undreds of protesters descended on downtown Chicago on Sept. 12 to send a direct message to Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner whose policies they say are destroying Illinois families. Along with the Fight for $15 Movement, protesters say Rauner is bad for Illinois for not paying people a living wage, cuts to social services and vetoing legislation that would help ease burdens. They came for personal reasons many of them said, but they also see the bigger picture. “What kind of a society and state do I want to live in?” is the question Darlene Roberts of Hillside asked herself before deciding to participate in the protest. “I make a comfortable living, but what good is that when the people who live next door to me are struggling? CPD make arrest in Sept. 14 arson murders By J. Coyden Palmer A Cook County judge on Wednesday denied bond for a man accused of setting a fire that killed four people including three children last month in a South Chicago neighborhood. Reginald Hester, 51, is charged with four counts of first-degree murder.
Reginald Hester REGINALD HESTER OF the 8000 block of South Essex has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder after he intentionally set a fire on Aug. 23rd that killed four people, Cook County prosecutors alleged. The fire in the 8100 block of South Essex killed three children and one adult male.
Prosecutors at his bond hearing alleged Hester set the building on fire after he had given $10 to a woman, who had agreed to perform a sexual act on him, but instead reneged and left him outside the building. Hester had originally been questioned by police the night of the fire, but was released due to a lack of evidence. He was taken into custody a second time on Sept. 13 in the first block of South Waller without incident. Prosecutors say Hester gave a videotaped confession about the crime. On Aug. 23, shortly after 1:30 a.m., seven-year-old Shaniya Staples died along with her two younger sisters: Melanie Watson, three months and Madison Watson, 4. The extraalarm arson fire spread through the two top floors of their South Side apartment building in the 8100 block of South Essex Avenue, collapsing the roof and sending residents scattering into the night to escape the intense heat and flames. Neighbors of the victims say they hope police have the right person. They say the neighborhood has been sad ever since the incident happened. People who normally are smiling and talking to neighbors in the morning are now hugging each other to deal with the pain. “Those little girls never had a chance to live their lives because of some evil person. It’s a horrible situation,” said Rose Black, who lives one

Chicago group on way to Washington in limbo Chicago group on way to Washington in limbo By Duke Omara It was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime and the intense preparations that stretched over the course of a year were meant to reflect the solemnity of the occasion. Instead, a delegation from a local civic group is in a state of limbo. Plans to attend the grand opening of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 24 were unexpectedly put on hold following the introduction of previously unannounced “timed entry passes” that set conditions for admission into the event. ning for the event would have been in vain. “These trips take planning and organizing in order to get hotels and transportation and most importantly, making sure the dates of events are correct and in order. This includes background checks for each delegate to tour the White House,” said Forte in a press statement. Adding to the group’s disappointment and further jeopardizing their plans, the White House tour, which had been planned to happen in conjunction with the museum visit, was cancelled in July. Now the museum tour is in doubt after the Smithsonian Institute introduced a new system of timed passes designed “to facilitate entry and alleviate extended wait times for the public.” According to the museum’s website, the timed passes, which became available on Aug. 27, are a mandatory condition for entry and will continue to be utilized for the foreseeable future. At the Chicago Crusader’s press time, it was not clear if tours that had been arranged before the implementation of the pass system would (Continued on page 3) www.chicagocrusader.com

CSU President Out after Nine Months By J. Coyden Palmer As things at Chicago State continue to decline, the man who has been president at the university on the South Side is leaving after nine months on the job. Thomas J. Calhoun’s departure comes the day after students who live in the university’s dormitories contacted the media about their living conditions. Students told how they have been living without hot water in the dorms for the past two weeks. They also said told there is no hot water in the cafeteria so a catering service has been providing meals to the students who pay over $8,000 a semester in tuition. A public posting of a Board of Trustee meeting agenda set for Sept. 16th has a vote on a separation agreement with Calhoun listed as one of the items on the meeting agenda. Calhoun’s sudden departure will lead to more questions about the university’s future. Chicago State has been dealing with a financial emergency since the beginning of this year. There were questions of whether or not the school would even be open for the fall semester due to the state’s failure to fund the school because no state budget has been passed. But lawmakers came up with a last minute deal, which keep Chicago State’s doors open. Calhoun himself just a few weeks ago said the university would weather the storm and he was looking forward to leading the way. But now he appears to be out and the Board will be naming an interim
replacement at Friday’s meeting. Robert Bionaz, head of the faculty union, said the faculty backs President Calhoun nearly 100 percent. He said losing Calhoun at this time will be costly for the university and added the university will again have to spend money they do not have to search for a new leader. “The Board has chosen a path guaranteed to create continued conflict, contention and uproar on this campus,” Bionaz said. He and others are calling for the removal of the entire Board, who are appointed by Governor Rauner. For years those with an interest in CSU have said the Board is a big part of the problems at Chicago State.
They said the Board members are usually people with political connections who see the position as a way to boost their own personal profiles without caring about the university or students. “It’s sad to see the President go,” said one student who was rushing off to class when she heard the news. “I guess we’re all going to be on our own.”

ILBCF mourns the loss of Ethel Styles Alexander Ethel Styles Alexander is a former State Representative and Senator that sponsored several legislations that showed her fearlessness as a leader to take a stand and to protect the vulnerable. She should never be forgotten for the example she set, the mentoring she did, and most importantly, for the person she was. Alexander was one of the Founding members of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus Foundation (ILBCF) and a longtime public service pioneer. Ethel Styles Alexander died Saturday, September 10, 2016. She was 91 years old. The Illinois Legislative Black Caucus Foundation offered the following statement: “The Illinois Legislative Black Caucus Foundation mourns the loss of former legislator and Black Cau-
cus member Ethel Styles Alexander. Her legacy of leadership in public service will continue to live on and serve as a reflection of continued commitment to our community. We offer our condolences to the family and friends of Ms. Alexander. We would like to thank the family for sharing Ms. Alexander with us while she served our great state.” Ethel Styles Alexander was born on January 16, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois. She attended Englewood High School and later earned a bachelor’s degree from Loop College, which is Harold Washington College today. Alexander worked as a clerk in the Cook County Circuit Court’s Records Department for 33 years. She was the first woman to be ap-

For groups such as Forte’s, the museum’s opening is the culmination of an effort that started shortly after the American Civil War and was formalized in 1915 when colored military veterans formed an organization to demand proper accommo- dations while visiting the then segregated nation’s capital. According to the Smithsonian Institute, the museum, built at a cost of $540 million, is “one of the largest and most complex building projects www.chicagocrusader.com

In addition, the NMAAHC will have the distinction of being the only national site that is exclusively devoted to the documentation of African American life, art, history and culture. The museum is slated to showcase some of the most iconic pieces of African American history from all eras, including a Harriet Tubman hymnal, and a lace shawl given to her by Queen Victoria in 1897. Other collections are a Tuskegee Airmen Trainer Plane used to prepare Tuskegee Airmen for World War II
combat duty and Emmett Till’s glass-topped casket from 1955. Till’s gruesome murder in Mississippi helped galvanize the civil rights movement and his death remains a seminal emblem of the African American experience during the Jim Crow period. Till is buried in Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip, a village in Cook County. Forte vowed that her delegation’s trip to Washington will go on, with or without the new pass requirements. The group also plans to visit the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, the U.S. Capitol Building and, she hoped, the opening ceremony of what she called the “historic event of waiting over 100 years” for the grand opening of the African American museum. “The timed passes process has left us saddened due to the way things were handled, but we will be in attendance.”

“TRUMPSPARENCY” As we move closer toward the 2016 presidential elections, the stakes are getting higher and the drama is increasing. This is clearly exemplified by the recent health crisis haunting the Hillary Clinton campaign. Donald Trump has been claiming for quite some time that Hillary Clinton is not healthy enough to be president. There have been all kinds of rumors about this, but recently, Secretary Clinton did have a really scary public health event. A videotape showed her collapsing and being helped into a limousine after attending a 15 year commemoration event for the 9/11 debacle. The image was shocking. The press and others are decrying Secretary Clinton’s lack of “transparency,” because it took her at least a week to admit that she was ill. Allegedly, she found out that she was diagnosed with pneumonia on the Friday before the 9/11 event, but did not share this with the public until after she was filmed collapsing. As a result, people are once again accusing her of being less that forthcoming with the truth. They are wondering if this is the only health problem she has, considering the fact that she had been seen coughing during the previous week, a condition that she attributed to “allergies.” It is really strange and unnerving that citizens are reacting so strongly to this situation. During the first President George Bush’s term, he actually collapsed during a dinner. He later recovered, but there was no great fallout. The second President Bush (“W”), collapsed after choking on peanuts. He ended up with bruises, yet, after a joke or two, discussion died down shortly after the event. People did not seriously question his ability to serve out his term, based on his health. Actually, people seem to expect that the president of the United States should be some type of perfect super human with no warts of any kind. This is unrealistic – anyone who plays politics is bound to have some dirty laundry that begs to be aired. So far, Secretary Clinton has admitted her errors, albeit after being confronted with the evidence. Donald Trump, on the other hand, does not seem to know how to apologize. He also does not evidently know what “transparency” means. The Trumpster is as slick as a thousand eels, and no matter how ridiculous his actions are, supporters are willing to give him a pass. They applaud him because he points out Clinton’s dishonesty while totally ignoring what he has done. It is really amazing: he has the support of probably every white supremacist on the planet, openly admires a Russian leader with a less than democratic stance, refuses to attend the NAACP National Convention, refuses to share his tax information, has not shared any details about his health, is accused of discriminating against Blacks in his real estate businesses, and has openly mocked women, the handicapped, a Gold Star family, a Hispanic judge, and all Muslims, yet he gets away without being accused of a lack of transparency by supporters. Trump, after basically ignoring Blacks, did an about-face when criticized about this. He suddenly attended several basically all white rallies wherein he talked about the problems in the Black community saying that the community should choose him because “they have nothing to lose.” Incredibly, this condescending claptrap has been swallowed up by some Black leaders; especially certain preachers, even before he belatedly visited a Black church. Why can’t they see through this obvious dishonesty? It is apparent that Donald Trump is about as transparent as a 20foot-thick lead wall. He has been caught in several obvious lies. Remember, he was an ardent “birther” who refused to believe that President Obama was born in the United States. Apparently, his type of “Trumpsparency” does not matter to the emotional sycophants who are willing to overlook his obvious flaws. Black Americans, however, had better closely examine his actions logically, without emotion, in order to understand the underlying truths fueling his candidacy because the community stands to lose a lot if this is not done! A luta continua.
Meat kills. That’s the conclusion from researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. The scientists say that even a small amount of meat can cause cancer, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. The scientists recently found that people who eat just 50 grams of processed meat per day— about two slices of ham or three thin slices of bacon—are 24 percent more likely to die from cardiovascular disease, and 32 percent more likely to suffer from diabetes. People who eat meat are also more likely to succumb to various cancers, including pancreatic, prostate, breast, and colon cancers. Because of this—and because meat production contributes to climate change, pollution, and other serious environmental problems—several European and Asian countries are urging people to eat considerably less meat. Isn’t it time the U.S did the same? We can help save the environment—and lives—by choosing tasty vegan foods rather than meat, eggs, and dairy products. Cuba Travel changes for the Better Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford It has been a long time coming but it has come at last. Our first interest in traveling to Cuba was in 1999. I was in Kingston, Jamaica working with our chapter there, Jamaican Chamber of Commerce. While we were walking down the street, we ran into the Cuban Ambassador for Jamaica. I was impressed. The brother was dressed like a typical professional brother from Chicago, Los Angeles or somewhere in the states. We were three minutes into the introductory conversation before he exclaimed, “When are you going to Cuba”? I retorted, “We are not allowed to go to Cuba.” He said, “That is a myth! You can go if you get a license from your government. Contact our consulate in Washington, DC and they will show you the process.” That began our official relationship with Cuba. This was under the Clinton Administration. We had sanctions with Cuba which meant you cannot do normal business or travel with the nation. There was a strict process to follow with the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).
Harry C. Alford OAFC was onerous but they did show us the path we had to take. We received the license within four months. It took a lot of back and forth but we remained persistent. Another requirement was to hire a certified (OFAC approved certified) travel agent. After approval it
took about two months to rally our members who were interested. 36 members of the National Black Chamber of Commerce were prepared to travel to this mysterious nation. A nation of people who were predominantly the same ethnicity as us. The trip was fantastic! African Americans were greeted with love by the Cubans. $10 lobster dinners; $3 bottles of Havana Club Rum, $10 cover charge at the famous Tropicana night club; best cigars in the world and fine accommodations to give lifetime memories. Six months later, we went back again. Word of our travel got around and our board members were thinking we could charter a 747 wide body on the next trip now that the word was out. But all of a sudden the “door” slammed shut. The Bush Administration had taken over and the process was quite different. We inquired about obtaining another license for travel and were told, “Forget about it!” There was a new “sheriff ” at OFAC and travel to Cuba virtually ceased unless you were a member of Congress or someone well connected along that level. That was
heartbreaking to us. For 12 years we were blocked from returning to our brothers and sisters 90 miles off the coast of Florida. Fortunately, the Obama Administration has a different view of things. Slowly, travel to Cuba began opening up again. So now, we have come to find out that traveling to Cuba is as easy as it has ever been. There are certain reasons for a group to travel to Cuba. Business groups are in that category. There are certain airplanes that are allowed to take such groups on a daily basis. Soon there will be American commercial flights going on a daily basis. The demand is making available hotels limited. However, a cottage industry in the nation is Airbnb. You can rent rooms from licensed Cuban citizens. Homes along the beaches and nice neighborhoods. The entire tailored package is quite reasonably priced. Some villas provide seven bedrooms with a bathroom for each, modern kitchen and a coastline view. With 7-14 people the cost is quite reasonable. The NBCC has determined that a resurgence of Cuba travel has arrived. We are forming an easy for-
mat that is consistent with the current rules. Our first visit will occur in late October and we are so excited! The beautiful people, fantastic art, Afro Cuban music (which originated directly from the Congo via slavery), beautiful people (physical fitness is required), perfect weather and anything the Caribbean has but at reasonable costs, tropical cuisine, historical sights and the tropical aura. It is going to be so nice to reconnect with our people! The drought is over! Our office is studying up on the process and will begin promoting consulting excursions for our members. On our first trip we will participate with the Cuba Chamber of Commerce in a business Trade Fair with over 4,500 participating exhibits at the FERIA Trade Show – see what we have been missing! Yes, my brothers and sisters it is time to reconnect. Mr. Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce. CFPB wins court victory over payday lender, CashCall By Charlene Crowell The fight for fair lending got a big boost on August 31 when a federal court rejected a payday loan collector’s attempt to evade consumer laws. The decision against CashCall, a California-based online payday and installment lender upheld the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s authority to investigate and fine lenders for unfair, abusive or deceptive practices. The court ruling is a key step in a legal battle that began nearly three years ago. In December 2013 and for the first time, CFPB sued to secure consumer refunds of illegally collected money. According to the filing, “defendants engaged in unfair, deceptive and abusive practices, including illegally debiting consumer checking accounts for loans that were void.” CFPB charged that Californiabased CashCall, its subsidiary WS Funding LLC, affiliate Delbert Services Corporation, a Nevada collection agency were all the same ownership. Loans ranging from $850- $10,000 were sold with upfront fees, lengthy repayment terms and interest rates as
Charlene Crowell high as 343 percent. CFPB charged that these loan terms violated state laws in at least 16 states that had in place licensing requirements, interest rate caps – or both. As early as 2009, Cash Call also partnered with Western Sky Financial, another company, to claim that tribal law rather than state law applied to their loans. Readers may recall a series of television ads promoting Western Sky’s quick and easy loans. (Continued on page 15)

Dr. Conrad Worrill The Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CC ICS) was established on September 8, 1966 during the early years of Northeastern Illinois University, which was founded in 1963. Dr. Donald Smith, one of the few Black professors and the first Director of the Center, provided the leadership in conceiving the idea and mobilizing the university community to support this project. However, one former Director of CCICS, the late Dr. Donn Bailey, revealed, “The educational aspirations and demands of the largely
Black inner city community in the mid-1960s were so forcefully and compellingly put that one can say that the community sired the Center for Inner City Studies.” Outstanding educational leaders in the Chicago inner city, such as Dr. Barbara Sizemore, Dr. Anderson Thompson, and grassroots community residents, gave Dr. Smith the support he needed to convince the college that such a project was necessary. Federal funding was granted from the Office of Education that provided the initial support for two years before becoming a permanent part of the university’s academic programs. He then gathered a brilliant staff of inner city educators from Chicago and across the nation, who developed the initial graduate CCICS curriculum. This distinguished group included Dr. Nancy Arnez (the second director of the Center), Dr. Donn Bailey (the third director), Dr. Edward Barnes, and Dr. Sonja Stone (the first Chair of the Department of Inner City Studies Education). Dr. Carol Adams served as the director from 2000-2003 and I, Dr. Conrad Worrill have served as the director since 2003. The first CCICS program was the federal funded, Experienced Teacher Fellowship Program (ETFP), a Master’s degree program for retraining inner city teachers, who were struggling to understand and serve the communities where they worked. The students came from many urban areas throughout the United
States. In 1968, this innovative experiment led the College of Education to establish the Department of Inner City Studies Education, with two Master’s degree programs; an M.A. in Inner City Studies Education (ICSE) and an M.Ed. in Inner City Studies. In 1970-71, the Center’s undergraduate program evolv ed from another federally funded program, the Career Opportunities Program (COP). This program resulted in the full certification of four hundred inner city Teacher Aides, who had virtually sprung from the inner city in the wake of the urban rebellions of the 1960s. Under the leadership of two brilliant African Centered faculty members, the late Dr. Jacob H. Carruthers and Dr. Anderson Thompson, CCICS endeavored, for over fiftyyears to develop a curriculum philosophy and theoretical framework that examine social experience from an African Centered perspective. The rewards of these efforts have been enriching for the academic community world-wide, as well as the inner city community. Through its curriculum arm, the Department of Inner City Studies Education (now an academic program in the Department of Educational Inquiry and Curriculum Studies) CCICS has successfully developed undergraduate and graduate programs. These programs combine Inner City Studies with a minor, Inner City Careers, African Caribbean Studies, experienced and prospective teacher programs, as well as the
development of the Mexican/Caribbean Studies Minor, which has now become a major in Latin and Latin American Studies. Some of these programs led CCICS to the development of other major thrusts. African Caribbean Studies spawned the Kemetic Institute and the establishment of the African Study Tours, which broadened the CCICS curriculum to include on-going international student and faculty participation. Also, the Kemetic Institute sponsors the Teaching About Africa (TAA) Program aimed at providing teaches with curriculum material to be used in all subjects concerning the contributions of Afri- can people from ancient times to the present. The Career Opportunity Program of the early 1970s was the foundation of the ICSE undergraduate program. Similarly, the Inner City Careers Minor has given birth to the collaboration with, and establishment of, a combined major in Elementary Education or Early Childhood Education that leads to a Language Arts Endorsement. Additionally, in recent years, CCICS has established the Illinois Transatlantic Slave Trade Commission Project (ITSTC) that conducts ongoing research on the slave trade and its continued impact on African people and the world. The Great Black Music Project (GBMP) is another addition to the vibrant research and programmatic trust of CCICS in preserving the great Black music developed out of this community.
From our base of service to the community, CCICS has become a leader in the educational community. Out of more than 1,000 graduates from the ICSE Master’s degree program, approximately 151 have gone on to earn their Ph.D. An impressive percentage of CCICS undergraduates have obtained their Bachelor’s degree and continued through the ICSE Master’s program. Indeed, many of our graduates have attained high positions in the institutions that serve the inner city from the public schools and other educational institutions as teachers and administrators, to city administration, law enforcement and correctional administration, municipal and circuit court judges, and a variety of social service agencies, both private and public. Thus, the ideas generated at CCICS are now a part of the thinking of many of those who are in leadership positions throughout America. It is important that we become experts on the trends and developments of the inner city. For those who are interested in pursuing an academic career that deals with the problems and prospects of the inner city from an African Centered perspective, take advantage of this “Academic Goldmine.” Contact the Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies for a full orientation on how to become part of this established academic discipline. The Carruthers Center should endure for the next fifty-years by continuing in its established tradition.
ARE YOU READY TO VOTE? By Julianne Malveaux Are you ready to vote? Are you registered? These may seem like simplistic questions, especially for those who are aware, but every year some folks are denied access to the polls because they didn’t register on time, or they moved and their address does not match the address the registrar of voters has, or SOMETHING. The Presidential election is likely to be a nail-biter, and there are local races that are also close. Your best bet is to make sure you know what the requirements for voting are in your state. www.vote.com lists the requirements for all 50 states. A few states allow voter registration on the day of an election, but most states require you to register between 11 and 30 days before the vote. Some states allow online registration, most allow registration by mail (with requirements about the date a registration is postmarked), and almost all allow in 6
person registration. The terms and conditions of voting are still being negotiated in some states so it makes sense to stay on top of voting rules. A federal appeals court recently kicked discriminatory North Carolina voting terms to the curb, saying that that state discriminated against African Americans with “surgical precision.” Efforts to reduce the number of days available for early voting, or to eliminate Sunday voting, disproportionately affects African American voters. North Carolina Republians are deliberate and mindful in their attempt to sideline African American voters, since most African Americans are Democrats. They want to deliver their state to Donald Trump and they want to ensure that Senator Richard Burr and Governor Pat McCrory, both Republicans, are also re-elected. North Carolina isn’t the only state with electoral shenanigans. Texas, Kansas, Georgia and Alabama have also implemented restrictive mea-

Disputes revolve around things like absentee ballots, purges of inactive voters, and issues of whether ballots will count if they are cast in the wrong precincts. In our “democracy,” it seems that we do more to discourage voters than encourage them, and while the vot-
ing process could be seamless, plans to prevent as many as 50,000 Kansas voters from going to the polls, for example, make no sense in a “participatory democracy.” Some folks don’t want it to be participatory, though. Republicans now control most state legislatures, and have been passing voter suppression laws since 2010, when they began to take control of state houses. Civic participation organizations, like the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, the National Coalition for Black Civic Participation, and others, are fighting back, preparing to have people available to help voters, especially in battleground states, and with hotlines (1-866-OUR-VOTE) and other forms of voter assistance. In an election that is likely to be close, it is important that every voice be heard. I’m still not clear why polling suggests that this vote is so close. Secretary Hillary Clinton, for all her imperfections, is a stunningly superior candidate to the bumbling Donald

Trump who just recently praised Russia’s Vladimir Putin as a “better leader” than President Obama. Now, that’s just downright unpatriotic, not to mention short-sighted, and tone-deaf. While folks are running Colin Kaepernick down for being unpatriotic, Trump gets away with comments that border on the treasonous, and is still considered a “credible” candidate for President. Really? Donald Trump goes to one Black church and gets all kinds of media coverage. Hillary Clinton visits numerous Black churches, and the media is absent. Donald Trump blusters his way through an interview with Matt Lauer on national security, and is hardly challenged and, certainly, never interrupted. Hillary Clinton offers substance to an extremely biased Lauer who was, at best, unprepared for the interview. Instead of getting kudos on her performance, too many have noticed that (Continued on page 15) www.chicagocrusader.com

WorldChicago hosts workshops and product showcase for African Women Entrepreneurs The U.S. Department of State’s African Women’s Entrepreneurship Program (AWEP) partnered with WorldChicago to showcase products handcrafted by women from Sub-Saharan and North Africa on Friday, September 9 at the Chicago Cultural Center. Gourmet foods, skincare, home décor, and fashion merchandise including leather goods, jewelry, handbags, and designer clothes were among the items featured. Chicago retailers and the public had the opportunity to interact one-on-one with the dynamic businesswomen selected by the State Department for their leadership skills, while also learning more about African culture. On Thursday, September 8, the women attended a seminar on marketing, media, public relations and community outreach at the Hotel Sofitel, organized by Laurie Glenn of ThinkInc., and featuring Chicago area entrepreneurs and businesswomen. Participating panelist were Patricia Andrews-Keenan, founder & president, The Tallulah Group; Leslie Fox, executive vice president & general manager, Res Publica Group; Shelley Rosen, founder & CEO, Luxe Blooms; Anne-Marie St. Germaine, partner & managing director, Resolute Consulting; and Ana Vargas, managing director, communications, Teach for America. “These women are amazing leaders who are seeking to make meaningful change in their countries with the enterprises they run,” said AndrewsKeenan who spoke to them about leveraging media, social media and community outreach to grow their businesses. Launched by the State Department in 2010, AWEP introduces African women to new economic tools and creates viable opportunities that can accelerate the growth of their businesses. The program also identifies and builds networks of women en-

Rose Royce and Howard Hewett close out AFA African Festival of the Arts embraces theme of togetherness and peace Thousands of Chicagoans crowded into Washington Park on Labor Day evening for the final night of the African Festival of the Arts (AFA). The festival goers were not disappointed when Howard Hewett and Rose Royce took to the stage and delivered some show stopping performances. The concerts were a culmination of four days of African-influenced food, music, shopping, dance
and entertainment. Nearly 300 vendors and artisans offered their artifacts, textiles, traditional crafts, and museum-quality art for sale to festivalgoers. The near perfect weekend weather drew impressive crowds, particularly for Monday evening. The theme of this year’s festival was Ruwadzano, which means ‘togetherness’ in the Shona language. During this year’s event, AIH recognized the impact togetherness has in relationships, in business, and in service to community. This year’s Grand Baba was WGN’s Robert

It was my first night at the Baths, and before I went on, the owner Steven Ostrow, stuck his head into the dressing room and asked how I wanted to be introduced. I said, ‘Just tell them I’m divine!’ And that’s how it started.” The collection features a remastered version of the original album, including the Top 40 hits: “Do You Want To Dance” and “Friends” as well as the Top 10 smash hit “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.” Co-pro(Continued on page 13) 12

The Gene Siskel Film Center will screen a great 2016 documentary that I admit had me in tears toward the end as I reflected upon my own life. “Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise” will have its exclusive premiere at the Center, located at 164 N. State St., from September 16 through September 29. Distinctly referred to as “a redwood tree, with deep roots in American culture,” icon Maya Angelou gave people the freedom to think about their history in a way they never had before. Dr. Angelou’s was a prolific life, and she inspired generations with lyrical modern African-American thought that pushed boundaries. This unprecedented film celebrates Dr. Angelou by weaving her words with rare and intimate archival photographs and videos, which paint hidden moments of her exuberant life during some of America’s most defining moments. From her upbringing in the Depressionera South to her work with Malcolm X in Ghana to her inaugural speech for President Bill Clinton, the film takes us on an incredible journey through the life of a true American icon. The film also features a remarkable series of interviews with friends and family, including Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Common, Alfre Woodard, Cicely Tyson, Quincy Jones, Secretary Hillary Clinton, John Singleton and Dr. Angelou’s son, Guy Johnson, among others. An artist who became her friend and reportedly was left some of Dr. Angelou’s personal belongings after her death in 2014 was Valerie Simpson. Simpson recalled when her late husband and singing partner Nickolas Ashford first saw Dr. Angelou and thought that, beyond her breath of work and poetry, she was sexy. “We had been living in Black and white, and she brought color,”

The son of the Guardians of the Flames’ Big Chief Donald Harrison, Sr., who was also a knowledgeable jazz fan, he grew up with jazz music and Black Indian rhythms in the air. She also spoke with comedian Dave Chappelle, after he walked away from millions, telling him: “There’s someplace that no one can take you beyond.” The documentary also revealed the friendship/relationship that she shared with the great author James Baldwin. They were like siblings, and the two would discuss at length issues about her career. There is so much in this documentary—from Dr. Angelou’s sometimes tragic childhood to her dancing in a strip club to her indelible impression upon the world— that makes it a “must see.” So many heavy hitters speaking fondly of Dr. Angelou, and so many personal details revealed, that it opens up a wealth of intimate information about the esteemed luminary— much in the way that Dr. Angelou’s writings looked into her soul. “Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise” has won a number of awards, so far. A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe You still have value—regardless of your life’s journey and the challenges you’ve faced. Your life’s purpose and value is bigger than you could ever imagine. This message of worth should ring from every mountaintop, neighborhood and home for youth and adults. From the womb to the tomb—we should forever be reminded that as long as you have a pulse you have purpose. In previous weeks, I reminded you that human life always has value because God created man in His image and likeness (Gen. 1:27). Gary Hines and Sounds of Blackness’s chart topping single entitled,
“Royalty” has lyrics that are right on point ‘Hold your head up high— keep reaching for the sky—you can take and you can make it. You’re beautiful, powerful and wonderful…you are children of the King. We got a message from above, you ain’t no thug—if you never been told—it’s time for you to know that you’re royalty!’ This timely song has become today’s urban anthem for youth, people and Black America. I believe if our youth heard these words in the womb then Black on Black crime and so much violence that stems from a lack of self-confidence would literally be non-existent. God loves you just as you are—

right here and right now. 1 Peter 2: 9 states, ‘But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.’ Even in your mistakes or mis-steps—be grateful that your life has tremendous worth. Examine a $20 dollar bill. How much is its value once its been stepped on, dropped in the mud, washed and gone through
the ringer? What if it falls in the toilet? What if it’s wrinkled, torn and faded after being tossed around? Once you take that $20 dollar bill to the bank—its value is still no less than $20 dollars. So you messed up—got caught up—it’s called life. I know in your heart of heart, you pray and you cry and hope that it will never happen again. Just like death is unavoidable—mess-ups are inevitable. More importantly, you need to know that in your weakest moment—God doesn’t love you any less. If you were totally perfect, chances are you wouldn’t be alive. At one time, I honestly thought that when Christians accepted the Lord into their hearts—maturation and perfection immediately set in. I thought you literally morphed into the next step of perfection. But now I wonder if anyone can ever become perfect in this life at all. ‘For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing’ (Romans 7:19). Furthermore, Proverbs 4:16--18 reminds us ‘For a righteous man falleth seven times, and riseth up again; But the wicked are overthrown by calamity.’ God is just and merciful to forgive as long as we remain faithful and our heart and motive is to do righteously. His strength is perfect, when I am weak. In other words, God loves to use messed up and imperfect people like you and me. Everyone has issues—yours may be alcohol, someone else may be drugs,
family or lack thereof, fear, fornicating, finances, food or gambling. Yours is no better or worse than mine. So you’ve struggled. This life will be full of them. Since you are still alive, God still has purpose for you. Allow God to take your misery and give you a mission to encourage someone else not to go down that same path. ‘For all things work together for the good of them that love the Lord ’ (Romans 8:28). Remember—God specializes in the impossible. What seems useless and hopeless in your sight is just right for God. Our heavenly Father takes nothing and produces life-changing miracles. Get over yourself. Your life is not about you. God made you to be a blessing to others and give him glory. You have a glorious future (Jer. 29:11). The Lord is willing to forgive whatever you have done. But you must forgive yourself as well and move forward. Remember, you are blessed from the womb to the tomb. Don’t give up on life because God has not given up on you. Do you know the value of your life…? Effie Rolfe is an Author of “Supersize Your Thinking,” Media Personality and Motivational Speaker. CFPB wins court victory over payday. . . (Continued from page 5) The federal court disagreed and dismissed challenging arguments, finding CashCall to be the true lender. The relationship with Western Sky was tantamount to a “rent-a-bank” scheme. In part the ruling stated affected states “have expressed a fundamental public policy in protecting its citizens.” CFPB’s late summer court victory is similar to another recent enforcement action by the Maryland Commissioner of Financial Regulation. In that state’s court, CashCall was found to be a lender that tried to evade state usury limits by using the rent-abank scheme. Today there are 90 million people who live in the District of Columbia and 14 states where excessively-priced payday loans are not allowed. Collectively, these states save more than $2 billion a year that would otherwise be spent on payday loan fees. That’s a good thing for consumers. Consumer advocates are celebrating this important victory. It is one that upholds the impor-
tance of strong state laws and effective enforcement. “This important ruling validates the right of states to protect their citizens from predatory loans, whether they are made online or at a storefront,” noted Diane Standaert, director of state policy and an executive vice president with the Center for Responsible Lending. “It reinforces the common sense concept that people should not be harassed for debts they do not owe. Both states and the CFPB must continue to enact protections against unfair lending and collection practices.” The court ruling also comes when the deadline for public comment on payday lending approaches. CFPB will accept comments from citizens and organizations that have concerns about payday and high-cost small-dollar loans. An online portal can accept comments at: http://stoppaydaypredators.org/crl/. The deadline for public comment is October 7. If anyone doubts how these small-dollar loans cause so much financial harm, consider these facts: Over $3.4 billion in excessive fees are drained from payday bor-

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Continued from page 4) music festival will generate 50 full-time jobs? While I have never produced a music festival, I know that the people who do get paid. Scott needs to immediately come clean with how much he and his co-producer, his wife, are making off of this festival. I understand Scott is in his first term, but surely he learned something about politics and government operations from his late father. If not, common sense should tell him to avoid even the appearance of impropriety. Even if we give Scott a huge benefit of the doubt, he is not making any money in the producer role, who won’t bring up the possibility there are kickbacks from the performers? For many people perception is reality. That is
exactly why Scott should have been smarter and stuck to the traditional role of alderman. This festival of his has no lasting favorable impact on our community. It leaves out grade school age residents, as well as senior citizens. Aren’t they part of the ward too? He has been on the job two years and I am hard-pressed to pinpoint anything Scott has done to have a major favorable impact on our ward. He campaigned on being a lifelong resident and understanding the community’s needs. I am much, much older than Scott and lived here longer than he has and this is the first time I have heard one of our needs is more music.

rowers each year Nearly 1 in 4 payday borrowers rely on either public assistance or retirement benefits as an income source. Payday borrowers are more likely to experience bank penalty fees, delinquencies on other bills, and delayed medical care. All too often across the country, payday storefronts ply their trade in Black and Latino neighborhoods. The noticeable presence of payday lenders in our communities indicates our people are being targeted to become financial victims. I would challenge anyone to identify areas dominated by high-income consumers that have a comparable number of payday stores. Starting now, choose not to become a payday victim. If there was ever a time to speak up or speak out on predatory lending, don’t miss the October 7 deadline for comments. Boykin says ‘Black-on-Black crime is genocide’ By Chinta Strausberg Speaking at the first of nine town hall meetings searching for viable solutions to the rise in violence, Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin late Tuesday night labeled the rise in gun violence “pure genocide” and said a solution won’t happen soon “because we didn’t get here over night.” Boykin made his remarks during the first of nine town hall meetings/listening tours held at the New Mt. Pilgrim Church, 4301 W. Washington Blvd., located in the West Garfield Park community. The per capita income here is $10,951, and 40.3 percent of residents are living below the poverty line with an unemployment rate of 25.2 percent. The forum was held in conjunction with the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, Chicago Urban League and Mothers Against Guns. Thanking those who attended his first town hall meeting, Boykin said, “The pain is real…deep especially those affected by gun violence.” One speaker said, “It will take men to break the chain of violence” that has the Black community almost locked in fear. Others spoke of the lack of jobs and the code of silence that allows shooters to maim and kill again. They discussed the suspension of Black male youth and the lack of teachers who know how to handle them, and voter accountability. Some wanted ministers on the police force. Boykin said at the end of the nine community meetings he would produce a report and present it to the community, the governor, the mayor and to the president of the Cook County Board, as well as to the Springfield legislators. “Will we solve it overnight? No. We didn’t get here overnight, but what I see is genocide taking place in our community. This is pure genocide and we have to stop it…. It’s self-hate promulgated by a lot of poverty and a lot of conditions that create it. This is
a combustible mix that we are living in here in West Garfield Park and in many of these endangered communities,” Boykin said. Saying he is fully committed to reducing violence in Chicago, Boykin said, “Nothing is going to stop us. We are going to get to the bottom of this business—this violence in the city of Chicago.” He said Chicago has more homicides than Los Angeles and New York combined, and both cities are larger than Chicago. “That’s unacceptable,” said Boykin. Boykin challenged the mayor and the president of the Cook County Board to put their “hands to the plow” and help stem the violence in Chicago. “If you can secure downtown, why can’t you secure” the West and South Sides of Chicago? he asked. “We got to protect our children and our senior citizens. That is what we’re doing, what we’re doing and shame on the aldermen” who did not attend the first town hall meeting On the panel were: J. Michael Carr, Jr., founder and executive director, Fathers for the Future; Rev. Janette

REV. JANETTE WILSON, National Executive Director of PUSH Excel made several recommendations at the town hall meeting. What happens when a person wants to be a provider and can’t provide? That is what is happening on the streets. I know because I’ve lived it.” Like Boykin, Bentley said there is a direct correlation between poverty and crime, which must be addressed.
