Church denies Crusader access to Dr. King event By Wendell Hutson On a day when the nation paused to recognize civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. a Black church denied the Crusader access to a South Side public event. Governor Pat Quinn met Monday with Corey Brooks, Sr., pastor of New Beginnings Church, 6625 South King Drive, who has been sleeping on top of the shuttered Super Motel since November until his church can raise $450,000 to buy the motel’s land. The church plans to demolish the building and redevelop it into a $10 million community center, according to Brooks, whose 2,500 members are predominately Black. As of December 31, the church had raised nearly $200,000, according to Danielle Willis, a spokeswoman for New Beginnings Church. The Crusader received the same media advisory about the event from Willis just as all other media. But around 2:50 p.m. when the Crusader arrived at the event, which was held in front of the church, the Crusader reporter was told by church volunteers, acting as security guards, to leave the ‘media’ section and instead stand across the street on the sidewalk where about 100 people were also standing and cheering. And every other reporter and TV cam-
eraman was taken on top of the roof to interview Brooks but the Crusader was not allowed because “these are the media outlets that confirmed they were attending,” Willis said. But the Crusader also confirmed via email to Willis. “Please stand on the sidewalk my brother until we get further instructions for you,” said one church security guard, who did not give his name. But when the Crusader began asking why was it the only media outlet not allowed in the media section, which was set up on the street, no one gave a straight answer. The U.S. Constitution affords the media the right to cover events held on public property, such as streets, once identified as a journalist, one Chicago police officer at the event told the Crusader. In Chicago, all government media credentials are issued by the Chicago Police Department, which conducts background checks on all individual journalists. The Crusader had its police issued media pass displayed and even showed it to Willis and church security guards. Afterwards, Willis implied that the Crusader was also not granted the same ‘convenient’ access as other reporters, who coincidently were all white, because of a January 5 story it ran on the pastor.
“Why would you expect things not to be contentious with the stories you have written about Pastor Brooks?” Willis said in a phone interview. “And you not cooperating only made things worse.”
person is making a sacrifice to benefit others or for a worthy cause. And the person featured in the story (in this case Brooks) would receive $50,000. Brooks said he declined to sign the release
OBSERVING FROM AFAR is what the Crusader reporter had to do on Monday after being denied ‘convenient’ access to cover a public event in front of the shuttered Super Motel at 6620 South King Drive by New Beginnings Church. The January 5 story reported that Brooks had refused to sign a promotional release form that would have allowed a previous Crusader story on him to be entered into the “America Inspired” contest sponsored on the website examiner.com. On Feb. 1 the website will award $50,000 to five stories in five different categories that received the most online votes between January 9 through 27. For the Sacrifice category, which is where the story on Brooks would have appeared, the story must show how a

Community groups want more concessions By Wendell Hutson Several community groups including Occupy The South Side said they still are not happy with changes the city wants to make with a new protest ordinance even though the mayor has backed off some changes. “This proposed ordinance is a direct attack on free speech and the U.S. Constitution,” said Marissa Brown, an organizer for Occupy The South Side, at a Tuesday City Hall news conference. “Those who take away free speech from others are not worthy to have free speech themselves.” In preparation for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and G-8 summits that Chicago will host for the first-time May
15 to 22, Mayor Rahm Emanuel has proposed making several changes to how the city handle protesters. Previously, the mayor had outlined a plan that called for fines ranging from $200 to $1,000 for protesters who resist arrest. Now the mayor reportedly is willing to drop that proposal and keep fines at their current penalty of $25 to $500. “The NATO and G8 summits present an exciting opportunity to showcase our extraordinary city to the world,” he said. “Hosting these summits puts the spotlight on Chicago as a city on the move and an unparalleled destination for travel, tourism and business.” The city expects to spend up to $65 million to host the summits.
OCCUPY THE SOUTH SIDE organizer Marissa Brown was among a fraternity of community and protest groups that converged on City Hall Tuesday to denounce proposed changes the city wants to make to protesters. The city expects a large mass of protesters to invade downtown Chicago when the NATO and G-8 summits are held May 15 to 22.
FREE SPEECH DEMONSTRATORS gathered Tuesday at City Hall to voice their opposition to changes Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants to make to protesters in anticipation of the NATO and G-8 summits in Chicago this year. Other changes the mayor has proposed, which the City Council will vote on this week, include more surveillance cameras; greater parade restrictions; any signs that will be used during the protest must first be identified on a city permit to be allowed; parks and beaches closed until 6 a.m; and allowing the Chicago Police Department to use out-of-state law enforcement personnel, such as police officers from other states. One protest group said people would have very little respect for the law if the proposed changes are adopted by the City Council.
Pentagon issues $375,300 grant to Chicago Election Board
“If these ordinances pass, all bets are off,” said Andy Thayer, a spokesman for the Coalition Against the NATO G-8 War and Poverty Agenda. “If the federal government decides to nix the permit we’ve already received, all bets are off. Why should people respect the law if the law does not respect them?

Church denies Crusader access to Dr. King event (Continued from page 1) said he had not yet spoken to Willis so he could not comment on an incident he was unaware took place. “My focus is on young, Black males being murdered. The focus is not you or I. The focus is them and that’s all I care about,” Brooks said. “I am sacrificing everything being on this roof. I am sacrificing my family and my life and I do not have time for foolishness.” And Brooks’ Executive Assistant Pastor Steve Bozeman, who was
The Pentagon’s Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) has issued a $375,300 grant to the Chicago Election Board to implement systems designed to automate and simplify balloting for military and overseas voters. The funding is part of the Department of Defense’s $20 million “Electronic Absentee Systems for Elections” (EASE) program, to support the development of systems for online registration, absentee ballot requests, and blank ballot delivery. The goal is to increase the rates at which military voters are able to receive, vote and return their ballots in time to be counted. Chicago Election Board Chairman Langdon D. Neal said the agency plans to start using the
new hardware, software and web programs in time to begin delivering 2012 Primary Election ballots, starting Feb. 3, to members of the U.S. Armed Forces and civilians stationed overseas. “Chicago’s military and overseas voters now will be able to use online services, such as voter registration and the ability to request, receive and mark their absentee ballots online,” Neal said. “Our military and overseas voters then will be able to print out their selections and their envelope labels, and return the documents with a signed certification through military mail, standard mail, embassies and international courier services.” “These voters also will be able to track the status of their ballots to see when they arrived online,” Neal said. “We are extremely grateful to the FVAP for including Chicago in these pilot programs that are designed to protect the voting rights of members of our Armed Forces who are de-
fending our democracy.” “We have always prided ourselves on consistently delivering the ballots to members of the Armed Forces first, ahead of any other voters,” Neal said. “We hope this system will simplify that process for the benefit of all voters covered by the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA) in this and future elections.” FVAP Director Bob Carey said, “FVAP continuously researches how to improve these UOCAVA ballot acceptance rates. One way to improve the success rates of voted ballots is to research the technology used by the voters. These grants give the States a chance to test technologies to learn what helps military and overseas voters most.” The grant to Chicago covers elections through 2014. The Election Board is partnering with California-based Everyone Counts for the new software, hardware and web-based systems.

And just prior to the Crusader voluntarily leaving the event Brooks came down from the rooftop temporarily along with Quinn to thank everyone for their support and asked for their continued prayers.

Longer school days begin for CPS By Wendell Hutson Even though the school district’s longer school day program will not be fully implemented until this fall, last week many elementary schools started extending the day for its students. And Chicago Public Schools Chief Executive Officer JeanClaude Brizard couldn’t be happier. “We know that our students need additional instruction time in front of a teacher in core subjects like reading, math and science,” he said. “The Pioneer Schools will be the models on how we can provide our students with the high-quality education they need to become college and career ready. It is important that we obtain feedback and input from teachers and parents at these schools as we prepare for all schools in the District to implement the full school day for the 2012-13 year.” Schools now extending their days will receive a revised budget over the next few weeks, including funding that will help them transition to the full school day. Chicago currently ranks last in the amount of time students spend in the classroom, according to Brizard. And CPS elementary students receive 22 percent less instructional time than the national average. Brizard said studies have
shown that the more time students spend on core subjects like reading, math and science, the more they understand, learn and grow academically. “Our students cannot afford to wait for the high-quality education they deserve. The system has failed their needs for far too long and the full school day will provide them with more time on core subjects to prepare for college and career,” explained Brizard. “The full school day can ensure that we can boost academic achievement in every classroom throughout the district.” An additional 37 charter elementary schools also increased instructional time last week. And when combined with the 11 other neighborhood schools extending their day as well, more than 22,000 students will benefit from a longer day, according to Marielle Sainvilus, a spokeswoman for CPS. The Pioneer program provides students with an additional 90 minutes of instructional time to improve their performance in core subjects, such as math, reading and science. In addition, participating schools have dedicated 45 minutes for lunch and recess. Among the schools that began extending their day in September, 71 percent of the time was spent focusing on core subjects, while 29 per-
cent have been spent on enrichment, including physical education, art, music and other areas, CPS data showed. Some elementary schools started in September extending their day by providing their students with an additional 85 hours of instructional time, which is the equivalent of 17 more days of instructional time, primarily focused on core subjects like reading, math and science. Brizard added he is proud of all schools that chose to participate in this in the Pioneer program this school year. “We’re grateful to those Pioneers schools for the commitment they made to children throughout our system who need more time in the classroom with their teachers,” said Brizard. “Giving our students the extra time they need in classes such as math, science and reading is critical in our efforts to boost their academic success.” CPS had sought to enroll more schools in the program but were halted from doing so after the Chicago Teachers Union forced their hand. In November, the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board agreed with the union that CPS was in violation of its contract with the CTU by negotiating directly with schools, and not through the union, on ex-
CEO Jean-Claude Brizard tending their day. The ruling meant CPS could not continue recruiting schools to participate in its longer school day program at the objection of the CTU. The schools that had already agreed to extend their school day in January were allowed to do so. Karen Lewis, president of the CTU, said the union is not against longer days but wanted to first make sure that the additional minutes at school would be used wisely before implementing the program. “The longer school day is a political slogan not an education plan.
Planned development could end food desert By Wendell Hutson If all goes well residents living in south suburban Robbins could soon be shopping at a new Blackowned grocery store. At least that’s what entrepreneur Darrell Mitchell, a longtime Robbins resident, is working toward. “It is time for someone to finally address the needs of Robbins. And one need we have here is a
grocery store that sells fresh vegetables, fruits and produce,” Mitchell, 37, told the Crusader. “I am sick and tired of watching other villages recycle their dollars while Robbins residents spend their money outside of town.” There are currently no full-service grocery stores in Robbins where residents could go to buy fresh produce, vegetables and fruits. “Not unless you count the few
corner liquor stores that also sell a few grocery items like milk, bread and lunch meat,” Mitchell said. “As it stands, Robbins residents must travel to nearby Alsip to reach a ‘real’ grocery store.” The 30,000 square foot grocery store, Save-More Finer Foods, is part of a $20 million, three-phase development at 3300 W. 137th St. that is scheduled to break ground this year and be up and running by year’s end, according

to Mitchell. A 15,000 square foot urban garden is also part of phase one and will be built next to the grocery store. Phase one and two are called the Claire Boulevard Shopping Center and phase three is the Renaissance Plaza. Phase two will be an extension of the grocery store and phase three will offer commercial office and retail space. No delivery date has been set yet for phases two and three. “The urban garden is part of first lady Michelle Obama’s healthy eating initiative,” added Mitchell. “The garden will have farm raised catfish and grow organic fruit and vegetables.” Robbins is comprised of 5,820 residents and most are Black, according to U.S. Census data. To date, DM Group Associates Inc., a development company Mitchell founded in 2004, has raised $110,000 but another $300,000 is needed before it can secure bank financing. The project has netted 27 investors, half are Robbins residents, and those investors have given between $500 and $77,000, according to Mitchell. Once all three phases are complete Mitchell said he is confident it will spur more economic develContinued on page 16) Saturday, January 21, 2012
The Chicago Teachers Union has called for a better school day, one that includes a comprehensive, rich curriculum that includes art, music, physical education, science, world languages and civics,” explained Lewis. “(And) unlike CTU members, employees at most privately held charter schools are at-will employees who are not protected by collective bargaining agreements.” In the end though, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said by continuing to do battle with the CTU would not benefit anyone in the long run. “A dispute over the decision of these schools to spend 90 more minutes in the classroom would have accomplished nothing for our children,” the mayor said. “We must focus our efforts on the classroom – not the courtroom. As we make plans for all schools to begin a longer school day next year, collaboration between leaders of CPS and CTU will become even more important to the success of our students in the classroom and in the workforce for the future. Above all, our students must come first.” New state legislation allows CPS to extend the school day next school year without union consent. The CTU’s current contract with CPS expires June 30.

OPINION
EDITORIAL DR. KING'S DREAM DEFERRED? On Monday, January 16, 2012, Americans celebrated the 83rd birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (His actual birthday was on January 15). Giving one's life for a cause is arguably the noblest service that one can give. Dr. King, based on his last speech given the night before his assassination, gave us a hint that he knew that his time might be short on this earth; he seemed to offer a prophecy of his assassination. Yet, he continued his drumbeat for justice. In looking back, we can ask whether or not Dr. King was let down, whether or not leadership somehow dropped the ball and failed to follow through on the gains that he was successful in influencing. Apparently, one leader feels that Dr. King is owed an apology. Earl Graves, founder and publisher of Black Enterprise Magazine, wrote an article entitled "An Apology to Dr. King" wherein he accuses leadership of failing to make good on Dr. King's dream. An excerpt of this article states the following: "The evidence shows that our failure is as complete as it is indisputable. Nearly 60 years after Brown v. Board of Education, American education remains largely segregated by race, with Black children bearing the brunt of failing public schools. We’re failing King in economic justice. Today, the wealth gap between African Americans and white Americans is wider than ever, and Black-owned businesses remain largely excluded from economic power centers—from Hollywood and Silicon Valley to Wall Street and Madison Avenue. The quality of life for African Americans in our urban centers has hardly improved, and in many cases, has worsened, since many urban areas were destroyed by riots in the aftermath of King’s assassination. Sadly, in nearly every area, from healthcare outcomes to high school drop-out rates to entire generations of African Americans trapped in our prison system, the world we’re leaving to our children and grandchildren is no better than the one we inherited." These are powerful words, indeed, and it is honorable for Mr. Graves to take on this responsibility, however, this is just one part of the truth. Progress takes time, and we are so close to the actual event that took Dr. King's life that we expect things to change immediately. This is an unreasonable expectation. There is a saying that it is always darkest before the dawn. We are definitely in the throes of darkness at this time, as evidenced by the issues cited in Mr. Graves article. But it is also true that there has been progress. We have an African American president, something that many felt would never happen, at least not this soon, and other individuals who have made great gains. Some of the most powerful people on the planet are African Americans. Admittedly, this has not quite trickled down to the rank and file, but in any society, you always have those at the top and those at the bottom. What is important to realize is that at the point that Dr. King's message reaches the rank and file, especially the middle class, things will begin to change at a more rapid pace, and this means celebrating and honoring Dr. King's message year round, and not just on his birthday, which is the first national holiday honoring an African American. This also means accepting personal responsibility for our lives. The important thing to remember is that Dr. King said that he saw us reaching the mountaintop; that he saw that we as a people would reach the promised land. If he is truly the prophet that we believe him to be, we should take him at his word. We will get there. In the meanwhile, Mr. Graves and other apologists will serve to spur us on. They serve as a catalyst for the realization of Dr. King's dream by reminding us to follow through on our part. 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Citizens will be the losers with Quinn’s plan To the Editor: Governor Quinn recently rattled his sword in support of a casino in Chicago and four other sites in Illinois. He also touted the Feds giving the okay for Illinois to begin selling lottery tickets online. Then he cited with enthusiasm video poker would be ready to start later in 2012. Quinn in his rush to negotiate a suitable gambling expansion bill for Illinois has now become the “gambling king” in the United States. What Quinn has not disclosed: in order for the state to be successful at being a gambling winner, you the citizen must be the loser. In December the 1.3 million customers of Illinois’ ten casinos lost $102 for each visit. That is an average figure taking into account winners and across all levels of gambling amounts wagered. Pat Quinn used to be in favor of citizen input into public policy issues. But not anymore. Now Quinn consults with legislators that receive millions of dollars in campaign contributions from gambling interests to decide for the “little people” what is best for them. I am not a moralist opposed to gambling. I play a game of skill
called poker with my friends. However, I never would waste my money at a casino on slots which are programmed for the fat cat casino owners and the state through taxes to win. Casino gambling promoted by the state is a losing proposition for the citizens of Illinois. If Chicago, a proven place of corruption, should consider a casino it should be through a fair referendum of its citizens. We urge Governor Quinn to return to his former political self and save Chicago from a fate this world class city does not need.

BEYOND THE RHETORIC
One Hundred Years Later and it Still Doesn’t Work By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist There has been such an enormous amount of attention given to the production of Bio-Diesel, Ethanol and other forms of alternative energy. You can drive out in the Midwest or Texas and see windmills twirling all over the scenery. How much of a difference has this made to our carbon “foot print”? The answer is disappointing. There hasn’t been much of a dent made. In fact, there may have been more harm than good. Windmills are not rocket science. People have been using windmills for water power since the 16th century. Energy tycoon T. Boone Pickens invested many millions of dollars and reached a firm conclusion: It is not the answer. He has decided not to build another single windmill. Besides that, virtually all of the parts that go into a windmill are made in China. There is no significant impact on American jobs or energy output. The most interesting alternative is Ethanol or bio fuel. This too is an old technology. The history of it goes back to George Washing-
Harry C. Alford ton Carver, the great scientist of Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. Dr. Carver did an overwhelming amount of development with peanuts. Much of this was due to a contractual arrangement he had with automobile magnate Henry Ford. The auto industry was booming and the demand for oil was growing at an exponential rate. Ford wanted Dr. Carver to come up with a bio fuel to replace the need for oil. The Rockefeller Family and others had the lock on oil and he didn’t want to be-
come overly dependent on them. After years of experimentation on the Tuskegee campus, Dr. Carver and Henry Ford came to this conclusion: It is not feasible to develop bio fuel. That was over one hundred years ago. The fact still applies yet, environmentalists and politicians have pushed hard to further the development of bio-fuel. It works but not on an economical basis. The less bio fuel you have the more gasoline you will need. However, there is plenty of oil in the world and we just have to develop a cleaner way of using it. That is the better alternative. Food should be eaten as hunger still prevails in many parts of the world. The rapid expansion of the bio fuel industry has put a big strain on the supply of food crops such as corn, sugar, palm oil and wheat. Not only are these crops directly consumed by humans they are also key ingredients in feed for livestock such as cattle, sheep, chickens, turkeys, etc. In addition to livestock, nearly thirty percent of edible items found in a supermarket have such ingredients in them. Thus, the increased demand for bio fuels has
significantly increased the price of groceries which has a terrible affect on the consumer price index and inflation. We all feel this every time we buy food. Lobbyists and fiscally liberal politicians have been pushing for subsidies as incentives to those manufacturing these bio fuels. Fortunately, the annual subsidies that were given to producers of the bio fuels have ended. This thirty year ridiculous program has now ended and hopefully our grocery prices will start to decrease. Supplies of bio fuel start to decrease. The largest foreign producer of it, Brazil, has started cutting back on its sugar cane to ethanol program as the margins in the production do not justify much of a future. Another, ethanol giant, China, has also started to decrease its activity for the same reason. Gasoline prices alone should drop about 95 cents per gallon as a result of this stupid program’s demise. Actually, the future of energy stewardship will rely on the great engineering capacity found in energy giants such as Chevron, Shell, Exxon and others. They have the engineers and have invested many millions of dollars in
finding ways to produce energy in a cleaner, safer and more economical fashion. It won’t be environmental groups, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Sierra Club, Greenpeace or any other entity that will provide breakthroughs in the economic efficiency and cleanliness in the energy industry. It will be our corporate giants who will lead the way. This experiment with ethanol has been nothing but a “flash from the past”. It can work in a limited way to replace oil but it comes at a very expensive price. It is imprudent to go down the same road that Dr. George Washington Carver and Henry Ford journeyed more than a hundred years ago. They showed us that it doesn’t work and nothing has changed. Energy efficiency will come as experimentation and research continues. There is no need to fake it as such folly can bring economic harm to all of us. Mr. Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce, Inc(r). Website: www.nationalbcc.org. Email: halford@nationalbcc.org.
A Diverse U.S. Population Will Not Guarantee Parity By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist The United States’ population is growing increasingly diverse, but the sharp demographic shift is unlikely to close the huge economic gap between whites and people of color, according to an annual report issued by United For a Fair Economy, a nonpartisan think tank that studies wealth and power in the U.S. Each year the Boston-based organization issues its “State of the Dream” report near Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. Citing Census Bureau figures, the report notes that whites constituted 80 percent of the U.S. population in 1980. By 2010, that figure had slipped to 65 percent. And by 2042, whites will become a minority for the first time since the Colonial days. “If the trends in racial economic inequality continue at the rate that they have since 1980, the changing demographics of the country will produce a vast racialized underclass that will persist even after the majority of the country is nonwhite,” the report concluded. The Chicago Crusader
George E. Curry Examples of racial and ethnic inequality in the U.S. include: • In 2010, the median family income of Black and Latino families was 57 cents to every dollar of white median family income. By 2042, the median Black family will earn approximately 61 cents for every dollar of income earned by whites. Latino families are projected to earn only 45 cents in 2042 on every dollar of white median family income. • The wealth gap is particularly disturbing. In 2007, at the height of the housing bubble, the average white family net worth was five times greater than the average Black net worth and more than 3.5 times the average Latino net
worth. If current trends continue, the report states, Black families will by 2042 accumulate 19 cents for each dollar of white net worth. Latinos will have 25 cents per dollar. That means the wealth gap between whites and people of color in 2042 will be even larger than it is today. • Education is the most important tool we have to expand social mobility Thanks to civil rights gains, affirmative action and other progress, Black adults are 60 percent as likely to have a college degree as white adults; Latinos are only 42 percent as likely. If current trends continue, by 2042, African-Americans will continue to make progress in closing the education gap. However, the gap will be even larger for Latinos. • People of color represent more than 65 percent of the prison population, largely because of harsh drug laws and selective prosecutions that are part of the war on drugs. Blacks are six times more likely to be in prison than whites. Roughly 65 percent of Black men born since the mid1970s have prison records. The report observes, “If current trends continue to 2042, the percentage of people of color who have experienced jail time will dwarf even that number.”
Blacks Must control their own coMMunity
To reduce what it calls the “perverse concentration of wealth and power in the U.S.,” the report declares, “We need nothing less than a diverse, powerful social movement dedicated to advancing meaningful policy solutions on many fronts to reduce the racial divide.” It will take a powerful movement to counter corrupting influence that money has on politics. “To gain political power necessary to make significant progress toward racial economic equality, the influence of money in politics must be reduced and voting rights for all Americans must be restored and protected,” the reports observes. “Eliminating racial inequality will require a powerful and sustained political movement, aligned not just along the lines of race, but also by economic interests.” Authors of the report noted that the Occupy Wall Street movement and similar efforts around the country are steps in the right direction toward building a broad coalition. In the aftermath of King Day celebrations, it is important to remember that Dr. King was organizing a Poor People’s Campaign at the time of his assassination. Encouraged by the passage of the Saturday, January 21, 2012
Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1968, he was creating a movement to address economic injustice. In his last speech on the eve of his assassination, referred to as the “Mountain Top” speech, Dr. King talked about the need to support Black business. He said, “We begin the process of building a greater economic base.” Picking up where King left off, the report stated, “It is a moral and economic imperative that we address the racial economic divide now. If we are to chart a path to a more promising future, one in which the racial economic divide is significantly narrowed and prosperity is more broadly shared, then we must take immediate action to ensure that the coming majority is not further burdened by the legacy of racism and white supremacy in the United States.” George E. Worrill’s World By Dr. Conrad W. Worrill
RACIAL SOLIDARITY AND ECONOMIC INDEPENDENCE (Dr. Worrill, National Chairman Emeritus of the National Black United Front / NBUF, located at 1809 East 71st Street, Suite 211, Chicago, Illinois 60649, 773.493.0900 Fax: 773.493.9819, E-mail: nbufchi@sbcglobal.net, Website: nbufront.org)
Dr. Conrad Worrill In this present era of economic and educational onslaught against the African Community in America, it is im-
portant that we understand that the rise of the African Centered Education Movement should be linked to our quest for economic independence. We must free the “African mind” through African Centered Educational activities so that we might better understand the importance of economic self-reliance. One model that we draw strength from in pursuing economic and educational liberation is the model established by the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in the 1920s. The more I read and study about Marcus Garvey, the more I am amazed at the great contributions he made to African people to become a self reliant and self sufficient people. At the core of Marcus Garvey’s program was his urging of African people to acquire education and economic power. As he always started, “A race without power is a race without respect.” When we examine the economic condition of Africans in America, and throughout the world, we find one glaring problem— African people do not control our economic resources at the level we should. This is primarily due to
our miseducation as a people. In a disproportionate manner, African people depend on the European and Asian world for food, clothing, and shelter. More often than not, the European and Asian worlds are the producers, processors, distributors, and wholesalers. African people are the consumers. This was one of the major problems that the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey addressed during his lifetime and that Minister Louis Farrakhan continues to address. As Dr. Tony Martin writes in his book Race First, which is one of the best books written on the works of Marcus Garvey, “Marcus Garvey, unlike his major rivals in the United States, built a mass organization that went beyond civilrights agitation and protest and based itself upon a definite, well thought out program that he believed would lead to the total emancipation of the race from white dominion.” To implement his program, Garvey set up the Negro Factories Corporation (NFC). Its objective was to build and operate factories in the big industrial centers of the United States, Central America, the Caribbean, and Africa. The NFC established a chain of coop-
erative grocery stores, a restaurant, a steam laundry, tailor and dressmaking shop, a millinery store, and a publishing house. Mr. Garvey also established a steamship company, The Black Star Line. He envisioned a fleet of steamers carrying passengers and establishing trade among African people of the United States, Central America, the Caribbean, and Africa. In the summer of 1920, Garvey launched his full blown program at the First Annual Convention of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) of which he was the founder and first President General. On August 2, 1920, after a massive parade of thousands of well drilled, uniformed ranks of the UNIA, 35,000 delegates from allover the United States and some twenty-five countries convened at Madison Square Garden, in New York City. It was, according to the New York Times, one of the largest gatherings in the history of the hall. Dr. Martin explains that, “Central to the ideological basis underpinning Garvey’s program was the question of race. For Garvey, the Black man was universally oppressed on racial grounds, and no matter how much people try to shy
away from this issue, the fact is, this is still true today.” As Malcolm X used to say, it was our Blackness “which caused so much hell not our identity as Elks, Masons, Baptists or Methodists.” If we are ever to become a liberated people this idea must be deeply rooted in the day to day organizing and mobilizing of our people as we seek economic and educational liberation. Far too many Africans in America have abandoned this idea in their organizing projects. Mr. Garvey understood that the foundation of our liberation was economic and educational independence based on racial solidarity. There are numerous lessons we can learn from the legacy of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey. Without economic independence tied to the acquisition of political power, African people in America and African people everywhere will continue to be the subjects of the whims of other people. In this regard, Garvey said, “...you can be educated in soul, vision and feeling, as well as in mind. To see your enemy and know him is a part of the complete education of man... Develop yours and you become as great and full of knowledge as the other fellow without entering the classrooms.”

tinuing barriers to educational access in communities of color and among those who are low income. While our international competitors are investing in education, we are simply divesting. It is almost as if we have made a decision to devolve into a developing country. What would Dr. King say about all this? I think he’d be outside with the folks from Occupy Wall Street, and I think he’d be directing them to a 21st century version of the Poor People’s Campaign. I think he’d be standing outside some of the banks, asking why they deserve the bailouts that ordinary people can’t get. Just as he occupied a housing project in Chicago, I bet he’d camp out with a family experiencing foreclosure. I know he’d be challenging us all. There have been significant changes since Dr. King was assassinated in 1968, and the signs don’t say white or colored any more. The signs don’t have to say it – in some instances outcomes do. In other words, there are no signs on dollars that say white or
I always feel inspired and elated, but also challenged and chagrined, at some of the celebrations of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday. There are those, too many folks, who want to sanitize Dr. King and turn him into a dreamer. Too many only quote the part of his “I have a dream” speech that talks about character content and skin color. Too few remember that in the same speech he said, “We have come to the nation’s capital to cash a check, and the check has been marked insufficient funds.” Dr. King was an economic populist, an anti-war activist, as well as a classically trained theologian. Too many put emphasis on the latter, without acknowledging the former. That’s why each year, I am excited to receive the State of the Dream report from United for a Fair Economy. This organization does great work in talking about the wealth gap, and their annual foray into exploring the dream
Dr. Julianne Malveaux has looked at joblessness, homelessness, and austerity. Last year their report shared facts on the relative pay that people of color earn in the public and the private sector and concluded that austerity programs that cut government jobs disproportionately affect people of color. This year’s report focuses on the Emerging Majority, and concludes that unless policy shifts are made, the wealth gap will grow even wider than it is today. Addi-
tionally, they project that by 2042, just 30 years from now when people of color are a majority in our society, nearly 5 percent of the African American population and 2 percent of the Latino population will be in prison if current incarceration trends continue. The report’s set of policy recommendation’s includes a recommendation to end the war on drugs. Indeed, more than half of those currently incarcerated are casualties of the drug war, some with very minor offenses, and others with conditions that warrant drug treatment, not incarceration. “Economic inequality between whites and people of color will persist unless bold and intentional steps are taken to make meaningful progress towards racial equity, to sever the connection between race and poverty, and ultimately to eliminate the racial economic divide altogether,” the report says in its Executive Summary. But such bold words are belied by the growing gap, increasing poverty, the unemployment rate differential, and con-

colored, but African American people have pennies to the dollars of wealth that whites hold. There are no signs that say white or colored on executive employment, but you can count the African American CEOs in Fortune five hundred companies on one, or on a good day, maybe two hands. The signs don’t say segregation, but too many still experience it, and while few in polite company use racist expletives to describe people of African descent in this country, when a talk show host and a Congressman have the utter temerity to describe the First Lady’s body in disparaging terms, it takes me back two centuries, to echoes of the Hottentot Venus, Sarah Bartjee. The dream is certainly a work in progress, but the dream won’t work unless we do. We cannot afford to be smug, glib, or complacent. The UFE report suggests that if we don’t act now, it will get worse later. Julianne Malveaux is President of Bennett College for Women in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Chicago Crusader

Hosted by Soledad O’Brien, the documentary shared the financial struggles of Lincoln Garden members facing foreclosure, finding student financial aid and adjusting to long-term unemployment. According to CNN, the documentary also became the network’s second-highest rated program that year with 13.8 million viewers. Now in 2012, what began as a 90-minute television program has become the impetus for a year-long advocacy effort with four specific objectives: Education – information distributed through churches, barbershops, community centers; Direct Action – coordinating a series of protests in front of payday stores; Alternatives to payday loans – identifying viable alternatives available through credit unions, minority banks and other lenders; and Public policy - working with local leaders to initiate actions to restrict payday and other preda-

In the January 2012 edition of the American Bar Association’s journal, Pastor Soaries said in part, “Too many Americans find themselves in the perfect storm of diminishing economic opportunity and legal predatory financial practices that have a reverse Robin Hood effect – stealing from the poor to benefit a few voracious enterprises.” “What is needed is a national campaign that addresses the aggressive efforts of promoting payday lending and luring customers
into their web of debt”, continued Soaries. Over the past decade, the ills of payday lending have been a focus of the Center for Responsible Lending. Through a series of state-based efforts partnering with local advocates, 17 states and the District of Columbia have enacted payday reforms, saying ‘no’ to triple digit interest rates and downward spiraling debt. Additionally, federal law protects military members and their families from the typical 400 percent interest rates of payday loans. In recent years, however, the growth of new versions of smalldollar, short term loans -- Internet and bank payday loans -threaten to circumvent all of these hard-fought consumer victories. In particular, bank payday loans lead to 175 days of indebtedness for the average borrower – twice as long as the maximum length of time the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation has advised. With many banks allowing up to half of a customer’s monthly

For older borrowers already living on fixed incomes, the average bank payday loan repayment from a Social Security check was 43 percent. Senior customers are also 2.6 times more likely to have used a bank payday loan than bank customers as a whole. Even without bank payday loans, more than 13 million older adults are considered economically insecure, living on $21,800 per year or less. One-fifth of older households have annual incomes below $50,000 but report spending more than 40 percent of their income on debt payments. CRL research has shown that communities of color are particularly vulnerable to payday loans. Among the 11 Pioneer Schools that began in the fall, 71% of the 90 additional minutes have been spent focusing on core subjects, while 29% have been spent on enrichment, including physical education, art, music and other areas. “We know that our students need additional instruction time in front of a teacher in core subjects like reading, math and science,” said Brizard. “The Pioneer Schools will be the models on how we can provide our students with the high-quality education they need to become college and career ready. It is important that we obtain feedback and input from teachers and parents at these schools as we prepare for all schools in the District to implement the full school day for the 2012-13 year.” Fiske and other schools that started in September have already provided their students with an additional 85 hours of instructional time, which is the equivalent of 17 more days of instructional time, primarily focused on core subjects like reading, math and science. It is the nation’s third-largest school system.

full school day on September 26th and has used the additional 90 minutes to add an additional 30 minutes of instruction daily in each of three core academic subjects –math, science and language arts – giving students much needed additional time to deepen their understanding and excel academically. Prior to the full day, Fiske students did not receive any opportunity for physical activity and now benefit from 25 minutes of recess daily. Studies show that the more students spend with time on task for reading, math and science, the more they understand, learn and
grow academically. With a high school graduation rate of only 57% and 7.9% of 11th graders testing college ready, our children cannot afford to wait another day to get the time they need in the classroom with their teachers to boost their achievement. The groups painted and cleaned at the YMCA, the Henry Ford Powerhouse High School and Bethune School of Excellence. With his motley crew in tow, K, as Kenneth is known outside of his household, tries his hand at a little drug dealing, chica chasing and gang culture. what I say is an ode to Ice Cube’s Friday franchise and to gangster movies, such as Scarface. The characters are farfetched at first glance, but I suppose they depict what is really out there on the streets, when young men live aimlessly and look for ways to scheme and pick up girls, with no “cash, no whip (car) and no ambition.”

have a job at the grocery store, but he quit one day in anger, which also mimics what happens in society when you have uneducated young men who can’t take direction and feel it’s better to have no job than to have one where the boss is constantly in your butt. Ok, I regress, I sort of liked Anuvahood, because it was funny. If I just watched it for the laugh factor, it was a decent movie. But the plot of K trying to pretend to be a drug dealer, by selling drugs only to have Tyrone come and steal the money, while harassing the rest of the crew, is a story that I’ve seen over and over in movies. Tyrone basically plays the bad guy, previously played by Lister in the Friday franchise. There is even a scene were K gets beat up and his buddy TJ, played by Jazzie Zonzolo hovers over him, reminding him of just how much pain he sustained—the same as in one of the Friday movies. In the end K learns that crime doesn’t pay, and the neighborhood is poised to be a better place because of this hard lesson. Kenneth, played by Adam Deacon, who also wrote the movie, has also written another movie called Kidulthood. I give Deacon credit; it’s an entertaining movie with a certain demographic, with a strong cast of British talent, including Ollie Barbieri and featuring hot tunes from Tinie Tempah and Dizzee Rascal. THE BOOKWORM SEZ . . .
“Chocolate Me!” by Taye Diggs, illustrated by Shane W. Evans c.2011, Feiwel & Friends $16.99 / $18.99 Canada 40 pages All your friends are different. Have you noticed? The one who sits next to you in school has brown eyes, while your neighbor’s eyes are blue. One friend might be very tall, while the other might be very short. Their hair and their skin might be lighter, darker, or another color altogether. Your friends are all ages and sizes and there are boys and girls. They are different and you love them all. And in the new book “Chocolate Me!” by Taye Diggs, illustrated by his friend, Shane W. Evans, a little boy learns to love himself, too.
Timmy and Johnny and Mark have everyday names, just like everybody else - except the little boy on the step. His name was unique, and he longed for a common name. Mark and Timmy and Johnny had different skin, too, and they wondered if the little boy’s dark skin hurt when he washed off the dirt. Why was his skin darker, anyhow? Johnny and Mark and Timmy sometimes teased the little boy about his hair. It was curly and poufy, like a wig. Didn’t it tangle and hurt to brush it? And then there was the little boy’s nose. It was HUGE! It was nothing like Timmy’s nose. The little boy’s hair was not like Mark’s hair. His skin didn’t look like Johnny’s skin. And his super-white teeth weren’t like anybody’s! It made him sad. It made him cry. But when he told his mother why he was so sad, she said something important: his skin wasn’t just dark, it was like “velvet fudge frosting mixed in a bowl.” His hair was like cotton candy or rows of tall corn. And just seeing his white-white teeth made her smile, too. She showed the little boy a mirror. For real, he was just perfect.
Suddenly, Johnny and Timmy and Mark didn’t seem so special. They were his friends, that’s true, but they were missing something that was too sweet not to notice… Wanting to be like everybody else is a big thing when you’re a little person. But then again, so is self-acceptance and “Chocolate Me!” can help. With a charming, not-quiterhyming story, author and actor Taye Diggs – who used his own childhood as the basis for this book – tells the tale of a boy who isn’t at all like his friends, and hates it. Anybody who’s stood out from the crowd can identify with the child in this story, but kids who are keenly aware of differences will find it even more personal. I liked the good-naturedness of Diggs’ main character, despite that he’s heartbroken for being singled out. For her wisdom, I liked his mother even more. Add Shane W. Evans’ illustrations – pictures kids will want to look at again and again and again - and you’ve got a winner of a book. Meant for preschoolers, I think this book is also good for both bully and bullied because it could change their lives. For them, and for any child who’s different, “Chocolate Me!” is yummy.

Local artist honors Dr. King’s holiday through song Tenor James Hudson marked this week’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday in a way some only dream of. He also has narrated a series of documentaries that aired on NBC and CBS television. “The Easter Story” was critically acclaimed, including its presentation on “A Lamp Unto My Feet.” After the television airing, there was a follow-up story in Reader’s Digest.”
Hudson stretched his music “chops” by developing his own production company – Hudson Productions, a haven for a jazz artist, a 250-person mass choir and “other undiscovered talent” he added. His focus now however is gospel. He described music as “one of the gifts from God with the ability to transcend race, nationality, sex and political and religious
The Joffrey Ballet presents three of the worlds hottest choreographers in “Winter Fire”
The Joffrey Ballet brings to Chicago the work of three worldrenowned choreographers in “Winter Fire,” a mixed repertory program featuring two premieres and an audience favorite. The groundbreaking pieces include the U.S. Premiere of Infra by Wayne McGregor (Resident Choreographer of London’s Royal Ballet), the Company Premiere of In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated by William Forsythe (former Joffrey dancer), and the critically acclaimed After the Rain by Christopher Wheeldon (Resident Choreographer of New York City Ballet). “Winter Fire” is presented in ten performances only at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University, February 15 – 26. “Our winter program gathers the work of three contemporary choreographers who fundamentally transformed the direction of
dance,” said Joffrey Artistic Director Ashley C. Wheater. “Each work is groundbreaking in its own way, reflecting the strong voice of the individual choreographer. This trio of works offers our dancers and our audience a great opportunity for artistic growth. I am incredibly proud to share this program with the people of Chicago.” The “Winter Fire” program opens with Forsythe’s In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated, originally created for the Paris Opera Ballet in 1987. With music by Thom Willems in collaboration with Leslie Stuck, In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated is a purely abstract work that combines classical ballet lines with rapid-fire virtuosity and an air of cool detachment. The Joffrey Ballet has performed excerpts of this work before, but the winter program represents the first time the company presents the piece in its entirety. William Forsythe’s choreography has sometimes been described as a ‘deconstruction’ of ballet,” noted Wheater, “but in my opinion, In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated is firmly grounded in ballet…a modern extension of its principles. In his own words, ‘Ballet was my mother tongue in dance, so you can’t erase it from your consciousness.’
I love the architecture of his choreography: abstract, yet wrapped with humanity.” The program continues with the return of Wheeldon’s After the Rain, a 2010 Joffrey Premiere that received unanimous critical acclaim. The Joffrey Ballet is the first company outside of Wheeldon’s own to be awarded rights to perform this work in full. Set to the minimalist, classical music of Arvo Pärt, After the Rain is in two sections strikingly different in tone: the first, with dancers costumed in steel gray, is feverishly paced with bold lines and intricate lifts; the second shifts to a warmer palette and a meditative pace, evoking a tender, emotionally-resonant tone. “Christopher Wheeldon is rooted in the classical ballet tradition,” commented Wheater, “yet he brings fresh lyricism, musicality and sensuality to his choreography. He seems equally comfortable with abstraction and narrative, a dichotomy which reconciles beautifully in After the Rain.” The winter engagement is completed by the U.S. Premiere of McGregor’s sumptuous work Infra, premiered by The Royal Ballet of London in 2008. The Joffrey is the first company other than the Royal to perform this work. Infra is set to an original score by Max Richter, a mix of

mournful strings and calmly indifferent industrial sounds. The set includes a 59-foot LED screen suspended above the stage displaying walking pedestrian animations by British artist Julian Opie. Beneath it (“infra,” Latin meaning “below”), 12 dancers execute McGregor’s quick, intricate and hyper-articulate movement, displaying both the dancers’ strength and impressive flexibility. Created in the wake of the London subway bombings of 2005, the work simmers with a vibrant emotional undercurrent, conjuring a poignant sense of the constant flux and hypnotic monotony that are both intrinsic to urban life. Wheater said, “Wayne McGregor’s choreography begins with the human body, and with an understanding of its potential for movement. His dance explores the relationship of the body and the mind…and with Infra, he considers the heart, as well.” About the Choreographers Raised in New York and initially trained in Florida, William Forsythe danced with The Joffrey Ballet beginning in 1971 and later the Stuttgart Ballet, where he was appointed Resident Choreographer in 1976. Over the next seven years, he created new works for the Stuttgart ensemble and ballet com-
panies in Munich, The Ha-gue, London, Basel, Berlin, Frankfurt am Main, Paris, New York, and San Francisco. In 1984, he began a 20-year tenure as director of the Ballet Frankfurt, where he created works such as Artifact (1984), Impressing the Czar (1988), Limb’s Theorem (1990), The Loss of Small Detail (1991, in collaboration with composer Thom Willems and designer Issey Mi-yake), A L I E / N A(C)TION (1992), Eidos:Telos (1995), Endless House (1999), Kammer/Kammer (2000), and Decreation (2003). After the closure of the Ballet Frankfurt in 2004, Forsythe established a new, more independent ensemble. The Forsythe Company, founded with the support of the states of Saxony and Hesse, the cities of Dresden and Frankfurt am Main, and private sponsors, is based in Dresden and Frankfurt am Main and maintains an extensive international touring schedule. Forsythe’s most recent works are developed and performed exclusively by The For-sythe Company, while his earlier pieces are prominently featured in the repertoire of virtually every major ballet company in the world, including The Kirov Ballet, The New York City Ballet, The San Francisco Ballet, The National Ballet of Canada, England’s Royal Ballet and The Paris Opera Ballet. The author recalled that in 2009 she started sharing weekly scriptures the Holy Spirit had placed upon her heart. She took the desire to teach others to the next level by challenging her family and friends to increase their knowledge of Bible scriptures by memorizing the weekly email messages. “Little did I know that a weekly verse would begin to reach people across America nor that I would get such feedback sharing how timely they were for the people who read them,” Cole-Scott said. “God’s word has truly been a blessing to me and others as we continue to share our love for the scriptures weekly via email reaching people across the states.” One such follower of the weekly email messages is Connie Taylor. In describing her experience with the weekly emails and the daily devotional in book form Taylor stated, “I looked forward to each new weekly scripture when it was online. EDUCATION Community leaders and organizations urge Express Scripts to reach agreement with Walgreens Eleven community leaders, health care professionals, and people of faith from urban neighborhoods and inner-cities in Illinois joined others from across the country today, urging Express Scripts to get back to the negotiating table with Walgreens and allow the nation’s largest pharmacy chain to return to its’ network. As of January 1, Express Scripts stopped providing in-network coverage for prescriptions filled at Walgreens and Duane Reade pharmacies. The local leaders and groups join more than 130 others that urged Express Scripts to come to an agreement before December 31, 2011, in order to avoid patient disruption. Now that Ex-

communities at the forefront of this issue because prolonging the loss of network access to the critical pharmacy services Walgreens provides will be devastating to our communities,” said Harry Alford, President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Black Chamber of Commerce. “Walgreens has been committed to serving urban neighborhoods since its founding 110 years ago and continues to serve communities throughout the United States where quality health care services are scarce. The fact is actually 63 percent of all Americans, 75 percent of African Americans, and 78 percent of Latinos are living within 3 miles of a Walgreens store.” In a letter to Express Scripts, the group outlined the benefits provided by Walgreens that are no longer available with full network coverage to Express Scripts members as of January 1. “In many of our neighborhoods, Walgreens serves as a stabilizing influence and has helped draw other businesses into our communities. Walgreens is a valued community partner,” the letter states. “Walgreens is focused on high-quality affordable and accessible traditional pharmacy services, as well as immunization services, and in some locations ... professional walk-in health care centers are located in Walgreens pharmacy stores.” Express Scripts, Inc. is a phar-

This makes no sense and goes to the heart of the First Amendment,” Frank told the Crusader. “The mayor is trampling on the free speech and he should be ashamed of himself.” Ald. Leslie Hairston (5thWard) said by keeping the parks and beaches closed until 6 a.m. instead of its current time of 4 a.m. it would have regular joggers on the sideline and put at an inconvenience. A parking ban downtown also would be in place, which city officials said is necessary. “From international boxing tournaments, former Olympic Games consideration to election night in Grant Park, the Office of Emergency Management and Communications is always planning, coordinating and developing precautionary measures to preserve the

ICCBC is extremely grateful to everyone that is joining us today to help us turn that trend around in order to improve the quality of and lengthen the lives of so many individuals,” said Ann McKanna of Heartland Blood Centers and ICCBC President. Dr. Sally Campbell-Lee, Director of Transfusion Medicine for the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System, explained why compatibility is so important. “Many sickle cell pa-
tients need monthly transfusions. However, the more often someone is transfused, the more likely it is their immune system can cause a reaction against the donor’s red blood cells. These reactions are prevented by extended matching of the patient’s blood type with the donor’s blood type. Just as with a bone marrow or other organ transplant, the best extended matches are often found from donors who are of the same ethnic group as the patient. This means for most sickle cell patients, their best transfusion matches are found among African American donors. African American blood donors have a tremendous impact, especially for patients who are from their community.” “Because African American blood traits are such a “tough match” when it comes to transfusions, it is important that we, as public officials, are able to get the message out that by not donating blood, we as African Americans, are putting each other at risk. With the start of 2012, I ask that becoming a regular blood donor is a New Year’s resolution you stick with, in order to save lives in our community,” said Congressman Danny Davis, of the 7th Congressional District. State Representative Will Davis (D-Homewood) explained how becoming a ‘regular donor’ is key because blood has a shelf life of only 42 days. “As Chairman of the Illinois General Assembly’s
