Chaos at job fair for new Mariano’s store Hundreds turned away for interviews for positions in Bronzeville By Keith Chambers The line stretched four city blocks. Nearly 1,000 people—many of them in desperate need of work—stood in line for hours to apply for just 400 job openings for the new Mariano’s store opening in Bronzeville Oct. 11. What seemed like an opportunity to get a job turned into a mob scene with hundreds of disappointed job applicants being turned away or going home after Chicago Police of-

ficials closed the gate at Holy Angels Church, where Mariano’s Open House Career Fair was held on Sept. 15. While some were able to have their resumes reviewed by Mariano’s, many left without being interviewed. One of them was Neal Crudup, 30, who lives in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. Unemployed and broke, Crudup was seeking any job he can get at Mariano’s. “I’ve made many mistakes in my life, but I came here to get my life together,” said Crudup, who heard about the career fair on

the streets. “I’ve made many mistakes, but everyone deserves a chance.” The experience left hundreds disappointed and angry. Many questioned whether Mariano’s underestimated the turnout or were insufficiently prepared to handle the large crowds. Some also questioned whether Mariano’s was really committed to helping the Black community. The job fair was held less than two miles from the new Mariano’s store scheduled to open at 39th & King Drive. For the past sev-

BLACK HISTORY LIGHTS UP A NATION After a visit to the National Museum of African American History and Culture, I was left in awe By Erick Johnson WASHINGTON- It took me six hours to see over 3,000 pieces of Black relics. Ok I cheated. By the end of my tour, I was tired and worn out, so I skimmed over many artifacts. Despite the blisters and many breaks, I still didn’t see everything at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), which will open this weekend with the biggest party the nation has seen in recent memory. The place is incredible. Six times as big as the DuSable Muse-

um and four times as big as the Detroit’s magnificent Charles Wright Museum, the Black museum in our nation’s capitol is truly a thing to behold. Some 18 minutes away, President Barack Obama will leave his famous house on Pennsylvania Avenue on September 24 to dedicate the museum. It will be a ceremony steeped in symbolism when the country’s first Black president rings the 130-year-old Freedom Bell, which for this occasion, was temporarily removed from its perch at the historic First Baptist Church in Williamsburg, VA, located 154 miles away from the U.S. Capitol. For 150,000 Americans who are expected to descend on Washington this weekend, the wait is finally over. The museum will officially open its doors at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 24

after months of hype and anticipation. For Black Americans, it’s a proud and historic moment to showcase the contributions of a people who waited 100 years for this day to arrive. Despite the many sacrifices of Blacks, never in this country’s history has there been a Black museum of this scale and intrigue. The museum vividly tells the story of Black America, from the pain and horror of slavery, to the triumphs and contributions in nearly all professions, from the military to business, media, television, sports, fashion and yes culinary arts. For those who are making the pilgrimage to Washington this weekend, the museum will be worth enduring huge crowds and long lines. It’s big and impressive. There is so much about Black history that many people don’t know (Continued on page 10)

eral months, construction workers and Mariano’s executives have been busy around the clock stocking the store’s shelves and putting the finishing touches on their 38th store in the Chicago area. In recent months, excitement and anticipation had been building about Mariano’s new store in Bronzeville. Many residents have expressed hope that the store will help rejuvenate the community by providing jobs and spurring economic development in the area. Last month, several minority-owned businesses attended the “Meet the Buyer” expo at Mariano’s hoping to get their products on the shelves at the Bronzeville location. Weeks before the job fair, Mariano’s sent out a flyer promoting the event. With less than a month before opening, Mariano’s is seeking to fill some 400 positions in 19 departments for the new Bronzeville store. From produce to the bakery, Mariano’s job openings are appealing to applicants seeking work in their community. With unemployment high in South Side neighborhoods, the news spread like a brush fire. People made extra copies and passed them out to friends and neighbors. Many teenagers spread the word on their Facebook page, and Mariano’s advertised the open positions on its website as did Chicago radio station, WGCI. The extra publicity drew a surprising number of applicants who overwhelmed the five people interviewing applicants at Holy Angels Church. Many of the applicants were teenagers who came professionally dressed with resumes in hand. When a Chicago Crusader reporter arrived at the career fair at 4:30 p.m., hundreds of applicants were waiting in a line that stretched from the church at 39th Street to 40th Street & Langley Ave. Many parts of (Continued on page 2)

Groundbreaking held for University of Chicago Trauma Center By Patrice Nkrumah After years of complaints and protests against them, the University of Chicago Medical Center broke ground for construction of a new adult Level 1 trauma center on the corner of 57th & Maryland on Sept. 15. The new center will cost $37 million and is part of a $269 million expansion of the hospital in general. It will feature 41 treatment stations; four trauma resuscitation bays; seven rapid assessment units; four psychiatric rooms; one bariatric room; dedicated imaging stations; and on-site biocontainment within the 29,017foot facility. Patients also will have more privacy, with separate rooms as

opposed to curtained cubicles. “We’ve redesigned the whole flow within the emergency department to be faster, so we can get to sick patients quicker,” said Tom Spiegel, director of the emergency department. The new expanded emergency department is projected to treat an additional 25,000 patient visits a year by 2021 according to the university. More than 2,000 adult trauma patients are expected in the first full year of trauma center designation. Work is expected to be completed on the building in January 2018, and the facility will be fully operational in July 2018, a university spokesperson said. Much of the credit for getting the university to concede to the demands is given to Black youth from the

As hundreds waited in line, tensions were building as many frustrated applicants waited under hot temperatures. Many applicants were closely watching to see if anyone cut the line. The career fair started at 3 p.m., but many people were waiting since noon. One woman was waiting since 1 p.m. to hold a spot for her teenage daughter who was on her way from school. As it turned out, many at the front of the line did the same thing. “My daughter needs a job, so I came out today because I knew there would be a lot of people,” said the woman, who did not want to give her name. “I thought that by doing this, she had a better chance of getting the interview.” The woman’s chances didn’t work. Not only was she told that she couldn’t wait for someone, the heated crowds most likely would have grown angry at the sight of her daughter getting a spot at the front after arriving late for the ca2

Witnesses who spoke to the Crusader said one of the girls tried to skip in front of other applicants. Soon, the area felt like a mob scene as patience wore thin among the waiting applicants. After the fight, several Chicago Police officers ar-

rived at the scene and closed a gate to the parking lot, cutting off the line of applicants who waited for a long time. The church’s pastor, the Rev. Andrew C. Smith, was left guarding the gate, where thick crowds were

pushing to get in. “It’s too many people,” Smith said. “We have to think about people’s safety now.” “This is terrible,” said Kendall Boatner, a Bronzeville resident. “Everything was so peaceful.” About 25 minutes after police closed the gate, a Crusader reporter surveyed the crowds. The long line was gone; about 90 percent of the applicants who were waiting departed. Tiffany Covington, chairman of the pastoral counsel at Holy Angels Church, said she was helping Mariano’s secure phone numbers of those who would not be interviewed. However, the Crusader was unable to verify this with Mariano’s. A public relations representative for the company said the person who could comment for this story was out of town. This year, Mariano’s has opened at least seven new stores in Chicago and the suburbs. The Bronzeville location will be the first store to operate in one of Chicago’s predominantly Black neighborhoods. www.chicagocrusader.com

Millionaire pays bail for six detainees Businessman Dr. Willie Wilson helps men get back on track By Chinta Strausberg

With the support of Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart, Wilson held a press conference outside of a Cook County Jail division where the six men, two whites and four Blacks, patiently waited to be officially released. Explaining why he has launched this pilot program, Wilson said when he ran for mayor in 2015 and for president in the primaries, he learned a lot and saw how people were suffering. “I thought that you can talk about it but if you don’t do nothing about it, just shut up.”

Wilson said, “This is not a Black thing. It’s a human thing. Some of them (detainees) had jobs. One of the detainees, Vincent Smart, said, “I hope this continues to happen. It’s not good in there. I would not wish this on my worse enemy,” he said referring to the jail. DR. MAKING THE BEST OF A MICRO-CHIPPED WORLD For some time now, people have been talking about the poor education systems in the United States that have resulted in a “dumbing-down” of the population. Clearly, some of what is being said is true. The other thing that people talk about is a “micro-chipping” of the population. Most mainstream-minded people “poo-poo” this idea because they consider it to be ridiculous. But think again – it is absolutely intriguing to see the extent to which Americans (and others around the world) are tethered to cell phones and computer games. It is not unusual to see two, three, or even four people sitting together in groups all glued to their cellular phones and not interacting with each other. This issue is no respecter of race, and Black people are just as prone as anyone else to be addicted to digital devices. Now, does being enamored of modern technology like cell phones and computer games equate to a dumbing down of the populace? Surely, people who demonstrate a facility with the digital world will have an advantage when it comes to academic and workplace pursuits. But, as people complain, are we losing touch with each other? Sometimes yes, but the fact of the matter is that we HAVE all been microchipped, which actually brings us closer together. As evidenced in the saga of the Hillary Clinton Blackberry scandal, we carry our worlds around with us, and we are INSTANTLY available to whoever has the expertise and will to delve deeply into our lives. Cell phones keep a blow by blow report of our movement. This is why GPS is both a blessing and a curse. There is an extreme irony connected with the digital revolution and the dumbing down of America. The more sophisticated digital devices become, the less informed some people are. This is because of the personal tastes that people have which causes them to be stuck into whatever their personal paradigm happens to be. In other words, if you are a teen whose only real interests are computer games and gangsta’ rap, your digital experience will totally differ from someone whose interests are physics and computer science. Considering the foregoing, as we move about the digital world, it would behoove us to be careful as to what we leave as our digital footprints. Identity theft and government snooping become more possible if we are careless. In spite of this, we should take advantage of the excellent opportunities that abound during this, the digital age. The world is literally at our fingertips; we can learn what we want to learn, visit remote and exotic places; practice whatever languages we desire to learn; write and perform music; create fantastic works of digital art; make movies; and create online businesses that minimize overhead costs that are associated with brick and mortar institutions. Basically, the computer, and its digital surrogate, the cell phone, can expand our horizons exponentially. It makes possible fantastic opportunities that can level the playing field; African Americans take heed. This brave new digital world, if approached properly, can open up whole new vistas for the Black community. The digital world instantly allows a person to use his or her creative resources. You can transact business locally or globally online with a reduced fiscal output. The bottom line is that we are finally at a point in history wherein our creativity, enthusiasm and energy can take us to great heights. Besides the business aspect, Black students can have boundless opportunities for learning; any subject is instantly within reach. The only problem that can keep progress from happening is that we limit our vision and refuse to broaden our horizons. These are scary times, but also great times. If we are prudent, we can make the best of them, and though our privacy may be compromised, we can keep this in mind while we benefit from the correct online behavior. A luta continua.

Wasn’t it mighty white of Mayor Rahm Emanuel to tell us last week that the cause of Chicago’s violence epidemic is because Black fathers are missing in the homes? Coming from a man whose own son is repeatedly rumored to be a “weedhead,” the mayor doesn’t have the creds to be lecturing anyone about being a father. I guess the mayor just ran out of stuff to say about the violence and figured Black men are a fair and easy target. He is so wrong on this one. I know, I know, for years the Black man has been the scapegoat in so many of society’s ills, especially in our community. There is no question that due to government regulations, irresponsibility and immaturity a lot of Black men have made bad decisions regarding family life. But guess what? Many more have made the right decisions and are working tirelessly every day to maintain and nurture a solid family environment. Rahm Emanuel needs to take his theory about the epidemic of violence and Black men and shove it. Surely, the mayor isn’t ignorant of the fact that violence has been an ongoing problem in our community for decades. However,

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Mayor’s message is meaningless Dear Editor:

long before it became the issue it is today, some Black men were leaving their families. The shootings and killings then weren’t at the levels we are witnessing today. I guess the mayor’s advisors, including the Negroes on staff, told him to blame the Black man and people will understand. Apparently that was a move intended to take the focus off the failing police department. Emanuel himself blew that strategy because a few days after blaming Black dads he said he was going to spend millions hiring more police. Please tell me what sense that makes. If the Black fathers are the problem why isn’t the mayor directing money and other resources to improve the lot of Black men, and help them reconnect with their families. Why is he allocating dollars the city doesn’t have to police he said aren’t really the problem. Then, a couple of days later, his highness said no matter how many police he brings on board, it won’t make a difference if the cops continue their passive patrolling and just driving through the community and not policing, anything. How’s that for double-talk? As the weeks go by, it becomes more and more apparent that Emanuel doesn’t have a clue as to how to deal with the issue of violence. He made the situation even worse by hiring the least competent superintendent in the country-actually a man who didn’t even

apply for the superintendent’s job. Now, he plans to have a citizens’ police review board, but hasn’t said how it will be funded. The Chicago City Council and everyday people can no longer ignore the fact the mayor hasn’t even given good lip service. We must demand that the civilian board be given an adequate budget immediately. If no budget is (Continued on page 14)

Sixteen Steps to Minority Business Development Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford Through members of the Trump Campaign I was asked to present a plan for Minority Business Development. That motivated me since there wasn’t such a request made since the George W. Bush campaign. The following is my frank response: I. Repeal Project Labor Agreements: Executive Order 13502 which requires union shops (Project Labor Agreements – PLA) only for federal construction projects over $1 million should be repealed immediately. Only 2% of Black-owned construction companies are union. This executive order is discriminatory in nature and raises unemployment rates by blocking out the vast majority of Black, Hispanic and female construction workers from equal employment opportunity. It is so ironic that the nation’s first Black president made this his first executive order – discriminating against Blacks and other minorities with a smile on his face. 2. OFCCP Audits (Dept. of Labor): Perform EEO-1 (Title 7 of the Civil Rights Act of 1964) audits on local construction union trade halls. Some trades will resemble Jim Crow Era activity. Corrective action should be immediate. Any lack of correction should result in decertification. 3. Delete the Clean Power Plan: President Obama stated that he was going to “kill coal.” He has almost done it. With Hillary Clinton cheering him on, the coal industry has taken a severe blow with 65% of coal companies in bankruptcy. The next administration should put the industry on “resuscitation.” Let’s continue to use clean coal as it is the cheapest form of energy and a very large employer of Black workers. Those thousands of jobs that have been lost throughout America should start

Harry C. Alford making their way back during the first half of next year. The Clean Power Plan which was the lethal vehicle in this process has been put on hold by the US Supreme Court. It should be permanently removed by the next Administration. This is terribly important to underserved communities. All forms of energy, including fossil fuels, should be exploited for our economic backbone guarantee. 4. Educational Attainment: Good education is the prosperous road to economic empowerment. So why has this administration eliminated educational opportunity for hundreds of thousand students by attacking for profit schools, blocking charter schools and pushing Common Core? The Department of Education should be eliminated and individual states should hold this great responsibility. 5. Environment Protection Agency: The Environmental Protection Agency has applied billions of dollars against the economic status of

www.chicagocrusader.coM

the Middle Class. There should be a thorough audit of the true costs of all rules and regulations that have been forced upon our industries and consumers. After that we should begin the cleansing process of all detrimental actions. 6. Health Care: The Affordable Care Act, AKA Obamacare, is a terrible failure. Within the next two years the majority of insurance carriers will exit this program. We should begin finding a replacement as soon as possible. We are heading towards a crisis in medical care. It was not an improvement. 7. Rule of Law: A good nation must abide by the Rule of Law. We need a Department of Justice that understands this and will be committed to it. The Email Scandal, the IRS Scandal, The Pay for Play Scandal at the State Department, the Sanctuary City Scandals, the Veterans’ Administration Scandal and this is to name just a few scandals. History will show this Administration to be the most corrupt in the history of the United States. All of this is going on and collectively puts our nation at risk. We must demand an honest and courageous Attorney General – one who would rather resign than to do something anti-constitutional or sell out our nation. The first thing we can do is review all of the denials to investigate by the last two Attorney Generals. Those matters that demand investigation should be investigated. Corruption is the “first cousin” to discrimination. They limit high performance in management and fiscal excellence. 8. Fiscal Matters: Let’s look at our fiscal matters. The Estate Tax is onerous and it should be totally eliminated. A family’s net worth should not be taxed whenever the matriarch or patriarch passes on. This is cruel and heartless. Our national debt is at dangerous levels. The ever rising amount is now exceeding 20 Trillion Dollars. Any quick adverse movement could crush us as a viable nation. If we would just cut out all of the graft, waste and full blown incompetence in annual government spending that would be a turn for the better. The latest State Department scandal involves $6 billion in missing procurement money. One example is a procurement agent awarding a $62 million no-bid contract to his WIFE! The files concerning this procurement are empty. This is just one example. $6 billion may be an underestimate as the investigation is just now beginning. Even the current Secretary of State has just granted his daughter a $6 million no-bid grant for her project. 9. Immigration: Sanctuary Cities are illegal, dangerous, incentives for low wages and should not be tolerated. Cities, counties and other low

Blacks Must control their owcoMMunity

level governmental agencies should be severely punished for tolerating such activity. Throughout our nation illegal workers cut into the economic opportunities of our legal citizens. In addition to the illegal migrant workers presence comes organized sex slavery to complement the illegal workers. Such immoral enterprise must be eliminated. 10. Restructure the SBA: Budget by budget the Small Business Administration has been reduced to the point of ineffectiveness. Staffing must be increased to address the needs of America’s small business. There is not a more demoralized group of federal workers in the entire government. 11. Arbitration Process in 8a Small Business Contracting: The 8a Program is one of the most successful programs in small business procurement. The Small Business Agent is to provide technical support and advice to the assigned 8a business. However, when a general contractor refuses to approve performance of an 8a firm there is no means of arbitration. The Small Business Agent cannot intervene in legal arbitration leaving the 8a firm on its own. The only recourse is for the 8a firm to file suit against the SBA. Some of these disputes can be expensive and last years to the detriment of the low funded 8a firm. There are horror stories! 12. Alaska Native Corporations: Presently the Alaska Native Corporations program is incorporated into the 8a Program. ANC’s are given various exceptions and advantages versus the 8a rules. Exceptions in size standards, race, graduation dates, subcontracting limits, etc. make them superior to valid 8a firms. Thus, ANC’s are predatory versus bona fide 8a firms. The volume of traditional 8a awards immediately started shrinking by the billions of dollars and transferred to ANC volume since the start of this peculiar program. Contrary to the name of the program many of these ANC companies are owned by Caucasian, blond and blue eyed individuals who attain billions of dollars in sales and reside outside of Alaska. This first became noticed by the National Black Chamber of Commerce when reviewing a significant drop in minority 8a business contracts awarded during the mid – 1990’s and then the contracting activity during the Katrina rebuilding process in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Solution: The ANC Program should be separate and noncompetitive with the 8a program (it is different). 13. Section 3 of the HUD Act (CFR 24 Part 135): This is one of the greatest written job training programs in the Federal Government.

It was written during the tenure of Secretary Jack Kemp in response to the Watts Riot of 1965. It was then strengthened after the Rodney King Riot of 1992. However, for the most part, this job training program is ignored to the detriment of millions of poverty stricken persons. Billions of dollars are spent on HUD funded projects that require significant but low level labor. Residents living in HUD properties or low income communities can be trained with on the job work and become permanently employed. Many of these residents and low income persons can become entrepreneurs and further multiply employment. However, there hasn’t been an administration dedicated to this process. Thus, poverty goes on and that is a total disgrace. America needs a president who will enforce Section 3 of the HUD Act. 14. Capital Access: The Dodd – Frank Act has seriously limited the amount of capital available to small business especially minority business. The government should now place incentives that will encourage the banking industry to become more creative in improving the access levels for small business. HUD can approve funding through its Community Development Block Grant program to enable towns, cities and counties to provide lending to local small businesses. JP Morgan Chase has introduced a small business program that could be emulated and enlarged. 15. Marketing and Publicizing Great Programs and Opportunities: Federal Agencies can improve implementing positive programs by utilizing the Black press network of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA). This will get the news and opportunities of the above programs to the grassroots of the Black population of America. Tailored advertising will make minority businesses more aware of the opportunities that exist. This could drive more minority businesses to programs and offices of the Small Business Administration. 16. Small Business Goals in Federal Contracting: Each fiscal year goals are set for Small Business Contracting. However, there is never any follow-up announced. Are the goals aggressive and realistic or are they “pie in the sky? Goals should be set by the following criteria: Specific, Measurable, Achievable and Compatible = SMAC. The success or failure of the goals should be published and thoroughly explained. Mr. Alford is the Co-Founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce ®. WE MUST NOT ABANDON BLACK FAMILY LIFE Dr. Conrad Worrill, Director/Professor, Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS), located at 700 East Oakwood Blvd, Chicago, Illinois, 60653, 773268-7500, Fax: 773-268-3835. E-mail: c-worrill@neiu.edu, Website: www.neiu.edu/ccics, Twitter: @CCICS_Chicago.

Dr. Conrad Worrill

Since the early 1900s, Black and white scholars have written much on the Black family. When one examines the card catalogue of any library in America they will find volumes of books, articles and newspaper clippings discussing some aspect of Black family life. What we need in the African American community is a framework to examine and solve the problems of Black family life on our own terms. The capturing of African people, who were placed in chattel slavery in North America, has left some devastating scars on the most basic unit or any group — the family. There is no question that the family has been that unit that provides the basic foundation for any group of people to survive and develop. Families constitute grandmothers, grandfathers, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts and in-laws. Sometimes families extend beyond blood relatives to those persons we bring into our families for whatever reason.

Families function in the context of their racial and ethnic identity. This identity is shaped by the historical and external forces of a given society. Although the problems of the Black family appear to be very complex on the one hand, on the other, the problem is very simple. First of all, African people who were captured and introduced into the western hemisphere as property and commodities were removed from their land and institutional arrangements of African life. Second, this process of white takeover of Black life, through the most brutal form of oppression — the slave trade and the eventual enslavement of African people on the plantations of North America, has been a back breaking experience for our people. Even through our survival techniques have been superior, in the face of brutal psychological and physical violence against us, we are now at the crossroads. We face the challenge of preserv-

ing some of the traditions of the Black family, developed by our ancestors, who fought so hard against racism and white supremacy in this country. This must be done, in part, through the continuing African Centered Education Movement. As our renowned ancestor and deep thinker Dr. Jacob H. Carruthers explained, African Centered Education should focus on the following: 1. Advocates that restoring the historical truth about Africa is the priority for African thinkers (including Africans in the Diaspora). 2. Holds that there is a distinct universal African World View which should be the foundation for all African intellectual development. 3. Involves the massive education or rather re-education of the African people of the world from an African perspective in the interest of African people and directed by African thinkers. It is a necessary pre-condi-

tion for the freedom of the African mind and subsequently African liberation. We must not abandon family life. It is the basis for our survival and development. It is the strategy of the white supremacy system to place so much pressure on us that we give up our fight for independence and freedom. When the family unit begins to wither away, we must rise to the occasion and fight to keep its basic elements alive in our communities. It is the duty of all Black people to understand that we are faced with a genocidal set of circumstances in America. Look around our communities and what do we /you see? We witness the absence of that fighting family spirit among us that has been so much a part of Black family life. The family is the support mechanism for all that we do and it is a sacred institution that we must preserve and protect on our own terms.

STOP THE PAYDAY LOAN DEBT TRAP By Julianne Malveaux Between the unemployment rate report that was released in early September, and the Census report on income and poverty that was released on September 13, President Obama and his team got great news about the economic status of the average worker. Incomes are up a whopping 5.2 percent between 2014 and 2015; the first time incomes have increased since 2007. The poverty rate dropped 1.2 percentage points, to 13.5 percent, which translates into 3.5 million fewer people living in poverty. While the poverty rate is still higher than it was in 2007, this sharp decrease in the poverty rate is significant. Between the unemployment rate report, which shows an unemployment rate at 4.9 percent, and the income and poverty report, which shows a 2.4 million increase in the number of workers, the Obama economic team can rightly assert that economic recovery has trickled down. Still, poverty rates are way too high – almost one in four (24.1 percent) African American households live in poverty. The number of African American children in poverty, though falling, remains too high (31.6 percent). And the number of people in “extreme 6

poverty” (with incomes at less than half the poverty line) is alarming – more than ten percent of African Americans (and 6 percent of the total population) live in extreme poverty. The persistence of poverty, even in the face of good news, provides opportunities for those whose riches come from the exploitation of poor people. Those who provide payday loans are among the worst, because they set up a debt trap that it is almost impossible for poor people to escape from. Indeed, these predators treat the poor as profit centers and enrich themselves from other people’s misery. Even as we celebrate the economic progress of the past year, we must ensure that usurious payday lenders are curtailed by regulators who can restrict their ability to extract interest rates in excess of 300 percent from the very poor. This is how it works – payday lenders provide “emergency” loans for those people who have more month than money, and who simply can’t make ends meet. They provide small loans for a fee of something like $15 per $100 for 7 to 14 days. The loan may be secured by a paycheck, a pre-dated check, or an automobile title. If the loan is not paid back on time, a borrower may negotiate an “extension,” which requires more fees. Repeated payday loans result in

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2016

Dr. Julianne Malveaux $3.5 billion in fees each year. The Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection (CFPB) is considering regulations to protect consumers from exploitation and usury from short-term loans and auto title loans. A coalition of faith leaders, is hoping that those who have been affected by the exploitive practices of payday loans, band together. They’ve asked people who have been affected by payday loans to comment on their website, FaithforFairLending.org, hoping that the CFPB will be influenced by the experiences that many have had with payday lending.

Rev. Sekinah Hamlin, who leads faith initiatives for the Center for Responsible Lending, says that faith leaders have mobilized because they expect that the payday lending industry will fight any regulations to curtail their activity. The CFPB will be accepting comments about payday lending until October 7, and the Center for Responsible Lending (ResponsibleLending.org) hopes that people will share letters and comments encouraging CFPB to curtail payday. While it is important to curtail payday lending so that low-income borrowers can avoid the debt trap, the longer term solution to the debt trap is better pay for people who could access traditional credit options, or avoid debt altogether, if they earned reasonable pay. The working families agenda that some in Congress have embraced (which includes an increase in the minimum wage, among other provisions to assist those on the bottom) is a step in the right direction. The fight for $15, which would provide families at the bottom with incomes of about $31,000 a year, would also alleviate poverty and make it easier for people to make ends meet. It is important that those of us who care about economic justice make our voices heard before October 7. To stop the payday loan

debt trap and encourage the CFBP to issue regulations that will protect those who are so easily exploited, comment online at FaithforFairLending.org, or send your comment to The Center for Responsible Lending, Faith and Credit Roundtable, 302 W. Main Street, Durham, NC 27701. Tackling the payday lending issue, however is only a small step toward economic justice. Those who want economic justice must also be committed to electing those who will implement a working families agenda. The economic good news that was released early this month does not mean that we are out of the woods around poverty issues. Julianne Malveaux is an author and economist. THE HATERS ARE COMING OUT OF THE WOODWORK

THANKS TO MY LOYAL READERS The Bozz called me last week and told me I had better get back to the newspaper quick, fast and in a hurry ‘cause some of my readers were threatening to kick somebody’s butt if I did not write this week. So here I am. Let me tell you I got sicker than three dogs listening to Donald Trump and couldn’t hold any food down. The doctor said that I had Trumpitis and the only cure is to tell it like it is about this “lower than a low heel shoe” candidate for President. So here we go:

We can talk about “Wheat Head” Trump, but he has awakened the worst in this country. The bigots, racists and low lifes are a large part of his supporters. Dey been waiting 8 years to have a chance to ride on the tail of the head of the bigots, racists and low lifes, Donald Trump. If you haven’t recognized his followers you have blinders on with your eyes closed. What is so sad is the fact that many folks we thought were above this bigotry are part of the media, many are ministers, many are just down and out swindlers and con artists. Let’s just take a look at some of Donald’s characteristics:

artist would take the hard-earned money and government grants to claim that they will be educated and advance in their life and career if they studied at TRUMP UNIVERSITY??? If we (Black people) had done that alone we would be behind bars where Trump belongs. DEADBEAT BUYER: He agrees to pay the price of things and get them delivered and then refuses to pay the agreed upon price. Who does that? A Deadbeat Buyer that’s who!!!

TAX SWINDLER: Show me a tax liar and I say Donald Trump is the biggest tax liar in the country. If not why won’t he let us see his tax returns? I am beginning to believe that the IRS is in cahoots with this fool, by now I CON ARTIST EXTRAORDI- could have audited his tax returns. NAIRE: Who, but a low-life con He probably is paying no taxes!! So not only is he a tax hider, he is a tax swindler! VENOM SPEWS FROM HIS LIPS: He has insulted every race, religion and sane person in this country. He called the handicapped, Mexicans, immigrants and let’s not forget Black folks every despicable name in the book. And he is still able to navigate through crowds and never apologize. I think he is right not to apologize, because you apologize to someone when you are sorry for your words, thoughts and deeds. Now we

Donald Trump

know he ain’t sorry. The chief lie is his Birther” claim that he carried on for more than five (5) years. He said that President Barack Obama wasn’t born in the United States and when his supporters insisted he said that he was. Now you would think that was the end of the story. THINK AGAIN!!! He tried to blame Hillary Clinton for starting the rumor in the first place. Now every news organization almost in the world says this is not true, but his media supporters continue to let him get away with it!! ARE YOU STUPID OR WHAT!!! Now Ima been hearing some of our folks say that they ain’t gonna VOTE!!! A NO VOTE is A VOTE FOR THIS IDIOT!!! I JUST DON’T BELIEVE WE ARE THAT STUPID!!! VOTE, VOTE AND VOTE ON NOVEMBER 8TH FOR HILLARY CLINTON! -ImaGEORGE HALAS IS TURNING OVER IN HIS GRAVE!!! Now Ima ain’t got no love for George Halas. Ima believes that he was a racist just like Trump and that the only Black person that was any good was a good football player.

Well, let me tell you that there are some non-football experts at the helm of the Chicago Bears and Ol’ George must be turning over in his grave. The smarties traded away all of their best players, been doing that for the last three years or more, the latest being Matt Forte and didn’t re-sign the best kicker dey every had in Robbie Gould, let’s not forget Brandon Marshall and the list goes on and on. But the worst part is that even Ima knows that dey done invested in the worst quarterback in the league. Paying him all of that money and not investing in a line to protect his lame behind. Now how smart is that??? I guess Ima gonna have to give up football and go to hockey. At least you see guys trying to win. They need to change their name from the Bears to the Pantsies!!! -ImaIS IT REALLY FICTION??? I decided to share my space with one of our writers this week. He did an interview with a new author and it is said to be fiction, but it sounds like somebody we all know and love right here in Chicago. The title of the article is: “Black Pastors will be saying their prayers after ‘Say Your Preyers” is released. You can read the first four chapters on the website www.sayyour preyers.com!!!

Black Pastors may call on the Lord after “Say your Preyers” is Released By J. Coyden Palmer In what is possibly the most anticipated novel by a first time Black author in history, people can’t stop talking about “Say your Preyers,” a fictional story about a woman who becomes involved with a married pastor at a prestigious Black church. A four-chapter preview of the book has already been downloaded over 13,000 times since it became available three weeks ago and it has been the talk on social media sites around the country. “Say your Preyers” will be the first of a trilogy, with the second book being released sometime in 2017. The book’s main focus is on abuse of power within the Black church and how it hurts the community as a whole. But before it gets to that message, “Say Your Preyers” goes through all of the scandals within a fictional Black church in Chicago. Everything from forbidden sex, bisexual men posing as straight, financial corruption, manipulation of members and other scandals that are rarely talked about, though most know happen, is told in explicit detail. The Crusader recently sat down with first-time author Mundi Aali for an exclusive interview to preview the book and ask why she chose this subject matter to write about. “I wanted to bring awareness to

some of the things I’ve been exposed to… and wanted to write about some situations that people don’t know about,” Aali said. “The sex is juicy but I don’t want it to get lost that the overarching concern is still abuse of power. That’s the message, but of course the sex sells.” The positive responses Aali has received were not expected she said. She said she’s just a simple girl from the South Side of Chicago who realized she had a great idea for a novel. She decided to self-publish because she said when she floated the idea to book publishers; they gave her a lot of interest, but not the financial value she believes the story holds. “It’s been crazy in a good way,” she said, after being recognized by a woman while she was just eating at a Wrigleyville bar earlier this week. “I just floated the teaser to gauge what the response would be and its been overwhelming. It’s a hot topic. People want to know what happens in the Black community, especially the Black church. So hopefully this fictional account can shed some light on that. I write in a humorous way because when you are dealing with sensitive issues you don’t want to make light of it, but you want to educate people in a way they can absorb it.” Much of the content in the book is uncomfortable to read. But it is stuff that has been on the national news

www.chicagocrusader.coM

before with situations like Bishop Eddie Long in Georgia and his questionable involvement with young males and Bishop Hilliard in Texas wanting congregants to buy him a helicopter. Aali wants readers to understand the content from the main character Monday’s lens on life. She said the book is not about attacking the Black church at all but at the same time the content is based on things people gossip about all the time. “It’s about all of the scandals and misappropriations that take place right under people’s noses in the church and how people turn a blind eye,” Aali said. “It’s an ugly story but very necessary and relatable. People want to know what goes on in the back office and under the pulpit so to speak. Why are there three Black churches on the same block and none of them work together? I hope the book inspires people to have these discussions within their church. ‘Say your Preyers’ is about talking about people who have hurt you to take your power back and speaking your truth.” Presales for the book began Sept. 21. The book will officially go on sale at midnight on Sept. 29. The book will be available in both electronic and soft copy. The electronic editions will cost $9.99. Presale price of hardcopies are $14.99 and $18.99. You can purchase the book

1st Annual ‘A-list Speaker Series’ hosted in Chicago Timely Event Brings Lively Discussion, Networking Opportunities To City’s Young Adults of Color, Changing the Narrative A positive, inspiring and optimistic headline regarding the city’s young people of color was written this past weekend, as a rare panel discussion featuring elite Hollywood industry insiders with local roots was successfully convened here. The first annual A-List Speaker Series (ALSS) was hosted on Saturday, September 10 at the Thorne Auditorium of Northwestern University’s Pritzker School of Law, attracting and engaging an audience of hundreds of young people of color from across the city. The event, which was free and open to the public, was themed “Matching Aspiring Young Adults with Hollywood’s Elite,” and was conceived with the goal of empowering participants with strategies enabling them to take better control of their past, present and future success within the lucrative business. “The A-List Speaker Series grew out of my desire to show Chicago’s young people of color real models of success,” said Imani Khayyuh, the program’s creator and producer. “We want our youth who are interested in achieving success in the arena of film

and television to not only see black and brown people who are movers and shakers, but also to connect them to real opportunities and plug them in with these influencers.” The days’ program began with entertainment performed by spoken word artist Keya “Gifted Keys” Trammell, followed by opening remarks from Ms. Khayyuh, before being ably moderated by spirited WMAQ-TV entertainment reporter LeeAnn Trotter. The panel discussion included such Chicago native luminaries as Emmy Award-winning producer and 20year veteran TV studio executive Michael Swanson, keynote speaker; joined on-stage by writer-director Carl Seaton, also of Chicago; writer, producer, director and Chicagoan Natasha Parker; Pepe Vargas, founder and executive director of the International Latino Cultural Center’s “Chicago Latino Film Festival,” noted director-filmmaker Clarence “Coodie” Simmons and costume designer Michael Alan Stein, hailing from New York City, serving as guest panelists. (Continued from page 1) about. The word in Washington is that this facility is the best of the Smithsonian’s 19 museums. I joined nearly 600 journalists from across the country on a sneak preview during the museum’s media day September 14. I arrived by bus with members of the National Newspapers Publishers Association (NNPA), an organization that represents some 200 Black newspapers around the country. The mood was joyous and celebratory. Just a few blocks away at the Supreme Court, history was in the making as Carla Hayden prepared to be sworn in as the first Black librarian to head the massive Library of Congress. After a 45-minute orientation at the Oprah Winfrey Theatre, the tours began. Taking the advice of curators, I started my tour from the bottom or below ground, where the slavery and political movements were located. As I walked down a flight of stairs, I saw a large mural that features Emmett Till and his mother. Coupled with dimmed lighting, it set a somber mood and tone as I descended into what is considered the centerpiece of the entire museum. Here, I experienced a range of emotions from sadness to anger as viewed objects and photos showed how their white slave masters treated my ancestors. An avid history buff, I occasionally delighted upon seeing amazing relics of Mary McCloud Bethune, Nat Turner and other Black pioneers who helped pave the way to freedom. On Concourse 2, where the “Era of Segregation” exhibit was located, my heart began thumping as a bright red Klu Klux Klansman robe caught my eye. I let out a sigh and stared as a white photographer snapped a picture of me glued to something that represented evil in the most hideous way. My spirits were lifted when I saw photos of the Civil Rights Movement and some of the unsung heroes of that era. One of them was of Bayard Rustin, who organized the March on Washington in 1963. One of my favorite activists in the exhibit, Medger Evers, had a generous exhibit about his life and his assassination on June 12, 1963. Throughout these exhibits are numerous multimedia presentations on life for Blacks during slavery. There are also mini theaters where documentaries are shown. I didn’t spend too much time here. Although I had a whole day at the museum, I was concerned about not having enough time to see it all. Everyone was talking about the higher floors that celebrate the achievements of Blacks, but visiting the darkest period first helped me appreciate what was to come. The tour truly became a symbolic journey that gave me a powerful dose of reality, but left me enlightened and inspired. Emotionally drained from the slavery and segregation exhibit, I took a break at the 400-seat Sweet Home Café. The Soul Food menu was off the chain! After consuming loads of catfish, shrimp and

His presence reminded me to look for people, historic events and objects from Chicago that may be featured in the museum. They are many. In the “1968 and Beyond” exhibit on Concourse 1, there is a vintage movie poster of “Cooley High,” which was about a group of fasttalking, jiving teenage high school students on Chicago’s near North Side. There are two exhibits of “Good Times,” the 1970s sitcom about a struggling Black family who lived in the housing project (Cabrini Green) in Chicago. One exhibit includes the funky fashions that the Evans family wore on the show. The late Soul Train founder and former WVON disc jockey Don Cornelius has an exhibit in the stunning music section on the 4th floor. Just a few feet away is the piano that the “Father of Gospel Music,” Thomas Dorsey used as music director at Pilgrim Baptist Church in Bronzeville. There are also artifacts from former South Side residents Sam Cooke, authors Lorraine Hansberry and Gwendolyn Brooks. In sports, there’s a stature of fourtime Olympic gold medalist Jesse Owens and former Bulls Michael Jordan. In media, there are exhibits of the Chicago Defender and Johnson Publishing Company’s Ebony magazine. With numerous three-dimensional objects, photographs and unique artifacts, the Black experience, with its against-the-odds achievements comes full circle on three floors, where one feels an overwhelming since of pride and excitement. It’s hard to believe that this is just a small sample of the nearly 37,000 Black artifacts in the museum’s collection. Some important trailblazers are not in the inaugural collection. They include two famous Chicago residents, Mahalia Jackson and Albertina Walker. And while there is a fedora from the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, I never found any exhibit on another member of music’s royal family, Prince. There aren’t many interesting artifacts on Martin Luther King. His family is holding back in donating King’s items to the Smithsonian. The NMAAHC is new, so I’m sure there will be some corrections and additions as time goes by. I was determined to view the entire museum, but in the end, I was constantly skipping small exhibits and glancing over the big ones. After a full day in the facility, I was exhausted and struggling to continue a tour that at times seemed endless, but too addictive to stop. For the end of my tour, I wanted to see the original casket of Emmett Till. It’s the one that was found in a shed during the Burr Oak Cemetery scandal. The casket is now in a special section near the Remembrance Hall, an area with a large flowing fountain. Two curators at the museum told me workers were rushing to get it done before the end of media day. As it turned out, the exhibit still wasn’t ready by the museum’s 5 p.m. closing time. Looks like another trip is needed, but it will be a while. I need some rest.

Fox TV’s Pitch, Empire and Lethal Weapon offer something for everyone Pitch

By Raymond Ward AWESOME!: The national’s newest jewel, the majestic National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), will be dedicated and open to the world this weekend. Much will be written about the Smithsonian’s newest $540 million dollar structure and the incredible exhibits and artifacts it houses. Having had the opportunity to view and explore the museum last week, I can tell you that it is definitely worth the trip to Washington, D.C. Seeing a Tuskegee Airmen Airplane, or a Segregation-era Southern Railway car; the recreation of Philadelphia’s iconic Mae’s Millinery Shop, or Chuck Berry’s Cadillac, the eight story Museum will bring some to tears, some to a greater sense of pride and some just a good feeling about being Black. However, there’s also a space in the Museum which in it’s own way tells the story of the African American experience...and it’s the Sweet Home Cafe, the NMAAHC’s in-house restaurant...and let me tell you that any restaurant that has “cornbread and pot likker” on its menu immediately deserves a visit. Sweet Home Cafe, housed in the NMAAHC is the newest dining experience at a Smithsonian museum. Managed as a joint venture by Thompson

Sweet Home Cafe Hospitality and Restaurant Associates with celebrity chef, Carla Hall, co-host of ABC-TV’s “The Chew,” Sweet Home Cafe showcases the rich culture and history of the African American people with traditional, authentic offerings as well as present-day food traditions. Behind Executive Chef Jerome Grant, Sweet Home Cafe uses the very best version of classic dishes and employs a high degree of from-scratch cooking with locally-sourced ingredients. The Cafe (which is actually more the size of a Shopping Mall Food Court than a Cafe) tells the story of the regional offerings in four distinct stations and guest can watch as the food is prepared, providing a full sensory experience and culinary engagement for each visitor. The Creole Coast - The cuisine of the Creole Coast has become world renowned for its unique blend of flavors and ingredients along with its laborious cooking techniques. It reflects a wide variety of cultures, including West African, Native American, French, Portuguese, Spanish and Acadian. Sample menu items offered: Gulf Shrimp & Anson Mills Stone Ground Grits - featuring the premier corn-product from popular ColumCarla Hall bia, S. The Agricultural South - The South has always been our country’s breadbasket. The long growing season has established it as an agricultural powerhouse. Products such as corn, grits, Virginia ham, pecans and peaches have become staples of the American diet. Sample menus items offered: “Our Version” Buttermilk Fried Chicken - with black pepper cornmeal waffles, sorghum syrup and farmhouse butter. For the first time in history, a woman takes the mound on the series premiere of “Pitch” Thursday, September 22 on Fox. A beautiful, tough and gifted athlete, Ginny Baker (Kylie Bunbury) is vaulted into instant fame when she’s called up by the San Diego Padres to make her Major League debut. All eyes are on her as she is the top news story of the day, making history as the first woman to pitch…and play in the Major Leagues in the “Pilot” Series premiere episode of Pitch airing Thursday, September 22 (9:0010:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. I liked this episode, because I love Michael Beach who plays Ginny’s father. He is fastidious in his handling and training of his daughter to play baseball from a young age. His son didn’t show much of an interest in the game, so he pulled Ginny out into the yard—and that was all she wrote. Ginny is cool as she starts with her new team, as the whole world watches, and her uniform dons the number of a baseball great who has gone on before her. She tries to set ground rules at the onset, as the team is briefed on getting along with her and welcoming her to the fold. I am not a great baseball fan, but I liked seeing this subject as a series and a Black woman playing the lead is icing on the cake or pigskin on the old baseball. Dub!! Empire

While the origin of the name elicits many theories, the dish itself is commonly made with rice and black-eyed peas, both readily available in the South and familiar ingredients to slaves native to West Africa. The authentic Gullah-style version is served in Sweet Home Cafe where the black-eyed peas are substituted with sea island red peas. The North States - Both freed people along with those who had escaped the chains of slavery found refuge and opportunity in the North. The offerings include northern indigenous products along with flavors and techniques that people brought with them upon their migration. Sample menu items offered: “Smoking Hot Caribbean-style Pepper Pot” - a dish inspired by the Caribbean and West Indian immigrant communities that have settled in the northeast. Thomas Downing-inspired NYC Oyster Pan Roast - named after a free African American from Virginia who relocated in New York City. Downing operated a renowned oyster cellar, Downing’s Oyster House. Downing and his son housed escaped slaves in their basement as part of the Underground Railroad. The Western Range - After the Civil War, many African Americans sought new opportunities in the West. This cuisine was strongly influenced by Native American and Mexican culture. Familiar ingredients such as corn, peaches, turkey and squashes took on new flavors by the addition of chilies, wild sage and Mexican oregano. Sample menu items offered: “Son of a Gun Stew” - amended from the more colorful version of the expression, a classic cowboy dish of the American West. Many freed slaves migrat-

Court Dorothy Brown, Cook County Comm. Richard Boykin, Rep. LaShawn K. Jones, Sacred Heart of Jesus, F. Scott Winslow, former CEO, Michael Reese Hospital, and others. Ford said Wilson “has picked up where government has let the people down. It’s already been proven constitutionally that it is unconstitutional to keep a person incarcerated for something

they have not done or bail they cannot afford.” Ford referred to a Georgia ruling that said holding people who cannot afford a bail in jail is against their liberty. “He should not have to put his money up to let people out of jail who should not be in jail,” said Ford. Ford vowed to reform the bail bond system. Boykin urged Wilson to “continue the spirit of generosity.” Brown said she was “amazed” after hearing about Wilson’s pilot bailout program of indigent detainees. “He signed all of the bonds and paid cash” for the six detainees.

They were given their discharge papers and placed in a van where they were also given a bag of food and taken home. A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe Speak it into the Atmosphere— your words have so much power. Life and death is in the power of your tongue (Proverbs 18:21). The sooner we realize that life doesn’t just happen, but is a direct result of what you say and believe the sooner we can get about living on purpose and receiving our heart’s desires. Also, don’t forget that repetition is the mother of learning—the more you hear—the more it gets into your spirit and becomes a part of your nature. If you hear a lie often enough you will begin to believe it. Scripture

reminds us that “…faith comes by hearing…” whatever you hear— positive or negative is what you will begin to believe and ultimately manifest into your world (Romans 10:17). That’s why it’s crucial you not only monitor what enters into your ear and eye gate—meaning what you hear (radio, negative conversations, gossip) and what you see (TV shows, scary graphic movies, pornography), but also, you must surround yourself with people that build you up and are positive role models. You need to be with folk who celebrate you and not just tolerate you. As you embrace these prin-

Get ready for the 2016 Conference: Speaking To The Challenges Facing Our Community. Many underserved communities in the city are struggling with a plethora of issues that have them feeling a sense of hopelessness and helplessness. These issues include but are not limited to: physical and mental health challenges, broken relationships, youth violence, and managing with little or no finances. As a faith-based institution, Pilgrim Baptist Church of South Chicago under the leadership of Pastor Corwin D. Lasenby, is committed to addressing these issues by engaging the community in active dialogue using individuals who have made working with those facing these challenges, their life’s work. Our 2016 Conference: Speaking To The Challenges Facing Our Community, is designed to do just that. The conference will occur on Friday, October 21st 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, October 22nd 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The 2016 Conference will be held at Baker College Prep High School located at 2710 E. 89th Street in Chicago. On Friday, there will be a Musical featuring our dynamic Choir and Praise Team, as well as Spoken Word by our Youth and Young Adults. On Saturday, we will have several workshops focusing on many of the challenges mentioned above. Effie Rolfe ciples and truths regarding your word power or the power of your word, there will be a marked change in your life. God spoke the heaven and earth into existence (Genesis 1:1). He took nothing and made everything that is, was and will be—through the power of His word. Remember, since we are His children, we have God’s spiritual DNA. In John 14:12, Jesus states

“Whosoever believes in me…shall do even greater works than these...” If you have the power of his Holy Spirit within you—it’s comparable to dunamis or dynamite power and when you speak words of life with purpose—things have got to change for the better. Immediately, begin your day by saying aloud what you truly desire with no limits. Forget about the limitations. Just speak aloud what your heart desires. Renowned author and life coach, Bob Proctor, believes that as you say what you want, you should also begin each sentence by saying, “I am grateful that I am….” You fill in the blanks. Again, say it each day and often throughout the day. Then take it another step and imagine how it would feel once you are your perfect dress size, or your bank account has 5 million dollars in it or you are able to vacation several times a year in beautiful countries and resorts. As you speak what you desire as though you already have what you are speaking with emotion and the belief that you have it, your faith will cause that to somehow miraculously happen. Again, speak the names of your loved ones, your potential employers, the exact dollar amount of the salary or whatever you desire to happen into the atmosphere. Remember, it must be with purpose. Thus, it cannot be a

desire for someone’s husband or wife, or wishing for somebody’s job—You must understand that God has more than enough to go around without taking something from someone else. Our heavenly father is the source of everything and God is inexhaustible. Ephesians 3:20 states, “Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.” By the way, unless you are thinking about something that seems impossible, chances are you are thinking too small. In other words, trust God for your own blessings—He has more than you could ever imagine and He really wants to blow your mind. When you speak, your words have power. When you truly believe what you say, put your faith to work and move toward what you want, watch God honor those words and eventually it will come to past. What are you speaking into the atmosphere…? © Effie Rolfe is an Author of “Supersize Your Thinking,” Media Personality and Motivational Speaker. Clark Atlanta won the war, but Central State and Rich Central won the battle Crusader staff report When the rain cleared, the battle began. When the sun went down, Central State University went with it in style while Clark Atlanta took home some hardware of its own. The 19th Annual Chicago Football Classic wrapped up another exciting year with a close game between two HBCU schools vying for bragging rights in Chicago’s Soldier Field September 10. In the end, Clark Atlanta’s Panthers won the game 2014, while Central State captured the Battle of the HBCU’s Bands. Meanwhile the South Shore Drill Team wowed the crowds after being forced out of this year’s Bud Billiken Parade. The football game capped a weekend of festivities that saw Rich Central High captured a third consecutive Battle of the High School Bands title with a new drum major. Once again the school dazzled the judges with a fresh set of routines while paying tribute to some of the biggest names in music, including those who have died this year. They included Prince, Maurice White from Earth

Wind and Fire, along with Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Tupak Shakur, whose fans are marking the 20th Anniversary of his death this year. This year’s competition had only half as many high school band participants. Organizers said bad weather throughout the week of the competition made it difficult for participants to practice and forced them to withdraw from the annual contest, which unlike last year, was held on the Great Lawn just east of Soldier Field. In all there were five bands in the high school battle of the bands competition this year. In addition to Rich Central, they included, Proviso West, Thornton Township, Rich South and Proviso East High School. The competition heated up as Thornton Township displayed dazzling showmanship in its opening number, but Thornton was no match for Rich Central. The far South Side school in Olympia Fields put on a show-stopping presentation that included choreographed splits and dance routines that drew loud cheers from spectators. CSU totaled 453 yards of total offense compared to CAU’s 348, but costly turnovers and errors in execution kept the Marauders from scoring throughout the afternoon. The

Marauders turned the ball over three times and were 0 for 4 in fourth down conversion attempts. The first score of the game came from CAU after the Marauders failed on their first fourth down attempt of the day. The Panthers capitalized with a 43 yard drive over six plays. Jaha McCray finished the drive with a 7-yard touchdown run. After a failed extra point attempt, CAU led 6-0 at the 11:11 mark of the opening quarter. CSU’s quarterback Lavon Meeks ran in for a touchdown to give the school its only lead of the afternoon, 7-6. The Panthers cashed in again on great field position late in the second quarter. Beginning the drive at the CSU 40 yard line, CAU went

40 yards on four plays capped by a Johnathon McCrary scramble into the end zone. Down 13-6 with 1:19 remaining, the Marauders struck quick when Meeks hit Marquis Wells on a 74-yard touchdown pass and catch to tie the game, 13-13. Clark Atlanta’s Matthew Daniels capped a drive with a 4-yard run to put his team up, 2013, with 1:56 remaining in the third quarter. CSU crossed midfield four times in the final 15 minutes but each drive failed to produce any points. With 1:32 remaining, Meeks led the Marauders down to CAU’s 35-yard line with seven seconds left. With limited time remaining, Meeks threw into heavy coverage and was intercepted by Jacob Mitchell as time expired.
