Michael Jackson Family Attorney Tells What's Next for Child Custody; Estate By Pharoh Martin NNPA National Correspondent The family of Michael Jackson will find the answers to lingering issues surrounding the late pop icon's estate and the legal custody of his three children, who range in ages from 7 to 12, during a critical August 3 hearing in Los Angeles. Michael Jackson's mother, Katherine Jackson, has hired high-profile celebrity attorney L. Londell McMillan to handle those legal affairs. McMillan, who served as attorney for Michael Jackson for three years has also represented other music stars such as Prince, Stevie Wonder, Lil’ Kim and Kanye West. In an exclusive interview with the NNPA

Those thoughts are in contrast to those of Congressman Bobby Rush (D-IL-1) who held a hearing on July 27th at the Dirksen Federal Building and said congress should immediately begin drafting legislation to protect bereaved families. Members of the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection listened for three hours as family members with loved ones buried at Burr Oak testified of the hell they have experienced during the past few weeks. NEWS Gates Arrest Was Not First Racial Embarrassment for Cambridge Police By Hazel Trice Edney NNPA Editor-in-Chief The recent outrage in response to the Cambridge Police Department’s arrest of prominent Harvard Professor Henry Louis “Skip” Gates was not the first time that the Cambridge Police Department was nationally embarrassed amidst a racial incident. Ten years ago, the Cambridge Police commissioner and mayor issued a public apology after a

Professor Henry Louis “Skip” Gates story by this reporter exposed racially offensive teachings and language by Cambridge police officers during an interview about the use of pepper spray. Though a decade has passed, last week’s incident in which

Gates was arrested for disorderly conduct in his own home was a stark reminder of the ugliness of racial stereotyping and profiling in Cambridge and across the country. It also reminded America of the longevity of friction between police and people of color. “It’s a national problem and we haven’t been able to really control it in a rational way,” says Harvard Law Professor Charles Ogletree in an NNPA interview. Ogletree, the lawyer for Gates, says he is glad the incident has sparked a national discussion that began in Cambridge but could have farreaching and long-term ramifications. Gates was arrested on his front porch by Sgt. James Crowley even after he showed his Harvard I.D. and driver’s license to the officer who was investigating what a neighbor apparently thought was a burglary. It was actually Gates and his driver trying to get into his front door, which was stuck. The charges were dropped against Gates, who became irate during the heated confrontation. He was handcuffed, arrested and held for four hours. The incident brought back memories. A headline on the website of this week’s Cambridge Chronicle reminds, “Not the first time Cambridge Police Department faced with race allegations.” It was early August 1999. A group of white Cambridge police officers – including a use of force trainer - sat around a desk inside the police department talking to this reporter. They were confident and bois-

terous in the taped interview as they told how their police academy trained their officers that Mexicans and other people who may have grown up eating or working with a lot of cayenne peppers were immune to the affects of pepper spray. “The people that it doesn’t affect are people who have consumed cayenne peppers from the time they are small children, and this generally breaks into ethnic categories,” Officer Frank Gutoski, a trainer in the academy, told this reporter, who at that time was working a summer job for the Cambridge Chronicle. “Every year, I teach this,” Gutoski was quoted in the Aug. 19, 1999 story headlined, “Pepper Spray Theory Stings Some Minorities.” He named Mexican-Americans, Pakistani Indians and Cajuns as

examples of people who are more likely tolerant to the chemicallike spray that causes intense burning in the eyes and face and closing of air passages. Two other officers in the room excitedly agreed during the openly taped interview. Emergency room doctors gasped at the police theory: “This is absolutely not true,’’ said Dr. Michael Burns, emergency medicine attending physician and medical toxicologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. “Most police have no medical background and there is absolutely no scientific evidence whatsoever to support this.’’ The story was picked up by news mediums around the country, including the Boston Globe, which reported that “Many doctors and law enforcement specialists say it sounds crazy.” Amidst community outrage and embarrassment, Cambridge police and city leaders immediately issued a public apology for the racially offensive and medically unfounded statements. “It is unfortunate that these comments were made,” said then Cambridge Police Commissioner Ronnie Watson. “There is no empirical or scientific evidence to support these statements.” Then Mayor Francis H. Duehay said, “It is inconceivable in this day and age that the training program for police officers in Cambridge would contain information which has no scientific basis and slanders the Latino community … I apologize for the misinformation about pepper spray which has been communi-

tennial Boule Hostess Chapters, not the national organization. “Although I do not usually comment on active litigation or the allegations raised in that litigation, I am compelled to speak publicly at this time,” said McKinzie, an Olympia Fields resident. “The malicious allegations levelled against AKA by former leaders are based on mischaracterizations and fabrications not befitting our ideals of sisterhood, ethics and service,” she added. The lawsuit was filed by eight sorority members in June in Washington D.C. Superior Court against the organization and several board members. The lawsuit alleges McKinzie misused a corporate credit card to rack up hundreds of thousands of dollars in designer clothing, jewelry, and lingerie. The lawsuit also alleges that McKinzie had the organization bankroll a $1 million life insurance policy for her and to provide a $4,000 monthly stipend for the certified public accoun-

tant once she leaves her post. McKinzie said she has done nothing wrong and the allegation of abuse of AKA funds for personal use “are false and unsupported by the organization’s audited books.” The statement further said the sorority has “stringent financial standards” and “all expenses were consistent with furthering AKA’s mission.” However the statement did note that the sorority board of directors authorized the stipend for McKinzie, who is the deputy director of finance and administration for Chicago’s Neighborhood Housing Services, according to her bio on the sorority’s website. Founded in 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority has more than 950 chapters in the United States, the Caribbean, and Canada. Its membership boasts some very notable women, including astronaut Dr. Mae Jemison, poet Maya Angelou, actress Phylicia Rashad and entertainer Gladys Knight, among others.

AKA president denounces lawsuit as baseless Eight sorority members sue to remove president for misuse of funds By Chicago Crusader staff reporter

The head of the country’s oldest Black sorority is denying allegations levelled in a lawsuit claiming that she mismanaged funds for personal gain, including commissioning a $900,000 wax figure of herself to be displayed in a Baltimore Black museum. In a statement to the Chicago Cr usader, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority President Barbara McKinzie said the charges in the lawsuit were without merit and a gross misrepresentation of facts. She said the $900,000 was allocated by the AKA Board of Directors to help defray the cost of the 100-year-old organization’s 2010 convention. McKinzie said the sorority purchased two wax figures, one of herself and one of the organization’s 2

cated and for the ethnic slur it contains.’’ In the Gates incident, there were no such apologies forthcoming. Police stood firmly behind Crowley who insisted he was correct in his actions despite public outrage. The Chro nicle recounted the 1999 incident after even President Obama weighed in on the Gates arrest. In a nationally televised press conference July 22, Obama said the police department “acted stupidly” in the arrest. But, he later softened the criticism, saying he did not mean to disparage Sgt. Crowley or the department and invited the officer and Gates to the White House for a beer this week. Ogletree, executive director of Harvard’s Charles Hamilton Institute for Race and Justice, hopes the conversations will go much further than just beers at the White House. Civil rights advocates have long fought to end racial profiling. He says this incident could rejuvenate that cause. A 1994 book that he helped produce with the national NAACP examined what happened with the video-taped 1993 Rodney King beatings and what could be learned. The book, “Beyond the Rodney King Story: An Investigation of Police Conduct in Minority Communities,” laid out a series of investigations that had recommendations. They included the need for community policing, culturally sensitive policing, more diversity in police forces around the country and the need to make sure there was continuous police training on meeting the needs of an increasingly diverse community. “Those recommendations in 1994 are eerily necessary in 2009 as a result of the incident that sparked the debate on July 16,” he said. Currently, Ogletree says plans are underway to bring together diverse segments of the Cambridge community to discuss issues that led to the blow up and how to avoid them in the future. But that’s just one city. “The national effort will take much longer,” he said. But there is hope as he is getting emails and texts from people of every race, gender and class “who are accounting their own experiences and wanting profiling to end,” he said. “The fact that people are willing to talk about it, willing to meet about it, to move from their strongly held views to some alternative possibilities is a real strength. And that makes me exceedingly optimistic that we will be able to resolve this in an important way.” The Chicago Crusader

Los Angeles newspaper publisher dies John Henry Holoman, publisher of the Herald Dispatch in Los Angeles, died on July 24. He was 70. Holoman was born on March 21, 1939 in McCaskill, Arkansas to Maejordie and Cashie Holoman, the third of five siblings: Theodies, Frank, Barbara and Donnell. He was affectionately known as “Sonny” to his family and friends. The family moved to Kansas City, Missouri in 1943. John flourished in his new surroundings. An avid athlete and scholar, John developed a network of friends with whom he remained close until his passing. Though they met for the first time at camp in elementary school, it was while attending Lincoln High School in Kansas City where John fell in love with Lucille Foster. While studying Business Administration at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri, John and Lucille married in 1958. In 1959 they welcomed the birth of their daughter, Stephanie, on January 9th and moved to Los Angeles six months later. He began a job with the U.S. Postal Service. On October 23, 1960, their son Eric was born.

John Henry Holoman

While working at the Post Office, John became a licensed real estate broker and began a long career in real estate sales and development, during which he worked on one of the first African American home developments in Los Angeles County, Centerview, in Gardena, where the family resided for a num-

ber of years before moving to View Park, and then on to Lafayette Square. In 1965, John went to work as an executive for Allstate Insurance. In 1974, John went on to work for Reynolds Aluminum where at the height of his career he served as Vice President of Sales and Marketing and was named Salesman of the Year. In the early 80s, he left Reynolds Aluminum for Home Savings. It was during his tenure at Home Savings and Loan that he became known as the “Original Urban Banker” and later became instrumental in founding the LA Urban Bankers. He was among the first African American Senior Vice Presidents of a major banking institution in the U.S. As a business leader and activist, John became concerned with the manner in which the African American experience was being reported in the mainstream press and decided along with Lucille in 1982 to acquire and publish the Herald Dispatch, where they worked closely with Stephanie, who managed day-to-day operations. In the late ’80s, he and Eric began

Holoman Food Service where they owned and operated 17 Church’s Fried Chicken restaurant franchises. Throughout his career, John was the recipient of numerous awards and commendations from city, state and federal elected officials and never stopped working; consulting for Diageo as well as family holdings well into retirement. John was a founding member of the Black Business Association and a member of the Board of Directors, as well as a Board Member of the Consolidated Realty Board, Past President of the West Coast Black Publishers Association and a member as well as board member of the National Newspaper Publishers Association. His interest in politics transcended partisan ideology and John, previously a Democrat, registered and ran for the State Assembly as a Republican in 1974, later changing his party affiliation in 2008 in order to vote in the California Primary for our first African American President Barack Obama. John’s civic and social activities included serving as a member of the boards

of Morehouse School of Medicine, Jackie Robinson Foundation, founding member of the City Club on Bunker Hill and member of the Jonathan Club, LA Guardsmen and the “Number 1” member of the LA Rat Pack. John was deeply committed to mentoring and developing future generations of young people as a Pop Warner coach for a number of years. John was preceded in death by his parents as well as his brother Theodies. John H. Holoman leaves to treasure his life and legacy his devoted wife Lucille, his children Stephanie and Eric, grandchildren Tony, Eric and Simone, great grandchildren Tony III and Chace, siblings Frank, Barbara, and Donnell, daughter-in-law Terri, granddaughter-in-law Kisha, brothersin-law John M. Foster, Charles L. Foster, Elmer D. Garrett, sister-inlaw Barbara L. Garrett, best friend of 65 years William “Wick” Rogers and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and cherished friends. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 1, at 10 a.m. at First AME Church in Los Angeles.

Michael Jackson Family Attorney Tells (Continued from page 1) There are two distinct legal actions at play that the Jackson family is pursuing. One action is as it relates to the custody and guardianship of Michael Jackson's three children. The other is how it relates to the administration, control and management of Michael’s estate, which is believed to be valued in excess of half of a billion dollars. It includes his music recordings, art work, various real estate interests and business interests such as the Beatles renowned Sony/ATV music catalog and, of course, Michael's own highly lucrative music publishing catalog. Katherine Jackson currently has temporary custody of 12-year-old Michael Joseph Jr., known as Prince Michael; 11-year-old Paris Michael Katherine Jackson; and 7-year-old Prince Michael II, known as Blanket. The lawyer said that despite the media scrutiny the negotiation process has not been contentious as has been reported. However, the same cannot be said about the proceedings involving the control of Michael’s estate. “There have been quite a bit of back and forth and differences of opinion with respect to how Michael Jackson’s business will be handled and who will control, The Chicago Crusader

administer and handle his business assets. And that is how the difficulty has created much concern and debate,” McMillan said. Katherine Jackson will contest custodial oversight of the will at the August 3 probate, during which all claims will be resolved and the distribution of Michael’s property will be determined. The will, written by Michael Jackson in 2002, named attorney John Branca and music executive John McClain as the will’s executors. Michael’s close associates both have temporary control of Jackson’s estate. The assets will be transferred into a trust, which will also be administrated by the same co-executives, except the trust’s charitable component, at which point Katherine Jackson is a part of the trustee team. The will states that Katherine Jackson should be a beneficiary and named as the guardian of the children and their estates. “Based on 2002, when that will was drafted, and June 25th of 2009, when Mr. Jackson passed away, there's been a considerable amount of evidence that Mr. Jackson would not and does not want this particular estate served by individuals that were listed in 2002 without his mother having a seat at that table,” McMillan ex-

plains why he believes Katherine Jackson should be allowed to be involved in the decisions of business affairs of the estate. McMillan reasons that rather than fighting it out in the court system, this should be an invitation by the executive; particularly since Katherine Jackson is the only adult beneficiary of the will and the trust. “For the life of me, we are having difficulties understanding why Mr. Branca and Mr. McClain continue to object to Michael Jackson's mother serving on the trustee team with her advisers to make sure that Michael Jackson's legacy is going to be administered and controlled in a way that she knows and those that were close to Michael toward the end of his days knows what he would have wanted,” McMillan said. “To have his estate go into the hands of people from 2002 that he's ceased doing business with, and that he later had disputes with, presents challenges and problems, and it also puts a legacy issue in question. And that is what we are seeking to resolve.” McMillan also laid truth to rumors involving the roles of various family members on the matter. “The truth is that Katherine

BLACKS MUST CONTROL THEIR OWN COMMUNITY

Jackson will be the guardian,” McMillan responded when asked about reports that Michael's sister Rebe Jackson would raise the kids if Katherine got awarded custody. “She's very active and she's a very healthy and vibrant 70 plus yearold woman. She's always been the primary maternal caretaker of that entire family and their grandchildren. The rumors are circulating, possibly, because Rebe is very close to her mother and she's always been like a parent to her siblings and others.” A lot has been made in the media about Joe Jackson's involvement but McMillan shot that down also. “He has very little, if any, influence other than he’s the grandfather. He said hello and he shows his support. He will have no child rearing obligations with these children,” he said. He added that Joe Jackson will have no connection to affairs of the estate. “Michael did not have his family play a major role in his business, other than his mom. His mother is one that is a trustee and has been a trustee in his businesses and she should be a trustee in his post-death business. She’s the one person that he’s trusted more than anybody else in his life.”

Saturday, August 1, 2009

McMillan argued that if Katherine Jackson is not in control of her son's legacy then it will go into the hands of people who do not share the same interests as the late pop icon or the community that he was concerned about. “Elvis Presley's family has a seat at the table. The Beatles’ family has a seat at the table. Michael Jackson's mother should have a seat at the table.” For now, she is a beneficiary. According to McMillan, the will divides Michael's assets as such: 20 percent will go to charity, 40 percent held in trust for Mrs. Jackson and the rest will be held in trust for Michael's children. He said a primary concern here is if Mrs. Jackson doesn't have custody, who will have control of Michael Jackson's legacy and his history from here until the rest of time? “He had some definitive views about how he wanted his life and legacy to be remembered. Why would people want to restrict his mother from serving in an equal capacity on some board to oversee Michael Jackson's legacy? I don't accept that proposition.” 3

MATH PROBLEMS It has often been said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting to get different results. Though this is the case, it seems to be what many Black Americans are doing when it comes to socalled “economic development.” What often happens is Black people are looking for the jobs on the lowest rungs of the economic ladder. This is because, no doubt, that a great many are at those levels. Since this is the case, why don’t we opt for a different strategy, a more effective strategy? Why don’t we “follow the money?” A recent article by Julianne Pepitone in CNNMoney.com states that “the top highest earning college degrees all have one thing in common – math skills.” Moreover it states “The tech fields are what’s driving salaries and offers, and the top students are faring quite well.” “Math is the crux of who gets paid,” said Ed Koc, director of research at the National Association of Colleges and Employers, which tracks college graduates’ offers. This is the direction that the world is heading, yet African Americans are still squabbling about the location of Wal-Mart in certain communities because it will bring “economic development.” In addition to this, our youth are dropping out of schools like the schools are the plague. And quietly, the number of “job readiness” programs has proliferated greatly. Just think about this – many people are so unskilled that they have to take classes to become “job ready,” and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what kinds of jobs will be available to them. Yet, people continue to lament the unemployment numbers and expect miracles wherein society is supposed to hold back progress in order to employ people who have not prepared themselves adequately. In today’s economy, even those who are prepared are finding themselves out of work, and many of them are looking for jobs in which they are “over qualified.” This will push those at the bottom, the least skilled, further into the mire of poverty and despair. Immigration reform is adding to this situation, with a lot of immigrants taking the grunt jobs that used to be the domain of unskilled African Americans. Let’s face it – everyone can’t be a highly paid rapper, dancer, singer, or baller. And even those who do make it to the top economically in these fields often look to clothing franchises when they start businesses. They tend to eschew the technical arena. Where are our scientists? Our engineers? Though there are undoubtedly African Americans who excel in these fields, they are not the super stars in the Black community. Our youth, for the most part, don’t aspire to careers that require math and science. And as long as this situation prevails, the bottom of the economic barrel will be the chief domain of African Americans for the foreseeable future. If we want to change this situation, the attitude toward education, and especially, technical education, must be transformed. There is no other way. 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR AAIA Predicts Consumer Backlash on “Cash for Clunkers” Dear Editor: As new car dealerships ramp up advertising to attract motorists to the showroom using “Cash for Clunkers” as an incentive, we anticipate a consumer backlash once reality replaces the hype and car owners realize that “Cash for Clunkers” is nothing more than a clever slogan for a program to spend $1 billion of our tax dollars to fund a government subsidized vehicle trade-in to help new car dealers sell cars. Consumers will soon learn that they are simply trading in their vehicle and will still have to jump through all of the hoops to qualify for and purchase a new vehicle. The much heralded fuel efficiency and environmental benefits of purchasing a new vehicle could easily be achieved through better maintenance of an existing vehicle or trading up to a newer used vehicle. Any savings from improved miles per gallon will be lost from the costs involved in destroying and disposing of the “clunkers.” We continue to strongly oppose “Cash for Clunkers” because it prematurely destroys vehicles with many more years of useful life, denying con-

sumers more affordable used vehicle options. Sincerely, Kathleen Schmatz President & CEO Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA)

BEYOND THE RHETORIC

It’s Time for a Big Political Flushing By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist When I was in the corporate world the term “upgrade” carried serious consequences. Production and sales would be down and new enthusiasm and morale was needed to turn things around. When headquarters would call in the managers and state it is time to upgrade our field staff we had

Harry C. Alford

no alternative but to agree and begin the “slashing.” Through upfront terminations, attrition and warnings, a new workforce would begin forming, replacing the stale and nonproductive workers.

This freshening would usually be successful. It works pretty much like a professional athletic team. You have to keep the human chemistry fresh. By doing so, collective motivation and high energy kicks in. The results are usually positive. This is just what we need to do with our elected officials. Right now, we have a group of mayors, city council members, state legislators, congress persons and US senators that are collectively stale, pompous and nonresponsive to the needs of the American people. No segment suffers worse from this fact than the African-American community which votes like blind sheep when it comes to elections. We keep the same persons in their elected positions regardless of their performance. What we need is a complete “upgrade” at all levels. Let us stop waiting on an indictment to freshen the personnel ranks that are supposed to serve us. About 25 percent of our elected officials show a fresh leadership approach. The other 75 percent needs to go and I mean now! This is a call for all talented people with the desire and capability to lead to step forward and begin

the process of running a campaign. Whether you win coming out of the “shoots” or not it is time to get experienced with the process and keep trying until victory is yours. African-Americans are not genuinely represented by their elected officials. This is why we suffer unemployment at rates double the national average. This is why our cities and states are in financial ruin. This is why our schools are failing and our tax base is overloaded with new stadiums, airports and other debts that we cannot afford. People from the suburbs enjoy coming into our cities and watching their baseball and football teams in stadiums we paid for (taxes) but did not participate in the building process (jobs and contracts). They come in spend their money and not a penny hits our local banks or stores. We are being exploited like the colonies of old and the time has come to take these irresponsible elected officials and “flush” their careers down the toilet. We need more Obamas by the thousands. The old dingbats that get re-elected, many times without opposition, need to fall on their “swords” and let new talent

take on the immense problems we have. Let’s have mayors who understand taxation and economics. Let’s have state representatives who know that the government that governs least governs best (Thomas Jefferson). Let’s have congresspersons and U.S. senators who understand that the share of taxes you send to Washington should be the exact same share that comes back in the form of services and benefits. If your elected officials have been getting a government check but yet they are becoming wealthy, get rid of them. If unemployment in your area has not improved during the last two years, get rid of them. If Blacks continue to get locked up at alarming rates compared to their White counterparts, get rid of them. Get rid of them, if your roads are in disrepair and your schools are failing your children. Get rid of them if your taxes are going up and the services remain inferior. Get rid of them if new industry or major businesses are not locating in your communities. Elect new persons and fire the old, inferior guard with a vengeance. Register to vote, educate yourself on the choices and “upgrade” for a

better world. Flush the waste down the toilet. A fine example of this situation is the state of California. It is an economic basket case. The population is 54 percent minority but minorities don’t get 5 percent of the business. It is 12 percent of the national population but it holds 32 percent of the national welfare load. It is exploitative from top to bottom and the people of California need to kick out practically every elected official they currently have. Flush them down the toilet and get in a new, fresh, educated and motivated group of young leaders who demonstrate a commitment to a new day. If they are old or have been around over the years, then they are the problem. If they receive big money from unions, insurance companies or other special interests please consider them the “Devil” and act accordingly. MAKE THAT CHANGE! Michael Jackson's Secret Friendship with Louis Farrakhan By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist While praising the musical talent of Michael Jackson, I have been critical of him both in life and in death, especially his efforts to alter his physical appearance. As my friend Thomas N. Todd has insightfully observed, Michael says it doesn’t matter whether you’re Black or White, but he’s not taking any chances. I still stand by my words. But after listening to Minister Louis Farrakhan at Maryam Mosque in Chicago on Sunday, I learned that Michael had been more racially sensitive than I had known. Farrakhan revealed that he had spoken with and met Michael many times over the years and that without fanfare, the entertainer donated $100,000 to the Million Man March. Farrakhan described his association with Michael as “a quiet relationship.” That’s an understatement from a man not known for using soft language. According to Minister Farrakhan, the quiet relationship was initiated in the 1980s with a telephone call from Johnnie Cochran, the famous attorney, The Chicago Crusader

“Johnnie Cochran called me,” Farrakhan stated. “He said, ‘I need you to talk to Michael. He’s really going through something.” That something was depression. Minister Farrakhan, himself a former entertainer, said he reminded Michael that blues and gospel had sprang from the depth of pain and that he should use his pain to become more creative. Farrakhan said he met Michael in different places, including Michael’s Neverland ranch in California. But it was a conversation the two of them had in New York that was the most revealing. “When we were doing the Million Man March, I met brother Michael in a hotel suite in New York,” Farrakhan stated. “I said, ‘Brother Michael, it’s one thing if a million women and girls cheer you. But when a million men cheer you, that’s significant.’ I said,’Michael what I would like for you to do is to come to the Million Man March and sing the song, ‘I’m Looking at the Man in the Mirror.’ “Michael was all for it, but after we left, somebody persuaded him differently. But Michael gave $100,000 to the Million Man March.” Describing their “quiet relationship,” Farrakhan disclosed, “He’d

call me on New Year’s Day, wish me well, send me a big bowl of fruit.” The Nation of Islam leader said he would typically end each conversation with, “I love you Michael” and the pop star would say, “I love you more.” Minister Farrakhan said he hoped his outspokenness would encourage Michael to become bolder. “I met with him in Florida,” Farrakhan recounted. “He and I had a private dinner. And I told him that I was going to the National Press Club and that I was going to talk to the world about the neo-conservatives, most of whom are Zionists. “I said Michael I’m going to step out and call attention to

I want you to see that when I step up, I’ll be around. And I’m around and I’m around and I’m around. And I’m alive and I’m getting stronger day by day.” In his speech titled, “The Crucifixion of Michael Jackson,” Farrakhan did not gloss over Michael defacing his face. “At 10, he was Black with a Black face, a broad nose, thick lips,” Farrakhan reminded the overflow audience. “Somebody told Michael, somebody told my brother he wasn’t good looking. Somebody told you the same thing. So, you began to hate the way God made you. But you don’t have no money to fix it.” Farrakhan said, “Michael went from Black at 10 years old to White in his 40s.” However, Michael’s looks were deceiving, according to Farrakhan. “You saw Michael’s color going from Black to White,” Farrakhan said. “That’s the outside. But the inside of Michael was going from White to Black.” Exhibit A on Sunday were the lyrics to “They Don’t Care About Saturday, August 1, 2009

Summoning up his past as an entertainer, Farrakhan bellowed: Skin head, dead head Everybody gone bad Situation, aggravation Everybody allegation In the suite, on the news Everybody dog food Bang bang, shot dead Everybody’s gone mad All I wanna say is that They don’t really care about us All I wanna say is that They don’t really care about us Beat me, hate me You can never break me Will me, thrill me You can never kill me Jew me, sue me Everybody do me Kick me, kike me Don’t you black or white me Farrakhan, who is roundly criticized for being anti-Semitic by Jews – a charge he vehemently denies --- noted that under pressure, Michael was forced to remove the “Jew me, sue me” line. There are far too many African people in this country who think what is good for other people

Dr. Conrad Worrill should be good for us. Nothing could be farther from the truth. We can only determine what is good for us by reestablishing Black Nationalist thinking and developing a Black Nationalist program of action. This is the missing link to the liberation of African people in America. Let us briefly review the development and impact of Black Nationalism in America. Black Nationalism is a tradition that emerged in the early nineteenth-century among those Black leaders who understood the need for African people in America to develop a national entity as the only solution for Black people in North America, Latin America, or the Caribbean. These nineteenth-century Black Nationalist leaders such as Denmark Vessey, Nat Turner, David Walker, Henry Highland Garnet, James T. Holly, Martin R. Delany, Pap Singleton, Edwin McCabe, and Henry McNeal Turner understood that African people in America were a “nation within 6

a nation” and should organize to collectively struggle for the liberation of Black people in this country and throughout the world. During this era there were some Black Nationalist leaders before, and after the Civil War, who led movements for people of African ancestry to leave this country and establish a homeland somewhere else. These proposals included Africa, Canada, and the Caribbean. Other Black Nationalist leaders led movements for Black people to control the towns where they lived and others who led movements to the western region of this country to establish all Black towns in Kansas and Oklahoma. The core of this Black Nationalist tradition has been to defeat and overthrow the system of white supremacy, seize control of land (somewhere) and to achieve self determination for the oppressed Black masses. The Black Nationalist tradition has always been opposed to integrations, assimilation, and accommodation as a solution to the problems of people of African ancestry in America. In this regard, Black Nationalist tradition has rejected the strategy and tactics of appealing to the morality of white people and their white supremacy system. Black Nationalists have been historically clear that people in power don’t teach powerless people how to get power. And they certainly don’t give power away, even though, when challenged, they may give up some concessions. As Black Nationalism emerged in the twentieth-century, the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey and the establishment of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) and the African Communicates League (ACL) became the leading spokesman for Black Nationalist ideas and organizing. Garvey used his varied skills to become one of our true twentieth-century freedom fighters. Garvey arrived in Harlem, New York on March 16, 1916. By 1919, Garvey was well established as the President General of the UNIA/ACL that had membership of over three million people with more than three hundred branches in the United States. Perhaps Garvey’s greatest con-

tribution to the upliftment of our people, through Black Nationalism, was his ability to find a formula for organizing African people around the African principle: the greatest good for the greatest number. This was reflected in the First International Convention of the Negro Peoples of the World, in Madison Square Garden, in 1920. Over twenty thousand Black people from all over the world witnessed the choosing of Red, Black, and Green as the colors of the Provisional Government. In this context, Garvey and the UNIA/ACL had established an economic arm, the Negro Factories Corporation, with cooperative stores, restaurants, steam laundry ships, tailor shops, dressmaking shops, millinery stores, a doll factory to manufacture Black dolls and a publishing house. Also, Garvey formed a Steamship Corporation. The Black Nationalist tradition was continued in the twentiethcentury through the Nation of Islam and the Honorable Elijah Muhammad who utilized many of the Garvey and UNIA/ACL organizing tactics and strategies. It was during the 1960s Black Power explosion that the Black Nationalist tradition reemerged through the influence of Malcolm X who adopted Black Nationalism as the political philosophy, economic and social philosophy of the organization of Afro American Unity in 1964 after he left the Nation of Islam. Finally, the Black Nationalist tradition, today, is spearheaded through the African Centered Education Movement. The mass acceptance of Kwanzaa, African Liberation Day, Buy Black Campaigns, the Reparations Movement, and Controlling Our Own Communities Campaigns are all part of the ongoing Black Nationalist tradition. Without vigorous Black Nationalist thinking and an aggressive Black Nationalist program of action, we will continue to chase false dreams created by our oppressors. We must put an end to this! Once Black Nationalism is understood by all Black people, it will be the foundation upon which the true liberation of people of African ancestry in America will take place.

By Maurice A. Clayton Throughout the Christian World you’ll find that in countries that have Christians who speak the name of our Lord Jesus for far and other reasons that you’ll find in European countries refer to our Lord by the name “Christ.” No disrespect, it’s just that way. Now the reasons may be different when calling on his name in any fashion. Those Christians are pulled closer… You can surely expect that the Europeans, regardless of where they are will pull out the ChristoEuropeans, regardless of where they are will pull out the “Christ” name when stress and fear is the “fear factor is near or great joy.” People of color find themselves shielded by the name of our Lord, Jesus when fear or joy comes to the forefront of their minds. Win the lottery Jesus gets his share of the pot and assured promise that the next big win will be followed by a promise that others will be helped and the church will get their share of the tidings. You can bet that whoever is the winner of some kind of financial winnings will be surrounded by the name of Jesus and should remember that as you rejoice do not forget to give unto Ceasar what is Ceasar’s and give unto God that which is God’s. times but selfishness in the other direction. If Jesus arrives at your house during good times you can bet that you will call upon him during bad times along with hard times. Oh yeah. Then there is the pre-emptive strike of calling upon Jesus if there is a possibility that you might be the winner of a large lotto winning. One you know surely that Jesus had something to do with the event. And if things go bad you hear “Oh Jesus help us” …and you better not curse Him if things go the other way. But nevertheless he will understand. Whatever, you don’t remember, that even the Angels are around you all the time. God bless you.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Continued from page 4) I believe in my heart that each and every member of the City Council is working hard every day for their constituents, but I also believe that there is a terrible disparity in the City of Chicago between the “Haves” and “Have Nots.” We must ALL work together to better understand that our job must be to erase the disparity by improving the quality of life for ALL Chicagoans. It’s wrong that over 400,000 residents of our City do not have access to affordable, high quality produce, the day creating the rapid escalation of Obesity, Diabetes and Heart Disease and causing our health care costs to sky rocket. It’s wrong not to encourage the creation of every new job possible. It’s also wrong to send our constituents to the suburbs to shop where our tax dollars go to creating a better quality of life for other municipalities. Our tax dollars are needed in our neighborhoods to help keep Chicago’s economy as strong as possible.

I encourage my colleagues to come to my Ward and see what you have helped to create. Talk to the employees at the Wal-Mart. Let them tell you how pleased many of them are to have worked hard and been promoted – a number are already in management training. Let them tell you how they believe that for the first time in many of their lives they have an opportunity to better themselves and the lives of their families. I have faith that ultimately my colleagues will understand that in these trying times our first priority must be to do everything we can to give every Chicagoan hope by creating jobs and developing opportunities. Please support Alderman Howard Brookins in his quest to respond to the wishes of his constituents who overwhelmingly support the building of the Wal-Mart in the 21st ward and the jobs, tax revenues and economic development it will bring. Thank You. Emma Mitts, Alderman 37th Ward The Chicago Crusader

That’s what I’m talking about, as soon as we (Black folk) do something the rules change or we get caught. ANOTHER BURR OAK-GATE? A lot of folks descended on Mt. Glenwood Cemetery after word came that a human bone was found uncovered. All around the country breaths were being held, while hoping that this would not be another Burr Oak-Gate. So far the only other incidents have included missing tombstones. The question is: if the tombstone is missing, how will families know if their loved ones are buried where they are supposed to be buried? I suggest that all of the cemeteries better tidy up their records cause all eyes is on ALL of the cemeteries these days. -Ima-

MICHAEL VICK DESERVES A CHANCE! Ima is always rooting for the underdog (no pun intended) and in this case I say Michael Vick deserves a chance to return to football. He paid his debt to society and besides Ima likes the way he looks. He is one fine Black specimen of a man, and he looks like Ima would fit right in those big muscular arms. . . (Oh sorry readers, Ima got carried away.) But back to the subject at hand, I hope he learned his lesson and those folks who want to further chastise him would mind their own business and help us revive the old-time virtue that once punished you can be redeemed

Do not make any sudden moves that could cause the policeman to get nervous and his drawn gun to be fired . . . But who would have thought a cripple, over 50-year-old man would be subjected to handcuffs and taken to jail when he could prove he lived at the address that the police thought he had broken into? So Ima was surprised as h . . . So there Ima said it. I ain’t skeered! I guess the President carries the Harvard connection to the highest degree. Ima knew that is good way to get hired at the White House and such, but I didn’t know Ima would have to have a degree from Harvard to get a play about everything else. NEWS

Rae Lewis-Thornton: The Face of AIDS By George E Curry NNPA Special Contributor On January 4, 1987, northbound Amtrak Train #94, en route from Washington, D.C. to Boston, slammed into a set of Conrail locomotives in Chase, Md., 18 miles northeast of Baltimore, killing 16 people and injuring 175 others. At the time, it was the deadliest accident in Amtrak’s history. But many people were not acting like it and that troubled Rae Lewis-Thornton, then 24 years old. “There were reports on television about how there were blood shortages because we knew that you could get HIV through blood,” recalled Lewis-Thornton, who was working at the time as a field organizer in Washington for the National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy (SANE) “People were saying, ‘Oh, no, I’m afraid to donate blood because I think I’m going to get HIV.’ I thought, ‘How silly,’ so I asked my boss if I could organize a blood drive.” The request was granted and the young organizer got tested along with her activist colleagues. “About three months later, I was coming home from a late day, a 12-hour day, and there was this letter from the Red Cross. In fact, I didn’t even open the letter up. I just threw it on the counter, went about my evening and at some point before the night was over, I went through the mail and opened

the letter. I had assumed it was a thank-you letter and it was a letter that said, ‘Something is wrong with the blood you just donated. Would you please call.” Lewis-Thornton did call but got only a recording. She called again from work the next morning and was urged to come into the Red Cross office. “The entire meeting took five minutes,” Lewis-Thornton stated. “She said to me, ‘The blood that you donated tested positive for the HIV antibody.’ And I didn’t have a lot to say. And I remember this woman saying to me, ‘Are you okay?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ She said, ‘Are you sure?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I have HIV.’” But it was what the Red Cross staffer said next that stuck in Lewis-Thornton’s mind. “She said, ‘Well, you’ve been tested for the HIV antibody – it doesn’t mean you have AIDS. You only have HIV. You may never get AIDS.’” She gave Lewis-Thornton a telephone number to enroll in a HIV trial at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). “I remember walking out of that Red Cross, that massive white building, walking down those stairs saying, ‘Okay, God. I only have HIV. I can handle this. Don’t ever let me get AIDS.’” Just as she had a sense of urgency to respond to the train crash in Maryland, Lewis-Thornton felt a greater urgency to inform the man she was dating at

RAE LEWIS-THORNTON has been living with HIV/AIDs more than half of her life. Credit: George E. Curry/NNPA the time, a minister attending graduate school at American University in Washington. She had washed his clothes and they had agreed that he would stop by her apartment that night to pick them up. “The moment he walked into the door, I said to him, ‘I donated blood a few months back. I went to the Red Cross today and they told me that my blood tested positive for HIV.’ And he said, ‘Excuse me?’ He had not been in my house for two minutes. It was a sense of urgency. I couldn’t delay it. He needed to know, I needed to get it out. I needed to tell him. I said, ‘I have HIV.’ He said, ‘Stop playing.’ I said, ‘No, I have HIV.’ He said to me, ‘You b——‘

I said, ‘Excuse me?’ He said, “You b——‘ I said, ‘We used condoms, so you don’t have HIV. I haven’t given it to you.’ “And in that hurt, I still did what I had to do. I gave him the telephone number that they had given me at the Red Cross to refer him to NIH where he could go to get tested. I gave him that number and he snatched the paper out of my hand and he took his clothes and he walked out of my house and that was the last time I’ve seen him.” Speaking slowly, Lewis-Thornton recounted, “That was the first sign for me that the HIV carries a lot of stigma with it and it was the first lesson in keeping the secret.” By her own admission, LewisThornton was in denial, knowing that she was HIV-infected but clinging on to a thread of hope: She was only HIV positive, she didn’t have AIDS. Meanwhile, she was a walking contradiction. “It was almost like I was living this dual life,” she said. “The secret was wearing me down emotionally. Here I am, an activist, I’m fighting for people’s rights. But I’m just halted. I can’t fight for my own rights as a woman with HIV.” She continued, “When I eventually started taking medicine, AZT came along at some point, maybe a few years after. I would take all my medicine and I would take the label off the medicine and tear the label up, flush it in

the toilet stool and threw the pill case away – that’s just how deep the secret was. It was weighing me down. It was the thing that was killing me quicker. I said it often: the secret was killing me quicker than the disease.” Lewis-Thornton transitioned from HIV to AIDS in 1992. “It wasn’t that the doctor told me that I had AIDS that took me from my denial,” Lewis-Thornton explained. “It was that AIDS showed me what it was made of. And that was the thing that took me from my denial: When AIDS stood up in my body and said, ‘I’m here and I’m here to stay.’” To make sure that she stayed around, Lewis-Thornton took 23 pills a day. And that’s just the beginning. “Two years ago, I had to take medicine that I injected twice a day in my stomach,” LewisThornton said. “That, by far, has been the most difficult medicine for me to take. It’s a twice a day injection. When you inject, the injection itself hurts, physically hurts. And once you inject, you get a nodule that grows. The nodule can be from the size of a penny to the size of the bottom of Coke bottle. “The nodule stays from one to seven days. You can’t inject it into the same nodule; you have to go to another site. So, I’d get two nodules a day. Sometimes when I was on the medicine, I couldn’t inject it in my stomach because I (Continued on page 16)

I must be honest in telling you that I am emotionally affected, and to some of the members of my family this has been devastating and overwhelming because there are family members who have headstones that can’t possibly be located.” Others told of how they felt after knowing they had spent thousands of dollars ensuring their loved ones wishes were met only to find out later they had been duped. Roxie Williams, 44, said she hasn’t been able to sleep since the scandal first hit the headlines earlier this month. She spoke of the emotional pain she suffered when she encountered what should have been the gravesite of her father only to discover it was nothing more than the grass and said she is committed to finding justice for his memory. “We paid a mint to bury my father like the king he was,” Williams said. “But all that was there was grass. thing done about this criminal act! You have raped us, you have robbed us. And you have nothing to say but, ‘sorry, we have lost your loved one’s remains,’” said Williams during her emotional testimony. Cong Rush said the hearing wasn’t political grandstanding, but rather the hearing was a meaningful, important process to creating change within the industry. He told the press gathered after the hearing that he would push for the Bereaved Consumers Bill Of Rights. Seven years ago when a scandal at a Georgia crematorium made national headlines, Congress promised sweeping changes of the industry, but that never materialized. Rush said Congress must act now on this second opportunity while the issue is in the public eye. “We’re not having this for some type of show,” said committee chairman Rep. Bobby Rush. “This day will make a difference.” But Rush will face fierce opposition in trying to regulate the industry. Harvey Lapin, an attor-

ney with the Illinois Cemetery and Funeral Home Association, said there are state laws in place to protect cemeteries against the crimes that allegedly took place at Burr Oak. He and other opponents say the vast majority of cemeteries nationwide are nonprofit or church-operated beyond the legal scope of federal oversight and that placing national rules on the rest would be unfair and costly to the same consumers Rush wants to protect. “There’s no question about it, the prices would increase because they’d be regulated and the others wouldn’t,” Lapin said. Lapin’s assessment wasn’t lost on committee member Rep. Danny K. Davis (D-Il.), who wondered aloud if increasing regulation of the cemetery industry would result in increased costs for grieving families. Davis said he is undecided if federal regulation is needed or if better enforcement of state and local laws is needed. However, a local consumer advocacy group leader believes without regulation, there will be

more incidents like the ones at Burr Oak. Joshua Slocum who serves as the executive director of the Funeral Consumers Alliance told committee members he wasn’t surprised at the Burr Oak scandal because of the current climate in the industry. “While the Federal Trade Commission has set minimum standards for truthful dealing for funeral homes, the federal government has turned a blind eye to graveyards,” Slocum told the panel. “I wish I could say it’s surprising what happened at Burr Oak, but it’s not. There needs to be a culture of accountability that is woefully lacking,” he said. Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-Il.) represents constituents in Chicago and the northern suburbs. She said due to how many cemeteries are now being owned by corporations that aren’t local, federal regulations may become necessary. “Cemeteries are going national, in terms of their ownership, so it makes sense that there are some federal standards,” she said.

Rush said there is also a personal loss that can’t be replaced at this point and that is the peace of mind relatives had when they saw their loved ones lowered into graves only to now find out they were removed. He said it is time to stand up to those who don’t want to see change and fight for those who are no longer here to speak for themselves and their surviving family members. “The lobbyists aren’t going to rule the day, the consumers are going to rule the day,” Rush said after the hearing, which was held on the 25th floor. Dwight Robinson appreciated that Rush spoke up for families. He said those who lost loved ones to violent acts feel like what has happened at Burr Oak has victimized their loved ones again when they should be safe and at peace. “The acts of violence and indifference to the deceased at Burr Oak were also acts of violence and indifference to those families that are still alive,” Robinson said. 9

EDUCATION Internship program brings policy-making process to life for students New York Life Foundation Funds Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Internship Program The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc., (CBCF) welcomed 45 undergraduate students from across the country to its Summer Congressional Internship Program at the end of the Spring 2009 semester. The students spent the next two months working in a Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) member office where they had the opportunity to offer policy development and analysis on a number of issues, create a community action plan and develop a professional portfolio. In addition, they had daily interaction with several Congressional committees and staff. CBCF created the Legislative Internship Program in 1976 to address the underrepresentation of Black professional staff on Capitol Hill. In 1983, the CBCF restructured the Legislative Internship Program into the Congressional Internship Program – a summer internship program for undergraduate students and the Congressional Fellows Program for graduate level students. Today, under the Leadership Institute for Public Service, interns

participate in the fall and spring semesters along with the summer. Since its inception, more than 1,200 students have participated in the program. Adam Miguest of the Bronzeville community, a student at Illinois State University, served in Congressman Bobby Rush’s (D-1) D.C. office during the Summer ’09 session. The program is described as one of the top preparatory experiences in Washington, D.C. “CBCF’s mission and much of our reputation for success are built on our strong internship program,” said Elsie L. Scott, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer for CBCF. “We are known throughout the nation for our intensive nine-week program that provides college undergraduates with a behind-the-scenes look into the democratic process. Through experiential learning in the office of a CBC member, the program prepares the next generation to be decision makers in the policy making process.” As part of the closing ceremonies of the program participants attended a reception held at New York Life Insurance Company. At the reception, the interns were given the opportunity to ask a panel of African-American executives from New York Life questions about their personal

COMMUNITY

Seniors strut their stuff in 1st Annual Wheelchair Parade in Bronzeville It is a beautiful day in the neighborhood when the elders of the community come together to march in a parade that honors them. The beautiful residents of Pioneer Gardens “A Miracle on 38th” Street at King Drive collaborated to participate in the threequarter mile parade, some walking, some travelling in decorated wheelchairs. Nearly 40 wheelchair users dressed in personalized t-shirts and packed full with enthusiasm assembled at 4445 S. King Drive to make their festive move northbound to their assisted living facil-

ity at 3800 South King Drive. The facility, owned and operated by South Park Baptist Church, houses 120 residents needing some assistance with daily living, 23 residents are wheelchair users. Director of Outreach and Community Affairs Deloris MeBain came up with the idea of a wheelchair parade after recognizing that July 26th was the anniversary of the Americans with Disability Act and that her residents were vibrant and happy and were wheelchair users who did not get much recognition. Her concept was supported by Rev. Dr. E.R. Williams, Sr.,

pastor of South Park Baptist Church, owners of Pioneer Gardens; Alderman Patricia “Pat” Dowell (3rd); IL. Senator Mattie Hunter (3rd); the residents/staff of Pioneer Gardens and community residents along with several area businesses who came out to cheer on the parade participants. The parade was led by the world renowned South Shore Drill Team and Performing Arts Ensemble. This historic occasion included a formal program on the front patio of Pioneer Gardens— complete with food, fun activities, and raffle prizes for participants.

I can’t stop talking about it.” A youngster in the crowd Michael Lawson, 69 said, “It was a good turnout of participants and of outside guests. I’d give it an ‘A’.” Alderman Pat Dowell, who was a grand marshal said, “It was an excellent way to acknowledge and celebrate residents in their golden years in the 3rd Ward. They were spotlighted in a festive way.”

Golden seniors wore red, white, and blue in a true display of patriotic fashion. “I thought it was fabulous!” exclaimed participant Joyce Pope, age 85. Some onlookers mistook the parade for another event. William Martin, age 71 explained, “It was funny to think that some people thought we were in a wheelchair race and asked me what number did I come in at the finish line. I would highly suggest another parade for wheelchair users next year.”

Orphan

By Raymond Ward Entertainment Editor A GLORIOUS DEBUT: New author Kathryn Stockett has made a glorious debut onto the literary scene with her first novel, “The Help” (G.P. Putnam’s Sons $ 24.95), a book you will not be able to put down once you begin, about three ordinary women who make one extraordinary step. Twenty-two year old Skeeter has just returned home after graduating from ‘Ole Miss. She may have a degree, but it is 1962, Mississippi, and her mother will not be happy till Skeeter has a ring on her finger. Skeeter would normally find solace with her beloved maid Constantine, the woman who raised her, but Constantine has disappeared and no one will tell Skeeter where she has gone. Aibileen is a Black maid, a wise, regal woman raising her seventeenth white child. Something has shifted inside her after the loss of her own son, who died while his bosses looked the other way. She is devoted to the little girl she looks after, though she knows both their hearts may be broken. Minny, Aibileen’s best friend, is short, fat, and perhaps the sassiest woman in Mississippi. She can cook like nobody’s business, but she can’t mind her tongue, so she’s lost yet another job. Minny finally finds a position working for someone too new to town to know her reputation. But her new boss has secrets of her own. Seemingly as different from one another as can be, these women will nonetheless come together for a clandestine project that will put them all at risk. And why? Because they are suffocating within the lines that define their town and their times. And sometimes lines are made to be crossed. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women—-mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends—-view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, “The Help,” is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don’t. FUNNY MAN!: If you want a laugh-filled night, well, get ready because The Paramount Theatre in Aurora will welcome comedy great Paul Rodriguez to the stage on Friday, September 18th at 8:00 PM. After 30 years in stand-up, comedian Paul Rodriguez shows no signs of stopping. This Latin “King of Comedy,” is funny, charismatic and engaging and he knows how to connect with an audience and keep them on the edge of their seats. A pioneer of self-deprecating Latino humor, Rodriguez was the first Mexican-American comedian to appear on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and to host his own TV show. His likeable personality and Cosby-esque gift for storytelling keeps fans coming back for more. His resume includes starring roles and featured appearances in over 30 films and countless television series and specials. His first big break came while doing comedy warm-ups for Norman Lear’ s show Glor ia. Lear ultimately wrote and developed a weekly series for Paul, a.k.a. Pablo. Recently he had the opportunity to work with the legendary Clint Eastwood in the Warner Brothers film Bloodwork. Paul was the executive producer and star of the comedy concert film, The Original Latin Kings of Comedy and his latest film projects include A Cinderella Story starring Hilary Duff, Badasss directed by Mario Van Peebles, Clo ud Nine starring B urt Clint Eastwood Re yno lds and The Wor ld’s Fastest Indian starring Sir Anthony Hopkins. Tickets for Paul Rodriguez at the Paramount Theatre are $39.50 and $49.50 and can be purchased at the Paramount Theatre Box Office, by telephone at 630-896-6666 or at any TicketMaster ticket outlet. Orphan is a movie that brings back memories of the good old days when the Bad Seed and Damien were bad, but the less than angelic lead in this movie, Esther, is a crazy-like-a-fox demonic, conniving, manipulating “run-for-cover-and-hide-the knives” deranged and possessed 9year-old girl. Esther is adopted into the Coleman family that has seen its share of heartache with the mother, Kate, played by Vera Farmiga, losing a child, recovering from an alcohol addiction, and raising a special needs younger girl named Max who is deaf. The preteen boy in the family, Daniel, is your typical (well in some families) hyperactive, insolent youngster, but although he has his own toys and takes up much of his time with his buddies, he still doesn’t take too kindly to the family’s new addition. The father, John, played by Peter Sarsgaard, tends to have blinders on his eyes and just can’t seem to grasp what the mother begins to envision during Esther’s first couple of weeks in the house—Esther comes with baggage that seems to embrace the adage that when trouble comes, Esther isn’t too far behind. Even Daniel, who can hold his own, even up against his mom and dad, is harassed and afraid of Esther, once she decides to come for him. This movie definitely isn’t one for the kids, as it turns very dark. I even feel for the kids in the movie, because they are forced to deal with adult themes, and all the arsenal that Esther uses to carry out her plots against the family—knives, guns and hammers. CCH Pounder stars as Sister Abigail, the nun at the orphanage who introduces the Colemans to Esther. The parents fall in love with the young, nicely dressed and comported young girl. Esther, played by Isabelle Fuhrman, has a great eye for drawing and also knows how to play a mean piano, even though she lies at the onset and says she doesn’t know how to play. When word finally spreads that Esther’s past is hard to determine, she decides to eliminate CCH Pounder, as she leaves the family home. But Max is with her, and she terrorizes and threatens that if Max tells anyone, she will also go to jail for the murder. Next, Esther strategically hides the evidence in Daniel’s tree house, which later turns into an inferno at Esther’s hands, as she

THE UGLY TRUTH A Review by Bonnie DeShong Sacramento’s local channel 2television station is dying the death of a dog in the ratings. The anchors are a married couple that isn’t connecting, the weather guy is overweight, and Abby Richter (Katherine Heigl) is a control freak, desperate to find love, but the very good, award-winning producer of the show. As the ratings drop into the toilet the station looks to Mike Chadway (Gerard Butler), a local cable TV personality who hosts an independent show called “The Ugly Truth.” Mike is one of those “know it all” guys who give a straightforward viewpoint on male/female relationships. He is hired by channel 2 and Abby, not liking it one bit, becomes his producer. Knowing that Abby wants to find love, and knowing that she doesn’t like him or his being on the sta-

tion, Mike makes a bet. If she uses his advice to catch a guy and it works, she will have to give her all to producing the show. If his advice fails, he will quit. I don’t have to go further, you know the rest. I like “Chick-Flicks.” I was even looking forward to this one (I can still picture Gerard Butler’s body in the film “300”); however, I must say I was quite disappointed in this film. The film is rated “R” because of all the talk about different forms of sex, and the too numerous times the various names of the female and male anatomy is mentioned. After awhile you forget about the somewhat story line and all you hear are words that begin with C, P, M, and so on. Don’t spend your money on this one. Wait for it to come on Cable, but only after you have seen every other “Chick-Flick” that may come on cable first.

SPRITUALLY SPEAKING

Youthful Praise is resting on His promise with their new release Features Pastor Shirley Caesar, Myron Butler, and Dorinda Clark-Cole

James “JJ” Hairston and Youthful Praise, the inspired pen and iconic sound that introduced such gospel hits as “Awesome God” and “Incredible God, Incredible Praise” is sure to set the gospel world afire with their highly anticipated release, RESTING ON HIS PROMISE (Light Records/Evidence Gospel), hitting stores September 1st. Youthful Praise’s fifth album not only offers the trademark east coast choir sound, expansive melodies and inspired lyrics for which Youthful Praise has set the standard but also offers the contagious energy of driving rock infused tunes and plenty of foot stompin’ rhythm to satisfy the traditional gospel music fan. “JJ” Hairston’s ability to craft tunes with timeless melodies and timely lyrics is aptly demonstrat-

ed by the title track “Resting In His Promise” The gentle reminder that we are children of an all sufficient father will “put your mind at ease” and draw you into His rest as Bishop Eric McDaniels assures us of God’s promise “You’re covered, don’t you worry.” The words of “Hear Me Lord” epitomize the theme of RESTING ON HIS PROMISE: “Every miracle, in your word is preceded by a sound… I need a miracle, so I’ll make my own sound right now.” And what a beautiful sound it is. Whether it be the triumphant song of praise proclaimed in “What A Mighty God We Serve,” the intimate worship of “Close to You” or the emphatic testimony shared in “You Can Make It,” Youthful Praise gives unrestrained expression to the heartfelt emotions of the believer. James “JJ” Hairston has once again called upon his friends to

All I saw was an old mini van with two flat tires.’”

The many free health services included cholesterol and glucose screenings, nutritional counseling, heart and stroke risk assess-

Participants received hot dogs for lunch and snacked on healthful treats such as apples and oranges. The health services were complemented beautifully by the fest’s tribute to spirituality. Several local gospel choirs and praise dancers performed for the crowd, and the event culminated in a soulful celebration as gospel
