6800.

The Push to Eliminate Predatory (Continued from page 9) Championing a 36 percent cap for all consumer credit transactions were Senators Barbara Boxer (Calif.), Dick Durbin (Ill.), and Sheldon Whitehouse (RI). On the House side, a companion bill was filed by Representatives Steve Cohen (Tenn.) and Matt Cartwright (Penn). “It is unconscionable that these companies are preying on Americans who are struggling to make ends meet,” said Senator Boxer. “This legislation will protect working families by capping the interest rates and fees that lenders can charge consumers.” With regulation and legislation now pending, consumers can still add their voices and influence to this continuing public debate.

Optimism for White Sox and Cubs as baseball season begins By J. Coyden Palmer For the last three seasons baseball fans in Chicago have suffered immeasurably from watching the inept play of both the Cubs and White Sox. But this year, the feeling of doom and gloom is being replaced with renewed optimism as the Cubs young core and the White Sox signing of key veterans has fans on both sides of town dreaming about their teams making the playoffs. Now in the fifth year of general manager Theo Epstein’s rebuilding plan, along with the actual physical rebuilding that is taking place at Wrigley Field, Cubs fans are ready to start seeing results. Epstein increased their appetite for a winning team when he said last September: “We proved we can be very competitive within this division and when you have a chance to compete you should set your sights high and that means our goal is the NL Central title next year.” With that one bold statement, followed by the acquisition of free agent pitcher John Lester, Cubs fans and management will be disappointed if there is no post-season play this year. The Cubs completely rebuilt their minor league system under Epstein and now many of those players; Kris Bryant, Starlon Castro, Anthony Rizzo, Junior Lake, Jorge Soler

and others are ready to start making big contributions to the major league team. Although it was announced earlier this week that Bryant will start in the minors, which touched off controversy, he is expected to be called up within the first few weeks of the season. All of the baseball experts agree the Cubs should be much better than the team that lost nearly 300 games over the last three seasons. How well their starting and relief pitching is will most likely be the key. New manager Joe Maddon will bring a World Series experienced leader in the dugout for the first time since Lou Piniella left. With an opening series this weekend against the rival St. Louis Cardinals, the Cubs will be tested coming right out the gate. On the South Side, Sox fans too are drinking the kool-aid in believing their team is headed for post season play. The additions of proven hitters Melky Cabrera and Adam LaRoche along with pitchers David Robertson and Zach Duke to solidify the back end of the bullpen are giving Sox fans positive vibes. Last year the Sox bullpen was atrocious and they lost more games after having leads past the 7th inning more than any other team in the league. Gone are many of the players responsible for 2014’s terrible pitching performances and with last year’s first-round pick Carlos Rodon on

JUNIOR LAKE OF THE CUBS and Micah Johnson of the White Sox are two of the up and coming African American players in their respective organizations. Baseball season begins in early April and fans of both teams are optimistic about their team’s upcoming season.

Turner passes resolution honoring achievement of local tennis star In honor of women’s history month, State Rep. Arthur Turner, D-Chicago, passed a resolution recognizing the achievements of Chicagoan Katrina Adams who recently became the CEO of the United States Tennis Association. “Katrina began playing tennis at the Martin Luther King Jr. Boys Club on the West Side,” Turner said. “Through college and professional play Katrina represented our community proudly and I am glad to congratulate her latest achievement.” Adams grew up in Chicago, attended Whitney Young High School and learned to play tennis at the Martin Luther King Jr. Boys Club on the city’s West Side. She attended Northwestern University, leading the Wildcats to a Big Ten Championship in 1986. She played tennis professionally for 12 years, ranking as high as 67th in the world in singles play and 8th in doubles. Adams is the first African-American, fourth woman and first professional athlete to be named president of the U.S. Tennis Association. www.chicagocrusader.com

Katrina Adams “While our community faces many challenges, we also need to bring equal attention to good news and our neighbors’ achievements,” Turner added. “I want to continue to recognize outstanding members of our community

and encourage everyone to share the stories of other outstanding, homegrown leaders with me.” For more information please call Turner’s full-time constituent service office at 773-277-4700.

the cusp of making the team at some point in 2015, players themselves seem to have a new attitude under manager Robin Ventura who is going into his fourth season at the helm. The White Sox lineup is sure to be fun to watch. Gone are Adam Dunn and Paul Konerko, who often clogged up the base paths in the rare occasion they reached base last season. Rookie Micah Johnson led the minor leagues in stolen bases the last two seasons and will bring much needed speed to the lineup. The aforementioned LaRoche is expected to split time at first base and designated hitter with last year’s American League Rookie of the Year, Jose Abreu and provides power in the lineup. Sox fans are also optimistic Adam Eaton and Avisail Garcia will continue to provide a strong defensive outfield, along with the addition of Cabrera. The White Sox are expected to have one of the strongest pitching rotations in the league once ace Chris Sale comes back from a broken foot sometime in late April or May. Jeff Samardzija, acquired via a trade with Oakland in the offseason will be the number two starter followed by Jose Quintana, John Danks and Hector Noesi. If something goes wrong however,

don’t be surprised to see Rodon added to the mix. If all else fails, both teams and their fans are also thinking divine intervention could come into play this year. Losing legends Ernie Banks and Minnie Minoso over the winter fans are hoping they will be getting some blessing from above. Regardless of what both teams do this year, the annual Sox/Cubs series is sure to be entertaining after fans complaints seem to have gotten through to Major League Baseball officials. This year’s games will be on weekends during the warm summer months as opposed to previous years when games were played during the work-week during the daytime hours and ticket sales plummeted. The White Sox will play the Cubs at Wrigley Field July 10-12. The Northsiders will come to U.S. Cellular Field to take on their civic rivals August 14-16.
