McCarthy still silent on Rekia Boyd Distrust deepens amid calls for chief ’s termination Chicago Crusader staff report Nearly one month after a police review panel recommended terminating a cop who killed Rekia Boyd, Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy remains silent about the issue, despite several requests from the Chicago Crusader. The recommendation has raised doubts about whether McCarthy is willing to sweep out bad cops on his police force. The issue is one of several concerns that have created distrust in the Black community. McCarthy’s problems grew on Monday, October 5 when Black political leaders banded together and called for his resigna-

tion. (See story on page 2). At his department budget hearing at City Hall on Tuesday, McCarthy was on the hot seat as Black aldermen spoke out on lingering concerns ranging from diversity to the numerous shootings in Chicago’s neighborhoods. For over two years, McCarthy has been under fire for his support of Dante Servin, a Chicago police officer who killed Boyd three years ago after firing five shots in a crowd in an alley in March 2012. Since the shooting, McCarthy has defended Servin, saying the officer should never have been charged with a crime in the first place. On September 16, the Independent PoHarryMcCarthy C. Alford Garry lice Review Authority (IPRA), which investigates controversial police shootings, rec- failed to sufficiently perform his duties as a ommended that Servin be fired after he police officer.

Since the ruling, Servin’s fate has been in the hands of the top cop. But nearly four weeks after the IPRA decision, loved ones and Black leaders are still waiting to see whether McCarthy will follow through the panel’s recommendation. Major media organizations in Chicago agreed that Servin should be fired for his actions. The Crusader has reached out to the Chicago Police media information department, which has not responded to two emails about McCarthy’s impending decision. As McCarthy comes under fire, Mayor Rahm Emanuel has voiced his support of the chief he hired from Newark, NJ in 2011. In a press statement from the mayor’s of(Continued on page 7)

It was called the Million Man March, an event that drew hundreds of thousands of Black men from all corners of the American landscape. It was held on October 16, 1995 on and around the National Mall in Washington, D.C., the same real estate

where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. For an entire week leading up to the march, Farrakhan and some of the nation’s most prominent Black leaders would shine an ugly spotlight on the economic and social injustices of a political establishment that is still being blamed for the ever-growing gap between the rich and poor. Chicago’s Black Caucus wants McCarthy to resign By Chinta Strausberg Saying they are not going to back down, City Council Chairman Alderman Roderick Sawyer Wednesday said the Black Caucus stands by its demand that Police Supterintendent Garry McCarthy resign, but it’s also time for the community to “stand up, speak out” and let their wishes be known. Putting the heat on the mayor, in an interview with this reporter, Sawyer said, “We will continue to meet to determine how we are going to get our message across, but we are calling on the community to stand up and tell us how they feel about McCarthy. We want to know how far we need to go for this. We are not backing down. I need to take the pulse of the community to see what they say.” Reminded that McCarthy has publicly said he is not going to resign because he has much work to do, Sawyer said, “Yes, he has the support of the mayor. That is his right, but we want to hear from the people. We all want safer streets, more effective policing and that is what it boils down to.” Ald. Howard Brookins (21st), the former chair of the City Council Black Caucus, isn’t surprised by the mayor’s refusal to fire the top cop. “The mayor is standing by his man and holding firm, but if there is enough community pressure, that could possibly change,” said Brookins who has a problem with the top cop’s policing strategies.

Brookins asked the community to call the mayor’s office at 312.744.3300 and/or write letters to Mayor Rahm Emanuel, 121 North LaSalle, 5th Floor, Chicago, Il 60602. City Council Budget Chairman Ald. Carrie Austin (34th), along with several members of the Black Caucus hammered away at the top cop Tuesday for nearly sixhours with Ald. Anthony Beale (9th) telling him he didn’t know everything and that he ought to listen to the aldermen. Monday, Sawyer called a press conference where most of the Black Caucus called for McCarthy’s resignation. It was an unprecedented show of unity on a very emotional issue—increased violence and homicides mostly in the Black and Latino communities. Joining Sawyer were Austin, Jason Irwin (28th), Anthony Beale (9th), Ald. Leslie Hairston (5th), Michelle Harris (8th), Emma Mitts (37th), David Moore (17th), Willie Cochran (20th) and others like Pat Dowell (3rd), who is dealing with the shooting at a park in the Fuller Park community, where five people were shot, two died. The aldermen were especially reacting to the two recent backto-back weekends of 50 shootings and several homicides that had not been seen in Chicago in 13years. While police statistics showing that murders are up by 21 percent this year, homicides have reportedly increased by 14 percent since

Complaints grow for Alderman Will Burns (Continued from page 1) input from the entire community before making a decision. They asked him why he moved forward in rescinding permit parking last month without their input? He never answered that question, but Burns did say: “I’d like for CDOT to come out and do a comprehensive parking study for the area and give me recommendations on how to move forward,” Burns said. “There may be some things we can do around the edges to increase parking availability. But permit parking in and of itself is frequently not a solution to the problem.” Burns said those measures could include, shortening tow zones, time specific restrictive parking or other measures. Burns cited an August 2014 evaluation by the Department of Finance that recommended against giving permit parking to residents in the 3400 block of south Giles as a basis for him revoking two permit parking zones on that block last month. That recommendation was ignored by for2

mer Alderman Bob Fioretti who approved the measure anyway. Fioretti told the Crusader this summer he went against the CDOT recommendation because he thought it was wrong and any alderman has a right to go against a recommendation. As far as Burns’ response, residents concluded that no matter what the CDOT study says or how much they ask, he is not going to sign off on permit parking because he is against it philosophically. The residents said Burns couldn’t make a decision purely from the CDOT study without including their input. They say the 4th Ward is constantly evolving with newly-built homes and businesses that draw more people and traffic. While construction is inevitable, residents agree that change is necessary. The 4th Ward now includes parts of the former 2nd Ward after the maps were redrawn earlier this year. “It does us no good to go through the process of getting the permit parking if you are just going to rescind it or deny our petition for it because it is against your philosophy,” shouted one man from the rear of the room

before storming out and leaving. Residents in the 3100 block of south Prairie and Calumet next to Dunbar Park are particularly troubled by what they are seeing outside their windows. They told Burns people having sex in parked cars on the street and in the alleys have become too common. They also complained about cleaning up drug paraphernalia and alcohol bottles in the morning. They say people are parking their vehicles on their block and walking

over to the 31st Street Beach to avoid the parking meters that the city installed at the beach parking lots three years ago. Burns suggested they call police and report the behavior. But residents told him when they do, the police come and people get in their cars and just sit there because it is not illegal to sit in a parked car with legal tags, so there is nothing the police can do. “This is a reason we need the permit parking that we are asking you for,” said a man who identified himself at D. Lang. Several meeting attendees told the Crusader their parking problems have been exacerbated in the past two years with the expansion of off-campus housing for Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) students and the building of new homes in the area. They say the IIT students often park on their block for days and walk to class in an effort to offset the costs of on-campus parking. They also said during Christmas and Spring break at the school it is common for students to just leave their cars and go out of town. They also say people who work

downtown come in the morning and park on the block before boarding the #4 Cottage Grove or #3 King Drive bus and head downtown. Drivers return to their vehicles in the evening, but take up all of the parking spaces during the day. Residents compared their situation of dealing with the IIT students to what happens in the Lincoln Park community on the North Side next to DePaul University. They say in the neighborhoods bordering DePaul, there is permit parking for residents. With DePaul in the process of building a new athletic arena that will also be in Burns’ ward, they say the parking problems are not going away anytime soon and the alderman needs to have a vision and not live in the past. “I see permit parking all around the residential areas around McCormick place and that is just a few blocks from here,” said Andre Alexander of the 3100 block of south Giles. “I see them with don’t walk your dogs signs, pick up your trash signs and we can’t get simple permit parking for a few blocks in this ward?” www.chicagocrusader.com

Three more pit bull attacks in Chicago By J. Coyden Palmer Since a Chicago Crusader series last month on pit bulls in Chicago, there have been three more attacks in the city. The most recent occurred on October 6 when a 56-year-old woman and an 8year-old child were attacked in the Gage Park neighborhood. On September 25, a UPS driver was seriously injured by a pit bull on the city’s West Side. He was rescued by a postal carrier, who was in the area when the attack occurred. On Sept. 19 an 8-year-old boy in the Chatham neighborhood was attacked by a pit bull that escaped from its home in the 100 block of East 90th street. A samaritan was also bitten when he came to the aid of the boy. In all, of the incidents the victims were hospitalized after the attacks. In the Gage Park incident, Chicago Police responded to a 911 call around 4 p.m. When officers arrived, they found the two victims suffering from severe bite wounds to their legs. At Crusader press time, both victims were listed in serious condition at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to a hospital spokesperson. Chicago police are investigating the incident but no charges or citations

have been filed. Neighbors who witnessed the incident, say the attack may have lasted up to 10 minutes. They say only one of the three pit bulls that live at the residence was involved in the attack. They also said the dogs had never been a problem in the neighborhood. The dog belonged to the family it attacked. In the Chatham attack, former Olympic and professional boxer Danell Nicholson, an alumni of Dunbar Vocational High School, said fighting off the 70 pound dog was the toughest fight of his life. He described seeing the dog run into a crowd of children and focusing on the boy before biting the child’s leg. That is when he grabbed a golf club and began beating the dog. But the golf club broke and he had to use only his hands and body to fight the dog. “He was strong as hell,” said Nicholson in describing the dog. “At one point I was on the ground choking the dog. He had my hand in his mouth. It was a blow by blow battle.” The child, Demarcus Feltus, said he feared for his life. His grandmother is grateful Nicholson stepped in. The dog’s owner was cited for failure to restrain the dog and not having a dog license.

20 years later Blacks mark anniversary (Continued from page 1) message to Washington again this weekend with “Justice or Else,” and he will join thousands of Blacks who have spoken out against police officers who have killed many young Blacks without facing prosecution. All week, Blacks on buses from across the country have been pouring into Washington. They include older Blacks who come to absorb the nostalgia of the first march and a younger generation whose “Black Lives Matter” movement continues to spark activism among youth in cities across the nation. Both generations may make this march even bigger and more successful than the first one. On Saturday,

remain near the bottom of the socioeconomic scale in the richest country on earth. Due to their lack of success, many Blacks have grown weary. But in recent years, their frustrations have turned to anger as more Blacks than ever before have been arrested and killed by law enforcement officers around the nation. This year, nearly 30 Blacks have been killed by police. Most of these victims have been young Black males whose deaths have enraged and spurred a younger generation to adopt their own brand of Black activism with the “Black Lives Matter” movement, a national campaign that many view as the modern version of the Civil Rights Movement. With youth dying at the hands of police officers, charter schools threatening public school systems around the nation and dimmer career opportunities, many of the nation’s Black youth have grown disillusioned about their futures. This weekend, many of them are expected to converge on the nation’s capital to fight for opportunities that continue to grow bleak from the failure of Blacks to make equal gains in America’s boardrooms and political offices. With racial tensions once again ripping through America, the youth-oriented “Black Lives Matter” is expectDREAM DEFENDERS, an organization filled with young activists from Florida, is one of many groups ed to inject new energy and help that will be at the 20th Anniversary of the Million March in Washington on Saturday, October 10. usher in a new era as senior leaders

many will witness the rising influence of Farrakhan among middle-class Blacks and youth as he gains more followers who have lost faith in traditional Civil Rights leaders and their failure to stop social injustice and inequality among people of color. Hispanics and other disenfranchised groups are encouraged to join the event. But an expected Black majority will once again challenge America to fulfill its promise to provide equal opportunities that many consider long overdue. At Mosque Maryam, 7351 South Stony Island, Blacks boarded two airconditioned buses to make the 10hour trip. One bus departed the site on Thursday and the other on Friday.

To save money, many Blacks plan to stay with friends and relatives in Washington. Once again, the event will be a time for bonding among Black males, many of whom are still scarred from years of unemployment and despair caused by the Great Recession. When the nation’s first Black president, Barack Obama, was elected in 2008, many Blacks believed that times would get better. Since then, more Blacks have earned college degrees and have become millionaires. However, success still has not come to a majority of the nation’s 42 million Blacks. Despite many marches and demonstrations that have produced much bloodshed, Blacks still

from the Civil Rights Movement continue to age and die. Most of the speakers at the Million Man March in 1995 are gone, including Civil Rights icons Rosa Parks, Dorothy Height, poet Maya Angelou, Dr. Betty Shabazz, and former Washington Mayor Marion Barry. For the past several years, Farrakhan, 82, has gained younger followers with his fiery rhetoric and rebukes of America’s vices, as well as gaining more support from Civil Rights leaders and the Black Press. To address the disparities, many young Blacks are rejecting King’s message of peace and non-violence and adopting stronger philosophies. At the annual Marcus Garvey birthday celebration in Bronzeville in August, Brother Kalelrah Calwell, a community youth leader, said, “Young people are disenchanted with America. They don’t see the benefits of all the marches and the Civil Rights Movement. They want to see results. Honestly, a lot of young people are listening to Louis Farrakhan.” Another participant in the Marcus Garvey celebration, Asantewuaa Uppon, agreed. “Our young people are being killed and jailed for no reason. Seeking peace has been tried. We have to stop the killing of our children,” she said.

EDITORIAL COLUMBUS DAY OR INDIGENOUS PEOPLES’ DAY? On October 12, 2015, Columbus Day will be celebrated in America. Almost everyone has heard the little jingle often used as a mnemonic device by American history students - “In 14-hundredninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.” No doubt, because of this, many students never forgot the year that Christopher Columbus sailed his vessels to what has been called the new world. Columbus has been credited with “discovering” a whole continent! Never mind that there were indigenous people already living here. Columbus has been lauded for his discovery although he made a big mistake in where he had landed. He thought he had found India, which is why he named the people who were here “Indians.” Of course, they already had their own names, which were disregarded by the European interlopers. Columbus Day represents the epitome of imperialist chutzpa. It is the equivalent of thinking that the Sun revolves around the Earth, an opinion that was held several centuries ago, which is similar to the thinking that the Earth’s continents revolve around Europe. No, the Sun does NOT revolve around the Earth, and Europe is not the central land mass on this planet. The people who lived here when Columbus stumbled upon them did not give one hoot about Europe, if they even knew that it existed. In other words, the only reason that in this day and age we celebrate someone who discovered a whole continent of people who were already here is because we are still in the Dark Ages of European imperialism. We are still thinking as though nothing exists until it is seen and sanctioned by Europe. Americans, the scion of Europe, have followed suit. How else can you explain the fact that we still actually celebrate Columbus Day? Lately, a lot of people are beginning to wake up to the fact that this archaic practice is inappropriate at best and downright ridiculous, at its worst, especially when you consider what happened afterwards. The indigenous people, now called Native Americans, were robbed of their land, tricked, given diseases and were forced to live on reservations. In other words, European interlopers ran roughshod over the native people and then later reached across the ocean to snatch Africans from their continent for the purpose of using them as free labor in this stolen land. So when we celebrate Columbus Day, we are celebrating the pillage of indigenous people by European immigrants! The city of Seattle, however, has opted to move in a direction that makes much more sense than the celebration of the adventures of a misguided imperialist. They have replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day. One Seattle City Council member said “Celebrating Columbus is celebrating Mass Murder.” Seattle is not alone; earlier this year Minneapolis, MN has also designated Columbus Day as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, and South Dakota now celebrates Native Americans Day. These are signs that some Americans are evolving. Americans, especially white Americans, have a dubious legacy. True, today the country is considered to be the most powerful nation in the (Western) world, but this wealth and power has been built on the backs of others. Interestingly, many white Americans don’t get it; they don’t understand that America has a history of maltreatment of others. It is as though too many white Americans suffer from a “cultural myopia;” they can’t see the broader picture, i.e., how imperialistic attitudes are helping to destabilize the entire planet. But that’s another story for another time. As we approach the Columbus Day holiday, or the Indigenous Peoples’ holiday, or whatever you want to call it, take some time to think about the fact of our global connectedness. It’s about time that we give long-suffering Native Americans their due. When Columbus arrived, the land was pristine; unpolluted. As we celebrate the upcoming holiday, let’s remember this, and hopefully think about how we can create a better future for all of us in this “land of debris and home of the slave.” A luta continua.

I am both fascinated and disappointed about this effort called crowdfunding. In case some of your readers don’t know about the concept, it is when an individual or organization sets up an online fundraising drive to raise money for just about anything. The beauty of it is, is that people from all over the world are potential contributors. In exchange for your contribution, the one seeking the funds offer some sort of perk. Some crowdfunding drives are ridiculous like people asking for money to go on a high-end first date with someone they just met, or another person asking the “crowd” to fund a luxury vacation. These sorts of ideas might seem farfetched, but guess what? They get funded. Most crowdfunding requests are of a more serious nature, and Chicago and the rest of the world is being asked to get behind a $300,000 drive to finance a monument to Ida B. Wells, journalist and civil rights pioneer. To me, this is the perfect way to get the needed dollars. There are more than 1 million Black people in Chicago so we could really prime the pump if half of us just gave $2. Think about how many former Chicagoans there are, who are likely

contributors. Finally, when we take into account all of those who appreciate the work Mrs. Wells did in the 1920s and earlier, the crowdfunding drive should easily reach, if not exceed its goal. The Ida B. Wells Commemorative Art Committee is trying to raise all of the money during October through the indiegogo.com site. Right now it only has about $3,000. People not having heard about the crowdfunding campaign is the only reason this sum should be so low. It is very, very important that we tell everyone we know that they can and should contribute. The monument, which will be at 37th & Langley, near where Mrs. Wells used to live, will be done by Chicago’s most famous sculptor, Richard Hunt. How embarrassing would it be for Black people here and across the country if we can’t raise $300,000 in honor of a woman who gave so much to so many. Alvin Parker

COMMENTARY

Environmental Extremists seem to be going cuckoo Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford Finally, African Americans are starting to understand our environmental policies. They are seeing the Obama Administration’s policies as damaging and in some cases lethal to the Black economy. The Administration came into the focus in 2009 with their money choking “Cap and Trade” initiative. Fortunately, pro-business groups rallied and killed their attempt to permanently damage our economy by “dumbing” down our economic prowess and fall behind European and Asia nations. Surrender being Number 1? NEVER!! We were quite successful in our pushback. As Senator James Inhofe stated, “The oxygen left the room for Cap and Trade when the National Black Chamber of Commerce testified before the Senate and explained the dangers of the proposed legislation.” The Obama Administration and its cohorts like Senator Barbara Boxer met their “Gettysburg” that day on July 16, 2009. We really stung them on that issue. It appears we are stinging them on the three latest initiatives from the Environmental Protec-

Harry C. Alford tive Agency. The EPA feels the pressure to find some success as their Administration goes into its twilight stage and America, with a new administration, replaces them and cleans up their mess. Like Kamikaze pilots in World War II, they are coming at the American economy regardless of the consequences. They have launched the Proposed Ozone Rule (which kills crude oil), the Clean Power Plan (which kills coal) and the Methane Rule (which kills natural

gas). They are going to deliver a very serious blow to our local economies. In fact, we have shown that minorities, Blacks and Hispanics, will take devastating damages amounting to over 11 million jobs in urban communities. EPA’s response to this data: Yes minority communities will take the brunt of the economic effects but we can help them with public assistance. Gina McCarthy, EPA Administrator, finally admitted to the potential damages and all she wants to do is put more of us on welfare. It is hard for her to imagine that Black folks don’t want public assistance, we want lifetime jobs and an honest way to make a living. There seems possible racial animus in this logic, in effect: we don’t want hard work; just a handout. Racial animus is their motive operandi (M.O.). They want to poison our minds with paranoia and lies about our great industrial sectors. Energy is the lifeblood of our economy and future and they want us to be ignorant to this fact so that they can finish their evil agenda. My brothers and sisters don’t let them make you think that environmental extremism is

good for our families and economy. It will wreck us to perilous extremes. They want you to think that asthma is caused by Ozone and less than pristine air. That is a lie!! Our air has been decreasing in Ozone year after year but Asthma is on the rise. The fact is no one knows the cause of Asthma and they certainly haven’t found a cure. Their reasoning is a total lie. There is no correlation between Asthma and Ozone according to EPA’s own research. But yet, they (the President and Administrative officials) tell this lie to us over and over again. Don’t let them destroy some of the top paying job opportunities offered to our communities in exchange for their “hocus pocus.” They want control over your minds and families. Don’t let them do it. Yes, it is getting very exciting. Just this week, the super liberals put out misinformation about the National Black Chamber of Commerce via the Washington Post newspaper. Lies, innuendos and false claims. The reporting was less than professional and we attempted to explain the misrepresentations to their Ombudsman. To our surprise, the Post doesn’t have an Ombudsman to whom

readers can go to correct inaccuracies. They even claim one of the “gotcha” men stalking me with a camera is a “writer.” Just a few years ago he was in security at the Detroit Westin Hotel. Give me a break! The others they quoted also have hidden agendas. The misinformation articles, the lies and stalking us around the country are flattering. But we didn’t become the number one Black business association in the world by being timid. There are a lot of “broke face” governors, senators, congresspersons and corporate CEO’s who have learned this the hard way. We got a big laugh from the incomplete reporting, replete with racial innuendos. As my late mentor, Arthur A. Fletcher, once told me, “When you get on the front page of the Post you are in Tall Cotton and that ain’t bad. The fact is they are fearing your movement and your side is apparently winning.” The truth always wins eventually. A New Breed of Bigoted Politicians By Oscar H. Blayton NNPA Guest Columnist Among the many windswept cliffs that stand guard on the shores of the island of Okinawa, one is known for its particularly gruesome history. “Suicide Cliff ” is located on the southern portion of Okinawa. It is so named because thousands of Okinawans took their own lives at the site as American forces advanced across the island in 1945 during the last months of World War II. Twenty five years later, flying low over cliffside memorials honoring the dead of various towns and villages who perished there, I was struck by the fact that so many people felt compelled to rush to their own destruction. I soon learned that for tactical reasons, and to further their own doomed war effort, the Japanese army had terrified Okinawan civilians with tales of extreme cruelties they should expect at the hands of the approaching Americans. The island’s people had their minds manipulated to the point that many chose to kill themselves rather than fall into the hands of a ruthless enemy. Eventually, the people of Okiwww.chicagocrusader.coM

Oscar H. Blayton nawa came to realize that these were “useless deaths” as the Americans turned out not to be the monsters portrayed by the Japanese army. In the years since viewing this tragic site, I learned it is not unusual for people to be manipulated into a mass hysteria that makes them act against their own self-interest, or even to rush toward their own self-destruction. In this cycle of the U.S. presidential election, we have extraordinarily clear examples of the type of propaganda and demagoguery that leads to this type of madness. Donald Trump is the poster child for destructive demagoguery. This bloviating bigot has pulled the Republican Party

down to new lows and, in the process, dumbed down the national political discourse to a point where America is gnawing at its own flesh in an attempt to expel nonexistent horrors. Echoing the likes of former Gov. George C. Wallace of Alabama and the two Virginia senators, Harry F. Byrd Sr. and Harry F. Byrd Jr., Trump feeds his followers platters of noxious vitriol that are devoid of facts. In addition to demonizing Latinos and “Black Lives Matter” activists, Trump, a privileged White man who inherited his wealth from his father, once declared that the Pequot Indians “don’t look like Indians to me.” This is a person who feels so entitled that he can determine what America is and who Americans are. Like the thousands who followed a manipulative Japanese army to their hurried end on Okinawa, individuals who flock to Trump’s banner of bigotry and foolishness – eventually will see the senselessness of championing someone who makes extremely ill-considered pronouncements and whose campaign completely lacks sound policy ideas. Fortunately for them, however, Trump will not be president of

Blacks Must control their owcoMMunity

the United States. Unfortunately, however, other Republican presidential hopefuls are mimicking his audacious and bigoted posturing because his followers are giving so much credence to this cartoon of an ugly American. Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, and Mike Huckabee may not be stoking the fires of the exact same bigoted causes, but they are ramping up their rhetoric to approximate Trump’s level of demagoguery. Just as George Wallace and both Senators Byrd relied on a strategy of saying the “N-word” louder than anyone else, this new breed of bigoted politicians base their strategies on attacking liberal targets of opportunity with more vigor than anyone else. And while there are varying degrees of bigotry among the Republican field of presidential candidates, they all seem to be willing to have the country self- destruct rather than give in to its liberalization. During the past seven years, most of them have urged their followers to reject the Affordable Care Act, with little regard for the fact that many of them cannot pay for basic medical needs. These Republican candidates have called upon their followers to oppose an increase in the minimum wage, despite the fact that many of those supporters are

low-wage earners. They ask conservatives to join them in opposing the multilateral nuclear deal with Iran, even though the sons and daughters of those conservatives might bleed on the battlefields of any ensuing war. And, of course, they oppose extending equal rights to the LBGT community, while many of their backers have family members and loved ones who are in the LBGT community. They are urging their followers to go over the cliff and pull the rest of America over behind them. For those of us who refuse to swallow the venom of the likes of Trump, Cruz, Huckabee and Paul, we have a pressing obligation. We must do all that is necessary to prevent the forces of self-destruction from taking hold. We must not allow a group of hysterical bigots to determine the future of America. We must stand against those who are taken by a type of self-destructive madness and would throw America over a political cliff to drown in a sea of hatred and despair. Oscar H. Blayton is a former Marine Corps. combat pilot and human rights activists who practices law in Virginia.

COMMENTARY

KEN BRIDGES AND MATAH Dr. Conrad Worrill, Director/Professor, Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS), located at 700 East Oakwood Blvd, Chicago, Illinois, 60653, 773268-7500, Fax: 773-268-3835. E-mail: c-worrill@neiu.edu, Website: www.neiu.edu/ccics, Twitter: @CCICS_Chicago.

Dr. Conrad Worrill

On Friday, October 11, 2002, the leaders of the National Black United Front, from around the country, began arriving in Kansas City, Missouri for our Fall Central Committee Meeting. The meeting was scheduled to begin Friday evening with a welcome reception and an all day meeting for Saturday, October 12th. As the Chicago contingency pulled into the parking lot of the W. E. B. DuBois Learning Center, I immediately observed that many of the leaders of NBUF had arrived and were outside the Center greeting and interacting with each other. It was a beautiful day in Kansas City and it was good to see that so many of the NBUF leadership had arrived early in preparation for this important meeting. About an hour after our arrival at the W.E.B. DuBois Learning Center, I received a call on my cell phone from an activist in Chicago, and a MATAH organizer informing me that our Brother Kenneth Bridges had been killed by a sniper (Beltway Sniper) at a gas station somewhere in Virginia while refueling his vehicle. Needless to say, I found this hard to believe and accept. Immediately, I

began to call other MATAH organizers, specifically Gaston Armour, the MATAH Regional Organizer for the Chicago and Midwest area. Brother Gaston confirmed that our friend and fellow worker in the Black Liberation Movement had become a victim of this serial sniper. Immediately, I asked everyone to assemble and I made the announcement. Obviously, everyone was shocked. I asked that we pour libations for Brother Ken and use his spirit to begin our meeting early. We dedicated our NBUF Central Committee Meeting to Ken Brid- ges, the Co-Founder of MATAH. I had begun to work very closely with Brother Ken as we prepared for the August 17, 2002 Millions For Reparations Mass Rally in Washington, D.C. Brother Ken was very helpful in making this rally a “grand success.” I must admit, for a very long time I avoided meeting with any of the representatives of MATAH who called NBUF offices seeking to explain the MATAH program. Personally, I had become somewhat turned off, over the years, by people presenting a variety of economic

schemes allegedly aimed at helping solve the economic problems of African people in America. I had become burned out from listening to these proposals. So, I put up a barrier over the last two years and avoided meeting with any MATAH representatives. But apparently, the Creative Forces of the Universe did not want this to continue. Without all of the lengthy background, Gaston Armour joined the NBUF Chicago Chapter and in our meeting, the evening he joined, I discovered I knew his family, specifically his aunt, who I’d worked with over the years. It dawned on me that Gaston was a member of the Armour family in Chicago who owned a very popular Black owned grocery store. The Armour family has established a tradition in Chicago of being a family of business people. From that moment on, Brother Gaston began to lobby me to become a part of MATAH. One of our members, Sister Iris Dunmore, had been attending some of the local MATAH meetings on our behalf and suggested that we should give the MATAH concept a chance.

Finally, I broke down and agreed to meet with Brother Ken at my home earlier that year. The meeting was only to be for an hour, just to touch base. However, Ken and I hit it off so well, we met in my living room for over four hours. It was truly a meeting of the spirit of our ancestors and from that day forward, Ken and I began talking every week on a regular basis. It was out of that meeting that we made the linkage between the demand for external reparations and its relationship to what we must do to repair ourselves, which we began to call “internal reparations.” It became clear to me that Ken Bridges was a deep thinker, a brilliant organizer who had committed his life to the liberation of Black people by making his vision of MATAH become a reality. MATAH, as Ken explained it to me, was a concept given to him by God. Ken constantly made the point that “MATAH was an economic movement of self determination for Africans in America and around the world.” Ken always reminded his audiences when speaking that “MATAH emphasizes (Continued on page 14)

Ben Carson: The Brother from Another Planet By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist When neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson started flirting for a Presidential run, I thought he had lost his mind. Now that he has jumped into the fray, opening his mouth one too many times, I know he has. The problem? Too many people disagree with me. He raised $20 million in the last quarter, more than any of his competitors (of course, Donald Trump is self-financing his campaign). For an outsider, he has done extremely well, raising $31 million in just a few months. Why are people supporting him? Many are signaling their disgust with Washington politics by supporting the nerdy neurosurgeon Carson, and caustic former CEO Carly Fiorina. In a recent CNN poll Trump, Carson, and Fiorina beat more established candidates Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush, and Senator Ted Cruz. Those who bring up the rear of the field include Ohio Governor John Kasich, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, Senator Rand Paul, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, and New Jersey Governor Chris Cristie. During the first Republican debate, I thought I was watching a ten-person episode in a stand-up comedy reality show. 6

The more substantive conversation at the “kiddie table” for those who polled lower than “front runners,” catapulted Carly Fiorina into the September 16 debate, where she handled the bombastic Donald Trump more forcefully than others. Since that debate Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and former Texas Governor Rick Perry have dropped out of the race. There are others who need to drop out. Given his position in the polls and his now-expanding pocketbook, Ben Carson is not likely to go anywhere. Will we be stuck with the brother from another planet as nominee, and possibly President of the United States? Carson admits that he does not know what he is taking on. When asked how, as President, he would handle the hurricane that threatened the East coast on September 30, he responded, “I don’t know.” Many of his other responses to questions mirror those of Donald Trump’s, which boil down to “we’ll figure it out.” The voters are expecting Carson or Trump to “straighten out” the government, trust because of their reputations, even though they have no experience in running a country. How can we trust people who would build walls between the US and Mexico, or who could not accept

SATURDAY, October 10, 2015

Dr. Julianne Malveaux Muslims in government? How can we trust a prevaricator like Carly Fiorina who uses nonexistent videos as a talking point in her campaign? The brother from another planet may be doing so well in the polls because he is pandering to predominately conservative white audiences with his extreme views. His clear contempt for African Americans who are not in his corner is troubling. He says that the media has “manipulated” African Americans. His comments seem to suggest that African Americans do not have minds of our own, and that we are open to manipulation. Why

didn’t he say that his white conservative allies are being manipulated by his homophobic, jingoistic comments? Carson has said many of the things conservatives want to hear. He has described marriage as a union between a man and a woman, even as the LGBT community has waged a successful struggle for marriage equality. He has associated the gay community with “beastiality” and referenced marriage equality advocates with extreme groups like NAMBLA (North American Man/ Boy Love Association), which few support. He says homosexuality is “a choice” because people go to jail straight and come out gay. Some support him because he is unapologetically “politically incorrect.” But he crosses the line between being politically incorrect and being offensive, inhumane, and bigoted. He would not trust a Muslim to be commander-in-chief. Half a century or so ago, there were fears that Catholic President John F. Kennedy might be unfit for office because of his religion. The quote that catapulted Carson onto the public stage was one he made at the National Prayer Breakfast. He described the Affordable Care Act (often known as Obamacare) as worse

Blacks Must control their own coMMunity

than slavery. President Obama was in the audience and Republicans applauded Carson for his audacity in confronting our President to his face. Since Carson had never been a slave (except, clearly, mentally), his comments were absurd. His comments suggested that he would use race, but in a pejorative way (consider the manipulated Black folks), but they were embraced. If Ben Carson were anybody other than a reportedly smart African American neurosurgeon, would he be holding his own in the polls? If he had not described the Black Lives Matters movement as “divisive,” would he have any traction? In the weeks since the September 16 debate, he has gained almost a million Facebook followers – 50,000 more than Donald Trump. Does that mean he could be President? I trust that the brother from another planet will fizz out, but given this Republican race, anything could happen. Are we ready for an anti-Muslim, antigay, evangelistic hardliner to preside over our country? Wake up, voters. Carson is an impending disaster. Julianne Malveaux is an author and economist. city $4.5 million, which was awarded to her family as part of a wrongful death settlement. While Servin is still on the force, Blacks may question McCarthy’s willingness to clean up his department and the reputation of his force. As the Black community waits for McCarthy to make a decision on Servin’s fate, pressure may also be on Emanuel to publicly address the issue as it drags on. So far, Emanuel, who historically has had a strained relationship with the Black community, has not publicly responded to IPRA’s recommendation to fire Servin. Now that the IPRA investigation has been completed, there are also questions about Servin’s current police powers. Servin was stripped of

those duties as the IPRA investigated his role in the shooting. Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez charged Servin with involuntary manslaughter, but Servin was acquitted after a judge determined that his act was not a reckless one, but an intentional one. According to the ruling, Servin should have been charged with first-degree murder. Cleared because of a legal technicality under double jeopardy, Servin can’t face murder charges. He remains free and still works with Chicago police. The decision outraged Boyd’s friends and relatives. Since her death, they have held demonstrations at Chicago Police headquarters in Bronzeville. Alvarez never admitted that she made a mistake in the botched case.

Financial Justice Costs Fifth Third Bank $21 Million CFPB and DOJ investigation finds violations of Equal Credit Protection Act By Charlene Crowell Discriminatory auto finance and illegal credit card practices were dealt multi-million dollar blows recently. A joint investigation by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) that began in January 2013, culminated on September 28 with settlements related to multiple alleged violations of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act. The joint actions will affect Black and Latino customers of Fifth Third Bank’s 1,300 branches in 12 states. The first and larger enforcement calls for $18 million to be paid to customers, who financed auto purchases through Fifth Third from January 2010 through September 2015. CFPB and DOJ charged that Black and Latino customers were victims of illegal and discriminatory pricing that increased interest rates without regard to their credit-worthiness. Fifth Third allowed car dealers to raise consumers’ interest rates as much as 2.5 percent above the bank’s actual rate, also known as a “buy

rate.” The bank also allowed car dealers to keep some or all of the difference as compensation. “We are committed to promoting fair and equal access to credit in the auto finance marketplace,” said CFPB Director Richard Cordray. “We are also obtaining millions of dollars in relief today for consumers affected by deceptive marketing of credit add-on products.” “Even when African-American and Latino borrowers negotiate the interest rate, they end up paying more for their cars than white borrowers with similar credit profiles because of the car dealer interest rate markup,” said Chris Kukla, Senior Vice President and expert on auto lending with the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL). “Discrimination has no place in the auto lending market,” continued Kukla, “and our research shows that dealer markups contribute to this discriminatory outcome. . . . The best way to root out discrimination in auto lending would be to eliminate dealer markups altogether.” Auto lending is the third largest source of consumer debt, after mortgages and student loans, according

Harry C.Crowell Alford Charlene to the New York Federal Reserve Bank. Additionally: • 80 percent of auto purchases are financed through car dealers; and • While Hispanic and AfricanAmerican consumers report negotiating interest rates more white borrowers, these consumers of color still paid higher interest rates than similar white borrowers. For the 11th time, CFPB levied

fines for illegal practices in the marketing or administration of add-on credit card products and services. Approximately 24,500 customers from 2007 through 2013 will share $3 million in relief. Lured by the promise of the option to cancel credit card payments in the event of a financial hardship such as job loss, disability or hospitalization, customers were never given accurate information on the products or costs. “Fulfillment kits” were sent to cardholders accepting the telemarketing pitch or online solicitations. However the information provided contained incorrect descriptions of the product’s costs, benefits, exclusions, terms and conditions. In addition to the $3 million credit card restitution and the $18 million for wrongful auto financing, Fifth Third will also pay two, $500,000 fines for violations in each lending area. The bank will also: • Pay to hire a settlement administrator to distribute funds to victims. Once the administrator has been hired, CFPB will provide him/her with contact information for affected borrowers. The administrator will then directly contact affected bor-

rowers. • Substantially reduce or eliminate entirely dealer markups – The discretionary interest rate markups will be limited to 1.25 percent above the buy rate for vehicle loans of 5 years or less. Loans with longer terms will now be limited to 1.0 percent markup. Fifth Third Bank, the ninth largest depository indirect auto lender in the nation, now joins Ally Bank, American Honda Financial and Evergreen Bank as violators of the Equal Credit Protection Act. Together, the sum of fines and restitution in this one lending area now totals $194 million. “Consumers deserve a level playing field when they enter the marketplace, especially when financing an automobile,” said U.S. Attorney Carter M. Stewart of the Southern District of Ohio. “This settlement prevents discrimination in setting the price for auto loans.” Charlene Crowell is a communications manager with the Center for Responsible Lending. Back To School jam connects youth to learning programs On Saturday, September 19, at the Back to School Jam nearly 40 of Chicago City of Learning’s partner organizations united at Jones College Prep to offer a taste of the on-site and online programs that they offer young people year-round. More than 1,200 youth and family members took advantage of this free opportunity to discover something new, deepen existing interests and embark upon pathways toward college and careers. “The goal of Chicago City of Learning is to connect youth to the rich learning opportunities that our great city has to offer, so that they can discover and pursue what they love to do,” said Sybil Madison-Boydof Digital Youth Network, which runs CCOL. “The Back to School Jam provided hundreds of families with an introduction to CCOL, but we want them to remember that our website is a resource they can utilize anytime. Youth, and

the adults who care about them, can find and get started on whatever they enjoy 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year.” At ChicagoCityofLearning.org youth 4-24 (and the caring adults in their lives) can search for hundreds of online activities, as well as free and affordable in-person programs that meet every interest. Representative of what’s happening citywide, the Back to School Jam included everything from robotics and coding to photography and social advocacy, from history and nature conservancy to architecture and design. The multi-part event featured a Maker Party featuring hands-on activities, a Gallery showcasing student work, and a Performance Series celebrating the successes of aspiring singers, writers, dancers, musicians and fashion designers. Any young Chicagoan can be a part of this fun learning experience by setting up a free CCOL account and

Taking home a brand new iPad Mini, which he plans to use for school, Lake View’s Alex Hernandez, 15, had a hard time choosing his favorite part of the day. “I love STEM, so all the technology was awesome. But so was the Teen Lounge…. Everything… I liked doing everything!” New this year, Teen Lounges fostered peer support and offered mentorship to 13 to 19 year olds. One participant of the Open Mic Mixer lounge was chosen to present an original poem on stage. With passion and

We are enjoying finding ways to expand upon that here.”

The program’s theme is “Building Sustainable Communities.” I like this theme because it helps to encourage this generation of African American college students to consider the importance of community development as a professional career focus. The top three teams selected will be flown to the Ford World Headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan to present their projects before a panel of automotive and media professionals. We need to look for ways to engage and challenge our young talented minds with an opportunity to make a difference in our communities. The truth is there should be more corporations that follow the Ford Motor Company emphasis on higher education and community development. Every HBCU institution should urge its students to participate in this exciting program. It is an opportunity for the students, universities and com-

munities to all win. Timing is important to get the necessary information to apply for this opportunity. Go to the following links to get information about the Ford HBCU Community Challenge: www.blackamericaweb.com/ hbcuchallenge and www.rickeysmileymorningshow.com/hbcucha llenge. Let’s raise up a new generation of innovators, developers, engineers and leaders who are committed to the sustainable development of our communities.

Op-Ed Ford Motor Company Encourages HBCU Student Achievement By Dr. Ben Chavis Each generation of African Americans has been challenged with both old and new hurdles to clear in the life-long marathon to achieve success and to fulfill career goals and objectives. The importance of attaining a quality education cannot be overstated in particular for the African American community. I serve on the Board of Directors of the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO) that represents the interests of 126 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). NAFEO is the only national membership association of its kind, representing the presidents and chancellors of the diverse black colleges and universities: public, private and land-grant, twoyear, four-year, graduate and professional, historically and predominantly black colleges and universities. Working with NAFEO has helped me to grasp and to understand the 10

complex matrix of issues involving our nation’s HBCUs. Completing a college education in America can determine one’s quality of life quantitatively in terms of potential annual income as well as helping to become socially self-sustainable. As we all know, however, a college education is now more expensive than ever before; and, entry to good schools is highly competitive. Recently, I was pleased to learn about a program that was specifically created to reach and to provide students scholarships at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Ford Motor Company and Ford Motor Company Fund are reaching out to students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities for their third edition of the Ford HBCU Community Challenge Competition. Up to $75,000 in scholarships, and university and community grants will be awarded for the first-place student team and its project. The Ford

Crowdfunding Campaign For Ida B. Wells Monument Runs Through October Will be the First in Chicago to Honor an African American Woman The Ida B. Wells Commemorative Art Committee launched an online fundraising campaign in October for a monument to honor the life and work of Ida B. Wells (18621931). The goal is to raise $100,000 (of the total $300,000 needed) to begin the creation of a monumental interpretative sculpture by renowned sculptor Richard Hunt. Those wishing to support the campaign can visit http://igg.me/at/idabwellsmonument where donations from $10 to $5,000 will help fund this historic monument of national importance. The sculpture will be located on the winding path in the grassy median at 37th and Langley, a short walk from the house at 3624 S. King Drive where Wells once lived. It will include images, biographical information and excerpts of Wells’ writings.

Harry Ida B.C.Wells Alford “Because Ida B. Wells often worked at the grassroots level, it is only

fitting that a grassroots campaign for the monument to honor her is taking place,” said Dan and Michelle Duster, great-grandchildren of Ida B. Wells and members of the Ida B. Wells Commemorative Art Committee. Ida B. Wells was a journalist, teacher, anti-lynching crusader, women’s rights activist and civil rights pioneer who worked and raised a family in the Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago from 1895 to 1931. A decade later the Chicago Housing Authority named a public housing development after Wells as a result of strong community pressure. That development is now gone, and the monument will stand at the center of Oakwood Shores, the mixed-income housing development that replaced it. Once completed, the Committee

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING

A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking By Effie Rolfe It’s a beautiful morning. Each morning when I awake and my feet hit the floor—immediately, my lips release an immediate expression of sincere praise to the Father. This day is full of brand new mercies, new opportunities to bless as well as to be a blessing to someone. Furthermore, the day is beautiful simply because it is filled with God’s grace. The condition of the weather is merely a byproduct. Albeit, at times Mother Nature can be brutal rendering undesired wild fires, tornadoes, hurricanes, as well as the sun beating on your back causing draughts. Personally, I would love a picture perfect day of 75 degrees, sunny weather with 25 mph winds but in this life, it’s not always blue skies and green grass. Therefore, we must look at what’s really important and that being another opportu-

Effie Rolfe nity to make an impact in someone’s life. All in all—I choose six feet of snow under my feet rather than six feet of snow over me. We have so much to be grateful.

However, we can use our energy to complain or speak God’s favorite language of praise. Recently, I was viewing a broadcast on periscope, which is a new app that allows live streaming. A young lady in Johannesburg, Africa was talking about first world problems versus third world problems. Translation— according to her broadcast many Africans feel that we don’t have third world problems such as abject poverty, inadequate electricity, education or hospitals. Perhaps the Internet or a lack of electricity may be the extent of your problems. Others may involve a food desert, while those hard hit may suffer from scarcity of available food available because of the Sahara Desert. In other words, the consensus is most of our problems can be solved with money. Too many others don’t have a choice because their problems are more widespread and

deep -eated. The bottom line, if your problem can be solved with money it’s really not a problem, but maybe more of an inconvenience? We have become so spoiled until we find instant gratitude. “I want it right now” is the modern day mantra. On the real, this society is beyond micro-wave—2 minutes is too slow. The drive thru is not fast enough, the self service check out has too many problems and the fastest smart phone has swiftly become archaic for this impatient self centered culture. What you may be experiencing is a chance to slow down and think of the mega ills and woes that other countries have on a permanent basis. Sources indicate that nearly a third of the world’s population live on less than one dollar a day? That is the equivalence to a family of four not having enough funds to share a cheeseburger on the McDonald’s

value menu. God’s world is bigger than your community, job, family, church and country. There are too many folk with real problems. Take a minute to imagine the 7.3 billion individuals consisting of various colors, creeds and socioeconomic levels worldwide. Better still—say a prayer for them. Lastly, continue to thank God for a blessed life. In the scope of things, you have so much to be grateful for. Each morning can be used to complain or an opportunity to view the day as a blessing and another chance to raise your praise. How is your day looking…? ©Effie Rolfe is an Author of “Supersize Your Thinking,” Media Personality and Motivational Speaker. You can contact her at effierolfe.com or on twitter.com/effiedrolfe. Chicago Theological Seminary’s 9th Annual C. Shelby Rooks Lecture “God grant me the courage to change the things I cannot accept.”— Rev. Dr. Alton B. Pollard III On October 1, over 200 people gathered to hear the words of Rev. Dr. Alton B. Pollard III at Chicago Theological Seminary’s 9th Annual C. Shelby Rooks Lecture. The C. Shelby Rooks Lecture was named in honor of CTS’s first African American president. Dr. Pollard’s lecture was “Life in the Valley of the Shadow of Death: A Parable for 21st Century Black America.” Dr. Pollard began his lecture with an overview of the death of Emmett Till and the more recent deaths of other African Americans including Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, and Sandra Bland. Dr. Pollard also mentioned the numerous deaths and acts of violence that occur in Chicago, including in August, where more than 40 people were shot on four consecutive weekends. “The violence, the pathology, rooted in white racial supremacy...has seized us,” Dr. Pollard said. In the second half of his lecture, Dr. Pollard shared a parable he

Rev. Dr. Alton B. Pollard III wrote called “The Endarkenment.” The parable was about a pastor and her congregation that was able to reflect on its past and grow from it. The pastor sought to “...understand the secret of her ancestors’ survival in this land. How were they able to affirm life, even in the valley of the shadow of death?” As the pastor embraced her heritage and taught the congregation to do so as well, a new consciousness enveloped the congregation. Nobody wants to be labeled a racist or intolerant, so instead of discussing race and religion openly and honestly in an integrated setting, we tend to talk about it behind closed doors or avoid it altogether.” However, Disgraced could be used as a great primer or “ice breaker” for those who need a

little push. “Disgraced goes for the jugular by letting people drop the façade. Politeness goes out the window and you find five characters sharing how they really feel about the topics you’re not supposed to discuss at a dinner party,” Young added. Critics have said that Disgraced is like a roller coaster ride through emotions, and I was shocked toward the end and frozen in my seat at the discourse that had just been shared among people who started off as friends. Young agrees that people will be surprised. “It’s an intense play. When I saw it on Broadway, I left the theater stunned, even though I knew what was going to happen. It was just so powerful.” Intense conversations around whether Amir has assimilated into American culture; who is better for the promotion—a Black woman or a man of Pak-

istani descent; or whether Amir’s work is more important than his aspiring artist wife’s work; as well as the regular marital infidelity fodder, this play will have your head spinning. Given this, it is great that the Goodman has talkback sessions after performances so audience members can sort through all they have just experienced. And while Young has rehearsed and honed her craft in many theatre performances, including in Stick Fly, The Little Mermaid, The Radio City Christmas Spectacular, Storyville, Chasing the Bird, Good People and Aida, among these and other television credits, she admits that she preps a bit for her role as Jory, a well-heeled, well educated and flawlessly dressed woman. “I read Diane Von Furstenberg’s biography, ‘The Woman I Wanted to Be,’ to prepare for playing this type of character.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR some true Black super starsErnie Banks, Billy Williams, and Fergie Jenkins and they didn’t get the hero worship team members are getting now from Black people. Maybe because it is all about winning, and no matter how good you are, if you aren’t winning people don’t really care about you. The White Sox are doing a lot to get Black youngsters in Chicago involved in baseball again. There was a time

(Continued from page 4) when it was the sport nearly every Black boy played and many of us dreamed of being a major league baseball player. But with the Sox playing like they don’t know how the game goes, they aren’t getting much attention from our kids. Maybe it is time for the Cubs and White Sox to look more at the fact that they are both Chicago teams and come together to get more Black youngsters

interested in the game. Of course, the majority of them will never play their way into the big leagues, but along the way they can learn the essentials of teamwork, performing under pressure, and joy of being involved in something bigger than self. Combining resources would be a win for the teams and for hundreds if not thousands of Black children Julius Mann

She is one of my favorite designers and I love everything she represents and celebrates – powerful, confident, intelligent, beautiful, and fearless women,” Young said. “There were many quotes in her book that seemed to speak to the essence of who Jory is. Also, costume designer Jennifer Von Mayrhauser did an incredible job with Jory’s look. Jory is a super confident person who knows what she’s working with and doesn’t apologize for it.” “Disgraced” runs through October 25, and is a good choice for all who can join the Goodman audience. “Everyone needs to see Disgraced, but I would encourage audience members at least be of high school age. It’s a heavy piece,” Young said. “As a Black actress, it is so incredible to tell an American story with brown actors, as well as white actors. We have a Pulitzer-prize winning play with two actors of color playing successful, wealthy, intelligent lawyers at the top of their game speaking intelligently and passionately about controversial topics. People of color need to be included in these types of roles.” For more information about “Disgraced” and ticket prices, call 312.443.3800, visit the box office at 170 N. LEGAL NOTICE (Cont’d from page 6) African cultural development and therefore the products and services that the organization represents would focus on the promotion of African culture.” Ken helped NBUF understand that by becoming a Network Business Center, we could help finance the work of NBUF. We had begun working on identifying onehundred NBUF members who would be willing to purchase $30.00 worth of MATAH products each month that would provide NBUF with a profit of $600.00 a month. A simple but powerful formula if executed. Ken and his friend, and business partner, Al Wellington, had created a vision for 14

products made by African people to be purchased and distributed by African people around the world. The key component of the MATAH concept, as Ken taught, is not only should we purchase products from each other that we produce, but we must also control the distribution of these products. In the name of Kenneth Bridges, we should carry the MATAH vision forward by remembering that “MATAH are those people of African descent who know that practicing a race-first philosophy is the key to obtaining true freedom for people of African descent, and who refuse to be crushed.” Let us always honor the spirit of our Brother, Ken Bridges.

Book Acknowledges Contributions Of Minnie Riperton Author’s memoir inspired by singer whose courage was recognized by Jimmy Carter This October’s Breast Cancer Awareness month offers an opportunity for book readers to honor a woman who responded to the disease’s challenges with love and openness and who first publicly brought it to the attention of African-American women. “Memoir of a Minnie Riperton Fan” ($12, CreateSpace/Amazon) is author Sheila Simmons’ journey through the life and times of Riperton, best known for her five-octave range and 1975 hit song “Lovin’ You.” Riperton died of breast cancer at the age of 31 — but not before being named a chairperson of the American Cancer Society’s Education Crusade and accepting a Courage Award from President Jimmy Carter at the White House

Minnie Riperton in 1977. “I can’t match the admiration that people have for you,” Carter told Riperton in the 1977 ceremony. He said she filled a need for the public to portray “another aspect of

human commitment, and that is the demonstration of courage and concern among those who are afflicted with cancer and who have a responsibility for those who suffer.” Simmons says she was drawn to Riperton as a basis for her memoir through childhood memories of “Lovin’ You.” “It was such an exquisite song and no popular singer has ever matched the purity and emotion of her voice. However, after a year of following Minnie’s life — through Chicago, Los Angeles, Acapulco, New York and Gainesville, Fla., and my encounters with Minnie’s famous friends and acquaintances (like Pam Grier and Stevie Wonder), I discovered Minnie’s legacy was actually the loving and open way in which she lived her life, even as death approached.” Simmons writes about how Rip-

Sheila Simmons erton disclosed her diagnosis live on “The Tonight Show,” by remarking to cancer survivor and Black comic Flip Wilson — Johnny Carson’s fill-in host for the night — “I’m in the club too, but from

another angle.” The singer informed an LA Weekly reporter that her mastectomy had not affected her sex life, saying, ‘It doesn’t change down below!’ ” While the Los Angeles Times proclaimed Riperton “a perfect example of how to live a happy life and be supremely confident after a cancer operation,” the AfricanAmerican-owned Ebony magazine made this declaration: breast cancer “wasn’t a white disease anymore.” NPR Book Reviewer Bobbi Booker, “Like Riperton’s five-octave range, Simmons’ prose sings, hitting high notes of perfection in a unique little book you’re going to love like an old soul record.” Simmons lives in Philadelphia and “Memoir of a Minnie Riperton Fan” is available on amazon. com.

Access receives CDC grant for its Sistas In The Know program With recent alarming statistics revealing that many African-American women on the South and West sides of Chicago are unaware of their HIV status, as well as statistics that show this segment is contracting the disease at higher rates than other women, Access Community Health Network continues its outreach around HIV awareness and prevention. ACCESS recently received a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to continue its quality services around HIV education and testing and reducing high-risk behaviors for vulnerable female populations. The grant will support ACCESS’ Sistas in the Know program, which is a social skills training intervention program that works with women in targeted areas to deliver strategic, culturally competent, community-based programming to diminish the stigma around HIV testing. One particular goal of the program is to find newly identified HIV-positive women who were previously unaware of their status and link them into HIV primary and specialty care services at an ACCESS health center. Also, the program will link high-risk, African-American women to medical care by referring them to evidencebased interventions to help them make informed decisions about their health. According to the Chicago Department of Public Health, the latest report citing 2013 data shows that more than 74 percent of new HIV diagnoses were among heterosexual AfricanAmerican women. ACCESS’ Sistas in the Know program follows in the tradition of previous programs such as SISTA, or Sisters Informing Sisters About Topics on AIDS, that work with women to identify and combat high-risk behaviors. These behaviors www.chicagocrusader.com

could include absence of condom use, intravenous drug use, homelessness and prostitution. ACCESS will reach out to women in Humboldt Park, Austin, West and East Garfield Park, North Lawndale, Douglas, Fuller Park, Grand Boulevard, Washington Park, Englewood and West Englewood to promote the program, and case management and adherence support will also be offered. Women who are identified as high-risk will be offered prevention and support services that have been proven to reduce HIV-related disparities. “ACCESS’ counseling, testing and referral program involves community outreach with HIV quick testing, and if a woman tests positive, she is given an appointment to connect her with an early intervention specialist,” said Monica Longmire, ACCESS Manager of Risk and Prevention Services. “Depending on whether a woman is high-risk, HIV-negative or HIV-positive, she can either participate in peerled group sessions or four group sessions that are initiated by ACCESS

case managers.” HIV negative women will be referred to ACCESS’ Voices/VOCES program, which engages evidencebased, high-impact prevention intervention. This intervention is a singlesession, group-level prevention program that includes a group discussion and education session to encourage condom use and improves condom negotiation skills. The goal is to reach women where they are most vulnerable and direct them to prevention and/or intervention services that are going to get them back on a productive track. “We use methods to encourage women to change their high-risk behaviors, improve coping skills, and empower them to take care of their own health as a way to prevent STD transmission and HIV re-infection,” Longmire added. ACCESS was one of only five organizations in the state of Illinois to receive this funding. For more information about the program, call Monica Longmire at 708-239-8063.

City and County Partner to expand Breast Health Services City Investment Will Provide Screening Mammograms for Up to 5,000 Women Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle announced recently a new partnership between the City of Chicago and Cook County Health & Hospitals System (CCHHS) to expand and improve breast health services available to low income women citywide, including providing accessible and effective mammography screenings for as many as 5,000 more uninsured women. In 2016, the City of Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH)

will invest a total of $635,000 to provide additional mammography services at three CCHHS locations. CDPH will also continue to provide $100,000 to Roseland Community Hospital and Mercy Hospital and Health Center as part of collaborations. “The best way to save lives is to ensure easy access to screenings and follow up services. This partnership will allow us to not only reach more women than ever before, but to ensure that they receive the quality breast health services to not only detect cancer, but to treat it,” said President Preckwinkle. The Cook County Health & Hos-

pitals System provides more than 13,000 mammograms annually and provides the full continuum of high quality breast cancer care from screenings to diagnostic and treatment services. Starting in January, City-funded services will transition to three County sites, in addition to continuing service at Mercy Hospital and Health Center’s four sites and Roseland Community Hospital. Through the City’s investments, up to 5,000 uninsured women will have access to free-of-charge screenings at these sites, more than doubling the 2,100 mammography services provided yearly by the City. “This new partnership between the

City and County creates capacity for uninsured women to be properly screened and treated,” said CDPH Commissioner, Dr. Julie Morita. “This is good news for the health of our residents.” As part of their work, the Metropolitan Chicago Breast Cancer Task Force has agreed to partner with CCHHS and CDPH to help ensure the expanded mammography services continue to provide high quality care for uninsured women in Chicago. According to a 2014 survey from CDPH, 8,625, uninsured women in Chicago, who are the recommended age for mammograms have not had a screening in the last two years.
