Famous Blacks once lived at Rosenwald Courts, now after a multimillion dollar renovation and swank upgrades, hundreds of applicants are rushing to get a piece of history By Erick Johnson
It’s not finished, but the wait list is well over a thousand applicants. For the past few months, residents all over the South Side have been filling out thick applications, hoping for a chance to move in the storied Rosenwald Courts apartments. It’s a piece of history where Jesse Owens, Nat King Cole and other famous Blacks once lived before they hit it big. One of them was actress Marla Gibbs, who, back in the day, played the sassy domestic Florence on the hit television sitcom, “The Jeffer-
sons.” She didn’t have a microwave in her fictional kitchen or in her former digs in Bronzeville, but one is there now, along with several sleek appliances and kitchen cabinets. And with some luxurious amenities, Gibbs’ successors at Rosenwald Courts are moving on up. The real deluxe apartment in the sky has been beautifully restored along with some 239 units in the sprawling complex at 47th and Michigan Avenue. Young and running a sizzling family business Second generation takes the helm at Best Barbeque By Erick Johnson He’s 24 and owns a condo. She’s 35 and an executive who is younger than most of her employees. Meet the Jacksons. They’re not that famous musical family that came from Gary, Indiana instead Derek and Jheri Jackson are the second
generation of operators who run Best Barbeque, a popular, family-owned business that has sold tons of mouth watering foods from a tiny building at 1648 West 115th Street in Beverly. Their dad is Michael Jackson and for years he turned the business into a real thriller among residents in this far South Side neighborhood. Located just off I-57, it’s a 20-year-old business that has drawn thousands of food lovers from all over Chicago. For years, many have stood in long lines to tear into some tasty ribs smothered with a time-honored family recipe that continues to bring customers as far away as Iowa. At the head of this operation is Jheri and her brother Derek. Both are the youngest of a family (Continued on page 20)
The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) on Wednesday, September 28, set a strike date for Tuesday, October 11, a move that threatens to shut down the Chicago Public School system that’s struggling with declining enrollment and pending cuts. The CTU’s House of Delegates approved the strike date at a meeting late Wednesday afternoon. The move came after the CTU on Monday, September 26 voted to go on strike to voice their opposition to paying more into their pension plans. About 95 percent of participating union members supported the move. Wednesday’s decision to strike falls in line with Illinois state law, which says a union must file a 10-day strike notice with the state’s labor board. Leaders of the CTU, which represents nearly 30,000 teachers and support staff, indicated over the summer that a strike was possible as soon as October. Its not clear whether the strike date was a negotiation tactic but after the announcement, the Chicago Board of Education acknowledged the potential for a strike and authorized a $15 million emergency plan to shelter and feed students if teachers walk off the job. Like the strike in 2012, Chicago Public Schools would work with the city, the Chicago Park District and other agencies to provide facilities for students. The developments come as CPS stands to lose as many as 300 teachers and $45 million because of declining student enrollment. According to the latest figures, student enrollment is at 378,481, a 3.5 percent decline from the previous year. There are 13,804 fewer students enrolled in CPS this year, according to the district.
The drop — based on enrollment on the 10th day of school — is more than double what CPS had forecast in July. Schools receive funding through a studentbased budgeting system. Because of the enrollment decline, schools will collectively see $30.7 million in budget cuts. The district will provide $5.7 million to protect “critical academic programming” from being cut at hard-hit schools. There could be 300 layoffs tied to the enrollment decline. And on Monday, September 26, Moody’s Investors Service lowered the district’s bond rating to deeper junk status with a B3 rating. Moody’s based the rating on the district’s reliance on short-term borrowing, a “deepening structural deficit” and a budget “built on unrealistic expectations” of help from a struggling state government that is also plagued by financial woes.

MOVIN’ ON UP (Continued from page 1) apartment living during the Great Migration—is experiencing a rebirth after years of neglect and urban blight. Stretching an entire city block, it’s a national landmark that for years was an eyesore in Bronzeville. Rosenwald Courts is beaming once again after a $130 million restoration. Now a mixed-used development complex, Rosenwald Courts is once again in high demand as it attracts hundreds of applicants the same way middle-class Blacks had done decades ago. With new modern amenities, including elevators, some may argue that the Rosenwald is better today than when it was built in 1930.
erations of residents. Seniors live on the east side apartments that line Michigan Avenue. Families or individuals will live on the west side of the complex on Wabash Avenue. At the back of the complex on 46th and Michigan Avenue are 36 units in three-story flats. Here, handsome wooden staircases, fireplaces and bookshelves have been restored to their original grandeur. In the front entrance of the flats, the original tiled floors and white marble walls are still intact. These units are huge. Originally built for families, all the rooms are spacious. These units have also been equipped with a full kitchen that includes a microwave
A FIREPLACE IS one of several historic features that have been restored in three-story walk-up flats at Rosenwald Courts. (Picture by Erick Johnson) On Sept. 30, Alderman Pat Dowell (3rd) and Mayor Rahm Emanuel are scheduled to hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the long-awaited reopening of Rosenwald Courts—a sprawling apartment complex that sits on 2.5 acres and stretches an entire city block. It is expected that it will be a celebration that will renew hope in Bronzeville’s future by celebrating the marriage of its past and present. A reporter from the Chicago Crusader was given a sneak preview of Rosenwald Courts on Sept. 27. With three days before the ribbon-cutting ceremony, there was still much work to be done. Many of the units were not completed and laborers were still working on numerous storefront retail spaces that were not yet occupied. Most of the units for seniors were completed and officials say the entire complex will be completed by December. For the units that are finished, they are generating widespread interest and appeal with its swank furnishings, wall-to-wall carpeting and amenities in a landmark that retains its historic charm and identity. Out of 33, only eight remain available to rent. There were no units that were ready for viewing on the family side of the complex during the preview, but the Crusader was told that each apartment has a washer, dryer and microwave ovens. All of the family units are one or two bedrooms. In the building for seniors, each unit has one bedroom. The kitchen includes granite countertops, sleek black cabinets with matching refrigerator, stove and microwave oven. On all five floors, there is a “laundry lounge room” that includes washers and dryers, flat- screen televisions, tables, and cushioned seating. The floors are also equipped with a high-tech security system and an emergency button for seniors who need help. In addition to new apartments and elevators, the family and senior buildings at Rosenwald Courts will have a furnished lobby decorated with African art, a fitness center and green areas where residents can barbeque, picnic or walk their dog. In the building for families, there is

Once known as the Michigan Boulevard Garden Apartments, the building was later renamed after its developer, Julius Rosenwald, a former president of Sears, Roebuck & Company. A revered philanthropist who built the Museum of Science and Industry, Rosenwald gave millions of dollars to schools and facilities in the Black community at a time when few wealthy philanthropists gave to organizations that helped people of color. Grand sendoff for late Publisher of Chicago Citizen Horse-led procession to precede funeral of Bill Garth Sr. By Lisette Gushiniere (Chicago Citizen Newspaper Group, NNPA Member) William Garth, Sr., the CEO of the Chicago Citizen Newspaper Group Inc., (CCNG) and Chairman of the Chatham Business Association (CBA), died on Friday, September 23, 2016. He was 79. He will be honored Saturday, October 1 with a funeral that will be held after a horse-led procession. The procession will begin at 10 a.m. at AA Rayner Funeral Home, 18 East 71st Street. The procession will end at New Convenant Missionary Baptist Church, where the funeral is scheduled to begin at 12:15 p.m. The church is located at 754 East 77th Street (Cottage Grove). Garth will be buried at Oak Woods Cemetery in Woodlawn. A pillar in the community, Garth led the Citizen with a steady hand and worked hard to make the news operation the largest Black-owned ABC audited newspaper in the Midwest. Starting out as an advertising salesman for the Citizen, Garth lived the American Dream. After gaining recognition as a master salesman at the Citizen, he ended up
owning the newspaper chain in 1980 when he purchased the business from Gus Savage, a six-term Democratic congressman, who represented Chicago’s South Side. The sale to Garth included the “Chatham Citizen,” “Southend Citizen” and the “Chicago Weekend” newspapers. Under Garth’s leadership, the Citizen flourished. Between 1984-1987, Garth grew the newspaper chain when he added the “South Suburban” and “Hyde Park Citizen” newspapers. The Citizen was a business Garth nurtured and loved. He once said, “I’ve been good to the Citizen, because the Citizen has been good to me.” He was right. With a current circulation of 112,000 newspapers and a following of 400,000 readers weekly, the Citizen established itself as an important source for community news focused on the AfricanAmerican market. During the early years, while the Citizen prospered, Garth remained close to his roots. For years, the Citizen operated from a storefront on 87th Street near King Drive, but as the business expanded, Garth moved on, but not too far away. Instead of opting for a lofty downtown office
William Garth, Sr. outside of the Black community, Garth stayed on Chicago’s South Side where he purchased a 12,000 square foot building on 806 East 78th Street. From the Citizen’s new home, Garth established a not-for-profit foundation in memory of his late son, Quentis B. Garth, where he served as chairman. Through the

During that period, Rosenwald Courts was the largest and most ambitious housing development in Chicago. For decades, Rosenwald was a respectable place to live for thousands of Bronzeville families. In 1981, Rosenwald was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. However, the complex continued a slow decline as residents moved out and Rosenwald fell to neglect, ro-
dents and disrepair. In 2000, 1,500 were forced to move out after a gas failure shut down 118 units. For 15 years, the complex stood vacant and partially boarded up. Windows were often the targets of vandals and mold build-up filled many units. Activists tried but often fell short in getting Rosenwald Courts restored. One of them, Bobbie Johnson, who led a long campaign to restore the complex, died in 2012. A Memorial Lounge in the Rosenwald has been dedicated to her memory. After several failed efforts to re-
store Rosenwald Courts, Dowell worked with Jim Bergman, a developer who has 60 properties across the country. In 2015, Bergman gutted and rehabbed Rosenwald and spruced up the complex’s courtyard. “It took a lot of time because there was so much work,” Bergman said. “There was a lot of water damage to the floors.” The project drew heavy financial support from the city and the private sector, which granted $84 million in tax subsidies. The CHA contributed about $17.3 million to the project.

QBG Foundation, the organization helped over 49 students and disbursed over $1 million in scholarship awards to disenfranchised, inner city youth in the Chicagoland area. During his lifetime, Garth instinctively understood the importance of passing on the torch to the next generation of leaders. In essence, this was the purpose of the foundation. It’s no wonder that one of the numerous awards Garth received was the opportunity to carry the torch in Chicago during the 2002 Olympic Torch Relay. It was one of many local and national awards and honors he received during his lifetime. Garth’s son, Darrell Garth, president and publisher of CCNG, was thankful for the support he and his family received from members of the community. “The family would like to express our deepest gratitude and thanks for your prayers, cards, flowers, kind gestures, sympathy and show of support as we mourn the loss of my father,” said Garth. “The overwhelming response from members of the community who expressed love, care and concern during this difficult time is greatly appreciated.” Garth was just as passionate about Black entrepreneurship as he was about helping young people. Through the Chatham Business Association (CBA), a business resource center offering an array of customized services and programs designed to assist businesses, he worked tirelessly to lead and guide the development of the CBA. A dedicated activist in the community, it was important to him that Blacks had a seat at the table and were represented on all levels in business. Garth deeply understood the power of the Black press and was an active member in the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), an organization whose mission he vigorously supported. As the former President of Midwest Region III of the NNPA, he was also Region III Advertising Representative with the association. In addition to the NNPA, Garth was active throughout the publishing industry. He became the first Black person to be elected president of the Illinois Press Association (IPA). The IPA is the state’s largest newspaper association and is the office trade organization for Illinois weekly and daily newspapers. By holding this title at the IPA, Garth became the second Black person in the nation elected president of a statewide press association. He also sat on the Board of the Government Affairs Committee, of the Illinois Press Association and served as a board member for more than 15 years. In addition, he was elected a stockholder in the Cook County
South Suburban Publishers Association and in 2009, was elected Chairman of the Cook County Publishers Association for 2010. His business acumen and knowledge in the publishing industry allowed him to also serve as a board member of the Midwest Black Publishers Association. Garth left a lasting impression on the people he met. “Bill Garth was my hero, my friend and my business partner,” commented Al McFarlane, Founder of Insight News and Chairman of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, Foundation. “He was part of the Pantheon of legendary newspaper owners and civic leaders,” he said. “Garth was a master salesman, consummate strategist, and visionary philanthropist. He traveled the world…challenged and afforded American business leaders the opportunity to renegotiate the marketing relationship between product producers and our consumer marketplace. He highlighted the burgeoning purchasing power of Black consumers and unwaveringly marched into often bare knuckle negotiations demanding and achieving movement toward equity and parity. Fearless, he commanded the attention and respect of presidents and heads of state, governors and congressional leaders, captains of industry and the everyday citizen as well. “Garth and I met with His Excellency John Atta Mills, the Vice President of Ghana in his offices at Osu Castle, Accra, Ghana. We were on a mission on behalf of our company, Midwest Black Publishers Coalition, to connect African Americans with Ghana and Africa through the 1999 4th Pan-African Historical Theatre Festival (PANAFEST ’99). “I saw first-hand his confidence and competence, quickened by the power of his personality, resulting in his ability to slice through layers of formality with laser sharp focus on issues at hand. In travelling with him, and at dinner time reminiscing with colleagues and clients, I learned that what I perceived was in fact the genuine article, “True Blue Bill,” the rule, and not the exception. “So it made sense that at any given time some 40 students from the Greater Chicagoland area were attending colleges and universities thanks to millions of dollars he raised on behalf of the Citizen Newspaper and the QBG Foundation. It made sense that he was a leader in the Illinois Press Association and the Cook County Publishers Association. It made sense that Chicago named a street after him. It made sense that he enriched every life he touched.

THE STATE OF THE POLICE STATE So far this year, at least 194 Black people have been killed by the police in the United States according to The Guardian, a project that tracks police killings of Black people. The latest incident in Charlotte, North Carolina, involved the killing of Keith Lamont Scott, a man who was disabled, according to a relative. This incident has set off a firestorm of protests along with calls to release the video of the event. Though this is the case, the authorities released a video that did not prove one way or another that Mr. Scott had a gun. His family insists he was not armed, and that he had a book. Incredibly, the police chief stated that they were not going to give 100 percent transparency, and that they would not release additional footage at this time. The family of the victim was allowed to view the one video that was released, but agreed that the video left more questions than answers. What it did show, however, was Mr. Scott backing away from the car and not acting aggressively toward the police. He did not have a gun in his hand at the time he was shot, though police say they found a small handgun on the ground after the shooting. The day before Scott was killed, police shot 40-year-old Terence Crutcher to death after officers spotted his SUV stalled in the middle of a road. It was said that Crutcher did not follow directions from the police to put his hands up, but a video that was released showed him walking towards his car with his hands in the air. What has become very obvious is that police lie. They have been caught on several occasions in their lies because of the prevalence of videos. This is why the Black community is extremely distrustful of the police, and today that distrust is expanding exponentially, even though rational people admit that all police are not cut from the same malevolent cloth. Some activists are now calling for more diversity on the police force as a stop gap measure to help curtail the spate of police murders of Black people. But, as pointed out by others, the police officer who killed Scott was Black, as was the Charlotte, NC police chief. Race, therefore, is not the only factor involved in the issue of police shootings of Black citizens, although it has been known for some years that the Ku Klux Klan and other white supremacist organizations have infiltrated police forces in the United States. The real issue that we face is that we are becoming (have become!) a police state. We constantly decry the use of unnecessary force by the police, but police murders of Blacks are continuing unabated with very few offending officers being brought to justice for their crimes. There are a lot of historical reasons for this descent into oppression by law enforcement, but chief among the current madness is the ascent of President Barack Obama to the Oval Office. Die hard racist bigots just can’t take seeing a Black man in power, and it has become alright to express extremely bigoted opinions and demonstrate crass behavior while eschewing so-called “political correctness.” America is at a crossroads, and the future of Blacks in this country will depend greatly upon who becomes the next president. One of the candidates, Donald Trump, has loudly trumpeted “law and order” as a remedy for problems facing the country. For Blacks who support him please take heed and READ BETWEEN THE LINES: a law and order platform would not bode well for the Black community! It would probably end up looking like the current situation on steroids if Trump is elected. He is calling for a reinstatement of “stop and frisk,” with a lot of his sycophants strongly supporting this ill-conceived stance. If he had done his homework, he would know that it did not work in New York, and it would not work now, especially since a lot of states have concealed carry laws. It would only result in the further legal enslavement and murder of Black citizens. A luta continua.
I remember the rollout a few years back of the Safe Passage program. Hiring these men and women to stand at certain locations on streets that lead up to schools was an idea that was embraced and simultaneously met with skepticism. The idea was to keep our students safe, especially the girls, from unsavory people. That is a commendable goal. It also was designed to give many of our veterans some part time employment. Working five hours a day on a split shift for $10 an hour was a true help to many of them. Now that the Safe Passage has been around a few years, and has proven its worth, it might be time to retool it. Namely, there needs to be more supervision attached to the program. There needs to be someone at all times to ensure these workers are on the job, more particularly on their posts. I say that because countless times I have driven down some streets with Safe Passage workers and instead of being spread out every several yards or feet, they are clustered together on a corner, laughing and talking and often enjoying a cigarette. This is the kind of behavior I see when children are still en route to school. That is when the Safe Passage workers are supposed to be at high alert,

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Safe Passage workers aren’t doing the job Dear Editor:
yes? This is a problem I have witnessed in Black and Latino neighborhoods. I suspect it also exists on the North Side as well. No matter what level they are employed Safe Passage workers are hired to protect our children. That is a job that must be taken seriously and diligently every minute of the morning and afternoon shifts. Anyone who can’t keep that commitment should be asked to step down right away. This is not to paint all Safe Passage workers as irresponsible, but if one shirks his or her duty and a child is harmed or abducted, then the entire program suffers. Too often new programs start with a bang and eventually begin to slide into mediocrity. We simply can’t afford to let this happen with Safe Passage. Workers must always be on the lookout for anyone who might do harm to our kids. When workers are standing around in one spot yakking and smoking cigarette I doubt our children’s safety is getting full attention.

Civil rights, legal and consumer groups urge CFPB to get debt collection regulation right By Charlene Crowell When it comes to consumer complaints on credit and lending, debt collection generates more criticism than any other industry. This $13 billion industry makes profits by pursuing at least 77 million consumers each year. Many of the aggressive tactics used are for debts that are not owed, others that are too old to collect, or entirely owed by another consumer. An earlier column this summer shared how the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) released its proposed outline, an early step in the rulemaking process, intended to rein in abusive debt collection practices such as harassing phone calls made to consumers either at home or work. Now, before the first-ever debt collection regulation is adopted, a broad base of 59 civil rights, consumer and legal service advocates working at both the national and state levels are pushing to ensure that debt collection rules become all that consumers expect and need from
their consumer cop-on-the-beat. In a September 15 letter to CFPB Director Richard Cordray, the advocates urged the Bureau to include additional provisions in its proposed outline. In their alternative and collective view, it is important to require more robust documentation standards to better ensure that debt collectors can prove a given debt is actually owed. The coalition which includes the NAACP, National Consumer Law Center, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, National Council of LaRaza and the Center for Responsible Lending highlighted key areas where the Bureau can more fully address common abusive practices including: 1. Requiring debt collectors to have and review original account information at the start of collection attempts; 2. Providing those same and additional documents to the courts when filing collection lawsuits or obtaining judgments in those cases; and
Charlene Crowell 3. Limiting the number of calls made to consumers, particularly for medical or student loan debt.
While each of these efforts are needed, one in particular has the potential to make a huge number of multiple bad practices go away. Across the country, local courts have been inundated with undocumented claims of default. Moreover, millions of affected consumers have only become aware of lawsuits until after court judgments have been ordered and frequently based on inaccurate information. Unfortunately, communities of color are among those hardest hit by debt collection and debt collection lawsuits. People living in neighborhoods with a higher share of Black or Latino residents are more likely to have debts in collection and also a greater amount of debt in collections. Majority Black neighborhoods experience debt collection lawsuits and judgments at a rate twice that of White neighborhoods. Last year, debt collection generated more complaints than any other industry, with both the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and CFPB. Additionally, last year CFPB returned
$360 million to consumers wronged by unlawful debt collection practices and levied $79 million in fines against violators. The FTC banned 30 companies and individuals from working in the industry again. Although the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act (FDCPA) was enacted in 1977, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform Act gave the first-ever regulatory authority for the debt collection industry to CFPB. “Every consumer should be free from abusive and harassing debt collection,” said Lisa Stifler, deputy director of the Center for Responsible Lending’s state policy. “When people are being wrongly pursued for debts they do not owe, it is time for action and reforms.” Charlene Crowell is the communications deputy director for the Center for Responsible Lending. The Birth of the Student Protest Movements: CORE, SNCC to Black Lives Matter (BLM)
By Dr. Erma Brooks Williams
The Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) was founded in Chicago in 1942 as the Committee of Racial Equality by African American and white student activists. The main goal of the organization was to abolish racial discrimination. James Farmer and George Houser were the leaders of CORE at the University of Chicago. CORE used nonviolent strategies such as sit-ins, picket lines, freedom rides and other forms of civil disobedience to combat Jim Crow laws. In 1963, Chicago chapter protested against the construction of mobile classrooms for overcrowded black schools. It also fought for the elimination of slum housing and led open housing campaigns. On September 4, 1966, Chicago CORE chairman Robert Lucas led over 250 marchers through Cicero to demand desegregation of housing. In the 50s and 60s, CORE began to channel its energy in the south by participating in the Greensboro sit-ins and Freedom Rides to end segregated interstate buses and terminals. CORE also co-sponsored the March on Washington. In 1966, James Farmer retired from CORE. He was succeeded by Floyd B. McKissick. Under McKissick’s leadership, the organization tactics shifted from nonviolence and interracialism to Black
Power and nationalism. Two years later, in 1968, CORE underwent another shift when McKissick was replaced by Roy Innis. Under Innis’ leadership, the organization became politically conservative on issues ranging from civil rights legislation and foreign policy to gun control and welfare. Under Innis’s leadership, a lot of CORE members, including Farmer, severed all ties with the organization. SNCC, often pronounced, “snick”, was another important organization of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. It emerged from a student meeting organized by Ella Baker held at Shaw University in April 1960. Nonviolent in its orientation, but seeking to connect the more militant student protest groups across the nation, SNCC later began to shift its focus from desegregation protests to voting rights and voter registration, helping to found and establish Freedom Schools as well as the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP) in 1963 and 1964, respectively. The most common action of SNCC and other groups included organizing sit-ins at racially segregated lunch counters, all white public libraries, public parks, public swimming pools and movie theaters. SNCC was not a membershipbased organization, but consisted of SNCC staff. Though its headquar-

ters was in Atlanta, Georgia, SNCC members lived in and adopted the concerns of black communities in Virginia, Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas and Maryland and in other states across the South. SNCC emerged as a major force in the southern civil rights movement by its involvement in the 1961 Freedom Rides and voter registration efforts. SNCC played a major role in the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The group saw itself as catalysts for change. SNCC sought to aid in the development of local black leaders and local black institutions, which would outlive the group’s presence. This lead to a change of strategy of the group from non-violent action to more militant action under the leadership of Stokely Carmichael, who replaced John Lewis as its leader in 1966. Other renowned leaders of SNCC included former mayor of Washington D.C. Marion Barry, the late Julian Bond, James Bevel, former U.S. Congressman Gus Savage, Dr. Fannie Rushing, and many others. BY 1968, SNCC was only a shadow of its former entity as financial issues, diminishing staff, internal rifts and police insurgence weakened the organization’s support and impact. By the end of the decade, FBI surveillance of SNCC’s remaining offices was discontinued due to a lack of activity.
Blacks Must control their owcoMMunity
Over a half-century later, the civil rights movement and social activism have reemerged with the emergence of Black Lives Matters (BLM). BLM began in 2013 as a result of the killing of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown and many other African American by the police. Over 50 organizations have joined the struggle to stop the killings of our men and women nationwide. These movements began to emerge in 2008 with Occupy Wall Street, Fight for $15 and the Tea Party. There are key similarities and differences of these movements. According to Professor Emeritus Robert T. Starks, “SNCC was funded with small $10 donations and small fundraisers were also held to support the organization. The organization never received the kind of large donations that BLM has received.” BLM might have been founded by Blacks and gay women, but the movement requires money to operate to produce signs, bullhorns, and transportation of protesters to protest sites, use of IPhones, and the Internet. In order to carry out these functions, wealthy individuals such as billionaire George Soros, Taco Bell heir Rob McKay and Harry Belafonte, who also provided financial support to SNCC, are providing financial resources to support the mission of BLM. “These student lead organizations
are similar in that they have highly spirited and enthusiastic students,” said Starks. All three were founded based on a fight against social injustices in the Black community. BLM and other movements will continue the struggle as long as people of color are treated unfairly and experience losing grounds in the overall society. KEN BRIDGES AND MATAH Dr. Conrad Worrill, Director/Professor, Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS), located at 700 East Oakwood Blvd, Chicago, Illinois, 60653, 773268-7500, Fax: 773-268-3835. E-mail: c-worrill@neiu.edu, Website: www.neiu.edu/ccics, Twitter: @CCICS_Chicago.
Dr. Conrad Worrill On Friday, October 11, 2002, the leaders of the National Black United Front, from around the country, began arriving in Kansas City, Missouri for our Fall Central Committee Meeting. The meeting was scheduled to begin Friday evening with a welcome reception and an all day meeting for Saturday, October 12th. As the Chicago contingency pulled into the parking lot of the W. E. B.
DuBois Learning Center, I immediately observed that many of the leaders of NBUF had arrived and were outside the Center greeting and interacting with each other. It was a beautiful day in Kansas City and it was good to see that so many of the NBUF leadership had arrived early in preparation for this important meeting. About an hour after our arrival at the W.E.B. DuBois Learning Center, I received a call on my cell phone from an activist in Chicago, and a MATAH organizer informing me that our Brother, Kenneth Bridges had been killed by a sniper (Beltway Sniper) at a gas station somewhere in Virginia while refueling his vehicle. Needless to say, I found this hard to believe and accept. Immediately, I began to call other MATAH organizers, specifically Gaston Armour, the MATAH Regional Organizer for the Chicago and Midwest area. Brother Gaston confirmed that our friend and fellow worker in the Black Liberation Movement had become a victim of this serial sniper. Immediately, I asked everyone to assemble and I made the announcement. Obviously, everyone was shocked. I asked that we pour libations for Brother Ken and use his spirit to begin our meeting early. We dedicated our NBUF Central Committee Meeting to Ken Bridges, the Co-Founder of MATAH.
I had begun to work very closely with Brother Ken as we prepared for the August 17, 2002 Millions For Reparations Mass Rally in Washington, D.C. Brother Ken was very helpful in making this rally a “grand success.” I must admit, for a very long time I avoided meeting with any of the representatives of MATAH who called NBUF Offices seeking to explain the MATAH program. Personally, I had become somewhat turned off, over the years, by people presenting a variety of economic schemes allegedly aimed at helping solve the economic problems of African people in America. I had become burned out from listening to these proposals. So, I put up a barrier over the last two years and avoided meeting with any MATAH representatives. But apparently, the Creative Forces of the Universe did not want this to continue. Without all of the lengthy background, Gaston Armour joined the NBUF Chicago Chapter and in our meeting, the evening he joined, I discovered I knew his family, specifically his aunt, who I’d worked with over the years. It dawned on me that Gaston was a member of the Armour family in Chicago who owned a very popular Black owned grocery store. The Armour family has established a tradition in Chicago of being a family of business people.
From that moment on, Brother Gaston began to lobby me to become a part of MATAH. One of our members, Sister Iris Dunmore, had been attending some of the local MATAH meetings on our behalf and suggested that we should give the MATAH concept a chance. Finally, I broke down and agreed to meet with Brother Ken at my home earlier this year. The meeting was only to be for an hour, just to touch base. However, Ken and I hit it off so well, we met in my living room for over four hours. It was truly a meeting of the spirit of our ancestors and from that day forward, Ken and I began talking every week on a regular basis. It was out of that meeting that we made the linkage between the demand for external reparations and its relationship to what we must do to repair ourselves, which we began to call “internal reparations.” It became clear to me that Ken Bridges was a deep thinker, and a brilliant organizer who had committed his life to the liberation of Black people by making his vision of MATAH become a reality. MATAH, as Ken explained it to me, was a concept given to him by God. Ken constantly made the point that “MATAH was an economic movement of self determination for Africans in America and around the world.” Ken always reminded his audiences when speaking that “MATAH
emphasizes African cultural development and therefore the products and services that the organization represents would focus on the promotion of African culture.” Ken helped NBUF understand that by becoming a Network Business Center, we could help finance the work of NBUF. We had begun working on identifying one-hundred NBUF members who would be willing to purchase $30.00 worth of MATAH products each month that would provide NBUF with a profit of $600.00 a month. A simple but powerful formula if executed. Ken and his friend, and business partner, Al Willington, had created a vision for products made by African people to be purchased and distributed by African people around the world. The key component of the MATAH concept, as Ken taught, is not only should we purchase products from each other that we produce, but we must also control the distribution of these products. In the name of Kenneth Bridges, we should carry the MATAH vision forward by remembering that “MATAH are those people of African descent who know that practicing a race-first philosophy is the key to obtaining true freedom for people of African descent, and who refuse to be crushed.” Let us always honor the spirit of our Brother, Ken Bridges.
PARTIAL TAPES ARE TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE By Julianne Malveaux Keith Lamont Scott was killed by a police officer on Tuesday, September 20, in Charlotte, North Carolina. The officer, dressed in civilian clothing, said that Mr. Scott had a gun and that he did not follow verbal orders to put his hands up. While there is videotape that documents the interaction between Scott and Officer Brentley Vinson, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney had, as of Thursday, declined to release the tapes because there was “no compelling reason” to do so. By Saturday, public protest along with a disturbing tape released by Scott’s wife, provided a compelling reason. Still, Chief Putney released just two short snippets of the shooting and indicated that more videotape was being withheld. The compelling reason for the Charlotte police to release all of the videotape is because there is a significant difference between what they say happened and what the Scott family says. The police say that Scott had a gun; 6
the family says he was in his car reading a book and waiting for one of his sons to come home from school. Having reviewed the tapes, the family says it has more questions than answers. Allowing others to see the tape will likely raise more questions, but it will also close the trust gap. Failing to release the full video suggests that the Charlotte police have something to hide. Releasing tape snippets seems like appeasement, like the drip, drip, drip of the police trying to make a case. The North Carolina NAACP, the ACLU, and many others have called for release of all the tapes, but the police chief has dug his heels in. Does he have something in common with Rahm Emmanuel, the Chicago mayor who claimed there was nothing to hide on the Laquan McDonald tapes. They were released more than a year after his murder, and they contradicted the police version of his killing. We didn’t have the luxury of tapes during enslavement, yet we know that horrors were visited on Black people. Slave owner jour-

Dr. Julianne Malveaux nals, along with some of the implements of torture that have been discovered (and may be displayed in our new Museum) document the horrors, but imagine having tapes of it. We don’t have tapes of lynchings, although there are pictures of those lynched, though they are conspicuously absent in many history books. We don’t have tapes of Rosewood or of the evis-
ceration of Black Wall Street. Indeed, the carnage that economically envious whites visited on a successful African American community is so shameful that white Tulsans have attempted to erase the record of their cowardly acts – the newspaper articles that recounted white cowardice went missing decades ago. We don’t have tapes of the police brutality that caused so many Black deaths in the early and mid twentieth century. We know the brutality existed, and we know police officers were never charged “back in the day” for killing or torturing Black people. The fact that we didn’t have tapes then contributes to the urgency that we get tapes now. I don’t know what the tape shows, but I know that I don’t want to leave it to my imagination, and I don’t want a minute here, two minutes there, when we know cameras should have been running for much longer. When another Black man is shot and killed and the police version is that he had a gun, the public deserves to see if the tape backs that version up.
Blacks Must control their own coMMunity
If there is a video record of a police interaction with an African American, it ought to be released, and it ought not to be edited. Failure to do so fueled the anger that spilled over onto Charlotte streets on the evenings of September 20 and 21. Once the family saw the tapes and shared their concerns, people were back on the streets on September 22, but they were peaceful, and the atmosphere was much less tense than it had been. There is a marked contrast between the behavior of the police establishment in Tulsa and that in Charlotte. In Tulsa, the videotape was released just a couple of days after Officer Betty Shelby shot Terence Crutcher. Not a week had passed before the officer was charged with first-degree manslaughter, based on what prosecutors saw on the tapes. People in Tulsa have been outraged, but peaceful. People in Charlotte feel outraged, but also hurt and betrayed. It is interesting that Rykeyia Scott keeps telling the police that (Continued on page 13) www.chicagocrusader.com

WHAT DEBATE WERE THEY WATCHING? Now Ima will tell anybody that she ain’t no Ph.D. but what presidential debate was the Republicans supporting Trump looking at? Even little kids on the street who saw the debate know Hillary kicked butt – Trump’s butt. Try as dey may Trump looked like the bumbling idiot he is. He had no plans, he can’t even fake foreign policy, he has insulted everybody and he lost his cool during the 90 minutes of the campaign. One thing for sure he didn’t look presidential at all. So why are all these folks talking about voting for Trump? ‘Cause dey are idiots and bigots like him. And let’s not forget chauvinistic. Nobody wants
Donald have a mirror? Ima says he must not have one, cause if women look like pigs, he’s wearing their feed on his head! And how can he call anybody fat? He ain’t exactly slim himself. That’s the funny part. SERIOUSLY??? It’s good business to the Donald when he swindles folks out of their money. That’s what he said when confronted with promising to pay one thing and then not paying what he promised to vendors. He said maybe they didn’t do a good job and not paying any income tax when he estimated that he made around $465 million dollars last year. Not paying taxes he said was being smart. When confronted with the fact that he was sued for real estate discrimination he said that he wasn’t the only one. Never mind that he discriminated against Black people. Then he pointed to a community in Florida where the median income begins with a million dollars and he says he don’t discriminate there! Seriously, maybe because they can’t afford to be there, not even for an evening out! Hillary was talking about making college more affordable or free and he swindled college students that went to Trump University and the money they spent not recovered and no degree, no transferrable credits. For that alone he ought to be hung up by his shoestrings.
having a very good night!! The other complaint was Lester Holt acted beyond a moderator and wouldn’t let him keep taking the subject away from the subject at hand and he tried to keep him from interrupting Hillary Clinton when she was speaking and he tried to keep him within the time allotted for his responses, rebuttals and everything else. How can such a bully whine so much???

paying their fair share of taxes. A case in point. On Wednesday Mike Ditka, businessman, sports commentator and whatever and Tom Ricketts, owner of the Cubs attended a fundraiser for the Donald. And I betcha they want him to win ’cause he won’t make them pay what they should in income taxes. They would rather deny other Americans the right to a decent life just so they can still be rich. I’m not surprised about Ditka. I hope Mr. Ricketts don’t jinx the Cubs by supporting this bigot. Don’t birds of a feather folk together??? -Ima-

The other 20 he knew wouldn’t call him out when he spoke which accounted for the total audience (330 + 20 = 350). Now somebody blew smoke in all open holes and told him that was going to quiet the natives and maybe they won’t vote him out of office in about three years. Ya’ll better stop lying to the Mare! All that money spent on the police would be better spent to give the citizens some jobs and if they ain’t got no skills, train them so they can get a job. You don’t have to be a Rocket Scientist to get that. You better come on out here in the hood and talk to folks like “The Urban Translator.” It’s lot cheaper and maybe you’ll get some results. Remember after your speech some 22 folks got shot that weekend??? So much for that hogwash!!!

Tickets are $125 each with table sponsorship available to this semi-formal event. Without question he is one of the www.chicagocrusader.com
national treasures and a bridge between all forms of jazz and R&B music with three solo albums. His performances electrify the audience with both his technical ability and his heartfelt musical passages. In addition to a fabulous threecourse dinner, the evening will feature the sounds of legendary performer Michael Manson, as host for the evening, along with co-host Lana Manson. Guests will also be treated to a special performance by the gifted students of the Musical Arts Institute.
The theme “Igniting the Flames of Excellence” was appropriately chosen for this year’s event as the talents presented by the students will remind attendees of the importance of supporting Musical Arts Education in underserved communities and the power therein. The Musical Arts Institute is transforming lives through music every day because it offers opportunities
when compared to the thousands of Chicago area children without access to musical education. Since it was established in 2010, the Musical Arts Institute continues to provide highquality music education through various programs. They understand and promote music because they know it changes lives by empowering the children, families and communities in which they live. Its Founder and Executive Director is bassist, music educator, and host of this year’s event, Michael Manson. Having enjoyed 35 years of career success with artists such as George Duke, Al Jareau, Kirk Whalum, and many others, Manson felt a need to give back to his Chicago home, where role models were not accessible for many of our youth. Working together with CoFounder and Co-Executive Director, Lana Manson, the couple has organized an amazing team of professional musicians/educators to provide outstanding music instruction in Chicago’s underserved areas regardless of a child’s ability to pay. Both Mike and Lana are graduates of Northwestern University (Bienen

Kevin Whalum School of Music) and have a cumulative total of more than 30 years of experience in Music Education. The team established the school’s home office on March 20, 2010 at 9244 South Lafayette in Chicago, Illinois. Noting that students within CPS and other highly populated African American communities lacked access to the advanced music instruction, the founders sought to establish an organization to equip students to
compete for college scholarships and/or students for sustainable professional careers in music. The Musical Arts Institute is a 501c3 non-profit organization and has been honored as one of Illinois’ top rated nonprofits for three consecutive years. Stay in School Initiative improves graduation rates Exelon, Comed, And United Way Of Metropolitan Chicago Helped Successfully Fight Dropout Rates For The 11th Year At CPS Schools Eleven years after the Stay in School Initiative was created by Exelon, ComEd and the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago to fight the high dropout and truancy rates in various Chicago Public Schools, Stay in School and its six community partners have served over 25,000 students ages 11 and up. The 2015-16 Report Card revealed that 92 percent of students who actively participated in the Stay in School programs were excelling and eligible for graduation. This incredible progress is attributed to the holistic menu of programs the initiative and its partners offer to students and their families. Some of these programs include tutoring, social services, development of pro-social behaviors, parent involvement classes, a reward and recognition program, mentoring and a skills-building workshop. Stay in School also provides afterschool programs to high school students from neighborhoods where school dropout rates are among the highest in the city, including Austin, Humboldt Park/West Town, Bridgeport, Cicero, North Lawndale and Grand Crossing. “The students we serve through the Stay in School program have not always been given the resources and opportunities they deserve,” said Steve Solomon, president of the Exelon Foundation. “For the past 11 years, Exelon and its partners have worked to give students the support they need to help their education and prepare for the future. We are so proud of

They work with students to build tangible career skills including how to write a resume, how to network and interview for a job and appropriate behaviors necessary for a corporate job. Additionally, more than 200 employees have donated their time to the community partners by participating in mentoring workshops, special events at their schools, summer community service projects, renovation and landscaping projects, student recogni- THE STAY IN SCHOOL Initiative has helped students to think beyond high school to future careers after college like these students from left to right: Chenelle Somerville, Lauren Moy, tion events and cultural events. “Working with Stay in School Gerardo Palma and J’Meer Walton.

Now, I just started my second year of college and I plan to pursue my masters in communications. I can’t wait to see what my future holds.” The Stay in School Initiative has kept students on track for graduation and instilled in them a desire for academic achievement. The 2015-16 Report Card surveyed 692 students who participated most intensively in Stay in School programs and found: • 91% of students had at least a 90% attendance rate • The percent of students with 90% school attendance is up sig-

Each agency is focused on encouraging Chicago students to engage more actively in academics and contribute positively to society. Eddie Murphy is good in ‘Mr. Church’ with no jokes and even a tear or two By Raymond Ward FUNNY BUSINESS: A member of the entertainment world’s most loved family, The Wayans, Shawn Wayans will bring his act to The Improv, October 7th through 9th, and a great time is absolutely promised. Shawn Wayans made his acting debut in 1989 in his brother Keenen Ivory Wayans’ feature film “I’m Gonna Get You Sucka.” Immediately following his feature film debut, Shawn joined the cast of the Emmy Award winning comedy series, “In Living Color.” Shawn starred in the box office hits, “Little Man” and “White Chicks,” both of which he also co-wrote and co-executive produced. Shawn began co-writing his string of blockbusters with the smash “Scary Movie,” where he also played “Ray,” an ambiguously gay football jock, alongside his brother Marlon Wayans and directed by Keenan Ivory Wayans. Co-written, co-executive produced by and starring Shawn Wayans “Scary Movie 2” was the only sequel in the Scary Movie” franchise with direct Wayans involvement. Shawn’s past film credits include the hit comedy “Don’t Be A Men-

When not on the road performing standup, Shawn can be found hard at work in the “lab” where he and his brothers are busy concocting their next project. Show times are Friday, October 7th at 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.; Saturday, October 8th at 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. and Sunday, October 9th at 7:00 p.m.. Tickets are $28 per person. TRIBUTE TIME: Traveling Soul: A Curtis Mayfield Tribute will take place on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. at The Promontory, located at 5311 South Lake Park Avenue in Chicago. This event will celebrate the release of Traveling Soul, Todd Mayfield’s biography of his late father Curtis Mayfield, and include Syd Brown and the Mayfield All Stars performing in tribute to Curtis Mayfield and to Mayfield’s protege Reginald Torian, Sr., who passed away earlier this year. A star-studded cast of Mayfield’s friends and fans will perform his greatest hits with the band and Todd Mayfield will speak about his father’s work and legacy. The event will also serve as a benefit for the Musical Arts Institute. Tickets range in price from $15 to $30. 12

(Continued from page 12) ward the end, he turns out to be the only family that Charlie has. It’s slow moving at first, but Mr. Church does just what he is supposed to do—cook meals for the mother and daughter. At night he leaves and returns in the morning to prepare breakfast. The mother is bedridden, and her late boyfriend, to whom she played his mistress, paid for Mr. Church to take care of her for only the six months. But the six months rolls on and on, and Charlie learns to accept Mr. Church—even bragging about him to her classmates. Charlie and her best friend Poppy attend an elite school, at the behest of school administrators who awarded them both scholarships. Time goes on, and the mother eventually passes away, but throughout their relationship, she calls Murphy Mr. Church and he refers to her as ma’am. Charlie eventually goes away to college, but still doesn’t know much about Mr. Church’s private life. The two of them have a brief “heart-to-heart one night
when she pries, with Mr. Church adamantly telling her that this is the only thing that he has private—and what he does when he leaves her house is none of her business. This mystery about Mr. Church makes this role for Murphy even more appealing. He is fantastic as the sophisticated, dignified man who enjoys cooking and brings life into the home, even as he thoroughly enjoys his friends and life after hours. I find it interesting that Charlie just couldn’t be content NOT knowing what Mr. Church did after he left her home. It’s like an old saying to which I can’t accurately attribute the author—“You want my dreams, too?” (I think it’s the late Richard Pryor). The film begins in the early 70s and spans about 15 years, until Charlie has to return back to Los Angeles, with only Mr. Church as a friend. She unexpectedly arrives at his door one day, pregnant and not finished with school. But, in the same vein that Mr. Church kept his privacy, at first he doesn’t ask her a

It is not all “kumbaya,” but it shows love all the way around for everyone in the household, even more so than Charlie could have imagined when she was young and so outspoken against Mr. Church being in the home. “Mr. Church” was first screened at the recent Tribeca Film Festival and is based on a real friendship that the screenwriter Susan McMartin enjoyed with her family cook who became her best friend and father figure. At first I didn’t think I would like it, as I imagined “The Help” and “Driving Miss Daisy” (which has the same director Bruce Beresford, with the Black person taking care of the white family. He does take care of the family, and some critics have panned it because of this relationship. However, I enjoyed seeing Murphy in a non-comedic role, and it would be nice if he only returns to his music career and his backyard for a little bit and is offered more dramatic roles. “Mr. Church” is playing at theaters everywhere in the Chicago area. LETTER TO THE EDITOR (Continued from page 4) some idea why certain things are happening. His speech assured us he is totally clueless. Anybody who has even a cursory knowledge of what is happening knows there are thousands of men and scores of programs in the city that mentor our students on many levels day after day. For Emanuel to single out one of them for new funding was wrong-minded and misleading. By citing the Becoming A Man organization and excluding so many others, the mayor in essence devalued those organizations’ work. Politically it was a stupid move because by omitting those groups he lessened his potential support. I guess his advisors who seem not to know much more about Black Chicago than the mayor
thrust the one organization in front of him. Even when one takes into account the fact the President a few years ago called out BAM for special recognition doesn’t mean others aren’t doing a great job. I guess it was safest for Emanuel to pick out an organization that is affiliated with the University of Chicago, rather than one that is excelling without academic or other philanthropic backing. It seems ironic that he talks about BAM in the same context as violence. The young men in that organization have proven they want to avoid the dangers of the streets are not the ones who are committing crimes and shooting people. What was he thinking? If he wants to really curb this violence he would
have introduced an initiative to do something about it now. He would have propped up those on the frontline of reducing violence. Because he did not do that, it sends a clear signal Emanuel is not at all interested in solving Chicago’s crime problem. Anyone who listened to or read his speech knows there was not one thing in it that detailed how he was going to address the worst state of crime in Chicago in decades. It was lip service at its finest. I sure hope Chicagoans, especially those of us on the south and west sides are not lulled into contentment with Emanuel’s speech. There is no plan to improve Black Chicago. Mercer Howell

A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe What’s in your dash? Yes, the summer Olympics just ended, however this is not in reference to the 100-yard dash or the 400-meter dash. This dash is personal. It’s every move you make and every breath you take beginning with your birthdate and ending on the day you transition from this earth. If you have breath you have purpose. The dash is about how well you live your daily life. Exactly what are you doing? Abraham Lincoln said, “In the end, it’s not the years in your life, but the life in your years.” Lillian Dixon likened life to a coin “You spend any way you wish—but you can only spend it once.” Therefore, the question, is ‘how are you spending the life you have been given?’ A great way to unpack that question is to think about the following ‘Am I making a living or am I living my making?’ At the end of the day, is it about a paycheck or fulfillment? Too often, people live a life that is empty, unfulfilling and passionless. Don’t be one of them. Let’s look at what is considered the three most
important days of your life. The day you were born. Your life is not a mistake but rather an integral part of God’s plan. The bible verse Jeremiah 29:11 indicates that God is intentional about your life. You are a part of His Master Plan. “He knows the plan he has for you, thoughts to give you a hope and a future.” Your future is God’s History! The day when you discover why you were born. This is when you become intentional about the significance of God’s plan for your life. It is your responsibility to seek Him in prayer, guidance and direction for the path that He has already given you before creation. When you begin to do what you were born to do. It is absolutely crucial that you understand that you are vitally important to the world. You were created for such a time as this. You have a different fingerprint and you have a different life print. No one can do what God has ordained for you. What God has for me—it is for me! To be honest, it is vital and significant that you fulfill those dreams and God given destiny because it’s so much bigger than what you could
come. People see God shining through you in ministry and the marketplace “You are the light of the world and the salt of the earth” (Matt 15:13-14). In the meantime, think about what puts a smile on your face. What would you do for free? It’s been said that ‘when you love what you do—it’s no longer work—it’s your passion.’ In your passion—you will find your purpose. Chances are—you are already doing it and have been for quite some time. So often, we overlook the forest for the trees. Your gift is right there—use it. Walk in the area that has been destined for you. The minute you start, the sooner you bless yourself and the world. Most importantly, the sooner, God gets the glory. The calling and purpose for your life is God’s gift to you. How you use it is your gift to God. Your Heavenly Father has a perfect plan for your life. Just ask. At this Effie Rolfe point in life, you need to be sure of ever imagine. When you live your your life’s calling. There is no room making—you are manifesting what for careless mistakes that could cause God has designed for your life to in- a set back of 20 years. So in addition spire, impact and bless generations to to wisdom, pray for insight and per-
ception. You need detailed instructions to know your next move. Ask and God will give you a sense of knowing. It could be a request to do something; a dream or spoken word but someway you will know. Your dash is your life right now. Therefore, living your life on purpose is an absolute must and it gives a summary of what you’ve done and how you are remembered. Make a concerted effort to keep your dash from ending with woulda’, coulda’ and shoulda’. Got talent—use them to be a blessing and be blessed. Let your contribution make a difference and change the world for generations to come. Live life full - Die empty! Young and running a sizzling family business (Continued from page 1) of four. Well-mannered and humble individuals, the two have carved out nice lifestyles after taking over the business from their 60-year-old father, Michael. As the founder of Best Barbeque, he recently retired and moved to Tampa, FL, where he now owns a Popeye’s Louisana Chicken Franchise. Since leaving Chicago, his two children have run the takeout eatery, doing everything from taking orders from customers to managing Best Barbeque’s 20 employees, some of whom have been working at the place since it opened in 1996. For Jheri and Derek, it’s an operation that has afforded them a piece of the American Dream while they’re young. Best Barbeque has also taught them about the value of hard work as they take on the challenge of maintaining the quality and reputation of their family-owned business. With high expectations and tough standards the two are rising up to the pressures of continuing a proud tradition their parents started two decades ago. Their aunt, Shirley Williams, has been in the business for 40 years and built 10 barbeque rib joints. One is just minutes away on the other side of I-57. It’s Friday morning at Best Barbeque. The eatery is about two hours away from opening for business. While some employees are firing up the grill to cook the day’s meat, Jheri and Derek and their father sat down with a Crusader reporter for an interview. The meeting is held at a round dinner table in the staff kitchen. Derek is the quiet one, but he warms up about 20 minutes into the interview. Jheri is more loquacious. Articulate, she loves a good conversation. Although it’s the start of another busy weekend, the summer season is considered the slowest part of the year. During this time, many cook their own barbeque with the children home from school. For Best Barbeque, the business gets a boost from the traffic next door, where a LA Fitness health club anchors a strip shopping center that was built five years ago. After it opened in 2011, business at Best Barbeque increased by 20 percent, Michael said. Although retired, Michael from time to time coaches his children on how to manage the business. The biggest lesson his children is learning is how to master the art of customer services in particular situations. It’s an essential ingredient that he reminds his children to include in their operations. “We get calls from him everyday. He would always ask, did you do this?,” Jheri said. Those expectations include working long hours to keep the business in tip top shape. It’s a standard that can put a lot of pressure on two young business executives who are still growing personally and professionally. “We try our best to live up to that expectation,” said Derek. 20
The demands and responsibilities of running a popular rib joint have forced Jheri and Derek to work 12 and 14hour days. During very busy times, including holidays, they work seven days a week. They said the workload can sometimes be overwhelming, but the benefits they say makes it all worth it. “We had an employee who quit the other week and we had to take over her shift,” Jheri said. She worked five days a week. So we were here around the clock. “We want to make sure we have good customer service,” said Jheri. “We have to remain professional no matter how our customers are acting.” Best Barbeque sells rib tips, turkey tips, hot links and barbeque chicken. Before the meat is grilled over chopped wood, it’s marinated and seasoned for two days with a secret family recipe. “We just don’t throw it on the grill. It takes two days to prepare the meat. We do it the old school way,” Michael said. “We have people coming in from Iowa. We have quite a few white customers too.” Michael said. The rib tips are still the hottest selling item, but the turkey tips are an unique item that’s becoming just as popular because they taste good and are healthier to eat. In fact, many customers say they are as good as the rib tips. Some customers often say they can’t tell the difference between the two. Michael said patrons of the LA Fitness next door often stop by for the turkey tips. “They’re more health conscious, ” Derek said. Another hot-selling item are the hot links. They are juicy and have a good kick. Michael said the business sells about 200 pounds of hot links a week. Best Barbeque also serves up homemade peach cobbler, a dessert that’s constantly flying off the shelves. “We go through 30 pans a week,” said Derek Jackson. The weekends are the busiest times. Holidays are also big business, but New Year’s Eve is Best Barbeque’s biggest day for sales. Best Barbeque also does catering for private events. For several years it catered barbeque for the Chicago Defender during the annual Bud Billiken parade. The Jacksons say their business remain popular among celebrities, including Chicago Bulls player Dwyane Wade, who stopped by several weeks prior to this interview in August. When they were asked to take over Best barbeque when their dad retired, the two agreed with little hesitation. “We just jumped right in. We had no second thoughts because we wanted to keep the family business going,” said Jheri, who used to worked for eight years as a social service employee for the Oklahoma Department of Human Services before she joined Best Barbeque full time. Derek is originally from Tampa, FL. He taught karate before he joined the family business.

A fitness buff, Derek prefers the barbeque chicken. Michael said Best Barbeque is a business that gives back to the community. “I’m a big believer in recycling and giving back to the community and using other Black businesses. Our accountant is Black and our attorney is Black. Our supplies and everything we buy are from Black-owned companies. Our distributors and suppliers are Black-owned.”
Best Barbeque is strictly a takeout eatery. Food lovers just take their ribs and go. Next door is the Black Cat Lounge, a facility that Best Barbeque leases to a businessman. Michael said he would have expanded Best Barbeque, over the years, but never followed through with it. In April, Best Barbeque opened a second location at 79th and Loomis. That one is managed by Alderman Carrie Austin’s grandson. The Jackson family said they’re currently looking to open a sit down Seafood restaurant. As part of the new generation, Jheri said she has started a digital website to attract more customers. She said her main focus is using social media to expand Best Barbeque’s customer base. To family members, Derek is known

as the Facebook king. Jheri said being well-rounded is important in keeping Best Barbeque a quality institution. “We strive to learn every aspect of our job,” Jheri said. “We’re not perfect. We’ve had some rough days. We have to be strong like our parents. For their father, Michael, retiring from the business that he ran for two decades was bittersweet. “I miss the employees,” he said. They’re like family. When you’ve been around someone for 50 to 60 hours a week, you grow attached to them. They’re a diamond in the rough.” “We did a good job raising them,” Michael said. “What we instilled in them is that if you want nice things, you have to work for them.”
