By La Risa Lynch Seniors Donte Slater, 18, and Calvin Moore, 17, welcomed the news of the increased police presence that Robeson High School will soon get as part of a $30 million initiative Chicago Public Schools rolled out last week to curb youth violence. Slater and Moore brushed off notions that the strong police presence resembles militarization. They said is it about keeping students safe. “It helps keep down the violence,” Moore said. “It helps the kids feel safe,” Slater added, noting that the extra police deters anybody from pulling a weapon. The extra patrols are part of an ambitious

CPS CEO RON HUBERMAN outlined a new youth anti-violence initiative aimed at identifying and connecting at-risk youth with mentors and social service programs to address their social and emotional needs. Huberman announced the new initiative during a press conference at Englewood’s Paul Robeson High School, which received $1 million for the program. Attending the press conference were Aldermen Freddrenna Lyle (6) and LaTasha Thomas (17). Mayor Daley was scheduled to attend, but cancelled all media appearances to be with wife, Maggie, who fell ill and was treated and released from Northwestern Hospital. (Photo by L. Lynch)
More challenges for proposed Wal-Mart store in Chatham By J. Coyden Palmer After yet another failed attempt to reach an agreement in the city council Finance Committee regarding building a Wal-Mart in the Chatham community, Alderman Howard Brookins did not sound optimistic a deal would get done. For nearly five years the 21st Ward leader has been looking to bring a Wal-Mart into his im-
poverished ward. And while Mayor Daley could sign off on any area zoned for a WalMart, like the Chatham Market Place in Brookins’ ward, he has refused to do so, saying he wants the aldermen to come to an agreement on the issue. The constant stalling is wearing on Brookins and his constituents. “My son has been unemployed for nearly a year and he would love any kind of job
right now, said resident Emma Mae Brooks. “He’s 22 years old, doesn’t go to school and can’t work. While I’m not happy about him not being in school, he isn’t a person who is lazy. He just can’t find a job.” Brookins told the Crusader not a week goes by when he is not asked about the Wal-Mart situation by a constituent. He (Continued on page 2)

Noted broadcaster Wesley South dies at 95 A distinct era of Black broadcasting was noted on Saturday, January 9, when Wesley South died at age 95. South, one of the first Black journalism graduates of Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism was noted for his popular talk show during the civil rights era “Hotline,”died in his Hyde Park home. Wesley South was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma on March 23, 1914 to Dr. Elijah and Mayme South. His family moved to Chicago in 1914. He was educated in the Chicago public schools graduating from Englewood High school. He served two years in the United States Army during World War II and upon the end of this service he return to Chicago where he enrolled at Medill. In 1951 he was hired at the Chicago Defender, later that year he joined the editorial staff of Johnson Publishing Company. He worked for Johnson for six years. South in recounting his career to the HistoryMakers in 2000 said that while he was working as columnist and doing public relations work for the NAACP in 1961, he was approached by a local radio executive and asked to host a show. The executive did not have an African American on air and feared being penalized by the Federal Communications Commission. In 1962 Leonard and Phil Chess bought the station and changed the call letters to WVON. South’s “Hotline” was on air for sixteen years. Noted for interviewing many outstanding personalities, South’s perhaps greatest interview was one with Medgar Evers, three days be-
fore he was killed in Mississippi 1963. He also interviewed such other well known people as Jackie Robinson, the baseball great; Presidents Jimmy Carter and John F. Kennedy; musician great Duke Ellington and civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In 1975 South and Pervis Spann formed Midway Broadcasting Corporation, along with other luminaries in the Black community. Spann and a host of popular Blacks had worked for the Chess company including Herb Kent and it was known as a music station, until Wesley’s popular show “Hotline”
Wesley South
was the impetus to make the station all-talk in 1986. Not a unanimous decision by the ownership, but to this day the talk format prevails at WVON. Upon learning of the death of South 1st Congressional District Congressman Bobby L Rush (DIL) said, “Wesley South was a pioneer, a visionary and a broadcasting innovator who understood the need for diverse voices on American radio,” said Rep. Rush. “He will be remembered for not only helping to establish WVON as the première talk radio station in Black America, but also as a journalist,
philanthropist and a man of good character and strong will. He had a giant’s walk—-and he leaves very big shoes to fill. Many of us are indebted to Mr. South for his support throughout the years and for his leadership.” Mr. South is survived by his daughter, retired Appellate Court Justice Leslie South, and grandson Wesley Jackson. His wife, Mildred, preceded him in death. Funeral services are set for Saturday, January 16 at the Church of the Good Shepherd 5700 S. Prairie Avenue at 11:00 a.m. A wake at 10:00 a.m. will precede the funeral.
Bl a c k Am e ri ca mo b i l i zi ng t o h e l p H a it i Black Americans struggled to mobilize to help Haiti citizens as the news of the most devastating earthquake caused yet incomplete numbers of deaths in that country. The earthquake registered 7.0 on the Richter scale on Tuesday, January 11, and aftershocks are reported to be at the 5.9 level. It is believed that the numbers could be as many as 100,000 when rescue efforts end. Medicine and health supplies are being sent through the American Red Cross and President Obama reacted quickly to offer aid to the tiny country. The President said: “My thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been affected by this earthquake. We are closely monitoring the situation and we stand ready to assist the people of Haiti.” According to the President’ office, “The President was informed of the earthquake at 5:52pm. The President asked his staff to make sure that embassy personnel are
safe, and to begin preparations in the event that humanitarian assistance is needed. The Department of State, USAID and the United States Southern Command have begun working to coordinate an assessment and any such assistance.” Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-35) issued the following statement upon learning of the major earthquake in Haiti late Tuesday afternoon: “I am absolutely devastated to learn of the earthquake that struck Haiti late this afternoon. I fear that an earthquake of this magnitude, with its subsequent aftershocks, has dealt a serious blow to the livelihoods and lives of many Haitians and to the important economic, political and social developments that are underway in the country. Haiti is already the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. I have travelled to Haiti many times, and I have seen the poverty and desperation of the Haitian people with my own eyes. There is wide-
spread unemployment and underemployment, and more than twothirds of Haitian workers do not have formal jobs. There is a high risk of infectious diseases, including diarrhea, hepatitis, typhoid fever, dengue fever and malaria. The infant mortality rate is nearly 6 percent, and almost half of the adult population cannot read and write. Many people have worked hard over the years to assist the people of Haiti. I have worked with officials in the U.S. Government and international organizations to bring economic development to Haiti. Meanwhile, dedicated people working with charities and nongovernmental organizations are on the ground in Haiti trying to end poverty and help the Haitian people build a brighter future for themselves and their children. I have also worked very hard over several years to bring debt cancellation to Haiti, which owed over one billion dollars in debts to the World
Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and other multilateral financial institutions. Last June, the World Bank announced that all of these debts would be completely cancelled. Yet for the people of Haiti, every step forward seems to be followed by three steps backward. In August and September of 2008, Haiti was struck by four hurricanes and tropical storms in rapid succession: Fay, Gustav, Hanna, and Ike. The loss of life and the destruction of infrastructure as a result of these storms were devastating. The storms destroyed more than 22,000 houses and damaged an additional 84,000 houses. Almost all of the agricultural land in the country was flooded, causing more than $200 million in damage to the agricultural sector alone and exacerbating hunger throughout the country. The storms also damaged or destroyed roads, bridges and other essential infrastructure.”
More challenges for proposed Wal-Mart store in Chatham (Continued from page 1) said not only do people want to work there, but many want to shop there because of the lack of grocery stores in the area. “People have to go for miles just to get to a grocery store for fresh produce,” he said. “If you have a car it’s not as big a deal. But what if you are a single mother with no car or an elderly person who relies on public transit? Or what if you’re a college student and you need to save pennies? Are we really being fair to our residents?” But not everyone is buying WalMart’s claims of bringing jobs to the community. A recently released study by economic professors at Loyola University and the University of Illinois at Chicago dispute many of the company’s claims. Professor David Merriman is the head of the Economics Department at UIC. He said bringing Wal-Mart into an urban setting might bring some jobs, 2
but the same community will lose one job for every job Wal-Mart brings because the smaller businesses around them cannot compete. He said for the most part bringing Wal-Mart into an area is a “break even” result based on the study The Impact of Urban WalMart Stores on Area Businesses: An Evaluation of one Chicago Neighborhood’s Experienced. The study also disputes the revenue generating claims of Brookins and Wal-Mart. “These estimates support the contention that urban Wal-Mart stores absorb retail sales from other city stores without significantly expanding the market,” the study reports. “Communities around the city should not see Wal-Mart, and other big-box retailers, as a panacea to local economic struggles,” Merriman said. “It won’t fundamentally change the total amount of employment in the

city.” Mayor Daley has been in favor of bringing the world’s largest retailer to Chicago for years. He said during these tough economic times, Wal-Mart is offering something nobody else seems to be willing to do: jobs. He said to hold Wal-Mart to a higher standard than other retailers is not fair and it is only hurting citizens in communities like Chatham where jobs are desperately needed. “Why is it that it’s not enacted in the suburban areas?” said Daley on Jan. 13th, the day after Finance Chairman Alderman Ed Burke tabled a discussion on the measure. “Why are we changing everything in the city, and nothing for the suburban and collar counties. That’s the thing I don’t understand.” Some residents do not object to Wal-Mart coming into their
neighborhood because of the potential to bring jobs, many do not want all of the traffic problems that will come with it. Others say they object to Wal-Mart on ethical reasons, citing how many of their workers are disgruntled with their work environment and their treatment of employees. South Side resident Lynette Williams resigned from WalMart in 2007 after she claims the company falsely accused her of writing bogus checks. Williams worked as a photo manager for Wal-Mart for nearly two years. Williams believes the company made up the charges because she was refusing to accept a company buyout proposed to her and other managers at a suburban Chicago store. “I have not stepped foot in a Wal-Mart store since I turned in my keys and left,” she told the Crusader earlier this week. “I fig-

ure if they think I’m stealing from them, why should I patronize them.” Williams said while the pay was good, she could not work for a company that would put her through those types of changes. She said the cons outweighed the pros and added that for nearly a month she did not get paid while they did an investigation. In the end they offered her a job, but it would have meant she would be demoted from a manager to a cashier. “That offer was a complete insult so I just left.” In the meantime the property for the proposed store in Brookins, ward is facing financial troubles of its own, according to various media reports. The property could go into foreclosure later this month, which would kill any hopes of bringing a WalMart to that site. The Chicago Crusader
NEWS Continuing the Dream:
King College Prep committed to educating students holistically By J. Coyden Palmer For years some people in the African American community complained that Chicago’s Martin Luther King High School was not doing justice to the person for whom it was named. The school consistently had problems with gang activity and low-performing students. Students seemed unmotivated. In short, King was one of the most undesirable destinations for graduating eighth-graders. But in 2000, the Chicago Public Schools put more resources into the Bronzeville community school and changed its curriculum to a more challenging college prep one and this past June, King College Prep graduated its fourth class. One of the city’s select enrollment schools, King College Prep has 920 students. The turnaround of the school has shown immediate results as five graduates from the school’s first four graduating classes have been named Gates Millennium Scholars and are continuing their education at the University of Michigan, the University of Chicago, Oral Roberts University, Stanford University, and Dartmouth College, respectively. But the longest serving faculty member at King disputes the previous assertions that King was a “bad” school. Lonnie Williams has been teaching and coaching at King since its inception in 1964 when it was known as Forestville High School. Williams vehemently challenges anyone who says the

He said King has produced more current principals in the Chicago Public School system than any other school and has a history of producing graduates who go on to achieve great things. He said he still remembers every student who ever came through its doors. “King High School was a productive school even then, even when we were understaffed, and under equipped. We had the valedictorian and president of the student body at Harvard University by the name of Ronald Wade who graduated from here in 1973,” Williams said. “In all fairness to every student who ever went to school here we need to set the record straight, and it was the farthest thing from the truth for them
to say we weren’t productive. People said that just to take light off of what was really happening at the time and that was the gentrifica-
tion of the surrounding neighborhood.” Williams said he has seen every transition King has undergone and vows he will be the last person to leave whenever they get rid of him, he says with a laugh. Last year he had the pleasure of seeing again the first homecoming queen in the school’s history who could not believe he was still there and wept when she saw him. He called it one of the most moving experiences he has had in his life. He said today’s King is a lot better in attracting more motivated students, but he does not say that means one can dispel the students, teachers, and administrators of the past. King’s football coach for the last 30 years, Williams has sent many young Black men to college on football scholarships. Among the players he coached is Hollywood actor Michael Duncan, who has

been nominated for several awards. He was also there during the years of basketball coach Landon “Sonny” Cox, who won three state championships during his career, including the 1990 National Championship team. “We’ve had a great athletic program here and that is a proud part of our history,” Williams said. “Anytime you are number one in anything that is good. King was known for our athletics and just because you were great in athletics that shouldn’t be taken as a putdown or mean you don’t consider academics a priority.” Principal Jeffrey Wright is doing a fantastic job, according to Williams. Wright said he believes like many others that a school bearing the name of Dr. King should have a solid academic reputation. Those who were close to Dr. King agree. Attorney Clarence Jones, who served as counsel for Dr. King, recently visited the school. He praised King students and staff and said they were different than most schools bearing the Civil Rights leader’s name. He said in all of his travels around the country, that he is used to King High School being one of the lowest performing, most segregated schools in a city. “To see a school that had King’s name and the words ‘college prep’ connected to it meant a lot to him,” Wright said. Wright told the Crusader he strongly believes in the mission of (Continued on page 6)
CPS wants to create “Culture of Calm” in troubled schools the city’s most troubled schools. The two-year initiative is funded by $30 million in federal stimulus money. Part of that includes $10 million set aside for requests for proposals (RFPs) to connect 2,000 youth with mentors using faith-and community-based social service agencies. “This is not about assigning extra security,” CPS CEO Ron Huberman said. “This is about a culture shift. We are trying to alter culture in our schools in such a way where we won’t need metal detectors…. We are not there today, but certainly that’s where we want to be.” Dubbed “Culture of Calm,” the initiative takes a three-prong approach to curb violence. The initiative targets youth most susceptible to violence and connects them with mentors and other resources to address their social and emotional needs whether it is academic, familial or behavioral. Also $18 million will be used to The Chicago Crusader
help change troubled schools’ culture by improving student behavior and academic successes. Schools identified for the program will develop a “cultural transformation program” that will focus on staff training, behavior expectations and new discipline guidelines, including an in-school suspension program that use restorative justice programs. “We are going to get away from suspension being something outside of school, and we are going to bring it inside the school where we can directly work with those students,” Huberman said. Additionally, the initiative sets aside $2 million to develop safe passage corridors. Huberman noted that 40 percent of CPS students reported that they do not feel safe during transit to and from school. He noted the police department has identified 43 hot spots that are potential for gang violence and will patrol those ar-
(Continued from page 1) eas along with CPS security. Progress has been made Huberman said, noting a 29 percent dip in the number of CPS students shot. Last year 143 students were shot compared to 102 this school year. Huberman stressed that no students were shot or killed in or around school grounds. “We are just beginning to scale up this operation,” he said. “We feel that a lot of these efforts are beginning to make a difference.” CPS conducted a study to help identify students and schools most susceptible to violence. CPS officials were vague in what criteria was used, but noted factors included disciplinary reports. The study identified 38 schools, which accounted for 80 percent of all CPS shooting victims in the city last year. This year, Huberman noted that 40 percent of students identified by the study were already victims of violence. He noted 50 percent of high-risk students like-

ly to be victims of violence were out-of-school youths. The initiative will reach out to student drop-outs and try to re-engage them in the educational process. Police Superintendent Jody Weis lauded the partnerships among the police, CPS and social service agencies to address the root causes of youth violence. “We are going to give [students] the skills that they need to deal with the life crisis that come up,” he said. The program is already in place at Robeson High School, which received $1 million. The initiative will fund anger management classes that teach students to find alternatives to resolve conflicts. Also staff will be trained in conflict de-escalation techniques and classroom management skills. The school also has a new attendance policy supported by truancy officers. Principal Gerald Morrow calls the program unprecedented. He

said no other major city is investing this kind of money into impoverished neighborhoods to address students’ emotional and social needs. “A lot of schools were emotionally unsafe,” Morrow said, adding that students often come to school angry which impact the learning environment. His staff tries to find out “what is going on with the kids emotionally” and connect them with services to address the issue. The initiative piggybacks on what the school has already implemented, including having an open door policy where students can come to any staff member with their concerns. Helping students, Morrow explained, is about building relationships. “If you take the time to listen to our children, to understand exactly where they are coming from, they will accept you. They will talk to you. They will tell you what is going on,” he said. 3

AN UNWISE KNEEJERK REACTION The unthinkable happened on Christmas Day – a would-be terrorist attempted to blow up Flight 253 which was on route from Amsterdam to Detroit. The attempt was fortunately thwarted, and the perpetrator was subdued and arrested. It turns out that the failed bomber was a 23-year-old wealthy Nigerian whose father is a prominent person in Nigeria. The wanna-be terrorist, Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab, had been on a watch list, and his father had notified authorities that his son had been radicalized. Even though this is the case, he was allowed to board Flight 253 and attempt to detonate a bomb. He ended up only hurting himself, and is being treated for thirddegree burns. Because of Abdulmutallab’s terrorist tactics, there is talk now about targeting all Muslims and all Nigerian travelers. This is truly a knee-jerk reaction. We are thankful that nothing drastic happened on that flight, but we also think that targeting everyone from Nigeria, or from any Middle Eastern country for that matter, will be counter-productive. After all, are we going to say that all mathematicians are Unabomber’s because one was; will we say that all White males with crew cuts are Timothy McVeigh clones? Are we to conclude that every Italian belongs to the Mafia, or that every person named Dahmer is a serial killer? Of course not. This is why it would be absolutely ludicrous to profile every Nigerian because one young, misguided soul decided to dock his ship on the wrong side of his religion. Every Muslim does not aspire to become a member of al-Qaida. The truth of the matter is that religion is a powerful motivator. People hang on to their beliefs because of the promise of a better life. Some zealots, however, use religion for the wrong purposes, and young impressionable jihadist recruits think that it is alright to kill people in the name of Allah. This is clearly misguided – no matter what deity you profess, with the exception of the entity called Satan, human life is sacred. Religion, in its highest sense, should inspire humanity to reach for the highest parts of ourselves. It is the way that we connect with our creator, whomever that is determined to be depending upon the religion. Christians hold up Jesus Christ as the Savior and pathway to God; Buddhists follow the tenets set forth by Gautama Buddha; Jewish people worship Yahweh; Yoruba adherents consult the Orishas, and members of Islam honor the teachings of Muhammad the prophet and worship Allah, just to name a few. All of these teachings have elements in them that can be misunderstood by the immature or used by those infused with guile. This is why the American Founding Fathers sought to establish a society where freedom of worship was the cornerstone. However, if the truth be really told, America is a Christian nation, as evidenced by national holidays like Christmas and Easter, which is why there is such antipathy against adherents of Islam. And we sometimes forget that we helped stir up that bees nest as a result of our imperialistic forays into Islamic turf in search of their mineral treasures. Unfortunately, young Abdulmutallab has probably ruined his life and painted his entire country with a brush that it does not deserve. Reasonable people will resist this tendency. Ultimately, the problems that we face are not about religion, but about the sanctity of human life and the respect of all people. Until we reach this level of consciousness as a species, tragedies associated with terrorism and other forms of violence will continue to rear their ugly heads, and no amount of profiling will prevent it! 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR LIGHTEN UP ON HARRY REID
Dear Editor:
So Harry Reid spoke aloud what is a prevailing view and practice in America. Looking historically back to slavery, the offspring of the master were given the easier work of being the mistress’ house servant. In other words they were referred to as “house slaves” as opposed to “field slaves.” Because they worked inside the home and served the wealthy visiting guests, they learned English, though sometimes it was merely pigeon English. This ability elevated them above the field slaves, thus establishing a hierarchy. The house slaves because of their lighter skin were often sought after by white “aristocracy” and in New Orleans there were balls given where match making was made between the “mulatoos” and the wealthy gentlemen. Paternity was not acknowledged; and despite the mistress seeing the similarity between her children and the children of the house slaves, she kept her mouth shut. Remember women had no rights and were subject to the frailties of their husbands. Because they were well cared for and often did not have to lose
their figures because the Black house maid, often referred to as mammy, was also the wet nurse for the mistress’s babies. The Black house maid often nursed the white baby before she nursed her own. Both women felt a certain sense of privilege, the white mistress because she had no labor to tend to and the Black house maid because she was spared working in the sweltering sun. This was a cozy arrangement that “benefited” all: the white master who had his sexual fantasies and desires satisfied by his Black house maid, the white mistress whose only stress was seeing that she was sharing her husband, and the Black house maid who was able to eat and feed her offspring from the master’s leftovers and to learn some “affected” social graces. As recently as the ‘50’s, the government continued to perpetrate this practice. A very fair-skinned friend of mine was hired by the government to “integrate” a government office where she was considered to be “white.” After tiring of hearing all the disparaging remarks made about Black people, she revealed her ethnicity; and was immediately shunned by the same coworkers who embraced her when they thought she was white. After a “respectable” period of time, Blacks were hired with a little more color in their skin. It progressed until the darkskinned Blacks were finally hired.

BEYOND THE RHETORIC
Has President Obama become the Head Gate Keeper? By Harry Alford NNPA Columnist
In November 2008 the Black component of the Democratic Party was flying sky high. We just elected our first Black president at
Harry C. Alford
lightening speed. It appeared the replacement for his senate seat would go, by default, to another Black leader. We had two Black governors in the key states of Massachusetts (Deval Patrick) and New York (David Patterson). The
environment was beckoning all potential Black leaders to adjust their goals upward and shoot for it all. Black political power was real and it was charging like a big steam roller. Mysteriously, something happened along our way to the year 2010. The Obama Administration has fewer Blacks in key positions than the first administrations of Bush and Clinton. Is this progress? Time will tell but at least the inspiration for campaigning for the top congressional, state and city offices is apparently undeniable. It is undeniable but there appears to be some very strong resistance from the top office in the land. Presidents, who have political capital, share that with aspiring party mates. They endorse, raise money and just by visiting and appearing with the candidates they can propel a rising star to victory. Not only is there reticence but there is apparent push back or discouragement. Has the first Black president become the “HNIC” of the Democratic political gate? Let’s look at some glaring examples. The state of New York is very key to the two party political system. There are significant electoral votes and a large population and
money base that any political party with some common sense would want to court. The state has its first Black governor and he is going to need a lot of support from the Democratic National Committee and a strong push from the pool of other Black political players. However, he is not getting the support or even encouragement from President Obama. In fact, the President has told him to consider stepping out of the race. That’s right. He is asking for him to disappear. It gets worse. Black city councilman Bill Thompson should have won the recent New York City mayoral race. He would have with just some decent interaction by President Obama. A few fundraisers, photo opportunities and strong words of encouragement from the White House probably would have done the trick. Instead, there was practically nothing. The only praise went to his opponent, independent incumbent Mayor Bloomberg. Thompson raised $9 million while Bloomberg spent more than $100 million (much of his own). In the end, Thompson lost by just 4.5 percent. President Obama’s involvement would have made a difference. A close friend of candidate
Thompson sums it up, “The first Black President who tells the first Black governor to get out and he won’t help the guy who wants to be the second Black mayor? The irony is thick.” Yes it is. Congressman Harold Ford recently announced that he will be running for the New York senate seat that was previously held by Hillary Clinton. All hell has broken loose. Here’s a guy who is supposed to be in the Democratic National Committee inner circle and they are throwing everything at him to stop his plans. Shouldn’t they be encouraging them? In addition to the New York City mayoral race, two other major cities had close races. In Atlanta, Kasim Reed barely won. He had to go through a runoff and then a recount but he barely edged out his opponent. Funny, all he needed was a little support from the White House but this Black man barely beat out a white candidate who appealed to the extreme conservative right. In Atlanta, we were lucky. We were not so lucky in Houston. This city which is majority minority had a similar close race. In a runoff, candidate Gene Locke lost to his white opponent. Locke also has strong credentials and just needed strong support coming in
to assist. It never came. Senator Roland Burris should be gearing up for his re-election in Illinois. He holds the seat Obama had but he is being bludgeoned by the powers to be. His fundraising infrastructure has been destroyed and they want him to go away big time. In the end, I feel the Republican Party, which is now amused by this, will take this seat at the next election. Congressman Kendrick Meek is running for the Florida senate seat while Artur Davis has announced his bid for Governor of Alabama. They, too, are meeting resistance from those we would think would embrace their endeavors and fully support them. President Obama, just what is going on? We need to get our act together and support what the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement provided for us. The above activity coupled with the recently exposed racist remarks by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid causes us to wonder: “Have things actually gotten better?” Harry C. SCLC Tarnishes Dr. King’s Image By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist On Tuesday, the day after the nation officially celebrates the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., suspended Southern Christian Leadership Conference Board Chair Raleigh Trammell of Dayton, Ohio and Treasurer Spiver Gordon, a resident of Eutaw, Ala., are scheduled to appear in an Atlanta court to contest their dismissals amid allegations that they directly benefited from a secret $500,000 board account. To the public, SCLC, co-founded by Dr. King, has been on the rise after almost going out of business in 2004. Charles Steele, Jr., one of my childhood friends from Tuscaloosa, Ala., brought the organization back from the brink of extinction as president and CEO, raising $8 million during his tenure from 2004 to 2009. Approximately $3.3 million of that amount was used to build a new SCLC headquarters on historic Auburn Avenue. Even civil rights icon Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth – who once referenced SCLC by saying, “Only God can give life to the dead” – acknowledged the civil rights group had returned from the dead under the
leadership of Steele, now an Atlanta businessman. While the public perception of SCLC was that it had finally rebounded, Trammell was busy getting the board to revise the organization’s bylaws, shifting many of the powers traditionally held by the president to him. Dexter M. Wimbish, the general counsel, was directed to report to Trammell instead of President Steele. Against the counsel of his closest advisers, Steele went along with the power shift, arguing that his personal friendship with Trammell would still allow him to function effectively. That Trammell and Gordon could rise to top board positions should have been an embarrassment within itself. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported on Nov. 10, 2004 that Trammell “went to prison in the 1970s for cheating a county welfare department in Ohio.” Gordon, the SCLC treasurer, lost his city council seat in Alabama after pleading guilty in 1999 to federal vote fraud charges. He admitted that he had asked a person who lived outside of Greene County to fill out an absentee ballot and falsely list a county address. Gordon was sentenced to six months in fed-

In the rough-and-tumble world of SCLC board politics, Trammell and Gordon have survived because they were among the last people standing. Their fall from favor is tied to the unaudited secret account, described by one SCLC insider as “a slush fund.” Approximately $500,000 has flowed through the account over the past three years, including about $200,000 said to have been siphoned off from a prison ministry program operated by Gordon.
Although some SCLC staff members were told that the account, opened in Eutaw, Ala. and supervised by Gordon, was subject to an outside audit, no record of an audit has been uncovered. Also, there is no known record of tax returns ever being filed for the account. Some SCLC board members said they had no knowledge that the secret account existed. Charles Steele raised questions about the account before he resigned a year ago. Steele feared that contributions to SCLC would dry up if the public ever learned about the secret fund. Once Attorney Wimbish and Executive Director Ron Woods learned that there were no independent controls on the board account and suspected that some SCLC funds may have been embezzled, they felt a responsibility to share their concerns with Interim President Byron C. Clay. On October 29, the board, which had recently elected a half dozen new members, was made aware of the special fund. On November 13, Trammell and Gordon were removed from their board positions, with the new members casting the critical votes against them. Even before the vote, efforts were made to get Trammell to quietly step aside. A longtime former assisSaturday, January 16, 2010
tant, based in Dayton, filed a sexual harassment complaint against him with a state human rights agency. Persons familiar with the complaint say the assistant claims to have sexually-explicit videotapes of Trammell, a married minister. She is also said to be ready to make additional allegations that, if true, could lead to his returning to prison. Rather than stepping aside, a request for an injunction was filed December 29 in Atlanta seeking to restore Trammell and Gordon to their former positions. The board infighting continues as Bernice King, the youngest daughter of the late civil rights leader, prepares to take over as the first female president of SCLC. Her oldest brother, Martin Luther King III, served as president from 1997 to 2004, but left after a bitter dispute with the board. According to several people who serve on the board or staff of SCLC, Trammell said that under his leadership, no woman or another member of the King family would serve as president of the organization. However, the selfstyled master politician made a major miscalculation. As a condition for accepting the (Continued on page 19) 5

It is quite clear that African people in America continue to be miseducated. This problem is discussed in a variety of ways in conversations everyday in our communities throughout America. From time to time we should consult the wisdom of those who have addressed this problem whom we may have forgotten. One such person who addressed this problem is the Honorable
Dr. Conrad Worrill Marcus Mosiah Garvey, when he presented his formula for learning in his courses on African Philosophy in the 1930s. I think it is only appropriate to review Mr. Garvey’s formula for learning as we continue to build the Reparations Movement and seek specific guideposts to our development as a people. These lessons and guideposts in learning can be found in Marcus Garvey, Message to the People, The Course of African Philosophy, edited by Dr. Tony Martin. Lesson 1: One must never stop reading. Read everything that you can read, that is of standard knowledge. Don’t waste time reading trashy literature. The idea is that personal experience is not enough for a human to get all the useful knowledge of life, because the individual life its too short, so 6
we must feed on the experience of others. Lesson 2: Read history incessantly until you master it. This means your own national history, the history of the world, social history, industrial history, and the history of the different sciences; but primarily, the history of man. If you do not know what went on before you came here and what is happening at the time you live, but away from you, you will not know the world and will be ignorant of the world and mankind. Lesson 3: To be able to read intelligently, you must first be able to master the language of your country. To do this, you must be well acquainted with its grammar and the science of it. People judge you by your writing and your speech. If you write badly and incorrectly they become prejudiced towards your intelligence, and if you speak badly and incorrectly, those who hear you become disgusted and will not pay much attention to you, but in their hearts laugh after you. Lesson 4: A leader who is to teach men and present any fact of truth to man must first be taught in his subject. Lesson 5: Never write or speak on a subject you know nothing about, for there is always somebody who knows that particular subject to laugh at you or to ask you embarrassing questions that may make others laugh at you. Lesson 6: You should read four hours a day. The best time to read is in the evening after you have retired from your work and after you have rested and before sleeping hours, but do so before morning, so that during your sleeping hours what you read may become subconscious, that is to say, planted in your memory. Lesson 7: Never keep the constant company of anybody who doesn’t know as much as you or (is) as educated as you, and from whom you cannot learn something from or reciprocate your learning. Lesson 8: Continue always in the application of the things you desire educationally, culturally, or otherwise, and never give up until you reach your objective. Lesson 9: Try never to repeat yourself in any one discourse in saying the same thing over and over again except when you are making new points, because repetition is tiresome and it annoys

I write to you now about things that happened in Chicago. I knew something was afoot when my boss introduced me to two FBI agents near where I worked. They seemed friendly. I was not able to understand why they were there, nevertheless I was cordial. Years later it all came apart when the neighborhood was ablaze on December 4, 1969. Everywhere around the housing development were heard gunshots. Gunshots from guns handled by those paid to serve and protect. It was a raid upon an encampment of what was thought to be unlawful actions by those who were in their lawful abode. All of them who were suppose to be inside would have possibly suffered the same fatal demise of those who were found lifeless once the smoke had cleared. Subsequently only one law-abiding citizen, who was part of a group of men who had sworn that if law-enforcement tried to stop those who were partaking of the fruits of the God-given and constitutional right of freedom to bear arms, was present. The rest is history other than the fact that I was privy to the scene by way of weapons discharged against a single Panther who was sleep on a cot and was killed by the raiding party against the Panther. They basically were killed by proxy of one member. Guess what this small article was to let any one who might be a victim of unconstitutional rights
those who hear the repetition. Lesson 10: Knowledge is power. When you know a thing and can hold your ground on that thing and win over your opponents on that thing, those who hear you learn to have confidence in you and will trust your ability. Le sson 11: In reading books written by white authors, of whatever kind, be aware of the fact that they are not written for your particular benefit of your race. They always write from their own point of view and only in the interest of their own race. Garvey had many other lessons of learning, in his formula that journalistic constraints will not allow me to elaborate at this time. However, I encourage you to read Marcus Garvey, Message to the People, The Course of African Philosophy, and as we celebrate begin to internalize and incorporate these “Lessons In Learning.”
and free speech and the right to bear arms. The truth is that I was another aspect of this. I happened to be in the very courtroom with the man who made history and some of this raiding part from that infamous night. One of the other persons that was engaged with the nine-shot killing (of the 99 to 82 shots shot into the location killing Fred Hampton and Mark Clark). Hampton and Clark were killed for their verbal militancy and vows. It was the press that showed the truth of the number of shots that traversed through the apartment. I will never forget what happened and why they died. This is to let you know that killer Edward V. Harahan, died in 2009 and that his death was confirmed by Peterson Funeral Home in Chicago. There were others who were part of this American fiasco. A Chicago police officer named James P. Davis (known as “Gloves” on the streets) was akin to those men who called themselves lawmen. By the way, at the time of their
Maurice A. Clayton 19-page indictment I just happened to be a Cook County Deputy who was in the courtroom prior to the court call. I walked over to the police officer and told him “I hope they hang you!” God bless them all. “May you r est in peace Edward.”

Currently King College Prep has one of the best marching bands in the country. They (band members) routinely compete in state and national contests under the direction of Benji Washington. “Some of the words we use around here are scholar-athletes and scholar-artists,” Wright said. “The second part of those words is incredibly important because they give a person a great sense of balance. It also teaches a person the self-discipline that is needed to be successful in the classroom. I think our marching band is a good example of this because the focus required being in a drumline, that discipline helps a person be a better math or engineering student. The routine practices they must go through as a member of the dance team or marching band prepares their body and their brain, therefore making them better prepared for college.” Wright said King College Prep students also do various community activities throughout the year in

keeping with Dr. King’s philosophy of citizenship. He said his students regularly visit residents at the Avenue Care Center, a senior citizens home across the street from the school. They record the stories being told by the seniors as they participate in a program called “Memory Bridge” that teaches them about the early stages of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The students form a relationship with the resident that benefits the student and the person to help bring back some of their memories by telling their stories to a young person. Several female students also visit area elementary schools and serve as mentors for the students there. The school also hosts a variety of community events throughout the year such as blood drives and community meetings. Wright said he feels it is important for the school not to be seen as an island, but rather a part of the community it serves. Wright and Williams believe King College Prep has a bright future and are committed to seeing it continue to honor the legacy of Dr. King’s life and values. The Chicago Crusader

With a PBS series soundtrack already to its credit and a sophomore recording in the works, The Henhouse Prowlers have been barnstorming on the red hot bluegrass scene since 2004. In 2007, the roughly thirty-something quintet made the commitment to go the distance, to be a full-time touring bluegrass band. But not just another bluegrass band. The Henhouse Prowlers are adeptly positioning themselves for nothing less than success. Dedicated equally to tradition and innovation, The Henhouse Prowlers center their sound on that of the early, formative years of bluegrass, while they keep their pulse on today by covering contemporary topics in a largely original repertoire. The Prowlers wear the Bill Monroe mantle with spit and polish. They perform — and conduct media interviews — in suit-and-tie and work in a tightly choreographed, one-mic stage setting, which adds a dynamic dimension to their shows. Combining passion, confidence and flair with instrumental and vocal prowess, The Prowlers deliver bluegrass with an edge. The group’s prolific songwriting provides entrée to twenty-first century topics not typically tackled by traditional bluegrass groups. Yes, you can save on auto insurance premiums. But you need to know how those premiums are determined. A lot has to do with your age, where you live and work, and your driving record. *** Insurers consider the car, too. Premiums reflect the cost of the car, the number of claims filed by other drivers of this car, and the cost of those claims. (A pricey sports car will cost more to insure; family cars that cost less to repair cost less to insure.)
*** A key issue is your own driving history; tickets for moving violations or accidents deemed your fault can raise premiums by 30 to 50 percent. A DUI conviction can get you dropped. *** One way to trim your costs is to trim your coverage-not by lowering policy limits but by raising the deductible. Consider dropping collision and comprehensive on an older car. *** And take advantage of every discount you can, from those for good-student or driver improvement courses to antitheft devices.

BUSINESS
2010: A Time for Economic Justice By Charlene Crowell NNPA Financial Writer As news reports continue to update foreclosure trends across the country, another looming development has the potential to change the mortgage industry in significant and permanent ways. A lawsuit filed in federal court on December 31 by the City of Memphis and Shelby County in Tennessee became the latest legal challenge to how mortgage loans are offered in communities of color. Alleging “unlawful, irresponsible, unfair, deceptive and discriminatory mortgage lending in Memphis and Shelby County the lawsuit points an accusatory finger at one of the nation’s largest banks, Wells Fargo. The two governmental jurisdictions have each agreed to provide $125,000 to bear the cost of the litigation and potential expert witnesses. Representing the plaintiffs will be the DC-based law firm of Relman & Dane, the same firm hired by the City of Baltimore in its suit against Wells Fargo. Reportedly, Wells Fargo origi-
nated approximately 25 percent of all foreclosures filed in Shelby County in 2009. Additionally, one of every eight Wells Fargo mortgage loans made to Black homeowners in Shelby County resulted in foreclosure. By comparison, only one in 59 mortgage loans resulted for white homeowners in the same locale. Shelby County foreclosures also account for 40 percent of all foreclosures in the State of Tennessee. As in the case of Baltimore, officials contend that many of the Black homeowners qualified for primerate loans that would have been more affordable and sustainable. Although on January 5 U.S. District Court Judge J. Frederick Motz dismissed the Baltimore case as too broad, the court left open the opportunity for the case to be re-filed with a more narrow scope that addressed the specific harm caused by the failed mortgages. Baltimore originally alleged in January 2008 that the lender was responsible for much of the city’s economic decline. According to a recent interview, John Relman, one of the lawyers representing the city and county
Charlene Crowell said, “Wells knew how to write and get people into low-cost loans. You just don’t see much of that in the Black community. Reverse redlining is the term used to identify the marketing of highcost loans to Black customers. This kind of lending was also the charge waged by Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, whose office alleged this same practice has been occurring in Latino communities as well. For both city and county governments in Tennessee, the loss of substantial property tax revenues drained from foreclosed homes
and their neighbors will soon translate into the delivery of fewer vital services. In Memphis, 70 percent of its civil city revenues are derived from property taxes; for Shelby County, property taxes account for 40 percent of its budget. As the judicial process unfolds, local governmental officials will face a resulting and serious dilemma, that of fiscal solvency. It is unrealistic in the face of continued, long-term unemployment on one hand, and mounting foreclosures on the other, that local governments anywhere will be able to deliver all of the range of services that citizens expect and reply upon. Baltimore and Memphis will not be the only areas to face this critical issue. The same will be true for every city or county where large numbers of foreclosures threaten the vitality and livability quotient of communities. Perhaps it is time for more in our community to work in concert, forging challenges to the practices that devastate the places we call home. The National Black Caucus of Local Elected Offi-
cials, the National Conference of Black Mayors, the National Black Caucus of State Legislators — are all organizations whose members have been entrusted with leadership roles. Perhaps in 2010 these recent developments will encourage more officials in leadership posts to actively join efforts to measurably benefit communities of color everywhere. As state legislators return to respective capitols, now would be the time to urge their personal support of mortgage reforms. Local advocates in several areas are expected to push for state reforms. As a people, we fought and won the battle for civil rights. But we have yet to know or enjoy the benefits of economic justice. Social equity is one thing; economic parity is quite another. People of color need both. In 2010, will we claim economic justice for all? Charlene Crowell is the Center for Responsible Lending’s Communications Manager for State Policy and Outreach. Jesse Jackson Sr. Brianna Barber, a student at Bennett College for Women, is among the students being honored in this academic year in the college’s Excel Scholar program. Barber is from Chicago. Bennett students received $150,000 in scholarships under the program, which is funded by the PUSH Excel program of the Chicago-based Rainbow PUSH Coalition. The scholarships are especially needed in today’s economic climate, said Bennett president Julianne Malveaux, who has worked to get assistance in an era in which college costs are rising more than available aid. “These days, scholarships are not easy for students to find,” Dr. Malveaux said. “Too many students are leaving college burdened with an excessive amount of loans – and the loans are more burdensome than they have to be because of high interest rates.” Malveaux said she is especially grateful to Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr., founder and president of Rainbow PUSH. She noted that Rev. Jackson has been working to ad-

Jackson is putting his money where his mouth is,” she said. Rev. Jackson’s organization donates about $500,000 a year to student scholars and this year students from Bennett were the largest recipients of that funding. Rev. Jackson explained Rainbow PUSH’s motivation for offering the scholarships: “In an effort to invest in our most precious commodity, our children, PUSH Excel awards over 200 scholarships worth over a half million dollars to deserving students across the country.” Brianna is a sophomore majoring in Journalism with a GPA of 3.89. After graduation Brianna plans to get her PhD in Women’s Studies, become a writer for Essence magazine, and have her own magazine for young AfricanAmerican women. Brianna added, “I am very grateful to have received the Jesse Jackson scholarship. Without this scholarship, I would not be

They must submit an essay of at least 500 words that discusses their commitment to advocacy. The scholarships are renewable for students who maintain the 2.5 GPA and who make sufficient academic progress toward graduation. Students will have to submit a 500-word essay each year outlining their academic progress and their civic involvement.

Known in her neighborhood as the aunt of “Englewood angel” Seritha White, she has become a surrogate mother to the children of West Englewood who are looking for a trusted friend and seeking safety and growth. “Allstate salutes Woods for following Martin Luther King, Jr’s., vision and serving as a role model to her peers in the African-American community,” said Shaundra Turner, Corporate Relations Manager for the Midwest Region of Allstate Insurance. “We are excited to once again encourage

Girls on the Wall Girls on the Wall is a fascinating documentary about a group of girls who are being detained at the Illinois Youth Center in Warrenville, Illinois. The girls are encouraged to release their innermost feelings through art, as they all participate in therapy sessions and write a play about their lives. This informative, award-winning documentary will air on your local PBS station Thursday, Jan. 21, at 10 p.m. The story follows a group of incarcerated teenage girls who get a shot at redemption by staging a musical, which takes them nine months to write and stage, after which they invite family and friends to view. During those months, many things happen to the girls, but they triumph in many ways. It’s sad to see that the girls are housed together, no matter what their violation—so a murderer could be sleeping right alongside a runaway. Two standouts in the film are Whitney, who is very quiet about the conditions which led her to be incarcerated. She speaks of her father, but they both admit that Whitney was basically on her own growing up. However, it was

THE LOVELY BONES A Review by Bonnie DeShong Fourteen-year-old Susie Salmon lives in a wonderful, safe community with her mother Abigail (Rachel Weisz), father Jack (Mark Wahlberg), sister Lindsey (Rose McIver), and brother Buckley (Christian Ashdale). Susie has a passion for photography and a crush on a new boy at school. All is right in the world. What neither Susie nor anyone knows in the community, is that there is a predator in their own backyard. It is not a spoiler moment to tell you that Susie is raped and killed by a serial killer. The story actually begins after she dies. From the space between heaven and earth called the “in between,” Susie helps bring attention to the man who killed not only her but other girls and women that are with her in the “in between.” On earth her father is going mad trying to find her killer, her mother leaves the family to go work picking fruit on farms; her cigarette smoking, kind of wacky grandmother, Susan Sarandan, comes to help hold the family together, and Susie’s sister focuses in the on

(Continued from page 4) hiring criteria, color was. When I went to teach in Washington, D C in 1956, every teacher over 40 years old was very fair-skinned. The Village where I live has a Black mayor of mixed race who was openly embraced by the community because he looks more like them than he does like us. This is old news for most people of African descent. Also we are aware of the fact that because of the privileges accorded fairskinned people; they, the fair-skin people tried to keep their “blood pure” by marrying people who were also fair-skinned. This foolish practice went to the extreme in some families where at funerals and social gatherings the dark-skinned members were seated on one side of the room and the fair-skinned ones on the other side. This is America’s shame. Not only do we have continued racism in this country, class distinction and separation; but, we also have people of African descent who feel privileged because their skin is not dark. This ignorance is what has been the bane of America for centuries. Many brilliant people who could have caused America to advance faster and further were denied the opportunity to make a contribution because of their color. No one should be offended by Senator Harry Reid’s remarks; I am not because I know American history. Many white Americans are embarrassed because it has brought out of the closet what has historically been a prevailing practice in America ever since the Emancipation Proclamation. Despite all of the Acts enacted to assure equality, American society is still divided and unequal. Electing a Black president will not bring an end to a deep seeded, deep rooted problem in the American psyche. What we need in America is a Secretary of Psychiatry to help us rid ourselves of old prejudices, to help us value people by their talents and abilities to advance our society and to heal and resolve the internal conflict pervasive throughout this country. America is still racist and sick. When we are healed, there is no stopping us. For now, we are in grave danger of being surpassed by China. The Chicago Crusader

Volunteers needed for SMP Dear Editor: Recent national news articles have described some of the ways that seniors are scammed and how many are now volunteering to help their peers avoid becoming victims. It’s all part of a program called Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) that relies on more than 4,700 volunteers across the country. Together, these wonderful individuals protect older people and fight health care fraud, leaving more money in the system for everyone. Here in Illinois we have 29 volunteers who assisted us in educating more than 19,000 Medicare beneficiaries last year about how to avoid becoming victims of health care fraud. We also intervened on behalf of many Medicare beneficiaries with complicated problems, including fraud and identity theft, related to their Medicare benefits. We at the Illinois SMP need your help. If you’d like to become a volunteer, contact us at AgeOptions at (800)699-9043. The musical explores common issues of drug-addicted parents, poverty and neglect. But the real victors in the end are the girls who are able to grasp their problems and discuss them in productive, healing ways. Girls on the Wall shows a musical that is full of humor, also. “To make a straight, serious prison documentary about these girls wouldn’t be true to who they are,” says director Heather Ross. “The girls in Warrenville are wickedly funny and bright, and the musical allows those qualities to bubble up.” The documentary features the girls’ raw and original freestyle raps as an alternative to narration, in contrast with the more vulnerable lyrics of their musical. SPORTS MLK Dream Classic honors life of Dr. King through basketball By J. Coyden Palmer Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had a profound affect on the world in life and continues in death. Even in arenas that many people do not realize. For the past eight years Marshall High School girls’ basketball coach Dorothy Gaters has hosted a tournament in Dr. King’s honor. This year will be the biggest in its history with boys’ and girls’ teams from around the nation competing over the course of the three-day Martin Luther King Holiday weekend. Coach Gaters has the distinction of being the winningest basketball coach in the state of Illinois with over 900 career victories. She has also won eight State Championships to go along with more than twenty state fin-
come involved to the point where this year there will be over 60 teams participating. She said even with using two courts at a time, she still had to turn some schools away this year. Over the years, Gaters has secured some corporate sponsors for the event, which means the teams don’t have to pay an entry fee. She also says because they don’t match teams with one of their rival schools to play during the tournament, it provides a more relaxed atmosphere where the kids can just play and not worry so much about the pressure of winning. Through her years as a coach, Gaters has gotten to meet several prominent individuals who too agree with her work. She was once honored at the White House by President Bill Clinton and served as a consultant to

Still working with the youth in our community, Gaters said today’s youth need to not only know, but believe in what Dr. King’s legacy was as we still face some of those same social ills. “I wanted to start something where we could constantly remind our athletes of the sacrifices that were made by so many people on their behalf,” Gaters told the Crusader earlier this week. “Many of the schools they (the students) being recruited by, during the Civil Rights era, they wouldn’t recruit our students. Our kids went to Lincoln University and Alabama State. So I want them to realize that people made a lot of sacrifices for some of the things they may take for granted.” When the MLK Dream Classic first started, there were only 10 girl’s teams. But each year, Gaters said more schools wanted to beThe Chicago Crusader

Many of the people she befriended have become a part of her team in producing the MLK Dream Classic. “Many people think of Dorothy Gaters as an outstanding athlete and coach, indeed she is the best among the best,” said Congressman Danny Davis, a co-sponsor and longtime supporter of Gaters and the showcase. “Helping her with the MLK Dream Classic has given me the opportunity to see first hand what a great philosopher and teacher that she is. I encourage every family to come out and participate in this event. It is a great way to teach our young people about the values associated with Dr. King through sport.” Gaters said she emphasizes to coaches and players to recommit themselves to the values Dr. King often spoke of. Besides the student-athletes and coaches, Gaters believes all of us can learn from
