Alderman Beale responds to changes at Roseland Mental Health Clinic

By J. Coyden Palmer The Chicago Crusader published a story in December about the changes coming to one of the few remaining mental health clinics in the city. As the Crusader’s press deadline approached, this reporter was unable to reach Ald. Anthony Beale (9th) in whose ward the Roseland Mental Health Clinic, the subject of the story, is located.

The Crusader printed the story without his comments. Beale objected to some information the story contained and was offered the opportunity to respond. He accepted the invitation and visited the Crusader’s office on Jan. 5th to provide more details on what is happening at the Roseland Mental Health Clinic.

Mental Health Clinic. Beale said having the Cook County Health and Hospital System take over the clinic will benefit the community more, because they have more resources and will be able to handle more patients. He said the unique thing about the clinic is that it will house a 24-hour mental health triage team, meaning police who encounter mentally unstable people on the streets can bring them to the clinic instead of taking them to jail.

“We have a big mental health problem in my ward and this is a tool we can use to address the problem,” Beale said. “We need to get the people the help they need. It makes the job less dangerous for our officers and increases public safety.”

The Crusader questioned Beale if he was concerned or not about the county contracting some of the services out to the non-profit entity, Community Counseling Centers of Chicago (C4), which in May, 2015 closed its doors on its North Side clinic.

Beale said that like anything else when a

deal is made, you have to watch the people you contract with. Back in April of 2016, Beale said he would evaluate the situation for a year and then decide if the contract with the county should be renewed. He reiterated that point last week.

“I want to see progress. If I see the same person on the block consistently who I know is in need of mental health treatment, well that’s a sign that things aren’t going (Continued on page 3)

By Patrick Forrest President-elect Barack Obama won the election back in November 2008. The day was filled with hope as thousands of people from all walks of life clamored and screamed, “Yes we can, yes we can!” Obama had taken his supporters on a historical account of the experiences in the life of 106year-old Ann Nixon Cooper in his acceptance speech. Before he finished, he had invited the nation on a new journey to correct the wrongs and change things for the better.

His election represented a dream realized and the hopes of many, but especially for future generations of Blacks. The number of people that came to support him far exceeded the capacity of Grant Park on that unseasonably warm November day. Similarly, the day

President Barack Obama returned home to Chicago in the final days of his presidency to deliver his national farewell address.

He did so before a packed auditorium and cheering crowd at Chicago’s McCormick Place on Jan. 10.

“So, I first came to Chicago when I was in my early twenties, and I was still trying to figure out who I was; still searching for a purpose to my life. And, it was in a neighborhood not far from here where I began working with church groups in the shadows of closed steel mills,” Obama said.

“It was on these streets where I 2

witnessed the power of faith and the quiet dignity of working people in the face of struggle and loss.”

During his speech—slightly longer than 50 minutes—Obama marked his accomplishments over the past eight years and thanked those present, as well as those who could not be present, for the support they offered.

“If I had told you eight years ago that America would reverse a great recession, reboot our auto industry and unleash the longest stretch of job creation in our history…if I had told you that we would open up a new chapter with the Cuban people, shut down Iran’s nuclear weapons program without firing a shot, take out the mastermind of 911…if I had told you that we would win marriage equality and secure the

right to health insurance for another 20 million of our fellow citizens…if I had told you all that, you might have said our sights were set a little too high.”

Though the audience listened attentively, the thought of this being Obama’s final public address struck many and some could not hold back their emotions.

“I was there when he was in Grant Park in 2008—that was when all of this started, and to see this all come full turn, it’s a lot to handle,” stated Maria McClain.

The President took time to return to the tone of his 2008 campaign and compared it to today.

Specifically surrounding race relations, he observed there is still work to be done.

“After my election, there was talk of a post-racial America. And such a vision, however well in-

Obama did contend that though race relations are frequently the subject of news headlines and are not good at the moment; they are better than they have been in the past.

“Now, I’ve lived long enough to know that race relations are better than they were 10 or 20 or 30 years ago, no matter what some folks say,” Obama said. “You can see it not just in statistics. You see it in the attitudes of young Americans across the political spectrum.

But, we’re not where we need to be. And all of us have more work to do.”

Obama even laid out what he believes will help alleviate the problems.

“And we have shown that our economy doesn’t have to be a zerosum game. Last year, incomes rose for all races, all age groups, for men and for women,” Obama said. “So, if we’re going to be serious about race going forward, we need to uphold laws against discrimination—in hiring and in housing and in education and in

the criminal justice system.”

The President also thanked Vice President Joe Biden for being “the first and best executive decision” he ever made, as well as his wife, Michelle. As they exited the stage, cheers of “Yes we can, yes we did” could be heard throughout the auditorium.

“Michelle LaVaughn Robinson, girl of the South Side,” Obama said. “You took on a role you didn’t ask for. And you made it your own with grace and with grit and with style and good humor. You made the White House a place that belongs to everybody, and a new generation sets its sights higher because it has you as a role model.”

Obama’s second and final term as president will end Jan. 20 when President-elect Donald Trump assumes the office.

Comments, criticism and praise immediately followed Obama’s address.

Among those expressing positive remarks was Cong. Elijah E. Cummings, representing Maryl and’s 7th District. He noted that during his entire career in Congress, he had “never seen any president face the levels of obstruction that President Obama faced from congressional Republicans.”

In spite of that he said that Obama, in his farewell address, “exhibited the same poise and leadership he has exhibited since he was inaugurated in 2009.”

Attorneys for cop who killed Laquan McDonald want charges dropped

By J. Coyden Palmer Lawyers for Jason Van Dyke, the Chicago police officer charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Black teen Laquan McDonald in 2014, asked a Cook County judge on January 10 to dismiss the charges against Van Dyke.

Attorney Daniel Herbert argued that statements made by Van Dyke and other officers, which were used by prosecutors to bring charges in the case, are inadmissible in court. Van Dyke made statements to the Independent Police Review Authority and to the city’s Inspector General. Herbert argued in a three-page filing that “Garrity Rights” offer protections to public employees so they do not incriminate themselves during investigatory interviews conducted by their employers.

“The statements were given under duress and are protected by the immunity,” read a part of the motion filed by Herbert.

Cook County Judge Vincent Gaughan did not issue a ruling on the matter. Instead he said it will be addressed at the next hearing, scheduled for February 3. Van Dyke did not attend the hearing himself. His lawyers claim he and

his family have received death threats since the case became public last year.

The video of Van Dyke shooting McDonald, who was walking away from the officer with a knife in his hand, was not released until a year after the shooting, after a judge ordered the city to do so.

The video’s release caused months of protests in the city, along with calls for the resignation of Mayor Rahm Emanuel and several city council members who signed off on a multimillion dollar settlement with the McDonald family.

Former Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez was also accused of not doing her job, because she did not levy charges against McDonald until after the video was made public. Alvarez was voted out of office last year, losing to Kim Foxx, an opponent who promised during the campaign that she and her office will prosecute officers who do wrong.

Attorneys for Van Dyke also asked Gaughan to give them the juvenile records of Laquan McDonald. Requests made on two previous occasions for the records were denied by another judge.

Beale spokesperson Brian Berg added that C4 has a “good track record of providing mental health care services in communities on the North Side.” He said the city and county had worked together to ensure a smooth transition for all clients, which has included phone calls, letters and other forms of communication to let people know what is happening.

Beale claimed that he was unaware that C4 had closed one of its facilities on the North Side without warning, unexpectedly leaving hundreds of patients with nowhere to go. He said during the meeting with the Crusader that he will now keep an eye on the company. Both he and Berg added

that closure of the Roseland Mental Health Clinic will not happen because of an agreement between the county and city that requires the clinic to remain in operation and that all current clients will be seen at the new facility for as long as they require services.

In the Crusader article, a proposed ordinance by Ald. Jason Ervin (28th) was mentioned that would provide some protections to mental health patients. Support for the ordinance was signed by 31 of 50 aldermen, but Beale was not one of them. He said he had no knowledge of the proposed ordinance sponsored by Ervin. The ordinance has not been presented to the full City Council.

Beale said it is important to note that the clinic will now be able to serve youth patients, which is an expansion of services at the Roseland location.

Laquan McDonald with a knife and behaving erratically in the area of 47th and Pulaski, according to witnesses who called the police. When officers arrived they chased McDonald on foot and then eventually followed him a few blocks south on Pulaski Street from their squad cars, and on foot. Nearly a dozen officers were on the scene when Van Dyke and his partner arrived.

Van Dyke jumped from the passenger’s seat with his gun drawn and within a few seconds began firing over a dozen rounds into McDonald’s body, as seen on the

video. He continued to fire even after McDonald was on the ground, helpless and writhing in pain. No other officers fired a shot during the incident. A total of 16 shots were fired at McDonald by Van Dyke.

However, many other officers were disciplined in the case, which has drawn national outrage. One officer resigned; two others retired. According to the city, five are in the process of being fired, including Van Dyke.

The city said the officers made false statements in the case Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson filed administrative charges against Officers Van Dyke, Janet Mondragon, Daphne Sebastian, Ricardo Viramontes and Sgt. Stephen Franko back in August. Their cases will be heard by the Chicago Police Board, which will rule as to whether or not the officers will be terminated.

On December 23, 2016, city Inspector General Joseph Ferguson recommended that four additional officers be disciplined in the case, bringing the total number to 15. The names of the latest four officers were not made public, but police spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said none of them were recommended to be

President Barack Obama, who ironically was in town to give his farewell speech to the nation on the same day Van Dyke’s lawyers filed the motion, ordered the Justice Department to do an investigation into the city’s police department in the wake of the McDonald case. Justice Department findings are expected to be released before the President leaves office on Jan. 20.

Kim Foxx making history again in diversifying her office

By Chinta Strausberg Just in office a few weeks, Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx is diversifying her office at historic levels “We are actively reorganizing the States Attorney’s office, being mindful about diversity in our senior leadership positions,” Foxx told the Chicago Crusader.

“We’ve hired our chief diversity officer, and we will be announcing several executive level leadership positions that will be filled with people of color for the first time ever.

“We are looking at our procedures and protocols for police involved shootings and hopefully within the next several weeks we will be unveiling a new protocol,” she said.

Kim Foxx county’s top prosecutor, and vows to bring “transparency and justice” to that office. Foxx is actively trying to visit every community her office serves and is “partnering with community organizations and other elected officials to meet our constituents where they are,” she said.

Asked about the U.S. Justice Department’s waning existence

and its report on the Chicago Police Department, Foxx said the DOJ will release its report on the pattern of practice investigation into the Chicago Police Department this Friday.

“The word that I received from various sources is that we can expect to see that report as early as Friday, January 13th,” Foxx said.

SPIRITUAL RETARDATION IN AMERICA A big story that has surfaced recently involves four African American youths, ages 18–24, who held a mentally challenged white youth in bondage while they tortured him. The perpetrators are now in custody and will stand trial for the dastardly act. Allegedly, they shouted racial epithets at their captive, and used the name Trump while abusing their victim. Interestingly, the teen was a friend of one of his attackers and was in Chicago visiting him.

The young man eventually escaped, and is now recovering from non-life-threatening injuries, but he will undoubtedly suffer psychological damage from the experience. This was a terrible act by any standards of morality. Even though this is a true story, a lot of African Americans can’t help but recall a situation some time ago where white teens invited two Black friends to a gathering and ended up torturing and killing them.

Admittedly, there was publicity around the situation, but it seems that the outcry around this most recent event is overkill.

Though both acts were egregious, the Black teens SEEM to be getting far more attention than their white counterparts, even though their victim was not killed, as were the Black teens who were victimized by their white friends. The truth of the matter, however, is that two wrongs don’t make a right.

We can’t blame every outrageous act on president-elect Donald Trump, but we can acknowledge the fact that his reckless xenophobic rhetoric has helped set the tone for an increasing degeneracy among the American populace. On the other hand, we must also admit the fact that general decency in America has been eroding for quite a few years. Ultimately, the blame for all of the evil mayhem in our country (and our world) boils down to spiritual retardation.

This is the real problem! For example, one of the young ladies implicated in the attack on the white youth allegedly went downstairs to her neighbor’s home, who had complained about the noise, and verbally abused the woman and allegedly stole items from her home. That was an example of spiritual retardation!

The climate in this country (and around the globe) is increasingly volatile, as shown by the growing numbers of random attacks on citizens in public places. People are stirred up, frustrated, and they are taking it out on those who have nothing to do with their circumstances. We are becoming an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth society. No one wins in that kind of scenario.

And the sad fact is that we stand to get further involved in retaliatory behavior, since our incoming political leader, the most powerful man in the free world, advocates the use of that strategy.

One of the reasons that people feel emboldened to behave in a manner that is selfish and, actually evil, is because people have been convinced that there will be no repercussions. A great number of people have completely embraced a materialistic outlook on life and refuse to believe that anything else exists; they refuse to believe that you reap what you sow.

One of the things exacerbating this situation is the behavior of religious and political leaders who are blatant advocates of materialism. People have been known to complain about leaders who have prosperity as a goal, without connecting the dots between people’s actions and the responsibility that we all have for one another.

Whatever affects one group on this planet will affect everyone else, one way or another. Snowballing crime in urban areas causes people to move away, leaving those behind with few resources.

Whites who want to rid the world of Blacks and others, are showing deep, deep spiritual retardation, in that it takes all kinds to keep the world productive.

A need for diversity is real, and those who do not understand this run the risk of making it bad for everyone. Just ask someone who survived the decimation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the last World War. If something like that should happen again, there will be greater consequences because more nations possess nuclear weapons. Yet, some of the world’s current leaders are still willing to play footsie with the notion of an arms race.

Heaven forbid if the spiritually retarded camp wins out. If it does, the biblical admonition of “The fire next time” just might come true. A luta continua.

In an article in the Buffalo, NY alt magazine Artvoice, Buffalo developer, school board member and former Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino is quoted as saying in 2017 he would like to see President Barack Obama catch mad cow disease and die.

Responding to what he would like to see go away in 2017, Paladino responded: “Michelle Obama. I’d like her to return to being a male and let loose in the outback of Zimbabwe where she lives comfortably in a cave with Maxie, the gorilla.”

Given the chance to walk back these execrable remarks, Paladino said, “Yeah, I’m not politically correct ... they asked what I want for Christmas and I told them.”

This is not the first time Paladino has made such repellent comments about President Obama. In April 2010, the millionaire acknowledged forwarding emails, including images of bestiality and derogatory characterizations of the president, including one offering a video clip of an African tribesman dancing that characterized the video as “Barack Obama’s inauguration rehearsal.”

So what has been the reaction from the president-elect? After all, Paladino is a personal friend, longtime supporter, and former co-chair of

What’s Wrong with Senator Sessions? Nothing Beyond the Rhetoric

By Harry C. Alford Unless you think all conservative Republicans are bad, I dare you to find anything horrible about Senator Jeff Sessions.

There is an immense outcry by Democrats and a few civil rights advocates of whom I find little credibility. I haven’t seen such an organized character assassination since the nomination of Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court.

Why do they hate him? I believe it is all about politics. He is so loved by his constituents who are 27 percent Black. He is so loved that not one person opposed him during his last election. Has any other senator won by a margin of 97 percent?

Maybe he is picked out for character assassination because he speaks with a deep southern drawl and is from the old Jim Crow state of Alabama which is very republican in its voting pattern. His appearance and demeanor can give people the impression of a mean person. His conservatism is clearly apparent and unbending. These things can drive a progressive liberal to action. That action can be extreme enough to make impressionable people join in on the hatred.

Perhaps the biggest reason for

He hosted a big rally for him in Madison, Alabama and that infuriated democrats. The Senator is also an advisor and confidant of Trump. Those democrats who are still in a state of shock about the election see the

Senator as a soft target to voice their outrage.

The democrats are going to push against every cabinet nominee that Trump nominates. For the above reasons, this is going to be one they fight against most.

By their reasoning, he is the “Devil.” He fiercely fights against illegal immigration. Also, he has no tolerance for amnesty and isn’t too fond of legal immigration because migrants are willing to work for cheap labor and compete against middle class wages.

For this and his conservative southern mannerisms he is called a racist. Just like they smeared Trump as an evil racist.

He is also a climate change skeptic and that makes the environmentalists rise against him.

These are the people who have no tolerance for any doubters. So now we have the radical side of the democratic party, the environmentalists and minorities ganging up on this public servant. He has been nominated as Attorney General of the United States. First, Trump will become President of the United States and now this “boogey man” is going to enforce law over all of us. They can’t handle it.

There is also something else that is bothering the left side of the political spectrum. If he becomes Attorney General will

Hillary Clinton be at risk. She undoubtedly has been protected from prosecution for all the possible crimes she has committed during her tenure of Secretary of State. Jeff Sessions as an Attorney General will bring anyone to justice who has broken the law.

Bringing Hillary Clinton to justice would be an extreme legacy of corruption and maybe many Americans could not mentally handle that. Thus, many feel this person, Jeff Sessions, must be stopped.

They are trying to take a fine American away from his destiny.

He has an impeccable record and has worked diligently towards serving the state of Alabama and its citizens. One of his major accomplishments as Attorney General for Alabama is his crushing victory over the Ku Klux Klan.

He brought them to their knees.

However, his political enemies call him a racist as if he is a friend of the Klan. They seem to ignore that as the negative propaganda rolls on and on.

The senate must stand firm against all this propaganda and do the right thing. His confirma-

tion would be consistent with the hard work and determination he has displayed while serving his civic duties. Blacks who have worked under him are proud of their experience. They aren’t complaining.

The media who constantly maligned the character of Donald Trump quickly switched gears after the election and pounced on this gentleman from Alabama.

They call him a racist although his son-in-law is Asian and sat behind him during the hearings. There have been no discrimination lawsuits against him.

Consumers to receive over $17 million, thanks to CFPB Dodd-Frank Reform Act violations hold credit reporting agencies accountable

By Charlene Crowell Millions of consumers who were duped into paying fees for their own credit scores will soon receive more than $17.6 million, thanks to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Affected consumers can expect to receive notification letters in the mail.

TransUnion and Equifax, two of the nation’s largest credit reporting agencies, sold credit scores, credit reports and credit monitoring services to consumers although the “credit scores” sold were not typically used by lenders to make credit decisions. As a result, what consumers paid to these two firms was of questionable value.

As credit scores are often cited as the basis for many consumers of color to either be denied access to credit or be charged higher than average interest rates, it is likely that many will also be eligible for restitution. TransUnion must now provide restitution of $13.9 million to affected consumers, while Equifax’s cost of restitution is $3.8 million. Assessed fines on the violations will www.chicagocrusader.coM

add additional costs of $3 million to TransUnion and $2.5 million for Equifax.

“TransUnion and Equifax deceived consumers about the usefulness of the credit scores they marketed, and lured consumers into expensive recurring payments with false promises,” said CFPB Director Richard Cordray. “Credit scores are central to a consumer’s financial life and people deserve honest and accurate information about them.”

Both TransUnion and Equifax are charged with violations of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Financial Protection Act from 2011 to 2014 and included: • Deceiving consumers about the value of the credit scores they sold; and • Deceiving consumers into enrolling in subscription programs.

In its advertising, Equifax falsely claimed that credit scores and credit-related products were free.

In the case of TransUnion, the cost was promised to be only $1.

What neither made clear to consumers was that unless the ‘service’ was cancelled during its 30-

Additionally, Equifax violated the Fair Credit Reporting Act, which requires a credit reporting agency to provide a free credit re-

port once every 12 months and to operate a central source – AnnualCreditReport.com – where consumers can get their report.

Until January 2014, consumers getting their report through Equifax first had to view Equifax advertisements – another illegal act. By law, such advertising is allowed after consumers receive their report.

Beyond the costs of restitution and fines, CFPB will now hold Equifax and TransUnion accountable for changes in the way they operate. From clearly informing consumers about the nature of the scores they are selling to consumers; to providing simple, easy to understand information on how to cancel the purchase of any credit-related product, and ending billing and collection payments for any recurring charge once a consumer cancels the service.

The two final enforcement requirements are probably the most important of all: 1. Before enrolling a consumer in any credit-related product with a negative option feature, TransUnion and Equifax must

obtain the consumer’s consent; and 2. Truthfully represent the value or usefulness of products sold.

“We applaud the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau for taking strong and vigorous actions against TransUnion and Equifax to protect the interests of American consumers,” said National Consumer Law Center staff attorney Chi Wu. “In addition to obtaining tens of millions of dollars in relief for consumers, this consent order will protect consumers from being ripped off in the future over deceptive credit monitoring products and sales practices.”

EXAMINING OUR INTELLECTUAL CRISIS THE 50TH YEAR Negro Intellectual, published in 1967 at the height of the Black Power Movement. This insightful book stirred up a spirited conversation in the African Liberation Movement.

That conversation revolves around the weaknesses of our movement, the direction of our movement, and the inability of some of the leaders and thinkers of our movement to understand what Brother Cruse calls “The Great American Ideal.”

This problem continues to linger with us today.

Brother Cruse spent most of his activist and organizing days in Harlem, New York, from the 1940s until he accepted a professorship in 1967 at the University of Michigan and helped develop their Black Studies Program. In Harlem, Brother Cruse was an active participant for over twenty years in most of the major organizing activities that swept through New York. The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual is a summation of those experiences as it related to the literature and history of the African Liberation Movement.

This year, 2017, marks the 50th year of the publication of The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual. ment and many of its well-known leaders. Therefore, the book was blocked in many circles from receiving the kind of legitimacy its substance deserved.

However, a small group of scholars/activists have discussed and debated Brother Cruse’s ideas during this 48 year period, and organized study groups from time to time that have aided in understanding the ideas that Cruse presents in his book.

When we use the term intellectual, we are talking about people who struggle around ideas— writers, poets, scholars, researchers, teachers, students, and activists. Intellectuals are people who grapple with ideas and who function in the cultural, political, educational, and economic domains of the society. As Dr. Anderson Thompson always says, “Ideas are weapons of war.”

With this definition, let us review briefly some of the ideas and concepts that Brother Cruse presented in The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual.

One of the major points Cruse makes is that the African American intellectuals are pathological in their approach to the choices available to them. It is Cruse’s observation that they appear to adopt the values of the dominant group, which he describes as the white Anglo Saxon

Protestant.

It was in the first chapter of The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual that Cruse raised this question of the problem of identity of the African in America people. The question of our identity still remains a fundamental problem with the African in America Community today. There is a tendency in the African in America Community to identify with, emulate, and support other races and ethnic groups at the expense of our own race.

Cruse illustrated this in his book when he described the following: “In 1940, as one of my first acts in the pursuit of becoming a more social being, I joined a YMCA amateur drama group in Harlem. I wanted to learn about theater so I became a stage technician— meaning a handyman for all backstage chores.

But the first thing about this drama group that struck me as highly curious was the fact that all the members were overwhelmingly in favor of doing white plays with Negro casts.”

Cruse continued on this point, “I wondered why, and very naively expressed my sentiments about it. The replies that I got clearly indicated these amateur actors were not very favorable to the play about Negro life, although they would not plainly say so. Despite the fact that this ques-

tion of identity was first presented to me within the context of the program of a small, insignificant amateur drama group, its implications ranged far beyond.”

Another problem Cruse addresses is that the African in America intellectual’s conceptualization of our condition is not based on the ethnic reality of America. The American Ideal espouses one set of principles through the Constitution, but the basis of reality of this society is founded on ethnic and religious pluralism not individualism, according to Brother Cruse.

From the point of view of Brother Cruse, the African in America intellectual is not accepted by whites and does not identify with his own racial group. Cruse concludes that the crisis of the African in America intellectual is an identity crisis, and misunderstanding of the false postulation of the American Ideal.

For Brother Cruse, the crisis was whether the African in America intellectual would accept the challenge of being the spokesman or spokeswoman of the African in America masses. Setting guidelines for our movement and understanding the issues of our race, making proper analyses, and proceeding to help build our movement, is still the crisis we face today.

WHITE WOMEN CAN’T SPEAK FOR ME, SO I WILL SUPPORT THE WOMEN’S MARCH

By Julianne Malveaux “Ain’t I A Woman?” railed Sojourner Truth. “I have ploughed and planted and gathered into barns, and no man could head me! And ain’t I a woman? I could work as much and eat as much as a man – when I could get it – and bear the lash as well. And ain’t I a woman? I’ve borne thirteen children and seen most all sold off and when I cried out with my mother’s grief, none but Jesus heard me! And ain’t I a woman?”

The similarities and differences between Black and white women are captured in that famous Sojourner Truth speech, December, 1851.

She movingly talks about the men who say women should be “helped into carriages, and moved over ditches, and have the best place everywhere,” while “nobody ever helps me into carriages or over mud puddles, or gives me any best place.”

Both Black and white women cry a mother’s grief for the loss of a child, and both endure labor pains. Black women’s lives, while similar, are different and more often disadvantaged, because they lack the privileges that white 6

women so easily take for granted, and often fail to notice or remedy.

Thus it did not surprise me that a white woman in Hawaii called for a “Million Women’s March” on Washington to take place on the day after the Presidential inauguration. And it did not surprise me when white women took up the call. Too bad these same white women did not advocate more forcefully against the man who won the Electoral College vote.

My first inclination was to ignore this women’s march. The organizers have repeatedly struck me as tone-deaf and indifferent to the diverse needs of women. But when I talked to Tamika Mallory, the dynamic young woman activist who was once Executive Director of Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network, I shifted my perspective.

Tamika shared that, just a few days after the initial Call to March was issued, organizers reached out to her asking for help. She said they “needed to ensure that women of color were involved.”

I applaud Tamika Mallory. She told me “I was not willing to let this convening come together without having Black women involved.”

I applaud the diversity in leadership, but wonder how many women of color will turn out on January 21. Tens of thousands of

women from all over the country are expected, with more than 100,000 saying they plan to be there.

But many African American women have looked askance, perhaps with distaste, at the appropriation of the initial organizing, cultural descriptive, “Million Women’s March.” Perhaps it’s because we recoil from the strong support white women gave the President-elect, choosing race loyalty over gender, class, or personal interest.

In other words, white women cannot speak for all women. If white women had their way, the March and rally would probably focus only on equal pay and reproductive rights. Thanks to Tamika and her colleagues, a statement of principles to be issued next week will also address racial justice, police brutality, criminal justice reform, and mass incarceration.

Absent the involvement of young Black women like Tamika, it would be extremely easy for me to ignore this March. But because some women have drawn a line in the sand and insisted on space for Black women in this March, they deserve support.

They remind me of the women of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,

Inc., who in 1913 elbowed their way into the Women’s Suffrage March when their involvement was unwelcome. They reminded the Women’s Suffrage Association that Black women were also women, and we would not be excluded.

Now, white women are at it again, but strong, brave, Black women, the descendants of Ida B. Wells, aren’t willing to sit on the sidelines.

The march is to remind all watching that “women’s rights are human rights.”

Black women’s rights will be considered in this gathering because some Black women dared place themselves in an uncomfortable space (working with privileged white women is never easy) in order to make a difference.

Democrats Search for the Next Obama

By Stacy M. Brown (NNPA Newswire Contributor) She’s a lawyer by trade and an accomplished politician who in November became just the second African-American woman to become a U.S. Senator.

He’s considered a favorite to become the next head of the Democratic National Committee.

Senator Kamala Harris of California and Rep. Keith Ellison of Minnesota are among the new movers and shakers of the Democratic Party.

But, are they the next Barack Obama?

That’s what many Democrats are wondering.

Obama’s meteoric rise was first

the Democratic National Convention and then went on to win election to the senate later that year.

America’s 44th president is now completing his second and final term in the Oval Office and his party is in a state of disarray after Hillary Clinton’s disappointing loss to Donald Trump in November.

The unexpected and epic loss means that Democrats have four years to come up with the right candidate, someone who might just be African-American or a woman.

Harris and Ellison are among the names political watchers have bandied about along with New Jersey’s Corey Booker and even

Senator Kamala Harris detected in 2004 — four years before stunning the world to become the first Black president.

He’d given a powerful keynote at

CNN contributor and former White House aide Van Jones.

“Barack Obama will be a hard act to follow,” said Riley H.

Rogers, the mayor of Dolton, Illinois, which is just south of the president’s hometown of Chicago. “Everything came into alignment and facilitated Obama’s victory.”

Rogers, who was selected as a floor delegate at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, Pa., said that Obama is a brilliant and unique individual who came at the right time, but he believes there are others who can ascend to the national stage and become leaders.

“There are some bright stars in the Democratic Party such as Senator Napoleon Harris and Congresswoman Robin Kelly,” Rogers said.

The 6-foot-3 and 250 pound Harris, a former pro football player and current Illinois state senator, made news recently when he was ambushed by four men as he was delivering a pizza for a franchise that he owns. Harris survived the attack and helped police track down his assailants, who were later linked to a murder.

Kelly succeeded Jesse Jackson Jr. as the Illinois lawmaker in the House of Representatives and she’s been mentioned throughout the Chicago area for more than a decade as a potential star.

Rogers, a member of the African American Mayors Association, said there’s a need for someone with new ideas and leaders with a vision.

“Not just the same ideas of the past,” he said. “The next elected official who captures that energy can be successful, but it won’t be

Several others noted that Corey Booker, who was on the short list for vice president under Clinton before she chose Tim Kaine, has to be considered as a rising star.

“There’s Kamala Harris and Senator Corey Booker who has risen to fame because of his youth, fresh ideas and political intellect,” said Jasmine Burney, a Floridabased political consultant and founder of the online community, “Chicks ‘n Politics.”

Burney continued: “Booker possesses the same hope that Obama had when he was first introduced to us during his first DNC speech, which mirrored a speech Booker gave this past summer at the DNC.” Booker has proven to have the political stamina needed to take on a seat in the United States Congress when there have only been a total of nine [AfricanAmericans] in that seat in U.S. history, she said.

“Now, there are 10 with the ad-

dition of Senator Kamala Harris who is only the second AfricanAmerican woman in United States history to hold that seat,” Burney said. “Harris is paving the way for many minorities to follow as she currently employs the only African-American Legislative Director in the Senate. She’s reaching back as she climbs and training a team around her for a successful term and possibly a move to the next level of leadership.”

Much is to be said about rising stars who aren’t already holding an office, Burney noted, adding that Van Jones and Angela Rye both fit that mold.

“Both are political commentators and they each lead political firms that focus on an array of issues from technology to environmental justice,” she said. “Their depth on the issues make them a real asset as advisors, cabinet members or even high-profile seats in the future.”

Youth organize delegation to attend Jan 21 Women’s March on Washington As part of a national and statewide movement, the Women’s March on Washington – Illinois Youth Chapter will join thousands of people in Washington D.C. on January 21st, the day after the inauguration of President-elect Trump. They will stand in solidarity against the hateful rhetoric of this past election cycle.

Chicago teenagers Chloe Wagner and Morenike Fabiyi, juniors at Francis W. Parker High School, have been working with the Women’s March on Washington – Illinois Chapter, and Chicago Women Take Action, to coordinate sending a group of teens from the Chicagoland area to Washington to attend the march. Wagner and Fabiyi’s efforts include raising funds to subsidize the cost for the teens, and raising awareness among their peers.

“The 2016 election left me feeling confused and vulnerable. Knowing that many youths felt the same way, Chloe and I created the Illinois Youth Chapter in order to let our peers know that their voices are valuable,”

Fabiyi said. “It is critical to us that youths are involved in this movement and we are excited to lead a group of peers that will be politically engaged in the future.”

“The Illinois Youth Chapter, a diverse group of teens, will march along with thousands of people in Washington D.C. to take a stand for the causes that they believe in most. The inability to vote, for youths under 18, in this past election, left many feeling powerless in our schools and communities.

We hope to give rise to a new group of teens who are engaged and active in political communities despite the fact that we are unable to vote,” Chloe Wagner stated.

Comcast joins LISC Southwest Corridor Collaborative Collaborative’s goal to revitalize south side retail areas Comcast late last year joined the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), several community organizations, and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel to launch the “Southwest Corridor Collaborative� (SWCC). A global telecommunications conglomerate, Comcast is the largest broadcasting and cable company in the world by revenue.

The goal of this economic development partnership is to revitalize retail corridors on the South Side of Chicago through investments in real estate, housing, small businesses, transit, and employment opportunities.

The first project of this kind on the south side was the development of the Englewood Square shopping center which houses some national businesses including Whole Foods Market, Starbucks, Chipotle and several other businesses. In line with its commitment to closing the digital divide, Comcast expanded its advanced telecommunications network to Englewood Square.

The goal of the collaborative is to reestablish key sections of the corridor as strong, viable and walkable

communities by creating crosscommunity commercial centers that provide business opportunities, local employment, accessible transit, housing, and goods and services for neighborhood residents.

LISC has pledged $500,000 in seed funding to the SWCC and an additional $50 million investment over the next 10 years.

Comcast was an early supporter of LISC’s vision, committing both financial resources to the initiative and serving on a steering committee to attract more businesses to the project. Other community-based organizations, including Teamwork Englewood, the Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corporation and the Southwest Organizing Project, have joined with Chicago Cares, World Business Chicago and a number of banks and elected officials in support of the initiative.

Concordia-Chicago’s Center for Language and Literacy announces expanded leadership team, spacious new campus location The Center for Language and Literacy at Concordia University Chicago has moved to a new location in the Christopher Center on the University’s River Forest campus. The transfer of resources from the Center’s smaller, prior location began in August 2016, and is expected to be fully completed in early 2017.

An initiative spearheaded by Dr. Thomas Jandris, then Dean of the College of Graduate and Innovative Programs, the Center has expanded at an unexpected pace since its founding three years ago. Anticipating future growth, an expansion was deemed necessary to accommodate the needs of both teachers and learners.

“Our new facility alongside the University’s education library is filled with natural light and a wonderful sense of calm,” reported Dr. Veronica Richard, a Center director. “Individuals and small groups will find the new location to be conducive to focus-

ing, learning, and interacting with staff and fellow students.”

Simultaneous with its move to a new physical space, the Center’s administrative team has been expanded to include four Concordia-Chicago faculty members.

Dr. Dara Soljaga continues her role as the Center’s executive director. Richard will assume the role of director of adolescent and adult literacy programs. Dr. Simeon Stumme, a key contributor to the Center since its inception, will serve as director of English learner programs. Dr. Kari Pawl has been appointed director of the Center’s early childhood education and elementary programs.

“The expansion of our leadership team through the appointments of Richard, Stumme, and Pawl—all gifted, experienced professionals—will set us up to better serve our community,” explained Soljaga, who also serves as chair of the department of literacy and early childhood educa-

As it begins its fourth year of operation, the Center for Language and Literacy continues to fulfill its mission as an institution committed to creating access to meaningful and innovative language and literacy-related experiences in research, education, practice, service and scholarship. The Center fosters responsive collaborations, policy efforts, and advocacy programs for the greater community and university addressing language and literacy development.

“We are proud of the Center’s success in inspiring external support, allowing us to be a self-funding unit of Concordia-Chicago,” said Soljaga. “At the same time, we are well on our way toward achieving our longstanding goal of earning recognition nationally as a hub for literacy research and innovation.”

The positive impact of the Center’s suite of programs is felt by students in elementary, middle

and high schools throughout the Chicago area, as well as by language and literacy educators. The Center draws hundreds of students and adults annually for targeted programs, delivered through the school year and intensive summer programs. In addition, Center staff members have partnered with public and private/parochial schools to deliver quality programs in historically underserved neighborhoods and populations.

Looking forward, the Center anticipates continued growth in the delivery of its mission-based teaching and training products.

“We are excited to be on the cutting edge of language and literacy programs,” explained Soljaga.

“And as we refine and enhance the way we work with those we serve, our results and research will be shared with other language and literacy experts around the world, compounding the benefit of the pioneering work we do in this region.”

The program will present dialogue about a present day response to the same issues of immigration, poverty and violence that Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement faced. PUSH Excel is the educational arm of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, founded and lead by Rev. Jackson. The breakfast, honoring the work and memory of Dr. King, will raise money for college scholarships for financially challenged students. Some 2,249 scholarships

Joyce Johnson-Miller, the Executive Vice President of Quadrum Global, will now serve as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees after being elected by the Board on Monday, November 21, 2016.

Among the newly elected Board Members is Chancelor “Chance the Rapper” Bennett, the highly popular American hip hop artist who recently made history by receiving seven 2016 Grammy Award nominations including, “Best New Artist” and “Best Rap Album” for “Coloring Book,” a first for a “streaming-only” album. Hailing from the West Chatham neighborhood, Bennett has become one of music’s most prominent and prolific artists and was named a 2015 ‘Chicagoan of the Year’ by Chicago Magazine.

“Hidden Figures,” which is heavy on the math, is a great movie for all family members, particularly young Black girls who are interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) professions.

“Moonlight,” which also stars Mahershala Ali, won a Golden Globe for Best Picture and is an unforgettable film at the intersection of race, sexuality, masculinity, identity, family, and love, and establishes Jenkins as a major American filmmaker for his abili-

THE BOOK WORM SEZ “Writing to Save a Life: The Louis Till File”

For most of your life, you were known as Little Him. Junior. Insertyour-father’s-name-here’s kid. You’re a chip off the ol’ block, maybe named after your Pops, forever known as your Dad’s offspring. But, as John Edgar Wideman indicates in “Writing to Save a Life: The Louis Till File,” that doesn’t mean that the supposed sins of a father should be laid at the feet of his child.

On a hot Chicago summer day in 1955, fourteen-year-old Emmett Till took a train south to visit family in Mississippi. He left with a sense of excitement and came home in a specially-ordered, glass-lidded coffin, because his mother wanted “the world” to know what had happened to him.

There was, of course, a trial for his

murder, and fourteen-year-old John Edgar Wideman watched it unfold.

He’d always wanted to write “Emmett Till fiction” but real-life turned out to be more compelling: two weeks before the Grand Jury convened, someone leaked Emmett’s father’s confidential military records, revealing that Private Louis Till had been hanged in Italy a decade earlier for the crimes of rape and murder.

The revelation changed the expected outcome of the trial.

In that same summer of 1955, Wideman fell in love, became brokenhearted, and saw pictures of dead Emmett in Jet magazine. That summer, he was sad, confused, angry and so, he says, was his father. There were other parallels, too; so many lines drawn from fathers to sons that made Wideman and his dad “afraid of each other.”

With that in mind, Wideman requested Louis Till’s file and discovered “helter-skelter” papers and a “hodgepodge of this and that…” Till had been just “a kid” when hanged, the probable victim of an “ugly story.”

Had he been around to “school his son… about the south,” would Emmett have come home alive? Can a

man change the outcome of his child’s existence?

Though “Writing to Save a Life” is an intriguing, even provocative book, it may be a struggle to read. For sure, it’s going to take some getting used to.

With news clips, files, history, current events, and reconstructions of what might have happened decades ago to Louis, Mamie, and Emmett Till, author John Edgar Wideman melts his own experiences and his imagination. That’s a great method of storytelling, and it lends urgency and relevancy but it’s not very well delineated here – meaning that it sometimes takes a minute to understand when this book takes a fictional turn and when it turns back again. That can be a distraction, even as those switch-and-switch-backs add to the emotional feel of the story. Purists may also find an occasional lack of punctuation to be quite irritating.

And yet – keep reading. This is a hard-hitting, raw-spirited tale that ultimately gets under your skin, and it’ll make you think about fathers, sons, and what they might leave one another. Keep reading – because “Writing to Save a Life” may become a book you can’t forget, even if you wanted to.

You have your own imagination.

Use it to visualize your dreams, desires and God given potential. Albert Einstein said, “Imagination is greater than knowledge!” This concept is proven over and over again.

To me imagination is being alive and one of the most precious gifts given to man. Imaging without imagination? No way! All that you see begins with imagination.

Look at yourself. It was through God’s imagination that we were beautifully formed in His very own image (Psalm 139:14). Imagination literally means to form into purpose or squeeze into shape.

God squeezed us into shape for His good pleasure. You are undoubtedly a purposeful part of the Master’s plan. Amen, somebody!

Let’s talk Bill Gates. He makes an estimated $385,000 a second,

which is equal to 23 million dollars a day. Can you imagine that amount of wealth? Maybe, maybe not… After all, your imagination is undeniably your imagination. “…and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.” (Genesis 11: 6) Your destiny is not dependent on what people say or think. God’s plan and purpose concerning your life is specific and individually tailored for you only. (Jer. 29:11).

Therefore, any attempts to sabotage or undermine you will boomerang. The Bible refers to this ungodly act as heaping coals of fire upon oneself.

Clearly, sabotage at the core is self-destruction. An attempt to hold you back is a direct affront to creation, more importantly, to the Creator. Whatever God has created to come forth through you, must come forth. Never ever conform to fear or self-will. God’s will

I once heard on the Oprah Winfrey Show that by the time women in Kuwait reach the age of 30 they each have mansions. This is a rich example of the Christian’s life.

Deuteronomy 28 states, “We are the head and not the tail, the lender and not the borrower, above only and not beneath.”

Unfortunately, most of what Christians possess is borrowed. We wear borrowed clothes, sleep in borrowed beds, live in borrowed homes, drive borrowed cars, use borrowed computers, as well as borrow more money to eat out, vacation, or to pay the bills for the things that are already borrowed. I know that this may sound redundant, but anything that you don’t own is borrowed. We are really slaves to our creditors, whereas, the Bible clearly states to “owe no man nothing but brotherly love.” Proverbs 22 states, “…the

borrower is servant to the lender.”

I remember words in a song by Keith Pringle that asked the following question: Why should I be bound when Christ has set me free? The choice is yours. You don’t have to be bound! You can be free! Don’t leave your life to chance, use up what God has given you—your life depends on it.

The Crusader Gospel Corner Singer Kim Burrell has been in the hot seat lately, receiving massive backlash regarding a sermon she preached during a worship service and mentioned that a ‘homosexual lifestyle was perverted.’

According to a YouTube video, Burrell further stated that God doesn’t like any ‘sin.’ Then the unthinkable happened. A member of the audience recorded a specific segment of the former BET Sunday Best vocal coach’s anti-gay statements. It was also disclosed to this congregation that Bishop Eddie Long has AIDs. As a result of this untimely incident, Ellen DeGeneres cancelled Ms. Burrell’s scheduled appearance to sing “I See a Victory” with Pharrell to promote the new

Marvin Sapp. To add insult to injury, Texas Southern University pulled her radio show, “Bridging the Gap” from the airwaves. Lastly, sources say that Frank Ocean’s mother is requesting that he disassociate himself from her and remove her song from his album as well.

Black Girls CODE Chicago has received corporate sponsorships from Capitol One, Chase Bank, Leap Innovations, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois. BCBS recently donated a workspace with computer based tools, lunch, and volun-

teers for a BGC Chicago weekend event. More than 50 percent of the young women who have attended workshops in Chicago had registrations paid for by the donations to the BGC Chicago website, according to Wingard. Donations cover the costs for food and instructors.

Working in the tech sector as an African American woman can be daunting. Chicago native Jamila Parham, BGC Chicago event/volunteer lead, who works as an IT Project Manager at Chicago Transit Authority, identified a double standard in positions of leadership, especially for women of color. She said being labeled too â&#x20AC;&#x153;bossy,â&#x20AC;? along with more colorful language, as a specific barrier sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s had to overcome.

Parham, who graduated from DePaul University with a bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree in computer graphics/animation and a masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

degree in information project management from Keller Graduate School in Chicago, said she didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have role models in technology to look up to, which is why sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s committed to BGC Chicago. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I believe this is my purpose, to encourage young women of color, whether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s career-wise or even personal growth; to reach back like women before me did,â&#x20AC;? said Parham.

Parham suggested that young women interested in tech related fields should try everything, to learn what they love first, and then pursue it.

Let the Jacksons be Dear Editor: It is really disheartening to pick up the newspaper and see a picture of Sandi Jackson and Jesse Jackson, Jr. on the front page. Of course, the story that accompanied the picture was about the coupleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s divorce. The fact they have split up is no secret, nor is the fact it is turning into a pretty ugly divorce.

Lately, whenever I see these stories I find myself asking why canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the news media just let the Jackson be. Right now, neither are public officials. Neither have held office for more than three years so why canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t they get on with their private lives?

I know and can accept that stuff that at one time they were one of the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most notable political couples, with people in many corners predicting he would one day be President of the United States.

We probably know every detail about the coupleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stupidity and greed in spending his campaign cash on nonsense. We also know that millions of people get divorced every year. So I just donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see the value in reporting on the Jacksonsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; split, especially when the big dispute is over where the case will be heard - D.C. or Chicago. Whenever a decision is made about the location, the news media will dredge up all of the old stories again. Why they canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wait until there is something really new to report is beyond me. The Jackson divorce is not going to have

any impact on Chicago. Nor with it change anything happening in D.C. To write about the divorce repeatedly, in my opinion, amounts to gossip. What we are getting from the Chicago daily newspapers is what we expect from one of the tabloid papers.

There is no reason to report on it other than to gossip, and with all of the news happening in our city, it seems there are many more important things to take up room in the newspaper. The latest batch of â&#x20AC;&#x153;storiesâ&#x20AC;? was loaded with as much innuendo as facts. I guess that is what the news business has stooped to these days.

I know the news business is rarely, if ever, interested in collateral damage, but in this instance that should be taken into account, namely the Jackson children. I would not be surprised to

learn that they are probably taunted relentlessly for what their parents did. That taunting comes from other children no doubt. Regardless of what reporters and editors think of the parents, they should look at the likely discomfort they are causing the Jackson childrenpeople who had nothing to do with the campaign, elected office or the decision to make the dumb purchases. Yet, every story is another poke at their mental wellbeing. They are already dealing with the fact both of their parents have been in prison, and now what they have known as a family is about to implode.

The news media should ask itself if pouring more salt in the Jacksonsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; wounds worth it.

McDonald’s recently announced this year’s list of Illinois nominated seniors – 12 boys and 8 girls – each vying for a chance to play in front of a homestate crowd March 29 at Chicago’s United Center. The final rosters of 24 boys and 24 girls from across the nation will be revealed at 9:30 p.m.
