Burr Oak Cemetery owner emerges Receiver appointed - Regulatory legislation in the works By J. Coyden Palmer A week after Cook County Sheriff deputies discovered discarded human remains scattered about the property of Burr Oak Cemetery in south suburban Alsip relatives of those buried there, along with county and state leaders are still searching for answers. Authorities say at least 300 graves were disturbed in an elaborate plot by four workers in which they profited hundreds of thousands of dollars by digging up bodies and reselling the plots. State leaders are calling for regulation of the industry while a lawsuit filed by Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart is asking for the court to revoke the license of Burr Oak owners, Perpetua Inc. Owner located breaks silence The owner of the cemetery, Melvin Bryant, has come forward to make his first public statements on the situation. Criti-
cized by many, including Dart, Bryant said he had nothing to do with the scheme and said he was the one who called authorities when it was brought to his attention that something criminal was possibly happening at Burr Oak. Dressed in a white dress shirt and dress pants, Bryant said he too is a victim; a victim of dishonest employees who stole money from the business and he has relatives buried at Burr Oak as well. He called what has happened “despicable and deplorable.” But Bryant’s actions aren’t helping victims or Sheriff Dart. “Where in the hell has he been?” asked an angry Victoria Shelton, who has two cousins buried at Burr Oak and still doesn’t know where their graves are. “He should have been here last week when hundreds of people were here asking questions. Instead he was in Texas somewhere faxing statements to the press. Now that I think about it though, maybe it’s best he wasn’t here be(Continued on page 3)

When Daddy’s Little Girl is HIV Positive By George E. Curry NNPA Special Correspondent WASHINGTON (NNPA) – After Bobby R. Henry, Sr. and his 18-year-old daughter, Yolonda, had discussed her plans
to join the Air Force, he was surprised to learn that she had changed her plans and even more surprised by why she had changed them. “She called me on the phone and she said, ‘Daddy, I got something to tell you,’”
Henry recounted. “And I said, ‘What is it? I know you told me you were going into the Air Force. What is it?’ And she said, ‘I got a letter from the Air Force and it was from the medical people and they told me I need to get checked again because I’m showing that I am HIV positive.’”
Placing that call 18 years ago from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. to her father in Dayton, Ohio was one of the hardest things Yolonda had to do in her young life. Today, it is difficult for Henry, publisher of the Westside Gazette in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., to dis(Continued on page 2)

National Urban League preparing for national convention By J. Coyden Palmer It has been 30 years since the National Urban League held its annual conference in Chicago. President Marc Morial said that is too long and is looking forward to the event taking place July 29August 1 at the McCormick

Place Convention Center. In addition to plenary sessions for a variety of genres, the convention presents a great opportunity for networking. The theme of this year’s conference is “The Path to Power” and convention organizers have extended an invitation to President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama. Morial said this year’s conference will be much different than the last one held in Chicago since much in the world has changed. African Americans have made much progress over the last 30 years but there are new challenges facing the community, especially during these tough economic times. “We have to find ways to get
community.” Chicago is the 3rd largest city and media market in the country and the 2nd largest consumer market for African Americans. The recent election of President Obama and the city’s history of Civil Rights leadership made it an attractive place to hold the conference, according to Morial. The former Mayor of New Orleans, Morial said right now the nation is hurting as jobs are dwindling and the economic slide is affecting Blacks more than others. With a nationwide unemployment rate over 10 percent, he said African Americans must continue to network or create new avenues for themselves to make ends
meet. He is hoping the career fair that will also take place at the conference can open doors for some people. “The career fair will provide a unique environment for recruiting diverse talent in a range of professions,” he said. “Additionally, the exhibit showcase will allow for greater brand exposure to a loyal consumer group whose spending power recently surpassed seven billion dollars.” More than 6,000 people are expected to attend the three and a half day event. In addition to business opportunities there will also be a health fair that will provide free screening for diseases
that effect the African American community at a staggering rate like diabetes, HIV and high blood pressure. “This conference is going to be about serious business because these are serious times,” Morial said. “We’re going to talk about how we can fix the housing market and how entrepreneurs can take advantage of the new digital and green economy that is being pushed by the Obama administration.” Established in 1916, the Chicago Urban League is a civil rights organization that empowers and inspires individuals to reach and exceed their economic potential.
The Chicago Urban League supports and advocates for economic, educational and social progress for African-Americans through an agenda focused exclusively on economic empowerment as the key driver for social change. Chicago Urban League President Cheryle Jackson recently formed an exploratory committee in regards to the U.S. Senate seat currently being held by Roland Burris, who announced last week he is not seeking re-election. Jackson has remained quiet regarding her plans, but many believe if she can raise the money for a campaign, she will be a candidate.
SURROUNDED BY ELECTED officials and community leaders, Governor Pat Quinn signed into law bills that create the $31 billion Illinois Jobs Now! plan. The plan will create and retain over 439,000 jobs over the next six years, according to the Governor. Behind the Governor as he signed the bill from left to right are Representative David Miller, Illinoi s Public Health Director Damon Arnold , A lderman Ed Sm ith, State Represe nta ti ve Cy nthi a Soto and Sta te Representative Toni Berrios.

This was my little girl…” Henry’s incomplete sentence dissolved into 20 seconds of agonizing silence, with tears streaming down his cheeks. When a reporter gently surmised that it must have been a difficult conversation, Henry replied, “Especially when you weren’t there.” He added, “You question yourself. If you were there, could you have made a difference?” Henry, who was divorced from Yolonda’s mother and remarried, knows intellectually that even if he had been in the same city as his daughter, it probably would not have changed the outcome. Emotionally, he remains wracked by guilt and pain. “If you sit and really think about it – which I have – some2

She did that, searching for love in all the wrong places. “The final straw came for her when she got busted with some pills, some prescription pills. She said, ‘Oh, that’s my daddy. I didn’t know he was here.’ So I came up to the podium where she was – we hugged and kissed. “She always said that her family didn’t treat her differently,” said Henry, still trying to regain his composure. “So, right then, I decided that wherever she spoke, I (Continued on page 16) The Chicago Crusader

Deadline passes; city prepares pink slips for 400 union workers By J. Coyden Palmer At Crusader press time, the fate of over 400 city workers remained in the hands of their union, according to Mayor Daley. This comes as a July 15th midnight deadline required the workers’ union to agree to 14 furlough days and some other concessions in order for the workers to keep their jobs. Daley blamed the American Federation of State County Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and Teamsters Union during a press conference at City Hall Wednesday morning for the layoffs. He said taxpayers are hurting now and if large corporations like NASA, U.S. Air and Boeing can make layoffs, the city can too. Daley gave a 5 p.m. final deadline for union representatives to work out a deal with the city or the pink slips that were passed out earlier in the day would stand. Daley said other city workers, himself included, have already agreed to the furlough days. He also wants city employees to accept comp time instead of pay when they work overtime. The layoffs would affect workers in nearly 30 departments, 120 of which work in public libraries. “I hope they will understand
that we weren’t asking them to make financial concessions unless we were willing to do it first,” Daley said. “My staff and I, along with other top commissioners at City Hall along with 3,700 nonunion employees are taking 15 unpaid furlough days this year. For those employees who have already received notices, their last day of employment will be today at 5 p.m.” Daley was hopeful the shocking reality that the city is standing firm in its decision to cut jobs will prompt workers to tell their unions to strike a deal. It’s a dangerous game of chicken being played by the union, which is holding the fate of its members. But AFSCME local union 31 said it disagrees with the Mayor’s assessment of the city’s financial problems. The union believes the goal of cutting costs doesn’t mean cutting jobs and that streamlining the city’s budget would be a better idea. “The choice the Mayor made today is the wrong choice for the City of Chicago,” read a press release by AFSCME. Henry Bayer is the leader of AFSCME Council 31. He accused the Mayor of not negotiating in good faith. He said he sent Daley a letter with an alternative plan
that would give the city the savings it is seeking and lessening the financial blow his members would have to face.
“We do not want to see a single one of our members laid off,” Bayer said. “There is no excuse for the Mayor to proceed with these
layoffs when he could achieve the same savings without them.” Bayer’s plan has not been re(Continued on page 16)

cause he might have gotten hurt.” Dart added that Bryant hasn’t been involved in the process of running the cemetery since the story broke. He said employees didn’t even know who he was or how to find him. He also said running cemeteries isn’t in his job description and that he feels awful telling the few remaining workers when they can take breaks and leave for the day. “I don’t think I need to send a three-part letter to [the owners] explaining that they need to send someone to manage the cemetery,” he said. “They know the address.” According to the Attorney General’s Office Judge Stuart Palmer in the Circuit Court of Cook County approved the appointment of Roman Szabekski as a receiver to oversee all of the operations at the Burr Oak Cemetery. This is a very significant step towards beginning the healing process for the thousands of families with loved ones at Burr Oak. Mr. Szabelski will have broad authority to take possession and control of operations at the cemetery to work cooperatively with the Comptroller’s office and all law enforcement agencies. taken against the cemetery owners. State Comptroller Dan Hynes and Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan on July 14th sued Perpetua, accusing it of consumer fraud and violations of multiple laws related to the funeral and burial industry. The complaint seeks to stop Perpetua Holdings from accepting any further money for operation of the cemetery. In the three-page complaint they also accuse the business of sloppy record keeping, which was further pointed out by Dart later in the day when he showed the press an old file cabinet. The cabinet contained old, molded index cards, many stuck together and unreadable after years of neglect that were confiscated as evidence from the property. Madigan said the record keeping problem alone is a violation of three state laws. Plaintiffs Roshanda Washington Jones, Jeremy Washington, Jarvis L. Washington and Renia Washington have three relatives buried at Burr Oak and they were the first to file a lawsuit, which is expected to become part of class-action suit. They are suing for more than $30,000 in damages for intentional infliction of emotional distress. “The knowledge of this desecration creates great distress to the relatives such that no reasonable human being should be expected to
bear it,” the lawsuit states.
Lawmakers take action An item not previously on their agenda as they try to solve the state’s budget crisis, lawmakers in Springfield, led by a coalition of Black legislators is seeking tighter reigns on cemeteries. The suspects Because of what he termed a “safety issue” Dart said the four defendants Carolyn Towns, Maurice Dailey and brothers Keith and Terrance Nicks had to be moved to a segregated part of the jail. Sources inside the jail told Crusader the suspects were getting death threats from other inmates, but Dart wouldn’t confirm that. Towns was transferred to the mental health portion of the jail for undisclosed reasons. Each suspect has been

charged with one count of dismembering a human body, a felony. More charges are expected to be filed. Neighbors of the Nicks brothers didn’t want to be identified but said they come from a very good family—people character. The neighbors are shocked to learn that the brothers would be involved in something like this. They say the brothers never posed any problems and seemed like good sons. “This is just tearing their family apart,” said one neighbor who has known the family for years but didn’t want to be identified. “I feel so sorry for them. In just speaking to them you can feel the embarrassment and humiliation they are suffering. In all honesty I think they are about ready to disown them.” Carolyn Towns was the alleged ringleader and mastermind, according to Dart. She and she alone had access to the burial records. Authorities believe she would tell the other members of the crew when and where to dig up a body and then place another one in that plot. BURIED SECRETS Just when you think things couldn’t get worse, you get a surprise from the proverbial left field. A huge scandal has surfaced at Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip, Illinois. Hundreds of bodies have been dug up and dumped into mass graves, while the old graves have been re-sold as new plots. Once upon a time, the Burr Oak Cemetery was the only cemetery in the Chicago area that allowed Black burials. Fast forward to now and we find the living being “stiffed” by cemetery personnel. And to add insult to injury, the scam was being perpetrated by Black people! Unfortunately, several years ago there was another scandal involving malfeasance at a cemetery and the perpetrators in that case were Black as well. Who needs enemies when your own kind does you in? These unfortunate instances bring to light a very salient truth: corruption is not owned by any race – the hands of greed extend far beyond ethnic origins into the very heart and soul of a very diverse humanity. The fact that the suspects in this case are Black has elicited strange responses from some African Americans. At least one individual on a call-in radio talk show wanted to shoot the messenger, Sheriff Tom Dart, who he accused of playing politics. In other words, the only reason Dart is helping to reveal this situation, according to the caller, is to advance his political career. The question we might ask is “Can you think of any politician who doesn’t want career advancement?” Whatever Dart’s motives turn out to be, he has uncovered a very rotten truth, one that needed to be revealed. Hundreds of Black families have had their loved ones, graves desecrated in the name of chasing dollars. Another Black critic is upset because of the notion that a Black cemetery was revealed as corrupt, and that it was targeted for investigation because it is Black. It is thought that there are white cemeteries that are guilty of the same type of malfeasance, but because they’re white-owned, they are not investigated, and, therefore, get away with wrong-doing. All of the previously mentioned notions may have some elements of validity. But the fact remains that Black people have been shafted by other Black people, thereby causing a compound grief on top of the original losses. Old wounds have certainly been re-opened. In light of the foregoing, is there anything that can escape the greasy clutches of monetary greed? Is anything off limits? Is nothing sacred? One thing that can help us rise above the long arm of greed is a rearrangement of our priorities. We must learn to respect each other; we must practice the Golden Rule. The Black perpetrators of the Burr Oak cemetery scandal have succeeded in pumping untold amounts of grief back into their own communities, and this is like the snake that bites its own tail – the harm done will ultimately come back to impact the perpetrators. In the meanwhile, we hope the aggrieved families can find solace in the notion that their loved ones have long departed those bodies captured by the grave, and that, more importantly, memories will keep their loved ones alive forever. 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR AIDING AND ABETTING THE ENEMY Dear Editor: Valley View Swim Club seems to me to give comfort to and aids and abets the enemies of the United States of America. All of this is being done in Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania, a suburb of the “City of Brotherly Love.” At the time when our current president, President Barack Obama, is out of the country trying to repair and rebuild our reputation with the world’s people, Valley View is demonstrating why we are so despised by much of the world. We had our reputation severely damaged during the 8 years of the past Administration, leaving us vulnerable to the wrath of our enemies. The very open and raw display of racial hatred was evidenced when a group of Black and Hispanic children from the Creative Steps Day Camp were denied the use of the swimming pool at the club despite the fact that they had paid $1,950.00, and had a reservation to use the pool. We are supposed to be “the UNITED States of America.” Valley View projects an image that not only are we not united,
but we discriminate based on race and color. The very statement that the Black children would change the “complexion of the club” purportedly stated by some adults in the presence of the children was the basest possible example of man’s inhumanity to man. This is why we have been known by many appellations, “The Ugly American,” “The Crazy American,” “The Arrogant American.” If this is an example and prototype of democracy, why on earth would any country try to embrace it as a better way to govern? There are disruptions, and classic examples of governments in several parts of the world turning on their people, and ostracizing, segregating and even murdering their citizenry. We are being urged by some members of our Congress to get involved and declare extreme condemnation of those governments. In other words, those Congress people want us to continue the practice of meddling in other countries’ affairs. How do we justify that when we don’t guarantee life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness to all of our own citizens, especially our innocent children? Why would anyone want to traumatize and demoralize children? Why would anyone want to break their spirits during their formative years when they, for the

most part, look up to adults as role models to pattern their lives after? Remember Abraham Lincoln told us “that a house divided against itself cannot stand.” We are divided and this poses a security risk. If we are divided, we are then weakened. If we are divided then we are not respected, and thus we are not protected. (Continued on page 6)

BEYOND THE RHETORIC
Storming Indianapolis Public Schools By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist We were beginning to organize sleepy Indianapolis AKA Nap Town. Ministers, local elected officials were realizing their clout and how to translate it to economic empowerment. One day I realized that Indianapolis Public Schools was about to build 12 new schools and this was a great opportunity for 12 construction management contracts along with 12 architec-

ture contracts. Of course, anything big and different will not be easy and a traditional fight was going to be mandatory. We began the struggle. Things were good at the School
Board level in that 4 of the 7 members were Black and all could not have been there without the help of the Black ministers. I went to the Concerned Clergy Association and explained the upcoming opportunities. They summoned the Black board members and told them that all (not some) of the architectural and construction management contracts should go to our community. The board members understood. The next logical stop was with Mr. Rodney Black, IPS Business Manager. Rodney was a traditional white guy bureaucrat who had been at that position for decades. I asked “Mr. Black isn’t it time we used a Black construction management firm?” His reply was cold, “There is no such thing in the state of Indiana.” It was on! Two weeks later I brought to him three Black construction management firms: Powers and Sons from Gary, Indiana; Murdock Construction Co. from South Bend, Indiana and Batteast and Sons Construction also from South Bend. They gave their presentations and then I summed it all up, “Mr. Black I understand that there is a construction management contract coming up within the next
month. Also, Dr. Shirl Gilbert will become the new Superintendent of Schools just after that. Dr. Gilbert and I are friends and I have his ‘ear’. “You, sir, are going to hire one of these three firms for that construction management contract. One of these three will be in place by the time Dr. Gilbert arrives. If not, you will be fired shortly thereafter. It is not a threat but a promise. Trust me!” We left. He and the contractors thought I was crazy but eventually they realized I was dead serious. The day before Dr. Gilbert came into office Powers and Sons called and informed me that they had just signed the contract. History was made! It was the first construction management contract given to a Black firm in the state of Indiana. Now that the mold was broken we could go after the upcoming 12 projects. The whole town was abuzz and the White power structure was beginning to get very nervous. The biggest thing was that Dr. Gilbert came into office knowing Black firms can do the job. Actually, the fact was our Black firms were more qualified than the White ones. Our guys were Purdue, Michigan St. and Ohio St. trained engineers. They were also
second and third generation family firms. The situation for our architects was identical. It became apparent that if the process relied on skill sets it was going to be like basketball or football. We could win. All this time we were running for the “crumbs” when we actually deserved premium “slices”. With the majority of board votes and a proud Black superintendent things were going to change for the better. We had the board members assemble a competitive task force. All 12 construction management contracts as well as the twelve architecture contracts will be based on formal presentations by the competing firms to the taskforce. Fifteen architecture firms and 32 construction management firms competed. It was truly amazing when it was over. The Black firms blew all their White competition away with quality, track record, and professionalism. It was heartwarming to hear from the founders who passed the baton on to their well educated children and the process of grooming the third generation was beginning to jell. All of them came from Southern roots and the equalizer was getting their children well-trained at some
of the finest schools in the nation and emulating that same process with the grandchildren. At the end of the process, two Black construction management firms, Powers and Sons and S.R. Smoot (Columbus, Ohio), received six schools each. They quickly established subsidiary offices in Indianapolis and began hiring locally. Two local Black architecture firms, Blackburn and Woods, received six schools each also. The final decision rested with Dr. Gilbert. The school board voted down racial lines and many white firms threatened to sue. Dr. Gilbert’s closing words were music to our ears, “I understand that in the 80 years of operation, this school system has never had a Black construction management firm or Black architect doing any work. I am proud to break that tradition based on the merit of the competitors.” Finally, the Black business community of Indianapolis had arrived.

Obama on African Responsibility By Ron Walters NNPA Columnist I was happy to see President Barack Obama travel to Africa in the first year of his Administration and his praise for the progress of Ghana seemed to be a vehicle to elevate the position of Africa in his foreign policy. But listening to his speech to the Ghanian Assembly, in his analysis of the route to progress, I was also struck by the re-emergence of the theme of responsibility, similar to his speeches before African-American audiences. It seems to be a theme that paralyzes Black criticism and plays well with Whites who believe that the irresponsibility of Blacks - and their African kin – is the major reason for their failure to achieve equality with other nations. He proposed African corruption as the other theme that also plays well as a reason for the lack of African progress. But corruption is not confined to Africa, so if that were the major factor few countries anywhere would have experienced sufficient progress. Acknowledging that corruption is a The Chicago Crusader
problem in Africa, especially in places such as Nigeria which has vast oil wealth, for most states in Africa the human resources taken through the “door of no return” and the financial pillage since then has led to it’s persistent poverty as the major factor. Such drastic poverty carries with the accompanying problems of disease, low education, lack of country infrastructure, malnutrition and etc. At one point, Obama compared the progress of Korea to that of Kenya, but Korea did not have Africa’s history and so it was able to benefit from foreign investment with which it instituted a system of mass general education that built a skilled work force. International firms have been slow to invest in Africa – and not just because of the existence of corruption; they have always found creative ways to deal with corruption if the prospect of substantial profits were worth it. Global racism is, no doubt, one of the major factors why Africa has been excluded from robust foreign investment, but there is also the residual control that European countries still exercise over many African countries, their currencies and raw materials.
Ron Walters
Then, the cost of investment – building not only businesses but the accompanying infrastructure - is higher in Africa than in many places due to the lack of business and physical infrastructure. So, to preach responsibility to African countries suggests that they could build their economies by just changing their attitudes. It is far more difficult than that. They must begin to build on the fruits of Continental trade at home, but African countries have similar baskets of goods which reduces the incentive for trade where the financial returns would be low. Fundamentally, individual African countries cannot face the in-

ternational system by themselves where globalization is re-shaping economics by the emergence of regional economic structures. The European Union is such an emerging formidable institution, the United States has NAFTA and CAFTA, and Asian trade is greater among Asian countries than between them and the rest of the globe – with the sole exception of China. With this structure how can small – or even larger African countries - hope to compete and bring in the kinds of revenue that can help support a nation. At the end of July, the Africa Union, together with the Government of Senegal is sponsoring a conference on how to continue to construct the United States of Africa. The Unity of the African continent is the only hope for economic development in a world of regional economic dominance. If this is what people mean by “exercising responsibility” then we are on the same page, but somehow, I don’t think so. I think they are fine with African countries continuing to accept international financial assistance and laying their markets at the feet of American, European or Chinese interests through Saturday, July 18, 2009
trade deals like the African Growth and Opportunity Act. You can tell by the howls that go up when African governments attempt to take over control of their natural resources and market them for the good of their own peoples. Rather than being “responsible” I prefer the concept of African self-determination, because it means that Africa destiny is the responsibility of African people, but only in a context where the playing field is level and where African people control the means of their destiny. I agree with Obama that such African governments must exercise democratic leadership, but much of the internal conflict with which they contend comes as a result of the lack of resources – food, jobs, education to which they do not have the sufficient keys. Adequate resources is the fuel needed to make the engine of responsibility move nations. Dr. Ron Walters is the Prof e s so r E m e r i t u s a t t h e U n iver sity o f Mar yland Coll ege Park. Day in and day out we can observe the increased number of African people killing each other, mentally and physically abusing each other, stealing from each other, being dishonest with each other, and the list goes on and on.

These negative incidents occur, in part, because segments of the African community in the United States are disconnected from the moral and ethical traditions that have characterized relationships among African people in the past. It is critical that we repair ourselves as we build the Reparations Movement. The problem with segments of African people in this country being disconnected from the great contributions of African people to the civilizations of the world has resulted in far too many of us believing that the current situation we find ourselves in cannot be changed. Many African people believe that the condition of African people in America is permanent and there is nothing we can do to change our circumstances. Therefore, this disconnected group of African people has chosen the easy road. They travel on the road of cooperating and collaborating with the forces of white supremacy who continue to 6
demonstrate they will do any and everything in their power to keep African people in this country, and the rest of the world on the bottom. This has resulted in many African people in America (and the world community), developing a “bottom mentality.” In other words, many of our people buy into whatever the white supremacy forces feed us through the media, (mis)educational institutions, and religious institutions. What we are constantly being fed is that we are on the bottom and we will remain on the bottom. What the white supremacy forces offer individual African people in America, is that as an individual you can get off the bottom if you join us, if you “pull yourself up by your bootstraps.” Never mind your group, your family and your cultural ties, “there is nothing that can be done with those people. Join us and everything will be alright.” If you join us, “you can obtain a good job, buy a nice house in a good neighborhood, buy a nice car, take nice vacations, and some of you, whom we chose, can even live with us.” We were not always like this as a people. We did not have a “dog, eat dog” mentality and this is what we must examine as we continue to struggle to overthrow the system of white supremacy and its impact on us as a people. The Creative Force of the universe has endowed us with the capacity to make great contributions to the world. A simple inspection of the ancient Nile Valley civilization of Kemet (Egypt) should inspire all African people to respect their history and to hold themselves in high esteem. Kemet and the Kemetic people, our ancestors, were the creators of math, science, architecture, writing, governance, astronomy, astrology, medicine, art, and so much more. The Kemetic people amassed great wisdom that was left as instructions written in Medew Netcher (Divine Speech) or what Europeans call hieroglyphs. One place we can examine this ancient Kemetic wisdom is in a book entitled, Selection From the Husia: Sacred Wisdom of Ancient Egypt. The Husia gives insight into how our ancestors viewed life, death, human relations, marriage, parenting, use of power,

God, family, and the standards of moral and ethical conduct. Reading these spiritual texts elicits strong feelings in and for African people in a most profound and spiritual way. Peruse these words from The Husia: The Book of Ptah Hotep: “Do not terrorize people for if you do, God will punish you accordingly. If anyone lives by such means, God will take bread from his or her mouth. If one says I shall be rich by such means, [he] she will eventually have to say my means entrapped me.” This passage continues:
“If one says I will rob another, he will end up being robbed himself. The plans of men and women do not always come to pass, for in the end it is the will of God, which prevails. Therefore, one should live in peace with others and they will come and willingly give gifts, which another would take from them through fear.” Written about five thousand years ago, the wisdom of these words of instruction should cause African people to reflect on their significance as we struggle to create a greater good for our race. The wisdom of our ancestors should give us the inspiration to rededicate ourselves to the continued struggle for the liberation of African people worldwide. As a race of people our survival and development is dependent upon each other. A greater responsibility is placed upon those of us who proclaim the African Way after the ravaging of African civilizations, African culture, African minds, and African lands. As I have repeated many times in previous columns, we have a responsibility and a duty to our brothers and sisters to build institutions based on African spirituality, ethics, and morals, and give back that which the Creator has given us, “All Life, Power, and Health, like the Sun Forever.” I urge all African people to take a meditative moment and look deeply inside of ourselves as a people. Let us restore what the ancient Black people of Kemet called Maat: Divine Order, Harmony, Balance, Truth, Justice, Righteousness, and Reciprocity. We had, and lived by Maat be-

Worry not is the back-up of the above. Though God lets us know that he is around us or those who have been sent to let you know that we will be taken through THE GOOD AND BAD TIMES EVEN UNTIL OUR DEATH OR THAT OF OUR LOVED ONES. Though that death is known to come in the night and day, but mostly in the dead of night, regardless of whenever it comes day or night, one can be sure that one will see the face of God. The “worry not part” is assistance from the dark side that one surely will die in the arms of demons or the Devil himself. Little children fear not the coming of death because they are more close to the Lord with their innocence and purity of heart, they still feel the warmth of the light and day. Recklessness comes hand in hand as they . . . the children . . . move deeper into life’s hazards and misunderstandings. Even adults act like children and acquire the heat of death and return back to the arms of God. Though there is assured everlasting peace in death and the assurance that you surely will be judged by God and His judgment and the everlasting gift of His promise of the end days and the beginning of the new age is His promise that there will come

a new Earth and a new Heaven. Stand still to the fact of His words and promise. He already knows that we are not perfect because although that we are made in His likeness and are assured of our likeness of God and the Angels around Him we are still not perfect. Heaven is assured to each of us regardless of the life that we live or life we have lived. Guard over the children. Jesus has said, ”Suffer not the little children and forbid them not,to come unto me; for such is the kingdom of heaven.” That is why the elders who return to being like children will not be held from the eyes of the Lord.

DETAINED Former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney is back in the United States after being detained in Israel some days after a humanitarian ship, “Spirit of Humanity” she was aboard was intercepted by the Israeli Navy.
THE CHATTERBOX
The ship was on its way to Gaza with toys, cement/construction products and medicine. What has folks talking is the fact that the news of her detainment, along with 20 others, was hardly reported in the mainstream press. The Israelis wanted them to sign a deportation document, which they refused. McKinney said that President Obama had just told Israel to let in humanitarian and reconstruction supplies “and that’s exactly what we tried to do.” However, there has been no condemnation of Israel’s actions, and the detainees have been released. Talk about a rock and a hard place, President Obama will know the true meaning of this term in dealing with the Israel situation before it is over.

Be for real!! Mayor Rudy Clay keeps talking about a Michael Jackson Museum and says it will definitely happen since Michael’s death, but naysayers say don’t hold your breath. Michael only came back to Gary once, maybe twice after he left as a child, seeking fame as a singer. Joe Jackson said it was good to come home when he spoke last Friday night at the memorial to Michael in
Gary, but his travels haven’t brought him back to Gary too often either. Rudy Clay knows how to hit the heartstrings and wear them out, but I don’t know if he is a miracle worker and it will take a miracle to get a museum in Gary in honor of Michael.

An Unlikely Weapon “It took 1/500th of a second to g e t t h e s h o t a n d a l if e t im e t o forget it.” Gordon Parks appears in documentary abo ut noted photojournalist Eddie Adams
You don’t have to be a photographer, nor a journalist, to appreciate the documentary An Unlikely Weapon: The Ed die Ada ms Story. One would just have to be human to be impressed by the professional life story of esteemed Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Eddie Adams. Now, many may not know just who Adams is. But a photo that he took on Feb. 1, 1968, in Saigon was credited with having had great influence in ending the Vietnam War. The photo would “sear in the public’s mind the stark brutality of war.” The photo that would shake the war’s very foundation and could very well be labeled the “unlikely weapon”—as well as Adams’ camera—was a photo of the execution of a Vietcong prisoner titled “Saigon Execution.” The photo shows the National Chief of Police for South Vietnam, General Loan, shooting the prisoner point-blank in the head, with blood spurting out, and it “shocked people in the country,” said broadcast journalist Peter Jennings. “I think it brought
Gordon Parks home for everyone the absolute cruelty of that war, and whatever romance people may have felt about it washed away by that photograph,” said broadcast journalist Tom Brokaw. Photojournalist Bill Eppridge said, “I think this picture was the moment that changed the war.” But the documentary reveals that Adams never considered the photo a great work of art and did not understand why it was so important. He could be considered a renegade, ambitious, hardwork-
Eddie Adams ing, hard-cursing, photographer who loved his work, and who also loved and lived life to the fullest. During the time he was in Vietnam, shooting photos for the Associated Press, he could not believe that the United States was not as moved by the images taken by him and fellow photojournalists—until the photo of the execution was printed. At one point prior to taking the photo, Adams had asked to return to New York City, but said he was concerned because while walking in Manhattan a Vietnam veteran on crutches was almost run over by a taxicab driver. He asked to be re-assigned to Vietnam, because “I felt that people didn’t appreciate the war.” He also felt that as long as he was wearing his cameras and equipment out in the Vietnam fields that he was protected from any danger. An Unlikely Weapon, narrated by Keifer Sutherland and directed by Susan Morgan Cooper, reveals what Adams perceived as our country’s initial reluctance to acknowledge the inhumane acts occurring within this “conflict,” as well as Adams’ moral dilemma about his part in the entire scheme of things. While newspaper accounts were also available, Adams’ and other photojournalists’ photos brought the battlefields of Vietnam to living rooms around the world. Adams believed their work could more amplify the circumstances of the war, as opposed to a writer just sending words across the newswires back to the United States. “You do what you have to do,” said the late photographer, director and poet Gordon Parks about the work of photojournalists chronicling the action of war. “You are trying to catch the last breath of a person dying, their last gasp; that is difficult. I’ve

done that several times and you realize that the person realizes that I was there to record their last breath. You almost want to say I’m sorry for being there,” he said. “You don’t always come home feeling good about yourself, you know, but that’s what happens.” Later Adams learns that the photograph had also inspired the Russian roulette scene in the movie the Deer Hunter. “He was not allowed to forget that photograph,” said his son, August Adams. “It almost haunts me the same way it haunted my dad.” Rocker Dave Navarro says he keeps a copy of the photo on his wall to remind him of human suffering. Adams’ The Boat of No Smiles photographs of refugees escaping Vietnam—with no children smiling in the bunch—was another instrumental body of work. Adams recalled that no matter what, children would always smile for photos, and in this case, their beaten, defeated faces, along with those of their parents, revealed such pain and despair. Eventually this collection of photos was presented to the U.S. Congress and led former Pres. Jimmy Carter to allow entry for more than 250,000 Vietnamese refugees into the United States in 1977. Walter Anderson, Editor, CEO Parade magazine said, “Eddie could be an editor’s dream and an editor’s nightmare. That same genius led Eddie to be one of the biggest pains in the ass in journalism,” he said. “He could be the single, most demanding, selfish, self-centered, egomaniacal talent ever.” After the Vietnam War, Adams took a job with Penthouse magazine and opened his own studio called Bathhouse Studios, which was housed in an old bathhouse. During this time, he shot photos of such celebs as Billy Crystal, Morgan Freeman, Ray Charles, Jerry Lewis, Adrian Brody, the Clintons, and Clint Eastwood— one of which became the poster for Eastwood’s Unforgiven movie. Adams also collaborated with Kerry Kennedy, the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy’s daughter, on a pictorial named Speak Truth to Power. The book showed Desmond Tutu and other human rights activists, as well as people who had had their human rights violated. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince A Review by Bonnie DeShong The sixth chapter in the life of Harry Potter begins where the fifth chapter left off. Harry and Professor Dumbledore had just finished winning one of many battles with the ominous villain Lord Voldermort. Harry is battered and worn and knows that he must face his archenemy again. Cut to a coffee shop in a train station, Harry is there reading the newspaper and flirting (yes Harry Potter is looking at a girl in “that” way) with the waitress. Just when he has a date lined up and ready for a great evening, Professor Dumbledore appears and off they fly to another mysterious meeting. The first ten minutes of this film lets you know that it will be different from all others. Harry has grown into a young man and the mating process is beginning. Voldermort is stronger and his army is growing. Hogwarts has a dark shadow over it, which makes Professor Dumbledore even more mysterious, and Ron Weasley is

taller than Harry. Professor Dumbledore has whisked Harry away from the pretty waitress to help persuade former Hogwarts Professor Horace Slughorn to come back to teach at the school. It seems that Voldermort, as a young student was one of Slughorn’s prize pupils. To stop Voldermort, Dumbledore needs a special memory from Slughorn. Harry is the only person he can trust to help him fulfill his mission. Harry is the Chosen One to destroy Voldermort. Draco Malfoy is an angry young man. In the early chapters he was just obnoxious, but now he is not only angry but he is also hurting. His father has been imprisoned for helping the dark lord. Draco has been given a mission to revenge his father and help Voldermort gain power. Now with all this darkness around Harry and Hogwarts you might be wondering is there any happiness in this film. As a matter fact, there is. There
Daniel Radcliffe’s Harry Potter is stronger. Still quiet, impulsive and loyal, however, there is the total understanding that he is The Chosen One. Emma Watson has made Hermione more real and feeling. She is still smart but she is now studying the art of life. Rupert Grint’s Ron is just clueless, funny, and loyal and is the true comic relief. I think we see the best Quidditch game of any of the films.
RUPERT GRINT AS Ron Weasley, Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, Emma Watson as Hermione Granger in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince." are plenty of chuckles in the film. romantic scenes really hits home I found the Weasley house, with that they are growing up. All in all it is a very good telling of the story, however, if this is your first Harry Potter film or if you have not read the books, I guarantee there will be times when you won’t have a clue of what is going on, you will catch on. Young children may get bored or even frightened. This is not the cheery colorful Harry Potter film of old. It is almost as if the color has been sucked out of Hogwarts. Go see the film and then head over to the Museum of Science and Industry and check out the world premier of the Harry Potter exhibition.

EDUCATION
UIC graduate student wins $60,000 Ford Foundation A University of Illinois at Chicago graduate student has received a $60,000 Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowship. Akilah Watkins-Butler, a doctoral student in sociology, is one of 60 students nationwide to receive the award. Watkins-Butler will study African-American marriage patterns and family formation and its impact on community functioning. As part of her research in a yet-tobe-determined Chicago neighborhood, she will examine key community indicators such as economic health, homeownership, and time residents spend there. She will also conduct interviews with residents. “I’m really interested to find out why African-American marriage rates have been declining, especially over the last 70 years, and what that decline has meant for communities,” Watkins-Butler said. “I want to find out how [residents] perceive their community changing, if any, and what they perceive as the effect that marriage has on it.” The Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowship will provide $20,000
annual funding for three years, in addition to a $2,000 award to UIC. Watkins-Butler plans to produce a mini-documentary and a book following her dissertation to bring greater attention to the issue. “I hope to capture people’s voices and package it in a way that people that work with communities of color can use it as a tool,” she said. “I want to devote scholarship in a way that everyday folks can use it and learn.” Watkins-Butler said there is also a personal aspect to the study. “I live in a world where many of my friends and family members want to get married but aren’t able to get married because of a lot of social barriers,” she said. Watkins-Butler earned a master’s degree in sociology from UIC in May. She previously earned two master’s degrees — one in business education and another in community economic development — from Southern New Hampshire University, and a bachelor’s degree in community and human services from Empire State College in New

the Community Foundation of Greater Atlanta, where she received a Ford Foundation fellowship in 2005. Along with her husband, Kamau, a doctoral student at the University of Chicago, she co-authored “The Love Ethic: The

The Ford Foundation’s diversity fellowships are granted to a select group of individuals that have demonstrated “superior academic achievement, are committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level, show promise of future achievement as scholars and teachers, and are well prepared to use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.” UIC ranks among the nation’s top 50 universities in federal research funding and is Chicago’s largest university with 25,000 students, 12,000 faculty and staff, 15 colleges and the state’s major public medical center. A hallmark of the campus is the Great Cities Commitment, through which UIC faculty, students and staff engage with community, corporate, foundation and government partners in hundreds of programs to improve the quality of life in metropolitan areas around the world.

At Paseo Garden, anyone can join in. In Chicago, like in other major urban cities, artists are often credited with ushering in gentrification. As artists move into neighborhoods, developers and trendy businesses soon follow, turning blighted areas into lucrative real estate hot spots. The resulting neighborhood displaces the poorest of residents, which often includes the working artists. Montañez believes there is an alternative. “We are already rich; Our wealth is our culture. We can turnaround our neighborhoods by promoting local talent and local businesses without pushing out the existing storefronts, the poorest of residents, and working artists.” The Paseo event is one in a series of art related events in Logan

But in a letter to Daley last week, Bayer told the Mayor “Chicago cannot become the world-class city” Daley wants it to be without a “dedicated, experienced and motivated work force.” Bayer went on to say citizens would also be hurt by layoffs. He said citizens already wait in long lines at city-run public health centers and wait weeks for potholes to be repaired. He said the layoffs will only make things worse. Tom Clair serves as secretary-treasurer of Teamsters Local 726. He said the negotiating sessions with the city all came down to comp time versus overtime pay. Clair said his members already can not get the vacation time due to them be-
cause of a manpower shortage and that asking his members to take comp time when they already can not get their vacation when they want is too much to
ask. He said his members have already made enough past concessions to the city. “We had 229 workers laid off in March,” he said. “We feel we did our part. Last
year there were 38 layoffs. We’ve given enough.” Daley originally threatened to cut 1,504 workers but later reached deals with 25 unions to avoid layoffs

Andrew said the highlight of the camp for him was the 25-yard catch he made thrown by Devin Hester himself. Andrew went into the end zone for a touchdown.
