Trump threatens federal intervention in Chicago President wants city to get tougher on shootings and murders Crusader Staff report With 2017 off to an even deadlier start than 2016, on Tuesday, President Donald Trump threatened federal intervention if the city doesn’t get tougher on shootings and murders that continue to rock neighborhoods on the South and West Side of Chicago. After news reports concerning Chicago’s latest shooting statistics surfaced, Trump
Black Press waits on Trump, page 3 tweeted Tuesday night that he will “send in the Feds!” if the city “doesn’t fix the horrible ‘carnage’ going on.” Civil rights leader Rev. Jesse L. Jackson tweeted in response saying, “We need a plan, not a threat. We need jobs, not jails.” In a recent interview on WTTW-Ch. 11, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said federal agencies, including the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives, al-
ready help the city, but more could be done. While Trump’s latest threat has drawn criticism and added pressure for Chicago Police Department Superintendent Eddie Johnson, Chicago has once again been placed in the national spotlight as shootings climb along with the mild winter weather, Since campaigning for the White House, Trump has been an outspoken critic of crime in Chicago, but his latest threat may inflame tensions in a city where anger and distrust of
the Chicago Police Department have intensified since the video of the 2014 brutal killing of Laquan McDonald by a Chicago policeman was released in 2015. The threat is the latest chapter of souring relations between Trump and a city that has opposed the billionaire’s controversial views since he ran for the nation’s highest office. Trump’s tweet of “228 shootings in 2017 with 42 killings (up 24% from 2016)” re(Continued on page 3)
Uber fined $20 Million By J. Coyden Palmer Uber, the popular ride-sharing service, was hit with a huge fine last week by the Federal Trade Commission for lying to potential drivers about how much money they can make, and how affordable its vehicle financing plans were. FTC officials and Uber negotiated the settlement. Last year, local Alderman Anthony Beale (9th)
held hearings into the business practices of the popular company, which is hurting the taxi industry nationwide, according to the alderman. “I’ve had concerns about this company for a while because they were unwilling to release their data to us,” Beale told the Chicago Crusader at the beginning of January. “My main concern was safety. I want people to know who they are getting into a vehicle with, and if the vehicle is safe and if the person is who they say they are. My proposed ordinance would have made all ride-sharing drivers go through the same procedures as taxi and other livery drivers.” But those who use the service, whether to make a living or for affordable transportation, say that without the service of Uber and its rival company Lyft, many people, especially those who live in poorer areas, would be left out in the (Continued on page 3)
BLACK MALES AT the Juvenile Temporary Detention Center in Chicago struggle more than their White and Hispanic counterparts according to a Northwestern University study.
A TOUGH ROAD TO REDEMPTION Cook County Juvenile Summit shows hardships Black males face
By Erick Johnson The room grew silent when nine teenagers entered. Eight were boys, one was a girl. Their ages ranged from 15-17; they looked like ordinary kids from good backgrounds. They were smart and articulate. Somehow, they had gotten into trouble and strayed from a script that most parents have for their children. Under the layers of scars they bore, were the souls of youth who had not given up dreaming of a better life. After an hour of networking, speeches and more speeches, the time came for a room packed full of pastors, community leaders, and residents to hear about the lives of teenagers who had spent time at the Juvenile Detention Center after getting into trouble. They were the youngest speakers at a juvenile summit held at the Cook County Temporary Detention Center on January 19, on
the Near West Side. Called Change Strategies: Decreasing Violence in The Chicagoland Area, the summit was organized by Circuit Court of Cook County Chief Judge Timothy Evans. The three-hour conference included speeches from pastors, prosecutors, and law enforcement officers who gave insight on Chicago’s nationally reported crime problem. “I believe that one way to prevent violence is to improve the family structure,” said John Hannah, pastor of New Life Covenant Church and one the summit’s keynote speakers. “Many of these youth grow up with no strong male figure.” But it was the testimonies of kids who weren’t yet old enough to drive that riveted everyone in the room. With the exception of one, most of them had earned their way to Level Four as detainees: they had become leaders and role models whose behavior was a
model for others to follow. With the dozens of cell phones and television cameras turned off to protect their identities, the teenagers opened up to ABC 7 WLS Reporter Terrell Brown. He moderated a conversation that sometimes pushed the legal limits (Continued on page 2)

Pfleger rips Trump, press secretary over the big lie Fears Trump’s answer to violence By Chinta Strausberg Fed up over the continued debate over the size of President Donald Trump’s inaugural crowd, versus attendance at President Barack Obama’s 2009 inauguration, Father Michael L. Pfleger on Sunday said it’s not only time out for lying, but it’s also time for Black genocide to end as well. Pfleger called out White House press secretary Sean Spicer, who accused the media of lying about the inauguration’s small crowd size. Spicer was livid when the media visually compared President Barack Obama’s 2009 inauguration crowd size to Trump’s. The visual showed Obama had more people attending his inauguration. An outraged Spicer said Saturday in a press statement “The media was engaged in false reporting…. this was irresponsible and reckless.” The dispute was reminiscent of 1995 when Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan was engaged in a media war over the number of people attending the Million
Man March in D.C. Farrakhan’s people said two million people attended the historic event. Mainstream media contended that there were much fewer than that. Turning to a different topic, Father Pfleger said he fears any involvement of Trump coming to Chicago to deal with the violence, because he has indicated that he would send in the military to quell such violence. “We don’t need the military,” said Pfleger. “What we do need are resources.” Pfleger praised the thousands of women who marched against the Trump administration the day following his inauguration. “Go ahead, ladies. Stand up and let them know we ain’t going no where…drawing the line (and saying) not on my watch.” Referring to the past weekend’s violence in Chicago, Pfleger said “we can’t turn a deaf ear and blind eye to the continued escalation of violence. In less than 24-hours three killed and 23 shot, more than one an hour shot. We have to be just as angry as we are about Washington, D.C.” “As we cover Trump’s lies, and the massive turn out of marches, why are we silent about a bloody weekend in Chicago,” Pfleger
FATHER MICHAEL PFLEGER calls out Trump’s press secretary Sean Spicer, who was accused of lying about his boss’ inauguration attendance numbers at the first White House press conference. (Photo by Chinta Strausberg) said. With such turbulence, both physical and governmentally, he said, there is a danger of losing hope. “An enemy always desires us to lose hope. It’s a tactic of the devil to try to make us lose hope because once you lose hope, you ain’t got nothing …. “When you put your hope in
people, you will be disappointed,” Pfleger said, including putting your hope in family and friends. “When you put your hope in places, or in people or in things, you can expect to be disappointed because everything else will fall except God….” Pfleger led a song, “Trouble doesn’t last always” and asked the
church to put their hands on their self and declare, “I am equipped and created to handle the turbulence in my personal life and in the world in which I live. I will overcome. I am standing on the rock, and when the winds have finished blowing and the sands have settled down, I’ll still be standing.”
A TOUGH ROAD TO REDEMPTION would be of value. “A lot of us in here have a common theme: our fathers weren’t around, so we need a male figure (sic) in our lives to teach us right from wrong.” Chief Judge Evans called for reforms in the juvenile justice system. “We cannot arrest our way out of these problems,” he said. “We cannot prosecute our way out of these problems. We cannot imprison our way out of these problems. We have to work together.”
“What we’re trying to do is put a face on this issue of violence so the public can see that these young people are not people simply to be thrown away. They’re our kids,” Evans said. According to a recent study by Northwestern University, young Black men who enter juvenile detention often lead unsuccessful adult lives plagued by incarceration, unemployment and other woes. Researchers say Black men provide the most drastic statistics among ethnic groups. The study, called the Northwestern Juvenile Project, conducted research at the Juvenile Temporary Detention Center, where Black youth often struggle more than their white and Hispanic counterparts. The Juvenile Temporary Detention Center provides temporary secure housing for youth ages 10 through 16 years who are waiting for their cases to be decided by the Juvenile Division of the Cook County Courts. The Center also provides care for youth who have been transferred from Juvenile Court jurisdiction to Criminal Court. These youths would otherwise be incarcerated with adults in the County jail. The project for years followed some 1,800 people who entered the Detention Center in the late 1990s. As part of the study, researchers interviewed juveniles face to face periodically. Researchers examined their TEENAGERS LISTEN DURING a class at Cook County’s Juvenile Temporary Detention employment history, educational Center. achievement, family life, housing,
(Continued from page 1) of an interview with a juvenile. Nigel was perhaps the most outspoken teen in the group. “Their first impression is when they stop and see us, they instigate the talking trash to us,” Nigel said. “And I’m like, ‘Why is that your first instinct when you all see us? Why don’t you all say ‘Hello. How you all doing? Is (sic) you all safe out here?’ They don’t ask those questions. They just look at us like thugs.”

The teenagers were asked how the available juvenile programs can keep young men and women out of trouble. The only girl in the group, Katrina, suggested more access to sports programs. “Sometimes sports is a way people get out of trouble and it helps them get away from problems and violence and being hurt. I think we need that,” she said. Another teen, Santino, suggested that more mentoring programs

substance use, and any further arrests, among other topics. According to the study, after 12 years only 1 in 5 males and 1 in 2 females had attained “positive outcomes” in more than half of the areas of their lives that researchers studied. And only half of the participants obtained a high school diploma or its equivalent, a rate significantly lower than that of the general population. One out of five males was working full time or in school. Black men lagged behind other study participants in numerous categories. For example, white male participants had more than five times better odds of being in school or employed full time, than Black males, after 12 years. As of May 2015, Evans’ department began supervising the operations of the JTDC, located at 1100 S. Hamilton Ave. Evans said the JTDC once had as many as 800 youth in the facility, but the number is down to 230. Evans called for “restorative justice,” a process whereby juvenile offenders who complete work assigned by a judge can have their records expunged. “We believe restorative justice is a way to solve these problems, Evans said. “As they come back to the community, they come back as accomplished citizens,” Evans said. “Not as a terrorist or somebody you need to be afraid of.”

Wait begins for Trump’s promised interview with Black Press By Erick Johnson With the celebrations over and the White House move-in complete, the clock has begun ticking as the Black Press waits for a promised interview with President Donald Trump. It will be the first major one-onone Black Press interview with the new president since Trump was sworn into office January 20. It will also be a major departure from his predecessor, former President Barack Obama, who despite being the nation’s first Black president, was often criticized for not granting interviews
with the Black Press. Before Trump officially became America’s 45th president, Omarosa Manigault, Director of Communications in the Office of Public Liaison for the Trump administration, promised the first Black Press interview with President Trump. Benjamin Chavis, president and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) will interview Trump once a date has been set. NNPA represents 200 historic Black newspapers nationwide, including the Chicago Crusader. According to the Black weekly,
Uber fined $20 Million (Continued from page 1) cold. Customers and drivers say the ride-sharing industry exists because traditional cab companies often ignored them, showed up in an untimely fashion, or had rude drivers. However, FTC officials say the San Francisco based company, which now has a global business platform, has not been honest with the public. “Many consumers sign up to drive for Uber, but they shouldn’t be taken for a ride about their earnings potential or the cost of financing a car through Uber,” said Jessica Rich, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection. “This settlement will put millions of dollars back in Uber drivers’ pockets.” Beale added he does not believe the company’s claims that their drivers serve parts of the city where hailing a cab is nearly impossible. Beale said while Uber has a lot of drivers on the South and West Sides, he believes most of those drivers make their money at the airport, downtown, or picking up users on the North Side. “I think they may pick up somebody in the hood when they are starting out their day or returning home, but not spending most of their driving hours in these depressed areas as they claim,” Beale said. Upon hearing the FTC had levied a fine, Beale issued the following statement: “It‘s unfortunate the FTC had to levy a fine against Uber to call them out on their deceptive ride-sharing practices which we’ve called attention to in the past. I guess when a company is as interested as Uber in deploying fleets of self-driving vehicles that it wishes will eliminate any need for human drivers, this should come as no surprise. But hopefully this action will force Uber to see the error of their ways and force them to start making honest and transparent statements to its drivers about the reality of what drivers can expect to earn.” The FTC alleges that Uber claimed on its website that UberX drivers’ annual median income was more than $90,000 in New York and over $74,000 in San Francisco. The FTC alleges, however, that drivers’ annual median income was actually $61,000 www.chicagocrusader.com
in New York and $53,000 in San Francisco. In all, less than 10 percent of all drivers in those cities earned the yearly income Uber touted. The FTC also alleges that Uber made high hourly earnings claims in job listings, including on Craigslist, but that the typical Uber driver failed to earn those advertised hourly amounts in various cities. In addition to imposing a $20 million judgment against Uber, the stipulated order prohibits the company from misrepresenting drivers’ earnings and auto finance and lease terms. The order also bars Uber from making false, misleading, or unsubstantiated representations about drivers’ income; programs offering or advertising vehicles or vehicle financing or leasing; and the terms and conditions of any vehicle financing or leasing. Uber has claimed there was a discrepancy between how it and the government calculated earnings. The company also defended itself regarding its lending practices for drivers with bad credit, claiming it could get anyone a leased vehicle to drive regardless of credit history. But federal investigators say the fees for leased vehicles were expensive and Uber had no oversight over the terms of those leases, which were arranged through third-party sub prime auto companies. “We’ve made many improvements to the driver experience over the last year and will continue to focus on ensuring that Uber is the best option for anyone looking to earn money on their own schedule,” read a statement from Uber. Unlike taxi drivers, who have unions, drivers for ride sharing companies are independent contractors and often have no one to turn to when they are wronged, said Jim Conigliaro, founder of the US Independent Drivers Guild, based out of New York. He said with the dynamic of the transportation industry changing because of Uber, drivers must be aware of the terms and make informed decisions. “The reality of being a ride-sharing driver is a far cry from the rosy picture these apps describe and it is encouraging to see the FTC take them to task and refund drivers,” Conigliaro said. “Drivers deserve the fair pay they were promised.”
Dr. Benjamin Chavis The Washington Informer, Manigault’s promise of the interview was disclosed during a closed-door meeting she had with Chavis and the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) representatives in January. During the meeting held at the American Enterprise Institute, a think tank in Washington, D.C., Manigault made the promise after a NABJ representative “stressed the importance of Black reporters interfacing with the president,” according to the Informer. No member of the working press was allowed in the meeting, billed as a “listening session” with Manigault and senior members of Trump’s transition team, according to the Informer. However, the Informer said the meeting drew dozens of
leaders from 30 nonpartisan and nonprofit organizations. The Informer did not state a specific date for the interview with Chavis, who was also mum on details but provided a general statement to the newspaper. “2017 marks the 190th year of the Black Press in America. [Our] tradition has been to engage whoever is in the White House on behalf of Black America. There are issues that affect our quality of life and we cannot afford to be excluded from the position and the power that would impact the quality of life of Blacks,” Chavis said. The Black Press has become a critical medium for Black America as Trump’s administration threatens to reverse advances made in recent
years on civil rights, police brutality and health care. The presidential interview would also be a significant step for Trump to repair relations with the Black community after his divisive campaign, and his recent social media attack directed at civil rights leader and Congressman, John Lewis. During his race for president, Trump promised to address the high crime rate in Black communities like Chicago. He also pledged to help rebuild inner cities. The Black Press will be invaluable in reporting on whether or not he does so. While Trump continues to have a complicated relationship with the mainstream media organizations, he has no connection at all to the Black Press. No Black newspaper interviewed him during his presidential campaign and none are qualified to have correspondents in the White House because they are weekly publications and not daily newspapers. However, Trump’s anticipated interview with the Black Press will be a significant improvement over Obama’s relationship with Black newspaper publishers and journalists. While Obama granted interviews with Black Enterprise, BET, the Reverend Al Sharpton, and Joe Madison, for eight years he did not speak one-on-one with Black newspapers which have been operating far longer than broadcast media. Nationally syndicated journalist George C. Curry, who died last year, unsuccessfully requested several interviews with Obama but was never granted one. Many Black journalists still remember a press conference where four journalists representing Black newspapers sat in the front row of a White House press conference where they were not called on by then President Obama.
Trump threatens federal intervention (Continued from page 1) ferred to the latest data compiled by the Chicago Tribune. While Trump may threaten Chicago with federal intervention, a 139-year-old federal law known as the Posse Comitatus Act prohibits deployment of federal troops in civil law enforcement. The recent threat echoes Trump’s past messages about crime and gun violence that he says are destroying inner cities throughout the country. During his inaugural address on Jan. 20, Trump said that crime, gangs and drugs that have stolen too many lives and robbed our country of much unrealized potential. “This American carnage stops right here and right now.” In a television interview in September, Trump said that Chicago

Eddie Johnson “is out of control” and that police officers should use “stop-and-frisk” tactics to reduce the violence. He went on to say “stop-and-frisk tactics worked incredibly well in New York.” However, a federal judge
ruled the practice unconstitutional and said the practice violated the 4th Amendment prohibiting unreasonable searches. In 2014, “stop-and-frisk” tactics were used in Chicago. Police records show 250,000 people were stopped and searched without a reason. The Chicago Police Department ended the practice after the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a lawsuit, claiming “stop-and-frisk” tactics were unconstitutional. Under a legal agreement with the ACLU, a new Chicago Police Department order required supervisors to review contact cards and to correct officers who failed to give legal justification for stops. The agreement caused an 84 percent drop in street stops.

HISTORIC WOMEN’S MARCH The United States has a new President: Donald J. Trump. He is one of the most controversial and unorthodox individuals to lead this nation and this fact has not gone unnoticed. He has threatened to undo almost every progressive policy signed into law during the Obama administration. Because of his ascent to power, there was a GINORMOUS Women’s March on Washington, which actually took place in many cities around the world, the day after the inauguration. The latest estimate is that there were probably 3 million women worldwide who marched to send a message to the Trump administration. The messages varied. Some were concerned about Trump’s proposed changes to the Affordable Care Act, Medicare, Medicaid, mortgage assistance to low income people, LGBT rights, and other policy issues. Others were concerned about the way President Trump has allegedly treated women. There were numerous other concerns, and the plethora of creative signs about them carried during the march demonstrated the creativity of the human spirit. The marchers clogged up streets in many areas, and even women in faraway places like Iceland joined the party. The march’s participation far exceeded the expectations of the organizers. Numerous celebrities spoke at events including Angela Davis, Janelle Monae, Madonna, Alicia Keys, Gloria Steinem, Michael Moore, Ashley Judd, and many others. Moreover, the marches were reported as being very orderly. Men and children also participated in the marches. One unusual aspect of the march was the participation by Black Lives Matter and other African American groups. Previous to now, there have always been complaints from Black women that the women’s movement ignored the plight of women of color. This time, Black women were a major part of the event. Now that women have demonstrated that they are a force to be reckoned with, the question remains…what now? Where do we go from here? The euphoria exhibited by march participants can be translated into momentum around issues that affect us all. Women can ignite a renaissance of resistance. But resistance to what? Basically, anything that impacts women, who represent onehalf of the Earth’s population, affects everyone. The changes that we are bracing for in the United States as a result of the new presidential administration will touch everyone in America in one way or another. With women at the vanguard, a new day can actually become a reality. Americans are in for a very interesting ride. Major changes are facing us. Because of this, whatever benefits the majority of people should be enthusiastically embraced. And like many other situations that Americans have faced, Black Americans stand to be doubly impacted. Yes, these times may be troubling and uncertain, but some of the uncertainty can be erased by deliberate action on the part of the collective. This is a time when the seven principles, the Nguzo Saba, should seriously be implemented. Now more than ever, we need Umoja –Unity; Kujichagulia -Self-Determination; Ujima - Collective Work and Responsibility; Ujamaa - Cooperative Economics; Nia – Purpose; Kuumba - Creativity and Imani - Faith. With that said, the Black women who took part in the Women’s March on Washington, wherever they may reside, need to inject into a post-march agenda these principles, and apply them to the Black community. They should also reach out to Black men and others who are ready to work in coalition to oppose the looming threats facing us as a result of an electorate gone wild enough to elect someone to office who is determined to set us back to previous conditions. We must remember that we, the electorate, outnumber those who are in the seats of power. Our vote and civic participation can make all of the difference in what happens to us. It is time for our community to change, and we are faced with a great opportunity to change things so that the community benefits. We have only to make the decision to do this. A luta continua.
I read a story recently about something Rush Medical Center is doing that I think all hospitals in Chicago should try to replicate. We all know that hunger and homelessness are ongoing problems in the city, and the country. Rush is addressing the hunger part by donating its extra food to a homeless shelter. In doing so, the West Side facility is making a big dent in the problem of a certain segment not having enough healthy food, much less food. It seems someone would have thought of this kind of program long before now, but apparently they didn’t. If they did, then they kept it under wraps. I have to believe that every hospital, regardless of size has food that gets prepared but not necessarily delivered to patients, staff or the doctors. Rush partnered with a nonprofit called Franciscan Outreach. That partnership saw more than 600 healthy meals packaged and delivered in the first two weeks of the program. Think about it for a minute. If Northwestern Memorial, Mt. Sinai, the University of Chicago Medical Center, and a smaller hospital such as Mercy were to follow the Rush lead more than 1,000 healthy meals could be delivered every two weeks to those in need. Besides feeding the

hungry, this sort of program also reduces food waste, which in my opinion is as close to a sin as one can get. I think Rush is to be applauded for thinking of someone besides themselves, and not doing things the easy way. There is no doubt it took more than a memo to get this program up and running. It also seems it is a plus for hospital employees who volunteer to help. They can feel good about what they are doing. They also see where their work goes, not like kicking in a few bucks to a non-profit and having no idea how their donation actually works, The idea for this kind of program didn’t originate with Rush. It was developed by the Feeding America organization. That operation surveyed hospitals and found that fewer than 35 of the 300 nationwide had a food donation program. Now that Rush has pretty much perfected the process it seems it would be a breeze for other hospitals to follow. We all know the problem with hunger has been talked about, and talked about for decades and very little has been done. This is the first time a feasible program has been presented. Hospitals will always have patients, which means they will always have food. All hospitals, no doubt have food waste. If that issue can be reduced or eliminated it can make a huge difference in so many lives. Pat Cooper

Just what was the Women’s March About? Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford First, they called it “Women’s March on Washington” but that was a very big understatement or misnomer. There were millions of women marching in DC, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Sydney Australia, Denver, London, and various other cities throughout the free world. It was very orchestrated and successfully caught the attention of everyone. The day before was the Inauguration ceremonies of our 45th President, Donald J. Trump. There was an attempt to break up the marching ceremony by a pack of about 1,000 goons. Two hundred and sixteen of them were arrested for “Felony Rioting” which carries a sentence of 10 years. They didn’t achieve their goal and I certainly appreciated the way the DC police department handled the situation. The size of the DC venue was the largest of the marches and rivaled the size of the Inauguration. Regardless of which venue, all the marches by the Million Women March (correct description) were impressive and well-coordinated. Many of the marchers, which were about 90 percent fe-
Harry C. Alford male and perhaps 10 percent Black, carried descriptive and sometimes vulgar signs which they dropped in front of the new Trump Tower Hotel after the march. The overall theme was rotating: Abortion, abusive behavior by males, racism, misogyny, civil rights, rape, and immigration to name a few. Most of the speakers were
celebrities. Most were passionate and some were vulgar. The most extreme was Madonna who suggested, “blowing up the White House” which will probably get her an interview with the Secret Service. I think the best and most convincing was Alicia Keys. The DC marchers came into the city via 1,800 buses. That got me to wondering. Just who is paying for all of this? There must be millions of dollars involved. I assume that the bank roller must be that culprit named George Soros who has supported unrest and rebellion in the past. I was right! This guy funded 50 various groups to participate in this massive and multi-venue event. One of them was our traditional NAACP. The cost is at least $90 million dollars per Fox News. This must be his biggest campaign since Move On.org. Some are saying that this is the birth of “The Tea Party of the Left.” I disagree with that. The Tea Party was orderly and pushed very conservative issues in an orderly manner. These guys border on extremism. The filmmaker, Michael Moore stated that they were going to chase out “old school and weak democrats and
create a new bolder party.” Now that is threatening. Soros will be the biggest threat. This guy is a cold-hearted disrupter who loves to meddle in political arenas – the size of nations. He carries the nickname, “The man who broke the Bank of England.” He got that by “short selling” $10 billion worth of Pound Sterling and caused a panic. In the end, he pocketed a profit of over $1 billion. This is how he makes his money – Currency Speculation. He has replicated that in Southeast Asia. Malaysia is still cringing for a similar act done there by Mr. Soros. In 2005, he was convicted in France of Insider Trading and was fined over a million dollars. He paid it and kept on going. He wants to present an image of civil rights, women’s rights, Black Lives Matter and so on. The essential point is he wants unrest and division in America and anywhere else. He has the Hollywood celebrities duped into thinking he is quite a Democratic supporter. It is far worse and creepier. This is starting to remind me of the 1960’s. This “new, bolder democratic party” is going to cause trouble for both democrats and
republicans. I pray that we do not have to go through riots, burnings, and deaths. What we need are leaders who can unite and set examples of peaceful progress and a healthier society. I worry about assassinations and war. If that happens Soros would probably figure out how to stir it up and make some money – like Ferguson, Baltimore, etc. The next big march in DC is from the conservative “bent”. It will be the Pro-Life March. It is expected to be another huge event. I wonder if the NAACP will attend this. After all, a huge portion of abortions come from the Black communities. Couldn’t we adopt these unwanted children instead of taking away their lives? It is heartless! I protect a woman’s right to choose but there are many alternatives. There must be a million families who would love to adopt an unwanted child. Maybe our government could fund a network of adoption services. They do it for abortion. Mr. Alford is the co–founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce®. Website: www.nationalbcc.org Email: halford@nationalbcc.org
An Open Letter To President Donald Trump Part I of II Dear Mr. President, Congratulations on becoming the 45th President of the United States. You have vanquished all competition for this office and that was no small feat. Barack Obama, his administration, and your presidential opponents are now in the past, with their legacy yet to be determined by history while yours is yet to be to be initiated. No criticism, nor personal bashing of your past opponents, will enhance your performance as the POTUS. Barack Obama has established his presidential legacy and you must work on establishing yours. You will be measured after your tenure as to what you do, rather than what you say. When Barack Obama took the oath of office in 2009, the United States was on the brink of a great depression. On the night of his inauguration 15 members of your party met in the Caucus room restaurant in the nation’s capitol and pledged to thwart his every proposal or initiative, to insure he was a one-term president. In spite of these vicious roadblocks and attacks on his political acumen, he managed to accomplish many things. Winning a second term in office spoke well of his governing
prowess. The myriad of legislative accomplishments by Barack Obama in the face of constant and vicious opposition is nothing short of a miracle. Your negative and offensive campaign rhetoric should be put aside and you should move on to govern all US citizens evenhandedly under the law. You are in charge now and the people of the world will be directly affected by your words and actions. The American voters who put you in office represent a fraction of the world’s population who will be looking to you for leadership and will be affected by your presidency. Some indisputable facts about your campaign and subsequent election: You ran the most negative, vulgar, and divisive election campaign in the history of the nation. As presidentelect, you took office with the lowest approval rating of all U.S. presidents. Your inauguration had the lowest attendance of all U.S. inaugurations. The Women’s March on Washington attracted over 300,000 more participants than did your inauguration. Your inauguration speech was rejected by the general public because it was too divisive. You make public statements that have no basis in fact. You claim 1.5 million attendees at your inauguration but facts suggest it was less than 250,000. You claim your face appeared on the front cover of Time magazine 13 times, more than any
www.chicagocrusader.coM
Walter Smith president in history. That was not true; the distinction belongs to Richard Nixon. You appeared on the cover 10 times Your election is being questioned by people around the world, as witnessed by the protest marches on January 21, 2017. Your vindictive nature is driving you to destroy the legacy of the nation’s Black president, Barack Obama, to placate your failure to de-legitimize him as a U.S. citizen and an intellectual scholar. Barack Obama signed legislation for humane reasons such as health care, home buying assistance, protection for undocumented immigrants, climate control, and a host of

others, which you have pledged to reverse. As to Russian president Vladimir Putin, America’s military might, NATO, and our various allies around the world are the only deterrent to Russia’s worldwide aggression. Russia’s ultimate goal is to become the single most powerful nation on earth. When you consider national security and U.S. Armed Forces, you’re not only talking about Americans of European descent, its about all American citizens, this reservoir of human warriors from every corner of the earth. America is home for all of us. Mr. Trump, your campaign rhetoric was like none other in U.S. political history. Your campaign slogan was to “Make America Great Again.” I am an 82-year-old Black man who has never seen America greater than it is today. “Great Again” depends on what “great” period you’re referring to. I’m not sure I would like to see any period in my political or civic life recreated. “Again” implies returning to some past state. I was born in the decade of the 30s when my parents who resided in the state of South Carolina were denied an education and prohibited from voting by intimidation, poll taxes, and literacy tests. I never want to see those days “Again.” In the decade of the 40s, all public facilities were separate and unequal.
We had “White” and “Colored” water fountains. Our paid bus fare did not entitle us to a seat. All printed material used in our classrooms were handed down from local “white” schools. There were no “colored” elected officials. I never want to see those days “Again.” The decade of the 50s saw the beginning of the “Civil Rights” movement, with Rosa Parks refusing to give up her seat on the bus to a white man, and the Brown vs Board of Education decision. Southern Democrats created the “Southern Manifesto” which encouraged resistance to any and all legislation designed to benefit “Colored” people. Protesters, and civil disobedience were met with deadly force by local police departments with attack dogs and high powered fire hoses. Fourteen-year-old Emmit Till was taken from his grandfather’s home in the middle of the night by white men, and murdered for calling a white woman “baby.” My uncle, McKeithian Smith, was savagely beaten by six Darlington, SC, policemen simply for standing his ground against rabid racism and unbridled bigotry. I never want to see those days “Again. Walter Smith Publisher, New York Beacon
Mr. Smith concludes his letter in next week’s issue.

Dr. Woodson and African American History Month Dr. Conrad Worrill, Professor Emeritus, Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS). New office location is at 1809 E. 71st Street, Chicago, Illinois, 60649, 773-592-2598. Email:cwworrill@neiu.edu Website: www.drconradworrill.com
Dr. Conrad Worrill The African Centered Education Movement has brought a new meaning to the annual African American History Month celebra-
tions that have become so popular. That new meaning of African Centered thought, as defined by Dr. Wade Nobles, “is nothing more than a term categorizing a quality of thought and practice which is rooted in the cultural image and interest of African people and which represents and reflects the life experiences, history and traditions of African people as the center of analyses.” With this definition it is clear that we must study the liberation of African people. Dr. Nobles further states that African Centered thought is, “the intellectual and philosophical foundations upon which African people should create their own scientific criterion for authenticating human reality.” Through the African Centered Education Movement, African American History Month has now become the catalyst for the intense study of Africa and the history of African people throughout the world 365 days a year. We must pay particular attention in our studies to the history of the Reparations Movement. Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who founded in February of 1926 what at that time was called “Negro History Week,” would indeed be inspired by the continuing discussion and debate over the infusion of the contributions
of African people in all subjects. Dr. Woodson was deeply concerned that the contributions of African people to this society and the world were not given their proper recognition. Dr. Woodson’s great book The Miseducation of the Negro, written in 1933, described in the first chapter titled, “The Seat of the Trouble,” the essence of what the African Centered Curriculum Movement is battling against today— 84 years later. Dr. Woodson explained that, “Of the hundreds of Negro high schools recently examined (1933) by an expert in the United States Bureau of Education only eighteen offer a course taking up the history of the Negro, and in most of the Negro colleges and universities where the Negro is thought of, the race is studied only as a problem or dismissed as of little consequence.” Continuing on, Dr. Woodson gave an example of, “an officer of a Negro university, thinking that an additional course on the Negro should be given there, called upon a Negro Doctor of Philosophy on the faculty to offer such work. He promptly informed the officer that he knew nothing about the Negro. He did not go to school to waste his time that way. He went to be educated in a system which dismissed the Negro as a nonentity.” Obviously, since the writing of this great book, we have come a long way in our battle against challenging the
white supremacy foundation of the American public school curriculum. However, we still have a long way to go! The Black Movement of the 1960s gave us an impetus to reexamine our history and its impact on this country and the world. This movement brought on renewed interest, on the part of our people, to study our history. We moved from the use of the term “Negro” in referring to ourselves and began to use “Black” as the more appropriate way to describe who we are. We went from Black History Week to Black History Month. In fact, some of us began to refer to the month of February as Black Liberation Month. It was through the movement of the 1960s, particularly the Black Power Phase that we began to re-identify with our homeland— Africa, and the interconnection of African people throughout the world. The Black student movement of the 1960s sparked demands for courses in Black Studies that led the famous strike at San Francisco State University. After a long battle with the administration at the university, the students finally won a victory for the first Black Studies Program to be established at an American college or university. As a result, a movement for Black Studies erupted all over America and stimulated at the elementary and secondary levels demands from courses dealing
with Black History. As we have come full circle today in our general acceptance of being African People, whose ancestral homeland is Africa, we are also beginning to recognize that African American History Month celebrations and activities are great, but the contributions of African people must be emphasized throughout the year. There is no question that the setting aside of the month of February, as an extension of Dr. Woodson’s original idea of “Negro History Week” is something that we need to continue to support and institutionalize vigorously. However, we are quite clear that the real meaning of African American History Month in this era, is to take the spirit from all the celebrations, great speeches, great entertainment and festive events to establish as a major agenda item in our movement, the serious study of the contributions of African people 365 days a year. The basis of the current African Centered Education Movement, whose objective is to take control of the education of African people in America as we struggle to insure that the truth is taught in all institutions, in our communities and particularly in our schools. We must take the spirit of African American History Month to another level. Our history must be studied throughout the year!
WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE ECONOMY? By Julianne Malveaux The economic philosophies of Democrats and Republicans are drastically different. While neither party is interested in dismantling the predatory capitalism that extracts surplus value from workers, Republicans are more interested in reinforcing predatory capitalism and “free markets,” while Democrats are more interested in ameliorating the effects of predatory capitalism and regulating markets in ways that produce somewhat more equitable results than so-called free markets. Democrats are more likely to protect and support workers, while Republicans are more likely to oppress them. Thus, many Democrats have advocated for an increased minimum wage, while Republicans have opposed it. There are generalizations here. Conservative Democrats are likely to be supportive of Republican “free market” rhetoric. Once upon a time there were liberal Republicans (I think they are now extinct) that would side with Democrats on some issues. We can expect Republicans in the House and Senate to eliminate regulations, lower taxes, and 6
support the “business climate.” The stock market, which was predicted to lose momentum in case of a Trump election, has actually gained. Is this sustainable? Economist and former Harvard President Lawrence Summers, acknowledges that the Republican approach to the economy might “drive major increases in investment and hiring, setting off a virtuous circle of economic growth and rising confidence.” But he says the Trump administration will face enough challenges that we should “hope for the best and plan for the worst.” The International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicted world economic growth at 3.4 percent, with US growth at about 2 percent, and far more robust growth in China and India, where growth is likely to exceed 6 percent. But the IMF cautions that restrictions on global trade will also constrain global growth. In both the UK and the United States, there has been resistance to globalization, and an eagerness to renegotiate trade treaties. Who will benefit from this increased growth? Certainly not the folks at the bottom. Indeed one might attribute the Trump Electoral College victory to the fact that macroeconomic growth indicators
SATURDAY, JANUARY 28, 2017
Dr. Julianne Malveaux have not quite trickled down. The heavily pro-business Republican leadership is counting on the trickle down to create jobs for the 99 percent. They can’t force capitalists to use the proceeds from their tax cuts to create jobs. Indeed, when banks were bailed out, they held onto the money that politicians hoped they would loan to small
businesses to stimulate growth and economic expansion. African Americans with moderate incomes (the average African American family income is about $35,000), others who are similarly situated, lower-income people, and the economically vulnerable are not likely to gain in the “new economy.” Businesses however, are likely to do very well. Is America made “great again” if economic vulnerability increases? I think not! There is likely to be tension between the Trump Administration and the Federal Reserve. How quickly will the interest rate be increased, and what impact will it have on the “average” American. Millennials who have been saving to purchase a home (those who have paid off their student loans) will need to save even more (as much as $30,000 for each percentage point increase in the interest rate) to accumulate a down payment. And Ben Carson, who is likely to be Secretary of HUD, is not likely to do anything to make their quest for homeownership any easier. President Obama was able to stabilize the economy. The unemployment rate is below 5 percent (although labor force participation
Blacks Must control their own coMMunity
is lower than it should be), growth has been stable, and the stock market has been strong. The benefits of this strong economy were not evenly distributed, though. It is even less likely that the benefits of the growth that the IMF predicts will be evenly distributed. Markets don’t distribute benefits fairly. Political will is a factor in fair and even distribution. We know that Republican “free market” economic philosophies suggest that there is no political will for fairness. We will experience macroeconomic ecstasy and microeconomic angst, with economic indicators looking strong, and individual experiences looking far more troubled. What’s next for the economy? The one percent will benefit, and the rest of us will experience increased vulnerability. As Summers says, “hope for the best, plan for the worst.” Julianne Malveaux is an author and economist. CAN WE MAKE IT 4 YEARS? I know Ima ain’t the only one asking this question after the January 20th inauguration of Donald Trump. That is “Can we make it four years?” If we are subjected to the same crap we were subjected to in the campaign all Ima can say is Lord have mercy. It started off all right with a church service and tea with the Obamas and Melania brings a Tiffany gift. By the way what was it in that gift? Then they were off for the swearing in. Donald came in with his coats open, tie hanging down to his you how what. Donald makes the worse inauguration speech ever in which he managed to insult every living President present with his nonsense. I thought for a moment that the south side was going to come out of gracious Michelle Obama and jap slap the mess out of Donald. He thought he gave a great speech. Ima can truthfully say it was no unifying speech that most had hoped for. The crow that showed up to swear in Mike Pence was non other than Clarence Thomas. He was one Ima didn’t care if she never saw again. The Chief Justice of the
Supreme Court swore in Donald Trump without making a mistake. I guess he practiced enough not to flub it as he had once with President Obama. If this wasn’t a sign that the minister tried to give a positive spin on was the rain that started almost precisely as Trump started to speak and seemed to dissipate afterwards. All that was missing was a black cloud and thunder. Then came the luncheon that Ima couldn’t watch, my stomach spewed ashes and stuff so my time was spent in the toilet. I came out just in time for Trump to acknowledge the Clintons. I thought I would have to return to the outhouse when he mumbled something about them being good people. Are these the same Clintons that were liars, thieves and all the dirty things he said about them in the campaign? Little did we know we would be in a big bru ha ha cause the media said there were less folks at the inauguration than when Obama was first sworn in. Well it sure did look like it on the pictures I saw that this was the case. It must have been my lying eyes. And then at the parade some of the stands were mostly empty. Again it must have been my lying eyes. Oh by the way Melania wore a beautiful and expensive suit of blue for the day and a beautiful white dress for the balls. Oh by
Richard Boykin
crowds were smaller at his inauguration than at President Obama’s. He went to meet with the CIA and made some strange remarks. He sent his press secretary out to the press and he started his career as press secretary telling lies about the crowd count. What a way to start things Mr. Press Secretary. Sunday they started off with church, maybe that’s the problem. President Donaltd Trump is not recognized in any church. And then the President of the United States’ senior advisor took to the Sunday talk shows. His honery was not a happy camper because he had said that his inauguration would be the biggest.

the way they couldn’t dance. I guess there was no time for practice in between the election and the inauguration. By the way before I forget Mrs. Pence was there in her JC Penney outfits. She and her husband Mike couldn’t dance either. As a matter of fact none of the stage full of Trumps were impressive dancers. That we could live with. Trump signed several bills and documents. Melania never smiled and Ima knows she’s not a happy camper. Oh well, we could live with an unhappy First Lady. And all was well we thought!!!
Barron Trump seemed to be bored with all of the pomp and stuff. At one time I thought he was going to fight Melania. So Ima ain’t gonna take any pot

LINCOLN’S UNDYING WORDS: Discover how Abraham Lincoln’s changing views toward slavery transformed America. The exhibition, ONGOING through February 20, explores this powerful story through five key speeches made by Lincoln between 1858-65. An Eternal Platform - In 1860, Abraham Lincoln takes office as a political moderate. While he firmly opposes slavery on moral and political grounds, he does not publicly call for its abolition, for fear of revolutionary consequences. It is America’s greatest crisis — the Civil War — which transforms his political views on racial equality and defines him as one of the nation’s most extraordinary leaders. Through the words of his most significant speeches, Lincoln’s pen became his most powerful weapon. Lincoln’s Undying Words celebrates his courage and eloquence, with which he helped create a new definition of equality and ultimately saved the Union. Visit the exhibit to learn how Lincoln’s words still challenge and inspire us today, and leave a legacy of hope, inspiration, and the eternal pursuit of human equality. Rare treasures, including Lincoln’s family carriage and the bed in which he died, will be on view, supplemented by an audio program of selected excerpts from the speeches. Hours Mondays - Saturdays: 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; Sundays: 12 – 5 p.m. The exhibition is included with Museum admission. The Chicago History Museum is located at 1601 N. Clark Street, Chica-

The $240 million, mixed-use project includes construction of a new 620-foot residential building and the rehabilitation of the adjacent Essex Inn. Designed by Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture, Essex on the Park will be LEED-certified and contain up to 479 residential units and 290 hotel rooms. It will also create 130 permanent jobs and 275 construction jobs. A post-recession record 52 tower cranes went up in Chicago in 2016, and the pace continues this year with two cranes installed in the first two weeks of 2017. In addition to the construction record, 2016 set an alltime tourism record with 54.1 million visitors to the city, up 2.9 percent from the previous high-mark set in 2015. Last year Chicago's tourism industry supported $15 billion in direct tourism spending and an estimated 145,137 jobs - an increase of more than 20,000 new jobs since Mayor Emanuel took office. The tower will rise on the site of the

As part of the project’s zoning approval, the developer will contribute $2.02 million into the City’s Affordable Housing Opportunity Fund, which is used to finance affordable housing construction and help mitigate homelessness throughout Chicago. Ald. Sophia King (4th) also worked with the developer to include affordable housing units on site. “Thanks to our mutual commitment to affordable housing, Oxford Capital agreed to exceed its affordable housing obligation as part of this landmark project (DRAFT),” Ald. King said. “It will be a win for residents and a win for the neighborhood.” The 15-story Essex Inn was designed by A. Epstein & Sons and completed in 1961. Designed in the International Style, the glass and steel structure was recently recommended for landmark status by the Commission on Chicago Landmarks, to be considered by City Council later this year, the designation would protect the building’s elevations, rooflines and rooftop sign.

Under her direction, Link has successfully provided education and training that has helped transition more than 2,200 economically disadvantaged African American youth to college. Then, HEART & SOUL shines a light on Bright Endeavors, a non-profit helping single mothers. The organization employs 85 moms each year to make scented candles. In addition to pouring and packaging candles, these women learn other critical job skills which will enable them to pursue more permanent positions after the program is completed. Continuing the focus on education, the program highlights the mission of Kappa Leadership Institute of Chicago. Kappa Leadership Institute’s primary goal is to provide education and college readiness for economically disadvantaged and/or underrepresented minority males, primarily African American high school youth. A documentary based on the unfinished work by the iconic civil rights activist and author James Baldwin will hit theatres soon, and I say it is right on time—given the political climate in America. “I am Not Your Negro” is a documentary about Baldwin, which is filled with footage—some never before seen—about the civil rights movement. Before his death in 1987, Baldwin had been working on a piece that would look at the lens of racism as it related to the lives and deaths of Dr. Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and Medgar Evers. While Baldwin never finished
By Elaine Hegwood Bowen, M.S.J. then is even more relevant now, on the heels of a Trump presidency. Now, many people have different interpretations of the title, and I’ve even read posts where people are replacing the word Negro with the “N” word. I don’t see it that way. I see it as Baldwin saying, “Don’t ask me to be the mouthpiece for the entire Black
race.” The word colored was popular during this time, and Cavett’s use of Negro may have been a way for the iconic talk show host to appear forward-thinking. Further, in the film, which has been pegged as one of the best of 2016, Baldwin highlights contradic(Continued on page 13)

Jackson as the narrator, which is not only visually appealing with its footage and vintage video of Baldwin, but awe-inspiring for the message that it gives. But the title alone should be enough to get butts in the theatre, no matter how far you would have to go to enjoy a screening. The documentary shows Baldwin coming back to the United States to New York from his then-home in France to report on the state of Black America. In one explosive interview—in only the way that Baldwin could deliver—talk show host Dick Cavett questions Baldwin in 1968 about why Negroes aren’t optimistic, even with the progress that had been made in the Black community. This so-called progress came in the guise of Negro mayors, athletes and even in television commercials. Baldwin deflects the “Negro” question, saying JAMES BALDWIN GRACES the cover of a 1963 Time Magazine. that it doesn’t matter what the Negro Baldwin was often called on to write about or explain the "Negro has done up to that point, it matters situation" in America. THE BOOKWORM SEZ “Audacity: How Barack Obama Defied His Critics and Transformed America”
By Jonathan Chait c.2017, Custom House / William Morrow $27.99 / $34.99 Canada 272 pages If you can’t say something nice… Sometimes, it’s hard to say nothing at all. There are times when you need to speak out, to confront, share your opinion, rant, or vent. And then there are times, as in the new book “Audacity” by Jonathan Chait, where you must praise. For perhaps the last few months of Barack Obama’s presidency, media outlets have debated about something that definitely matters: was he

one of the best presidents, or one of the worst? It’s the former, says Chait, even though he admits there are times when it looks like the latter. Obama, he says, absolutely succeeded at what he set out to do, and this book follows that argument. Though the Civil Rights movement was forty-some years prior to the day a Black man moved into the White House, racial issues keenly split the country over the last eight years, not along lines of race, but on political lines. White America often denied it, but Obama forced a harder soul-search on racism. He reportedly had a large agenda upon taking office in 2009, but it quickly became clear that his work would be to avoid, rather than fix, another Great Depression. He succeeded, but no President gets kudos for things like that. Instead, says Chait, there was – and still is – criticism about his actions, economically. Health care legislation insured millions of Americans who otherwise would have no coverage, thanks to Obama and a surprising number of ideas that first came from the Republicans. As a new President, Obama boosted the economy by spending money on green energy, with an eye toward global climate concerns. He helped restore America’s world-wide “standing” and foresightedly recognized China and India as budding superpowers. So why is anyone questioning his audacity, or the legacy he leaves behind? The answer to that lies in the recent past, and in the history of Twentieth-Century American politics. Understanding both, and what

happens from here, is enhanced by learning what’s inside “Audacity.” Just know first that there’s a lot to absorb. Because author Jonathan Chait is also a political columnist, the goings-on behind-the-scenes in Washington are presented in great detail in this book. That can be both a good thing and a bad thing: good, because Chait is clear in reasoning and thorough in fact-finding, in favor of arguments for a stellar Obama legacy; bad, because this thoroughness becomes quite heavy at times. That could turn away readers with a lesser palate for politics, although one wouldn’t have to look hard to see why persevering is important: Chait explains how Obama’s tenure as President ultimately turned out as it did, and why many voters are still, perhaps wrongly, disappointed in his work. Chait then goes on to clearly illuminate what happened at the last election, and why. Give yourself time for a careful read of this book, especially if you might disagree with its author. There’s argument in here that may – or may not – change minds; either way, “Audacity” might at least give you something nice to say.
(Continued from page 12) tions in what America says and what the dominate culture actually does. There are explosive scenes of Dr. King being attacked in Marquette Park in 1966, Blacks being pummeled with water hoses in Birmingham, Alabama, as well as noteworthy Black cinema like “A Raisin in the Sun” and “The Imitation of Life.” We see a bit of the Jerry Springer show and protests by the Black Lives Matter movement. These images show the importance of the role that Hollywood and media plays in portraying Black life. The movie has been described as telling the “not so pretty story about the Negro in America,” and one audience member at the film festival not only agrees that the story isn’t pretty, but that Baldwin never pulled punches in telling the story. According to Birmingham native and North Sider Belinda Silber: “Every time you would see Baldwin on the screen with some white elite liberal you knew that he or she was going to be in trouble. They would ask their questions and expect a ‘kumbaya’ moment, where both
Blacks Must control their own coMMunity
parties would display a sheepish grin, as if all was right with the world, but Baldwin always responded with blistering truth with eloquence while posing like a dandy with his ever present cigarette.” She continued: “‘I Am Not Your Negro’ is a film that shows you that he [Baldwin] was the griot, the keeper of truth and knowledge and that he would not cower or be silenced. When observing the faces of the other guests on the talk shows, they would exhibit fear, though still smiling. Baldwin was not tricked or fooled, because not only was he not your Negro, he was not your Black friend. It's wonderful to hear Baldwin in his own words and see the man. His words were as powerful as his persona. People often use the expression that someone is ‘lit,’ well Baldwin is the fire.” “I Am Not Your Negro” was a lastminute offering during the 2015 Chicago International Film Festival; it had a private screening on January 26 at the DuSable Museum of African American History, and will finally be released nationally on February 3. A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking To thine own self be true—it must follow the night as the day then thou canst be fault to any man (Shakespeare). I have always loved that truth. It reminds me of what Mark Twain once said, “If you always tell the truth—you never have to remember what you said.” Of course, this not only applies to what you say, but also what you do concerning your life. Going back to the previous cliché, which came to mind after a conversation regarding attending church with a friend, Stanley. Although, he has been attending services regularly for the past few years, now that his pastor is soon to relocate, Stanley is considering going back into withdrawal mode. In other words, he’s about to give the right hand of fellowship to the “Church of God Within.” Some might refer to it as Bedside Baptist. For the past 12 years, Stanley’s cry
has been ‘there’s no hurt like that from the Black church.’ This mindset caused him to become a recluse and avoid attending Sunday morning worship. Now in my opinion, it’s nearly impossible for any church member past or present not to experience some type of offense. Every person has a different personality and opinion—so we just have to deal with it. It’s called life and comes with the territory. We must ever be mindful to keep our eyes on the prize or your primary goal for you can become easily sidetracked by people and leaders (Philippians 3:14). After we talked for a few minutes, I concluded that the bottom line was to ‘do you’ —translation—whatever makes you happy. As long as you and God are good with it and you can look yourself in the mirror—go for it. My mother used to say, “If you like it—I love it.” After our conversation ended, I pondered on the Shake-

spearean cliché even more. Most people probably don’t live their convictions. So often, I even find myself reflecting on family traditions and values before moving forward. Of course, morals and mores are a necessity in anyone’s life. However, in the final analysis—it’s all about you. No one can live your truth, but you. Therefore, it’s essential that you don’t hide behind you family, the church or anyone or anything else. Last week, I mentioned that God constantly speaks to us, but too often, that ‘still small voice’ is silenced by the noise and clutter of our daily lives. In the end, you have a God given assignment and mission in this world—right here and right now. No excuse or reason is justifiable when it comes to defaulting the Master’s plan concerning your life. We are talking about all of you—your entire life. Not just bits and pieces, but as it
relates to your day to day operations, career, family, finances—any and all things concerning you. The conclusion of the whole matter is to do what makes you happy. You and you alone must also be content with the naked truth of your life that will stare you back in the mirror. Always be mindful that with any choice you do or don’t make— comes consequences. In addition to being fearless with your life’s path— be audacious to stand up to the consequences that are sure to forever haunt you. One of those doors was an invitation to the inaugural ball, to Washington, D.C. After much prayer, deliberation and soulsearching, I literally spoke to most of my spiritual advisers throughout the country, and it was an overwhelming, 'Go!' Because in the Bible, many times, when God's hand was on someone, on his servant, he gave them access to places of power. They served and spoke his word in front of kings that they agreed with and disagreed with. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR trict is about to waste a whole lot of money because it wants to privatize some services at a handful of schools. I am not a fan of privatization, but when I see it can be beneficial and save a public body money, I say we have no choice. Well, that is not the case when it comes to CPS. CPS officials know damn well that this is a scam and that some fat cat’s bank accounts will be pumped up when the deal goes through for privatizing snow removal, rodent and pest control, and certain building repairs. Otherwise, how do
(Continued from page 4) you explain that CPS doesn’t point to a savings? They came up with some fancy term “cost neutral” to try to explain there is no upside to this proposal. They do say that the two companies they will contract with have not lived up to expectations in their earlier contracts. So, if they did a crappy job before, why bring the same two companies on board to do more crappy work? The only reasonable answer is some money is exchanging hands under the table. There is no other plausible explanation. We also have
