City’s top principal resigns By Patrice Nkrumah and Chinta Strausberg The leader of the city’s top-rated neighborhood elementary school abruptly resigned August 31 after deciding to not fight the charges that were levied against him by the Board of Education in an attempt to

This facility will be destroyed when the Obama Library is built, leaving Black Sports programs with nowhere to go By J. Coyden Palmer The consequences of building the Obama Presidential Center in Jackson Park will mean the displacement of thousands of city youth who use the current athletic fields at the site for sports like baseball, track, football, soccer, rugby, lacrosse and softball, according to a member of the Jackson Park Advisory Council (JPAC). When Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the University of Chicago announced the site for the presidential center last month, they made no mention of where the dozens of athletic teams who use the fields for games and practices would go. With August being the deadliest month in Chicago in the past 20 years, park advocates say reducing positive team activities for youth is not the way to go. Kenneth Newman, a member of the JPAC and a soccer referee for over 30 years in Illinois and Florida, has traveled all over the world officiating matches and says sports, like soccer, give youth the opportunity to have an international experience. Newman is one of many outspoken critics of the Obama Presidential Center because he

says it will do more harm to the community than good by displacing so many athletic programs. He also said the city of Chicago is in dire need of more stadiums for Chicago Public Schools and by building the library on the Jackson Park site, they are making the situation worse.

COMING NEXT WEEK

“This track and accompanying field was built by the park district. It is not CPS property, but it is used by CPS schools, private schools and even colleges,” Newman told the Crusader earlier this week at the site. “If we are to believe what the city and Obama Library Foundation claim that the track will be relocated, wherever it is placed, it will be further away. There will be less parking and farther away from bus stops or for people riding bicycles or getting there in a wheelchair. Removing this track from this location does nothing to enhance the use of the track in another location. And, it will make it more difficult for local students and local residents to use it.” The track and adjacent athletic fields at Jackson Park are used on a daily basis. Local residents often come in the morning and evening to walk around the track for exercise. Hyde Park Career Academy uses the facility for its football team along with the boys’ and girls’ track and field program. The baseball and softball fields are used by Mt. Carmel, Kenwood, University of Chicago Lab, and Hyde Park high schools during the season. There is also a girls’ rugby league made up of charter schools that play at the field. There are also between 50 and 75 youth football players that play in the Jackson Park program. (Continued on page 2)

Troy LaRaviere fire him. Troy LaRaviere has been an outspoken critic of Mayor Emanuel and CPS officials over the last few years. In a letter to the Mayor, LaRaviere continued his criticism and said he lived up to his contract obligations and promises to improve the school. When LaRaviere took over Blaine Elementary in 2011, they were ranked as the #16 elementary school in the city. Earlier this week they were ranked #3 overall and the #1 neighborhood school. “In the process, working with motivated teachers and engaged parents, we increased the percentage of students meeting reading standards from an already high 79% to 89% in just our first two years. That kind of growth from an already high performing school–without the addition of a selective enrollment program–is unprecedented,” LaRaviere wrote in his resignation letter. “Behind this significant accomplishment are a series of basic concepts based on empirical evidence regarding effective school practices and thoughtful consideration of how we might apply those practices at Blaine. One fundamental element of improving the school was ending selective access to advanced curriculum.” (Continued on page 3)

Rhymefest talks to the Crusader after ordeal Makes song about Chicago Police, robbery By Chinta Strausberg His problems are over, but rapper El Che “Rhymefest” Smith is still shaken after he was given a hard time trying to file a police report after he was robbed at gunpoint last weekend in Bronzeville. Since then he has written a song about frustrations. He’s also been interviewed by the Chicago Crusader about his ordeal. On Monday, August 29, Smith said he was robbed twice—once by a ski mask-wearing man, the other by three cops who refused to let him make out a police report. The robber got $3.00 and his wallet, which containing a debit card, which he canceled, but he was told that today he was going to die. While sitting in his car in the Bronzeville community, 39-year-old Rhymefest said his nightmare began at around 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning at 43rd and Cottage Grove. “I woke up early that morning to go make some music. I am sitting in the front seat of my car listening to music. I had an idea for some words, and I pulled my car over to write the words down. When you put your car in park, many times the doors are locked. “The doors are locked but mo-

ments later somebody jumped into the passenger seat of the car with a gun pointed at my head and told me, ‘You’re going to die today. Today is the day you die.’ “I said, look, what do you want from me,” and he said, ‘I want the money. I want all the money.’ I gave him my wallet and before he left he said to me, ‘You were this close to being shot’.” He said the robber wore black pants and a black shirt. “That was also interesting because at 7 a.m. this young man was dressed for work. That’s his work. That’s his uniform. I help so many young people about that age. I thought to myself at the time, this is how it happens. The people who you love the most are the ones who kill you. “ I thought here I am in a community that everybody told me to leave, about to die from the hand of the people I love the most. That is what was going through my mind. It was surreal, a dream.” Rhymefest, a father of three, said as he drove off, he did not want to report the crime because he “figured nobody is going to catch the guy, nobody cares.” But, he thought about his volunteer work with young people and how as a mentor he often tells them “we need to be the example of a changing community and how we need to work with the police and the community.

“I decided to report it because what if this guy shot some elderly lady or did something else. They need a description of who is running around in the area.” Rhymefest was shocked at the behavior of two Black and one white policemen at the police station located at 71st and Cottage Grove and doubly insulted when one of them asked him if he got robbed at 43rd and Cottage Grove why did he come this far from where the original crime took place to make out a report. “That’s not a question you should ask someone who has been robbed who was reporting a crime. It doesn’t matter where they are. All that matters is that you make this report. We pay our dollars for them to serve and protect.” Arriving at the police station, Rhymefest said he was surprised to see a (Black) female police officer eating and playing Candy Crunch. “I told her I wanted to make a report of a violent robbery and she said ‘OK’ and to “hold on” but she kept playing her Candy Crunch,” he recalled. “I said, really? She kept playing her video game. I said really”? At that point, Rhymefest said another Black female officer wanted to help and asked him to tell her what happened. “But, first she told me to put my hands on the desk so I can see them so she could feel secure. “I put my hands on the table but

El Che “Rhymefest” Smith we all know that was bizarre. I’m telling her, but she said, ‘Well, he didn’t get your phone. He must not have been that great of a robber.” Disgusted, Rhymefest said, “At that point, I said one officer is stuffing her face and playing Candy Crunch and you’re patronizing me. Are you going to take my report?” He was stunned when the officer told him, “Don’t ask about the other officer and you don’t ask any questions. We ask you all the questions.” At that point, Rhymefest asked for her superior. “Low and behold the

(white) sergeant was standing in the corner behind her. He said to me, ‘If you’re going to mouth off to my officer, you’re not going to make a report today. I’m not taking no damn report. Get out of here. Leave. No report for you’.” “At that point, I turned on my camera, but then they became more concerned about the camera than the crime. They said you can’t record in here. Turn that off. They are very camera conscious at this point but (Continued on page 3)

GAME OVER? Facility will be destroyed when the Obama Library is built, leaving Black Sports programs with nowhere to go (Continued from page 1) “All of these programs will be negatively impacted, and I don’t see any way of a positive result,” Newman said. “If the Obama Library goes from 63rd Street all the way north to the Midway Plaisance…there isn’t enough empty land to replace what they are taking.” In recent years, the city tried to ad-

“You have 70-plus CPS high schools and only seven stadiums. That is a 10-to-1 ratio of schools to stadiums. That is not going to do much to keep young people active in sports when they have to travel four to five miles just to get to the stadium,” Newman said. He went on to say the AfricanAmerican community needs to really understand the gravity of the situation and should be enraged their tax dollars are not being spent in their own community to help the youth. He said the two sports that give the most college scholarships are cross-country and soccer. “CPS is really missing the boat by not encouraging their students to play soccer at the elementary-school level, especially for female students,” Newman said. “There are 350 elementary schools. I would guess there are probably just over 100 that have soccer programs. For those communities that are not supporting or demanding there be soccer programs in their elementary schools, they’re only hurting their own kids from a fitness and world culture standpoint.”

KENNETH NEWMAN, A member of the Jackson Park Advisory Council, says the Obama Presidential Library will harm the community by displacing many athletic programs.

Last week, the Crusader learned that Simeon Career Academy will have a new athletic turf field built for their football team to practice on and for their baseball and softball teams to play on. Phillips High School practices and plays some of its football games at a newer turf field in the Bronzeville community. Last season, Phillips became the first Public League school to ever win a state football championship, which Newman said is irrefutable proof that if the resources are provided to CPS athletes, they will find plenty of success. Off the top of his head, Newman said he could name several other sites that would be great for building a stadium because they are not being used. He said the site of the old Michael Reese Hospital would be a good spot, along with the acres of vacant land near 43rd & Cicero where the old LeClaire Courts housing complex used to be. He said by not building stadiums or putting the proper resources and staff into the Chicago Park District facilities, city leaders are culpable in the increase in violent crime.

dress some of the issues regarding facilities in Chicago. Lindblom Park opened a new outdoor track and field that has lights and is used by the Lindblom Math and Science Academy’s sports teams. There is also a plan to build a multi-milliondollar indoor track facility at both Lindblom and Gately Park in the Pullman community.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2016

The maintenance of the seven stadiums CPS currently has comes into question. Chicago Public League coaches have complained for years about the conditions of the turf field at Hanson Stadium and the lights that poorly illuminate the field during night games. “The turf is downright dangerous because it is so worn out, and it should have been replaced 10 years ago, but they have ignored this issue,” Newman said. “There are ways of funding this. There is $400 million in TIF money in reserve that the mayor controls. If he were to just build one new stadium a year for the next 10 years, we would start cutting gang activity and the horrible violence that is currently going on would not be happening. “This problem has been going on for decades because of the neglect of CPS regarding their need for athletic facilities since World War II. It has been a major mistake on the part of CPS, the City of Chicago and the State of Illinois—all of whom play a part in governing the city’s schools. Building this Obama Library here is only adding to that problem.” www.chicagocrusader.com

Mayor to have too much power in new police plan Experts, aldermen say new agency will not have enough independence Chicago Crusader staff report Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s plan for police accountability gives him too much power for his police oversight plan to remain independent, according to some aldermen and a police misconduct expert, who spoke at City Hall on Wednesday, August 31. The officials were referring to Emanuel’s new Civilian Office on Police Accountability (COPA), an agency that will replace the beleaguered Independent Police Review Authority (IPRA). It’s a new name but some offi-

cials have old concerns that the police oversight agency will still be in the hands of City Hall, which has come under fire since the Laquan McDonald scandal broke last November after a video was released showing Officer Jason Van Dyke shooting the 17year-old 16 times in October 2014. Officials are concerned that the new agency will not have a budget and must rely on the mayor, who can weaken COPA’s authority by slashing its financial resources. There is also concern that the agency cannot hire its own attorneys without the city’s law department. The concerns came one day after Emanuel backed down on his

Facing political pressure, Rahm decided to give aldermen more time to review the proposed ordinance before they vote on it. “If certain fundamental flaws aren’t addressed, it’s a recipe for failure, starting with independence,” said Craig Futterman, a University of Chicago Law School professor who has long studied police misconduct in the city. “For this new COPA agency to work, it has to be independent from the mayor and City Hall.” Emanuel moved to replace IPRA after his own police accountability Mayor Rahm Emanuel task force recommended that the agency be abolished as a part of an plans to have the council vote on effort to rid Chicago’s police force new police oversight agency at a of its racist history. September 14 council meeting. Under the proposal, the new in-

spector general in charge of public safety would be chosen by Inspector General Joe Ferguson as part of a nationwide search. In addition to police shootings, COPA would also investigate cases where police use Tasers to subdue civilians. To serve on COPA, retired police officers and prosecutors would have to wait five years before applying as investigators with the agency. The police superintendent would have to wait 60 days to respond to the new agency’s recommendation to fire or suspend police officers accused of misconduct and other violations. The police superintendent could also exercise a 30-day suspension under the mayor’s plan.

City’s top principal resigns (Continued from page 1) LaRaviere is loved by parents and staff at the North Side school. Many rallied to support him earlier this year when CPS charged him with insubordination and various other charges. His supporters say the charges were politically motivated and they believe came from Mayor Emanuel himself. LaRaviere has also contended that the thing holding back CPS students and administrators from achieving are politicians who have no clue what they are doing. He said improving achievement in schools is easy when a principal has parents who are involved and a dedicated staff. “The difficult part was muster- TROY LARAVIERE SPEAKS ON WVON’s “Bob Shaw” show, ing the will and stamina to remain highlighting several succesful schools in the Black community. steadfast in our commitment to “One might think that after rection, your appointees are pushuse evidence-based practice in the face of tremendous pressure–from witnessing the unprecedented ing forward with efforts to termipoliticians like you–to adopt base- academic gains of Blaine stu- nate my employment. A spokesperson for the Chicago Public Schools referred the Crusader to the Mayor’s office for comment. The Mayor’s office had no comment on the resignation letter. LaRaviere on Sunday accused the Chicago Public School (CPS) of allegedly subsidizing segregated schools when there is proof that integration improves academics. Appearing on WVON’s “Bob Shaw” show, LaRaviere referred to an article in the Chicago Magazine that listed the top 15 CPS’s. He highlighted the Arthur Dixon Elementary School located in Chatham which ranked fourth. “If their students go in with these African American students somehow the school would be less vibrant or less academically sound, but 5 out of the top 10 schools have majority Black populations and the number one school on this list has the biggest ethnic group in it, and it is Black. LaRaviere was referring to the Chicago Magazine’s list of top public schools.

LaRaviere said this listing is proof that “CPS has a narrative it can push now to stop wasting money on school construction or unnecessary school construction” to resolve overcrowdedness.” He wants CPS to “push the narrative that integration improves the (academic) performance. We have examples where we have integration across the city where school performance has been elevated, not depressed, but it won’t push that narrative because banks make a lot of money. They get to double their profit when they do these unnecessary school constructions” including charter schools. “In order to subsidize the desire of some parents to have their kids in a segregated school, in order to enrich banks and charter operators, CPS continues to overspend on construction when they could push a real narrative that integration would actually uplift the performance so we don’t have to spend all of this money,” he said. As an example, LaRaviere re(Continued on page 7)

A GREAT JOURNALISTIC PEN HAS BEEN SILENCED George Curry has unexpectedly left the journalistic building, and the African American community has lost a great warrior. Curry, who was a former Editor-In-Chief of the NNPA News Wire, passed away from a reported heart attack on Saturday, August 20, 2016. He was 69 years old. Curry had also formerly served as Publisher/Editor-In-Chief of ‘Emerge,’ a news magazine that targeted issues important to the Black community. Moreover, Curry had a syndicated column that regularly appeared in the Crusader. George Curry was a journalist who was on the frontlines of the Civil Rights movement, and he could be trusted to tell the truth that had to be told. He did not mince words. He thoroughly researched his content. He also had a history of mentoring young journalists. According to Ruth E. Thaler-Carter, he co-founded the Greater St. Louis Association of Black Journalists (GSLABJ) and launched its journalism workshop for minority high school students interested in journalism careers. This organization is approaching its 40th year of service to young people and the journalism profession. Also, Curry was part of a Black media delegation that worked with the Black AIDS Institute to cover the 2016 International AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa. These are just a few among many other accomplishments. Dorothy Leavell, publisher of the Crusader Newspapers in Chicago, IL and Gary, IN, stated, in an article written by Stacy M. Brown (NNPA News Wire Contributor), “Curry was a consummate journalist with integrity as his mantra.” “We shall miss this voice of reason and thought-provoking columns full of researched facts. It was just the week of August 13th that George wrote a column titled, ‘Even Funerals Are Not Family Reunions Anymore.’ Leavell continued, “He used his family as an example of the loss of closeness that he had enjoyed during his childhood and early adult life and bemoaned the fact that at his cousin Charlene’s funeral the week before that closeness was no longer there.” Curry pledged to help get his family back together, and most likely would have succeeded had he lived. Curry’s death reverberated far and wide, touching people in all walks of life, from the Black Congressional Caucus to presidential hopeful Hillary Rodham Clinton. Rev. Al Sharpton called him a trailblazer, and Rev. Benjamin Chavis said, “The legacy of freedomfighter journalists like George Curry will never pass away, but will always be kept dear and present in our continued struggles to liberate all from injustice.” In 2003, Curry was named “Journalist of the Year” by the National Association of Black Journalists and he’s also on NABJ’s list of the Most Influential Black Journalists of the 20th Century. Ultimately, the accolades going forth for the life of this great journalist are far too numerous to list here, but we can rest assured that the world of journalism has been left with a gaping hole. The Black community, in particular, has lost a very loud and effective voice. Of course, there are others who will take up the mantle, but Curry undoubtedly helped point the way. George Curry’s demise underscores the importance of the Black Press. Too often, Black people lament the dearth of Black businesses and Black institutions. The Black Press is alive and well, and Curry knew the power that it could have in helping to shape policies and communicate important information that would otherwise not be addressed in the mainstream media. In this regard, he served as a role model for others coming behind him. Hopefully, many of them will come to understand the power of the Black Press and to use their journalistic talents to help uplift the Black community as he did. Without the Black Press, the community would really be in the dark. Pioneers like Curry help to shed light in very dark places. George Curry will truly be missed; a great pen has been silenced, and the Crusader sends condolences to his family and friends. May he live forever in our hearts! A luta continua.

Even though it’s been decades since I was in the classroom, every day I still can remember I was a pretty good student. What I cannot recall from my education experience is when our elected officials pushed for entertainment over problem solving and community building. If I could remember that then, maybe it would be understandable why 24th Ward Alderman Michael Scott, Jr. is the producer of the West Side Music Festival. Friends told me that in his previous life working with the Chicago Park District, Scott also promoted a festival on the West Side. The West Side has 1,000 problems and music ain’t one of them. Scott is playing in his comfort zone. The residents of the 24th Ward deserve much better. We deserve a representative in government who can battle for economic improvements. By the way, I didn’t see Scott’s fingerprints any place on the proposed development at Roosevelt and Kostner. The Clarius Partners apparently put the proposed $43 million deal together with zero input from Scott. How can he claim to be representing us when the biggest

proposed deal in K-Town since the first Mayor Daley comes along and he is a cricket on the project? This project is supposed to bring nearly 400 permanent jobs. Should we think his music festival will generate 50 full-time jobs? While I have never produced a music festival, I know that the people who do get paid. Scott needs to immediately come clean with how much he and his coproducer, his wife, are making off of this festival. I understand Scott is in his first term, but surely he learned something about politics and government operations from his late father. If not, common sense should tell him to avoid even the appearance of impropriety. Even if we give Scott a huge benefit of the doubt, he is not making any money in the producer role, who won’t bring up the possibility there are kickbacks from the performers? For many people perception is reality. That is exactly why Scott should have been smarter and stuck to the traditional role of alderman. This festival of his has no lasting favorable impact on our community. It leaves out grade school age residents, as well as senior citizens. Aren’t they part of the ward too? He has been on the job two years and I am hard-pressed to pinpoint anything Scott has done to have a major favorable impact on our ward. He campaigned on being a lifelong resident and un-

derstanding the community’s needs. I am much, much older than Scott and lived here longer than he has and this is the first time I have heard one of our needs is more music. LaMarr Bruce (Continued on page 14)

Is the NAACP still relevant? Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford When was the last time someone asked you to take out a membership into the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People? Did you say “I am not colored”? Yes, the name is outdated and should be addressed by its membership. My father was proud to be a lifetime member. I took out a membership once in 1988 and have not been asked since. There is something missing here. Usually single memberships represent the decision making of an organization like this. The federation or chapters were once the backbone of such a “national” association. But in America chapters or Black chapters cannot be depended on for funding and strong leadership. The largest NAACP chapter is the city of Detroit. Considering the economic state of Detroit paints a dismal picture of this once proud and strong association. During the Civil Rights Era the NAACP swelled in chapters and individual memberships. We won a lot during the famed Era but the fervor sort of lost its need after obtaining the goal and implementation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The next time you have a civil rights complaint call your

Harry C. Alford local chapter of the NAACP and see what happens – usually NOTHING! What drives the NAACP today are major corporations and Hollywood. Within this structure are major trade unions who have no commitment to diversity. The big bucks they give annually are a method of buying peace and public relations. Construction unions are some of the

most racist organizations in this nation. But you can’t tell that to the leadership of the NAACP. “Construction unions have been our friends. I don’t know why any Black group would criticize them,” Ben Jealous, former NAACP President. Of late, a few chapters of the association are starting to see the picture and raise protests about the trades. New York City is a fine example of that (http://nydn.us/2bw78RC). If the national leadership continues down that path the NAACP is destined to fail. Right now the association membership levels are below 1% of the Black population of our nation. What initially caused the existence of the NAACP (1909)? It was a northern white liberal group known as the Niagara Movement. This group came together and placed W.E.B. DuBois as their spokesperson and “Leader.” His immediate role was to discredit and oppose Booker T. Washington, Founder of the National Negro Business League (1900). Mr. Washington’s work and mission (economic empowerment of the American Negro) was indeed a powerful message. He built 39 chapters in cities throughout the South. One of his most popular one was Greenwood, outside of Tulsa, Oklahoma. It became famous (known

as Black Wall St.) and was burned to the grown by racist elements - Not long after the mysterious death of Mr. Washington. There would be other examples of destruction of Black business districts emulating the teachings of Mr. Washington. If ever you visit Tuskegee University, a fine institution that Mr. Washington built and developed with the support of Henry Ford, Andrew Carnegie, President Theodore Roosevelt and other national leaders, please stop to hear the actual Atlanta Debates. This is a recording of the debates between Mr. DuBois and Booker T. Washington. In my opinion, Mr. Washington won. Today, many of the local chapters of the NAACP are tribal. For instance, when I lived in Indianapolis the local president would not accept nor sell any new memberships. Why? He had enough votes to win any upcoming elections and he would not dilute that advantage through growth of his chapter. Many people in Indianapolis would complain to the National Office but that didn’t seem to do any good. The NAACP must break away from the “grasp” that unions have on the chapters and their Board of Directors. Remember that stupid practice of “School Busing”? Our

children would get up at very early hours to be bused across town and then return home in the late afternoon. Offended whites would leave that school and put their children into private schools. This went on to the detriment of Black students and families alike. It was like we were forcing our children onto people who weren’t going to treat them on an equitable basis. All this harm as a result of lobbying from school bus drivers’ unions and bus manufacturers. Now, there is a new wave of attack on our young students. The NAACP has just taken a position against Charter Schools. It is very clear that Charter Schools are producing fine Black students who otherwise would be under performing. Have they lost their minds? No, they are just following that path to inefficiency that was created by the Niagara Movement. Charter Schools are an escape from a losing environment and a door opener for success. They want to keep our children from this opportunity. Go figure. Mr. Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce. Website: www.nationalbcc.org Email: halford@nationalbcc.org

Trump Supporters Think They’re on a Reality Show By Bill Fletcher, Jr. (NNPA Newswire Columnist) There is something that I have found particularly odd in this election season and there have been many things that have been odd. There have been consistent media reports of interviews with supporters of Republican nominee Donald Trump that indicate that many of them do not take seriously his various pronouncements. Trump supporters have been reported making comments—after being confronted with Trump’s declarations, such as his call to build a wall on the border with Mexico and his suggestion to block Muslims from entering the USA — that they do not believe that Trump really means this, nevertheless, they will vote for him. What does one make of people discounting the assertions of a candidate, particularly provocative assertions I might add, and yet supporting him? Do these supporters think that this is a large-scale reality show? Here is my theory. Trump sup-

ideologically committed to backing virtually each and every word of their candidate. They see Trump as the champion of their revengeseeking politics, hoping to “Make America White Again.” The second group is made up of people who are scared to death and want to shake things up, yet shake things up in a particular way. They don’t want a woman to be elected President and they don’t want what they perceive to be ‘more of the same.’ They are scared of the changing demographics of the United States; they’re scared about their economic precariousness; they’re scared about a world that they cannot understand, let alone control. Trump represents the equivalent of rolling the dice and hoping that they don’t come up “snake eyes.” This second group is living in a world of self-deception. There is no reason for anyone to disbelieve Trump. At a minimum his rhetoric is inflammatory and erratic. If these supporters do not believe that Trump will actually do what he suggests that he will do, what do they think that he will do? It

appears that they do not care, as long as it is different from what these supporters are currently experiencing. Actually, I do not believe that this supposed lack of concern with what Trump will do (if elected) is innocent and frivolous. Trump is asserting a nightmare. There is nothing hopeful, inclusive, democratic or just in what he is arguing. Nothing that he is arguing is neutral, bi-partisan or post-partisan. His arguments all flow from his basic notion that White America is allegedly suffering at the hands of minorities, liberals, the rest of the world, etc. To put it another way, these supporters don’t just want to shake things up. They want to shake things up in a manner that they believe gives them a leg up on the rest of the world. It is not just the candidate who is dangerous; the movement backing him is even more frightening. Bill Fletcher, Jr. is a talk show host, writer and activist. Dr. Conrad Worrill, Director/Professor, Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS), located at 700 East Oakwood Blvd, Chicago, Illinois, 60653, 773268-7500, Fax: 773-268-3835. E-mail: c-worrill@neiu.edu, Website: www.neiu.edu/ccics, Twitter: @CCICS_Chicago.

Dr. Conrad Worrill Throughout most of our lives, African people in America have been told if you get a good education you can get a good job. African people in Africa were told something similar. If you get a good education your con-

EDUCATION FOR WHAT? dition in life will improve. In the early part of the twentiethcentury until the late 1960s and early 1970s, the thrust was to encourage African people in America to at least get a high school diploma so that they could be eligible for a job in a significant segment of the work force. The explosion of the 1960s Civil Rights and Black Power Movements forced colleges and universities to admit Africans in America to their predominately white colleges and universities in large numbers. Today, African people in America are encouraged to get a college education so they can get a good job. The education market has been saturated to the extent that a high school diploma of the 1930s, 40s, 50s, and 60s, in most instances, has the same meaning as a college degree today. That meaning is one of a college degree, qualifying people for entry-level jobs in the U. S. labor market, except for those instances where people have been trained in specialized fields at the undergraduate level. What we hear repeatedly today is that we must concentrate on African people in America reading, writing, and math skills at the elementary and secondary levels so they can compete for the jobs that will be available in U.S. multinational corporations in the twenty-first-century, driven by the world of technology and computers. Many of our ancestors in the eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twenti-

eth-centuries, who were concerned with the issue of education, asked the question— education for what? It is quite clear that the major direction of U. S. educational policy has been to train and educate African people to work for white people. That is, to teach them to read, write, and compute, so they will be prepared to work for us. In a paper written by our great ancestor Dr. Jacob Carruthers several years ago, entitled, “Black Intellectuals and The Crisis In Black Education,” he observed, “When the chattel slave system was destroyed by the Civil War, one of the first acts of the victors was to provide for Black schooling on a wide scale. The northern industrialists through their philanthropic alter egos began finding and establishing Black colleges. These colleges were intended to sit atop a Negro education system.” Further Dr. Carruthers wrote, “By the turn of the century, even southern whites were making use of this Negro education system to facilitate the transition from the old chattel to a new, but equally effective, system of Black exploitation.” Carruthers explains, “The new system depended upon the cultivation of a Black elite to serve as examples for the masses of Blacks and to demonstrate the rewards of obedience.” The educated Black elite, Carruthers points out, “demonstrated

time and time again their ability to do what they had been trained to do. Eventually, a few of them were invited to manage the segregated colleges that were established to train Black teachers. In this manner, a small, educated Negro elite became overseers of the educational affairs of millions of Black people.” This model of education, that continues today, was established by socalled leading white educators in this country who met at Lake Mohonk, New York (a resort area) on June 4-6, 1890, and June 3-5, 1891 to read and discuss papers on what they officially called the “Negro Question.” Again, Dr. Carruthers writes that at the end of the second conference “they had decided that the primary things that Blacks had to be taught were morality and the dignity of labor (i.e., working for white folks).” African people in the United States have a rich tradition of leaders who have taken issue with the white conceptualization of the mission of education of African people in America. David Walker, Henry Highland Garnet, Henry McNeal Turner, Martin R. Delany, and Edward Wilmot Blyden were nineteenthcentury advocates that the education of African people should be designed to assist us in doing for ourselves. In the twentieth-century, leaders such as Marcus Garvey, Carter G. Woodson, Elijah Muhammad, and Malcolm X, all spoke and wrote con-

sistently about the need for African people to develop an education program aimed at developing African people “to do for self.” In other words, we are still challenged today to create an education climate that inspires African youth in America to understand that the purpose of education is to develop the skills and historical understanding of the past as it relates to the present and future in preparation for working for self and the liberation of African people. This is the challenge of the twenty-first-century— to defeat the one hundred year tradition established by white educational leaders who created curricula for Africans in America designed to prepare them to work for white folks. Our esteemed ancestor, Dr. John Henrik Clarke reminded us repeatedly, that, “history is the clock that people use to tell their political and cultural time of day. It is also a clock that they use to find themselves on the map of human geography. The role of history in the final analysis is to tell a people where they have been and what they have been, where they are and what they are. Most importantly, the role of history is to tell a people where they still must go and what they still must be. To me the relationship of a people to their history is the same as the relationship of a child to its mother.” The purpose of education must always be “for us to do for ourselves!”

DOES ENTREPRENEURSHIP MATTER? By Julianne Malveaux The most recent data on minority-owned firms in the United States was collected in 2012 (and released at the end of 2015). It showed that the number of minority-owned firms rose from 5.8 million in 2007 to 8 million in 2012. Hispanic-owned firms grew the most rapidly – by 46 percent to 3.3 million. African Americanowned firms grew by 34.5 percent to 2.6 million. Asian owned firms grew by 23.8 percent to 1.9 million. Women-owned firms grew by 26.8 percent compared to firms owned by men growing by just 6.8 percent. Since the total number of firms grew by just 2 percent, to 27.6 million, the growth in minority and womenowned firms could define the way that business is being done in our country. It is possible that the growth in minority- and women-owned firms could provide opportunities for women and people of color outside the traditional labor mar6

ket, outside traditional corporate work. Maybe. But the ugly underside of the growth data is the fact that only 11 percent of minorityowned firms have employees. In other words, most of these firms are one-person businesses, providing consulting and other services from just one individual. Only 4 percent of African American owned firms – just 109,137 of the total 2.6 million businesses – have employees. The growth in new businesses, then, may be the result of people forming businesses when they lost or left jobs, as opposed to people entering business with an entrepreneurial vision that includes hiring and expansion. Why aren’t more Black entrepreneurs trying to do more? It isn’t for lack of ideas. Not a day goes by when I don’t run into someone with a great, new, business idea. Sure, some of them are whacky, and some are far-fetched, but many are solid ideas that can’t get off the ground because people need capital to start a business. The biggest challenge that Black entrepreneurs face is ac-

Dr. Julianne Malveaux cess to capital, or the difficulties experienced in attempting to get a bank loan. Some of the reasons have to do with lack of collateral, or with the fact that African Americans experience a wealth gap so large that few can jump through the fiscal hoops that many banks require. Some estimates say that whites have between 13 and 18 times more wealth than African Americans. They have an advantage when going to lenders. African

American entrepreneurs, good ideas notwithstanding, won’t get a loan unless they have assets or collateral to back the loan up. Yet it is in the national interest to promote minority entrepreneurship and particularly Black entrepreneurship. Even Republican President Richard Nixon “got it” when he authorized the establishment of the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) and used the term “economic justice” to talk about the barriers to entrepreneurship that African Americans had experienced. Though the agency, established in 1968, has been in existence for nearly 50 years, many African Americans find entry barriers as daunting as they were when the agency was established. Why? Many, thinking that we live in a “post-racial” era have reverted to old patterns of giving opportunities and contracts to their friends, instead of tapping a diverse pool of businesses that can deliver. Others say they can’t deal with those tiny companies that have no employees and just one principal scrambling

to do all the work. Small minority businesses do themselves no favors when they can’t manage the scope and scale of work that some larger employers require. For all the barriers and challenges of scale, minority businesses are important because they are more likely to hire minority workers, those affected by the persistent unemployment rate gap. Too, minority businesses, when they have employees, are more likely to hire and advance women in executive positions. Entrepreneurship matters because it expands the realm of possibility for people of color, allows people to participate fully in the economic realm, and provides people with the opportunity to earn profits and to share those profits with family and community. In order to fully encourage minority business, Fortune 500 companies must commit to supplier diversity and set numerical procurement goals. Federal, state and local governments, too, must ensure (Continued on page 7) www.chicagocrusader.com

Support the Freedom-Fighting Legacy of George E. Curry By Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr. The freedom struggle and Civil Rights Movement of Black people in America and throughout the world has lost another courageous iconic, freedom fighter journalist, leader: George Edward Curry. The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) salutes, respects, and supports the freedomfighting legacy of George Curry. NNPA publishers, editors, journalists, and photographers from across the nation attended the “Celebration of Life” home-going service for George Curry in Tuscaloosa, Alabama at Weeping Mary Baptist Church on Saturday, August 27, 2016. George at the age of 69 died from heart failure on August 20, 2016 in Takoma Park, Maryland. George Curry was our beloved Editor-In-Chief of the NNPA News Wire Service and after decades of outstanding contributions and service to the Black Press in America, George evolved to be admired by fellow journalists as the “Dean of Black Press Columnists.” As a foot soldier in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, I person-

CHICAGO JAZZ FESTIVAL LABOR DAY WEEKEND: A favorite Labor Day Weekend tradition, the Chicago Jazz Festival, takes place Thursday through Sunday, September 1 - September 4, and showcases free live performances by Chicago’s vast jazz talent alongside national and international jazz legends and artists. It is held in Millennium Park, 201 E. Randolph Street, Chicago, IL 60601, and the Chicago Cultural Center. This year marks the Centennial of the Great Migration, the mass movement of more than 6 million African Americans from the rural South to the urban Midwest, Northeast and West beginning in 1916. Chicago was a key destination for that transformative relocation, with a momentous impact on the development of jazz as a vernacular music from New Orleans into an industry in Chicago. That history will be marked in several ways throughout this year’s festival. ally have been blessed to have known and worked with George Curry as a fearlessly effective freedom fighter. If I could find one word in the English language to describe the professional and brotherly tenacity of George Curry, it would the word “courageous.” He used his pen and his wit to openly challenge injustice in the face and presence of oppression. George had the courage to both write and speak truth to power without compromise of principle or ethics. The Reverend Jesse Jackson and The Reverend Al Sharpton both travelled to Tuscaloosa to pay tribute and to eulogize the memory and legacy of George Curry. Rev. Jackson affirmed, “George was a freedom fighter.” Dr. Charles Steele Jr., President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), also a native of Tuscaloosa and lifelong friend of George paid tribute to Curry’s leadership and activism as a “freedom movement” journalist. In the eulogy rendered last Saturday, Rev. Sharpton emphasized, “”George never knew he was much more of a minister to me than I

Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr. ever was to him… George Curry not only helped to mentor and bring along students and the next generation, but he also did it to many of us that you see out there on the front line.” Sharpton concluded that Curry was “part of a long tradition, but he was one of a kind.” Roland Martin, accomplished

news anchor for TV One and former editor of the Chicago Defender, as well as a lifelong colleague of George Curry, passionately stated, “There was no newspaper, no magazine George Curry could not have worked for, but he chose to work in Black media… He chose to do that because he said there has to be an independent voice that is unapologetic, that thinks about Black people from the moment they wake up to the moment they go to sleep.” The passing of George Curry now raises the question of “Who will take his pen?” Who will step forward to keep the freedom-fighting legacy of George Curry alive today and into the future? Before George died, he had established www.EmergeNewsOnline.com. The NNPA supports George’s legacy and we encourage all to support the efforts to ensure that what George envisioned and worked hard to establish will continue to grow and expand with success in the marketplace. In my remarks on behalf of the NNPA at the Celebration of Life of George Curry, I shared that, “I have been in the presence of Mal-

colm X. I have been in the presence of The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I have been in the presence of the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan. I’ve been in the presence of some of our giants, male and female, but I want to say on this public record, in my life, I’ve never met a brother that’s had more courage than George Curry.” As we face the immediate future, let us all first be thankful that we had the opportunity and blessing to work with George Curry. But we must show our gratitude by making sure that his courageous example of journalism continues. There is an African proverb that says, “Freedom fighters do not in spirit pass away, their spirit lives to inspire the next generation of freedom fighters.” We all know that George Curry supported mentoring and guiding the development of young journalists who are committed to the Black Press. Such is the case that the NNPA is now working with our Discover the Unexpected (DTU) NNPA Journalism Fellows. May these young journalist and others be guided by the great example set by George E. Curry.

Teen driving safety tops parents’ list of concerns 10 Chevys now offer technology to help parents with biggest worry In the month of August this year more than 360,000 teens will become eligible for a restricted driver’s license in most states – and with that, a lot of parents will experience new levels of stress. According to a Harris Poll survey commissioned by Chevrolet, more parents with teens worry about their child driving (55 percent) more than any other area of parental stress, including drugs and alcohol (52 percent), sexual activity (49 percent) and academic performance (53 percent). Chevrolet recognizes this top concern for parents and, as a result, in addition to its suite of available active and passive safety features, offers Teen Driver Technology on 10 of its 2017 cars, trucks and SUVs. Chevrolet’s Teen Driver includes an industry-first in-vehicle report card that shows how the teen drove and provides a way for parents to discuss best practices. “I, like many of our employees, am a parent of teenagers, so we personally understand the anxiety of

having a teen driver in the house,” said Steve Majoros, director of marketing, Chevrolet Cars and Crossovers. “And while we can’t control a teen’s behavior when they are in a car without a parent, Chevrolet’s Teen Driver Technology can remind them to buckle up and avoid speeding, while our other available active safety features can help to alert them in certain situations when they’re making less-than-perfect driving decisions.” Teen Driver supports certain safe driving practices by muting the radio or the audio of any paired device when front seat occupants aren’t wearing their safety belts. It also gives audible and visual warnings when the vehicle is traveling faster than preset speeds, and allows parents to limit the maximum volume of the radio. 10

Additionally, available active safety features are automatically enabled and incapable of being manually disabled when Teen Driver is in use. These features may include: • Lane Departure Warning • Lane Keep Assist • Front and Rear Park Assist • Side Blind Zone Alert • Rear Cross Traffic Alert • Forward Collision Alert • Forward Automatic Braking • Rear Automatic Braking • Front Pedestrian Braking • Stability Control • Traction Control • Daytime Running Lamps/ Automatic Light Control “As a mother of two, it’s extremely important to find solutions that can help young drivers on the road,” said MaryAnn Beebe, Chevrolet safety engineer. “Chevrolet developed this system as a tool that can give teens some additional coaching 638 PARENTS/LEGAL guardians of a 13-17 year old teen indicated teen driving is their chief as they’re gaining experience. Public Broadcast Service airs ‘All the Difference’ college documentary September 12 By Raymond Ward READ A BOOK!: The Chicago Public Library Foundation and Chicago Public Library will present the annual Carl Sandburg Literary Awards to best-selling authors Erik Larson (Devil in the White City) for non-fiction and Scott Turow (Presumed Innocent) for fiction on Wednesday, October 26 at The Forum on the campus of the University of Illinois at Chicago. The 21st Century Award, which is presented to a Chicago-based emerging author, will be presented to short story writer Amina Gautier (At Risk, Now We Will Be Happy). Bill Kurtis and Scott Simon will return as emcee and moderator, respectively. One of the highlights of the annual benefit is that each guest has the opportunity to engage in dinner table conversation with an esteemed author with ties to Chicago. This year, guests will be seated with one of more than 70 notable authors including: former Chicago Bear and leadership expert Desmond Clark; acclaimed

Desmond Clark kitchen designer Mick DeGiulio; WBEZ correspondent Natalie Moore, author of a new book about Chicago’s south side; Grammy Award-winning poet, spoken word artist, recording artist and author J. Ivy; Marc and Maureen Schulman of Eli’s Cheesecake; fitness consultant to Michael Jordan, Tim Grover; and barbeque chef Meathead Goldwyn, just to name a few. “At no other event do guests have the opportunity to have intimate discussions with such a diverse and impressive group of authors,” said Foundation President & CEO Rhona Frazin. “Year after year, I hear from so many of our attendees that they met an author at their table that they may not previously have been familiar with but who is now one of their favorites.” The Carl Sandburg Literary Awards Dinner is a fundraising event for the Chicago Public Library Foundation and Chicago Public Library and celebrates a writer’s collective body of work. Many of the world’s most important authors have been recognized with the prize, which is regarded as one of the nation’s most prestigious literary prizes. The annual celebration is one of the highlights of Chicago’s social calendar, hailed as “the smartest event in Chicago” by Crain’s Chicago Business and attracts nearly 800 members of Chicago’s civic and cultural communities. Past winners of the Carl Sandburg Literary Awards include: Mavis Staples, Isabel Allende, Alice Walker, Tom Wolfe, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Nikki Giovanni, Stephen Sondheim, Roger Ebert, David Mamet, and Toni Morrison, to name a few. The event raises funds to support the learning initiatives of Chicago Public Library including Rahm’s Readers Summer Learning Challenge, One Book, One Chicago, YOUmedia, Teacher in the Library and CyberNavigators. POV’s “All the Difference” chronicles odds-defying success of collegebound African-American males. Filmed over five years, this documentary follows Robert and Krishaun from Chicago’s South Side as they pursue dreams of higher education, middle-class careers. As “All the Difference” shows, both Robert and Krishaun faced huge obstacles growing up. Robert was just 17 months old when his mother was killed by his father. He and his six siblings were taken in and raised by their grandmother. Krishaun, like many of his family members, joined a gang. But both also had a key asset: the Urban Prep Charter Academy for Young Men, where mentors and teachers encouraged them not only to get through high school but to go beyond. And while family stability has not been constant, what remains plays a crucial role, especially for Robert. THE BOOKWORM SEZ “Writings on the Wall: Searching for a New Equality Beyond Black and White”

by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Raymond Obstfeld c.2016, Liberty Street Books $27.95 / $33.95 Canada 256 pages The fix won’t be quick. It never is. There’s no magic wand to change the things that’ve been on your mind lately: social issues, inequality, poverty, politics, apathy, violence. Those ills didn’t arrive quick and they won’t leave quick, but says Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, they can be repaired. In his new book “Writings on the Wall” (with Raymond Obstfeld), he explains… When people ask Abdul-Jabbar what he might’ve become, had he not played NBA basketball, his answer often surprises them: he would’ve been a history teacher. History fascinates him – especial-

ly in the way it reflects racism, religious intolerance, and gender issues. In history, as in current events, the truth is sometimes bent. Take, for instance, politics, which is on everyone’s mind. We rail and complain about issues and promises broken and we like to think it’s all out of our hands. The truth is that we are the problem: we grow complacent about things we don’t want, acting “like children when it comes to politics” and hoping the government will “take care of us,” rather than taking steps to fix the system ourselves. White people may deny that racism exists, says Abdul-Jabbar, while Black people know that it does. Racism didn’t stop with the election of the nation’s first Black president. It doesn’t end with melting-pot cultural appropriation. It actually comes in two forms, he says, and education is the first step in dealing with it, not eliminating it, because racism is always going to be around. On religion, we should never lose sight of the fact that this “country was founded by religious outcasts running for their lives from persecution for their beliefs.” When it comes to equality for women, we must embrace the true meaning of “feminist” and adhere to what we tell pollsters

when it comes to gender. We need to look at the media and how to maximize its potential, and we must take better care of our seniors. “We cannot afford to just wring out hands and depend on the kindness of strangers,” AbdulJabbar says. “We have to bring about change on our own.” Remember when your grade school teacher told you to put on your thinking cap? You’ll need it again as you’re reading “Writings on the Wall.” Authors Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Raymond Obstfeld don’t just examine issues that are on the minds of every American. They turn them over and blow them apart, looking for solutions that can be accomplished and chiding us gently for not already working. That makes for a thoughtdemanding, intellectually heavy book but it’s also a worthy call to action; you may also be delighted to see that Abdul-Jabbar doesn’t miss a chance to add a touch of the personal here, which includes quietly unexpected humor. Readers with the right mindset will find this book to be informative and entertaining but be prepared to take your time to get the most from it. There aren’t a lot of pages inside “Writings on the Wall,” but what’s here is deep and wide and nowhere near quick.

SOUTHSIDE WITH YOU By Bonnie DeShong The year is 1989. The place is the South Side of Chicago. A young law firm associate named Barack Obama (Parker Sawyers) asks his supervisor/mentor at the law office he is working at for the summer, attorney Michelle Robinson (Tika Sumpter) to attend a rally with him. What he fails to tell her is that he has planned a whole day and evening of events. This film is based on the real first date of now President Obama and

first lady Michelle. We meet the professional Michelle who is working her way up in a law firm at a time when women, especially women of color, had to prove themselves to be as good if not better than the average man in the business world. We can tell she is attracted to this young law associate, but feels that it would be unprofessional to allow herself to act on this attraction. We also meet the smart but messy, cigarette smoking, community activist law associate Barack Obama, who is attracted to his mentor and

strategically plans a way to take her on a date by stretching the truth. I was smiling from the beginning of this film to the end. Tika Sumpter plays Michelle with many layers. We see the love she has for her parents, their work ethics, and family. She is proud of them and she has worked hard to live up to, not only their expectations, but also her own. Patrick Sawyers is amazing as Barack. The easy going good guy with a little bit of an edge, the guy who sees what he wants and goes after it, and the venerable guy who still has to forgive and accept before he can move on. Both Tika and Patrick play Michelle and Barack with ease. They don’t try to be Michelle and Barack…they are them. Playing the two most visible people in the world told can be rather overwhelming. Patrick and Tika didn’t over play it. I believed them because they were so natural in their portrayals. We are taken on a full day with the couple. Michelle thinking she is being picked up to go to a rally when actually Barack is picking her up to go on a date. After a while I was caught up into the day. His white classmates, he says, “look at me like, ‘Oh what the heck are you doing here?’” But his infectiously upbeat nature, along with encouragement from a college adviser and a girlfriend, help him move forward. Fisk University, in contrast, is “like a family” for Krishaun. It also provides numerous social distractions that don’t help his studies. From playing basketball to feeling the sting of rejection from a fraternity he hoped to join, “anything can get me off track real quick,” he says. Throughout their four-year college experiences, both face continuous pressure to maintain the necessary grade point average to qualify for financial aid. Finding summer jobs is an additional struggle: In Chicago, according to the film, 91% of Black teenage males are unemployed. Krishaun also suffers a devastating loss when his 17-year-old brother, De-

vonte, is killed in a drive-by shooting. Krishaun blames his own absence, in part, for the tragedy. “While I was here, I was protecting him. I came back to a little brother that was in the streets. I feel like I let him down when I left because I was all he knew.” Despite the hurdles, Krishaun and Robert succeed. Their emotional graduation ceremonies illuminate the significance of their achievements. They have not only beaten the odds, but have positioned themselves for entry into the middle class. And both have made deliberate choices to take jobs that will allow them to give back to the community. “When I finally see my mother again, I will look at her and smile,” Robert says tearfully. “Look how far I’ve made it. I’ve made you proud.” He departs to work at a Columbia, S.C. high school that is part of the national organization City Year, which enlists young adults in a year of service supporting at-risk students. Krishaun makes good on a

promise to work at Urban Prep, the school that helped him find a new life. “When I go back to Englewood, I feel like LeBron when he goes back to Cleveland!” he exclaims with pride. “I’m doing it for my community and my ’hood.” While Robert and Krishaun are focused on the future, they have not forgotten where they came from. They offer advice to other young men who might dream of following in their footsteps. “If you believe in yourself, there’s no telling what you can do,” says Robert. Krishaun, whose new life includes fatherhood, says his newborn son “is starting many steps ahead of where I started. I feel that nothing is impossible now.” “It only takes one generation to dramatically change the destiny of a family, and when families change, communities change,” said director Tod Lending. “Robert and Krishaun exemplify that change. They made it because their mentors, teachers, academic advisers, family members and pastors believed in them and taught them to believe in themselves. “Robert and Krishaun had struggles and at times came close to dropping out,” Lending continues, “But the support they had made all the difference, and so they succeeded. If this type of very affordable support is made available to all young men growing up in the chaos and despair of poverty, we will see a whole new generation bring an end to that cycle of poverty. I think our country desperately needs to make this happen.” Source for stats mentioned above: Black Lives Matter: The Schott 50 State Report on Public Education and Black Males, Schott Foundation for Public Education, February 2015. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Continued from page 4)

City is misdirecting dollars Dear Editor: The city of Chicago opens a new park here, gives a tax break to a business there, builds something only one alderman and the mayor want; but it can’t seem to find money for our most pressing problem - violence, namely shootings and killings. Chicago needs to follow the state’s lead and fund CeaseFire. The state last month used more than $4 million from its “stopgap” budget to bolster CeaseFire’s work. It is the only organization that has shown repeatedly through scientific evalua14

tions that they prevent killings and shootings in the city. I don’t mean any disrespect to any others who are out here battling violence, but the reality is they don’t have the long history (more than a decade) that CeaseFire does, and the empirical data the organization does. Personally, too many of these groups that are now professing they are stopping or reducing violence are like the “pop up” retailers we have been seeing the last couple of years. One day they are here and the next day gone. Make no mistake about it we need as many people and groups as we can get addressing the violence and shooting issue. However, there needs to be a lead organization and to me that should be CeaseFire. They already have men and women who

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2016

can intervene in situations where someone is looking to shoot or kill another person. CeaseFire hired these people they call “credible messengers” and are paying them a living wage. That is a big deterrent to returning to their old lives of crime. Given the reality that when CeaseFire is properly funded the level of killings and shootings drop in the areas they are working; it only makes sense to expand their funding so their credible messengers can work in more areas and prevent more killings. The CeaseFire model also is the only one that addresses violence as a health issue. The methodology they use is based on understanding the brain and tendency toward violence comes from more than socio/environmental surround-

ings. The City of Chicago also spends tens of millions of dollars on police overtime. A huge portion of those dollars could be saved by underwriting some of CeaseFire efforts. It is a much more effective use of dollars to stop a shooting than to spend countless hours investigating it, paying for overtime and coming up emptyhanded. A recent story in one of the daily newspapers reported that Chicago not only has the lowest percentage of successful shooting investigations, the number of detectives is at least 1,000 lower than what is considered the optimal level. For the last couple of years, CeaseFire has been underfunded. Now the new executive director, Mark Payne, is talking to every foundation and

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

potential funding source to shore up the organization’s financial position. In my opinion this makes no sense. In New York City, which has far fewer shootings per year, the city council appropriated nearly $14 million for its CeaseFire-like program. There is a similar amount allocated for the program in Los Angeles What is the Chicago City Council and mayor waiting for? CeaseFire needs to be included in every city budget. Chicago is supposed to be broke, yet the administration keeps finding funds for pet projects. CeaseFire should be on that same list with at least $10 million in funding. The city needs to stop misdirecting dollars. Riley Cross

A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe Your reputation does not determine your destination. Why, because you are the sum total of your experiences. There are few people who would not welcome the chance to take a chunk of their life and erase certain chapters into oblivion. The truth is you can never escape your past—it’s like your shadow because it’s always there and you can’t outrun it. Embrace it. What you are experiencing right now is a result of your past thoughts. Your present situation is a result of your past thoughts—even if it was one second ago—it’s still your past. Perhaps what you consider a mistake is what

makes you unique. Actually, those mis-steps are minor in the grand scheme of things but major as they are marks of greatness for your life. Just for the record, God only uses people who make mistakes—who have an imperfect past. No one on this earth is perfect—no one is exempt! Everyone encounters dark chapters in their lives whether voluntarily through ignorance or as a victim of circumstance of bad choices. We all are ex- something but if we allow God—He can take your misery and give you a mission. Test will become a testimony and grief can be replaced with grace. Isaiah 61:3 states, “… He will give you a crown of

beauty for your ashes” and Psalm 30:11, “You have turned my mourning into dancing…” Plain and simple we have all been tore up from the floor up—straight up jacked up. But remember God specializes in things impossible—there is nothing too hard for God including forgiving your past. Let’s revisit some of the most noted bible characters that God used mightily. These men of God had messed up tainted lives. Paul was a serial killer, David was a murderer and adulterer, Moses was a fugitive and Peter lied and denied Jesus Christ. In other words—all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). I believe God allows us to mess

Effie Rolfe

up so we don’t boast in our own abilities and works. Trials and challenges of life often makes us stronger, better, wiser, thankful and more compassionate people. Your past should not be your autobiography, but rather a reference point. Since, you can’t drive forward looking through the rearview mirror, resist allowing your past to rob you of your future. It is an active part of who you are—God wants to use All of you. He is looking for ordinary people available for service that will give Him glory. We should be willing vessels to allow His works to shine bright like a diamond in the sky. As we embrace the 4th quarter of 2016 in preparation of

2017, don’t look back— you’re not going that way. Instead look forward to a better—bigger and brighter future that is more than you could ever imagine as you make your life print in this world.
