Coyden Palmer Last week, Alderman Roderick Sawyer (6th) did what many in the community have wanted to do for years: He introduced a resolution calling for a moratorium to be placed on Chicago Public Schools (CPS) that will prevent any new charter schools from opening for 2015 and 2016. The resolution was sent to Rev. James Meeks, chairman of the Illinois State Board of Education, along with CPS’ administrators. The resolution comes less than a month before a Chicago Board of Education meeting where the approval of potentially 22 new charter schools is under consideration. Sawyer joins many parents and Black educators who believe charter schools continue to have a negative impact on enrollment and funding of traditional public schools where the majority of students are Black
and Hispanic. In arguing his case to cease the expansion of the controversial charter school plan, Sawyer said neighborhood schools are “anchors for communities,” and that he believes charter schools take away necessary financial resources from neighborhood schools. “As we impoverish the neighborhood schools, they inevitably become less desirable places. It’s a zero-sum game, as the lo-
cal school is bled dry,” explained Sawyer to the Crusader on Sept. 29. “Just a few years ago, CPS closed 50 public, neighborhood schools. The last thing we need is 22 new, privately-managed charter schools added to the pool.” He went on to say the vast majority of aldermen oppose the opening of new charters this year as the city deals with a massive budget crisis. Sawyer secured 41 aldermen (Continued on page 2)
More of Chicago’s elected officials and clergy are speaking out against crime, as more senseless shootings plague the city’s South Side neighborhoods. Pastors from Chicago and New York took their message of peace to Daley Plaza on Monday, September 28, where they held a rally and prayed for an end to the gunfire. The rally came as Chicago experienced its deadliest September in 13 years, prompting Mayor Rahm Emanuel to speak out against gun violence. One of the victims was Patricia Chew, a pregnant mother who was gunned down in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on Tuesday, September 29. She was the sister of Persha Chew, who was carrying groceries into her home when a car drove by and opened fire, killing Patricia and Persha’s mother, Lolita Wells. Persha’s nephew was shot on his left side. Emanuel expressed his anger against the shootings. “Wherever you live, you should be able to get out of your car and go to your home,” he told the media. Another shooting occurred last Monday night after a barbeque in Fuller Park. Here, five people who were remembering a loved one who died in a car crash in 2003, were shot as they headed home. Three of them died. They include Ayanna Northern, 22, who was shot in the chest died on a playground. Antian Hardemon, 25 and Tyrone Spike, 29 died after they were both shot in the head and were pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital. More than 50 people were shot in Chicago in the past two weekends. That’s high than August, where more than 40 were shot on four consecutive weekends. (Continued on page 3)
CPS cuts to Special Education programs delayed Chicago Crusader staff report Four days after it announced millions in additional budget cuts to special education programs, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) said it would delay its decision after school officials expressed concerns the cuts would affect students with special needs. CPS announced in June that it would slash $42 million in budget cuts to special education programs, a move that would close 200 positions geared toward helping special needs students. But on Friday, September 25 the District said it would make an additional $12 million in cuts which would hit special needs programs. CPS officials initially said the additional
cuts were needed because of declining enrollment. The District said in the past five years, CPS has lost almost 3,000 Special Education students while the number of staff members remained the same. Parents disagreed with CPS’ latest decision. Many dispute CPS claims of declining enrollment. Some reminded the District of a federal law that requires an individualized education plan for every Special Education student. Without one, they say, the CPS could face lawsuits. “The District’s approach towards special education has a lot in common with their approach to the mass school closings in 2013, where they used a blunt metric for assessing buildings as a stand-in for the real world usages that diverse communities
have for their schools, which are far more than just buildings,” said the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) in a statement. CPS Chief Executive Forrest Claypool insists the student’s needs would be met. He said CPS’s decision to delay the additional cuts is a temporary one. He reversed his decision last Tuesday after hearing the concerns. “Over the next month, we are going to be looking back at every individual student plan and making sure that the parents and the principal of the school understand that it’s met, and it will be,” Claypool said at a Chicago Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, September 29. Jailed mother and son share a special bond By Chinta Strausberg Neither the 1984 picture of 28year-old Willie “Wimp” Stokes nor the infamous drug life of his father, Willie “Flukey” Stokes or that of Stokes’ nephew, Gordon Battle, 35, who died in a similar blazing hail of bullets will define this mother and son, who years later bonded and transformed their minds behind prison walls. Gordon Joseph Battle, 35, is a father of two children. His own father, Gordon “Chip” Battle, a notorious drug dealer, was shot to death in 1991 in Hyde Park. He died a similar death as his uncle, the feared drug kingpin, Willie “Flukey” Stokes whose son, Willie “Wimp” Stokes, 28, was gunned down in 1984 and buried in a custom-made Cadillac with $100 bills placed in his fingers. That is the image most people have of young Battle and his mother, Mica V. Garrett, the former wife of Gordon Battle. But neither the mother nor the son will allow their past family history define who they are today. Both mother and son have gone to prison for drug-related crimes and have turned their lives around. When Willie “Wimp” Stokes was assassinated, young Battle was only 4 years old. Battle, who brought his 7-year-old son to the interview, said he only saw “Wimp” alive once. He said the picture of his cousin being buried in a fake Cadillac with diamonds on his fingers and $100 bills stuck in his hands still haunts his family today. Yet, they refuse to allow that experience to shape their futures. He and his mother’s remarkable story of recovery and redemption
gives hope to others who are caught in the clutches of robbery and drugrelated crimes. Together, they beat the odds and have not only left “the life” but the mother went on to get her master’s degree in criminal justice and is working on her Ph.D. at the University of Phoenix. The son is in real estate rehabbing, selling houses and hiring from the community. But the road that led both of them to a crime-free life was far from easy. Garrett, who is now the executive director of Bridge to Freedom (B2F), works on the West Side with men and women who are returning from prison. Her goal is to build a social justice school in the Auburn Gresham community, and her son is planning a youth peace summit on October 17 in the Hyde Park/Kenwood community. He wants to help stop the violence. When his uncle, his father and cousin were murdered, young Battle said he was well aware of their life style. “I’ve never run from my past, but it does not define me, either,” he said as his son looked into his eyes. His father was murdered when he was 11-years-old. His mother, who has since remarried, was once married to Gordon “Chip” Battle for 16 years. She is the mother of three. Garrett was in prison from 1995 to 2002. While there, her son, Gordon Battle, said, “We took care of ourselves. Aldermen whose signatures were notably absent from the resolution included five African-American aldermen: Will Burns (4th), Willie Cochran (20th), Walter Burnett (27th), Carrie Austin (34th), and Emma Mitts (37th). Charter schools are selective institutions that claim to provide a richer academic curriculum than traditional public schools. State law allows charters to open regardless of whether local school districts want them. In Chicago, there are 112 charter schools, according to the Illinois Network of Charter Schools. Many of these charter schools are located on the city’s South Side where enrollment in traditional public schools has been declining for years. Many parents and educators blame the decline on charter 2
schools, which receive funding from CPS. Currently, over 90 percent of charter school students in Illinois are served in Chicago. As of the 2013-14 school year, charter students made up 14 percent of the district overall, 23 percent of high school students and 10 percent of elementary students, according to the Illinois Network of Charter Schools. CPS has denied some charter applications, but the Illinois State Charter School Commission has approved them anyway. It’s a grim reality for Chicago and public schools systems around the country, where millions of parents and educators have grown frustrated over the devastating impact charter schools have had over public institutions. While some schools have suffered funding cuts due to dwindling enrollment, many public schools have been

Roderick Sawyer shuttered altogether. Some of these schools were iconic institutions that have been around for decades. Critics of charter schools have said they disproportionately hurt African-American communities and children more than anyone
else. The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) and the Kenwood Oakland Community Organization (KOCO) have applauded and support Sawyer’s resolution. KOCO representative Jitu Brown said the people of Chicago who are funding public schools need to become more involved on this issue. “For years, we have been telling people that charter schools are a danger to communities because they take away the resources needed for our kids to get a quality education,” Brown said. “They (charter schools) are nothing more than a tax write-off for the rich. Their curriculum is not what our kids need.” The Illinois Network of Charter Schools say Sawyer’s proposed moratorium on charter schools is misguided and puts on hold the hopes of thousands of Chicago families. They said a new law would keep thousands of students

in limbo on charter school waitlists. “We agree that Chicago Public Schools and City Hall must be extraordinarily judicious with resources in a time of budget constraints. But, we firmly disagree that an entire category of schools—a category that includes the highest performing open-enrollment schools in the city— should be stopped in their tracks.” In his proposal, Sawyer said each student who enrolls in a new charter takes with him or her percapita student allotment of dollars, thus, reducing the available funds to support the neighborhood school. The loss of students in the local public school results in the loss of teacher positions. “Whole communities are anchored by strong neighborhood schools, and it should be our priority to support them fully first,” Sawyer contends. www.chicagocrusader.com

On the midnight train to Georgia Affluent Blacks are leaving Chicago for the South, report says More affluent Blacks are leaving Chicago for the South, according to a recent Nielsen report.The report, entitled “Increasingly Affluent, Educated and Diverse: African-American Consumers – the Untold Story” gives fresh insight on the lives of the Black consumers with annual household incomes of $75,000. It also aims to examine outdated stereotypes about Blacks, from education and income to media consumption and social engagement. According to the report, Chicago and Detroit have both dropped out of the top 10 as the preferred cities for Black households earning more than $100,000. They were replaced by Southern cities, including Baton Rouge, LA and Augusta-Aiken, GA. Seven southern cities are now on the top 10 list for the affluent Black households. In 2000, Chicago’s metropolitan area ranked seventh on a list of cities with the largest percentage of Black households that earn $100,000 or more. Today, Chicago ranks 21st, with
some 2.1 percent Black households earning at least that much. Washington, D.C. is the top city, where 7.2 percent of Black households earned $100,000 or more. Rounding out the top 10 are Baltimore (5.1 percent); Nofolk, VA (3.9 percent); Atlanta (3.6 percent); Richmond-Petersburg, VA (3.5 percent); Baton Rouge (3.4 percent); Memphis, Tenn (3.4 percent); New York (3.1 percent); Columbus, GA (3 percent) and Augusta-Aiken, GA -S.C. (2.9 percent). This is the first time Columbus, GA placed in the top 10 for affluent Black households. The city is home to major corporations, including Aflac and TSYS, a credit card processor. Georgia had the highest number of incoming Blacks. Some 3,631 Blacks left Illinois for Atlanta and Columbus between 2006 and 2010. Many affluent Blacks in Atlanta live in Alpharetta, a wealthy suburb north of the city. Alabama had the third highest in Black migration with some 822 people coming to the state. There is no leadership.” After Garrett was released from prison in 2002, she opened a restaurant in Arkansas and named it ‘Just Released.’ Business wasn’t what she wanted it to be so she got a job at a bank thanks to a federal (grant) government drug prevention program. Ironically, she worked in a federal building at a bank in Camden, Arkansas. The bank had a contract with her restaurant to do the catering; that is until her friend ratted her out. www.chicagocrusader.com
Her friend told the vice president of the bank that she was once in prison and wasn’t surprised when he told her they could not keep her because of her record. “No one asked me if I had gone to Prison,” Garrett said. Ironically, the grandson of the woman who blew the whistle on him took the bank keys and stole all of the bank’s petty money. After three years in the South, Garrett came back to Chicago and went back to school. Joining her in the interview was Edward C. Davis IV, a professor of African American studies in anthropologies, Social Science chair, Malcolm X College. He agreed with Garrett that “renegades who are calling the shots are children who don’t have a family. And these children living on the streets have caused today’s genocide of Blacks.” Where today’s killings are going on, Davis said it was a good neighborhood back in the day but then came crack cocaine resulting in the disappearance of Black men who either went to jail or the cemetery. “It was the beginning of the destruction of the Black community of the Black family,” he said. Davis said jobs dried up, but prisons flourished. He also blames Chicago’s segregated city for the violence, arguing it led to their feeding on each other as witnessed by the daily body count of gunshot victims. Garrett said Blacks “do not have the means to make the plans used to transport guns and drugs, so who is doing this? We don’t know Mexican cartels so where are these drugs com-

In reponse to the shootings, Commissioner Richard Boykin (D- 1st District) announced plans to re-introduce his ordinance calling for the appointment of a Cook County Gun Violence Czar. The Gun Czar position as outlined in Boykin’s legislation will coordinate law enforcement, public health, judicial and economic policy among various units of government for the single, express purpose of halting gun violence on an expedited timetable. “All elected officials, community stakeholders and citizens have a moral obligation to declare an all out war on the violence that has paralyzed entire communities in Cook County” said Boykin. EDITORIAL WHAT DO CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICANS WANT TO CONSERVE? President Barack Obama has experienced a lot of opposition from conservative Congressional Republicans who have attempted to thwart him at every turn, sometimes shooting themselves in the foot in doing so. They have opposed his stances on immigration, climate change, minimum wage increases, marriage equality, foreign policy, and just about anything that comes out of his mouth, especially if it benefits the downtrodden masses. Arguably, the opposition that Obama faces, and has faced, throughout his tenure as U.S. president, does not stem just from race, though it is tempting to conclude this. The support shown for presidential hopeful, Ben Carson, the retired rock star neurologist, tends to debunk race as an issue. According to the latest polls, he is pushing neck and neck with Donald Trump. Both men espouse incredible bigotries, and seem to cater to the lowest common denominator of America’s dumbed-down segment of the population. Donald Trump has talked about building an actual wall to keep out immigrants from south of the border, not thinking about building one on the East coast, wherein a number of immigrants enter the US. Trump is making it popular to denigrate people based on their points of origin, and a lot of conservative Republicans are jumping on his bandwagon. He actually derided a fellow female Republican candidate’s looks. That kind of behavior stems straight from the halls of junior high school where immature young boys talk about girls. How ridiculous! This is far from presidential behavior! Ben Carson, the other frontrunner, an apparently brilliant neurosurgeon with an incredible lack of common sense, has made some ridiculous statements. Consider the following: “You know Obamacare is really I think the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery. And it is in a way, it is slavery in a way, because it is making all of us subservient to the government, and it was never about health care. It was about control.” He does not mention the fact that the more than 40 million people who did not have access to healthcare now have it. Also, incredibly, he compared people who voted for Obama to those who supported the Nazis during World War II: “There comes a time when people with values simply have to stand up. Think about Nazi Germany. Most of those people did not believe in what Hitler was doing. But did they speak up? Did they stand up for what they believe in? They did not, and you saw what happened.” Opposition to these ideas is not to say that people should all be in lock-step with the Democratic leadership, but there seems to be a disproportionate number of “conservative Republicans” who espouse things that will negatively impact the majority of non-wealthy people. And they seem to be mean-spirited. So, considering how conservative Republicans have largely been responsible for gridlock in Congress, the question can be asked “What are conservative Republicans trying to conserve?” According to Wikipedia, historian Gregory Schneider identifies several constants in American conservatism: respect for tradition, support of republicanism, “the rule of law and the Christian religion,” and a defense of “Western civilization from the challenges of modernist culture and totalitarian governments.” This sounds benign enough, until you consider the fact that chattel slavery, Jim Crow, and the maltreatment of Blacks have all been part of the conservative American tradition. In other words, many of the things that conservatives want to conserve are those very things that have been deleterious to the Black community. Because of this, Ben Carson and other Black conservative Republicans, need to consider this before hitching their horses to a wagon that just might take them where they do not want to go! And one of the most dangerous directions is connected to a disregard for, and denial of, climate change. That denial is probably, in some cases, fueled by the profit motive. After all, capital is king, and anything that threatens the bottom line, like additional environmental regulation, will be anathema to those of the conservative Republican ilk who value the dollar over human lives. I think this past week set a record for Black people showing how ignorant we can be when it comes to things outside of Chicago. From Rev. Al Sharpton’s radio show to nearly every corner of social media Black people were dissing Pope Francis and his visit to the U.S. The level of ignorance was just painful, as reflected by the caller to WVON radio who asked Sharpton “what did he come over here, to America, for anyway?” Others were saying the pope needed to do this and that for Black people in this country. They were clueless that this pope and all of his predecessors speak to the millions of Catholics around the world and not any specific ethnic group. Social media was full of “advice” on what Pope Francis needed to do on a number of issues, and it was obvious none of the advice was coming from practicing Catholics or anyone who had ever been involved with Catholicism. People had no idea of the history of the church or that it has existed longer than every Protestant church in Chicago combined It is hard to understand why people who know nothing about the role of the pope or the Catho-

A Major Blow to Women and Minority-Owned Businesses Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford (The following are excerpts from testimony I gave before the Civil Rights Commission explaining the discriminatory practices via an Executive Order placed by President Barack Obama). A Project Labor Agreement is between an owner of a specific construction project and applicable labor unions. It is an agreement that union rules must be followed from the beginning to end of the project. In essence it becomes very cumbersome for a non-union shop to participate. For instance, union wages must be paid to the nonunion shop plus the union level medical benefits and pension plan even though the money will never be credited to the non-union shop employees. Also, the non-union shops must pay union dues. Consequently, a Project Labor Agreement pretty much blocks the use of non-union shops and their employees. PLA’s are mainly used on local, state and federal projects as private corporations find them wasteful and too expensive. Ninety-eight percent of Black and Hispanic construction companies are non-union shops. Thus, a Project Labor Agreement greatly limits the opportunities for Black and Hispan-
Harry C. Alford ic firms whenever they are used. The possibility of Black and Hispanic labor is greatly suppressed also. There was a serious matter over the use of Project Labor Agreements when the Woodrow Wilson Bridge was about to be rebuilt. Maryland’s Gov. Glendenning demanded the use of a PLA while Virginia Gov. Gilmore insisted on no usage. Through research we compared the utilization of Black firms and employment on highway construction work for the states of Virginia and Maryland. Maryland had a state-wide PLA on its highway program while Virginia
was a Right to Work program. Virginia’s utilization of Black firms and employees was greater than Maryland by a 3:1 ratio. That caught the attention of President George W. Bush and he ordered no PLA on the bridge project. From there he eventually banned all PLA’s on federally funded projects as they “discriminate against women, minorities and small business.” Right after his inauguration President Barack Obama issued his first Executive Order (February 9, 2009). E.O. 13502 ordered all major federally funded projects to operate under a Project Labor Agreement. This is a major blow to women and minority owned businesses and employees. Diversity is negatively affected. If the U.S. Civil Rights Commission would do an audit on construction union employees they would find these construction crafts are in violation of Executive Order 11246. They are discriminatory. The US Department of Labor hides this by reporting racial employment by unions as a total number. They never report exclusively on construction unions by craft. If they did, it would uncover a disgrace. The NBCC has been trying to get these numbers beginning in 1997 but to no avail. Small business, which is 98% of Black construction firms, happens to be best developed in a Right to Work
environment. This has a direct impact on jobs and the sustainability of such firms. Section 3 of the HUD Act This is also known as The Economic Opportunities for Low and Very-Low Income Persons. 24 CFR part 135 was implemented by former HUD Secretary George Romney in 1968. It was a response to urban unrest in Black communities, especially the Watts Riot of 1965. The program was strengthened by Secretary Jack Kemp in 1992 as a result of the Rodney King Riot in Los Angeles. Under the law thirty percent (30%) of all jobs created by HUD money are to go to people living in public housing or living under the poverty level (Section 3 workers). Also, 10% of all contracts should go to firms hiring those Section workers. Section 3 activity is broad. Waste removal, painting, landscaping, accounting, janitorial, day care, construction, secretarial are some of the activities that can be applied to Section 3 opportunity. There are billions of dollars that apply to the Section 3 requirement annually. The goal is to use HUD funding to bring people into the workforce and out of poverty. If properly applied the need for HUD activity in our cities would start diminishing year by year. In 1998, the NBCC learned that
only 4 HUD grantees out of nearly 6,000 were complying with Section 3. Also, each grantee is to comply with annual activity reporting. Over 90% of these grantees were not even submitting their annual report. To the benefit of the current administration, the majority of grantees now take the time to submit an annual report. However, there are still no more than 4 grantees actually in compliance with Section 3. If the vast majority of grantees would comply, this nation would have over 100,000 new jobs for the unemployed per year and approximately $5 billion in contracts for new or small business owners. An example of the missed opportunity is the Chicago Housing Authority. It was discovered during a three year review (2008 – 2010) by HUD that the CHA received over $1 billion in HUD funding. Not once during those three years did CHA hire a Section 3 company or utilize a Section 3 resident. This is happening all over the nation. There is a lot of economic damage done via this noncompliance and HUD knows it – that is the tragedy. Mr. Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce®. Jeb Bush is wrong about Blacks wanting ‘Free Stuff ’ By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush thinks he can become president of the United States if Republicans can double their share of the Black vote in several key states. But he, like his GOP comrades, is demonstrating how not to accomplish that goal. Bush’s latest failure came last week when he continued a longtime Republican tradition of trying to portray African Americans as addicted to welfare and government handouts. He was speaking at the East Cooper Republican Women’s Club annual Shrimp Dinner in Mount Pleasant, S.C. According to the Washington Post, this is what happened: “Look around this room,” a man told Bush, who spoke to a mostly white crowd. “How many Black faces do you see? How are you going to include them and get them to vote for you?” asked the man, who was white. “Bush pointed to his record on school choice and said that if Republicans could double their share of the Black vote, they would win the swing states of Ohio and Virginia.” Then Bush uttered this clunker: “Our message is one of hope www.chicagocrusader.coM
George E. Curry and aspiration. It isn’t one of division and get in line and we’ll take care of you with free stuff. Our message is one that is uplifting – that says you can achieve earned success.” To paraphrase GOP icon Ronald Reagan, “There you Republicans go again.” In the 2012 presidential election, Mitt Romney, the Republican nominee, made an eerily similar remark at a Montana fundraiser. He said, “I want peo-
ple to know what I stand for and if I don’t stand for what they want, go vote for someone else, that’s just fine. But I hope people understand this, your friends who like Obamacare, you remind them of this, if they want more stuff from government tell them to go vote for the other guy – more free stuff.” Ronald Reagan framed the “free stuff ” in the form of welfare. He frequently lamented “welfare queens,” which was a way to indirectly exploit racial anxieties. Yet his son, Michael Reagan, had the temerity to argue two years into the Obama administration “…The past two years have made one thing clear: Ronald Reagan was a far better friend to Black Americans than Barack Obama has been.” In fact, as I wrote earlier in this space, Reagan was one of the nation’s worst presidents on civil rights. Among other things, he moved to invalidate voluntary affirmative action programs and school desegregation plans, vetoed the Civil Rights Restoration Act and tried to undermine the independence of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights by firing three of its members. Another Republican, Richard M. Nixon, railed against Blacks and Jews in a 1973 taped conver-

sation with his secretary, Rose Mary Woods. Nixon said, “Bill Rogers has got — to his credit it’s a decent feeling — but somewhat sort of a blind spot on the black thing because he’s been in New York,” Nixon said. “He says well, ‘They are coming along, and that after all they are going to strengthen our country in the end because they are strong physically and some of them are smart.’ So forth and so on. “My own view is I think he’s right if you’re talking in terms of 500 years,” he said. “I think it’s wrong if you’re talking in terms of 50 years. What has to happen is they have to be, frankly, inbred. And, you just, that’s the only thing that’s going to do it, Rose.” In a May 13, 1971 conversation with top aides John D. Ehrlichman and H. R. Haldeman, Nixon said: “We’re going to [put] more of these little Negro bastards on the welfare rolls at $2,400 a family— let people like [New York Sen.] Pat Moynihan ... believe in all that crap. But I don’t believe in it. Work, work—throw ‘em off the rolls. That’s the key ... I have the greatest affection for [blacks], but I know they’re not going to make it for 500 years. They aren’t. You know it, too. The Mexicans are a
different cup of tea. They have a heritage. At the present time they steal, they’re dishonest, but they do have some concept of family life. They don’t live like a bunch of dogs, which the Negroes do live like.” It’s not just the anti-Black sentiments expressed in words that are troubling about Republicans – it’s their actions as well. According to the NAACP legislative report card, no Republican in the House or Senate earned a grade above an “F” when voting on issues deemed important to African Americans. That’s far more damaging than the ignorant words that have been spouted for years. We’ll take positive action over “free stuff ” any day of the week. George E. Dr. Conrad Worrill The idea that Christopher Columbus discovered America on October 12, 1492 ha been thoroughly dis-
mantled by the African Centered and Indigenous Native Movements over the last forty year period. As Rosemary Richmond of the American Indian Community House in New York explains, “Columbus did not discover anything. A society 10,000 years old was here…America was not an unpopulated barren territory. It had rich civilizations and nations.” As a result of the defeat of the Columbus myth, African people in America have begun to focus on what was really happening during the time attributed to this 500-year old lie. What has emerged as a result of the defeat of this lie is a movement to acknowledge and commemorate the millions of African people who lost their lives through the chattel slave trade of the fifteenth, sixteenth, and seventeenth centuries. This movement is called the “African Holocaust of Enslavement” which we refer to as the “Maafa.” The term Maafa is a Ki Swahili word for disaster that we are now using to reclaim our right to tell our own story. Since 1992, in numerous cities throughout the African communities in America, during the period of what was once the Columbus Day events, programs have now been es-
tablished to pay reverence to our lost ancestors of the African Holocaust of Enslavement or Maafa. It must be made clear that, “No African was waiting as a slave to be traded to the Europeans. In all regions of Africa from which Africans were transported, the African was involved in a brutal war declared by the European aggressor, interested in exploiting the human and natural resources of the richest continent on earth.” In this context, “These Africans who became prisoners of war were placed in detention camps and then transported to the Americas to be enslaved by the benefactors of their captors. No African began his or her ordeal as a slave. Africans were reduced to slavery.” The national campaign to honor and pay tribute to our ancestors who were victims of the African Holocaust of Enslavement/Maafa, is focusing on: 1. Reconciliation of the historical reality of the ancestors with the historical memory of their descendants. 2. Healing the wounds between Africans in the Diaspora and continental Africa. 3. Enshrining of the ancestors who have struggled against the en-
slavement process. As our ancestor, the late Brother Hannibal Afrik observed, “Unfortunately for our race, these African victims have never had any commemorations or descent burials. To our African Ancestors, we have no monuments to attest for their suffering, nor have reconciled the past with the present.” Brother Afrik continues by pointing out, “As a people, we have never collectively performed the appropriate rituals to guide the souls of our departed ancestors to their proper resting places. Their bodies have rotted unceremoniously in the soils of Africa and in the cold watery graves of the Atlantic Ocean.” The African Holocaust of Enslavement Project explains that, “Between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries, at least fifty to one hundred million men, women, and children were captured, kidnapped, or brought from Africa by European slave traders to be sold into concentration labor camps of the Americas. These enslaved African prisons of war provided the labor in the mines and the plantation systems of the Americas to enrich the Europeans and provide the foundation for their current economic well being.”
Further, the Project makes these profound points: “The brutal genocidal war against African people resulted in the largest forced transportation of any group of people in the history of mankind. The loss of life from this process is immeasurable, but estimates put it at least around one hundred million over the four hundred years of the African Holocaust (1441-1898).” As a part of the process of recapturing the African mind and spirit, it is imperative that we pay homage to our ancestors of the African Holocaust/Maafa by taking time out every year in an organized and programmatic way be acknowledging their spirits. Over the last several years this campaign has begun to get the attention of large numbers of African people who have become inspired by participating in the African Holocaust/Maafa programs. All African people should get spiritually prepared to participate in this year’s African Holocaust/Maafa Programs. By actively participating, your soul will connect with our ancestors and help in the continued effort to give honor and respect to them. We must, “Let the Healing Begin With Us!”
A Compassionate Pope? By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist Pope Francis’ visit to Cuba and the United States has been an auspicious occasion. As this is being written mid-visit, the Pope has begun his trip in Washington, DC. It is amazing to see the crowds that throng around the White House and the Vatican Embassy for just a glimpse of the Pope. Early this morning, I spotted swarms of young people headed to the White House, white balloons in hand, with hopes of only being in the Pope’s presence. People seem to love this Pope because of his humility and compassion. He has said that women who use birth control or have had abortions can be “forgiven” and return to full participation in church culture. He has stressed that people should love their LGBT neighbors. He has lifted up the poor and been an advocate for climate change. A self-identified immigrant, he has asked for compassion for immigrant peoples. While he has not retreated from entrenched Catholic theology, he has offered a compassion that may return lapsed Catholics to the church. 6
One of the tasks the Pope has taken on, however is to canonize Junipero Serra, the Franciscan friar who established Spanish missions throughout California. He had direct involvement in the establishment of at least nine of the twentyone missions. Junipero Serra is hailed by many, and was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1988. Beatification is the last step before sainthood, and canonizing Junipero Serra on US soil may be important. At the same time, it is fair to ask what kind of man the compassionate Pope Francis is canonizing and whether Junipero Serra’s sainthood is a celebration for some and a curse for others. In order to establish Spanish missions in California, Junipero Serra had to “Christianize” the Native American population. On one hand, Junipero Serra protected native women, “saving” them from Spanish troops by locking them up at night. On the other hand, it is documented that Junipero Serra condoned, and even imposed, brutality to native people. Native Americans were enslaved, whipped and flogged. They were forced into labor and they were severely abused. Their culture was suppressed. And though

Dr. Julianne Malveaux Junipero Serra was perceived to want Native Americans to be treated fairly, he also adhered to the belief that Native American people were inferior to Europeans. From his compassionate base, and in this trip through the Americas, Pope Francis has acknowledged sins against the indigenous populations when he travelled to Bolivia earlier this year. Why, then, would he canonize a man who committed far too many sins against the Native American people in California? Does the Pope accept the notion that Catholi-
cism must go hand-in-hand with colonialization? Does he accept the oppression that came with the “saving of souls?” Native American activists and others who believe in freedom are absolutely right to raise questions about the mixed messages this supposedly progressive Pope is putting out there. Can a “saint” enthusiastically participate in the decimation of a culture and still be deified? Some will say that Junipero Serra should be viewed in context, but that is tantamount to saying that it is okay to revere the leaders of the slave-loving (and Black-inferiority embracing) Confederacy. While this Latin American-born Pope may find some regional fealty with Junipero Serra, why would a man who eschews oppression choose to lift up an oppressor? Let me inject my personal history here. I was raised Catholic, was baptized, received Communion, and attended weekly masses until I was in my early teens. Then my political education revealed that Catholics were the colonizers of Africa, Latin America, Mexico and California. Understanding the role the church played in the oppression of Black people, I told my mom that I would

never go to church again (not). I attended Boston College, a Jesuit college, but never missed an opportunity to talk about Catholic oppression and colonialism. Today, I mostly attend mass when I am at home in San Francisco and hanging with my mom. Only because my brain is warped do I look at chalices and wonder how many people had to be sold to produce the jewel-studded chalices, or how many offerings had to be diverted to the victims of sexual predators. Tens of thousands of Catholics and others will come together to celebrate Pope Francis, as they must. If these Catholics embraced the expressed spirit of Pope Francis, though, they’d rail against the canonization of Junipero Serra, a savage oppressor. Even as I appreciate the context of the 18th century work of Junipero Serra, I am not sure this work should be lauded. Pope Francis, the compassionate Catholic, has expressed scant sympathy for the Native American people Junipero Serra oppressed. I am not surprised, but disappointed, by the hypocrisy. I just had to take a few days to get myself ready for the long haul, so I decided to go to a “SPA” and let dem folks jiggle a few things around an I’se much better now. Thanks to all who missed me and called and writ to the paper asking if I was gone for good. So while I was gone I noticed that not much changed, there was still all of those drive bys and such that makes us all feel bad. To the latest drive by that killed a mother and grandmother and hitting a baby you need to put your gun up ‘cause you can’t tell Ima you was aiming at the baby. That means you
don’t know how to shoot fool!! You can’t tell me that the baby did something to you. Judges earn honors from President Obama and Illinois Judicial Council The Illinois Fourth District Circuit Court of Cook County Associate Judge Stanley L. Hill was among nine judges honored by President Barack Obama with The President’s Volunteer Service Award and by the Illinois Judicial Council (IJC) with its Extraordinary Service to The Community Award at the IJC’s 33rd Installation and Awards Ceremony at the Hyatt Regency Chicago on Friday, September 25, 2015. Each of the nine judges that received the President’s Volunteer Service Award was given a certificate, commemorative pin, and a personalized letter signed by President Barack Obama, one of which was read aloud by the Rev. Dr. Alvin Love, pastor of Lilydale First Baptist Church in Chicago. The judges included the Hon. Andrea M. Buford, Hon. Shelvin L. Hall, Hon. Stanley L. Hill, Hon. William H. Hooks, Hon. Sharon O. Johnson, Hon. Leonard Murray, Hon. P. Scott Neville, Jr., Hon. Dominique C. Ross and Hon. Cybil C. Thomas. The Hon. Judge William H. Hooks, who served as the IJC chair during the 2014-2015 year, presented awards in six categories, as well as welcomed the 2015-2016 new Illinois Judicial Council Chair, the Hon. Judge Dominique C. Ross during the installation ceremony. The chairperson for the dinner was the Hon. Drella C. Savage, retired. The two awards given to Judge Hill were in recognition of his outstanding commitment to the community and the country by producing the Push For Excellence Inspirational Speech Awards in collaboration with Illinois Judicial Council and the Original Forty Club of Chicago; Louisiana Leadership Institute and Southern University Law Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and JJ’s Freedom Center and Miles College in Birmingham/Fairfield, Alabama. found speeches from historic and current leaders. The National 2014/2015 rhetorical contests were held simultaneously in Baton Rouge, Birmingham and Chicago. In each of these cities a combined total number of 130 contestants divided into four levels: level one, grades 1 through 3; level two, grades 4 through 6; level three, grades 7 and 8; and level four, grades 9 through 12 competed for first ($100), second ($75), third ($50) and honorable mention ($10) awards. In addition participants received $20 gift cards and an I-Pad, courtesy of NFL Alumni Donnell Woolford, former member of the Chicago Bears. And as a special treat for the Chicago contestants, Roy B. Sartin, co-founder of Leave No Veteran Behind donated bicycles to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. Judges for the contests included actual sitting judges, educators, church pastors and business executives. A Level 2 winner Rian Baker, a 5th grade student at Disney Magnet School, said that she chose to recite the speech by Langston Hughes, “Let America be America Again.” “I knew I needed to really believe in the speech I was saying. Once I started memorizing it, I said ‘this is the one,’ she recalled. I had to speak to the people about trying to get their freedom, so I had to really understand the speech. I just said it over and over again until I had it memorized.” A Level 3 winner Rebecca Reid, an 8th grade student at Southerland Elementary School, said she selected the speech, “The Girl Who Silenced the United Nations for Five Minutes.” “The speech really spoke to me because it had a really powerful message about how adults are acting really hypocritical in going out and destroying the world and killing up all the animals and polluting the environment,” she said. “The girl who gave that speech to the U.N. was only 13 years old. I said, ‘If she can do it. I’m 14, I can do it.’ I started memorizing it awhile back because it’s really a long speech.”

Judge Hill decided to produce the speech awards to focus young people on the power of eloquent persuasive speech. He said, “The speeches selected have the enormous power to inspire us to always make us try a little harder, risk a little more, and gain wisdom and power for our life. Disseminating an inspiring “succeedingagainst-the-odds message” that will live “through every line of pain and glory” the speeches increase our capacity to be happy and to treat other people with respect, kindness and goodwill, and to pursue rich positive relationships and avoid destructive ones.” According to Judge Hill, “Our children may not remember their speech as time goes on, but the confidence and skills they gain just by participating will never leave them.

CPS cuts to Special Education programs delayed (Continued from page 1) back in their fight to save a school district that’s mired in debt. Last Friday, the District announced that 260 schools would lose $36 million because of low enrollment while 243 schools will get $23 million. After its 10th day enrollment count, the District said 367,499 students were enrolled in CPS schools this year. Recently, Claypool said CPS will send out layoff notices by Thanksgiving if the state doesn’t bailout the District by approving $480 million in funds from the state lawmakers. During the summer
CPS approved their annual budget, hoping that Illinois lawmakers would later cover the $480 million shortfall. It’s uncertain whether that will happen. Republican Governor Bruce Rauner is at odds with a proposed bill that includes a twoyear freeze on local property taxes and paying out $200 million for CPS’s pensions. In addition to a property tax freeze, Rauner’s plan includes limiting collective bargaining rights and repeal wage laws- goals that are at odds with the Chicago Teachers Union. CPS is currently in contract talks with the CTU.

Black America’s mortgage dilemma Private market fails its duty to serve By Charlene Crowell Financial security can often feel like a tug of war with earnings and income on one side and the cost of living and debt on the other. Which side wins can determine whether a household is mired in insurmountable debt or gains the financial ability for a better life. For many families, the path to that better life is through homeownership. If you’re Black or Latino, however, wanting and getting are often two different things. In 2014, borrowers of color and families with low-to-moderate incomes continue to be shortchanged in the mortgage market, according to the newly-released Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA) report. One of the few reports that tracks data by race and income, the HMDA report tallies how many mortgage loans were approved, as well as what kinds of mortgage they are. To put it another way, the HMDA numbers reveal whether Black America is getting its fair share of mortgages. In 2014, the numbers show that communities of color
got a lot less: Out of 1,736,000 conventional mortgage loans for purchases last year, Black borrowers received only 45,544; Latino borrowers fared better, receiving 87,570. Only 2.6 percent of these loans, typically the most affordable and widely available, were made to Blacks and just 5.0 percent for Latinos. The more costly governmentbacked loan programs such as FHA, VA and USDA were the primary mortgage vehicles for consumers of color. For Blacks, 96,780 home loans (9.7 percent of all government-sponsored loans) were made, and again, Latinos received slightly more with 128,653 (12.9 percent) of these loans. “These stark disparities in mortgage lending to borrowers of color and low-wealth families occur to the very people hardest hit by abusive lending and the foreclosure crisis. These disparities also come at a time when our nation’s demographics are changing,” said Nikitra Bailey, executive vice president with the Center for Respon-

tine credit and high levels of wealth. Homeownership must be available to all credit-worthy consumers so they can pursue their own American Dream”. An in-depth analysis of 2014 HMDA data is available on CRL’s web. Among mortgage professionals, it is widely held that owning a home is how many Americans build wealth. As the private mortgage market has failed to make loans available to Black homebuyers, our community suffers from a limited ability to create wealth through this reliable and proven method. Demos, a public policy organization, published a report that demonstrated if the rate of homeownership by people of color would increase, the racial wealth gap would substantially reduce the racial wealth gap. “Black and Latino homeowners saw less return in wealth on their investment in homeownership: for every $1 in wealth that accrues to median Black households as a result of homeownership, median white households accrue $1.34,” states
the report. Housing is critical to the health of our national economy. Excluding credit-worthy families from fully participating fully in the entire housing marketplace, hinders the market’s ability to continue its steady improvement. This exclusion also systematically limits the total number of potential homebuyers. As America’s retirees grow older, many will seek to downsize. Expanding the pool of homebuyers looking for their first home can help first-time buyers access a greater number of options. Between historically and broadly available low mortgage interest rates, coupled with strengthened consumer protections, today’s lending climate is better able to create safe and successful lending for consumers and lenders alike. Kids, fathers, mothers, doctors and supporters who all have a vested interest in telling the story of kids’ battles with cancer bring the video to life. Chicago leaders visited local schools to encourage Black students to aim high By Erick Johnson It was time for a history lesson. Dozens of fourth grade students at the University of Chicago‘s George Donoghue Charter School in Bronzeville were ready for the challenge. “Who can tell me the name of this famous person,“ asked Robert Starks, pointing to one of many pictures on the front page of the Chicago Crusader, the weekly Black newspaper that’s been around for 75 years. “He’s Mayor Harold Washington,” shouted one fourth-grade student, referring to Chicago’s first Black mayor. “What character does he play?” asked one male student. The fourth and fifth-grade Black students were among millions of youth who on Friday, September 24, received a visit from hundreds of
influential Black leaders, who visited schools across the city to encourage tomorrow’s leaders to strive for academic excellence. The annual event was sponsored by the HistoryMakers, a national Chicago-based organization that houses the country’s largest Black archives. At the George Donoghue Charter School, the HistoryMakers brought in a history teller, Dorothy R. Leavell, publisher and editor of the Chicago Crusader, who urged the students to dream big despite ongoing shootings in the city’s neighborhoods. She joined Starks, another prominent Black leader who has taught at the Institute for Inner City Studies for 40 years. The two were among dozens of Chicago Black professionals who flooded the classrooms just three weeks after the new school year began. They were led by U.S. Secre-
tary of Education Arne Duncan, who kicked off the day’s event with a visit to Paul Robeson High School on the city’s South Side. For Duncan, the event was a homecoming. Before he became the nation’s highest education secretary, Duncan, a Chicago native, headed the city’s public school district, the nation’s third largest. While his visit was a trip down memory lane, it was also a refreshing escape from Washington, where he is embroiled in a tug of war with conservatives in Congress, who want to strip Duncan of his influence and federal involvement on education in local communities. They claim Duncan’s policies have weakened local districts’ ability to decide what’s best for their schools. But with school districts like Chicago in trouble, Duncan has stood his ground. Sc High School, he encouraged hundreds of students, whose school lost several staff members due to $554,000 in budget cuts this year. At Paul Robeson High School, an institution named after the famous entertainer who performed in the hit Broadway musical Showboat, Duncan spurred on the students to academic achievement along with the HistoryMaker’s Executive Director Julieanna Richardson, Advertising and Communications tycoon Thomas J. Burrell and longtime WLS Channel 7 Anchor Cheryl Burton. They were among some 400 Black leaders nationwide to go “back to school” in 67 cities and 32 states. At the George Donoghue Charter School, Starks and Leavell visited a fourth and fifth grade classroom. Although a charter school, it is struggling academically and a majority of the students are from lowincome families. But during both visits, the students surprised several adults in the room as they drilled the leaders with questions about life and current events. The meeting with fifth-grade students gave the leaders a sober look at the reality of gun-violence on the city’s gritty streets on the South Side.

Students spoke about their experience in witnessing shootings and other violent crimes in their neighborhoods. But Leavell reminded the students that they could be the solution to the city’s social ills. “We’ve got to be vigilant and responsible,” she told them. “You have to let someone know to prevent a lot of this stuff from happening.” The students also pressed this reporter with questions about a recent story about the late Nancy Green, known as the original Aunt Jemima character. Her unmarked grave was discovered nearly 100 years after her burial at Oak Woods Cemetery in Woodlawn. Inside the fourth-grade classroom, many students asked Leavell for her autograph while some told Starks their college and career ambitions. Several wanted to attend Yale University’s renowned School of Drama to become actors and actresses. Another one wanted to go to Harvard University because President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle received their law degrees from there. Another student wanted to be a school principal. “You can do anything you want as long as you get an education,” Starks said.

HistoryMaker visits Saint Sabina Academy By Chinta Strausberg Saint Sabina Academy students gave Chicago author Angela Jackson a standing ovation Thursday when she gave an inspirational HistoryMakers speech where she challenged the students to commit to completing an education. Jackson, the author of numerous poems, plays and short stories, lives in Chicago but was born in Greenville, Mississippi on July 25, 1951. She is a graduate of Northwestern University’s College of Arts and Sciences in 1977. She was inspired to write by then visiting Northwestern professor Margaret Walker, a Mississippi writer. Helen Dumas, the principal of Saint Sabina Academy, told her students that Black leaders from around the nation are telling students about the importance of making a commitment to their education. After student Ices Perez read 2 Timothy 2:15, Dumas played a short video about the HistoryMakers school program. As part of the 6th annual “Back to
School” with the HistoryMakers organization, Jackson asked the students to study hard and enjoy learning about different things. “When I was in first grade, I fell in love with words,” she said. “When I came home to my house, I found more words because in our house there were lots of books,” Jackson said. Jackson said her entire family liked to read, including one of her brothers who read the encyclopedia “from A to Z.” Every Saturday, they would walk to the library at 60th and Normal and get a stack of books. “I was destined to be a writer,” Jackson said. “Words are what’s happening,” said Jackson. “Words can make a difference.” When she asked students if they knew Pulitzer-Prize winner Gwendolyn Brooks, Jackson was disappointed that every hand didn’t go up. Jackson lived a block from the late Brooks and is currently friends with Brook’s sister. She said words matter. “Nobody words knows words like me because nobody knows in me.
There’s only one me, and there is only one you,” she said pointing to the students. She called them “unique,” “one of a kind,” and “a gift to the world.” Dumas gave her a bag full of gifts and thanked her for visiting Saint Sabina Academy. The students then recited the Back To School with the HistoryMakers Pledge: “Today, I COMMIT to my education. I do so realizing that a lot is expected of me. I do so knowing that I will have to study and work hard. I do so wanting to avoid anyone and anything that will tempt me not to succeed. I do so in respect and honor of the HistoryMakers who have paved a way for me. I do so because I want to be the best that I can be. Today, I commit to my future based on knowledge of the past. Sanders and Lewis then followed up with “M.E.,” EP on Trax and a fourth release as “Ace & The Sandman” on Trax subsidiary Saber Records. late comedian’s life. In a live theatre production, James Murray Jackson, Jr. is playing Pryor in a play called “Unspeakable,” which is coming to the Broadway Playhouse at the Water Tower, 175 E. Chestnut St., beginning October 6. Pryor died nearly 10 years ago at the age of 65, and “Unspeakable” is an unflinching ride through the emotional landscape of Pryor’s life spanning 61 years and focused on the period between 1967 and 1982. Born and raised in a Peoria brothel owned and operated by his grandmother, Pryor faced situations that forever shaped and scarred his sensitive soul. With a pimp for a father and his mother a whore, young Pryor’s imagination helps him escape and ultimately leads him to comedy. “Unspeakable” captures the energy of a man battling success and the demons it invites. Pryor’s star rose to high esteem with jokes focusing on race and politics, but some will forever remember him because of the tragic 1980 explosion and fire that nearly consumed his body and life, after Pryor was reportedly freebasing cocaine. Pryor denied these accusations, and whether it was an accident or suspected suicide attempt, Pryor later worked the incident into his comedy routine and most

A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe Do you remember…? What a great feeling of accomplishment it will be to one day reflect over your life and have memories of a life fulfilled. What amazing joy and sigh of relief to truly know that you have given your all and lived your best life possible. When I think of memories— there are two categories that come to mind—remembering what we did and what we failed to do. My hope is to look back on what was done, even if it was a mistake. I believe that it’s better to make a mistake doing something that turns out to be wrong rather than looking back and wondering what might have been. It’s time to trade in your coulda’, shoulda’ and woulda’ mentality, which often leads to a life of regret. It’s time to change that tune to ‘I just did it!’ Life is full of good and bad memories—we can all stand some improvement. So why not work on improving your memories. You have got to give it all you’ve got, for tomorrow isn’t promised. As we are graced to
Effie Rolfe mature, for some, there are more memories behind us than before us. So be selective and make the rest of them count. Enjoy life. Remember that life is made of moments. Unfortunately, there are going to be bumps and potholes on your journey, but keep moving with a smile. In every breath you take and every move you make there is a gift from God, as

When life is over—that’s it. “Whatever your hand finds to do—do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.” (Ecclesiastes 9:10) The message is unequivocally clear—whatever God has blessed you to do…do it now. Don’t wait. Tomorrow is not promised. But, what if you missed the cue concerning your life or destiny? Unlike a stage play, failing to execute the next step regarding your destiny could be critical and result in wasted time. It’s almost similar to when you drive on the highway and miss your exit. You may have to go 50 miles until you get to the next one. This could take at least 2 hours out of your day and cause your schedule to be totally off track. Again, a production and highway exit is nothing compared to your life. Since you’re only here for a moment and then gone—it’s imperative that you begin to pay attention and listen to directions. stop—look and listen to the voice of God. He generally speaks through a gentle nudging—tugging, which is a still small voice commonly referred to as your intuition. It’s crucial to have quiet time and then focus and wait to hear your next cue. The scripture says to “be still and hear the salvation of the Lord.” God’s desire for everyone is to have salvation, which means preservation, deliverance and protection. Thank God we don’t have to wait for anyone to give us a cue because it is as close as your next breath— within. Although grateful for the memories, unfortunately, too many people are not aware that they are alive in the world. So our memory is vital and a true gift. Please take a minute to think about what you are thinking. The scripture is clear “as a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” (Proverbs 23:7) Your thoughts will produce your habits, your habits will produce actions and ultimately your actions will produce life’s experiences that will result in your desired or undesired memories. So I ask ‘how is your thinking? When
you arrive at the end of your life’s journey, will your thoughts produce your desired memories? In closing, as we mature, you really do play a major role on how your memories will impact or impede your life. If you don’t like the memories that you currently hold, it’s up to you to change them. Make some new and better deposits that fill your memory bank and pay you greater dividends. “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” (Philippians 4:8) Today is a good day—only you can make it better. Gospel great Calvin Bridges rocked Captain Hard Times Organizers seek to save Black eatery on 79th St. By Chinta Strausberg Josephine’s Cooking Restaurant, aka Captain Hard Times, rocked 79th Street Sunday as hundreds of people attended her second anniversary Stepper’s Gospel brunch, featuring the acclaimed and internationally known Calvin Bridges. People were dancing by the stage, in the aisles and at their tables, as Bridges belted out one hit song after another. In an effort to help save a Blackowned restaurant, owned by Josephine Wade and her son, Victor Love, the event was organized by George Smith aka King George and promoter Cliff Pierce. They are planning a Stepper’s Gospel all you can eat brunch every fourth Sunday at the restaurant located at 436 E. 79th St. Saying he chose Josephine’s to hold the brunch because several Black-owned restaurants have closed, coupled with the fact that he grew up in the neighborhood. After meeting Wade and Love, Smith said he wanted to bring his brunch back to the city. But, it is also a way to help sustain one of the few Black-owned soul food restaurants in Chicago. “When I grew up there were Black businesses everywhere, and
Calvin Bridges my thing is to bring stuff back to the community. I don’t want to take it to the suburbs or downtown. I want it to be like the time I grew up.” Wade called the Stepper’s Gospel brunch “spectacular. I am appalled at African American restaurants, businesses and retail because we don’t do services and goods where we sleep and among ourselves. We support every ethnic group other than our own, and we just have a dying community right now and I do not think it has anything to do with crime,” she said. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (Cont’d from page 4) Preckwinkle appears more than willing to pass the buck to our gridlocked state government when it comes to the issue of gun violence. The year 2015 has seen dramatically escalating levels of gun deaths in Chicago and Cook County. The death toll continues to climb steadily and the price is steep. The estimated yearly cost to our local economy is roughly $2.5 billion. And despite their comprising only 25% per cent of the City of Chicago’s population, the Cook County Medical Examiner reports that 80% of those killed by gunshot wounds in Chicago in 2015 are African American. This is a disaster unfolding in real time. It is no exaggeration to say that people are dying nearly every day from gunshot wounds in Cook County. As County Commissioner for the 1st District, which includes many of the neighborhoods where the levels of gun violence are highest, I have spent the summer proposing and working to advance a critically important policy designed to confront gun violence head-on- the appoint14
ment of a Gun Violence Czar to coordinate law enforcement, public health, judicial and economic policy among different units of government for the single, express purpose of halting these murders. Thus far the President’s office has declined to support the appointment of a Gun Czar. This despite the fact that County jails, County hospitals, and our County Circuit Courts are suffering disproportionate costs as the result of the violence. The President points to the work of her Justice Advisory Council (JAC), which distributes “Violence Prevention” grants to nonprofits that participate in a competitive application process. But this past summer, the JAC awarded $800,000.00 in “Violence Prevention” grants and none of that money went to the areas where the levels of violence are highest. Not a penny went to Austin, for example, which leads all 77 Chicago neighborhoods in shooting deaths. Furthermore, by any objective measure, the Preckwinkle administration’s efforts to

curb violence have failed. Whatever the level of investment, the problem has only worsened, and it continues to worsen at an alarming rate. Gun Violence Czar Now, with the problem having grown too large to ignore, President Preckwinkle has decided to wade into the debate with a policy prescription that is a passive response to an aggressive crisis. In contrast to her frantic rhetoric around the sales tax increase, President Preckwinkle now wants Cook County to wait for Springfield. In an editorial in this week’s Sun-Times, Preckwinkle cited $70 million of Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) funds that the State of Illinois expects to receive next year. Calling the money “manna from heaven,” the President implies, without stating specifics, that this money can be used to address the scourge of gun violence that has ravaged Cook County’s poorest and most vulnerable communities. Sitting on our hands while state officials, who are cur-
rently unable to produce a budget, determine what to do next year with funds from Washington, D.C., is not a solution to a public safety emergency. President Preckwinkle argued in July that the county must act swiftly, on its own, to avoid a fiscal doomsday. Now the county faces an actual doomsday, where action is required not just to save money, but to save lives. In the face of these genuinely dire circumstances, the President seems oddly content to let Springfield take the wheel. As the President reminded us while pressing us to adopt her sales tax hike, Cook County must be the Master of Its Own Destiny. It is time that the communities imperiled by gun violence pose a direct question to the Preckwinkle Administration: Why wait for “manna from heaven” when we know that God helps those who help themselves?

They would lead an afternoon of pomp and pageantry amid Chicago’s breathtaking skyline and usher in another historic clash between two great Black colleges under balmy skies in the 18th Annual Chicago football Classic on Saturday, September 26. But first, Rich Central put the moves on the competition in an epic battle of high school bands, with a show-stopping performance of a song from the hit Fox Show “Empire.” Then, the Morgan State University Bears displayed some moves of their own at Soldier Field as they pummeled the Howard University Bison in a game that at times had as much muscle as Julius Caesar’s military conquests. The game capped a weekend of tradition and fun as thousands of fans turned out to participate in an annual fall tradition between two Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). The classic matchup lived up to its hype as top high school and college bands dueled for bragging rights at this year’s battle of the bands. Howard University did not go home empty handed. The school earned the tropy after winning the coveted Battle of the Bands competition during halftime. Howard University won the coveted Battle of the Bands college competition during halftime. Here Howard put together a rousing, entertaining spectacle that perhaps made many forget about the football game. The trophy perhaps provided Howard some consolation after their loss to Morgan State for the second straight year. The Bears’ Orlando Johnson gave Morgan State an early lead with a touchdown run in the first quarter. From the start, the game was shaping up to be a blowout until Howard’s Craig Johnson capitalized on a fumble and closed the gap to 21-7 by halftime. Despite giving up two field goals in the second half while remaining scoreless, the Bears still won the game and reaffirmed their sovereignty over Howard. Last year, the Bears defeated the Bison 38-35 in the New York Urban League Classic at Met Life Stadium. Before the game, spectators were treated to the annual Battle of the High School bands competition on the Great Lawn across from Soldier Field, where the brass of trumpets and tubas glistened and sparkled under sunny skies. Here, King College Prep gave a strong performance off the hit song “Perculator.” And spectators cheered as they watched Proviso West High School from Hillside, IL do the “Whip” and “Nae Nae,” a national dance craze started by the young hip hop artist Silento. Rich Central High School once again displayed its depth and stunning versatility with crisp choreography. Along with songs from Michael Jackson and Boys II Men’s classic “Motown Philly,” they sealed their title hopes as they danced and performed the hip hop hit from the “Empire” show “You’re Beautiful.” Viewers can watch their winning performance on YouTube. As part of the Chicago Football Classic, MillerCoors gave $10,000 donations to Morgan State and Howard University.
