State Rep. Monique Davis antly refusing a request by school administrators to return a statue it says was taken from campus. State Representative Monique
Davis (D-27th) is remaining defiant in efforts to return “Defiance,” a $25,000 statue of a female African slave, to CSU despite repeated requests by school administrators. Davis said she is getting a “legal opinion” before returning the artwork, which she claims was purchased in part by a procurement of funds from her office. The statue was originally purchased to be put on display in an office on the CSU campus. The funding for the student financial aid center, which was closed in 2008 after the monies were cut, came from a supplemental appropriation from the Illinois General Assembly of which Davis oversaw. A University source said school investigators are still trying to determine where the statue was taken from. The source also could not confirm if the statue was ever displayed on the campus. Other published reports say the statue was in a warehouse on the CSU campus. School officials would only say the statue was somewhere on the campus, but were still investigating when it actually was discovered missing.
Students and faculty at CSU have complained for years that Black politicians from the Illinois General Assembly treat CSU as their own political dumping
ground for friends and supporters to whom they owe political favors. Davis herself is an alumna of CSU, along with state (Continued on page 3)

Census Bureau ‘insults’ historic influence of Black Newspapers By Pharoh Martin NNPA National Correspondent CHARLOTTE (NNPA) - Flanked by dozens of Black newspaper publishers from across the country, National Newspaper Publishers Association Chairman Danny Bakewell is demanding that the U.S. Census Bureau allocate more funding in advertising for Black newspapers throughout America in order to conduct an accurate count in the 2010 U.S. Census. The current allocation both disrespects the Black Press’ ability to influence African-Americans to respond to the census and woefully inadequate to properly inform Black communities about the impor-
tance of being counted, he said. “It’s an issue that grieves us to make public,” said the L os Angeles Sentinel publisher at a news conference in Charlotte on Thursday. “We are deeply troubled that we have to speak out about the lack of commitment and resources that have been allocated to the Black Press of America in order to do an awesome task of counting the undercounted in Black America throughout the country and the Diaspora.” Bakewell said he believes the Census Bureau has a lack of political will to allocate the appropriate resources that are needed to properly and thoroughly reach the African-American community. He said the $2.5 million dollar advertising budget that

Studies dispute pros and cons of Wal-Mart in Chicago By J. Coyden Palmer In addition to city council members and residents debating, duelling studies on the impact of bringing more Wal-Mart stores to Chicago are also entering the fray. Most media outlets, including this one, have quoted a study conducted by the Center for Urban Research and Learning of Loyola University Chicago, which followed the progress of the city’s only Wal-Mart store on the West Side. The study claims that WalMart has not created as many jobs as it promises and that small businesses are hurt when the superstore comes into a neighborhood. But a study by Mari Gallagher Research & Consulting Group disputes the Loyola study. It claims the Loyola study is fundamentally flawed. The Gallagher study says some data, such as firms that entered the community since Wal-Mart’s arrival, were not included in the study but rather added to the appendix. The Gallagher study also claims the Loyola study evaluates the impact of Wal-Mart using a linear regression, which Gallagher believes is not the best option. Instead, according to the Gallagher report, both the level of sales and the rate of growth of sales should be represented as part of the change. In the Loyola study, only the rate of growth of sales is represented in the data. The Gallagher study concludes that the job growth rate in their study shows that having the WalMart on the city’s West Side actually showed a very slight job growth in the area. The Gallagher study also states there are several reasons that businesses around the Wal-Mart store that went out of business could have done so and they may have had nothing to do with their superstore neighbor. “There are many reasons why stores go in and out of business,” the Gallagher study states. “Markets are in constant movement, and when markets revitalize, they
churn. Where there is churning, impact needs to be measured carefully. The Loyola authors themselves state that there is “considerable uncertainty” attached to their finding, yet they nonetheless assert the finding with few or no qualifications elsewhere in the report and through media venues.” The Gallagher study also states that if you are going to study the impact Wal-Mart has had on competing community jobs lost, then it is only right to also study the competing community jobs that have been gained at the same period. “In addition to Menard’s, new entrants include Aldi, Chase Bank, Bank of America, CVS, Conway’s, American Kid, O & W Auto Parts, and J-Bees,” the study states. City council members and citizens are trying to evaluate a crush of local and national data on WalMart stores before taking sides on the issue. But in Chicago, the issue does not seem to be focused as much on jobs lost or gained, but rather how much jobs Wal-Mart brings to the city will pay workers. Alderman Howard Brookins has been fighting for years to bring a Wal-Mart store to his South Side ward. Brookins said unemployment is a big problem in his community and on a regular basis he hears from constituents who want a Wal-Mart store brought to a shopping center just west of 83rd and the Dan Ryan. Brookins has stated in the past that in addition to bringing jobs to his ward, WalMart will also bring a grocery store to the area which has been identified as a “food desert.” Unions are against the retailer coming into Chicago because of their belief based on the company’s history of not paying their workers a fair salary. Those who oppose Wal-Mart say for a company that makes huge profits, it should be doing more to provide affordable health insurance to employees and pay wages for fulltime workers that will allow em-

And we will tell it. And we are telling it today. We are calling the Census to task and we are asking our representatives in the United States Congress please do not allow this to happen. ” There is much at stake. The outcome of the 2010 Census data will determine how more than $3 trillion in federal funding will be
allocated over the next decade as well as how states will be represented in Congress. And so, the flow of federal funds into Black communities and congressional representation will be determined by how accurate the Black population is counted. So accuracy is paramount. In 2000, the national undercount was 0.1 percent, but the Black under-count was 2.8 percent, according to statistics cited by National Urban League President Marc Morial. Fewer than 60 percent of African-Americans re-
turned their 2000 Census questionnaire compared to 77.5 percent of whites, according to the Census Bureau. Bakewell says the U. S. Census Bureau could miss an opportunity to avoid a travesty by not using Black newspapers to get the word out. “In the 2000 Census, we were undercounted by two percent,” Bakewell said. “We believe that we are on the cusp of being given a devastating blow by the 2010 Census of being undercounted in a way like we have never been un-

In addition, Ford will be making significant investment in supplier tooling to support next-generation Explorer production. The auto company is benefiting from Governor Quinn’s continuing effort to create and maintain jobs in Illinois. On December 14, Governor Quinn signed into law the Economic Development for a Growing Economy (EDGE) tax credit for auto manufacturers. That EDGE tax credit enables the auto industry, which is among Illinois’ largest employers, to retain employee income tax withholdings as an alternative to current EDGE corporate tax credit and reinvest those funds into operations that generate greater employment. “Governor Quinn immediately understood the importance of (Continued on page 3) The Chicago Crusader

CRUSADER ENDORSEMENTS The Illinois Primary Elections are here and it is important for every citizen to get out and vote. A democracy needs informed, committed and participatory citizens if it is to be a viable construct. If you don’t vote, you have no right to complain about the candidates that win. With that said, the Chicago Crusader endorses the following candidates for public office:
For Illinois Governor— Daniel W. Hynes ( Democrat)- We are endorsing Daniel Hynes because he is a fresh face that promises newer, and hopefully more effective leadership, than the current governor. Not much has been done since our incumbent edged his way into office last year. He has not shown good leadership, has not replaced Blacks in office with other Blacks when vacancies occurred, and has had to be coerced to change his mind to inact policies that would benefit the Black community. Dan Hynes, however, presents change that could possibly benefit the community.
Illinois Lieutenant GoverArthur L. Turner (Denor—A mocrat)— Art Turner has served 15 terms as State Representative of the 9th Legislative District and over 20 years as the Deputy Majority leader of the House of Representatives. He has relationships in the legislature and across the nation, and is known as a consensus builder. He has a strong knowledge of the legislative process and is known as a policy maker of strong integrity, which will be value-added for the Illinois Executive branch. For these reasons we endorse him for the post of Illinois Lieutenant Governor.

University officials would not answer questions about the issue when the Crusader inquired, but they did release a statement that in part read: “Several years ago, under a previous administration, a former employee of Chicago State University authorized the purchase of a statue called “Defiance.” In October of 2009, the statue was identified as missing from the campus and was subsequently found in the office of a state representative,” wrote University General Counsel Patrick Cage. “The fact that this statue went missing points out security needs we must address to protect University assets. We’re taking appropriate steps to recover the statue.” Cage went on to say that CSU’s new president, Dr. Wayne Watson is committed to improving the South Side school by focusing on fiscal management and control. Recent state audits in the past two years have shown this to be a problem area for CSU as well. Davis said she is planning a news conference soon to further explain her position on the issue. She is upset that the media has depicted her as a thief. She said she has no plans to keep the statue even though she admitted to having a bond with it. Davis might not think she is a thief, but

ated I would have been arrested. But I’m more so bothered with Ms. Davis’ sense of entitlement.” Davis is running unopposed in the February 2 primary election. She has been in office for 21 years. The statue debate is just the latest controversy to befall Davis. Last month the Chicago Board of Education sued Davis for nearly $84,000 in back rent they say she owes after going seven years without paying rent on the property in the 1200 block of west 95th Street. CPS Inspector General James Sullivan said that after Davis unsuccessfully renegotiated a lease in 2002, CPS officials asked her to leave the property, but took no further action. Sullivan said Davis actually owes more than what they are suing her for because as the leaseholder on the property, she is responsible for the property taxes that have not been paid either. Davis responded by saying that last year was the first time the Board sent her a new lease for the property, which is why she had not paid. CSU Police Chief Ronnie Watson said his officers and he have gone by Davis’ office several times since October of last year to try to recover “Defiant” but with no success. Watson has told media members that he has been given the run-around by Davis and her staff members when it comes to retrieving the statue. The Crusader will continue to follow this story as it develops. 3

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Connor calls for disinfection of Chicago waterways Dear Editor: Yesterday, the Tribune reported on the resistance by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) to join its peer cities in disinfecting its sewage before it is shipped off to the Mississippi River, and on to other states and waterways. The argument has been that implementing disinfection technologies will 1) cost money, and 2) increase carbon emissions by requiring energy to operate disinfection technologies. The logic rings hallow, like the CTA not wanting to purchase buses because they 1) cost money, and 2) increase carbon emissions. The purpose of the MWRD is to protect and preserve our waterways. And while this agency has a record of being imaginative with its solutions, the solutions have always been disruptive to the natural state of affairs: reversing the flow of the Chicago River, building the Ship & Sanitary Canal to connect the Great Lakes watershed
with the Mississippi, and building the Deep Tunnel (only to be out-spent by the Big Dig in Boston and the Washington DC subway system). So why is it, then, that we have such a hard time being similarly imaginative when it comes to restoring nature? If we, as humans, have a track record with nature it is that whenever we try and solve one problem, we always create a new one. When we reversed the Chicago River, we stopped sending polluted water into Lake Michigan, but started the net depletion of fresh water from the Great Lakes. When we built the Ship & Sanitary Canal, we found a convenient way to get boats and sewage from Chicago to the Mississippi Delta, but we also created a super-highway for Asian Carp to make their way to us. And when we built the Deep Tunnel, we found a way to hold a lot of sewage, but signed ourselves up for a construction project that will never stop needing money for repairs, and does not move us towards a sustainable future. Let’s buck history, put on our thinking caps, and find imaginative ways to get us closer to what Mother Nature intended. And doing the right thing, incidentally, will save taxpayers dollars in the long run as well. Learn more about disinfection, and sign our petition calling on

BEYOND THE RHETORIC
No Jobs, No Recovery, No Votes By Harry Alford NNPA Columnist
It is a pretty simple formula. Yet, many of our federally elected officials don’t seem to understand or
Harry C. Alford
at least listen to the masses. The messages in Virginia and New Jersey were certainly clear. Still they prodded on with their largesse and out of touch agenda. Then comes Massachusetts like the
thunder of an electrical storm or the roar of the mighty ocean. Still I wonder if they have figured it out yet. The people want jobs, jobs, jobs! Big schemes like healthcare reform, energy bills, greedy attempts by union lobbyists, etc. will have to wait. The Clinton Campaign’s slogan still applies: “It’s the economy stupid!” For the first time in many decades the very democratic state Massachusetts voted to kill the humungous healthcare reform bill and turn the efforts into job creation. Families are hurting and many are being destroyed. Hope is fading as we go through the worst economic downturn since the great depression. The population demands a full concentration on getting America back on its economic feet. Those officials who don’t concentrate on this task will be heading for unemployment themselves. This election cycle is going to be very exciting. The healthcare reform effort is pretty much dead. The Republicans, thanks to Massachusetts, now have the filibuster weapon. The Democrats can get around that if they accept the Senate version of the bill as it stands. But the House, like much of America,
has serious issues with the Senate version and probably could not gather enough votes to pass it. For instance, the Congressional Black Caucus insists that a public option be available in the legislation. However, the Senate version has no public option. Then there was the vote swapping via kickbacks, bribery, and downright financial whoring. It’s now ugly and the people don’t want it. After nine months, this amounts to a monster that no one intended to create. It is going to die and still we have no jobs. Listen Congress and listen White House, not another program or major project until the economy gets right. If the jobs don’t start rolling in between now and November a whole lot of you are going to be “toast.” What else do we have to do to let you know? You who stutter are going to witness a very strong group of independents, if not a new third party. This nation is on the verge of voting revolution and that is a good thing. Don’t start talking about Cap and Trade. That is a hustle as much as the healthcare mess was. Card Check, Project Labor Agreements and anything else the radical, almost communist, unions
pay you to put up to the people is going to be slammed down hard and with certainty. Your political careers will fizzle right before your eyes. From California to the East Coast the people will once again vote for change. That is a change for a better economy. Here’s the big deal that they refuse to look at. 70% of all new jobs come from the growth of Small Businesses. Yes, small business creates 70% of all new jobs. So Congress and Mr. President, how about setting the market for small business growth? Maybe we should infuse the Small Business Administration with more capital guarantees for small business loans. Wouldn’t that be positive? How about returning the SBA to a staff of 5,000 like it was when Bill Clinton became President instead of the 1700 you have now. Shouldn’t we stop bundling contracts and break them down so that more small businesses can participate. You know, the saddest thing about this is that it is so simple. It is simple to those who want to get it done but so hard to see for the greedy and special interest groups. If your congressperson or senator is not focusing on small business growth then it is time to vote him/her out. Upgrade your
leadership and increase the number of new jobs being created. Another important fact to remember: Small businesses create jobs while unions manipulate jobs and limit them. If a project is nonunion it will provide significantly more jobs. A similar project that is union will cost the client much more and thereby limit the power of the budget (amount of jobs). Please notice that the highest unemployment areas in our nation are in places that are prevalent with union shops. Right to work states have significantly more employment than their union counterparts. It is very clear and simple. Find out how much money your elected official gets from the union coffers. If they are on the “payroll” vote them out. That money should be used for pension funds anyway. Instead, the unions are trying to buy influence with their members’ precious money. Yes, it is POWER TO THE PEOPLE AND THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN. Mr. Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce®. Website: www.nationalbcc.org. Race and Politics at the New York Times By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist Slightly more than three years ago, Gerald M. Boyd, one of my best friends, died of lung cancer at the age of 56. He had been promoted to managing editor of the New York Times, the highest position an African American journalist had ever attained at the nation’s most influential newspaper. But his career at the newspaper abruptly ended in 2003 when it was discovered that Jayson Blair, another African American, was a serial plagiarizer. At the time of his death, Gerald was finishing up his memoir. His wife, Robin D. Stone, has seen the project to completion and the result is a book titled, My Times in Black and White: Race and Power at The New York Times (Lawrence Hill Books). Gerald has written a revealing insider’s account of an African American’s quick rise to the second-highest ranking editorial position at the New York Times and his sudden fall from grace as a result of his close association with Howell Raines, a deeply disliked White executive editor, and being unfairly linked to Jayson Blair, a fraud masquerading as a Black re-
porter. I knew Gerald all of his professional career, dating back to the early 1970s when we both worked as reporters for the St. Louis PostDispatch. As I have written earlier in this space, we lived across the street from each other in St. Louis, played cards together, enjoyed flag football on weekends, started the St. Louis Minority Journalism Workshop together in 1976, helped establish the Greater St. Louis Association of Black Journalists and spent long hours on the road together, covering the campaigns of elder George Bush and Jesse Jackson. One of the most striking things about Gerald’s memoir is how he naively believed that with his sterling accomplishments – covering the White House, leading two series that won the New York Times Pulitzer Prizes, studying as a Nieman Fellow at Harvard – he would be judged on the basis of his talent, not his race. Boy, was he wrong on that one. His first clue should have been the conversation he had with Jimmy Greenfield, who handled newsroom administration at the Times. “I really enjoyed your clips – they’re so well written,” Greenfield told Gerald. “Did you write them

George E. Curry yourself, or did someone write them for you?” Gerald replied, “Of course I wrote them myself!” Gerald explained, “Later, I thought I should have told him how offensive his question was. I would understand the context: the Times was a place where Blacks felt they had to convince their white peers that they were good enough to be there. It was my first exposure to the racial culture of the paper, the ugly underside of life at the Times.” It wouldn’t be Gerald’s last exposure to the ugly underside of the newspaper.
After Gerald became an editor, Soma Golden, the newly-minted national editor, proposed that Gerald become Atlanta bureau chief. The book recounts that Golden told him, “You are perfect for the job. You can cover the South as a Black man, bringing nuance that no white reporter could.” As proud as Gerald was of his race, he wanted to cover the news as a reporter, not as a Black man. “Clearly, race had motivated Golden more than talent,” Gerald wrote. “I was glad that I had declined her offer.” But he didn’t decline the offer of Howell Raines, the newly-appointed executive editor, to become his managing editor, the No. 2 position in the newsroom. Gerald would later recount that Raines had told him, “You are such a great partner, I’m so glad I picked you.” However, Raines expressed a different opinion after the Jayson Blair explosion caused their forced resignations. In 2004, Raines wrote a long article about the Times in the Atlantic Monthly. Referring to Raines, Gerald said: “He portrayed the staff as mediocre, the publisher as lacking backbone. He was equally harsh in his comments about me. ‘I also wantSaturday, January 30, 2010
ed to see, as Arthur [Sulzberger, Jr., the publisher] himself needed to, what Gerald Boyd could do in the high-demand situation,’ he revealed, reducing my selection to a question mark. My career at the Times was one of measurable accomplishments that no one could deny. Yet, Raines’ depiction was of a managing editor trainee. This was even more painful than the dozens of inaccurate descriptions of me as Jayson Blair’s mentor.” After their dismissals, Raines wrote Gerald a letter suggesting that they meet for drinks. “I never responded to his letter,” Gerald said. “I was tired of being betrayed, tired of the Times, tired of him.” Gerald was savvy enough to know that in order to move up at the New York Times, he needed a rabbi, someone to serve as a sponsor. Howell Raines was one of those persons, pushing for Gerald to become managing editor. The flip side of that equation, however, is that when you become a tandem, as he and Raines were, you begin a downward trajectory whenever your partner flames out. When Raines was kicked out of the door, Gerald was pushed out, (Continued on page 15) 5

That new meaning of African Centered thought, as defined by Dr. Wade Nobles, “is nothing more than a term categorizing a quality of thought and practice
Dr. Conrad Worrill which is rooted in the cultural image and interest of African people and which represents and reflects the life experiences, history and traditions of African people as the center of analyses.” With this definition it is clear that we must study the liberation of African people. Dr. Nobles further states that African Centered thought is, “the intellectual and philosophical foundations upon which African people should create their own scientific criterion for authenticating human reality.” Through the African Centered Education Movement, African American History Month has now become the catalyst for the intense study of Africa and the history of African people throughout the world 365 days a year. We must pay particular attention in our 6
studies to the history of the Reparations Movement. Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who founded in February of 1926 what at that time was called “Negro History Week,” would indeed be inspired by the continuing discussion and debate over the infusion of the contributions of African people in all subjects. Dr. Woodson was deeply concerned that the contributions of African people to this society and the world were not given their proper recognition. Dr. Woodson’s great book The Miseducation of the Negro, written in 1933, described in the first chapter titled, “The Seat of the Trouble,” the essence of what the African Centered Curriculum Movement is battling against today— 77 years later. Dr. Woodson explained that, “Of the hundreds of Negro high schools recently examined (1933) by an expert in the United States Bureau of Education only eighteen offer a course taking up the history of the Negro, and in most of the Negro colleges and universities where the Negro is thought of, the race is studied only as a problem or dismissed as of little consequence.” Continuing on, Dr. Woodson gave an example of, “an officer of a Negro university, thinking that an additional course on the Negro should be given there, called upon a Negro Doctor of Philosophy on the faculty to offer such work. He promptly informed the officer that he knew nothing about the Negro. He did not go to school to waste his time that way. He went to be educated in a system which dismissed the Negro as a nonentity.” Obviously, since the writing of this great book, we have come a long way in our battle against challenging the white supremacy foundation of the American public school curriculum. However, we still have a long way to go! The Black Movement of the 1960s gave us an impetus to reexamine our history and its impact on this country and the world. This movement brought on renewed interest, on the part of our people, to study our history. We moved from the use of the term “Negro” in referring to ourselves and began to use “Black” as the more appropriate way to describe who we are. We went from

Black History Week to Black History Month. In fact, some of us began to refer to the month of February as Black Liberation Month. It was through the movement of the 1960s, particularly the Black Power Phase that we began to reidentify with our homeland— Africa, and the interconnection of African people throughout the world. The Black student movement of the 1960s sparked demands for courses in Black Studies that lead the famous strike at San Francisco State University. After a long battle with the administration at the university, the students finally won a victory for the first Black Studies Program to be established at an American college or university. As a result, a movement for Black Studies erupted all over America and stimulated at the elementary and secondary levels demands from courses dealing with Black History. As we have come full circle today in our general acceptance of being African People, whose ancestral homeland is Africa, we are also beginning to recognize that African American History Month celebrations and activities are great, but the contributions of African people must be emphasized throughout the year. There is no question that the setting aside of the month of February, as an extension of Dr. Woodson’s original idea of “Negro History Week” is something that we need to continue to support and institutionalize vigorously. However, we are quite clear that the real meaning of African American History Month in this era, is to take the spirit from all the celebrations, great speeches, great entertainment and festive events to establish as a major agenda item in our movement, the serious study of the contributions of African people 365 days a year. The basis of the current African Centered Education Movement, whose objective is to take control of the education of African people in America as we struggle to insure that the truth is taught in all institutions, in our communities and particularly in our schools. We must take the spirit of African American History Month to another level. Our history must be studied throughout the year!
Dead men live in Cook County Harold Washington is resurrected By Hynes campaign Enough is enough. These last few weeks of getting out the vote have been most unexpected. Take for example the Hynes ad featuring the late Mayor Harold Washington denouncing current Governor Pat Quinn. Blacks in Chicago are fed up with the White good old boys having the power to get “the vote” but this raising of a Black man from the dead to speak on their behest to bring them power over the people, well whoa Nellie! Blacks are tired of the high-handed usage of the living and the dead, who consistently give of themselves in life and death, to give those who may not have our best interest at heart what they want—our vote handed them on a silver platter, very few questions asked. It is sometimes amazing how Blacks will stand back and let things fall into place for others by way of their vote. Most of the political power is handed over to others because of the misunderstanding of the power of that vote. There are those who standby and allow the few who do engage themselves and demand their share of the pot that was set aside for them to scream the loudest after the seed monies for their betterment. However with this group its members manage to fail to realize the strength of their livelihood and how it is being used/misused. Blacks should look forward towards the next mayor of the city of Chicago. We should look for a person who is capable of moving

Maurice A. Clayton Chicago forward as was done with the election of Obama to the White House. Chicago needs to and is able to understand what is necessary to deal with her wants and needs. This person that we now call mayor is over and out of tune and out of synch. He is always close to being indicted for what his underlings are doing. Well this takes us back to today’s opening where it seems now that the dead are more useful than the living. Let us see what happens on February 2. The vote or the understanding of the power of the vote! We need to change our underwear that it is still filled with a stench that is truly foul. The smell from the fifth floor in city hall is understandable. Let us hope that these people, you know the small potatoes in our lives, are trying to leap forward from small jobs to positions that allow them to bring a better quality of life to the people. God bless the upcoming elections!

GET OUT AND VOTE On Election Day, February 2, Ima wants every person reading this paper to go cast your lot for the person you thank will best do for you what you thank ought to be done. Ima got beat across the head with a billy club back in 1958 trying to register her 3rd husband to vote—and he was blind, couldn’t read and smelled like pissy sheets six days from wash day. Now if Ima had to take this asswhupping trying to get us some rights the least you can do is go to the polls and do something that’s free. Plus that blind, pissy Negro left me in 1959 when they started allowing Black men to marry Chinese women up in Oregon. While Ima would like you to vote for every Negro name on the ballot—especially them judges—be advised that some of them bougie Niccas ain’t no good—and we think you ought to know who they are. So do your research and vote with some sense. Polls close at 7 PM and that is not on CPT either! -ImaHERE’S HAROLD? Looks like Pat Quinn is gonna need a leprechaun, 10 four leaf clovers and a boat load of shamrocks to help him win the Democratic nomination for governor. Ole’ Ima was almost set to cast my lot for the Bald Eagle when a voice from the dead spoke loud and clear and told me not too. That TV commercial was like getting knocked upside the head with a two-by-four and one thang is certain and that is Pat Quinn got a big ass head. It was like Harold came back from the great by and by just to give us this spiritual message. And one thang about Black folk is we don’t plays with no dead people—and one thang is for sho Harold Washington is surely dead. The other thang for sho’ is Black folk still follow their dead heroes. Everybody know if Martin Luther King, Jr., was still alive he’d still be fighting nappy-headed, pouty mouth preachers and their white handlers, but ever since he done gone on, we done lifted him up to the right hand of de’ Lord. Befo’ Black folks make any important decisions they always consult the words of MLK, Malcolm X and in this town Harold Washington. The Chicago Crusader
THE CHATTERBOX
And if we can’t find nothing they said to support our positions we go and make the stuff up. “Dr. King once said; you know Brother Malcolm taught us; and Harold told me 10 minutes before’ he died…” You know stuff like that. For the past 20 years Chicago Negroes been mourning de lost of the city’s first chitlin’ eating mayor so much so we ain’t been right since. So imagine our gladness and shock to see him live and in color on the TV. For more than two decades it has been long known that the only name next to Jesus that carry any weight in this town is Harold Washington and it was a stroke of genius to resurrect him again to tell us how he had to kick Quinn to the curb like a hooker with a bad back. Looks like Danny Hynes figured this fact out just in time and used the ghost of Harold to help him ease on down the road to victory. Not even the Negroes on Quinn’s plantation like Bobby Hush and Danny “Moonie Lovin’” Davis will make Negro voters ignore the powerful words coming out of de mayor’s mouth. The Mexicans might follow little Luis if they wanna, but them Puerto Ricans got enough Black in ‘em to know when somebody playing games. And ain’t nobody but white women listening to Jan Schakowsky so she don’t count. That commercial was like a jolt of Metamucil. Ima coulda swore at the end of that commercial she even heard Harold even talk about Quinn’s mama and threaten to pimp slap him. We know also ain’t dumb enough to think it was Hyne boy out there digging up our kinfolk at Burr Oak. That prize goes to four Negro suspects with holes in their pockets. And seeing all Pat
Quinn did as Lt. Governor when Rod Black-oh-whatever was in office was go ’round to cemeteries, how come Mr. Reformer didn’t notice the foolishness going on out there—-unless of course he never went to Black cemeteries. One more thing you ought to know: In case Baldy is wondering why Black folk ain’t too upset about what Hynes daddy did back in the 1980s it is because of this: One thang Negroes respect is an outand-out racist. See at least we know who we foolin’ with. The fact that Hynes daddy let everybody in the town know that he was feeling no love for Harold, wasn’t the issue at all. We could care less what white folks thought about our guy. It’s the white folk who pretend to love dark meat but really hate us are the ones we got issue with. With Quinn Black folks know they ain’t got too much coming—-soon as he became governor he fired a lot of Negroes from their state job; he attacked Roland “Runnin’” Burris; he got rid of Carol Adams; and he let Poochie out of prison so he can rob us some more.
counting. But, damn! Somebody give Rush a spit bucket so he can spit that cud juice in it and then maybe Ima can understand what the hell he is talkin’ bout. He sounded like he had a mouth full of raw mountain oysters and beef stew as he was trying to tell me to ignore Harold Washington and give this incompetent Irish bald-head a fouryear job. Pat Quinn must be the one whose is desperate if Hush Mouth and Jesse Jackson Senior are the only Negroes in the town who he can get to make calls for him. You can’t understand neither one of them. One is rhyming all day and making your repeat after him every two seconds and the other is muttering to himself and mispronouncing every other word. One of my friends, Gertell, tell me she got a call from that snotty-nose, rat fink with the gastric bypass. She said she tried to cuss him out but realized midway through that it was just a recording. Do the opposite of whatever these people tell you—because you can best believe there’s something in it for them and it don’t include Y-O-U! -Ima-
HUSH YO MOUTH THE DEFIANT ONE Speaking of Bobby Rush: Ima was sitting by the window one night minding everybody else’s business when her phone rang loud and clear on a Tuesday night. Lo and behold on the other line was some mumbling, incoherent, slurred-speech Negro politician/preacher trying to trick me. Ima started to hang up until she realized it was the congressman from the first district. Now, Ima don’t be talkin’ bout no sick folk, cause she been battling gout for 62 years and

My, my, my. Who would have thought State Rep. Monique Davis has a thing for statutes of naked ladies. Not only is she allegedly holed up in her South Side office where she owes taxpayers nearly a half million dollars in rent, but she is also holding hostage a figurine that taxpayers bought to decorate a Black college. University. The artwork is a 500pound life-size replica of a Black female slave standing whose showing a whole lot of T&A and aint necessarily looking too downtrodden. The piece was created by some white man named David Parvin and was denounced eight years by art watchers in St. Louis as being nothing but a piece of high-end porn. The folk in St. Louie said: Her floor-length dress has been unbuttoned to expose her centerfoldperfect breasts. Unbuttoned, mind you, not ripped — the details matter — and seven buttons, signifying a stripping that had to have taken some time. Her eyes are closed — defiantly, you‘re told; the piece is called “Defiance” — but it’s a sensual mask of full lips and fine cheekbones. Walk around behind her, and what is most alarming is not the scars on her back, evidence of a whipping, but the way the fabric of her dress drapes to reveal the cleavage of her behind. “Defiance” is the nastiest form of pornography, the kind that veils itself in the cloak of socially conscious fine art (not unlike the atrocious Monster’s Ball).” Now why would Ms. Davis want to have some life-sized naked woman in her public office like that? We know she could use a little makeup to help her catch a man, but has it gotten that bad, that she got to sit around and stare at a nudie all day? What she doing with that thang? Please give it back to Wayne Watson so some young college boys can get their jolly’s off while in history class. On a real note, Ima thank it’s a shame that the state could not find a Negro sculpture to do a replica of a Black slave woman—at least it might have had some dignity and class.

There's nothing quite so cozy on a winter evening as sitting before a crackling fire-as long as it's safe. *** First rule is to keep combustibles away from the fireplace. No throw rugs on the hearth or newspapers stacked nearby for tinder. The fire screen should completely cover the face of the fireplace.
*** Has the chimney been checked for creosote buildup? It should be cleaned whenever the creosote layer is 1/4 inch thick anywhere on chimney walls. (Use a mirror to look into the flue.) *** Kindling is best to start a fire, better than newspaper, which can send up burning ashes that can ignite a dirty chimney. Never, never use coal or flammable liquids to start the fire. Install a spark screen atop the chimney to keep hot sparks off the roof. *** Don't go to bed or leave a fireplace unattended, unless you cover it with ashes. Don't try to put out the fire with water; cool water on the firebrick can crack the lining.

BUSINESS Payday Lending Debate Heats Up at NNPA Mid-Winter Conference Race Disparities Cited by CRL, Denied by Advance America By Charlene Crowell NNPA Financial Writer (NNPA) - Before a packed audience of publishers, representatives of the payday lending industry and the Center for Responsible Lending debated whether this small dollar loan was helpful credit or a debt trap. The engaging debate, part of the recent National Newspapers Publishers’ Mid-Winter Conference held in Charlotte, North Carolina drew candid comments from presenters and publishers alike. The spirited dialogue drew two distinct positions. On the one hand, the Center for Responsible Lending, a non-partisan, nonprofit research and policy organization strongly contended that payday loans were predatory in nature and targeted minority consumers. By contrast, Advance America, one of the nation’s largest corporate payday lenders adamantly maintained that race had nothing to do with store locations; rather in their view, economics alone drove site selection. Advance America also maintains that payday loans are a response to people living paycheck to paycheck, while CRL countered that it is the loan product itself that causes families to live paycheck to paycheck, due to the two-week term that depletes checking accounts. Willie Green, speaking on behalf of Advance America noted that annually 19 million people use the services of 22,000 payday stores nationwide, representing a $4 billion enterprise. Maintaining that the average payday customer takes out only eight loans within a 12 to 18 month period, Green claimed a demand for the product because Americans “live paycheck to paycheck.” Most importantly, the former payday store owner alleged that those who criticize the industry “haven’t done their homework”. However, in a presentation by Keith Corbett, executive vicepresident for the Center for Responsible Lending, clearly stated that the APR for a typical twoweek loan spanned 391-521 percent. Adding that the ability to repay a loan is not a factor in the industry’s approval process, borrowers only needed to present personal identification, a checking account, and income from a job or governmental benefits. Agreeing with earlier remarks to publishers by Rev. Jesse Jackson, Corbett characterized payday lenders as ‘back-door lending’ The Chicago Crusader
while the industry entered the ‘front door’ of banks to borrow funds, calling for reforms in both industries. Citing the contrasting percentages between percent of population and percent of loan transactions, Corbett clearly saw a strong connection between the industry locating in primarily minority communities while Green maintained that store locations were based on economics and not race. Terming payday loans as a “debt trap” that strips wealth from communities of color, Corbett quoted Dan Feehan, CEO of Cash America as saying “And the theory in the business is you’ve got to get that customer in, work to turn him into a repetitive customer, long-term customer, because that’s really where the profitability is.” Corbett additionally cited from a recent Advance America Prospectus, published data that documents how 90 percent of payday loans go to borrowers with five or more loans, while only two percent of loans go to borrowers who take out their loan, pay it off in
Keith Corbett
two weeks, and do not need to borrow again. Quantifying the effects of payday lending in the nation’s most populous state, California, Corbett shared how $247 million is annually drained from California’s communities of color. Moreover, this loan volume is gained from the patronage of Native Americans, Latinos and African Americans who together represent 65 percent of all loans in California, despite the fact that these three minority communities account for only 35 percent of the adult population.
Similar findings were shared for Texas and Arizona. For example Latinos and African Americans together represent 39.6 percent of the Lone Star state’s adult population; yet they account for 77 percent of all payday loans. In Arizona’s Pima County, Native Americans, Latinos and African Americans are 35 percent of the adult population yet take out 65 percent of loans. Corbett also noted two other startling trends: Payday borrowers are twice as likely to default on credit cards or file for bankruptcy; 25-50 percent of borrowers will default in the first 12 months. When questioned by Robert Bogle, publisher of the Philadelphia Tribune, as to what the annual percentage rate of a payday loan was, Green responded by citing a $15 fee per $100 over a two-week period. Despite repeated attempts to learn from the industry its average APR, as well as other publishers seeking to learn the cost of rollover fees when loans could not be fully paid, Green continued to cite the two-
week fee. Through the work of CRL and other advocates, consumer protection efforts have led 15 states and the District of Columbia to impose a two-digit percentage rate cap. In 2002 and reaffirmed in 2005, the NAACP passed a national resolution against predatory loans with triple digit interest rates. At the organization’s 100th Annual Convention in 2009, Ben Jealous, NAACP President said, “The top rate in share cropping was 40 percent. The top rate at some of the wild cat payday lenders can go up to 1,000. And at the corporate ones, it’s a little over 400. For the military, they’re restricted to 36 percent. So it’s either as bad as loan sharing or ten times worse than share cropping; but either way, it shall not stand much longer.” Charlene Crowell is the Cent e r f o r R e s p o n s i b l e L e n d i ng ’ s c o m m u n i c a t i o n s m a n a g e r fo r State Policy and Outreach. ENTERTAINMENT: CHICAGO STYLE By Elaine Hegwood Bowen, MSJ
It’s Complicated It’s Complicated is a fun film starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin in a story about a divorced couple who, after 10 years of being apart, decide to see if there’s any flame left. Streep plays Jane and Baldwin plays her ex-husband, Jake. And although Jake is remarried to a younger, sexier looking woman, when Jane and Jake are holed up in a hotel for their son’s college graduation, they sneak and start an affair together. Well, I don’t know if it can be called an affair, since the two were previously married. The movie is funny but also sheds a look on the issue of a divorced couple, especially when the husband has abandoned the marriage for a younger woman. Jake isn’t too happy with his bride; she has an obnoxious young son, who seems to run the entire family. She’s also pining to have another child—a request that sends Jake to the fertility clinic quite often. Jake and Jane have three grown children, along with a fiancé of one of the daughters. Jane tries to keep the affair from her children, but is caught one day, while checking into a posh hotel with Jake. Martin plays Adam the architect who’s building a wing onto Jane’s house, so that she can have a larger kitchen; as she’s a pasty chef with her own bakery and restaurant. Adam thinks he likes Jane, but he’s going through a fresh divorce and is really guarded about entering into any new relationship. “It’s Complicated” goes along smoothly, and I was enjoying the theme, until Jake gets too arrogant and possessive, believing that Jane has nothing better to do than to sit and wait for him. He is totally enjoying her new found sexuality and freedom, which he keeps commenting on, and he’s ready to carry on a long-term affair, since they both are having fun. But Jane is torn between the fact that now she’s the other woman and she’s keeping this from her children. She’s also torn, because she starts falling for Adam, who can’t seem to get a break. The movie is funny, nonetheless; there are scenes where Adam and Jane smoke pot and are high out of their minds, and of course, Jake gets jealous because he’d given Jane the pot so the two of them could smoke together.
MERYL STREEP AND Alec Baldwin have a drink at the bar right before they start their affair. Finally, their cover is blown, and the two of them must confess to their children. And although they are grown, the children are put off by the entire thing; because they have never really gotten over their parents’ divorce. “It’s Complicated” is really a look at the complicated situations that can arise when two people
engage in a love affair, even if the two people have previously been married. And while we’re used to Martin playing the funny man; he’s mostly serious in this film. But as I said, it’s a great movie that examines grown-up issues for a change. Instead of all the teeny-bopper fare that’s playing at the movies.

Chicago kids learn good oral health habits from tooth wizard, PlaqueMan Delta Dental of Illinois provides free theatre program to improve kids’ oral health Chicago kindergarten through third-grade students learned how to take care of their teeth and the importance of good oral health from Tooth Wizard, as he battled his nemesis PlaqueMan, during Delta Dental of Illinois’ “Land of Smiles” program at Chicago-area schools last week. From January through April, the show will visit over 30 Chicago-area schools. Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease affecting children in Illinois.1 According to a survey by the Illinois Department of Public Health, 59 percent of Chicago third graders have experienced dental cavities. Among those children, 32 percent have untreated cavities and 5 percent have cavities that need urgent dental treatment.2 “Since most tooth decay is preventable, we know it is important to start educating children about good oral health habits at an early age,” said Tom Colgan, president and CEO of Delta Dental of Illinois. “This program inspires a lifetime of good oral health habits and helps further our mission to improve the oral health of the communities we serve.” “Land of Smiles,” sponsored by the not-for-profit Delta Dental of Illinois, is a highly entertaining theatrical performance in which costumed characters Tooth Wizard and PlaqueMan educate kids on how to get rid of what Tooth Wizard refers to as that “icky, sticky, slimy, grimy, sort of yellowy, greeny gunk” – known as plaque – which causes cavities and damages gums.
During the show, student volunteers helped Tooth Wizard and PlaqueMan demonstrate proper brushing techniques and how to floss using an oversized set of teeth and toothbrush. The characters also discuss good and bad foods for teeth and why it is important to visit the dentist at least twice a year. To further improve their oral health, kids who attended the program received a “dental treat” bag containing a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss and an oral health brochure explaining the importance of good oral health. Also, each school received a “Land of Smiles” curriculum kit to help reinforce good oral health habits with students. The kit includes visual and audio educational tools, including a 12minute video, an audiocassette tape, books and an oversized mouth model and toothbrush to demonstrate proper brushing techniques. This year, nearly 30,000 kindergarten through third-grade students in 100 Illinois elementary schools will enjoy the “Land of Smiles” program. The program has reached a total of 100,000 students in Illinois over the past three years. Delta Dental of Illinois (DDIL) is a not-for-profit dental service corporation specializing in providing comprehensive, easy-touse and cost-effective benefits to 1.6 million employees and family members in more than 3,600 employee groups throughout Illinois. Based in Lisle, Ill., DDIL offers an array of extensive nationwide network-based managed fee-for-service, PPO and dental HMO plans.
