Clergy to Community:

Break Code of silence now! By J. Coyden Palmer A group of West Side ministers is urging the community to provide information about the person responsible for shooting six people outside a funeral service last week on west Madison Ave. The clergy say violence in Chicago has gotten completely out of hand and what used to be considered “sacred ground,” is now being discarded by gangs. In addition to offering a $1,000 reward, the group is urging the community to change their mindset about crime and relations with police officers to help stem violence in Chicago. “We are not afraid and we are here to save our community from our community. This is not an accurate representation of who we are,” said Rev. John Abercrombie. “If you are sick, have drug problems or economic issues, we’re pastors and we’re (Continued on page 3)

NEWS Chicago State University welcomes new president Dr. Wayne Watson Former City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) Chancellor Dr. Wayne Watson began his five-year term as the 19th President of Chicago State University on Monday, August 3, 2009. Dr. Watson brings strong leadership skills, dedication to quality education and an accomplished higher education background to enhance Chicago State University (CSU), a public, comprehensive, urban institution of higher learning located on the south side of Chicago. “I am honored to become the President of this historical institution and start the next phase of its evolution,” said Dr. Watson. “I will focus on providing educational guidance to enhance the student learning experience toward becoming global citizens. CSU is an educational urban oasis, a south side treasure with brilliant professors. The University is established, service oriented and can be driven as a world class educational leader for higher learning. The emphasis of my administration will be students first.” Northwestern University Alum Dr. Watson brings over 30 years of experience in post-secondary education to CSU, including several years in high-level administrative roles. As CCC’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Watson was

Madison St., in the South Austin neighborhood where a funeral was taking place for a self-admitted gang member. Police say a man walked up on foot and began firing at one man before just spraying bullets into the crowd outside the church. Witnesses were not cooperating with police, which, is something clergy members say is becoming a bigger problem by the day. “I want you to know that we need to cooperate with the police because this isn’t some sort of anarchy,” said Rev. Ira Acree of the L.E.A.D.E.R.’s Network, who called for the press conference. “Now is not the time to be silent,” Abercrombie said. “When crimes are being committed it is not the time to be silent. Silence is not always golden, at times it can be dangerous.” Reverend Marshall Hatch said it is difficult to turn in people who you know, especially if the individuals are family members, but the greater good is the good of the community. He said for far too long family members 2

Daley College, Harold Washington College, Harry S. Truman College, Ken nedy-King College, Malcolm X College, Olive-Harvey College and Wilbur Wright College. An experienced educational leader, Dr. Watson developed and maintained high-quality educational programs for CCC that served

more than 100,000 students annually and managed a $476.5 million budget and 6,700 full-time and part-time employees. Watson’s CCC track record includes but is not limited to increasing enrollment by 60%; obtaining the highest accreditation status (10 years) for all seven colleges; obtaining a Federal Grant, for predominately Black institutions, funding in the amount of $3.6 million for three of its institutions; improving relations with

unions, securing budget support and landmark labor contract agreements designed to provide a stronger revenue base due to more equitable funding opportunities before the Illinois General Assembly. “The CSU community strives for excellence in teaching, research, creative expression and community service and Dr. Watson is clearly the best person to lead CSU in the years ahead,” said Rev. Leon D. Finney, Jr., Ph.D., chairman, CSU Board of Directors. “He brings to CSU an outstanding record as a teacher, academic and administrator, a commitment to students and civic responsibility with a reputation and proven track record of building and maintaining great relationships with unions, legislators, and acquiring higher education resources that will put CSU in the forefront amongst its competitors,” said Rev. Finney. Watson is currently teaching a graduate course at Northwestern University and has taught at a variety of institutions on topics such as Foundations of Education, Administrative Analysis and Budgeting and Finance. Watson has enjoyed significant success with board and committee memberships such as the Board Chair, School of Educa-

tion & Social Policy, Northwestern University; a member of the Board of Directors for American Association of Community Colleges (AACC); and Capital Campaign Leadership Committee for the Institute of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture. He has received numerous special honors and awards, published major papers, provided lectures and served as a commencement speaker on numerous occasions. In prior roles, Watson served as president at Kennedy-King College, interim president at Harold Washington College, vice-chancellor for academic affairs at City Colleges of Chicago, associate vice chancellor for City Colleges of Chicago, and vice president for instructional services at Malcolm X College. Dr. Wayne Watson earned his bachelor of arts degree in Education (1968), master of art in teaching degree in Social Science and Education (1970), and his Ph.D. in Education Administration (1972) from Northwestern University. “We have an incredibly qualified and capable new President, and we are all extremely excited to see him take this institution to the next level as the University continues its evolution,” said Dr. Finney.

He said it is time to put family members doing illegal things out of homes and turn them into the police. “You have a responsibility, even if it is a family member, to turn that information over to the police,” Hatch said. “There should be no hiding place for the shooters.” The Austin community has been hit hard by violence this summer. So much so, longtime residents are now considering seeking safety in other areas, including leaving Chicago all together. “I love Chicago with all my heart, but it’s getting worse and there don’t seem to be any solutions,” said Michelle Longs, a mother of four. “I mean you pay your property taxes and then you have to live with this violence every day. My friends who live in other parts of the country think I’m crazy for staying here, because unlike others, I do have more options. At this point I have to think about my kids’ safety more so than my personal love for Chicago.” Detectives have few leads in the case. They say the community’s help is desperately needed and

Blacks, Latinos optimistic about economy’s recovery: Study By La Risa Lynch Despite unemployment numbers in the double digits and high foreclosure rates, AfricanAmericans are optimistic the economy will soon turn around, found a survey conducted by a global banking institution. Citi, a global financial services company, released the findings of a consumer-sentiment survey of low-to-moderate incomes Blacks and Latinos during the National Urban League’s annual convention held here last week. The survey found that 82 percent of African-Americans and 75 percent of Latinos nationwide believe the economy will improve. In comparison, 67 percent of the respondents in the survey’s cross-ethnic sample believe the economy will improve. Additionally, the survey sampled consumer sentiment on Chicago’s economy. It also found a high level of optimism among Blacks (72 percent) and Latinos (81 percent). The survey also suggests that even with this optimism, African-Americans and Latinos are taking a cautious approach to their spending and their savings habits. Eric Eve, Citi’s senior vice president of global community relations, explained the survey was

Eric Eve done to quantify changing attitudes Citi customers expressed about the economy and their financial situation. “The heightened optimism, the increased conservative attitude towards spending, the diligence around financial planning and an increased focus on savings are big positives,” Eve said, noting that Blacks and Latinos are hard-

est hit by the recession The survey also found that 80 percent of Black respondents plan to take a more measured approach to spending, while another 80 percent have begun or will start a budget. Additionally, 84 percent plan to take a more active role in managing their finances, a position which is higher than the 76 percent of respondents in the

cross-ethnic sample. The survey also showed that 80 percent of Black respondents will or plan to save more, compared to 66 percent in the cross-ethnic sample. The online survey was conducted among 301 respondents, nationally including six major cities: New York, Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington D.C. The sample included individuals over 21years-old and have an income of at least $35,000. Additionally, the Chicago sample of Blacks and Latinos including respondents making between $25,000$50,000. Eve viewed the survey as hopeful in its partnerships with community organizations like the Urban League. He said the bank and UL has partnered for years to do financial literacy. “The survey data that we released today gives us hope that we are heading down the right track in providing financial education,” Eve said. “But we also understand that there is a lot more that needs to be done given the current crisis facing our communities.” A big part of Citi’s financial literacy is its money management curriculum which can be implemented in schools at any grade level. Churches and community groups can also implement the

curriculum, which focus on budget management and understanding credit. The curriculum can be accessed at www.financialeducation.citi.com. Eve noted that credit education is vital since so much of everyday life depends on it. “You can’t rent a car, can’t get on an airplane, can’t get a hotel. You can’t do anything today [without credit],” he said, adding that the pitfall to credit is using it wisely. Citi officials also discussed its mortgage foreclosure efforts. Citi has worked with several community groups to conduct borrower outreach events. These events allow homeowners that are 60 days delinquent on their mortgage to work with the bank to modify or reduce their loans. However Helen Hammond Redding, Citi’s community relations director for Illinois, noted that using community partners to reach out to homeowners facing foreclosure is critical. She said many homeowners think they have no option once they get a foreclosures notice. But Redding said that is not the case. She noted if homeowners are reached early, the bank can help them find a solution to keep their homes. “We don’t want to own real estate,“ Redding said.

Publishing industry and fans rocked by death of author E. Lynn Harris By J. Coyden Palmer The man who brought the issue of gay Black men pretending to be straight to the forefront of the American conscious has died. Author E. Lynn Harris suffered a heart attack last week in Los Angles. He was 54. He was found unconscious at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills and was pronounced dead at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Harris burst on the literary scene in 1994 with his riveting first novel “Invisible Life.” He would go on to pen 11 novels and was a frequent New York Times Best Seller. Harris’ subject matter turned off many in the Black community where many still believe the homosexual lifestyle is immoral. But Harris still had a large fan base of heterosexual fans who read his books for knowledge on the subject in an attempt to understand the lifestyle. Many African American women read his work because they found his stories entertaining and educational. Some like Desire Woods of Hyde Park said they were seeking answers after being burned in relationships by men who turned

out to be gay. “I had just gotten out of a three year relationship with a man who turned out to be bisexual and I was really hurt,” Woods said. “I didn’t know if I had done something wrong. Even though his books were fiction, I think they were very valuable in helping me to understand that many bisexual men are really gay men who haven’t yet accepted who they are for a variety of reasons and that it really had nothing to do with me.” Harris broke through ceilings in the publishing industry, which is why he was in Los Angeles last week meeting with Hollywood producers who were thinking about turning his novels into screenplays, according to his agent. Not since James Baldwin had an openly gay Black man done so well in the publishing industry. Harris’ writing style is what captivated many of his fans. Even if they were turned off by the graphic nature of how Harris described certain scenes in his novels, they were enthralled in the story itself. Raised in Arkansas, Harris graduated from the University of Arkansas where he was

the school’s first Black male cheerleader. He also was a visiting English professor at the University. A member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Harris had many friends across the nation. “For all of us this is just a mindnumbing loss,” wrote fellow writer and friend of, Rick Blalock

on his blog. “Even for those whose faith is strong and who are true believers, it is still hard to realize that Lynn’s life story was well written before he was born. Only the Master Writer knew when it would begin, how the chapters would evolve, and how—and when—it would end.” Saturday, August 8, 2009

Harris won numerous accolades and prizes for his work. In 1996, “Just as I Am” was awarded Blackboard’s Novel of the Year prize. In 1997, “If This World Were Mine” was nominated for a NAACP Image Award and won the James Baldwin Award for Literary Excellence. “Abide with Me,” “Any Way the Wind Blows,” and “A Love of My Own” were also nominated for NAACP Image Awards. In 2002 “Any Way the Wind Blows” won Harris his second Blackboard Novel of the Year prize, and “A Love of My Own” was recently named Blackboard Novel of the Year, making Harris the first author to receive back-to-back honors and to receive the prize a record three times. Keith Boykin, an author and friend, said Harris encouraged the African American community to talk openly about homosexuality. He said Harris opened the door on a subject many would have preferred stayed closed. “We have a ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy in the black community,” Boykin said. “E. Lynn Harris encouraged people to ask and to tell.” 3

OPINION

EDITORIAL INTERNET HATERS Anyone who has been reading news stories on the Internet lately has probably noticed an incredible amount of hatred spewing out of the mouths of many commentators. This hatred is pervasive, and usually boils down to race, no matter what the original topic was. And much of it is filled with such vitriol, that one can become concerned walking down the street, wondering whether this person or that person is one of those individuals filled with seething hatred. Hatred on a global level can be seen in the continuous talk about war, and the proliferation of them in spots all over the world. It is truly a case where we are not our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers. For example, there is a case brewing on the African continent where women are being whipped for wearing slacks! One brave soul, who is putting her life on the line in bringing this issue to a wider audience, was in court about wearing the improper clothing while others outside were flogged. This story, read by an ordinary person, would be heartwarming, but one commentator called the freedom fighter “ugly” and asked “…who she thought she was- Rosa Parks?” Another commented that she was so ugly that she shouldn’t be allowed to wear “revealing” clothing. The interesting thing about this is that they missed the obvious – people were being denied their rights and were actually beaten for wanting to wear clothing that they desired to wear. In another recent story, the leader of an African American sorority was accused of malfeasance. It was one of the eight original Black organizations, one that had its origins during the first part of the last century. Several commentators jumped on the woman’s personal appearance, called her ugly, and said a lot of other hateful things about her. The hatred escalated to a fever pitch, with a commentator finally saying that Black women are the ugliest women on the planet, and others agreed with that assertion! How base. It’s tempting to think that a lot of these individuals, hiding behind an electronic keyboard spewing their hatred, are misguided adolescents with nothing else to do. This is because, in addition to hatred, they are woefully ignorant. One commentator actually questioned the notion that Black people would have enough wherewithals to belong to sororities and fraternities. On second thought, however, it is not comforting to think that wild youth are the ones creating so much havoc on the Internet, because it portends things to come. If this is how they are thinking now, they might be even worse haters when they reach adulthood. And what does this say about their families? Whatever the case, whether these are adolescents or grown people, Internet hatred is becoming a real problem, and it points to a possible worsening of race relations that is reaching a boiling point. We hope cooler heads prevail. A luta continua. 4

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Protecting Black Farmers Dear Editor: Black farmers in the United States are disappearing. In the 1920s, there were approximately 900,000; today there are only 18,000, accounting for less than 1 percent of America's farmers. But the staggering 98 percent decline in Black farm ownership does not tell the whole story: when each farm closed, those farmers, their families and their employees all lost a way of life that had existed for generations. When I started the National Black Farmers Association in 1995, I, like quite a few farmers in my community, was on the brink of losing my farm. As a third-generation Black farmer, I wanted to save my own farm and preserve my heritage, but I also wanted to protect the first and oldest occupation for Black Americans. Today's Black farms primarily are small enterprises with particular needs for the crops we grow. Our productivity comes from our enterprise and hard work, aided by biotechnology innovations that help our crops tolerate certain herbicides and protect them

against insects. Biotechnology helps reduce labor costs by eliminating the need to use more labor-intensive farming methods, reducing pesticide use and insect problems; and increasing crop yields. Because no two crops are alike, having access to the best choice of biotechnology innovations is critical to meeting the challenge of feeding an ever-increasing world population. For most of the NBFA's history, racial discrimination was the biggest threat to the livelihood of Black farmers. More recently, however, anti-competitive conduct by monopolists and reduced competition for the biotechnology that we need has emerged as a major obstacle. Lack of choice in agricultural markets was a topic of discussion at the NBFA's recent Legislative Conference. One area we identified in which we desperately need more competition is for biotechnology used in seeds, because it currently is controlled by one company: Monsanto. Monsanto is the Microsoft of agriculture: the dominant company that controls the key biotechnology that all farmers need. The St. Louis-based company's recent lawsuit to block DuPont and Pioneer from introducing their new biotechnology with Monsanto's biotechnology

in soybeans is only one of the practices it has used to preserve its monopoly and attempt to intimidate customers and competitors. BEYOND THE RHETORIC

Fight the Bill; Not Congressman John Conyers By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist There is something going on right now that is plain “rot gut ugly.” I have never seen such a malicious attack on such a prestigious elected official. Radio magnate Cathy Hughes and others are attacking the Honorable John

Harry C. Alford Conyers in a very scandalous way. There is one ad that just maligns him in a vicious way and includes his family in the verbal attack. What has caused Ms.

Hughes to lead this attack? It is a Bill that Congressman John Conyers has introduced in the House of Representatives. Let’s talk about the Bill. The bill number is HR 848 and is also referred to as the Performance Rights Act. Presently, radio stations pay a royalty for playing records to the writer of the song. This bill would also make them pay whoever is singing the song also. Radio stations doing less than $1.25 million per year will be assessed a flat annual fee. In a time of financial difficulty this may be the tilting point for struggling radio stations. This added cost may end Black radio as we know it and that would be a tragedy. Besides Congressman Conyers there are, as of July 30, 2009, eight other democratic Congressional Black Caucus members sponsoring the Bill. The Congresspersons are Yvette D. Clarke (NY), Emanuel Cleaver (MO), Marcia L. Fudge (OH), Sheila Jackson-Lee (TX), Henry C. “Hank” Johnson (GA), Bennie G. Thompson (MS), Edolphus Towns (NY) and Diane E. Watson (CA). Eddie Bernice Johnson (TX) and Eleanor Holmes Norton

(DC) were sponsors, but when the mess hit the fan they withdrew their sponsorships on May 14 and June 11, respectively. In total there are 45 congressional sponsors – 41 Democrats and 4 Republicans. In the attack ads, Ms. Hughes calls out Congressmen Bobby Scott (VA) and Mel Watt (NC) but I find no evidence of them sponsoring this Bill. Why is this happening? The world economy is in a state of uneasiness. The entertainment industry is no exception. Both the broadcasters and the music companies are losing revenues like never before. They are trying to find ways to change the course and here the music companies have come up with a new way to create revenue for their artists. They want to strip revenue from the broadcasters as they do their daily business. By doing so, many fledgling and even some big stations are going to be hurt and more Black owned radio stations are going to go out of business. The music industry has done its homework. They have convinced the Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, John Conyers, to introduce this Bill. They have also convinced Chair

of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Patrick Leahy (D, VT) to introduce a similar Bill, S.379. But Ms. Hughes has not approached him or his sponsors. She also has not addressed her anger to the other congresspersons sponsoring Congressman Conyers’ Bill. In essence, the exchange has been “Black on Black” and that is a sad state of affairs. The National Black Chamber of Commerce, Inc. has avoided coming out with a position on this matter until we have thoroughly interviewed our friends and members who are in both the broadcasting and music side of the business. The verbal attacks have been vile and we see a lot of destructive activity going on and that needs to come to an end. Thus, we will hereby state a position and fight to win. Here it is: Radio stations have made music what it is today. The success of many records depended on adequate playing by the station owners. Yes, radio has made many successful music companies what they are today. Why are the music owners coming back on them for a fee or tax? “Pay to Play” is bad business if not a crime and what this Bill proposes is in effect a license to

steal from the radio companies. It is a form of “reverse payola.” Thus, the NBCC agrees with Ms. Hughes position. We agree with her position, but cannot align with her tactics or disrespectful verbiage to our elected officials. Let’s rise and defeat these two Bills, HR 848 and S.379. They will kill many of our radio stations and the local economies they support. We should work with our radio stations and communicate to Capitol Hill that this must not happen. As we do this, we must leave the legend of the 45 continuous years of service to the citizens of Detroit and for the rest of the nation that John Conyers has invested intact. He is a Giant and we must give him and the others their due respect and encourage their leadership. We don’t have to agree on everything and this is one of those occasions. We will win and still be friends with our honorable opponents. H arry A lf ord i s t h e c ofounder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce, Inc. Website: www. national-bc c.org. Progressives and Blue Dogs: Battle Health Reform By Ron Walters NNPA Columnist In case you have missed it, there has been a battle royal over health care reform in the House of Representatives, but the main one has taken place within the Democratic Party between the 80-member Progressive Caucus and the 50member Blue Dog conservative Democratic caucus. An example of that was when Rep. Henry Waxman, chair of the Energy and Commerce Committee negotiated with the Blue Dogs’ to take the financial reimbursement rates to doctors and Hospitals earned allowed by the government away from the Medicare Program. That would allow them to raise rates free from government interference. The Black Congressional Caucus first sounded the alarm with a letter from its Chair, Rep. Barbara Lee, saying they would not be inclined to vote for a bill with that measure in it. Then, the Progressive Caucus – which constitutes the CBS plus Hispanics and White progressives – weighed in and the deal seemed to fall apart. In the end, it was eliminated and The Chicago Crusader

the only thing the Blue Dogs won was delaying final passage of the bill. This is the kind of political problem that has plagued the leadership of the Democratic Party, confused the public and lowered the President’s poll numbers. President Barack Obama gave the initiative to the Congress on crafting the health care reform legislation wanting to avoid the problem that Bill Clinton had by crafting his own bill and setting up a target for opposition groups to shoot it down. The problem with this is that the issue of who is leading the show and what specifically constitutes reform has been difficult to find in the morass of committees who have had jurisdiction over the issue in both the House and Senate. Consequently, the President’s poll numbers have declined an average of seven percent in the past month. Ultimately, the Democratic Party will have to exercise more Republican-like discipline in order to achieve, not only this agenda item, but others. What continues to interest me is how conservative Democrats are allowed by their constituents to privilege issues like the cost of health care over their own access to it.

Dr. Ron Walters

I did a little research on the issue and found that about half of the Blue Dogs represent Congressional Districts that are above the national average (15%) of people who have no health insurance. Moreover, 55 percent represent districts that are higher than the 2006 national average poverty rate. If you look at a map of the U.S., they are mostly in the bottom arc of the country from California, down through Texas and into the South where Hispanics and African Americans reside, with others in traditionally conserva-

BLACKS MUST CONTROL THEIR OWN COMMUNITY

tive Mid-west. So, if it were merely a matter of serving constituents, about half of the Blue Dogs shouldn’t be blue. Weakening the power of the Blue Dogs constitutes a legitimate political objective by the President’s supporters, so that the Democratic caucus has the discipline it needs on other issues along with the numbers. This constitutes a reasonable target for organizing during the August recess, but also in the 2010 and 2012 elections. If these conservative Democrats can get elected having opposed the President and the party’s programs, something will be seriously wrong. The challenge of the Democratic Party and, therefore, the message should be how the party’s program has, or will benefit people in their districts. The numbers reflecting the President’s personal popularity are still strong, but it would be naive for his advisers to think that Obama’s leadership alone can carry the day in pushing his key issues. The logic here is that if he gives the initiative to the Congress, it will also take a far more disciplined party in control to enact measures that are close to what the President wants and not have them negotiated away. Saturday, August 8, 2009

In order to achieve that discipline, the conclusion I reach is that, going forward, the President must have a far more vigorous media strategy that more effectively counters Republican messaging to the people that doubles-back and is reflected in public opinion polls. The decline of the President’s poll numbers on health care is not only a function of the confusion of leadership, but the strong access of Republicans to talk shows and to media ads that express American resentment more effectively than optimism and change. I’ve just read a local Virginia paper where a conservative Democrat who represents that district is raising issues about the cost of health care, but the local message of how it would help people is missing. That is the challenge. We should remember to lift the spirit of some of our great ancestors who made significant contributions to the African Liberation Movement. July 2nd was the 84th birthday of one of these great heroes, Patrice Lumumba. The meaning of the life and work of our beloved brother,

Dr. Conrad Worrill

Patrice Lumumba was rooted in his determination to fight against the forces of the European world in the most turbulent period of the history of the Congo. We should commemorate the birthday of this late, great African leader, who stood against all the forces in the European world and the African world who were steadfast in their efforts to stop the real Independence Movement of the people of the Congo. It is important for us to understand, today, that those who stand and fight against the evil of the European world take on a serious task and challenge. Herein lies the legacy of Patrice Lumumba. Patrice Lumumba was born July 2, 1925 in Katako Kombe, a small village in a remote area of the African continent, then referred to as the Congo. Born to a family of five and educated by missionaries, he was able to cast off the domination of European influences on his life and relate to the interests of the masses of 6

Congolese people. At an early age, he recognized the need to develop the kind of skills necessary to become an active participant in the African Liberation struggle. In his efforts to develop his skills, Patrice had a variety of work experiences that included his being employed in a hospital and a post office, which gave him greater insights into the overall oppression of the Congolese people. The more contact Patrice had with the European world, the more he developed the kind of political consciousness that made him one of the most important leaders in the African Independence Movement. As a result of his participation as the secretary in the Liberal Party of the Congo and his efforts to talk with the Belgian officials, Lumumba was able to see that independence and freedom for his people would not come through the efforts of the Liberal Party or negotiations with the Europeans. His outspokenness and determination to find a vehicle to free the Congolese people led to his being sentenced to two years in prison. Although his prison sentence was cut short, upon his release, the Belgian colonialists, along with their African servants, attempted to isolate Patrice from the growing independence movement of the masses of the people. In October 1958, Patrice helped form the National Congolese Movement, which was to become the forerunner in the liberation struggle. In December of 1958, Patrice was invited to a conference of African nations hosted by Kwame Nkrumah in Accra, Ghana. It was through this conference that Patrice began to establish contact with the leaders of the Liberation Movements in other African countries. From this point forward, the Liberation Movement in the Congo escalated to the point that the Belgian government decided to grant the Congolese people their so-called freedom on June 30, 1960. At the Independence Day Ceremony on June 30th, while his African movement friends were thanking the Belgians for granting them their independence, it is said the Lumumba became enraged. He grabbed the microphone and told his people that the colonization of the Congo was nothing other than the domination of the European world

over the African world. He went on to point out that the humiliating system of slavery, which was imposed upon the African people of the Congo by European forces was done because they were African. This statement by Patrice Lumumba caused the white world and their African servants to conspire in the next year to find a way to get rid of this most courageous spokesman for the interest of the Congolese people. Patrice Lumumba was assassinated on January 17, 1961 at the hands of African mercenaries working in the interests of the Europeans through the United States and the CIA. This fact was recently revealed in Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney’s International Relations Hearings. Before his death, Lumumba wrote a letter to his wife that signified the essence of his involvement in the struggle to free his people. Patrice wrote, in part: “I want my children, who I leave behind and perhaps will never see again, to be told that the future of the Congo is beautiful and that their country expects them, as it expects every Congolese, to fulfill the sacred task of rebuilding on our independence, our sovereignty, for without justice there is no dignity and without independence there are no free men…Do not weep for me, my companion, I know that my country, now suffering so much, will be able to defend its independence and freedom.” In conclusion, we can say that

By Maurice A. Clayton Be it known that millions of Black men are in great conversations about the state of people of color and the direction they are going for the sake of themselves and the nation as a whole. Though we have a man of color at the helm it doesn’t mean that we should look to him for the direction of Blacks in general or the nation as a whole. We as a nation could loose everything, everything that we have gained because of due diligence. The position that we Black men have found ourselves in is shown through the inaction of the Sergeant who arrested the Black professor for disorderly conduct in his own home. The Sergeant refused to acknowledge that he may have created the unfortunate situation. That maybe, just maybe had he been apologetic regarding the situation and shared with the Harvard professor that neighbors were concerned about a man seemingly trying to enter the premises (professor’s residence) with brute force and the police were there to make sure that everything was ok. This however was not the scene that played out at the professor’s home The Sergeant instead insisted that he was right in the arrest. The conduct of the professor was the same as many Blacks who have experienced similiar encounters with law enforcement. Individuals who have been mistreated harshly and unconstitutionally for the least of menial acts of civil disobedience understand how the professor must have felt that evening at his

home. Black men have decided to bring to the courts their concerns looking for fair and just treatment. One will surely find them in Appellate Court if the state court finds its decision were not gratifying to the individuals. Parents must teach their children how to deal with those who are suppose to protect us…not to abuse us. We must realize that we the people must make sure that those who are hired to serve and protect us represent us. When a police department doesn’t represent the population …it leaves itself open to unnecessary pitfalls which would assuredly encourage the harassment of the lower (least) amount of a certain population which will be surely saved while the least of them will suffer. Why, because of the police who are sworn to protect all of the population. Join in now…the conversation continues.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR (Continued from page 4) ed States, Monsanto used those practices against us. Several of my colleagues and I were unable to purchase seed — the lifeblood of any farm — from our local retailer because of threats to penalize the retailer financially. We were forced to drive to a different state to do so. But the NBFA members and I will not be intimidated or silenced. We fought the U.S. Department of Agriculture to ensure and obtain civil rights for Black farmers, and we will fight for our rights to be free from monopoly tyranny. Monsanto's monopoly limits

farmers' choices and threatens our livelihoods. But America's antitrust laws were enacted to protect us — including farmers — from this very situation. These laws are premised on the belief that competitive markets produce the best products, and they need to be enforced. I welcome the Oklahoma Attorney General's recent comments expressing concern about the impact of Monsanto's lawsuit, and I ask him and other state attorneys general to take action to protect farmers and consumers. Farmers ought to be able

-ImaMOTHER OR FATHER?

Henry Louis Gates OFF WE GO TO MAMALAND It’s been played and replayed and it brought about beer and pretzels at the White House with President Obama (rhymes with your Mama) about the arrest of Harvard’s professor Henry Louis Gates. Ima had decided to make him the hero of the month, but it was not until this week that Professor Henry Gates finally spoke that Ima had to remove him as her hero. It had been reported that he talked about Officer

Crowley’s Mama and Ima celebrated that being at Harvard did not keep him from going to Mamaland. Now that the Professor said he didn’t say anything about the man’s Mama I “is” disappointed. The police officer deserved to have his Mama talked about. Professor Gates would fit Ima’s hero status if he had played the dozens. You see a man is sexy and smart if he knows how to play the dozens. I guess I’ll have to find out if Professor Gates knows how to play the dozens and if he does he’ll be my hero for

Word reached Ima that a prominent city official and his mate adopted a baby a couple of weeks ago. He was known as a beat-um-up kind of guy that caused a prominent newscaster to leave town for warmer climes. I wonder if he ever was arrested for domestic abuse (ummm Ima wants to know). Probably not because “dey” was formerly the police in addition to being an allaround “fix-it” guy for the Mare. Ima just wants to know if the official is the Mudder or Fodder?

such. It is said that he has a whole ‘nother family in Vegas, but the rumor about one of his sons is worse than what “dey” say about the father. Word is not only has he had several wives (three dey say), but also he picked off the wife of one of his brothers and then dumped her and her kids on his mother. It seems that one of his sisters takes care of Mom and the brood dumped on her. So often “the apple does not fall far from the tree,” but it seems that the son is lower than low if the rumors are true, ‘cause ain’t nobody off-limits to this brother. -ImaURBAN LEAGUE SOCIAL

The National Urban League convention was held in Chi Town last week and some folks said it was just a replay of the PUSH Convention. Except for Vice President Biden there was Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rev. Al Sharpton,

Cheryl Jackson matter of fact at the same hotel. In “dees” critical times you would think that things would have been different, but it really was just an “Urban League Social.” I guess Cheryl Jackson can get her campaign going for the U.S. Senate now, but it’s going to be an uphill battle ‘cause Giannoulis has a head start plus his family owns a bank and Chris Kennedy has moola galore.

The End of Rae Lewis-Thornton’s ‘Secret’ By George E Curry NNPA Special Contributor (Second of Two Articles) Essence magazine Editor-inChief Susan Taylor heard RaeLewis Thornton speak and immediately decided that her story needed to be shared with her magazine’s readers. The December 1994 cover of Essence uncustomarily carried only one story, “Facing AIDS: I’m young, I’m educated, I’m drug-free, and I’m dying of AIDS” by Rae LewisThornton. The secret that she had shared only with the closest of close friends would now be openly discussed in beauty shops, at social gatherings and around company water fountains. Because everyone else would be reading about the most intimate details of her life, Lewis-Thornton decided she

needed to have a long overdue conversation with Georgia Lewis, the woman she called mama. Lewis-Thornton’s biological mother was White, her father was Black and both were heroin addicts living in Buffalo, N.Y. Her paternal grandfather, Alfred Lewis, Sr., brought Rae into his household when she was a toddler. By then, he was 55 years old and his third wife, Georgia, was 34. But Rae’s doting grandfather died of a stroke when she was 6 and Georgia Lewis continued to rear her. Though they had a tempestuous relationship, Rae felt it was only fair to tell Georgia the news before she learned about it elsewhere. At the end of the conversation, Lewis-Thornton wasn’t certain how well her mother had processed the information. But that uncertainty wouldn’t last long.

“Two weeks later, my mama called me and said, ‘See bitch, I told you if you wasn’t no whore, you wouldn’t have AIDS.” But most of those who read the account of Lewis-Thornton’s life were grateful, not critical. “That took me national,” Lewis-Thornton said, referring to the Essence story. “I became in demand as a speaker. People started to bring me across the country.” She was accompanied on those trips by Kenneth, her husband of four months. “He said that I was his ministry,” Lewis-Thornton said. “He believed that he was supposed to be in my life during this period and he was supposed to be there and watch me and be there to support me as I made my transition to death. And he was going to go around the country and talk about what it was like to be my caregiver.” But when Lewis-Thornton didn’t die, the marriage did and the couple got a divorce. When Rae decided to date again, she had to face a new reality. She explained, “The stigma around HIV makes it complicated for men who are attracted to me to say, ‘You know what? I can do this.’ It’s not them per se, it’s the stigma.” Now if a man openly dated Lewis-Thornton, the whole world would know that he was dating a woman with AIDS, raising questions about his HIV status and whether other women

Extended Coverage

You carry homeowner’s (or renter’s) insurance to cover your home and your belongings in it. But what is NOT covered in a standard policy—or not fully—is your expensive jewelry. *** Most policies will pay somewhere between $1,000 and $5,000 for a stolen item, no matter what its value. (The policy may pay more if things are lost in a fire or explosion, but that’s rare. Theft and “mysterious loss” occur more oftern.) *** How much is your jewelry worth? Probably a lot more than you paid for it years ago. There have been sharp increases in the price of gold and silver, and the value of gemstones holds steady or rises. *** Almost all home insurers will sell extra coverage, not very expensive, for valuables. You’ll need to document the value of each item with a detailed sales receipt or an appraisal. *** Consider inflation when you review your insurance coverage; you may want to reappraise items periodically. ***

NEWS Walmart helps launch Chicago Conservation Leadership Corps $150,000 donation to help students with green job training in Chicago The Walmart Foundation and the Student Conservation Association (SCA), together with the Friends of the Forest Preserves, recently launched an innovative Conservation Leadership Corps to engage 60 local high school students in conservation service, environmental education, and green jobs training in the city of Chicago and throughout Cook County. Funded through a $150,000 donation from the Walmart Foundation, the seven-week program is designed to provide participants with green career skills and green job training, and to identify and develop conservation leaders among Chicago’s young people. “SCA is about empowering young people, connecting them to nature, and practicing lifelong stewardship,” says SCA President Dale Penny. “Here in Chicago, our members will provide handson conservation service while performing trail building and restoration, invasive plant removal, revegetation projects, and construction.” Penny notes, “Participating students, who were recruited from local schools, organizations, and churches, will also engage in weekly environmental education activities.” “Walmart is focused on environmental sustainability at every level. The Walmart Foundation, in particular, is proud to partner with SCA and others who share our commitment to protecting the environment for future generations,” said John Bisio, Walmart public affairs. “SCA plays an important and unique role in building the next generation of conservation leaders.

The death is easy.” But life isn’t. “I’ve had a lot of physical changes with HIV,” Lewis-Thornton explained. “That’s been a huge adjustment for me, emotionally, especially being an attractive woman. People say, ‘Get over it, it’s no big deal. You’re still cute.’ “You go from a size 12 to a size two. At some point, I was a size zero. And I went back up to a size six. That was fine. my body. And I got a hump in my back and I got a chin pouch and I looked like I was six months pregnant.” The uneven redistribution of weight happens when women, such as Lewis-Thornton, suffer from lipodystrophy, a side effect of a class of anti-HIV drugs called HAART. She also suffers from peripheral neuropathy, which is damage to the communications network that transmits information from the central nervous system to different parts of the body. Generally, it creates severe burning and a tingling sensation in the hands or feet. In Lewis-Thornton’s case, it feels like someone is constantly sticking pins

and needles into the bottom of her feet. “I had to fight with my HIV,” she explained. “So the way I did it back then, I would say, ‘Okay, I woke up this morning and all I could do was take my medicine and go back to bed.’ Before the day was over, I had to make myself get up, brush my teeth, comb my hair and if I did that, then at least AIDS didn’t take everything I had. “So, there was this game I played with this disease, like, ‘I can’t let you take everything I’ve got.’ And I still play it: ‘I can’t let you take everything I’ve got. I got to do something for myself.’” Lewis-Thornton relishes her role as a pioneering AIDS activist, but

refuses to be limited by that role. “It’s hard to divorce AIDS,” she said. “What I’m trying to figure out now is what else can I do in addition to AIDS now that I’m still here.” Although the speaking invitations have slowed in recent years, LewisThornton has not been idle. She earned a Master’s of Divinity degree from McCormick Theological Seminary and is an ordained Baptist minister. Lewis-Thornton is close to completing her doctorate degree at Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago and has designed and crafted a line of AIDS awareness bracelets called RLT Collection (www.rltcollection.com). She knows that regardless of what

Teens join summer music camp to better themselves and their community Grammy Award Winner Darius Brooks shares his gift of music with youth Despite the increase in violent crimes in Chicago’s streets, some teens are choosing the performing arts as a means of refuge. SDM Foundation for the Arts, the not-for-profit organization of Grammy, Stellar, and Dove Award winner Darius Brooks, is holding the second annual teen music and enrichment camp Jam Session. The weeklong camp will take place August 10-14 at Rainbow PUSH, 930 East 50th Street, for teens 14 -18 years of age. Students, who come from throughout Chicago, will participate in a combination of music and personal skills building workshops, including vocal training, college resources, careers in music, and master classes conducted by some of the best in the music industry. The end of the camp session features a finale concert for family and friends. “Today, I still believe that music can hold the key to saving many of our young people by

showing them a path to a better and brighter future.” said Brooks. This year, Brooks hopes to identify a minimum of 75 students from some of Chicago’s most distressed neighborhoods. Also starting this year, SDM will provide year-round monthly activities for those who begin this summer, providing the ongoing one-on-one support and mentoring that is so important as they move through school. SDM is a not-for-profit foundation aimed at nurturing, mentoring, and training individuals who are interested in pursuing careers in music. SDM identifies and develops young talented vocalists and musicians from the Chicago area. The NEW Four-One-One By Raymond Ward Entertainment Editor A CELEBRITY BEAT-DOWN: NICK & MARIAH VS. EMINEM: Since Eminem first made a name for himself in the music scene, he has been “dissing” celebrities including former President Bill Clinton, left and right in his videos. And now since Mariah Carey, is dressed in drag and sort of resembles Eminem in her new video for “Obsessed” the rapper can’t take what he dishes out and has come after Mariah with a vengence with a derogatory new track on his new album, “Relapse.” In the track entitled “Bagpipes From Baghdad,” Eminem dishes about his alleged romance with Nick Cannon’s wife Mariah Carey....a romance that she denies ever happened. When asked if his wife’s song “Obsessed” is about Eminem, Cannon responded “Honestly, I don’t think so. I don’t think that she would take the time. My wife doesn’t beef. She’s Mariah Carey. She’s not beefin’, she’s a vegetarian.” But listen to the track by Eminem and he says...” Mariah whatever happened to us.” “Why did we ever have to break-up?” He then turns his sights on Cannon and says, “Nick Cannon, you better back the f—— up. I’m not playing I want her back you punk.” And it gets worse when Eminem raps, “I wish you luck with that...wh—-” “People keep saying that “Obsessed” was directed at certain people,” Cannon said. “To be Eminem completely honest, Mariah did the song because she’s a huge fan of Lindsay Lohan and the movie “Mean Girls,” and there’s a line in the movie where one of the girls is like,’Why are you so obsessed with me?’ She says that at the beginning of the song, and that’s where the concept came from. But you know, art imitates life.” Last week Cannon fired back at Eminem in an entry on his personal blog. In the post, Cannon said that Eminem is “still obsessed with my wife, the same female that wouldn’t let him get to second base more than 8 years ago.” Cannon calls Eminem “Slim Lamey” and offers a challenge to him. “Man to man, let’s meet up and deal with this like adults.” he writes. “This is my invitation to you, whenever and wherever you like sir. So when you come out of your introverted hiding place and ask your bodyguards if you can go out and play by yourself, I’m here Pimp.” “So, Miss Marshall ( Eminem’s real first name is Marshall ), I’m going to make you wish you never spoke my name and regret the ungodly things you said about my wife,” Cannon continues. “Your legacy has now been tainted from this day forth! You will now be known as the rapper who lost to corny-ass Nick Cannon!” Nick Cannon has his own theory about just who he’d like the song “Obsessed” to be about, and it’s not Eminem. “I always say I thought the song was about me, cause I’m obsessed with my wife,” he said. “But if somebody’s out there and you feel like you might have been obsessed, then the record’s about you.” HISTORIC FILM: The Black International Festival of Film and Video is bringing “Inside Buffalo” a film about the legendary Buffalo Soldiers to Chicago. The screening will take place on Saturday, August 8th at 3:00 PM at the Gene Siskel Center, located at 164 North State Street in Chicago. This documentary was produced this year by Fred Kuwornu, an African-Italian filmaker who has worked in the past as an assistant to Spike Lee and the film features the only living African-American awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for serving in World war II, Lt. Prom Night In Mississippi By Elaine Hegwood Bowen, MSJ

HBO documentary airing through August 24.

“It’s my prayer that we can use something as a catalyst that allows them to interact socially,” Morgan Freeman. This is the heartfelt sentiment that academy-award winning veteran actor and Charleston, Mississippi, native Morgan Freeman embraced when he, for the second time, made the integrated student body at Charleston High School an offer they didn’t refuse. Freeman had propositioned the senior class in 1997, but he had no takers. However, this time around in 2008, the class was willing to give it a shot. Their challenge was simple—to hold just one prom, for both the black and white students. Not many would still imagine that there are segregated proms still being held in Mississippi in the 21st century, in what many are calling the post racial age, but racism still exists in this small town of about 2,200 people. But if racism exists anywhere, certainly it’s alive and festering in southern Mississippi. And Freeman was dedicated to stump out at least a bit of the “stupidity” that accompanied the mostly white parents who insisted on having two proms, because they didn’t want their children mingling socially with the black students. But proms aren’t just simple gatherings; there’s much fanfare, anticipation and preparation attached to this time-honored festive coming-of-age event. And the end result for the students at Charleston High School—if they could pull this off—would be something so much grander than the occasion itself. The students could affect a sea change for their community and dispel historically prejudicial attitudes around integration, while annihilating the hate that permeated in the minds of many Charleston residents. And while the students may have been willing to hold just one united prom, some of their parents didn’t relish the idea of the two races mingling. They felt it was enough that they attended class together; there was certainly no need for them to share a dance floor. The documentary shows the students, faculty and parents planning the big event, setting themes, finding locations and doing what would finally be best for all involved. There was no mone-

“Slavery: Real People and Their Stories of Enslavement” By Reg Grant Every night after dinner, you have chores to do. Most Saturdays, if you’re not already busy, you’ve got more chores. Maybe your allowance is even tied to doing things around the house or helping out. Room cleaned, garbage out, do the dishes, help Mom, help Dad, it never ends. Doing chores is no fun, but neither is listening to your parents yell at you to do your chores. So imagine working 18 to 20 hours a day and getting nothing but somebody’s outgrown clothes and seed to grow your own food. That was how some people lived when they were slaves, and in the new book “Slavery: Real People and Their Stories of Enslavement” by Reg Grant, you’ll learn about what it was like. You may never complain again. While you might think slavery only happened in America in the early-to-mid 1800s, the truth is that slavery in ancient times was The Chicago Crusader

very common. During wartime, victorious armies captured their enemies and enslaved them. Slavery of this sort was even common in Africa where many warriors saw other ethnic groups as “foreigners.” While slavery was common in America thousands of years ago, Grant says the slave trade increased here because colonists needed extra hands for plantation work. The Dutch were the first Europeans to bring African slaves to this continent, and by the late 1700s, some 100,000 enslaved Africans had been brought to the Americas. Imagine being taken away from your home and all your toys, chained or yoked, and marched miles across the country. That’s what happened to millions of enslaved Africans who were then packed aboard ships so tightly that they could barely roll over. The passage from Africa to North America often took months, and although captains of the ships wanted their human cargo to sur-

their white master’s children! But even though there is no slavery in the U.S. any more, slavery still exists in the world. In Pakistan, Africa, Haiti, and elsewhere, slavery is once again common – and surprisingly, children are often the enslaved. “Slavery” is a decent enough book. It has lots of pictures, a comprehensive timeline, and diary excerpts from former slaves and others. The problem comes in the shallowness of the information: author Reg Grant doesn’t elaborate much on any one subject, perhaps because there’s such a vast amount to be said. Also, astute parents and teachers will want to note that there are a few un-PC words in this book that may bear explaining.

worked in the fields, some processed the crops, others panned for gold, and many worked as personal servants. In many cases, African slaves raised Saturday, August 8, 2009

Still, “Slavery” is an important book and will get kids thinking about this part of our history, as well as that which is still going on around the world. For your 7-to13-year-old, reading and absorbing this book won’t be a chore. 13

Fun-filled Prayer Breakfast touches on education The new Africa Resurrection and Restoration Ministries (ARRM) recently hosted a very successful back-to-school prayer breakfast entitled, “Taste the Difference.” Approximately 100 people including pastors, ministers, educators, students, and community activists attended the event held at New Hope Christian Missionary Baptist Church, 1033 E. 95th Street. This lends itself nicely to the documentary, as it serves to really amplify the importance of the discussion or issues covered in these particular scenes. HEALTH Open Streets brings tens of thousands out to play in their neighborhood Tens of thousands of people replaced car traffic with physical activity today on 8 miles of Chicago streets for Open Streets, an event that encourages fun physical activity in Chicago neighborhoods. Residents rode bikes, walked and ran along the route, which passed through the Logan Square, Humboldt Park, Garfield Park, North Lawndale and Little Village neighborhoods. “In a community with high rates of crime, obesity and asthma, Open Streets offers a safe space that promotes active living while decreasing air pollution produced by motorized vehicles,” said Juana Ballesteros, director of the Greater Humboldt Park Community of Wellness. “Open Streets contributes to our community’s well-being.”

Activities stations lined the route and showcased the flavor of each neighborhood. Residents stopped for a wide variety of activities and performances, including yoga, Gospel choir, salsa dancing, basketball and children’s games. “This event is a trailblazer,” said Rob Sadowsky, Active Transportation Alliance director. “We demonstrated that when you combine the power of neighborhood-based organizations, with committed and engaged city agencies, along with hundreds of volunteers, we can truly transform our streets and our parks.” Open Streets combined last year’s two Sunday Parkways events, which brought out 10,000 people over two October Sundays. Open Streets is modeled after similar events in other cities, in-

Wellness, health achieved with alternative medicines By La Risa Lynch A recent health expo held at Kennedy King College hoped to educate African Americans about natural ways to improve health and wellness using alternative medicines such as herbal remedies, reflexology, acupuncture and chiropractics. Robert Beck, founder of ACOG, a herbal colon cleansing supplement, co-sponsored the event. He said while Blacks are slowly embracing alternative medicines, its another form of preventative health care, a major push in President‘s Obama’s overall national health care plan. “There is not much going to be done for people who can’t afford to get sick. So you have to start taking preventative measures,” Beck said. He hoped the health fair would become a roadmap for Blacks to care of their health holistically. Unlike a car, there is no manual that tells people how to do that, he said, adding that Blacks must drink more water and eat healthy someThe Chicago Crusader

thing they rarely do. “What you call soul food really means overcooked food,” he said, noting that vegetables should be crunchy not mushy. “Our food that we eat, we cook all our vegetable until the nutrients are totally gone. Now the broth is the most effective thing.” The workshop featured presentations on chiropractic medicines, exercise and fitness, nutrition and how stress impacts health. Several vendors showcased their natural products including bath and beauty aids. It also included a presentation on treating diabetes and high blood pressure with natural products. What you drink is just as important as what you eat, said Dr. Hugh Jenkins, of Alternative HealthCare, 9948 S. Western. His center offers alkaline water that has a high pHfactor, which Jenkins said is better for the body. He said people should drink water that is more alkaline based with a PH-factor of 7 or above. Anything below that, Jenkins ex-

plained, has a high acidy which is bad for the body. He said disease cannot live in alkaline environment. “If we can change that pH level a lot of things get better,” Jenkins said. “Skin gets better. People’s hair start to grow back. The aches and pains people have because of too much acid in the system starts to reverse.” He contends alkaline water hydrates the body at the cellular level which reduces the effects of high blood pressure and diabetes. He said alkaline water is not a cure “but some of the health problems people have get turned around.” Lekeysha Perkins, co-owner of Holistic Health Awareness and Transformation Center, also says more Blacks are embracing alternative medicines to improve their health. Most seeking her services which includes colonics, massage therapy, chiropractics, and body detoxification are people 30-50 years old. She noted many turn to homeopathic remedies because the side effects of some medications are

worse than the actually aliment. “They are looking for alternative ways to heal the body,” Perkins said. The center offers a detoxification regime based on a raw food diet as a way to heal the body. She said the phrase raw food should not scare people off. “A lot of people when you saw raw they think meat, but it is a matter of education,” Perkins said. Raw foods, she explained, are fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains or “anything that is not processed.” Perkins added that many cooked foods can be made from raw foods like cheese cakes, peace pie, eggplant stew and marinara sauce made from zucchini and tomatoes. Those incorporating a raw food regime into their diet see clearer skin, a boost in energy and metabolism and regular bowel movements, she added. “That’s why they say, ‘Eat your fruits and vegetables,’” Perkins said Sherwood Grant, an Oak Park resident, changed his eating habits not because of any medical condition,

but because it was time. He said many people are stuck in a rut eating the same unhealthy foods over and over again. Grant follows a simple diet derived from the bible — Genesis 1:19. “It says that God gave every fruit bearing tree that bears seeds to eat, and He then therefore gave vegetation to the animals,” Grant said, “so I think that right there is a big guideline.” Grant, a physical fitness instructor, came to the event to hear what was new on the horizon in terms of taking care of the body naturally. He believes that some of the traditional way to address medical ailments are “overkill” that make people sicker and die earlier. Grants contends many people don’t know how the body works and what is needed to take care of it. Simple things such as good nutrition, sleep, fluids, positive attitude and generosity are keys to “longevity and good health,” he added. 19
