Cong. Rush sets noon deadline Friday for arrest of CVS shoplifter murderer By J. Coyden Palmer Surrounded by the mother of homicide victim Anthony Kyser and several religious leaders on Tuesday May 18, Congressman Bobby Rush sounded like a cowboy when he said county prosecutors and police have until noon Friday to arrest the people involved in killing an alleged shoplifter last week on the city’s Southwest side. Rush is enraged that a 35-year-old Black man was murdered because he allegedly stuffed some crayons and toothpaste down his pants and exited a CVS pharmacy store on 26th and Pulaski May 8th. Rush said police Superintendent Jody Weis and Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez are ignoring their duties. “A man’s civil and human rights were violated. He lost his life,” said Rush during a press conference at his church on 64th and Harvard May 18th. “Though Mr. Kyser was only suspected of shoplifting, we have something in this country called due process. There was no capital crime committed here.” According to police, Kyser was chased down and captured in an alley a few blocks from the store. One employee put Kyser in a headlock to try to subdue him. It is also reported that at some point an off-duty deputy from the Cook County Sheriff ’s

Department came onto the scene and allegedly pulled her weapon. What happened after that is still under investigation, said a spokesperson for the Chicago Police Department. “What kind of society are we living in

where an unarmed man’s life can be taken by a group of vigilantes?” Rush asked. “If he was stealing the police should have been called and he would have paid for his breaking the law—but I am sure his sentence would not have been death. His ac-

tions, such as retail theft or running from the scene, do not justify him being chased down an alley to be beaten and strangled to death by store employees.” The Crusader attempted to find out (Continued on page 3)

Weis: Stronger community ties with police, not National Guard can deter crime By La Risa Lynch Bringing in the National Guard to curb violence plaguing city neighborhoods dominated a Seventh Ward public safety meeting last week where Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis insisted that police are better able to handle violence than the military. “The National Guard is the solution if you are willing to give up your first, fourth, fifth and six amendments,” Weis told more than 100 residents who packed Rainbow Beach Park fieldhouse. “If you are willing to give up your right to assemble on a corner and have free speech then the National Guard is the solution,” he added. Law enforcement’s mission is different from the military, Weis explained, adding

that the police’s goal “is a successful prosecution.” “That is not their mission,” said Weis who served in the U.S. Army. He cited the shooting deaths of four Kent State University student killed by the National Guard in 1970 as reason for not using the National Guard. “I don’t know if you want 18-year-old men and women driving in Humvees with fully automatic M-16s, not know the streets of Chicago … maybe thinking they hear a shot, maybe seeing a group of four or five guys on the corner where they think the shot came from and they go out and shoot all four or five guys.” Weis said he understands residents’ frustration, but sensationalized headlines in (Continued on page 2)

CPS students begin campaign to educate peers about sexually transmitted diseases By J. Coyden Palmer A new poster created by a Chicago Public Schools student to make his fellow students more aware of sexually transmitted diseases was unveiled earlier this week at Austin High School on the West Side. Ronald Johnson, a student at Corliss High School, created the poster as part of the ‘Stop. Think. Wait.’ contest. Johnson said teens are often vulnerable to pressure from their friends to start engaging in sexual behavior before they are emotionally and mentally ready to handle the responsibility. “Often students get caught up in the passion of the moment and lose sight of what can happen to them if they are not aware of the consequences” said Johnson, who last year was a finalist in the ‘Expression Against HIV/AIDS Awareness Contest.’ “This not only means the possibility of getting a disease, but also the chance of an unwanted pregnancy and destruction of future plans, goals and dreams.” Walgreen’s and CPS have been partnering on the issue of teen sexual behavior for the past few years. Most of the campaigns have focused on teen abstinence. ‘Stop. Think. Wait.’ is a PSA campaign, developed, in-part by high school students, to provide teens with the facts about sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and encourage them to not participate in risky sexual behavior. It’s a hot topic on the political scene as former President George Bush was an abstinence advocate but his critics claimed that policy was not realistic in dealing with today’s youth. They say a more comprehensive approach is necessary. Last year President Obama slashed the budget for abstinence-only programs. He has shifted more to a prevention of teen pregnancy philosophy. Even with that approach, many say more needs to be done to combat the problem of STD rates among teens. According to statistics from the Chicago Department of Public Health, Chicago ranks first and second respectively for the highest rates of gonorrhea and chlamydia in the country for youth between the ages of 15 to 19. The Obama administration is currently in the process of putting together the final aspects of a strategy to address the issue of HIV/AIDS. “I and other workers on the frontline believe the abstinenceonly programs that have been the federal policy for nearly 10 years, do little to affect the HIV/AIDS rates and in fact may make them worse,” said Tabasha Holloway, who works for a non-profit organization in southern Illinois that works with youth on the issue of STDs and teen pregnancy. “A 2

more comprehensive approach that includes abstinence will reach more youth because there will always be those who engage in sexual activity, so you need to teach them how to protect themselves. With all of the latest advances in technology in safer sex products, it’s no reason we shouldn’t be making this information available to the most at risk groups, including teens.” Because the Bush policies handcuffed many school districts on what and how they could teach the subject, many districts are looking for direction under Obama. A spokesperson for CPS said the issue is critical, especially since there are high teen pregnancy rates in some schools. “CPS is committed to reducing the high rates and numbers of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, and unintended pregnancies among adolescents,” said Ira Rounsaville, from CPS’s Office of Specialized Services. “We have increased the quality, availability and effectiveness of educational programs and services designed to prevent disease, improve health and increase the quality of life by addressing barriers to learning,” he said. Part of the anticipated Obama policy on the issue will focus on making more public/private partnerships to educate the public. The Chicago-based Project IN-

Weis: Stronger community ties with police, not National . . . (Continued from page 1) April stirred calls for the National Guard. But Weis added that overall violent crime in the city is down 11 percent and murders are down 40 percent in the Seventh Ward. To combat a wave of violence associated with summer heat, Weis noted more manpower will be deployed in the 9 percent of city blocks notorious for the city’s high crime numbers. That same real estate was responsible for the bulk of crime in 2008 and 2007, he added. The department, he explained, is doing more pinpointed deployment of resources in places before crime is committed. The key to curbing violence, Weis contends, is a strong relationship between police and community. He stressed the importance of attending beat meetings and organizing block clubs. Yet, the biggest challenge to police is the code of silence on the streets. The no snitching rule perpetuates the cycle of violence, Weis said, adding that not snitching benefits the offender who is free to hurt more people. “Today’s offenders become tomorrow’s victims,” he said, adding Saturday, May 22, 2010

Police Superintendent Jody Weis says he is not in favor of using the National Guard patrolling city streets. that most offenders live in the community. “They weren’t coming from the suburbs and shooting people.” However, South Shore resident Pearl Fountain wants the National Guard.

“Policemen, I think you are doing a good job, but I think you need some help,” Fountain said. “I’m 80 years old, and I never (seen) so many kids getting killed.” Her granddaughter, she added, lives three blocks from school and her parents pick-up her up every day because “they are afraid to let (her) walk back and forth.” Another South Shore resident, who declined to giver her name, agreed with Weis. The resident recalled how her relatives were treated by the National Guard after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans. “They treated those people like they were enemies,” she said. “They are trained to do war. They are not trained to serve and protect normal citizens.” Ald. Sandi Jackson also is against using the National Guard. She said they are not suited to handle the city’s particulars. The Black community needs more jobs, because crimes like burglaries are economically driven so individuals can support their families, Jackson explained. “I don’t want to turn our community into a militarized zone,” she said.

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

Also discussed at the meeting was the use of the police department’s blue light camera system. Since 2006, more than 4,000 arrests were made from the camera. Weis said the department is looking at technology to expand camera use, including hidden or covert cameras. He said the police also has the infrastructure to tap into a business’s private security camera to put additional eyes on the streets. The cameras also have been successful in tracking non-criminal activity. He cited the death of former Chicago Board of Education President Michael Scott as an example. The cameras enabled police to see Scott was alone in his final hours. “It gave us further indication that it was a suicide rather than any type of foul play,” Weis noted. However, Jackson favors the use of covert cameras and even offered up her entire ward as a pilot project for their installation. Placing covert cameras throughout the ward makes it impossible for criminals to know where the cameras are, she said. “I like what I see in London. I have no problems with big brother looking at every single camera,” Jackson added. The Chicago Crusader

New poll confirms majority of Chicagoans want Walmart Strategy One survey shows more than 70 percent support more Walmart stores in the city;72 percent in favor of new store at Pullman Park An overwhelming majority of Chicagoans are in favor of more Walmart stores in the city and specifically, a new store at Pullman Park, according to a new survey. The poll, conducted by StrategyOne Research and commissioned by Walmart, shows more than seven-in-ten support Walmart expanding in the city, even when the question says, “in your area.” When asked specifically about a new store on the corner of 111th Street and I-94, 72 percent affirm that position. Less than one-in-five are opposed. StrategyOne is a full service strategic consulting and research firm and is a subsidiary of Daniel J. Edelman, Inc. Additionally, by nearly a twoto-one margin (61 to 32 percent), respondents support mayoral approval of the expansion of Walmart through administrative action if the city council fails to approve it. “This poll confirms what we have heard consistently from residents: Chicago wants Walmart,” said Julie Murphy, Senior Vice President of Midwest Operations for Walmart Stores, Inc. “Chicagoans trust Walmart to deliver the quality jobs and affordable grocery options that they want and need.” From consumers and suppliers to city officials, Chicago is talking about Walmart. See what they

have to say by visiting: www.walmartchicago.com. “It is hard not to be impressed with this level of support,” said Stanley B. Greenberg, senior counselor to Edelman and respected pollster. “With jobs and the future economy the greatest worries, Chicagoans are welcoming businesses that bring new jobs to the city. Rather than a polarizing issue, Walmart building a new store is a galvanizing issue drawing support across ethnic and geographic lines.” The StrategyOne poll also showed that support is strongest on the South side with 79 percent favor building, while only 17 percent oppose. Support remains high across the city, with 66 percent and 70 percent on the North and West sides of the city, respectively, favoring expansion. AfricanAmerican and Hispanic residents are the most supportive - with support levels at 74 and 76 percent respectively - but more than two-thirds of white Chicagoans also support the project.

About Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT), or “Walmart,” serves customers and members more than 200 million times per week at more than 8,000 retail units under 53 different banners in 15

countries. With fiscal year 2009 sales of $401 billion, Walmart employs more than 2.1 million associates worldwide. A leader in sustainability, corporate philanthropy and employment opportunity, Walmart ranked first among retailers in Fortune Maga-

“Clearly, my residents demand that that the Pullman Park project moves forward and that it includes a Walmart,” said Alderman Anthony A. Beale of the 9th Ward. “Given these polling results, it’s reassuring to know that my residents are not alone on this issue.” The Strategy One Poll also is consistent with recent surveys conducted by The Chicago Tribune and the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce.

Cong. Rush sets noon deadline Friday for arrest . . . have a previous arrest record. His mother, Ann Marie Kyser described him as the love of her life and the two became closer after his older brother was murdered a few years ago. Mrs. Kyser admitted her son may have had his problems, but he didn’t deserve to die in this manner. “They’re saying a shoplifter paid with his life; wrong my son paid with his life,” she said. “I’m hoping he wasn’t stealing, but if he did, he still does not deserve this. That was my son! I gave birth to him! God didn’t snatch his life away from him, so how dare you,” she asked angrily. Rush was asked why there was not widespread public outrage surrounding this case, especially among Black Americans. He believes there is a “quiet storm brewing.” When pressed further, citing this point there have been no protests and the case is not be-

what was the CVS policy regarding employees leaving a store to pursue a thief, but spokesmen for the company were not commenting on the case. Attorney James Montgomery has been secured by Kyser’s family. Montgomery believes CVS employees and the off-duty deputy who was at the scene all committed crimes. “If this had happened in another community, not only would the vigilantes been indicted immediately, but the police officer would be released from her duties and charged with malfeasance as she had control of the situation and did nothing,” Montgomery said. Pat Hill is the Executive Director of the African American Police League. She too has issues with how the situation was handled by the off-duty deputy.

“We are trained that once you announce your office, you are now acting in a professional capacity,” Hill said. “If you are witnessing a crime, such as a person being beat down, you are in control of that situation. If you do not demand control and assure that the crime cease and desist, you have now become complicit in that crime.” Hill went on to say that the failure of the police department to fully investigate the matter is a “dereliction of duty” on the part of Weis. She also said the Cook County Sheriff ’s Department also needs to be investigating the actions of their deputy. A spokesperson for Sheriff Tom Dart said no investigation had begun and referred all questions about the matter to the Chicago police. Kyser was a married, 35-yearold, unemployed barber who did

ing talked about in the community, Rush said: “There is a widespread universal outcry and sense of injustice around this case,” Rush said. “We are facing a lot of things in our community including crime, bad healthcare, bad schools and unemployment. So we have to break through that clutter because we cannot exist in a city where a person is killed by vigilantes and law enforcement officials try (to) sweep it under a rug.” Dr. Christopher Cooper is a former Washington D.C. police officer, who now practices as a Civil Rights attorney in Chicago and is the former leader of the National Black Police Association. Cooper sees a dangerous trend nationwide in how law enforcement agencies are policing Black communities. He said more departments are becoming Saturday, May 22, 2010

militarized and said the sentiment is growing as more than one major city has looked into bringing in the National Guard in their Black communities. Cooper said while Weis and city officials have publicly been against that plan, they are slowly militarizing more aspects of the current CPD. “You see more officers carrying automatic weapons, using concussion grenades and dressing in a more military style uniform,” Cooper said. “This is not the way to police our community, especially given the history between law enforcement and our community. These types of incidents, including the recent tragedy in Detroit where a seven-year-old Black girl was shot and killed by police, only make it harder for officers to do their jobs because it messes with the fragile trust the community has with the police.” 3

OPINION

EDITORIAL Hatred And Ignorance Revealed On A “Hidden Field” A book entitled “On a Hidden Field” by Dennis Allums and Betty Allums, PhD, chronicles the life and times of Salaya Evans, a 5-year-old part African American, part Italian girl who spoke 86 languages, and who was born in 1959. The book, written in novel form about allegedly true events, deals with a world-wide sub-government that allegedly has no boundaries and routinely recruits extremely gifted youth in research projects ultimately for military purposes. Game Theory is a cornerstone of much of this research. Because of the oppressive tactics used to extract information, Salaya disappeared for a number of years, only to surface later because a 5-year-old companion and confidant told authorities of her whereabouts, and they knew that by tracking him they would eventually find her. Salaya, who later became Katelena Jones, allegedly predicted the future, and to date, according to the author, numerous predictions have come true, including those about Hurricane Katrina, 9/11, increasing homelessness and economic turmoil in America. As a teen she was surrounded by a group of brilliant youth companions who made it a point to do research in the field of forecasting the future. One of Salaya’s most poignant predictions was that of what she referred to as “On a Hidden Field.” She drew a series of boxes that were connected by lines, and giving hints of this field described it in the following manner: 1) It would be the only place where billions of people could be on the same field at the same time; 2) That it would be a new language represented by a fourletter acronym; 3) That it would be the only way information could be delivered without local, national, or international intervention, and finally, 4) It would be on a “Hidden Field.” If you connect all of the dots, the inevitable conclusion is that Salaya/Katelena provided us with the description of the Internet. The four-letter acronym representing a new language would be HTML, i.e., hypertext mark-up language, that is the foundation of Internet posting. Whether you buy the story about Salaya Evans or not, you can certainly view the Internet as a “hidden field.” Today, this field is revealing a humanity that is profoundly disturbed and filled with race hatred, violence, and general inanity. If you walk down an urban street or in rural by-ways, what you generally see are average people going about the business of being themselves. You do not hear the chatter in their heads. You would not guess that they harbor thoughts so dark and chilling that they would make you cringe. Yet, when they are hiding behind a keyboard typing these thoughts onto the Internet, the chatter that is non-apparent when seeing them becomes very real. The consequence of this is that today, on the hidden field of the Internet, almost every comment/post solicited from the public in response to almost any topic is peppered with language revealing hatred, violence, ignorance, intolerance, obscenity and more. The posts spewing race hatred, in particular, are crescendoing at an alarming rate, and one wonders if the flames will envelop the real world resulting in a racial conflagration. According to the authors of “On a Hidden Field,” one of the main reasons Salaya/Katelena and her cohorts were so interested in predicting the future was to allow us the option of preventing the negative results of our actions. If we know what lies ahead, it might help us temper our behavior. But based on the state of the world today as revealed by the hidden field of the Internet, very few are taking seriously the possible consequences of our actions. If things don’t change, we will rush headlong into social annihilation. A luta continua. 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Identify unsung heroes and heroines Dear Editor: A hero can mean vastly different things. It could be the person who delivers meals to you if you are homebound, the mother who reared you or a cultural figure who stood up for your race, religion or gender. In April and as churches choose to do so in 2010, the African American Lectionary and African American congregations throughout the country will be recognizing contemporary heroes and heroines. The African American Lectionary, a practical tool that offers insights to major social issues impacting our country, has launched this material to celebrate and give thanks to the many real-world heroes that inspire and serve our communities. There is certainly no shortage of heroes and sheroes in African American culture. We have seen the evidence of these freedomfighting heroes through courageous leaders such as Harriet Tubman and Nat Turner, writers like Ida B. Wells and Samuel Cornish, activists such as Martin Luther King, Jr., and political leaders such as Representative James Clyburn and President Barack Obama.

Our heroes and heroines work daily on our behalf for our communities, congregations and our nation. But I look to my community to not only recognize heroes of the past and those of national influence, but also to identify every day, unsung heroes and heroines of our time. In my eyes, a contemporary hero or heroine stands strong in the face of adversity and stands up for those who cannot speak for themselves. Whether it is the single mother providing for her children, an inner-city school teacher working hard to provide students with the tools they need to live a better life or a young volunteer mentoring a little brother or working with a disabled person, these heroes and heroines deserve our recognition as well. Our country’s recession has resulted in an all-time high of credit defaults and home foreclosures. According to a recent study by the Economic Policy Institute, the unemployment rate for Blacks will rise 8.6 points while the unemployment rate for whites will rise only 5 points from the beginning of the recession until the third quarter of 2010. These realities create the need for contemporary heroes in our community. In order to rebuild our communities and help those most in need we must all find the hero within ourselves. We cannot simply depend on past heroes or current public figures to accomplish all of the heavy lifting. The change we’d

all like to see in our communities starts from inside—within ourselves, and spread to our families, our communities, the nation and the world. We should all work to find the modern day hero and heroine inside ourselves and recognize those in our community who should be acknowledged. Without people like them, the weak, poor, disabled and disadvantaged would be with-

BEYOND THE RHETORIC

Beware of the Value-Added Tax By Harry Alford NNPA Columnist I’m reminded of Emperor Nero playing the violin as Rome burns to the ground. Our elected officials continue to write pork barrel projects and take our deficit into territory that threatens our very future. We are in debt by $13 tril-

Harry C. Alford lion dollars and virtually ignore that. By printing more paper dollars we increase our reliance on our number one debt holder – China. Greece has fallen with Argentina, Portugal, Ireland and Spain getting ready to drop in like

fashion. The bailouts are coming from the International Monetary Fund, IMF, which gets 17 percent of its funding from the American taxpayer. My brothers and sisters, we are on the verge of the greatest depression in the history of the world and our politicians are spending money we don’t have. The only way out of this mess is to seriously control our spending and lower the current budgets. But, oh, the wolves are of another mind. I believe what they are going to try and do is use that age old oppressive system used when kings and pharaohs would get into financial trouble. They are going to tax us in a hellish fashion. There is even talk about emulating the evil European tax system. That is the Value-Added Tax commonly known as the VAT. It is the VAT that causes Europeans to pay $8 for a gallon of gasoline; $20 dollar hamburgers; $600 for a hotel night. The VAT in the United States would change our entire civilization and create poverty and government abuse like never before. The VAT is a scheme of many

tax levels. For every transaction there will be a VAT assessed. In England, the VAT is 20 percent of each transaction. Here is how it works. Arabs drill oil from the ground and sell it to British Petroleum. Zap goes a 20 percent tax. BP takes the oil home and runs it through a refinery. Zap goes another 20%. BP sells it to a major distributor and zap goes another 20 percent. That major distributor sells it to a minor distributor and another 20 percent is added on. The minor distributor sells it to your gas station and zap goes another 20 percent. Eventually there you are pumping gasoline into your car. That oil which originally cost about $1 a gallon as raw oil is now hitting you for $8 dollars. If there is a VAT most of you have probably already bought your last car. Let’s say Ford now has a car they manufacture and sell to dealers for about $25,000. With the VAT in place the taxation of all the parts assembled to that one car would take it up to approximately $40,000. When the dealer buys it the VAT would take it up to $48,000. When you select the car from the dealer the

final VAT will take the cost up to $57,600. That will take a family car to areas reserved for the rich and powerful only. The population of the rich and famous is going to shrink in this nation. We will quickly be going to European standards – very old money wealth for a few and massive socialistic nanny state kept population of the masses. May God save us from the plight of Europe and other socialistic societies. Remember, millions of Europeans fled that system to come and enjoy our form of capitalism. Why on earth would our politicians try to emulate something that doesn’t work? The answer to that question is really rather simple. They want absolute power. Absolute power reserves the wealth for them and makes us indebted to them and destined to a future of servitude. This is a power grab, a supreme power grab and America’s democracy is threatened. It is time for us to make it very clear to those who want to control us and reduce our nation into servitude, we will fight and rebel via a super flushing at the election

polls this fall. If they can’t reduce taxes between now and November, then it becomes the responsibility of the voters to fire them all. That’s right – don’t fight to keep them from raising taxes, demand they actually lower them! They have gone too far already. Imagine a nation with no income taxes and no corporate taxes. The citizens would have serious money to purchase, invest and save. Corporations would have no taxes to pass on to the consumers. The cost of living would significantly drop. This ideal nation would simply have a national sales tax on the end users of all products. The more you have; the more you spend and the greater the tax coffers will be to fund the nation. You may say I am dreaming. But if any great people can save this world, it will be those living in America. Watch out when they start talking about the VAT. Your future will be at stake. Questions Linger about Obama’s Second Supreme Court Pick By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist After pretending to be seriously considering up to 10 people for appointment to the Supreme Court, including two AfricanAmerican women, President Obama did what most of us predicted all along: He selected Solicitor General Elena Kagan to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Justice John Paul Stevens. I wrote more than a month ago that Kagan is a less than ideal appointment and nothing in recent weeks has changed my opinion. I expect that Kagan will be fine on civil rights issues but could be a disappointment when called on to protect civil liberties or reign in executive powers. Why not get a candidate who will be reliably supportive of both civil rights and civil liberties? The fact that we’re debating whether Kagan would be a good appointment to the court underscores the depth of the problem. Not surprisingly, major civil rights leaders and Black Harvard law professors have been busy in recent weeks writing articles in support of Kagan, the first female dean of Harvard Law School. Charles J. Ogletree, Jr., for example, wrote articles for Newsweek The Chicago Crusader

and www.theroot.com defending “my colleague.” He observed that as dean of the Harvard Law School, Kagan requested to be appointed the Charles Hamilton Houston Professor of Law instead of the customary Sir Isaac Royall Professor of Law. Houston was the law school’s first African-American graduate. Royall was a major slave trader and sold his slaves in Antigua to help create the Harvard Law School. By electing to hold a chair in honor of Houston instead of Royall, demonstrates “a compelling sense of her commitment to diversity and equality,” according to Ogletree. It was the correct thing to do, but was hardly compelling. A more accurate yardstick is what happened on her watch as Harvard’s law dean. Ogletree says: “Since Elena Kagan became dean, the number of African American students admitted, particularly Black males (given the national decline in African American males in colleges and universities), is simply astonishing. From 2003 until she ended her deanship in 2009, the number of African American students has been at an all time high. Her first year, 10% of the students were African American and the total minority student body was 29%.

George E. Curry That percentage has increased in each category over the years. As a result, 31 percent of the entering class at Harvard Law School over the past 9 years is a record and a sign of her commitment.” That is significant progress. But Kagan was dean for six years, not nine, therefore she should not be given credit for what happened after she left Harvard. Black student enrollment, however impressive, is only part of the picture. Three law professors – Anupam Chander of the University of California-Davis; Luis Fuentes-Rohwer of Indiana and Angela Onwuachi-Willig of the University of Iowa – co-authored an article on

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

Kagan’s diversity record. They wrote, “The first woman Dean of Harvard Law School had presided over an unprecedented expansion of the faculty — growing it by almost a half. She had hired 32 tenured and tenure-track academic faculty members (nonclinical, non-practice). But when we sat down to review the actual record, we were frankly shocked. Not only were there shockingly few people of color, there were very few women. Where were the people of color? Where were the women? Of these 32 tenured and tenure-track academic hires, only one was a minority. Of these 32, only seven were women. All this in the 21st Century.” Kagan defenders correctly state that the law faculty, not the dean, vote on whom to hire in the department. But Kagan backers can’t have it both ways: They can’t, as Ogletree did, brag about how she increased student diversity at Harvard and not have her accept responsibility for the dismal number of tenure-track African-Americans. I am most concerned about Kagan’s stated “love” for the Federalist Society, the network of law students, professors, lawyers and judges whose stated goal is to move the judiciary to the right. At one Saturday, May 22, 2010

Harvard gathering of the Federalist Society, they gave Kagan a standing ovation. Do you think Justices John Roberts or Antonin Scalia would ever receive a standing ovation from the ACLU or the National Bar Association? We need to know why Right-wingers are cheering Kagan. At this point, no one knows for certain what kind of justice Kagan will be. But we know this: When Roberts, Scalia and Clarence Thomas were appointed to the Supreme Court, there was absolutely no doubt about how they would vote on issues most important to AfricanAmericans. Given the opportunity to make two Supreme Court appointments in as many years, we shouldn’t be wondering what kind of justices the president is appointing to the Supreme Court. But that’s exactly what we’re doing. George E. Curry, former editor-in-chief of Emerge magazine and the NNPA News Service, is a keynote speaker, moderator, and media coach. COMMENTARY Beyond the Backpack”: Dora the Explorer Helps Prepare Children for School

Worrill’s World

REPARATIONS, MAAFA, AND GENOCIDE (Dr. Conrad Worrill, National Chairman Emeritus of the National Black United Front (NBUF) located at 1809 East 71st Street, Suite 211, Chicago, Illinois, 60649, 773-493-0900, Fax# 773-493-9819, E-mail: nbufchic@sbcglobal.net, Web site: nbufront.org))

Is every child in your community ready to start school? This may seem like a strange question to families still finishing up their plans for summer vacation. But in reality, it’s never too soon to start making sure children are prepared for their first day of school. That includes children for whom kindergarten is still a few years down the road. So I’m pleased that Nickelodeon has launched a new initiative to help provide preschoolers the resources, skills, and support they will need to be well-prepared for school and ready to start their school years on the right path. The Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) is joining the National Parent Teacher Association, actress Salma Hayek Pinault, and others in partnering with Nickelodeon on this important school readiness campaign. The initiative was launched as part of the celebration of the tenth anniversary of Nickelodeon’s popular Latina preschool character Dora the Explorer. It’s named “Beyond the Backpack,” taking its title from the well-stocked backpack that keeps Dora ready for every adventure. Nickelodeon hopes to similarly prepare young children for the big adventure of starting school. As they explain, “The first five years of life are critical to kids’ lifelong development. However, too many children enter kindergarten with physical, social, emotional and cognitive limitations that could have been minimized or eliminated through early attention to child and family needs. Research shows that children who are not performing proficiently by the end of third grade are at very high risk of poor long-term outcomes, such as dropping out of school, teen pregnancy and juvenile crime. Beyond the Backpack is about the navigational tools—emotional, physical, experiential and actual that kids need to start school. Beyond the Backpack engages par-

discuss genocide against African People in America, we must also discuss the Maafa, because it was this Maafa that has historically created the on-going genocidal conditions inflicted against African People in America. When we use the term “Maafa” we are talking about an African term used to describe tremendous suffering, indescribable atrocities, disaster, calamity, catastrophe, or injustice. This term is used to refer to the protracted suffering of African people and culture as a consequence of the Transatlantic Slave Trade System. As the African Maafa researcher Michael Scott explains— “No African was waiting as a slave to be traded to the Europeans. In all regions of Africa, from which

Africans were transported, the African was involved in a brutal war declared by the European aggressor, interested in exploiting the human and natural resources of the richest continent on the earth.” Further, Brother Scott reveals, “These Africans who became prisoners of war were placed in detention camps and then transported to the Americas to be enslaved by the benefactors of their captors. No African began his or her ordeal as a slave. Africans were reduced to slavery by conquest.” It is important for African People to understand and internalize these brief historical facts. Just as the Jews, or any other group of people in the world, internalize their holocaust, and act on it, African People must come to the collective reality of our Maafa and act on it also. Finally, Brother Scott instructs us that, “Our foreparents were innocent victims of these heinous system of forced labor. They were never able to comprehend being seized in early morning attacks on their villages by vicious raiding parties. They were never able to understand why they were being sold by the avaricious middle men. They could never fathom why they were being marched in fetters and chains to the coast where they were bartered for European merchandise especially rum and guns. They could never appreciate 'why they were being warehoused in hell-like dungeons in Elmina or Goree.” So now that we have some insight into the idea and concept of the Maafa, it should make it easier to understand the idea and concept of genocide. In Olumenji’s book, White Genocide, Black Obsolescence, The Question of Black Survival In White America, he defines genocide very succinctly. He says genocide is the “deliberate and systematic destruction of Black people by white American socio-economic and cultural forces.” According to Brother Olumenji, America has created an ideology that justifies the annihilation of African people in this country. This is the function of genocide by those who inflict it on a mass of people. That is, they create a rationale for the annihilation and then try to explain that it does

not exist. This was the case in the CIA involvement in cocaine distribution in Los Angeles in which the profits were used to finance the CIA backed Contra army in Nicaragua. This involvement of the CIA caused a proliferation of the distribution and sale of crack cocaine across the African Communities of America, causing serious devastation to our communities. The United States Government tried to downplay the CIA's involvement in this incident by saying that this is an isolated situation and in fact this is not true. As a result of the Maafa and the genocide against African People in America, we must step up the demand for Reparations as the National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America, N'COBRA, is advocating as are many other African organizations throughout the world. Reparations simply means repair for injuries, harm and damages. As it has been pointed out, over and over again, we were made chattel and worked for more than three-hundred years without pay or other compensation for the value of our labor. The white man and white woman stole and criminally appropriated the services and the value of three-hundred years of labor and then passed it on through inheritance to their children. This process helped create the United States of America and this is fundamental to our demands for Reparations. We must continue to discuss these ideas in our efforts to dismantle our mental shackles. Every race and every ethnic group in the world protect their interests and African People should and must do no less.

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

At this current stage of history in the Black Liberation Movement, it is important that key concepts be revisited and re-discussed in our continued efforts to seek clarity on certain ideas that are fundamental to the white supremacy foundation of America. First, there is the idea and concept of the “Maafa.” When we

OPEN LETTER

Dear Editor: This is an open letter to all the people who are angry about parking meters in front of churches. Getting angry will not solve our problems. The Mayor and Aldermen have made their decision which is causing pastors to have to pay $10.00 per day for every day they are in their office all day. The church secretary is the same. If you park near the church for a funeral, prayer meeting or any other kind of meeting you will get a $50.00 ticket if

you don’t pay the meter in front of the church. Instead of just getting angry meet with the United American Progress Association and let us see what problem we can cause them. Then they may become interested in helping us to solve the problems they are causing us. The meeting will be held May 24, 2010 at 1716 West 79th Street at 7:00 p.m. Dr. Webb Evans, President United American Progress Association The Chicago Crusader

THE HEAT IS ON But apparently not in the monstrosity that houses the Voice of the Negro. Everybody in Chicago and the 50-person strong “Negro Voice Family” by now should have received a copy of a former staff member and whistle blower’s explosive certified 13-page letter detailing all sorts of shenanigans

tionist/building engineer/office manager (a/k/a Hebrew slave) phased her boss who supposedly called all of her freezing and sneezing staff in a extra chilled room in her warehouse/radio station and told them, “I don’t give a (rhymes with suck) about your families; don’t make your problems, my problems.” But the most startling revelations she makes in her dissertation is that the president routinely was unable to make payroll as early as 2008. “I knew the station was going through a financial situation, because starting in late 2008, the radio staff did not get paid on time. Payday is the 3rd and 18th of every month and the staff and I had gone (twice, some more than twice) for a month without a paycheck.” She said because the workers kept missing paychecks several of them were

times channels Queen Latifah inner man, screamed like a banshee about how she made a great business decision. The community wasn’t so convinced and for good reason—every LMA agreement Clear Channel has gone into with a small station has wound up owning that station, and now it looks like this radio station is next. Now it looks like the egg is on her face. We also hear there’s no way her girl, the Washington, D.C. area radio giant, is going to put another dime into that giant building and if she do, she is going to be the new owner of the Voice of the Negro. They say Clear Channel will have succeeded in putting what could have been a powerful tool for Negroes in the Midwest to be put out of business or co-opted and replaced with a bunch of ignorant disc jockeys who will tell us DUH Mayor is smart, The Bald Eagle (Pat Quinn) is good for Illinois and, Roland “Runnin’” Burris is 6 foot 3 inches tall. Wonder how long it is gonna take before the Department of Labor, Lisa Madigan, Harold Davis, who sued the station for allowing Monkey Butler to tell lies about him on the air, and all them people they owe is knocking down the station’s door with a search warrant? Will the head honcho, who likes to call people “boo” when she’s cussin’ them out have to sell her multi-million dollar mansion in Las Vegas? Will

going on at the city’s only Negro owned radio station, which sharecrops as part of the Clear Channel plantation. Chief among the woman’s complaint are wild and dangerous building code violations, so severe it sounds like the 10,000 square foot stateof-the-art facility ain’t nothing more than an overpriced shotgun house. The recptionist, who got kicked to the curb in October 2009 for refusing to remove her skullcap, not only says the radio headquarters lacks heat in the winter and air in the summer, but has an assortment of plumbing and sewage problems—none of which come from Charles “Black People Look Like Monkeys” Butler’s flat behind. She say if the place caught on fire everybody would burn up like the food at our favorite restaurant on 79th Street, because there ain’t no sprinkler system and nothing works right. Even building inspectors and city snoops done told the radio station’s sharecropper president that she better clean up her act or else; and on top of that somebody put a bunch of propane tanks throughout the building like they was setting dynamite. Yet, none of this, according to the woman who worked as a recep-

either evicted or had been threatened with being set on the curb. The lady whistleblower also charges “money was taken out of our checks (every two weeks) but was not being sent on our behalf to Aflac, health insurance with Allstate and our 401k with Oppenheimer funds. We all received letters from these companies stating, since your company (radio station) is no longer paying the premium, you can continue at this rate. I have all of the paperwork and pay stubs to verify this information.” Ain’t that illegal? Now this letter (which names the names and includes the telephone numbers of a whole bunch of folk) goes on and on and The Chatterbox will share some more of its explosive contents when we gets more time, but in the meantime, how come Clear Channel ain’t bailing out the radio station, which is unable to pay back the $5 million it costs to lease the 1690 signal it is currently on? Wasn’t too long ago that the radio president went loco at a FCC hearing when it was noted she had signed her LMA (losing my ass) agreement that would cause her to lose the historic station in less than a decade’s time. Back then ole prexy, who some-

BUSINESS Tell Congress to ‘Do the Right Thing’ By Charlene Crowell NNPA Financial Writer As the U.S. Senate continues sorting through amendments to the federal financial reform bill, one that has garnered some major media attention would impose severe setbacks for real reform. It would also affect an area of lending that most consumers will financially feel: auto loans. Sponsored by Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS), the amendment would carve out an exemption for auto dealers, allowing them to bypass rules made by the proposed Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). This amendment is opposed by a number of organizations including the Independent Community Bankers Association, Credit Union National Association, and advocates for civil rights, the military and consumers. What makes this amendment particularly significant for African-Americans is that it comes on the heels of a large but limited class action settlement won by the National Consumer Law Center (NCLC) against all of the major auto lenders. After analyzing millions of car loans made by dealers of major manufacturers – Toyota, Honda, Ford, General Motors, Chrysler and Mazda -NCLC determined that AfricanAmericans across the country were subject to unexplained auto loan markups, and similar to the Center for Responsible Lending’s

Charlene Crowell earlier research that showed that more than 54 percent of AfricanAmericans are charged dealer kickbacks, compared to only 31 percent for White customers resulting in $20 billion in overcharges each year. While White consumers were charged an average of $245 on auto dealer markups, according to NCLC, African-American consumers paid more than double their White counterparts, paying an average of $656 more. These markups were added on top of the rate offered by finance companies that already factors credit risk. Even worse, some states with substantial AfricanAmerican populations had even greater auto loan markups than the national average.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, both Maryland and Alabama have more than one million African-American residents. Their respective auto dealer loan rate markups were the highest found by NCLC. In Alabama, the average markup was $836 per loan and in Maryland, a slightly higher average of $838. When NCLC compared the percentage of higher costs by state between Black and white consumers, the states with the highest percentages of markup were: Alabama (303 percent), Delaware (365 percent), Nebraska (434 percent) and Virginia (306 percent). Although the settlement restricts auto dealers’ discretion in loan rate markups, it will expire by 2012. With an approaching expiration date and a pending amendment that would provide favored-status to an industry reported by the Better Business Bureau to be the number one source of complaints received from state and local agencies, this amendment’s passage would be no reform at all. Moreover, car dealers broker about 80 percent of all car loans. It would be unfair if small banks and credit unions were required to abide by sensible lending rules on their car loans, while the biggest provider of car loans could ignore the rules. Should the auto dealers succeed with their carve-out amendment, expect other similar carve-out amendments from other sectors

of the financial services industry to succeed as well. If auto lending or other carve-outs are allowed, an uneven playing field would emerge and dilute the legislation’s original intent: comprehensive reforms that protect all consumers. From the Center for Responsible Lending’s perspective, the ongoing abuse in auto lending is one more illustration of how existing fair lending laws have yet to fully or consistently benefit people of color. Regardless of whether a financial product is a payday loan, mortgage, or auto loan, every American has a right to be treated fairly. Our financial transactions should be transparent with full disclosure of all terms and responsibilities. In a May 11 letter to Senators, Lauren Saunders, NCLC managing attorney wrote, “Auto dealers are loan brokers, originators and lenders. They can and do affect the terms of an auto loan every bit as much as a mortgage broker

or originator.” “The very same practices that have plagued the mortgage industry,” Saunders concluded, “have plagued auto loans.” Right now, the huge profits already earned by the finance industry enable them to spend $1.4 million a day to influence Congress. Every consumer and voter should encourage their own federal elected officials in the House and in the Senate to be watchful in these critical times. According to informed sources, the Brownback amendment vote could come as soon as May 17. Just as the late Ossie Davis said on screen to a young Spike Lee, tell your federal representatives to “Do the right thing.” Charlene Crowell is the Center for Responsible Lending’s Communications Manager for State Policy and Outreach. She can be reached at Charlene.crowell@responsiblelending.org.

The Transformative Potential of Broadband for African Americans The promises of broadband for minority groups – and African Americans in particular – are significant. For the 59 percent of African Americans who have adopted home broadband and the 32 percent who turn to mo-

bile devices for daily Internet use, broadband delivers significant social, economic, and health-related benefits. African Americans are successfully learning how to use their Internet connections to visit local,

state, and federal government websites, and to get information about or apply for government benefits. According to one recent poll, over half of African Americans and Hispanics strongly believe that Internet access im-

proves awareness of and access to government services. Surveys show that use of the Internet improves access to health and medical resources for African Americans, leading to significant cost-savings and improvements in the quality of care. A large majority of African Americans use their Internet connections to search for health or medical information online. Such tools may have a considerable impact on the health care of African Americans, as they are twice as likely as White Americans to have diabetes, African American men are 30 percent more likely to die from heart disease, and the average use of emergency room visits is more than double for minorities due largely to a lack of regular physician access. In addition to the health-related impacts of broadband, African Americans stand to benefit greatly from the educational and economic opportunities broadband enables by removing access barriers to high quality education, engaging at-risk students, and providing improved flexibility for non-traditional students. A numSaturday, May 22, 2010

ber of studies have shown that the use of broadband as a teaching enhancement can decrease school dropout rates and improve student performance. Greater educational success for African Americans also leads to improved employment opportunities. Online access to job postings, resources for small business creation, and telecommuting options improve the economic opportunities available to African Americans. One recent survey found that African Americans use their Internet connections more frequently than Whites to look online for job information and search for ideas about starting an online business. The many benefits of broadband will continue to be realized by African Americans as public and private efforts to educate consumers on the benefits of broadband and promote adoption by underserved groups. A national campaign for universal adoption can do much to enable African Americans to enjoy the many benefits of broadband technology. 9

EDUCATION Lunch with a Leader Program, leaves CPS students with guidance for success Keynote Speaker, Chicago native, Dorian Boyland, promises cars, college application assistance for students Chicago Public School students received more than words of encouragement and inspiration during The Support Group’s Lunch with a Leader event. A generous commitment by a Chicago native, now a multi-millionaire CEO, left a group of freshmen from Robeson High School with the promise of a car after college graduation and all of the nearly 250 students in the room with a guarantee of help with college application fees if they need it. Boyland was the keynote speaker for Lunch with a Leader, The Support Group’s program that brings together corporate leaders and high school students for a day focused on leadership. Held at Apostolic Church of God, corporate leaders hosted CPS students at a lunch table and offered words of encouragement and inspiration while talking to them about what it takes to be a leader. They also shared important information, based on their own experiences that will help students reach their full potential while arming them with the tools needed for life after high school. “With youth violence ravaging our communities, it’s important

for young people to engage with positive role models and learn about the important qualities needed to be a leader,” said Bennie Henry, executive director and founder of The Support Group. “These young people want to go to college. They want to be successful. Our Lunch with Leader program helps to show them how and puts them in the company of the kind of leaders that many of them don’t see or touch in the communities where they live.” More than 40 leaders participated in the annual luncheon representing companies and organizations like FedEx, ComEd, Dominick’s, Ariel Investment, Northern Trust, AON, Hewitt, Leak and Sons Funeral Home, Cook County Sheriff ’s Office and NBC5. Also addressing students were Robert Runcie, chief administrative officer, Chicago Public Schools; Margaret Garner, CEO, Broadway Consolidated Companies; New Jersey Nets guard and Chicago native Bobby Simmons and 20th Ward Alderman Willie Cochran. Participating high schools were: BEST @ Bowen, Carver Military Academy, CVCA, Douglas, Fenger, Harper, Hyde Park, Julian, Morgan Park, Robeson, South Shore School of Technology, University of Chicago Charter and Young Magnet. cars after college graduation, he invited the seven young women to his home in Orlando, FL, so they can learn more about his business. Boyland, a graduate of South Shore High School who played first base for the Pittsburgh Pirates, owns 12 car dealerships across the country including Mercedes-Benz of Orlando. “These students now belong to me,” he said. He also told all the students at the Lunch with a Leader event that he would financially assist them with their first college appli-

cation if their family could not afford it. After apologizing for not being involved and giving back to his hometown, which he loved, Boyland said he would be working with The Support Group on other initiatives to help students. Boyland told students at the luncheon that they must have education goals and strive to be “good” kids by making good grades and staying out of trouble just as he did with guidance from his mother.

Students become local historians to compete with their peers Four Morgan Park Academy students achieved top marks in the Chicago Metro History Fair and will be advancing to the state

finals. Sixth grade historians Sarah Greene, Arthur Ortiz, Ian Gagnon, and Tahj Alli-Ballogun competed at the junior level

(Grades 6 to 8) on April 17 at the Illinois Institute of Technology. The event is hosted by the Chicago Metro History Education

Center, which holds the annual fair to give Chicago students a forum for developing and presenting historical findings on a local or wider-reaching historical topic. The students advanced to the State Expo, held in Springfield on May 6, which gives competitors an opportunity to share their efforts with students from every corner of Illinois.

The students presented their research findings through individual exhibits, so that the budding historians could focus on project organization and research techniques, requiring an interpretation of historical facts. Ian Gagnon’s project explores the history of Chicago’s sewers, including how they worked then and now to assure good sanitation, and the concept of literally raising a city’s elevation to ensure sewer efficiency. Arthur Ortiz’ project explores the Chicago Metropolitan Water District and how water was and is now filtered of waste and made safe for consumption. Sarah’s aunt, Hazel Johnson, was the first to notice the inordinate number of people being diagnoed with cancer and other illnesses; through her aunt’s efforts, an organization grew to advocate for safe housing. Tahj Alli-Ballogun’s project explores how Chicago’s public housing was created for a specific purpose, which ultimately failed. His project examines life in the projects and how their original intent remains unfulfilled. In order to go to the state level, Morgan Park Academy students had to first be selected among all of the submitted sixth grade projects. Out of the original 27 projects, seven school semifinalists were selected and judged by the school’s history department, and the four finalists were then sent to the regional competition in Chicago. There, all four projects were awarded blue ribbons and regional finalists. These finalists will compete at the state level, though the competition is not against other students; rather, the aim is to produce a research project that meets stringent historical expectations and standards. Bookworm Sez “Sunday is for God” By Michael McGowan, pictures by Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher c.2010, Schwartz & Wade Books $17.99 / $22.99 Canada 40 pages Every Monday, your mother wakes you up early for breakfast, tells you to hurry up and get dressed, and takes you to school when she goes to work. That happens on Tuesday and Wednesday, too, as well as on Thursday and Friday. You might know what day Mom goes to the grocery store. You undoubtedly know what day your favorite TV show is on. And you always know what day it is when you have lessons or practice. Saturday is a day to play outside, but if your house is like a lot of others, “Sunday is for God”, as you’ll see in the new book by Michael McGowan, pictures by Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher. Early on Sunday morning, Momma calls upstairs and says it’s

time for breakfast. Everything smells so good, and as a young boy cleans his plate, his Daddy says to hurry up and get ready. Momma says Sunday is the Lord’s day, and the whole family is going to church. Everybody gets dressed up on Sunday, including a tie and a shirt with an itchy, starchy collar. Momma says they need to look nice because that’s what the Lord wants. Papaw is wearing his flashy tie and Sister can’t find her glove, but everybody finally gets out of the house and the walk to church is short. Inside, the pews quickly fill up. People start to sing about gathering at the river, and the boy wishes he was sitting by a real river. His friend, Joey, is trying to see who will laugh first, and when Brother fusses with his hair, Daddy tells him that the Lord doesn’t care what somebody’s hair looks like. Brother Cartwright looks like he’s starring in a show. Some-

times, it’s hard to understand the things he preaches, but there are also times when “Amen” is the only right thing to say. Then, church is over and it’s time to head home where Momma puts

dinner on the table and the scratchy-collared shirt makes way for playing clothes. Tomorrow is a regular day. Back to the schedule. But Sunday is for God.

Remember getting frowned-at as you were squirming in your Sunday clothes, wondering how much longer til you could go home? “Sunday is for God” puts voice to that for your child, but at the same time, author Michael McGowan shows kids that there is a lot to behold in a Sunday church service. While McGowan’s story will definitely appeal to kids, there’s a hidden surprise in this book that took me four read-throughs before I caught on to it. Look closely at the illustrations by Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher and you’ll see that the pictures subtly consist of snippets of hymns and Bible verses. Small children – the audience for this book – probably won’t notice or care, but it’s a nice delight for grown-ups. If your child is a wiggle-worm on Sunday morning, you’re going to want this book around. For 4-to-8-year-olds, “Sunday is for God” is something to enjoy any day of the week.

WORLD OF MUSIC

‘Harlem Renaissance’ resounds with John Williams and the Harlem Quartet As the Chicago Sinfonietta’s search for a new maestro draws to an end, the nation’s most diverse symphony orchestra conducted by John McLaughlin Williams joined forces with the Harlem Quartet to present a most memorable pair of concerts Sunday, May 16 at Rosary College (River Forest) and Symphony Center (Chicago), the final ones of the 2009-2010 season Guest conductor and Grammy® Award-winner John McLaughlin Williams and Maestro Paul Freeman shared the conducting duties on the concert whose musical fare ranged from 18th century Mozartian classicism to the 20th century wellcrafted and energetic Michael Abels composition, “Dances and Delights,” a fusion of sounds of jazz, blues and Latin dance. Maestro Freeman led the Sinfonietta through the first half of “Harlem Renaissance” that opened with Mozart’s lively overture to “Der Schauspieldirektor” (The Impresario) followed by the first movement of Mozart’s “Sinfonia Concertante” with The Harlem Quartet’s Ilmar Gavilan (violin)

Harlem Quartet and Juan-Miguel Hernandez “viola” engaging in a pseudo-duel, tossing off and answering phrases like that more-often heard at Jazz concerts. Both artists had fun, fun, fun with

this genre-crossing work fusing Symphony and Concerto. The absence of regular Harlem Quartet cellist Desmond Neysmith (due to a fractured thumb) necessitated a program change

which substituted the previously announced Allegro movement from Brahms’ Concerto for Violin and Cello in A minor, op. 102 with George Frederick McKay’s “Variant on a Texas Tune” written during the first half of the 20th century. Conductor Williams valiantly sang the theme for the audience during his verbal program notes although he readily admitted that his singing voice was neither on par with his conducting skills nor his performance level on both the violin and piano. Northwestern University Bienen School of Music student Robert Rolen was a most capable substitute for the ailing Neysmith on the McKay piece. The complete Harlem Quartet performed along with the Sinfonietta for Michael Abels’ energetic and contemporary “Delights and Dances” which was commissioned by the Sphinx Organization to celebrate AfricanAmerican and Latino communities by embracing the sounds of jazz, blues and Latin dance. Receiving a rousing ovation, the Quartet returned to the stage with an encore, Billy Strayhorn’s

“Take the A Train,” much to the delight of the audience. The concert ended with Conductor Williams leading the Orchestra in Zoltán Kodály’s “Dances of Galánta” (“Galántai táncok”), keeping with the dance-inspired theme of the final concert. The Chicago Sinfonietta, now in its 23rd season, has been auditioning conductors all season in its search for a new music director to take over the helm when Founding Music Director Freeman retires at the close of the 2010-2011 season. After Monday night’s performance, John McLaughlin Williams is definitely “in the mix” for the post. Maestro Freeman’s successor is expected to be announced in late summer.

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING Historic church on list of America’s most endangered places WASHINGTON, D.C.—The National Trust for Historic Preservation named Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C. to its 2010 list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. This annual list highlights important examples of the nation’s architectural, cultural and natural heritage that are at risk for destruction or irreparable damage. Since 1821, when a group of free and enslaved African Americans formed its congregation, Metropolitan A.M.E. Church, the national cathedral of African Methodism, has been much more than a spiritual sanctuary. A major landmark of African American heritage and one of the most important religious institutions in the United States, Metropolitan A.M.E.’s red brick Victorian Gothic-style church, completed in 1886, was constructed by donations – large and small – from A.M.E. congregations across the country. Their goal was to establish a permanent presence for the A.M.E. denomination just a short distance from the White House and the U.S. Capitol in order to pressure the federal government for equal treatment of African American people. Since its inception, Metropolitan A.M.E. Church has been a bastion of advocacy for human rights, and its congregation has been involved in this country’s seminal struggles, including the fight for abolition of slavery and the civil rights movement. In segregated Washington, Metropolitan A.M.E.’s stained-glass sanctuary was one of the largest meeting places available to an integrated audience and, therefore, attracted prominent speakers, including President Taft and First Lady Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt and, later, Dr. Dorothy Height, Reverend Gardner Taylor, and Bishop Desmond Tutu. It was here that the funeral of congregant Frederick Douglass was held in 1895 and where mourners said goodbye to Rosa Parks a century later. This African American institution was the first to be included as an official host of a Presidential inauguration event during the two terms of President William Jefferson Clinton.

and funded major repairs over the years to maintain the building and begun a restoration drive, previously unknown, ongoing water infiltration has caused extensive damage. Now structurally compromised, the building urgently requires a multi-million-dollar rescue effort, a capital investment that Metropolitan A.M.E. Church’s community of dedicated supporters cannot afford. “From anti-slavery leadership in the mid-19th century to AIDS education and voter registration projects today, Metropolitan A.M.E. Church has been not just a major center of worship but an institution at the forefront of the civic, cultural and intellectual life of African Americans,” said Richard Moe, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. “The church is sadly illustrative of many historic urban houses of worship that are in danger of being lost forever.” Moe announced the 2010 list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places while standing in the sanctuary of the Metropolitan A.M.E. Church. He was joined by church leaders and other prominent supporters including Ernest Green - a member of the Steward Board of Metropolitan AME Church and one of the members of the famed “Little Rock Nine,” the students who integrated Little Rock’s Central High School in l957. Metropolitan A.M.E. Church also is nationally significant as the founding sponsor and home of the Bethel Literary and Historical Association, a highly influential educational institution that sponsored programs with nationally-known speakers, including Carter G. Woodson, Mary Church Terrell, Ida B. Wells, Archibald H. Grimke, and Booker T. Washington. A leading cultural institution in the nation’s capital, the association became the model for other literary societies that sought to preserve the legacy of African Americans. Metropolitan is the oldest

A.M.E. church in the District of Columbia and, along with Philadelphia’s famed Mother Bethel, remains one of the most prominent A.M.E. churches in the country. The church is known for its 29 stained glass windows, which chronicle the A.M.E. church’s phenomenal growth during a period of racial oppression. Despite their significance, the windows are compromised due to deteriorated lead jointing. In addition, the building’s original exterior metalwork has rusted, and there is evidence of settlement of the church’s grand staircase and sanctuary floors. A poorly designed internal gutter system also has caused water damage to the church’s walls and ceiling. The current physical condition of the church threatens its continued use as a place of worship, as well as its role in local and national humanitarian ministries. Recently, when portions of the sanctuary’s tin ceiling fell to the floor, the church was forced to halt services in the sanctuary for safety reasons. While preliminary emergency repairs have been made and Metropolitan’s congregation is committed to saving and restoring its church, approximately $11 million is needed to stabilize the structure and restore the building. The public is invited to learn more about what they can do to support these and hundreds of other endangered sites, experience first-hand accounts of these places, and share stories and photos of their own at www.PreservationNation.org/11 Most.

Fighting diabetes block-by-block in North Lawndale By La Risa Lynch Shirley Camp was in denial when she was diagnosed with diabetes seven years ago. And although her husband of 26 years suffers from the disease, Camp, a North Lawndale resident, wanted no part of the finger pricking or the daily insulin injections often associated with the disease. “By me watching him shoot himself up two or three times a day, I didn’t want to do that. That’s why I was in denial,” she said. Education about the disease changed Camp’s outlook. She said managing the disease is still a struggle because of her weight, but she tries to eat more healthy. Now she is on a mission to help others. Camp is hitting the streets with

Camp understands why North Lawndale is hard hit by diabetes. She said it’s a community without a grocery store and is peppered with fast food restaurants and corner stores that sell “chips, pop and alcohol.” Camp met her husband at the McDonalds where he worked and she joked that they have been eating “grease” every since. “Since I know about diabetes, I’m telling everybody, because it is running rampant in the community,” she said. The confidential survey is targeting homeowners between Roosevelt and Odgen and Homan and Tripp. It will collect information on race, age and number of individuals in the households and risk factors such as weight, family history, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. coordinator. “It’s really about trying to impact the lives of people one at a time,” Werner said. Margaret Shepard, also a CHE, knows the consequences of not taking diabetes seriously. Shepard had gestational diabetes, which occurs during pregnancy, and has been a diabetic for 26 years. Shepard thought the pills prescribed to her was a magic panacea for the disease. So she didn‘t change her diet or exercise which elevated her sugar levels. She was placed on both insulin and pills. “Now I’m feeling the affects in my body,” Shepard said. “I can no longer see like I used to. I’m feeling tired and sluggish. You don’t have Camp and Margaret Shepard talk with a North Lawndale resident about diabetes. her story as a community health educator (CHE) for a new initiative to increase diabetes awareness and prevention in her west side community. North Lawndale has one of the highest rates of diabetes in the city, according to Sinai Urban Health Institute (SUHI), an umbrella unit of Sinai Health Systems. SUHI created the Block by Block North Lawndale Diabetes Community Action initiative that will survey North Lawndale residents about their diabetes risk. The goal is to reduce risk and promote a healthier lifestyle. North Lawndale, according to a 2003 SUHI study, has a diabetes rate 40 percent higher than the city. About 1.5 out of 10 people over the age of 18 in North Lawndale have diabetes. Nearly 95 percent of those are diagnosed with Type II diabetes, the most preventable form of the disease.

a $15 gift card for completing the survey. To participate, call the survey telephone hotline at (773) 257-6024. The survey hopes to identify 287 people at risk for the disease or who have the disease. Those individuals will receive home visits a couple of times a year by community health educators or “block captains.” Block captains will provide diabetes education and create action plans to help residents eat healthier, exercise more and stick to their drug regiment. They will also be referred to clinics, resources and programs to address their needs. Using block captains will determine, if community engagement is a better way to address individuals’ medical needs, but the goal is to get people to change their behavior that contribute to diabetes, explained Donna V. to go through that if you just do the right thing; if you exercise; and watch your food intake. It better to do it before you have to.” Diabetes, she added, is not curable, but manageable. “It has been a life changing experience for me.” Knowing risk factors such as obesity, high blood pressure and cholesterol are key in diabetes prevention, said Kimberly Felker, another CHE, whose father has the disease. Even a waist circumference over 35 inches can lead to diabetes, “because it squeezes in your pancreas and other organs making them work harder,” Felker said. More education must be directed at older Blacks who may dismiss diabetes symptoms, like blurred vision or frequent urina-

tion, as part of getting older, she added. “Some people could have diabetes for five or ten years and never know it … because of lack of knowledge [or] they don’t know what to look for,” Felker said. A possible tell-tell sign, Felker explained, is what is called “dirty necks,” or acanthosis migricans. It is a thick discoloration of skin around the neck that looks similar to elephant skin. She said some people dismiss it as someone’s neck not being clean, but is a indication of diabetes. The condition, Werner added, is often seen in overweight children. “That is definitely a red flag that they should get checked out.
