Michael Jackson pour in lauding the King of Pop’s musical genius. A Tuesday musical tribute at the famed Harlem Apollo Theater in New York had spectators dancing in the aisles. A lone white bedazzled glove and black fedora was

placed on a stool on the stage where the singing group, Jackson 5 got their start. And last Sunday, a salute to Jackson headlined the BET Awards. Actor/singer Jamie Foxx donned a white glove and red

jacket performing Jackson’s hit “Beat It.” Even church worshippers throughout Chicagoland took time from their Sunday morning services to pay homage to Jackson. Jackson, 50, died of cardiac arrest on

Thursday, June 25. Bishop Larry D. Trotter, pastor of Sweet Holy Spirit Church, summed it up best when he described Jackson as “in a catego(Continued on page 3)

By J. Coyden Palmer Five years ago when he was a rookie Alderman, Howard Brookins lost a battle with the city to bring a Walmart supercenter to his South Side ward. Now Brookins is back and still resolved in his commitment to bring the world’s largest retailer to the Chatham Market shopping center on west 83rd Street. The 21st ward leader held a press conference earlier this week imploring his colleagues to vote to bring the retailer into the community to help improve the area. “We need jobs, plain and simple,” Brookins said. “I’m asking my other colleagues to get on board.” Supporters of the plan say the unions and alderman who vote against the idea are hypocrites, seeing that a Walmart was al-

cause they like but because they feel they gotta do it to feed themselves. I’ll take any kind of work at this point.” Those sentiments aren’t lost on Brookins. He cited the rising unemployment numbers and the city’s budget shortfall as reasons to let Walmart open in his ward. Despite being defeated five years ago, Brookins said the fight was never finished (Continued on page 2)

Coalition of Black ministers endorse Brown By J. Coyden Palmer Saying it’s time for a Board President with a proven record of reform, fiscal responsibility, integrity and a heart for the people, a group of African American ministers are throwing their support behind Clerk of the Circuit Court Dorothy Brown. Standing next to Brown during a press conference at the South Loop Hotel on June 30th, the coalition believes Brown is the strongest candidate with the most experience to overhaul county government. “Dorothy Brown is qualified and has done a great job as Clerk of the Circuit Court, managing a large operation efficiently and effectively,” said Rev. Marshall Hatch, Pastor of the New Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church and spokesperson for the delegation of clergy. “She is independent and can not be bought out. Cook County is in a budget crisis and with her proven track record of financial responsibility it makes here the best candidate for Board President.” The coalition of ministers, who represent over 300 churches of

various denominations throughout the county, are concerned about health care services, crime education and rising taxes. They have been very disappointed with current Board President Todd Stroger. The group was been engrossed in a battle with Stroger over his handling of the county’s budget crisis and cuts to healthcare services, which the ministers say is vital to the poor. Brown announced her candidacy for Board President just last week, adding that her campaign platform will be based on her record of reform and proven fiscal responsibility. Having served in the Clerk’s Office for the past nine years, Brown has brought technology into the office to make things run smoother and faster. A complete upgrade in computer technology has made it easier for attorneys and citizens to track court cases, even from their homes. As a Certified Public Accountant with an MBA and law degree, Rev. Hatch thinks she is the best leader during these delicate financial times. Brown, who in the past ran unsuccessfully for mayor, was

Bring Walmart to the South Side (Continued from page 1) and he felt he owed it to the citizens of his ward to try again. “Everyone sees how dire the economic situation is now. The ongoing delay would postpone when the store will be open and our ability to put people to work,” Brookins said. In April, he brought the issue up again by introducing an amendment to the Chatham Market shopping center development agreement that would repeal a clause aimed at keeping out Walmart. The amendment is stuck after being deferred to the July meeting of the city’s Rules Committee. Brookins said he believes it will be hard for his colleagues to say no now because the economic climate has changed and those who had reservations about union backlash can’t politically afford to be so timid give the dire need for citizen employment. “Back in 2004 our economy was much healthier so people felt there were jobs at other places,” Brookins said. “That’s not the case anymore. People are hurting. Any job is better than no job at this point for some, whether it is union or not.” One of those who changed their mind is Marian Burke. A retired Amtrak employee, Burke is raising her 18 year-old grandson who graduated in June from Harlan 2

She’s always been prounion and points to the history of the Pullman Porters, the first African American labor union in the United States. But she said the unemployment rate now along with a bad economy has changed her mind on the Walmart proposal. “I feel bad for a lot of these kids, especially the ones who have kids of their own,” Burke said. “We have to be honest, there was teenage pregnancy back in the 1940’s in the Black community and you would just have to get a

job and support your family. I think the kids today want to do the same thing but aren’t being allowed to do so for whatever reason. While I believe in unions, I don’t believe they have the right to tell the city not to build a store that will help other people live their life. I say get the store built, hire the people and then make a push to have the workers unionized.” Opponents of the plan are threatening to resurrect the bigbox ordinance that sets a minimum wage that workers must earn to go along with benefits. Ald. Richard Mell (33rd) plans on setting up a public hearing surrounding the issue. Brookins said Chicagoans have

spent $500 million at suburban Walmart stores and thinks it’s silly for opponents to think that is going to stop. He said the decisions are only causing the city to lose money. He pointed to the Walmart store in Evergreen Park, less than two miles from his ward as an example. A spokesperson for Walmart agrees and said they are remaining “cautiously optimistic” about adding another store inside city limits. “The community has really articulated this situation simply — the city needs jobs, it needs tax revenue and economic opportunity,” a Walmart spokesman said. “That goes double for areas like the community around our proposed site at 83rd and Stewart. think they see our project as a way to help to respond to the end of the food deserts on the South Side.” Mayor Daley is standing clear of the battle. Political analysts say Daley doesn’t want to pick a union fight at this time because he needs their support for the city’s Olympic bid. Brookins hopes the public pressure from citizens will give him the required votes this time around. Last time he only missed by one vote. Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce President Jerry Roper is a supporter of Brookins and said it’s time that organized labor and its allies in the City Council put a stop to all of the shenanigans because they are playing with people’s lives. He also said the autonomy of the community is at stake. “It is our community. It is our choice,” Roper said. “There needs to be a sense of urgency. This needs to happen now to reduce the 10.7 [citywide] unemployment rate, which is actually 20 percent in the community where this project would be built. We have to reduce the fooddeserts, to get people back to work, to make families feel whole again. It’s very demoralizing to lose your job. The $65 million project would bring over 600 full and part-time jobs to the community, according to Brookins. The Chicago Crusader

HUD awards over $1 billion in recovery act funds Funding to stimulate the production of thousands of housing units stalled by recession while creating jobs across the country U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan today announced that HUD is approving plans submitted by state housing finance agencies for $1,035,322,485 to jump start affordable housing programs in states throughout the country that are currently stalled due to the economic recession. Funded

through American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act), HUD’s new Tax Credit Assistance Program (TCAP) will allow 26 state housing finance agencies to resume funding of affordable rental housing projects across the nation while stimulating employment in the hard-hit construction trades. “The purpose of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is to jumpstart the nation’s ailing economy, with a primary focus on creating and saving jobs in the near term,” said Secretary Dono-

Coalition of Black . . . (Continued from page 2) tures and stop taxing the public to make up for budget shortfalls. She also believes a person with a warm personality is going to be needed who can reach out to all communities and extend an olive branch to those who have felt their voices weren’t heard under Stroger. She added the public must trust and see that whoever is elected isn’t just hiring and promoting their unqualified friends and family members to important county positions. “It’s time to stop the infighting,” Brown said. “We need someone who can pull people together, work with each other, compromise, but keeping in sight that we are working for the people and not for ourselves.” Brown said people are hurting right now with job losses, foreclosures and poor healthcare. She believes it is the responsibility of government leaders to solve these problems and it starts by discontinuing the notion of putting people in positions that aren’t qualified. “The citizens are showing us now that they are ready for someone that has a background of fiscal responsibility and reform credentials,” Brown said. “I’m going to do the same thing that I’ve done in the Clerk’s office. Not only am I going to find ways to raise new revenue I’m going to bring the county into the 21st century in every aspect. I want to start a Cook County integrated systems committee in general to ensure that the information systems department of the county are doing things in the most efficient manner, purchasing equipment in the most cost-effective way and making sure all of our systems are working together so they are more customer friendly for the citizens.” Just recently, Brown signed a

contract to raise revenue by allowing advertising on the Clerk’s website. She said taking advantage of the endless possibilities of the internet is something she learned from the Obama campaign and she doesn’t see why it can’t work for the county government as well. She also feels that as technology changes how government operates, it’s important to educate the public on how to use that technology. “I want to find ways to make sure that people know what the Cook County government is all about,” she said. “As County Board President, I would work with the city. I know Mayor Daley has been attempting to get the city Wi-Fi enhanced, however, for whatever reason, there has been a problem. But I think if we can combine the resources of the county and city…we can make money with the Wi-Fi network and we want to make sure we are capitalizing on that.” Christopher Elliot covers business travel and publishes a weekly online business newsletter at www.elliot.com. He ranks the top Wi-Fi cities in America as Seattle, San Francisco, Austin, Portland and Atlanta. He said with a metropolis as large as Chicago, local leaders and citizens must push to make the area Wi-Fi. “I asked business travelers to tell me where they felt the most at home with their wireless devices,” Elliot began. “These unwired cities have a lot in common. They’re early adopters, and they have the enthusiastic backing of their residents and government to create vast connectivity zones. What’s more, hooking up to one of these big networks is either cheap or free. In other words, these cities think of Wi-Fi as a basic necessity for their residents.”

Secretary Shaun Donovan van. “The funding being announced today is an important step in achieving the goal of putting the American people back to work while providing quality, affordable housing options for low-income families at a time when those options are needed more than ever.” The current economic and financial crises present significant

challenges for the construction industry, particularly residential construction. One of the by-products of this crisis has been the freezing of investments in the low income housing tax credit (LIHTC) market. The tax credits create an incentive for investors to provide capital to developers to build multi-family rental housing for moderate- and low-income families across the nation. Since the contraction of the credit market, and as traditional investors remain on the sidelines, the value of tax credits has plummeted. Consequently, as many as 1,000 projects (containing nearly 150,000 units of housing) are on hold across the country. In response, the Recovery Act provides $2.25 billion for TCAP, a grant program to provide capital investments in these stalled LIHTC developments. HUD is awarding these TCAP grants by formula to 52 state housing credit agencies (all 50 states plus the District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico) to

complete construction of qualified housing projects that will ultimately provide affordable housing to an estimated 35,000 households nationwide. Since a major purpose of this program is job creation, the Recovery Act establishes ambitious deadlines for expenditure of grant funds and requires state housing credit agencies to give priority to projects that can begin immediately and be completed by February 16, 2012. Under this first round of TCAP funds, state housing finance agencies in the states below are receiving awards today (the remaining 26 grants will follow in the coming weeks): Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin.

The tribute featured a music video montage of Jackson’s chart topping hits including “Black or White,” “Beat It,” “Don’t Stop ‘til You get Enough” and “Remember the Time.” Chicago Idol winner Russoul sang a moving rendition of Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror,” also donning a white glove. Laughter and cheers rung out among the packed sanctuary as congregants, both young and old; male and female took to the pulpit to attempt Jackson’s famous moonwalk as the church band belted out the tune ‘Beat It.” Even a Michael Jackson impersonator named Rico performed the entertainer’s infamous dance moves. Jackson’s death has not set in for Rico, who said the world will miss Jackson’s creativity and music. “I just want to show people that the legacy of Michael Jackson will live on through the fans, the impersonators and to let them know that Michael will continue to be the King of Pop,” Rico said. recording artist Ricky Dillard said Jackson and his music transcended race, color, and creed as was evident with the song “We are the World.” Dillard noted that artists from different countries and races came together to record the song to raise funds for and bring attention to famine in Africa. Dillard said Jackson’s music “brought us together, made us dance and think about the message.” Brandon Willingham, 18, said his generation did not grow up on Jackson’s music, but he has a fondness for it now from listening to his parent’s old LPs and 45s. Willingham said Jackson’s music had positive undertones compared to what is played on the airways now. “He is not asking young people to go out and kill or do drugs, all the negative things we see today,” he said. South Chicago resident Tonya Hickenbottom called Jackson a great performer. But she was still saddened by his sudden death. “We grew up on Michael Jackson so it is like we lost one of our own,” she said. A smile came across Earlene Cain’s face when she recalled taking her then 10-year-old son to see Jackson perform at the International Amphitheater in 1978. The Chatham resident said one word can described the concert,

“Thriller.” “He thrilled everybody, even then when he first started his solo career,” said Cain who also expressed concerns over news reports that alleged prescription drug abuse may have led to the top selling recording artist’s death. “That’s the only sad thing about it.” Viola Harris was headed to Gary, IN., after the service with relatives to see Jackson’s boyhood home. Harris, a Hammond, IN resident, never saw Jackson or his siblings in concert, but counts herself as a fan. She brushed aside criticisms that Jackson denounced his heritage by altering his ethnic features. Jackson suffered from vitiligo, a disease where the skin loses it pigmentation. “A lot of people say that Michael was trying to be white. I, in fact, know he wasn’t,” Harris said, noting her sister too suffers from the same disease. “Her whole body has changed. She doesn’t look white. She doesn’t look Black. [But] no matter what we think … God knows his heart.” Juanita Negrete, of South Chicago, hoped teens would be influenced by Jackson’s creativity to make music that celebrates life. “God does things in different ways,” Negrete said, tearing up as she spoke about Jackson. “He was meant to ... be here for 50 years.” 3

INDEPENDENCE AND AFFIRMATIVE RE-ACTION The great orator and abolitionist Frederick Douglass once questioned the celebration of July 4th by Black Americans. Of course, he didn’t use the word “Black” in those days to refer to people of a darker hue, but we understand what he meant. Black people have fought alongside white people in all of the wars since the inauguration of the United States. Crispus Attucks was the first soldiers to lose his life in the Revolutionary War, and thousands upon thousands, if not millions, of Black people have lost their lives serving this country. Black people have had a hand in every aspect of American life, sometimes out front and sometimes behind the scenes. If the true contributions of African Americans were really known by most people, there might be a different perception of the race as a whole. Today, however, we still have a way to go in order to get the props due to the darker brothers and sisters. July 4, 2009, finds us in a quandary. We have an African American president, arguably the most powerful political seat in the world. We have Black people in all walks of life contributing to life on a daily basis. But we are also breaking other kinds of records. Our children are killing themselves, African Americans are disproportionately visited by any number of diseases, Black unemployment is still greater than it should be. And to add distasteful icing on the cake, the U.S. Supreme Court just dealt a setback to affirmative action. When thinking about these things, the notion of independence takes on new meaning. With an apparent rise in hate crimes, some pundits are suggesting that there is a backlash from people who did not want to see Barack Obama ascend to the presidency. What this means is that Black people should look toward a new manifestation of independence: that of self-mastery and self-reliance. In the final analysis, all underdogs must take the initiative in order to beat the odds. Power is very seldom, if ever, just given away. It is always won, or earned. Because of this, African Americans should re-define what the 4th of July means. It should be looked upon as an opportunity to rid our homes of unwanted demons of defeat and despair and to move to the head of the class. This is not a fanciful notion; it has been done by many, MANY African Americans, living and dead, on an individual basis. Today, some of the most accomplished people in the world are descended from American slaves. If they can do it, we all can do it. It is a matter of freeing our minds and letting go of the comfortable bosom of victimhood. July 4th should become a celebration of Black Independence from the unsavory past of slavehood. We should have an Affirmative Reaction of righteousness and self-reliance; of mental and emotional health – real freedom! With this said, please have a happy and SAFE 4th of July holiday! 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Michael Jackson Evaluated Dear Editor: First Michael was a very talented individual, but as we know from the replaying of his songs all day, that his success was two decades ago, he was on the skids, past his prime yet hoping to make a comeback. There are performers such as Elton John and Bernie Taupin who have had decades long success. We also know of the demands placed upon a young child far too soon that left him stunted emotionally, and frozen in time as a young boy. It is no small wonder then that he found it acceptable to sleep in the same bed with young boys while he was a physically grown adult male. It is also no small wonder that much of his pleasures were child like in nature. Sadly, like most celebrities, he was coddled instead of having his problems addressed. What did Diana Ross, Liz Taylor, Jesse Jackson do to confront their friend? Others chose to feed off of Michael as is the case surrounding celebrities. Finally his learned behavior to be very competitive, which led him at one time, in frustration, to

call racist the very record industry that rejoiced in his prior success when his last effort failed, was a contributing factor to his early exit from this earth, pushing himself while in frail health. In the end, all the celebrity in the world could not save this young man child and probably should be credited for his demise. David DiBello Astoria NY 11105

Let’s be Honest About the State’s Budget Crisis Dear Editor: Last week thousands of individuals rallied for a fair and responsible solution to address the state’s budget woes. Many were misled to believe state government couldn’t find revenues necessary to fund critical areas; however, the sad reality is that politics based on fear and not fiscal responsibility were the source of mass hysteria. Amidst the rhetoric and horror over doomsday budgets and draconian cuts, I’d like to remind people that before the Senate adjourned we passed a revenue package that would help Illinois achieve a balanced budget. BEYOND THE RHETORIC

Black Business Success Can Hurt By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist It can be quite comical at times when you see public relations splashes about perceived successful entrepreneurs. Ninety percent of these so called tycoons are fakes. The fact is most successful Black businesses are rather “stealth”. The modesty comes from many examples of attacks, conspiracies

Harry C. Alford

and mountains of adversity put before them and others simply because they are Black. Most successful Black entrepreneurs that I know would never publish themselves in the so called Black Enter-

prise Top 100 Black Businesses. To many it is perceived as a “target list” for the IRS, large competitors and others with bad intentions. Allow me to discuss a few of the horror stories that successful Black entrepreneurs have experienced. Lannie H. Smith started L.H. Smith Oil Co. and built up a big customer base of Indiana corporations and government entities. He supplied them with fuel oil. His biggest contract was with Ft. Knox, Kentucky, the home of the U.S. Army tank school. Traditionally, you had to deliver the goods on time or face a fine for lateness. In this case, if any of his trucks were late his company would be assessed a fine of $1,000 per hour or part thereof. His enemies knew this so when each truck left Indianapolis for Ft. Knox it would be stopped by an Indiana state trooper and detained for hours. After the harassment, the trooper would release the truck and as soon as it crossed the Ohio River Bridge a Kentucky state trooper was waiting to do the same. This harassment was taking all the profit out of the deliveries and building bad relations with an important customer. It’s hard to fight something that is being sanc-

tioned by the highest office in the state (Governor and State Police). Robert Batteast and his son built a thriving construction company in South Bend, Ind. They did most of their business in Chicago and with the federal government (SBA 8a program) as the state of Indiana had them blocked from any good work. Through the request of Indiana white contractors the Army Corps of Engineers decided to break this company. Batteast was assigned the building of an Army barracks at Ft. Benning, Ga. It was considered an “emergency” job which caused all of the approvals and notices to proceed to be verbal. It was a set up. As Batteast Construction was finishing the barracks, the Corps claimed the foundation was not to specification and the whole project should be demolished and restarted and there would be no payment. Batteast, of course, formally challenged that and a third party architect was to come in and offer a professional opinion. Before the architect arrived to the scene, the Corps of Engineers took a giant D7 tractor and leveled the $3 million structure. Batteast had to sue to recover his

money and it took 9 years to win his case. He was awarded triple damages, $9 million but the federal government told him to accept only the principal $3 million or they would appeal the whole thing for the next 20 – 30 years. He had no choice. His company barely survived that 9 year period of litigation. Sometimes these horrors will get worse than business disruption. Mayors Harold Washington, Coleman Young and Carl Stokes of Chicago, Detroit and Cleveland respectively decided to recognize Black construction talent and share it with each other. All of a sudden Black construction management companies during the 1980’s started to grow in these cities. The fastest rising star was Madison Construction Management. This flamboyant architect and engineering magnate was rolling in Cleveland and especially in Chicago. When he was awarded the prestigious expansion of the Detroit Metro Airport through the blessing of Mayor Young, the powers that be decided to send a message. Within two weeks of winning the huge Detroit gig, Mr. Madison was assassinated in his car (two bullets to the back of his head).

The next two most successful construction management firms in Chicago met a similar fate within the next 5 months. One entrepreneur died when his private plane fell out of the sky. The other entrepreneur fell “asleep” in his garage with the car still running. The Black business community was terrified. In fact, no homegrown successful construction management firms in Chicago and Detroit have risen since. I know hundreds of such stories. One day I will have to chronicle it in a book. It is just a shame to see hard work and success attacked simply because of the color of one’s skin. To see a catfish farmer get his ponds poisoned with toxic mercury; companies getting their valuable equipment stolen; unwarranted union strikes; merciless IRS audits and harassments; false fraud charges and it goes on and on. For every successful Black business that hasn’t been “hit” there are five more that have. STILL WE RISE! Alford is the President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce, Inc. Testing is Key to Curbing AIDS Among Blacks By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist Blacks are more likely than other racial and ethnic groups to have been tested for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, but will need to be examined at much higher rates in order to curb the devestation the epidemic is having on AfricanAmericans. That’s the conclusion of a new report by the Black AIDS Institute titled, “Passing the Test: The Challenges and Opportunities of HIV Testing in Black America.” The report was made public last week to coincide with National HIV Testing Day (June 27). However, while special observances such as National HIV Testing Day and World AIDS Day (December 1) are used to rally the public, attention on HIV/AIDS needs to be maintained throughout the year. Although African-Americans represent only 12 percent of the U.S. population, we accounted for nearly half of all AIDS cases diagnosed in 2006. Black women represented 66 percent of all new AIDS cases among women. Although Blacks 13-19 years old are only The Chicago Crusader

16 percent of U.S. teenagers, they account for 69 percent of new AIDS cases. Among men infected, 46 percent were AfricanAmericans. More than half of AfricanAmericans know of a friend or relative who is HIV positive or suffering from AIDS. A Kaiser Family Foundation survey found that 38 percent of African-Americans have experienced a relative suffering from the virus and 20 percent of Blacks had an acquaintance or co-worker infected with HIV/AIDS. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 52 percent of Black Americans 18 or older reported being tested for HIV at least once in his or her life, compared to 38 percent of Latinos and 34 percent of Whites. Still, that’s not good enough. “Blacks actually need to be tested at much higher rates to ensure prompt diagnosis,” the Black AIDS Institute report noted. “Nationwide, well over 100,000 Black Americans are currently unaware that they are living with HIV. In Washington, D.C., nearly half of all Blacks surveyed said they had never taken the test. In a multi-city survey of young gay and bisexual men, two-thirds of

George E. Curry Black men who tested HIV-positive had previously been unaware they were infected.” A major problem is that health care providers place a disproportinate emphasis on high-risk groups such as gay or bisexual men and drug users while failing to recognize that the virus has permeated all sectors of Black America. For example, one study in South Carolina, where African-Americans make up three-fourths of all people living with HIV, found that if efforts were concentrated only on highrisk groups, 79 percent of those with HIV would go undetected. Not only must the entire Black community be targeted, the key is to test everyone earlier.

BLACKS MUST CONTROL THEIR OWN COMMUNITY

Phill Wilson, CEO of the Black AIDS Institute, stated: “People who are diagnosed late in the course of HIV infection have a much poorer prognosis than individuals whose HIV diagnosis is timelier. In New York City, individuals whose HIV and AIDS diagnoses occur within 31 days of one another are twice as likely to die within four months of diagnosis as people with a non-concurrent AIDS diagnosis.” In order to combat HIV/AIDS, we must know when and how the virus is attacking African-Americans. Among Black men, 63 percent are infected through maleto-male sex, 20 percent through heterosexual sex, 12 percent by drug injections, and 4 percent through a combination of drug use and having sex with other men. The pattern is different for Black women, with 80 percent becoming infected through heterosexual activity and 20 percent through drug use. The Black AIDS Institute report cited four major reasons the epidemic has not been halted in Black America: • The stigma associated with being HIV positive; • The failure of many physicians Saturday, July 4, 2009

to include HIV screening as part of routine medical exams; • A requirement by some states that a person must provide written consent before being tested for the virus and • The failure to increase testing rates though effective marketing efforts. Among the report’s recommendations: • The establishment of community-based testing coalitions; • Having African-Americans discuss HIV/AIDS more openly; • Seeing national leaders include HIV/AIDS are part of their priorities; • Development of a national AIDS strategy; • Congressional passage of the Routine HIV/AIDS Screening Coverage Act, the Stop AIDS in Prison Act and the National Black Clergy for the Elimination of HIV/AIDS Act; • Providing adequate treatment for people who are HIV positive; • Instituting an ant-stigma campaign and • Having insurers reimburse (Continued on page 14) 5

THE CRISIS OF THE NEGRO INTELLECTUAL REVISITED ( D r . C o nr a d W o r r i l l i s t h e National Chairman of the Nat i o n a l B l a c k U n i t e d F r o nt ( N B U F ) l o c a t e d a t 1 8 0 9 E a st 71st Str eet, Chicago, Illinois, 6 0 6 4 9 , 7 7 3 - 4 9 3 - 0 9 0 0 , Fa x # 7 7 3 - 4 9 3 - 9 8 1 9 , E - m a i l : n b u fchic@sbcglo bal.net, Web site: nbufront.org) One of our great ancestors, Harold Cruse wrote a book, The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual which was published in 1967, at the height of the Black

Dr. Conrad Worrill Power Movement. This insightful book stirred up a spirited conversation in the African Liberation Movement. That conversation revolves around the weaknesses of our movement, the direction of our movement, and inability of some of the leaders and thinkers of our movement to understand what Brother Cruse calls “The Great American Ideal.” This problem continues to linger with us today. Brother Cruse spent most of his activist and organizing days in Harlem, New York from the 1940s until he accepted a professorship at the University of Michigan and helped develop their Black Studies Program in 1967. In Harlem, Brother Cruse was an active participant in most of the major organizing activities that swept through New York for over twenty years. The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual is a summation of those experiences as it related to the literature and history of the African Liberation Movement. This year, 2009 marks the forty-second year of the publication of The Crisis of the Ne6

gro Intellectual. Its importance to our movement has still not received the attention it deserves, primarily because Brother Cruse was so honest in his criticisms of our movement and many of its well-known leaders. Therefore, the book was blocked in many circles from receiving the kind of legitimacy its substance deserved. However, a small group of scholar/activists have discussed and debated Brother Cruse’s ideas during this forty-two year period and have organized study groups form time to time that have aided in understanding the ideas that Cruse presents in his book. When we use the term intellectual we are talking about people who struggle around ideas— writers, poets, scholars, researchers, teachers, students, and activists. Intellectuals are people who grapple with ideas and who function in the cultural, political, educational, and economic domains of the society. As Dr. Anderson Thompson always says, “Ideas are weapons of war.” With this definition, let us review briefly some of the ideas and concepts that Brother Cruse presented in The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual. One of the major points Cruse makes is the African American intellectuals are pathological in their approach to the choices available to them. It is Cruse’s observation that they appear to adopt the values of the dominant group, which he describes as the white Anglo Saxon Protestant. It was in the first chapter of The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual that Cruse raised this question of the problem of identity of the African in America people. The question of our identity still remains a fundamental problem with the African in America Community today. There is a tendency in the African in America Community to identify with, emulate, and support other races and ethnic groups at the expense of our own race. Cruse illustrated this in his book when he described the following: “In 1940, as one of my first acts in the pursuit of becoming a more social being, I

Saturday, July 4, 2009

joined a YMCA amateur drama group in Harlem. I wanted to learn about theater so I became a stage technician— meaning a handyman for all backstage chores. But the first thing about this drama group that struck me as highly curious was the fact that all the members were overwhelmingly in favor of doing white plays with Negro casts.” Cruse continued on this point. “I wondered why and very naively expressed my sentiments about it. The replies that I got clearly indicated these amateur actors were not very favorable to the play about Negro life, although they would not plainly say so. Despite the fact that this question of identity was first presented to me within the context of the program of a small, insignificant amateur drama group, its implications ranged far beyond.” Another problem Cruse addresses is that the African in America intellectual’s conceptualization of our condition is not based on the ethnic reality of America. The American Ideal espouses one set of principles through the Constitution, but the basis of reality of this society is founded on ethnic and religious pluralism not individualism, according to Brother Cruse. From the point of view of Brother Cruse, the African in America intellectual is not accepted by whites and does not identify with their own racial group. Cruse concludes that the crisis of the African in America intellectual is an identity crisis and misunderstanding of the false postulation of the American Ideal. For Brother Cruse, the crisis was whether the African in America intellectual will accept the challenge of being the spokesman or spokeswoman of the African in America masses in terms of setting guidelines for our movement and of understanding the issues of our race, making proper analyses, and proceeding to help build our movement. This is still the crisis we face today.

If you don’t realize when and where you are in history today, right now know that you are living in the age of “OBAMA”, the first Black man elected to the office of President of the United States of America. Sought after by all who have met him he is known to be the man of the hour. The very hour in which you are living is his time. Most of us have lived in the promises of the last century. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Jack Kennedy and Bobby Kennedy men slain while J. Edgar Hoover stood at the helm of agency sanctioned to guard against terrorist acts against U.S. citizens. The evil ones caused a man of God to enter martyrdom, a man who lived to die by the very words that made him great and caused him to loose his life. One man was destroyed on a sunny Fall Texas day when his killer lay in await in the bushes armed with the hate of those who fell left of center of the American Dream. And the depth of the hate that fed the food that pulled the trigger of a the gun that brought death to the man who spoke the truth of the days what would come when little Black boys and girls would come together with the rest of the citizenry of the United States of America—the land of the free. He said aloud that he, like Moses, would not come into the

promised land. Each of us has a history that we have lived in and participated in the current day in which we live. Yet, there are those who slither into the night like the cowards they are and who take the lives of little Black children who are the innocent and are guilty of nothing except a desire to live to enjoy to pleasures life has to offer. Living in a world where the beast cares not…as the beast is aware that the devil will arrive. I remember the night when one was slain by many who feared a few—a few who sought out justice. I heard the first shot of the death march. More next week. God bless America and her future generations.

CELEBRITY HEAVEN

Michael Jackson

What a week. Celebrities were marching into glory wholesale last week . . . Ed McMahon, Farah Fawcett, Michael Jackson, Billy Mays . . . CNN, MSNBC, NBC, ABC, CBS, et al were broadcasting almost non-stop about Michael Jackson, while lit-

felled down so hard laughing about the mother being known as NONE, that I had to go see my “Knuckle Cracker, known as Chiropractor in some circles. He told me to stop laughing and I would be fine. But I can’t help it,

Farah Fawcett tle coverage was given to the other stars. They were unfortunate enough to die the same week as

y’all. The next big mystery will be finding out which WILL is the right one. Unfortunately, by the time they figure it out, two or three years from now, the lawyers will be rich and the estate to benefit the chil’ren will be dwindling. All ears are perched to get the autopsy results. What was the cause of death? Most folks say it was the drugs, they just don’t know which drug or drugs. What Ima found was interesting is the nurse and other friends that knew about his dependence on drugs, but were enablers or told him to get help but did not insist on him getting help. Of course, Michael at 50 was truly a grown man, and he made his own decisions. Deciding who will take care of the chil’ren is going to be a big debate, if not fight. It seems as

Joe Jackson though Michael would want his mother to care for the children since they had such a deep bond between themselves, but mother is almost 80 years old. Another consideration will be the Nanny that had a close relationship with the children too. So, I guess Ima

Folks are talking about Joe Jackson’s performance at the BET Awards over the weekend. Ima, as straight forward and often tasteless in the way she does things, thought Joe should have been horse whipped when he took the opportunity to promote a new record company he is starting with Marshall Thompson from the Chi-Lites. He hardly looked like the grieving father, although Ima concedes everyone may grieve in a different way, but all Ima can remember is the awful relationship he had with this

This is personal. My mother was the cornerstone of our family. When she was diagnosed with colon cancer, it was like the whole family got cancer. She died when she was only 56. Let my heartbreak be your wake-up call. Terrence Howard, actor/musician

Ed McMahon Michael. Vying for the spotlight we found out, is not only for living stars, but also dead stars. -ImaMICHAEL MYSTERIES While they brought up some of the negative stories of Michael, most of the coverage was about his contributions to music and entertainment. The big mystery is who are the parents of the three children Michael called his own. While Deborah Rowe was said to be the mother of the first two children, a document proclaimed the mother of the third one as NONE. Now in our neighborhood the father is often not known, but what a twist when the mother is unknown. Ima The Chicago Crusader

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the U.S., but it is largely preventable. If you’re 50 or older, please get screened. Screening finds precancerous polyps, so they can be removed before they turn into cancer. And screening finds colorectal cancer early, when treatment works best. If you’re at increased risk— if you have a personal or family history of polyps or colorectal cancer, or you have inflammatory bowel disease— ask your doctor when to start screening. Screening saves lives.

When business interests are closely owned, in a partnership, LLC or corporation, it’s wise to arrange as early as possible how to separate those interests. The usual way is a buy-sell agreement.

*** If one of the co-owners dies, retires, becomes disabled or just leaves the company, the agreement allows the other to retain control of the business. It also provides a bona fide valuation. *** Most usual is a cross-purchase arrangement: one owner must buy the ownership interest of the one who departs. This is usually funded with life insurance. *** Key: The private corporation should avoid owning the insurance policy. Insurance benefits paid to a C corporation can be taxable—and subject to claims of the corporation’s creditors.

Oprah’s Foundation donates $250,000 to Urban Prep Urban Prep Academies, which operates the country’s first allboys charter public high school, announced recently a $250,000 donation from The Oprah Winfrey Foundation. The donation will be used to support ongoing programming at the Urban Prep Charter Academy for Young Men—Englewood Campus. The Oprah Winfrey Foundation donation will activate a twofor-one match from a $1 million anonymous challenge donation Urban Prep received in 2008. All donations made to Urban Prep will have triple the impact thanks to the Oprah Winfrey Foundation donation. “This gift is amazing! We are so grateful to Oprah Winfrey and her Foundation for this generous donation and we applaud her commitment to increasing access to quality education,” said Tim King, founder and CEO, Urban Prep Academies. “The young men of Urban Prep are committed to their education, and our faculty and staff are committed to their success. The high-school drop-out rate for Black boys in Chicago is more than 60 percent. To combat statistics like that, we have to expand the educational and extracurricular opportunities available to students. The Oprah Winfrey Foundation’s gift helps us do just that. A donation from someone as passionate about education and young people as Oprah Winfrey is all the more

meaningful.” Each year, Urban Prep students participate in myriad programs and activities that enhance their high school experience, support their college readiness, and contribute to their growth as wellrounded individuals. Among the programs and initiatives The Oprah Winfrey Foundation contribution will support its “Study UP!”, Urban Prep’s summer program that provides students the opportunity to participate in national and international summer college programs. Urban Prep students are committed to achieving success. Even though only four percent of students in the Class of 2010 came to Urban Prep reading at or above grade level, after just two years at Urban Prep, 79 percent of them are on track to graduate. This compares to only 34 percent of students attending neighborhood public schools. “Education is the key to young people achieving their fullest potential,” said Letty Tanchum, interim executive director for The Oprah Winfrey Foundation. “We are pleased to support Urban Prep in its efforts to improve the quality of education available to young men in the City of Chicago. We’re impressed with the significant accomplishments of Urban Prep students and the dedication of the school’s faculty and staff. Continued support of these programs will ensure that

The gala was part of the 38th Annual Conference of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition and the Citizen Education Fund. The scholarships are part of PUSH Excel’s Bennett Excel Scholars program, which assists students who are committed to academic excellence, public service and civic advocacy. The program is designed to provide students at the college in Greensboro, N.C., with opportunities to develop leadership and advocacy skills and to support their academic endeavors. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is nearly two and one-half hours of cars turning into machines, helping humans figure out how to save the planet from other machines. And I know this will prove to be a summer hit, and director Michael Bay is to be commended for squeezing much into a movie that’s based on an action hero and keeping audience members entertained throughout the entire film. That being said, however much it took to bring this sequel to the big screen was well worth the funding. And even though I don’t remember seeing the first movie, Transformers, the plot was easy enough to follow. The main character, Sam, played by Shia LaBeouf, continues the saga of the Transformers tale, as a college freshman, whose first day doesn’t go as well as he or his parents have planned. The robots are disguised as the good guys Autobots and the not so good guys are called Decepticons. Sam has been enlisted in the previous movie by the main

Featured at the centenary gala on Saturday, September 26, the new work will open the Unity Temple Concert Series on Sunday, September 27. The piece is for baritone, oboe and string quartet and gets its title from a poem of the same name by Mark Strand. The six movement work features additional poems by Shakespeare and John Ashbery. Mr. Conlon, who will conduct, created the series in 2005 to build upon his efforts at Los Angeles Opera to raise public consciousness to the significance of the lesser-known works of two generations of composers who were suppressed, forced to emigrate or executed during the Third Reich. The concert is Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at 8 p.m. in the Martin Theatre. CCM then opens its 23rd subscription season on September 13 and 14 with a celebration of chamber music for piano, including Tchaikovsky’s masterwork Trio in A Minor, Op. 50 for violin, cello and piano, Hindemith’s Sonata for Horn and Piano in F Major and Beethoven’s Trio for clarinet, cello and piano in B-Flat Major, Op. 11. Chicago pets to receive constant, compassionate care AETC first to provide 24-hour Emergency and Specialty Services in the city Chicago has approximately 1.6 million pets according to the American Veterinarian Medical Association Calculator and beginning in September they will have access to 24-hour emergency medical attention – and ongoing hospitalization – should they fall victim to accident or illness. Animal Emergency & Treatment Center (AETC) will open a new location at 3927 W. Belmont – becoming the only veterinary emergency and specialty center in the city to offer care at any hour of the day or night, 365 days a year. “Today’s pet owners expect a high level of care and service when their companion pet is sick or hurt,” said Dr. Matt H. Tompkins, DVM, co-founder and managing partner of AETC. “We identified a desperate need

for high-quality, round-the-clock treatment for pets in Chicago. Until now, city dwellers have not had the option of 24-hour care for their pets, but instead have had to transport their sick animals from after-hours emergency facilities to their regular veterinarians’ offices every morning. AETC provides ongoing hospitalization, which allows pets to receive uninterrupted treatment from the same skilled medical team.” Spanning more than 10,000 square feet, the new AETC Chicago broke ground on June 1. It joins AETC’s existing facility in Grayslake, Ill., which has served the Lake County area since 1994. Offering the latest and best medical technologies and diagnostic options, AETC board-certified veterinarians will provide such specialty services as surgery, internal medicine and critical care. Other services will include video endoscopy, video ultrasound, digital radiology and computed

CONSTRUCTION HAS BEGUN on the Animal Emergency and Treatment Center (AETC). The facility will offer 24-hour medical services to pet owners. There will be a blood bank on site for blood donors to donate blood for use in transfusion and surgeries for other animals.

In addition, AETC Chicago will house a robust blood donor program, through which any client may volunteer to have his or her pet screened to become a “Donor Hero” and give blood every eight to 10 weeks. Program participants benefit by earning credit toward AETC services and by helping to save the lives of animals treated at AETC and other local veterinary centers. AETC’s blood bank is unique to the Chicago area in that it provides blood products to veterinary facilities throughout the entire region. AETC Chicago will be staffed by a team of more than 50 dedicated veterinary professionals, many of whom are board-certified and residency-trained in the areas of surgery, critical care, internal medicine and emergency

medicine. In addition, AETC nurses are highly-skilled and average more than 10 years of experience. Each member of AETC Chicago team will contribute to the creation of customized treatment plans that meet the individual needs of every patient, client and primary referring veterinarian. “We are proud to offer the cutting-edge diagnostic and medical procedures of a large-sized animal care facility coupled with the personalized, compassionate care of our tight-knit team,” said Tompkins. “Our staff provides treatment to each animal as if it were our own. We are passionate about caring for both pets and their owners – and we’re excited to bring our unique brand of animal medical services to Chicago residents.”

Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Illinois honors ACCESS in eight vital areas Health Network (ACCESS) the highest rating for colorectal cancer screening among its network of independent practice associations. Along with this latest milestone in colorectal cancer screening, ACCESS had previously earned seven additional Blue Stars in vital areas that gravely affect community members. The additional stars were awarded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois—based on its latest quality audits—in the areas of diabetes, asthma care, childhood immunizations, blood pressure control, cardiovascular management, breast cancer screening and mental health follow-up. ACCESS, which is the nation’s largest network of community health centers with 51 locations throughout the Chicagoland area, is committed to creating a “medical home” that offers seamless continuity of care for its patients. “We are pleased that communities and families will see these results as they make decisions about where they go for health care,” said Jeni Fabian, Director of Quality and Performance Improvement.

“We are committed to continually improving the quality of care that we provide to patients and to holding ourselves to the highest standards of the industry.” The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois Blue Stars provide evidence of why ACCESS is the ambulatory provider of choice in communities it serves in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. “The Blue Stars recognize the quality work that we have done for our Blue Cross and Blue Shield patients,” said Deputy Medical Officer Hugo Alvarez, M.D. “But we provide the same quality of care for all of our patients, whether they are Blue Cross and Blue Shield, or from other HMOs or insurance companies, or whether they are uninsured. We provide the same level of care for everyone—that’s our mission and that’s the true mission of medicine and health care.” Access Community Health Network is comprised of 51 Joint Commission-accredited community health centers throughout Chicago and surrounding suburbs.

The celebratory day included a supportive atmosphere amongst other survivors and featured a spiritual liturgy, a complimentary breakfast and a motivational presentation by Joan Murphy, R.N., Ph.D., Director of Community Health and the Health Education Centers at the Hospital. “More than 10 million cancer survivors live across our nation today,” said Beth Vaclavik, Manager of Little Company of Mary’s Cancer Center. “Thanks to our advanced tools, such as our digi-

tal mammography unit and our one-day breast cancer treatment trial, our Cancer Center remains in the top 27 percent of the nation’s cancer programs accredited by the American College of Surgeon’s Commission on Cancer. I am so pleased to see hundreds of survivors and many familiar faces that can celebrate with us today.” Following the liturgy and brunch, keynote speaker, Joan Murphy, entertained the crowd with her lecture titled “Dancing with Life.” Through the use of anecdotes intertwined with humor, Joan encouraged survivors to embrace a positive future with a smile. Joan turned a serious topic into one that stimulated immense laughter throughout the crowd. Attendees were able to com-
