Public Transit funding is ra cist, a ccord ing to suit By J. Coyden Palmer A federal class-action lawsuit was filed January 6th against the State of Illinois, the Illinois Department of Transportation, Metra and the RTA charging that the mass transit funding scheme adopted in 1983 discriminates against African American and Hispanic passengers. During a downtown press conference on the day the suit was filed, lawyers and community leaders spoke of how plaintiffs in the suit face longer travel times, fewer travel options and pay more than residents of more affluent communities. The suit, which was filed on behalf of two plaintiffs by the law firm of Futterman, Howard, Ashley, Watkins & Weltman, contends that the funding scheme for public transportation in the RTA region has unfairly favored Metra and its predominantly white ridership at the expense of the CTA and it’s predominantly minority ridership. “I was astounded when I looked into this case,” said Attorney Stewart Weltman, whose firm researched the case for six months before filing suit. “The CTA cuts always have a disproportionate affect on minority communities. But through this

lawsuit, we hope the courts can adjourn the current funding formula and make it more equitable.” Weltman added that poorer people in

collar counties like Kane and McHenry face the same issues as those in Chicago and suburban Cook County. He said that there may be a separate lawsuit in the fu-

ture. Others complain that those communities represented by the plaintiffs have (Continued on page 3)

She was super fashionable.” And Bates took care to design avant-garde pieces such as python and crocodile skirts that personified Johnson’s style. Bates said it was an honor to design for a woman who helped change the way the world saw Black fashion with the icon Ebony’s Fashion Fair Show. “I was really excited especially so early on in

things, a visionary, and a man before his time, a person admired for his accomplishments and a standard for others to try to meet, then, exceed. Those are all the words and phrases used in describing Billy “The Kid” Harris, a basketball legend and Chicago native who died after suffering a stroke on January 3rd. Harris starred at Dunbar before going on to Northern Illinois and

playing professionally overseas and in the American Basketball Association. A man dubbed the best “Playground Baller Ever,” Harris’ legend around the Chicago area among his peers is well known. Those who played with and against him are saddened by his loss and say the city has lost a man who not only loved basketball, but Chicago and family. “Billy may not have gotten all of

the recognition as a Michael Jordan or Dr. J., but make no mistake about it, he was an unbelievable player,” said another Chicago basketball legend, Sonny Parker. “To me he was a game innovator. couture fashion to an overlooked Black consumer base and for providing a platform for Black designers to showcase their wares. Johnson died Sunday, January 3rd in her Chicago home. She was 93. Johnson was the widow of publishing great John Johnson, founder of Ebony and Jet magazines. John Johnson died in 2005. Eunice Johnson had a direct impact on fashion, Bates said. She said Fashion Fair allowed women to personally see the latest fashion trends from across the Atlantic that often could only be admired in fashion magazines. “(The Ebony) Fashion Fair was actually the vehicle used in the African-American community to show fashion-forward women what was being done overseas,” Bates said. “She brought so much of that to the states when she actually did the shows.” That feat earned Johnson, who served as the show’s producer and director, a page in history. She became the first Black ever to purchase from overseas fashion houses, which allowed women to view fashions from renowned Italian, French, British and Japanese designers. The show also featured Black designers, including Stephen Burrows, James Daugherty, B. Michael and Quinton de Alexander. The Ebony Fashion Fair became the pre-eminent stage to expose Black designers to a wider audience, Bates said, adding The Ebony Fashion Fair is the only vehicle of the magnitude that shows Black designers. “It gave them a vehicle that they needed to show their goods outside of their own community,” she said. “If you made it into (The Ebony) Fashion Fair, your things would not only be featured in the magazines, but it would be featured all across the United States.” But The Ebony Fashion Fair never pigeonholed designers to a set style, but rather allowed them to showcase their unique artistry, said Bates, whose designs in the 1980s featured a lot of leather and tweed. The show was noted for featuring sheer camisoles that revealed

CSU News: Finney elected chairman of Board; employee arrested for theft By J. Coyden Palmer An accountant at Chicago State University was arrested December 31st and charged with stealing nearly $4,000 in cash from the south side university over a threemonth period. Her arrest comes on the heels of the reelection of Trustee Rev. Leon Finney to Chairman of the Board despite the loud protests of students. A coalition of students blame Finney for the lack of transparency regarding CSU’s funding and fiscal management problems. During a meeting on December 14th, Finney was elected to serve again as Chairman of the Board. According to the governing rules, this is the last term Finney can serve on the Board. But serving any more time is not what many students wanted. Instead they would have preferred that Finney left the Board all together. In the spring of 2009 dozens of students and faculty members called for the removal of the entire Trustee Board. Citing a lack of oversight on financial matters and arrogance when dealing with the student population, many on the CSU campus see Finney as a problem not a solution to the myriad of challenges facing the school. Several outspoken students told the

the recession. Fannie Mae filed a $26.3-million foreclosure suit on a 587-unit portfolio of south side affordable housing units owned by a venture that includes Woodlawn Community Development Corporation and the community development arm of Lakeside Bank. Finney said he is working to resolve the problems alleged in the lawsuit. He was hoping to create a new affordable housing paradigm. That will be difficult now he admitted, in the Crain’s article. The Crusader attempted to reach him for comment regarding the student protests against him at CSU but was unsuccessful. Rev. Leon Finney Crusader they found Finney’s selection “absurd” and will continue their efforts to remove him. “We will continue to publicly call for the ouster of Reverend Finney,” said student Michael O’Connor, spokesperson for the student group Students Working for Accountability and Transparency (SWAT). “We will continue to call on the governor to do the right thing for CSU. The latest reason why we think Reverend Finney isn’t suitable is the $26 million foreclosure suit filed against The Woodlawn Organization, a group that Rev-

erend Finney runs. If he can’t run that organization with a level of financial responsibility, what makes them think he can run CSU effectively?” According to a report in a November edition of Crain’s Chicago Business, TWO bought several properties in hopes of turning them into affordable housing units for low-income families. But the project was troubled from the start as many of the properties were in worse shape than TWO thought and current residents started defaulting on rent payments during

He said the suit is not a political fight, but rather about getting access to things all Americans deserve. McGhee had a more detailed thought on why she decided to file suit. “As a long time resident of the Bronzeville neighborhood, I have been discouraged and frustrated by public transportation options offered to my community,” said McGhee. “Reductions in CTA routes in my area have become common place over the years. Access to Metra lines is essentially non-existent. Despite paying my ‘fare share’, I have to leave my home hours in advance to reach my children’s schools, my job or other activities. With transportation at the heart of access to schools, work and life’s opportunities, I now turn to the legal system for relief.” Attorney Weltman was asked by reporters why a lawsuit like this took so long to be filed if the violations are as egregious as his analysis found. He said because there is little money to be made by law firms and these cases are so difficult to prove, most law firms will not touch them. Asked why he decided to move forward with a suit given those challenges he said: “Because it is the right thing to do.”

“Once again there seems to be controversy surrounding Reverend Finney,” O’Connor said.

The news of a CSU employee being arrested over the holiday break does not help the public’s image of the university. Laverne Sanders, 52, of the 7600 block of Calumet was released on $100,000 bail after prosecutors alleged she pocketed cash she received while working in the University’s Cashier’s office. Between April and August of last year, according to prosecutors, Sanders collected nearly $20,000 in student payments. Almost $4,000 of that was cash. She was responsible for depositing all of the monies, but instead, allegedly only deposited the checks, according to prosecutors. Prosecutors allege that Sanders admitted to University officials of taking $800 but stated she did not know where the rest of the money was.

U.S. Census Bureau launches “Portrait of America” Road Tour 2010 Census Portrait of America Road Tour hits the frigid road Chicago launch precedes upcoming launches in Indiana and Wisconsin The U.S. Census Bureau’s Portrait of America Road Tour is the largest, most ethnically and culturally diverse road tour ever conducted by the Census Bureau. On January 4, it began by stopping at high-profile celebrations, sporting events and hundreds of community gatherings and will continue these activities through mid-April. Covering more than 150,000 miles, this interactive road show and exhibition is promoting the 2010 Census by travelling across America in an effort to reach out to the diverse U.S. population and historically hard-to-count audiences. The Chicago Region launched its own regional Road Tour in Illinois on January 4 at 7 a.m. outside the Walgreens store, 111 South Halsted Street (at Monroe Street) in Chicago’s West Loop. Despite single-digit temperatures, this festive media event featured: a wide range of 2010 Census-related activities; government representatives; athletes, prominent citizens and entertainers; and Population, the Chicago regional vehicle. January 5, Population began its exclusive travel to the three states of the Chicago region to educate the citizens of Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin about the 2010 Census, and encourage everyone to complete and return the 10question census form when it arrives in March. In the coming

Saturday, January 9, 2010

months, individual Road Tour launches will be held with Population in Indiana and Wisconsin. Information on the specific dates, times and locations for these festive media events will be released shortly. Population is one of 12 regional vehicles—in addition to the national vehicle Mail It Back — that are providing entertaining, educational and interactive experiences designed to raise awareness about the 2010 Census. These 13 Road Tour vehicles are presenting the American public with an engaging, interactive experience that brings the benefits of the 2010 Census to life, as well as an opportunity to: • learn about the census • learn about the benefits a complete count can bring to communities everywhere • view a larger-than-life sample of a 2010 Census form • learn how collected information is used • contribute stories and photos to the Portrait of America project to explain why “I count!” • view messages from other Road Tour participants. For more information about the 2010 Census and the Road Tour, and to track each of the vehicles via an interactive map, please visit www.2010census.gov. Social media users can also follow the Road Tour on Twitter (@2010Portrait), Facebook, MySpace, Flickr and YouTube (/uscensusbureau). Emissions from the 2010 Census Portrait of America Road Tour will be completely offset by the Carbonfund.org, which has agreed to donate carbon credits to offset the Road Tour’s 202.8 metric ton carbon footprint. 3

EDITORIAL

OPINION

AVATAR-ART IMITATES LIFE Usually, the Crusader does not do editorial movie reviews. We’ll make an exception, however, with the movie Avatar, which was released on Friday, December 18, and is in the process of breaking box office records. This movie is in a special category by itself. Every now and then, a piece of popular culture comes along that shifts paradigms. Avatar is in this category, and it is a statement on life that brings truth glaringly into the arena of popular culture. During the past several weeks it has grossed over $1 billion worldwide, only the fifth movie ever to hit that mark. Very often, when a new movie hits the theaters, income tends to peak the first week and taper off afterwards. Not so with Avatar, an innovative animated feature that has captured the imaginations and minds of diverse audiences. It is the kind of movie that leaves theater-goers in their seats, hypnotically watching the credits scroll, lapping up every bit of a special moment in film history. What is so special about Avatar? For one, the animation is fantastic! The filmmakers were able to use special techniques in order to avoid the “dead eyes” that are so characteristic of realistic animation. The scenery is quite imaginative also, with floating mountains and more, and the characters are visually stunning. The special value of Avatar, however, does not just lie in the visuals and special effects - it is the story line that lends power to the visual narrative. Usually, when a snippet of popular culture captures the collective imagination of the masses, there is some element of truth that strikes a nerve in the public’s consciousness. When viewing Avatar, it becomes obvious that the movie has a lesson for all thinking people. It is about the perennial struggle between the powerful and the seemingly powerless. It is David and Goliath in blueface. The movie chronicles the adventures of a group of mercenaries from Earth in the 22nd Century who have landed on a moon called Pandora to mine it for a precious, wildly expensive substance. Inconveniently, the indigenous people, humanoids called Na’avi, happen to live on the land where the mother lode of the substance is found. The mercenaries are determined to remove the people from their land in order to take what they want, by any means necessary. What is instructive in this film is the attitude taken toward the natives - they are disregarded as savages and are targeted for destruction if they won’t move from their homeland. The language in the movie script, including the term “Shock and Awe,” conjures up images of the War in Iraq, and in places mirrors the language that was used to justify toppling the late Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein, by the previous U.S. presidential administration. Furthermore, if you use a little imagination, you can substitute any group of people on Earth who have had their homeland commandeered by others who were more powerful in a militaristic sense. The colonization of the African continent is just one of these scenarios that comes to mind. The movie has a surprising ending, and there is a lesson to be learned, which involves the power of spirit over aggression. Imperialists everywhere should check this movie out - there is definitely a message for them, as well as for any group that feels powerless in the face of oppression. African Americans should take especial note. 4

Responding in A hateful/discriminatory Manner Must Not Be An Outcome Of The “Christmas Day” Near Miss Dear Editor: As Chairman and Commissioner of the Chicago Commission on Human Relations, I am truly thankful that a tragedy was averted by quick human reactions and a malfunctioning device. America avoided the potential loss of citizens of all races and creeds who

engaged in travel to be with loved ones during the holiday season. The potential tragedy that would have resulted from the alleged bomber’s success adds to the increased fears for all Americans who travel in their daily lives. While the effects of this near miss will be with us for some time, we must not allow hate to be the outcome of this incident. As human beings, we question who could have wished to do such a horrific act and for what reason? We demand swift justice, and the implementation of extreme measures to ensure the safety of the traveling public. This is understandable. However, what we cannot do is allow our emotions and our fear to color how we view members of certain communities. The single actor has been identified as a young Nigerian native who is also a Muslim. News stories also point out that his family, specifically his father a prominent Nigerian banker, who is also a Muslim was responsible for “putting humanity above family” in reporting his son’s entanglements with individuals who he believed had “extreme tendencies in Islam.” Clearly this young man whose actions, tainted by outside influences to his Nigerian upbringing, must not become “the singular face” of the over 150 million Nigerian nationals who are Muslims or Christians many of whom now call the United States

BEYOND THE RHETORIC

What we learned from Copenhagen By Harry Alford NNPA Columnist

Another world conference on Global Climate Change has come and gone. This time there appears to be no real progress made or res-

Harry C. Alford

olutions obtained. It was all a bunch of rhetoric, accusations and disagreements. Unlike the last big conference, Kyoto in 1992, there were no plans or direction decided on. The controversies or debates have not ended

or been resolved. In essence, there is no leadership and all of the subgroups appear to be moving in circles void of progress. In Kyoto, Europe ran the show with special interests like the Sierra Club, Greenpeace and others with their demands for immediate reductions in green house emissions regardless of the costs. What resulted was the United States, represented by zealots such as Al Gore accepted a “stacked deck” which weighted much of the pain and suffering to the people of America while others could keep their emissions growing. It was a no win situation for the world environment but a big cost being assessed to that hated entity, the United States. In the end, the agreement required the U.S. Senate to approve the Kyoto Protocol by an official vote. The Senate killed it by a vote of 97 – 1. President Clinton and his administration were quite naïve to think that we would agree to such an unfair arrangement. A lot has happened since Kyoto. For instance, the number one polluter in the world is not the United States but China. India, Mexico, Brazil and others are quickly moving up the pollution rankings

as their industries are starting to take form. Imagine this: China opens two new coal mines per week. So, it is not just the United States and Europe that bears watching; there are major players in all parts of the world. This change in the emission formulas has also brought on a serious form of irony. Since Kyoto, India, China and Brazil have joined forces and proclaim to represent the Third Word and all developing nations. Like school yard bullies, they put the smaller guys under their protection and fiercely represent “their” interests. They attack the United States, Russia, Japan, Europe and others with verbal attacks and stupid proposals demanding billions of dollars in aid and reparations against the small developing nations they represent. The major irony is that they, too, are generating green house gases as much, if not more, than the very nations they are pointing their fingers at. Also, when it comes to rain forest shrinkage no nation has done more damage than Brazil. How dare they point their finger at us and demand reparations and billions of dollars in aid. Equally detestable are the special

interests who seek a way to make big dollars despite the worth of what they offer. People, like Al Gore, have made some serious money talking about the horrors of climate change even though certain “facts” have yet to be proven. Companies like General Electric and the Wall St. Hustlers are fanning the “flames” of Cap and Trade as if it is something holy rather then something that is going to make them some quick bucks. The whole thing has become a “Ball of Confusion.” Needed in this issue are good, sound science and some dynamic strategic planning. We should all come together with the purpose of finding out just what is going on; structuring a plan with reasonable milestones and proceed aggressively. There shouldn’t be any shakedowns or reasons to demonstrate and fight each other. The world should come as one and work towards new and better technology. Environmental pirates, crooks and opportunists should be dealt with firmly. New and better technology should be immediately shared and deployed as it becomes available. This shouldn’t be about making big money or having the power curve shift more to your na-

tion’s favor. It is about keeping Mother Earth safe and a place conducive to a good future for generations to come. There is no place for politics or special interests trying to get the upper hand regardless of the costs and integrity of the findings. Let us look at this so that human beings in the Congo, Sudan, etc. are not exploited and their precious land is not destroyed in the name of quick money. We can invent and develop new technology that can produce needed energy, viable shelter, clean water and quality food for the 9 billion people who reside on this earth. Let’s resolve to serve all and apply our vast skills towards the quality of life. Such a worldwide attitude will end a lot of stupid violent conflicts and reduce the vast amount of suffering that is applied to certain areas of the world. Copenhagen showed us that we are fractionalized and very much disorganized. A call for good altruistic leadership is needed.

Wish List for 2010 and Beyond By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist

PRESIDENT OBAMA stops gutting his domestic programs in an effort to appease Republicans who have no intention of supporting him on anything. GOP leaders are lower than a snake’s belly and it is useless to try to satisfy them or their No.1 ally, Joethe-Traitor Lieberman. President Obama correctly states that he is the president of all of the people. And that includes African Americans. We’re not asking him to be a Black president, just a president who realizes the needs of Blacks should be targeted just as he targeted the needs of Wall Street, banks and the automotive industry. DEMOCRATS exercise the power they have accumulated. With a 60-40 edge in the United States Senate, counting two independents who regularly caucus with Democrats, a 257-178 margin in the House of Representatives, and a Democrat in the White House, it’s time for De-

mocrats to stop acting like wimps. After pleading for power, including elevating a record number of African Americans to committee chairs and subcommittee chairs, Democrats finally have power. They need to act like it. TH E CON GRE SS ION A L BLACK CAUCUS follows through on its threat to oppose major bills that do not improve the plight of the masses. After threatening to vote against the health care bill if it did not include the public option, members of the CBC are poised to support a bill likely to emerge from conference without that key provision. If President Obama can placate a couple of conservatives in order to save the bill, he should feel heat from progressives unwilling to roll over in order to pass a watered down version of the bill. Sadly, more is done to capitulate to one or two conservatives than to dozens of African Americans serving in Congress. REPUBLICANS revert to the big tent philosophy that characterized the party before it became captive of Right-wing zealots. At its best, the GOP embraced liberal New York City Mayor John Lindsay, progressive Senators

Now that we have ushered in not only a new year, but a new decade, I want to share my New Decade’s wish list. I hope:

George E. Curry Lowell Weicker of Connecticut and Edward Brooke of Massachusetts along with conservative GOP lawmakers. It also embraced former Assistant Secretary of Labor Art Fletcher and Transportation Secretary Bill Coleman, two ardent supporters of affirmative action. It now appears that in order for any African American to be accepted by the GOP leadership, he or she must be a vocal critic of affirmative action. Contrary to GOP assertions, Blacks are not in love with the Democratic Party. Rather, Republicans who routinely op-

pose programs that benefit people of color offer no viable alternative. CIVIL RIGHTS LEADERS return to being outsiders instead of insiders. Many of our leaders have become shills for the Obama administration. Instead of presenting the usual “Black Agenda,” their top agenda item these days seem to be getting an invitation to some White House event. And when they don’t get invited, they profess to be personally offended. Jesse Jackson, for example, recently whined about not getting invited to a White House conference on jobs. In the eyes of many Blacks, Jackson rendered himself irrelevant when he threatened to cut off certain body parts of the president to be. For Blacks already suffering from Jesse Fatigue, that was the last straw. And no one should blame Obama for not wanting Jesse Jackson around to rain on his parade or, even worse, neuter him. HEADS OF BLACK PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS finally assume the leadership role in their area of expertise. We expect too much from our civil rights organizations and too little from our professional organizations. The National Bar AssociaSaturday, January 9, 2010

tion should lead the way on criminal justice matters. The National Medical Association should present our collective position on health care and racial disparities. The National Association of Black Journalists should lead the charge against racism in the media. The Urban Financial Services Coalition should provide the last word in our community on financial literary. Of course, this would necessarily lead to the emergence of some fresh, new voices. And that would be a good thing for our community. THE JOSHUA GENERATION – the young leaders-inwaiting – should find another name. I can understand their wanting to put some distance between them and the various icons who poses as the Moses of the Civil Rights Movement, but they should remember that Joshua never reached the Promised Land. So why aspire to be Joshua and cut your trip short? Secondly, Joshua died at the age of 110. Therefore, Joshua is not synonymous with youth. Young people and not-so-young people such as Al Sharpton should stop complaining that the Jesse Jack(Continued on page 15) 5

COMMENTARY In the New Year, Let Us Worrill’s World Grow With the Work By Dr. Conrad W. Worrill

The title of the book, edited by Dr. Raymond A. Winbush, the Director of the Institute for Urban Research at Morgan State University is, Should America Pay? In February 2001, Dr. Winbush, who was formerly the Director of Fisk University’s Race

Dr. Conrad Worrill Relations Institute, sponsored a two-day conference on slavery and reparations that brought together leading researchers, politicians, historians, and activists from throughout the country to dialogue on the issue of Reparations for African people in America. The conference was so successful that Dr. Winbush suggested that several of the presenters be included in a book he was proposing, which would entail several articles addressing the broad spectrum of the reparations debate in this country. Dr. Winbush has emerged as one of the leading scholar/activists in this country, and throughout the world, and has used his considerable skills as a researcher and writer to become the editor of this newly released book, Should America Pay? 6

What makes this book, perhaps one of the most significant and comprehensive books published on the issue of reparations for African people in America is that it thoroughly covers the broad spectrum of this movement in six sections with more than twenty articles that address: Part I – History and Reparations, Part II – Reparations and the Law, Part III – Voices For and Against Reparations, Part IV – Reparations and Grassroots Organizing, Part V – Reparations and Intervention, and Part VI – Historical Documents. The worldwide African Reparations Movement has become unified around the fact that the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade, Slavery, and Colonialism were Crimes Against Humanity. This unity impacted the United Nations World Conference Against Racism that was held in Durban, South Africa in August and September 2001, to officially declare in the conference outcome that the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade and Slavery was a Crime Against Humanity. The momentum gained by African people who participated in the United Nations World Conference Against Racism, particularly the Durban 400, organized by the December 12th Movement and the National Black United Front, led to “The Call” for the Millions For Reparations Mass Rally held in Washington, D. C. on August 17, 2002. More than fifty thousand African people from thirty-eight states and sixty-six cities participated in this all day rally, whose theme was “THEY OWE US.” Against this backdrop, Should America Pay? has now been published by Amistad: An Imprint of Harper Collins Publishers. In the introduction chapter Dr. Winbush writes, “As this book goes to press the reparations movement, historically considered a fringe issue in the American Black nationalist community, is now firmly established among various constituencies in the United States as well as in African communities around the world. Its ascendancy as an important social movement— I would argue the most important since Civil Rights— is confirmed by the amount of print space and air time the media devote to it.” Winbush continues by observ-

ing, “Though the movement is picking up speed, compensatory measures for Africans have been elusive because of the entrenchment of white supremacy in world politics that provided legal sanction for this crime against humanity.” Perhaps the most significant aspect of, Should America Pay? is the framework Dr. Winbush develops in his introductory chapter for understanding the rise of the Reparations Movement. Dr. Winbush explains, “A convergence of four groups provides a conceptual framework for understanding the current discussion of reparations: 1) grassroots organizers, 2) legislators, 3) attorneys, and 4) academics. A similar convergence of cooperation occurred during the late 1940s and resulted in what we now call the Civil Rights Movement.” In this context, Dr. Winbush makes the analogy that, “Reparations have a similar history. Grassroots organizations such as the December 12th Movement (D12), National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America (N`COBRA), and the National Black United Front (NBUF) worked closely with legislators in the mid-1980s. John Conyers Jr. (D-MI) for example, and collaborated with the Reparations Coordinating Committee (RCC), consisting of attorneys such as Willie Gary, Randall Robinson, and Johnnie Cochran and academics such as Manning Marble and Ron Walters.” Dr. Winbush writes, “These groups conversed long and hard with each other, and as you will see, these discussions were often heated and difficult. What united them, however, was a goal of pressing for reparations on a global level for African people.” I encourage those of you who are interested in learning more about the Reparations Movement to purchase this book. In my judgment, Should America Pay? will be the definitive textbook on the Reparations Movement with contributing chapters from Molefi Asanté, John Conyers Jr., Deadria C. Farmer-Paellmann, Wade Nobles, Adjoa A. Aiyetoro, Roger Wareham, and others. And yes, I even have two chapters in this most outstanding contribution to the continued rise of the Reparations Movement in America.

By Rev. Al Sharpton NNPA Columnist Every year, we all rally together with family and friends to celebrate the holidays and ring in the dawning of yet another new year, a new start and a new beginning. We diligently make resolutions – some minor, and others life altering – that we emphatically boast to each other and to ourselves. The harsh reality is that most of us either overreach in our goals, or simply don’t put forth the dedication, discipline and fortitude necessary to bring our resolutions to fruition. As we kick off a new decade, I challenge all of us to judiciously strive for the betterment of ourselves, our communities and for all of humanity. In line with establishing realistic, yet meaningful goals, I myself have set aside three major tasks that I must accomplish in this new beginning. For starters, I have to look no further than the organization that I’ve invested my heart and soul into – National Action Network. Continuously on the forefront of issues affecting the community, from police brutality to economic and political disenfranchisement to racial profiling, NAN is easily recognized as a voice for the voiceless. With 45 chapters in cities and towns around the country, NAN has become a staple for those seeking justice and equality. And although 45 chapters with limited resources is a rewarding sense of purpose, I have only begun. This year, we will take those 45 chapters and turn them into 100 chapters. As the work of social justice and civil rights continues to grow, we must grow with it. As the people continue to need our help, we must be more accessible to them. And wherever injustice occurs, we must be able to stand firmly in unison and take action. In order to achieve more, we must be in more locations. 100 chapters in 100 cities in 2010. This brings me to my second point: In order to effectively empower people, we must first and foremost educate them. Education itself can take root in a multitude of arenas from the classroom, to the simple altering of people’s mindsets. This year, I will continue the fight to perfect our education reform initiative for children in impoverished communities everywhere so that they too may have a fighting chance to make it in this world. An educated youth are an

engaged, powerful body that can use their strength for more constructive measures instead of blindly killing one another. In line with my push for education reform, I will work to end the nonsensical violence that is permeating our streets throughout the nation. The value of human life must be restored, and we all must tackle the underlying issues that create such anger and frustration among our children. Young people need to be armed with textbooks and pens, not guns and knives. And last, but by no means least, is the simple fact that it is time to deal with the overwhelming economic crisis we are in. Statistically, the national unemployment average wavers around 10 percent but we all know that in communities of color, that percentage is double – sometimes triple that - we can just look at Detroit. We need to come to terms with the blatant fact that people in our neighborhoods are suffering, businesses are suffering and the entire family structure is suffering. Severe unemployment and economic hardship almost always lead to increased crime, violence, depression and an overall sense of hopelessness. While politicians continue to battle over the best way forward, the people are hurting. When parents work three jobs in order to put dinner on the table, or when a mother must give up her meal in order for her children to eat, we have a serious problem. When shelters are forced to turn away folks due to overcrowding, and tent cities pop up everywhere because families have lost their homes, we are in a tremendous crisis. It’s time to create realistic, sustaining economic development, and time to support our businesses, our radio stations and our newspapers. It’s time to save ourselves before it’s too late. As 2010 begins amidst growing concerns on a host of issues, I ask all of us to take a deep look at what we do with our lives, what our purpose is and what we are doing to better tomorrow. The time is now. We cannot continue to turn a blind eye toward our obstacles, for the stakes couldn’t be higher. As I work to improve education, curb violence, create economic empowerment mechanisms and expand my organization, I ask you to think hard and think long before you choose your new year’s resolutions; for your decision could save someone’s future – and your own.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! It’s another year and the start of a new decade!! Halleluyer!! As Ma Dear would say. Each new year it gives us an opportunity to start anew, and Lawd knows after the celebration I tied on I needs to start new. Killer and I all but hung from the chandelier when the clock struck midnight; it’s lucky we were in our own basement apartment ’cause we were a sight the next morning. Oh well, thank goodness that is over. And now down to business. -ImaWHAT’S UP TOAD?? Ima been scratching her hed trying to figure out if Cook County Board President Todd Stroger really wants the job or what?? He is campaigning real strange if you ask me. He is beginning to be known as a NO SHOW in most quarters these days. The last straw however has to be the one where he called a press conference and he was the only one that did not show up . . . WHAT’S THAT ALL ABOUT??? Supporters of him can’t seem to answer the question, but some folks are saying if he doesn’t say something like I want your vote

Todd Stroger what’s up with you Todd? -ImaARROGANCE PERSONIFIED?? Folks are saying that President Barack Obama is a one-termer for various and sundry reasons, one of which “Mr. Cool Exterior” is showing the other side of the cool one. Now Ima has to admit that he has had more than his share of high drama since he took the oath of office almost one year to the day in 2009. He has been faced with a recession, high un-

employment, automobile and bank crises, housing foreclosures galore, two wars, and then on Christmas Day a near disaster had the bomb gone off on that flight from Amsterdam to Detroit. So if he seems a bit short tempered I guess we ought to understand, but the photo that has been circulating around of him in his tux and Joe Biden, his Vice President is hard to interpret but most agree that he seems to be showing his disdain of the VP by his body language and facial demeanor (how bout that word). In the ’hood we call it being po’ed, another nice way to put it, but he done po’ed a number of folks too. For one, him trying to continue to distance himself from US Black folks ain’t going over well in some quarters. Danny Glover dared to say it and he responded that Danny was just one actor and if he counted the ones that supported him Danny would be outnumbered. And then the response he has given to the Congressional Black Caucus members you would not expect since a few months ago he was one of them. And for those Black “diggitaries” that are po’ed ’cause they haven’t been invited to the White House and have not been a part of discussions regarding employment and such they be saying that it’s just arrogance personified. -ImaGATOR’S ON FACEBOOK

Yep, that’s right the Urban Translator aka as the Ghetto Translator now is on Facebook. Wow, and what a face it is!! It’s enough to stop an eight-day clock. Ima was invited but she has not joined his circle of friends

week endorsements began to come in for Terrence O’Brien who is the only white Democratic candidate for the spot and guess what all of the endorsers were. . . you guessed it white. Stay tuned!! -ImaIS THERE TROUBLE IN THE LAND?

Gator Bradely because one more face like the two of us would probably be too much for Facebook and it would be shut down. Besides it could be confused with the lineup photos that police depend on to try to catch some outlaws. By the way I saw a lady of the evening that resembled Gator down near 55th Street the other week, I wonder if she was a relative? Just wondering!! -ImaBLACK WHITE RACE The race for Cook County Board President is stacking up to be a black white thang! This

Folks are saying that Cheryle Jackson’s campaign is in trouble. Word reached Ima that there has been a change in her campaign hierarchy, which does not speak well for one who only have about a month to campaign before the election. Ima can’t help but be a feminist in this case, she’s pulling for the girl, but is she out manned, out financed in her quest for what should be a Black seat in the United States Senate? -ImaA NEW YOU VALLAS I happen to be flipping through the channels last week and lo and behold the announcer said that Paul Vallas was endorsing someone for Governor. But the person didn’t look like the Paul Vallas I used hang out with. He was sporting a beard and he looked real strange. Oh well, I guess his travels from Philadelphia to New Orleans call for a change. But who really cares who is supporting whom for Governor anyway?

BUSINESS A New Year’s Resolution for 2010: Finding Financial Freedom By Charlene Crowell NNPA Financial Writer Much of the research published by the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL) has revealed discrepancies in lending patterns in communities of color, most notably, Latinos and African-Americans. For example, in mortgage lending, CRL was one of the first research organizations to find that many people of color were steered to higher cost, subprime loans, even when they qualified for a lower-cost loan. As a result, today many African-Americans suffer disproportionately from foreclosures. Or consider research released this spring, on payday lending in California, Predatory Profiling that documents how payday lenders in this nation’s most populous state systematically target black and brown communities, draining nearly $247 million in fees alone each year. Even after controlling for income and other factors, payday lenders are 2.4 times more concentrated in California’s African-American and Latino Communities than they are in non-minority communities. Now, Native American leaders are also drawing attention to predatory lending, and urging Washington to enact significant reforms. According to a recent commentary published in Indian Country Today, an award-winning multimedia publisher of news, information, and imagery relevant to the indigenous people

of the Americas, predatory lending is denying economic security to Native families and their communities. A 2007 survey by this media organization determined that 73 percent of tribal housing counselors felt predatory lending was a problem in their communities, particularly citing refund anticipation loans and payday loans. The commentary, written by Michael E. Roberts, president of First Nations Development Institute, echoes the same sentiments of Black and Latino consumers. In part Roberts wrote, “Payday lenders aren’t really in business to help people deal with an occasional financial emergency. Instead, their business is built on the premise that an initial shortterm, high-interest loan can hook borrowers into a cycle of debt. For the payday lenders, that’s a sweet deal.” Moreover, just as African-American and Latino leaders have recently called for passage of the proposed federal Consumer Finance Protection Agency, Roberts’ voice and influence embrace CFPA as well. “Too many in our communities have been set back by lending practices that never should have been permitted”, he said, “Unfortunately, all of the factors that led to weak banking oversight in recent years remain firmly in place. Without the Consumer Financial Protection Agency, our financial security is likely to fall through the cracks. Again.” When America’s racial and eth-

nic minorities are all suffering from the same economic symptoms, it seems logical and practical for us to unite in the fight to overcome the economic disparities we all suffer. Historically, whenever common ground and cause have been defined and pursued, all of America has benefited. During the civil war, it took white abolitionists, and freed slaves to prick the conscience of America and preserve its union. In the mid-20th century civil rights era, progressive whites and Jews stood with African-Americans to fight for a series of social and educational reforms. And in the late 20th century, when gaming became an economic development strategy for many tribal nations, the political clout of Native Americans grew in proportion to the tax revenues generated by casinos on tribal lands. In the 21st Century, social equity may be important; but economic parity is paramount. As we look towards 2010 and all that it can bring, the color that will matter most is green, not black, white, brown, or red. 2010 would be a truly New Year if all of America’s people would know and enjoy financial freedom.

Heroes in the ’Hood seek outstanding teens At a time when teen violence remains a dominant public concern, the Heroes in the ’Hood program enters its 17th year of recognizing local young people who defy the trends and try to make their communities safer and better places to live. Since its inception in 1993, Heroes in the ’Hood has honored more than 400 teens whose service has set an example for their peers and inspired Chicago. Founded by GO Airport Express, the city’s airport shuttle service, the Chicago Crusader, and the DuSable Museum of African American History, Heroes is once again seeking nominations for teenagers who volunteered their time and talent in 2009. Winners will receive an all-expenses paid trip to the state capital in Springfield in addition to other prizes. The program takes on particu-

lar significance this year when some 30 teens are shot every month, according to John McCarthy, president of Airport Express, lead sponsor of Heroes in the ’Hood. “Some people see the problems in their communities and feel helpless,” says McCarthy. “But others rise to the challenge. We’re trying to assure that these exceptional teenagers get the recognition they deserve.” Nominations will be accepted through March 17th. Candidates must be between ages 13 and 18 and live in the city of Chicago. Nominees will be judged on their initiative, creativity, and the benefit they brought to their community. Those interested in nominating a teen can download submission forms from www.airportexpress.com/community.html (Continued on page 15)

Prior to distribution, all of the donated coats were dry cleaned free of charge by Norman’s Cleaners in Orland Park, IL. “Our Neighborhood Coat and Clothing Drive is a wonderful example of the generosity of Marquette Bank employees” said Betty Kosky-Harn, Executive Vice President. “We would like to thank all of the employees who donated coats and give a very special thanks to Norman’s Cleaners for helping out by cleaning all of the donated coats.” The Marquette Bank Coat and Clothing Drive was part of the Marquette Neighborhood Commitment where each quarter the Bank focuses on a different area of need – shelter, hunger, education and health/well-being. SOUL SISTERS: It would be difficult to imagine the course of American history without them: Ha rriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad; Rosa Parks and her brave refusal in 1955 to relinquish her seat on a Montgomery city bus; Fannie Lou Hame r and her courageous stand at a 1968 political convention. These stories of courage and commitment are among the many featured in “Freedom’s Sisters,” a collaboration between the Cincinnati Museum Center, Ford Motor Company and the Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES). The interactive active exhibit showcases twenty extraordinary African American women, inviting visitors to bear witness to some of the most important moRosa Parks ments in our nation’s history. The exhibition will open at the DuSable Museum of African American History, on Saturday, January 23, 2010. “From Mary McLeod Bethune to Dorothy Height, the stories in ‘Freedom’s Sisters’ will surely inspire and motivate all Americans, especially younger visitors,” said Jim Vella, Ford Motor Company Fund President. “We are deeply proud to be a part of this important, educational and uplifting exhibition that honors these individuals and the causes that they served.” The exhibition is currently on a three-year national tour and visiting cities such as: Memphis, Tennessee; Birmingham, Alabama; Dallas, Texas and Detroit, Michigan. A variety of engaging educational and community outreach components are included to facilitate the involvement of local audiences. “The inspiring stories of these women should be told Dorothy Height and told again,” said Cincinnati Museum Center president and CEO Douglas W. McDonald. “Cincinnati Museum Center is honored to create this extraordinary exhibit and can only hope that we can provide an extension to the legacies of these strong, courageous and trailblazing women.” The exhibition has been embraced by a prestigious National Committee of Honor. Members of the Freedom’s Sisters Committee of Honor include: Quincy Jones, Mae Jemison, General Colin Powell, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, Cathy Hughes, Patti LaBelle, Sheila Johnson, Elizabeth Eckford, Johnetta Cole and a wide range of national dignitaries, reflecting the exhibitions broad appeal.

Up In The Air Up In The Air is a timely movie that addresses the current economic downturn and the loss of jobs in America. Film heartthrob George Clooney plays Ryan Bingham, a consultant who works for a firm that steps in when a company wants to lay off employees. This way, the layoff is impersonal and no one currently employed at the firm is responsible for telling fired employees the bad news. During his tenure at the firm, Bingham has amassed nearly 10 million frequent flyer miles, as he travels all over the country. But this hectic schedule also lends itself to an impersonal, removed, alienated personality in Bingham. He has hardly any contact with his family members, and is stunned when a sister is getting married and actually asks for his help in making a prop for her reception table. Reportedly most of the people in the movie who learn that they have lost their jobs are real people who have been laid off and/or fired in the past, because of economics. This provides a fresh perspective to the movie and adds a diverse group of victims (for lack of better word). One such

employee, however, played by Tamala Jones is so distraught at being told that she’s being laid off that she nonchalantly says she’s going to jump off the pretty bridge located near her house. An ironic change of circumstances in Up In The Air presents itself when a new upstart, eager female employee is paired with Bingham to learn the ropes. She’s offers a new, cheaper way to perform the firm’s duties by devising an online teleconference, where employees all over the country are hooked into the teleconfer-

ence and told they are laid off via technology. But this in turn would cause some of Bingham’s firm’s employees to lose their jobs, also. “This is what we do, we take people at their most fragile and we set them adrift,” Bingham tells Anna Kendrick who plays Natalie Keener to describe their profession. Keener has introduced the new firing program, and the boss has ordered Bingham to show her just what the firm is all about. (Continued on page 15)

AVATAR

A Review By Bonnie DeShong Avatar takes place on the planet Pandora. It looks a lot like earth only greener and majestically beautiful, however, humans can’t breathe the air. The indigenous people that live on Pandora are called Na’vi and are ten feet tall with gold almond shaped eyes and their skin color is blue. They live in a jungle of huge plants and flowers and animals that look somewhat like those on earth but not quite. The story in a nutshell, there is a mineral that is only found on Pandora and it is worth millions of dollars on earth. A major corporation wants this mineral badly. They build a base on Pandora, create a device to wear to breathe the air and send ex military personal to the planet to take the rock. First they have to communicate with the Na’vi so the scientists create a way to take Na’Vi DNA and grow sort of a clone that looks like the Na’Vi and can breathe the air of Pandora. Now the key is that humans are put into a pod and through a program their “souls” integrate the clone of the Na’Vi and they are sent into the jungle to integrate with the real indigenous people of Pandora. They are to gain their trust and get them to move from the area so the corporation can mine

Sam Worthington as Jake Sully and Zoe Saldana as Neytiri in "Avatar." of his Na’Vi clone, he can run, for months and actually began a the minerals. Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) jump and walk. But his mind is school to teach them English. All was fine until the corporation is a former marine who is also a still in military mode. Zoe Saldana plays the role of came in and she was banned from twin. Jake is also paralyzed from a war wound. His brother was set Neytiri, the chief of Pandora’s the village. I love this movie. I think directo go to Pandora on the scientific daughter. She finds Jake in his mission but was killed and since Na’Vi form and knowing that he tor and writer James Cameron he and Jake have the same DNA isn’t a true Na’Vi she rescues him created a wonderful, wistful world and the Na’Vi clone for his broth- from certain death. Sigourney and the various themes that run er was already done, the military Weaver is the head scientist who through the film are exciting. I recruited Jake to take his brother’s is the head of the avatar program. didn’t get bored once in the entire place. Once Jake enters the body She has been visiting the Na’Vi 3 hours of the film.

There are several versions of the film. You can see it at an IMAX theater in 3-D, a regular theater in 3-D which is $3.00 more than the regular price of the film or you can see it like I did, without the 3-D and pay regular price. I was just as thrilled and entertained. Whichever way you decide, SPEND THE MONEY and see this film in a theater.

Best of 2009 Ahhh, the new year. A time for fresh beginnings and resolutions made with the best intentions (then broken). Out with the old, in with the new. A time to use up that bookstore gift certificate that’s burning a hole in your pocket. But what to buy? Lucky for you, the new year is also a time for the annual Best Of list. So without further ado (and because that gift certificate is tingling), here are my best picks for 2009: Fiction: If you love mysteries with sass and a few cringe-worthy scenes, you’ll love the Jacqueline Daniels series, the latest being “Che rry Bomb” by J.A. Konrath. This book starts out with a boom and ends with a cliff-hanger that leaves fans howling for the next installment. One caveat: you’ll get more out of this novel if you read “Fuzzy Navel” (the book before this one) first. I was pleasantly surprised by “B as in B eaut y” by Al berto Ferreras. This little novel is about a self-conscious, homely wallflower who gets a series of fairy god14

mothers, transforming her into someone who blossoms. A Cinderella tale with a few twists, this is one really cute book. I listened to “Eve” by Elissa Elliott on CD, and I was glad I did. This lush, beautiful story is about what happened to Adam and Eve after they were thrown out of the Garden of Eden, as told from the viewpoint of Eve and her daughters. Performed by three readers and in several different voices, this is an audiobook not to miss. Getting older and saying good-

bye are two of the themes in “ G o t ’ t i l I t ’ s G o ne ” b y L a r r y Duplechan. When Johnnie Ray Rousseau loses his husband to AIDS, he believes he’ll never love again, but he does – and just as he enters a new relationship, he faces losing his beloved mother. Be aware that there is one graphic scene in this book, but get it for its casually presented dialogue and the realism within. This one is probably cheating: “Shutt er Island” by Dennis Lehane. ago and re-released in audio this fall (to coincide with the movie’s release), this audiobook is positively stunning because of its narrator, Tom Stechschulte. Yes, the story is good – it’s got surprises all over the place – but listening to such a stellar performance makes it an audiobook you’ll want to listen to twice. Non-Fiction: Like a fool, I read “The Survivors Club” by Ben Sherwood while on an airplane. I read about

how passengers have 90 seconds to exit a burning plane and how women over a Certain Age most certainly die in a plane crash. Gulp. And still, I can’t recommend enough this book about fighting, surviving, overcoming adversity and turning life’s rottenest lemons into sweet lemonade. Particularly in this economy, it seems that speculation on How the Other Half Lives is an acceptable pastime. In “Rich Like Them” by Ryan D’Agostino (Continued on page 15) The Chicago Crusader

Best of 2009 (Cont’d from page 14) you’ll see that things are only slightly different. Part business, part motivational for wallet and soul, this book is a nice antidote to those irritating spoiled-star headlines. Reading like a novel in Nine Live s: nine parts, “N D eath an d Li f e i n N ew Orleans” by Dan Baum is the 100% true story of nine people a few decades before Hurricane Katrina and the years afterward. I loved this book for the way the tales are told (in shortshort chapters of mini-drama) and because Baum has a knack for wrapping you tight in the lives of such divergent people. If you live in the city and have never so much as touched a live pig, don’t discount “Co op” by Michael Perry. Much more than a farm memoir, this is a love story to a woman, daughters, the land, and yes, to pigs and chickens. Perry is a poet

with a wicked sense of the absurd and this book is another can’t-miss. Since we all came into the world in the same basic way, “Birth Day” by Mark Sloan, M.D. is a particular delight. This is a book about what happens in the hours leading up to and the hours after birth, to both the mother and the baby. Not just for new moms, this book is a science-geek’s dream as well as a gee-whiz read for anybody who is awed at the miracle of birth. Children’s Books Okay, so let’s just say it. When you read a book aloud to your child, having something for you is bonus. So make yourself happy with “Let’s Do Nothing!” by Tony Fucile, a cute story of two bored boys who try the impossible. The good-naturedly silly tale is great for kids ages 4 to 8. The illustrations – very Bugs-Bunnylike - will keep you laughing. Your middle-school dog lover will adore “Flawed The Chicago Crusader

Dogs” by Berkeley Breathed. This is the story of a fancy showdog who becomes the victim of jealousy and is separated from his beloved Human. Filled with Breathed illustrations and with a tale that brings tears (silly, I know), this is a good book for an adult, too. I was very impressed by “We Are the Ship” by Kadir Nelson in audio. Yes, this is a picture book about Negro League baseball and the struggle of the players to gain recognition and to bust through racial lines. It’s a beautiful book, but you won’t miss a thing by getting it in audio; in fact, you’ll gain. Not only is it presented with various voices (which enhances the story), but there’s a bonus DVD with the books’ artwork included. For upper gradeschoolers who’ve read the Little House books a couple dozen times, “School’s Out: Rachel Yoder – Always Trouble Somewhere” by Wanda Brunstetter in audio is a nice alternative. This is the story of an Amish girl and her wild summer vacation. Kids will love the authentic Pennsylvania Dutch language in the audiobook and parents will love that this book is great for all ages. What kid doesn’t like a few shivers? “Coraline” by

Neal Gaiman has them and more. This is the story of a little Coraline who steps into an alternative universe where things are close to life, but not quite. The creature who is her Other Mother wants to keep Coraline forever, but, of course, she must return. I truly enjoyed this darkly-told story in audio, but beware that it might really frighten very little children. And there you are. A gift certificate-friendly Best of The Year list you can really use, with some books that your family will enjoy until it’s time for the next Best of The Year list. Fortunately, time flies fastest with a book in your lap. Happy Reading!

The pair has a hard time of it at first, because Bingham is used to working alone and not having any association with others; just the occasional woman that he meets for sexual encounters during his travels. One such woman with whom he finally allows himself to fall in love with is named Alex Goran, played by Vera Farmiga. Bingham and Goran don’t know much about each other at first; they just keep making plans to meet in cities where they cross paths in their respective jobs. Kenner tries to make sense of what she feels is a senseless relationship; even bugging the two to make a commitment. That is, until her boyfriend breaks up with her via text message. After that point, she’s upset and becomes a bit more relaxed, as she tries to mend her broken heart. Toward the end, Bingham learns a thing or two about life and love, although all doesn’t work out well. He and Keener are both distraught when a sad

Lovie Smith retains job, fans confused and disappointed By J. Coyden Palmer Bears fans hoping for a change in the head coach were disappointed this week as the team’s first and only African American head coach has kept his job. Despite missing the playoffs for the past three seasons and his team this year looking unprepared and uninterested, Bears CEO and President Ted Phillips said he believes Smith is the right man to get the Bears back on top. “We can’t just stay with the status quo and changes were necessary,” Phillips said. “For the last three years it’s been clear that nobody has done a good enough job in this organization. We are committed to putting a winning team together in 2010 and I know some may disagree, but I believe the fastest way to improve is to keep the continuity that we’ve had with both Jerry Angelo as our General Manager and Lovie Smith as our coach.” That news did not sit well with African American Bears fans with which the Crusader spoke. Many wanted Angelo, Smith and his entire staff canned after the Bears endured a 7-9 season and missed

the playoffs for the third year in a row. Fans expressed discontent with everything from Smith’s laidback demeanor and seemingly unwillingness to change, to his game-time decisions on personnel and play calling. But Smith has always had the support and respect from his players and the McCaskey family who own the Bears. “The Bears are a strange organization,” said Bears fan Terrence Jackson, who could not believe how Smith kept his job. “I wonder how bad they have to be before people get fired.” Smith spoke in his usual Texas drawl during the press conference, but seemed more emotional than usual. He vehemently defended his defensive schemes, which have come under fire. He said the schemes were not the problem and they were the same ones used when the team went to the Super Bowl in 2007. “Look, the defensive scheme we use is pretty much the same one that everyone else uses,” Smith said. “I am moving out of my role as Defensive Coordinator. When you look at every season independently, I felt like last year this

Billy “The Kid” Harris remembered (Continued from page 2) to Harris’ family. Included in that group is Westinghouse and University of Illinois graduate Eddie Johnson. He said Harris was the person everyone came to see when he played in the famed Chicago Summer League. “I remember growing into my own as a basketball player and travelling to participate in the Summer League at Chicago State University. I competed against all types of top college players and professionals, but the one player you enjoyed watching and competing against was Billy “The Kid” Harris,” Johnson said. Mr. Harris was featured in several media outlets after his career. In 2002 he appeared in a car commercial and Billy Harris is featured in the book “Brothers” co-authored by Sylvester Monroe. The book tracks the lives of men growing up in and around the Robert Taylor homes. Harris’ affect on his children was well-known. His daughter is an employee at the Chicago Tribune. She said her father loved his biological and stepchildren equally and that he was a great man who touched many people. His other children made similar statements. “He’s always been there for me no matter what,” wrote his son Anthony Harris on his blog and who played at Whitney Young. “When I fall he and my Uncle Carl are the people who are there to pick me up, The Chicago Crusader

and push me to do more to reach the peak of my career in life. Whether it’s school, basketball, or my workouts they are there 100 percent all the time. There are others who have an impact on my life but not as effective as my father and uncle. Not only do they teach me how to work hard in school and on the court, they are preparing me for life. They have always told me the time I put into bas-

ketball will carry over into the working society.” Harris began his prep career at Lindblom Technical High School. But the school at that time was primarily white and Harris said he did not like the racism he was facing. So he transferred to Dunbar, where he went on to become an All-City, AllState player. Harris was inducted in the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the Chicago Public League Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Current Director of Sports Administration for Chicago Public Schools Calvin Davis knew all about the legend of Harris. A 1976 alumnus of Dunbar and an excellent athlete, Davis said coaches at Dunbar let it be known to all about the contributions Harris made to the school and the sport. “I witnessed him score 56 points once during a game and he could shoot the ball consistently from just inside halfcourt,” Davis said. “He is one of those people we want all of our current student-athletes to model because he was a family man first, a good student and citizen. He knew how to balance life in all of those areas.” A memorial service for Harris was held January 8th at the UIC Pavilion. He is survived by his wife Marianne Tidwell, six children and eight stepchildren. He also had a number of grandchildren.

would give us the best chance to win. Now I feel differently.” But the more Smith spoke, the more fans got upset. “I felt as though Smith insulted our football I.Q. when he started talking,” said James Monroe from the Far South Side. “Everyone does play the Cover Two defense but they play it better than the Bears because we have garbage players on the field! So if the players aren’t developing whose fault is that? And if it’s the coaching staff ’s responsibility that there is no player development, how can you not get new coaches?” Montrose Redd is also disappointed Smith is returning. He

said the players don’t fear Smith and he believes they aren’t held accountable for the mistakes they make on the field. “I wish I could work for a boss who never reprimanded me for poor performance and get paid the amount of money these players make,” said Redd, a driver for FedEx. “He makes excuses for the players every time they do something dumb. I also don’t like the defense we are playing, which Lovie was in total control of this year. I think he and the other coaches should have been fired.” Not everyone got a reprieve however. Offensive Coordinator Ron Turner along with five other offensive coaches was fired. Smith said he will look at a wide array of candidates to fill the coaching vacancies. He said he will have the final decision on who is hired. However with his record of hiring and firing assistants, Smith has lost the confidence of fans. He understands the frustration of fans but believes he is the right guy to get the Bears back to their winning ways. “We are not the first team to go through a tough spell and we won’t be the last,” Smith said. “We’re going to make changes and there were times this year when we were a good football team and we weren’t playing inconsistently. I think we can be that team more than we were the team that lost nine games this season.” Many people believe money was behind the decision to keep Smith. He has two years and $11 million remaining on his contract. Phillips said the contract was never a factor. Phillips also said he consulted with Bears owners Michael and Virginia McCaskey when evaluating and making the decision on Smith’s future.

As the investigation of this near miss tragedy intensifies, we are learning some reasons why it took place.
