CHICAGO PHYSICIAN Robert Satcher performed two space walks and conducted repairs on the International Space Station last month. Dr. Robert Satcher, the dream became a reality earlier this year. Satcher, an orthopedic surgeon at Northwestern Memorial
Hospital, was a part of the space crew of the STS-129 mission. Fresh from his return, Satcher spoke with members of the Church of St. Edmund on the South Side earlier this week. He said his journey was indeed special and he encouraged young people to follow their dreams and work hard to achieve the things they want in life. “To say that this was a fantastic and remarkable journey does not do justice to the breadth, diversity and depth of emotions and thoughts that were provoked in me by the experience,” Satcher said. A native of Hampton, VA., Satcher received a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1986; a doctor of philosophy in chemical engineering from MIT in 1993; and a doctorate of medicine degree from Harvard Medical School in 1994. Married with two kids, Satcher completed 12 Research Grants from 1991-2004 and most recently served as an Assistant Professor at The Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University, in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Satcher also held an appointment as an Attending Physician in Orthopedic Surgery at Children’s Memorial Hospital, specializing in Musculoskeletal
Oncology. Satcher admitted his adrenaline and nerves were going haywire as he lay on his back waiting for launch in what will be one of the final missions of the Space Shuttle.
“It’s acceleration like you’ve never felt before and it’s sustained for about eight and a half minutes. So it’s absolutely fantastic.” Selected by NASA in May 2004, Satcher (Continued on page 3)

Stroger skips out of Black media roundtable the only municipality that operates without a deficit and without any furlough days.
By La Risa Lynch Cook County Board President Todd Stroger was a no show at his own Black media roundtable forum held last Monday at his South Loop campaign office. Stroger, according to campaign staff, was called to a last minute meeting regarding funding for the county’s health care system. Instead campaign manager Vince Williams addressed the sparse gathering of reporters who attended the 40-minute meeting. Williams took jabs at the general media for its bias against Stroger. Williams explained the campaign has struggled to get its message out against a barrage of negative press generated by the city’s two main dailies. Overlooked, Williams contends, is that Stroger heads

NEWS Black Caucus to press for public option in final health care bill By Hazel Trice Edney NNPA Editor-in-Chief As U. S. Senators and members of the House of Representatives prepare to negotiate to combine the two distinctly different health care bills, members of the Congressional Black Caucus are vowing once again to push for a public option to make the final bill affordable for their largely AfricanAmerican and low income constituencies.
Barbara Lee In a joint statement released just before the Senate’s long-awaited Christmas Eve passage of the bill, progressive leaders CBC Chair Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) and Congressional Progressive Caucus Cochair Lynn Woolsey (D-Calif.), said, “If the bill requires people to buy health insurance, there must be a public option to bring down costs by providing lower-cost competition to private insurers and choice to consumers.” This assertion implies possibly acrimonious debate before the final version goes back before both houses for final passage and ultimately to the White House for signing by President Obama. The public option barely squeaked by when the House passed the bill by five votes the first time 220-215 November 7. The Senate left the public option out of the bill because it was a deal-breaker for conservative Democrats. The bill passed 60-39, disabling a filibuster by Republicans with the 60 votes or threefifths of the Senate. Fifty-eight senators were joined by two Independents. President Obama – enroute to achieving a key campaign promise - has said the public option is not absolutely necessary as long as the health bill has other key components that could serve the same end to provide affordability for low income or no income people, such as Medicaid. Components that Lee and Woolsey say the bill must have in order to meet their concerns are: • Affordability protections: Meaning, the “legislation must protect 2
lower and middle-income individuals by ensuring that subsidies make coverage affordable and that Medicaid patients have access to primary care physicians.” • Tighter market regulation: Meaning, “New regulations must keep premiums reasonable and end abusive practices. Insurance companies should no longer be exempt from anti-trust laws and any premium increases must be reviewed before they take effect.” • Employer mandates: Meaning, “If individuals are required to buy insurance, employers should be required to provide it.” • Tax surcharges: Meaning, “Health care reform should be financed by tax surcharges on the wealthy not excise taxes on health insurance plans offered to many workers and union members.” The painstaking fight for maximum health care affordability is clearly not over although progress has been made “While we still have much work to do, we applaud Majority Leader Harry Reid and Sens. Ben Cardin and Roland Burris for their hard work to ensure that the much needed health disparities provision remained in the legislation,” the Lee-Woolsey statement said. “Also, we applaud Sen. Bernie Sanders for helping to secure $10 billion more in the revised bill for community health centers. “Meanwhile, the passage was applauded by the Rev. Jesse Jackson, who also asserted that the public option is still a need. “Forty-five million families [are] without health insurance as we approach the year 2010, some 10 million of them children. For too long, America’s record on health care has been a moral disgrace. By voting for health care today, the Congress is taking steps to reverse this trend,” he said in a statement. But, Jackson described the victory as having come “with some heavy scars.” He explains, “Without a single payer system or some form of public option, the Senate bill relies too much on the good will of the insurance industries, health care providers, pharmaceutical companies to hold premiums and costs down and make quality health care truly more affordable and accessible. That is unlikely, given the army of lobbyists these forces have deployed to safeguard their private interests, and undermine and scuttle health care reform.” The Democrats’ determination to get the bill to the President for signage, the Republicans’ determination to kill it, and the CBC’s determination to include a public option will make for hot debate with much at stake when both Houses return to sessions in January.
Saturday, January 2, 2010
Despite objections from the CBC and the Progress Caucus, Democratic leaders are willing to sacrifice the public option in order to at least pass a palatable health care bill. House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn, the highest level AfricanAmerican in Congressional leadership, commended Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and his Democratic colleagues in the Senate for
passage without mentioning the public option. In his roll as Whip - to move the legislation toward passage – Clyburn pointed to the positives of both bills. “Both House and Senate bills cut the deficit, bring down rapidly rising health care costs for families and businesses, provide choice, and end discriminatory practices
of the insurance industry that deny coverage if you get sick or have a pre-existing condition,” he said. “I look forward to working with my Senate colleagues and the President on a final bill that meets the core principles of health reform: affordability for the middle class, security for our seniors, responsibility to our children by reducing the deficit, and accountability for the insurance industry.”

Civil Rights Icon Percy Sutton Dies at 89 Special to the NNPA from the Afro American Newspapers Percy Sutton, best known outside New York for his involvement in the civil rights movement and founding a communications empire, died on December 26. He was 89. Sutton was born in San Antonio, Texas, the youngest of 15 children of a former slave and his wife. According to the New York Times, Sutton received education at three historically Black colleges or universities including Prairie View A&M in Texas, Tuskegee University in Alabama, and Hampton University in Virginia, but did not complete a degree at any of those schools. He served with the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II. Although he did not have an undergraduate degree, Sutton was admitted to Columbia Law School through the G.I. Bill and on the merit of his solid undergraduate performances. Because he had to work while attending school, he transferred to Brooklyn Law School. He was in class all day, and worked through the night at the post office and as a subway train conductor, the New York Times reported. He went for three years,
Percy Sutton with little sleep, to finish school and become a lawyer. After a stint with Air Force intelligence during the Korean War, according to the Associated Press, Sutton returned to New York to work as a lawyer. Sutton’s involvement with the civil rights movement included a family involvement with the NAACP that earned him a police beating at age 15. As an attorney, he became an advocate for the cause and longtime attorney for Malcolm X and his family. The New York Times notes Sutton was arrested for civil disobedience while protesting the police shooting of the unarmed Amadou Diallo in New York in 1999. Sutton was also a politician, and

served as Manhattan borough president from 1966 to 1977 and a state assemblyman for one term starting in 1964. According to the New York Times, Sutton was instrumental in securing funding for the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem and worked to establish open admissions for the City University of New York. He was also the first serious Black candidate for mayor of New York City. “Percy Sutton was a true hero to African Americans in New York City and around the country,” President Obama said in a statement. “His life-long dedication to the fight for civil rights and his career as an entrepreneur and public servant made the rise of countless young African Americans possible.” Sutton’s business ventures centered around communications and media, and at one point included an interest in the Amsterdam News. He also owned radio stations in 18 cities across the United States, cable television systems and some national television programs. He was married three times, twice to Leatrice O’Farrell Sutton, his surviving spouse. He is also survived by a son, Pierre Sutton, and a daughter from his second marriage, Cheryl Lynn Sutton. Family of Nigerian bomb suspect pens open letter expressing shock and prayers Special to the NNPA from GIN (GIN) - The family of a young Nigerian traveller who allegedly attempted to detonate a powerful explosive while travelling to Detroit from Amsterdam, has issued a statement that provides more details of the alleged conversion of their son to extremist beliefs. The statement was prepared by the suspect’s father, Dr. Alhaji Umaru AbdulMutallab, a banker and a member of Nigeria’s powerful ruling elite. He had been identified early in the course of the near-disaster by a Nigerian website. According to the story as it first appeared on SaharaReporters.com, an anti-corruption website produced by Nigerians, Dr. AbdulMutallab said he had warned U.S. embassy officials of his son’s possible links to an al Qaeda organization that grew out of a visit to Yemen and his studies in London. Although his son, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, was added to the terrorist watch list, he was not denied boarding privileges on the Amsterdam-Detroit Northwest Air flight. He reportedly paid cash for a one-way ticket and was allowed to board. But shortly before arrival, Umar Farouk attempted to ignite a fire which would have set off explosives he was carrying in his underwear. It is believed these explosives were strong enough to blow a hole in the plane’s fuselage. At the sound and smoke from the fire being ignited, Umar Farouk was wrestled down by passengers and attendants who successfully doused the flame. The first official response by the
some foreign security agencies about a month and a half ago, then sought their assistance to find and return him home. “We provided them with all the information required of us to enable them do this. We were hopeful that they would find and return him home. It was while we were waiting for the outcome of their investigation that we arose to the shocking news of that day.” The disappearance and cessation of communication which got his mother and father concerned to report to the security agencies are completely out of character and a very recent development, as before then, from very early childhood, Farouk, to the best of parental monitoring, had never shown any attitude, conduct or

Analysts remain sceptical about any link between Nigerian radical Muslims and global jihadists.
Today Dr. AbdulMutallab released the following letter: “Our family, like the rest of the world, were woken up in the early hours of Saturday, 26th December, 2009 to the news of an attempt to blow up a plane by a young Nigerian man, who was later identified as Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab. Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab is the son of Alhaji (Dr.) Umaru AbdulMutallab, the head of this family. “Prior to this incident, his father, having become concerned about his disappearance and stoppage of communication while schooling abroad, reported the matter to the Nigerian security agencies about two months ago, and to

He added that nobody lives their life without having to deal with obstacles, tragedy and disappointments, but they can all be overcome with perserverence. “We have to not be afraid to do what we really want to do,” he said. This mission was historic as it was the first time two African American men were on the shuttle on the same mission. Astronaut Leeland Melvin served as the pilot, another first in NASA history. Satcher believes it is important for younger African Americans, especially males, to see two Black men headed into space together with one driving, he said with a laugh.

UNREASONABLY GREAT EXPECTATIONS
HAPPY NEW YEAR! 2010 is here and, interestingly, corresponds with the first year anniversary of the inauguration of America’s first African American president, Barack Obama. He was sworn into office on January 20, 2009, one short year ago. African Americans and others who believed in the Obama platform were jubilant with hope and high expectations. Too high. Today, various and sundry persons are criticizing Obama for what he has not done. Some of the criticism is valid. For example, he has failed to give adequate attention to the plight of African Americans stating that he is the “president of all of the people and not just African Americans.” Truth be told, it took a coalition across the color spectrum to put him in office, and because of this, he is obligated, so to speak, to dance to the tune of many masters. Politics is the art of compromise, and the best ones are able to maneuver in such a way that most people are satisfied, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time. Charity does, however, begin at home, and Obama should recognize this fact and not take Black people for granted. It is certain that some of the criticism facing Obama has its origins in the notion that an African American should not be president of the United States; should not occupy the most powerful seat on the planet. Though it is publicly unspoken, there are those who still believe that Black people are not as intelligent as others, which may be the reason that he has been critiqued more highly than his predecessor, George W. Bush, who left us with a tanking economy and years of unabated imperialistic warfare. Basically, Bush left America in a shambles and Obama is the clean-up man. The healthcare debate alone, demonstrates Obama’s resolve to make a significant difference in the lives of Americans. His struggles with this issue, along with the climate change debacle in Copenhagen, calls up the specter of “Council Wars” faced by the late, great former Mayor of Chicago, Harold Washington. Looking at this situation, Obama is, indeed, paying “Black Taxes,” i.e., penalties for being Black, when it comes to his perceived performance. He has received more death threats than any other American president in history! An article by Robert Watson, Ph.D., Coordinator of American Studies at Lynn University, in response to criticism that Obama has done nothing, has published an impressive list of 90 Obama administration accomplishments! An objective perusal of this list is proof positive that Obama has made progress in the right direction during his first year in office. As we look forward to the New Year, let’s remember that it takes all of us to make a democracy work. The task does not just lie with one person. We must make sure that President Obama responds to the needs of Americans, but we must also remember to have realistic expectations – he is not the Christ or the Anti-Christ – he is America’s first African American president trying to make a difference. Let’s help him. With this said, please have a safe and prosperous New Year! 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR State sponsored terrorism documented in Ohio Dear Editor: Two cases of well documented acts of state-sponsored terrorism have occurred twice in Ohio within a year, yet the perpetrators have yet to see justice, and few media outlets have yet to report on it despite massive amounts of solid evidence. I have an audio recording of the owner of a home surveillance store in Columbus, Al Smith, who signed an affidavit for a woman who had a brain implant in her head after looking at her xrays and testing for radio frequencies. The audio interview is available for free at www.chadkister.com under my blog, and The Thought Police are Real in 2009. I have also posted several x-rays that clearly show the implant on the frontal lobe of one of the individuals. I also have a half-hour interview with Jeff Stibel, Chairman of Braingate, which makes brain implants. Both individuals stated that they were thought policed, with voices injected into their heads with the implants. Efforts were then made to declare the individuals mentally unfit to stand trial because of their asser-
tions. I know one of them personally, as a well known and respected scholar in the Athens, Ohio area. He continues to try to get his doctors to admit there is an object on his frontal lobe, pointing to it on the x-rays that you can see at www.chadkister.com, but his doctors have been given National Security Letters, and all they say is that everything looks normal. You can see the x-ray compared to an x-ray of a brain without a microchip, and you can clearly see the difference. I need some x-ray technicians to step forward and contact me that there is an object in the xray. We also desperately need independent, investigative reporters, either at newspapers or as personal projects for the protection of our civil liberties, to look into this major violation of civil liberties. While there is no question that this technology exists, the scant media coverage about brain implants has allowed its abuse to go on unnoticed. Such abuses will only get worse, and harder to detect with nanotechnology that is making miniaturized electronics, and brain-computer interface technology that is connecting these devices to people’s brains.

BEYOND THE RHETORIC
One Terrible Decade By Harry Alford NNPA Columnist The first decade of the 21st Century (2000 – 2009) was not a subtle period. It will probably be reported in future history as being a very challenging, morally chal-
Harry C. Alford
lenging, moment for America. I have come up with my Top Ten Events of the Last Decade: Number One - 9/11/2001: Not since Pearl Harbor has America been more shocked and surprised. It showed us that we must always be vigilant and conscious of exactly who are our enemies. I was on Capitol Hill (in the Senate
Russell Building) when it went down and witnessed the smoke bellowing from the Pentagon; tanks going across the Key Bridge; traffic at a complete standstill; cell phones cut off; etc. This was, without doubt, the worst day of my life. Number Two – The Big Recession: The worst aspect of this dire economic situation is that it isn’t over yet. African-Americans are losing one third of our net worth right before our eyes and the effects will be painful and longterm. Government Sponsored Enterprises (Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae) failed us by knowingly accepting fraudulent and worthless mortgages with our tax money. The crooks (sub-prime mortgage writers, Wall St. bankers, hedge fund pirates, etc.) have gotten away with the crimes and we, the taxpayers are taking the hit. The worst thing is that many of the crooks were made whole with more of our tax money. They double dipped us and now laugh in our faces. Number Three – Katrina: Never has our government neglected such a large group of citizens in time of crisis. All they had to do was turn on a television to precisely know of the pain and horror
our brothers and sisters in the Gulf Region were going through. They sat and did nothing until all the damage was done. This started the hunger for “change” in America. It was a total disgrace! Number Four – President Barack Hussein Obama: It hit us all by surprise. We elected an African- American with a Muslim name as the leader of the free world. The fruit of the Civil Rights Movement has hit a new high. The Black vote (98 percent for Obama) clearly made the difference 43 years after the passing of the Voting Rights Act. Number Five – The Patriot Act: 9/11/2001 and other events have caused a governmental paranoia that is infringing on many of our liberties. We just don’t know the full extent of what we have lost or will lose. Wire tapping, rendition, water boarding, profiling, checkpoints, etc. are in full swing. “Big Brother” has actually arrived. Number Six – Bush vs. Gore: This election shot my blood pressure way up. Gore won the popular vote but Bush had the Electoral College votes (or did he?) Florida became an issue of debate which was finally settled by the U.S. Supreme Court which was basically assembled by the Republican
Party. This taught us another lesson about our nation. It was something else not to be really proud of. Number Seven – Dotcom Bubble: This was another major theft by Wall St. gangsters. They played a well organized Ponzi Scheme on American stockholders, basically pension funds. There were too many new companies for a person to keep up with and what in the world were they selling or making? We still haven’t figured it out. One Dotcom CEO asked us to seat him next to our guest speaker at our annual luncheon. The speaker was a Fortune 500 CEO. During that time period he persuaded the speaker to buy some debentures he was selling. The speaker later told me that in two months they made $40 million off the debentures. The Dotcom CEO wired us $500 thousand dollars one day to thank us for the seating arrangement. The CEO is presently in jail along with many other Dotcom hustlers. Pension funds were left holding the bag when Enron, Worldcom and others all went down. Number Eight – Iraq War, Part 2: Saddam Hussein was given 13 more years of dictatorship and oppression when our military could
not adequately supply food and other quartermaster type supplies to its troops. The discriminatory process against Black suppliers hindered our readiness. Finally, the Military Industrial Complex made its move by propagandizing our citizens, manipulating our politicians and returning to war. We are still paying for this one too. Number Nine – Afghanistan War: The reasons are understandable but the prosecution of this conflict is taking way too long – almost to the point of failure. Let’s finish it! Number Ten – Passing of Michael Jackson: He was a culture molder and brought joy to billions of people around the world. We will never see another Michael! Question: Why did the FBI have a file on Michael and why did they help the prosecutors in his infamous trial? Perhaps it was too much money for one Black man. Good bye decade and good riddance! The Politics of Health Care Reform By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist Although House and Senate versions of the health care reform bill are weaker than they should be, the legislation making its way to President Barack Obama’s desk is far better than merely maintaining the status quo. Former DNC Chairman Howard Dean, a physician, said it would be better to do nothing than to enact the Senate version of health care reform. Howard Dean is wrong. It is a gross overstatement to assert that our current system comes close to matching anything being proposed by Democrats and opposed by every Republican senator. The major changes are that insurance companies will no longer be able to exclude people with preexisting conditions nor be able to cap the amount of care a person or family can receive in a given year. Those two provisions alone represent a sea of change in American health care. A serious flaw in the Senate bill is that there is no public option – or government-run insurance plan – that would assure enough competition to hold down pre-
miums, which have been rising in recent years at a rate faster than the cost of living. In addition, a requirement in both bills forcing everyone to purchase insurance or face fines is a bonanza for the insurance industry, providing them with millions of new customers. Allowing insurance companies to offer plans across state lines may assist in getting premiums to a more reasonable level, but that is not enough. That’s why it’s important to continue to monitor the negotiations over this bill by House and Senate conferees. Instead of a robust public option favored by progressives, conservative senators substituted a watered down federal health exchange where the uninsured can purchase coverage at a group rate. Less than 5 percent of Americans will be eligible for this coverage. The Senate bill would allow states to operate these exchanges, which means that national coverage will be uneven. Under the House bill, the exchange would be a national one with the federal Office of Personnel Management negotiating the rates, just as it does for all federal employees, including members of Congress. Another difference is that the

George E. Curry House’s plan to provide subsidies to people who cannot afford coverage is more generous than the senate bill. None of the changes will come soon enough. The Senate bill would go into effect in 2014, a year later than what the House proposes. The wrangling over health care reform exposed major cracks in the fragile Democratic coalition. Will Rogers is remembered for the famous line: “I am not a member of any organized political party. I am a Democrat.” That certainly rang true during this de-
bate. With 60 votes needed in the Senate to cut off an attempted Republican filibuster, every senator could play an outsized role as Majority Leader Harry Reid tried to hold the coalition together. That’s why, in the end, we saw Bill Nelson of Nebraska, threatening to withhold his vote until he got certain concessions for his state and Joe-the-Traitor Liberman promising to support a Republican filibuster if the public option wasn’t yanked from the senate version of the bill. Rather than risk defeat, progressives held their noses as conservative Democrats gutted some of the most important provisions of the health care reform bill. We saw similar behavior when the stimulus bill was passed. Coupled with the debate over health care, a disturbing pattern is unfolding. In his eagerness to win over at least some Republicans, President Obama makes significant concessions to conservative Republicans. In each instance, the Republicans initially pretend they want to sign on to bipartisan legislation, but eventually refuse to support the bill even after accommodations have been made for them. That was particuSaturday, January 2, 2010
larly true during the stimulus negotiations, which ended up with only Maine Sen. Olympia Snowe supporting the legislation. In that instance, Obama was careful to follow the wishes of Snowe. During negotiations over heath care, it was the president’s own party – along with Democrat-turned Independent Joe Lieberman -- that almost did him in. Again, progressives – many who claimed they would not support a bill without a public option – caved in. Everything centered around what it would take to keep wavering conservatives on board. Like so many other things, progressives, including the Congressional Black Caucus, were taken for granted. As was the case with Rodney Dangerfield, they didn’t get any respect. And they won’t get any respect until, like conservatives, they are willing to vote against legislation if their issues are placed on the back burner. Members of the CBC made a step in that direction when they boycotted a House Financial Services Committee vote and threatened to withdraw support for overall (Continued on page 16) 5

The fundamental issue that Africans in America must face is centered around the continued assault by the systems of racism and white supremacy that keeps us in bondage, servitude, and often times, confusion. What is at stake is our survival as a race
Dr. Conrad Worrill of people. We must come to grips with the following challenges as we enter a New Kwanzaa Season. Family Development: There is no question that the African in American family is in major disarray and is in need of major repair. Without strong African in America families, raising and nurturing our children, the future will remain bleak. Families are the foundation for the survival and development of a people. African men and women need to close ranks and reestablish the tradition of strong Black families in America. E c o no m i c De ve lopment: Many Africans in America women and men continue to remind us that we earn in excess of 600 billion dollars a year in this country. The tragedy of this economic potential in the African 6
Critical Commentary
Community in America is that the overwhelming majority of this income we earn, we spend with other people and not with our own. Other people still continue to dominate and maximize profits from our communities for their own advancement. When are we going to stop this awful practice of allowing other people to benefit from the dollars we earn? Po lit ical Develo pment: We have often said that politics is the science of who gets what, when, where, and how. And in this regard, we should recognize that the white power structure and its Black allies are doing everything possible to rupture our continuing movement for Black political empowerment. In electoral politics the lessons are clear. Personality clashes and individual personal conflicts have no place in the world of politics! The only thing that matters is what is best for African people in America. If we don’t remain unified politically, we will not benefit from our efforts to increase Black political power in Chicago or in any other cities in which we live. Cul tura l Develo pment: Why should other people profit from our artistic and creative endeavors? It is clear that we are a creative people with a unique culture of our own. However, in this area the writers, poets, musicians, dancers, singers, actors, etc. must strive to control what we create and the entire African Community should aggressively support their efforts. International Affairs: We must work harder to support the struggle of our brothers and sisters in Africa, the Caribbean, and South America in their continued liberation struggle for land and independence. Histo rical Discont inuity: It appears the more we are oppressed under the system of racism and white supremacy, the more we forget our history. One generation from the next has difficulty remembering our great struggles, battles, and movements. Harold Cruse points out in his book, The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual, “The farther the Negro [Black person] gets from his [her] historical antecedents in time, the more tenuous become his conceptual ties, the emptier his [her] social conceptions, the more su-

perficial his visions.” It must be clear, at this point in history that African people need to determine for ourselves solutions to the many serious problems we face. We should realize going into this New Kwanzaa Season that no one will do for us what we really need to do for ourselves. It is time we begin providing for ourselves in all areas of life. No longer should we listen and adhere to how other people define us and our struggle. Accomplishing the objective of elevating our struggle to a higher level will require that we become more skilled in organizing our communities toward our liberation and freedom. As an old African proverb points out, “Those who are dead have not gone forever. They are in the woman’s womb. They are in the child who whimpers.”
Craps! Can you believe this? It was recently told that there is a lawsuit filed against a popular soft drink/beverage company with a facility in Northlake, Illinois that says that there are some Mexican/Hispanic workers who are allegedly referring to the African American workers as “monkeys.” Imagine that and in this day and age no less. It is alleged that, the employer was approached by the African American workers to complain about the behavior of these workers, but the behavior continued with no indication that the concerns were being addressed. In this facility it is noted that the perpetrators of this poor behavior appears to outnumber the African American workers. This situation is comprised of those things that can make for a negative work environment. It is known that a lawyer has petitioned the employer and/or the
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Continued from page 4) health care “reform” bill. During the debate, Senator John McCain from Arizona raised the issue of being informed about the healthcare bill before asking the entire senate body to vote for it. Durbin’s answer was, “I would say to the senator from Arizona that I am in the dark almost as much as he is, and I am in the leadership.” [Emphasis added] Yet Senator Durbin and his fellow Democrats are considering a “nuclear option” to rush this unknown bill through the voting process. This means that a simple majority – only 50 votes – would impose government-run healthcare on all Americans. Even if elected officials, who will be deciding the fate of every U.S. citizen’s healthcare, don’t know what they are doing, there are some facts that are clear. To start, Americans will be taxed an additional half billion dollars, while Medicare services will be reduced by $464 billion. Obama/Reid/Pelosi governmentrun healthcare would lead to rationed medical care – meaning less time spent with a doctor, less preventative care, and more time spent waiting for important medical procedures and tests. Mandated insurance will provide coverage you don’t need and deprive you of needed coverage. Insur-
ance companies can’t compete with reduced government premiums. Some are estimating it will take as little as two years for insurance companies to fold. Now is the time to flood Senators Durbin and Burris with calls to oppose this proposal that even Durbin doesn’t understand. David E. Smith, Executive Director Illinois Family Institute

It is hoped that this matter can be resolved soon without members of either group growing tired and resorting to uncivilized behavior. This may be the time for individuals like Jesse Jackson or perhaps the federal government to step in before the situation escalates to such a place. Faith leaders tell ‘Tale of Two Holidays’ By Charlene Crowell NNPA Financial Writer (NNPA) - While President Barack Obama met with executives of the nation’s largest banks on December 14, a very different discussion was simultaneously occurring on the steps of the U.S. Treasury Building. In response to America’s still-unfolding foreclosure crisis, grassroots faith leaders from across the country stood with community advocates and struggling homeowners from California, Massachusetts and Missouri to voice an urgent call for fairness for families facing foreclosure. Spokespersons from PICO National Network, Faith in Public Life, Sojourners, and the Center for Responsible Lending, all told a “tale of two holidays” – of bountiful celebrations for bank executives receiving billions in bonuses, and another for the millions of families who have either lost or at risk of losing their homes on the other. “Many Americans see all too easily the immense contradiction between the record profits that Wall Street is back to making,” observed Rev. Lucy Kolin, speaking for PICO, “And the incredible pain and suffering that so many families are facing this holiday season – families who are losing their jobs and their homes due to a recession caused in large part by banks’ reckless behavior.” One troubled homeowner, who journeyed to Washington for the event, shared her personal plight in trying to secure a mortgage modification. According to Mercy Martinez from San Jose, Calif., “I put $100,000 down on my condo; I had enough money for a traditional, 30-year fixed rate loan.” She cotinued, “But the loan servicer unethically tricked me into an adjustable rate loan that could put me in foreclosure at any moment. It’s a time bomb.. . . I live with daily anxiety knowing that when my payment adjusts, I won’t be able to pay my mortgage.” Jim Wallis, CEO of Sojourners and another event speaker spoke even more bluntly. “To take advantage of consumers should not only be a crime; but it is a sin against God,” said Wallis. “Teachers, social workers, small business owners and our men and women in the armed services all know what it means to sacrifice for the good of our country in tough times and they do so with pride. I refuse to believe that Wall Street is the one place in the country that is exempt,” he concluded. Rev. Kolin and Wallis were right. We urge you to reject the pressure of lobbying by financial institutions and stand up for consumers by supporting strong efforts to restore integrity and morality to our financial system, stabilize communities, and keep families in their homes.” For families facing foreclosure as well as those who have already lost their homes, that call for action in Washington is also a real Christmas wish. Annual Tribute to DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
ished among the Boy King’s most trusted advisers. Less than a decade after his elevation, King Tut suddenly perished and in the years and centuries that followed, his name was purged from Egyptian history. To this day his death remains shrouded in controversy. The keys to an unsolved mystery! Intrigued by what little was known about Tut, and hoping to unlock the answers to the 3,000 year-old mystery, Howard Carter made it his life’s mission to uncover the pharaoh’s hidden tomb. He began his search in 1907 but encountered countless setbacks and dead ends before he finally discovered the long-lost crypt. The clues point to murder! Now, in “ The Murder of King Tut”($26.99; Hachette Book Group), James Paterson and Martin Dugard dig through stacks of evidence—-x-rays, Carter’s files, forensic clues and stories told through the ages—-to arrive at their own account of King Tut’s life and death. The result is an exhilarating true-crime tale of intrigue, passion, and betrayal that casts fresh light on the oldest mystery of all. Cirque du Soleil’s Banana Shpeel Falls Flat A Review by Bonnie DeShong
mance of the dancers is awesome, creative fun and energizing.
Cirque du Soleil has opened its world premier of its new show, Banana Shpeel, at the The Chicago Theater. Weeks ago, I was in the opening night audience. Why has it taken so long to write a review? I have never written a negative review about a Cirque du Soleil production and I had a hard time sitting down to write this one. Banana Shpeel is said to be a “theatrical mix of comedy and dance inspired by Vaudeville.” What this production is is a “Hot Mess.” When I think of Cirque du Soleil, I envision mystery, wonder, fantasy, music, and people flying, tumbling and twisting into shapes I can only dream of. When I think of Vaudeville, I envision fast paced bits, great comedic timing, and pratt falls. The two in this production do not mix. However, I was taught if you can’t say anything good about something, don’t say anything. There are some goods along with the bad in this production. Goo d – The Choreography of Jared Grimes and the perfor-
Bad – The script is horrible. I will not point the finger at the clowns who have to perform what is in the script. The Clowns do their jobs well. The bits, such as The Audition and the thing with the girl (wink, wink) from the audience and the dinner are way too long and not funny. Cirque du Soleil shows have an inner story that we buy into. Perhaps if the love story was between a clown hoping to gain the attention of the lead singer in the show, I might have enjoyed it more.

that are in the show. B ad – There weren’t more Cirque du Soleil type acts in the show. Good – The costumes, set and make-up. B ad – Unfortunately, The Chicago Theater appeared to be too small a space for a Cirque show.
Banana Spheel heads to New York after leaving Chicago on January 3, 2010. I do hope that the director, David Shiner, will restructure the show to make it enjoyable and recognizable as a Cirque du Soleil production with a touch of Vaudeville.

Mariah Terry sings Five Loaves of Bread. Since the Kidz Korna youth group’s work was featured on Oprah’s Angel Network for their involvement in the community to help stop youth violence and child abuse donations have been on the rise. Over 7,000 juveniles and youth lined up to participate this year not only to receive gifts, but to get inspired about cherishing the gift of life as over 75% of our KK youth were once victims and are now becoming victors in helping others to stop this youth violence and child abuse. People were jumping out of cars and hopping off the bus to line up, not knowing whether there would be enough gifts for all who came. As with many miracles the group was surprised when a driver pulled up to drop off a truck filled with gifts sent by an anonymous donor. Ernie Sanders, a member of St. Sabina, droved around the block a few times to see how he could help, returning later with gifts as well. Farley Jackmaster Funk, the House Music legend pulled out his speakers to calm the crowd with House Music hits. Special guests included Chicago’s own T’Keyah Crystal

She was a product of the Englewood community who is now making it in Hollywood. Also in attendance was Reverend Elijah L Hill, President/CEO of National Museum of African American Religions, who addressed the church community impact on the decline of youth violence. Stroger skips out of Black media roundtable dent has managed to balance four (4) $3 billion budgets, and its never been on the front-page of one paper, Williams said, hinting that race may play a part in the biased coverage of Stroger. He also refuted claims in the New York Times and the Tribune that pits Stroger and Mayor Daley against each other. Williams hopes the campaign gets Daley’s endorsement. “We haven’t gotten it to this day,” he said. “They have not said they are not with us, but they have not taken any further steps to be for us.” Stroger faces a tough campaign in the February Democratic Primary. He faces three challengers, Alderman Toni Preckwinkle (4), Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown and Water Reclamation District President Terry O’Brien. However, Williams contends this campaign is winnable. Based on the Democratic slating process held in September, Stroger holds a solid number of Democratic commit-
teemen support from the city and suburban townships. Williams said 23 slated committeemen Stroger compared to 10 for Preckwinkle, nine for O’Brien, seven for Davis and one for Brown while twenty-seven voted present. “Because of the short window and the lack of name recognition on behalf of his competitors, I think we’ll be competitive in those areas where he has not gotten the nod from the committeemen,” he explained. But he did concede that Stroger needs to get “the lion’s share” of Black votes to win as well as a “preponderance” of votes from whites, Asians and Latinos. When asked about Congressman Luis Gutierrez endorsement of Preckwinkle, Williams said congressional endorsements do not win local races. Williams also noted that the media has turned the county board presidency into a race about race. He added that was not by the campaign’s design, but he noted the Black community has a lot to lose if Stroger does not retain this seat.
The featured guests for the event were judges: Kendall Moore of WVON’s Kendall Moore Show and Darryll King, on-air personality of Rejoice 102.3 and SOUL106.3; and the evening’s host, television personality, Deborah Crable. The guests were entertained by professional

“We didn’t want it to be about race. We want it to be about the fact that he balanced the budget. He tried to keep the clinics and hospitals open,” Williams said. However, he noted there is a racial component since Stroger is the only Black with executive level power in the state, a fact not widely known. Also a Black has not been seated on the fifth floor of City Hall since 1989 with little effort to regain that seat since then, Williams said. “You almost have to go to the east coast to the president of the United States himself, governor of New York, governor of Massachusetts and the mayor of Washington D.C. to find African-Americans in leadership and in control of multi-million dollar budgets,” he explained. At 46 years-old Stroger is also the youngest executive in Illinois, a fact that could allow Stroger to share the same political longevity as Mayor Daley, Williams explained. “We would have that seat vested in our community as long as we supported it,” he said.
Without a Black in any key executive positions, Blacks would be regulated to state legislators, senators, aldermen and mayors of small villages and towns, Williams explained. “That would be the extent of our power in this state,” he said, adding that Stroger “would be the only African-American with any kind of power other than the Irish white males that control everything else [now].”
