Intruder shot dead by senior citizen By J. Coyden Palmer As the dead body of an alleged burglar was rolled out of a West Side home Wednesday (May 26) afternoon after being shot by the person who lives there, residents clapped and some cheered. It is an example of how fed up Chicagoans have become with crime and the city’s “ridiculous” ban on handguns, according to gun rights activists. Killed was Anthony Nelson, 29, who has a lengthy criminal record for drugs and weapons charges. The man who defended his home is an 80-year-old army veteran who lived in the two-flat building with his 83-year-old wife and 12year-old great-grandson, both of whom were at home at the time. Neighbors said it’s been long known that the man had a gun for protection and they are happy the elderly couple and child are safe. Chicago police took the homeowner to the police station where he was questioned for several hours and released. He was later brought back to his home, but declined to comment to reporters. Police have not said if they will be filing charges against him since it is illegal to own a handgun in Chicago. Police also would not say if the intruder was shot with a handgun or a long gun.

Growing up in Chicago during the late ’30s and throughout the ’40s Anne experienced poverty and racism according to son Tony Thomas. “She strived to be better and she always made sacrifices for her children as well as other children. Her energy was endless.” Anne’s interest in theater and journalism lead her to several career opportunities. She served as a lecturer to organizations such as the Fine Arts Council, the Minorities in Film—Art Institute Film Series as well as to some colleges and universities one being Governor State University in their Images of Minorities in Motion Pictures and TV series. Anne and her husband Earle Chisolm,

According to a statement written by Anne “films known as ‘Blaxploitation’ would encourage Black children to adopt negative images as part of their lifestyle, thereby limiting their future and impeding their progress into the mainstream of American society. Anne served on the board as Project Director for public programs, which was sponsored by the Illinois Humanities Council, for three years. During this time she researched and documented “The Effect of Visual Images of Minorities on American Society.” In her research she determined that “Stereotypes in film and (Continued on page 13)
NEWS Community grieves officer’s death
Thomas Wortham IV called a pillar in the community By La Risa Lynch It was nearly two weeks ago when Keith Tate and Thomas Wortham IV stood in front of Nat King Cole Park on the corner of 85th and King Drive. The two discussed how to keep the park safe after a rash of shootings that wounded three teens within a two-month span. Now Tate stood in the same park mourning the loss of a man killed by the same violence he vowed to fight, not just as a Chatham resident, but also as a Chicago Police officer. Nearly 100 residents gathered in Cole Park last week under a light rain for a prayer vigil for Wortham. The three-year police veteran was killed May 20th outside his parent’s home across from the park in an apparent robbery attempt of for his new motorcycle. Police have two suspects in custody in connection with his death. A third is hospitalized with gun shots wounds received when Wortham’s father, Thomas Wortham III, a retired police sergeant, came to his son’s aid and opened fire on the suspects killing a fourth man. “It was a form of insanity that something of this magnitude would occur (to) an individual that worked so hard to make things better in the community,” said Tate, president of the Chatham Avalon Park Advisory Council. Alderman Freddrenna Lyle (6) was stunned by the killing. She worked with Wortham who served as the park’s advisory council president and knew the elder Wortham. “The young man was showing his father his motorcycle,” Lyle recalled of the shooting. “He pulled up in front of the house. His father watched him go to the [bike], and some person walked up to him, and put a gun to his head. What horrible thing can a father see?” Wortham who served in the 7th Police District in Englewood, returned from his second tour of duty in Iraq in March. His death has sent an unnerving ripple in this section of Chatham with its well manicured lawns. The safety that made Chatham a haven for middle class Blacks seemingly has been shattered. “Change is enivitable,” Tate said. The change was foreshadowed in 2007. A daring morning armed robbery at Illinois Service Federal Bank, located on 87th and King Drive, left bank teller Tramaine Gibson dead. 2
For years, Tate said, Chatham had the reputation of being a tranquil suburban enclave located in the city. But even some well-to-do suburbs have seen their share of violence. “So there is no naïveté on our part to think that some of those things would not occur in our community, but our job is to make sure it doesn’t happen on a continued basis,” he said. The prayer vigil doubled as a call for residents to reclaim their community. Reverend Dr. Marc Robertson called Wortham’s death a wake up call for residents to get reacquainted with their neighbors and engage in their community. He urged residents not to turn a blind eye to crime, but call police when it occurs. “This is our neighborhood,” Reverend Dr. Robertson said. “This is Chatham. This is our home. We will protect it by any means necessary.” He applauded residents for coming out to support the Wortham family. But Reverend Dr. Robertson said Wortham’s legacy for improving the park is now in their hands. “We are not going to forget about Tom,” he said. “Tom had a purpose that was to help preserve this park that we are standing in. We are going to make sure his work was not in vain. We are going to make sure that we have protection in this park so that children can play in this park … without fear of getting shot and gunned downed.” The vigil was tempered with frustration. Chatham resident Morgan Stewart, 25, was critical of Police Superintendent Jody Weis. She said it should not take a police officer’s death for the superintendent to do something about gun violence. “If it takes that much for Jody Weis to realize that then, that is sad. He should have done something when the two year-old got shot, when kids starting getting killed,” said Stewart, a mother of a three-year-old. Fourth District Police Sgt. Ed Adams worked with the elder Wortham on Mayor Harold Washington’s security detail. Adams said he still feels the loss for his friend’s son. He called the death a tragic. But when asked what can be done to curb violence, Adams said police must get back to old style police work, like walking the beat. “We got to get back to proactive police work [by doing] aggressive patrols, getting the guns off the streets, put the bad guys in jail,” he said. REVEREND DR. MARC ROBERTSON addresses a crowd in Cole Park, which is near the location of where off-duty Chicago Police officer Thomas Wortham IV was killed in an apparent robbery attempt of his brand-new motorcycle. Robertson told the nearly 100 residents gathered to carry on Wortham’s work to keep the park safe. (Photo by La Risa Lynch - Freelance writer) Lyle hoped there is a teachable moment in Wortham’s death. She wanted young people to realize there is a better way if they do not fall for the hype the music indus-
try is peddling. “The music they hear, and the videos they watch is all a fantasy,” she said. “Tom Wortham was real. He worked every day.
He contributed to the community. He was trying to give back. He believed in service. That’s real. This thug life is not real.”
Funeral for officer killed in robbery set for Friday By J. Coyden Palmer Chatham residents will say good-bye to a community hero who was murdered during an attempted robbery last week outside of his parents’ home. Officer Thomas Wortham IV was killed by assailants who were trying to rob him of a new motorcycle on May 19th in the 8400 block of South King Drive. Wortham had just left his parents home when two men with guns approached him and demanded his bike. His father, Thomas Wortham III, is a retired police officer and yelled at the men to leave his son alone. They instead fired at the elder Wortham who retreated to a bedroom and returned with a gun. During that time the younger Wortham pulled his service gun and exchanged shots with the suspects. The older Wortham also fired killing one suspect and seriously injuring the second. Two other suspects, identified as Paris McGee, 20 and Toyious Taylor, 29, were sitting in a car and drove off during the exchange. According to prosecutors, they drove over the officer’s injured body, dragging him nearly two blocks. They drove around the block to try to retrieve the other suspects, but kept going when they saw the older Wortham at his son’s side.
Thomas Wortham IV McGee and Taylor have been charged with two counts of firstdegree murder in the killing of Wortham and the fatal wounding of suspect Brian Floyd, 20. They were ordered held without bond as another unidentified suspect fights for his life at a local hospital. Both McGee and Taylor were identified as drivers of the getaway vehicle by the elder Wortham. McGee had turned himself into police the day after the shooting, while Taylor was apprehended the following day during a traffic stop. Officer Wortham was a member

of the Illinois National Guard and served two tours in Iraq. He was 30 years old, single with no children. Wortham had recently become the president of the Cole Park Advisory Committee. He was working in conjunction with other residents to stem the criminal activity that was coming into the park that is directly across the street from the house where he spent his childhood. Last month there was a shooting at Cole Park following some sort of dispute on the basketball court. Neighbors say people from outside the community were coming into the park causing trouble. Wortham had vowed to fix the problem. Keith Tate is the leader of the Chatham/Avalon Park Community Council and has known the Wortham family for years. He was shocked and saddened to hear of Wortham’s death and said his death has galvanized the community to fight crime like never before. “Here was a young man who gave his life for this community because he was concerned about some of the recent things that were taking place,” Tate said. “He wanted Cole Park to be like it was when he was growing up; a safe place for everyone. He will be missed but we will continue his mission.” The Chicago Crusader

Budget woes may close state’s only sickle cell treatment center By La Risa Lynch When Gloria Johnson is having a sickle cell crisis the last place she wants to be is in an emergency room. “These doctors don’t know what they are doing,” Johnson, 55, said. “They come into the room and ask crazy questions (like) how long have you had it? How did you get it? Then they proceed to try to treat you for conditions and illnesses that you don’t have. They don’t treat you for sickle cell.” Ending up in an emergency room is a possibility for Johnson if state legislators do not restore funding to her near West Loop medical center where seeks treatment for this chronic blood disorder. The state legislators axed $1.9 million from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Sickle Cell Treatment Center to try to plug a $13 billion deficit. The loss of funding guarantees the clinic will close come July 1. Johnson, who travels 31 miles from her Matteson home to the clinic for treatment, hopes it does not come to that. “The sickle cell center has literally been a life line (for) me,” Johnson said, “…and I plead to the Governor, do not close the sickle cell center ever.” Johnson, fellow sickle cell patients and center officials attended a press conference last week urging state legislators not to balance the budget on the backs of
the poor and medically indigent. “We understand that there are budget cuts that need to be made, but make them … on waste, don’t make them on vital programs,” said Bonnye Johnson, UIC’s sickle cell center’s community health education and outreach coordinator. She said funding for the sickle cell center is not included in this year’s proposed budget. The center receives funding from the state’s tobacco settlement fund, which subsidizes health and smoking cessation programs. Last year, the state cut $600,000 from the center’s budget. “So it is not like we are asking them to take something out of the operations budget,” Johnson said. “We are asking them to use those funds for what they were meant to be used for.” The center is the only acute adult care sickle cell treatment center in Illinois and serves more than 800 patients, some travelling from downstate for treatment. Keeping the center open is critical, explained Joseph DeSimone, UIC Sickle Cell Center’s director. DeSimone said there are few treatment centers for the disease, because it mostly affects poor minorities. Insurance companies, he contends, do not see treating this disease or its patients as profitable. “For that reason, adult care is not something that people think about,” DeSimone said, adding
LaShawn K. Ford
that the UIC center provides specialized care for the disease that is rarely understood. Sickle cell is an inherited blood disease that effects red blood cells and causes chronic depilating pain, which is often described as worst than childbirth. In sickle cell, usually round-shaped red blood cells become deformed and crescent-shaped. The shape makes the cells hard to pass through blood vessels, often depriving organs of oxygen. As a result, people with sickle cell
also suffer strokes, as well as kidney and liver damage. “The greatest number of deaths from a genetic disease comes from sickle cell,” DeSimone said. Logan Square resident Joan Green also laments going to the emergency room for treatment. Hospital staff, Green said, just assume sickle cell patients are “drug addicts” using the disease as an excuse to get powerful pain-killers. She called a recent trip to the emergency room as “horrible.”
Green recalled that after a doctor informed a nurse of her medication dosage, the nurse diluted it. She said her pain worsen, requiring her to be admitted. “With the acute care center, you bypass the emergency room,” the 54-year-old said. “We need this clinic.” Losing the funds also affects the center’s community outreach and screening programs, UIC nurse Diana J. Wilkie said. Community outreach, she added is important to educate people how the disease is transmitted to children. Wilkie noted that 1 in 10 Blacks carry the sickle cell trait and “if two of them get together, then a baby with sickle cell can be born.” “Without that kind of education happening, we are going to have more babies with the disease,” she said. The center has the backing of state Representative LaShawn Ford, who met with the center’s patients and officials when they recently lobbied legislators in Springfield. Ford is championing the center’s cause after discovering some of his former students suffered from the disease. “I think it is important (that) the governor looks at this program closely and makes sure that he does what he can to save it,” he said, noting that preliminary budget talks emphasize no new spending.
Pullman residents hear another side of Wal-Mart story By J. Coyden Palmer More than 50 residents filled the steamy meeting room of Greenstone Church, located in the historic Pullman neighborhood, on Monday (May 24) night to hear more information about a proposed Wal-Mart coming to their community. The meeting was conducted to hear mostly about why Wal-Mart would not be good for the community and featured research speakers and current Wal-Mart employees. The issue has divided the community as those for WalMart say it will bring much needed jobs and a grocery store, while those against it decry the company’s labor practices and low wages. “That’s why we had to do this,” explained Jim Caffrey, one of the Pullman residents who convened the meeting. “We’re not getting the whole story, since Wal-Mart was added to the development plan. Most media are not telling it. Our alderman (Anthony Beale 9th) is more interested in selling Wal-Mart than listening to our
concerns.” One of the most eye-opening speeches of the night came from a 12-year Wal-Mart employee. Rosetta Brown works as a greeter at Sam’s Club in suburban Cicero. Sam’s Club is a subsidiary of Wal-Mart where Brown previously worked. She said most workers are underemployed and many still must get some form of government financial assistance to make ends meet. She said WalMart’s anti-union stance also makes it difficult for workers to speak out against some of the unfair practices the company uses. “Wal-Mart tried to portray that we’re all family but we’re no king to the Waltons and the big shots in Arkansas,” Brown said. “The workers stick together because we have to. We help each other; we feed each other and we take up collections for each other’s funerals because when you work at Wal-Mart, you can’t make it on your own.” Brown said her perception about the company changed one night when she was injured at work. While working on the

He wants development and jobs in the community, but he does not believe that Wal-Mart will bring jobs that can sustain a quality of life for anyone in the community. He said based on the company’s history, they can not be trusted and he does not believe the community’s voice is being heard on the issue. Helgeson agrees that there are good arguments on both sides of the issue, but he thinks more information needs to be given to residents. “We live in a city where there is a movement building around trying to resist Wal-Mart just doing whatever they want in the city,” Helgeson said. Helgeson said he finds it ironic that this whole issue about labor

EDITORIAL MEMORIAL DAY 2010 Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday that is observed on the last Monday of May. Memorial Day was formerly known as Decoration Day, and commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in military service. It was initially started to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War, but after World War I it was expanded to include American casualties of any war or military action. Some people are inclined to say that the world is now engaged in World War III, otherwise known as the War on Terror. Because of this, we have thousands upon thousands (if not millions) of reasons to honor the memories of the war dead, because thousands upon thousands have been killed in this ongoing war. Unfortunately, human beings have not yet been able to live without war, which means that there is not sufficient will to live without war-induced death, thereby creating a perpetual need to honor the war dead. This is truly a travesty, because the laws of nature prove that it is literally impossible to create peace through the implementation of war. The wielding of perpetual wars is very much like the Greek myth of Sisyphus, wherein Sisyphus, because of behavior deemed improper by “the gods,” was doomed to roll a huge boulder uphill, only to have it roll back down again, whereupon he has to roll it back up again, on infinitum. In other words, waging war is an act of futility that will continue on in perpetuity until it is discovered that it is impossible to achieve permanent gain by its means. Now, the truth of the matter is this: everything that exists has a purpose, so there must be a purpose for warfare. What could this be? For one, it shows the futility of its own existence; it highlights man’s inhumanity to man. To be sure, some groups temporarily benefit from the spoils of war, but the operative word here is temporary. Every society, including those that thought they were invincible, have met their day of decline. We look back at the Greek and Roman Empires and note that as great as they were, they ended. Today, there are still those who think that they are invincible, and that the world is theirs to control. This is folly. Force never has lasting beneficial impacts for one simple reason: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction! Force always, always breeds opposition by its very nature. Wars, therefore, will always beget other wars. Ultimately, there is only one sure fire antidote to war, and that is LOVE. Love is the key that will help humankind ascend to higher levels of being. Love can defuse the need for war. Hopefully, we will mature as a species and one day look back on our current situation with a certain amount of pity with the realization that many, many lives were lost in senseless wars because we could not, or would not value peace. With this said, the Crusader offers condolences to all who have lost their loved ones in the service of their country. A luta continua. 4

LETTER TO THE EDITOR DO THEY THINK ALL OF US ARE STUPID? Dear Editor: Every disaster is now being called “Obama’s Katrina.” Even a blind person can see through this mumbo jumbo. So determined are they to marginalize the effectiveness of the Obama Administration and President Obama’s attention to all things American, that they throw everything against the wall with hopes that something will stick. Who is this they that I am talking about? It’s McCain, Palin, Jindal, Boehner, McConnell, Limbaugh, Beck, Rove, Cheyney, O’Reilly, Gingrich and others of that ilk. Those sour grapes Republicans and Liberterians who, as sore losers, are looking through a microscope to see if they can find anything moving, that if it’s negative, they can attribute it to President Obama. Every natural disaster is President Obama’s fault. They don’t seem to realize that despite the failing of American education, there are those of us who can think for ourselves. There are those who do their due diligence. Believe it or not, there are those of us who managed to get an edu-
cation and we cannot be bamboozled, hoodwinked, do group think or parrot group talk. Now let’s look at the BP disaster. Sarah Palin has become an “instant authority”on what President Obama should do. How many of you remember that when she was interviewed by Katie Couric she was asked about some of the most horrendous disasters that America has faced. Assessing her new found expertise, she failed to mention the Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989 that occurred right in her front yard. Perhaps she was too busy looking at Russia from her rear window that she could not see the problem that was staring her in the face. Enter Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindahl, the one who made a complete fool of himself when he, as the spokesperson for the Republican party gave the response to the Democrats in an eerie, melodramatic “Gone With The Wind” kind of setting. He now is a champion of the virtuous right who know that President Obama is not doing enough to address the BP situation. I wonder how old President Obama was when BP was allowed to drill a much deeper than the usual oil well, a well that was supposed to be 18,000 feet, but extended far below that limit. I wonder how old President Obama was when the decision was made not to put enough controls,

regulations and oversight that allowed BP to drill a well that by other countries’ standards was not up to par. BP did not have acoustical shut off valves (or blowout preventers). There was no remote control shut off switch like that used in other major oil producing nations. Was that President Obama’s fault? What a strange coincidence that Dick Cheyney’s Haliburton factors in

BEYOND THE RHETORIC
This Will Be Worse Than Katrina By Harry Alford NNPA Columnist When the now infamous offshore BP oil rig first blew up, some called it another Katrina and many of us took that as an insult. The pain and suffering caused by Hurricane Katrina (August 2005) were biblical
Harry C. Alford and were fanned by the slow response of our own federal government. It wasn’t until former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin got on the
airwaves and screamed with hysteria that attention was brought to the tragedy. It was an international disgrace and the flashbacks of humans suffering at the Louisiana Super Dome and the Convention Center still haunt our minds. The BP oil spill is subtle and not as spontaneous. However, there appears to be no end in sight and worst of all, no answer. What we have going on here is a monster that is growing exponentially by the day. This is quickly becoming the worst environmental disaster in the history of the earth and it has yet to actually begin its deathly actions on our wildlife, land and our people. It appears that our worst fears are coming true and no one has exaggerated the ill effects about to leap upon us. It is like a small community has a “fire” but there is no fire department. The fire is spreading and is going to affect many states, oceans and, perhaps nations. This too will be biblical and no end is in sight. The blame goes to a few and the pain will affect millions. BP has been cheating in its operations. It
has ignored due diligence and circumvented the standards set by the US Department of Interior. Its partners, Halliburton and Transocean, have been equally derelict in their duties. Also, the Department of Interior appears to have been incompetent in its enforcement of the rules and permit requirements. All of this adds up to a disaster waiting to happen and, baby, it has happened. Now that the oil rig blew up and oil is spewing from the ocean floor there is an extreme need to stop the leak. That is the biggest problem of all. No one knows how to stop the leak. It is amazing – not the oil corporations involved nor the US government can figure out this leak. Clearly, it is not rocket science needed but, still, no one had a plan in place that would address this situation. They are trying to figure it out as they go and that is extremely frightening. BP has been trying to fake us out by announcing that 5,000 barrels of oil leak per day. However, others have estimated it to be much larger and the video shots that have been finally released show that BP is try-
ing to trick us. One Purdue University professor’s professional opinion is that more than 70,000 barrels of oil are leaking per day. Keep in mind that a barrel equates to 50 US gallons. Thus, close to 3.5 million gallons of oil spill into the Gulf of Mexico every day. It has been over a month and, at least, 100 million gallons of oil are in the Gulf waters. As we learned as children, oil and water don’t mix and bad things happen when they confront each other. Estimates are it may be another three months before a solution is found and this equates to 400 million gallons of oil set loose on our precious environment to wreak havoc on our plant life, wild life and economy for decades to come. How many species may disappear? How many humans will develop cancer? God only knows. Wait! It gets worse. One BP whistle blower claims that a much larger oil rig, the Atlantis, has the same safety violations as this one. If it blows, he claims, it will dwarf what we are going through right now. Nothing is going to stop it if we don’t start addressing this issue.
Safety is overdue with BP operations. Millions of people are going to lose their livelihoods and good health because of the cavalier attitudes of the aforementioned characters and entities. Will the US government wake up and start protecting us? BP is throwing “darts” at the problem. They have even used chemicals (similar to antifreeze) that are more toxic than the oil and it took the EPA weeks before they said stop it. Why was this poison on the market to begin with? We need oil and there are predetermined ways to gather it that will ensure safety to all and no damage to our environment. As this oil flows onto our beaches and into the Florida Keys and up the East Coast and then to Bermuda and other places thousands of miles away let’s get the process together. This malfeasance is about to give us a whipping that makes Katrina look minor. Mr. Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce ®. Website: www.nationalbcc.org. The Tom Joyner Morning Show on Steroids By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist I just returned from the 7-day Tom Joyner Foundation Fantastic Voyage from Miami to St. Maarten, St. Thomas and Coco Cay, Bahamas. This was my first time on the cruise and if you’ve never been on one, picture The Tom Joyner Morning Show on steroids. As was the case when I attended the first Essence Music Festival in 2002, I was advised to pace myself. Even though I tried – skipping some events and sleeping late after going to bed some mornings at 4:30 am – I still couldn’t wait to crash once I got back home. Don’t go on the cruise thinking you’re going to rest. Of all my world travels, I had never taken the time to go on a cruise and wouldn’t have gone on this one without the encouragement of Neil Foote, a longtime friend who handles publicity for the foundation. In the early 1970s, when I was a reporter for the St. Louis PostDispatch, I did an interview with Father Theodore Hesburgh, former president of the University of Notre Dame and noted civil rights activist. Hesburgh said one of his dreams was to go on a relaxing cruise and The Chicago Crusader
read 40 books. That was nearly 40 years ago but that’s something I’ve always wanted to do since Father Hesburgh planted the idea. However, I knew that riding the waves of the Atlantic Ocean with Tom Joyner and his crew would not fulfill that longtime dream. So I took only one book with me, one on W.E.B. DuBois, my hero, and did not open it. It was tough enough keeping my eyes open amid the flurry of concerts and activities. Nearly everyone was excited to see Ron Isley return to the stage. Other performers included Frankie Beverly and Maze, Charlie Wilson, Angie Stone, Chuck Brown, the Ohio Players, BarKays, Con Funk Shun, Chubb Rock, Montell Jordan, Common, Dru Hill, Kem, Tyrese, Doug E Fresh, Biz Markie, Najee, Kid ‘N Play, Ledisi, Avant and the Fat Boys. Charlie Wilson, formerly of the Gap Band, gave an outstanding performance and was also transparent about his past struggle with drugs and alcohol. Kem talked about his low period as well, mentioning that he served time in prison, was homeless and survived because of his renewed faith in God. Both “Uncle Charlie” and Kem appeared to be sincere as they discussed their faith. Enough of the serious stuff.
George E. Curry I’ve always enjoyed a good joke and the clowning we always do at family reunions. But when you mix a dozen top-notch comedians with Tom Joyner’s fun-loving followers, it’s a laugh-a-minute production that keeps you laughing long after the program is over. There was one comedian known As T-Row who bombed one night and days later was a hit. Of course, the other comedians ribbed him between the two performances. But he came back strong. He had one skit that featured Joe Jackson taking off his belt and lining up the Jacksons for a whipping. “Jermaine, why do you have all that greasy activator in your hair?

I am walking behind you at the trial and you better not make me slip.” The Joe Jackson character strikes the seat on the bar stool and tells Jermaine, “Get in the car.” Next up: Janet. “Don’t bring that little Gremlin Jermaine Dupri around me.” A couple of licks and then off to the car. Before Joe Jackson starts in on Michael, he said, “Pick up your nose.” “Reebie.” Just calling her name incited laughter. “What are you doing selling only 400 records – and I bought all them. This is a platinum family.” After a couple of whacks, he orders her to get into the car. Not only was the skit funny, a loving audience was glad to applaud the comedian’s recovery. Another comedian, AJ Jamal, likes to joke about his dark complexion. For a minute, he appeared to be serious when talking about slavery. AJ explained that lightskinned slaves received special treatment and often worked in the Big House. After setting the audience up, he added, “My family didn’t know there was a Big House. We were so far away that we were two steps from freedom and didn’t know it.” Saturday, May 29, 2010
None of the above are direct quotes, but an approximation of what I remembered while trying to keep from falling on the floor. The greatest ovation was given to Micah “Bam-Bamm” White. You had to be present to fully appreciate his performance. He essentially contrasted the halftime bands of two white universities and two Black colleges. Micah’s imitation of a drum major at a HBCU, replete with the soaring music, was so good that host J. Anthony Brown had him repeat it, which delighted the crowd even more. This was partying with a purpose at its best. The Tom Joyner Foundation has contributed $52 million to HBCUs. And his 11th annual cruise will contribute another $1 million. Thanks, Tom. My alma mater, Knoxville College, and other HBCUs cannot find a more consistent and dedicated advocate for these important institutions. George E. Black Publishers to Celebrate 70th Anniversary in New York By Pharoh Martin NNPA National Correspondent WASHINGTON (NNPA) The Nation’s only association of Black newspaper publishers has chosen to commemorate it’s 70th year of existence in New York City - the birth place of the Black press - with a line up of civil rights giants, issues panels, glitzy gathers and a first annual Legacy of Excellence dinner. The National Newspaper Publishers Association’s annual summer convention will take place at New York’s Sheraton Hotel & Towers June 16-19. This year’s theme is “Power to Influence Black America.” “Our agenda is how do we find common ground in working together to reinforce the challenges of the Black press with advertis-
ing?” said Danny Bakewell, chair of the National Newspaper Publishers Association and publisher of the Los Angeles Sentinel. “These companies have mega budgets but they don’t advertise with the Black press. Many of our major companies like AT&T, General Motors and Ford have come back online and reunited with the Black Press as major partners.” The week’s string of events are expected to draw big name civil rights leaders and members of the Congressional Black Caucus. “It benefits the reputation of NNPA to have all of our colleagues - those who we work with in the struggle - to join us to not only commemorate our 70th anniversary, but also to plan with us and gather with us to focus on how we can work together on our mutual agendas,” Bakewell said.
The conference will kick off with a “Press and the Pulpit” breakfast hosted by the Rev. Al Sharpton and a lunch with Dr. Bernice King, daughter of civil rights icon Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. The following day, a breakfast and lunch is scheduled with Marc Morial, president and chief executive officer of the National Urban League and the Rev. Jesse Jackson followed by a panel where national civil rights leaders will discuss the crisis in Black America. The panel will also include Morial, Jackson, NAACP’s president and chief executive Benjamin Jealous, Dr. Michael Lomax, the president and chief executive officer of the United Negro College Fund, Harvard Law School professor Charles Ogletree and Kathy Times, president of the National Association of Black Journalists.
Comcast Under Fire: Black Media Reps Demand More Black-owned Channels By Pharoh Martin NNPA National Correspondent WASHINGTON (NNPA) Ownership is a major driver of the Black economy. Knowing this, a group advocating Black media ownership and a former Federal Communications Commission chairman are spearheading a crusade against cable giant Comcast and their proposed merger with NBC/Universal over the cable operator’s lack of African-American owned channels on its national platform. “When you really start thinking about the areas that are critically important to us as African-Americans, one of the biggest issues is our ability to own, distribute and create our image,” said Stanley Washington, president of the National Coalition of African American Owned Media (NCAAOM). Although African-Americans make up almost 13 percent of the U.S. population, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, they own far less than one percent of the country’s television channels. Seventyseven percent of all television channels are White-owned, according to media watchdog group Free Press, who cites public FCC filings. The numbers do not include stations owned by publicly held companies whose boards are typically not very diverse. If the FFC approves the merger, Comcast, already the country’s largest cable and home Internet provider, will own 44 of the 250 channels carried on its platform. According to the Pew Project for Excellence in Journalism’s 6
2010 State of the Media Report, the top three owners of AfricanAmerican-targeted cable channels are TV One and media behemoths Time Warner and Viacom, who both own three such channels a piece. Viacom’s African-American-targeted channels such as BET, VH1 Soul and new channel Centric dedicate a significant portion of its programming toward music videos. “In addition to cable networks and Video-on-Demand, Comcast also carries several broadcast stations around the country that are African-American owned and/or targeted to African-American audiences,” said Comcast spokesperson Sena Fitzmaurice in a statement. “Our desire to work with African-American media owners extends proudly to our seminal role in partnering with Radio One to launch TV One in 2003.” After Black Entertainment Television’s sale to Viacom by Robert Johnson in 2003, TV One is the closest thing to a Black-owned cable channel that Comcast has on its basic cable platform. Comcast owns 33 percent of the Black-targeted channels along with Radio One, which owns a 40 percent interest. Until it became a publicly-traded company, Radio One, with it’s 69 radio stations and other media properties, was the largest Black-owned media company in the U.S. Its African-American founder Cathy Hughes and her son Alfred Liggins, who is the company’s chief executive and chairman of TV One’s board, still control 90 percent of the company’s vote. Saturday, May 29, 2010
Still, Washington contends that TV One is not technically “Black-owned” because although Radio One is a majority owner it still operates as a publicly-traded company. Washington is demanding that if the FCC approves the Comcast and NBC/Universal merger, then at least 25 channels or 10 percent of the 250 channel capacity that Comcast carries in its basic cable platform should be allocated to Black-owned cable channels. The demand is not unprecedented. When the FCC approved the merging of satellite radio company’s Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. and XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc in 2008, the companies agreed to dedicate 8 percent of their channels to African American-owned media. Are there even enough viable African-American ownership groups available to sustain 25 cable channels? “Absolutely,” said Washington. “We have a number of AfricanAmerican led groups that have come to the table and they have tried to build themselves strong, viable channel opportunities in the industry.”

The state’s highest ranking bird – no, not the Cardinal—but the Bald Eagle otherwise known as Pat Quinn is in some deep doo doo. But we do hear this deal is to make that crazy Brady fellow the top man and we also hear that a whole bunch of Negroes are saying they don’t care. “We aint getting nothing from Pat Quinn no way—what’s the difference?” Now what may confuse some people is how all of these same people went loco on Dan Hynes when he put out that ad with Harold Washington. The ad had our late beloved Holy Mayor Washington telling us what he really thought of the bald eagle— and he wasn’t stuttering like Gene Sawyer. However, three Black congressmen did an unusual thing and teamed up and called every telephone number they had to tell us to ignore Holy Washington and to go for Pat Quinn. Now at least one of those congressmen has been going around the town saying he wouldn’t touch Quinn with a 15 foot pole if it was made out of all that cheese whiz he used to eat. While some political Negroes is running around the town pretending they upset about Art Turner, the real reason folk is turning they’re back on Quinn is he ain’t giving up the money. He has not doled out any of that good state money to their kids, churches, groups and front organizations. The state is broke. It also ain’t set too well that he ain’t hired nobody but a bunch of Mexicans and liberal white people who have no clue as to what they be doing down there.

BUSINESS Linking America’s Racial Wealth Divide to Consumer Finance Reform New University Research Ties Wealth Disparities to Public Policies By Charlene Crowell NNPA Columnist As the U.S. Senate continues deliberations on the largest federal financial reform proposal since the 1930s New Deal, much of the major media commentary has focused on procedural tactics, partisan strategies and proposed amendments. While such discussions reveal Washington insider politics, a distinctly different set of priorities exist in America’s heartland. For people affected by layoffs or business closures, the top concern is often whether unemployment benefits will last until a new or better job is secured. Others who watched their neighbors lose homes to foreclosure wonder whether their upside-down mortgage loans will ever be right side up again. Then there are students who heeded their parents urging to get a college education and now have a new diploma in one hand, a stack of student loans in the other and no job prospects on the horizon.
Charlene Crowell Among African-Americans these effects are not only experienced; but exacerbated by other harsh realities. When it comes to access to fair credit, being black in America imposes an undeniable financial burden. Whether shopping for groceries, a car, a home, or insurance, minority consumers often pay what should be illegal mark-ups. In bygone eras, cities flourished with conveniently-located full ser-
vice banks in nearly every downtown or city shopping district. Today, by contrast, most urban centers are home to clusters of high-cost consumer financial services such as check-cashing stores and payday lenders. These economic disparities have been the focus of many research publications by the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL). Now, the Institute on Assets and Social Policy (IASP), part of Brandeis University’s Heller School for Social Policy and Management has released the first in a series of publications on America’s wealth gap. The first installment, The Racial Wealth Gap Increases fourfold, reviews how public policy has been a major contributor to the loss of wealth in African-American families. Using data from families over a 23-year period of time, IASP found that despite the enactment of legal safeguards, discrimination in housing, credit, and labor markets persisted. Secondly, public policies that took effect from 1984-2007 such as tax cuts on investment income, inheritances, or tax deductions for retirement accounts, college savings -all benefitted higher-income fami-
BRIDGING THE DIGITAL DIVIDE Improving Life with Broadband-Enabled Medical Care Telemedicine, while not a new concept, is still unknown to many people of color - a potentially fatal result of the Digital Divide. Broadband isn’t just about “pipes” into the home – it’s about saving lives. Telemedicine can improve one’s quality of life and help consumers save money on health care. A stellar example can be found in Florida, where a pilot program provides mobile blood pressure monitoring. The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and Ideal Life teamed up to provide monitoring devices to hypertensive patients. Users take their
own blood pressure readings daily, and then send them to their healthcare teams. Programs like this can provide functional independence for older adults who are unable to visit a doctor’s office regularly. Other remote monitoring technologies, like the in-home monitoring systems used by the Department of Veterans Affairs, have also been proven to save tens of thousands of dollars in patient care. Broadband-enabled monitoring in hospitals has been proven to saves lives. In a hospital, the at-
tention a patient receives is limited to the number of doctors and nurses on duty. But with remote monitoring, more clinicians are able to watch for sudden changes in the patient that might lead to serious complications. The earlier the changes are caught, the earlier the patient can be rescued. For years, experts in the healthcare field have embraced telemedicine. In the minority community, where both healthcare quality and broadband adoption are the lowest, telemedicine is essential. To enable telemedicine, broadband is essential too.

lies. The sum of these two developments led to a four-fold expansion of this country’s racial wealth gap. In 1984, the racial weal gap between Whites and Blacks was $20,000. By 2007, the gap grew to $95,000. Even among African-Americans who have worked in well-paying jobs, a wealth gap still exists when compared to their peers in the workforce. Other key ISAP findings revealed: Many low-income and minority households must turn to costly lending products because they have no other options; The average high-income AfricanAmerican family had only $18,000 in assets, compared to middle-income whites who accumulated $74,000; In 2007, one in ten African-Americans owed at least $3,600 – nearly double their debt burden in 1984; At least 25 percent of AfricanAmerican families had no assets at all to turn to in times of economic
hardship. After citing a litany of losses in African-American communities, IASP offered a clear and concise recommendation, “Public policies have and continue to play a major role in creating and sustaining the racial wealth gap, and they must play a role in closing it.” So the next time a newspaper article or news program reports on the latest federal consumer finance reform development, remember that public policies set the nation’s playing field. Even more importantly for Black America, the new federal policy proposals have the potential to reverse the serious economic setbacks of the past 23 years. Intruder shot dead by . . . (Continued from page 1) Chicago. Otis McDonald is a senior citizen and resident of Chicago, who is suing to strike down the city’s ban on handguns. The case has been getting lots of attention in the media and is being talked about throughout the city’s African American community. Everyday as news of innocent people being killed or victimized by criminals hits the newspapers and airwaves, residents think it is time to end the ban on handguns. Attorney David G. Sigale is representing McDonald and says he too is noticing the shift in public sentiment regarding the right for citizens to own handguns. “Ever since starting this case I’ve heard from supporters who at a minimum believe in the basic premise to defend their home. Certainly now that it is reported more in the headlines, people are saying ‘why shouldn’t we have the right to defend ourselves, especially in the neighborhoods that we live in and where the criminals are ignoring the laws in the first place’?” Sigale said. Neighbors of the elderly couple say they are good people and longtime residents. is the second time in a week a Chicago citizen protecting his/her family had to take matters into his/her own hands. Last week a retired Chicago Police officer fatally wounded one man and seriously injured another after they tried to rob his son of a motorcycle. The son, Chicago Police Officer Thomas Wortham IV was killed, but the sentiment to have residents armed has gained momentum. “I think we should be able to shoot all of these young fools who are out causing all this trouble,” said David Vance, an East Garfield resident. “We are tired of innocent people dying while the criminals, who have no regard for life, get to keep living even if it’s in prison. This man was a hero today.” The Crusader spoke with the son of the man who shot the intruder. He did not want to be identified but he too agrees that it is time to get rid of the city’s ban on handguns. He lives in the upstairs apartment of the building. He said elderly people like his parents and single mothers, don’t have a chance against today’s criminals unless they are armed. “I’m not for guns in the streets and the concealed carry laws that some states have, but I think we should be allowed to have them in our homes as long as the owners are responsible,” he said. “My father did what he had to do.” Ironically the mother of the suspect said she had no ill-will at all towards the homeowner who killed her son. She said her son has been in and out of prison and was just released in December of 2009. 9

Mayor Daley welcomes first class of Chicago Career Tech Partnership with Business, Non-Profits Aims to Re-train Middle Class Workers for Jobs of the Future Mayor Richard M. Daleyrecently welcomed 175 Chicago residents as members of the first class of Chicago Career Tech, a new public-private partnership whose goal is to re-train unemployed middle class workers and put them back to work in areas such as health care, information technology, telecommunications, digital media and other fast-growing industries with increasing career opportunities. “Chicago Career Tech reflects one of our fundamental objectives, which is to transform our economy and make Chicago a leader in the technology based economy of the 21st century,” Daley said in a news conference, held at the office of the law firm of Mayer Brown, 71 S. Wacker Dr. that followed the Mayor’s remarks to the new class. “To do that means we must both recruit the businesses of tomorrow as well as train our workforce for the jobs they will provide,” he said. The Mayor said that because of the recession, there has never been a more important time than right now to establish a program like Chicago Career Tech. He said that in times such as these, government can’t add thousands of permanent, new government jobs at the state or local level, so getting people back to work requires recruiting new businesses and supporting the efforts of every business in Chicago to grow and better compete in the new economy. “From today on, Chicago Career Tech will play a big role in ensuring the future economic security of
Chicago,” he said. The program is aimed over the long term at helping about 30,000 unemployed Chicago middle class workers get retrained in technology. The goal is that after the retraining, they will obtain new jobs. Over the long term, the City will invest $25 million from its Parking Meter Human Infrastructure Fund to support Career Tech. The first class had 754 applicants for 175 positions. The program plans to double the size of the class that begins in October. To take part in the program, an applicant must be a City resident, be receiving State of Illinois Unemployment benefits or have exhausted those benefits, have made between $25,000 and $75,000 annually in a previous job, have a minimum of a high school diploma or GED Degree and complete two interviews and demonstrate a commitment to 6 day a week, 6 month program. In fact, almost half the members of the first class have a bachelor’s degree or higher. The average age of the class is 46. “This is a group of workers that’s increasingly at risk of becoming permanently unemployed because of changing workforce needs, and we can’t let that happen,” Daley said. Chicago Career Tech requires two days of classroom training, two days of job shadowing in the private sector and two days of service learning at a not-for-profit. Already, 28 Chicago area businesses have committed to provide mentoring and hand-on learning experience to the class and 51 Chicago area non-profits have committed to providing two days a week of service-based learning assignments. “The program has received sig-

Andrew’s essay was titled, “What My Grandfather Means To Me.” The subject of his essay is his grandfather, John L. Smith, who is the General Manager of the Crusader. In his essay in part Andrew said, “My Grandfather means security, wisdom ad love to me. When I think of him I know I can count on him for whatever I need, but more than that, he teaches me through his example. “Never give up,” my Grandpa has told me most of my life. Fans and many who were beneficiaries of her generosity have left messages saying how good Anne was to those who were less fortunate or those who could use a cheerful pick-me up. Anne strong will and determination made it possible to be so much to so many even throughout her illness. Dorothy Leavell, publisher of the Crusader shared this statement: “The Crusader family has lost a great contributor to our publication for more than 35 years in the death of Anne Blair. I have had the privilege of knowing and working with Anne over all of these years. She was a pioneer in “Blacks in Chicago Theatre,” playing small walk-on and other supporting roles in the beginning, but her greatest contribution was opening the doors wide for film critics of color. “She remained faithful until she

Often she would advise me of things that may help me health-wise, but most of all she heaped praise upon me and this praise seemed to always come when I was having a tough day. “We shall miss Anne, but we are so much better because we had the privilege of knowing her. May she rest in peace.” Bonnie DeShong another Crusader film critic writes, “Anne was a lover of film and community and gave her all to both. Men in the field of reviewing films get most of the notoriety and fame but when it came to expressing the feeling of a film, Anne was one of the best. She gave it to you straight and you could tell that she loved the art of filmmaking. She is someone we all looked up to. Though her spirit lives on, she will be missed.” And Elaine Hegwood Bowen, film critic for Entertainment: Chicago Style shared, “I met Ms. Blair many years ago, and it just so happens that my sister knew her from the Grant A Wish, Inc. Such presentations prevent inter-ethnic and interracial accord.” She continued in her writings, “Viewers who may have never met people of a different ethnic persuasion gather knowledge, and believe what is shown about them in film or on TV.” By 1979 a Pro & Con junior program was created which later became Grant A Wish, Inc. This program was created to provide basic items for needy, handicapped, abused and abandoned children in order to help them stay in school. Anne’s work earned her recognition by many organizations. She was honored with the Cook County Bar Humanitarian Award, C.F. Moore Foundation Excellence Award, Martin Luther King Community Service Award, Boy Scouts of America to name a few. She also held memberships with several professional and community-based organizations including the Chicago Film Critics Association. During an interview with Dann Gire, president and founding director of the Chicago Film Critics Association he remembered Anne in this way: Anne Blair was one of the truest, purest souls who have ever walked this earth. She radiated optimism and hope, regardless of her personal circumstances. People loved her, I loved her, because you couldn’t help but bask in that magical radiance. A single conversation with Anne could elevate your mood, and give you the feeling that anything was possible. I think that was because Anne, in her heart, truly believed in the goodness around her, and shut out the voices of despair and cynicism that others often listen to. Anne was a great supporter of many positive, community-based programs, especially her pride and joy, The Grant A Wish program that helps those in need. She was a valuable member of the Chicago Film Critics Assn. for many years, until her health deteriorated and she could no longer attend screenings. Anne was tireless, selfless and determined, so that when personal calamity hit — be it the death of a loved one or the loss of a job or funding — she never lost her spark of joy and appreciation for the good things she still had. I have been blessed to know Anne for about 30 years. During that time, I have not met anyone with her level of determination to do good in the world. Our planet is not a colder place now that Anne has passed on. Rather, I like to think that she has supplied her own version of global warming,

BET and Kennedy-King College partner to remount Teddy Pendergrass story Black Ensemble Theater (BET) and Kennedy-King College (KKC) will co-produce three shows, kicking off with a remounted production of the critically-acclaimed “I Am Who I Am (The Story of Teddy Pendergrass),” which first premiered at Black Ensemble Theater in March 2008. “I Am Who I Am” will run at KKC Theatre, located at 740 W. 63rd Street, for two weekends only, beginning Friday, June 4, 2010. Shows will be Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 pm and Sundays at 3:00 pm. BET’s held over production of “My Brother’s Keeper: (The Story of the Nicholas Brothers)” closes May 30 at the Ensemble’s theater, 4520 N. Beacon St. The partnership is expected to be beneficial for both organizations by increasing BET’s awareness and audience on the South Side of Chicago and gaining exposure and awareness for KKC’s beautiful new theatre located in the new college building. As part of the BET’s au-
Kevin McIlvaine dience development plan, the theater is producing on the Southside of Chicago in order to increase and build the audience for its new Black Ensemble Theater Cultural Center scheduled to break ground this summer. Kennedy-King College has built a new state of the art
300 seat theater and through this partnership will receive expansive exposure and increasing awareness for this beautiful facility. BET will also work with Kennedy-King students, including them in the backstage process to help enhance their educational experience and prepare them for work in the professional theater arena. Produced, written and directed by Jackie Taylor, the award winning production of “I Am Who I Am” stars Kevin McIlvaine and RaShawn Thompson as Teddy Pendergrass and tells the story of the late singer who first gained recognition with Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes in 1972. In 1977, he went solo. He was the first Black/African American singer to sell five platinum albums in a row, including TP and This Is Teddy Pendergrass, which produced hits like “Close The Door,” “Turn Off The Lights,” and “Joy.” Pendergrass’ career was at an all-
RaShawn Thompson time high when, in 1982, he suffered a car accident which left him paralyzed from mid-chest down. Pendergrass became a quadriplegic but after a year of therapy he started recording again. The first single in 1984, “Hold Me in your
Arms,” was a duet with the 19year-old Whitney Houston. The five-time Grammy® Award nominated artist made history by having survived as a quadriplegic for 26 years and accomplishing what no other in his circumstance has been able to accomplish. Tickets are $40; discounts are available for students, seniors, and groups. Group rates are available by calling the Black Ensemble Theater Box Office at 773-769-4451, or visiting www.ticketmaster.com. All performances will take place at the Kennedy-King College Theatre, 740 W. 63rd Street, Chicago.

Blue Eyes.” Valli’s vocal range incorporated a unique high falsetto which he has employed to great advantage throughout his long career as an entertainer. Backed by the Four Seasons, Valli has sold more than 100 million recordings worldwide. The program began with Guest Conductor Edwin Outwater leading the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in Rossini’s Overture to “The Barber of Seville” followed by Valli and entourage singing selections from their greatest hits. Con-
ductor Outwater, Director of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony (Kitchener, Ontario, Canada), recently conducted the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the training orchestra for the CSO, in a free community concert May 2 at the South Shore Cultural Center. As conceived by the League of the CSOA, corporations/companies purchase ticket packages that include two to sixteen seats at the symphony for the concert which is preceded by a haute cuisine dining experience that is attended exclusively by Chicago’s corporate community and their guests. Corporate night is not open to the public. This
year’s event was attended by 800 guests for dinner and 1,700 for the concert, earning $1,300,000 and surpassing their goal for 2010. Among the many Chicagoans attending Corporate Night were famed physicist and former President of Morehouse College (Atlanta, GA) Dr. Walter Massey and his wife, Shirley. The 2010 Chairman of Corporate Night was Peter D. McDonald, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer of United Airlines. Linda Neumann of Lake Bluff was Corporate Chair for the League. League President is Cheryl Istvan of Chicago.

Pullman residents hear another side of Wal-Mart story (Cont’d from page 3) rights and wages is taking place in Pullman. In 1894 Pullman workers went on strike because of low wages and they lived in a company town where they were not allowed to own their homes and the money they were paid oftentimes went back to the company via the local grocery store. Pullman is also the site where the African American Pullman Porter workers organized the first African American Union in 1937 after a 12 year fight led by A. Phillip Randolph. “These Black workers were literally treated like slaves on the trains where
they worked as porters,” Helgeson explained. “Nobody called them by name, they only worked on tips so they really had to play that servile role. They worked hard to get the community backing behind the movement and they won the battle, which is what we’re trying to do,” Helgeson said. Sherry Williams has lived in Pullman for over five years. Her concerns with Wal-Mart are largely with what she feels is a “global responsibility” to give their workers fair wages and the abuses they have towards female employees. She said there are

Lyric Opera of Chicago in the black for . . . Elixir of Love.” Commenting on the company’s year-end results, Mason said, “The recession has had a significant and lasting effect on our patrons, particularly in subscription sales. While the company had its third-best year ever in individualticket sales, these results did not make up for the lower subscription level. Fortunately, we are in a strong financial position. We were able to cover revenue shortfall with Campaign for Excellence funds, and members of our various Boards were particularly generous in this very difficult environment. We are also seeing positive growth in our endowment, which at year end stood at $139.8 million—a 30% increase from the prior year.” Mason stated that fiscal responsibility was essential to maintaining the compaThe Chicago Crusader

Lyric’s 2010-11 season will comprise 68 performances, down from 77 in 2009-10. Through layoffs and not filling vacant positions, we have again reduced our fulltime administrative staff. Nonpaid furloughs have been instituted for all staff. For the second consecutive year, salaries have been frozen—and in my case, reduced—for administrative staff in the top 15% of the pay scale. And recognizing our need for fiscal prudence, our orchestra musicians and stagehands have agreed to reasonable wage contracts, as all our unions must do for the long-term health of the company.”
Mason reported that total operating expenses for fiscal year 2011 are projected at $52.4 million, with the fundraising goal increased to $17.2 million. Lyric’s Annual Meeting Dinner, a fundraising event for the company, took place May 24 at the Four Seasons Hotel. At that time, James L. Alexander, Vice-President of the Lyric Board of Directors, and Co-Trustee of The Elizabeth Morse Charitable Trust and The Elizabeth Morse Genius Charitable Trust, received Lyric’s highest honor, the Carol Fox Award. The Trusts have sponsored eleven different Lyric productions. Lyric’s 2010-11 season opens October 1 with a new production of Verdi’s “Macbeth” starring Thomas Hampson and Nadja Michael.

who just want to work part-time or for people who need to build an employment history. Earlier this month, a vote on the proposed Wal-Mart store in Pullman was postponed until June by the City Council. Efforts to bring a Wal-Mart to the Chatham Marketplace in Gresham have been ongoing for nearly five years without success. Currently the only Wal-Mart store in the city is in the Austin community on the West Side.

Breast Cancer awareness event reaches thousands This past Mother’s Day, hundreds of thousands of women were reached and heard messages of hope, as the 4th annual Pin-ASister Sunday™/Domingo de Examínate Comadre™ event was performed in hundreds of houses of worship across the city, state, nation and globally. From Chicago to Springfield to Massachusetts to Jalisco, Mexico, and Swaziland, South Africa, women were empowered while participating in Pin-A-Sister Sunday™/Domingo de Examínate Comadre™/, the hallmark collaborative event of the Pin-ASister™/Examinate Comadre™
initiative. This faith-based campaign uses the “power of the pulpit” to encourage women to get mammography screenings and combat the grave disparities in breast cancer deaths for AfricanAmerican and Hispanic women. The event helped strengthen the already special bond held between father and daughter, as the Rev. Edward Whitehead hosted and Angie Sims coordinated the Pin-A-Sister Sunday™/Domingo de Examínate Comadre™ event at New Greater Exodus M.B. Church on Chicago’s West Side. "I consider it an honor to be
